About this Episode

The team discusses four episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. They explore the debut of the Clock King, the emotional weight of Bruce Wayne's history in 'Appointment in Crime Alley,' the origins of the Mad Hatter, and the psychological intensity of the Scarecrow's fear toxin in 'Dreams in Darkness.' The discussion covers voice acting trivia, production inconsistencies, and the influence these episodes had on later films and video games.

This is Batgirl, and this episode of Legends

of the Dark Knight features Stephen C. Phillips

and Mike Blanchard. Oh, and welcome to Legends

of the Dark Knight. I'm your host, Steve Megatron

Phillips, joining me in this bat -tastic episode

as the dynamic duo TFG1 Mike. Hello. And Terra.

Hey. Welcome back. Thanks, good to be back. Another

fantastic Legends of the Dark Knight episode

talking about my favorite show, Batman. Yes.

And I think that before we get into our little

tidbit of What's up? I think we should tackle

the iTunes review. Yes. Sounds good. And it says,

good job. That's four out of five stars. Thank

you. And it's by D Dark Knight with multiple

T's at the end. On January 24th this year, he

says, one of my favorite TV shows ever. Just

a couple of suggestions. One, cut out the, what

have you been doing lately? First few minutes.

Doesn't add anything for the listener. Well.

I'll let Mike explain that. Ever since we have

been doing shows here on the GeekCast Radio Network,

we have always done the little catch -up intro

thing. Steve and I talk all the time. Steve,

myself and Kevin talk all the time, but it's

not often. Tara, we may talk to once a month

or so or once every few weeks on an actual podcast.

You know, for the hosts that are just coming

in or for the hosts that are not as on as often

as Steve, myself, or Kevin are, we will always

do what have you been doing or what's going on

with those people because it's only fair. And

it's only, our intros are normally only maximum

six minutes. I mean, sometimes they go 15 minutes.

It just depends. I mean, we try to keep it short

and sweet, but no, that segment's never going

away, dude. Sorry. Or do that, whatever. Number

two is lots of pauses when talking, not sure

if this is editing or what. Sometimes it can

be editing, I try and get as much as I can. The

last episode I was kind of rushed being that

I just reformatted my computer and was having

issues grabbing audio from the DVDs. So I was

trying to get it out as soon as possible without

prolonging the editing any further. the third

thing it says more Tara love her personality

good to know yes and then keep up the good work

guys really enjoy this podcast so thank you again

for that awesome review yes thank you I appreciate

it keep listening yes so what have you guys been

up to What have I been up to? I basically have

been working in the last four weeks and just

taking it easy because I was not doing so well

last week, but I'm doing a lot better now and

Just getting back into the swing of things and

loving my placement It's going really well and

loving being back on the podcast because I believe

it's been what a month since I've been back on

this podcast something like that i can't i can't

exactly remember but i know it's been a couple

weeks or something so it's good to be back because

i love chatting about the series and it's my

it's one of my favorite superheroes so you know

it's it's great to be able to share my bat -tastic

knowledge with the world out there Usually legends

records every two weeks that's because it takes

us a while I mean we we cover anywhere from three

to six episodes per podcast so you know watching

all of those episodes and taking notes or anything

else takes time so yeah every two weeks is normally

when we record the show yeah we can't exactly

discuss 20 episodes in one podcast I mean It

would be a 20 hour podcast. No one wants that.

Yes, exactly. Unless we plan on turning this

into like, you know, a 24 hour Batman channel,

you know? Batman all the time. Which I don't

think... No, not gonna happen. I have been...

Getting more ads recorded for GCR and I just

recorded ads for mask mayhem, which is our mask

podcast coming up Reviewing all 75 episodes of

that show. I Finally rerecorded a tune cast beyond

ads. So there's that Recorded the This week in

geek topic show and the five -year anniversary

show for them What else we got? Tons of tune

cast beyond stuff happening I'm gonna have to

start pre recording those cuz at one point tune

cast beyond will almost be going daily later

this year Yeah, I know bring on the tune cast

yes, that's right. So what have you been up to

Steve? Um besides mimicking Pat Fraley. Yeah

Yes, if you want to hear that go to Toy cast

87 yes and listen to the intro and you'll hear

it there. I'm not doing it right now because

I don't feel like it So, um, so yeah, that's

that's part of it. Um Been working on various

voiceover stuff pertaining to Transformers Beast

Wars and then of course I've been doing a Star

Trek podcast over at This Week in Geek. I've

been doing some image editing for them, as well

as website work, as well as our own. Yes. And

enjoying the Ferris Bueller knockoff commercial

for Honda. We want Ferris Bueller back. That

would be awesome. Yeah, I think I speak for.

the entire population of YouTube who's been commenting

and watching that video like crazy today. We

want a sequel. But it's not going to happen,

it seems. Probably not. It would be nice. It

would be nice, but it's doubtful. I mean, like

we were discussing before we actually started

recording, because John Hughes sadly is no longer

with us. You know, it'd be hard for, I guess,

them to actually kind of emulate what John Hughes

had originally done with the first movie. So

a sequel would probably not be the same level

as what we saw in the 80s. So it's a tough, it's

a tough thing. I mean, but the director of The

Hangover did a really good job with the Honda

commercial, as you said, Steve. So who knows?

Maybe this could be a thing of signs, a sign

of things to come. Yes. So with that, we will

move on to the first episode of the day. It's

about time. Good morning, Hill. Oh, good morning.

Fugit. Temple Fugit. I should think you'd remember

the name by now, counselor. We've only been taking

the same train every day for one year, seven

months, and 13 days. Oh, right. The efficiency

expert. Six minutes behind schedule. You seem

pretty tightly wound this morning, Fugit. I have

an important court hearing today. There's been

a $20 million judgment against my company. My

attorney has appealed, but if we lose, it's the

end of everything. Temple, let me give you some

advice. I'm a lawyer. Trust me, I know these

things. If that judge sees you looking as tense

and haggard as you are now, he'll think you were

up to something. Loosen up. Do something to relax

before you go into court. Get out of your routine

for a few minutes. Do you take a coffee break?

Of course, every day, at 3 on the dot. Then take

it at 3 .15. But my schedule... Forget your schedule

for one day. Believe me, it'll make a new man

out of you. First up today is The Clock King.

On a Gotham City subway, attorney -at -law Hamilton

Hill sits next to Temple Fugit, a businessman

typing intently on a laptop computer. Hill advises

him to loosen up and Fugit stiffly informs him

that he is preparing to appear in court to appeal

a multi -million dollar verdict against his company.

He'll ask if Fuget at least takes a coffee break,

when Fuget says that he does at 3 o 'clock on

the dot. He'll suggest that he shake up his routine

a bit and take it at 3 .15, the better to appear

more relaxed in court. If only he knew what he

was getting into. This guy is hilariously awesome.

Oh yeah. I agree with that wholeheartedly. Yep.

This guy is awesome. And I just love the fact

that, you know, he's coming back for revenge

on Hill for giving him that advice. Oh yeah,

that is funny. I don't even... That would just

be annoying as hell if um... You get that fire

and then you're just like Just throws off your

whole day just by changing 15 minutes You know,

oh man the clock hang he's such an interesting

character Yeah, I like his glasses with the little

mini clocks on it Time is against you Batman.

Yep It was a very interesting episode that's

for sure and also just just to see a sort of

time incorporated Batman episode. Very interesting.

Yeah, very awesome. I have to say that this is

one of my favorite kind of alternate villains,

just not of the mainstream like Poison Ivy, Bane,

Joker, Riddler. You know, I'd have to say this

is one of my favorite of just the normal just

guy that just wigs out and doesn't know what

to do and takes his timing literally. Yeah Yeah

this I mean He's pretty iconic. I mean because

one is glasses as you mentioned Tara, you know

with the hands on them and the lighting on them

Yeah, and then like his you know perfect stature

Matter -of -factness about everything and then

he pulls out the pocket watch like it is time

for you to die or you know Just really stupid

catchphrases, but it's it's hilarious. He reminds

me of penguin almost a little bit The way he

carries himself. Yeah that is a canish thing.

Yes, Kane Just the way he acts he doesn't act

like a normal criminal, you know with the other

like I'm Good contrast is croc Crocs just like

I'm gonna kill you Batman. I'm gonna rip you

from limb to limb and you know, like you said

was clock the clock king with his witty kind

of phrases all having to do with like You're

out of time Batman or something, you know like

that It was pretty it was pretty funny. I like

him. He's interesting. He's almost like the Riddler

Yeah, different color set up and instead of riddles

he tells time Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

Actually when I first saw him, I immediately

thought of the Riddler I wonder if that was done

on purpose. I'm not sure but I just realized,

and I didn't know this, because when you hear

the Clock King's voice, you don't think of what

I'm going to say. Have you guys ever seen Dharma

and Greg? Yep. Alan Rations. He's the voice?

The Clock King. No way. Larry friggin' Finkelstein

is the Clock King. No way. Oh my God. You know

what the sad thing is? What? He's only had three

DCAU episodes. Yep. This one, Time Out of Joint

and Task Force X in Justice League. Unlimited.

Yes. Well, it's essentially the same show. Yes.

The Clot King isn't getting much love. No, sadly

not. But they have so many other villains to

tackle. Yes. But yeah, some minor trivia. The

Clot King is an original villain of the DC Comics.

Though his character is much different from the

animated version, both characters are efficiency

experts who make uncanny use of timing. But the

original Clot King was named William Tachman,

and his crimes were motivated by the need to

provide for his sister when he mistakenly believed

he was dying of an illness. That is different.

Yeah, very different. This Clot King's name,

Temple Fugit, is a play on the Latin expression

tempus fugit, meaning time flies. Interesting.

It's funny when people want to use their knowledge

against people and just hide meanings in places

that nobody would actually think to look. Yes.

But yeah, I'd have to say that overall I like

this episode. This one was really, really great.

And also one of the other trivia bits that is

very interesting to me is because It doesn't

really fit in during the day, but this episode

breaks the status quo by having Batman making

all of his appearances during the day. Or by

day, because there's no, I mean there's like

maybe one sunset scene in this at the end when

they're fighting, but all the rest of it is during

the day. It's not, you know, it's not at night

on a rooftop waiting for criminals. I remember

that. Yeah, it's very awesome. It's interesting.

Did you never usually see Batman during the day?

No. Well, he sticks out like a sore thumb. Look,

it's Batman! Shoot him down! He'd be an easy

target for Joker during the day, that's for sure.

Well, he's an easy target for Joker at any time.

Yeah, that's true. I do like these two lines

though, where Batman, one of them says, I'm here

to claim your clock, fugit. Don't count on it

Batman when it comes to clocks. I am King unguarded

Yeah, that's the other reason why clocking is

so awesome. He has a sword cane. So yes, I'm

like I'm gonna raise an umbrella Yeah, the sword

cane. It's like isn't it like one of the Hands

of a clock basically, it's in the shape of a

hand one of the yeah our hand or the minute hand

Yeah, yeah, I thought that was pretty interesting

Yeah, sad thing is I didn't catch that before

so good job No problem. I just thought it was

just a weird looking cane. No, it's a sword cane.

No, yeah, and it's in the shape of the hour and

the minute hand. And then the other one where

he says, give it up, fugit. He'll committed no

crime against you. He did worse. He made me late.

Yes, because being late is a crime. Yes. At least

according to the clock, it's a crime. Yes. With

madness. Anyways, any other? thoughts on this

episode? It's really interesting. Yeah, it is.

I think that's it for this one, though. Mm -hmm.

Well, it was written by a good writer, David

Wise. Yeah, very awesome. Yeah, so this is a

good episode. But anyways, we'll be moving on.

You do good work, mister. What did you say your

name was? Nitro, Mr. Daggett, on account of explosives

on my business. I assume Crocker explained the

terms of your employment, Mr. Nitro? Sure. There's

an old gas line running under the whole block.

I make it look like the pipeline ruptured, so

the job can't be traced to you. It's to be done

while I give my speech to the Gotham Better Business

Council. Nine o 'clock exactly. Trust me, when

the hands on that watch hit nine, boom. Next

up is Appointment in Crime Alley. Roland Daggett

attempts to demolish Crime Alley, but he first

has to deal with Leslie Tompkins and her friend,

Batman. Yeah, this one gives you a lot of insight

to Bruce. I mean, it's more so Bruce dealing

with his emotions about his parents' death than

an actual Batman. I mean, yeah, sure, it's got

the traditional gangster wants to blow up a section

of town so he can develop it for himself. But

I mean, the real heart of this episode is having

to deal with Leslie Tompkins and just dealing

with the memory of the Waynes. Yeah, and I wouldn't

say this is one of my favorite episodes But I

can definitely see that it adds to the nice backstory

of Bruce Wayne and Batman mm -hmm To me this

was a very interesting episode, and I mean just

thought to reiterate what you guys have been

saying but I liked it just because you learned

so much more about versus history and Really

what made him you know become Batman and also

about Leslie Tompkins who I don't I'm not Correct

me if I'm wrong, I don't know if this is the

first time we're seeing her in the series. I

believe it might be one of the first times. I

think it is, yeah. And just to see the relationship

between Batman and Leslie Tompkins and then seeing

it between Bruce, I'm not sure if Bruce actually

goes to visit Leslie Tompkins in Crime Alley.

But just to see that kind of bond between them

and just see how much that place means to Batman.

I mean, the first time you're really seeing Batman

showing some raw emotion about dealing with the

death of his parents, and it hits you. And I

mean, if you compare that scene to Batman Begins

when he's in crime alley, when you see his parents

first getting murdered, it's almost the exact

same thing. Except they weren't coming out of

an opera, I don't think. You don't even see them

come out of the opera in the cartoon, you just

see them walking in the alley and they get shot.

So yeah, it's a good episode and definitely worth

watching if you haven't watched it. And that's

all I have to say. Steve? I'd definitely say

that I like how this whole thing plays out as

far as the episode. It's nice to see that Daggett's

still a douchebag. Not to put it bluntly, but

I did. He's a douchebag. You see Batman actually

sacrifice the Batmobile. Yeah. Or at least part

of it. Well, the funny thing about that is that

scene or during a scene in the episode... You

have a nod to the Tim Burton film where he actually

put shields on the fat mobile. I thought that

was awesome Yeah It's very awesome But yeah the

the episode overall it does it does help you

understand more of how caring Not only you know

Leslie Tompkins is but as as Bruce is so I mean

it definitely helps cement that he truly is this

great Ideal in person so Yeah, oh wow Jeffrey

Tambor was crocker in this awesome I have no

idea who that is He's done a bunch of stuff.

I'm sure if you had if you've seen him you you

would know He was Daggett's one of Daggett's

Crew members on In the episode He's also done

stuff like He was in mash mr. Mom city slickers

Life stinks, so he's been in a bunch of stuff

Things I don't remember very well Yeah, cuz you

weren't born yet To you Some basic trivia. Yeah,

this story is directly based on the comic story.

There is no hope in crime alley detective comics

number 457 in March 1976 Yep in the scene showing

the mailboxes for Leslie's buildings Residents

are shown to be Haven exam Alexander Nicole Pull

it misspelled pulley it It says I don't know

it's a little differently Bruce Timm and Eric

Radomski are also listed. A scene in which, as

you said before, the Batman sets the shields

on the Batmobiles nod to the Tim Burton film,

which is definitely cool. That's about the only

good part of Returns. Just saying. You know,

the other trivia. When Bruce says Roland Daggett's

up to something, Alfred replies, that almost

goes without saying, doesn't it, sir? When Lucius

Fox asks Bruce if he thinks Daggett's up to something

and can't scratch fever, Bruce replies, that

goes without saying, doesn't it? Yeah. I like

how they play a lot of irony in this show. Oh,

yes, they do. But anyways, anything else on this

one? I think that's it. That's it for me. I think

we'll be moving on. That's table manners. Perhaps

I can make you act a bit more civilized. They

all laughed when I said I'd find a way to tap

into another creature's mind. Why, with this

band and these electrodes, I can control anything.

Jervis! Oh, Alice. What a nice surprise. Yeah,

yeah. Look busy. Dr. Cates, Mr. Wayne. Right

this way. Bruce, you remember Jervis Tetch? Hello.

Of course. I read your proposal on using microchips

to enhance the brain's potential. Sounds intriguing.

Actually, the prototype isn't quite ready yet.

Tetch? I think we owe our founder and employer,

Mr. Wayne, a little more than lame excuses. Sorry.

That's all right, Dr. Cates. Mr. Tetch is a valued

member of our research team. I'm sure we can

spare him more time. As you say, Bruce. Thank

you. You got off easy this time, Tetch, but heads

could roll if you slip up again. Up next is Mad

as a Hatter. A small group of lab rats is given

a miniature tea set and react to it much as any

normal rat would. However, Jervis Tetch, an expert

of neural technology at Wayne Enterprises, activates

a mind control device and the rats suddenly sit

around the table and accept tea poured into their

cups. So in this episode, it's the first time

we see the criminal mastermind the mad hatter

and see his origin I thought this is a really

interesting episode because it has the whole

Alice in Wonderland theme to it, which is pretty

it's it's pretty interesting when you see when

you see a Sort of story tale stories come to

life in your favorite cartoons and with your

favorite superheroes And the Mad Hatter has to

be one of my favorite villains. It's sad. You

don't see him too much throughout the season.

Well, not the season, but throughout the series.

He's in a couple episodes. But in this one, he

really shines and I really love this episode.

What did you think, Steve? Well, I definitely

did like this episode. The Mad Hatter has always

been kind of a creepy yet weird character for

me. not only for the fact that he's in Alice

in Wonderland, but just every... the thought

of him mind -controlling people is just kind

of weird. I like how they start him off as just,

you know, this normal guy just kind of playing

around with the mind control thing, even though

Bruce wants them to do the increase for brain

potential. And I can kind of see why he goes

off the deep end, because... Like many of the

DCU villains they get belittled by somebody that's

their boss at Wayne Enterprises Yeah, and go

off the deep end using the same technology they

created at Wayne Enterprises. So It's funny seeing

this how this whole plays out, you know, he's

the jealous guy he's the guy getting you know

pissed on by his boss and and the girl he likes

won't go with him. Yeah, cuz she's already got

a fiance and Yeah, so I mean, it was very interesting.

His creepy smile does not do him any health.

Oh, no way! No way! That, oh man. And his infatuation

with the Alice in Wonderland book. Yup. That's

just major pedo right there. Yeah, it is. That's

true. Oh, Jervis Tetch. But he's cool. Yeah,

he is cool. Whenever there's mind control going

on in Batman, you can be sure that Mad Hatter

is behind it. Yep. He's actually shown up a lot.

Mad as a Hatter was his debut. Probably one of

the best ones in BTIS is Perchance to Dream.

That was an awesome, awesome episode. Almost

got him, he was mentioned. Joker's Wild, he had

a cameo. The Worry Men, he was in that. Trial,

he was in that. Uh, in Harlequinade and Make

Em Laugh, he was mentioned and had a cameo. Over

in The New Adventures, he was in Over the Edge

and Animal Act, and in Superman the Animated

Series, he was in the episode entitled Night

Time, where, uh, that was the episode where Brainiac

basically took over Bruce Wayne's body and Superman

has to come in and pretend to be Batman, so that

was very awesome. I'm not fond of him when he

gets his new look later on, but... His Mad Hatter

look? Are you mean the updated look? The updated

look. The revamp look, yeah. I hate when they

revamp them all. He looks like, how do I describe

him? Did he get shorter or is it just me? Probably.

He looks really short in the revamp compared

to how he used to look. I mean, the other villains

revamps weren't that bad, but Mad Hatter's is

kind of awkward. Well, he got older too, so.

Yeah, but he shouldn't have that much. He's like

really small. He became a dwarf. He became a

dwarf. Aw, poor Mad Hatter. Can't catch a break.

Nope. You can't catch a bat or an Alice for that

matter either. Nope. Bad, dude. That's just bad.

It was very funny, actually. Roddy McDowell who

voices Jervis also was the bookworm in the 1966

66 Batman. Let's see here Let's see Roddy McDowell

played bookworm in the 1960s Batman TV series

So it was kind of nice seeing him voice Mad Hatter.

He's done a bunch of other stuff as well He's

done a lot. I mean this guy wow Has he passed

away? Yeah, he passed away in 1998. Yeah, okay

I was gonna say because he had been working since

1938. He died of lung cancer. Oh, that's kind

of sad actually But no this episode is just awesome.

The the character of the Mad Hatter is is one

of the better Rick I would call him a Tier two

character like tier one is obviously poison ivy

joker penguin two -face Catwoman to a lesser

extent tier two is mad hatter clock king. Yeah

People that are more normal that just kind of

went nuts Here's I'm gonna ask anyone else notice

this or maybe having a feeling on this the voice

actor or just Alice's character in general her

voice annoyed the hell out of me Yeah, that was

just meh. Especially when she's like, Jervis!

Jervis! Well, if you look at her picture, she's

got kind of that look of that annoying voice

type. That's true, yeah. She was in The Critic,

The Tick, The Simpsons, so go figure. Just to

have that annoying voice. I mean, no disrespect

to the voice actor, because she did a really

good job. It's just that voice, just with Alice,

it's just made the hairs on the back of my neck

stand up. I don't know why, but just something

about it. Yup. Yeah, that's like booster gold

in DC Universe online. Or Justice League. Fuck

booster gold. You guys have anything else to

add or should we move on? Yeah, I think we should

move on. I think we're done with this episode

and on to the next episode. Has the new patient

quieted down? Yes, doctor his hallucinations

seem to have stopped Such a pity really to think

after all he's accomplished that he should end

up here like this Yes, it does seem comma You

can turn on the lights It's all right, man, I'm

dr. Betholomew your psychiatrist did you contact

Commissioner Gordon and dr. Wu? Now calm yourself.

Everything is under control. Haven't you listened

to anything I've told you? He needs more time.

See that he's not disturbed. Bartholomew! We

don't have any more time! Now, now. There's always

time to heal. Such a pity. There's always time

to heal, the doctor told me. But he was wrong.

There was no time left not for me not for him

and not for Gotham City not Next up is dreams

in darkness It marks the final time that scarecrow

is the main villain of an episode of Batman the

animated series In Arkham's asylum cell, Batman

is strapped with a straight jacket. From there

to the resident staff, he's now the latest addition

to the Arkham line of maniacs. And nobody will

listen to a word he says due to his apparent

insanity. With no other choice, Batman starts

recounting the tale of how he ended up in such

a situation. Yeah, this one was weird. This was

the weirdest episode. And it's written by...

Judith and Garfield read Stevens which write

a lot of like sci -fi type books or just you

know books in general that have to do with this

kind of thing so it's not surprising that it's

kind of weird yeah but I mean like okay you take

an episode like um okay I'm gonna compare Scarecrow

episodes here. You take an episode like this,

Dreams in Darkness, and then you take an episode

like Over the Edge. Because they're both Scarecrow

episodes, they're both, you know, quote -unquote

dream sequences or whatever else. And... I...

Just simply because of what kind of continuity

it gives to the Bat Family, I prefer Over the

Edge, but this one was just so freaking weird.

I... This is not an episode I can watch ever

again It's it's alright However, there are some

weird instances as far as this They when they

admit him to Arkham and he's wanting Commissioner

Gordon and dr. Wu They decide to leave his cowl

on yeah believing it could shatter the remains

of his sanity when you know That doesn't have

anything to do with the rest of them. They take

their masks off. They don't care about that.

So why not make it special treatment? Yeah. So

that's a little strange. And there's also another

fact in here. And tell me if you hear this plot

line reused elsewhere. And it has to do with.

the Gotham, the giant pump machine filled under

the cave network below Arkham which supplies

Gotham with water and filling it with a fear

toxin and he plans on releasing massive amounts

into the town supply transforming Gotham into

a fear -filled inferno. So basically Christopher

Nolan ripped off BTIS. Yes, that's exactly. looks

like it well I mean that scene where Batman is

in Arkham oh my god it was complete it was screwing

with your head I swear to God this episode screws

with your head I mean it's the same thing as

in um Arkham Asylum In one of the scare I mean,

hopefully everyone who's listening to this podcast

has already played it or already knows how it

ends So it's probably a spoiler and shows like

almost 20 years old I mean, I mean the game.

Oh, yeah, I wasn't talking about the game. I

was talking about Batman begins. Yeah, no, no,

I'm not talking about Batman begins. I'm talking

about Arkham Asylum Cuz there's a scene where

they make him locked up in the asylum and yeah,

he's being you're basically replaying the first

the first the opening scene as You're controlling

Joker and Joker is leading Batman is the asylum

It's like they've switched places instead of

all the cops and you know all the normal people

like, you know in charge of the asylum It's all

the villains And stuff so you've got Batman tied

up on that gurney thing being led into the asylum

by I think croc and then you've scarecrow coming

to examine him It's it's almost the exact same

thing in BTS. So I'm wondering if that's where

they got the inspiration for that scarecrow Nightmare

scene where Batman's you know where you're controlling

Joker and all and the inmates are running the

asylum It's it's like that Almost that's what

I think when I look back on that episode and

compare it to the game Just this this episode

you really got it. You really have to pay attention

because otherwise you would be like what is going

on? Because yeah, but it was very well done.

I mean it definitely it definitely was I mean

it got you got you hooked to your television

So you wanted to know what was going on, but

it messed with your head. So good job Exactly.

What about you Steve? um I pretty much already

went. But there is a production inconsistency,

and I agree with this. It's strange Batman can't

free himself from a straitjacket as he was able

to do so chained upside down in a water torture

tank and be a clown. It just makes no sense how

he can't rip himself out of a straitjacket without

chains on it. Yeah, that's true. Well, he is

no David Copperfield. He's the goddamn Batman.

Why can't he do it? But he did it upside down

with chains on him in a water tank Yeah, how

is he not going to get a simple straight jacket

off? Maybe gone insane Well, yeah that but maybe

because in that in in be a clown the water tank

gave his body more more buoyancy So maybe that

I don't know. I really can't explain it away,

but you know, there are a lot of those little

inconsistencies with Batman in all different

forms of cartoons, not just the DCAU. I mean,

certain things he can do. There are certain times

where he should be fucking dead. Just like the

Joker. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, they won't even let

you do that in the video game I've tried. Whenever

I say to people like when I'm playing one of

the Batman video games I'm like, yeah, I just

killed you know, I just killed poison ivy. I

just killed Bane They're like no you didn't kill

Batman doesn't kill and I'm like, okay, I incapacitated

somebody how does that sound? Cuz that's what

he does. Yeah, you can't say you can't say you

can't say kill and Batman in the same sentence.

You just can't Well, if you try and hit something

with a batarang after you've yanked a guy off

a ledge and he's hanging from a rope, it will

clearly tell you Batman does not do things like

that. In a little dialogue box, because I tried.

Which one? Asylum or City? City. I have to try

that. I've tried it. If you do a ledge takedown

with, you know, yeah, it's funny. Anyways, getting

into the trivia of this, Batman's Large Hallucination

features appearances from The Joker, Penguin,

Two -Face, Poison Ivy, Robin, Alfred, and finally

Scarecrow. As I've mentioned before, the plot

by the Scarecrow in this episode, to poison Gotham

City's water supply, was the main plot in Batman

Begins. The only major difference is Raish Elgul

is the true mastermind. Part of the scene where

Batman sees hallucinations of the Joker resembles

a scene from the scrapped Joel Schumacher film

Batman Triumphant. Made the the Batman forever

and Batman and Robin. Oh Yeah, those those those

those films have the seats. Yes I even called

them films. Yes Well, it's the first Joker's

first laugh in this episode sounds like Mark

Hamill's portrayal the second and third sound

far too high -pitched either Hamill's voice is

edited or another voice actor stepped in possibly

option number three probably Maybe he was sick

or something, so he had somebody fill in. Who

filled in? Do we know? No, it doesn't say. I

don't know. And again, I'm not downing this voice

actor because he is awesome and we interviewed

him twice, but I seriously doubt Rob Paulson

has that mimicking available in his repertoire

for Joker. What about the other voice actors

who've done that? That could be. As far as Batman

Triumph, and I did find it on Wikipedia, it's

listed under Batman and Other Media. Let's see,

where is it? During the filming of Batman and

Robin, Warner Bros. was impressed with the dailies.

This prompted them to immediately hire Joel Schumacher

to return as director for a sequel with writer

Alexei... Akiva Goldsman. Yeah, worked with Batman

Forever and Batman and Robin, with Schumacher

turned down the chance to write a script. In

96, Warner Brothers and Schumacher hired Mark

Prostovich to write the script for a fifth Batman

film. Projected in 1999, release date was announced.

Titled Batman Triumphant, Prostovich's script

had the scarecrow as the main villain. The Joker

would return as a hallucination. Oh, yeah. God!

Well, that would have been a bad film. Oh, yeah.

And it says Harley Quinn would appear as a supporting

character written as the Joker's daughter trying

to get revenge on Batman for Joker's death. What?

Oh, no way! No! George Clooney was gonna reprise

his role on this. No. And because of the negative

reviews of Batman and Robin, they bombed this

idea. They're just like, hey, we're not gonna

go and make another bad film. It gets worse.

The studio decided it was best to consider a

live -action Batman Beyond film and an adaptation

of Frank Miller's Batman Year One. Warner Bros.

would then Greenlight whichever idea suited them

the most and yeah, so... They were going to do

the year one and then that kind of just fell

in the crapper. I don't think it from now from

now having the DC Universe animated movie of

Batman year one. I don't know if a live action

version would be even viable of what your year

one. No, because Batman Begins pretty much did

it. Yeah. Yeah. But I mean, I'm saying like if

you. You've seen year one, right? The new movie?

No. I haven't. Batman year one is basically him

going up against corruption in Gotham. In the

animated movie, it's more so a Commissioner Gordon

story than anything else. I mean, Batman is seen

maybe five times in the entire film. And I'm

not disrespecting or talking down to Frank Miller's

work of the original comic, but I just don't

think, not with what we have with Nolan now,

I don't think year one should even be considered

for a live action movie nowadays. No, but getting

back to the episode off that wild tangent there.

Yes, another thing is a hallucination by Batman

resembles the mask When Batman is being it is

shown being wheeled on a stretcher He raves Robin

look out Joker's got a bomb in reference to Jason

Todd the second Robin in the comic series Who

was killed by a bomb set by the Joker? Which

tells me clearly that these people have no idea

What Robin is actually in the series? well It

is specifically stated that it is that Lauren

Lester's voice of Robin is Dick Grayson. Later

on, what they did with Tim Drake, they combined

aspects of both Tim Drake and Jason Todd's stories,

but they named him Tim Drake because they wanted

to have that kid Robin again. Yes, Dick Grayson

has grown up throughout this series. By the time

the new adventures happened they wanted to have

you know Batman and his You know kids sidekick.

It's a little protege. Yeah In one scene dr.

Bartholomew refers to the Joker's Jack Napier

which hints at the portrayal in the Tim Burton

1989 Batman film But we know it's an alias. It's

not his real name, right? He doesn't have a real

name. Yeah, but that's his most common name Is

Jacques Gavier, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yes, and that

character, that Dr. Bartholomew, Bartholomew

is also a Frank Miller Batman Dark Knight returns

doctor who treats the Joker in Two -Face. Uh,

Scarecrow does indeed have a new mask in this

episode, though it is not much different from

the previous one. The new mask does have some

differences from the previous mask. It has a

slightly different stitch job, the hair is also

combed and much neater than before, the eye slits

are smaller and the eyes therefore take up more

room, and the teeth are slightly smaller. This

mask is also tighter than before and has a smaller

jaw and is less likely, or less awkwardly large

than before. And his tone is once again altered.

I personally like this version of the Scarecrow

the best. Yeah, I would have to agree. Me too.

This has the best combination of voice and costume,

so I would definitely say this is the ultimate

DCAU style here. Yeah, this is probably the best

one. So anything else on this one? I think that's

it. And we'll be moving on. You've done enough

damage with your money. You wicked evil! Evil,

Mrs. Thomas? I don't control a company that leveled

a thousand -year -old forest for a strip mine.

That's evil! You and your kind, oh mother nature,

are big debt. And I'm going to see that you pay

it. Coming up is Eternal Youth. Eternal Youth,

in the dead of - No, hold on, stop. What did

I just do? Finally today is - Finally today is

- Yeah, because this is the last episode, so

- Yeah, sorry. Can I do that again? Restart.

Yep. Ready. Go ahead. Finally up today is Eternal

Youth. In the dead of the night, a woman runs,

panting with fear, through remote forest, being

pursued by a mysterious figure in a jumpsuit.

When the woman stops out of breath, the figure

catches up. The woman, Mrs. Thompson, begs for

her life. having seen what has happened to the

others but the figure sprays mrs thomas with

some kind of chemical there is a creaking sound

and mrs thomas becomes completely petrified so

we've got another episode which i can hazard

a guess has poison ivy in it oh yeah because

we've got people turning into trees yes who does

that poison ivy talk about branching out no pun

intended there Got plenty of it plenty of pun

intended I Really I you know what? This episode

was pretty good compared to the first time we

see her in Pretty poison yeah, it looks like

she got a little bit more writing done in terms

of her character because she's a little bit more

of a badass here Eternal youth going after going

after people and the funny aspect I found about

this episode is she tries to hook Bruce Wayne

into coming to the eternal youth spa But actually

it's Alfred and I forget the woman his lady Maggie

Yeah, he caught who I guess she's kind of his

love interest. I guess you can say that she goes

with them And Alfred just goes completely into

relax mode. And when he comes back from the eternal

youth spa, Bruce comes like Batman comes into

the bat cave and he's like, why the hell are

all these trees in here? Like, and what are you

drinking? And then all of a sudden, Alfred just

collapses. And then all of a sudden, he Maggie

comes back and she's just like, OK, I want to

go back to the spa. Let's go back. You know,

no suspicions or anything. Just let's go back

to the spa. Well, it's you know, they've been

hypnotized and they've been drugged and this

that the other thing and everything else But

what I absolutely love about this is this gives

Alfred So much more character than its point.

That's because he is out of his element And it's

just so awesome Yeah, he's really out of his

element. He doesn't know he has no clue what's

going on. It's kind of funny just to see just

to see his character in this episode and also

to see poison ivy posing as doctor demeter yeah

i mean her disguise isn't even that good i know

it's not you're like you're like hmm poison ivy

okay she just got her hair up in a bun and she's

wearing glasses she made her voice deeper yeah

yeah and just it's You can tell I mean immediately

from the beginning of the episode when you see

her sitting by the I think she's sitting by a

waterfall Holding a flower You can you don't

see her face, but you know, it's her Yeah, I

mean, I think there could have been a little

bit more You know mystery involved in terms of

that just because I found it was a little you

know It gave it away right at the beginning for

me. I don't think oh, yeah Yeah, I don't think

you have to be like you don't need to be smart

to figure out who the villain of this episode

is No, not at all. Yeah, so I mean I would have

liked that but yeah, so what did you think Mike?

I really loved it like I said before I like it

more so for the fact of the character development

for Alfred and The fact that hey he has a love

interest course. This is the only episode she

ever appears in and I really like it for that

fact. I don't you know I mean It's your typical,

you know, scheme for someone to lure people and,

you know, to lure people to somewhere and steal

their money. I mean, that's really what it's

all about. But in this one, it has a twist because

Poison Ivy is using tree toxins and creating

tree people. I liked it. It's an episode I can

watch multiple times. It's an episode I have

watched multiple times. But as you said it is,

you know, it's it's kind of predictable from

the very beginning of who's the who the villain

is Yeah, what about you Steve? Well, as you said

you can definitely tell by the plant and spa,

you know tell you stuff at the very beginning

I think that they they make it funny that the

fact that it's a you know, one of those day spas

Oh, you can you can get eternal youth blah blah

blah and then now if it's like oh I could do

that, you know, cuz his friend does it and so

It's like the jump off the bridge analogy. If

you do it, I'll do it too. It's not one of my

favorite episodes, but I'm not all that keen

on Ivy anyway, in any form. I can definitely

say this is one of her stronger ones, only because

it's more thought out. She actually brings people

voluntarily to become her plant victims. And

I like that she almost got Batman until he cheated

by spilling the - The toxin, yeah. Yes, into

the enzyme and made a tree to splat ivy against

the ceiling. Yeah, I know but what I like about

this episode is when you see her going through

her forest with all the people She's turned into

trees and I think she breaks off the earring

or something of one of the trees one of the tree

people And you see Batman's face and Batman's

just like you're a fanatic Yeah, and and like

you really serious have to get violent cuz she

just breaks it. She's like, I don't care I can

break her neck if I wanted to That's that's where

you get it where you at what you're going there

cuz I've never you never really see her be Violent

and then you get a hint of that in this episode.

But yeah, I liked it Yeah, very very awesome.

As I said simply for the whole Alfred storyline

and the fact that it's really really funny You

know I can I can watch this one a number of times

over and not over and over again, like all at

once. But, you know, you know, every now and

then I can. This versus dreams and darkness,

I can watch this more than that. Yeah, I don't

I don't really get tired of watching this episode.

I mean, it's really enjoyable. I can actually,

you know, sit back and watch it a couple of times

because it does have an interesting storyline.

And it, you know, I like it. I mean, I like the

whole day spa being bad aspect. That's kind of

what I like about it. And I like the whole with

Alfred with Maggie kind of love, little love,

little lovebirds going on right there where she

I think he kisses her on the cheek and she's

like, oh, you are feeling younger, aren't you?

Yeah, that I love that. That made me laugh. I'm

like, oh, Alfred. Like, yeah, that was really

cute. But yeah, pretty much sums up the episode

for me. I mean, I really liked it. And you guys

have anything else to add? I will say about her

voice actress, Diane Parishing, probably one

of the only times in the DCAU where the same

voice actor or actress has played the same character

throughout the entire thing because Diane has

played Poison Ivy from BTAS. in Batman inventions

the video game all the way through to Justice

League in a better world she was the Justice

Lords universe Poison Ivy as well so I like the

fact that they kept with the same voice actress

throughout whereas like Batgirl has changed a

couple times you know stuff like that so I really

enjoyed that any final thoughts on Eternal Youth

Steve? Um, well there there are a couple well,

like there's a production inconsistency how Basically

stating how the hell did she get out of the prison

and pretty poison? after you know Trying to kill

Harvey Dent and the fact that it doesn't explain

how she escaped She's generally not one that

can just all of a sudden escape Like the Joker

or so on. Yeah, she's not I mean, it's not like

she has a giant freeze gun that she can just,

you know, blast the wall. Well, they take that

away from freeze when he goes in there, so. Yeah,

true. What was it? This is one of the few times

that Bruce Wayne goes upstairs into the Wayne

Manor while still in the Batsuit. Yep. Again,

it's really weird seeing stuff like that. It's

really weird seeing, like... Again, I've talked

about the Justice Lords episode of Justice League

because it kind of ties in here, but seeing the

Batmobile in Metropolis during the day in Justice

Lords and seeing Batman during the day, it's

just so weird because Batman is a figure of the

night. Yeah, that is a little weird, but yeah.

Any other thoughts? I think that's it. I think

that's it. And that's it for this episode. We'll

it comes to clocks, I am king. On guard! Give

it up, Fugit. Hill committed no crime against

you. He did worse. He made me late! And we're

back. So, final thoughts on the episodes? I liked

them. Um, I'd have to say that, uh, Appointment

in Crime Ali - Appointment in Crime Ali, Clock

King, and Eternal Youth are my favorites. Mad

as a Hatter, I like that as well, but those three

would be my favorites out of these ones. Dreams

in Darkness was just too out there for me. What

about you, Tara? I'm gonna have, you know mine

are kind of similar to yours except I'm gonna

have to say I actually really liked Mad as a

Hatter as my top one just because of the whole

Alice in Wonderland theme going on in there and

then my next one would probably be The Clock

King followed by actually Eternal Youth and then

the last one for me would be Dreams in Darkness

and just because I mean Yeah, it really screws

with your head. But overall, the episodes we

discussed today, it was a good mix of episodes,

and they all have interesting storylines and

they were interesting to watch. I definitely

don't have any dislikes in this mix of episodes,

but my least favorite one would be Dreams in

Darkness just because it's really hard to follow.

But yeah, they were good. I would have to say

overall that my favorite episode was The Clock

King. just because I've always liked The Clot

King. So I'd have to say that's my number one

episode of the night. It's kind of, I'm kind

of stuck in between the rest of the four just

because I like them, but The Clot King for me

has more of a attachment. Yeah. So nothing against

the rest of them because I've seen so far in

the duration of the show far worse than any of

these So I'm going to say that I'd probably give

these all tied for my number two spot Just because

I could still watch them all Cool, but the clock

king is one I can watch over and over and not

get bored with so yes, I like all of them tonight
