About this Episode

The hosts break down four episodes from the Batman: The Animated Series, diving into the origins of Two-Face and the mob-focused plot of It's Never Too Late. They also discuss the polarizing Penguin debut in I've Got Batman in My Basement and praise the emotional depth of the series-defining episode, Heart of Ice. Throughout the conversation, they explore the production trivia, casting choices, and the long-lasting impact these stories had on both future comic books and the wider DC Animated Universe.

This is Batgirl, and this episode of Legends

of the Dark Knight features Stephen C. Phillips

and Mike Blanchard. Welcome to Legends of the

Dark Knight. I'm your host Steve Megatron Phillips

and joining me in this batty episode are the

dynamic duo TFG1 Mike aka Robin and Tara the

rising star Blair aka Batgirl. Hey guys. Hey

That is right I called you Robin like just to

be clear I'm Nightwing. God damn it for the wing

You do like your Knight Rider. So that makes

sense. Anyways, what's been going on? Not much.

Not that it matters to this show, because this

is a cartoon review specific show, but I have

been listening to the new Nickelback album non

-stop since 11 .45 last night. Let's see, I've

got three episodes of Tooncast Beyond recorded,

I've got one edited, I'm editing two more tonight.

Video versions of those will be up sometime this

week. Transformation Animation podcast is coming

to a close. We are still prepping the guide to

2012 for GCRN. What else? We had a fan, Vacuminator,

basically review the network, which is very cool.

He did a video review, so very awesome. You guys

can go over to our Facebook page, facebook .com

slash GeekCastRadioNetwork. You'll be able to

see the video posted on there. Other than that,

that's it. Well, and I myself have been playing

DC Universe online, which kind of fills right

into this because you have... Kevin Conroy back

is Batman. You have Mark Hamill as Joker and

Arlene Sorkin as Harley Quinn. And then of course

a bunch of other people that don't matter to

me because they're in the DCAU. Not that they're

bad or aren't good, but yes, some of them are

bad. Booster gold. Don't even get me started.

But anyways... No, the game overall is fun, which

you'll hear in the eventual released episode

of XRG as soon as I iron out that train wreck.

Because it was a train wreck, so... I didn't

do it. Nobody saw me do it. You can't prove anything.

DCU Online is awesome. Just have to throw that

out there. Yeah, it is. Yes, so... It's a game

I get easily frustrated with, though. Yeah, when

the server doesn't work, I hear you. Oh, no,

no, no. Not even that. I can't beat Huntress

to save my life. You just suck, man. Shut up.

Are you playing as the villain? Yeah, I'm playing

as the villain. I'm playing as the hero. No,

the hero campaign was boring to me. I did both.

I just got it, so you know. The villains are

definitely more fun. Let's put it that way. Yeah.

You get to be a villain and destroy heroes and

villains. Nice. Especially if you work for the

Joker. Exactly. And that's what I did. So I get

to beat up Bane and Huntress and so on and so

forth. But no, that game's been fun. I'm currently

trying to edit XRG. I should have that by Wednesday

release before Thanksgiving, so yes, it will

have a debut before then. But yeah, I'm done.

So what are you doing, Tara? Well, I just wrapped

two film shoots. I was on so many film shoots

for school. And I just finished them. They went

very, very well. And now I'm just getting ready

to wind down the semester. It's my last in -school

semester. And then I'm going to be on placement

in sixth semester, hopefully going to be. doing

my placement somewhere at a local TV station

here in Toronto because that's where I kind of

want to work. I want to be a broadcaster and

that's where I'm headed but pretty much had a

very very busy month and now it's getting quiet.

Been doing a lot of gaming in the last week or

so getting back into that. playing DCU Online,

playing Dragon Age, and I just got a game called

Saints Row 2, and it's pretty awesome. But yeah,

that's basically what I have enough to. Awesome.

Yeah, that'd be really cool, having you be on

TV. I hope so. I hope so. It won't be for a few

years though. I'm gonna be behind the camera

probably for a few years. But hey, you gotta

get your foot in the door somehow. Yes, you do.

So with that, we will come back with the first

episode. Where you going, Harvey? You can't get

away from me. See what I mean? Stay away! I want

no part of you! First up is Two -Face, which

is a two -part episode of the first season. It

depicts the transformation of Gotham City District

Attorney Harvey Dent into the villain Two -Face.

Yeah, this is one of the best episodes. This

is one of the best two -parters and one of the

best overall stories out of the entire series.

Oh yeah, definitely can't deny that. And then

you also get the awesome title card at the beginning

where you see the coin flip and you see half

the body and then the other half is in darkness.

This episode was done so well. It had such a

great storyline and I really enjoyed seeing seeing

the origins of Two -Face and I just have to say

it was depicted really well in the animated series.

And definitely getting to know Two -Face more

than I have known him in the past. So, really

great episode. An interesting bit. Now, I've

kind of trained myself to almost know everything

about the DCAU. This is one bit of trivia I never

knew. Al Pacino was originally offered to voice

Two -Face, but he turned it down. Richard Moll

was then cast as DA Harvey Dent. Can you imagine

this episode with Scarface as Two -Face? I can

imagine that actually. I could imagine it. It

would be cool, but I would never take back what

we have now. Oh, no, no, no, no. Yeah, no, not

at all. And what I find really interesting is

that Richard Moll I didn't recognize the name

at first. I thought it was a different actor.

So I looked him up and I'm like My god, it's

bull from night court Huh, I've never watched

that To be honest, I wouldn't change his current

voice actor at all Oh, no, I wouldn't change

it either But I was just saying as far as the

trivia goes I thought that was an interesting

bit of trivia about that They originally offered

it to Pacino. That is interesting. Actually,

I remember reading that I'm like Scarface Yeah,

I definitely like this character. I think the

The whole aesthetic it's kind of hard to get

used to his face when you see both halves look

exactly the same Yeah, knowing that you know

he's gonna be two -faced. Yeah but I love the

The whole the drawn -out way that they go through

this first half of the episode you know having

a thorn Basically kidnap him and then leave them

in this warehouse with explosives and gasoline

and all those chemicals. Yeah, I mean that's...

and the other thing about this is that Bruce

Wayne and Harvey Dent are friends and, you know,

Bruce couldn't get to him in time as Batman to

save him. So there's yet another thing that Batman

has to feel guilty about. That's what really

touched me in this episode was seeing the friendship

between dent and Wayne and Like he said like

him trying to save him as Batman and he couldn't

and there was Bruce Wayne He has to live with

the fact that his friend is not his really his

friend anymore. He's actually his enemy Yeah,

and that was kind of upsetting like I actually

did get a little upset seeing that because I

mean, this was a good man I mean he had it everything

He had everything and especially his fiance I

think it's his fiance. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Grace, yeah. Yeah. And Grace, seeing him after

the accident, it hits you so hard. Oh, yeah.

That whole scene with the lightning and then

the face reveal and her just utter shock, that's

just like a punch in the gut because that scene

is so emotional. And it just goes to show you

that these writers know how to do a cliffhanger

because that's how you end part one where it's

You know he reveals his face and she faints and

then that's it. That scene actually almost reminded

me of the scene from Beauty and the Beast when

you see the beast's face. When you see his whole

body and his whole face for the first time in

the dungeon when Belle sees him in the light.

It was almost exactly like that but ten times

worse. She, uh, she's shocked, right? She covers

her face, but it's different because with Grace

and Harvey, they were supposed to get married.

Yeah. And he loves this woman and he's just like,

oh shit. Yeah. Grace's name is a modification

of Gilda Grace Dent, Dent's wife in the comics.

So they didn't just, you know, she isn't someone

that they just threw in there to give him a fiance.

They're still, you know, making homages to Comic

book characters, which is another thing that

I really like about about the people that are

in charge of the show And I kind of like that

they gave Dent in this one I kind of like that

they gave him kind of a split personality based

on he has a an issue with built -up anger mm

-hmm and It just was I Don't know. It's just

a nice interesting twist that he was already

becoming two -faced before he was two -faced

Yeah And yeah, and then I like I don't know if

you guys are done with part one, but I Know in

part two it's kind of nice to see him get that

double -colored suit which you know perfectly

Mirrors the other side. Oh Yeah I mean, because

part one, you see Harvey Dent and you see the

transformation. And like I said, it leaves you

on that cliffhanger. Part two, you see Big Bad

Harv and you see that whole side of his personality.

Part two was a lot more interesting than part

one, I'll say that. Yeah. Yeah, I definitely

like that more. Yeah, especially when you see

him just turn into this total badass. You see

his whole dark side just come out and just take

over. And you know he's not Harvey Dent anymore,

he's Two -Face. And his evil side has definitely

just come out and taken complete control of his

character. And I think you know from that point

on that Harvey Dent is never gonna be the same.

Oh no, not at all. Yeah, and that's basically

what made this episode just so epic. And it's

even more awesome when you see Two -Face in Arkham

City with Catwoman. That's pretty awesome. I

like this version of Two -Face the best, though.

It definitely is the best version. I did not

like the version in the Dark Knight, to be honest.

That one's alright, but I just think with voice

acting and animation in video games, this is

the best version as far as that goes. Live action,

that's a whole different ball game. Oh definitely.

I think we're going to continue to see that in

the DCAU. Oh yeah. Is that these are pretty much

the ultimates of everyone that could have played

these parts. Nothing taken away from anybody

that's done it since or before, but I think these

are the definitive greats that have given life

to these characters like no one else has. Oh

yeah, yeah, you're right. When I was watching

this episode back, I had to almost do a triple

take because Man -at -Arms' daughter is in this.

You have a He -Man Batman crossover. Dr. Nora

Crest is voiced by Linda Gehry who also voiced

Tila and Sorceress and a bunch of other voices

in the Masters of the Universe cartoon from the

80s. So that was kind of awesome. And I think

this was one of the last things she ever did

because she passed away of brain cancer in 1995.

Geez yeah, but but I mean what when I was going

through looking at the research for this And

I saw that she was listed as part of the castle

like wait. What's Tila doing in the Batman show?

But very very cool That she was able to do something

Like right before she passed away Overall the

story is very well done two faces motive motivated

by revenge because thorn has gone after his stuff

and thorn wants to get at harvey whereas in part

two it's two face that has the goods on on thorn

and thorn i mean it's they're basically mirror

opposites of each other the two episodes and

i guess that goes to the fact of you know two

faces two different sides of dent have to basically

agree with everything that you said Mike and

Just add that again. It was just very well -written

great character development. It definitely got

me hooked and Two -faced is probably one of the

more interesting villains in the Batman universe

in this episode definitely gave him did him justice

and I highly recommend you watch rewatch this

episode or watch it if you haven't for the first

time and You won't be disappointed Yeah, before

I let Tara jump to an article she wants to mention

I have a few Little trivia facts to roll out

for this two -parter This is the tenth episode

of the series to be produced mark the time when

the writers felt the series really took an Adult

turn in for the better. Oh Yeah The scene where

Dent first sees his new appearance in the hospital

was intended to be similar to the scene in the

live -action film Batman where gangster Jack

Napier aka Jack Nicholson first sees his new

appearance as the Joker Yeah, I so got that that

that that was a really easy reference see I didn't

catch that first time around. Oh, yeah, I caught

that The final shot in which two faces coin lands

Good heads was used in both live -action movies

Batman forever and the Dark Knight is to face

respectively both of them fall to their deaths

He up The the last one I'm gonna mention is the

idea of Harvey Dent aka two -face wearing a half

white half black split down the middle Armani

suit Has been copied by the comics since this

episode Yeah Which is kind of interesting that

they made such an impact that it took into comic

form Much like Harley Quinn will later. Yep.

I Mean this series, you know, you have people

that are comic book fans that are comic book

geeks and they set out and they created something

the entire series that future comics could then

adapt and use from this series yep so with that

Yeah, the article sorry, yeah The article that

I wanted to talk about was actually I'm not sure

if it was this week or the week before on Crack

.com I can't remember the title of it, but they

did the 10 or 15 worst revamps reinventions of

Batman ever done by DC Comics, and a couple of

them I found really hilarious and was shocked

that they were actually even considered and were

published. There was Pirate Batman. There was

Cowboy Batman. There was Nazi Batman. There was

also, I believe, a sort of take on Frankenstein

Batman, where Bruce, this one I found really

strange. Bruce Wayne is a scientist and he had

his Alfred is called Alfredo sort of like Igor

from Frankenstein and they yeah, somehow he finds

his dead father's brain and tries to bring back

his father and Creates Batman. That's how he

creates Batman and Another kind of alternate

universe revamp of Batman. It's Hollywood Batman

And Batman, it exists how we know it as a fictional

TV show, whatever, it's not real. And it turns

out the main actor playing Batman, he has some

sort of accident, and of course it causes him

to think he really is Batman, and he's not just

an actor playing Batman. and somehow he's able

he steals a bunch of like the props from the

set and goes on this whole this huge vigilante

mission and goes out fighting crime like Batman

and uh yeah but the one that I found the most

offensive probably was the Nazi Batman because

of how it was set during World War II and on

the design of Batman I can't even believe this

was that DC did this, on Batman's costume, instead

of the bat symbol, there was a swastika. And

I just was shocked at that. You know, they had

some pretty, they had some funny ones, then they

had just this one. I just, I didn't really get

it. Yeah, Crack .com is about as useful as The

Onion is. I really don't like that website at

all. It can be more useful than the onion and

the fact that it has stupid stuff Much like its

title for this the seven stupidest attempts to

reinvent Batman, which I saw on Michael Dodd's

Facebook page earlier this week. Yeah It should

have been called the seven bat shit craziest

ideas to reinvent reinvent Batman. That's what

I thought too Yeah, I Like I said, I cannot even

believe that these actually were published and

printed and people were able to actually buy

these at their comic book stores. They're the

craziest ideas. I mean, Vampire Batman? Well,

I mean, Vampire Batman kind of makes sense a

little bit because, well... He's a bat. It's

a bat, yeah. I mean, that kind of makes a little

bit of sense. Pirate Batman sounds like something

that Batman the Brave and the Bold would do.

Well, they did it when they brought Batman back

from the dead. Yeah, yeah. You know, but Nazi

Batman, are you serious? That's what I was shocked

at. This is so freaking stupid. It's offensive.

Yeah, it is offensive. It's it it's very offensive,

but it's like I mean That's like any episode

that does a Nazi storyline I'm not a big fan

of Rain Nazi like storyline. I think the only

one that I really give exception to is Oh was

that Crap. The Savage time in Justice League,

where you've got them going back to making sure

that Vandal Savage doesn't take stuff over. I

mean, that was kind of a Nazi storyline, which

it had a kick -ass, Batman had a kick -ass suit

in that one, but it was basically still, they're

still trying to stop the Nazis. They're not,

you know, they're not having Batman dress up

as one. So, I don't know. Exactly, I mean like

putting that... Putting that on Batman. It was

just so offensive. Yeah, I Just I just don't

get it and Just I'm even looking at it right

now and I mean if you look at the cover of the

Batman the Hollywood Knight Yeah, it looks so

stupid I can't even I can't even fathom that

and What was I gonna and and the other one? Looking

at pirate Batman Pirate Batman looks like a cross

between Pirate of the Caribbean and Batman. Not

gonna lie. Yeah, I swear to God, if Johnny Dipp

ever puts on a bat suit, I will kill myself.

He acts like Jack Sparrow. Yeah, no. There was

another one I forgot to mention before we move

on. There was also, just looking at this, there's

Batman, the Bat Priest, actually. Oh god. So

yeah, Two -Face is an amazing, amazing episode,

one of the best of the series. Yes. So, with

that, we'll be moving on. The mob war in Gotham

continues tonight. Rival crime families led by

Rupert Thorne and Arnold Stromwell continue to

battle for control of the city's underworld.

Hey, that's a nice picture of you, boss. Pipe

down. According to Police Commissioner Gordon,

mob violence is intensifying. What we have here

is a battle between an older crime boss and his

younger rival for control of the rackets in Gotham.

And in this case, it looks like youth has the

edge. I'd say Stromwell is about to be retired.

We'll see about that. But the struggle may now

be taking a tragic twist with the reported disappearance

of Arnold Stromwell's only son, Joseph. Next

up is... It's Never Too Late. It depicts the

climax of a long gang war between rival Gotham

City bosses, Arnold Stromwell and Rupert Thorne.

Sensing an opportunity to resolve it peaceably,

Batman attempts to convince Stromwell to retire.

Yeah, this one was It was very good and it was

but I mean it it's so obvious in the beginning

that the priest is his brother I Mean because

he he constant strong will is constantly going

through those flashbacks of him and his kid brother

and he gets stuck on the tracks or his brother

gets stuck on the tracks and later on when the

priest shows up, it's so obvious that it that

it's his brother. Yeah, I didn't quite get it

at first, but yeah, it makes sense. Suffice it

to say, this was not one of my favorite episodes.

It's got some great music cues. The story was

well thought out and again, it's another one

of those mob stories where it's basically mob

bosses versus each other But it's also a very

redeeming story I would say it's you know, it's

not an episode that I could watch over and over

and over again This is something every so often

for me really what what gets me in this one is

is the music and how they Have a music really

told the story as well Yeah, I I got like a godfather

type vibe from this episode Always enough he

can't refuse But um, yeah, I Not that I have

anything against mob stuff. I just this I mean

in this episode was written very well just like

most of the DCAU and I just It wasn't one of

the stronger ones for me. No, I I still like

the fact that you know Batman disguised as a

hobo again he's dropping and The fact that they

have foreshadowing to what's gonna happen later

And in as far as the relationships going on But

yeah, I it was nice to see you like, you know

an old Gangster kind of just saying I'm done

It just I can't do it anymore. I'm done. And

then thorns like hell. Yeah But yeah, that that's

about the extent of my thoughts on the episode

was just Was just really funny. I like the whole

gang war kind of concept going on here I thought

it was really interesting and then and then the

whole about how there's the old gang the older

gang leader and the young gun coming in. I found

it really interesting and really hilarious and

I was really drawn to this episode and it really

captivated my attention. I definitely can say

that I was not bored watching this episode. It

was very interesting. A couple of continuity

bits. Stromwell apparently makes good on his

promise to retire since after this episode, Thorne

is Gotham's reigning crime boss. Well, that'll

change when Roland Daggett rolls around, but...

And then also, Stromwell appears only once more

in the series in Robin's reckoning and flashbacks

that take place before the events of this episode.

Yeah, that's a little strange having the Robin

ones kind of... weirdly in and out of continuity.

Well, I mean, but see, the Robin stuff, when

we get to Robin's reckoning, the whole point

of that story is that all of the stuff that happened

in that happened before, I mean, that technically

is Robin's origin, so that happened all before

everything else that has happened in the series

at this point. True. Some of the trivia is, there's

some similarities between this episode and the

stories of Charles Dickens, a Christmas Carol,

and the film It's a Wonderful Life. With Batman

acting as an angel, showing a man familiar places

and jogging memories of his past life in an effort

to change his mind. It also seems to draw from

angels with dirty faces, about a gangster and

a priest who were best friends in childhood,

finding themselves on opposite sides of the fence.

And again, yet another episode where Linda Gary

guest stars as Constance Blaine. You got Townsend

Coleman in here. Let's see, who else? Peter Jason

as Mason, Eugene Roach, John Vernon as Rupert

Thorn. It just goes to show you that Andrea Romano

puts together a great voice cast for each not

only I mean I know and I know Andrea Romano was

doing all the DC movies now and she's doing a

lot of other stuff as well, but For a voice and

casting director to be able to put together an

amazing voice cast for each Episode of a series.

That's just awesome Yeah, definitely so anything

else I Think that's it for this one. That's it

for me Then we'll be moving on! You should have

taken your own advice! Batman's in trouble! Come

on! I don't know about this. It's those delinquents!

Stop them! Next up is... I've got Batman in my

basement. A young amateur detective, Sherman

Grant, and his best friend, Roberta, witness

the penguin receiving the stolen Vanelloster

Fabergé egg from his thugs. When Batman appears,

Penguin hits him with a gas pellet that severely

weakens him. Now it's up to the few kids to protect

him. Yeah. A Fabergé egg story. Great. This almost

sounds like the, uh... Ah, man. Eggman from the,

uh, 66's Batman. Yup. Pretty much. I'm sorry,

this episode was so cute. This episode was so

fucking bad. No, it was so cute. It was so bad.

I... For the first appearance of the Penguin,

this episode was bad. I'll give you that. It's

not the Penguin's strongest episode, but it's

almost like Christmas with the Joker. I liked

Christmas with the Joker. No, I liked it too.

but it wasn't one of the stronger ones where

you have, you know, other episodes in there that

better display the character. It wasn't a bad

episode for the penguin in here, but it's definitely

not his best. But it does show off some of what

his crazy self is capable of, namely the gas

pellets. Showing that he has a liking for expensive

eggs with jewels on them And that giant bird

just reaffirms my fear of birds up close He likes

vultures, yeah, it's just very creepy Why so

I'm I'm curious you guys just you Mike you just

didn't like the episode like really no I mean,

it's it's your basic Kid story where one kid

believes in Batman and the other one You know,

the other kid is pretty much a bully and Roberta's

stuck in the middle and it's like I Feel like

I'm in elementary school all over again Well,

so you didn't find it cute at all in the sense

where you see the kids driving Batman's car like

the Batmobile I mean Not really. No. No. Oh cuz

I'm I guess I'm like the odd man out here Really

odd woman out. Odd woman out, I should say, because

I really like the episode. See, I like the episode

in the sense that this was one of the first DCAU

that I saw of the Batman the Animated series.

So I can see where it would have been bad, had

I not seen it then. But it holds a different

place for me because of the fact that I was a

kid watching it and seeing these kids having

to protect Batman for a change and drive his

car even though they didn't have a clue what

they were doing. And they're just being chased

by some thugs, the Penguin and his vulture. I

mean, it's crazy that they even had to do that.

But I mean, Batman was kind of out cold. Yeah,

this. this episode is such a throwaway episode

this episode is such filler um you know you could

have like okay i i get it the bird injured him

and he and he needs to get the antidote i get

that but there are so many different ways you

could have done a penguin debut episode rather

than doing this and and having it be the QC kids

ride the Batmobile, this, that, and the other

thing, everything else. Hell, even Bruce Timm

said so himself that this episode and this story

in general suck. I could see that it's filler.

I mean, that's kind of obvious, but it's not

bad. So, looks like you're the odd one out this

time. Well, I like it. I have no issues with

it, but everyone has different opinions. I mean,

I can kind of see where Mike's coming from in

terms of maybe the story, and I mean, yes, it

wasn't Penguin's best episode, but I'm a sucker

for when there's like kids and superheroes, so

that's why I really liked it. But yeah, and I

also like the fact that they show the Gotham

newspaper. Pint -sized Pinkertons pluck Penguin.

That was really cute. And that is a tongue twister.

Try saying that five times fast. Yeah, no. Betcha

you can't. Not gonna try. The one interesting

bit is one of the kids was voiced by Rob Paulson.

Jay was voiced by Rob Paulson. Huh, I did not

catch that. I should have caught that. Yes, you

should have. What the hell's wrong with you?

Considering I know most of his voice range. Damn,

now I'm gonna have to like relisten to that part

and affirm it. But uh, but yeah, geez, it's crazy

You know obviously with the trivia this marks

the first episode Or first appearance of the

joke or of the penguin. I got the Joker on the

brain Which Paul Williams does and I kind of

found it disturbing that they deliberately modeled

him after the character from Batman Returns He

does get a redesign later. That's one of the

instances I like the redesign because it reminds

me of the 66 Batman. I think they changed his

voice too. Yeah, it was no longer Paul Williams,

it was somebody else. The voice I could take

it or leave it on either way, but I think I like

this voice better, but the appearance later.

Yeah, well, I I think the change was at the time

of this series and at the time of this episode

it probably coincided with the movie and it just

just look at this episode you have Penguin and

a giant bird and of course in Batman Was gonna

say Batman and Robin what the hell in Batman

returns you have penguin and all the all the

penguins and all this and all that and everything

else Whereas later penguin actually he doesn't

just get a character design Retool he gets Character

retooling because he's now Supposedly quote -unquote

reformed and he's a nightclub owner. So they

would have had to have redone his design Yeah,

whereas here he's literally a scumbag Honestly

surprised they did not get Danny DeVito for him

to voice this episode Probably because Harvey

Bullock sounds like Danny DeVito But uh, but

yeah, I I definitely found that kind of weird

because Batman Returns when I was a kid scared

the hell out of me Just because of the joke or

of the penguin but yes But yes, uh, I I like

this episode but not It wasn't one of my favorites

of today. No, it's okay, but it's not one I could

watch ever again, probably. Anything else? No,

I'm good. I'm good. Alright, then we'll be moving

on. This is how I'll always remember you. Surrounded

by winter, forever young, forever beautiful.

Rest well, my love. The monster who took you

from me will soon learn that revenge is a dish

best served cold. Last up today is Heart of Ice.

As a ballerina... Dances in her glass dome a

strange armored man talks to the small dancer

Promising a revenge against a monster for taking

her from him. Yeah, this is by far probably The

best episode of the entire series as far as how

it was written the story The fact that mr. Freeze

isn't just a You know Typical maniacal right

off character. They actually gave him character

depth I'd say so far out of all the characters

that have been introduced out of the villains

anyway And he's kind of a villain but a kind

of an anti villain at the same time Just because

of the situation But I'd say him and the Joker

are the only ones that have any kind of depth

at this point. Oh Yeah, yeah Just overall the

animation in this was great. The effects were

great The voice acting was awesome I mean, it's

just a really really great episode and they and

they took this with this being the first episode

that Paul Dini wrote they took this and they

Then incorporated the character of mr. Freeze

from this into the comics I mean, yeah, he was

probably in the comics before but This story

this this tragic character is a much better character

for comics than it was Just an average villain

as he was before Yeah, and I think he's kind

of under underutilized in a lot of the media

They've never done a successful live -action,

and I don't ever expect them to Correct actor

to do so not the governator. I'm mr. Freeze That

is like by far the worst mr. Freeze in the world

at the time when we were young and stupid everybody

liked it I never liked that film. I gotta be

honest well that or the or the I don't know if

it's the following the previous film. I didn't

like either but Suffice it to say that Michael

and Sarah did an awesome awesome. Mr. Freeze.

Oh, yeah, I don't I Think they used vocal effects

on his voice, but they just did it was more of

an echo effect. Yeah and Ferris Boyle Ferris

Boyle was the very first thing Mark Hamill ever

did in the DCIU before the Joker that he recorded

for but right and the only throwaway he did to

begin with yep, but um But yeah, I love the fact

that they have this whole kind of... First of

all, you got Goth Corp, which to me just rings

with... I thought it was Wayne Enterprises. I

think this was like an early Wayne Enterprises,

basically. No, Goth Corp and Wayne Enterprises

are two separate things. It just reminds me of

Lex Corp, but... Yeah, you're right. I mean,

well... Within this episode, you have Wayne Industries,

Wayne Enterprises, Wayne whatever the hell he's

calling his company now. And then Goth Corp was

a rival company. Just like Lexcor and Star Labs

are rival companies. But they were not one and

the same for this. Because Bruce Wayne would

not hire people that... you know, do this kind

of thing to someone. Yeah and I like the fact

that first of all you can see Batman get frozen

with a freeze ray. Oh yeah. Which that was just

exciting to begin with because I not only do

I like the effect that they threw on that for

through the you know how they animated it Mm

-hmm, but it was nice to see how Batman gets

out. Oh, yeah But No, I love I love the fact

also that you know, of course freezes going after

anybody that had anything to do with the fact

that His his wife Nora Who had some kind of a

blood disorder Ended up getting into this this

freeze and you know him getting of course ruined

having to wear this suit yeah it just the the

whole episode is very well written it's kind

of hard to really say anything other than you've

got to watch it oh yeah and I want a freeze gun

everybody wants a freeze gun I would freeze the

road and I don't know I'd shoot some cars and

make them like frozen of course with nobody in

them but I think it'd be funny to make ice cars

yeah With all the compartments on your belt you'd

think there'd be one for tissues which is a reference

to the 1960s Batman series with his bat belt

containing every possible tool to help him in

various situations. I was actually waiting for

shark repellent to come out in this episode.

I was waiting for you know instant you know defying

bat spray or something you know just it would

have been funny but I can see that they're not

going to go that low. They did, however, manage

to have, because Batman had a cold... The chicken

soup gag. Yes. Alfred gave him chicken soup,

which was hot, in a thermos, and somehow Batman

just happens to be still carrying it, and he

dumps it on Mr. Freeze's helmet. and the temperature

causes the helmet to crack and shatter, letting

Freeze pretty much choke and paralyze on the

normal air. And it's nice to see that Batman

sympathizes with him and gives Summer Gleeson

the videotape of Freeze's accident, then leaves

without Freeing the still shivering Boyle who

set this whole thing in motion basically. It

was basically have. You basically have the Joker

setting up Mr. Freeze. Essentially. Now, I looked

at the air date on this and I know we just started

this podcast and we are going in the episode

order that's on the complete series DVD set,

which is also the four volume sets. September

7th, 1992. Why didn't Joel Schumacher? take cues

from this episode and make that movie better.

Well, he took aspects of the suit, and then he

picked a guy with a similar face before the mask,

you know, before the eyepieces. You could kind

of see a little bit of Arnold in there, I mean,

even though you know it's not. But they totally

botched that. You don't have an Austrian guy

doing the voice of Frieze. He has to sound like

a cold... monotone person yeah and Arnold you

just don't get that I hear Terminator and I hear

you know Total Recall I don't hear that in him

yeah you know it's funny of the way that we see

Mr. Freeze after this and we'll get to that I

don't I don't I don't want to spoil it for people

I know people have already probably seen those

episodes but just His whole character development

throughout the rest of the DCAU is just really

creepy Yeah He kind of goes from misunderstood

Trying to avenge his wife to Really freaking

weird. Yeah by the by the end very freaking weird

He gets more weird towards the middle and then

kind of somewhat regains composure by the end

and then loses it all He kind of lets it freeze

in hell. Cold chance in hell. But overall, Heart

of Ice is a very, very well done episode. The

animation studio actually were the ones that...

Bruce Tim didn't even ask for this, I don't think.

They were the ones that put the frosted effect.

Freeze's dome helmet and it made it look so much

cooler than what they had originally had I guess

and I just really like that that was awesome

oh yeah and starting with the continuity bit

Freeze believed that Nora died in the accident

and it's later revealed that her cryo tube was

salvaged and preserved by Grant Walker in Deep

Freeze yeah is newspaper clippings from Nothing

to Fear and Pretty Poison appear on the back

computer. Which you probably wouldn't catch that

unless you're actually like 100 % paying attention

to every little key element. They had Batman

under my god at the tape and it's unusual in

the cartoons so the sensors, you know, obviously

blocked it. Especially for the fact that Toon

Disney ends up showing it yeah they also have

various inconsistencies as far as the animation

yeah such as freeze froze some henchmen wearing

shoes and then Batman thaws them and the shoes

are gone apparently you know his ice repellent

bat spray destroys shoes Batman is posing as

a security guard and reaches into his utility

belt to pull out a key card and Does so the card

is not visible and then the next frame it magically

appears So he has you know miniature micro cards

that inflate into full cards Yeah Notice I'm

trying to put a nice spin on it to make it make

sense Yeah, and then of course we have the ever

so filmation Logos twice in the episode Batman's

chest logo colors are reversed in the commentary

Paldini and Bristem said this was delivered a

subtle nod to past cartoons with their usual

animation errors That's funny that they did that

on purpose. Yeah, they're like, yeah, what the

hell people will notice Yeah, I did see that

and I was like, yeah, why the heck would they

do that? I mean I Personally don't care. I mean,

I don't particularly like it, but I don't care

one way or the other It was only like half a

second. I know it's it was just a quick, you

know click nod. Okay, you're moving on Yeah,

but yeah This was the first episode directed

by Bruce Tim and the first episode of the series

written by Paul Dini And as you can see you have

gold here. Oh Yeah Should we bring up the fact

that we have Star Wars references? Yeah, you

can go ahead with that. The episode contains

two references to the film Star Wars The Empire

Strikes Back. The first one being Batman trapped

upside down in the cold cave is similar to what

happened to Luke Skywalker early in the movie.

And then Batman returns a criminal partially

frozen by Mr. Freeze to health using a similar

device to the Back to Tank that revives Luke.

Interesting, Luke's, obviously Luke Skywalker

was played by Mark Hamill who also voices the

Joker and - Ferris Boyle. Yeah, Ferris Boyle.

But, yeah. Another interesting tidbit which actually

comes from the comics. Ferris Boyle does not

appear again in the animated series, but he does

appear in the comic books, Batman Gotham Adventures,

in which he's killed by a robotic doppelganger

of Mr. Freeze made by Nora Freeze's new husband

to frame Victor Freeze. This is exactly why I

don't read comics. I've read those comics. Some

of them are far -fetched. I didn't even discover

these until recently. I think I'll jump into

some of the quotes. Since I haven't jumped into

very many of this episode. Okay Batman yells

freeze to mr. Freeze and then he says that's

mr. Freeze to you Yeah, and You know you've mentioned

the Alfred with all the compartments on your

belt. You'd think there'd be one for tissues

Yeah, it's just so weird to me to hear Kevin

Conroy sneeze or cough in this episode It would

be Actually weird if he actually had a cold and

did this I Think that's it for our device. I

mean the episode speaks for itself. I mean, it's

just great. Yep So with that we'll be back after

Mr. Dent, I have a question. When are you going

to marry that gorgeous fiancée of yours? Better

marry her soon, Harve. I just might steal her

away myself. You do and I'll prosecute. Harve,

you better look at this. The judge just threw

out the case against Thorn's men. But why? The

warrant wasn't complete. The judge said he had

no choice. He had to let them go. Had to? But...

but... No! I spent three months on that raid!

He can't overturn! The fool! He's been blocked!

Like all the rest! Harv, take it easy. This kind

of behavior doesn't go over well with the voters.

Let go of me, you rich twit! Harvey! I don't

know what this person has against Goth Corp,

but we've always looked upon ourselves as the

people company. If this man has a problem, we're

willing to listen. The Batman! Put me down! Freeze!

That's Mr. Freeze to you. This is a personal

vendetta. It doesn't concern you. It's my concern

now. Since you ally yourself with my enemies,

you leave me no choice. And we're back. So, final

thoughts on the episodes today? Two -Face and

Heart of Ice are the favorites, I think. I definitely

have to agree with you. I think Heart of Ice

definitely stands as the strongest of the five

reviewed in this episode. Yeah. With Two -Face

as a close second. The other two ultimately are

at the bottom of my list for the episode. I'd

not say that they're bad. They're just not my

ultimate favorites. But definitely Heart of Ice,

I'd have to say, is my favorite of this whole

set today. Yeah. Okay, I really liked, of course,

Two -Face was my favorite episode of this, going

along with you guys. But I also really did like

Batman is in My Basement, as I said earlier.

I just like those two episodes. They really stand

out for me. And Heart of Ice, I didn't really

get a chance to really get into it that much,

but it was pretty good just to see Mr. Freeze.

But otherwise, yeah, definitely Two -Face wins

for me this round. Awesome. So with that, thank
