Beverly Hills Cop I & II Soundtracks Review

About this Episode
Hello folks, TF2 and Mike here, and right before
we start the La La Land Lounge here on GeekCast
Radio, gotta say, in this episode, I say it's
episode six, but it's actually episode seven,
because episode six was our BTAS volume one,
25 years of BTAS celebration, so this is episode
seven of La La Land Lounge. At the end of the
podcast, I say something about Legends of Tomorrow
season one and Arrow season four being the next
episode. It will be the next episode, but that'll
be episode eight, so... Beverly Hills cop 1 &
2 this podcast is episode 7 of the lawland lounge
next time episode 8 sorry folks I Don't know
I was out of it the other night when we recorded
this but anyway now on to the axle F theme This
is Matt Rebois from La La Land Records and you've
entered the La La Land Lounge on GeekCast Radio,
where soundtracks live. Hello and welcome to
the La La Land Lounge here on GeekCast Radio.
This is episode 6 for the La La Land Lounge and
we are celebrating, um, 31 years of Beverly Hills
Gop? Beverly Hills, well I tell you, 31 years
of Beverly Hills Cop 2. Beverly Hills Cop is
33 years old at this point. I am of course TfU
and Mike here inside the La La Land Lounge. Joining
me is Steve Megatron Phillips. Hello sir, how
are you? Yo. Yo. We are back cause we gotta talk
some axles. So La La Land Records last year...
Yeah, it was last year. Released Beverly Hills
Cop 1 and 2. Two single disc sets, I believe.
Yeah, two single disc sets. For, you know, like
I said, the 30th anniversary of the second movie
is this year, so... in conjunction with Paramount
Pictures and Universal Music and all that good
stuff. The world premiere official release of
Renown composer Harold Fultemider's original
motion picture score to the legendary 1984 Paramount
Pictures Action Comedy Beverly Hills Cop starring
Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton.
Directed by Martin Brest, composer Faltermeyer
defined the 80s film score pop synth sound and
Beverly Hills Cop is arguably his most iconic
work, certainly his most influential, as his
infectious themes and compositions have continued
to inspire throughout the decades into the present
day. The original film score makes its world
premiere with this deluxe presentation which
also includes bonus tracks and the original soundtrack
releases most notable songs. Featuring the sizzling
The Heat is On performed by the late Glenn Fry
written by Falter Mayer and Keith Forsey, the
hold -on for Dear Life track, Truck Chase Neutron
Dance performed by the Poynter Sisters, and more.
Produced for Lawline Records by Dan Goldwasser
and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this limited edition
release of 3 ,000 units includes exclusive in
-depth liner notes by writer Tim Grieving with
new interview quotes from Falter Mayer and Rodeo
Drive, and... A Rodeo Drive kind of classy art
design by Goldwasser, a must for all film music
fans. It'll sound great blaring in your car,
even if there's a banana in your tailpipe. Somebody's
actually done that to me before. He's gonna put
that in the tailpipe. Yeah, they put that in
my tailpipe when I worked at the pizza joint.
Well, you do live in - And they shot that. My
truck shot it back out. Yeah, well, you do live
in Michigan, dude, so, you know. They thought
it was funny. I didn't. I'm sure you didn't at
the time, but you've got to kind of chuckle at
it now. No, I don't chuckle at it. The only part
I chuckle at is the fact that this particular
manager that did this also deflated my tires
the same night because it was a joke and I parked
his car on the block the next week. Geez. Oh
lord. That's funny. Alright, so Beverly Hills
Cop, the first film. It's got 29 tracks, total
album time of 63 minutes and 10 seconds. What
were your opinions going back and listen... Now
did you go back and watch the movie before you
listened to this or did you just listen to this?
I didn't go back and watch it. Okay. I didn't
either, because I know both of these movies by
heart. I know the first one better than the second
one, and I know the third one better than the
second one. See, I'm the opposite. I know the
second one better than the first one, and I know
the second one. I know the third one alright,
but the third one's kind of a 90s cheese thing
for me. They changed the one cop too. Yeah, yeah
they did. Taggart was off in retirement in Arizona
or something or other But Beverly Hills cop 1984
When going back and listening to this I Found
myself even though I didn't watch the rewatch
the movie for this recording because we just
did an MWIRE episode on it last year episode
125 Which I will link in the show notes Did find
myself having to go on YouTube and find clips
of this just I mean I know the films on Netflix
And I know it's other places that I could watch
the whole thing, but I didn't want to watch the
whole thing but some some of the music I Really
did not remember obviously when it comes to the
songs on on the first film We all know you know
The heat is on it's the main theme neutron dance
is you know when they're doing the truck chase
I forget where Patti LaBelle's new attitude comes
in on on the film, but I Love this one, but I
don't love it as much as the second one. I It's
one of those things where the second movie As
I said before in many of the G -Seren shows when
I was a kid my mom let me watch almost anything
if she'll let me watch Freddy Krueger She'll
let me watch Axel Foley, you know And it's one
of those things where 1988 and 1989 whenever
it was whenever this first came out on VHS or
whenever it first hit TV and we recorded it and
now the TV version obviously is bleeped and all
that stuff, but I Remember watching the second
one more than the first one I knew of the first
one, I had seen the first one, but it was one
of those instances where I had seen the second
one a hell of a lot more times than the first
one. Do you have a favorite instrumental track
and then a favorite song off of the first film
score? Well, one, I like the signature Axl Foley.
Everybody loves the Axl F theme, folks. It's
kind of hard not to. I don't know, that's probably
my favorite one. Just because it's that synth
sound to it, which kind of reminds me of Transformers
the movie. And whenever they show Axel in the
movie, this music comes up. So in that regard,
I think that... And it's nothing against the
soundtrack, but it's against the film itself.
They made each track almost has this exact same
riff in it. Well, he uses it throughout the tracks
because, again, I've said this before, you have
to work in the hero theme every time the hero,
every time Eddie Murphy pops up. His theme music
has to play no matter what he's doing even anytime.
He's in it. It's anytime. He's doing something
sneaky Mm -hmm. Oh, yeah Absolutely, that's that's
a sneaky thing. Mm -hmm. And so like when you
see that In the movie and you hear it coming
you hear that You know that he's gonna do something
that's kind of Questionable. Yeah, he didn't
you know But that's my favorite part. But then,
I think the only thing that got a little grating
listening to the soundtrack though was that I
heard it repetitively, but I realized that without
the visuals to go along with it, you're focused
solely on the music. But no, I mean, throughout
the tracks though, I did enjoy them. Trying to
figure out which the other one was that I really
liked. Go on and talk about your thoughts on
it all. The interesting thing about this is,
you're right, he does use the Axel F theme, but
he, Faltermeyer doesn't change it, but he modifies
it. He won't modify, change, same damn thing,
but it's one of those things where a slight note
change, or a slight tone change, or a different
synth type sound. It sometimes gets in lower
sometimes comes in softer sometimes comes in
louder Like you're saying when it's mixed in
with the other music again, it's one of those
things where Like take track 14 good guys on
the grounds that track is part of the scene when
they go to Maitland's house, okay, and You got
Billy and you got got rosewood and you got taggart
and and they're you know doing their thing and
axel starts doing his thing well once axel starts
doing his thing the axel f theme has to come
up within that track because again your your
heroic anthem has to show when your hero is there
uh for an actual song for me i like neutron dance
but And I like The Heat Is On, but I've just
gotten so... I've heard The Heat Is On so many
times. Well, they was on commercials a lot, too.
But it's not even that. Every time you watch
an 80s movie, it's pretty much in there. The
one thing that I will say about some of these
tracks is it reminds me of... Because they had
some... I want to say they had some of this in
one of the old Ninja Turtle movies. Like this
type of synth, but... It also reminds me of Donkey
Kong Country Like especially the The Rosewood
there are the good guys on the ground yeah, it
reminds me of like some levels in Donkey Kong
Country. I'm like oh It's fun. Yep, absolutely
Like I said, I enjoy the first film score, but
I really enjoy the second film score a little
bit more. If you were going to rate Beverly Hills
Cop the original motion picture score or motion
picture soundtrack from while on record zero
to five, what would you give it? I'd give it
a four. Yeah, I'd give it a four as well. Like
I said, I very much do enjoy it. but 2 is more
memorable for me. It's more diverse. Oh yeah,
absolutely. So we're gonna take a quick break,
give you guys a sampling of Beverly Hills Cop
2, and then we'll be back with thoughts on that
soundtrack. Alright folks, we are back and we're
going to talk about part two, Beverly Hills Cop
II, the single disc soundtrack here. LawnLine
Records, Paramount Pictures, and Universal Music
Special Markets presents the world premiere official
release of acclaimed composer Harold Fultemeier's
original motion picture score to 1987's smash
hit sequel, Beverly Hills Cop II, starring Eddie
Murphy, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton, directed
by Tony Scott. Building upon its sensational
1984 Beverly Hills Cups score, composer Falter
Meier develops his action -comedy synthscape
in exciting directions, melding his iconic Axel
Foley themes amongst new, propulsive motifs and
melodies, all the while boosting the film's slick
visual action -packed approach taken by director
Tony Scott. The original film score makes its
world premiere with this deluxe presentation
which also includes the bonus tracks and the
original soundtrack releases most notable songs
featuring the hard -driving shakedown performed
by Bob Seeger written by Faltemeier Seeger and
Keith Forsey the strip -pole hug and I want your
sex does anybody remember club 385 north I actually
posted that on Twitter like right before we did
this I'm like does anybody remember the who remembers
club 385 north and the song that played there.
And may you rest in peace, George Michael. And
more. Also here, the rare Faltermire track, Bad
Guys, which expertly repurposes the film's villain
theme as a song with vocals by Keith Forsey.
Produced by For La Land Records by Dan Golosser
and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this limited edition
release of 3 ,000 units includes exclusive in
-depth liner notes written by writer Tim Grieving
with new interview quotes from falter meyer and
stylish art design by goldwasser now this one
is one i will listen to on repeat this has thirty
six tracks total album time of seventy nine minutes
twenty four seconds uh... as i said before it's
got bad guys shakedown it's got i want your sex
it's got be there by the planter senate sisters
it's got uh... all revved up by germaine jackson
It's got Better Way by James Ingram. Now, Better
Way was the song at the very end of the movie
when Axel's like, this is my uncle's house, trust
me. You know, and he drives off and he kind of
looks back and then, you know, and then Better
Way kind of plays in, kind of pulls in. So on
this one, honestly, I love all the tracks. I
can't even pick one, just everything about this.
If I really have to pick, I'm going to pick three.
Adrianos, Bogomil, Oilwell, Jog. Bogomil gets
shot. So those are tracks one and two. And then
the other one would be track 20, City Deposit.
Because City Deposit is the scene where there's
a robbery inside. I need authorization. Bam,
bam, bam. Authorized. This is when they shoot
the alarm out to catch the The the alphabet bandits
at the city, but I just I love that music I love
that scene and it's just so freaking cool. What
about you? Minor warehouse because that's part
of the thing from the first movie Axel calls
Jeffrey just because it's weird Oilfield shootout
just because it's a different tone and then the
CD deposit. The interesting thing about Track
25, oil field shootout slash kill Denton Carla,
I've said this before in certain things. When
we're watching a movie or a television show and
there's a sound effect, like I've talked about
this before when we've talked about The Flash.
His whooshing his his speed sounds, okay I was
not expecting them to be on the score by Blake
Neely like actually in the music that's the same
thing with the oilfield shootout and slash kill
Denton Carla because Kill Denton Carla has the
music slowed down. It's got the doves flying
It's got the birds all over the place and then
after debt gets killed Taggart comes in and shoots
Carla because I remember this I know the movie
like the back of my hand but I remember this
like the music almost stops when you hear the
bang of the gun and at the end he's like Women,
huh? You know and I just What I love about track
25 here on this release is They work all that
into the music without you needing to hear the
gunshot. Like the fan whooshing or whatever sound
at the very end of that... Oh god, I just absolutely
love it. I have been dying for a legit, legal,
downloadable, whatever you want to call it, copy,
like able to purchase copy of Bob Seger's Shakedown.
If... Anybody doesn't know this song if you've
never seen this movie There's something wrong
with you number one number two if you don't know
this song almost by heart You know you don't
even have to be a Bob Seeger fan to know this
song But this song was so epic that you know
just like the heat is on is the main theme song
for the first film This is in my mind shakedown
is the main theme actual licensed song for this
movie uh... mike dodd over this week in geek
uh... which i will actually be posting this both
on gcr and this week in geek but mike dodd uh...
had found shakedown for me through other means
number of years ago so the statute of limitations
at this point has run out on that uh... and this
is back before i was editing somebody decided
to play a practical joke on me and slow the song
down to where you almost can't recognize it.
You asshat. Who did it? You did it, you dumbass.
What did I do? You took Shakedown and you...
Remember the original TFG -1 Beverly Hills Cop
thing that I lost my audio? Yeah, that was like
eight years ago. Yeah, I know. Well, you took
the... The Shakedown song, and you slowed it
down to the point where you could barely recognize
it. I didn't do it on purpose. Yeah, sure you
didn't. No, I didn't. Audacity, what I was using
at the time, it crapped the bed on all of the
recordings, whenever it imported something in.
Yeah, you can believe what you want, but that's
what happened. That's why I quit using Audacity.
Yeah, I only use Audacity now to actually grab
audio. I don't use it to edit anymore. Alright,
out of the score tracks. Oh, we already mentioned
that. Out of the actual songs, what is your favorite
actual song that's on here? Shakedown. Yep. Absolutely.
I mean, I love Bad Guys. I think Bad Guys is
a perfect, you know, intro and villain theme
kind of thing. I do like All Revved Up. I do
like Better Way. I had already heard I Want Your
Sex by George Michael plenty of times. My mom
was a huge George Michael fan back then. So,
but yeah, Shakedown is most definitely it for
me as well. How often do you think you will go
back and listen to these scores? I think I'd
listen to a medley of my favorite ones between
the two. So in other words, I'd cut out a lot
of the repetitive sounding ones from the first
one and mix the ones that don't have as much
of it with a lot of what's in this and then I
think I'd have a best of album. Absolutely, absolutely
for me I can listen to the second one all day
long It's just just the way it is. I can listen
to that stuff all damn day long So yeah, that's
what's uh, that's that's the Beverly Hills cop
one and two reviews What are we gonna give Beverly
Hills cop to zero to five? Probably get a four
point five. I gotta give it a five I gotta. It's
just so, so awesome. Absolutely love it. So coming
up next on the La La Lounge, we're gonna go back
to DC. I think it's gonna be a little bit different
of an episode because one person has seen...
all the seasons of one of the shows and the other
person has not. So I'm going to split the episode
up. Next time around in episode seven of the
La La Land Lounge we're going to be doing DC's
Legend of Tomorrow's season one score and Arrow's
season four score. So hopefully you'll be on
the DC side with Legends. Oh yeah. Actually,
no, I need to reverse that. I mean you can be
on both. It doesn't matter I'm gonna have Doug
come on with us for legends and Doug and his
wife have not yet gone through all of arrows
So it's just gonna be you and I talking season
four score for arrow So that's what's coming
up on La La Lounge next time around and then
after that I'm trying to think if this episode
goes up to This week or next week. Yeah, so this
episode is gonna go up Tuesday the 21st Hopefully
legends and arrow legend season 1 arrow season
4 will go up to 28th and then a special Monday
release celebrating 30 years of Lethal Weapon
Because all and records released an eight disc
set for all four Lethal Weapon movies so March
6 2017 is the 30th anniversary of when the lethal
weapon movie get released way back when in 1987
so there's that that's what's coming up here
in the lawn lounge Anything you want to pimp
out before we get out of here? No All right Be
sure to go over to lawlandrecords .com where
soundtracks live everybody. They just released
their Cliffhanger 2 CD set. They just released
a score for Justice League Dark. They've got
a bunch of stuff coming up this year, no clue
what some of it is, but stay tuned to us, stay
tuned to their website, and we will catch you
later. you
