About this Episode

We dive into a discussion about Christopher Reeve's performance in Superman, share thoughts on the theater-going experience for 300: Rise of an Empire, and analyze the low-budget disaster of Titanic II. We also cover upcoming industry news, including a live-action Jungle Book adaptation, rumors surrounding a West Side Story remake, and the status of biblical epics like Noah.

Today on MYR Weekly, we'll be discussing Superman

1, the first Blade film, problems for Noah, and

another Titanic film. So stay tuned to MY Weekly.

Dan is not. Dan made some comments on the website

last week about Ace Ventura and Jim Carrey not

being funny, so I temporarily kicked him off

the podcast. No, in all seriousness, Dan has

some personal job situation going on, so he is

not going to be available for MY Weekly Records

for the distant future here, so we will see how

that goes. So, I am taking the helm this week.

And I have brought along a couple special guests

making their GeekCast Radio Network debuts. First

of all, I've referenced him multiple times when

I was talking about watching All the Planet of

the Apes, as well as a bunch of other stuff.

I've mentioned Crappy Movie Night multiple times.

So the first guest I want to bring on board here

is my roommate, Nate Crocker. Hello, sir. Hey,

how's it going? My name's Nate. I'm on a podcast.

Let's go. That's a great introduction, sir. I

don't know what you're talking about. Nothing,

that's good. They know your name and they know

what your voice sounds like, that's good enough.

And also along with us is another special guest,

and that is the, as far as I think my first introduction

to Crappy Movie Night was at his house, and that

is Nate's, one of Nate's best friends, Matt.

Hello, Matt. Hello. So we are all going to take

this trip. For those that have listened to the

podcast in the past, Do not expect the the normal

and wire weekly record this week or whenever

we do this because this is going to be a completely

different feel I believe and I think it's going

to be like if you took part geek cast radio network

record and you took part mystery science theater

3000 and then you Splash together like I don't

know like chicken pot pod for those people that

are familiar with that I think that might be

what you're going to about to get a mashup of

all of those things So I don't think you should

compare us to that. That's not delicious, whatever

that last thing was. It is. It's delicious, nostalgic

deliciousness in a pot pie. So anyway, so this

is going to go all kinds of different directions.

So just buckle up and get ready for this. Nate,

do you want to just do, as far as a little more

introduction, just as far as your movie watching

habits or what kind of geek? fandoms or geek

whatever trends that you've had over your life.

How do you find yourself in the geek realm? Well,

I don't know really. I mean I like comic books

and video games and silly movies and generally

when watching movies I just like something that

is fun and something that Either is completely

ridiculous. I'm not into very very Serious movies.

That's not really my thing, but I know other

people like it, but I don't know I can't really

get into it but yeah, I'm probably mostly a Video

game guy actually and that is an understatement

We need to take a picture of my basement and

put it on the episode post or something. He has

all things video games and his knowledge of video

game stuff surpasses just about anybody I've

ever known. So that is, like I said, an understatement.

Matt, what kind of geek stuff are you into mostly?

Well, I'm into anything. my D &D session early

to do this podcast. You know, comics, then the

multiple comic cons. Right now, my mouse pad

is sitting on top of three different movies of

varying qualities from the Italian job to break

into Electric Boogaloo. Yes. I watch any TV show

at least two to three times just to get a feel

for it. I'm wanting to do anything ever. I think

Electric Boogaloo was possibly one of the first

films I watched at one of the crappy movie nights.

Oh, you were there for Breaking 2? Yeah. I think

that was either the first or the second one.

That is such a good movie though, like really.

It actually is legitimately good. Yeah. It's

formulaic for the time, like it's a super 80s

formulaic movie, but it has so much style to

it. Feel like it's set up some of the formulas

to like like I feel like it's one of those things

that some of the things in it were originally

from it You know, we might have to like date

that and see which which came first, you know

Yeah, yeah, totally might have to do a whole

episode just on that film. Oh my god And for

those of you that don't know what I'm referencing

when I keep saying crappy movie night Mad or

Nate, why don't you explain what that was how

it came about? Yeah, so A long time ago, I played

this game called Blood Rain. I loved it. And

then it left rental places because I rented it

from a movie rental place. And then I became

an adult and I was like, you know, I want to

get that game again. I searched out. It was really

hard to find on eBay at the time. And then I

found out that if you bought the Blood Rain movie,

you get the second Blood Rain game for free.

Just all copies of the movie. And I remember

one of my friends saying, don't see the Blood

Rain movie. I know you love the game and it's

terrible. I bought the movie just to play the

game. It sat on my shelf for probably a year

and then I contacted my friend Nate. I was like,

you know what? I've got this really bad movie

that I know is bad. Everyone told me it's bad.

Do you want to sit down and watch it with me?

We did it. We met up at like 10 p .m. on a Sunday.

I bought a bunch of soda. We watched the movie.

It was amazing just how bad it was. And I was

like, why don't we just do this every week? And

then for about a year, Nate and I would just

try to find a movie that we knew would be legitimately

bad. There weren't any real rules. Eventually,

we started to focus more on action movies, because

then if it's bad, at least there's something

to watch. A bad drama just drags on. And that's

how Crap Big Movie Night started. And I remember,

as far as the few times that I was involved with

that, that it usually ended up also with a One

or two a .m. Trip to Taco Bell often yeah Back

then things were different. I don't know if I

had a job back then Oh, I worked late night on

Mondays. Yeah, we could stay up all night. We'd

go to Taco Bell come back watching commercials

for three hours Magic yeah, seriously, and it

wasn't always just a hundred percent movies sometimes

at least at the times I was there we'd watch

like an episode of Flight of the Conchords. There

would be some random cartoon that we'd watch.

Some weird cops from the 80s or whatever. I'd

never even heard of it. It was great. Crappy

cartoon night as well. Cops isn't crappy. I wouldn't

say that. I liked it. Anyway, so that's the crappy

movie night that we're referring to. You might

see some crappy movies that we'll talk about.

We're going to talk about one of them today actually.

I think it would qualify as a crap movie. But

anyways, how we usually start off each episode

is we take a quick look at the box office, see

how things did in the past weekend just to keep

everybody up to date. And like Dan and I, if

you were listening a few weeks ago, we made our

predictions for which 10 films would make the

most money in 2014. So it kind of gives us a

way to keep track of that. This past weekend,

we had a new number one. who took over from both

the Lego movie who had been number one for quite

a few weeks and then non -stop was number one

last week. This week, not really a huge surprise,

we had 300 Rise of an Empire take the top spot

beating out Mr. Peabody and Sherman by about

13 million or so. So 300 Rise of an Empire is

halfway to its $110 million budget. Good start

for that and then rounding up your top five was

non -stop at number three, the Lego movie at

number four, and Son of God has dropped to number

five. Really not too big of a surprise there.

We did see an Oscar boost for some of those best

picture nominations like 12 Years a Slave, Gravity,

Dallas Buyers Club. They all had a spike. Once

again, probably one of the last spikes they'll

have in the box office. And then the biggest

drops were Son of God, Pompeii, which Drop 63%.

It's only made 21 million against 100 million

budget. So you can chalk that up to the flop

category for 2014. RoboCop also is only about

halfway to its budget and it's about dead. So

a lot of flops so far in 2014. And the other

new film that hit theaters just in limited release

was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I will be

seeing eventually, but it was only in four theaters

this weekend. So it really wasn't a competitor.

I don't know how much you guys are into box office.

I'm guessing probably not as much as Dan and

I. It's more interesting just hearing you talk

about it than going and looking up. It's one

of those things where it's like I'm interested

that I'd love to hear it. I just have never spent

the time to go and do it. How do you feel about

RoboCop being a flop? I want to see it. I had

a lot of knee -jerk reactions when I saw the

original promo pictures. I didn't even know it

was out yet because I'm behind, like I said.

But yeah, I'm interested. Nate, you'll probably

be interested too. Frozen, which brought in another

3 million this week, is creeping ever so close

to the 400 million milestone. It's at 393. That's

good. And that's domestic. Well we talked about

when we were talking about with 2014 and in order

to make like to be one of the top 10 grossing

films of the year usually you have to break like

the 200 million mark that's kind of like the

milestone to break into that top 10 and so frozen

is almost about to break into the 400 which let

me pull up the all -time box office real quick

for domestic because I believe it is now in the

top 20 yeah just it just got to the 19th spot

So it has about 9 million more before it will

pass Transformers Revenge of the Fallen for 18th

all time domestic gross. Really? Transformers?

Alright. Yeah, Transformers makes a lot of money.

That's why we're getting another one. Hey, just

so the viewers know, to kind of get a feel for

what I like, last year my top two movies, because

that's all I can really remember, is number one

was Frozen, number two was Pacific Rim. So, you

know, those are not bad choices. Those are the

types of movies I like. I've not seen Pacific

Rim and that bothers me on a whole level. That

bothers me as well. Oh my gosh, Matt, you got

to come over. We got to watch that. I got a Blu

-ray. Okay, and what we also do is we usually

update the year. Obviously, it's not as interesting

right now because the year is fairly new, but

yearly so far, the top spot is The Lego Movie

with $224 million, followed by Rock. Yeah, followed

by Ride Along, The Monuments Men, The Nut Job,

and RoboCop right now is in that fifth spot,

but it will not be, I don't think, very much

longer. So that's what your top five is so far

2014. And then looking slightly ahead, I don't

know if there's anything that's really going

to be competing this week. We have a couple things

that are coming out. I guess the biggest thing

that might displace 300 would be Need for Speed,

which comes out on an early Thursday release,

I believe. So we'll have to see if Need for Speed

can take over that top spot from 300 or how it

will fare next week. Any other thoughts before

we move on about the box office? Go ahead, Matt.

I said no. Okay. Don't know I can't see why that

what the appeal for new need for speed is it's

it's just another fast and the furious I don't

get it. That is my thought the actors are alive

for this one. Oh Come on that does help you that

and there are people like There are people like

are one of my podcasting guys They're the one

of the founders of the network TFG one Mike who

is dying for need for speed because he is retarded

I'm just kidding Mike But he likes Fast and Furious

franchise, and he's super excited for Need for

Speed. So maybe some people will want to go see

that. I won't be one of them. They can fly cars

around. Just make flying car movies. Just make

Back in the Future 2 again. I don't want a live

action Jetsons. I'm throwing that out there now.

I want a cartoon Jetson. Or do I? Oh, and Nate,

I should point out we don't have any viewers.

We only have listeners. That's what, did I say

viewers? Dang it! I screwed up the whole podcast

already! I do that a lot of times when people

feel the need to point it out. So I was like,

yay, I can point it out to somebody else. All

right. Getting into a few of the news and headlines

for the week before we get to the main attraction.

Not a huge week as far as news goes. Pretty light,

except for the amount of trailers. There was

a lot of trailers that came out. But as far as

headlines, I didn't even realize that this actress

was not doing movies currently, so I just felt

it interesting to bring it up just to see maybe

somebody else was aware that she had been taking

the last four years off. Apparently, Renee Zellweger

is about to do a new movie and she hasn't done

a movie in four years. Did anybody realize that?

No. I didn't realize it, but I like her, so I'm

glad. A lot of people probably know her from

Jerry Maguire, Bridget Jones Diary, etc. Oscar

for Cold Mountain, and then she kind of disappeared

for, I guess, four years. So she's coming back

in a courtroom drama thriller of some sort. So

we'll see how that goes. But yeah, I did not

know she was out of action for four years. And

kind of on the flip side, I don't have this link

in the website post that will be made. Chris

Evans, I don't know if you guys heard about this,

but apparently as soon as his, uh, we're talking

about Captain America there, as soon as his contract

expires with Marvel, apparently he is no longer

pursuing acting gigs. At all? He's done. He made

the best movie he could make. He said once his

Marvel contract goes, he's not interested in

acting anymore. He's going to try to do some

directing and behind the scenes stuff. Ah, lame.

I was hoping he was like gonna, he's like, I

want to go open up a deli or something weird.

So, enter Renee Zellweger, exit Chris Evans,

I guess. I'm actually depressed about that. Like,

of all of the Marvel movies that created the

Avengers, the Captain America one was my favorite.

Really? Yeah. It was solid. I liked it. This

is an ongoing discussion. It comes up in the

network all the time about everyone's different

opinions about the Marvel Universe and which

films are good and which films are bad. What

is your favorite of the Marvel films that have

already been released? Of all of them? Well,

outside of The Avengers. The components that

made up The Avengers. I really liked Iron Man

3. Iron Man 3 was really good, but I don't know,

maybe I just like the Captain America character,

so I'm like biased, I guess. I almost want to

say The Hulk with Edward Norton, even though

I'm not sure if that counts because they got

a new actor. But I don't think that's the best.

I just think that was the best Hulk movie that

could ever be made. And it was like, wow, you

did it. You made an OK Hulk movie. Yeah, it's

not even that great. It's just OK. It's above

average. I mean, you couldn't do better. I mean,

they casted Tim Roth. So, you know. Oh, I love

Tim Roth. Me too. Alright, in the next headline

we have apparently Noah, the film from Darren

Aronofsky starring Russell Crowe is already coming

up against some criticism from the Middle East.

It's been banned in Qatar, Bahrain, and the United

Arab Emirates and it's saying that Egypt, Jordan,

and Kuwait might be following suit. So, apparently

Noah will not be making as much international

money as it may be hoped for, and it's going

to have to rely a lot on the domestic gross.

I think it will do well domestically. Yeah, have

you guys seen, have either of you seen the trailer

for Noah? It looks awesome. I'm not going to

lie, until you sent me the thing, I did not know

that there was going to be a Noah movie. Yes,

we had Son of God and now we're gonna get Noah

and then later on we're gonna get Christian Bale

as Moses in a film called Exodus. Wasn't Son

of God just a repurposed documentary or something?

No, there was the miniseries that aired, I don't

know what channel it aired on, called The Bible.

It aired this past fall slash winter and apparently

it's a continuation or it's in connection with

that but i didn't see any of that so i really

am kind of ignorant to the to the topic i just

know it seemed bizarre because they're trying

to cover all of the life of jesus in one film

and that seems to be well i mean they've done

that before i've seen multiple movies about the

life of christ like all of it too because they're

doing way too much in one film like at least

this one we're just focusing on one event with

noah or one event with uh... exodus The the scale

of this film as far as like just being an epic

like Type of blockbuster seems to be all there.

I mean, you know, it's Russell Crowe doing his

gladiator type thing And that can be fun and

it's got a who else got Anthony Hopkins Jennifer

Connolly, I'm Watson So yeah, it's always interesting

to see how the biblical based films or stories

do overseas, it's usually... I mean, what was

the one that did Fantastic? Passion of the Christ

obviously did Fantastic just about everywhere,

but there's always going to be some backlash

from different religious -centered countries.

We'll see. We'll see how NOAA does. It's a big

question mark that we have as far as what NOAA

and what Exodus will do if they'll be flops or

if they'll live up to their, I'm assuming, slightly

large budgets. And the other headline we have,

apparently, there is talks of a remake for West

Side Story. I'm into this idea. Oh, absolutely.

I will watch five different retakes of West Side

Story back to back for a whole day. For those

of you that don't know, the original film was

a 60s film, made in 1961, had ten Academy Awards,

including Best Picture and Best Director. So

that's kind of a big bill to live up to. But

Fox has secured the rights, and the person that

they are attaching to the rumors about this film

is none other than Steven Spielberg. That sounds

awesome. So he's not... Spielberg's never made

a musical. No. That sounds awesome. It's risky.

It's risky, but hey, maybe he wants to do something

he's never done before, and it's... Seems to

be a time where a lot of musicals are doing pretty

well and done pretty well. You know, we've had

Chicago, we've had Les Mis, we've had quite a

different variety of, you know, even going back

to like Moulin Rouge, so maybe West Side Story

could be something he could pull off. Dude, I

haven't seen the 60 film. Oh, it's so good. You

haven't seen it? No, I haven't seen the 1961

film. Dude, we gotta, I don't think I own it,

but we gotta watch that. We've got to add it

to our stack. The ever -growing stack on my coffee

table. But we knocked a few out this week, so

there's room for other ones to take their place.

So interesting to see what people's reaction,

if there's going to be a lot of people interested

in a new West Side story, or if that's something

that people don't really care about. We'll see.

And we always seem to find at least one or two

sequels or remakes to talk about. And this one

is another sequel. in the form of human centipede.

Talking about the third one. Apparently, according

to the director, it's going to be less gross

than the first two. Which, if you take the grossness

out, doesn't that lose the whole point? That

is the whole point of the movie. I thought that

was the whole point. Matt, did we ever watch

the first human centipede? No, I don't think

it was out by the time all of our things had

ended. But I've never seen any of the human centipedes.

I probably never will. I don't like horror or

gross. But I've had the first one begrudgingly

explained to me at work. I told him to stop many

times. He kept doing it. And yeah, it's not going

to be hard to be less gross. I have the exact

same experience. It's not something that I don't

go for that type of stuff, so I usually don't

watch it. But I also had it explained to me,

not at work, but I think at a friend's house

or something, somebody explained it to me. I'm

saying it's going to be less gross, but more

controversial as far as political -wise. They

got Obama doing it now! And it's apparently set

in an American maximum security prison in the

middle of the desert. Oh, so it's like the Abu

Ghraib centipede. We'll see. So people that like

the first or the second human centipede, I guess

they'll be excited for a number. They'll probably

be mad about it. They'll probably be like, what

is this? They tone down the violence. They're

spelling it out. They're making us nervous. Nearly

gross enough. I need to see more ass to mouth.

Anyway, as far as casting call, we only had one

bit of news there this week, and it has to do

with a voice casting part. I don't know if you

guys are aware of this, but Jon Favreau is doing

a live action Jungle Book adaptation. It's had

a lot of different names attached to it, but

this is the first time that we've heard that

there's going to be voices to some of the animals,

and Idris Elba is apparently signed on to do

the voice of Sheer Khan. First of all, just in

general, would you guys be interested in a live

action Jungle Book or a Jon Favreau live action

Jungle Book, or do you think this has been done

enough before? I've not seen any of the Jungle

Books, any version of it, but I like that actor.

So I'm interested for that much. I'm interested

to see what Jon Favreau does with it. Obviously,

you know, he's had a lot of success in the comic

book movie genre. So it'd be interesting to see

how he takes on a classic like that. Yeah, I

mean, you can make a good movie about anything

and, you know, talking animals is what I like

usually. I want to get a dancing bear, though.

That's what I remember of the Jungle Book is

there's a dancing bear. You got to get a good

blue. Yeah. And apparently it's going to be obviously

a combination of live action and CGI. So we will

see how that goes and then what else. They have

actual talking animals. They're actual talking

animals. And we'll see what other casting rumors

come about as we hear more about the Jungle Book

and as it shapes up a little bit. As far as our

trailer talk, where there wasn't a lot of news

this week, there was a whole lot of trailers

released and we'll have links to all of them

on the website post. So you can view all of them

there and comment on them. Nate, was there any

trailers there that caught your eye or that you

thought were interesting? Annie. Annie? We talked

about this a long time ago, Dan and I, when it

first got rumored that there was going to be

a sequel of Annie. And then it listed all the

cast members. And it's one of the people behind

it, Will Smith. And somebody else is the main

one heading up this whole venture. What about

it caught your eye there? It's a remake of Annie.

I didn't know they were doing that and I saw

the list and I was like Annie what? So I clicked

it and then I was pleasantly surprised I Don't

know if I am as excited about that one It looks

it looks bad. Okay, like seriously It looks like

a bad version of Annie, but it looks like it

came out in 1997 like that's the type of film

that they came out with Dating all 1997 movies

as bad remakes of classic. No, it's just like

that's the type of like kids Movies that came

out in the 90s like they were just so ridiculous.

It's like Matilda. Yeah. Oh, no Matilda's amazing

This any this any looks good like if it here's

the thing I feel like if they didn't tag Annie's

name to it they just called it whatever I'd have

been like Like that's a little bit like Annie,

but not quite and I think that's a problem But

it's like, that's like that thing, but not quite

what it's supposed to be taking the name. It

looks like it's a solid movie. It's probably

enjoyable family film. Um, but they're changing

everything. Like what? Oh, well, yeah, I guess

they are changing the story pretty much. Yeah.

I'm sure it'll be like a hip hop version of those

songs. No, maybe. I mean, Hard Knock Life was

kind of hip hoppy anyway. They had a couple more,

you know. Didn't Jay -Z do a Hard Knock Life

song? Uh, yeah. I think that that's right. That

sounds accurate. Robbie would know. He's not

here. That doesn't help us. Nate, any other ones?

Did you see the second Dunbox Troll trailer?

No, I actually did not. I assumed it was the

one I've already seen, so I didn't click on it.

I've seen two of them. One of them was showing

the making of. Is that the second one? No, the

second one is just a song, and it just follows

them around, like some of the footage from the

film, basically. None of the trailers have...

revealed too much about the actual story. But

as far as a visual thing, it does give you a

pretty good idea of what it's going to look like.

Yeah, I go just for the visuals on that movie.

Every time I see them, I want to start patting

my chest, and I haven't even seen the movie,

so it's already infectious enough. I can't wait

to see the real thing. Yeah, it should be good.

What else did you see there, Nate? Well, I had

to watch the Transformers. Marky Mark and the

Transformers. They keep inching away from just

the shards of metal and stuff smashed together.

The fucking problem with Marky Mark. Dino bots

and big dinosaur type pterodactyls and things

like that Optimus prime has a sword on his back.

That's what that looks cool. But like I don't

know We'll see it'll make a lot of money. Yeah,

maybe maybe by transformers 10 They'll have one

that's you know, good for classic transformers

fans Yeah, you have they progressively get like

more colorful and back lightly slightly closer

to the originals every time but seriously though,

um Never mind. I forgot what even if they would

have just I don't know they could have gone even

with the designs from like the video games I

would have been oh, yeah, the games are good

video games were solid. I liked those Yeah, well

the first one look I don't know if either of

you guys saw the the trailer for Legends of Oz

Dorothy. Oh, yeah turn. Yeah, I uh, okay yard

sale. It's pretty cool on that one I got to bring

that up because that movie has was supposed to

be released in 2012 Oh, no. And then it was supposed

to be released in 2013. Yeah. And now it's actually

finally going to be released. And I remember

the reason I knew about it back in 2012 was because

of the voice cast attached to this. It's just

ridiculous. Kelsey Grammer, Akroyd, Belushi,

Patrick Stewart. Oh, that's a good one. Martin

Short. Yes, Martin Short. I mean, so I had like

this ridiculous voice cast. Yeah. And it looks

a little different than the first art that was

released and the first pictures. It looks a little

more, I don't know, kiddy or almost more juvenile.

Yeah, it's stylized. It does look like more of

a child's film as opposed to like the Pixar films

which are more sophisticated in the animation,

I guess the word would be. Yeah. And I'm just

worried that I'm hoping that they were just delaying

it to try to line up with the whole whatever

it is. And I think it's like the 75th anniversary

of Wizard of Oz this year. So hopefully that

was more the reason than just like problems with

it. I don't know. I can't see. I honestly can't

see a studio delaying a movie for any reason

other than shit's going wrong because they're

losing money as they're delaying it. Yeah. Well,

I mean, sometimes there is and we've talked about

a lot, Dan and I, on this podcast. There is a...

kind of a chess game that goes on with the different

studios as far as their release dates. Sometimes

delays are strategic. They try to not go against

certain things or come out at certain times of

the year. There's always a domino effect. When

the next Star Wars film was slated for next December,

all of a sudden you saw films being delayed and

pushed back and moved earlier. Get out of the

way. We do not want to compete with that. So

sometimes there is other reasons for delays,

but this one just seems to be like probably a

bad delay. I don't know. Matt, any trailers that

you saw that looked interesting? I don't know.

I watched the Sin City. I didn't know there was

going to do a Sin City. And I'm not 100 % sure

where it falls in with the other movie. It's

been nearly a decade since the previous Sin City

came out. And Marv is in the trailer, although

I'm pretty sure he died in the first one. That

was kind of the whole point, right? I don't know

where it falls in, but I'm interested. It has

most of the cast, right? It has Jessica Alba.

It has Mickey Rourke reprising the role. Bruce

Willis. Bruce Willis is back. What? Yeah. Have

you seen the first one? He killed himself. So

I don't know where this one falls in. Spoilers!

Apparently we need to see the first one again.

Yeah, I don't remember that happening, but yeah.

I'm totally down for re -watching Sin City. It

was a great move. What? What? You don't remember?

Well, never mind. Fine. It's not the best. Did

either of you see the trailer for Frank? Nate

mentioned it. Yeah, that looks weird. What's

going on there? Michael Fassbender has a big

fake head over his head. He reminds me of the

Davey and Goliath character. Oh my goodness,

yes he does. Oh jeez. That is a good call right

there. Is he the one with the head thing? What's

that? Is he the only one with the weird head

or is everyone guessing? Yeah. No, it's just

him. He's wearing this big giant head and then

he describes what his facial expressions are

and stuff. I don't know. I'm gonna be watching

that later. Anything else that any of you guys

wanted to bring up before we talk about the main

movies today? Me either. Alright, so if you are

interested in the trailer for Jupiter Ascending

or a few other ones that we did in the double,

The Grace of Monaco, Lock, you can check those

out at the website and give us your comments

on that. And we will move on to our main attraction,

which, you know, usually in the past we've talked

about one recent film that Dan and I have both

seen. We're going to change it up a little bit

as you probably realize we didn't do the What

We're Watching segment at the beginning. So we're

going to kind of combine those into one segment

from here on out, where we just talk about all

the different films that we've seen over the

week in the main attraction. There might be films

that were released in the theater recently. They

might be just films that we caught, that two

of us watched together, or one of us watched,

or whatever. So I'm going to change it up a little

bit. And the first film we're going to talk about

today, which we already started talking a little

bit about in person, so we'll have to rehash

some of that. But Nathan and I watched. the first

Superman recently and I know Matt you and Robbie

who we mentioned before had recently gone through

all the Supermans. How long ago? Within the last

six weeks we watched Superman 1 through 4 and

Superman Returns. So we all have recently seen

the first original Superman there so we're going

to talk a little bit about that. I don't know

who wants to start with their thoughts on that

film and for those people that have never listened

before when we talk about the films that are

out in theaters we will keep those spoilers.

uh... spoiler -free as much as possible for some

of the older films were not quite as strict on

that because most likely people have seen that

so spoilers happen to be mentioned that is fine

with these older films so who wants to uh...

go first on superman and their thoughts you go

Matt uh... i got a lot of thoughts i loved it

um... it's great i think having watched all four

of the supermans and uh... superman returns and

man of steel i can say without any doubts that

uh... chris Christopher Reeves is the greatest

Superman of all time. I think he does Superman

well and I think he does Clark Kent even better.

I think a lot of films really don't focus on

Clark Kent enough and how he's a different guy

entirely than Superman and I love how well Christopher

Reeves portrays that. you know, the Spider -Man

films, but I think you bring up a good point

where there's more of a difference between Superman

and Clark Kent than there is even between, you

know, like Spider -Man and some of these other

people and their alter egos, etc. Yeah, yeah,

like Iron Man is the same guy regardless of whether

he's wearing a suit or not. Yeah. Right. But

yeah. What was your favorite scene in Superman

1? Well, see, I liked the... I want to say the

part where Lois Lane thinks she's saving Clark

Kent but he grabs the bullet and like looks at

the camera with a little smile like I know I'm

Superman. Like that moment really just solidified

that movie to me. What about you Nate? What's

your favorite scene from the film? I like the

scene where he jumps out the window and magically

turned into Superman. That was not one of the

higher points of that film. No seriously because

like... He's always changing clothes, and they

did a little bit where he can't find the phone

booth. He finds the half phone booth. Yeah, and

he's like, ah, you can't do that there. But no,

they just gave up. Halfway through the movie.

They're like I jumped out of the window and he

starts lying and then he goes from like a suit

to Superman clothes immediately like that Yeah,

cuz they did the turnstile some other things

and then that one it was just like oh he has

changed Spoilers that's pretty much how it goes

from there on they don't really Clothes just

fade away Superman like after that one My favorite

scene in the film which I told you guys a little

bit off -air is the scene where Lois Lane is

interviewing Claire, or interviewing Superman,

excuse me, on the rooftop or whatever that was,

balcony, et cetera. And I thought it was just

really good from both of them. I think it sets

up both of their characters and their relationship

a lot. And I thought it was the best time in

the whole film where Christopher Reeve was really

showing the Superman side of things. and showing

his like charisma and showing just his whole

personality is how he was answering and not answering

questions. I thought that whole scene was done

really well. And then they followed that up immediately

with my least favorite scene in the film, which

is the two of them. Yeah, they both go on the

magic carpet ride, at which case at one point

during it Superman decides to just drop on his

leg. He thinks that's pretty funny. And then

she does too, she's like, oh, you got me. You

got me again, Superman. Are you kidding me? Like

she was just free falling through the sky at

a very fast rate, plunging to her death. And

he's just like, oh, that's funny. There was a

lot of bad dialogue in that scene. But it was

interesting that they back those two scenes up

against each other. Yeah. You said that Christopher

Reeve is your favorite Superman. Nate, have you

seen enough to know who your favorite Superman

actor is? I know it's not this new guy from Man

of Steel. He's a little wooden. My favorite Superman

guy is the guy who played Superman directly before

Christopher Reeve in this movie who got no mention.

Oh my gosh, yes, yes. For those of you who haven't

seen Superman 1. You need to go back and rewatch

it because a lot of times in film history you'll

have a character that grows over the course of

a movie. I think Nate and I talked about like

Simba even from The Lion King, like during the

Hakuna Matata song, you know, goes from young

Simba to adult Simba. You see that a lot in films.

What they did in this film is they took a 20

year old Superman and a whole different actor

for him and then they transitioned into Christopher

Reeve playing the same character like two years

later yeah it was like it was like he could have

just carried on the entire movie the this uh...

this no -name actor there was no need for a switch

in actors but I'm glad that they did because

Christopher Reeve is better I actually I remember

watching that and I turned to Robbie and I was

like is that Christopher Reeve am I just bad?

like I thought he looked different well see I

was confused because okay Nathan and I had this

big conversation because unless we completely

missed it at the beginning of the movie they're

putting actors names on the screen like they

did in a lot more in older films than they do

in and newer films and you know they put uh...

uh... what gene hackman's name up there uh...

and who else they they put a bunch of those names

out there and who the devil the famous games

oh no no no marlon brando yet right marlon brando

gene hackman and they kept putting names up there

and i think that's where they never put his previous

name up there and that were like that Okay, he's

gonna be one of those people that they do at

the end where it's like and featuring or and

introducing and and they didn't do that either

And then we have this kid playing what I thought

was the adult version of Superman. I'm like wait

a second Christopher Reeve is in this movie,

right? Like I'm pretty sure that's how it's built

So there was just a weird transition between

those two actors. I thought What about your guys

thought on on Lex Luthor in that film? He's a

silly version of Lex Luthor. I'll tell you that

Um, I see, I don't know, I've got, with comic,

my big comic book background, I have, like, interesting

theories on Lex Luthor. Because this one, he's

just evil. Like, that's the important thing,

is he's evil. And, uh, and I think he takes a

very interesting slant on, uh, Lex Luthor. I

don't think he's bad, I think he's great. Um,

I don't think Gene Hackman might have been the

best choice. I think the Lex Luthor lines and

roles were done well. But Gene Hackman would

not be my first choice. Then or now. Yeah, it's

like a weird casting choice. He almost reminded

me of... Matt, have you seen the spirit? Have

I showed you the spirit? I saw spirit in theaters,

actually. Oh, good. He almost reminded me of

the octopus with his silly henchmen. Yeah. He

just had a woman around him for some reason.

Tess Mocker. Mrs. Tess Mocker. Yeah. I actually,

fingers crossed and praying that they bring Tess

Mocker back in the next one. I thought she was

annoying. I thought she was a comic release that

might not have been necessary, but I kind of

hope she makes it a reappearance. I don't know.

I just like the name, I guess. That's a fun name.

Nate, what other thoughts do you have on the

first Superman? I don't know, I enjoyed it. It

was definitely an entertaining movie, but it

just had some weird stuff for me, I guess. It

had a lot of good things and then some weird

things, but it's a product of its time. Yeah,

definitely. They were making a movie for kids,

Superman. And that sort of mentality of making

a movie for kids is how they should approach

making a Superman movie nowadays. Because, you

know, Superman is for kids. I don't understand

why he's got to be all sad and... Great, because

of the Dark Knight. Yeah, because the Dark Knight

made a lot of fun of you. I did have a... I remember

us talking about it during the film, too, about

the... the Kryptonite. Oh, yeah, yeah! He's just

like, hey, I got this rock from Krypton. It's

gonna hurt Superman. Why is that why is that

like I find it an encyclopedia or something to

it like he brings out a news article like like

there were there like I don't know just like

30 years ago there was a Another thing that I

guess going backwards when Superman tells Lois

Lane Like that interview they have which I love

you know like it's Kevin's favorite scene. It's

I one of my favorite scenes Because it has a

different slide. I don't I don't think of Superman

making sexual innuendos like he does in that,

but he totally can and would. Why wouldn't he?

He's Superman. But he tells her his weaknesses,

like, I can't see through lead, and then Lex

Luthor reads the paper and uses that against

him. Well, and I think also that's kind of like

his character. He's a bit naive. Yeah, totally.

He's like, oh, well, no one's actually going

to be mean to me. Why would they be mean? I'm

Superman. I'm Superman. I'm doing good. There

was just a couple times during that film where

they just assume we know everything about Superman,

so everybody in the film must also know the things

about Superman. Like, even Lois Lane, earlier

than she should have, knew about Superman's powers.

Like, she asks him about his X -ray vision. Oh,

yeah. I'm like, well, she hasn't seen him use

it. How does she know he has it? There was a

couple couple times like that like like you said

with the the kryptonite like I don't know how

he knows that's gonna hurt Superman but we'll

go with it because it's a superhero movie and

Sometimes you gotta just go with things Um, but

yeah, I was I was questioning how she knew about

the x -ray vision before he had displayed it

But it led to a good sexual innuendo. So there

you go Matt what else do you want to talk about

with Superman? Anything that you didn't like

about it? Well, so I hadn't I've seen the old

Superman movies. I'd always heard about them.

And there were a few elements of that one that

I didn't know that he did the rewind time in

the first movie. That was so surprising to me.

I thought that was a later movie. It's kind of

a cheesy thing. When you're watching two, three,

and four, you're just going, why didn't he just

rewind time? He could win. Oh, I forgot about

the rewinding time thing. That's the whole end

of it. Yeah, and he even the thing is is like

he didn't even rewind time to like not have the

the nuclear blast go off He just around time

to not let her die Yeah, that said I didn't know

the rewind time thing was gonna happen. So when

Lois Lane is like falling into that pit I'm like,

they're not gonna kill Lois Lane and I kept saying

that in my head over and over I went they killed

Lois Lane and then you're on time and I was like,

oh that's That's a thing that happened. And they

do that, actually. I've never seen him do that

in the comics. I've read a lot of comics. I've

never seen Superman Rewind Time like that. But

in every movie, they add one weird power that's

like, Superman doesn't have that in each one.

But he never uses it in any of the other ones.

The fun of Hollywood. Yeah. All right. Moving

on from Superman, switching it a little bit,

I don't know if you've seen this film or not,

Matt, I guess I'm assuming you have, but if not,

Nate and I can talk about it a little bit. We

also saw, we were re -watching another set of,

apparently there was four films that I did not

know about, and that is the Blade franchise.

Nathan and I watched the first Blade a couple

nights ago. Matt, have you seen the first Blade?

I have not seen any of the Blades, and I wish

I have. Well, we will keep this spoiler free

then for the most part then. But Nate, what was

your take on the first play? Did you like it

or not? I thought it was okay. It's a pretty

standard 90s action movie. The one thing that

I was upset that I felt like was a missed opportunity

was that Wesley Snipes, his character, there

was like a slight bit of humanity in him that

kept showing through. Slightly, but not enough

like I wanted him to be a real character, but

he was just a standard action guy You know from

the 90s that could be swapped in and I love the

90s. I hate us. Oh I'm sorry I'm not saying like

Okay, I shouldn't say from the 90s I should just

say a standard action hero that can be swapped

out with any other you go back to the 80s or

the or even now you can you can make blade Jason

Statham and It would be weird because that's

a weird choice of blade But I mean he's not gonna

act any differently, you know Yeah, he almost

like was to me given that Dark Knight feel before

the Dark Knight like he was just that like dark

and brooding thing, but what they didn't do with

him as much, and this is, I'm not gonna say too

much about it, but I don't feel like they, outside

of the opening scene, gave him too much of an

actual backstory with development. Oh yeah, he

had no character development the whole time.

You get the initial scene and then you just kind

of jump ahead and there's really no talk about

what happens between those times. Again, with

an action superhero film, sometimes there's not

a lot of time for that, but I think you can still

fit it in somewhere. Yeah, I mean, it's been

proven that you can make a good movie. You can

make a good action movie, definitely. And I think

Wesley Snipes is a good choice for that character.

Oh, yeah. I mean, I just wish he played it a

little more with enthusiasm instead of with a

mean look on his face and not really saying anything

ever. Yeah. Maybe that just comes with being

a daywalker. But I thought the cast was good.

Chris Christopherson is good. Stephen Dorff is

good. Wesley Snipes is good. But yeah, I agree

with you in a way. It didn't have a whole lot

of stuff that separates it from the rest of its

genre. Yeah, yeah. All right. Well, we will move

on then to a film that I saw half of. Yay! And

this will give you a sense of what we talk about

when we're talking about crappy movie night.

I don't know how many people out there realize

it, but there was a sequel to Titanic. No, no,

it's not a sequel. It's not actually a sequel.

It was a sequel to the real life Titanic. Yes,

yes, that is how they're getting around the trademark.

Yeah. Well, I mean, it was a boat. It is titled

Titanic 2, right? Yep. Yes, but it's, well, Titanic

2, like, aye, aye, but it's like the Fantastic

Four, where that's the name of this thing that

the movie is about? Yeah. It's not Fantastic

One, Two, and Three. There was no Titanic One.

This is a new boat called the Zip. The boat was

actually called the Titanic Two. Yeah. It wasn't

like the Titanic again. Oh, oh, oh. All right.

So I want to explain the synopsis, though. Hold

on. I just want to tell people there will be

spoilers for this one. Yeah. We don't care. No,

because really you can't spoil this film. Writers

and directors and actors did it all. Yes, we

could tell you every moment of this film It's

not gonna spoil your experience that you would

have if you watch it Because you're not gonna

believe most of the stuff we say anyway So you

do need to see it for yourself And if anyone

out there thinks like the idea of having crappy

movie night is is intriguing. This is a great

one to start with Me it maybe Well, you guys

can give suggestions on other ones to start with

this is a great things to watch because this

is this is prototypical crappy movie material.

So Nate go ahead with the synopsis of Titanic

2. Okay so the synopsis of Titanic 2 is they

made a ship called Titanic 2 and then iceberg

catapults. There was a lot of threads that I

think they thought they were weaving that they

just weren't because it was like It's the 100th

anniversary of the original Titanic, and this

one guy who's like Bruce Wayne without a Batman,

he's just got too much money, doesn't know what

to do with it, he's always got ladies. He's like,

I'm just gonna make a new Titanic, why not? And

then like, wow, IMDB has it wrong for what it's

saying. Things go wrong. Yeah, because of global

warming, of course. It seems like every crappy

movie has to have that Like, global warming is

bad theme. It's so weird. Titanic 2 and Birdemic

are the only ones that come to my mind. Those

were the only two that came to my mind as well.

I did not realize that this film was released

in 2010. Oh, you didn't know that? I thought

this was way older than that. Just for a little

bit of background, the Asylum did this. They're

the same people that came out with Sharknado,

which has had a lot of recent fame. They've done

a lot of interesting movies. And this is not

one of them. No, this one is interesting enough.

I missed the part that DC Douglas was in this.

I did not realize that. Who's DC Douglas? He

played a character named Captain Will Howard.

And DC Douglas is a voice actor. He's done a

lot of anime stuff, a lot of video games, and

I did not realize he was in this film. Anyways,

continue. I'm looking at his picture right now,

and I don't remember when he was in this. He

was the captain that went down with the ship,

remember? He had the moment where the ship's

going down, and he's just staring out crying.

I commented then that it's probably because he

has to go down with Titanic 2, which everyone

knew was going to go down because it's the Titanic

2. He didn't even want to be where he was, but

the guy who owns the ship's like, keep driving

towards those icebergs, it'll be fine. It's the

voice of Albert Wesker from the Resident Evil

video games. Oh, no way. He's Wesker! Oh, God!

I love the critical reaction on Wikipedia for

Titanic 2. It just says, was panned by critics

and audience and is considered to be a very bad

and offensive rip -off. Yeah, they totally ripped

off the, like, Jack's dying scene. It says criticisms

were mostly focused on the film's plot, script,

and Shane Van Dyke's direction. I want ladies

around me in every scene. That's the direction.

The thing is that he actually had some character

development in that he was all like, I'm over

this chick, and now I've got all these other

girls. And then the Titanic's have to go down.

And he's all like, maybe I'm not over her. It

was always about chicks. It was. It was always

about chicks. Well, actually, because you remember

that one moment where it starts going down, and

his personal helicopter's like, hey, we got to

get out of here. And he's all like, no, load

up the injured three chicks that were with me.

They'll survive, and I'll go down with the Titanic.

Yeah. All right. So what are some of your favorite

moments from the film, guys? I like the iceberg

catapult as a concept. Because what was happening

was global warming was breaking down the icebergs

as it happened, or whatever. of iceberg would

fall off and create a wave and this is actually

how the movie opened with the guys surfing on

these chunks of iceberg making these waves but

then like a big chunk fell off and it pushed

made like a giant wave that pushed the other

you know 30 chunks and just made a catapult effect

for the heat with a giant wave and when it eventually

made it down to the titanic was like an iceberg

shotgun into the side of the titanic but it but

the iceberg was twice the size of the titanic

too It was ridiculous. It's not a visible thing

I'm supposed to notice that I didn't. Yeah, it

was like, it was huge. The only thing I remember

in relation was the clipart whale that they threw

in the ice. Oh, yeah. Yeah, someone in the effects

team just threw in a whale in a scene just for

no reason. It served no function and it was the

only time there was any marine life in the whole

movie. And it was so unbelievable that we had

to rewind it to make sure that there was actually

a whale in the scene. It was very brief. And

I say rewind because I'm pretending that we watched

this on VHS back in the 80s sometime. Oh DVD,

or you can rewind Netflix. I feel like you're

not rewinding so much, you're not really winding.

There's no binding, there's no tape. There's

a lack of winding going on. I didn't know the

Asylum also did a film called Snakes on a Train.

Oh yeah! I've seen that on Crappy Move Night.

We did that. That has the most awkward sex scene

I've ever seen in a movie. The cop essentially

rates a woman, but does it, like he's just like,

oh, there's snakes on this train. Take your top

off. You just need a room, though. The room?

What about the room? The awkward sex scenes in

the room? That's not nearly, that's not half

as awkward as the cop just like taking your top

off. Now jiggle a little bit. Take your pants

off. And then like a snake hits him in the throat

or something. I don't remember. It's been a few

years. But yeah, he's just like the best thing

to this chick and it's like he's the cop. He's

the only supposed good guy on this whole train

while snakes are going awry. And then that one's

ending is really bad. Yeah. Wait. They have two

films. I don't want to steal it. They have two

films coming out this year. One of them is called

Android Cop and the other is called Megashark

versus Mecha Shark. Here's the thing. That sums

up the asylum. perfectly. There's a few things

Asylum does. They make animal disaster style

movies and then they make, what do they call

them? Mockbusters. They take a plot that's gonna

be a blockbuster movie and then remake it. I

guess with what you've been saying Robocop might

not have been the best one to choose but they

probably start casting and shooting before anything

happens. I can't wait to see Android Cop though.

There's a bunch of these that I need to see though.

Nazis at the center of the earth. Netflix has

got that. Netflix has got most of them, so I

can't wait. We got to talk about the my favorite

scene from the film from the from the half that

I saw which is the hallway scene or corridor

scene. There is a scene in this film where at

this point it's Shane Van Dyke's character and

one of his girls. I don't know their names because

it wasn't important. Really what? And they were

trying to get to the room with the closet. I

don't remember what that room was called, like

the diving something room. Anyways, they're trying

to get to that room. And they have to go down

this corridor. And there is a random electrical

cable that has been fleeced and is causing all

kinds of sparks and whatnot. And the whole hallway

is full of water except for apparently the two

ends of the hallway. Because they're clearly

standing at the end of the hallway and not being

electrocuted. Just like a video game. So he has

to jump onto and grab the pipes that are going

where the ceiling would be and he has to basically

monkey bar his way across this watery hallway

so that he doesn't electrocute himself. And then

she has to follow. And they make this epic dramatic

type scene where she apparently can no longer

go across and he's already been across so now

he has to go back up there to try to help her

out and literally all that has happened is she

was like doing the one monkey bar and she didn't

get it on her first try where she didn't grab

the pole you know when you swing the first time

and apparently she couldn't swing a second time

so he had to jump up there and like literally

take her hand and put it back on the pole so

that she could go across. Is that a good retelling

of how that scene went? Yeah. It was completely

underwhelming what he actually did. But you know

that when he was actually shooting the scene,

he was like, make sure you get how good my arms

look doing this. Oh, god. Not to mention that

they originally tried to make it more dramatic

because when he was on there, they were acting

like it couldn't hold his weight and it was going

to possibly fall. And then their solution is

for both of them to be up there at the same time.

Putting all of their weight together and then

luckily they fall like a foot away from the court

and it doesn't kill them And then there's also

the scene when they are The water is coming up,

you know, we have our Leonardo DiCaprio scene

where we got it We got to decide which one of

us is gonna survive And then they forced themselves

to have the romantic kiss as they're drowning

Yeah, it was really for she was like I can't

believe admitting paid to do this But nothing

was better. This film is worth watching a hundred

percent for the ending. Definitely. Let's not

spoil it because it's on Netflix and anyone can

watch it. I don't remember what you're talking

about. Oh my goodness. What are you talking about?

It's possibly the best... Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah,

yeah, yeah. The end with the rose moment. Yeah,

okay, I get you. It was it was painful to watch

This film ends like no other film I've ever seen

in my life better well I don't know if I want

to spoil this But one thing Titanic 2 does better

with their ending than Titanic the one number

one the good Titanic Is that I feel like it was

pretty clear like yeah? There's only one of us

can survive and I choose you like where's the

other one? It's like I feel like they both could

have fit on that door Whereas this one it's like

they can only fit and there's only one take of

air and one wetsuit So like yeah, one of you

is going to freeze and drown This one though

did something that I didn't think was gonna happen.

It made it a film called Titanic Where for a

second I was questioning how it was gonna end

So this is definitely a terrible movie that that

you should go watch people Just so you can see

what we're talking about with the ending You

don't even need to watch the rest of the film.

You're not missing anything. Turn it on. Fast

forward. Fast forward. We didn't even mention

Senator Kelly's in it. Oh, yeah. The biggest

actor in this movie is the guy who plays Senator

Kelly in the first X -Men movie. And he needs

Shane Van Dyke to be an honorable man. I remember

that being important. Oh, yeah. No, he's like,

if you don't save my daughter, Yeah, you don't

save people's lives, you're not honorable. There's

no other way to find that honor. Anything else

that you guys want to bring up about Titanic

2 and along the same lines, what movie should

people start with if they want to do a crappy

movie night? Well, Nate mentioned Guy with Seeker

Kung Fu, which if you can get a copy of is the

one that really solidified it for me. I started

with Electric Boogaloo. I watched a couple of

80s movies that were actually just, you know,

regular 80s movies that we had heard about or

whatever, like Adventures of 80s Sitting and

Breaking Two, that weren't actually bad, but

they were dated for sure. Yeah. I don't know,

I want to say The Blood Rain just because if

you watch all three of them, like, just because

that's where I started, the first one, like,

her main villain is the main villain of the video.

hundred years before the video game, so it doesn't

even make sense in that respect. She gains powers

and stuff that she doesn't have in the game,

so they just threw out the whole thing. It's

Uwe Boll. That's what he does. He just takes

a concept and just goes, well, I'm going to ignore

most of the things that are abyss. But the second

one is what really gets me, because you can't

watch second without the first one, ever. And

the second one is where Billy the Kid, the old

Wild West Billy the Kid, is not young. He's called

Billy the Kid because he's a child molester.

He's the main villain, and he's a vampire. He's

a vampire. I don't know how he does gunfights

at high noon. So we wait until he's gotten to

the point where he's ignoring the video game

and history. So he makes this Billy the Kid who's

a vampire, can't be out in the sun, and then

molests children. And that is where you should

start, people. I don't know. Any Fred Williamson

movie from the 70s? Yeah. He's fun. Yeah, like

Warriors of the Wasteland. Whoa. Yeah. That one's

actually not that hard to find. You can look

it up on YouTube. Get the full movie on YouTube.

Really? Yep. So the thing you do, people, is

you get a group of your friends together that

can all... just have fun, you get a bunch of

some pop, caffeine, candy, Taco Bell, whatever,

and you just watch these movies and have fun

with them, and it's a good exercise for not,

I think it allows you to watch anything. It will

train you to give anything a shot and to not

look at things in a closed -minded outlook. How

many times would you say have there been films

that you have stopped before they've gotten all

the way through? I actually made a point to never

stop a film during crappy movie night. I know

I've had people walk out Yeah, actually blood

rain too Nate and Megan left Megan was done with

it. So she left Nate took her home Grave we do

I don't think everyone finished that one Yeah,

there was another one so you have to set your

own rules either can never stop it or maybe you

can have certain films that you... if they're

so bad you have to stop. I personally don't believe

in that concept although there was a few of them.

We stopped after Crabby Moon had ended years

later when we were watching that one like the

police have to hire a kung fu master to save

the world. We stopped that one. That was pretty

bad. I probably could have stopped the... maybe

not. What was the mole man? Mole man? Oh Hercules.

Hercules versus the Mole Men? Yeah. That was

pretty bad, but we still watched it off. That's

not the one where he throws a horse into the

sky and it becomes a constellation, is it? No,

that's the one where the Mole Men are like not

really anything except for people that had, what

did they have, like, masks on or something, and

they were turning that big wheel, there's Hercules,

and then the big strong... Oh, wait! Well, Matt,

I don't think you were there for that one. I've

not seen this movie. Yeah. Oh my goodness. It's

like Hercules, but they don't address anything

about Hercules. It's just a strong guy. Are you

sure it wasn't like a sequel to a previous Hercules

movie where they have a staff? I'm sure it was.

Yeah, it could have been. I'm sure it was. I'm

sure there was a whole series of these films.

This is like picking up Conan the Destroyer without

saying Conan the Barbarian, where it looks like

an original movie, but it's actually a sequel.

The weirdest part of that movie for me was he

saves this man. He saves a black man, right?

And the black man is just like, I will be your

slave. And it was just awkward and weird. And

I didn't like it. That was very tense. Maybe

that's not the best choice there. My favorite

part about that film is I went to my Letterboxd

account. And I obviously log all the movies I

see on there. It basically has a log of every

movie I've ever seen, for the most part, that

I can remember. And so I clicked that I had seen

that. And the other thing that that website does

is it tells you how many other people have seen

that film. I was one of two people that had logged

that film on the website as something I had seen.

And the other person, I think, gave it a half

a star or a one star. That was interesting. I've

never had a movie that I've logged on there that

has been seen by less than like a few thousand

people or whatever. It was two of us. That's

special. You're special for that. Well, until

you log it, then there's going to be three of

us and it's not going to be nearly as special.

I'm jealous that I'm not going to be part of

this club. You can join the club at some point.

It's on Nathan's, what's the name of that box

set? My box set? Of those films? Is it yours

or was it Robbie's? The like 100 action films?

Oh, like the Walmart $5, here's a bunch of them.

Those are great. And the other film that I saw

this week that is actually one that was in the

theater, and I will not spoil it at all, but

I just came back from 300, Rise of an Empire.

I will say that I probably, we sometimes talk

about 3D versus regular versus IMAX versus whatever,

and I'm usually of the opinion that it really

doesn't make that big a difference in how you

see the film. with some exceptions. This is one

I should have seen in 3D, but time -wise it didn't

work out to see it in 3D, so my friend and I

watched it in just the regular format, and it

makes it very obvious in the first 15 to 20 minutes

that you should have seen it in 3D, with a lot

of stuff flying at the screen. Oh God, I hate

it when that happens, when it's obviously made

in 3D. Nothing should obviously be made in 3D,

because then you're just distracted. You're not

watching the actual movie. Luckily, it's not

as prevalent throughout the rest of the film,

but definitely that first half hour, you're like,

I should be watching this in 3D. And then it

kind of went away a little bit. But I know it's

been getting ripped on, and everyone's saying

it's crappy as far as a lot of the reviews have

gone. I actually enjoyed the film. I didn't go

in with, you know... super high expectations

or super low expectations. I just went in to

see a film kind of like 300 film that I remember

from a long time ago, which I probably should

have watched beforehand, but not. It's not necessary

though. I mean, it's not like you forget the

plots or what actually happened. Are there any

recurring characters? Yes. Okay. Well, it's not

a sequel. It is what they I think what they termed

it was a side quill, or a side, I don't know

how, so it's basically, some of it's happening

at the same time as 300, so there's some crossover

in that respect. But yeah, it was good. The main

villain, I guess you could say, Artemisia, played

by Ava Green, who was in Casino Royale, and something

else that she was in. She was freaking ridiculously

badass in this film. She does a lot of fighting

and definitely has some like, I don't know, some

sexual chemistry tension with some characters.

But she's like the naval commander of the Persian

army and she is something to look at. There's

definitely a lot. It gives you what you want

from a 300 film, which is a lot of ridiculous

fighting and blood stuff and death and all kinds

of craziness like that. So if you go in with

just kind of a laid back approach, I think you'll

enjoy this. If you're going in like trying to

compare it to the first one or trying to pick

it apart, I'm sure you could find a bunch of

stuff that you could pick apart. But I don't

know. That's not necessary for me. When you go

see a movie, you can enjoy it for what it is.

Yeah, there's definitely something to like a

movie where you don't want like there's movies

where you can't help but pick apart movies, but

then other movies it's like you could but what's

the point? Just go and have some fun. I thought

it was also a good job by Sullivan Stapleton

who plays the main character Thomas Dockley's

and he's been in some other stuff, but I just

don't remember it. Like he was in Gangster Squad

and some other things. But I've never really

taken notice of him, and I thought he did a pretty

good job as the main hero in this film. So it

was cool. I thought it was enjoyable. I would

just recommend that if you go see it, probably

go see it in 3D. All right. You guys both saw

the first 300, right? Yeah, totally. What did

you guys think of the original film? Well, I

thought that the whole, at first, the punching

and the stabbing. At first that was really cool.

Like with the punching and the stabbing. Anytime

anything was moving, did that happen in this

one? At times. Who directed this? It was directed

by Noah Murrow. Wasn't the other one Zack Snyder?

He's the writer of the other one, I thought.

No. Yeah, he was the writer and producer of this

one. He wrote and directed the first one, he

wrote and produced this one. Oh, okay. Okay.

Anyway, so and it is it is based on the as yet

unreleased Frank Miller graphic novel called

Xerxes. They haven't even released it. It's Based

on these thing. I Don't that says as yet unreleased

graphic not thinking of timing releases I Think

they botched that one Probably should have done

that a little different. Yeah Yeah, listen as

unpublished right now so Yeah, I mean it's That's

interesting. But yeah, I thought it definitely

had a lot of the feel of the first one. If you

were bringing that up, it does have the slow

fast stuff and a lot of death scenes and stabbings

that were slowed down or shown where the blood's

coming out, et cetera. Which usually I'm not

big on that, but I don't mind it as much in the

way they do it, I guess. Because it's, to me,

so unrealistic, I guess, in a way that it's easier

to separate it. Yeah, and not be grossed out.

I guess did you like the original? I I loved

it, but having heard yours I was very I was very

hesitant about the new one and having heard what

you said I want to see the new one now. They

hope it's good Like I get like I could I could

probably go back and rewatch it and find every

little part that people are ripping it apart

for but Like Nathan said that you can do it without

doing that and just view it for what it is and

have fun with it. Yeah, so Kind of the same way

with the first movie I I'll watch it. It's a

fun movie. I mean It might be a little too angry

for me. I don't like angry people. I think that's

one thing Yeah, there's a lot of a lot about

vengeance and and you know trying I mean obviously

the main characters is Defending Greece and whatnot,

but there's a lot of there's a lot of sub vengeance

plots I guess going throughout this on multiple

angles. So there is that As far as coming attractions

go, some stuff to be looking for in the following

week here that's about to be Blu -ray releases.

There's a whole lot of Blu -ray releases coming

out on Tuesday, whether it be at your local store

or online. Some films that we've talked about

in previous MWR Weekly episodes, The Book Thief,

which I highly recommend to people is coming

out on Blu -ray. uh... some of the other ones

that we've talked about uh... inside lewin davis

uh... dan was huge on that uh... good film that's

coming out on tuesday out of the furnace uh...

is also coming out and uh... here's a great one

the hungover games what what is that i don't

know there's one on the list called the hungover

tonight i clicked on it right before he said

it out like what is that and i think from the

looks of it it's uh... the hangover and uh...

the hunger games done like uh... General vague

title movie. Oh No, yeah. Oh, they're doing another

one of those Yeah, that is still a thing like

I clicked on it and on the cover it has it's

got a Zach Galifianakis looking guy who actually

might be Zach Galifianakis He looks so well.

It's got a fake version of Ted. It's got a girl

with a bow and then in the back I see the Johnny

Depp Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because

that's still relevant Interesting. There's also

an extended edition of Cowboys and Aliens coming

out, apparently, for people that liked that film,

and Easy Money Hard to Kill as well. So there's

a whole lot of stuff coming. You're skipping

over the best one. Which one? Iron Sky Director's

Cut. Iron Sky Director's Cut, the comedy sci

-fi film, apparently, is also coming out on Tuesday.

Nazis on the moon! It's different than Nazis

on the Earth. And as far as theater releases

goes for this next coming week, as I said, Need

for Speed comes out Thursday night as well as

another Tyler Perry film, The Single Moms Club.

And then on Friday, you have a limited release

of Bad Words, the comedy there. Other than that,

I don't believe there was anything else except

for, I guess, a limited release of Veronica Mars

that has been getting some headlines. Nothing

else on that list is anything that we've talked

about before. Are you guys interested in anything

that's coming out on DVD or in theaters this

week? I didn't know there was in The Name of

the King 3, which is funny because we watched

in The Name of the King 1 at crappy movie night.

It's like the Dungeon Siege movie, the Z -Pop

video game, but I don't think this one doesn't

even mention Dungeon Siege on the cover. I didn't

know that there was anything to sequel twice.

There's never a need for reasoning of sequels.

They just do them. What's a himizu? I'm looking

up himizu right now. Himizu? Himizu. I don't

know how to say that. Oh, gosh. The film being

released in New York this weekend. I will not

be seeing Need for Speed, so I will bow out of

that one. I don't know if I'll see Bad Words

or not. I can't decide if that looks funny or

looks stupid. So yeah, it's not like a huge week

as far as films go. I'm hoping that Grand Budapest

Hotel gets a little bit more wide release here

in the next week or two, because I do want to

see that Wes Anderson film that I'm definitely

interested in. But other than that, there's not

a whole lot coming out this week to be super

excited about. Yeah, I mean, like me being a

pretty casual movie watcher, none of these look

interesting, really. Yeah, so save your money

because there's more stuff coming out in the

weeks to come that are much more interesting.

As far as the credit conversation that we usually

do, last week we had an episode that we talked

all about the Oscars and we did get a little

bit of feedback on the website. So I just wanted

to real quick mention a few of those commenters

and visitors. And let's start with, oh, let's

see, Jeremy. He had a bunch of comments and one

thing that we talked about a little bit on the

episode about the Oscars was if Ellen is a decent

host or who should be a host, etc. A lot of people

had mentioned stuff about Jim Carrey being a

future host. That's what caused Dan to make his

ill -advised statements that Jim Carrey's Ace

Ventura movies are not funny. That's just wrong

on multiple levels. There was a few people that

joined us in our talk about how it was weird,

how they did all the different hero montages

and it wasn't really clear what they were doing

with that. Another question that we asked last

week along with the Oscars for those people that

aren't Oscar fans is we asked for people's favorite

Harold Ramis film and that actually got the most

feedback and there was a lot of films that were

brought up, mostly Ghostbusters was brought up.

Stripes was brought up by a few people, Animal

House, Caddyshack, seeing if there's anything

else that people brought up as far as their favorite

Harold Ramis films. Ghostbusters are over and

over again by a lot of people. Those are some

of the films that were brought up by them and

if you want to see some of the other conversation

that was going on, just go to geekcastradio .com

and find the last episode of MY Weekly and you

can join in on the discussion and you can reply

to Dan and try to get him to explain himself

about Jim Carrey because that's just wrong. As

far as a question for today, I didn't really

have too much going as far as the 300. There's

not a lot of questions I wanted to ask about

that, but I was going to ask, going back to our

news stories, if people were interested in a

West Side Story remake and if they are interested

in Steven Spielberg taking on a musical for the

first time and if they think that he can pull

that off. So feel free to give us your opinion

on Steven Spielberg's possible involvement with

a West Side Story remake. And we'll comment on

your comments next week. As far as you guys,

usually at this point of the show we give people

a chance to interact with us, not just on the

website, but personally too. So how can people

interact with you, Nathan? Do you have a Twitter

or anything else, or a website, or how can people

get in touch with you? I mean, I'm not one for

social media. Dang, I don't even... I'll set

up a Twitter. We'll give you a way to get a hold

of Nate next week. Yeah, and actually I have

a question that if they want to answer this on

the website. Perfect. What's your favorite bad

movie? Since we're talking about bad movies.

Talking a lot about crappy movies. Yeah. What

movie do you love to hate so much? What movie

is so bad that you love it? Yeah. I imagine there's

going to be a lot of brooms. That was what brought

the whole bad idea thing to the mainstream, I

think. I have a Twitter, I just found out. You

can see me at at Crocker Comics. C -R -O -C -K

-E -R C -O -M -I -C -S at Crocker Comics. And

I have... I'm following four people and I have

five followers, apparently. I don't know where

these people came from, but I have them. And

you're about to have more. Matt, do you have

any Twitter or anything else? I do not. My Facebook

is even set to private. That's not me. My girlfriend

did that six years ago and I just haven't changed

it back because I'm not a social media guy. Now

that I'm actually doing something, I will set

up a Twitter that I will give away before the

next... I'm sorry. I tried to spread it out now,

but the name I wanted was taken. Well, we will

give you ways that you can interact with them

individually if you want to interact with us.

In the show in general, there are several ways

to do that. You can call the voicemail line 502

-526 -5821. You can email us. The address would

be feedback at GeekCastRadio .com. You can visit

the forums and the episode posts at GeekCastRadio

.com. We have a Facebook page. The Twitter there

is at GeekCastRadio. My Twitter would be at Optimus

Solo. and you can also go to iTunes and leave

us feedback in the iTunes location. I don't know,

we haven't checked in the last couple weeks,

so I will check that before next week and we'll

talk about any feedback that we've gotten on

iTunes. Anything else you guys want to say before

we close out the show, Nate? How was your first

experience? I was just about to say, keep on

wizarding! Keep on! Oh, I am a fan of podcasts.

I am too. No. I don't know. I got nothing. I

hope we didn't either bore or turn off a bunch

of people. For those people that are used to

Dan and I and the format we've had, hopefully

you're sticking with us. That's why you can leave

feedback. Tell us what you like, what you didn't

like. We'll adjust that as we go and there could

be some crazy other things down the pipeline

for the three of us as we get used to this podcasting

thing. And the bonus is that we all live in close

proximity so we can do some stuff that normally

we wouldn't be able to do here on the GeekCast

Radio network. Matt, how was your first podcasting

experience with us? I really enjoyed it and I'd

love to do it again anytime you want me. You'll

probably be seeing and hearing, well not seeing,

but you'll be hearing more of both of these guys

very soon. So that is it for us for this week

and remember for all things movies, keep tuned

to M1R Weekly.
