This is Batgirl, and this episode of Legends

of the Dark Knight features Stephen C. Phillips

and Mike Blanchard. Hello and welcome to Legends

of the Dark Knight I'm your host Steve Megatron

Phillips and joining me is my ever questionable

host Questionable little fuck you calling questionable,

you know like the Riddler. Oh, okay. I tried

to work some kind of bat Audio into it anyways,

yes TF2 and Mike hello Hello and joining us for

the first time and most certainly not the last

in Legends of the Dark Knight is our bat -tastic

host Tara the rising star Hello that girl ladies

and gentlemen. Yes. I am back girl. I am vengeance.

I am the night I am that girl Yay Welcome aboard.

Thank you. It's good to be here. So what have

you guys been up to? Same old same old podcasting

as usual Tooncast Beyond has gotten off the ground

with Superhero Squad Show. We're getting ready

to start the DC Universe movies spotlight with

animation aficionados. This Week in Geek is still

going strong with their news. We are coming up

on November topic show for TWIG which will be

snack foods. We'll probably work in some holiday

snack foods since the holidays are coming up

as well. Let's see what else. GCRN has had a

Another site redesign, thank you for that. Well,

we're still altering. Yeah, yeah, it's just some

alterations. The hems needed to be sewn. Yes,

I fixed the menu so it looks actually better

now. It's got more of the modernistic look to

it than it should have. Yes. So, Tara, what have

you been up to? Basically, I am in extreme film

mode at the moment. I am currently involved in

about two film shoots shooting this week, both

for my broadcast and film program. I'm in my

final year and things are getting very busy.

It's a very busy month. Awesome. Yeah, that's

about it. But it's pretty exciting and it's good

to be back on the GeekCast Radio Network again.

Always good to have you back. Thank you. And

as for myself Mostly between that imagery there

we're getting close to wrapping up the Act your

voice out over on behind the voice actors comm

Down to the last four people which by the end

of the week will be down to two Pickards is gonna

run away with that contest at this point. Yes

We kind of knew that getting into it I, yeah,

we already knew that he was going to rank fairly

well at this point. Especially with, and not

that anybody did bad, it's just he's good at

interpreting what he sees and therefore that's

what you're going to get. So, yeah, so other

than that, I've been watching a crap ton of Batman

the Animated series. Actually, I got Through

next episodes content as well But that's besides

the point so anything else anybody Nope, I think

that's it then we're gonna get into some episodes

My fellow citizens it is with great civic pride

that we gather here today to break ground on

the new Gotham Penitentiary Which has been funded

by the Wayne Foundation As you know this project

was the dream of one man And he's with us here

today, Gotham's new district attorney, Harvey

Dent. From this field of weeds and wildflowers

will grow a new institution to build a better,

safer Gotham. First up today is Pretty Poison.

This is the first episode to feature Poison Ivy,

who basically gets her introduction because of

a joint thing set up between Mayor Hill, Harvey

Dent and Bruce Wayne and the Wayne Foundation

to build the Stonegate Penitentiary, leveling

all of the plant life, which sets her off on

a bout of revenge against Harvey Dent and Bruce

Wayne. Yep. Favorite episode, because she's in

it. Yeah, I don't know. Sorry, I'm a huge Poison

Ivy fan. Just have to throw that out there. Yeah,

I mean she's a great character, but I Don't know

she's not one of the I mean she is one of the

main rogues for Batman, but she's not really

Like in this series she's kind of like second

She's kind of like a second -rate villain almost

compared to Joker two -faced penguin. That's

true I mean her whole schtick is the plant thing

and then later on in the series they you know,

redesign her, they, you know, make her, quote

-unquote, lesbian lover with Harley, which, I

don't mind that, but, you know, it's one of those

things where I just don't have any remorse for

her character and I don't see her as a decent

villain for Batman. Well, I think, in this, I'll

agree with you on that because from episode five,

probably throughout, like, you know, the later

season, she goes through so much character development.

Yeah, I mean even if you look at the recent Batman

video games Arkham Asylum in Arkham City like

holy cow It's not the same poison ivy. Oh, no.

Yeah, she's changed over the years since this

series As far as this episode, this is basically

your typical, you know woman scorned, you know

out for revenge story as far as You know, you

know the plants were destroyed and she wants

to revenge and the way she does that is through

this love oh no wait I'm confusing that with

a movie that shall not be named holy crap sorry

live -action animation combined yikes oh Uma

Thurman oh Uma Thurman oh that movie was horrible

that was a bad movie for some reason I loved

watching it when I was little but now I just

think it's kind of funny So what do you have

for Pretty Poison, Steve? Well, I like the episode

overall. I like the fact that they introduced

Poison Ivy in the episode. She's not a bad character,

but I have to agree with you, she's almost second

rate compared to... The rest of them? Yeah, the

rest of them, like your Two -Face, Joker, Riddler,

Penguin. They pretty much steal the show. Yeah,

I mean, in this series, the way I always saw

her was she's comedy relief. She's not as high

a comedy relief as, say, someone like Waspinator

in Beast Wars, but she is still... Like, there's

no feeling behind her to me. Well, there is.

You can go ahead. I don't know, it's just one

of those things where I just, okay, she's gonna

feed Batman to a Venus flytrap. Okay, that is

a threat to Batman, but I mean, that's not the

worst thing that's ever happened to him. That's

true. It's not the worst thing or worst bind

that he's ever been in, but I can kind of feel

her character in a sense. I don't see her as

comic relief. I just see her as, you know, she's

just been burned and she's not gonna take it

anymore. She's pissed. She's an eco terrorist

guys. Yeah, she's an eco terrorist Maybe she

should go hang out with Sly Sludge and Dr. Blight

No catch in planet references, please But yeah,

the episode overall wasn't that bad The whole

poison thing that I mean they reuse that in that

horrible bat film. Yeah, and the giant, you know,

plant and everything else. I think it's kind

of ironic that they make her kill her own plants.

Because she's trying to kill Batman and, you

know, Batman just ducks. Instead, she slices

her plant. Yeah, she slices her plant and causes

Batman to fall down and break the lights, which

fall in water and create a fire. Yeah, but she'll

be back And then you see her kind of in the almost

in the fetal position petting her her her flowers

like my precious They're her babies don't you

know that This is also the first appearance of

Renee Montoya the pull it one of the police officers

Yeah, so it's very cool and according to this

episode Her biography states her age at this

time as 28. That's quite strange. Why? Well,

just, they kind of make it appear like these

people are older than what they are. Well, I

would say that, I mean, as the series progresses,

we know that Dick Grayson is... You know he kind

of starts out being like junior senior in high

school and by the time like old wounds happens

He's graduating college with Batman it could

be anywhere from I'd say late I'd say early 30s

till some mid 40s throughout the entire series

so Don't know comparing her to dent. I mean dent

is significantly older than she is yeah dents

basically about the same age as Bruce Bruce.

Yeah I'll make I'll make a comparison here. This

is about a way later episode that I just watched

the Mad Hatter Even the Mad Hatter I mean was

he had a he isn't really in a lot of episodes,

but even his interest his Episode was a lot more

interesting than pretty poison. I'll give it

that Yeah. I mean, it's a nice introduction to

the character. They actually give her an introduction

rather than just, oh, she's just there type of

thing. Like many of the characters in the series?

Yeah. Overall, none of the Poison Ivy episodes

except the ones that it's her and Harley, none

of the ones when she's by herself are ones that

I can watch regularly. I have to agree with that.

Cause I noticed that too, that I don't like watching

episodes where it's just her. I need to see like

either her and Harley or the episode even where

there was her, Harley, and I think Livewire or

something? That crossover? Yeah, I think that's

what it was. It was one of those Superman -Batman

crossovers. Yeah, with Supergirl. Yeah, that

sounds about right. Yeah. With Supergirl, Batgirl,

and then Harley and - That was Girls Night Out.

Yeah, you're right. I'm even looking at my list

right now and all the ones that I like with the

female villains it's all either Harley and Poison

Ivy or You know like a crossover one because

I can't it's like I can't you can't just rely

just on Poison Ivy by herself That's cuz she

has the worst gimmick in the world when it comes

to supervillain Cuz she needs she needs Harley.

She needs Harley or she needs somebody else But,

yeah, I have to agree. I prefer her with Harley

or somebody else. I don't particularly care for

her, but I would still rate this higher than

I would the On Leather Wings. Oh, yeah. Well,

see, that's the thing. Poison Ivy is, you know,

a main top tier. bat villain even though we don't

think she stacks up very well next to two -faced

penguin joker she is a top -tier villain compared

to man bat which is just your everyday type of

nature yeah pretty much are you referring to

the villains who only appear once in the series

like have their own episode well they appear

like once or twice and then they just kind of

are you never see them again yeah all right like

mad hatter Well, Matt Hatter has a precedence,

not only here, but in comics as well. He shows

up in other areas of the DCAU, so he's not totally...

He's not a total throwaway character, and he's

a cool character. He is a cool shit. I like him.

I like his character. Yeah, Matt Hatter is awesome.

I thought it was a pretty good episode. We'll

get into that later, though. So, any other thoughts

on this episode? That's it, I think. I really,

I like it. It's good. It was a good introduction

with her and I guess I'll say it could have used

a little bit more, I guess. But overall, it's

pretty enjoyable. And with that, we'll be moving

on. I'm telling you, it was a leprechaun! Really,

man? You expect me to believe you saw a little

green man? Leprechauns and Batman. What's got

them coming to? Leprechauns? Leprechauns, Alfred?

Pardon? Not in the mood for Brahms, are we? You

think I'm crazy, don't you? In what sense, Master

Bruce? Seriously. You don't believe I saw Leprechaun.

Did he have a pot of gold? Sir, I believe you

saw something. Maybe I need a rest. Next up is

the Underdwellers. A series of crimes perpetrated

by Leprechauns starts plague in Gotham City.

However, as time goes on, Batman discovers that

the real perpetrators of the crimes are children

kept in the sewers and ruled by a king who forces

them to remain fully silent. Hmm. Can anybody

say Rat King? That was my first thought. Is he

the sewer king? Yeah. But my first thought was

to Rat King from the 87 TMNT cartoon. Oh man.

This episode really shows you how passionate

Bruce is about children as far as making sure

nothing happens to kids. You know and he probably

sees himself in some of these kids, I think oh

Yeah They're all kind of lost and you know they

only know what this this asshole has taught them

This to me is I don't know if Steve you might

have seen them Terry you might have seen it as

well Have you guys seen the more lock episodes

from the x -men animated series? That kind of

rings a bell a little bit With Kalisto and all

that the Morlocks are basically the same time.

I mean they're they're they're mutants Obviously

they're different than these kids, but it's basically

the same precedence where you have You know people

living underground that fear daylight Yeah, and

these kids in this episode they when they go

out into the daylight to rob for this the sewer

king They cover everything up the ring cloaks.

Yeah, yeah and even when I think Batman brings

one of the kids back to Not the bat. I don't

think it's a bat cave but back to his mansion

And Alfred tries to wake up one of the kids with

the light the kid literally like goes and crawls

into the bed Yeah, like like yeah, that was just

you know, awful Well, I mean Alfred didn't know

I know no notice to see the way the child reacted.

Oh, yeah, it touched you Yeah, he was almost

like gizmo. Yeah I find it very interesting how

writers and animators can convey real life situations

through animation because this is basically an

abuse story. And I love the way that they have

done this. That Batman is coming to the rescue

of these kids. It's not like the top, I wouldn't

say it's in my top 10 of BTIS episodes, but it

is still a very, very well -done episode. Oh,

definitely. Oh, yeah. You really feel for the

kids in this episode, just seeing the way the

sewer king treats them. Like, he doesn't feed

them, and he's just, he's a prick. I wanna, I

wanna, I wanna smack him. I'll be honest, I really

do. I think a lot of people wanted to smack him.

Well, he won't be the first to not. that uh...

we have in this episode that uh... you just wanna

bitch slap but uh... there's a lot of villains

in this series i wanna bitch slap yeah but the

other one will be coming up in another episode

i think coming up in the next one or two but

uh... but yeah that's just it's i didn't like

the the the freaking sewer king no i just Couldn't

stand the guy and he that whole scene down there.

It looked very 80s animation style Down in the

sewer as far as how the kids looked and how the

the sewer king was Yeah, no that looked very

80s to me that looked like something that could

have been taken right out of Ninja Turtles. Oh,

yeah Animators I Mean it's possible but hard

to say But I just I wanted to slap that guy upside

the head, but the the kids I mean I was glad

to at least see them get away by the end Mm -hmm

They reunited with their families Yeah, I will

say for the sewer king as much as I don't like

the guy Michael Pataki who voiced him What that

was an amazing voice for that character? Even

though I don't care for the character, his voice

was very well done for a villain voice. This

is the first episode in the series to show Batman's

passion for children, displayed when he expresses

his desire to kill the Surah King for his abusive

treatment of them. Another trivia fact is this

episode... is the smallest credited cast in the

entire DC animated universe, with only four names

listed. Wow. Wow. Interesting. Yeah, you got

Kevin Conroy, obviously, as Bruce in Batman,

and also he was uncredited as a cop. Ephraim

Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred, Victoria Carroll as

the matron, and Michael Pataki as the sewer king.

Yeah, that's crazy. You know never even thought

about that that there was nobody else speaking

Makes sense though. Do you think about it? The

first rule number one is no talking That's like

the first rule of Fight Club. You don't talk

about Fight Club But yeah, this this wasn't a

bad episode and it does you know, like you said

bring about Bruce and his his whole passion for

kids and everything else so that that is the

nice part about it which shows why he took in

each Robin that he's had and so on and so forth

and anytime he can give which he'll be giving

again very soon but but yes I I don't think that

this was a Ultimately like 100 % important episode,

but it was a good episode nonetheless It was

a good episode for showing a different side of

Batman and showing a different side of Bruce

I mean really you're seeing a softer side to

Batman here as far as him wanting to be able

to take care of these kids But at the same time

you're still seeing that side of him that wants

to lash out at those people who you know that

person that hurt the kids as well, so And, you

know, Batman has rules that he has to go by and

obviously he can't kill the guy even though he

wants to. To be honest, I have no qualms about

this episode. It was really well done. Oh yeah,

it was. Very much so. And with that, we'll be

moving on. When I'm done with you clowns, you

won't qualify as security guards. The department

works months to nail that drug lord. We lay out

two million in cash for the sting, and in five

stinkin' minutes you idiots blow it. Hey, I didn't

blow anything. Well, one of you did. Or maybe

what we've got here is three cops on the take.

That's uncalled for. What? You can't be serious.

Where does he get off? Hey, I'll tell you who's

to blame. Batman. You saw the Batman too? Come

on, Harvey. Batman's fault. Then whose fault

is it, officer? I don't know, but I'm sure it

wasn't Batman. He was... Either you start coming

up with some answers or hand over your badges.

Up next is POV. After a failed bust, Harvey Bullock,

Renee Montoya and a rookie, Wilkes, are put under

investigation. Each one of them offers up a story

on what really happened during their failure.

Of course, views seem to conflict and Bullock

is quick to blame Batman for the mistakes. Looks

always quick to blame Batman Batman. Yeah, he's

like arrest him Yeah, any chance he gets he's

like arrest him. Yep Like spider -man with them.

What's his name is? Yes. Oh, yeah Same thing.

Yeah, I I find this one like I really like this

one because it's it's kind of like you have it

like say you have a TV series that you know starts

out in the present day and You know, you know

TV shows do nowadays. They'll do a prologue scene

and then they'll do whatever Intro or whatever

whatever title card stuff they're gonna do for

their for their show and then they'll get to

the actual show But the actual show they're like

up 72 hours before You know and I like the fact

that each of these flashbacks is so different

And they still have some of the say you know

some of the same facts But obviously each one

of the cops is going to you know pimp themselves

as being the heroes Which Wilkes, I don't think

did I think he pretty much? Said Batman did everything

And of course Harvey Bullock is gonna. You know

say he did it all Overall, I really like this

one just because it has such a different tone

to it. And as I said, the different stories being

told at once, I really like that. How about you,

Steve? Well, I really like the fact that they

kind of had a weird conflicting story, kind of

showing how well they can maneuver around their

own writing skills. Oh, yeah as the different

characters It could be a little confusing but

at the same time it was kind of you know You

could kind of still tell Batman was the key to

the whole story mm -hmm being that bullet got

his ass kicked and You know just Wilkes pretty

much just says you know The the little bit about

hey, it was Batman. Yeah I think in this episode

with POV, in terms of the writing style, it really

takes a different turn compared to the episodes

we've seen up till now. And that's, I think,

what sets this episode apart from the other ones

from 1 till 7, just because, I mean, it really

makes the viewer pay attention to what's going

on, because you're seeing three different points

of view of the same story. So yeah, that's my

feel. It's been done in other things before but

again, it's it's it's done really well here I

Mean like you said Mike the the whole thing with

Bullock trying to blame Batman of course for

the whole thing like I had it all under control

blah blah blah I just I was glad to see that

By the end of it they all got off because Even

as annoying as Bullock is I like his character

Hackle was ten times more annoying than then

Bullock was oh Yes, he was I wanted to shoot

that guy Yes, I definitely agree with you yeah

You know, it's it's one of those things where

this one if it like I was saying off air that

I think I could have sworn This one won them

an award whether it was for writing whether it

was for animation. I'm not sure And I did try

to look it up and I couldn't find anything but

Wilkes's account pretty much illustrates how

effective Batman is at awning his more superstitious

enemies. This is reminiscent of detective Flass's

image of Batman and Batman year one Let's see.

When Batman is driving the forklift, the Danny

Elfman theme plays. Which, the Danny Elfman theme

up until the second season of this series is

pretty much... It's a take off of it, but apparently

in this episode they used the actual theme from

the movie. So I thought that was kind of cool

as well. I like the fact that... This whole episode

was told in a flashback Yeah, we haven't gotten

that so far up to now and I and I really do like

the way they did this Yep, yep Anyway anything

else anybody I Just just like I said it was it

was a different kind of writing style and it

was an interesting episode that really sets it

apart It's not one of my favorites, but it's

it's well done. I agree with those sentiments

exactly And with that, we'll be moving on. Your

help means a lot to us, Bruce. And what you do

means a lot to this city. I wish we could do

more. Lately, things haven't been going well.

Thanks. What do you mean? I can't prove it, but

I'm positive people are disappearing. Transients,

regulars, old faces I miss seeing. Then about

a month ago, a volunteer, Dan Riley, disappeared.

I'm telling you something's very wrong. You've

talked to the police? Of course, but the police

have their hands full, and homeless people disappearing

is not big news. This episode depicts Bruce Wayne

losing his memory and being turned into a slave.

When indigent men start disappearing from the

Bowery, Bruce goes undercover as lowlife Gaff

Morgan to investigate. He soon ends up as an

amnesia victim, forced to work with other kidnapped

men in a treacherous, remote mining camp. I love

this episode. I have to agree. This episode,

when I saw it back when I was younger, I didn't

particularly care for it. But going back and

watching it now, I have a greater appreciation

for it just because of what they did. The subtle

things that they did to Bruce to give him this

new fake persona and the music in it and just

the whole kind of you know western and and lost

and out in the middle of nowhere setting that

they gave it so it was primarily without batman

yeah exactly and what i love most about this

episode is the the the theme music that they

put to the mining camp i really love that and

i wish i wish that was i wish this episode had

music on on the soundtrack it doesn't um... but

uh... you know i again i love this episode specifically

because they're focusing on bruce rather than

just your average everyday batman you know goes

up against whomever and then you know the general

just a regular episode happens another thing

i love about this episode is the comedy between

alfred in the bat wing It's just so funny It

just is yeah, I like the fact that uh the The

whole thing of him trying to drive it and tell

it what to do And he's like land darn you and

then it's like your funeral Yeah, yeah If I made

this episode, I think this episode really touched

me personally Just because I feel like you really

get a sense of who Bruce Wayne is in this episode

And how he really does care about people who

are less fortunate than him especially like when

he when he loses his memory and he doesn't know

who he is and then at the end of the episode

when he remembers that he's Batman and He's Bruce

Wayne and he turns to the guys and he's like,

yeah, you know, I'm a millionaire But I'm not

gonna just be like forget about you guys. I'm

gonna help you and That I think really shows

his true character. He's a good guy He's not

stuck up and he cares about people Well, yeah,

I mean, you know the thing about Bruce Wayne

is even though his parents were taken away from

him at eight years old I Think his parents raised

him You know to not you know to not be a rich,

you know snobby little kid, you know you take

a Veronica Raelin Who is who is one of Bruce's

friends in this series? She's a rich stuck -up

snotty little bitch Oh a hundred percent. I agree

with that You know Bruce isn't like that because

Bruce has a greater sense and Bruce will always

if someone helps him out of a jam or if you know

Whatever else he will always you know turn you

know turn the favor around and you know give

him jobs or You know make a donation to this

or make a donation of that So, I mean, yeah this

speaks volumes for Bruce's character But again,

this is an episode where That guy Oh God that

guy just needed to just somebody's need to put

a gun to his head talking about fat bastard.

Oh my god that guy I also thought fat bastard

when I first saw him I kind of want to take that

drumstick and shove it up his ass, but that's

just me. I think it was funny that he's just

standing there and Batman throws him on the thing

to basically save him, but he gets carted away

anyway. I think it's funny that he's sitting

there stuffing his face the entire episode. Pretty

much. And everybody else is eating some kind

of green... Some kind of like toxic goo for their

lunches and he's sitting there eating freaking

chicken from like KFC KFC But but yeah It's another

one -shot villain like they've had the last few

episodes This one is 100 % forgettable of a villain

the episode is not 100 % forgettable. This one

is quite needed in the lineup of the animated

series. I think the whole way that they portrayed

this was great. Yeah, it was. It was very, very

well done. And it's funny as far as a couple

bits of trivia, the idea for this episode was

conceived when Bruce Tim and the writers wondered

what Bruce Wayne would do if he lost his memory

and was forced to find a solution without gadgets

or his costume. Also, Bruce Tim revealed in the

DVD commentary for this episode that one of the

main difficulties in using quote -unquote one

-shot villains is that since they only make one

appearance, it can be difficult to make them

memorable. Thus Biggis' trademark was to be fat

and revolting. In fact, according to Tim, George

Murdock, who portrayed Biggis, ate food as he

read his lines. It worked so well that the slurping

and gulping sounds he made were kept for the

character as part of the soundtrack. Very interesting.

That's an interesting voice acting method. That

is interesting. Gross, but interesting. Probably

the first time he'd be allowed to have food in

the voice recording room. They're probably like,

get the most disgusting thing you can think of.

McDonald's. Biggis's huge appetite, physique,

and slobbering voice are very reminiscent of

Mr. Creosote from Monty Python and The Meaning

of Life. Let's see the last one is this is the

first episode to feature Alfred away from Wayne

Manor And as I said before that's one of my main

reasons between the music cue that they constantly

use as the theme for this episode and Alfred,

you know having the comical Adventure with the

Batwing. That's one of the reasons besides the

whole characterization of Bruce That's two of

the main reasons why I absolutely love this episode

I love the whole dialogue between Alfred and

the Batwing, where Alfred's like, this must be

the place, bring us down. Negative. But Master

Bruce is down here, we have to land. Impossible.

Area two confined. That was hilarious. Land,

you bucket of bolts. Your funeral. Aw, Alfred.

And then when he gets out, the Batwing's like,

watch your step. And then he's like, aye, aye.

Claim this land for Spain, and then he falls.

It was just such a funny episode. Not really

a funny episode, but those moments with Alfred

were really funny. And it was such a nice insight

to what, as I said with the trivia, as to what

Bruce would have done if he didn't have his memory.

Overall, I really liked it. I really love it.

I love watching this is an episode that I can

watch just to watch it No matter what when I

watch it. I Could agree now This is one of my

favorite episodes and I would watch it like more

than once and just the story is just very captivating

and the writing style is spot -on and Characters

are spot -on and like I said Bruce Wayne really

comes in his character really comes out here

And I personally wouldn't put it in my top 10,

but I'd put it in my top 20 for sure out of this

whole series Oh, it's definitely in my top 10.

I have other episodes that I like more than this

one Although that should remain to be seen As

this goes on because I can't quite remember all

of the episodes. Yeah but And you gotta remember,

there's one last great line between the boss

and Batman. Where he says, stop, we'll be killed.

Stop, and we will be. And then he says, don't

let me drown. When you taste the prison food,

you'll wish I had. That was an awesome line.

Yes, it was. So, with that, we'll be moving on.

What just happened was an isolated incident.

There are just a few rotten apples giving an

otherwise peaceful community a bad name. Do you

include Batman in those rotten apples, Mayor?

Absolutely. He and criminals like the Joker are

cut from the same cloth. What? Compare me to

Batman? I got more style, more brains. I'm certainly

a better dresser. Furthermore, I intend to run

every one of these costume freaks out of town.

and make all of Gotham City as safe as my own

mansion. Well, really. And finally today is be

a clown Mayor Hill is giving a speech at a construction

site saying the new block of apartments being

built will herald a new safer Gotham City and

Of course the speech is rudely interrupted by

a pair of criminals all the while the Joker is

watching From his television and his hideout

and is outraged at this comparison He gets an

idea for revenge from Hill's next statement promising

to make the city as safe as his own mansion.

Yeah, I love the Joker, but this is such a throwaway

episode. Yes and no. Just not his best, his best

episode. No, I don't think so. It's like the

Joker himself is great in anything he does, but.

Just the whole premise, it's really the premise

of this that I don't like. It's not so much as

what the Joker is doing, it's just the whole

story. It's just meh. The whole him going to

Mary Hill's son's birthday party and basically

causing a ruckus. I would call this one probably

on par with the Christmas with the Joker episode.

Yeah. Not, you know, it's again another like...

Festive time being that it's his birthday when

really it's just a big party for Mayor Hill Which

is why Jordan gets pissed off and runs off to

find Jekyll the clown. I mean the Joker Because

they find the real Jekyll tied up and figure

out that it's the Joker like and You know, I

love the fact that Bruce sees this exploding

candle on top of this cake and trips and knocks

the cake into the water, which explodes. He's

like, oh, I'm just clumsy. Smooth move. Yeah.

You know, and again, that is a testament to the

character of Bruce Wayne that if he can't, you

know, if he... As much as people will hate me

making this reference, if he can't run to a phone

booth and change over, you know... He'll figure

out another way without it. Exactly. He will

figure out another way around it, or he will,

you know... In certain films later on, he will

straight up act out as Batman without the costume,

but I mean, here... You know in situations like

this. I like that he can you know you know sneakily

go by and do stuff like that To you know save

people from exploding candles Christian Bale

has got nothing on this Batman Christian Bale

sucks compared to this Batman Yeah, his voice

sucks compared to a lot of Batman It sounds forced,

doesn't even sound natural. He still beats Dedric

Bader. Oh yeah. Anybody beats Oswald from Drew

Carey. If we ever get an interview with Kevin

Conroy, we so need to have him say, you're listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network, I'm Batman and

I don't wear hockey pants. That would be awesome.

I love the whole scene in here where Batman gets

in a fight with The Joker yeah, and gets knocked

out by the gas card Yeah, and the Joker Uses

the fortune -telling machine which drops out

a card predicting Batman's fate and the Joker

goes you're gonna love this And then when Batman

wakes up he's upside down in a tank rapidly filling

with water. Oh That scene. Oh, I remember that

Yep, I remember that now. And then, of course,

Jordan tries to free him, creating a crack, which,

of course, Batman knows, yeah, the right pressure,

I'll break. But the best part I'd have to say

about this episode is while they're on the roller

coaster, and the Joker's throwing his baby doll

exploding grenades. The grenades? Yes. Yes, and

it's very funny the rollercoaster sequence was

adapted into the third stage of the Joker level

in the Super Nintendo game the adventures of

Batman and Robin interesting That is a difficult

ass level I Remember that game enough to remember

that part. Yeah, it looked difficult in the animation

Jekko's comment that the great prosciutto was

a ham refers to the fact that prosciutto is actual

Italian word for ham Talk about irony. Oh Yeah,

I know I know Steve knew this but I don't know

if Terry you knew this originally Tim Curry was

supposed to be the Joker. Yeah, I knew that That

just would not have gone over well for the joke.

It wouldn't fit the character. I don't even know

who he could have played in this series. I mean,

you could probably get him as like a maniacal

businessman or maybe even like a maniacal cardinal

from a church facing some musketeers or something

like that, but I mean, Tim Curry has an excellent

voice. Tim Curry is an amazing, amazing villain,

but he just wouldn't have fit the Joker. for

what the Joker does of this series. Mark Hamill

created a piece of gold that is relatively untouched

by any other voice actor since Yeah, I mean there

have been a few times that there have been really

decent really great Joker voices outside of Hamill

like recently John DiMaggio did excellent in

Batman Under the red hood. Yeah, he I think he's

hit the closest and then I'd say next I'd have

to say Kevin Michael Richardson Yeah from the

Batman. Yes, but honestly nobody else has done

it as good as Mark Hamill and nobody ever will

and and even though Mark Hamill has has you know

gone on record saying he He is retiring as the

Joker I saw a tweet from him over the weekend.

I saw it too If they ever adapted the killing

joke into a DC Universe animated original movie,

he would come back for that. That'd be awesome.

I wish they'd make this happen. Yes, that would

be so freaking awesome. We gotta have at least

one more good run with Mark Hamill. I don't think

he's done yet, guys. I really don't. No. You

know, it's the same thing with anybody. I mean,

unless you're like... in your 90s and you're

in really, really bad health or something like

that, you throw enough money at someone or if

you put a really great project in front of someone,

they will do it. Well, it's like Michael Ansara

who did the original Mr. Freeze in this series.

He didn't want to come back for the video games

just because he's so old and he's kind of just

done. We want to hear something interesting.

in terms of people like older actors and stuff

and voice actors. At the Scream Awards a couple

weeks ago, they had the original voice of Tweety

Bird and Granny. She's in her 90s and she's still

doing voice acting. Yeah, she's still doing it.

So I mean, age is not a factor anymore. It's

just whenever they're ready to step down. What

I mean by the... the comparison that I made was

that like You know if if he if Hamill wants to

retire because he wants to do other things or

if he just wants to put it to rest and let somebody

else take the reins and Him, you know him coming

back for a project. He'll really love or if they

throw enough money at him I mean, it's you know,

it's not really a matter of age, but it's you

know, it's a matter of hey look, you know As

much as I love doing this I need to do other

stuff as well. That's true I understand where

you're coming from it's the same thing and I

hate to do this comparison, but You know Michael

Bay needs to make his own films. He needs to

stop playing with the giant robots Why did I

feel like that was gonna come up sooner or later

But anyways back to this episode yes be a clown

it was a good episode I just Don't really care

for hill or his kid. That's that's really my

only qualms with this episode is I don't care

for the the hill family at all his characters

all his son's characters that ultimately throw

away mayor hill comes into play and The hard

act episodes as well as the ones with the clock

King yes, so that's pretty much the only one

there with mayor Well, I will say one other thing

about this episode is that, apparently, Bruce

Timm is claiming that his idea for this episode

when he had the image in his mind of Batman trying

to save a child, but the child's too scared because

of Batman's intimidating look, this would later

be revisited in Batman Beyond, the episode Unmasked.

The kid looks almost the same. Yeah, the kid

looks almost the same, and also in Batman Beyond,

Mayor Hill went on to own a high school with

Hamilton Hill High School. I didn't catch that,

but yeah. Technical difficulties. Let's move

on, shall we? Well, that's interesting I didn't

know that part On another side note was the little

clown is a reference to the laugh He would have

used had he remained cast as the Joker The laugh

also being too scary was what made the writers

persuade curry to drop out in favor of Mark Hamill

I do like quite a few of the lines in this episode.

Oh, yeah, they're awesome Is very it's very quirky.

I'll give it that It's probably not one of my

more memorable episodes for me, but I do think

it's funny in some instances. I like the Joker

where he goes, What? Compare me to Batman. I've

got more style, more brains, and I'm certainly

a better dresser. That's so true. And then where

the kid is like, what is it? It's a birthday

candle, Einstein. Except this one blows you out.

Yeah. There are some really really great Joker

lines in this episode or like or like when Jordan

says something about Batman getting free and

Joker says they don't make straight jackets like

they used to and I should know Reference to Arkham

Asylum, eh? Yeah Well, it's a reference to the

prison. It's not really a reference to the game

No, I mean like Arkham Asylum is where they like

the prison, right? Yeah, that's why I mean not

the game obviously. Yeah But yeah, the Batman

does subtly make jokes against the Joker without

cracking a smile Yeah, Batman has a lot of dry

humor Well, like the Joker says this is must

must have been his stop and then the Batman's

like on the contrary Joker This is where you

get off Yeah, and then he says he always knew

how to make an exit But see the thing about those

jokes is Joker never hears them No, so he doesn't

actually think Batman's got a personality. Right,

exactly. Whereas when we'll get much later in

this podcast when we get to Return of the Joker

and Terry's like, oh yeah, Batman never talked

to you, did he? You know, so. Batman more so

said everything under his breath. Yep. Pretty

much. So, yeah, that is quite interesting to

say the least. Yeah. Any other thoughts? I think

that's it. That's it for me. Just okay episode,

I think special. Overall I liked it. It's another

Joker episode, so of course I'm gonna be on the

bandwagon for this one. With that, we'll be back

Welcome back, and so overall, what did you guys

think of all the episodes we reviewed today?

Well the first thing I'm gonna say is I meant

to say this in the intro and I know people are

gonna probably not wait until now for me to hear

it for me to say it but um this is pretty much

a original TFG one episode because we reviewed

five episodes today we haven't done that in years

that'd be true um no I I like them overall I

think my two least favorite are pretty poison

and be a clown simply for be a clown as I said

in the be a clown review simply for the characters

of Hill and his kid I don't like either one of

them the Joker stuff was great I love POV for

the differences you know the different flashbacks

and the different stories and the forgotten is

just great I would have to say Pretty Poison

was okay. The Underdwellers was kinda meh to

me, despite the fact it did show a personality

trait. POV, it was an interesting take to say

the least. It's not one of my absolute favorites,

but it was still good nonetheless. The Forgotten

was a great episode. Very well thought out. And

Be a Clown is not one of the highest of the Joker's

episodes, but I would still put it somewhere.

It would be above Christmas with the Joker, that's

for sure, and above quite many other of the primary

villains of the Bat Gallery. With me, Pretty

Poison, it kind of fell flat after I saw later

episodes with Poison Ivy and Harley, like we

discussed earlier on in this podcast, because

there's not really a lot. She can't really hold

her own. But overall, it was a pretty good episode

with her. The Underdwellers, I really enjoyed

it. It really was well -written, had a great

storyline. Sura King, really great villain, and

getting to see more of Batman's character really

coming through. POV had a lot going on for it,

so it was a different episode compared to the

rest of the episodes that we discussed in this

podcast. But overall, again, it was very well

written, very well thought out, and I did enjoy

watching it and learning about it. And episode

eight, The Forgotten, again, really, really well

written episode. and very heartwarming and getting

to see more of Bruce Wayne without him in his

Batman attire. And it was just really interesting

to see what would happen if Bruce Wayne lost

his memory and got stuck without all his gear.

And finally, in Be a Clown, I am a huge fan of

the Joker, but this felt a little flat for me,

just a little bit, just because I felt like it

could have used a little bit more. But it was

a pretty good episode and it made me laugh so

I don't really have anything too bad to say about

it and that's all for me. Which is just as important

as commenting on the website. And speaking of

which, we have our first iTunes review. Yay!

Yay! It is from Godspeed. He puts on there a

five -star review, thank you very much. Says

a good listen for bat fans. These guys know what

they're doing. Sound quality and production are

Godspeed has been a long time fan and we appreciate
