We discuss the Spike Jonze film Her, breaking down its unique depiction of a near-future world, the impact of technology on human connection, and the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. Additionally, we cover the latest movie news, including Golden Globe reactions, Star Wars spinoff rumors, and updates on Batman v Superman and Ant-Man.

Hi, this is John Delancey and you are listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. Coming up on MYR

Weekly, we have our reactions to the Globe and

Globe winners, news on Star Wars, and our reactions

to Spike Trone's latest film, Her. All that and

more coming up on MYR Weekly. And welcome to

MY Weekly, the podcast dedicated to the movie

week that was. I am one of your hosts, Dan Clark,

and joining me as always is Kevin Optima Solo.

How's it going? It is another week in the world

of movies. Excited to be here and a lot of stuff

going on in the movie world right now. Yeah,

a very busy week for... Award season is kicking

off in high gear and we'll be getting to that

shortly. Of course It's kind of like it's a combination

of a bunch of stuff right now If you're a movie

buff, you got the award season kicking off You

got your scramble to try to see as much, you

know films from 2013 as you could you got all

kinds of top lists going out and then you got

the Combination of that with all the anticipation

of the year ahead. So it's even though there's

not like a lot of stuff Yeah, you know like new

releases be Going to be happening, you know in

January. It's not like a great time for that

But there's all this other stuff going on. So

it still keeps you excited Yeah, yeah for sure

for sure and when we get into the like the dvd

blu -ray releases like the last few weeks has

been really Sparse with the amount of releases,

but this week it's like Like everything is coming

out But for those joining us for the first time

those return visitors and those who just randomly

stumble upon us we started show with Discussion

of what we've been watching recently We'll then

move into movie news and then to our main attraction

and our main attraction for this week is bike

Jones's her and we'll finish off with a credit

conversation and a look at the recent releases

theatrical and blu -ray and DVD So to start things

off Kevin have there been anything you've watched

in the past week? A couple different things on

the movie front here first of all my roommate

and I finished the journey to through all the

Planet of the Apes films we We have now watched

all five of the original ones. We've watched

the Marky Mark version. I like that, you know,

up to a certain point you refer to him as Marky

Mark, and then I don't know what year it was,

then you start to refer to him as Mark Wahlberg.

But yeah, and then we watched the more recent

one, which is obviously having its sequel here

in 2014. So now we are both all the way caught

up. I had already seen the most recent one, but

he hadn't. I asked him to rank the films one

through seven, you know, after we finished them

all and he had the recent one as his favorite

as well. So we're definitely both excited for

the new one to come out. And then I also got

the chance to see On Demand, The Selfish Giant.

And then a bunch of films have now finally made

it to theaters near me. It seemed like... Out

of nowhere, a bunch of films that I had been

waiting for to find some way to watch are now

in the theaters near me, so I was able to go

watch Inside Lewin Davis a couple days ago, as

well as, obviously, the main attraction for this

week, Her. So, yeah, plenty of movie stuff to

go around. I know you're a big fan of The Selfish

Giant, as well as Inside Lewin Davis. And I haven't...

Know I've seen like your first draft of your

top ten list and I know it's evolving as we speak

probably But I'm interested to see once all of

a sudden done Here in a month or so what it would

look like and how you would rank all the films,

but uh, I know you really love those films I

thought they were both both really good. I thought

Inside Luma Davis had some some great acting

in that I do see what you were saying though

about about the plot As far as you know not really

being about much In a way You know, you could

say it's about a lot but you could say it's about

hardly anything but uh, I Don't know. I'm still

digesting inside the wind Davis. I don't know

how I'm gonna land on it eventually But I did

enjoy the acting performances, especially from

I'm gonna forget his name now Isaac Oscar Isaac.

Yeah as well as a bizarre performance from John

Goodman as usual Good music like you said I'm

still gonna stick with my let it go from frozen

But but definitely some good I like folk music

so some good stuff in there and selfish giant

was definitely an interesting film as well Both

these it's weird that I watch these two films

kind of back -to -back because I'm still on the

fence on both of them on how I feel Parts of

my parts of each one. I really really like and

would would want to put it in the ranks of the

best films of the year and then parts of me really

kind of is indifferent to parts of them. So like

I said, I'm still digesting those. I have to

do some more reflection and thought about them,

about both films before I come to a final judgment.

Yeah, that'll be interesting to see because next

week is when we'll finally do our top 10 of the

year. So and, you know, I did post one on the

site, but actually it's already changed as I

caught up in a few. So curious to see what. What's

all said and done and hopefully this week i'll

catch up on a few more films. So right um, so

you you you mentioned with the The planet of

the age films so would be the most recent one

be your favorite of all the films as well. Um

Well, we kind of differed in our opinions on

how we would rank the uh, the original classics

my roommate and I um The Mark Wahlberg version

does not rank high. That was a little bizarre.

And we're also in agreement there. There are

at least two of the original five that are just

nonsense. But yeah, we both agree that the most

recent one is the top of our list. I would probably

follow that with the original, the first one.

He really liked the Conquest of the Planet of

the Apes, which is number four. And I can see

that. I think I like the original one as good

as number four, if not better. Two and five are

just really strange. I don't know, have you seen

all the original ones? No, I've seen the original

and I've seen the 2001 version, Tim Burton one,

in the most recent, but I have not seen any of

the, like, the Planet of the Apes films after,

you know, the original. Would be interested to

see what your take is because there's just some

there It's a discussion for another day because

it would take a while to dissect them But there's

just some bizarre choices made and some of the

sequels that really have you're wondering what

the heck they're talking about You know, you

can suspend belief so much especially when we're

talking about a movie about Planet of the Apes

but It even goes beyond where I'm willing to

suspend my belief and just go along for the ride.

At least the second one does. But there's definitely

some interesting stuff. And what was interesting

about this was I had seen none of the original

five. I had not seen the Tim Burton film either.

My first Planet of the Apes exposure, outside

of clips and everybody knows certain famous lines

and scenes, et cetera. But outside of that, my

first exposure was the most recent one. And now

going back and watching those five, And then

watching the most recent one again, the number

of things that I missed out on by not having

seen those first five, there was a lot of things

that they did in the most recent one that really

paid their respects to those first five and that

made more sense. And I really had a better appreciation

for the most recent one after watching the original

five. Interesting yeah, I could see that because

I mean I got a few of the nods But I could see

if there is nods to the later films. I probably

would have no idea Yeah, there's just certain

certain things certain lines certain aspects

that that you're like. Oh, that's why they did

that Or certain themes that you see in every

film that made it into the newer one that I wouldn't

have even realized the first time I watched it

So it was kind of fun watching it in the in the

correct order. I guess cool cool. What about

you? What have you seen this week? I've seen

a few things a couple random odd films for 2011

that was catching up on Probably one of the oddest

films I've watched in a great deal, which is

actually currently streaming on netflix. It's

called uh The history of future folk And it's

that you know, very common story of the spaceman

who comes to earth and to destroy it But instead

changes his mind when he hears music and becomes

a folk singer It's this strange odd little indie

film. Uh, it's you can tell it's made with a

string budget Guess the best way to describe

it. It's like a John Carpenter film mesh with

Inside Lewin Davis with a touch of the Power

Rangers It's really odd. The soundtrack is pretty

interesting. It's obviously a colony and it's

I guess some people would call it very hipster

ish because it's you know ironic in a lot of

ways and whatnot, but it's it's a Creative little

film and it's good to see like movies like this

where people are just Trying to come with new

ideas and different takes on common genres it's

nowhere gonna be like make a top ten or anything

like that, but It's nothing I would never buy

but it's streaming on Netflix So if you're looking

for some odd film to watch, it's you know, definitely

there it's it's a fun movie and I think the best

thing about it probably is a soundtrack because

they do have a lot of creative songs and The

lead actors are in it Do all their own music

work and they're pretty talented so I could see

the director of it going off to make Some better

things for sure Some other stuff I want to watch

some other 2011 films. There's not a huge amount

to say about them that hasn't been said already

I saw jobs finally. I've been waiting waiting

while let's see it finally picked up on red box

and it was better than I anticipated as a coach

everything did an admirable job as Steve Jobs

He I don't think he ever truly convinced me that

he became that character and I didn't think it

was an all -encompassing biopic of Steve Jobs,

but Overall was well done. I thought Josh Gad

was really great FC's Steve Wozniak. I thought

he was a Pleasant surprise. He's actually having

really quite the year with this and frozen and

a few other things but that movie what that movie

did for me is It made me interested to see the

other movie that'll come out. Yes And it you

know afterwards I read a bunch of read up on

it a little bit and was reading how much some

of the the real -life individuals how much they

were against this version of the film and You

know, it's hard to say, you know with money and

business, you know what exactly is you know,

what exactly they feel but it seemed like a lot

of people were anti the jobs film and Felt like

the it was about the movie that's not been released.

It was a better portrayal of what was going on

So it's definitely it's definitely interesting

to that we have those Eventually probably two

films on that and to see how they stack up and

who how they're each portrayed You know, I know

Wozniak for example didn't want to have anything

to do with this film Because something to do

with this what he read in it. So it's definitely

some interesting Stuff dynamics that happen between

all those individuals, but it is interesting

to see, you know Just kind of the snapshot of

the history of the company, etc Yeah, yeah, that's

for sure and just seeing that, you know jobs

and Steve Jobs was kind of an ass like yeah,

like yeah I mean, you know, he was a genius for

sure. But as they often are they're really hard

to get along with and what's interesting too

about the Other one that's coming out to be done

by Aaron Sorkin. So I assume it's gonna be a

lot different than this But I'm curious to see

it like you are it'd be Knowing that there are

people who are closely involved that are more

with that film if it's a different take if things

are a little bit different right the other 2011

film I checked out was insidious chapter 2 I

enjoyed the first insidious and I enjoyed the

conjuring a great deal that came out this year,

which was also directed by James Wan Insidious

chapter 2 was It was it felt like your normal

horror remake. It didn't really do anything new

It it was a little bit more goofy than the last

one I think it relied way way too heavily on

jump scares and its score like I felt like every

three seconds It was just like a jump scare jump

scare jump scare and the characters weren't really

all that interesting this time around So I was

a little disappointed in that and I'm not super

disappointed because I didn't really hear great

things but I love the first one, and so I'm glad

James Wan's getting out of horror. Not that horror's

a bad genre, but I'm just curious what he can

do with something like Fast and the Fury 7, whenever

that comes out. And just to finish things up

here, I won't say much about this, but last year

I went through all Steven Spielberg's movies

and did reviews of them. This year. I'm hoping

to do the same thing with Scorsese. So I started

with His very first film which was who's that

knocking at my door? Which was a student film

that he made and that was later adapted and adjusted

into like a feature -length film And you can

kind of tell that it does feel like a student

film It's also the debut of Harvey Keitel and

he's still not the actor that we know today.

He's finding his his His legs under the ham for

sure. I mean there are moments of greatness for

sure. There's uh Some dialogue, you know Scorsese's

trademark use of music is in there as well You

can tell the influence from like the french new

wave and italian cinema that had on Scorsese

But it just actually is kind of what and it's

needed It needs a really big editing job for

sure and it feels really disjointed because all

these separate pieces were added later to kind

of Build it out a little bit and they kind of

come out of nowhere. So for a first effort I

mean, it's amazing. But if this wasn't Scorsese's

film, I don't think anyone would ever be talking

about it. It's kind of it's just like, you know

a Decent student movie. So it's nothing really

all that amazing So unless you're like a Scorsese

purist and you just want to watch everything

that he's ever done It's really no need to see

it. I think there's but I'm curious just to kind

of get more in depth with that later on so But

yeah, that's pretty much all I've been watching.

Anything else before we take a break here and

go into news? Nope, I think that's it for this

week. Alright, we will take a break when we come

back. We have some news to go over, including

the recent winners of the Golden Globes. We'll

see you in a bit. Pixels in the animation is

wrapped on the Super Mario Brothers Super Show.

Now, TFJ and Mike and TV's Mr. Neil head to Hyrule.

That's right, listeners from episode 16 through

episode 20 of PETA, pain in the ass. We will

be covering all 26 episodes of the Legend of

Zelda cartoon. Excuse us, podcasters. You can

catch Pixels in the Animation every Wednesday

on iTunes and www .geekcastradio .com. Excuse

me princess All right, and welcome back we are

gonna start the news like we always do with a

look at the box office It's actually been a little

bit since we've done this. I feel so I don't

know I feel like we've it's like returning to

an old friend or something like that because

it's been such a long time a lot's changed and

we Looking at number one for this year in Not

this year, but this this past weekend, which

was a lone survivor and it looks like it might

be Starting 2014 off on the right foot. It's

coming in with 38 million, which is a lot higher

than anticipated Technically, it's the first

weekend. It's it's been out wide It's been out

a little bit a little bit like a little bit in

a few cities But this is the first weekend really

people have had the opportunity to see it and

coming in number two like those Like we've seen

with all those family films and all those Really

good Animated movies frozen is still there coming

in with 15 million and rounding out the top five

You have the wolf of wall street with nine million

legend of hercules the other Big opening of this

weekend making eight million, which is eight

million more than I anticipated it making it

No, I think it make it in the top five and in

number five the American Hustle and then actually

Hobbit still there at number six both of those

made around eight million and Also opening wide

this week. Yeah, Austin's was a county with seven

million dollars So a few films in there that

are opening wide to pick your releases So any

surprises there with that with the top films?

First of all, I feel like we cheated frozen because

you know We talked a couple weeks ago how we

figured it might stay number one over the holiday

season Then we'd have to kind of watch and see

how it did over those last What would it be the

last I guess a couple weeks and then we didn't

ever have episodes where we were looking at the

box office I I never got to check just on my

own to see if it was number one though I know

it was number one last week I don't know if it

was number one the week before that as well like

we kind of thought it might be But it obviously

has enjoyed a stellar holiday season into the

new year with double in its budget so far. And

we'll see how long it sticks around. I am a bit,

I shouldn't say I'm a bit surprised that Lone

Survivor is number one. There was a lot of buzz

around this. A lot of people have been excited

about it. I just can't seem to get myself excited

for it. But I'm not really surprised that it's

number one. Legend of Hercules being in the top

five That's pretty much yeah, that's the you

know the headline to that is But I guess at the

same time We are looking at what I guess could

possibly be one of the first even though it is

in the top five We're probably looking at the

first box office bomb of 2014 because If that's

what it opened with That is a long steep climb

to get to its budget Yeah, this budget of 70

million which I am surprised by and it was that

much I mean it's gonna have to do exactly what

it did this week for a couple months and I Don't

see that happening. Um American hustle sticking

in that number five kind of surprised me a tiny

bit But I guess it is, you know, gearing up for

awards season, so a lot of people are trying

to maybe watch that one, you know, Wolf of Wall

Street, a similar situation where maybe some

people are trying to get in and watch a few of

those. What is interesting though, if you look

at it, normally we don't have much of this, but

there's about three or four films here that actually

had an increase in theater count, but dropped

in their gross. American Hustle being one of

them, it went into 111 more theaters, but dropped

30 % of the box office. um saving mr bank's uh

paranormal activity also had those uh types of

things happening with them and uh the biggest

drops of the week 65 drop for paranormal activity

the marked ones and um after that it's probably

you got to look down to 63 for grudge match or

69 basically 70 drop for 47 ronin which i guess

if we're talking about box office bombs that

would have to qualify Yeah, for sure in the last

week we talked about the movies what movie made

the most in the year and actually what was our

math read last year, but that's been surpassed

by By Hunger Games catching fire though. I don't

know if it counts since it made it in 2014 So

I don't know I guess I don't know the rules for

that because it seems like once 2013 is over

it shouldn't be done But maybe you get to keep

making it as long as you're out and just because

you're released in 2013 you still qualify I guess

I guess that must be the case because yeah, it

has surpassed Iron Man 3 now, I guess according

to the box office people I didn't ask you obviously

besides Legend of Hercules. Was there anything

that surprised you amongst the the box office

this week? I mean Lone Survivor making as much

as it did. It's not a huge surprise I mean, there's

not much out but I am surprised that the Waffle

Wall Street is still in there making like nine

million dollars Did you think it helped that

there's all of a sudden all this backlash about

it? Think too I think so because there's a lot

of curiosity of what you know, what exactly is

is all the talk I think that that is helping

it a good amount too. And I think a lot of people

were hesitant to see it because of the runtime

so I Think Scorsese fans are coming out and you

know checking it out. Maybe not an opening weekend,

but eventually so and with it being award season

It's probably gonna be in a lot of theaters,

you know, and there's not a lot of competition

out there. I mean the Paranormal activity from

the mark ones is one of those one and done. That'll

be gone pretty soon You don't survive. Hercules

will be gone after a week or two. Yeah, I'm sure

loan survivor what we'll have a pretty good run

here because there's not a great amount coming

out in the upcoming weeks, but Definitely me.

I mean it made his budget back in one week. So

a successful thing there. I guess I'm just around

out the for me what is kind of sticking out of

some of the bombs or what will be bombs I'm predicting

Legend of Hercules does not make its budget we

talked about oh gosh what was the other one I

just talked about that's not going to come close

and there's a couple out there Besides that that

you could have kind of predicted and maybe one

that you couldn't grudge match is gonna not make

its budget back Which is not a surprise I don't

even know how I had that big of a budget, but

I am a little bit surprised as to the secret

life of Walter Mitty how Kind of lacks that was

as far as the numbers go. I'm not saying making

50 million dollars is a slouch, but that's only

over halfway towards its budget, which again,

it's not going to hit. So we have quite a few

films here that we're talking about that are

definitely not, you know, 47 Ronin was the other

one I was just thinking about, you know, and

all these other ones that are just not even come

close to their budgets. Yeah. And I think the

Seagull Life Ultimate, I just got crushed with

the crowded holiday season. Yeah, we're talking

about, you know, it came out at the same time

with Wall Street American Hustle and Save Mr.

Banks, a lot of these and it just... didn't stand

up to those apparently. A couple of milestones,

I guess, if you wanted to look down at that.

American Hustle is now over the 100 million mark.

So that happened since the last time we've talked,

obviously. So that was probably the biggest milestone

on the list today. Anything else that struck

you about the list overall? No, nothing really.

I think we pretty much covered it. So I think

I can go ahead in. You want to run down this

past weekend's headlines? All right. Well, obviously

the place where we should start probably is the

Golden Globes that just obviously aired as we're

recording this. We just got done seeing all the

winners, et cetera, and just kind of breaking

down the main ones as far as relating to movies.

And again, can I just preface this whole conversation

by saying I still have absolutely no clue how

films qualify for certain categories I don't

think anybody and it was funny that Leonardo

DiCaprio even Made some mention to it when he

was talking about His win what would be his win

in best performance by an actor in a motion picture

comedy or musical he's like I can't remember

word -for -word what he said, but talking about

how He didn't realize he was a comedian or he

was proud to be in this category with so many

known comedians like Christian Bale Phoenix it's

just like I I don't know how any of those movies

are comedies musical. I get the dramas are dramas

like They all fit the drama category, but the

comedy or musical I don't get it. Anyways, um

best film went to 12 years of slave for the best

motion picture drama Comedy or musical goes to

american hustle? Uh best performance by actor

in a motion picture drama was matthew mcconaughey

for death dallas spires club cable and chet for

blue jasmine, um For the same category on the

female side. Uh, amy adams american hustle for

comedy or musical. Like I said Leonardo DiCaprio,

Wolf of Wall Street for the actor in the comedy

or musical. And then for supporting we had Jennifer

Lawrence in American Hustle, Jared Leto, much

deserving in Dallas Buyers Club, director Alfonso

Cuaron for Gravity, Best Screenplay Her for that,

and then Best Animated Feature. There's only

three nominees and that went to Frozen. Interesting

best original song actually went to Mandela long

walk to freedom not frozen or inside Lou and

Davis What were your thoughts overall? I mean

the thing that I kind of took away from it was

it how spread out all the awards were I mean

American Hustle led it with only three Which

is kind of crazy. I mean gravity wins best structure,

but doesn't win best picture, which usually doesn't

happen The original song thing I was really surprised

by I think it's just because they like you too.

I Don't know how you don't give that to I mean

that doesn't that was probably the bow and hand

moment of the night but it's weird calling McConaughey's

when a Surprise since it was such a great performance,

but I was surprised by it And I loved his acceptance

speech I heard someone I saw someone mentions

like Matthew McConaughey does the best impression

of Matthew McConaughey It should I thought he

was gonna get up there and start doing the The

scene from freakin wolf of Wall Street the wave

started off. I thought what is going on right

now Were you interested to see that Dallas Buyers

Club swept for? Both actor and supporting actor.

Yeah that that wasn't that I was not expecting.

I I didn't think it would win either honestly,

I thought I'm for supporting. I thought I'd go

to Fassbender maybe parole and I thought for

leading I thought it was sure tell or maybe even

Redford or You know, I didn't think McConaughey

would take it But I mean, I think like like I

said, I I don't think it's a wrong choice I went

through the whole show Well, I got home about

and it was already into that I was already about

an hour into it But I apparently I mostly just

missed the television portion of it because I

saw most of these in the film category ones.

And I went through the whole one thinking that

somehow we were going to get through the whole

award show with 12 Years a Slave not winning

anything. And I was very kind of confused. I'm

like, man, 12 years? Because I thought maybe

Steve McQueen would win possibly for director,

or every time there was one. Somebody up for

that movie. I thought for sure it's gonna come

away with something that came down to the last

last category of the dates for it to get its

Award there with best motion picture drama, which

I guess is a good one to get but I was definitely

worried for a minute that that wasn't gonna get

anything Yeah, I was it's weird when you think

about it that Dallas Byers Club has more awards

than 12 years a slave And I was surprised at

the amount of love for American Hustle I wasn't

too surprised because it is the the Hollywood

Foreign Press and they love stars So I I thought

I those were some of the awards I predicted predicted

correctly Like I thought Amy Adams would win

and I thought Jennifer Lawrence would win not

necessarily I think Amy Adams is deserving but

I I think it's a big part of it because they

love those actors and the wine scenes are the

ones behind those films and they know how to

press and how to campaign So I think that's a

huge part of it. But interesting that obviously

one of the films we're going to be talking about

later in the episode as our main attraction,

her obviously had a number of nominations. Kind

of brings up a discussion, though. Do you think

it hurts or helps a film to come out as late

in the game as it did now? I know it had been

out as far as, you know, the critics and all

the different award circuit, if you want to say.

has more time to watch it but do you think as

far as its actual uh mass release that it has

anything to do with how a movie gets received

for these awards it's hard to say i i don't think

so overall but i do think if you wait too long

it you can you'll get stuck in that crowd and

some movies you work out really well and some

it doesn't like something like osage osage county

i mean they got some nominations but that Got

thrown under the rug. No one's really talking

about that movie because so much, you know You

have american hustle you have wolf of wall street

all those other stuff. So I I Think if you're

the right film it can help you but I think if

you're the wrong film you can get just buried

But beneath everything else so because i'm not

trying to say anything about bad about Leonardo

DiCaprio But I don't even think you can compare

his performance in wolf of wall street to walking

phoenix and her No, they're I I can understand

how you can call wolf wall street a comedy. I

don't see how you can call her a comedy. So yeah

I Mean it's funny, but I don't know. I just think

like his performance I think from walking Phoenix's

performance in her I don't know. It's kind of

jumping the gun because we haven't talked about

it yet, but I Like to me, I don't know. I'm trying

to fathom how the she doesn't win that award,

but I Mean he's basically I mean not yet. He

does have some other actors involved and whatnot,

but that is a whole lot of just him by himself

And I don't think a lot of people could have

pulled that off like he did. Yeah I guess you

could say the same thing for like Sandra Bullock

or yeah, Robert pressure to us. I don't know.

Like I said, I think with the Hollywood foreign

press I just go with the biggest star Sometimes

it's like I was surprised to see Jared Leto win.

Yeah, that's true you know, when you have like

a Michael Fassbender or Bradley Cooper who are

basically, you know, very much in the now, you

know, they are on everybody's, you know, mind

as far as actors go these days that, you know,

so I was surprised to see him, but I'm very happy

with that. That's probably the one that made

me the happiest was seeing him get that award.

Yeah, for sure. It's definitely well -deserved

so I don't think there's anything besides the

original song that I thought oh wow That's a

horrible choice, but it's it's also interesting

now. I know you probably don't have this problem

very much, but in previous years, I you know,

I'd have a lot of times where I hadn't seen half

the films that were getting nominated for or

winners or etc, especially certain years, but

You know, maybe it's because of us doing this

or whatever, but there was very few films on

Involved in this that I hadn't seen yet. I mean

there's a handful for sure But it's much more

enjoyable when you've seen night, you know 80

% of the nominees Yeah, I still haven't seen

film, you know it yet. Yeah, so that that I'm

curious to check out Anything else about the

Golden Globes? No, that's pretty much it for

me. Alright, well then getting into some of our

headlines. It is all about superheroes with one

exception. So you might have missed us over the

last couple weeks, so let's get you a good dose

of superhero headlines. First look at Ben Kingsley's

The Mandarin in Marvel One -Shot entitled All

Hail the King. Entertainment Weekly basically

revealed Story there that the short will focus

on Ben Kingsley's Mandarin. It's gonna call be

called all hail the king Spoiler alert, I guess

if you haven't seen Iron Man 3, whatever I'm

not too concerned But obviously the Mandarin

twist was one of the most talked about divisive

things that happened in the 2013 cinema And now

there's a 14 -minute short apparently that's

gonna be written and directed by Drew Pierce

who co -wrote Iron Man 3 And it's going to pick

up with Trevor where he left off after being

uncovered by Tony Stark and it follows him as

he's locked up in a maximum security prison.

What are your thoughts about the existence of

this short in general? Interesting. I don't know

if you've ever watched any of the shorts that

Marvel has put out. I've only seen a few of them.

I haven't watched them all. 14 minutes seems

pretty long. They're not usually that long for

what I can remember. But I know a lot of people

hated that twist. I was all for it. And I liked

the character, Trevor. I thought he was pretty

humorous. So I'm definitely going to check it

out. I mean, I'd probably be buying the Blue

Ray anyways. But I think it has potential just

because I thought Penn Kingsley was pretty fun

in that role. All right, yeah, I'm gonna check

it out too. I thought that I like you I was in

favor of that twist I didn't see it come in and

I appreciated it Yeah, I can understand some

people being upset because they really like the

Mandarin as a character They thought he could

have been this really intimidating kind of badass

character But it's nice to see somebody flip

the script every once in a while And we're going

to try to cover all the different franchises

here. So let's get into another franchise, which

would be the X -Men franchise. Brian Singer says

X -Men Apocalypse will cover mutant origins and

will be set up by Days of Future Past. So basically,

he says, on the story produced and negotiated

to direct, we're figuring all that out. He says

that Days of Future Past may or may not contain

an overt tease for the follow -up X -Men Apocalypse.

But something that happens in this movie causes

what's going to happen in apocalypse So there's

gonna be something there and then the other part

of the article is talking about that. It's gonna

address the historical mutancy mutant origins

things like that, so Not that it's hard for me

to even start thinking about X -Men apocalypse

or anything about that I don't even know if I

want to about that because for me I'm I got my

attention when it comes to X -Men has on days

of future past and how epic that looks, and I

would just like to enjoy that before I have to

think about what's coming after. Yeah, yeah,

I definitely agree. I'm not surprised. I think

this is the way I expected them to go, because

it would make sense if they're doing a time travel

film and then bringing an apocalypse that they

would touch upon, like the Age of Apocalypse

storyline. And if they're going to talk about

Apocalypse, he is the first mutant, so I would

assume they would go with this, getting into

the history of mutants and whatnot. So yeah,

I think it's more so just confirming what everyone

assumed at this point. Kind of an interesting

side note on the article about the casting of

a different actor playing the toad than we saw

in the first installment of the franchise. Don't

know if you caught that little bit at the end

I'm not familiar with the the new actor that

will be playing toad and replacing Ray Park That's

I guess for people that are obsessed with X -Men

they might find that interesting yeah, I didn't

think they'd be towed back, but hey, you know

it He's one of those oddball characters for sure.

Yeah Let's see, where do we go next? How about

talking about Ant -Man a little bit? Now, people

well -versed in the comics will probably appreciate

this more than I can, but talking about, you

know, we have already learned about Paul Rudd

and his involvement into Ant -Man, but I guess

the thing now is, and the rumors and the speculation

is, although he's converted, he said what the

alter ego would be that he was linked to, and

would it be Hank Pym? Or would it be Scott Lang

etc. I don't know. Are you familiar with Ant

-Man at all? Well, I mean I do know Hank Pym

is the originator of Ant -Man he you know founding

member Scott Lang kind of came not too long ago

actually a few years ago and he It's more like

just a random shield agent from or something

and maybe not shield agent But some random guy

that found the suit became a hero and he's more

He's more of a criminal turn turn good. I guess

you'd say and knowing Paul, right? I would think

it's more likely Scott Lang because Hank Pems

is mad, not mad scientist, but the scientific

genius and doesn't really see something like

Paul Rudd would be all that fantastic at. But

hey, if Robert Downey Jr. could do it, maybe

he can too. So I don't know. But it'd be interesting

to see what all the listeners think as far as

who they would rather see or maybe number one,

who they would rather see and number two, who

if they agree with you, who Paul Rudd would be

better as. Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing

that as well. All right moving on to our next

super hero franchise I think we should just make

this a segment, you know, we have our headlines

We have our casting call our trailer talk. We

might as well just have Batman versus Superman

section Possible rumor here that there might

be more than one villain for Batman versus Superman

as well as some information on a Wonder Woman's

role in the film this is all coming from a Batman

on film site site apparently has a lowdown on

the new film claims that not only will Lex Luthor

be featured but that he won't be the only villain

to appear and it's also saying that the film

is truly a Superman film not quote -unquote a

Justice League film or you know a combination

ensemble film or whatever and it's also saying

that Wonder Woman will more likely be an extended

cameo Much like the character of Black Widow

was in Iron Man 2 What are your thoughts on any

of this or are you just done with rumors about

Batman and Superman? Yeah, I'd be grateful if

they would just officially cast someone in something

I'm glad about the Wonder Woman stuff because

I that was kind of the worry was it's just too

much But if she's just like an extended cameo,

okay, I could I could see that So yeah At this

point, it's hard to say anything because subwatch

is being thrown at this movie that uh, I don't

know it's It's sounding like they're kind of

they're getting sick of it too because we're

like, you know what? It's superman. It's not

just like it's a superman movie trust us, but

Yeah, we'll find out And I'm sure we'll be talking

about it again before it happens. Moving away

from all the superhero stuff, let's talk about

some Star Wars like you teased in the opener.

If you remember back last year or so, about this

time, almost a whole year ago, where Disney had

confirmed that it not only would be moving on

with, you know, like Episode 7, Episode 8, etc.,

but that along that same line, it would be working

on a number of standalone movies. As well as

kind of like spin -off character pieces, etc.

Which you know, we've talked about on different

podcasts, etc. Interesting news article that

came out. recently was with director John Schnapp

claiming to have the inside track on Disney's

upcoming plans. The Metalocalypse director was

speaking to AMC Movie News. He was asked about

it and he straight up said one of them is Boba

Fett. It is. I know. I know for a fact. I will

never reveal my source. This is all quotations,

but it is the one written by Lawrence Kasdan.

So who knows if that's if he's right wrong or

whatever what his inside track is but I guess

it would make sense to me if you were going to

do these spin -offs that a logical place to start

would be with Boba Fett just because of the fandom

behind him. Regardless of who they start with,

for some reason I'm really behind these standalone

films because I think the Star Wars universe

is so immense and there's so much there that

in this type of franchise these standalone movies

would work. Some other franchises could not do

this, but I feel like this one could. What do

you think? Yeah, I agree there's the Star Wars

universe is Gigantic and part of it just because

there's so many worlds combined It's like 4 ,000

Marvel universes put in and then you have like

the Old Republic stuff you have it's just just

expansive history That's insane. So I agree.

There's so many characters that you could take.

You can make up a character and put them in the

world without even referencing any of the other

stuff. So I agree. And Boba Fett, like you said,

is a logical starting point because he has a

fandom. People want to know more about that character.

So I'm sure if they're going to do one of these

movies, they'll do something of that nature.

I've heard different like Jedi. ideas and whatnot,

too. Well, like you said, there's so many different

ways you can go. You can talk about, you could

have a standalone movie about one of the, you

know, dozens and dozens of Sith, you know what

I mean? That have only been mentioned or in a

book or et cetera, you know, that have never

had any on -screen time. You could have, you

know, Dozens of dozens of Jedi that you could

talk about you talk about something, you know

with the rebel alliance you talk about Bounty

hunters you could talk about, you know any inhabitants

of some random planet, you know Ewoks or Wookies

or whatever. So you're right. There is so many

things So many directions they could do where

it's not gonna seem like you're stretching. It's

not gonna seem like you're It all just seems

to make sense and another reason why I would

think Boba Fett would be an ideal choice was

because honestly You didn't really have you it's

not like you're taking a character that we got

you know, a ton of exposure to in any of the

films. His moments in the original trilogy are

very brief, which is, you know, a long talked

about aspect of the Star Wars franchise. So it

makes sense too, because you don't get to see

a whole lot of him. So he was kind of this mysterious

person. Granted, they did touch on that in the

the prequels, et cetera. But I think seeing him

in his adult form, so to speak, and how he comes

to fame as a bounty hunter maybe would be a way

to go. And I would definitely be on board with

that. I think, too, it's a good job of complementing

what you have going on with the regular movies.

And I think, I mean, if they do everything right,

they could be looking at the success that beyond

what even Marvel has seen with the Avengers.

Yeah, it could become its own genre, just like

the Star Wars genre. So got its own television

channel They have WW you can have their own television

channel anybody can yes, I would welcome Something

like that over WWE Anyway, so that does it for

the headlines. Let's get into a few of their

other section. Just very briefly. We have a one

We have no delays that we that we had break this

week, but we do have a sequel remake story here

and the headline reads Gerard Butler to star

in point break remake Point break remake. So

yeah a report about jarred butler being in discussions

to play The same character that patrick sways

he did in a movie that according to this article

is basically going to be the exact same film

thoughts I guess jarred butler just loves his

serving movies. I Was not expecting that I feel

like they've already remade point break and they

called it fast and the furious But I don't know

it It's not like it's a movie. I hold in high

regard. It's a fun movie, but it's nothing fantastic.

So I Just don't get the concept of okay. I get

certain things are gonna be remade especially

like if you can do it with the Technology that

we have, you know, and we talked about this before

a little bit like, you know, okay I get you you

remake Planet of the Apes because you can actually

do what they did with this last Planet of the

Apes, which was ridiculous Or some of these other

science fiction films, but I don't understand

like okay Well, and on the same side I also get

that you're trying to take advantage of people

that you know grew up with this stuff that are

now older that would Be interested But when you

take these just random like films that weren't

even that popular or that great to begin with

I Mean I'm not trying to hate on point break,

but like it's just like taking like it's the

science fiction was like, okay, I get like You

know, you might do something like a huge franchise

like aliens or Terminator or something like that

but when you're starting to do like freaking

time cop or you know total recall or just some

of these more random ones I just don't get how

they think that's gonna be successful And Point

Break is such a movie of the time. It's, you

know, the extreme sports era. It's very much

a 90s movie. So trying to, you know, do that

in today's world, I just I don't know if it's

going to be as effective. It's like you said,

like a timecop or a movie that's very much of

its time. I don't know. It just it's it's I think

of like something like the Robocop movie that's

coming out. It doesn't feel. Special it just

feels like just a movie coming out that has a

Robocop title to it, but right You know I get

certain remakes. I'm not just anti remake and

anti see you know reboot anti sequel I know a

lot of people are just against all things that

are of that Nature I'm not like that. I'm for

it if it makes sense, but a lot of times it doesn't

make sense So yeah, moving on, casting call,

we got a couple different things, one for a director

and one for an actor. Apparently Dominic Cooper

has confirmed that he will be involved in the

Warcraft film. His name had not been necessarily

cemented, but his quote, I'm going... off to

do a film called Warcraft. So I notice how it

gets more concrete than that. And he talks about

the project being massive and exciting. According

to him, it's a really good script. Of course,

everybody says that about the films that they're

involved with and that it's going to be a long

shoot. I really can't say too much about this

film one way or the other, but I could see it

being a visual, an entertaining visual piece.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I've never done Warcraft

in any way, shape, or form, so I really can't.

I never was a big MMO guy. Right. But I liked

the director. I mean, he didn't move, and he

did source code. So Duncan Jones, I'm sure, if

anyone can make a video game movie good, it'd

be him. For sure. And at least it's something

different, unlike the Need for Speed slash Fast

and the Furious. Anyway, and I brought up plan

of the apes and there's a article here about

a possible The confirmation for the director

of the third film in this newer Series of films

here and that will be Matt Reeves who is also

The one that is in charge of Donna the plan of

the epsilon that will come out this year. So

apparently that means that He must have done

something right in this film according to the

studio for him to be rehired to do the sequel

as well. So that's interesting. He will co -write

the script with Mark Bombeck who also rewrote

the Dawn script with him after they replaced

Rupert Wyatt. Any thoughts of, are you familiar

with him at all or do you think it's good that

we're having some continuity between the writer

of the second one and the third one even though

obviously we can't say if he did a good job or

not on the second one yet. Yeah, I guess it's

at least a good sign that they trust him enough

to come on board for the third one. I mean, I've

seen Cloverfield, which I do like a great deal.

And he also did Let Me In, which was the remake

of Let the Right One In, which I thought was

actually a really good movie. I mean, it obviously

was a remake of a foreign film. So some people

had knocked on it because it was so similar.

But I thought he did enough to make it his own.

So I do like everything he's done up to this

point. And obviously, without seeing the new

Don and the Apes movie, it's hard to say, but

from what I've seen so far, it looks pretty good.

So definitely. Yeah, definitely interested to

see how the second one plays out and maybe then

I'll have a stronger opinion on if he should

be involved in the third one or not. But high

hopes up to this point. So that does it for the

casting call. The only other part of news we

have would be trailer talk. There's been a lot

of different extended trailers or new versions

of trailers or just. First look trailers for

a variety of films nothing from like anything.

That's just a huge like a big name film so to

speak But out of the whole list of films that

have had trailers released what struck your eye

this week? Honestly, not a great deal. Like you

said, there's not a it's not a great week for

trailers the Indie comedy Dom Pioti look interesting.

It looked rather It looked like it could be good

it It's hard to really get a sense of what it's

really about but it it uh, I don't know So I

like the answers that are in it and it looks

so odd that it might be funny also finding or

sorry fading to go which was Woody Allen coming

back to act in a movie ending that he hasn't

directed for like a decade like it's on he's

acting he's not even directing it with John Totoro,

you know who he's been an actor for a long time

so That that's probably the most intriguing part

of that movie is just the fact that Woody Allen's

acting in it Do you have any interest whatsoever

in railway man or or bad words or endless love?

Mmm, the only interest I have in railway man

is because it's calling first and I do think

he's a great good actor But the trailer did not

really entice me at all. So no, I I don't have

any interest in those films Gotcha. Yeah If anyone

else is interested, check out the trailers. We'll

have them in our post. But like you said nothing

nothing spectacular that really caught my eye.

And for the comic book lovers, there's a link

to Stan Lee's Mighty Seven, the animated piece

being put out. So you can view that as well.

So that does it for the news for this week. Now

I'll pass it back to you, Dan. All right, we'll

take a break. When we come back, we'll be discussing

Spike Jonze's latest film, Her. Good morning,

Theodore. Good morning. You have a meeting in

five minutes. You want to try getting out of

bed? Get up! You're too funny. Theodore, I saw

in your emails that you'd gone through a breakup

recently. You're kind of nosy. Am I? You'll get

used to it. So what was it like being married?

There's something that feels so good about sharing

your life with somebody. How do you share your

life with somebody? The woman that I've been

seeing, Samantha, she's an operating system.

You're dating an OS? What is that like? I feel

really close to her. Like, when I talk to her,

I feel like she's with me. I want to learn everything

about everything. I want to discover myself.

I want that for you too. Keep going. Keep going.

Falling in love is kind of like a form of socially

acceptable insanity. You're dating a computer?

She's not just a computer. You always wanted

to have a wife without the challenges of actually

dealing with anything real. I'm glad that you

found someone. I don't know what I want. Ever.

Am I in this because I'm strong enough for a

real relationship? Is it not a real relationship?

I don't think you'd feel so alone anymore. You're

beautiful. We're only here briefly. And while

I'm here, I... I want to allow myself joy. I've

never loved anyone the way I love you. Me too.

Now I know... Alright, and welcome back. And

like I mentioned, we'll be discussing Spike Jonze's

latest film, Her. It's directed by Spike Jonze,

also written by Spike Jonze, and it stars Joaquin

Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson in a voice -over

only role, and as well as Amy Adams. So, Kevin,

what were your thoughts on Her? I think we're

gonna be in somewhat agreement with this one.

I thought this was phenomenal. I thought it was

the perfect time for this film to come out. You

know, perhaps maybe, you know, 20, 30 years from

now, if you were looking back at the evolution

of society, that this film was perfectly placed

into that. As we're kind of seems like we're

on this brink of just complete virtual reality,

implants, chips, slash whatever. And I think

what I liked most about this film, my friend

and I were talking about this as we left the

theater, was that this movie is set in the future,

relatively, but the way they constructed their

future, for the most part, in our opinions, was

very subtle. in how they made it futuristic,

I guess, is what I'm trying to say. There's a

lot of films that'll be placed in the future

and they just go berserk with trying to throw

everything in the kitchen sink at you as to this

has changed and that's changed and this changed

and that changed, which sometimes you have to

do that. But I very much appreciated that it

was more so just little things here and there.

It wasn't those massive like, you know, like

when you watch obviously certain science fiction

films They have to do that in time you had to

do a lot of different things because it's completely

different concept of how societies run and you

know, you appreciate a time traveling film like

back to the future and how many different things

are gonna throw at you or like a Star Trek film

with different innovations and whatnot, but there's

a lot of times where you have these films that

are set in the future where it's just It's so

radically different that you can't connect to

it. And what this film did, it made you believe

that this is a reality, a future that could be

a reality, a future that you could see yourself

living in. It didn't come across as, oh yeah,

that's just this fantastical world 50 years from

now that has no shot of actually being true.

Yeah, I agree with what you're saying 100 % like

it like this world that is like the key heading

to the success of her is the world it creates

like you mentioned it could it's so subtle that

it could be existing, you know 20 years from

now or like 150 years from now and Like it it

gets across that you have certain things are

gonna change But not everything is gonna change

like if you look back at where we are today and

where we were, you know 20 30 years ago There's

adjustments, but it's not like it's everything

is changing. And like you mentioned, sometimes

you have those movies that once it becomes a

feature, like every single element, like you

have flying cars, there's no more roads. If you

think like a completely different type of movie,

but something like Minority Report and every

car looks futuristic. Every element is futuristic.

Everything's touch. It's it comes across as like

this radical change instead of like a progressive

change where which is more realistic. Exactly.

And I think I think that's key because it like

you mentioned it it brings in that relate ability

to this movie because it is you know, very much

a reflection of Today it We like you mentioned

there's such a huge requirement of technology

today our connect how we're connected is Vastly

different than how you were connected a long

time ago. I mean we have stuff like Siri and

we have all these different Pieces of technology

that we become isolated and we become like within

our own world in a lot of different ways and

I think it gets at that but I think it also gets

at some other issues just regarding uh, like

relationships and the validity of relationships

and where they begin and And you mean I like

you you I absolutely loved her. Um, I thought

it was fantastic I think you you Mentioned it

Earlier regarding Joaquin Phoenix's performance,

which is fantastic as well means Scarlett Johansson.

I I could not we talked about well a long long

time ago like how they indicated that she wouldn't

be eligible for an Oscar and after seeing this

I really think that's Shame because I do believe

even though she's not on screen like her She's

just as present as the any other performance

this year if not more so and just think of it

And you know, this is obviously something that

voice actors can attest to but but how much?

This is even voice actors Get the luxury of you

being able to see the character they're voicing

and And Scarlett Johansson doesn't get that there

is no thing that you're seeing that goes along

with her dialogue. And for her to be able to

convey the different things that she's conveying,

emotions, state of mind, et cetera, with no visual

representation to me is even more impressive

than someone doing it on screen in certain ways.

Because it's that much harder for you to be convincing

and to have someone buy into that emotion. when

you're not being seen. So yeah, I think it's

travesty that that certain things are not deeming

her eligible. I think another thing to just kind

of go back a little bit. To me, this is a film

that is brought out in college literature classes,

or different stuff like that, where it's like,

I remember being in college, actually, and I

had like an advanced I don't know if it was lit

or rhetoric or what the actual class was, but

where we kind of seemed like it was like a college

course, but it was like a book club. But I remember

like a fight club, you know, kind of traditionally

that that was one that was we brought out and

it's one that, you know, you can interpret a

billion different ways and you can have these

deep discussions about it and you can talk about

all these different issues that it may or may

not relate to. And to me, that's somewhat her

has a lot of that. in our time. There's so many

different discussions you can have that come

out of a scene or a group of dialogue from this

film that is just so profound that you could

have a lot of intellectual discussions based

on this film. Maybe some that the writer wanted

you to have, maybe some that he couldn't even

imagine you would get to. And I think it was

absolute genius and perfection that the profession

that he has in this film is basically, you know,

writing letters for people. Like the symbolism

behind that and then as, you know, to me it just

strikes on how much, and I'm sorry that we're

giving maybe some spoilers away in this, but

a lot of... A lot of this can be seen somewhat

in the trailer. You kind of get the gist of it.

But the idea that technology somewhat takes away

that human touch and that human connection, and

then to have him be someone who is producing

letters for other people. That was perfect. Yeah

in the opening shot like that you get so so much

about that character like immediately, you know

you I guess this isn't really a spoiler since

it's beginning but you know what you have this

emotion this deep emotional moment and he's just

you know, uh going so deep and speaking about

such such a like, uh Genuine relationship and

then to find out what it's really about and then

you find out really he's nothing I mean not that

he's nothing like that But when it comes to real

life, he's such an introvert He doesn't really

connect with people and he has this relationship

that he's still trying to get over and stuff

like that So yeah that that job in particular

is not only great for the character It's also

like we mentioned really great for this world

because it says a lot when you have A universe

in which people will pay people to say Like,

you know heartfelt things to their loved ones

because they're unable to do it themselves and

do that Throughout a large large amount of time

So yeah, I just that idea It's kind of out there,

but it really makes sense when you when you think

of where we are I mean and you think about a

greeting card that we have today and it's so

it's the same thing really because you think

about times you get a greeting card and that

someone just passing along someone else's words

to you. Well, this is kind of an evolution of

that that makes sense and fits this character

really well. And then the other thing was to

the I think I'd even struck another level and

kind of alluded to that where it wasn't, you

know, at first you're just thinking that it's

so, you know, it's it's for this occasion or

that occasion, you know, someone can't come up

with the right words or someone's not able to

write it. So they want you to write it. But then

when you get the idea that, you know, like in

one instance that it's not just one time that

he's written for this person but that he's been

doing it for a long long time you know number

of years it almost hits another level then it's

like this isn't just you know something that

he did once for this person it's like how bizarre

of a relationship can you have with someone when

you know a majority of your correspondence with

that person over 10, 12 -year period is someone

else's words. Yeah. That's just bizarre. I wanted

to share the other two things that my friend

said to me when we were walking out the theater

that I thought were somewhat amusing. Well, one

of them he said in the theater twice. And then

he also said it when we were leaving the theater.

And he said that if that video game existed,

that he would play it every day of his life.

And then the other thing that he said, he said,

uh, I don't know. He said, I like a lot of things

about that society and about that, uh, that world

that was created, but I don't think I could wear

my pants like that, which I thought was funny

because I definitely thought similar things when

I'm like, so this is the futuristic, uh, style

of clothing here, I guess. Yeah. Really high

waisted pants with no belts or anything. It was

all flat fronts. And just like very high and

nobelton at first I thought it was just gonna

be him but then it was like every single character

What is going on? But uh, what were some of the

other things that you want to talk about about

this one? um one thing I found interesting too

is because you know, obviously this this little

relationship blossoms and What I what I found

was really telling was when he gets in this relationship

and he begins to share it with other people that

he's in it and their reactions to it and it would

Be really easy to kind of make it this game maker

joke whether it's just like oh my god, it's just

I can be embarrassed but How people's reactions

to it are rather like oh, what's that like or

like? How is that and and it I think it says

a lot? and it makes it It makes a really poignant

point about where this world is because it seems

like it. Yeah, that's just a thing people do

now And it seemed to me like it was almost like

like the next this is going to sound a little

overly dramatic, but like the next big social

hurdle to get over like, you know, like there's

been, you know, times where people have been

picked on for different things, race, gender,

sexual orientation, etc. And now it's like the

future you get, you have to come over, overcome

the stigma of having relationships with computers.

But yeah, I agree that was an interesting aspect

of it as well. And seeing how some people didn't

really care and some people accepted it and some

people thought it was weird. And, you know, especially

the one meeting he had, I guess it was in a park

or whatever with the table with another character

in which she reacted kind of how we would react

in today's mind frame, I guess. But then you

saw other characters. Reacting like it was no

big deal or other characters who also had certain

those certain types of relationships going on

It's just like it's just very interesting Yeah,

and What was kind of interesting too was how

how will he? delimited the world felt like they're

Lot of shots of like, you know, you see him walking

around the city and it always feels like he's

like one of like four people that populates this

world and I don't think that's a bad thing I

think it I think it makes it seems everything

so expansive and so vast and he's just one small

part of it Which which I thought was like a great

framing device, but were there any anything in

particular that you wanted? Well, I just thought

there was some very interesting scenes and very

very impactful scenes. I think back to like,

I guess I can compare this in a much lesser level

here to like being in college and being in the

apartments or the dorms and there would always

be that moment when the internet went down or

the Wi -Fi or whatever we were using would go

down and all of a sudden you would have like

four or five somewhat intelligent college students,

you know, pacing around the apartment. not knowing

what to do with themselves because all of a sudden

the internet was gone. And I remember we had

that happen more than one occasion and it would

just be like people sitting, I sadly remember

myself doing this even where you were just sitting

in your computer like hitting reload to see if

the internet was back yet. Like over and over

and over again. And then like all of a sudden

you'd rendezvous with like someone else would

come out of the room the same time you did and

you'd kind of be looking at each other like.

Internet's down You know you get something to

eat You need to be trying to kill town because

it is like why am I crippled because the internet

is down like what is wrong with me and I compare

that in a way to Although in the movie, it's

a much much deeper Like I said more impactful

way, but like there's a scene when when he's

sitting on the steps I believe kind of is it

the steps coming from a subway or to a subway

or whatever Yeah, but he's sitting on the steps

there, you know coming to a realization and it's

just like the way that scene was framed and the

realization that he comes to and I'm not trying

to spoil anything so I'm not gonna go into detail

with it, but to me that just that hit home and

that was just like I Don't know that was just

a powerful scene to me. Yeah. Yeah, that was

one like I think one of the not breaking points,

but one of the moments where it just it really

told just how Intense that connection was between

those characters. Um, it would have found interesting

too is like how This relationship between them

became just like a normal relationship and it

was like treated that way and especially in like

the reactions towards one another the scarlet

your hands and in walking phoenix and um here

after they have a certain like encounter with

one another when they really Delved deep in the

relationship and then they have that awkwardness

afterwards and and how you see there they get

in the fights and bickering and and it ended

up just feeling like a normal relationship and

you ended up just I'd I ended up just just treating

it such and we're not even thinking of the fact

that this is a computer and What that to me was

maybe the most interesting was that I myself

just found it a normal Type of behavior after

a while because the movie did a good job of convincing

me but but ultimately I mean It is all about

the relationship that humans have with technology

You know with their phones with their computers,

etc and almost Harkens back to you know the days

of hell And and almost that type of thing where

you know The the interaction or the relationship

between technology and humans and and and what

can and can't come of that and Kind of the infinite

knowledge that's stored in these computers, etc

So, I mean there's just a lot of issues that

touch on one thing I guess I wasn't expecting

going in was a few I guess we should talk about

a few of those funny scenes Specifically this

is a comedy, so Yeah, and this is what made it

qualify for the comedy, I guess. But specifically

before he even meets Scarlett Johansson, the

scene with him in the bedroom and the cat. I

haven't been in the theater too often lately

where everybody was trying not to laugh. Couldn't

hold it back and that was just the most absurd

ridiculous out of left field Uh thing that I

don't know that was then we were dying Yeah,

I was not expecting like that type of I guess

raunchiness from this I think I don't I think

that voice was christian wake, but I don't know

for sure Uh, but yeah that in the theater ourselves

was rather packed So there was a I mean I was

laughing and I know a lot of people who were

it was just so So absurd and you mentioned the

video game stuff too and I found like that that

very very funny. Yeah I wasn't expecting to see

as much as much of a I guess not just obscenities

in that situation but the sexual tones and whatnot.

I guess I wasn't expecting some of that but I

think it it was very well put in there and I

don't know like I think it's impossible to have

one of these movies without touching on the physical

aspects Of this, you know, we're talking about

a relationship with someone in the computer So

we have to find a way to do that and I thought

they did it just about perfectly Yeah, that scene

in particular and how it it fades to black and

it's just for you know, good I don't know. I

felt really long in the theater like three or

four minutes Yeah, I may have been in minute

but it felt a lot longer than that I think it

was a smart move to because I think it It allowed

you to kind of experience it the same way that

they were I guess But yeah, I thought that was

a look at us and then like I mentioned the The

morning after that moment and you just that just

weirdness between them, which was humorous Anything

that you anything nitpick anything you disliked

anything you thought could have been done a little

bit different or anything that caught you As

jarring or anything throughout the entire field

in the film. It's hard. I've been thinking about

that. I'm like I want to I don't want to just

Be all positive, but I've been searching for

negative stuff about it and I really couldn't

Maybe the the ending a little bit is Comes not

quickly, but it There's maybe a little bit lack

of closure there, but not necessarily. I don't

know maybe Honestly, like after watching it first

time there was nothing I just fell in love with

it So I nothing really negative came across my

mind if I did I think I would just be really

nitpicking something and I Can't really think

of much. How about yourself? Yeah, I think I

would have to watch it again, I guess with the

Trying to find something and to me if you have

to try to find something wrong with something

That's just silly Yeah, so yeah, I did not come

across with anything that I could find that I

disliked anything that I would like man I that

was really good, but I would have changed that

there's been so many films this year that I thought

could be Even better if this and I did not come

away with any of that from this film. Yeah, I

I guess do you think Because this is what I was

wondering because I heard you know, a lot of

people General, I think general audiences. Maybe

I don't go to the movies a lot probably Couldn't

take a movie like this seriously. Do you feel

like a movie like this would have an appeal to

like your general movie fan? Um I think there

is... You know, I've already brought Fight Club

up, I guess once, so let's bring it up again.

You know, can Fight Club be... Fight Club can

be accepted by the general audience just because

they want to say that they like it and because

it's popular and they know it's supposed to be

good. But 90 percent of those people don't have

a darn clue what that film was or what it was

or wasn't about. Yeah. So, you know, I'm not

trying to sound like this elitist or whatever,

but I think there's there is a level of you have

to pass a certain IQ level in order to understand

and enjoy this film. Which I don't think is a

bad thing. I agree. I think it's it is, you know,

your thinker. I do think I mean, I think there

is an If you're just looking for like a love

story that is here, but I think to control it

I don't know if I can completely grasp everything

right? I think there's a lot Maybe i'm not getting

or maybe i'm putting A difference put on it any

intention, which I think is a good thing I think

a lot of filmmakers do that intentionally so

they people can take you have interpretations,

but I think there is I think there is at least

with the younger audience, even if you don't

have The intelligence to maybe get some of the

nuances, which I'm not saying I get them all

either I'm not trying to sound like that. But

even if you can't I think at least with the younger

generation They've grown up with technology.

So maybe they're gonna be able to Understand

some of it or at least At least be able to follow

some of it And and relate to it. I think with

the older audiences though, you definitely like

I guess this is not for old dumb people You should

put that on the poster, not for old dumb people.

And get some hate mail. But if you weren't brought

up with technology and you don't have the knowledge

base to understand some of it, you might be lost

or you might not enjoy it. But I think there

is, I think one thing that it might do successfully,

and maybe it would take a little bit longer to

digest with the film and more rewatches, but

I think one thing it does... possibly do is it

is built in a way that can appeal to different

levels and to different you know different levels

of thinkers you know maybe on the surface there

is just that technology base that people can

relate to it and they can they can get the whole

you know they can enjoy the whole movie for that

respect without even having to delve into some

of the deeper stuff so I think it possibly could

relate to multiple people but I I don't necessarily

see it appealing to some of the younger Mass

audiences, but maybe I'm wrong. Yeah, I agree.

I know I know a lot of people that Were friends

of mine had no interest thought it would kind

of kind of silly and I could understand that

just based off the premise But I think if you're

hesitant to go check this movie out I would say

if you like anything else that's Blakely Jones

has done like being in John Malkovich or like

adaptation or Even if you don't like those movies,

I would say check her out for sure because there

there's so much more They make this concept which

should be ridiculous into such a powerful piece

of cinema That I think if you're looking, you

know, especially with the war season coming like,

you know, the best movies of the year I would

Certainly put that up there so and for all the

people that complain about never getting anything

unique or never getting anything original or

never getting anything except for remakes and

reboots and sequels like Stop complaining and

go watch a film like this exactly exactly it

definitely shows us a lot of creativity out there

for sure Because it is it just me or is the same

people that complain about all that stuff the

same people that won't go see anything Unless

they already kind of know what it's gonna be

about Exactly, I don't like any of that stuff,

but those are the only films I'm gonna go see

it's like someone who complains There's no good

food, but all they do is like shop at McDonald's.

It's like yeah. Yeah, that's that's always my

thing It's like there's more than chicken fingers

out there and that goes for movies as well. So

Exactly. So anything else before we give our

ratings for the film? Don't let the tension build

up too much here. I think I think you might have

an idea where we're gonna go with the ratings

Yeah, yeah. I like it. We could probably go on

for days with this film So which is gonna go

into my rating and if you're on my review on

the site And I do go in more detail for that.

So you want any more my thoughts you can check

it out there But I gave it a five stars for sure.

It was a I thought it was I mean perfect is a

strong word But I definitely thought it was one

of the best movies I've seen all year. How about

yourself? Five is as high as we can go, right?

Yeah, like I said, I'm Trying like you did probably

I'm heading on to this podcast I knew this was

kind of the main attraction that we're gonna

be talking about and I was pondering and trying

to come up with a way to say something that I

could find and If I have to try that hard then

to me that's a five out of five exactly So alright,

so that those are our tanks if you agree or disagree

with us. There's plenty of ways of getting Feedback

and we'll go over that at the end of the show

and before we end We'll take a look at what else

is coming out in this upcoming week There's a

few films coming out next week and there's the

devil's dew the new Jack Ryan movie shadow recruit

along with the Kevin Hart Ice Cube right along

which is like Looks to me like Eddie Murphy movie

from 20 years ago, but what you gonna do and

also the nutshell Yeah, it looks like the big

animated movie to start the year. So any interest

in any of those movies at all from you? I Might

see Jack Ryan shadow recruit. I might not I Guess

the Samuel L. Jackson fans will want to go see

reasonable doubt. Oh true. Yes, but I don't know

if that's me The nut job could be an interesting

little animated film Nothing really jumps out

at me Almost watched Jamesy Boy on on -demand

apparently last week. I didn't realize that was

just being released in theaters Do you think

any of those films have any potential of knocking

off Lone Survivor from number one? I don't believe

that there's gonna be a big enough Jack Ryan

following So I'm gonna go with a no. Yeah, I

agree with you DVD and blu -ray Kind of a crazy

week this week a lot of stuff coming out. So

you have smaller films You have a little bit

of everything this week. You have 20 feet from

stardom, which is a documentary I'm hearing a

lot of great stuff by a single shot if you haven't

seen again hearing a lot of great stuff by ACOD

be my Valentine Luca priest Fruitville Station,

which is a movie I greatly adored Lee Daniels

the butler, which is surprisingly got no love

at the Golden Globes I thought it might get something

but they got pretty much nothing Riddick for

those Riddick fans out there the spectacular

now I'm talked about that not too long ago You're

next. I haven't seen that but I've heard pretty

good things about it I'm seeing if I missed anything

here a blue like I mentioned blue curve priest

anything Unlist that you think you'll be checking

out or anything. I miss that you want to know

Well, I guess I must not be Because we have in

DVD and blu -ray. There's one that's on the blu

-ray isn't listed on the DVD list for some reason

enough said Which I have heard a lot and I've

been tempted to watch that that is available

for me to watch on demand but this is like a

Who's who of all the movies that I have not been

able to find anywhere I've been waiting and waiting

for a chance to watch Fruitvale station in the

spectacular now for months and Hopefully now

I can finally do that So those are the two I'm

looking forward to the most possibly blue Caprice

possibly enough said but I'm definitely going

to be Making a way to watch Fruitvale station

in a spectacular now. I've seen the Caprice.

I would recommend it at it's a You know it talks

about the dc sniper way back when it actually

that's really only a small portion of it But

it's a pretty solid film But yeah a lot of coming

out like you mentioned a great a great deal of

like 2013 movies that you may have missed And

last week we for our credit conversation we mentioned

we asked him what we biggest prize his biggest

disappointments of the year and Got a variety

of different feedback. You know, we saw a lot

of people in a Kate gravity Star Trek in the

darkness was the one for disappointment though

Some people had it for surprise In surgeon since

cinema mentioned his biggest surprises spring

breakers and this disappointment was on John

We had a lot of people who? Talked about the

world's end saving. Mr. Banks was a surprise

for some people as well so Kevin I know if you

Thought about this a great deal, but do you have

anything you feel like is a huge surprise to

you or disappointment? Let's start with the disappointment

first because that seems to be easier I think

we kind of alluded to this last week. I guess

I wasn't expecting much out of it I would obviously

have to classify a good day die hard as a disappointment

but with the caveat that I wasn't expecting much

from it anyway. So I guess how much can I really

disappoint if I was looking at movies that I

was actually looking forward to and thought would

be really good that I felt I was really let down

with. In that situation, I guess I would have

to go with the counselor. I thought that was

a big let down. I didn't see it, but I'm guessing

if I did see old boy that had qualify as a let

down Runner runner was a let down for me So those

would probably be outside of I guess if you if

you want to qualify a good day to die hard Those

would be probably my biggest disappointments

as far as so well, let me do your disappointments

first So I'm gonna stay on that train of thought,

but which ones were you disappointed with? I

guess I'm along the same lines like the counselor

to me was a big disappointment Oh boy, which

I did see what was disappointing I think disappointed

might be a strong word, but Dallas wires club,

which is maybe I love the performances But I

thought it could be a lot better than it was

And same thing with American Hustle again, not

a movie I would call a bad movie by any means

just that I thought it had potential being one

of the years past but but it wasn't And what

about you for surprises? I have some surprises

for different reasons, I guess. Well, let me

real quick, though. As much as I say good things

about Despicable Me 2, to me, that was a disappointment.

The first one was so good, and I did not think

the second one came anywhere close to living

up to it. So I will qualify that as a disappointment,

even though I love the franchise in general.

I would say, for different reasons here, I would

say Jobs for me was a bit of a surprise because

I went in expecting to just not like it at all.

And I went in expecting not to like Ashton Kutcher

at all. I'm not saying the film's great, but

it was better than I thought it was going to

be. So I guess that is somewhat of a surprise

for me. Outside of that, I thought World War

Z was a pleasant surprise. That was much better.

I liked that much more than I thought I would.

I would say the book thief kind of came out of

nowhere for me. That was a surprise. I didn't

expect to enjoy that one as much as I did. I

kind of just went to see that just on a whim.

I didn't expect to like 12 years a slave as much

as I did, even though I don't know why I wasn't

expecting to like that. So that was a surprise

for me. And even Frozen, in a way, I wasn't expecting

it to be as good as it was. Outside of that,

I know you didn't really give a great review

for this film, but I thought Two Guns was going

to be... I thought that had the potential to

be a disaster, and I was actually very entertained

by it. I'm not saying it's like an award -winning

type film, but if you just want to watch a good

action -comedy, just entertaining film, I thought

that was surprisingly better than I thought it

would be. Yeah, and surprises for me. I do agree.

I think I'm not and it was successful It's similar.

I thought again not a great movie, but Olympus

has fallen. I thought was it a decent action

film? Out of the White House invasion movies.

I thought it was the best. It's a little schlocky

I mean the special effects are pretty bad and

some of the dialogue but if you treated it as

like a level B action movie like Old Chuck Norris

days. I think it appreciated a little bit more

same thing with like GI Joe to I thought yeah,

I thought that was such a great improvement from

the last GI Joe movie and some movie that surprised

me just because I knew nothing about them, but

Which was Motel life a small film with a male

Harris and Stephen Dorff mostly for Stephen Dorff's

performance Which to me came out of nowhere?

also print Prince Avalanche Which is also streaming

on Netflix starring a mill harsh as well and

Paul ride like David Gordon Green hasn't been

doing a lot of great things lately and With stuff

like your highness, but I thought that was actually

a return to form for him So that was really good

as well in a to frozen. I wasn't really expecting

anything from that movie Starting the year and

then I ended up really enjoying that and thought

it was the best animated movie of the year Obviously

haven't seen the one why is it? yet though so

that's a foreign film that's not an animated

film apparently yeah again that makes no sense

either um but but yeah so i there i think it's

a good thing when i feel like the surprises have

outweighed the disappointments but by a great

deal yeah i agree so the question is what is

our question for next week and with the golden

globes today when we're recording this upcoming

this week is the oscar nominations are coming

out We're in the thick of things with award season.

So I know a lot of people have different opinions

when it comes to the awards. So we're kind of

curious to know if you could add a category to

the awards that isn't currently there. You think

there's a certain area or certain element you

think that could be added to make them better.

What would that be? Maybe we might steal it and

use it for our own awards. Who knows? But it's

curious to think, you know, what you feel is

not getting recognition by, you know, the awards.

Maybe they're looking down on something or they're

not considering a certain aspect of filmmaking

that they should be. And be interested in seeing

what people thought. And we're also going to

have some ways for you to feel even more involved

in the award season. GCRN is doing our own award.

Show so to speak and we'll be doing a lot of

different genres, but Dan and I are gonna Give

you more information next week on how you can

be involved in the in the movie aspects of that

And and some movie awards that will be given

out. So keep an ear open for next week Yeah,

detail and if you want to get back to us There's
