Harrow County Volume 2 Review

Comic Concierge episode as we continue our look

at Harrow County Volume 2. Joining me again as

with Volume 1 is Matthew Stewart from the Simplistic

Reviews Podcast. Thanks again for joining me,

man. Of course. Thanks for having me back on

to continue the Harrow County saga. It's interesting.

Yeah, yeah. And I think we'll definitely get

to that. So, yeah, we talked about volume one.

We also got into Matt's background of comics.

What is introductory level of comics was back

in the 90s and a big image. You can go back to

the episode and get into that. But this episode,

we're going to be talking about the second volume.

So. Spoiler warning if you've not read it, especially

if you've not read the first volume, of course

We'll be talking about you know things that have

kind of taken place in that so Highly advise

if you've not read the book to go back and read

it and won't read it because it's pretty good

It's kind of why we're talking about it, but

I guess we can start there reading the first

volume we had many positive things to say and

it left off at somewhat of a cliffhanger or at

least with the question We weren't really sure

where exactly was leaving. We get that answer

with this volume So, overall, did your enjoyment

with this comic increase? Did it decrease? Is

it about the same for you, looking at Volume

2? It's kind of interesting because I do like

the fact that with Volume 1, you do get that

kind of, oh, who is that character at the very

end? And of course, you find out in Volume 2

who exactly this character is. My overall impression

of it is that I feel come the end of Volume 2,

we're done with this story arc. Um, I'm not sure

how the other issues or volumes will continue

after that, but I mean, it wraps up really nice.

I don't think I enjoyed volume two as much as

I enjoyed volume one, mainly because it was a

lot of buildup, a lot of that. really interesting

exposition about finding out who these characters

are, especially the main protagonist. Here you

finally find pretty much the main antagonist,

at least for this story arc. Whether that antagonist

will come back or not is another thing altogether,

but overall I'm still enjoying it. I'm glad that

volume 2 wraps up really nice and tidy, but there

aren't as many kind of... what do you call, revelations

as I got in the first volume. So I guess for

that I'm a little slightly disappointed, but

it's fine. And also, I don't know if you noticed

this, Dan, when you're maybe rereading it, is

I think the art style was a lot more crisp on

this one. I feel like the first volume, maybe

the artists and the inkers and everybody was

kind of finding their way through the art style.

But in this one, I felt like the art was a lot

more crisp. The lines were a lot sharper. Um,

maybe it was the fact that I was reading on a

different, uh, kind of, I was reading on like

E calibre. Uh, so maybe everything is a little

sharper and the images are low HD, but I did

find that the art to me, to me was a little crisper

and a little more, uh, sharp. So, I mean, I don't

know if you got that impression as well. I definitely

got thinking at a little bit more well -defined,

especially with some of the creature designs.

Um, there's that like one creature that looks

like i don't even know what to describe him as

it's like a giant ox with a bunch of eyes that

i felt like he was a little bit oh yeah the one

that's always like hanging out and yeah yeah

Yeah, so I kind of agree with that and especially

the fact that they're dealing with two characters

that look exactly alike and I thought it handled

that pretty well. So even when I'm looking at

the page, without the context clues, I can still

kind of understand who's who for the most part,

just really through their facial expressions.

I think you certainly could dictate the differences

between those two characters. And it's interesting

you mentioned there's not as big as revelations

within this. And I mean, really there's one there's

one key one we finding out that she, she has

a sister and what exactly that means and, and

what, where does that lie? And, um, the other

piece that you talked about is how it all wrapped

up. And that was actually kind of a conservative

mind going, knowing this was, uh, uh, reading

this and, you know, about it's around where the,

you know, issue seven is or so. And when she's

like building up her army or whatever you would

call it, I felt like I'm like, can this all wrap?

Is there going to be a situation where the second

volume is, it actually feels like a completed

arc? Because it felt like that was one that,

you know, they could prolong that for a few more

issues, but then it all kind of, you know, ended

up coming to a head with that, you know, with

issue number eight or the last piece of the story.

And it didn't necessarily feel rushed, but it

didn't, you know, like I said, it just felt like

there could have been more there. Like it really,

as I say, it escalated very quickly near the

end. based upon the overall slower burn of the

of the style so far that they might prolong the

mystery and gradually we find out that her sister

is not who she seems to be or doesn't her tent

seems to be a little bit a little bit more notorious

than she is letting on but i think by the i don't

know how you felt regarding that regarding the

overall progression of the story near the end

Yeah, I like the fact that she and it's what

I liked her walking through the town as well,

too And everybody was mistaking her for her sister,

too So I mean it was pretty much a good twin

versus the evil twin the entire time and it goes

back to It is a kind of a question I have for

you about your opinion on this when you have

the flashbacks in the first volume and it has

the town people and they're digging basically

like two girls out of the tree because that's

basically because no spoiler the witch is their

mother essentially, so With the witcher they

hung and burned and became one with the tree

and everything They're digging these two like

children out of the tree and there's one alive,

but there also seems to be one dead I don't know

if that had anything to do with anything where

she was the dead twin perhaps and the live twin

was Given to the town folk and everything. So

as another thing that I don't know. Maybe I'm

reading too much into it for some reason, but

that always kind of gave me like a question like

okay was this the other uh body that was in the

jury when they dug her out or is this it's a

completely different thing that i'm thinking

of i i think it's certainly related i mean it

does at this point we we don't know but it seems

like there's a lot of stuff within her story

that we aren't really aware of all we really

know about her is within the story here. Like

we get no backstory or flashback. So I could

certainly see that, you know, and there's some

hints that there's more things there. Like she

has her chauffeur, Butler, who trying to determine,

you know, what is his role in all this? Is he

another creation of hers? Is, is he independent?

Is he, you know, somehow the father or not? I

mean, like where, where does he play along and

why does she exist? But I did kind of feel like

she did tie back to that. And, and they mentioned

it within, you know, you know, the interaction

with the two daughters or the two sisters, like

how Emma had a family, had people caring about

her and how she didn't. And I don't know if it

was trying to get into something about nature

versus nurture and how, you know, you had two

people with the same kind of power set or, you

know, the same really lineage and the differences

that it led to based upon like how they were

grown, you know, one in the county with a family

that cares about her or... somewhat seems to

care about her with the other one. She said isolated

with no one around her. We don't know more than

that. So I feel like the next volume would make

sense in almost in a way that we get her story

that it takes a step back to kind of figure out

where exactly. She's coming from yeah. I mean

I I want more background on that whole like what

happened to this You know what happened? How

did she become evil or was she evil? I mean our

perception is that she was evil because she wants

to take all these Haints and all these monsters

and pretty much take over the world because it

almost becomes like a very Finger like kind of

like mustache twirling villain almost at the

end of it where I want to take over the world

because you aren't going to do it So i'm gonna

do it for you. Don't you know who our mother

is? Our mother was a witch and you're not the

which I want you to be. I hope there is a lot

more kind of information about where she came

from if she in fact is the other child that was

in the tree and maybe you see a flashback where

she's crawling out of the tree and you know is

raised by some of the monsters in Haro County

or something like that so that remains to be

seen. So the more I talk it out the more I'm

interested. I guess I was expecting Like like

you said to like the kind of climactic battle

that never really is you think there's I mean

all the monsters do fight each other in the panels,

but it's not as big of an epic apocalyptic kind

of battle that you get you get basically at the

end a The good switcheroo. I kind of liked near

the very end too since the arts wins and she

tries to go See, um, see her caretaker and like

tricks I didn't really see that coming. I was

like, Hmm, that's interesting. It's like, Oh,

well, they're twins. Of course she is the bad

twin trying to kill, you know, she, cause she

basically says I'm going to wipe out everybody.

Love kind of like a very evil, devious plan like

that. Yeah. I mean, there is some interesting

things going on. There's I like the introduction

of a few more of the kind of creatures and how,

uh, the main character, the main character, uh,

is it Emmy? I always forget what the main characters.

Name is it's uh, I mean, yeah, so you see her

kind of doing her good work around the town But

then she won't do the one thing for the one guy

who was like, oh this guy's messing with my wife

You I want you to hurt him and kill him. She's

like, yeah, I'm not gonna do that But then the

evil twin goes to town and says like, okay I'll

help you and then she turns the guy into like

a tree from the inside out Some of those panels.

I really like to the brought that rule Like horrific

horror element to it, which I liked a lot I thought

that was a really cool little thing there and

it looked really like whoa, that's scary That's

really creepy how she did that So I like how

they they spliced that in there every now and

then nothing really comes of it is basically

she does the guy's bidding because she is Evil

wants to use her true powers and things like

that. So like I said, it's gets a little mustache

twirly but again, it wraps up pretty neat and

You have the next adventure of me. I'm sure after

this and hopefully some sprinkling in of maybe

the the fallout from uh, what happened to her

sister at the end of the What is it issue eight

basically? Yeah, what what I do like about it

is, you know And what I thought it was kind of

setting up because it's actually I've only read

the first volume This is the first time i'm reading

this the second volume of this Is that within

a lot of this is within you know, the the context

of her sister coming in You just you have this

kind of internal debate that she's going through

emmy She's going through with the idea of like

she's not sure in in a sense of what is like

real in a way or like what is What what is she

p o ordaining the fact that she is almost like,

you know, she's basically not a God, but she's

created the world that's around her. The people

that are around her, they're basically, you know,

bending to her will or maybe she's, maybe they're

not. And the idea of basically where's free will

come in? What is a product of her own design

in the fact that are these people have affection

to her because it's something that she created

within them or is it something of their own making?

And just that. And then the loneliness that attacks

in top of that realizing that maybe she is alone

or isn't she alone or what? so I thought that

just opened the door for a lot of interesting

discussion and you know, basically within this

horror rich story you have kind of this idea

of creationism and what it is to be a god or

you know, when exactly does free will take cold

and Kind of the different sides of it because

we see how we see the way that she Uses her power

compared to that of her twin sister also made

me think is her sister her own creation is is

that again a piece of her that she one at a time

purged and it kind of fled and it grew and like

you mentioned maybe it was the other body that

was pulled out at the same time and maybe that

body in fact was once a whole and during the

birthing periods or whatever you want to call

it she was able to pull that out of her, and

it's almost like a, you know, a people -dominal

ganger, in a sense, and that's why she almost

has remorse for her sister, or she has some sort

of hope that she could become more than she is,

because she realizes that, in a way, her doing

is of her own making or something of that nature.

It doesn't necessarily, obviously, directly say

that, but I felt like it was kind of leading

towards that, and maybe it will in the future.

Yeah, I totally see that. And there's also like

the apprehension about using your powers as you

may see fit versus like the sisters, like I'm

going to use all my powers that I have the way

I want to do it as well. So there's like that

always that struggle between the two sisters.

And it always comes back to, I guess, like, you

know, their mother and, you know, our mother

gave us this gift. You don't want to use this

gift. What's wrong with you? We should be You

know at the end of it almost like I feel like

she wants to kind of rule together with with

her sister But her her sister's like I I don't

want to show my true potential and there's like

this apprehension going on with her as well,

too But yeah, she is like pretty much an all

-powerful being. She could do whatever she wants.

She's like, Jesus, come back to earth. You can

heal the sick, fix the blind, do this, do that.

And her sister's like, yeah, I know I can do

that. I want to do all those things. Oh, but

I also want these animals. And I like the thing

too with the sister having the commune with like

all the other like monsters and Hanes in the

world. And all the Hanes are kind of confused.

Like, wait a minute, you just told me to, you

know, Buzz off. And now you're here back with

me, feeding me maggots and flies and everything

like that too. So I do like that kind of funny

thing. So there's still like a lot of complication

between the sisters and like all these other

creatures that are in the world as well too.

So it's, um, I don't know. There's some, there's

some cool things going on, but I do like what

you said about, you know, uh, Emmy and her kind

of, kind of like pseudo apprehension about what

she really wants to do and what kind of care.

What kind of maker or un -maker she wants to

be? Yeah, I think even see that the struggle

within the way she wants to interact and deal

with her sister as her sister is trying to overthrow

her or rise to power and take her place or undercut

everything she's been working towards. She obviously

goes toe -to -toe and even though we see it end

up where it does, where her sister finally is

taken out by their dead mother, there's even

kind of a sadness there where she's not all that

happy that it led to that. You know, she has

some kind of, she even like says at like one

point, I'm sorry. And it's almost, it's like

a sorry and apology to the way things got. And

if she's, if it's not just because of that, it's

because maybe she wasn't paying attention the

way she should or what exactly caused that apprehension

or the fact that, you know, she just, she sees

what her sister has been turned into and maybe

not all her sister's own doing because as she

realizes she's she's come from a loving community

even if if it's something that she created herself

or her sister seems to be absent of that and

that's kind of driven her to do what she did

yeah yeah i i mean it's gonna be interesting

to see like who else because you basically you've

gotten rid of like the first big bad of of this

entire series i feel at this point maybe the

mother will be a bigger fixture coming because

at the end essentially you see I mean, it's kind

of like a very Friday the 13th kind of moment

where the mother comes out of the ground to Take

the dot take the daughter back to hell. So that's

the way I kind of saw it a little bit But then

there was that kind of i'm sorry, you know so

Was this emmy's will or was this the mother by

the tree coming back to life to bring her daughter

back down to hell? So it's kind of interesting

why she's saying Sorry, is she sorry that she

didn't get to know her better? Sorry that she

wasn't able to help her and make her see the

error of her ways I mean, is she sorry that she

conjured back her mother to take her away? I

mean, there's a lot of different things going

on in there So I mean, I mean, I'm probably reading

into this a lot more than I probably should it's

probably just literally Yeah, the mother is a

skeleton zombie and didn't like the other daughter

and took her to hell. So there you go folks.

That's what No, I like your where you're going

with it I think that makes a lot of sense and

it's funny that you mentioned Friday the 13th

because I Definitely see that homage now, but

at the time I did not pick that up whatsoever

Maybe it's my lack of knowledge with that group

But it doesn't sir does certainly have a feel

like that even if it's not attention Just the

the look of the mother coming up from the ground

with with that all stretched hand Very much.

I sure you could take that image and put them

side by side and they would and they would have

a very similar Look back to back like that Yeah,

I thought of it right away. It also makes you

think, too, if it is connected to the Friday

13th, what happens at the end of that? That's

the beginning of the creation of something new.

So is that signaling that something else is going

to be kind of? birthed out of this is just the

beginning of something much more dangerous. You

know, it was Ellie or was this just a sign of

more to come? And there's much more out to this

world than we realize because we really haven't

seen a lot outside of these, this one location.

And it's interesting. This, the different field

that we see at the very end of this book, even

compared to when the story began, it's there's

almost a calmness that didn't exist prior to

this final piece of this second volume. Yeah,

because yeah, because even at the end, like the

end panel is basically like, you know, her talking

to her dad, rebuilding the house and things like

that. But then the tree that everything started

from is like now fully like it's bloomed, like

it's green. It's like, you know, very vibrant.

And before that, the tree was like a dead, snarling,

you know, disgusting tree. So I don't know if

like, you know, that's going to come back or

if that was some type of. What's the word I'm

looking for? It's kind of like, I don't want

to say fertilizing the earth or something like

that, but it's kind of like brought back down

this, you know. And the other thing you could

think of too is that this is, I mean, this is

kind of a crazy theory or something like that.

What if that wasn't Emmy and that was the sister

who got taken down the hell? I mean, you don't

really know they're twins. I mean, The panels

can play tricks on you every now and then about

who's really talking to who and things like that.

So Maybe there's something to do with that. I

mean i'm reaching i'm sure i'm sure it wasn't

the Bad guy who wins because there really wasn't

anything come come at the end of it like wink

It's really not me, you know, who knows but um,

who knows? I mean, I don't know if something

was brought down to like to the earth to like

make this tree strong again and big again. Would

it be somebody who's like kind of evil or would

it be somebody who's kind of good? I don't know.

That's the way I kind of think about that a little

bit. I doubt it, but who knows? I mean, I see

that's certainly a possibility. I didn't get

that personally when I read it. I thought it

was clear who who was who, though I do like the

idea of this tree becoming something more, maybe

something like the creature from. Little shop

of horrors, you know going where becomes his

pet that she can't control and she has to end

up Feeding it her her own creation or something

crazy of that nature Yeah, it's like Exactly

exactly. Yeah, because the other thing of this

obviously is that we know there are many more

volumes to come I think they're you know in seventh

volume as of right now So how do you keep this

story going and it makes me think of something

like, you know the Walking Dead for example in

the sense of that is zombie movie that just keeps

moving and moving and this again is a horror

story that keeps evolving and How do you keep

getting material like that? Where is that? You

know, where is the conflict coming from? Where

are the scares coming from? We've seen pieces

of this world and it seems like with each passing

issue it expands further and further out How

can you keep it going without it feeling redundant?

How can you keep these characters developing

and obviously with the second volume? Speaking

of what we're talking about it seems they've

had a lot of they open the door for a lot of

further exploration in a good way where a lot

of questions are answered but those answers open

the door for more questions or more intriguing

questions a little more deeper questions and

we're getting a little bit of a sense of how

this world functions but then the fun part becomes

when that function breaks down and it has to

start all over again Yeah, absolutely. I mean,

like you said, there's seven, so there's five

more volumes. So there's another, you know, however

many, 20 more issues or something like that ahead

of us. It's still going, so it's still ongoing.

And what did you think of like all the little

tales from Harrow County? I mean, those are some

of my favorite parts of the book. I mean, I like

the book itself, but I like the little kind of

like Easter egg -y little things that are going

on. Like, you know, the... Kind of mythos that

keeps building. I don't know if it's going to

come to anything. It just kind of reminds me

of like, uh, things that Scott Snyder would put

in some of his Batman books where it's like,

you know, here's another side story that happened

in Gotham while this is going on too. So I like

them. I really enjoyed those. I really love it

when you have a comic, a single comic like that

that can really expand its world and give you

a different sense of how things are happening

or what's happening outside of the main story.

I think of something like Black Hammer that also

exists in Dark Horse that's doing that right

now with a lot of actual full series that take

a character that's in the background. Center

an entire series out of them and you really I

think again expand the world and make it seem

Like the scope is much larger than it is But

without losing the intimacy of the issues that

you're reading, you know It's not this like endless

amount of continuity that you need to follow

like you would with a superhero universe But

it does feel like a world that's lived in that

is Operating even if you're not seeing every

bit of it within the story that you're reading

currently Yeah, I mean it cuz they had the one

story about the bats And like the kid kind of

turns it like a bat kid almost I feel like this

town Trance like it does a lot of weird things

to kids It turns him into monsters just like

the skin kid. I feel like that was one of the

first stories in like the side stories in the

first volume and now you had that other monster

they kind of introduced earlier on in volume

two with that he's living in the uh the attic

or uh something like that he's like oh this thing

is gonna eat us he's scary um introducing all

these other new kind of characters because all

the monsters i like all the monster designs a

lot and i like seeing all these different creatures

that somehow just Populate the forest of Morrow

County as well. So I feel like these things are

like little allusions to Here are the origin

stories to these other creatures that are around

so Yeah, I agree. I think this there's we've

seen some creatures in this and it's like with

each passing issue We're getting more and more

of the idea of like what this world entails and

like similar to black camera I would be really

for if they decide to say let's do some spin

-off series or spin -off one shots or what have

you that can delve deeper into them and get some

more mythology built up taking one of those you

know, back matter stories and maybe even making

a little mini -series out of it or a comic about

it because, like you mentioned, there's a lot

there and each of them have their own unique

tale, their own rules, their own cool look to

them. And that way when they show up again in

another comic, it's like, OK, I even know more

about them outside of just how the interaction

with Ellie and things of that nature. So I really

would be interested in seeing more about them

and the world in general. Yeah, I mean I'm open

to that I mean I like I like the world -building

that's going on and I love little creatures that

are being created and kind of learning about

them and you know I want to learn more about

the minotaur Big monster living in the cabin

like why is he in the cabin? Why does he kind

of talk kind of weird as well, too? Yeah, he

seems to really hate picnics for some reason

Yeah, why does he look yeah, what's this guy's

problem? So I do like that I like and I like

the the skinned kid as well, too I mean, I think

that's probably outside of the big minotaur that

is probably the most Like probably the first

or second most iconic kind of creature or like

monster that's been created in this series as

well, too. So Yeah, I really like that character

in his design and he has a really cool look to

him and I feel like kill be one that we get More

and more with the different issues that come

but uh, that was pretty much all the things I

had Did you have anything else specifically you

wanted to talk about regarding the second volume

of Howard County? Oh, no, that's kind of about

it I mean, I'm glad that no eight issues was

one nice kind of tidy story arc and Looking forward

to probably reading more of this. I mean, I'm

kind of invested already. I mean, I'm glad that

If I got done with volume two, I don't need to

pick something up right away because I feel like

this was already like kind of a Done arc and

then I don't know if it's gonna You know just

go fresh and where it's really gonna go which

I kind of like it It feels like it's starting

up the comic book all over again because you're

getting kind of a fresh start Yeah, I think that's

very true. And I think it's like, you could probably

pick up the second volume without reading the

first volume. And I think understand enough of

it to fully follow it, which isn't always just

the case when it comes to like serialized storytelling,

when it comes to comic books, like create a series

like this, because it is built upon itself so

much. Now, obviously there are bits and pieces

that help explain things more, but I do think

it's really cool in a sense where it can be contained

enough, where you get enough within each individual

volume so far. and we've only done the first

two, but at the same time, it still feels connected,

but not 100 % reliant upon everything that came

before, which is a good balance to strike when

it comes to this type of storytelling. Yeah,

I mean, I like that. It keeps you invested and

lets you kind of start over and keep reading,

but you don't have to keep reading issue one

to 275. It's like, thank goodness you're not

crossing all these other characters involved,

too. It's like, good, I get to concentrate on

a singular narrative that I can get easily invested

in. Very true, very true. So Matt, if more people

again. Well, yeah, it's addicting. I was lucky

enough to get a little bit of a glimpse of your
