About this Episode

The hosts discuss five episodes from Batman: The Animated Series: the two-part story 'The Demon's Quest', 'His Silicon Soul', 'Fire from Olympus', and 'Read My Lips'. The conversation covers the introduction of Ra's al Ghul, the thematic similarities between the HARDAC duplicate and Skynet, the Greek mythology-inspired antics of Maxie Zeus, and the ventriloquism of Scarface. The episode also includes news about the La-La Land Records 'Batman: The Animated Series' Volume 2 soundtrack release for San Diego Comic-Con 2012.

You're listening to Legends of the Dark Knight,

only on the Geekcast Radio Network. Hello and

welcome to Legends of the Dark Knight. I'm your

host Steve Megatron Phillips and joining me in

this trip to Gotham City is... JfJ and Mike,

hello. Hello. How are you? Uh, good. Having watched

a couple of movies in theater since the last

episode. Yes. Namely, uh, The Amazing Spider

-Man. Um, let's see. We got the Kevin Conroy

interview. I'm still working on Mark Hamill.

Still have yet to hear back from his people.

Oh, and the biggest thing we need to talk about

is La La Land Records is releasing BTIS Volume

2, a four disc CD set with more music from Batman

the Animated Series. It will be a San Diego Comic

Con exclusive for 2012. It is priced at $60.

It will go on sale I believe 1 p .m. Central

Time July 19th, I think is when it goes on sale

on La La Land's website. If you're a BTIS fan

and you missed out on the first volume, that

will also be on sale as well. I don't know what

the price is on that. I'm not looking up the

information on it. It's minus like three or four

tracks, too, though. From the original volume

one. They cut like four tracks for whatever reason.

Oh, that's weird. But yeah, the volume two set,

oh my god, four discs of music, holy crap. You

better, if you're not going to San Diego Comic

Con, you better be on La La Land's website if

you want this, because it's going, the original

BTIS soundtrack sold out, I think, within...

Four days if not said if not say it's sold out

fast the As with the first volume the second

volume is also going to be a limited run And

60 bucks for four discs is not not that bad considering

all the music you're getting I actually I'm having

a friend of mine who was actually going to STCC

pick me one up nice Yes so But no, I'm very excited

that La La Land Records is continuing their DCAU

soundtracks. I hope we eventually get Superman

the Animated Series and Justice League and Justice

League Unlimited. There were Batman Beyond soundtracks.

They weren't done by La La Land. I don't know

if they will redo them for some sort of anniversary,

whichever anniversary is coming up. I think it's

like the 15th anniversary is coming up in a couple

years. I don't know if La La Land will redo those

since they were already done. But yeah, I really

want to see a Superman the Animated Series and

Justice League soundtrack from La La Land Records.

That would be so awesome. It would be nice. They

actually did have epic sound. Yes. Yes. I think

that's pretty much all that's going on. Yeah,

I think that as well. So with that, we'll be

moving on to the first episode of the night.

None. And I've scoured the entire city. No one

has seen either Robin or Dick Grayson for two

days. I really should remain upstairs, then,

sir. Lest he call. Oh, by the way, this came

for you an hour ago, by messenger. They know

your identity, Detective. Who are you? How did

you get in here? You must forgive Ubu, Detective.

He is well -trained. Allow me to introduce myself.

I am he who is called Raish Al Ghul. The Demon's

Head. I thought you were only a legend. I am

quite real. And as I am sure you realize by now,

my reputation for... Resourcefulness is well

deserved. As you can see, we have a common problem.

Your ward was abducted on the same night as my

daughter. You do remember my daughter? You're

Talia's father? Yes. But surely you would not

expect her to mention me by name. Keep your distance.

I am merely old. Older perhaps than you can imagine.

but not so old that I cannot assist you in your

search I get the message first up is the demon's

quest part one and two yes yes Robin returns

home to Gotham University and sneaks into his

room only to find a group of people waiting for

him they hit him with the tranquilizer dart and

he falls unconscious the leader of the group

a man in a jackal mask is pleased Later, Batman

returns to the Batcave and talks to Alfred about

the fact that Robin has been missing for two

days and his searches have been fruitless. Alfred

gives Bruce a message that arrived for him. Looking

at it, Bruce is shocked to find that the message,

although addressed to Bruce, has a note inside

referring to him as Batman. The note is attached

to a picture of Robin tied up. By Rachel ghoul

and his servant as ubu ubu. Yes, it was annoying

You so have to put the three strike audio in

in the episode. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah infidel strike

one one That's two and there's three. I love

that No, the two -parter was great. It was a

real great intro to I mean we've seen I'm trying

to this is the first time we've actually seen

race on screen, right? Yes in the yeah been mentioned,

but right right right he's been mentioned, but

this is the first time that he's revealed and

Overall the two -parter was just amazingly well

done The the scenery was what was was very very

unique and different of the different areas that

they went to I thought that was kind of cool

I actually took a couple of screencaps to put

on my Facebook page one was Where Batman is standing

and his cape is falling around his it's almost

like he's just invisible his whole his old body's

invisible because the cape is falling around

his feet I really just love that style of of

his design And I took another one when Batman

has the weirdest Facial text he just does He

makes this face when he sees Talia again Of just

complete and utter shock and it looks like some

weird Post -coital face or something. I don't

know it's just It was just a weird weird way

to show shock on his face I know there's not

a whole lot of ways to go around doing you know

giving him Facial expressions in the costume,

but I don't know it just kind of weirded me out

Yeah, I didn't really pay as much attention to

that as you did obviously well I saw it because

I Wanted to get a screencap of it, but no overall

the two -parter is great. I love the story that

it tells I Love the fact that you know you've

got this whole oh my beloved thing where they

supposedly had a romance at one point That was

kind of cool And just race his whole plan of

and instead of Okay, you've got in, you know

in the 40s you had Hitler Where he's gonna complete,

you know do complete and utter genocide on on

a specific race Here you have race that just

wants to destroy the entire world and rebuild

it in his own image or whatever Don't know I

really I I did enjoy this one. So what about

you? What did you think? Um, well, I love how

race uses his daughter and Robin is a instrument

of getting Batman You know on his side kind of

thing and then of course Ubu's irritating Batman

the entire way And Race explains in this how

he deduced Bruce Wayne had to be Batman. Yeah

based on the money yeah it references off balance

and uh which batman has since rectified the issue

but um and then i love the fact that race asks

later batman how long he's been on to him and

then batman replies from the very beginning and

then uh you know it just it unfolds from there

yeah So I mean, it was just it was such a great

episode. I love the role that Raish plays in

this. He's almost the like another head on kind

of villain, kind of like the Joker in a sense.

But this one's more, you know, even minded with

Batman. As far as deducing strategy. Oh, well

yeah. The difference between Raish and the Joker

is the Joker needs Batman. In order for him to

do his criminal exploits and to get his laughs,

he needs Batman. Psychologically. Raish does

not need Batman psychologically at all. He needs

him physically. Ew. Well, you know what I mean,

as far as to lead the League of Assassins. Yes.

And then the other part in Batman Beyond. Yeah,

stop it. I want to join with you. But yeah, but

David Warner's role as Ray Shelgo was spectacular.

Yes, it was. We want to get into some background

or some trivia. Sure, what little there is. Yes

These I mentioned it a minute ago Rache found

out about about Batman in off -balance where

his daughter Talia saw Batman without his mask

It's also in the episode Mechanic where Rache

was talking about tracking him down through the

money. He traced it through the through the Batmobile

parts. Nice. And then as far as production notes,

this episode is based on the comic stories Daughter

of the Demon. Wow, from the 70s. That's crazy.

Batman number 232. And the Demon Lives Again

in Batman number 244. Again in the 70s. Yes.

Yeah, that's it. It's nice to see some comic

ties that actually work brought into the series.

I mean granted there are some throwaways but

mostly there's great stuff from the comics brought

over or oh yeah oh yeah there's definitely a

lot of comic influence though yes um why is your

cat talking to us I do not know she went she's

like what about cat The casting in this, I did

not know this at the time when this first aired.

I've obviously known since having the DVD set

and everything else. You have Supergirl in this.

Talia. Talia is voiced by Helen Slater who portrayed

Supergirl in the 1984 Supergirl film. I'm gonna

have to go back and rewatch Supergirl to just

hear the voice, to hear her voice in that and

obviously compare it to this. Well, and she also

was Laura L. in Smallville. Yep. Yep. Yes, she

was. Which is interesting. She's been tied to

Superman. And Batman. And Batman. Hell if you

really think about it, and this is kind of going

off on a tangent if you really think about it

Dana Delaney Was Batman's first? Because of Andrea

in Mask of a Phantasm before she was Lois But

yeah the demons quest it was an awesome two -parter

just a great great story that they told Absolutely

loved it Yes, I agree. So with that, we'll be

moving on. This is a bunch of junk, Chaz. What'd

you drag us down here for? I'm telling you, man,

this place is full of top -secret technology

from some computer factory that blew up. It's

full of something all right. And so are you.

No, I'm serious, man. Defense systems, robotics,

laser weaponry... This ain't happening. Pathetic.

This ain't happening. This ain't happening. Next

up is his Silicon Soul. Late one night, a group

of criminals break into a warehouse owned by

Cybertron. Wow, that's a nice nod in there. Where

all the surviving items in the factory are kept.

They hope to find some high technology they can

sell. They come upon a large crate, obviously

not recognizing the giant Hardac icon. They open

it. From inside, Batman jumps out. Startled,

the criminals attack Batman with crowbars, but

he's more than a match for them. During the battle,

however, one of them pulls out a gun and shoots

Batman, exposing circuitry. The crook is surprised

to find the Batman isn't human. This was such

a great episode. And our friends Marty Eisenberg

and Bob Skewer wrote it. Hence why the company

is called Cybertron. That is very, very convenient.

Although it was before either one worked on.

I really enjoyed this one. It's a continuation

of the Hard Axe storyline from Heart of Steel.

But it's oh so better. Oh, no, well, I mean,

I liked Heart of Steel, but Heart of Steel just

felt like, you know, your average. It gets kind

of hollow at points. It felt like your average,

and I think we said this in the episode when

we talked about it, it just felt like your average

every day, oh, blah -dee -blah -blah -blah, I'm

doing this because of this. Whereas in this one,

and I know that they may mention of this in the

wiki somewhere, that Hardac essentially is the

DCAU's Skynet. He is. Yeah. Because he wants

to replace everybody. But this one, because we

don't know, we didn't know what, like we saw

at the end of Heart of Steel Part 2, we saw that

another duplicate was being made, like a Bruce,

I think we saw at the end of that that another

duplicate was being made, but we never found

out what happened to it. Here is where we find

out what happens to it. The last one he made

was of Bruce Wayne in Batman, but he made it

so well that it almost was... Well, it actually

thought. It was Bruce Wayne slash Batman. Right,

exactly. And that's where Hard Act went wrong.

And then he had to of course fix his own error.

You know, Hard Act did. And it was nice seeing

Carl Rossum come back a second time, which he'll

be back again. But it was interesting watching

Batman fight Batman. And then Batman fight Batman

in Batcave. I'm gonna have to go back on my wall

photos on Facebook, and I'm gonna Hopefully you'll

put this in the post. I absolutely love red eyes

Batman I Have he truly is the Dark Knight yes,

I have a screen cap of it. I'll have to find

it But I just felt that this story was like it

was almost like a what -if story like what if

this thing this duplicate really does have. Like,

what if Hardack constructed him and built him

so well that a soul was in this thing? Yeah,

it almost seemed that way. And I just, I think

this episode is, it also looks Batman kind of

in the soul too, just for the sake of what happens

at the very end. Mmm, even no matter how badly

hard act took over this Batman clone essentially

Mm -hmm. It did not stop the Batman Bruce Wayne

programming that was initially imprinted in it

After he thought he killed the real Batman Yeah,

and so that was great watching him go over there

destroy the bat computer. Just utterly just smash

the shit out of it and then He gets destroyed

by being blasted into the Batmobile. Yeah, I

remember seeing this episode as a kid and not

even You know thinking about it that it was a

essentially a third part to Heart of Steel But

I remember just watching it for the sake of watching

it as a kid and on I was on a rerun or someone

on Fox and Or it might have been its first airing.

I can't remember and They in the very beginning

when he gets damaged It doesn't cuz cuz you don't

know go going into this episode unless you've

seen it before or unless you've seen heart of

steel or Whatever you don't realize What's going

on so that first initial damaging of the duplicate

and being like holy shit? Why is Batman a robot?

You know? Yeah. That kind of freaked me out as

a kid. I wish they would have made a toy of this.

You know, with the half robotic, half normal

with the red eyes. That would have been just

awesome. Yes, that would have been cool. Getting

into some production notes. You know, of course,

the creation of the Batman duplicate was first

shown in Heart of Steel, albeit briefly. There

were production inconsistencies, namely the countdown

displayed in the bat computer changes from red

to gray throughout Batman's fight with the Batman

Duplicant. The trivia pieces, which this is kind

of interesting, the Batman Duplicant's face being

half destroyed by a chemical thrown at him is

reminiscent of Two -Face's mainstream comics

facial scarring instead of the DC animated universe

version or the Nolan. Hmm, that's interesting.

That makes sense though. Yeah, but it was kind

of just interesting how you know, it was exactly

split down the middle Not not a little bit torn

over the edge. No, it was just perfectly straight

down the middle Yeah Hardex plan to take over

the defense systems of the world in order to

gain control of it is similar to that of as you

said it before Skynet And then the questioning

whether or not the synthetic life forms have

souls is a key part of the Philip K. Dick story,

Do Andres Dream of Electric Sheep? Which, yeah,

they kind of basically say that in the last line

of the episode that Batman says. Yeah, does he

really have a soul? I really dug this one. Like

I said, I thought it was well -paced. I thought

it was well animated. The fights were great.

Overall, a really great episode. Mm -hmm. So,

with that, we'll be moving on. What's keeping

him? Commissioner Gordon? Forget it, Stavros.

Your meeting's been cancelled. He's on his way,

boss. Silence! First you transgress against me,

then you force me to descend to the mortal plane,

and now you say I know not what I think? No!

To the depths of Tartarus with you! Next up is

Fire from Olympus. Ow, my head. Okay. Commissioner

Gordon waits for an informant outside the...

Zorbis? Unbeknownst to him, however, the informant,

Yanni Stavaros, is being chased by a couple of

thugs. They inform him that his meeting's been

cancelled, and they chase him towards their boss.

He is finally cornered in an alley, filled with

old tires. The boss comes out of his car, and

Stavaros pleads with him. However, his words

make the boss even angrier that he defied him.

Forced him to come to the mortal plane, and thus...

claims that he doesn't know what he thinks. He

condemns Starvos to Tartarus and a bolt of electricity

strikes. This is the most batshit retarded episode,

although it makes more sense than any of the

weird creature episodes. No, I'm sorry. I would

rather watch this over the creature episodes.

I would rather watch Moon of the Wolf. I would

rather watch this over Moon in the Bowl. No.

Not at all. But that's only because I like Greek

mythology. I like Greek mythology too, but not

to this stupidity. This episode is so stupid.

Oh, God. This was just retarded because Batman

goes up to Maxie Zeus, owner of Maximilian Shipping,

up on the top floor and... He starts talking

to him like oh Hades. How's it been blah blah

blah? It's just I don't know. He's just it's

a delusional retard it I Don't know it was so

stupid I'm not a fan of this character whatsoever

me either. He's just a deranged moron with Actually

mental issues. Yes, I'm like the other villains

where they're just they know what they're doing

This is nice. Yeah, this guy's just nuts literally

and It was nice to see Batman, you know electrocute

him and let him go to Arkham and of course he's

naming all the villains as he goes in the trickster

as he goes past Joker and you know Just you know

and then makes fun of all the different villains

But basically as he walks past them calling them

different Greek names, it was just it was stupid

But he yeah, I'll get into those the different

references that he actually called them later

Yeah, I just don't This is not an episode. I

will ever watch ever again So bad, it's just

let's go ahead and get into the info already

Starpost file is listed as a resident of Gotham

City, New York, but his zip code is 90068, the

zip code of Los Angeles. And Batman and Mr. Freeze

Sub -Zero, Barbara Gordon and Dean Arbogast were

given zip codes in New York, starting with 100.

Which, that's just, I don't know, that's just

something. It's something too particular somebody

had to set their notice. Maxie Zeus recognizes

Two -face as Janus Janus was a god of Roman mythology

not Greek. It does not have a Greek equivalent

similarly Maxi mentions Lord Vulcan, which is

the Roman name for Hephaestus So there were some

writing inconsistencies with the difference here

and the sad thing is these the writers that wrote

it as a married couple I think and They normally

write pretty consistently in books. However,

this yeah, that's kind of major Garfield and

Judith Stevens, yes Some of the cultural references

which gets into more of the That crap the hydro,

you know, of course was the mini -headed dragon

Trying to see how that actually pertains to this

episode but yeah Maxie Zeus calls Demeter poison

ivy Or, you know poison ivy Demeter or whatever.

Yes He calls the Joker Hermes for being a trickster

and a thief. Yes. Well, that kind of makes sense

as a reference, not only to pop culture, but

also to bad culture, because Mark was the Twick.

The trickster in the Flash. Yes, he was the trickster

in the Flash cartoon, or not the Flash cartoon,

the Flash television show and Justice League

Unlimited. And Hades is kind of, you know, reminiscent

of Batman in the sense that he's, you know, the

lord of the darkness, essentially. Yeah, that's

all I'm getting into with the mythology. That's

just getting too convoluted. Yes, it is. The

two trivia bits we have is, fittingly Stavros

is captured next to the Zorbis, which is Greek

letters omega and alpha in the title. The name

is derived from a novel called Zorba the Greek

by Naikos. I can't pronounce that last name.

Maxi's line, look on my works ye mighty, and

despair comes from Percy Bysshelly's Oz? Ozomandias?

A poem telling of human hubris. We'll just skip

that because that's stupid. Yeah, pretty much.

Now this episode basically sucked. Yeah, let's

move on. Yes, let's. What a bad night's take!

went down smooth, Scarface, just like you said.

That's just the beginning, boys. Soon we're gonna

own this town. Last up for the day is Read My

Lips. After a boxing match, the take is... transported

through the halls and instantly robbed by a trio

of muggers. The muggers make a clean getaway

by climbing an air vent then jumping into a getaway

truck. They then go to their boss Scarface who

claims they'll own the town soon. The gang goes

on a crime spree leaving the police baffled.

The funny part about it is I love when they're

doing the newspaper reveals where it's spinning

because it kind of is reminiscent of the 66 Batman.

yes that was awesome that i caught that reference

like right away i think everybody's gonna catch

that reference right away it was like and then

it shows it it was it was great this was an interesting

episode to say the least yeah this was a very

interesting episode actually the last two even

though we don't like fire from olympus or fired

on olympus or You're fired, and kiss my ass club,

and all those other Vince McMahon things. Anyway,

the interesting thing about Fire from Olympus

and Read My Lips is they both deal with mental

illness, essentially. Because the dummy, as Scarface

so puts it, has multiple personality disorder.

Yes. Yes, he does. So there's that, and it's

very strange to see. Like, I watch Jeff Dunham

all the time, so I know what a vent act is. For

those of you who don't know what vent means,

it's ventriloquist. But the dummy doesn't move,

like... That's the whole point of being a ventriloquist

is you're not supposed to see your lips the the

person's lips move But the dummy does such a

great job of it Because it's animation. I know

it's animation, but I'm just saying that it's

a very well done job of not You know not even

making a mistake about it You know this episode

was just fantastic because at first I don't know

what the hell is going on And again Batman gets,

you know thrown for a loop with this which I

thought was kind of cool Yeah, this this episode

was certainly interesting and I I like the fact

that um You know, they mentioned that he is multiple

multiple personality disorder And and so he doesn't

even know until he's ready I thought it was also

interesting that the ventriloquist and Scarface

are played by the same guy Yeah, yeah, they are

that's George de Zunda. Yep So yeah that that

was kind of interesting I Thought it was really

funny toward the end though when Scarface orders

Batman killed and all that and Batman starts

throwing his voice acting like the ventriloquist

To throw Scarface off and then he cuts off Scarface's

hand That's Yeah, that is so funny, and then

they blow up Scarface and then of course the

ventriloquist is carving a new one in jail my

one is not necessarily a gripe but if this dude

is severely mentally ill like he's supposed to

be or has this disorder they would never give

him a knife they would yeah he was turning to

zazz would never give him a sharp object he would

become victor zazz Overall, I really enjoyed

this one, too. So... Yes. So, uh, with that,

we'll be back after the commercial break. Legends

of the Dark Knight will be back after this. Welcome

back with Legends of the Dark Knight. So, how

would you rate your... top five for the episode.

I liked Demon's Quest two -parter because it

is two individual episodes but it is a two -part

story. I liked both of them equally but I would

put part two ahead of part one. So my order would

be Demon's Quest part two. his silicon soul,

Demon's Quest Part 1, Read My Lips, and then

Fire from Olympus can die in a fire. What about

you? Myself, I would put his silicon soul as

number one, Demon's Quest Part 2 as my second,

Demon's Quest Part 1 as my third, Read My Lips

as number four, and Fire from Olympus and the

Fire of Olympus. I mean number five. Yes. Awesome.

Yes. So with that, we'll get into the outro.
