CINEMA GEEKS
Nazis at the Center of the Earth Review

About this Episode
Today on MWIRE, we'll be discussing X -Men Apocalypse,
the original old boy, some Nazis, and a little
Twilight Smackdown. So stay tuned for MWIRE Weekly.
All right, welcome to another MWire Weekly and
with me once again this week filling in are Nathan,
hello. Hello. And Matt, hello. Good afternoon,
sir. Is it afternoon? It is. There are 12 hours
that are afternoon. I'm OK with it. All right.
Wait, never mind. I was going to say there's
like 23 hours. I don't know, technically it's
afternoon. Whatever. But as you guys know, Nathan
and Matt were both with me last week. They're
with me again, and they'll be with us for the
foreseeable future. And we enjoyed our record
last week, so we look forward to be doing it
again here. And we'll get to your feedback later
on. But we are working to make things better
and as good as we can, audio quality and all
that jazz. So Nathan, how have you been in the
last week? I've been pretty good. I don't know.
I updated my Twitter account, so that's awesome.
Yeah, you guys got updated Twitter stuff to talk
about later. Oh, yeah. And somehow Nathan has
seen more movies than any of us, I think, this
week. Oh my gosh, I'm the man. So we will get
more into that later, but as you guys know, we
usually start off with a little box office talk,
and it was an interesting weekend at the box
office looking at the new stuff that was out
there going against some old stuff, and I...
gotta say this is one of the most shocking weekends
of 2014 so far at the box office because if you
remember last week we had 300 rise of an empire
that was in first place pretty easily there and
then we had the need for speed movie coming out
this week we had other perry film which always
seems to do somewhat well we had non -stop out
there but the movie that takes the first place
spot this weekend is actually mr. pewodian sherman
which I don't think many people would have predicted.
I think most people would have either said 300
stayed there or Need for Speed took it. But somehow
Mr. Peabody and Sherman creeped up and then got
a little bit of money, which probably makes the
people at, I think that's a DreamWorks film.
Yeah, that's true. Somewhat happy because they've
been tanking with a lot of their films and Mr.
Peabody and Sherman still has a long way to go.
It's only a third of the way to its budget, or
not even a third of the way to its budget. Almost
I almost to the halfway point So it's it's doing
okay, but not as good as they were probably hoping
Were you guys surprised that 300 or need for
speed isn't number one? Yeah, totally like especially
because people I needed less than 300 last week,
right? Yeah That's weird Could it be that people
just don't care anymore about like? Crazy action
movies that are kind of boring. I don't know.
No, I don't I don't think that's ever gonna happen
I hope that doesn't happen. You know what's interesting?
I'm looking at the IMDB page for the Mr. Buddy,
Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and the first name that
I recognize, and this is a DreamWorks picture,
so normally it's like the first stars, like someone
you know, but the first guy is Stephen Colbert
and he's like 15 people down. Yeah. I like that
idea, though. I'd much rather have new guys coming
in, right? Yeah, definitely. It's definitely
not your typical DreamWorks film. Like the Croods,
it was like Nicolas Cage and then 500 other people.
Or like, yeah, Madagascar has all the big names
or Ice Age and stuff like that. So yeah, it's
a little bit of a different feel for DreamWorks,
but it's just weird for the second week for it
to come out. And I guess the need for speed slash
whatever, can I lump them in with the Fast and
Furious fans? They've got to be a little disappointed
that Need for Speed didn't even crack the first
or the second spot because our top five are Mr.
Peabody and Sherman followed by 300 again, then
Need for Speed, then Liam Neeson sticking in
at number four, and then Tyler Perry at five.
So Need for Speed not even in the top two. Just
missing out on the top spot, but missing out
on the top two films that have already been out
for a couple weeks. So I don't know what that
says for Need for Speed. and if it can compete
with the same type of stuff that Fast and Furious
does or what, but I'm sure Mike's upset that
Need for Speed didn't take the top spot. Have
you talked to Mike at all about it? No, thankfully.
Just kidding, Mike. Some weird things happening
this week also because usually... You don't see
a couple of things that we saw here, and that
is some random spikes as far as increases in
their gross. The nut job, which has been out
for nine weeks, just had almost a 50 % rise in
their money there. I know it's only a half a
million dollars, but still that's an odd spike
in the ninth week, especially when you have stuff
like Mr. Peabody and Sherman, the Lego movie,
Frozen, all still out there competing for that
same demographic. So that was kind of a weird
spike for Nutjob. Hunger Games had a pretty hefty
spike. Jack Ryan had a weird spike. So it's kind
of weird to see some of those randomly having
that increase there. Everything else is on the
decline except for Grand Budapest Hotel, which
is trickling into more and more theaters. So
now it's in the 66 theaters. So obviously that's
going to have an increase from when it was only
in four theaters. When that movie comes out Kevin,
I want to see it in theaters. Yes, I do too If
it would make it to theaters near us We would
all be seeing it and for those of you that don't
know I kind of mentioned it last week But Nate
Matt and I all live basically in the same vicinity
of each other So we're able to go to movies together
and talk about it. So that'll be fun Pompeii
had had a big drop 63 % drop in Pompeii in its
fourth week. So that is a Epic fail as far as
box office goes. Big flop. And that was already
tanking before. Yeah, now it's even more tanking.
100 million budget and it's at 22. So it's not
even a fourth of the way to its budget. Ouch.
Yeah, there wasn't any other huge drops. That
was the biggest drop as far as the top people
go. Veronica Mars just debuted in 291 theaters.
That came in 11th this week. Not really a huge
surprise. It only had a $6 million budget, so
I guess it didn't really have to do much to get
there. I don't know if that number's accurate
or not, but maybe it didn't cost much to make
that movie, I guess. Anything that you guys saw
that you wanted to talk about as far as Box Office
goes? Anything that surprises you, or what do
you guys think as far as next week? I'm kind
of going a little bit ahead, but we have the
Muppets movie, and we have Divergent. Probably
the two biggest ones coming out next week. Do
you think one of those will take the number one
spot? Or do you think Need for Speed 300 or Mr.
Peabody holds on to it? Nate? No comment. Dude,
I don't know. I really hope the Muppets one takes
first, because I think the trailers for that
look amazing. As we mentioned earlier, Nate,
now the podcast is you and I talked earlier.
I haven't seen any of the Muppets movies to my
memory, so I'm really interested. I'm going to
fix soon. Yeah, totally. Oh, by the way, I went
to the used video store and none of them were
there. That's upsetting. I do think that the
Divergent has an outside shot just because it's
got a lot of marketing behind it. I know it's
somewhat playing towards that younger audience,
so sometimes they will latch on to stuff like
that and go crazy. Maybe it doesn't, though,
because there's been a lot of flops in that same
kind of genre space. So we'll see if Divergent
can come out there, or if Muppets, I would think
one of them would get the number one spot, though,
over a not too competitive field there. So we
will have to see, and if we keep you guys updated
with Dan and I's predictions as far as what we'll...
be reigning supreme at the end of the year. An
updated year so far, Lego Movie still far in
a way is in the number one spot, beating all
its competitors by over a hundred million. Then
Ride Along, then 300 Rides of an Empire, then
The Monuments Men, and then non -stop rounds
out your top five for the year so far. So getting
into some of the news for the week. Some interesting
stuff here and starting with some headlines and
let's start with comic book stuff because That
is what we do here at the Geekcast Radio Network.
Start with X -Men news. This is an article that
was coming from the director, Brian Singer, and
some stuff that he did over at TotalFilm via
Joblo .com, revealing a little bit about the
feel for X -Men Apocalypse, and more specifically,
what time period it will be set in. And basically,
it's saying that it'll take place in the 80s.
Nate, how do you feel about X -Men Oclips taking
place in the 80s and apparently, according to
this article, being just all kinds of destruction
and craziness? The 80s thing is weird. Is it
in the same continuity as the earlier X -Men
movies? First class and on, I think. Oh right,
didn't first class like completely change the
continuity? Yeah, entirely. They threw out all
the old movies and new continuity starting in
the C's. Cool. And now they're somehow combining
them though with Days of Future present, at least
the character. Oh, yeah. Days of Future, isn't
it Days of Future Past? Yes. Yes. Based on the,
well, named after the Days of Future Past X -Men
story. But yeah. Then it wraps into the timeline
that Wolverine from last year is tied into that
same continuity. Yeah. They're going to have
to stop doing, eventually stop doing Wolverine.
He Jackman is Wolverine because they keep going
back and it's like, he's going forward in age
and they're like, well, just get all new actors
for everyone that's not He Jackman's part. I
mean, I get it. He's a great Wolverine and he
totally plays the part perfectly, but he will
not be able to do it for forever. Because Wolverine
doesn't age, and he clearly does. Does anyone
know what Steve Blum looks like? I'm going to
look that up right now. That is irrelevant. What
about just the general idea that it's just going
to be this mass destruction, chaos, and carnage,
and all kinds of more to a higher level of any
of the other X -Men movies, according to this
article? I've read a lot of the Age of Apocalypse
comics, which I imagine is where this is going
to draw heavily from. um and but and you know
they they the article i read was like and it's
gonna have a new villain it's like well it's
gotta be apocalypse right they're not gonna have
like someone else being in the apocalypse movie
um but i i that that lines of mass destruction
just makes me worried that it's gonna be a michael
bay x -men movie like it's gonna be transformers
meets wolverine I've got and also the trailers
for this most recent one did not enthuse me at
all as a comic book guy So I'm not I don't have
high hopes, but I'll see it if someone wants
to give see it I will definitely be seeing it
Nate. Are you still looking up Steve loom? No,
no, I did. I was just gonna say Like he does
he does the perfect voice of Wolverine So he
should just buff up and grow some mutton chops
and then be Wolverine. I Think he could do it
That would be amazing, just to see how that would
work. Yeah, dude, he's got mud and chops in this
picture I'm looking at right now. He looks fine.
Nate, Matt was saying that he's not super thrilled
about the End Days of Future Past coming out
as far as what he's seen from it. What about
you? No, I heard him. Agree? No, it looks good.
I want to see it. I don't even care. I honestly
want to see it. Matt doesn't know what he's talking
about. Well, I'm sure all the listeners will
give their feedback on to both their impression
and their excitement for both Days of Future
Past and Apocalypse and what has come out about
that. So on a sad note, we do have a new story
here about the man behind the moot trailers,
Hal Douglas, who if you've ever heard the phrase,
in a world, and then it goes on. narrating different
trailers and stuff like that. That's a pretty
famous intro line from him. He passed away at
the age of 89 this past week, so that's sad.
Great voice, and even if you don't know him by
name, you've heard his voice about a thousand
times. So you can go look up Hal Douglas on YouTube
or something and hear some of his work. Going
into an interesting note here that I really don't
care too much about, but I just find it funny.
I do like her as an actress, and we're talking
about Shailene Woodley, which I never know if
I say her name right or not, but we're just gonna
go with it. I've really liked her in her last
couple movies, and I just find it funny that
the stars of Divergent are mouthing off against
the stars in the storyline of Twilight. I love
the subheading too. It's, will Kristen Stewart
fight back? So silly. But I do think it's interesting.
Basically what she said in her story here is
that Twilight is toxic, it's unhealthy, it's
about relationships that aren't good. Bella falls
in love with this guy and the second he leaves
her, her life is over and she's going to kill
herself. What message are we sending to young
people? I don't know, I just find it interesting
that someone's making commentary on Twilight
in general. I feel there's a lot of commentary
to make on Twilight. Yeah, but I'm just saying
it's interesting to see it coming from someone
of that age group at least, not just us older
people being like, oh, you silly little teenagers.
It's actually someone in that demographic that's
supposed to like it that's saying that's really
not that good, besides the fact that the writing
sucked in that film. Yeah, definitely. Like,
I read the book, I saw the movie, and I agree
with all of her comments, although I think they're
a little late, aren't they? I mean, all these
movies are on DVD now. You're not gonna stop
someone who is, you know, on fence. I don't know
if it's like an attempt to separate what she's
doing with Divergent, which is about to hit theaters,
from Twilight, and if she's worried that too
many people are just gonna lump all these, you
know, all the, whatever, science fiction, fantasy,
you know, young Adult novel slash movies together
and she's like, wait a second. We're different.
We're not Twilight I don't know if this is like
what her purpose is That's the only thing to
me that can explain the timing of that Then maybe
she should have talked about like hunger games
and just game and things that are similar. They
look closer Yeah, and a little bit more relevant.
Yeah, it's old by this point So, I don't know.
We'll have to see how Divergent does. I definitely
like her better than Kristen Stewart. That's
for sure But that's a different story. Alright,
getting into some sequel and remake talk. We
always do that, seemingly, because there's always
talk in Hollywood about making stuff again, or
redoing stuff, or doing it beforehand, or what
came after, or sidequills even. What did I see
that was just a sidequill? Oh, 300. Yeah, 300.
Oh yeah. But anyways, there's an interesting
batch of... sequel talk here, and we're gonna
start with Jason Sudeikis' rumor. Stepping in
for a checking case in a long delayed film entitled
Fletch One? Fletch One? Fletch One, W -O -N,
like he won. Oh, he won! He did it! Apparently
it will be an origin story of the Fletch character
that Chevy Chase played back in 1985 and then
the sequel Fletch Lives in 1989. So we had Fletch,
Fletch Lives, and now Fletch 1. You know, I think
it's a good choice to not go with Chevy Chase
on the sequel. Could you ever go wrong with Chevy
Chase? And you know, Stallone did it in... Whatever
Stallone movie or whatever it was a prequel wasn't
it? I don't know I Just assumed it was I don't
know I think everybody assumes things about Stallone
movies at this point because nobody actually
watches them Seriously, but I don't know doing
I guess Chevy Chase couldn't be in this one.
So we're going with Jason Sudeikis who I mean,
he's a funny guy, I guess I have no idea who
you're talking about right now. He was in the
Muppet movie? No, no, I'm kidding. I looked at
it. Oh, OK. We were the Millers most recently,
but I guess I never saw or contemplated the fact
that there could be another Fletch movie. I've
never heard of Fletch until today. Yeah. Well,
no, I've heard of it because I've seen it at
Target, like the DVD. But that's all I know.
I've never seen the movie. Does that mean we
have to add another film to my coffee table?
I guess so. Do you like it? Is it good? I mean,
I don't know if I've ever seen Fletch Lives.
I saw Fletch. I don't know. I'm not a super huge
Chevy Chase fan. Generally, sequels to comedies
don't really work out too well. Except for Police
Academy. Bobcat Gold's way to the second one,
right? I'm not saying like the 16th one or whatever
it was that they eventually got to was necessary,
but like I like the first couple. I like Chevy
Chase personally, like I think he's good, so
I would watch it if I were invited to that party.
I liked him in some stuff. I don't even know
the last movie he did. I can't think of a movie
in the last. five or ten years that he's done,
but maybe I've been living under him. He's been
doing community for years now. Yeah. Yeah. And
that's awesome. I love community. We should talk
about Big Bang Theory. I'm just kidding. Oh,
I'm sorry. No, I just wanted to try to get Mike
and Dan riled up again and see if they could
continue their arguments. Oh, yeah. I guess this
isn't really a sequel, but I guess it falls under
maybe the remake reboot section. Apparently,
we should start preparing ourselves for Pretty
Woman the musical on Broadway. We're talking
about Julia Roberts and Pretty Woman. Apparently,
they're going to turn that film into a Broadway
play slash musical. Is Julia Roberts going to
be in it? No. I don't think she's singing. She
too is too old for that part. I think they're
going to try to get Anne Hathaway. No, I'm just
kidding. Really? No, I'm just kidding. I would
watch that. I'm just trying to think of a big
name star that can sing. But yeah, that's interesting.
I didn't know there was a call or a desire amongst...
Broadway going people for a pretty woman Interpretation,
but whatever more power to him. I guess I feel
like they just It's too many sequels and junk
Speaking of too many sequels the sequel the sequels
and remake section of your podcast Kevin I can
do without Let's talk about taken yes, let's
talk about taken See, with a name like Taken,
I feel like they do better than just put a number
next to it. Like, we could say, like, Taken again,
or... No. I don't know. There are other words
that could be... No. I like the standard numbering.
It's way better, especially, like, after the
whole Rambo fiasco. Yeah, as bad as some of the
die -hard remakes were, I at least like that
they did stuff like that. What did they say?
Like, live for your die -hard? Die -hard with
a vengeance? I don't know. Die -hard with electric
blue? Yeah, so Taken 3, if you guys didn't know,
that's happening. And the news article that hit
this week was about Famke Jansen, Liam Neeson's
wife in the film, is set to reprise her role,
as well as Liam Neeson, as well as Maggie Grace.
So the husband, wife, and daughter are all on
board for taking three. But get this, and this
is the most bizarre part of this story here.
Liam Neeson, this is a quote from him. He says,
they called me up and I said, I'll do it. But
only as long as nobody gets taken. No! What?
I like it. I like it. That was just speculation,
so now there's going to be a taken three, which
apparently is not going to have anybody taken
anywhere. It's just Liam Neeson. Why not? It's
like being like, I'll do Star Trek, no spaceships.
But a camp got an outer space. That's Liam Neeson
going, I'll do it, but you have to be more creative.
That's no, I think that's him just saying like
I'll do it cuz it's gonna make me money But I'm
gonna make sure you can't do anything that you
wanted to do with it. Like I I don't know I don't
think anyone's gonna care like if someone was
gonna go see you taking three They're just gonna
go see it. They don't care what it's about. All
right fine I mean, what else could you do? He
was taken then his family was taken There's no
one left to take wait. He was taken. He was taken
in the second one I've never seen any of them.
I thought it was taken in the first one Yeah,
yeah, he was taken in the second one. I believe
I don't remember the plot at all. There's nothing
left Yeah, so I mean they could take the bet
he could take somebody maybe he could turn into
the guy and take somebody I don't know um so
yeah taking three is happening get ready for
it It'll make some money and Liam Neeson will
continue being a 50 or 60 year old badass. Yeah
I'm all for that. Alright, into some casting
rumors. There is some big casting rumors that
apply to what we always talk about, which is
comic book stuff and Star Trek slash Star Wars
stuff. So we will start with Star Wars, and there
is rumors aplenty like there is every week about
more people possibly being linked to the next
Star Wars film. And apparently they have about
three or four young actors that they are narrowed
down as far as leading man candidates. Now, granted,
like we say always with J .J. Abrams stuff, he
is a master at throwing out false information.
So everything we could have ever reported on
Star Wars, remember, can quite possibly all be
false. Because that's what he does, because he
likes to keep people guessing. And that way when
you get to the actual film, you don't have a
clue what's going on. But, the four people that
are being linked to a lead role here, we have
Jesse Plemons, John Boyega, I'm probably saying
everybody that's wrong, Matthew James Thomas,
Ed Spielers, and Ray Fisher. Do you guys watch
any of these shows that they're from? The shows
that they're known for, Downtown Abbey, Attack
the Block, Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad,
and some, looks like some Broadway stuff. But
are either of you guys familiar with any of these
characters? I'm going to preempt the comments,
and it's Donton Abbey. That's not downtown. And
I know that the fans are really bothered by that.
I've not watched any of them, personally. I mean,
I've heard good things about Donton Abbey, though.
Yeah. I'm not familiar with any of these actors,
but I guess to me that's good. Because I don't
want them just... To do the thing where they're
like, oh, let's just throw some big name in here
and then people come see it like that's kind
of classic Star Wars stuff to kind of Yeah, it'll
be like a DreamWorks Star Wars DreamWorks like
the Peabody or DreamWorks like their everything
else Like like Madagascar version of Star Wars.
We don't want that, right? I don't know I might
want it. I don't want it. Can you imagine Ben
Stiller being in Star Wars? No, I'm going to
kill myself Like that that better that bothers
just that idea upsets me like Star Wars is my
thing Like I know it more than I know anything
even comic books and that would bother me to
a whole new level Well, just like one of the
things that Star Wars kind of became famous for
at one point was the fact that the original films
don't really take any humongous names. Yeah,
they have some established actors. Harrison Ford.
But even Harrison Ford was relatively unknown
at that time. You had a lot of no names, quote
unquote, actors, and so it's kind of nice to
see, not that these guys are no names, but they're
not like your big Hollywood blockbuster. budget
stars like even the prequels did that a little
bit with bringing in Samuel L Jackson and and
Liam Neeson and attaching some big names to it
Which I'm not saying all those were bad choices,
but I kind of like the fact that I haven't heard
of a lot of these guys But I don't watch a lot
of TV so But we'll see as they narrow it down
as they bring out more rumors. What kind of role
they're even in People have rumored that it might
be offspring to some of the known characters
from the original trilogy, but we'll have to
wait and see. As far as comic book rumors, as
far as casting goes, a couple things here. There's
supposedly four actors in the running for Fantastic
Four's villain, Doctor Doom, and the names coming
up there are... Redman, Reilly, Kevill, or Gleason?
So Eddie Redman, Sam Reilly, Toby Kevill, or
Dom Hall, Gleason? And I guess that just fits
in with what we were talking about Star Wars
because I don't know who any of these people
are. When you said Redman, I thought you meant
Redman from the Wu -Tang? Yeah. Score by the
RZA? Yeah. It's gonna be the villain and then
obviously if you guys haven't heard the new cast
for Fantastic Four's includes Miles Teller, Kate
Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell, so it's
definitely a younger Fantastic Four. What do
you guys think of just in general Dr. Doom being
the villain in this reboot of Fantastic Four,
or do we even need a Fantastic Four reboot? Yes,
we do. Well, yeah, I mean... okay so if it hasn't
pulled back it is my favorite couple character
and that i might have worked out what's in my
second these things like in so i'm you know bite
my nails over some of these casting but i mean
reid richardson this movie is is twenty six which
is really young uh... it's so like uh... actors
that they're they're thrown out here for doctor
do more all in their thirties Yeah, they're all
young 30s guys from the UK. Someone suggested,
like, maybe getting someone like Joaquin Phoenix,
who I think looks the part a lot more than some
of these other guys. He's got a nice, strong
jaw. I don't know how well he could play the
part. But, like, all of the casting in this movie
looks really weird. Like, the Brother and Sister
being different race, the really young Reed Richards
who's supposed to be the... Well, I mean, he's
supposed to be a World War II... Like, him and
Ben Grimm were in World War II. I know they really
can't do that anymore, because you can't have
80 -year -old Fantastic Four members on a reboot
of anything. But I mean, I guess they could have
done it, because they did this 1960s X -Men movie.
So I'm very upset about these things. I think
we needed a reboot after those last two, but
I don't know if this is the one for me. Yeah,
so it's definitely some weird casting so far,
and maybe they'll be able to pull it off and
look like geniuses, but... I don't know, it just
doesn't seem to be adding up at this point for
me. Nate, you're not a big Fantastic Four fan?
No, I am. The original ones from the early 2000s
weren't that great, and I would just like to
see them do a good one. I just hope that they
stay away from the gritty reboots. They don't
try to make it like Batman, because the Fantastic
Four should not look like Batman. Yeah. And people
that try to look like Batman so far have been
coming up not so good. I think if any Fantastic
Four villain, you could do a Doom as a grimdark
story. But yeah, I would definitely be cautious.
If you made just a Doom movie, that would be
awesome. All my money. All of my money. And staying
with more comic book casting rumors, this was
not as specific because there's not necessarily
a link to a film yet, but Terry Crews recently
spoke up about the possibility of him playing
a Luke Cage character in a Marvel film. and it's
saying that it's possibly because there was rumors
here that Marvel is going a little bit further
here that you know they have the movies going
out and now they're doing some Netflix shows
they're going to tie into stuff and apparently
one of them is going to be a Luke Cage series
so now the rumors are starting to fly about who
could be in it and he was saying that you know
people like Idris Elba were being thrown around
Michael J. White his name and at first he was
like kind of throwing off the rumors and saying
that you know nothing nothing's nothing to do
here but that's because the movie hadn't or the
show hadn't even been greenlit yet but he's saying
that that he'd definitely be interested regardless
of his age he said he thinks he could play the
character what do you guys think of a potential
Luke Cage series and who do you think is good
for that character if anybody Nate Like Terry
Crews as Luke Cage, but I don't know if you could
really play the part that well I don't know enough
about Luke Cage is the problem but he definitely
looks the part and I mean other than as long
as he's not acting like he does in his in his
Old Spice commercials, I think he'll he could
do it do it fine I am absolutely down. I searched
up all those guys and looked at them, and I thought
he looks the most the part of all the other guys
in the running. And I don't know, like, I think
Luke Cage does a lot of yelling, like the guy
in the old Spice commercials. I've read some
old Power Man stuff, as well as some newer, like,
Ryman and his stuff with Luke Cage in it, and
I think he's a great character, and I'm super
looking forward to this. a lot more than the
Fantastic Four stuff, which is way more what
I'm used to. Although this isn't even set in
stone at all. I know. It's just, he might? Yeah,
this is a very, very... the definition of just
rumoring. Not hearsay, but I think he looks the
part. The internet will do that, though. They'll
just be like, this guy looks a hell of a lot
like this character. He should play it. And there's
like no screenplay, no studio, no... And then
Nathan Fillion gets cast in everything for some
reason. Nothing wrong with that, he's amazing.
He is, but I'm just saying. You guys weren't
obviously as part of the show when we first broke
some or first started talking about some rumors
about the live -action Pan, Peter Pan story.
Directed by Joe Wright, but we had talked about
some cast news when Hugh Jackman got got linked
to it and there's also Garrett Headland who have
been been linked to it and it's weird because
There's gonna be a young Captain Hook, but then
there's gonna be a pirate called Blackbeard And
Captain Hook's not bad No, it's like an origin
story. It's like how Magneto wasn't bad. Right.
So you're going to have a young Captain Hook
who's not bad yet, and you're going to actually
have a villain in the pirate Blackbeard who is
going to be Hugh Jackman. I think he got that
flipped. What's that? I thought Hugh Jackman
was going to play Hook. I don't think so. No,
I think he's playing Blackbeard, because Garrett
Hedlund is much younger than Hugh Jackman. Oh,
OK, I got it. I read the article. And it's hitting
news again this week, because now they have someone
linked to Tiger Lily, which would be Rooney Mara.
It's interesting. The title of the article is
saying Rooney Mara is playing Tiger Lily, and
the internet is not OK with that. I don't know
what the... what the uproar is about that. I
think it's because, from what I understood, she's
not Native American enough. Yeah, I think someone
tied closely to it said that they were going
to make the cast a lot more diverse. And if you
look back at other people you mentioned, they're
all not very diverse. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And for
those of you who don't know who Runimar is, she's
from the girl with the dragon tattoo. And I don't
know I'm not familiar with her big, you know
that much but I don't see a problem with her
being tiger Lily I don't see why it would have
to be this race or that race as far as a remake
of this film I mean we got Captain Hook being
young and not bad yet and I don't know Yeah,
I don't know if I I'm interested at all in a
Peter Pan film again. Oh wow, really? I don't
know I hadn't heard of this until I read the
article today, and I was like, wow, I like these
ideas. I like the idea of Captain Hook, Peter
Pan, buddy film that turns wrong at the end.
Yeah, I do like that, and I think if they do
it in more of a modern style and with today's
things made... I guess my problem with the Peter
Pan franchise, I guess, if you want to call it,
even though they're not all from the same companies,
et cetera, but it's always been too... light
and childish for me and maybe this one will take
it in a completely different direction I mean
I'm not saying I have anything against Robin
Williams or hook or stuff like that but it's
it's just kind of like I think it's supposed
to be chat it's like a whole world of children
yeah exactly I'm not saying I didn't like hook.
I just at this point I don't need to see another
version of that So I guess if they go completely
different direction, maybe I'll be on board for
it. What do you think mate? I would watch anything
About Peter Pan I will I mean except for maybe
like the the vague genre movies, but um No, definitely.
Um anything with pirates in it like anything
like magic Fantasy, yeah, I'll watch it. All
right. Fair enough. Then we can get into a little
bit of the trailer talk. Some trailers that were
released this week included stuff from The Normal
Heart, Perfect Sisters, Devil's Knot, Tapped
Out, Under the Skin, a new trailer for Grand
Budapest Hotel, even though it's actually out
in theaters, a movie called Hateship Loveship,
The Quiet Ones, Cuban Fury, a new thing from
Sabotage, and Get On Up. Hey, Kevin. Yeah? Guess
which one I want to talk about the most. Grand
Budapest Hotel? Uh, second most. Um, Get On Up?
Yeah! Dude, I don't even care. James Brown's
amazing. Yeah, for those that don't know, Get
On Up is basically a story about James Brown
featuring the guy that played Jackie Robinson,
I believe. So he got to play Jackie Robinson
last year and he gets to play James Brown this
year. I don't think that's really fair. I think
that's awesome. I think he has a great life.
But yeah, that movie looks interesting. It's
got an interesting cast, actually. Dan Aykroyd.
Yeah, it's not just Dan Aykroyd. I guess I thought
it would maybe be like your typical. We've had
a lot of biopics about musicians in the last,
what, like 10 years. We've had the Johnny Cash
one with Walk the Line. We had Kevin Spacey play
Bobby Darin. I might be getting the wrong musician,
but we've had quite a few of them and they've
all had a certain tone. I don't know if this
one's going to be as serious or if it's going
to be a little bit more comedic or what we're
going to do here, but Dan Ayakroyd, Craig Robinson
I saw in one of the shots, the comedian Craig
Robinson. Viola Davis who's been super popular
lately, but I don't know that that one to me.
I'm with you that one looked interesting I'll
watch that one. Yeah, what other trailers caught
your guys fancy? If any sabotage Like I don't
know the second that Arnold Schwarzenegger said,
you know when I'm a governor I'm not gonna be
doing any movies only he said it more Arnold
Lee than that. I I was personally upset I grew
up on the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. I can't
wait to see this one. Maybe not in theaters.
It's like Bruce Willis. If he's starring in an
action movie, I'm seeing it. I don't care if
they're 60, 70, and just unloading guns. I'm
going to watch it. Excellent. Yeah, that one
could be fun along the same lines as a lot of
stuff we've gotten recently with like Expendables
and Red and stuff like that. It just looks like
something that you just have fun with. uh...
there's a lot of trees that just didn't have
any desire to yes seriously um... i still don't
have a clue what under the skin is about her
anything is that the one with uh... so yes go
johansson it like mad you see you were saying
something about this one actually i've read uh...
read a blurb on it and the concept sounded like
uh... like uh... species at first turning into
that uh... the alien siding with the humans rather
than fighting the humans against their own people.
I think the concept sounds great. I think the
idea of casting Scarlett Johansson as the perfect
sexual female human or whatever they're trying
to do is probably a good choice. She's gorgeous,
we can all agree on that, right? But we'll have
to see more. The trailer did not enthuse me at
all. Yeah, the trailer is not very... doesn't
give a lot away, doesn't necessarily make you
interested in it, but I'm holding out hope that
that one's going to be something good. I'm not
going to write it off yet. Like I am going to
most of the other films I just mentioned that
had trailers this week. Yeah, I can't believe
how basic a trailer for Tapped Out was. It was
just like, do you like UFC? We made a movie!
Here you go! I would be somewhat... ticked off
if I was, because I do watch a little UFC, but
just like when I used to watch WWF and stuff
like that, I still never watched any of the movies
that were sponsored by them, because I just seemed
to be wrong and they were awful. But the main
villain, I guess, if you want to call it in this,
is a... A ex -UFC fighter, I believe. He may
be still under contract, I'm not sure, but he
never really won anything, so it's funny when
they're doing the things, they're like, this
UFC champion, and this UFC champion, and then
they just say his name. They don't even mention
that he was a UFC fighter. It's kind of like
when there's this huge cast of people, they all
won Oscars, and then they're just like, and David
Duchovny. It's a good company thrown under the
bus this week on him wire weekly Any any other
trailers you guys wanted to mention I? Don't
know I hadn't seen so I know you talked about
Grand Budapest Hotel last week You're very excited
for it. I was like I don't know sounds like a
drama I'm not all that interested. I've watched
the trailer this week, and I'm I'm glad that
I didn't see it earlier because then I would
have been hyped and then like why is it not here
yet, but now I'm all like Why is it not here
yet? Wes Anderson has been on a roll in my book
lately. I'm not necessarily one who just seeks
out directors and watches stuff for a director,
but I'm becoming more and more aware of them.
and what they've done before, and I really liked
Moonrise Kingdom, which was a 2012 release. He
did Fantastic Mr. Fox, the animated film, back
in 2009. He did The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizou,
The Royal Tanabombs, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket.
And I remember seeing Bottle Rocket a long time
ago, and that was phenomenal. So I'm a fan of
his, and I'm interested to see what he does this
time. It looks ridiculously great. I feel really
bad because I... haven't seen I've seen like
half of the Royal Tenenbaums and then none of
the other ones and I know that they're amazing
like I know everyone said like Everyone just
says they're amazing and I just haven't I got
around to seeing them yet. Most people don't
talk about bottle rocket though. That was like
Kind of an unheard of film or kind of flew under
the radar and if you guys haven't seen that we
should watch that because I haven't seen it in
like probably 15 years 10 years, 15 years, whatever.
But I remember really enjoying that. And I'm
not super huge on Little Royal Tenenbaums and
Life Aquatic, even though I still like them and
appreciate them. But I think really with Moonrise
Kingdom, he kind of hooked me in. So yeah, hopefully
that will be coming to theater soon, and we can
talk about that in depth in a future MWIRE weekly
episode. All right, moving on here, we're going
to take a quick second, and we'll be right back
with our main attraction. Mr. Dascombe, what
we need right now is a clear message to the people
of this country. This message must be read in
every newspaper, heard on every radio, seen on
every television. This message must resound throughout
the entire interlink. I want this country to
realize that we stand on the edge of oblivion.
I want every man, woman and child to understand
how close we are to chaos. I want everyone to
remember why they need us. Alright, thanks for
sticking with us, and it is time for the main
attraction. And kind of similar to last week,
we're combining the main attraction with what
we've been watching segments from before that
we used to do at MY Weekly. Doing that again
this week, I know some people are... Asking for
end up discussion on current movies that are
out there We've been kind of taken advantage
of the fact that there hasn't been a lot of huge
movies least in the months of January February
and into March And then also allowing the three
of us to kind of get a feel for each other in
the podcast And get familiar with that so we
will be doing some some modern films as we move
forward as bigger ones get released so Just be
patient, that will be coming. But today we're
going to talk about some movies that we have
seen. But let's first get a real quick insight
from Nathan on his experience, his real quick
experience with a Johnny Knoxville film. Oh,
yeah, okay, so I had to look this up. At work,
I caught 15 minutes of The Ringer with Johnny
Knoxville in it, and this is a movie where Johnny
Knoxville pretends to be mentally handicapped
to win the Special Olympics. For some reason,
I don't know, I saw the 15 minutes out of context,
and it was probably the most offensive movie
I've ever seen. Like, I don't know, it was right
at the end where he was like, he won? And he
had the gold medal? and then he was like you
know i'm i got to tell the truth i gotta come
clean up i'm not retarded these guys are they
deserve to have this metal and it was just like
it was so bad and and then the the love interest
kath uh... kathryn heigl well i don't know what
she was doing in this movie but she was cash
in a paycheck but like she was like yes yes you're
not retarded way to go It was so bad, and that
was it. And then I had to go back and work, and
I was so depressed for the rest of the day. So
while on break at work. Yeah. I don't know. Never
watched The Ringer ever, Jesus. Wow. You don't
want to see the whole movie? I couldn't last
because the whole movie is based on the premise
of like... Hey, you know how you laugh at retarded
people when no one's looking? You can watch a
movie and then laugh, and I don't know, you'll
feel good about yourself because they're... I
don't even know, like, there's nothing good about
that movie. I hate it. Strong words, I hate Johnny
Knoxville and the Ringer. As a person who has
a mentally handicapped person in my family really
close to me, well, kinda close to me as a cousin
that I grew up with. I find that being able to
laugh at something that is normally very depressing
is a good thing. I don't know if Johnny Knoxville
is the best choice. I don't know if this movie
is any good. I remember seeing ads for it and
being like, I don't know, guys. It sounds like
a live -action South Park to me, really. Yeah.
I don't know. It was just - And I think it was
the Park Kids ad -advent episode before. So I
don't know. I'm going to go with Nate. You could
probably miss it if you haven't already missed
it. I've never been a huge Johnny Axl fan just
in general. I know a lot of people like his stuff
and think it's hilarious. I don't know. I have
a different sense of humor, I guess. And something
else that you guys saw that I didn't really see
a lot of because I came in at the end. But I
don't think either... Had either of you seen
this film beforehand, King Arthur? No. I had.
So in the 90s, when I was growing up, or the
early 2000s, I saw King Arthur. I saw Superman
Returns. And I loved them as a kid. And then
I heard all these reviewers smashing them and
people on the earlier internet smashing them.
And so as an adult, I was like, I bought them
both. And I'm like, maybe I was wrong. And I'll
re -watch them. And that's why I watched Superman
Returns about a month ago and then King Arthur
just a couple days ago. Were you wrong or were
you right? I was right as a child. They're both
great movies and I think anyone who's bashing
them needs to calm down. They're wrong. I don't
know. I think King Arthur was... King Arthur
wasn't a really great movie. It was just kind
of... It felt bland to me. Like, I don't know.
I didn't get behind it at all. Like, I had some
problems with it not being... the legend of King
Arthur. You know, you'd be like, I'm gonna go
see a King Arthur. I'm gonna have a wizard telling
a little boy about how he gets the sword, he
becomes the King of England, and it's a magical
sword. And that's, you know, that's what I want
from a King Arthur movie. That said, dumb. Like,
the only problem I really had with this movie
was the blurb at the beginning, like, this is
a historical accuracy, and we found our theological
text, you know, saying this is what happened.
Like, take that out. No one cares. No one cares.
Like, if you're... If your medieval fantasy movie
is more historically accurate than the other
dudes. Like, no one. So, you take that, and I
think it's a pretty good movie. I mean, there
are some inaccuracies, like them shooting barbed
wire arrows. Like, that was weird. But I thought
it had good fight scenes. I thought it had very
distinct characters that were all... I could
see what they were doing with them and relate
to them. And I liked it. I thought it was great.
And I'd love to see Keira Knightley. Yeah. And
I'd love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd love
to see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira
Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira Knightley.
And I'd love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd
love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to
see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira
Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira Knightley.
And I'd love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd
love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to
see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira
Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira Knightley.
And I'd love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd
love to see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to
see Keira Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira
Knightley. And I'd love to see Keira Knightley.
And I Yeah. All right. And bouncing all over
all kinds of crazy stuff that we watched. I want
to get into one that I know Matt, you've seen
before a lot about it. And I had never seen it
before. So Nathan wanted me to see it. So we
watched this for the first time, for my first
time here. And that was V for Vendetta, which
I'm sure a lot of people listening to the podcast
will be familiar with that film. But before we...
get our thoughts. Matt, what is your experience
with that film and how do you either like or
dislike it? So I saw V for Vendetta in theaters.
Back when Nate and I were starting Movie Night,
we watched it again because he had to see it
for a class. And then I watched it just last
November. I love that class, by the way. I watched
it just last November because Nate and I's mutual
friend Robbie had never seen it. And then my
girlfriend Amy likes to watch it every fifth
of November. So I've read the graphic novel.
I read comic books, and I've seen the movie.
I would say they're both different takes, like
most Alan Moore adaptations. It's really good,
though not as good as the original, I think.
I think V does not come across nearly as insane
as he is in the comics. In the movie, it's like
a revolution. It's a revolution for the people,
and it's all great. In the books, it's like there's
this crazy guy, and he's blowing things up. uh...
but i i love the movie i thought it was done
well john heard that the great part of the dictator
uh... and uh... the voice uh... the guy does
the uh... you know we didn't i love i love you
do we think anything whether he's an elf or a
v or whatever so i mean i i love that movie i
think i think that's generally agreed upon like
everyone loved that movie nate do you agree yeah
i really enjoy that movie i've seen it plenty
of times and It's entertaining from start to
finish for me. I agree with most of what you
guys say. I really liked the second half of the
movie. Wait, starting when? Starting when she
gets captured and tortured. Or maybe slightly
before that. Do you have something against Natalie
Portman? No. Okay, no No, but they're there at
some point. Yeah, I think I'm going a little
bit ahead of that I think I think it was a little
bit before that where it picked up for me But
the first like I don't know the first like 20
to 30 minutes I'm just completely guessing but
I think that's about an accurate time stamp there
I just I was having trouble getting like and
get invested in it like really finding myself
like wanting to pay super attention and get involved
and you know kind of along for the ride I was
just kind of trying to figure out if I was interested
or not for the first like 20 minutes and I was
like I don't know about this film but then about
the time when I was saying that it picked up
and I enjoyed from there on out and I enjoyed
everything about the whole second half to two
-thirds, whatever it was. I don't know, something
about the first part just seemed a little bit
murky and mucky and slow, and maybe if I re -watched
it, having seen it, I will find more joy with
that first little bit, but that being said, I
did enjoy the film. I thought, especially like
I said, that last half was really good, and I
agree with Matt that Hugo Weaving's great in
that. Natalie Portman's good in it, not great,
but she's good. But most of the other characters
did a pretty good job in it, so I find it fun.
I don't know, what else do you guys have to say
about V for Vendetta? Anything? I think I have
to agree with you. Like, when you said that,
I don't think Natalie, you said Natalie Portman's
good, I don't think she's great. Like I never
thought about it like that was such a great movie
and Natalie Portman's probably my favorite actress
But like I don't yeah, I think I agree that she
didn't do the best she could have done in that
Yeah, then I think that was I don't know as far
as the times As far as when that movie came out
originally I don't know if it was like earlier
on before she really started Hitting it big with
some of her performances and maybe she was still
trying to like figure things out But I don't
know me or maybe it was just the the subject
material She was involved with maybe it was at
that point not something she could Kind of put
herself into as much or maybe it was just that
she was overshadowed by Hugo weaving and some
of those other characters But but I'm not saying
she was bad. She was good Hugo weaving in that
V has such a screen presence that it's hard to
compete when you're doing lines with V, because
I don't know, something about just like the mask,
you know, and I don't know, something about it,
it's kind of like Rorschach in Watchmen just
stole every scene he was in. It's kind of the
same thing. Yeah, I mean, I remember thinking
when I first saw it like, wow, he's taking a
role where you never see his face. Isn't that
risky as an actor? But he totally proved that
he was the superior actor in that movie. I agree.
In an interesting turn here, because one of the
most mysterious films of 2013 was a film called
Old Boy. And we talked about it a little bit
in a previous episode because Dan, I believe,
former co -actually saw that film and he made
some comments about it in brief as far as the
new one goes. The weird part about Old Boy was
that it got yanked from theaters so quickly last
year that virtually nobody was able to go see
it. It made just about no money, which was weird
because it... a lot of buzz going into it. It
was one of those films that when people were
just, when 2013 was just starting and people
were making lists of the films they were most
anticipating to see or what films were gonna
be, that they were looking forward to, et cetera,
there was a lot of buzz behind Old Boy and a
lot of people thought that it was gonna be a
pretty amazing film or at least something that
would have a little cult following or something.
And it just came out and disappeared so quick.
And apparently it was just an awful film. I haven't
seen it. But the reason I bring that up is because
the two of you, and I saw part of it, but the
two of you guys saw the original Old Boy, which
Dan had a lot of good comments about. So I'm
interested to get your guys overall on the original
Old Boy and what you thought of it. You want
to start, Nate? Yeah. I was completely... into
that movie. It was such a dense film that, I
don't know, it's hard to describe really. I'm
going to think about it actually. Matt, you go.
It felt like when I came in that you guys had
each just participated in a marathon of movie
mental exercises. We only saw the one movie that
day. Yeah, and I think that sums it up really
well was that there was so much going on. You
would get a reveal and you'd be like, oh, so
that's what's happening. And then it'd be like,
wait, no, there's more. At every scene, it was
just, there's more, there's more. Like, you're
learning things. And you had to do a lot as a
viewer, a lot more than you usually do with an
American movie. I don't know. You mentioned it's
a Korean movie. Like, they don't just hand it
to you. Like, they do with a lot of these bigger
movies in America. And I like that. I don't think
I enjoyed it as much as Nate. I mean, I loved
the movie. It was great. I wouldn't mind owning
it. But it was very exhausting. It's not one
I could watch regularly, because it's just so
much. It's so dense. It was like watching four
movies in two hours. I think it's kind of a movie
that you have to show people, but you never just
pop it in to watch. Exactly, exactly. But I did
enjoy it. It did so many things that you wouldn't
expect, and I think it's probably because it's
coming from the Korean point of view that, you
know, as an American audience, I just wouldn't
expect stuff like that to happen. It was just
so out there, a lot of the stuff that happened.
I don't know if we want to go into spoilers at
all about this movie, probably. No, I personally,
if you spoil one thing... It's not the type of
movie that you should... Yeah. Yeah, definitely
not, yeah. Some movies and spoilers don't affect
it too much, but I feel like a spoiler would
affect that one a lot. Yeah, definitely. I would
say definitely it crosses a lot of lines that
I don't think American movies would cross, which
is probably why the American one got bold and
said it probably did cross those lines or it
didn't. But I'm really interested in seeing the
American version now. Yeah. Yeah, I hear that
the American version's had a lot of weird things
about it, like the... It kept all the Korean
-ness of it, like there's a clue with steamed
dumplings and they kept it as steamed dumplings.
Oh, really? Yeah, and they kept the hammer fight
when it's set in Louisiana and everyone's fighting
with boards. It makes no sense whenever like
a gang would be fully equipped with guns because
it's Louisiana. What's that? It's like a nail
hammer two by four fight that makes sense in
a country that doesn't have a lot of guns. That's
really true gun laws. Yeah, in America, he would
be gunned down quickly. Yeah. So I don't know.
I really want to see it, but I don't know. It
sounds weird. Like, it shouldn't have been made.
I do have a comment, actually, about what I would,
having known nothing about the american version
after seeing the korean one and hearing hey they're
gonna make an americanized version of this what
i would rather have is a honestly i know it's
probably a terrible thing to say a less dense
version where it's like he gets captured he's
thrown in this room and he's watching kung fu
movies and it's like a montage of him like trying
to do the kung fu moves and then he just like
gets out and it's just uh him punching people
for an hour like i mean that kind of like the
whole like oh boy it's such a dense it's so great
story I kind of want two versions where I've
got this great movie to show my friends, and
then this a lot less intense movie where it has
a similar plot, but there's a montage and punching.
A lot more punching. It's just like a popcorn
action film. Yeah. I kind of want both of those.
And I know I'm not actually going to get it,
but I can't wait to see the second one anyway.
The newer version of it has a 44 % on Rotten
Tomatoes. It grossed $850 ,000 in its first five
days, which according to this is one of the weakest
Thanksgiving openings of all time. And it opened
in 17th place at the box office. So that's not
a real good opening. And it only made under $5
million, which is not a lot of money in movie
terms. So yeah, so we'll have to see if we get
a chance to hopefully watch that one together
and finally see what the big problem with it
was as far as the 2013 release starring Josh
Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, and
some others. Elizabeth Olsen, if you guys don't
know, the sister of Mary -Kate and Ashley Olsen
is in that one. I didn't know there was a third
one. Yes, and she actually has a legit acting
career, so it's kind of interesting. Speaking
of Mary -Kate and Ashley Olsen, I saw The Little
Rascals! That is, to me, the most random film
you saw this week. Yeah, no, I don't know. I
watched The Little Rascals, the 1994 version.
And the only point I want to make about this
movie is... Like, whatever, it's a fine kids
movie. It's got silly acting from, like, kids
that shouldn't be acting. But, um, it has some
of the weirdest cameos ever. Like, big names
and weird names. Like, Mel Brooks is in it. Uh,
Whoopi Goldberg, but she was in the 90s everywhere.
Um, Daryl Hannah. Reva McIntyre. Uh, Mary Kay
and Ashley Olsen, whatever. Donald Trump is in
the movie. Um, and then George Wendt is in the
movie. And it's just like, why? I don't know.
They had so many big 90s stars, I guess. Did
you enjoy the film? Yeah. I mean, I liked it
as a kid. And it's stupid. It's really dumb.
But I don't know. It's got charm. It's a charming
film. I've actually never seen it. It kind of
came out a little bit after my time as far as
that genre of films go. I guess I wasn't interested
in that type of film when I was that age. And
you were a little bit younger than me, so I can
see you. Oh, yeah, yeah. But yeah, I don't know
if I'll see that one or not. I was like six when
it came out, so. Yeah. That's about the right
age. Also speaking of Elizabeth Olsen, for those
people who haven't seen her in a film yet, you
will be getting the chance soon because she's
not only in Godzilla this year, but she will
also be Scarlet Witch in Captain America, The
Winter Soldier. So you can see. Oh, fun. Elizabeth
Olsen in that role. Alright, and last week we
were all about crappy movies, so we wanted to
take another chance to watch one together from
beginning to end. We had our own little crappy
movie night and we watched a fantastic film,
which I'm not even joking when I say that, even
though I'm laughing. I really suggest everybody
go see this film that's interested in what we're
talking about with Crappy Movie Night. And the
name of the film is Nazis at the Center of the
Earth. This movie was so fun. It was so fun.
For those of you ... I don't even know how to
give a premise for this film, but it's exactly
what the title says. There's Nazis at the center
of the earth. It was interesting. You were talking
about old boy having to reveal, and then you
think you understand what's going on, and then
there's ... says no or there's a different reveal.
To me, that was this film. Every time I thought
I had seen everything and I thought it had gone
as far crazy as it could, it got crazier. We
can't really say too much about the film because
I really don't want to spoil it. Not that anyone's
actually going to go see this, but I really hope
somebody does. I hope every single person that
listens to this podcast goes to Netflix. It's
on Netflix. Yes, on Netflix. You can get it for
free. I mean, technically not, but whatever.
Netflix it. Watch it have some fun. It's so good.
It's only like an hour and a half But you're
gonna feel like you've been entertained for like
three hours Laughing is good for you. This is
definitely one to get some laughs It is just
like oh, and I guess we should say who is the
big one of the big names Gary Busey's relative
Jake Busey. Jake Busey, who's Gary Busey's son,
plays the professor in this movie. They don't
even need to know who he plays because just watch
the film for about 20 minutes. You will be able
to identify which one is a Busey. You'll be like,
is that guy trying to be like Gary Busey? He's
kind of doing it okay. He kind of looks like
Gary Busey. He's like a scaled back Gary Busey.
He's slightly less crazy. He looks like he could
be Gary Busey's younger, like... Winbrother or
something. If Gary Busey has a Rambo, Jake Busey
should play the prequel of the Gary Busey Rambo
or whatever movie it is, Gary Busey's Rambo.
I would, I would see, or no, it's Rocky, whatever.
It's a Devin Stallone movie that has the prequel,
whatever. They're all the same. Um, the, the,
I don't know, the best payoff for this film is
the fact that everybody should watch this film
and you're... You're gonna have the unexpected
happen go through twists and turns that you did
not expect and then at the end of it You're gonna
say to yourself. Why didn't I expect that? I
don't know if I've ever had that type of movie
experience where I was just completely like,
no they didn't, and then immediately they did
something completely different that was even
a different level of no they didn't. And there
is hope for a sequel to it. No way. Yeah, it
was a post -credit scene. That's a lead into
a sequel, right? I told them Marvel, they did
a post -credit scene that totally says, there's
potential here. I seriously thought Kevin was
doing his movie news magic and found out that
they're on production working on Nazis of the
Sun and the Earth 2. I have developed Inside
Track to Asylum. So badly. I have a few suggestions
for them. I've got one problem with this movie,
which was there were roughly 10 people. in this
movie like it wouldn't surprise me that if the
nazis that were wearing masks were just the students
that weren't in that scene like it just felt
like there was there was no one in this movie
and i don't know why they couldn't go on craigslist
or whatever and put up hey we need 12 extras
but you're naming the credits no pay and then
well give them laughs and then just you know
sprinkle them into the movie like it just needed
more bodies I don't think they can find enough
people in Antarctica. Come on. Oh, I forgot.
Yeah, I know. If you like Nazis, I'm sorry. Nobody
likes Nazis. If you like Nazis, if you like stuff
about being in the middle of the earth, if you
like science fiction slash horror genre, silly
films, or just you like crabby movies and period,
or if you're just... A human being, you should
watch this film. Like, Nazis at the center of
the earth. It sounds so bad, and it is so good.
It's exactly like Land of the Lost with Brendan
Fraser, except replace Gary Busey with Brendan
Fraser and then you're good. I don't think it's
anything like that. No, I think that's perfect.
Only the comedy in this one's funnier. Oh yeah,
definitely. And there's not really crappy 3D
effects. One, you said it, horror. And I guess
that was an element to it. It was supposed to
be kind of like a horror movie. As I said last
week with the human centipede talk, I do not
like gross. I do not like gore. There was one
scene that started off being very intense, gory,
like this is violence on my movie, that immediately
turned so comedically cartoon -y. that it just
turned that switch off in my mind. And I'm like,
nothing they do will ever be taken seriously
from this point on. Yeah, there was a couple
points where I turned away almost because I was
like, I don't want to see what's about to happen.
And it wasn't as bad. But no, it's almost, I
guess when I say horror film, I'm not talking
about like a straight up horror film. I'm thinking
more of like the films like, what is it, like
The Thing or like, Any any type like that element
of horror films where there's like a people trying
to escape or avoid the The yeah, you know the
plan that is being planned for them by the villains
or the you know antagonist, etc So it has like
that little element of like survival type Situation
on it which reminded some of those campy horror
films. It's like saw with Nazis and better in
the middle of the earth In the middle of the
earth, center. With the area in the center of
the earth, with clouds and suns that are really
not clouds and suns, which I thought was a cool
effect actually. I could say that was actually
a really good effect, the way they did the clouds.
I don't know about the sun, the clouds for sure.
So here's the hope, that at least one of you
will go watch that and then comment on the episode
post about what you think. Yeah, definitely.
I want to get people's reactions from this film.
It's on Netflix. It's free. If you have Netflix,
go view it and comment on it. And we're very
much looking forward to interacting with you
about your opinions of Nazis at the center of
the earth. Any other thoughts on the movie, Nate?
No. It's good. Matt? I don't know. I could talk
for hours about it. It's great. Go watch it.
Yes. All right. As far as Other stuff that you
might be interested in watching, stuff that's
being released this week on Blu -ray and stuff
that's coming to the theater. There is a few
movies that we talked in depth about last year
that are about to hit Blu -ray and DVD release.
One of those movies would be American Hustle,
which is out on the Combo Pack here this Tuesday.
We also have Nate, Frozen. Yay. Even though it's
still in the theater, which we didn't say in
the box office, but it brought in another $2
million this last week. It's still in the theater?
Yes. Jesus. It brought in another $2 million,
or just over $2 million, which now puts it just,
I believe, $4 million short of that, what was
it, the $400 billion mark? Yeah. Was that Transformers
or whatever? Yeah. It was something right behind
something, but it's getting real close to that
400 million market. If it's out two more weeks,
it probably hits it. So you can go buy Frozen.
You can go buy American Hustle. Apparently, you
can go buy The Jungle Book 2. I don't know what
that is. Is that that? Oh, they made The Jungle
Book 2. And then, yeah, it was from 2003. Interesting,
well that's coming out apparently on blue right
now. It's a Disney vault thing. Gotcha, okay
Disney vault. So as far as the big films though,
American Hustle, Frozen, and then the other one
being Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom, which was
a big one that came out last year. So you can
see all of those as well as some crazy other
stuff. Atlantis, season one, like Nate said,
or like we talked about. Jungle Book 2, any of
those... Hold on, hold on. I'm sorry, there's
a movie on this list called Here Comes the Devil,
and that sounds hilarious. And I think if you
buy that, you're also... If you buy that, you
can get the Slumber Party Massacre for free,
which is also coming out there. And the Kill
Your Darlings combo pack, it seems like. No,
I don't know what that is. That's probably not
even horror. Are you guys interested in either
purchasing any of those films? Nate, are you
going to get Frozen? Definitely, probably tomorrow.
Oh, I assumed you had frozen on pre -order. No,
I don't. I go to Target. I personally will probably
buy American Hustle, even though I haven't seen
it. It was the one movie I was the most excited
about in 2013, but never made it out to see.
I really, really love heist movies, so I'll probably
just buy it and see it. Here's to see it. If
you buy it, though, Nate needs to see it. Totally.
I'm speaking for him. did you see it kevin? yes.
what did you think? yay or nay? it was good.
it did not make my... i said yay or nay! yay.
alright, alright. we gotta keep it snappy. we
gotta keep it snappy. keeping it snappy. alright,
as far as theater releases coming out this week.
like i said, divergent coming out thursday night.
muppets most wanted coming out thursday night.
those are probably the only two that you need
to know about. if you're interested in any of
the other ones you can click on our... Paid our
website and you can see the other films that
are coming out nymphomaniac volume one limited
release I know there's been some talk about that
film as well As far are you guys interested?
I know you're interested in Muppets Is that the
either of you have any interest in divergent
or do your girlfriends have interest in divergent?
What's divergent again? I forget. It's like a
sci -fi young adult novel. Oh It's uh, yeah,
it's like not Twilight. Yeah, it's not I am I
hadn't I don't know. So until I started doing
this I Was woefully lacking in movie news and
information and trailers and everything. I don't
have I don't have cable I don't have it. I really
don't have a television hooked up to anything
just in Netflix And so like I'm way behind that
really bothers me. I actually saw the Divergent
Barbies I think it was when I was at Toys R Us
over the weekend looking at Star Wars toys. That's
what I do and I I'm a little interested, but
I probably won't see it. One movie that's in
limited release that I wanted to mention was
A Birder's Guide to Everything, because that
looks like a very fun movie that I wouldn't mind
seeing if I could get it. What's that one about?
It's about a cult of birders, which are people
that are bird watchers, bird viewers, see a bird
that they think is extinct, and then I guess
they... They try to go and hunt it down because
it's going to be a big thing and then it's a
coming of age flick. But the point about it though
that I get from it is Ben Kingsley is in it and
it doesn't look like he's playing a bad guy.
Which role was he playing in it? I don't know.
He's just there. The professor I get that they
go to for information and help seems to have
a slightly possible bad guy turn at the end.
Damn it! Oh man. Of course he would! Then he
won't really be bad, you know, piss people off.
Anyways, going into what we usually do next,
which is our credit conversation, talking a little
bit about our feedback from last week. And we
did get a good number of comments. We had about
25, 30 comments on the website there. As far
as our episode last week, and the question that
we had asked was, number one, what's your favorite
crappy movie? But we got more feedback actually
about West Side Story. Oh yeah. A lot of feedback
about West Side Story, most of which was not
necessarily excitement for it. I'm going to comment
right now. I'm going to go in. So everyone who's
like, don't do a West Side Story remake, guess
what? It's not going to change the old one. The
old one's great. Let's get another good one.
Yeah, it doesn't hurt the old on you can have
two good things You can have or you can have
one good thing and one really bad thing and then
you'll can laugh at the really bad things Still
have the good thing. I got the good thing So
yeah, there was a one person said, please God
know West Side Story remake or well, let's know
Please God know West story remake, which I don't
know. Maybe he's thinking of a different film
But there was a few people that thought it could
be pulled off and some people that were interested
to see if Spielberg could do it. As far as some
crappy movies, I wanted to real quick name a
few things that people talked about. Classic
Delta Force, Lone Wolf McQuade, basically anything
that had Chuck Norris or David Carradine in it.
Go ahead. I was going to say, we've watched a
lot of Chuck Norris and David Carradine movies.
The weirdest David Carradine movie probably being
Evil Toons, which was awkward to say the least.
And then there was one Chuck Norris movie which
has probably my favorite off, you know, just
one throwaway scene, which is where Chuck Norris
is going to go save his friends, and it's like
a mixture of like, these are my friends that
made it this country, and now I got to go back
to the country to save them. And like, it shows,
it cuts back in the past. He's on top of a tower,
he pulls out two grenades, tosses the pins, jumps
into a group of enemies that are all armed with
rifles, and then just cuts the present. Boom.
Like what? No, he's holding grenades. Like, he
jumped into a bunch of guys. No, he's fine, he's
Chuck Noah's. Yeah, they have Chuck Noah's. Also,
Jim Cotta was one that mentioned, and I was actually
expecting somebody to mention it. I'm glad they
did. I don't know, because I wanted to ask you
guys if you've seen it or not, but the quote
-unquote worst movie of all time, Troll 2. Oh,
I've seen it. Matt, have you seen that one, too?
I have not. Nate and I came upon the whole bad
movie night idea on our own, and then I heard
later about movies like Troll 2, The Room, and
what's the other one that's really common? I
don't remember. Birdemic. Birdemic, that's the
other one that will be big. We've seen Birdemic.
We've seen The Room. I haven't gotten a copy
of Troll 2. I don't know if it's on any of the...
I've got access to Hulu and Netflix and Amazon
Prime. I should see if I can get it. I saw it
on Netflix. Is it the worst movie of all time,
Nate? No. It depends on what you... One out of
a movie because it was completely entertaining
because of the terrible dialogue and because
of the terrible effects It was just fun to watch
But then you get a movie. That's just super boring
that I would probably say that would be worse.
I actually was just talking to my cousin this
last week about Troll 2 for some reason. He was
saying that there's a documentary out there where
they talk about or they're talking to the director
or the writer or something and he's actually
defending the film and saying that it was actually
a serious film and he wasn't meaning it to be
a bad film. Generally those are the best. If
a filmmaker goes into a movie trying to make
the best thing he can make and then he makes
a pile of crap. That's generally better than
a person that goes in trying to make a pile of
crap. Unless you're working with the asylum.
Well, yeah. I hope the asylum is 100 % serious.
I hope it's the most serious movie industry,
studio, whatever, out there. But I'm really worried
about Bird Dimmick 2, because Bird Dimmick 1
was so hilarious, because I felt like they were
trying to do something good, but then, like...
It just went horribly wrong because they had
no idea what they were doing. But now they're
making Birdemic 2 and they're like, we're gonna
make it like it was before because you guys like
that. And then it's gonna lose all of the like
heart and soul of that movie. Even though, I
don't know if you could say that there's heart
and soul in Birdemic. So some other films that
got mentioned, Sharknado, Land Sharks, Howard
the Duck, Tiptoes, Birdemic. Super Mario Brothers,
Street Fighter, Double Dragon. No, no, no, no.
No, Street Fighter is a legitimately awesome
movie. I'm with Nate. I enjoyed it. I do think
they cast probably the wrong person for him,
Bison. No! And some funny movies where it's like,
what are these? Those are Bison dollars, uh -huh.
I think it had some moments that were bad. I
legitimately liked it, though. What about Double
Dragon? I also liked Double Dragon as a kid.
I don't remember it. I know it doesn't follow
the video game. That bothers me. It's got some
floating pendant and stuff. It's got some mystical
elements. But I enjoyed it when I was eight and
I saw it. Yeah, but they're not just going to
make a ninja movie about someone stealing someone's
girlfriend. Why not? And then you have to go
back and fight ninjas. I don't know. Yeah, I
guess I don't know. I could watch either. Demolition
Man, Mortal Kombat Annihilation. The moral content
movies are awesome. I saw those and didn't enjoy
them too, so I don't know. I actually enjoy those
too. And then Jason Mack's also got to mention
as a favorite bad movie. Some of these I don't
know if they would qualify necessarily as bad
movies. Maybe films that people just didn't like.
But I do think like Birdemic, Troll 2, and some
of the other ones mentioned definitely fall into
the kind of category that we're trying to talk
about. Was Demolition Man sponsored by Taco Bell
or something? The guy's like, speaking of Taco
Bell, how about Demolition Man? I don't know.
I don't know where that came from. Maybe there
was cups at Taco Bell that had Demolition Man
on them? I don't know. It might have had a Taco
Bell scene. I don't remember. Like Super Product
placement? Like Superman? Yeah, probably. Superman
didn't have product. Oh, go watch that again.
You're talking about Man of Steel, not Superman.
Oh, yeah. That's what I mean. I was going to
say, in Superman, there was one product placement
I noticed, which was he was eating Cheerios.
And I turned to Robby, and I was like, is that
a product placement? Because it's half a box
of Cheerios. You can barely read it, but we all
know it's Cheerios with the yellow box. And he
goes, are you kidding me? Every kid in America
was probably like, I need to eat Cheerios like
Superman. And I was like, yeah, you're probably
right. Speaking of product placement, Transformers
4 is coming out this year. Anyway, so thanks
for all the feedback. We look forward to some
more feedback in next week when you guys can
give us your feedback on our thoughts on Nazis
at the center of the universe. Those of you that
have seen Oldboy or V for Vendetta, you can talk
about that a little bit. What do we want to ask
them for next week, guys? I had a question if
no one else had thought of one. Perfect. I got
nothing. Which was, what movie's ending, whether
it was a twist or not a twist, was the most surprising?
Because we had a lot of surprise twist endings,
both Old Boy, which was really a twist ending,
as well as Next to the Earth, which had two double
twists. Or what movie had a twist ending that
didn't surprise you at all? Because at the same
time, Old Boy's twist was kind of twisting, but
I kind of, I guess I foresaw it about a minute
before it happened. So the most predictable or
the most surprising twist of any movie you've
ever seen? Yeah. Our comment section is going
to be volatile. Like, you don't want to look?
I'm gonna want to look. I hope it reads conversation.
They're gonna ruin all the movies you haven't
seen yet. They don't necessarily have to say
what the twist is, they can just say the twist
in. And if you want to talk about it, definitely
warn about spoilers, because otherwise you're
a mean person. Give us some spoiler tags, or
we may hate you forever. Secretly joke about
you on our future podcast No, we would never
do that. Just kidding. Oh I gotta make sure are
we are we doing a segment where we talk about
like how you can contact us? Yes, that is good
whatever All right, so we got a lot of different
ways that you can get into contact with us or
follow the show. First of all, you can call the
voicemail line 502 -526 -5821 where you can leave
us a message. Just remember to tell us what show
you're leaving the message for and give us a

during the week. You can visit the Facebook page
by searching Geekcast Radio Network. The Twitter
for the network is at Geekcast Radio. Mine is
at Optimus Solo Nathan. I changed my Twitter
name because I felt like it. It is now at Adolfo
Shabadoo, and I'll have Kevin have that in the
show notes so you can see the correct spelling
and everything. And Matt? I set up a Twitter
shortly after the last MY. Mine is at Fridley
Cent, because my last name is Fridley, and it's
a joke on Friddy of 50 Cent, because you didn't
get that. My last name is... It's pretty complicated
because everyone always pronounced it wrong.
It's like Friday with an L -E instead of an A,
and then sent C -E -N -T, not S -E -N -T, so
F -R -I -D -L -E -Y -C -E -N -T. I'm sure he'll
post it somewhere that you can read it. Yes.
Links in the show notes. Yes. Show notes. I have
