network of podcasts. Coming up on NBR Weekly,

some apparent secret Marvel projects, and a general

discussion about horror movies. That and much

more coming up on NBR Weekly. Welcome to and

Maya weekly where we discuss the movie week.

That was I am one of your hosts movie revolt

Dan and joining me on today's adventure are Kevin

optimus solo Thompson. How are you today? Not

too bad and Michael booth powers. How are you?

I am fantastic Alrighty for those return visitors

or those joining us for the first time. We begin

each show with a look at what we've been watching

recently. We'll then move on into movie news

and then mosey on over to our main attraction.

For our main attraction this week we actually

have something a little bit different as we'll

be doing a general discussion on horror movies.

And after that, we will be finishing up with

our look at coming attractions as we look at

the DVD and Blu -ray releases and finish with

our credit conversation where we review the feedback

from last week and look ahead for the feedback

for next week. With all that said, I guess I'll

just throw it over to all of you. So who would

like to start with what they've been watching

recently? I didn't watch anything this week because

I've been doing stuff for my other podcast, which

is apparently playing video games. Oh, wait,

I take that back. No, I apologize. I did see...

You guys are familiar with Riff Tracks, I believe.

Yes? Yes. On Thursday, they did a Riff Tracks

live of Night of the Living Dead. Nice. And I'm

curious, and I didn't bother to look any of this

up because I thought we could have a discussion

about this here. Was Night of the Living Dead

remade at one point? Or is it by itself because

and I asked this because I know a lot of people

say that George Romero is he's kind of the father

of the zombie genre and I was watching Night

of the Living Dead and when I wasn't laughing

at what was being said because of the Rift Track

commentators I was noticing certain things about

the zombies and that they were running slash

jogging and They were intelligent Often picking

up weapons to use or avoiding danger not just

they weren't just mindless Roaming beings and

I know that that's like that's why I'm wondering

if it was ever Remade by him or something like

that or if he just turned the zombies into something

else and in a later movie but My understanding

is that's kind of the first one And they exhibited

a lot of the traits that zombies in movies, you

know, show now that people get really mad about.

It was remade in the 90s. I'm assuming the one,

I think the Rift Tracks one was the black and

white one, correct? Yes, it was. It was the original

like 68 or something like that. They've had a

few different re -releases. They've done colorized

versions. They've done the one in, there was

a 90, a 30th anniversary edition that they filmed

additional scenes. and had a revised soundtrack.

So there's been like adjustments to it. I'm not

super familiar with the franchise. Well, I just

know what I'm asking is because there's like

there's Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, right? But

Evil Dead 2 is just Evil Dead 1 with more money.

Yeah. And so I was kind of wondering if Night

of the Living Dead was ever so successful that

he got another shot at doing it. And then he

made the zombies more along the lines of the

slow, meandering, mindless beings That we know

and love today, I don't believe he's ever remade

it I mean it was remade in the 90s I mean because

after the night of living and dead it was like

the you know sequel to that was dawn of the dead

was supposed to be like that direct sequel so

I think in that too is when The zombies started

to more shape into what we know today Because

I think that was like nothing that was a hit,

but I think that was even more What kind of even

broke them out even further was the the dawn

of the dead and it's been a while since I saw

it's under the dead But I think they're pretty

You know your stereotype stereotypical zombies

for what I can remember But honestly, I remember

watching the end of living dead But I don't remember

them ever being any fast zombies or like intelligent

zombies. So well, it was okay like the first

zombie you see actually chases after The I guess

she could be considered the female lead. Although

I think she had like five lines of dialogue in

the entire movie He actually he actually in the

beginning he actually starts chasing after and

then like the next scene He's kind of jogging

and then the next scene he's just kind of running

but he's like catching up to her So I guess he

kind of slows down like the closer he gets to

her. Yeah and then they show them like avoiding

fire and they show them actually picking up clubs

and pieces of wood to break down doors and one

zombie even stabs another, stabs another human

being with a shovel. Instead of just attacking

them and biting them. So I was just, I was just

curious what, what, you know, if you guys were

familiar with this, I mean, it seems like, it

seems like he, it sounds like he shaped them

into what they were, but the original, I guess

the original film cinematic zombie wasn't. you

know, what it is today. It seems like what they

are today might be more in line with what they

were after seeing this movie. Somewhere in the

middle, they have this, you know, there's the

meandering ones that everyone likes from The

Walking Dead, and then there's, you know, the

ones from the remake of Dawn of the Dead where

they run, or even World War Z where they run.

Yeah, I mean I mean before Romero like zombies

were completely different. I mean you had like

movies like white zombie, which They're more

like magical based and things like that. They

weren't necessarily like the living dead per

se I think it was if anything maybe like a natural

progression You know, I mean he didn't maybe

get it to the point where he wanted it But he

eventually got there because even if you go later

to like his more recent stuff like land of the

dead Which is you know within that series they

even become smarter in that and they begin using

weapons and guns and like to begin like Remembering

and becoming they evolve throughout that series

So I don't know if like he knew back then that

they were they were started a certain port Keep

the evolving and then start re -evolving because

in dawn of the dead I don't believe I think they're

pretty you know, like I mentioned you're generic

You know zombie for what we know and what we

like more associate with like the walking bit

right So that's that's that's what I saw. It

was actually it was a really funny movie It was

really funny because of the riff tracks thing.

Um, what was really the really cool thing about

it though was the theater that we went to um,

I have a friend that lives in lansing michigan

And we drove the 45 minutes over there to go

see it at the theater, the heat that was playing

it out there. And I had been to the theater once

before to see Monsters Inc, like, what was it,

2001 to when that came out. And so I walked I

walked into the theater and I was like, this

does not look like the theater that I was in,

like way back when this theater was amazing.

It's one of those theaters where when you buy

your ticket, you're actually buying your seat.

OK, so it's not like first come first serve.

It's you can walk in like, you know, two minutes

before the movie starts and get your seat right

in the center. And they serve alcohol and actual

food and not just like movie theater food. And

the whole lobby was just the whole place was

just really nice because they don't have to contend

with the idea of lines like people waiting to

get into a movie. So they had all this like really

fancy furniture and like fireplaces and places

to sit and hang out while you wait for your movies

and stuff like that. It was it was just really

nice. The only downside of it is I actually for

the first time ever, I ended up losing my wallet

in the theater. Oh, I've done that. And and well,

like I said, the theater was 45 minutes away

from my house. And when we left when we left

the theater and we're getting ready to get on

the expressway I was kind of like, you know,

maybe I should stop and get something to drink

I should stop and get something to drink and

then I was like, no, no, no, it's way too late

I just I have to get home so I can go to bed

so I can get up to go to work and I drove the

45 minutes back home and then the gas light on

my car went off and I stopped and stopped to

get gas and I went inside to prepay and I realized

I didn't have my wallet Luckily, my wife was

with me and she had all of her cards But I was

like, oh, you know what, if I just stopped to

get a drink before I got on the expressway in

Lansing, I would have my wallet right now because

I could have turned around and gotten it. Luckily,

they found it. So I was able to drive back the

next day and pick it up. So nothing's worse than

losing your wallet. Like that's like my entire

life. I feel so naked without my wallet. Yeah.

But yeah, that's definitely interesting. I. I

saw a lot of commercials for the rift tracks

thing, but I never I didn't get the opportunity

to see it. So that's pretty cool. But so did

the rift tracks definitely make that more of

an enjoyable watch? I mean. I couldn't actually

see myself watching that version of the Living

Dead just because of how old it is. I mean, and

it was it was really funny just by itself, like

it was not scary in the least. but it's kind

of that's the way things are right like what

was scary back then is kind of the norm now um

like i remember the exorcist used to be a thing

right and um in 2000 what was it four the fall

of 2004 when uh the big exorcist the beginning

was coming to theaters My roommate in college

and I, we watched this documentary about the

exorcist and how it was like considered like

the scariest movie ever made and all this stuff.

And we're like, I was like, you know, I've seen

this movie once and I don't remember it being

that scary. And she was kind of like, well, I've

never seen it. And I was like, really? And I

was like, well, maybe maybe we should go and

rent it so we can actually see if it's as scary

as people say it is. And we went and rented it

and we had a bunch of a bunch of our friends

over for like a movie night on a Friday night.

And the movie was in for about five minutes before

we all started making fun of it. Like, I just

it's I think that's just kind of weird how something

that was scary, you know, 30 years ago is just

no longer. I guess I guess it could be scarier

to like a younger individual. Like if it's your

first horror movie ever, I guess. I think it

depends. I don't know. It's been a while since

I've seen The Exorcist, but I still think that's

a really that movie of. Of a lot of the classic

horror movies is one that's that holds up really

well. It's like that in the shining Probably

only two that I can really think Yeah, I mean

like if you go based on special effects or something

like that Maybe but just the filmmaking itself

is pretty legendary and I still think that on

that end. It's still really great But well nothing

like the move. I'm not saying the movies are

bad. I'm saying they're just not scary Yeah,

I don't know like I have like I said, I haven't

watched the exercise in a while But yeah, I mean,

I watched Dracula, the original Dracula, and

in today's standards, it's pretty laughable.

I remember we were trying to watch Children of

the Corn for the first time with one of my friends

in high school and it was the same thing. It

was 15 minutes and we couldn't stop laughing.

Yeah. Because you have to compare it to what

you've probably seen, like the stuff you're currently

seeing on the screen or you're able to see. And

then it's like that stuff might scare you because

it's either One is either like way over the top

and makes you feel uncomfortable or it's Or it's

just genuinely scary and then you go back and

look at this other stuff and there's like it

just doesn't Have that it doesn't have that look

that modern -day cinema does and it's just kind

of you can kind of see how certain things were

done or something stands out and I don't know

like when I when I can see that stuff. It's It's

like when I I talked about on an earlier episode

where I took a Vidcon class in middle school

and they taught me about how you fill a frame

and stuff like that and so it's kind of when

I watch a horror movie I always watch to see

like is the character in the center of the screen

no they're off to the right okay that means something's

going to appear to their left or oh she just

opened the refrigerator door if she shuts it

there's probably going to be something there

it's more like anything with like a mirror that

kind of tactic it's like Just look for those

kind of things to get me through horror movies,

but But we can talk about that more in the main

attraction stuff. Yeah, so Kevin did you watch

anything this past week? The only movie I got

to see this week was the counselor which I know

you saw as well And your review is up on the

site for people to check out But that's the only

one I saw so I can kind of piggyback with your

discussion on that possibly Okay, what did you

overall think of the counselor? I thought it

was a disappointment. I thought it had potential

to be better than it was. I didn't have some

of the same issues that you had with it. I had

some different issues. But overall, I agree with

you that I just don't think it quite lived up

to as good as it could have been. It was unique,

I'll give it that, in certain ways. I'm not sure

if I've seen any films that would classify in

that same group. But yeah, I was a little disappointed.

Yeah, I mean, I'll agree with you there. Like

you mentioned, the reviews on the site. But my

biggest issue with that, and there's a lot of

it, is just that it's really unfocused. And it's

all this random parts that doesn't really add

up all to that much. Right from the beginning,

it's very forceful with its exploitation of sex

and violence and whatnot. And the plot is so

fragmented, and it has no connecting tissue.

The motivations behind the characters are non

-existent like they're even what they're really

attempting to accomplish is Unnecessarily ambiguous

and it just I don't know and then there's a lot

of the performances were uneven For those that

should mention it's the counselor, which is Ridley

Scott's most recent movie which he adapted Gorman

McCarthy's book and McCarthy I mean a lot of

his movies have been amazing movies like, you

know the no country for all men among the road

a few others and It has a lot of the feel of

a McCarthy novel But it just I don't know for

some whatever reason maybe Ridley Scott just

didn't really handle the material all that well

but yeah, I agree it was a disappointment for

me and And it just and the biggest probably the

thing that I took away the most from it was just

Karen Diaz should not be in that movie because

she was rather awful and It was every time she

was on screen. I was just like this is just a

bad performance all around It's one of the worst

performances and what should have been a better

movie all year for me. So I didn't have the same

plot issues that you did. My plot issues were

different because I kind of saw the connection.

I didn't see it as fragmented so much as I just

saw it as to me it was more simplistic and I

just I wanted more. I thought that plot was thin

in ways and I thought the ending was just like

one of those endings where someone doesn't know

how to end it so they just end it. But going

off that Cameron Diaz thing, one of the things

I liked about the plot or about the movie was

some of the dialogue. I thought there was some

clever and some witty dialogue. There were some

quotable things in there, some interesting, almost

monologue -type situations. And what really exemplifies

Cameron Diaz and how terrible she is in this

is at the end, most of the clever dialogue pieces

have been given to other people throughout the

film, whether it be Bardem or a red pit, or I

don't remember the one actor's name. But he played

a pretty important character. He had some good

dialogue in there. Then they finally have a moment

where they give Cameron Diaz one at the end.

And it was painful. It was almost like she was

reading it and doing a bad job of reading it.

Like there was little to no acting even being

done in that piece of dialogue. And she was just

really, really bad. I will agree with you. 100

% on that. Yeah, she was just very self -aware

and it just I don't know like she just Always

had a look on her face. It's like hey, I'm being

I'm the bad guy in this and everything was just

the extreme unnecessarily and was just trying

to be edgy and it just I don't know like everything

was trying to be edgy to the point where just

Like there was nothing to it. But yeah, it was

it was a little heavy in a lot of different areas

Definitely even the dialogue that I liked was

almost too much. Yeah too many times i do agree

there were some moments of really like i even

mentioned this my review like really well woven

dialogue moments but it was all for not really

i felt like those moments of dialogue were like

on a page or as you're hearing them yeah these

are like wow this is really well well written

but it didn't really lead to anything it was

just like people talking and it felt like no

one was ever talking to each other they were

just Mean part of that with our characters. They're

really full of themselves, but never really spoke

to one one of the it just seemed to be like every

person Everyone's story was within itself and

never did they connect in any interesting way

or barely there they but that was kind of my

biggest issue with it though So yeah for me,

I mean it had good characters. I had good actors

outside of Cameron Diaz. I had good dialogue

and To put that all together. They did nothing

as far as plot goes and instead they just threw

like a whole bunch of violence, a whole bunch

of sex, and a whole bunch of dialogue in there,

and hope that it would work. It just kind of

fell flat, especially the last act for me. Yeah,

I agree with that. But did you see anything else

besides the counselor? No, I was going to go

see Fifth Estate, and I just keep not getting

around to it. I've been wanting to see that for

a couple weeks now. I was going to see it back

to back today, but I... Just I've been kind of

fighting the cold our temperatures here probably

like some places where you guys drop from you

know Like 60 70 down to like freezing in the

last week and I'm fighting a cold for about three

or four days So I thought it better just to go

see one movie and then come and try to recuperate

Yeah, yeah, I don't believe you sometimes I don't

know theater seem to be like 30 degrees colder

No matter what it is outside. So we're so freezing

The only other I watch some other stuff, but

the only thing I'll touch on is I didn't get

to see 12 years of slave which is Steve McQueen's

latest film. It's getting a lot of acclaim. It

won the, you know, the audience award at TIFF.

You know, people are calling it a front runner

for best picture. And I finally got to catch

it this weekend and I always feel reluctant in

going to a movie like that that is so overly

praised. It seems like it's just, it's just begging

for people to call it overrated or begging for

people to say, oh, it's not as good as people

say it is. So I was curious to go into it. I've

liked Stephen Queen's other movies, Hunger and

Shame, both of which, well, Fassbender doesn't

star in Hunger, but he's part of it. So, and

this 12 Years a Slave, just the basic plot, it's,

I'm gonna butcher the guy's name, but, show today,

Ejiofor plays a free man who lives in the North,

and he's kidnapped and brought to the South as

a slave, and he's forced to become a slave for

like 12 years. Obviously isn't the title and

it's about like his adventure and his trials

throughout this You know this basically illegal

act takes place. So it apparently went out on

our wanna a courage throughout the United States

in very limited areas, but If you know anything

about McQueen's directing style, it's not very

Academy friendly and The the trailers make it

seem like it is but it really isn't I think I'm

worried some people might go into this they can

think it's like a crowd pleaser thinking it's

like I guess a good comparison would be like

the Butler or no other Movies that have dealt

with similar subject matters and it really isn't

that There are a great deal of moments with very

little to limited dialogue a lot of long takes

But it's really masterfully directed. I liked

it a great deal. Like I was looking at 12 years

of slave Captain Phillips and with gravity all

coming out in this within this month Like I cannot

think of a better month with those three movies

in quite a while. Like that's pretty impressive

But yeah, I really loved it. I don't know if

it's gonna the best movie of the year so far

I mean, that's that's hard to say but it's really

powerful. The performances are amazing. I Mean

Fassbender isn't that as well. He's great. We've

been into Cumberbatch. There's just it's packed

with talent directing wise it's really well done

great cinematography the score too is really

powerful I'll have a review of the site go into

more detail but suffice to say I really did like

it a lot so I would advise checking that one

out I've been waiting that one isn't playing

in any theaters near me yet but I've been waiting

for it to it's only on I think like a hundred

and some theaters right now But as soon as it

comes near me, I'll be seeing that one. Yeah,

it was actually went to a theater I never went

to before in Baltimore, which is like one of

our older theaters. It was like interesting because

it was like going back in time because it's a

very, you know, has not a lot of the common luxuries

that we're used to. It doesn't have all that

much. But it's pretty cool. It was kind of cool

going back in time, going to this theater. And

it was interesting too because there was like

no commercials or anything and I realized without

the commercials The movie ended at like 20 to

30 minutes earlier than I expected because I'm

so used to having like all those commercials

before a movie Yeah, anything else anyone wants

to go over before we take our first break I'm

good. All right, so we're gonna take a little

bit of break here and when we come back We'll

be reviewing this past week's movie news Pixels

and the animation has wrapped on the Super Mario

Brothers Super Show now TV's Mr. Neil and TF2

and Mike head to Hyrule That's right listeners

from episode 16 through episode 20 of PETA pain

in the ass We will be covering all 26 episodes

of the Legend of Zelda cartoon And we have a

surprise guest co -host for this arc Ender from

Radio Free Cybertron Excuse us podcasters You

can catch pixels in the animation on www .geekcastradio

.com and in iTunes. All right, and welcome back.

We'll begin the news like we always do as we

take a look back at the box office for this past

weekend. And since we started doing this, there's

been one constant and that's gravity number one.

But that finally has changed. And of course,

it is Knocked off its perch by Jackass of all

things interestingly enough You know Jack Ashley

this film Jackass presents bad grandpa Really

came out of the gates really strong with a 32

million dollar opening weekend Any of you surprised

that Jackass performed so well No, I'm not surprised

that it performed well. I'm surprised that it

was the thing that beat gravity I guess timing

wise and it was a perfect storm maybe but Yeah,

it made more than the jack in its opening weekend

It made more than jackass 1 & 2 but not as much

as jackass 3d mainly because jackass 3d had 3d

Ticket sales to kind of boost it up a bit But

it's already made bad back double its budget

already, which is not I mean not surprising considering

the way the movie was made But yeah, I mean it

I was reading something It's like 60 % of the

people that want to go see it were male like

I could understand that I'm not surprised. That's

higher I do want to see that. I do think it could

be funny. So I didn't have the opportunity, though.

My wife previewed it and said that all the funny

parts are in the trailer. That's disappointing.

And she said that she usually can get into that.

First of all, I can't get into the jackass type

stuff. It just doesn't appeal to me at all, but

it does to her. But then again, she's like eight

years younger than me. So. She's you know, she

finds that stuff amusing. I do not but yeah She

said all the funny stuff was in the trailer outside

of like two things that she actually laughed

at Yeah, I mean I guess I could watch that maybe

if it was free on TV or something But there's

way too many other movies I go see before it.

Yeah, you still you still have to see for the

statement You might actually want to catch that

quickly because I don't know how much long I

plan on how much longer it's gonna be Am surprised

a little week that we thought that Carrie might

build a little bit as as we approached Halloween

And then it might not drop off as much, but it

had a significant drop Yeah, it dropped over.

You know about sixty three percent from this

week to last week But I think it'll be better

next week. Yeah, I was gonna say this this next

week might be the one word where it doesn't quite

do as much of a drop -off You know as we're immediately

on Halloween this week I thought that was interesting

Another thing, even though Gravity and Captain

Phillips both dropped, they're both still number

two and number three. And Gravity's just about

to, well, once the Monday numbers are out, I'm

sure it will have broken the 200 million mark.

So that's good. Yeah, I think right now it's

like ninth for the year so far, which is pretty

crazy. And two, with Captain Phillips, it said

it should be making, if it keeps on pace, that

eventually may make break a hundred million which

would be pretty awesome if that's the case yeah

and cloudy with the chance of meatballs is just

staying right where it's at nothing is knocking

that out of the top five yeah it's just it's

like that uh you know it's just it's not moving

i mean there's not much i would assume this week

with uh with free bird is it free birds yeah

free birds comes out this weekend At least with

another option for kids to go see we'll probably

see cloudy with a chance of meatballs drop a

little bit more than it has but Yeah, I don't

know I I could see that like you said like with

not that many other options It's like the only

thing kids are going to today the other thing

I wanted to mention is How much like 12 years

of slave is like you mentioned it increased right

now? It's only about 104 theaters, but that's

also broke it into the top 10 It's number eight

with two million dollars and they're you know

quietly expanding that more and more. So I'm

sure that's one that's going to linger in the

top 10 for the upcoming weeks on end. And if

you think about it, it's you know, it was number

eight only being in just over 100 theaters beating

out a lot of movies that were in five, six, eight

hundred, a thousand theaters. So that's kind

of impressive. Yeah, for sure. Anything else

before we move on to the headlines for this past

week? Nope. Alright, I'll pass it over to Kevin.

So what were the headlines for this past week

for movie news? Well kind of sticking with our

horror theme I want to have there's a couple

horror type headlines that we can talk about

real quick first of all The idea that there will

be a remake of Hellraiser Clive Barker to write

and Doug Bradley to return as pinhead I Honestly

had almost completely forgotten about this franchise

Really there's like eight of them. I know but

I just haven't heard anything of them in recent

memories seems like it kind of just Dwindled

away over the last four or five years. It seemed

like to me. I mean, I'm not a huge Person on

the genre. So maybe I just missed it. But yeah,

apparently getting some of the original people

back together to try to Bring that back into

the forefront. What are you guys's thoughts on

Hellraiser being redone? Sure. Why not? I mean

I watched the original Hellraiser I watched it

just a couple probably like a year ago maybe

on Netflix and I tried watching the second one

I couldn't get through it I like the lore this

is something that'll come back up when we do

the horror when we do the main attraction I like

the lore in a lot of horror movies and Hellraiser

is one of those movies that I really like the

lore to but I could always use more of it so

maybe if the remake has more of you know the

the history and stuff like that to it that'd

be awesome but i mean i i'd go see it i really

am one of those people i don't have a problem

with like a a remake or a reboot because it doesn't

the original one doesn't go away just because

they remake it so yeah um it was interesting

because in the article it says that you know

it was just a couple weeks ago where he pitched

it and then he almost immediately got a call

back that wanted him to write the script He says

in his quote there that he's gonna rely on practical

makeup and gore effects instead of CGI and that

Dimension confirmed that they are purely interested

in an R rated picture Nice. It's a lot of dead

people to get on screen So, yeah, so that's that's

the first horror movie news Dan did you have

any thoughts on Hellraiser? It's not really a

movie I'm familiar with like Mike mentioned in

the opening It's one that I think as a kid scared

me but as an adult it just some of the stuff

This like you mentioned the story holds up, but

just the facts and it just is kind of it loses

appeal and you So I've been interested in remake

sure I check it out I it's not one I ever really

had any attention interest in I always thought

the dude looked cool though, you know with pinheads,

but It's a cool -looking horror horror character

for sure Okay, then moving along we've kind of

maybe I don't know if we've talked about this

on air or not. It's kind of been circling the

internet for a while, but the sequel of Independence

Day, the big thing that came out this week was

that there was two different scripts, one with

Will Smith and one without it. If there is an

Independence Day sequel, which obviously it seems

like it is going to be, does it need to have

Will Smith or not? I think Will Smith would want

to be a part of it, the way his record's been

going. Yeah, after Earth. I think Will Smith

needs Independence Day more than Independence

Day needs Will Smith. I think it seems like the

weirdest thing to have a sequel to me But I've

heard about an Independence Day sequel for like

the last decade or more Yeah, I think I think

it first popped up once Will Smith did men in

black 2 Because he had this thing where he wasn't

doing sequels and then he did men in black 2

and then he did bad boys 2 and that kind of Just

that got everyone talking about what other movies

they would like to know of his that they would

like to see sequels to and Independence Day kept

getting thrown around in there But I mean I like

the first one a lot and what's interesting about

talking about this now is the trailer for Ender's

Game the opening of that for some reason I thought

it was like just the very opening up before they

actually tell you what it is it almost feels

like it's a almost feels like it's a trailer

for an independence day movie um just the opening

where it's like we we took the battle to them

or something like that and it's like this seems

weird my question is like is there no love for

jeff goldblum i mean no one talking about you

know i think he i mean if you're gonna bring

will smith back you gotta bring his partner in

crime back Mean fight it fight against the aliens

with a laptop. That's the key Yeah, yeah But

yeah, I mean I would honestly I'd rather see

it with Will Smith than without it I do I like

Will Smith. I think he's a charismatic guy that

he's usually fun in his movie. So We kind of

cool to see just from a purely marketing standpoint

Just to really sell that film. I mean, it was

a good film, but I think they need him I agree

that he needs it more than they need him, but

it makes the whole marketing of the film a lot

easier. For some reason, I think Will Smith,

he for some reason right now to me, he makes

me think of Tom Cruise. But see, I like Tom Cruise.

I like Tom Cruise movies. I don't really, you

know, him as a person, I don't know him, so I

have no opinion on him as a person, but I like

his movies. And I feel like Tom, like even Will

Smith, you hear some like crazy stuff going on

with Will Smith, but I don't know him, so I don't

really care about his personal life. But his

movies are really good. I like I do like going

to his movies. Yeah, I'm a Will Smith fan and

I just think, you know, when you think of Will

Smith, that's one of the films you think about.

So I think it'd be cool for him to be connected

to the sequel. I just want Bad Boys 3. As do

a lot of people. The next headline is actually

one that I'm actually really excited about. Honestly,

when we're talking about the Star Wars sequels

a little bit more sequels. Yeah, we'll call them

that I So far with this whole thing about the

the new Star Wars movies There has yet to be

a new story that has broke about these movies

that has had me worried I have been To different

different levels excited every time there's been

a new break or a new rumor or a new story about

these films. And I'm still waiting for that one

that makes me think, ah, what are we doing here?

But this is another good one. Apparently, the

writer that was pegged for the screenplay for

episode seven, Michael Arndt, is no longer involved.

And now what we have is we have a partnership

between J .J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. For

those people that don't know who that is, he

co -wrote the original films Empire Strikes Back

and Return of the Jedi. And to me, the pairing

of these two excites me. I don't know if you

guys have any opinion about that, but I'm excited

to see what these two come up with together.

I have to agree with everything that you just

said, especially the fact that there is yet to

be something bad to come out of the news for.

regarding you know the new Star Wars movies I

haven't heard anything bad or anything that makes

me go oh man this is gonna be a mess but I think

the only thing that could actually do that is

if George Lucas says oh I want to make them again

yeah I mean it started with George Lucas releasing

the Rams so then I was excited and then JJ Abrams

got connected I'm like okay and now Kazen gets

it you know connected to it and it's just building

for me because I think He did good with what

he was doing in the original trilogy Yeah, the

only thing that could ruin this is if george

lucas, uh has a panic attack and takes control

back or something Yeah, I agree with what you

guys are saying. I mean um, you know I don't

know people are freaking out because like when

you hear someone's you know Fixing a script or

you know, rewriting a script people get worried

like oh why they have to rewrite it but I think

a lot of times that's just a natural process

of things like, you know, you give a script writer

something and then The director takes a look

at it and he wants to fit his vision a little

bit more. And if you're bringing in a veteran

of this material, I think that's a great thing.

Like, you know, a guy who knows these characters

who helped create them and make them what they

are. I don't see how that could be a bad thing.

I would I love the fact that they are getting,

you know, someone who they're going back to the

original trilogy. It's not like they're getting

writers from, you know, the the equals. This

is a guy who helped make Empire Strikes Back.

So I I agree. Well, to be fair, didn't. Didn't

Wow Lucas right the first three or the the prequels

as well Lucas wrote the first three. Yeah Yeah,

but he wrote and directed all he didn't he didn't

write and direct all of them. He only directed

Star Wars And the other ones were directed by

and I think Phantom Menace and now but he only

directed a few he didn't direct them all I know

he didn't direct The Empire Strikes Back that

was directed by Kirschner Oh No, that's what

I mean. I'm saying I think he directed the prequel

movies. I think he wrote and directed all the

prequel movies. That's one of the reasons why

they were because you couldn't blame anybody

else other than George Lucas for those. Yeah,

that's true. I'm not sure. I don't know if he

directed the third one. I thought there was one

or two he didn't direct, but I could be wrong.

I'm checking that. I'm sure we will have people

comment on if we don't. We'll come up with the

answer. No, I was correct there. He did direct.

All three I don't know why I thought differently,

but yeah in anything taking George Lucas out

of it is a good thing so I Think I just met I

just you know lost major key cred there, but

For not knowing who directed a movie for not

a known who directed Star Wars 3 but To be fair

minus the I do try to forget all things that

are George Lucas in the last 15 years It looks

like he also wrote them Yeah, that could be that's

more the major issue Anyway, well, and I think

it's good that they saw a script and they said,

you know Maybe we don't quite want to go this

direction. Maybe there's something I would rather

them do that than just be like, okay, that's

it We're you know on a time schedule. Let's get

it. Let's push this out So I don't mind like

you said it's part of the natural process of

writing to rewrite to edit You know have different

takes on it. So I think it's a good thing Another

new story here, it seems like this is a week

of news about films being pushed out of 2013.

A couple films, Monuments Men set for February

2014 now and Jack Ryan's Shadow Recruit pushed

to January of 2014. Dan, what's your take on

Films being pushed out of 2013. Well, I was really

happy when I heard that Wolf of Wall Street was

not being pushed back And then finding out Matt

Monument's been is kind of makes me sad That

because I really felt that would have potential

for an Oscar contender, but if it's coming out

in March It's pretty much it said that has no

shot I hate how like the time you come out and

affects your chances at getting a movie I just

hope it's not a sign that the movie is not good.

I don't think it is I think it's more of scheduling

issue Um jack ryan getting pushed back. I think

it's probably a smart move because if you look

at christmas day and The amount of movies that

were special that were going to come out that

day I felt like it was probably going to get

crushed So and it does kind of look like a january

movie. I just I wasn't very impressed by the

trailer So i'm all jack ryan king pushback. I'm

fine with it, but Monument spend does disappoint

me a little bit Yeah, you know Again, this is

kind of similar to what we were just talking

about with the, you know, getting a new script

for Star Wars. You know, if they're doing it

to make it a better quality, which is what George

Clooney is saying, that quality mattered more

than fitting it into the Christmas time schedule.

They're saying special effects and stuff about

the film score was what really needed completed.

So if they're doing it for quality purposes,

that's fine. I think I agree with you. I hate

the fact that when something comes out determines

if it's eligible, you know, how much of a chance

it has for awards. If it was released in a certain

year, it should be up for awards. So I think

the scheduling part of the Oscars is one of the

worst things that kind of takes away some credibility

from it. But, you know, if they're doing it to

make it a better film, then I'm all for it. I

don't know, you know, there's really no other

reason to do it besides trying to make I mean,

I don't think people are trying to intentionally

get out of the holiday season. That's a good

time. I just hope they're not pulling a GI Joe

retaliation and just trying to put more Channing

Tatum in there. As long as that's not the case,

I'll be okay with it. And they're not, they're

trying to convert it to 3D. I don't think. I

think this is, I mean, that's a big, the GI Joe

retaliation thing is a big thing. They moved

that a year. This is just like two months. Yeah,

that's true. And then we have a whole slew of

comic book news. I know some of it was talked

about in Altered Geek, so we will not necessarily

try to rehash that. But starting off with the

idea of a Deadpool movie going forward. This

is coming from Ryan Reynolds and saying that

in the last couple weeks that they've taken small

tiptoes forward as far as trying to have a new

Deadpool film. Reactions on that, Dan. I would

love it if a Deadpool movie would happen. I feel

like we've been wanting a Deadpool movie forever

and especially since X -Men Origins Wolverine

though, I guess the question is like how they

would handle that would they keep it within the

X -Men universe or not, but Like Deadpool right

now that seems to be popular than he ever he's

got a trillion comics and everything. So I Would

love to see it. I think Bryan Reynolds is born

for that role. He fits it perfectly Just I don't

know. I feel like we've been hearing about like

we talked about independent state to like Deadpool

It's that like dream that people have been going

for there's those movies that we've been keep

hearing about like maybe it's happening like

Ghostbusters 3 Deadpool I don't know like I'll

believe Deadpool's happening when I'm in a theater

watching it until then I'm a little bit iffy

Mike any thoughts on Deadpool? Um, I I agree

with Dan, I would like to see a Deadpool movie.

I think that I've heard little things here and

there about it. That the script is being written

by the same guys that did Zombieland. They're

actually going to have the character break the

fourth wall. It is an R -rated script that they

have. One one interview I've heard I can remember

if it was with the writers or if it was with

Ryan Reynolds But they indicated that in the

script it basically Because Dan you were wondering

if it was going to fit into the larger x -men

universe or not that That kind of remains to

be seen but they did say in the script that it

acknowledges that x -men origins Wolverine was

a travesty for the character like Deadpool is

aware that a movie was made about him and it

was the wrong Deadpool So whether or not that

makes it like a whether or not that makes x -men

origins a movie within him like a movie within

a movie Remains to be seen but they did say that

that is in there and it kind of washes that character

like sweeps it under the rug and stuff like that,

or at least the events of that movie under the

rug. I've also heard that Ryan Reynolds is willing

to wear the mask the entire time, so it wouldn't

just be his face, which I think is important

to the character, but I do agree. I think Ryan

Reynolds would make for a good Deadpool. I've

always thought that Ryan Reynolds would also

make for a really good Flash, but I... The minute

I heard that the guys for From zombie land signed

on to write the script for the Deadpool movie.

I was on board with it They seem to get the kind

of humor that would go along with the Deadpool

movie The one thing they've been the reason it's

been slow and slow going is because it's rated

they want it they want to rated our script and

I'm kind of wondering if they've maybe Rethought

everything in light of certain other PG -13 movies

that have come out Maybe they can make concessions

here or there to get it down to PG -13 But I

know that that is supposedly like the sticking

point with Fox is that they didn't want to make

an R rated superhero movie but the the writer

and the writers and everybody they were like

we we really want to do this for our with an

R rating and it was kind of like but it was like

a budget concern it's like can we make this cheap

enough to where if it is R rated it can make

some money back or Maybe they've finally found

out how to do that. We shall see. And a couple

other comic book movie rumors about potential

films coming through. This is coming from the

head of Marvel Studios here. I'm reading a quote

from him. Apparently they have gotten the rights

back to a couple different characters and his

quote is, we're trying to figure out what to

do with Daredevil now. Punisher could show up

at one point, you know once we get characters

back into the Marvel fold We don't want to do

something right away. We want to do the smart

thing at the smart time So they have the care

they have the rights back to both Daredevil and

Punisher So let the rumor mill take off on those

two films any thoughts about if we want either

of those Films to happen Was this an altered

was this talked about in all like an alter geek

post or was this M wire because I can't remember

But I know a lot of people were saying that Marvel

or Disney wouldn't allow Marvel to make an R

rated movie like the you know for Punisher and

I know that that came up I mean, I'd be interested

in seeing Daredevil again or a remake of Daredevil,

a reboot of Daredevil because Daredevil is one

of the movies I wanted to walk out on. Personally,

of the two, well, of the three Punisher movies,

I'm going to get some backlash for this. I like

Thomas Jane as Punisher. I really like that take

on the character. Granted, I don't know a whole

lot about the comic. You know, I don't know a

whole lot about the character, but I did like

that movie. As far as like whether or not these

movies can get made I would just like to remind

some people that Disney Touchstone is a division

of Disney and they can make R rated movies I

think when it comes to these ones though, it's

gonna be kind of hard to do Maybe maybe the way

that the fans want because I don't think that

I think that if they do that they're not gonna

make them rated R and I think that because Marvel

is Huge and people see the Marvel logo or they

see the Disney logo and they think it's family

friendly. And so for them to make a Punisher

movie and, you know, they put the Marvel logo

in front of it, people will be like, oh, it's

OK for my kids to go see this. And then it might

not be. And then there will be like parent backlash.

I mean, even the original Ninja Turtles had a

parent backlash. I think that I especially think

they kind of shot themselves in the foot. I mean,

you could put Blade in this category, too. Ultimate

Spider -Man on Disney XD has had Blade in there

they've had Blade on there I'm pretty sure at

some point they'll introduce Daredevil and Punisher

because they seem to be throwing in characters

left and right I mean they've had Thor and Hulk

and Cap and a bunch of other things and apparently

if anyone cares the Ultimate Spider -Man XD is

somewhat canon with the Marvel Cinematic Universe

a little bit is what I've heard That's one of

the reasons why they're retooling the they cancelled

Earth's Mightiest Heroes was to Make the Avengers

cartoon more in line with the cinematic universe

Anyways, I feel like if you put a character in

that show and a kid and it's a cartoon and a

kid sees it then they kind of Automatically shot

themselves in the foot and they can't make an

R -rated movie without getting parent backlash.

I Think well, it makes sense. They did have that

Marvel's Knights line that they tried You know,

they did I think the only movie that made under

that banner was the Punisher Warzone that I mean

that was under Marvel I don't think it was that

was before Disney bought them. I believe that

was like there but that was but I think that

was even before Was that before Iron Man? No,

that was after Iron Man. It was that was also

still like Lionsgate and it wasn't actually Marvel

Yeah, I was it was yeah and lines get distributed

it but I think it was something by Marvel I don't

think so. I think this is I Lionsgate had the

same deal as like Sony does with spider -man,

but they had Punisher Like Lionsgate will make

the movie they just slapped that Marvel sticker

on the front of it Kind of like Fox makes the

X -Men movies and they just stick the fuck the

Marvel logo on the front of it I'm pretty sure

warzone was made by Marvel. I could be wrong,

but it came out I mean it came out the December

2008 after which was like the December after

Iron Man came out but So, I don't know it was

within that time frame But I think you talked

about alter geek I think some people mentioned

on that or in that post or something like that

that Punisher may be more suited for like a TV

show like an HBO or FX or something and I could

actually see that being a better Format for him

for that character and I think you wouldn't I

think a daredevil movie you could do right without

it being an R rated movie You know there there

are a lot of stories to pull For daredevil and

would you guys want to see daredevil in the adventures

or would you rather him like be his own thing?

I don't go ahead. No, I was just gonna say I

take him as his own thing I mean as long as there's

like you see him like someone just mentions like

I need a lawyer Let's get matt murdoch. Like

I think there's ways that you can do it And I

think Marvel and Disney have the clout to pretty

much do whatever they want with this. I think

you could do a TV show, and I think you could

bring those actors onto the silver screen as

cameos for things, and then you could just make

them go back and do their TV show. That's stuff

that I would really like to see. There was a

tweet about Agents of S .H .I .E .L .D., and

the guy was pondering whether or not... You might

not see the bigger names, you might not see Cap

or Iron Man or something come down to the small

screen for a cameo, but what about seeing Fitz

or Simmons show up on the silver screen in Avengers

2? Like stuff like that, like the TV stars go

to the silver screen rather than the silver screen

coming to the TV. Interesting. Any thoughts on

if there was a Daredevil or a Punisher film who

you would like to see in those roles? Um, I'd

like to see Thomas Jane come back has I I should

find the link to a YouTube video He actually

made a video. It was kind of him Campaigning

to get the Punisher role back He I believe he

left or he he left the second one either because

of his daughter or because He didn't like the

direction it was going. I can't remember which

one but he really liked the role I mean he has

there's articles with him where His daughter

where he talks about how his daughter was falling

asleep listening to gunfire because he was just

watching gun videos all the time In preparation

for the role. He just wanted to know his stuff

and he actually made a video a movie a short

film I think it's called like laundry day and

It is it's a subtle there's no reference to the

Punisher whatsoever Other than the fact that

he goes back into the laundromat where he was

getting his laundry done He pulls out a black

shirt with with the Punisher logo on it But it

has to basically it's the Punisher goes to the

laundry mat and across the street some thugs

try to push over a convenience store. But he

did the I think he wrote and directed it like

himself as like a I want to get this role back

kind of thing. Interesting. Dan, any thoughts

on that or someone else you would have peg for

the role? Yeah, I like Thomas Shane, too, but

I I thought I heard him recently saying in an

interview that he was done for the role, but

that could be different. um I don't know I'd

rather if you're going for that character maybe

I'd rather get like a no name or something of

you know someone who's not necessarily necessarily

famous at this point but I'd be fine with Thomas

Jane coming back I even like the guy who was

in war zone I thought he did fine um I don't

I'm not a huge fan of that movie but I thought

he fit the part okay but I don't know that's

a hard character to pull off but I don't know

that Thomas I don't know that Thomas Jane is

is uh Big like I Haven't seen him in anything

at his show on what was it Showtime HBO got canceled

HBO was canceled like a year ago, so he's not

doing anything Keeping with the comic book news

we only got a couple more headlines to go here

You kind of teased it in the opener Dan, but

Ben Kingsley says he has finished filming a second

secret marvel project quote i'm not allowed to

say anymore you're gonna have to wait and see

um any thoughts as to what this could be and

is this interesting what do you think about this

story dan uh i assume it's just one of those

one shots that they have on their their blu -ray

releases now those like short films they have

like they have the one of colson of like on my

way to get the hammer or something like that

so that's my assumption is just like his character

um without giving any spoilers away for Iron

Man 3, using his character in some way in some

short film. I don't think it's a major role by

any means, but I don't know. That's my guess.

I didn't like his turn as the Mandarin, so I

don't really have an opinion on what he could

possibly be doing, unless it's... you know he's

gonna actually reveal that he is in fact the

mandarin and it was kind of like a twist on a

twist um and but even then i think i would think

that was stupid and cry foul so uh no i i haven't

even seen the um the carter one was that is that

on iron man 3 has anyone seen that the carter

short no i have not seen that i know that that's

supposed to be Possibly be spun off into a TV

series, but don't know And the other last bit

of comic book news There's all kinds of rumors

floating around flying around about villains

that could show up in the future of the spider

-man franchise And it's the main rumor from this

article is that they're possibly building a whole

world of these villains and possibly even going

to The Sinister Six, which obviously I am not

well versed in comic books, but talking about

the possibility of Rhino, Electro, Norman Osborn,

Harry Osborn, Felicia Hardy, or the Black Cat,

Hobgoblin, Venom, those are all names that are

being thrown around. What was your take on this

article, Dan? I'm curious how that's gonna work.

I'm you know When you hear a lot of villains

are gonna be in a movie Get a little bit apprehensive,

you know a lot of people point out as a reason

spider -man 3 didn't work Well, they're talking

about building it up. So they're saying by the

article by the end of the second film They'd

have like three or four of them And then they

build it to the next film where they had the

whole group. Which I think would be a great way

to do it. And, you know, if you, you know, build

the background of them, which would be awesome,

because I heard about Rhino is going to be a

guest, not a guest appearance, but be like a

short appearance in the next one and then build

it up gradually, which I think would be a great

way to do it. Because, I mean, that's always

a huge question of like how to bring in the next

film. But if you have one kind of established

in this world and it just, I think, increases

the scope of the actual movie a great deal. So.

Or is this just a studio throwing all bunch of

names out there to see what gets the biggest

buzz on the internet before they decide who's

gonna be in each film? They could be. I mean,

there's been a lot of like things on Twitter

and like a lot of hints at the center of their

sticks So if they don't do it, I think that would

be like a huge backlash if you're gonna hint

at this I mean there was a photo of them like

at like They put out there of their production

and there's like this huge like six number there

just of them Forget where it was like backstage

or something like that. So they're putting all

these little very unsubtle hits of hints about

it So I would only assume that's what they're

doing and the fact that they already signed up

for what four movies at this point Beyond just

the next sequel. So if they're already planning

them, that would be my assumption uh i i liked

amazing spider -man uh as i said i think on the

uh my where they talked about amazing spider

-man uh last year um it did like it quite a bit

but then again i'm also a big fan of ultimate

spider -man um i don't have much experience with

amazing or spectacular spider -man but um pretty

much anything in the ultimate lines which is

kind of where the movies seem to be pulling their

material from uh recently I really do enjoy and

I'm if they can pull off the sinister six Here's

the thing a lot of this stuff is like great and

awesome and it's it's really cool and it's part

of me is still skeptical because you know six

years ago be like this Six years ago. You couldn't

tell me the Avengers would actually happen So

at this point I kind of like if they it's one

of those things where they pull it off awesome,

but it's not like I don't think they can't do

it because It's been it's been proven that it

can be done. It's just a matter of how it gets

done. And I think that Sony is one of those studios

that can pull it off. I don't know if Fox can

as well as they might think they can. But I do

think Sony can. But yeah, I would like I'd like

to see that what I would like to see is some

kind of I would like to know if there's any kind

of like back work, you know, behind the scenes,

you know. off the record talks between Marvel

and Sony and Marvel and Fox for certain things

here and there because it's I know that there

was talk when Amazing Spider -Man and Avengers

that the Oscorp building was supposed to be in

Avengers and the Stark Tower was supposed to

be an Amazing Spider -Man but the only reason

they didn't it didn't happen is because the designs

for the two buildings weren't finished in time

to trade assets So they were talking about that,

and I know that's just talking about bringing

Spider -Man into like the Marvel Cinematic Universe,

but it just kind of goes back to, you know, you

make plans, and it's nice that they have these

plans, that they're trying to make five amazing

Spider -Man movies. They're trying to put all

the pieces in place to kind of avoid what happened

with Topher Grace, or not Topher Grace, but...

Oh, what is his name? Toad... Toad McQuire. Yeah,

just kind of put pieces in place so that stuff

doesn't happen the same way that it did before

and seems like they might have a little more

care with the franchise going forward but I can't

really say I don't think something's going to

happen because at this point everything's up

for grabs. all right well that does it for the

headlines moving on to casting call i just have

one that i wanted to mention just to get your

guys take on it if you have any others you can

bring them up but the main casting call rumor

that i saw as far as being released this week

was um the casting for the principal role in

an elton john movie and the casting rumor was

that that would be tom hardy sure you think that

would work i i have no idea I mean, I like Tom

Hardy. I don't listen to Elton John that much.

I don't know. Elton John is definitely, to me

that's a hard person to, that's a hard individual

to cast somebody as because he's got such a huge

personality and so many kind of iconic things

about him. Dan, what do you think about that?

Um, as long as he doesn't sing in the bane voice

or maybe if he does sing in the bane voice, it

would be better. Um I don't know like tom. He's

a great actor like he can I think He could probably

do that role. I mean, it'd probably be the buffest

that elton john's ever been um, but I don't know

like he thinking like the The first thing that

comes to my mind is tom or hardy's performance

in bronzen, which is a very big charismatic performance

in that um, it's a very very different character,

but um, the guy can play like He can be very,

he can be a big showman for sure. So I could

see him that role working. And I applaud like

Hardy for trying to go down like a, you know,

an interesting pathway and trying to do something

that is, you know, not being forced into similar

roles over and over again. So yeah, I don't know

how excited I am for an Elton John movie, but

I did love behind the, Cannabra earlier this

year about Liberace, and I'm not really into

Liberace, so maybe it could be good. Any other

casting news that you guys wanted to bring up?

No. Going into the trailer talk, we'll see which

ones you guys saw. We had different trailers

and teasers released for the following movies

this week that I had noticed. Captain America,

The Immigrant, Mr. Peabody and Sherman X -Men

and Homefront any of those that you wanted to

bring up as something you found interesting then

Well, probably the biggest one was probably what

the immigrant I think that's the one that really

was a huge hit across everybody. Yeah, I think

that's one Yeah, I saw that I saw that shoot

all around Twitter the other. Yeah, it was huge.

So It's gonna be one of those big blockbusters

this summer, but now that movie does look good

though I'm surprised it's that's one another

one coming out like next not till spring of next

year But you know, the elephant in the room,

of course, is the Captain America 2 trailer,

which I thought looked absolutely awesome. So

I was psyched for that movie to begin with. I

love the Winter Soldier story. That run in Edward

Bredecker's run that they're adapting is like

that's what helped me get back in the comics.

So I'm all about that. And it looks like it's

following a lot of that. A lot of the major points

are there. Like the Winter Soldier looks just

like he is from the comics, though I'm not digging

the mask he's wearing all that much, but Besides

that I thought it looked awesome. I Think that's

just for the I Think the mask is just so they

can still hide who he is to the jump to the mass

audience Yeah, yeah, they did show him without

it So but I just didn't like the look of it.

It looked more like a Mortal Kombat villain a

little bit But besides that that's because of

them. That's because of the metal arm. He looked

like Jax Yeah, well, I looked like the mask kind

of looked like a scorpion like the bottom of

the scorpion mask Okay, so Scorpion is smashed

with Jax, and you have the Winter Soldier. Exactly.

I think it's impressive that Marvel is just not

missing, it seems like, so far. When it comes

to the Avengers franchise, I wasn't really disappointed

with any of the films leading up to the Avengers.

The Avengers didn't disappoint me. Now, in the

aftermath, it could have been easy for them to

drop the ball on at least one of these, but everything

I've seen so far about Thor and about... Captain

America and then what we saw with Iron Man 3.

It just seems like they They're hitting on all

cylinders and this is where we all get to decide

to disagree because I don't agree at all I didn't

I mean I thought I thought the first Captain

America and Thor were rushed obviously they looked

like it and I Don't think Avengers deserve the

nearly the praise that it got I think it's a

good movie But in order, but I think it's a good

movie. But in order for me, when I'm talking

to like my friends and everybody else about the

movie, I hate everyone is just so over the moon

for the Avengers that the only way that I can

say how I actually feel about it compared to

their like gushing about it. I have to say that

it's a bad movie because that because it's only

a good movie to me. It's not. I have so many.

Have so many problems with the Avengers and I

don't understand why it gets the Yes, yes and

no it did it actually no I will say it did disappoint

me because on Netflix or at least it was on Netflix

I'm not sure if it is anymore. They have Avengers

or ultimate Avengers on Netflix. It's a 60 minute

movie That accomplishes more and has better set

pieces. No, it doesn't. I'm sorry. Those cartoons

are horrible. They're so bad. I'm sorry to interrupt

you, but the better set pieces, I'm sorry. That's

just crazy. Okay, they accomplished still. They

accomplished more. What you can do in a cartoon.

I don't think like maybe like a little I don't

see accomplishing more all that much and like

with a cartoon. I think you have Less limitations

than you do with a movie with the cartoon you

can rely on people in filling in the backs for

a lot more you can with a movie and It's also

dealing with the ultimate universe, which is

a little bit easier to transition to then like

this more The the Marvel Cinematic Universe has

been borrowing heavily from the Ultimate Universe.

Yeah, but I would say Thor isn't because Thor

is very no. Well, part of it was because they

made him a crazy person in the beginning of it,

which I was really bummed that they didn't follow

through with, because that was a really awesome

take on Thor in the Ultimates. But I don't buy

that piece of thing. I just think that's crazy.

OK, fine. Set pieces aside, I think that they

they did more like they had. They had better

character introductions and Cap was a much better

character in like they were able to show like

the transition from Cap to like just coming out

of the ice and adapting to like modern day and

like going and finding his people. They were

able to put stuff like that in a 60 minute movie

that they couldn't even bother to find the time

to put in a two hour movie. I know what you're

talking about with that set when they go back

and they visit his past lover. You have I think

you're looking at first like that's not what

that Avengers movie wasn't trying to do It also

realized you're having that Captain America 2

movie. We have that opportunity to do that What

that what the Avengers was setting out to do

like that that it wasn't necessarily. Yeah, so

you agree There's not much character development

within the Avengers but within the development

isn't so much within the characters it's within

that team and that team dynamic and seeing that

development which there is a lot of and I I don't

like I don't understand like the idea of like

they do less When you I just I didn't care for

the story. I didn't there was that movie Nothing

could happen that movie not one moment in that

movie Did I ever like worry about something happening

to a character? But you could say that about

every action movie ever like that's like any

action movie any? Spiderman movies James Bond,

you know those characters. I've never been worried

about a character in any movie That's like never

I've never sat down to a superhero film and thought

anything was ever gonna I Okay fine, but I still

didn't like the Avengers and you're not gonna

change my opinion as people You know I can understand

you know not buying in a hundred percent to as

lofty as some people would put it But to me saying

a bad or disappointing movie. That's where I

don't agree and what my main point was bringing

up in general was that i don't think any of them

have necessarily been total flops none of them

have been disasters none of them have just completely

disappointed in my in my opinion and that amazes

me because there's been so many chances for them

to mess something up and especially in the avengers

in general just what they were able to pull off

by having all those characters and then not have

it be a complete flop which i fully intended

it to be that's what's impressive to me i think

the avengers would have made the money it did

no matter what i don't think so That movie is

so paint by numbers. It's not even funny. Wow.

First of all, do you and Iron Man 3 was I did

not like. I know because there's not a shield

presence. Luckily, Captain America 2 does. So

that's going to save today. And you know what?

Here's the problem I have now, because Marvel

Marvel, when Iron Man 3 came out and people were

like this, that the other thing Marvel came out

and said, no, they said that Captain or Shield's

presence or Shield's lack of presence in Iron

Man 3 will be explained in Captain America. And

then Like two weeks ago or two or like a month

ago, Marvel came out and said Captain America

takes place two years after Avengers. No, now

you just lost me again. I don't I just get back

on this thing with the shield presence because

I never I think that is the most ridiculous thing

ever for a number of reasons. One, adding shield

to to to the movie does nothing. It doesn't increase

character development. It doesn't increase any

type of. Stakes it destroys your stakes it this

diminishes diminishes them completely when you

add them into like this Oh, we're gonna call

them in and save us type of thing or why aren't

they there you also there's also this idea that

oh These bad things are happening. Why doesn't

she'll just show up. It doesn't happen in the

real world People just don't show up the things

so the US government doesn't show up on the present

presence under attack They let somebody else

deal with it A civilian deal with it? Not immediately,

no. They don't show up immediately. You have

those two. You have two F -22 Raptors that follow

the Air Force plot. But if something comes under

attack, you don't get something coming there

immediately. It takes a few couple hours before

you can get a jet scrambled into a location.

Look at something like September 11th. It takes

a long time. It takes hours upon hours for a

jet to get there. Just ramble. I just don't buy

tony stark having to handle deal with the president.

I don't understand how that's his problem Because

he's a superhero and he is within that trail

And if any if any hero is going to be selfish

and not call anyone it's going to be tony stark

And it's his movie when you try to bring in other

people and other things it didn't it just makes

it not his movie anymore and it's just this random

happening of people just thrown in there haphazardly,

which is what happened with Iron Man 2. You have

all this stupid shield stuff that does nothing.

That's nothing but world building. And I liked

Iron Man 2. I loved all the shield stuff in Iron

Man 2. Tell me what it does to the character

of Iron Man. How does that make that a better

movie? It fleshes out the world for me. Like

they said, that's not making it a better movie.

That's making a better universe. That doesn't

make it a better movie. So you would prefer it

just to be like... Avengers to the Iron Man chapter

Avengers 3 Captain America chapter where we just

have no it's not anything like that what I'm

I'm just saying there was they like they kept

the the they started a snowball with Iron Man

and they kept each movie added something to the

universe and the universe kept getting bigger

and bigger and then it culminated in the Avengers

and then Iron Man 3 just felt so Small to me

and that's fine because that's the type of movie

it was but that's not the movie I was expecting

and I'm not saying that they like shield needed

to have like this They didn't have need to have

Nick Fury in there. They didn't need to have

Coulson or Agent Hill All I'm saying is there

could have been a simple like like they did this

weird thing where they're like they had him calling

people and checking in like somebody could have

They could have like shown like he like someone

Like fury could have called him it could have

been like an entirely audio clip You didn't have

to see the person it would just been like one

of those things where it's like because shield

was monitoring him like heavily in the first

two and all of a sudden, like post Avengers,

they just don't check in on him at all for anything.

And I just I feel like the world in Iron Man

3, the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, like

collapsed in on itself and it just kind of started

over. And that's not what I was expecting. I

was expecting like at least for them to have

the larger picture be there and like just a phone

call from saying, hey, Tony, you got this or

hey, Tony, this is not your business. You shouldn't

do this. And then he just disobeys shield like

that. Any one of those two things either of those

two things would have like for me would have

made those movies much better because it would

have added to the world like this just the whole

scope of the universe that they are creating

these movies we want these movies to exist by

themselves but they don't exist by themselves

to me each movie informs the next one hence the

stinger at the end of all the movies they inform

what's coming or what's happening and iron man

3 just felt so Small to me in that room maybe

that works, but like to me if this is a huge

issue But it can be solved in a 30 -second clip.

I just doesn't make sense. Yes it it's kind of

like it's kind of like the way Nick Fury showed

up at the end of Agents of shield like he in

the second episode he didn't need to be there,

but him being there brought that brought that

It is so just fan service that does nothing it

doesn't make anything it doesn't increase the

character development it doesn't tell you anything

more about those characters. It's just this doorway

scene to say, hey, look, we have this guy in

this thing. You remember him? He's in it makes

it makes the world. It makes the universe bigger.

How does it make it? That's that's what I like.

We already know that they like it doesn't. The

world is big as it is. Like like I don't see

how increasing the world size you just increasing

that scope makes it a better. We need to have

a physics discussion. I mean I'm not just I mean

you write to your opinion, but I just I know

that my opinions are General opinion the general

consensus so far has been that they have Somewhat

been successful in both the pre, you know both

in all phases, you know they like to say in you

know phase one phase two phase three or whatever

so far the general consensus as far as the public

goes and and most comic book fans that i've come

in contact with they've generally been successful

so far and everything they've done and that's

what astounds me because with so many different

parts it just seems like one or two or something

should have just completely bombed fall you know

fallen flat on their face and they just haven't

done that we've seen that with other comic book

movies we've seen that with other you know other

things recently And it just seems like it hasn't

happened with Marvel. And that's what, that was

my only point. And then seeing the trailer for

Captain America, seeing the trailers for Thor,

it seems like they're still on pace to continue

that streak, in my opinion. That was my only

point. Regardless of the people that will think

it's phenomenal or the people that will think

it's bad, in general, they haven't had the bomb

yet. Of Phase 3, the Cap 2 trailer at least looks...

Like it's going to be the best one. I just hope

that Marvel keeps with the I like I love to see

more with the way Iron Man 3 did it when you

have a director who is obviously has control

over his film. That's to me is how you make a

better movie is by getting a good director that

knows what he's doing and allowing him to have

control of it, which is I think why I enjoyed

so much the first Captain America because Joe

Johnson, who is like the biggest fanboy of Spielberg,

made that into like what he would do if he ever

made a Raiders movie. I don't know. I think I'm

not even sure who's directing this the cat movie.

I think they're like TV directors two guys It's

two guys again. Yeah, just I mean Marvel's notorious

for being cheap and the directors usually you

know, they're To get the fact that they got someone

like they did for I am in three I think the people

for Captain America just you know directors for

hire, but yeah, I agree I do think it has potential

being the best of all the face three movies means

Robert Redford in the comic movie is pretty awesome

That was interesting any thoughts on the x -men

teaser I didn't watch it because it's a teaser

for a trailer It's seven seconds and I mean within

that seven seconds you can tell it's you know

a lot of cool images But I don't know it's hard

to give a full opinion without seeing I think

you got more of an idea in the scene from the

Wolverine than you did in that seven seconds

Yes, absolutely. Yeah, I agree with that. I just

know a lot of people love teasers. I'm not a

huge fan of them either, but I was interested

just to see how certain people look. And anytime

Patrick Stewart is shown in anything, I get excited.

So that's just the fanboy in me, I guess, of

him. Any other trailer talk that you guys want

to do? No. Good. All right. Pass it back to you,

Dan. All right. Well, so we're gonna take a little

bit of break here and we come back we're gonna

have a general discussion on a horror movie seems

fitting as You know Halloween's approaching.

So we'll see you in a little bit in search of

blood to terrorize your neighborhood. And whosoever

shall be found without the soul for getting down

must stand and face the hounds of hell. We have

a little bit different thing for you this week

Usually we go over a main movie or something

of that nature this week that it's Halloween

and you know, it's not season We're gonna be

taking a look at horror movies or Halloween movies

and discussing, you know What we like about them

what we dislike about them a great deal of different

things we have for you So I guess a great, you

know Foundation to start this conversation off

is now. Do you like scary movies? Do you not

like them, you know? So Kevin, are you a fan

at all of horror movies, or do you tend to stay

away? I feel like that was the scream. I just

answered that clip. Do you like scary movies?

I tend to stay away. It's not my favorite genre,

but it's not a wholesale hate of the genre. I

don't hate a movie just because it's a horror

film. It kind of leads into the second question

a little bit. It depends on what subgenre of

horror we're talking about. if it's strictly

like a slasher um film or what is there a subgenre

called splatter um slasher just like the just

the blood filled horror film then i have no interest

in it um but there's a lot of the subgenres other

subgenres of horror film that i do find some

that i like here and there or some that i really

like i just am not a big fan of of the blood

and guts type of horror film what about like

the more Classic like it might have been a more

classic But you have like the goose you know

the ghosts and stuff like that the more supernatural

type of horror Is that anything that interesting?

Well, I mean if we were if we were to look down

like the different sub genres If it's like I

said if it's a slasher film, I usually don't

go towards it if it is a Supernatural or like

an undead Type film then it's then I usually

judge it on a case -by -case basis There are

some of those that I like and some of those that

I don't like But I don't just write them off

because they're supernatural or because they're

undead some of that stuff I do like I I don't

find any of the slasher films that I like when

it comes like sci -fi horror I usually like those

a lot of like the psychological stuff. I like

some of the like Comedic horror I like and for

some reason I even though these movies are always

terrible Quote -unquote. I love movies like Arachnophobia

or even though I am arachnophobic which is weird

but movies like that where there's like a Impending

danger because there's a gonna be a whatever

killer Fill in the blank species insect bird

whatever for some reason I like those films It's

just more so the slashers or gore films that

I don't even give a chance because I know I don't

like seeing that stuff. Mike, how about you?

What is your overall opinion towards horror movies

or Halloween movies? Horror movies for me, they're

actually kind of interesting because anyone that's

listened to Off the Cuff at all will know that

I am terrified to death of scary games. like

to the point where I can't play them, but I will

watch a horror movie. I like watching horror

movies. I can't really say that I've seen, I

mean, I haven't seen all of like the paranormal

activity stuff. I haven't seen a lot of the more

recent stuff like Insidious and stuff like that,

but mainly because my wife doesn't like to watch

those movies and I don't like going to the movies

by myself. So I don't really you know get a chance

to to see any of the more recent stuff unless

it shows up on like Netflix or something like

that But I will I will give any horror movie

a shot Depending some and it's it's hard to tell

if you know I'll find something laughable or

whatnot and usually I have to find some kind

of trick to get myself through them So I don't

scare myself too much with what's happening like

for instance the first paranormal activity I

sat down to watch it and it was generally kind

of creepy for me. And I got through it because

I was trying to figure out how they did some

of the special effects. And I just thought that

I was looking at the movie from like a technical

level while still paying attention to what the

movie was actually about and what was going on

and stuff like that. But now I will I do like

horror movies because I like I like the thrill.

Like the passive nature of it I think the reason

like I don't like just it's not a movie But I

don't like going to like haunted houses around

Halloween because I'm in it like I'm a part of

it And I think it's the same reason that I don't

like like horror horror video games for survival

horrors because I'm I'm engaged with it I'm in

active participation with it. It's not like a

passive experience where it's just out of my

control I like horror movies. I like some of

the older stuff But one of the things that I

like about horror movies I talked about earlier

is like the lore that goes along with them. So

maybe we can talk about that a little bit. But

what do you what do you like? Not like I mean,

I'm kind of like with Kevin and I'm big into

like the slasher horror films like the Jason.

I mean, Halloween, I think is a little bit of

an exception. I think that's probably. Like the

godfather of them and that's probably done it,

right? But yeah, I do I do like horror movies

My wife probably likes them more than I do since

I so I get go to a lot of them similar to you

like the supernatural ones like the ones with

like, you know demons or ghosts tend to get me

a lot more than that of like a physical being

like if it's some dude like I can run away from

or something like that like I'm not as scared

about it, but Yeah, like the thinking of like

the conjuring that came out this year like that

freaked me out I'm not gonna lie and I'm a pretty

big scaredy cat when it comes to that type of

stuff Like I jump at everything so even like

I don't know why it's just like natural reaction

But I do like horror films. I do like you like

those horror films that have like a good story

or built upon themselves or You know like have

that like key character that lasts throughout

like you look at some of the greatest horror

movies They tend to have some sort of icon Like

if it's Freddy or Jason or a jigsaw Like those

characters are pretty cool and just seeing how

they evolve like how Freddy was in the first

Nightmare on Elm Street to where he was like

near the end of it when he becomes more of a

Like a joke and it's more comedic But yeah, I

do like them. I like Kevin. I like a lot of the

horror comedies like, you know Evil Dead You

know Evil Dead 2 Zombie land Tucker and Dale

versus evil. I love cabin in the woods that came

out last year So that which is kind of like a

blend of both comedy and like true horror. So

yeah, I do like horror films I I'm even I do

even like found footage or like the paranormal

activities the rec films probably the scariest

horror films some of those that are like in like

confined spaces something like completely something

uh my mind but like those that are like very

dark and you don't know where you're at like

at any time or any place um those tend to get

me but yeah i do like them i i to me like if

you can any genre really you can make if you

have you can make a good movie out of it so i

try to keep open but so yeah it seems like we

all have different takes on horror for for general

but um so i guess a good question We have some

questions here, but I think I'll just jump around

since we were touching on it. Mike, you mentioned

like some of the ones, the lore that you like.

Are there any specific horror films, the horror

lore that you tend to gravitate towards more

than others? Well, OK, I have to say that I think.

I like the Saw franchise. I think that they were

their fun movies. I think that I really like

the first one, and I think. it started to come

back around to what the first one was towards

the end. Not the very last one because that one

was done in 3D and was very cheesy and awful.

But one of the things I did like about Saw is

the continuity between the movies and how I think

the first one's by itself and the second one's

by itself. I think the third and fourth one or

the third one starts like halfway through the

second one and then the fourth one takes place

at the same time as the third one and like there's

just there was a level of continuity there that

you don't really see in a lot of movies and the

I feel like that kind of gets looked over like

as like the Hollywood sequel thing goes I think

the only other franchise that's done it kind

of the same way would be like the Fast and the

Furious franchise just maintaining a consistent

level of continuity between the things but I

did like the saw and the lore the story that

they told about Jigsaw and stuff like that But

more importantly, what I was talking about is

there was a summer, it was like 10 years ago

where my friend and I were like, you know what,

let's go read all the horror movies from the

video store. And we, you know, we rented like

as many of the Friday the 13th movies as they

had and like Halloween and Children of the Corn.

And we didn't realize that there were like eight

Children of the Corn movies. And one of the things

that I kind of noticed about all of them is I

wasn't really enjoying them because I wanted

to know more about why. Somebody was just mindlessly

killing people Like I wanted to know why Like

I understood like the the vengeance thing for

Jason. I know like the first movie is his mom

But the second one is him like it see I've kind

of like forgotten them But I've always like wanted

to know like okay, so he got his revenge. Why

does he just keep doing what he's doing? Same

thing with like children of the corn Was really

interested I wanted to know more about the book

that they found in the cornfield that kind of

like was their Bible or like led them to Believe

the things that they did is like I want to know

more about where that book came from And I never

really got my answers to those So it's like one

of the reasons why I kind of stopped watching

them because I was never gonna get those answers.

I think Halloween is one of the more fleshed

out ones, especially like the the retelling that

Rob Zombie did He kind of added in a little like

background to them, but there was this whole

like the later Halloween movies they make Michael

to be out like a basically a zombie demon that

can be summoned. I can't remember which Halloween

does that, but there's like a cult that brings

him back to life. I find it interesting that

you mentioned the Rob Zombie remake of Halloween

because I know Like, I'm not really well -versed

in the Halloween franchise, but I know a lot

of my friends that are, and a big issue they

had, I know with the original, not the original,

but his first Halloween, is that he did tell

that backstory to Michael Myers, and a lot of

people were, like, upset because they felt like

it was better left unsaid. But you felt like

it added more to the character overall? Like,

do you think that it, like... Give you more of

an understanding of where that character came

from basically Well to me yeah, because that's

what I kind of look for it's like one thing like

I sit there and I'm like I don't like mindlessly

watching people kill people like I Like I kind

of like to know why they're doing it like why

what's your motivation for killing this person?

I mean, maybe that's like a weird way to look

at it, but Maybe because I could never bring

myself to kill people. So I'm kind of like, well,

I'm wondering what could drive someone to kill

somebody. So what's your motivation for just

running around stabbing people? I just I do think

sometimes I do agree with that. Like, you know,

it's like when I think one of the first horror

movies I got into was like The Scream in the

90s and like I thought that that first one like

had a good understanding of like why things happen

the way they did and understanding like why these

people would kill all these people. But then.

I think often the case with like horror films

they kind of buy the third one things just go

crazy crazy and they're just all over the place

and they're over explaining it and they're You

know trying to make this story into something

It more expansive and like all these hidden meanings

behind things You mentioned you were a fan of

the saw films. You ever watched the the movies?

Came out in the 90s called the cube at all No,

I have not okay. It's a similar concept You actually

might like it because it is like that where you

start with the movie the cube You really don't

know they're all just in this Contraption all

these little different rooms all the different

rooms have Different traps and different things

and they're all trying to figure out why they're

there But then there is like sequels and prequels

that expand upon that lore and similar to that

of like jigsaw and saw and a lot of people look

at cube as a big influence to the to the saw

films because of just the concept of them but

that's like one of my personal favorites was

cube um one that i was introduced with by through

one of my friends and i thought it was for a

movie that came out in like 1996 it feels like

it came out yesterday um for especially with

this like low budget because it all exists in

this like all like little tiny rooms they're

all just a bunch of little rooms um and you don't

really go outside of that all that much so i

would i would advise checking that one out because

i do like finding those smaller horror films

and you know especially those that are really

good uh that i did like that uh ring is another

favorite of mine but i have not seen ring you

the japanese version of it um i have a funny

story about the ring um i don't know if the blu

-ray does this but the dvd has a a hidden feature

in it where it will play the tape You navigate

around the menu until the cursor disappears and

you hit play and it plays the tape. And then

it jumps back to the menu. And then if you have

a surround sound speaker, I think it's the right

rear speaker. A phone rings. Nice. And it really

creeped me out. I found it when I was in my dorm

room and. My friend was there and I was playing

it and I found it and I was like, Oh my God,

this is really creepy. And the phone rang and

I thought it was the actual phone in the room

because I had the same ring. And I was like,

I'm not answering that. And I, so I didn't answer

it. And so I played it again and he had, I am

his friend down the hall and said, when I tell

you to, I need you to call the room. and I ran

the movie through again and I didn't know this

and the thing rang and then the it kept ringing

because the phone in the room was now ringing

and I picked it up and of course there was a

voice on the other end that said seven days I

was like fuck and I hung up the phone and he

was laughing he was laughing his ass off and

I was like oh you jerk oh yeah I feel like of

all the films probably Ring is one that caused

a lot of practical jokes, especially with the

phone call. I haven't seen Ring Out. Actually,

it was weird. I made the mistake and somehow

I ended up seeing Ring 2 before The Ring, which

is not something you should do. But yeah, The

Ring is another one, too, that I think is really

well done, really creepy. It started that phase,

because horror is one of those genres that it

goes in interesting phases. The 80s had a lot

of the slasher films. The 90s had a lot of the...

Scream knockoffs was like, I know what you did

last summer Then we had a lot of like the ring

the grudge like a lot of those and then Saul

came out and now a lot of the torture porn So

there it is similar I mean it's so much like

action where they have certain styles that tend

to get copied over and over again And then something

new comes along and changes the game. So Kevin,

how about you even talked a little bit? How about

do you have any I know you said you're not a

huge horror fan But do you have any favorite

horror films that you do appreciate and do enjoy?

I mean, like I said, I kind of like more of the

psychological stuff, a little more like the sci

-fi horror. Some of these might not be the prototypical

horror films that people think of, but I think

of stuff like the Alien franchise to me is kind

of like a sci -fi horror franchise that I enjoy.

Silence of the Lambs to me falls into that genre,

even though some people might not think of it.

Some just kind of generic ones that I like. I

like From Dusk Till Dawn, actually. Enjoyed that

one like he's like I said before the arachnophobic

type movies Regardless of What's that you like

eight -legged freaks? I actually haven't seen

that one. Oh, it's so fun But I know like anytime

one of those comes on I just like get sucked

into it whether I'm trying to think I remember

watching one I don't even know what the name

of it was but at one point about like killer

cats It was like this old cat lady and like she

had so many cats and they were just like reproducing

or whatever and they like end up killing the

lady and like They basically take over the house

and it's just like so bad, but I enjoyed all

of it. That's I was it I Don't I'd have to like

rewatch it to like find it somewhere and like

start watching it again before I would ever know

if it was the right one or not You know just

silly stuff like tremors ha ha tremors You know,

at least the first one or whatever. So I kind

of like the ones that don't take themselves as

serious. Zombieland, we talked about as far as

the comedies go. You know, and back in the day,

yeah, I watched all the, well, not all of them,

but I watched a couple of screen movies and a

couple of the other types like that. Like I know

what you did last summer. I like Final Destination.

That series, I kind of, I mean, that's... horror

film right yeah i do love final destination as

well that's just that's another fun one it got

i i like that series because each movie kind

of sits down the rules and it's like and then

you can kind of play along with how people are

going to die yeah yeah i haven't seen all of

them but i saw like the first i don't know four

maybe four or five and i remember enjoying all

those um going along the same lines as like arachnophobic

i think like lake placid was one kind of like

that um I'm not as big a fan even though I like

those types of films I don't really like the

Jaws films that much but it's still the same

type of idea those types of films I would gravitate

towards them usually instead of like I remember

I had friends they would always have me over

for sleepovers and they would put on like Nightmare

on Elm Street or whatever and it just freaked

the crap out of me and I just don't deal well

with seeing blood in general like if I see too

much blood I'm gonna pass out I'm a wimp like

that so I try not to watch those types of films,

but yeah, those would be probably the main ones.

Very nice. I did learn the hard way not to watch

any of the scary movies with my mom in the room,

though. That was awkward. Question is, does she

scare easy or do you just get embarrassed because

she scares easy? I scare easy. But there was

some inappropriate stuff in the scary movie.

I can't remember which one it was. But my sister

and I, we were at a hotel and we were just trying

to kill time. We were like, oh, scary movie,

that's funny. My sister and I decided to put

that on. My mom was in the room too and we turned

that off really fast. But yeah, like I said,

from Dusk Till Dawn or some of the zombies and

some of that stuff I like, but I'm kind of picky.

So yeah, I don't hate horror in general. Just

not the blood and core. I guess just to run down

some of my favorites, probably my favorite, I

don't know if you would consider it horror depending

on who you are, but I love 28 Days Later. I do,

I consider that horror. Someone got in an argument

with me. I know people like don't consider them

zombies. I don't know. I still consider that

a definite horror. I love that movie. I just

love the story. some of those shots of like the

um abandoned england and like oh like that was

amazing that they were able to even accomplish

that but i make it a point to watch that every

october like i always watch 20 days later and

i even like the sequel you know 28 um 28 weeks

later um with jeremy renner like really you know

before he became big jeremy renner and i do like

that one too not as much um the one i was thinking

about recently but i earlier but i couldn't think

of which was the descent that one's a hard one

for me to watch because I am a little claustrophobic

and like you talked about being like arachnophobic

that one gets you because you're in these really

confined spaces and Even if there weren't like

creatures going after them I would find it just

like like a horror among horrors like getting

stuck and buried alive To me is just like I don't

know that would be like the worst way to go But

yeah, I also like poltergeist To like within

the like the you know, the supernatural stuff

and there are like movies like let me in and

let the right one in which are Horish they're

more drama than maybe horror but they have former

elements that I do appreciate And I do like a

lot of the James Bond stuff like insidious and

the conjuring haven't seen insidious to you But

I like what he's he's done. He's also did the

original saw which is really great And I do like

the paranormal activity movies, which actually

Probably brings me to the next point. I watched

the first one and the third one in theaters,

and I enjoyed them a great deal. And I didn't

watch the second one in theaters. I didn't like

it as much. So my question for you guys is, do

you think watching a horror movie in a theater

actually adds to the effect of it? Do you think

it's something that you need to see with a group

of people? Actually, it's probably the only genre

that I would prefer to watch at home with a group

of people. I did make the mistake once of watching

I'm not gonna be able to think of which one it

was but I remember watching a horror film on

my own at my house one time when like I was in

must have been like in middle school or fourth

or fifth grade or something and like my parents

were or my mom was gone and I watched it by myself

and I thought that that was probably the worst

decision I'd ever made because I like carried

a bat with me the rest of the night But I for

some reason I just when I think of that type

of genre I think of like getting a whole group

of friends together and like sitting around on

a couch or something and You know, then if you

jump or get freaked out, you're not as embarrassed.

I don't know But I can see how being in the theater

and listen to everybody jump or everybody scream

might add to it I just I don't go see them in

the theater. So maybe I don't have anything to

compare it to Paris what do you think? I think

okay seeing a scary movie in the theater. I think

I'd be a lot There are two ways that I think

a movie would scare me. I know that watching

a movie at home by myself, a horror movie at

home by myself, I can get scared. I know that

watching a movie in the theater, I can also get

scared. But I feel like if you're with a group

of people, there's that there's that tendency,

at least for me anyways, and it depends on who

I'm with, but to kind of start making fun of

said movie to kind of like liven the tension.

So it's not you know just you're not you know

on the verge of peeing your pants every 10 seconds

Well, I know no one's that mean to me, but I'm

just like I but I feel like there's always that

when I'm with a group of people that and it's

I can That I can interact with that way and watch

the movie in a Not not really engaged with the

movie on a level it I don't know I found myself

not to get as scared but it's when I'm by myself

and you know usually when I'm watching like a

psychological thriller is kind of or horror movie

kind of like the paranormal activity stuff where

it's at what you don't see that actually kind

of freaks the hell out of you. I don't really

think it matters where I watch that stuff I think

I can get still freaked out about it because

I'm in my headspace is where it all is and it's

like no one else is experiencing this the way

that I am. Um until everyone jumps and screams

at the same thing See, I guess i'm weird because

like because I do I feel like i'm more affected

by I think maybe movies in general to me when

I see them in theaters I guess I distract usually

because when i'm watching a movie at home And

and I have especially like a horror film if I

have the ability to like, you know Check my phone

or something to take me out of it just because

it like okay This is freaking me out a little

bit. So now I can check my phone but I won't

do that like in a theater. So I'm stuck there

like having to face it face to face. So for me

in this sort of similar to like a comedy, like

I just, I don't know, just hearing other people

react, I think enhances it a little bit. It's

like something I enjoy just like hearing that

reaction. Like it's like a comedy, for example,

like it's fun to like watch it with people because

it's much more to enjoyable to me laughing with

a group of people that you're friends with and

like sitting at home in front of the computer

laughing to yourself, you know, but That's why

I say like for me Regardless of which it was

I would rather do it with a big group of people

You know, I don't want to go with one other person

be the only one in the theater watching a horror

film or something like that I think it's for

me. That's the only genre that I would rather

have a group of Five six seven friends going

and seeing it whether it be on the couch or at

the theater Yeah, cuz actually like nothing's

you talked about like making fun of it But something

that sometimes is nothing better than watching

a bad horror movie with your friends like not

too long ago I watched I don't know if you if

you watched birdemic Which is no like the night

of terror or whatever But it's like one of the

worst movies ever made it was made to be like

an actual like horror film But it is so awful

But just watching that with my friends and being

able to comment on it and like, you know Rift

track on it was it's a really fun experience

because it's just it's a complete mess and there's

a lot of horror films that are like that really

I guess any genre but I think horror for like

Since it's often low budget lent itself to a

lot of bad movies. Like if you kill on netflix

in the horror genre, there's just all these really

crazy Outlandish just like really bad movies

Yeah, no, I I see that I think because I think

horror movies are especially easy to do that

kind of comedic commentary track with because

the characters are Characters like they're not

most of the time. They're not even like real

people It's just they're playing us like a stereotype

or something like that Which just lends itself

to even more even even being funnier. Yeah, that's

true. So To you what what does make it good like

you when you're watching a horror movie? What

what about attendance like okay? This is a good

horror movie because it's doing this one of those

elements that makes it into Like you know a good

horror film I think for me. It's it's the suspense

Regardless of what type I'm watching whether

it be a sci -fi film or a psychological one or

even like a movie like the type of arachnophobic

or whatever, arachnophobia, it's the suspense

and the waiting. You're waiting the entire movie

to see how they're going to get out of this situation

or to see how it's going to be resolved. And

that's the thing that, you know, there's a lot

of things that are the same in a lot of horror

movies and you're going to get similar parts.

You know, it's kind of like why I like some of

those lines in the original screen movie when

they were outlining. You know, this is going

to happen, and this always happens to that person,

and if you do that, that's going to happen. You're

expecting those, but how they all kind of come

to that conclusion is what intrigues me in a

bit. So I don't know, I like the suspense of

waiting to see how it's going to be resolved.

For me, it kind of goes back, you know how you

said that you like to watch movies in the theater

because you're engaged, like you can't check

your phone and stuff like that. I think For me,

it's it goes kind of for any movie Like I won't

go see a movie in the theater that I don't actually

want to see whether or not that movie engages

me or not is a completely other thing but usually

if I want to see a movie I I will go and actually

pay attention to it, but if I'm at home and I'm

watching a movie It's kind of up to that movie

to actually be good To keep my attention because

yeah, I am tempted to go check my phone or I

am tempted to go You know play something on my

computer or or just you know turn it off all

together But for me what makes it interesting

is that what just kind of makes something good

is Going back to what I talked about earlier

is just when they tell me why something is happening

and I think that's one of the it's one of the

fun things for me about like horror movies especially

like the paranormal stuff because then you get

to like learn about ghosts and hear about like

the You know like this person died this way and

their vengeful spirit and they're coming back

and they're gonna kill everybody else because

they were wronged It just for some reason it

makes that whole line just for some reason makes

me think of the movie Ghost Ship, which is a

horror movie and it has a really great opening

scene. I don't know if you guys remember that

movie. I've never seen it. Oh, the opening is

amazing. If you if you ever have a chance just

to see the opening, it's great. But like you

get you get like a taste of when they when they

kind of just tell you about something in that

in that the story is interesting. I kind of get

into it. Um, like, uh, have you guys seen VHS?

Yeah, I've seen, I've seen the first one. I've

yet to check out the second one. Yeah. I haven't

seen the second one yet either. I was intrigued

by VHS because I liked the idea of the house

with all the tapes in it. And the guys were,

you know, they were checking out all the recordings

and stuff like that. And each one was like a

little different, but I was more intrigued by,

but even in that case, I was more intrigued by

the fricking house. Like I wanted to know more

about the guy that recorded all that had all

these tapes and stuff like that. So I do find

myself getting sucked into that. But that kind

of always happens when you have like a found

footage thing. It's like you have that itch to

want to know more than what they're actually

showing you. And you're just not going to get

it because it's not that kind of movie. Same

thing with like the paranormal activities. But

I feel like one of the things that paranormal

activity has done with their movies is that they

fleshed out that spirit and that ghost and why

it is the way it Is that it is isn't paranormal

activity. Isn't it Bloody Mary? Okay, isn't that

where that went is that it it wouldn't I mean

they did that in the Third one I don't know like

I don't know if there was like a specific Like

from the last one that they did it seemed to

be very Deep into like witchcraft and stuff like

that. So I don't know I don't know if that's

Bloody Mary related. I really don't know much

about what Bloody Mary is honestly Well, you

know the you know, the idea of Bloody Mary, right?

You go into the bathroom and it's dark and you

look in the mirror with the lights off and you

say Bloody Mary three times and she'll appear

and kill you. Yeah, that I do. I didn't know

if it was like a specific type of demon or something

like that. Oh, we'll see. I don't know then.

I don't know that either. But I just I that kind

of stuff like intrigues being what people just

take like the mythology and kind of like twist

it and stuff like that. But I think an interesting

story is what gets me and not so much the Then

again, I like saw which means I kind of like

the kind of I kind of do like the torture porn

stuff a little bit like hostile kind of I don't

know. I I liked I liked hostile a little bit.

It was one of the first movies that I actually

ever previewed in a theater. But I'm not saying

that they aren't creepy or gross or anything

like that, but sometimes I like seeing that.

So it's like, OK, how much can I take? How much

can I desensitize myself to? So and still be

a human being from on a day to day basis. Yeah.

But yeah, it's it's got to be I I just need it

to be I need substance to my horror movies It

can't just be like the mindless slasher flicks,

which is one of the reasons why like I keep saying

like I just I want to know why You know Michael

Myers continues to kill everybody or Jason continues

to kill everybody like beyond just the people

that wronged him It's like how does this person

run? Sometimes they do throw that stuff in there

at least with like scream It was like, oh my

brother was the one that was trying to kill you

in the last movie. Yeah, but what so yeah uh

regarding like i think a good example of like

um sometimes providing mystery and like answering

it in an interesting way would have any of you

seen like the mist at all with uh the prank darabont

movie based on the stephen king novel i have

a really funny story about that movie okay uh

somebody call you and there's being no nope nope

nope nope they were we were Previewing that movie

and I was watching another movie the night that

was getting previewed and it was shorter than

the mist so I went and sat in on the end of cheese

and and I sat down next to my friend and You

know, it's it's in the last scene where they're

in the car and it's all foggy and everything

and they're debating over the gun I don't want

I can't I mean spoiler alert, you know fast forward

like a minute if you I haven't seen the mist,

but I sit down next to him and I and I'm looking

at the scene. I'm watching it kind of play out

and I lean over to him. I go. If he gets saved.

After this decision is made, I'm going to be

so pissed, like, keep in mind, I've not watched

this movie at all. And sure enough, like he makes

the decision and then the tank comes out of the

fog and rolls up next to him and he's, you know,

quote unquote rescued. And I was like, I got

up and walked out of the theater. Was just I

was laughing so hard really I love that editing

I think it's one of the one of my favorite endings

They actually go through with that. I get such

a like downer in such a I don't know to me. It's

a gutsy way to end that entire movie Well, I

just thought it was I I'm not saying like the

ending was funny or anything like that I'm just

saying like I didn't know what the mist was at

all and I just sat down I said if this happens

then That's crazy. Yeah And I just it's one because

it's one of those things where it's like I find

it I kind of find it amusing when stuff like

that happens where it's like if you just held

out like 30 seconds longer because that's like

the way life kind of is is like Maybe if you

had held out like 10 seconds your life would

be completely different But I just kind of I

I found it amusing that I call it and not having

seen any of the movie at all Knowing nothing

about it. I was like if this ends this way, that's

crazy So yeah, but along the same lines like

it I think a key to any horror film, like you

mentioned, having a good story or at least having

characters that you care about in some way or

shape or form, not people that are just paper

thin or characters that are just... They're as

cool things to kill I mean depending on the movie

like you look at something like Final Destination

like some of those characters are interesting

But something that as that franchise went on

it just went into like alright. Let's come up

with cool ways to kill people Which is can be

entertaining its own right, but I think the best

horror films are those that are able to like

establish Quality characters on either side of

the you know the table like something like Friday

the not Friday 13th 13th But like the Nightmare

on Elm Street like Freddie himself is a really

you know tragic character in some ways You know

he's a horrible person. It's a horrible thing,

but you know there is some tragedy there that

maybe he was unjustly Tortured by these people

Absolutely, oh well no I shouldn't say absolutely.

I didn't mean to say that I'm a bad person But

i'm a bad person. Yeah, I like that like and

then Like screams the same way, you know, some

of those characters like that I think that too

is an interesting story So I think that's a key

and like you have something like they care about

it's like oh, I you know These characters die

there's actually something to it and like aliens

the same way like that You you mentioned that

kevin. I think that's a perfect example of two

like how to Use the genre of horror in a different

genre like science fiction and you can use a

lot of those tropes and a lot of those Techniques

to increase intention and really any type of

movie because there are those movies that aren't

technically horror Like I just in beginning I

talked about 12 years of slave there are some

movie scenes in that that are straight out of

a horror movie and Shot just like that, but it's

in a serious drama So it's just I think you can

even have elements of horror in movies that aren't

necessarily qualified as horror movies Alright

anything else about the horror films or anything

else we wanted to bring up before we move on

We're just going to take a look at the coming

attractions to highlight first at the theater

releases coming up for this for the next week.

There are a couple of smaller films being released,

most notably Dallas Buyers Club, which stars

a very thinned out Matthew McConaughey, among

others. The movie Diana, I believe about the

infamous, you know former Prince of Wales princess

as well of Wales I should say but the the biggest

releases of course or Ender's Game You know the

sci -fi epic, you know starring Harrison Ford

Ben Kingsley, you know based upon the famous

novel Any of you excited at all or interested

at all in Ender's Game? You know, I just spent

one of my days off here yesterday with my niece

and nephew and she's 13 and she was excited about

it. She was very much looking forward to seeing

that. I will watch it at some point. I don't

know if I will see it in theaters or not. I haven't

decided yet. How about you, Mike? Know nothing

about the movie or the I've never read the book

either. Yeah, it's hard to explain. No, you're

fine Yeah, it's basically just this futuristic

world where kids are used as kind of They're

learning basically how to fight against an enemy

that wants to attack and like nearly destroyed

earth and there's like the Possibly chosen one

like imagine like the matrix meshed with like

starship troopers or something like that Okay

And the other two big releases are free birds

We mentioned earlier and Las Vegas starring Robert

De Niro Morgan Freeman Kevin Klein Michael Douglas

pretty much any actor that's famous since over

the age of 65 is in that movie If all those movies

anyone anyone that stricter at all your interest

in india check out los vegas or anything like

that i am uh... going for punishment so i will

go see the las vegas i don't know i'd for some

reason one of those here and just to see what

they do that uh... i am somewhat interested in

free birds but i don't get to see a lot of the

animated films when they're in theaters i know

that film was originally called like turkeys

or something like that i guess they decided to

go with free birds instead i'm more interested

to see how that does i don't know if it's gonna

do very well I think Ender's Game will do all

right. But yeah, out of those, the one I'm most

likely to see would be Las Vegas. All right.

And then finishing up with the DVD and Blu -ray

releases, really not much coming out. No really

big horror films or anything. I mean, last week

had The Conjuring, and this week all we really

have. I mean, if you want to call RIPD a horror

film, it is about people that did pass away.

And then Monsters University. Which I have yet

to check out. But have any of you seen any of

those films? I haven't seen them. Sorry, Mike.

Just to echo what Michael said last week, though,

if there was ever a case, if anyone is interested

in these two movies, these will be cheap as heck

in a couple of weeks. Four weeks, you can get

those for like five bucks. Yeah, I saw both of

them. It's weird. I will say I enjoyed RIPD more

than Monsters, I think. or monsters university

um although i i'm not gonna say that ripd was

a great movie i i went into it thinking that

it was going to be like ghostbusters means men

in black and it kind of was that except i thought

the movie was was lack it was lacking something

and i couldn't really figure out what it was

until like the next day when i was discussing

it with the guy that i previewed the movie with

and we both came to the realization that there

was no motivation for the villain or they didn't

it was one I couldn't think of another movie

recently that I've that I'd seen in recent memory

where they didn't show you the villain side of

the movie. Like, what was his motivation? Like,

why was he doing this? Like this in all of RIPD

takes place from Ryan Reynolds and Jeff. Oh,

my gosh. Tell me out here. Who's the other guy?

Bridges. Yeah, the entire movie takes place from

Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges perspective. So

you never it never switches to the villain and

you never see the villain unless, you know, Ryan

Reynolds or Jeff Bridges is looking at them.

And I thought that was very interesting because

it the movie was very one sided. And I was kind

of like, I don't understand what's happening.

But that was just like something something weird

about that about that movie, but it was fun.

It was it was a good time. Some of the special

effects later in the movie don't really hold

up. Kind of gets low budget, but there's some

really funny lines in it. Monsters Inc. It had

a couple of fun moments in it, but it's... Monsters

University had a couple of fun moments in it,

but it doesn't even come close to being what

Monsters Inc. was. Not in my opinion. Yeah, I

haven't had a chance to see them, but I'll hopefully

catch them. Like you said, if you're gonna buy

them, they will go cheap. Especially Pixar films

tend to be very expensive, even opening weekend.

So you can get it if you're really hoping for

Monsters University. You can get a cheap deal

coming up shortly and Well, just just being in

charge of the movie section at a retail store

for like nine years for the day after Thanksgiving

I can't guarantee that Monsters University will

be one of the selections but our IP PD that screams

like bargain barrel three five six dollars for

Blu -ray, you know, I mean it screams very cheap

I don't know sometimes the animated films don't

get quite as cheap But our IPD will be cheap

the day after that Stephen I guarantee it, right?

Yeah agreed. So that's pretty much it for the

incoming attractions. Unfortunately, nothing

really Amazing on either side of the coin there

theatrically or DVD and blu -ray But we'll finish

up here with our credit conversation last week.

We asked you Basically, how do you consume movies?

Are you a DVD blu -ray watcher? Do you go to

theaters? Do you? Stream like how exactly do

you prefer to watch your films as we're living

in like the digital age and Mike even mentioned

Are you part of the you know good enough generation

where you don't care? Of the quality of it. It's

just good enough for you. And so we got a variety

of different answers It seems like the people

that listen You know our do a combination of

both my personally one of my favorites if I could

find it here was someone mentioning how they

are you know they consume movies like you know

a crack dealer like you know this quick as quick

as you know quick as they can as many ways as

they can so I'm along those same lines where

but you know there's a lot of great feedback

Super Phil fan night super film fan 98 says I

consume movies in nearly every way mostly in

the theaters in streaming Occasionally buy something

but it has to be something that either want to

view the special features of or something I can

get or can't get either way, you know those I

have so many means those movies that you can't

rent or you know get on demand or something of

that nature because sometimes are those are those

films that won't you know, appear on the red

box or anything like that. So I guess I'll throw

it over to you guys. How do you prefer to consume

your movies? I specifically will always enjoy

going to the theater. It will always be my first

and best choice as far as how I want to consume

my movies. You can't see every movie in the theater.

Well, some people can. I try to see as many as

possible, but there's always those that slip

by. Those that I somehow miss or slip by, I usually

try to catch. I stupidly do this because you

could probably do it through Redbox cheaper,

but I will tend to, especially towards the end

of the year, start getting on -demand movies

for whatever it is, $3 .99 or $4 .99, so I can

watch them on my couch on my big -screen TV or

whatever. Just the movies that I missed in the

theater. I've almost given up on trying to watch

any movies as far as like newer current on like

Netflix because the selection is just not there

for as far as new movies. It's good for if you

just want to watch a movie and just randomly

pick some movie from a year, two, three, four,

five, ten years ago. But yeah, I would always

rather go see it in the theater. There's just

something, for me there's a magic in going to

the theater that I still like. I know a lot of

people commented on the reason that they don't

like going to theaters is mainly outside of the

prices is because of the people and having to

watch movies with idiots and stuff like that.

I honestly must be lucky because I very, very

rarely have a bad experience with people, but

I think it's more so on the times that I go and

how many weeks the movie's been out sometimes.

But I usually know when I can pick, I very rarely

go to a packed theater. I don't go on opening

nights. I don't go usually on opening weekends.

I'm seeing it during the weekdays. I'm seeing

like a couple weeks later on like a Sunday afternoon

or something like that. So I very rarely have

an instance where I have a bad experience because

of people at the theater. I think there's ways

that you can get around that. And a lot of, I

don't know, the theaters that I am next to, the

price isn't that bad if you choose wisely what

times you're going in. as well. So I just would

always prefer going to the theater. Mike, how

about you? What do you what do you have? Obviously,

as someone who works in a theater, you talked

about how you don't like going to see a theater

or going to a theater to see a movie that you

don't want to see. But if you have a choice to

see a movie, if you want to see it or if you

feel like, OK, I'm going to go watch a movie,

what do you tend to?
