About this Episode

The team reviews three episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. They discuss the Riddler's debut and origin in 'If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?', the chaotic events of 'Joker's Wild' involving a casino and an insurance scam, and express their dislike for the splicing plotline featured in 'Tyger, Tyger'.

You're listening to Legends of the Dark Knight,

only on the Geekcast Radio Network. Hello and

welcome to Legends of the Dark Knight. I'm your

host, Steve Megatron Phillips. Joining me in

this journey into Gotham City are the dynamic

duo. DFT1 Mike. And Tara, the rising star. Hello.

What's up, guys? Hey. Not much. Not too much.

Just sitting here chilling. And Mike doesn't

sound any enthusiastic whatsoever, and Tara sounds

very enthusiastic. It's a Monday night. It's

Monday, damn it. Leave me alone. Give him some

slack. I can't do that. You can't do that? Why

not? I'm just not that nice. Don't you have a

dinosaur to go play with? Don't tempt me. Oh,

no it's not. Well, it's officially a week before

my birthday. I'm excited. Yay. Yay. It's Monday,

March 19th, and tomorrow's the 20th, and... I

just want to give a little shout out. It's my

really good friend Cassie's birthday tomorrow.

She's turning 21 and our birthdays are a week

apart. And I just want to wish her a happy 21st,

Cass. I know you don't listen to this podcast,

but I'm just going to give you a shout out anyway.

So yeah, happy birthday, Cass. But now that I

give you a shout out, you have to listen. So

you're going to listen. Yeah. Let's see, what

have I been up to? Podcasting as always. As everyone

knows, here on Legends of the Dark Knight we

will be covering BTIS, the movies, and Batman

Beyond as well. I just recorded over the weekend

an episode of Animation Aficionados with Neil

and Ben on Batman Beyond and... it's a good thing

i was recording the entire episode because my

plug for this podcast didn't make it into their

version of their recording so i sent neil my

version so yeah i wonder why oh stop it uh so

i've done that i'm prepping for um interviewing

dan gilvazan voice of spider -man and g1 bumblebee

uh this coming week um lining up a whole bunch

of other stuff as well For geek cast radio network,

and we'll just see what happens then But you

Steve um well as we said off -air Tara and I

are Kind of planning out the the reboot podcast

later on this year excited Which she will be

front -running I will be running shotgun Yes,

this is my first time hosting a podcast like

officially hosting a podcast on the geek cast

radio network And I'm pretty excited Consider

your cherry broken. Oh No pun intended Wow It's

okay this podcast is really explicit it's okay

like all the rest here. Yeah Yeah, so to like

just give a little plug in, we're going to be

doing a reboot podcast, which is going to be

pretty exciting. It's called Rebooting Mainframe.

And for those of you who don't know, Reboot was

this really awesome first CG, completely CG animated

show. about the inhabitants of Inside a Computer

and all the fun stuff that goes inside, like

all that kind of fun stuff. We'll get more into

that in the Tooncast Beyond Delorean Record,

where we actually dedicate a whole episode to

the whole reboot franchise. Which that'll serve

as a nice episode zero to kind of do an overview.

So yeah, so I'm not going to bore you with giving

you an overview now, but just to give a little,

you know. teaser it is coming so all you reboot

fans out there we have something for you coming

up very shortly and very excited yes and also

there's you know a bunch of new things in the

works for GeekCast Radio which will be announced

probably sometime in April because at the end

of the month we're having a powwow kind of figuring

out what the hell we're gonna do for the future

so the future the future future is very imperfect

oh god can we get into some episodes now yes

let's get into some no more lord of the rings

puns please even though i love that franchise

just no more i guess we will yes Miss Welbeck?

Yes, Mr. Mockridge? Has Edward Nigma come in

yet? I don't think so. Good. If you need me,

I'll be down on the eighth floor. What's going

on here? Where's my office? My door was right

here. Was is right. What's the meaning of this?

What does it look like, Eddie? You're out of

here. You're history. You're fired. Comprende?

Have you lost what passes for your mind? You

can't afford to do without me, Muckridge. I can't

if you're gonna sue me for royalties. I created

the riddle of the Minotaur game. This company

is making millions from my genius. Competitron

Software's success didn't come from the product,

Nigma. Competitron has a corporate attitude.

Its strength is in the boardroom, the deal, the

contract. Specifically, the work -for -hire contract

you signed. You are a fool, Mockridge, to think

you can get away with this. Your amoral greed

is no match for an intellect like mine. Oh, yeah?

Then tell me something, Eddie. If you're so smart,

why aren't you rich? First up today is If You're

So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich? Software designer

Edward Nygma returns to his office and finds

it locked. His boss, Daniel Mackeridge, smugly

informs him that he has been fired. Nygma protests,

saying that the company Competitron, is now making

millions from the computer game he designed,

Riddle of the Minotaur. Mockridge eerily dismisses

this and reveals that quite a while ago, he tricked

Nigma into signing a contract that did not give

him any royalties or copyrights to the game in

order to secure the vast fortune for himself.

Nigma challenges that Mockridge's greed is no

match for his genius, to which Mockridge responds,

if you're so rich, er, no, if you're so smart,

why aren't you rich? I love this episode. I do

as well. One of the reasons why I love this episode

is because it gives Robin a chance to shine.

Oh yeah. Lauren Lester! Shout out to Lauren right

there. And it's written by David Wise. Yeah,

very cool. So what are some of your guys' favorite

parts of this episode? I really like the whole...

Going into the maze part the live action part

where they're in the actual maze The attraction

I guess it's at the amusement park if I'm correct

Yeah, I thought that was pretty cool I liked

how he brought the brittle the minotaur to life

and how Batman and Robin were kind of stuck in

the maze and Robin kind of you know gets a Batman

out of trouble in the maze, but then with the

whole hand of fate thing. I love how Batman was

able to, you know, reconfigure it so it would

take him directly to the center of the maze.

And because at the beginning, I think the Riddler

makes them both drop their utility belts before

they go on the maze. So it's kind of like, you

know, a whole, you know, well, screw you, Riddler.

I can still use my palm top computer and my handy

dandy glove. So that's what I thought was pretty

cool. I really like that part and just the whole

episode was really really interesting I like

the whole plot and just going to the Riddler

for the first time was awesome because the Riddler

is one of the most iconic Batman villains He's

especially heinous in the video game series right

now But I really like him just seeing him for

the first time was awesome and this episode was

definitely definitely gave him a good intro i

think what do you guys think yeah oh yeah most

definitely and plus you know even though a lot

of us as kids that when we saw this as kids probably

didn't know this but um you know john glover

voicing riddler is just superb casting for this

because you know later on he would go on to play

lionel luther in smallville and a bunch of other

stuff and His voice just so fits the personality

of Edward Nygma. Yeah, it 100 % does. I couldn't

see anybody else voicing him. And I mean, going

back to the actual plot, I mean, when he found

out he signed that contract, I mean, man, that

has got to suck. Yeah, that's a slap in the face

right there. And I kind of don't blame him, though,

for going after Mockridge. I really don't. I

mean, if you look at it, almost every Batman

villain has been screwed by somebody, and that's

why they become what they become, because someone

screwed them over. So it's nothing different

here with the Riddler getting screwed over by

his boss, by a greedy corporate bastard. Right,

yeah. So it's the same theme. But yeah, I really

loved the episode. What about you, Steve? This

episode for me is is one of and before I like

the Joker this This episode in the the future

episode with the riddler num both Cemented this

character in my brain. I had this toy before

I had the Joker Because actually I didn't have

one until recent that riddler I just I not only

love the design of it, but I love the how John

Glover portrays the character. I love the whole,

you know, kind of smart -ass tone that he kind

of holds, the kind of smugness that, you know,

I'm so much better than you type. So I mean,

that character for me that just, it just puts

it over the edge, makes it more memorable to

me. And then of course you have Robin who's playing

this video game, you know, on Bruce's computer.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, it had to have been a

Robin -centric episode because, you know, Bruce...

Bruce wouldn't have to play that. He wouldn't

care to. I mean, that's just... So having a younger

player in the game kind of helps things. And

then when they're actually in the maze, Bruce

is like, so what happens here? And he says, I

don't know. Nobody's ever gotten this far. And

then he says, oh, that's comforting, you know,

and they just kind of go on from there. But I

mean, it's... I love the... the many different

tones that are in this episode. Just overall,

I love this episode, I can't really say anything

bad about it because it's on so many different

levels. You've got your revenge, your smart -ass

tree, puzzles, you've got your bit of action,

but most of it is Robin helping Batman because

Batman has no clue what the hell is going on.

Well, yeah, because I mean, as you just said,

you have a little bit of everything that makes

a Batman episode a Batman episode. You have the

action, you have, you know, the intelligence

of trying to figure out what the problem is and

how to fix the problem and how to catch the criminal

and all that. And you have character development

with, you know, Robin showing off that he's a

techie. Not to be confused with Trekkie. You

had to make that pun. Of course. Of course he

does. So yeah, overall, If You're So Smart, Why

Aren't You Rich is a very, very good episode,

I think. And getting into some of the trivia.

The Riddle of the Minotaur Maze was adapted into

the first stage of the Riddler level in the Super

Nintendo game, The Adventures of Batman and Robin.

The final challenge is the same riddle as in

the episode, which the player may solve by entering

the letters HB. In the scene where Batman and

Robin first come across the maze in an amusement

park, the word sex can be seen in the background.

and E are part of the name of a carnival attraction

while the X is hidden as part of the scaffolding

that appears just behind it. Hidden pranks like

this are often done by studio animators as inside

jokes amongst themselves. Oh man, just like in

Disney, right? Yes. Just like in Disney. Maybe

it was some fired Disney people. I wouldn't be

surprised. The sound effects used in the the

riddle of the Minotaur game are directly taken

from the NES game. Super Mario Brothers sweet,

so there's a little bit of a you know gaming

nod to to those So I guess Nintendo gave them

permission to do that or they just did it You

never know oh sure hopefully there wasn't a lawsuit

involved with that I doubt it. I'm sure see Shigeru

Miyamoto was fine with that some of the the memorable

quotes from the episode You have the riddler

saying, my my, can we actually have a brain beneath

that pointy cowl of ours? So tell me, have you

the brawn to match? I love the exchange between

Robin and Batman about what's as high as an elephant's

eye and it's corn and maize and all. I love that

exchange. That's so funny between the two of

them. That reminds me of, holy rusted metal,

Batman. Huh? What? The ground, it's full of holes

and it's rusted metal. I think it's sad to be

honest like in this episode. It's sad because

they make Batman look kind of stupid Well, he's

not entirely stupid because it's it's just as

far as the game is Yeah, but there there are

gonna be certain things that Bruce Wayne Batman

does not yes He does know most everything but

there's gonna be certain things that he just

does not know Like, games. I mean, if there's

a riddle in it, he'll figure it out. But if it's,

like, as far as, you know... I mean, some of

it in this game, or in the game that the... For

instance, that same quote Mike was talking about.

What's as high as an elephant's eye? And then

Batman says, corn. Robin says, corn. Batman says

it's an old lyric before your time. Robin says,

so what's he saying? Mockeridge is corny? Or

is in the corn? Batman's like, what is another

word for corn? And then Robin starts, you know,

saying Colonel and Cob and Batman says Maze.

And then Robin's like, Maze at the amusement

park. And he's like, exactly, you know. So, I

mean, it's it's it's a lot of give and take between

the two. So, I mean, it's not that one's dumber

than the other. It's just that they need each

other because they think alike. That's true,

because I mean, Batman was really thrown out

of his element here. If you think about it. Oh,

yeah. And he will be again the next time he battles

the Riddler. Yeah, he always is though, because

the Riddler is just, yeah, he likes to toy with

him. But yeah, I just, still, I think it's funny,

like I said earlier, how Batman kinda screws,

kinda screws over the Riddler when he like, you

know, hijacks the hand of fate and takes it right

to the middle of the maze. After the Riddler

had carefully, you know, planned out the whole

maze and then, you know, at the end when you

find out that the Riddler's not even in the amusement

park anymore, he's like, in a helicopter. Know

it's like oh, okay So you're not even here. They're

like, you know witness me like, you know doing

all this shit for you And it's it it's kind of

funny how they end it though. Yeah, you know

Robin's kind of cranky that Mockridge got off

and you know Batman's saying, you know The fact

that the Riddler is still at large and it's terrifying

Mockridge To the point he's hiding Under his

bed and hiding under his covers and Then you

have Bruce's final start, you know kind of sarcastic

riddle How much is a good night's sleep? Yeah

Yeah, so I mean just perfectly done. It's true

though. Like I mean Mockridge asked for it though

because I mean now he knows now he knows that

Nigma is like never ever gonna let this go like

now he knows like he's been he's a marked man

if that's I'm describing him right. He is a marked

man. Yeah, and don't think we've seen the last

of Mockridge and Nigma if I remember correctly

I think this is the last we see of Mockridge.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he doesn't come back. Yeah,

almost But he's mentioned in what is reality.

Yeah, he's not actually back. I think he just

This is just mentioned. It's a mention. He's

not even worth bringing back. Nah, no. Well,

I mean, they've already told the story of dealing

with him. That's true, yeah. I mean, there's

really no... You know, Riddler already tried

to get revenge on him. There's no sense in redoing

the entire episode. Well, he's the origin story.

That's all he's good for. Yeah. But, yeah. So,

anything else on this one? No, it was a good

episode. Yeah, that's it. Then we'll be moving

on. Make sure the bulbs are spaced far enough

apart for proper root growth. And remember to

give the seedlings plenty of sunlight. And just

enough water. Then... Hey! I was watching that!

And now you're watching this! Next! A dog drinks

milk out of its owner's mouth. Change it back!

Oh, no, no, no, no. Don't want to. Guard! What's

the problem? Don't look now, Sonny Jim. But the

plant lady's gone wackers again. He started it.

I was just sitting here. That's right. You're

always blaming me. And the children wonder why

we fight. Crazy. I know you are, but what am

I? Okay, okay. You'll watch this quietly, or

you'll go back to your cells. I don't care. You

hold my hand and I'll slug you. Guard! Just kidding,

just kidding! Heesh, Pammy, lighten up! This

is Summer Gleason live at Gotham Palisades Boardwalk.

where it's opening day at billionaire Cameron

Kaiser's latest showplace resort. Total price

tag for this fun -seekers mecca, nearly 300 million

dollars. It's true, Summer. I set out to create

the most opulent gambling resort in the world.

After all, what's a few million here and there

as long as my guests are happy? Gotham's elite

have turned out in style for the opening. Bruce

Wayne, perhaps you can give us a hint about the

top -secret theme of Mr. Kaiser's new casino.

Looks like we'll find out together, Summer. Ladies

and gentlemen, the wait is over. I officially

welcome you, one and all... to Joker's Wild!

Say what? from the guests mr. Wayne no comment

mr. Kaiser why build a casino seemingly in honor

of one of history's most notorious outlaws summer

please my Joker is a classic symbol long associated

with cards and games I can't help it if there's

a passing resembles to some criminal fruitcake

Up next is Joker's Wild. An argument over the

TV erupts in the record of an Arkham Asylum between

Poison Ivy and the Joker. The nearest guard Irving

breaks it up and changes the channel at random,

hitting on a news report about the opening of

a billionaire Cameron Kaiser's latest luxury

casino outside Gotham City. The theme of the

casino has been carefully kept secret. Kaiser

snips the ribbon and everyone is shocked to see

the new casino dubbed Joker's Wild. complete

with a laughing effigy of Joker's head on top.

Kaiser laughs off the idea that he is honoring

Joker, instead saying that he is playing tribute

to the symbol's classic roots. We can't help

it if there's a passing resemblance to some criminal

fruitcake, at which an outraged Joker hurls Ivy's

potted plant through the TV, shouting, how dare

that smug pruning fool try to cash in on my image!

So this was a very interesting episode and quite

a tongue twister to read The description of it

so much going on I really like this episode just

because we get to see the Joker again and it

has a casino theme and It just it was so funny.

There were so many things in this episode. I

just loved it was well written and Just getting

to see Joker in Arkham Asylum, in the beginning

just having a fight with Poison Ivy over the

TV. And he just smashes the TV with her plant.

It was just hilarious in my opinion. And then

to see him, how he escapes from Arkham Asylum,

to go to the casino. And because the casino is

called Joker's Wild and all the casino operators

are dressed as the Joker, He managed to get in

without a hitch. Well, it wasn't intentional

on his part. That's just the way it happened.

Yeah, it was just the way it happened. I mean,

I just thought it was pretty ironic, though,

that he was able to sneak in without really getting,

you know, Oh my God, it's the Joker. You know,

but he wasn't really noticed until he started

doing really well when he was dealing. Think

Kaiser right right right it's Kaiser right yeah,

then Kaiser's like you know let him keep playing

he's like He's here. He's gonna. He's gonna destroy

this casino time for me to you know get out of

here Because we find out later in the episode

that he had planned this all along You know he

planned this because he basically went broke

Trying to build this casino When that and then

when Bruce sorry when Batman does some investigating

and finds out that it was originally gonna be

Camelot and not joker's wild He's like hmm Why

would he change it from Camelot to this and then

we insurance money insurance? It's always some

kind of insurance scam. Yeah always some kind

of insurance scam and Then when the Joker finds

out, you know, like holy shit. I've been you

know used He's like, oh, I'm not gonna blow up

this place. I'm gonna just you know kill kaiser

and i find that hilarious like it was just it

was just pretty funny i mean it it added that

whole uh i love it when they incorporate casinos

and you know funny stuff like that into the batman

animated series just like you know new in different

locations because it kind of adds you know kind

of adds to the whole you know crime thing and

i yeah and i thought the combination of joker

and that casino was just perfect because the

Joker card and, you know, in most card games

and stuff like that. I just thought it was a

very good mix and it was just a really, really

well -rounded episode and it definitely keeps

you on your toes and you definitely don't get

bored of it. And yeah, not much else to say,

but I enjoyed it. So what did you think, Mike?

I thought it was a great episode. you know when

it boils down to it yeah sure it is just an insurance

scam but the fact that someone has the gall to

just throw something in the Joker's face and

essentially call him out as being just some low

-life criminal it just sets him on a path of

like I'm going to destroy you Don't don't piss

off the Joker before don't piss off the Joker

Exactly. What about you Steve? Well, first of

all, I love any time the Joker shows up because

he's just He's hilarious I and I love the fact

that they that Kaiser did this just to piss the

Joker off and to get the money, of course, but

You know knowing full well the Joker Doesn't

like people mocking him. Mm -hmm, and I like

the fact that you know Bruce is going into this

casino to kind of look at it and Sees that everybody's

looking like the Joker and Then he eventually,

you know pulls one over on the Joker winning

at blackjack which you know pisses the Joker

off I mean, it's just, it's hilarious that they

turned this whole episode into a giant gimmick

against the Joker. Yeah. Just to have him come

crash in the party. It seems the joke was on

him, no pun intended. Oh yeah. But I like the

fact that, you know, Joker is in this episode.

I love the title because of the word plan. Actual

card games like you guys said and They have the

Joker mobile Yeah The original Joker mobile didn't

even know we had one. Yeah Thank God Bruce Tim

has a brain and I don't mean that to be insulting

to the man but As a production note for this,

the animation for this episode was actually so

bad that Bruce Timm cited it as being so bad

that production team would no longer work with

ACOM. Why were you working with ACOM in the first

place? Yeah, because when Joker starts his car,

which is on the display, he removes a... placard

which is supposed to say when the original joker

mobile but because of the unfamiliar arity with

english script of the japanese animators it says

when the karen ganal joker noko yeah which that's

hilarious yeah it is hilarious but it's like

oh god And then there's you know, a bunch of

production inconsistencies like the Joker's dark

circles around his eyes disappearing off and

on and then Batman taking his grapple out of

his belt with the compartment being Massively

larger than physically possible. Mm -hmm You

know, so I mean It's I don't know. It's just

so stupid but I I do like The fact that they

insinuate in this one again that you know because

Batman Flips through the files and Kaiser's desk

it states that the Joker's real name is Jack

Napier Yeah, which is really an alias. Yeah,

well yes, and no that's his most commonly used

name I Don't know his real name. I don't think

anyone knows his real name That's the point.

But that's his most commonly used name. Yeah,

it's Jack Nappier. Well, see, here's the thing.

Like, Joe Chill was the one that actually killed

Bruce's parents in the comics, as far as I know

from what I've heard from a bunch of comic people

that I've talked to in the past. It was. But

in order for the popularity... to happen with

Batman 89, they had to simplify. I mean, it's

just like when they take, you know, Tower of

Babel and they have to simplify it for a direct

-to -DVD cartoon movie. Same thing. They had

to simplify the story to fit the movie at the

time. So that's why Jack Napier is often confused

as being, it's one of the Joker's alias. It's

not his actual name, though. No, but it's his

major alias. Right. Yeah. So that's why everybody

confuses it. Yeah. But it was nice to see another

nod to that piece of information. Yeah. As far

as some of the trivia, Joker changes the recording

room TV channel to The David Letterman Show.

I noticed that. The episode of The David Letterman

Show that Joker watches is later watched by The

Parasite in the Superman The Animated Series

episode, Double Dose. That's some stock reuse.

Oh yes, that must have been a rerun in Superman

The Animated Series for David Letterman. The

Parasite. Yeah, in Superman the animated series

parasite is this guy who essentially sucks the

life energy out of people The one bit I love

and I'm gonna actually have to go back and grab

the original audio for Steve to put in here is

Joker uses the line of the Looney Tunes character

beaky buzzard. Oh, no, no, no, no, no don't want

to so I've got that episode on iTunes So I'm

gonna have to go back and grab that You guys

know anything else you want to add? Some of the

quotes are interesting. There's one where the

Joker's in prison with Ivy and he says, you hold

my hand and I'll slug you. And then he goes,

ha! And then Poison Ivy goes, guard! Because

she's just physically irritated with him. Because

he keeps pissing her off. Well, that's the fun

of the Joker. Yeah. And then the part when he

sees the casino. How dare that smug, pretty fool

try to crash in on my image! Mm -hmm. And then

poison Ivy. Now who should lighten up? Don't

get cute with me, Red! He's ripping me off! He

says, I'll protest. Yeah, I'll sue. Then I'll

rip his lungs out. And I will, too. Jumping Jiminy

Christmas, it's an homage to me. I'm kind of

sorry I have to blow it up. No, try this at home,

kids. Course breaking the fourth wall And this

and then where the Joker talks to Bruce say don't

I know you sure Bruce Wayne And so this is how

your family made all those billions Yeah, this

is the secrets out and you are oh just a nameless

clown shuffling my wife my life away Is too bad

it has to be in such gruesome surroundings and

then Joker fumbles the pack then recovers Don't

care for the decor. Bruce Wayne's like, not hardly.

All those horrible faces grinning at me. That

would do things to my mind after a while. Who

says you have one? Yeah, that was hilarious.

I just, the Joker has, you know, a bunch of funny

ass lines in this. And then, you know, why can't

he ever stay dead? That's right, chew him up

and spit him out. Ah, you bunch of no -goo -to

-whacked -out -losers, you make me sick. I just

love the Joker. He's got a lot of smart -ass

lines. Yeah. Oh, he does. And Gat Hamill portrays

them as tenfold to anybody else that could do

it. Mark Hamill, you never cease to amaze me.

Yes, Mark Hamill is awesome. I think that's it,

though. I really do like this episode, and it's

very entertaining to watch. And of course, Paul

Dini wrote it, so of course, there's going to

be a lot of sarcastic remarks on the Joker's

behalf. Just like he had in the Arkham games

because of Dini. Yeah, it was just a fantastic

episode just to watch. Anything else from you,

Mike? I think that's it. Alright, okay. So, moving

on to the next episode. Don't tell me I only

work here Hello handsome It's criminal to keep

you like this if I had my way you'd be running

free and the humans who did this would be put

in here Relax and go sleepy -bye. I won't let

you hurt the tiger. I wasn't sent here after

the tiger, lady. Okay, Romeo, take it somewhere

else. The zoo's closed. What in the name of...

Now we have Tiger Tiger. Oh god, somebody shoot

me. A security guard arrives and sees the sniper

carrying off Selena and is horrified by his gorilla

-like appearance. The guard is shoved to the

tiger pit and the sniper runs off with Selena.

Oh my god. This episode sucks. You're like, do

we really have to review this right now? Yeah,

that's really all we need. This episode sucks.

Let's move on. No, we've got to talk about it,

unfortunately. We actually have to delve into

it, man. We can delve into it. I'm gonna skip

the next three I would but being that this has

to be a complete show Other than the last two

episodes We still have to talk about them Like

doesn't mean I can't cry while I talk about them.

I mean this episode was just so dumb I mean they

were bad, but I mean they weren't like so so

bad No, this episode is horrible. I mean this

is this episode essentially Gives us the beginning

of splicing. I mean technically you could argue

On leather wings did with the man bat But I mean

really this is the one that really shows off

the whole splicing technique that will be founded

in Batman Beyond later Well, and they can talk

for one in their spliced form. So this this actually

is more so than You know right, but I mean like

that's not the the splicing stuff in beyond actually

came from parts of of Langstrom's research anyway

This one is just Why does this like I know Catwoman

wants to protect all cats and everything else,

but seriously? Why did they have to do this?

She looks awful Yes, I agree. I was quite disturbed

to see them do this to Selena. I felt so bad

for her. I'm like, poor Selena. Get back in your

cat -woman suit. We don't want to see you as

an actual cat. Yeah. We love you, but we don't

want to see you as an actual, you know, human

slash cat person. Does not work for you. Hybrid.

Yeah, and then to be crushed on by some creepy,

genetically mutated tiger. Tigress. Which I thought,

I will admit this, I actually thought it was

a girl. Because it's Tigress. Like, it doesn't

sound like a very masculine, masculine name.

If you want to name. Well, maybe he went to go

buy a blue prayer. Sure. But I mean, he kind

of named him like, you know, something other

than Tigress, because when you hear Tigress,

you're like, oh, it's a girl. Yeah. Oh, this

is a man. Like, I'm like, okay, this is awkward.

Steve, any thoughts? Oh man, this one just, it

kills me to watch this, but I kind of feel bad

for Tiger String part of the episode just because,

you know, his quote unquote father figure. He's

kind of a douche and just worried about doing

his experiments and everything else. And, you

know, Tigress is seeing Selina as this, you know,

kind of equal. And he's kind of caught between

a rock and a hard place, but this, I don't know,

it's just, it's kind of a weird episode all around.

I've never been quite a fan of the splicing thing

anyway. I didn't particularly care for it beyond

I Liked it in I but I liked it with those characters

that they used in beyond but here it makes no

damn sense It's better executed in beyond I can

see you know I mean back then they didn't have

beyond even in the planning phases So this this

was just one of those off shot episodes that

ultimately doesn't matter and it kind of screws

up Selena's character Yeah Because you know eventually

later. They never actually reference this crap

again. This is just kind of a throwaway But I

It's not I mean obviously not one of my favorites,

but it's Just the only the only thing worthwhile

about this episode is you have Jim Cummings voicing

three different characters in it Yeah, that's

pretty much it I'm going to blast through the

trivia here because there really isn't much and

I just want to get through this. We just want

to get through the episode. Yeah, pretty much.

There are obvious parallels with the classic

science fiction novel, The Island of Doctor Moreau.

The episode's title refers to the first dance

of William Blake's famous poem, The Tiger, quoted

by both Dr. Dorian and Batman, Tiger, Tiger Burning

Bright in the... Forests of the night what immortal

hand or I could frame by the fearful cemetery

the framed by the fearful cemetery now the phrase

fearful symmetry Was likewise used as the title

of an episode in Justice League Unlimited. So

that was very very cool And as Steve said, you

know, the fact that Jim Cummings does three different

voices in here is is great I mean, this is I

know this is not the episode that has the least

of the voice cast, but it's one of those ones

that has not very many voice actors in it. I

mean, um, but yeah, no. I think we're gonna go

ahead and move on. This is just torture. Thank

you! Hey, what's with you? I ain't got all night,

you know. looking for, try starting one with

me! So we go from cats to dogs now, with Moon

of the Wolf. Oh god, somebody shoot me now. It's

a peaceful night in Gotham Park, and a man, John

Hammer, quietly walks his dog. The dog, however,

starts to get agitated and growls at an unseen

creature. The man dismisses the dog's fears,

but he is soon confronted by a hulking man -wolf.

The werewolf prefers to kill the man, but Batman

arrives and saves him. The werewolf, however,

manages to escape. Dun, dun, dun. Um, yeah, this

episode sucks too. It's nice that I... I think?

Isn't this the introduction of Dr. Milo? I think

so, yes. Was he in other episodes? Let me actually

look at his character really quickly. Tara, what

are your initial thoughts on Moon of the Wolf?

On this episode? Yes. No comment. Actually, no,

I do have a comment. I do have a comment. It

was... It was not good. It was just not a good

episode. It was just, like, kind of... Blah,

I guess. I mean, I'm sure there's people out

there who really enjoy this episode, but for

me I Didn't really enjoy it. It just didn't do

that much for me. I found it I mean it wasn't

as boring to watch as Tiger Tiger Because it

had some action in it which which actually, you

know kept me awake for the most part, but It

just just didn't do that much for me. It just

it's not a good episode Before you go Steve,

Milo worked for Daggett at first, so he's appeared

already. He was in Cat Scratch Fever. Yeah. And

he's in Justice League Unlimited in the Doomsday

Sanction. Yep. Working for Cadmus. Yep. Oh my

god. I don't particularly care for him. The only

beneficial part is later on he's voiced by Quark

from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Yeah. Mike hates

this episode so much, he didn't even finish reading

the description. I only read the first paragraph,

that's all it's getting. I just had to throw

that out there. This episode is so boring. It

just is. I think Steve said off air he fell asleep

watching it. No, I did. No, that was Tara. I

had a hard time getting through it, is what I

said. He just felt like he was watching a boring

lecture. It's it's not as bad as the previous

episode like I said off -air. It's not it's I

can sit through this one a little easier the

previous one I just I hated it when it aired

originally on TV Yeah, this one I still wasn't

particularly fine because I believe they they

aired similar in dates somewhere around Yeah,

I think they aired back -to -back or they reran

back -to -back at some point. Yeah Well, I did

think it was kind of neat that the big, hulking,

Romulus guy, which kind of looked like a wolf

in his face anyway, turned into the werewolf

-like figure. It left me saying I really don't

care, honestly. It was another throwaway. Yeah,

Moon of the Wolf and Tiger Tiger are episodes

I will never ever watch again. The sad thing

about Moon of the Wolf is it's written by the

guy who wrote Noble Megatron Noble and Beast

Machines, Len Wein wrote this episode. Oh man,

that enough figures. It has potential though,

I have to admit though both these episodes could

have been a lot better. You think about it? He

wrote... And he wrote four episodes in Batman

the Animated Series. Glenn Wayne. Glenn Wayne,

yes. He did Moon of the Wolf, Off Balance, Blind

as a Bat, The Demon's Quest, which only one of

them I think is good out of those four. And the

only beneficial thing he did is he, you know,

brought in, you know, like Lucius Fox and some

of those other guys, but his... Other, as Mike

said, bringing was he was in Beast Machines and

I hated the Savage Noble. I thought it was cool,

but again, you'll have to go over to Beast Unleashed

to listen to that. It's one of those things where

Len Wein is an amazing writer. I believe he's

written comics before. He's an iconic comic book

writer for DC. I just can't believe they would

give him this episode. Oh my God. The only trivia

bit that even is worth mentioning is when Milo

holds up the newspaper, the photo is captioned

with Bruce Tim's name, which I mean, they throw

that kind of stuff in there all the time. And

I thought that was kind of cool. Frank Walker's

in this, obviously, because of the werewolf effects.

Oh, yeah. And, you know, that's to be expected,

because who better to do animal sounds than Frank?

Yeah, and I can't believe that Romulus was voiced

by Harry Hamlin Harry Hamlin most people will

know him from LA law Well, most people over 30

will know him from LA and he was the voice of

Cameron Kaiser and oh Yeah, that's right in joker's

wild. So, you know, that's To two credits for

DCA you form but yes But overall moon of the

wolf sucks, and I think we're gonna move on and

it was based on a comic Yeah, it's based on what

is it Batman 255 published in 1974? also by Len

Wein I wonder if the comic was better Probably

yeah, it was probably the same They were written

by the same guy Okay, then but it just didn't

look good when it was brought to the screen.

Oh Apparently not we're gonna move on Hey! I

want you to dance with me. Come on, let's dance.

Well done! But not yet. Last up is Day of the

Samurai. In Tokyo, at the Dojo of Yoru -sensei,

his star pupil, a young woman named Karai...yeah

I think it's Karai. It's Kairi. Kairi, whatever,

is practicing late at night. Her practice is

interrupted by a ninja who knocks her unconscious

and carries her away, leaving behind a message

for Yoru. Yoru telephones Bruce Wayne in Gotham

City, saying he needs Bruce's help. After he

and Elford arrive in Japan, Bruce goes to meet

Yoru, wondering innocently how he can be of service.

Yoru says that he hopes Wayne's son can pass

along Yoru's request to Batman, whom he must

know. Compared to the last two episodes. This

is world's better Again, this is keeping in with

what we had in was it night of the ninja? Yeah,

last time yeah night of the ninja yeah So this

is kind of like the sequel to that and I really

enjoyed it Again getting more in -depth and in

Bruce's background for his training overseas

and all that stuff very very awesome episode

I liked it to some extent. I of course like any

chance that I can see Batman doing karate in

various forms. I also like the fact that he gets

his ass kicked usually when it's a ninja thing

kind of showing that he is not totally invincible.

Yes, exactly. Especially when Coyote lunges and

jabs his fingers into a spot on Bruce's chest.

Bruce groans and falls apparently dead. But yeah,

the ancient technique doesn't really work. So

Because the guy thinks it is and you know, Bruce

just kicks his ass Yeah What about you Tara?

You know what? I actually loved this episode.

I loved seeing more of Bruce Wayne's history

When he traveled to Japan and he was doing his

training in the dojo Loved seeing that because

then that really kind of gave you an idea of

actually where he got you know all his moves

for Batman from So it tied in really nicely with

that whole explaining that kind of thing and

just game to see Outside of Gotham traveling

to Where's he go Japan? Yeah, yeah when he goes

to Japan I thought that was just it was just

really cool to see him just go outside of Gotham

City and to see Batman outside of Gotham City.

I thought that was really interesting, and just,

it was just a really good episode. I mean, you

got to see different culture, you got to see

more of Bruce Wayne's history, and you just got

to see him, you know, going back to his roots,

taking on his rival from the dojo, and seeing

how that tied really nicely together, and it

just, it just was really cool. I think anything

involving ninjas and, uh... Crossing between

ninjas and Batman. It's just a really cool mix

and it works really well And it was a very neat

episode and as you guys were saying compared

to the last two episodes is definitely World's

better It definitely is it's up there. It's way

up above the bar in terms of comparing it for

this podcast It just it's really up there. It

was just really well executed and I love watching

it and I would definitely watch this over and

over again and I highly recommend people watching

it if they haven't watched this episode. Definitely

worth to go back to. Oh yeah, most definitely.

And there's some nice points in here too. Between

Bruce and Alfred, after they walk away, Alfred

asks him how he survived the death touch. Bruce

pulls a small armor plate from under his tunic

and explains that he examined the practice dummy

and coyotes hideout and found his soft spot that

he had jabbed with his fingers many times And

the other thing I find interesting is you know

that Bruce kind of beats himself up about you

know Batman being as much a ninja as coyote and

then you're responds that Batman showed mercy

and resisted the Temptation to use the knowledge

of the death touch and so he is a true samurai.

That's true and then of course That Kari Ari

Is later seen in Batman Beyond? Yeah in the episode

curse of the Cobra Yep, which I'm gonna have

to learn how to say that name again later. It's

Kyrie. I think I'm pretty sure it's Kyrie Okay,

but but yeah, it was it was cool to see That

um Nod into the future later on that I didn't

know existed having watched Batman Beyond Yeah,

yeah overall day of the samurai as we've said

it is a nice informational episode as far as

Bruce's past and his training and seeing that

here in the series. I mean, you don't just become

the goddamn Batman overnight. It takes years

and years and billions of dollars. Yes, lots

and lots of money. And lots and lots of training.

And it helps if you have a samurai background.

Well, Mockridge owns the Minotaur, but what's

as high as an elephant's eye? Corn. Before your

time. So what's he saying? When Mockridge is

corny? When Mockridge is in the corn? What's

another word meaning corn? Colonel, a cop? Maze.

When Mockridge is in the maze. The maze at the

amusement park. Exactly. I linked it to my palm

-top computer. That is grand -scale cheating,

Batman! You're not allowed to tamper with the

hand of fate. I don't believe in fate. You probably

don't believe in Minotaurs either, but you'll

still have to answer the riddle. I have billions

of eyes, yet I live in darkness. I have millions

of ears, yet only four looms. I have no muscle,

yet I rule two hemispheres. What am I? That simple,

the human brain. It has billions of optic and

auditory nerves, four lobes and two hemispheres,

and it's the only thing Edward Nigma respects.

A lucky guess, that's all. But it won't save

you, Batman. Destroy them! He's ripping me off!

A protest! Yeah! I'll sue! Then I'll rip his

lungs out! And I will, too! Once I spin the wheel

you the casino and that strutting fool Kaiser

will all be blown sky -high Not bad, eh? You

won't get Kaiser. He's been playing you for a

patsy He's counting on you to blow this place

up so we can collect the insurance By the time

you get clear, Kaiser will be miles away laughing

at you. I hate it when you make sense! I'll settle

my score with Kaiser, man -to -clown, but that

still doesn't let you off the hook! And we're

back! So, what are you guys' final thoughts on

the episodes today? As if I don't already know.

For me, I loved the first two. Joker's Wild and

If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich? And

I like Day of the Samurai. Tiger, Tiger and Moon

of the Wolf just need to go die in a fire. But

the way that I would rank them is I would go

If You're So Smart, Joker's Wild and then Day

of the Samurai. And then the other two are about

even keel with each other for me. Tara for me.

I'm gonna have to say number one is Joker's wild

number two goes to if you're so smart Why aren't

you rich followed by data samurai? And then as

you said tiger tiger moon of the wolf are my

bottom two because they just suck But yeah, I

like the those three episodes really saved this

episode of the podcast for me because Made it

actual actually enjoyable to go and watch that

go and watch these three compared to you know

suffering through two of them Yeah, overall yeah

those three really save this so good job I Have

to say that if you're so smart, why aren't you

rich would be my number one jokers wild number

two Then, following that, number three would

be Day of the Samurai. Then, in the Department

of the Garbage Disposal would be Tiger Tiger

and Moon of the Wolf because they don't deserve

a number. I'm sure I'm going to get hate mail

for that, so if you want to send it to Steve

at GeekCastRadar .com, I'll read it on the next

episode. I'm perfectly fine with that, but I

know that none of us cared for those two. Yeah,

I mean if people want to send in hate mail, that's

fine, but the thing is Moon of the Wolf and Tiger

Tiger are essentially really, really bad phonemes.

It's kind of like you're in a tunnel and the

other person is not hearing what you're saying

to convey the episode done. I mean, they're just

bad episodes and I think people watch the episodes

You know even before they listen to the show

or even even even if they go back after they

hear our reviews of it And they watch them and

they find out how bad moon of the wolf and tiger

tiger are Yeah, I have to agree and I mean these

are just our opinions So we're not trying to

put our opinions on anybody out there. We're

just sharing We're just sharing you know what

we think and I mean people are of course you're

free to disagree with us But it's just what we

think we didn't like those two episodes Yeah,

and as far as that's all concerned next time

we have a Bunch of great ones. Yeah to make up

for those two lousy ones. Yes exactly so fear

not Batman fans there will be good episodes in

the next episode or covered in the next episode

so With that any other thoughts Nope. Nope. Alrighty
