Megatron Phillips, Mike TFG1 Blanchard, Kevin
Optimus Solo Thompson, and Michael Peekoncourt
Wilson. Hello and welcome to the GeekCaster Radio
Network 2011 Year in Review Show. I am one of
your hosts, TFG1 Mike, and joining me is Optimus
Solo, hello. Happy New Year! Yes, exactly. Peekoncourt
Michael, hello. Hey, how's it going? It's going
and Steve Megatron. Hello. Hello Before we get
into our recap of 2011 We're gonna join in unison
singing Auld Lang Syne No, I have no but I'll
have Steve put the Kenny G version at the end
of the show Excellent What have I been up to?
Let's see. What have I been up to? Yeah behind
the voice actors comm Doing a few I did a blog
post on Geekcast Radio that we'll be talking
about later on in the show. Let's see. What else
have I been doing? I don't know. It's all a blur.
It's holiday season. What about you, Michael?
You know, I haven't done anything creative in
at least a month. So it's mostly just, you know,
me being a dad. That type of thing. Yeah, I suppose.
I mean, yeah, there's that. Christmas we got
lots of Legos for the boys. We've been I've been
building Lego sets lately and that's been very
fulfilling Awesome. Yep. There you go. What about
you Steve? What are you been up to? Um Pretty
much just preparing for the end of the year stuff
Watching a lot of TV I ordered a pop screen filter
for my microphone Which should be here tomorrow
Cool Just in time for the year -end review podcast,
right? No, it's not not here now. It'll be here
tomorrow. It's gonna be late because this is
pre -recorded but um, yes But yeah, and then
I wiped out my entire computer and spent I think
that's the fastest I've ever gotten it up and
running again Six hours from start to finish
Wow There was no sleep that day or night. Yeah,
that's pretty much it You can sleep when you're
dead And as far as I go I've been doing some
blogging myself I've been recording tune cast
beyond preparing for this Sending off email requests
for interviews for next year and all that good
stuff I think where we're going to start with
this. Where are we starting Steve? Well We are
starting with of course the Beginning the the
thank yous and acknowledgments for the interviews
this year. Oh, yes, I Actually had to go back
and I counted how many there's only one that
isn't on the list that I put in the in the script
But overall, in total, we had 13 interviews in
2011. I didn't go back and count what we had
in 2010, but that must be an improvement. That
has to be an increase in numbers. I think I actually
had an interview for a year. I don't think I
did an interview this year. No, you didn't. Because
you've been a recluse when it comes to podcasting
you actually hate podcasting. Don't you know?
What we have gotten to time or a returning few
in the second batch so Oh, yes. I'm going to
go down the list in order. Actually, a first
for us, we actually interviewed two people at
once from the Command Center of the Power Rangers
podcast. We talked to Barbara Goodson, the voice
of Rita Repulsa, and Robert Axelrod, the voice
of Lord Zed. So that was a first for GeekCast
Radio Network this year, talking to two people
in one interview. And then Tara and I talked
with Jason Marsden. Lupus Convoy and I talked
with Phil Lamar. Tara Strong is a returning guest
where we talked about Arkham City and her voicing
Harley in that. I don't remember if Michael was
on this one. Yeah, Michael was on this one. David
Kay returned when we did the Transformers Animated
show and we talked to him. Steve set up the interview
with Brian Ward, which actually Brian will be
returning in 2012 as well. That was our first
DVD producer interview. Yes Yes, Brian is Currently
in my opinion the best DVD producer In today's
age right now for those of you that don't know
who he is He's the producer for shout factory
and shout factory is very nice to us. Oh, yes.
Shout factory is very awesome So acknowledgement
to shout factory. Oh, yes For me, one of my favorites
from this year was I actually got to talk with
one of my favorite bands, guitarists, Dave Brenner
from Theory of the Dead Man. That was very awesome.
Again, another Power Rangers interview. We talked
with the lady that played Aisha in Mighty Morphin
Power Rangers, Karen Ashley. That was very awesome.
Tom Kenny. We talked with him. I still wish we
had that audio of him... how he would answer
the phone as an angry SpongeBob. That was an
awesome moment that I didn't save. You fail.
But talking with Tom Kenny was awesome. Michael,
you were on that one, weren't you? I was. Yeah,
I was there. Yeah, no, he was very cool. I thought
that was interesting in that him having a standard
comic background, he would just basically talk
until we told him not to. Yeah. It ran a little
long. I just did a fast count. I actually think
that we interviewed more people the year before
oh Did we I think we had about 15 the year before
so but right around the same number, okay? Well,
that's because you guys did a lot of writers
interviews and actor interviews for the beast
unleashed Yeah, we actually interviewed Christy
marks twice Yeah, David Cage twice and Tara Strong
twice. But when you add in Kristy Marks and Tootelio
and Skier and Sorensen and Wise, I think that
tips the edge in last place. Right. Yeah. Kristy
Marks returned and we talked to her about the
GEM release, the DVD release of GEM. I talked
with Gort Lacey and David Lambert over on TV
shows on DVD celebrating their 10 -year anniversary
of that site being online. Very, very awesome
resource about finding out when shows are coming
to DVD. And then really the last one for 2011
was birthday present out to bottom us where we
talked with we got an update from Larry Kenny
on what he's been up to and talking about the
new Thundercats stuff and All that we also did
talk with Stan Bush back that that was the one
that wasn't listed We did talk with Stan Bush
about BotCon this year, too, but Larry Kenny
that was awesome to talk to him again Dudes super
yes most excellent Yes, and and next year's already
gonna be having some some good ones and oh more
that nobody knows about Your clue earlier on
that was mainly for you guys no one has commented
on that so far other than Steve so But yes. I
was like, you couldn't have made that more blatantly
obvious. I wonder who it could be. That was the
point, though. Because it's, you know, it's kind
of like something staring you right in the face
and you don't see it. And a lot of people haven't
seen it yet. That's because people aren't paying
attention to us because it's on holiday. Yes,
exactly. They're like, boo! So another thing
that we did and I'll kind of let Steve talk a
little bit about this is we We enlisted Kevin
to create a application for us because we've
had five people request to join the network this
year We're expanding. We're like becoming a syndicated
network. Yes. Yes. Yes What we're like TNT or
USA or TBS everyone's coming to us for exposure
Yeah They're like, yes flock to them. They they
know the way so now we have a handy -dandy application
for people to fill out Yes, and then that gives
us the ability to say yes or no Yes or no, you
know Oh, yes, we said no twice I've had five
applications and one of them was a 100 % no,
but The other one was just, it was too close
to content we already had. But the two, or not
the two, the three that we signed up for, which
are signed with, one of them won't be showing
up on the site until next year. However, we do
have two that are, have been on the site for
a little bit anyway. First being, What's On Joe
Mind? Which finally gives us our inside with
a GI Joe podcast Is that one all about sex? Because
that's what's on my mind. Yeah, it's what I'm
doing. Oh Joe mind. Oh Oh, oh And that was on
home mind No mind. Yes. Yeah, what's on bovine?
But uh, oh fine. That would be the cow episode.
Yes The secret cow level of Diablo 2. Yes, and
when Transformers fans go on that show, it's
called what's on Megatron's mind. What's on my
mind, indeed. So we finally have some GI Joe
exposure, although I believe we still have plans
to have more from our direct personalities here
eventually. Yes, there will be eventually once
we get done with a few other elements that we're
doing next year. But yeah, so that that is definitely
a nice and welcome show Love the stuff that they
got going on there another is a blogger in the
form of the movie revolt He has been a longtime
supporter of us since almost the beginning of
toy cast He's known as Godspeed on the boards,
but Dan Clark He filled out the application and
he said yeah, I know it's for podcasting hosts
But are joining networks as far as podcasts,
but would you guys mind if I would do blogging
and we were like, yeah, sure It's another opinion
that can be on the site. So he is gonna eventually
influence me to do dueling dueling movie reviews
though I'm sure doing stuff on the site again
being lazy bum and dealing with real life. I
don't think we can call it laziness, but yeah
But yes, and and the final one which is not on
there yet It does kind of have the the Joe theme
to it, but uh it's called star Joe's which is
another podcast which by far in any episode trumps
our Normal discussion episodes as far as time
limit. Oh Really? Yeah, well they hit three hours
and damn near every episode so Which you know,
I mean it's it's very well thought out. What's
the star part about? Star Wars and GI Joe, but
they're they're like a geek podcast that covers
things from the comic perspective So Wow that
gives us that gives us our comic relation to
all things geek nice Considering that's actually
sorry. I think we're lacking. I mean we have
we have GI Joe we have Star Wars I should say
we have You know transformers and and uh, I believe
we touched upon like masters of the universe
and stuff But we don't talk much about star wars.
I know that's my favorite franchise of all time
Yeah, that's the one that we had the uh, the
the part one and part two and maybe we can review
Eventually, I eventually have some type of clone
wars thing, but those dvd sets are so freaking
expensive All right Well, that will be later
on down the pipeline. But comics is a good thing
for us to cover. It's something that JT has been
wanting us to cover, and hopefully we can cover
it in more shows later. But it's good to have
some comic content. So that's another reason
why they got added. They will run a little close
to some of the content we have, but it's from
the comic perspective. So that is a nice addition
there. So yeah, that does it for the new additions
in 2011 to the network and Hopefully we'll get
some more in 2012 and grow there were definitely
for people that are listening We're definitely
looking for you know content that we don't currently
talk on or touch on Yeah, as long as it's the
rest of the fandoms out there Yeah, as long as
it's not too close to what we're already doing
like a couple of the ones that we've denied One
was someone wanted to do a bet like review bad
movies And it was just so... Even if it was bad
movies, it was just so similar to MWIRE we just
couldn't accept. As long as it's not something
so similar to what we're already doing, sure,
why not? The other thing that happened in 2011
was the site got a brand new revamp with version
3 .0 and Steve did an amazing job with that.
Yes, thank you. Everything looks real nice. Yes,
that went through, what was it, like two weeks
of troubleshooting before we finally launched
it. We definitely had quite a few discussions
on stuff. Yes, it was long -winded. Yeah, I think
for those entire two weeks, we probably had about
10 discussions averaging at least two and a half
hours each. But definitely some cool things came
out of it. I really like the way that you can
click on certain topics and it gives you all
the different Content that's related to that.
I love the featured guest page with all the images
that looks really cool And the show guide is
very cool Yeah, and you know you revamp the host
bios basically everything got revamped in it
and it looks just really Much nicer. Yeah, it's
more streamlined stuff is easier to find Easier
to read in most areas now with the new images
compared to the originals Yeah, and I don't know
I just I think a lot of parts of it just got
away, you know majorly upgraded and It's I don't
know. It just works a lot better. I agree We've
brought synergy to our core competencies. Yes,
and with that people want to join more So that's
that's a good thing and we did add a whole section
for host bios for both You know the main host
and the So you can check us all out and read
up about us there and have some fun searching
around and looking at all the different options
that you can do there as far as partners and
featured guests and all the different shows.
Very informative. Now, as far as continuing with
the site discussion, as far as I know a lot of
people every now and then will ask me, when are
you guys going to put an iPhone app together
or a mobile app together? that would take way
too much time and honestly we wouldn't even know
what to put on it because right now where we've
we've kind of gone in the direction of a mobile
app but we've gone through a different company
Steve through through what's on Joe mind brought
us stitcher which is a mobile app and desktop
app where you can actually stream our podcast
without having to download them and that's a
very very good resource yes If you're on the
go and you want to listen to the latest episode
of, say, Transformation Animation, or GeekCast
Radio, or Telecast, or Movie Weekend Review,
whatever it is, you can listen to. I think it's
like the first 10 of the most recent episodes.
I'm not exactly sure. I don't have it in front
of me. But Stitcher has been really great. Yes.
So that allows another way to listen to us besides
being on the web page, or iTunes, or whatnot.
Now Steve's gonna break down the numbers, but
when he first sent the original numbers sheet
to me, my jaw dropped because according to the
one that I have, and Steve can correct me if
this is incorrect, but... Oh, it's changed. I
got it five minutes ago. Okay, well, then you
can correct me after I say this because I just
have to say this. I would love it if we could
get this as weekly numbers, but over the course
of 2011, we've had... 5 ,846 ,422 hits. Unique
hits, unique visitors, or are we talking just
- Steve will - I'm just reading the number. I
don't know, Steve will have to - The number is
now 6 ,111 ,189. Awesome. Wow. They like us.
Some months have been, you know, a little slow
and then, you know, towards between like April
and - October we had our best months and then
August was out of this world. I know August was
badass. What did we do in August? We launched
version 3 .0 at the end of the month. Oh, interesting.
What month did we do, when did we do the top
100 was that? That was March to April. March
got 483 ,108, April got 557. That looks like
the big increase and it never really went down
after that. Well, it no, I mean it never went
down to the month the numbers that we had in
January and February Like if you not until July
July took a hit July went back down to four February
we're still the lowest everything else Right.
Yeah, it stays around 500 all the way through.
Yeah, so that looks like that top 100 might have
been a good thing Oh, yes. Yes, and I just leave
what's that? If you do a deep dive into the website
tracking, what pages get the most traffic? Aside
from the obvious like index or whatever. I'd
have to go back and look. Well, it would be interesting
to see what content is most pursued. Maybe we'll
have that by the end of the show. Maybe. But
yeah, so... Yeah, that's pretty much what's been
going on as far as that, and hopefully next year
we can double that. Or triple it. That would
be great. We've got some cool stuff coming. And
with the death of the Transformers related topics
for the time being and having different stuff
coming up, more diverse geeky topics, we ought
to be able to... Yeah, so it might actually grow
a lot more just because of that. Yeah, I mean,
because we've kind of, you know, we've said this
before, for those of you who have listened to
us before, at this point, the Transformers cartoon
coverage has run its course. For now, it will
be back. Yeah, it's run its course for now, but
we will bring it back eventually. It's taking
a pit stop. Yes, exactly. and Mater's in charge
of the pits. Anyway. So we're gonna, at this
point are we taking a little break from the site
news and gonna come back to it later? Yeah, we're
gonna take a quick break. So we'll be back after
this. So we are back here in the year -end show
and we're gonna kind of start the show off on
a little bit of a downer note. We're going to
reflect on the people that we have lost in 2011.
We have a huge list of people and it's just up
to each person to pick out whichever ones they
want to bring up. The thing we should do as far
as give props to those people that we lost before
we get into the regular 2011 content. Right,
yeah. Exactly. And I think probably the ones
that we should start with is probably One of
the most famous women in Hollywood, Elizabeth
Taylor. She passed away this year. Movie legend.
Yes, exactly. She was 79, I think, according
to this. Congestive heart failure. But yeah,
if you don't know who Elizabeth Taylor is, I
don't know what to tell you. Didn't she date
Michael Jackson? No, she did. somebody else really
famous. She's dated a lot of people famous, I
think, or she did in her time. I think she had
quite a few husbands. I could be wrong. She did.
The biggest one for me, the person that I was
most a fan of and most followed. Actually, there's
two. I'll cheat and give two because these two
people I was connected to my entire life and
one of them is Macho Man Randy Savage. Just watched
him forever on WCW and WWE. He was my favorite
wrestler growing up. Mine too. I didn't just
watch him. He was my actual favorite. All my
neighborhood friends, we all had our favorite.
One person's favorite was Bret Hart. One was
Sting. One was Ric Flair. Mine was Macho Man.
So seeing him pass was kind of sad. And the other
one, my mom and I watched a lot of his shows
growing up. And that's Peter Falk, or as most
people know him, as Columbo. I love Peter Falk,
from Princess Bride to his time on Colombo, just
the way he delivered lines and his style of acting
was incredible. He died, he was 83, and it says
that they don't necessarily know what his exact
cause of death was, so there's probably multiple
things going on, and I forgot to mention how
old Macho Man was, but I don't remember, I don't
think I said, so. I think he was in his 60s,
wasn't he? Might have been. He was up there.
So those are the two that stood out the most
for me I mean I can mention more later with those
two really hit home for me You know sometimes
you see you hear those celebrity deaths and some
of them just hit hit home more than others So
those are the two for me. I don't know about
you guys if you had other ones I think me hearing
the well, I know just to kind of piggyback off
your Peter Falk discussion there I actually found
out through Twitter and Facebook and I I didn't
believe it I had to go look for a news item on
it because I just was it was just shows so shocking
to me and one of the reasons why was because
I Remember watching Colombo with my grandparents
every single time it was on every time I was
over at their house We were watching Colombo
him and Perry Mason. We watched those two guys
religiously. Yeah. Yeah Think another one for
us that loved the police Academy stuff was Bubba
Smith passed away Ten -year NFL veteran and police
Academy franchise star Bubba Smith died at age
66 Natural causes so that's good. Yes Yeah But
that was kind of a shock to me as well. There
was a number it was kind of shocking to me going
through this list the number of Comic related
Spider -Man Superman Batman related deaths. Mm
-hmm. I mean we have a Jerry Robinson who was
a comic book artist for Batman Joker and created
the Joker and Robin as well. I thought it was
Two -Face too Probably. We had Cliff Robertson
who was Uncle Ben from the Spider -Man films
We had Michael Gough or go I forget Alfred Pennyworth
from Batman in the Batman films. There was at
least one other one I thought too. There was
just so many Batman, Jackie Cooper, Perry White
in the Superman films. So it's just kind of weird
how many connections there were with those. Yeah,
I think one that Michael will have a lot to talk
about is Corey Smoot, lead guitarist for the
costumed heavy metal group Gwar. He was only
34 too, by the way. Yeah, that was shocking.
Yeah, because I don't think he was with the band
since their inception, because they've been around
for like 20 years. But he came later on. Was
not my favorite out of the band members. He was
found dead on the band's tour bus early on November
3rd. Can I get myself in trouble real quick?
If you're going to be talking about the initials
RD, I don't know. I wish the Twitter guy was
somehow listening to this when it goes out. Because
I apparently caused all kinds of ruckus when
I made not so compassionate comments about a
certain jackass actor. And that I was proud that
I didn't know who he was. Did they die? Yeah.
Doing one of the stunts from jacket or on a jackass
type stunt, which oh my god to me serves him,
right? But anyway, that's me and then cold -hearted.
How did he die? It says he can dumbass Yeah,
you just said died during a stunt involving a
motor vehicle leaving the vehicle decimated and
seemingly melted Wow You know the other person
I absolutely don't care about he died during
doing what he loved. Yes, he did I'm gonna make
more fans because the other person I could give
two craps about, and that's mean, is Amy Winehouse.
I deleted her from my list. I agree. Sorry. I
know I'm a cold -hearted soul. I'll watch those
VH1 greatest lists, and they'll... They ranked
her as one of the 100 greatest artists of all
time because of her singing. The problem with
people like her... Sure, she might have a magnificent
voice. The problem is the celebrity that they
end up getting. The fame that they end up achieving
and just the downward spiral that that entails.
Outside of the pop culture, we'd be remiss if
we didn't mention a couple of the worldly, you
know, political deaths too. So we'll have to
work those in later. Steve, did you have any
that you wanted to maybe say some stuff on? Well
we had Dwayne McDuffie pass away. For those of
you that don't know, he was a comic book and
animation writer who co -founded Milestone Media,
a company known for creating multicultural comics
line. He died a day after his birthday from complications
after having undergone heart surgery. He was
also a producer on Justice League, Justice League
Unlimited. He also worked on All -Star Superman
and the final project he wrote before he or that
he worked on that was the written part of it
was completed that he won't be able to see, well,
unless he's looking down on us, which he is,
is Justice League Doom, which comes out next
year. That was the final thing that he was able
to work on. It'll be a masterpiece. Yes. He did
the Static Shock. Yep. Yep. That's what I know
him from, Static Shock. Yep. We have the creator
of Doritos that passed away. That's sad to me.
That the voice of Chester Cheetah? No, Doritos.
Did you see the part that said his family plans
on sprinkling Doritos in the dirt as he is buried?
No. Yeah, I saw that. I thought that was quite
hilarious. We're gonna feed you your last chip.
Hey, props to that guy for bringing Doritos into
the world. I know, they're good. Well, the normal
kind. You get into those funky flavors, it just
tastes like shit. I like the Cool Ranch. That's
where their normal flavors. Yeah, they have two
normal flavors the rest are garbage But yes,
and then moving into some more tech oriented
ones we have Steve Jobs Yes, probably the biggest
nerd death of the year. I know Yeah, although
I'm not a fan of Apple I'm not a fan of Apple
either, but you got to give the guy props for
innovating everything. He touches. Oh, yes if
it weren't for him all of our mobile hand devices
and our mp3 players and the tablets would not
be where they are now no because he's just a
crazy ass that probably was high when he came
up with the ideas and follow them through yes
not not to slam them I mean right right that
is how he founded Apple That and he was also
one of the initial investors in Pixar so without
Steve Jobs We might not have what Pixar has done.
Yes 3d movies and Toy Story and everything else
that's come from it since Any thoughts on Steve
Jobs Michael? It's a tragedy that he died it's
only 56 to Yeah, yeah Yeah, it was that liver
complications mm -hmm No, I'm sorry Yeah, no,
that's uh, that's a rough way to go I think he
had stepped down for about a year because he
was going to go in the treatment and he came
back for about a year and Finally caught up with
him. Yeah I think there's a couple other ones.
First of all, you know As far as geeks go some
people that I don't recognize or I'm not familiar
with but I'm sure the geek geek dumb out there
will know Elizabeth Slayden Who was the companion
to the doctor and doctor who? He was a fourth
doctor's companion. Yeah, so a lot of people
will probably recognize her She died right out
of the blue that was not even expected yeah,
she was still filming Sarah Jane adventures Yep
So I think that's kind of a geek related one
that we should bring up There's another one.
Oh, I think Bill Keen the creator of the Family
Circus comic strip was kind of interesting I
remember reading that was one of the few Sunday
comics that I read every time Garfield and Family
Circus. I always made sure I read So I think
that's kind of sad Family Circus was pretty cool.
Yeah I don't want Well, people may or may not
know this about me. I don't really talk about
it that much, but I don't watch news programs
anymore because they're so depressing. As a kid,
I always thought that 60 Minutes was the most
boringest news program on television until Andy
Rooney came on the screen and it was just hilarious
and Mr. Rooney passed away this year. I don't
think it was intentionally hilarious. No Well,
it was that snarky, you know witty Funny is the
fact that his final taping was November 2nd and
he died November 5th. It's like almost eerie
Yeah, that's very eerie. Yeah What always bothered
me though is every show that I wanted to watch
that came on after 60 minutes was inevitably
20 minutes late Because he had the final segment
There and prattle on and on and on and I'd pull
it a show on my DVR and instead of seeing my
show I'm seeing Rooney going I'm old as dirt.
I'm old. God am I old and it It's infuriating
is what it is. I don't want to say that I was
relieved to see him finally off the air It might
have been a better way to get him off the air
than to have him die. Dude! Come on! Seriously?
Mike's gonna cry. No, I'm not gonna cry, but
Jesus Christ. Another one I found eerie was because
I had just watched the celebrity roast. I forget
which one it was. Charlie Sheen? Don't remember
if it was Charlie. Yeah, it was true. I think
Charlie Sheen was Patrice O 'Neill's last Yeah,
I just was in that and Shatner So I just watched
the the Charlie Sheen one the night before the
news came out that Patrice O 'Neill had died
and that was his last ever Appearance and it
was just so weird that that I had somehow watched
that episode the night before he died like I
don't know that was just eerie to me like to
wake up and figure out I just watched the last
performance of a guy who died that morning So
that was kind of crazy to me. I think there's
some cool, I mean I know we weren't going to
talk about all these, but these are cool, geek,
trivial people that I have to bring up. Like
the dad to Violet Beauregard on Willy Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory. He died. The grandma from
Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore. And Grandma Huxtable.
Yeah. Those are all kind of crazy, just little
bit rolls, but ones that we all can remember
right off the top of our head. As far as what
they look like and everything like that. And
then Jack LaLanne, fitness guru. Everybody knows
him. Yeah, the one piece. He actually swam the
English Channel, towing a boat by his teeth.
Yeah. That was his thing in like the 60s. And
Obama killed Osama. That rant bastard. We did
have a positive death amongst us in the 2011s.
Him and Kim Jong -il can party together in you
-know -where. Yeah, they're gonna go buttfuck
Satan with Saddam Hussein. Is that an episode
of South Park? That was in the movie. I own that
now. So yeah, acknowledgments to all those people,
good and not so good, that died during the year.
Yes, I think the one good thing about about Obama
finally getting to Osama and killing him was
that now Supposedly can't make comparisons anymore.
Well By name is that Wow, oh god, yeah, there
is that but I believe that they made an announcement
that all of the troops will be home by New Year's
Eve Not in New Year's Eve specifically, I don't
think. They'll redeploy them somewhere else.
The war has technically officially been ended.
That one. Yeah, the Iraq war has officially ended.
They're not leaving Afghanistan. Not until sometime
in 2012. If you join the army today, you're still
going somewhere sandy. Yeah, they're going to
go to Iran next and take their nuclear missiles.
That's a whole other ball of wax. That's another
four years. Hello China. How you doing? How you
doing? Alright, so we're gonna take another break.
We'll be back after this with our top lists.
It's gonna get more upbeat here in a second.
Yes, yes it is. Top five music albums. It is
now time to get into our top lists and where
we're starting is... Top albums or top music
stuff in 2011 and Kevin and Steve have a couple
of mentions that they want to talk about So Kevin,
what do you got? Well, I just have a mention
because my favorite one of my favorite groups
of all time is no longer a group They basically
ended their run in 2011 Started back in 1982
the year after I was born and went to 2011 and
that's the the band REM I just want to shout
out to them because they were great and not sad
that they're over, but they put out two different
albums, Collapse into Now and Part Lies, Part
Heart, Part Truth, and Part Garbage, which is
a best of compilation. If you're an R .E .M.
fan, if you get that disc, it has every good
song they've ever done. And then Ben Folds put
out a cool retrospective, The Best Imitation
of Myself. That's pretty awesome. So those are
just my two shout -outs. I'd mention my other
one, but unfortunately, I have to admit that
it's going to be on Mike's list. Even though
I don't know what Mike's list is, I know it's
going to be on there, so I'll let him have the
glory of mentioning it later. But it is a good
album. I will say about Ben Folds that that actually
surprises me, because the only... it's not that
I'm not a fan of him, but the only songs I've
ever heard of his are Brick and Song for the
Dumped off of... Yeah, the Ben Folds Five, I
think it's Forever and Ever, Amen or something
like that. That whole album's good though. If
you go back and listen to that, there's like
at least eight good songs on that album. Sweet.
What about you, Steve? What'd you have for 2011?
Any album mentions or music mentions? I don't
remember exactly if Disturbed came out with a
new one this year. I want to say they did. At
the beginning of the year. Well, they came out
with Asylum last year. What they did this year
was they put together a Compilations and Rarities
album. But yeah, they've had new music both last
year and this year. Yeah, so I mean, I love anything
that comes out of that band. It's one of the
few heavy metal ones I can still listen to. Sweet.
The other one would be one I got for review in
the beginning of the year. which would be Stone
Collar, which is actually pretty good, and they're
not from North America, but you wouldn't be able
to tell that even by listening to them. They
sound like, you know, on par with bands like...
Alter Bridge, Creed, Nickelback. Yeah, Theory
of the Dead Man, all that kind of thing. It's
on par with that style. It's more so the style
of Alter Bridge and Creed rather than Nickelback,
but... I listened to it as well and it was pretty
good stuff. So. But yeah, those are my two. All
right. Now I have a top five list for 2011 albums
now. I also did a blog post about this, but at
the time I didn't have one of my picks because
I didn't. The way I base my list is what I've
seen or what I've listened to out of stuff that
I've bought or rented or whatever else. So. My
list here, there's only one difference between
this and the actual blog post. Number five. You
rent music? Huh? What? I thought you said you
rented music. No. Sorry. Didn't mean to sidetrack
you. What I meant was out of all the lists that
we have, whether it's music, TV shows, movies,
all of those, the music, TV shows and movies
are all the way I rank them or the way that I
come up with them is stuff that I've either bought
Whether that be music or buying movies and iTunes
or rented whether that be through Redbox or whatever
else for the movies and stuff So my top five
albums of 2011 number five Phineas and Ferb across
the first and second dimensions surprise surprise
This is the double disc CD soundtrack that went
along with the movie of the same name Phineas
and Ferb across the second dimension It's a cartoon
that has really good catchy music in it I think
my only gripe with this album is that they should
have made the exclusive an Online exclusive and
not a store exclusive because I actually bought
this thing twice I bought it through iTunes and
I bought a physical copy of the CD at Walmart
to get the additional ten tracks What we're on
the additional ten tracks Aglet watching and
waiting I don't have the track list in front
of me. It's like season one stuff. Yeah, it's
yeah the the album is a mixture of songs from
the show and songs from the movie so stuff from
the movie would be like kicking it up a notch,
which is a Slash guitar by slash. Yep. He wrote
it. Yeah Yeah, very awesome. My number four is
an artist that, like Kevin said with R .E .M.,
this one for me I have been paying attention
to and following since I was old enough to know
what the hell music was. For the first time in
the last 14 years, Darrell Hall has released
his second or third solo album. Laughin' Down
Crying and this album is just amazing. A couple
of good songs on there is the title track, Laughin'
Down Crying. Talking to You is like talking to
myself and Message To Ya are three of my favorites,
but Darryl Hall and also John Oates as well,
I've loved them since I was a kid. My number
three is a band I've heard about but I hadn't
actually heard any of their music until I heard
one song on an interview that they did with Rockline
Radio. Blackstone Cherries Between the Devil
and the Deep Blue Sea. This album is amazing
from the initial track White Trash Millionaire
all the way up to the bonus track of Die For
You. Really really awesome southern rock style
rock group. Other ones I like off this is Blame
it on the boom boom All I'm dreaming of and they
actually did a cover of Of um, oh, what's that
song? I can't remember what it is now. I'll come
back to it later All right, so number two I've
been following this band since their inception
since they Their first song that we ever heard
of was on the Spider -Man Motion Picture Soundtrack.
Theory of a Dead Man released. The truth is this
year. And I've loved these guys since their inception.
I actually saw them and hung out with them and
got autographs with them at a 2003 outdoor concert.
They were so awesome. This album's worth mentioning
simply for The Bitch Came Back. The Bitch Came
Back. Yeah. Good song. Yes. There's a lot of
songs on here that I think you would really like,
Kevin. Oh, I've heard most of the CD. My friend
has it, and we listened to it on our way to Sawfall
and whatnot, but the bitch came back the very
next day. It's just great. Yeah. The video for
it is very strange, though. Most rock videos
are... No, no. I don't mean strange as in, like,
strange weird, but it's just the concept of what
happens in the video is just really strange.
And number one for me for 2011 is, again, one
of my favorite bands since I first heard one
of their songs in 2000. Nickelback's Here and
Now. Most of what I've mentioned in my top list
here, I can listen to these cover to cover. Nickelback
is no exception for Here and Now. There's a lot
of really great songs in there. There's a lot
of, there's a couple of good party songs in there.
but there's a few songs that actually have a
message like lullaby or um oh what is it kiss
a goodbye kiss a goodbye is a song about how
fame is fleeting and it's just a very very awesome
song i think half of our listeners should stop
listening shut up top five television shows So
we're gonna move into our top five TV shows and
Kevin you're up first. I'm up first with my number
five Top TV show from 2011 now, obviously, I
don't know how you guys did it But I picture
2011 as to be the second half of last season
you know the 2010 -2011 season so some of those
shows were airing in the spring and then of course
the new shows from 2011 -2012 season so my number
five pick was on both of those and that is the
great and entertaining Hawaii Five -O. That's
my fifth best TV show of the year. Yeah, I've
said before that I'm going to once it hits DVD
or once I can get my hands on the DVDs or it
comes to Netflix or something like that I'm gonna
have to go back and watch that show from the
beginning. It's got a great cast you have the
dude the Asian guy from lost I don't know any
of these people's names the chick from Battlestar
Galactica the Asian girl and then John Locke
from lost. It's it's just to get a really cool
cast Terry Quinn. Yes. He's John Locke. He's
not yeah I Think the one thing that kind of threw
me off about this because again, I always watch
the original series growing up What really threw
me off with this is they cast? Scott Kahn, it's
really good in the role though As as Danno and
the only thing I can think of is is what he's
played is either a hard -ass background military
agent in Enemy of the state or tweeter from varsity
blues No, he's really good as Danno and the the
chemistry between Danno and McGarrett is really
good Which one was the vampire? What Now, there's
actually a guy in the show who played a vampire
in his previous gig, and every time I see him,
I can't get over the fact that he was the guy
that was the vampire. Oh. Well, Dan was the more
blondish, red -haired guy, and McGarrett's the
dark -haired, short, dark -haired guy. But I
don't know. I didn't know anyone played a vampire.
Yeah, I forget the name of the series. It was
forgettable. It only lasted about a season. Mean
this show isn't like an award -winning show or
anything. It's just fun. It's just entertainment
and entertaining and fun Yeah, all right Michael.
What is your number five for your TV picks? I'm
gonna go with modern family It's a it's a comedy
About about a modern family, and you've got Yeah,
exactly You've got the dad from married with
children The house is named Ed O 'Neill. Ed O
'Neill is in it. He plays the grandfather. And
basically all the children he has are Dorotic.
In a funny way, right? And they all play off
each other. But it's a good show. It's not my
favorite out of all the ones that my wife and
I watch together. But it's a good show. What
about you, Steve? What's your number five for
TV? My number five I'd probably have to say is
the a gifted man It's a little bit of a weird
difference to a different take on the doctor
show Because it has more of a supernatural element
in it So that that's kind of Why we watched it,
although it's probably gonna get cancelled anyway
My number four I'd have to say is Once Upon a
Time, which is ABC's... Q, wait, you're jumping
ahead here. Bite me. So Mike, what was your number
five? No, I'm just kidding. My number five is
a show that didn't get its just desserts whatsoever.
Because of all those... prudes that wanted NBC
to cancel it. The Playboy Club got three episodes
this year. I thought it had such potential it
was a fairly decent story going in and all these
groups went up in arms of oh they're gonna have
nudity on network broadcast TV which they never
did. This show had no more nudity than what soap
operas get. But yeah that's my number five. I
don't think people were scared about nudity.
Think people were just not wanting that lifestyle
to be out there Well, it's you know what it is.
This is just my thought on it It's it's because
it has the playboy name and it's because Hugh
Hefner his name is attached to playboy and you
know People are prudes. That's that's all it
is. Yeah, the guy's gonna die in a couple years.
We should at least throw him this bone He gets
enough of those God Yeah, I mean coming from
a guy who actually worked at playboy this is
uh, I Didn't see this as something that was going
to live very long No, what hammer is penis? What
what did you do? Kevin what is your concept?
Okay My number four is actually going back to
last season. Thankfully, it was given a full
season. Unfortunately, it did not survive the
cut and did not get picked up for a second season.
But it was my favorite show of last year, and
that was the Chicago Code. Jason Clark, Jennifer
Beals, and a great role for Delroy Lindo as Alderman
Givens. It was just a good show. I liked it,
number one, because it showed a lot about Chicago.
But it was just an interesting take of about
the corrupt police system and one main chief
lady or whatever her I can't remember what position
she had and then the one detective trying to
basically take down a corrupt politician who
was running the machine basically in Chicago
and it was just a great show and it's unfortunate
that it did not get a second season. How accurate
was it? It was pretty darn good I mean it was
fictional but it was pretty good for as far as
the Chicago stuff they showed and they talked
about was accurate. Now, obviously, it's a fictional
situation that's going on. Right. But it was
just it was a good I mean, luckily, they kind
of had a beginning, middle and end, even though
you could tell they could have gone on to more
seasons. But it wasn't like it was just left
with no finish, so to speak. So. Yeah, I like
shows that are centered in Chicago because I'm,
you know. from, I don't want to say from Chicago,
I'm from northwest Indiana, but I'm 20 miles
away. I commute there, you know, I'm familiar
with the area. So that's neat. What bothers me
is when you have a show that's supposed to be
based in Chicago and you find out that in reality
it's filmed in California and all of the L tracks
and everything are all on green screen behind
them. Yeah, no, this was, I'm pretty sure this
was filmed in Chicago. Oh, cool. It's worth checking
out if someone just wants a one season thing
to watch. Yes, I'm surprised I didn't catch that
one and a lot of people were up in arms it had
the most backlash when I got canceled there was
the most people trying like that was the one
show that most people were signing petitions
and trying to get back on but it was just Destined
to fail. I don't know if it was too close to
reality with all the corruption in Illinois or
what but Such as like Cook County's ridiculous
So that's my number four, what's your number
four Michael? I'm gonna go with Mike and Molly
This is a really funny show. It's it's basically
about two fat people who fall in love It's a
little close to home for me, you know But but
no actually the you know, I can't remember her
name again now, but the The actress who plays
Molly was it was in bridesmaids And she she was
awesome. She stole that show I Think she won
the award for Mike and Molly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah,
but Melissa McCarthy Yeah, that's her name. Yeah,
she was in the bridesmaids and and you know,
she like I said, I think really I really think
she stole that I mean that was that's just a
great series Anyway, Mike and Molly good show
Again based in Chicago The one guy is a Chicago
cop. They're always patrolling through Chicago
and they talk about the different Chicago neighborhoods.
And again, as someone who comes from Chicago
or near Chicago, I like that. You're Chicago
adjacent. You know, Northwest Indiana, for all
intents and purposes, is a suburb of Chicago.
We're still connected by the train system. It
doesn't take longer than half an hour to 45 minutes
to get there from anywhere here. All of the sports
teams in Indiana really mean nothing to me. I
guess it's like everyone here is all Bears fans.
It's either, oh, are you a Sox fan or a Cubs
fan? It's not like, are you a Colts fan? It doesn't
even equate here. So Steve, what is your number
four? once upon a time which is ABC's fairy tale
type story that they've got going which kind
of takes an interesting twist and all of the
classic stories that you would be used to considering
the crazy sorceress witch basically turns this
curse that pretty much her and Rumpelstiltskin
are the only ones that know what is going on.
Everybody else is oblivious to the fact that
they managed to get Snow White's kid out before
the curse was enacted, so that's the only person
that can break the entire method that's been
brought on by the Queen. That show is actually
pretty good. And my number four is something
that is coming up to return to its third season
in January. Something I caught in the end of
the second season and I've since gone back and
started watching from the beginning. White Collar
from USA starring Matthew Bowmer and Tiffany
Thiessen. Very, very awesome show. The basic
gist of this is... It's almost Dexter -like,
where Dexter is a serial killer that helps the
police. Well, this is a white -collar criminal
that makes a deal with the FBI and he helps them
catch people while also portraying his own agenda
as well. It's just very, very awesome television.
It's one of the only USA Network originals that
I absolutely love. And everybody should at least
give it at least two episodes, and if you don't
love it, well, that's your own fault. But it's
very, very interesting. What is your number three,
Kevin? My number three is one of the new ones
from this year, brand new in 2011, and just had
its season finale, and that's Terra Nova from
Fox. Probably the only decent thing Fox has going
right now. Besides their animation. But yeah,
it's a real good storyline, a real good plot.
Part sci -fi, part fantasy type thing with the
dinosaurs. Survivor type stuff, a little bit
of loss thrown in there. It's just a good show
and I really like the main character. And I like
the... Commander of the Terra Nova a lot better
than I did in Avatar But uh, no, it's just a
good show and if you haven't watched it, it just
finished season one So find a way to catch up
so that you can be around when season two begins
because it's definitely a show worth watching
Awesome Michael. What is your number three? Well,
my number three would have to be The Walking
Dead I really like this show. I mean I caught
it when it first came on last year on the first
season And it's like, I want to say the two things
that we could probably use more of in television
is A, nudity, and B, people being killed. And
this kind of at least gives you more people being
killed. By zombies. Well, you know, zombies are
another cool thing that we should bring to television
more often, but I wouldn't want zombies end up
being the new vampire basically yeah basically
you've got too damn many TV shows and movies
about vampires and so they they kind of snuck
in this zombie show and it took off it became
very very popular and it got approved I want
to say for two more seasons yeah and yeah I mean
it's just it's a good show it's got a good story
it's not about zombies per se it's more about
group of people who are trying to escape the
zombie apocalypse Not quite getting there right
because their life is just starting too much
crap at them But it's about how they react to
their surroundings how they react to each other
Because it's a very diverse group of people Right.
Yes. I mean, it's just it's an interesting story
But then you throw in the undead and the fact
that you can shoot them in the head and you can
shoot lots of them in the head Head shot head
shot. It's just a good visual. Yeah Zombies being
shot in the head, but yeah, I mean and they go
they go full bore I mean, we're not talking just
you know early Romero stuff with people shambling
in there and their suits we're talking like full
-on just a just a Stumpy torso wiggling its little
stumps that you trying to bite your brain Just
just that the special effects here are just phenomenal
Phenomenal zombies. Phenomenal zombie special
effects. It's a good show. I'd be surprised if
any of us hadn't seen it. I haven't seen it.
I suck. I'm not into zombie shows. The only vampire
show that I ever really have watched faithfully
is Angel. All the current state of the vampire
shows I don't care for. You are going to have
to pull up your panties. and watch the show,
Mr. I Like Angel. Anyway, Steve, what is your
number three? Just to comment on his real quick.
I have seen it. My wife likes the program. So
I don't particularly care for it, but I won't
not watch it either. So what don't you like about
it? I don't know. I just don't care for the whole
post -apocalyptic thing. And then having just
zombies. I don't know. I just I don't know. It
seems. It it's all that that kind of thing is
just kind of been drawn out already over the
last five years Between film and everything else.
So fair enough My number three show would be
last man standing Good show who would have seen
that coming but um, yes, this is Tim Allen's
return to ABC which I find myself enjoying this
show much more than Home Improvement. I wish
that they'd keep up with some of their better
writers instead of bringing back some of their
crappier ones, but I can't complain too much.
It's nice to see him back on television and not
to mention the people playing his family look
really well. Really well. You can say it. They're
hot. They are. Hot teenage daughters. What are
we talking about? No, they're all over 20. They're
all over 20. The funny thing is the the middle
daughter is actually the old oldest Of the actresses.
Yeah, she's like 25 and plays like 17 and then
the one that's like Like 18 or whatever plays
like 21 or something. Yeah, that's just creepy.
This is weird Well bothers me and I haven't actually
seen this show because I don't like Tim Allen
Just don't like Tim Allen. You know, I can always
either but I like them in this show. I can only
see so many Christmas related Tim Allen movies
before I'm just sick of the guy. I can't handle
it. I should take that back I don't like Tim
Allen movies, but I like Tim Allen TV shows Well,
he even said in the show he says what I'm not
dressing up in the Santa suit hmm. Yeah, that's
what I was about to say. It's it's the You know
the pre the promos that I've seen the previews
They the way he just kind of pokes fun of his
own career I find that degrading and demeaning
and But that's their stick That's what they do
Yeah, I don't see how you're gonna pull four
or five seasons out of him, you know roasting
himself Oh, no, he's only done that in like three
lines in the entire show so far He's only done
that like in minute times like there's been how
many episodes 10 or 12 and he's had literally
three lines that have Like reference to infinity
and beyond or whatever. Yeah, it's like three
individual lines. I guarantee you there's gonna
be an episode where his kids want to get a dog
and he does the whole big shaggy dog thing. And
I'll be like, I told you so. No, his kids are
all grown up. If he does that, then we will...
Do you bow before your greatness? No, it's it's
more about it. It really has nothing to do with
Tim Allen's previous career They I mean they
pour in a couple of those for homages, but it's
more so about the idea the concept of You know
a real man or a manly man kind of going by the
wayside to more What do you want to call it?
Metro? What is it called? Metrosexual sexual
type man Don't know men losing their identity
in a women's world and how he is a man's man.
He's an outdoorsman He works at a like a hunting
outdoorsman shop and he's trying to you know,
hold on to his manhood when he lives with all
females So it's kind of If you've got 20 year
old females living in your house, you lost your
manhood long ago Alright, so my number three
show. Yeah My number three is a returning show.
Damn discussion. The only reason why this is
on my list is because of the change that it saw
in its 13th season. Law and Order Special Victims
Unit. Stabler is no longer with us in the show.
They've brought in two new detectives. The 13th
season had a rocky start, but it's had a lot
of great episodes. It had a Captain Kragen centric
episode that was really good. And as the season
progresses, the new detectives have really found
their own way into the squad and working into
that family. So I've always loved this show.
I've loved it since it premiered. So that's my
number three. Without Danny Pino, that show would
be not worth watching. He makes the show now.
Wow. If it was just Olivia, I would not be watching
that show. Danny Pino is awesome. So Kevin, what
is your number two? Oh, are we already on me?
Yes. My number two is also a brand new one this
year, along with Terra Nova, my favorite new
show of the year. And I don't know, it's almost
like a guilty pleasure, but Revenge is an incredible
show. There's like a thousand storylines going
on at the same time, some very good eye candy,
and some, it's like a primetime non -soapy soap
opera. It's good, it's a guilty pleasure, but
it's good. And it's impossible, if you haven't
seen it, do not try to start watching it unless
you go all the way back to episode one or it
will be ruined and confusing and you'll want
to hit your head against a wall. Yeah, I'm waiting
until it comes to DVD or until it hits Netflix.
Wise choice. Yes. Michael, what is your number
two choice for TV? For number two, I have The
Good Wife. Interesting. This is a really good
show. It's Chicago -based, uh -huh. Again, yeah
again struggle base. Yeah, Chicago does rule
It's a Chicago based lawyer film and it the the
interesting thing is not so much that, you know,
they're lawyers and then they The whole damn
episode revolves around the minute being in a
courtroom. Normally, I wouldn't like this type
of show. It's like police serials You know, the
CSI is run as course for me the NCIS is run as
course for me, you know things like that the
this shouldn't appeal to me but but yeah this
is Chicago so it does well it's not even just
because it's in Chicago this is a show that I
remarked about earlier where I found out that
even though they have the L tracks going by and
they show Michigan Avenue every episode and then
the skyline every episode it's actually filmed
in California and they're walking on a back lot
in you know Hollywood studios or whatever and
they just have a green screen that they fill
in the L tracks behind them And that shocked
me. I'm like, no way. It's wrong, but it's amazing
how they do that. It's like, that is really cool
where you got a green screen and then suddenly
there's an L track on it. It's like, that's so
cool. Yeah, so they have these Chicago locations
that don't actually exist. They only exist on
paper or in special effects. But basically you've
got... you know the the good wife the reason
she is the good wife is because she's married
to a state's attorney and He cheats on her and
it becomes a huge scandal and You know if she
has to basically stand up for him so that he
doesn't You know so that his career doesn't completely
fall apart But at the same time she's confronted
with this fact that he cheated and she and she
she leaves him but She can't really leave him,
but she has to go back to work in order to support
her family Especially when he goes to jail for
the corruption charges and all that But so this
whole show came out of a law and order episode
It may have just just from how you're explaining
this that's it makes me think of any Corruption
law and order episode scandal, but I seem to
find law and order episodes they kind of they're
ripped right out of the headlines, you know and
There there's an awful lot of scandal in Chicago
For inspiration, right? Yeah. Yeah. So I mean
it's like take your pick here but the good thing
is that she's she's in a law firm and she's kind
of falling in love with her boss and Coming out
of season one going into season two. There was
a unrequited love that they finally Finally,
you know Yeah, they can't yeah at this point.
She's not a good wife She's a bad wife, you know,
and our kids are doing weird things and it's
stuff that it's not like weird funny Ha ha it's
weird. Like whoa, you know, what the hell is
your kid doing? Yeah She's got to deal with that.
But at the same time you've got the main story,
which is you know her in the law and the Doing
law she's she's in the courtroom and it's just
a really good show and every time we watch it
again my wife and I watch these together every
time we watch this together it's it's like wow
I didn't even see that coming that's amazing
how do they do that you know why would they do
that that is crazy how did this happen and then
we can't wait to see it next week yeah I really
like this show awesome Steve what is your number
two I'm cheating I'm going back to an older show
It's been out for a while. Okay, we've talked
about all... I mean... I'm going to say Supernatural.
Okay, well it's still out in 2011, so... That's
like 10 seasons in, isn't it? No, it's still
in the 6th season. It's going to go through the
7th season easily, just because they... While
I do love this show, I think since the creator
left... They've been just kind of running circles
around kind of playing with first season gimmicks
all over again So I think that they need to Kind
of hit the ground running when they come back
from break in January and Get the storyline done
What storyline are they currently on? Right now
there they have some forbidden hell creature
thing that God created that We're before angels
and demons That there's no way to kill apparently
Okay, it makes no freaking sense Yeah, so I mean
it while it is still Very good. It's getting
very convoluted very quickly So but I still do
love the show Yeah, I really liked that show
up until about the third season where I quit
watching it You know because they were getting
they're getting away from Oh ghosts and demons
and monsters into more biblical types. Yeah,
it gets very dark and then Things change dramatically
Through the fifth and sixth season And my number
two is something we have already mentioned last
man standing I liked home improvement to a point
But after a while, in its run, the episodes just
got repetitive to me. I liked a lot of the humor
with Wilson. I liked all that stuff. But having
Tim Allen back on TV and in a, you know, fatherly
role, I really, really dug it. I like all the
homage lines, even though there's only been three
of them. And it's, as Steve and Kevin have said,
it's not really about him making fun of his own
career. It's more so, you know, him. Trying to
be a man in a house filled with women I just
I love the comedy in the series. I love all of
the different skits that they've done like the
the three daughters did a Music video called
pie rack. Oh, yeah, but that was hilarious It
was So now we're going to enter the giant drum
roll Kevin what is your number one pick for top
TV of 2011? It's not a new show. It's a show
that is in its seventh season It is it is and
has been the best show on TV for a while now
And that is criminal minds It's not your typical
cop serial. This is nothing like CSI NCIS long
order any of those It has a freaking amazing
cast Joe Mantegna, Padgett Brewster, Shamar Moore,
Matthew Gray Gubbler is awesome, A .J. Cook is
freaking hot, Kirsten Van Ness, Thomas Gibson,
it's just a great, great show. The entire cast
is good. There's great interactions between all
of them and it's just really cool to delve into.
the criminal mind and to see some of the stuff
that they come up with um it has a lot of cool
uh quotations that they use at the beginning
and end of every episode um and it just i don't
know it's just a good freaking show and i don't
usually like uh you know stuff that delves too
deeply into the you know the Bad side of us all
or the devil that lives in some people so to
speak but for some reason this show just has
me and There was a great storyline that they
did with one of their agents who? They had written
off and killed Although she didn't die because
she had a big time in the past she was a CIA
agent and this pretty bad european guy was after
her so they had to fake her death but the whole
team thought she was dead for quite a few episodes
except for the boss and it just had some really
cool um in -depth storylines and they just lost
their uh overseer their boss of the boss so it's
going to be interesting to see how they handle
that and if there's any breakup shakeup or whatever
but yeah it's a great show it's my favorite show
on television awesome michael what is your number
one The number one show for me would be how I
met your mother It's just a really fun show not
based in Chicago oddly enough and it's based
in New York it's got Neil Patrick Harris who's
just really really really funny and and oddly
enough for Neil Patrick Harris he plays kind
of like a womanizing The type of guy whose only
thoughts in life are, you know, how many women
can I bang? It's got Allison Hannigan. Who was,
you know, in Buffy. She did the Buffy thing.
The only problem I have with Neil Patrick Harris
is I cannot buy into the fact that he is that
character. It's we you know after seeing him
in that character. I love him in that character.
He's amazing, but then you find out he's actually
gay I Wouldn't say it's obvious. I don't know
maybe my gaydar is off. I don't know Yeah, I
think he's really cool. I really like Jason Siegel.
Yeah, he's good He plays Allison Hannigan's husband.
He's really good. A lesser prop goes to Bob Saget,
who actually narrates. Which makes no sense to
me. It makes no sense to me. It's weird because
it starts off with a narration from the future,
almost like... Like Bob Saget's the future version.
Exactly. And he's like, kids, let me tell you
how I met your mother. And you know, it's like...
Bob Saget is he is really really hilarious in
real life. It's like you can't take full house
as the measure of his You know Yeah, no, it's
him being clean. Yeah, but here is he's just
a voiceover and basically all you see is you
know, the one kid from Wizards of Waverly place
and I think his name is David Henry and then
I know this because we watch way too many The
way she was Disney Channel, right? But then the
yeah, and then as the daughter which is I don't
know some hot girl Question is are they ever
gonna actually meet his mother? They keep hinting
like oh and you know, it's they keep going around
in circles and I keep thinking that the That
the mother is actually oh Hell Robin yeah, he's
thinking the mother's actually because the girl
looks a lot like her This is my uncle and aunt's
like one of their favorite shows, but eventually
they stopped watching it because they said they
just can't take it anymore They're like we how
many seasons of this can we take while searching
for this person? We just want to know who it
is get it over with tell us who the mother is
Yeah, well they recently has it in now What uh
third season I think? third season I think so
I bet they'll I bet they'll drag it out to ten
seasons and then in the series finale in the
tenth season they'll finally meet her. No, they
won't even do that. They'll leave it as a cliffhanger
that it could be two people. Yeah, that'll be
some crazy. It was funny, they just had a recent
episode where Robin was talking to her kids in
the future. And then at the end of the episode,
now this is really freaky, at the end of the
episode she says, and I kind of wish you guys
were real, but you're not, you're made up. And
then they just - Roseanne all over again. And
it's like, ah! It was really creepy now now that
I've given away my number one I wanted to recap
a little bit and say that there was three shows
that I was really disappointed in and This year
the the first one being doctor who? Mainly because
you know normally this would be one of my favorite
shows of the year But when they switched to the
new doctor the 11th doctor, I haven't been as
happy with Matt Smith There was a nice Neil Gaiman
episode in there in the doctor's wife, but You
know, I love Neil Gaiman. He's an awesome writer,
but it wasn't quite enough to make me as happy
with this doctor The next one is true blood the
fourth season of true blood just kind of bit
And oh god that that was horrible. Why did I
say that? Wasn't a very I mean compared to their
earlier compared to like season 1 which was awesome
in season 2 which was whoa season 3 which was
Wow, this is more than the same. It's really
cool season 4 just wasn't very good And my wife
and I love that show and then lastly Big Bang
Theory Which is should be It's it's great. It's
a great show a lot of people like this show,
but I think what's happening now is as the As
the popularity grows, as the audience grows,
they're not pandering to their original audience,
which was the geek. Right. Well, that's because
the show and the characters have evolved. And
they made a lot of geek jokes. Well, yeah, and
this year they had Levar Burton on they had Brent
Spiner on they had Stanley on I mean they still
have those geek jokes But it's not making fun
of geeks like it was in the first couple of seasons.
It's it's gone past The making fun of geek culture
and it's more so embracing it and seeing these
characters grow over five seasons I Would almost
argue against that. I would almost say that you
know, yeah, they're growing It's like everyone
else wants to see oh these geeky guys, you know
get girlfriends and then find their lives and
get real lives You know, and then there's a whole
lot of there Well, I don't want to say the core
audience out there But there's a lot of geeky
people out there who don't have girlfriends and
or lives and they kind of related these characters
and Now it's like wait a minute. This guy would
never sleep with Penny. He just never get that
chance There's no way in hell and then he turns
right around and gets The hot Indian girl for
you. Yeah, there's no way in hell. It's just
no no Yeah, it bothers me that they take directions
Going back to true blood because I don't want
to get into a big bang theory war with you right
now Going back to true blood. Have you heard
the news for season five? Oh, there's a guy they're
bringing in I want to say for my ER or something.
Nope Detective Elliot Stabler, Chris Maloney
is coming in as a super powerful vampire. From
Law and Order, SVU. Oh, okay. I know it's from
other shows that I don't watch. But yeah, something
like that. No, I think that's great. I think
they already have too many characters. But I
think the big rumor now is they're looking at
zombies. And again, zombies are the new vampire.
God. Alright, Steve, what is your number one
for 2011? Alrighty then, my number one is the
Big Bang Theory. I was about to say, no one else
has mentioned the Big Bang Theory. I expected
you to have it at number two and then have Supernatural
at number one. Well, if it weren't for the fact
that Supernatural has been dragging its feet
for the last year, I probably would have had
it at number one. But being that I've just gotten
into Big Bang 3 this year and the fact that my
friend had the first four seasons on DVD I borrowed
them all and we watched them and I've actually
got my wife watching it So that makes it even
easier to watch But yeah, I just I love every
bit of the show I haven't started on season 5
yet because I'm waiting till it hits DVD before
I endeavor into that because I don't really care
to download them all. Just putting it out there.
I just clean my computer. I don't really want
to try and risk a virus. But yeah, I mean, I
really love the dynamic of the show. I love the
geekiness that's in it. Yes, they've evolved
a little bit to the point that, yeah, they are
getting girlfriends and all that kind of thing.
But eventually that more than likely happens
to most geeks anyway. Is late, you know Granted
the ones that get girlfriends early or lucky
the ones that don't well, you know, you'll eventually
it just it's the same Unless you never leave
your apartment Then you're just plain sad if
you're like Sheldon fuck you guys I'm going home.
Oh wait, that's Mike I don't catch the reference
to begin with This all that much more funny Thank
you guys. I really love the show. I hope that
it goes on for many years to come, so long as
they keep it interesting. Oh, yeah. Well, they
find interesting jokes and interesting situations.
Even though Michael wants to argue against it,
even though I'm not a fan of the Sheldon character,
not all the time, he is Mr. Annoying to me. They're
putting they're throwing him into situations
that You would he would never put himself in
and it's just hilarious to see him in that So
for me for my number one Simply because I found
this show so interesting this year I'm praying
to the television gods that it gets picked up
for at least one more season is the return Sarah
Michelle Geller to the WV or the CW or whatever
the fuck it's called now with Ringer. Ringer
pretty much pulled me in from the first episode.
It is your basic classic twin switch places story
where supposedly one of them dies but really
isn't dead and the other one takes over that
person's life. But it has so many twists and
turns, has a great great cast. I mean you've
got Ian Gruffudd who was Mr. Fantastic. you've
got um... oh what's his name uh... christopher
polana in it as well as as uh... as her friend's
husband it's just a very very interesting show
and i can't wait to see what else what else that
they do with it yes everyone should at least
give it a try top five cartoons And now it is
time for our top five cartoons of 2011 and I
gotta say, outside of the top three, I had the
hardest time picking the four and five spots.
Mine was easy as peasy. No, not for me it wasn't.
I even have honorable mentions. Alright, get
your honorable mentions out of the way, Kevin.
The Garfield Show and the Looney Tunes Show.
Okay. Great shows, but I haven't watched enough
of them to put them on my list. They made new
Garfields? Yes. Yeah, The Garfield Show now has
Frank Welker as the voice of Garfield, and it
has Jason Marston as the voice of Nermal. That's
amazing. I gotta go find this. Yes, it's good
stuff. It's on Netflix. You know, I did see the
Looney Tunes, but I didn't put it on my list
because I completely forgot about it. But I've
only seen it a couple of times, but it is funny.
Yeah, those two are good. I just need to see
more of it before I can give it a spot on a list
of some sort. Um, but my number five is actually
completely different and I've never really talked
about this on the air at all. But, uh, I also
wish I'd seen more episodes of this, but every
episode I have seen has been freaking hilarious.
Pony! And that is... I'm sorry, what did you
say? No, it's not My Little Pony. Um, it's, uh,
Archer. Oh. Archer from FX. Which, uh, stars
H. John Benjamin. And it's a spy spoof. type
thing um it does carry a mature audience rating
it's just entering its third season and for some
reason i just find it very funny um it has a
couple people go ahead is that supposed to be
the same universe as c lab or just the same animation
style it's similar animation style and h john
benjamin has been on a lot of those types like
he was on uh dr cats and um aqua teen hunger
forest i think he did voices on um Oh, a lot
of that stuff. Space Ghost Coast to Coast. So
he's done a lot of those types of things, but
it's just a super funny, like I said, James Bond
007 spy spoof thing. He has a mom complex. It
also has a couple classic voice actors that I
remember from some other stuff. Peter Newman
and Maggie Wheeler, who is the girl that sounds
like the nanny, but she's not. Um, it also has,
uh, uh, Renee, Mr. I can't pronounce his last
name or John or whatever, Jeffrey Timber, um,
and Judy Greer, Chris Parnell. It's just, it's
a funny show and it's not for everybody. A lot
of people probably won't like it, but I find
it really funny. I saw some clips of that and
it reminded me of like frisky dingo. No, that's
a really good show. But I mean again, it's it's
funny, but it's got a kind of a spy angle Well,
at least a super villain angle. It's almost like
a quiet taste Yeah, no, it's definitely an adult
an adult oriented show, but it means it's good
stuff. I saw clips of it I wanted to see more.
It's couldn't find it anywhere Netflix as well
if you want to stream it I could yeah, I could
not find it on Netflix. Maybe it's new It is
now at least but it's just a lot of funny stuff
like he he works at the spy agency But he's a
complete moron and his mom's the boss and like
I said, he has a mom complex and his ex Wife
slash girlfriend. I don't know his wife or girlfriend
works there also and she's like just this busty
old hottie and She's now with a complete like
square and it's I don't know. It's just good
stuff It's funny. Everybody should check it out.
But like I said some people it's just not their
cup of tea What about you Michael, what is your
number five cartoon of the year? Well number
five, you know, I hadn't watched a whole lot
of cartoons This year for some reason but the
one thing I know As far as like series go The
one that gets played in my house over and over
and over again or at least has been for the last
several months is prep and landing Mm -hmm. It's
actually a Christmas special My kids love this
show it's about ninja elves that break into your
house yeah, they break into your house before
Santa can arrive and and basically arrange the
house in such a way that that You know Santa
will be able to easily land get in get out and
be on his way and the the next episode the new
episode for this year was all about the the cold
elf Brigade and basically if you're if you're
not Nice right the the ninja elves don't visit
you the coal elves visit you and they show up
and look for evidence of your if your badness
And if they if they confirm that you're actually
naughty, then they put a lump of coal in your
stocking nice Yeah, but it's it's it's really
cute We actually found a lot of the merchandise
at Hallmark So my boys now have a little prep
and landing action figures and you know nightlights
and things like that That's a good show. Awesome.
Steve, what is your number five? My number five
would be Thundercats. Okay. Only because I haven't
seen enough of it to give it any higher of a
rating. And I like the fact that they have Larry
Kenny back in it and they've got Will Friedle
on there and it just I like the voice cast and
the animation style and how they're they're going
with it so far They killed Larry Kenny like in
the first episode I know but they have flashbacks.
It's okay. It's it's sad though That's a rule
in cartoons these days you have to kill a character
in the first episode well It's like Optimus Prime
complex. Yes. Oh, let's not go there Alright,
so my number five is, even though at this point
it's only gotten two episodes because it just
started the end of this year, Green Lantern the
animated series. This is 3D animation but in
the Bruce Tim DCAU style. I really love the initial
story that they've told. I can't wait to see
more of these episodes. But the effects, the
animation, all the awesome stuff that they're
doing, I really like it and I can't wait to see
more for that one. I didn't realize that was
out yet. Yeah, it premiered last month with a
two -part one -hour episode, and then it's probably
gonna start running new episodes starting beginning
next year, probably in February. Huh, nice. I
keep seeing pictures, and they're saying, oh,
this is coming. It's kind of like the same, it's
the same thing that they did with Transformers
Prime last year. They premiered the five -part
miniseries at the end of 2010 in November, had
us wait three months till February, and then
we got the entire season. Well, off and on throughout
2011, but I mean, it's the same principle. They'll
premiere something with a one -hour special and
then they'll make you wait three months. Right.
Kevin, what is your number four? It might surprise
some people, but my number four is actually Transformers
Prime. The only reason it's not higher is because
it hasn't gone far enough yet in season one.
it kind of stalled a little bit both in providing
us with episodes and carrying on the storyline.
So I think it could have got a little further
in season one and hopefully future seasons can
remedy that. But the design is epic as far as
the character designs and the animation and the
look of everything, the style that they picked
was awesome. Even Even though it has some slightly
movie esque designs the overall like backgrounds
and imagery is really cool. The voice cast is
awesome There's not really much bad. I can say
about it. I just can't put it in higher because
like I said I think I need the plot lines and
the stories to develop a little tiny bit faster
But still an epic Transformers addition to the
franchise Michael what is your number four? For
a number four, I actually chose an anime High
school of the dead. I Don't know if you guys
have seen this probably haven't I don't know.
That's your No hates anime of all types Shut
up. I don't hate anime. I just don't enjoy it.
I I'm indifferent to it. I I respect for what
it's done for animation, but it's not my cup
of tea Well, they only had one season This year
they're supposed to make another season of another
12 episodes next year, but it's basically about
a Group of high school students who are trying
to escape the zombie apocalypse It takes a different
tact from like the walking dead It's basically
the Walking Dead anime. Well, first they have
to, in the first episode, they all meet and learn
who they are. This is, again, a diverse group
of people coming together out of necessity. And
then they have to escape this high school. And
once they get out, they basically go across Japan
trying to figure out... Where the safe spots
are how to kill zombies things like that and
they're really smart about it I mean a lot of
times you'll see people say oh don't go in that
room and they go in that room Anyway, they die.
Well and here they're they're really really smart
It's like they've studied up on their zombie
lore before they go out, you know and try to
and try to kill zombies but there's a lot of
There's a lot of gratuitous fan service here
Yeah, which which you know, yeah, it makes it
interesting in one regard but on the other hand
Like the walking dead. There's a lot of zombie
killing like like and they all you know, you
have to shoot him in the head Okay, fine. Well
lots of zombie killing But I would recommend
giving it a shot I mean if you like zombies and
boobs Who doesn't honestly come on well the boobs
part, yeah You know zombies we can leave at home.
No, you don't like zombies. No, dude the walking
dead rock I mean, that's just the this TV show
but like in general, you know zombies zombies
I'm not a fan of the undead. No, not enough.
I mean aside from the smell Steve what is your
number four? Wow Way to go and give him in that
follow -up The Looney Tunes show While I do like
the the fact that it's it's returned to television
I find it a little weird that they're in the
human world now The animation style is a little
I don't know. It's it takes a little bit of getting
used to For being used to the old way But I like
what I've I've been seeing so far of it though.
I haven't caught a whole lot of episodes of it,
but It seems pretty enjoyable from what I have
watched Yes, yeah, I'm really happy with the
I don't want to say the comedy here, you know
It's funny, but a lot of it's relevant and it's
like porky pig rents a car, you know It has to
be relevant comedy to today's standards of children
because I'm sorry none no kid today is gonna
get a Bugs Bunny Daffy Duck joke from 1945. I
can barely watch that stuff anymore, to be honest.
I still love that. That's a discussion for another
day, but yeah. But I've seen a couple episodes
of that, and again, it probably would have been
on my list if I'd remembered that I'd actually
seen it, but I watched it with my boys. They
thought it was funny. I thought it was really
well done. Any other thoughts on Looney Tunes'
show, Steve? Nope. My number four is the Looney
Tunes show One of the greatest things about this
show is The just the weird portrayals of of the
characters Like Lola. Oh my god. I want I wanted
to pull my teeth out after watching episodes
with Lola She is just so so strange of a character.
Why is she? She is that stalker creepy girlfriend
wannabe like she wants to be Bugs Bunny's, you
know wife type of thing It's just so weird That's
funny. Yeah I'm trying to remember which bunny
was the one that was introduced in Space Jam
low specifically to be a sexy bunny Lola Okay.
Yeah, cuz you know what? I watched this looney
tune in a couple episodes and I was like this
is really good and then I saw the Space Jam was
on TV and I said, you know boys come here Let's
watch the Space Jam. This is interesting. I got
about 15 minutes into it and said I can't watch
this crap. This is horrible I love space. This
is so bad. No, it was a vehicle for Michael Jordan
to play with Muppets or something But it was
just animation. Yeah, it was it was so awful.
I could not watch it. Anyways back Nobody else
would act with them So back to the Looney Tunes
show, what I absolutely love about this is, besides
all the different characterizations that they've
given the classic characters, the new voices
that they've gotten for the gophers, the gophers
are Rob Paulson and Maurice LaMarche. Oh, God.
What? No, no, I'm not saying that. I meant like,
you know, like if they couldn't have picked a
better pair to sit there and do that. I know.
Know I'm not really a fan of the 3d Effects that
they've given the the Roadrunner Wiley coyote
chases. Yeah, but overall I still love the show
Kevin what is your number three? I think and
again, I haven't seen anybody's list and I haven't
seen your list Mike But I guarantee you forgot
this one and it should be on your list my number
three hump number here is a One of the best incarnations
of this franchise in a long, long time, Scooby
-Doo Mystery Inc. This was a great version of
Scooby -Doo. It had some great references to
past good homages in there. There was one episode
that had quite a few classic characters show
up. Remember, Shaggy, we don't talk about Scrappy
-Doo. Thank God Scrappy hasn't been involved.
I blame Derek J. Wyatt, damn it. But no, Scooby
-Doo Mystery Inc. is really good stuff. It's
got a good visual design. It's just... I don't
know, it does justice to the old Scooby -Doo
and gets us away from some of the crappy versions
that involve scrappy... Like what's new, yeah.
So, Scooby -Doo Mystery Inc. number three. It
did not make my list, only because I have not
seen enough episodes of it. You forgot to admit
that. I've caught episodes here and there. I'm
waiting for season DVD sets is what I'm waiting
for so I can actually watch the whole season.
I would have got the season pass on iTunes, however
iTunes charges $50 for cartoon series season
passes for one season. That's way too expensive.
Especially when you want to have the DVD and
put it on the shelf or watch the commentaries
and things like that. I have I was actually I'm
interested in this show, but I'd never got a
chance to see it. It's it's very good It's one
of the it's probably the single best updating
of scooby -doo ever Because it it doesn't it's
not just individual mysteries. They're all tied
into one big storyline and it's just So far of
what I have seen it's it's just and it shows
it develops it actually shows like the families
of the characters Yeah, and goes into their history
a little bit each one of them and there's a little
more character development Like you said, there's
an overarching plot. So that's kind of cool And
it doesn't feature scrappy do as a main character.
That's the best part. Yes way we already mentioned
that I had read somewhere that Shaggy was dating
Velma. Yes Find that shocking I don't think that's
not something I like about it, but these are
two characters that I think should be like asexual
Well, I thought that was a given yeah, yeah,
that's been insinuated for the last 60 years
So wrong, oh my god, you know my number three
I I want to say This was kind of a toss up there.
I mean, I want to say like thundercats Because
I really like the thundercats show. I thought
they had a really good reboot I like the way
that they they handle it, you know, they didn't
do it the same way they did in the 80s They never
actually left Thundera Left their planet. So
you have access to all these great characters
and you don't have to worry about where they're
actually coming from It's like does everyone
get a rocket ship to this planet? How does this
happen? Well now you're you're kind of futzing
things here a little bit They never were on Thundera
in this new series Thundera is a kingdom and
city on third earth Okay, yeah Yeah, exactly
never left the soul third earth, but What I come
down to is in the in the in the 80s They left
their planet right and they went there and landed
up on third earth now here Yeah, exactly thunder
is a city or a country maybe maybe it's a kind
or a land mass or something and it's on third
earth, but yes, it's uh, it's interesting how
They're portraying it. I like the stories. I
like the the way that they are, you know progressing
the character so far and I can't wait to see
more Steve what is your number three? My number
three is GI Joe renegades Just because it's nice
to actually see them in a recurring Well, what
was a recurring show before Hub put it on the...
Basically, they put it on an indefinite hiatus
for the G .I. Joe movie coming out in the summer,
which is complete and utter bullshit. But yeah,
I would have much rather seen this show continue
than have this stupid movie, but... Hey, the
movie trailer was pretty awesome. I'll give them
that. The movie trailer rocks. The second film
does look like it's going to be better than the
first one. I never thought I would utter these
words, but the rock casting is brilliant. And
Bruce Willis. Yes, those two castings are brilliant.
That's what made it for me. I think this is going
to be a good show. And Cobra Commander is going
to have a silver faceplate. Yeah, that that's
brownie points and I'm happy now, but um, they
did it for me But running apologize for canceling
renegades, you know, you know what? They're just
not coming out with the renegades toys though.
I'm seeing the figure They are I just see oh
and it's like with Transformers Prime. I mean
they They they jump they missed the gun there
of getting it out for the show But I just saw
the renegades toys today and then they looked
pretty cool Yeah, renegades toys are shelf warming
everywhere at this point this first show for
kids to watch to they don't have a show Yeah,
well, you know, I caught a couple of the episodes
last year when they first came out It was like
well, this is okay, but I could at that point.
I lost the hub I saw maybe two episodes and then
the hub went to a higher pay bracket So I couldn't
couldn't watch it. Yeah. Yeah They couldn't decide
whether or not I had to pay more or not to actually
see these By that time I lost interest, you know,
though that they do offer the hub Chan Website
offers full episodes. Yeah, it offers all 26
episodes of the first season on hubworld .com
Well, the only thing I was really interested
in seeing at the time was transformers prime
and that I got off the internets in high -res
Yes, because they're from Predacon Empire My
number three or no, wait. Yeah. Yeah my number
three. I forgot who was talking there My number
three is Phineas and Ferb this show continues
to do awesome things Not only did it have one
of the highest grossing television animation
films of the year It in a year which there was
none Wow, just number three. I'm kind of surprised
to be honest expected more but this show is for
all ages whether it's little kids whether it's
teenagers whether it's adults this show has humor
for everybody and it is just so so awesome so
Kevin what is your number two my number two is
The visual design of this show is absolutely
gorgeous. Something very few shows get right
these days, the design style and the animation
style, and Thundercats nailed it. The voice acting,
although there are a few in which I like the
old classic voice actors better, I gotta give
them props. Matthew Mercer as Tigra is awesome,
and Emanuel The chick that plays Chitara. Yeah,
Emanuel Chickery or whatever. Not only is freaking
gorgeous, but she is a thousand times better
than Lynn Lipton. Let's not go there. Wiley Cat
and Wiley Cat are better. She's gorgeous? Wait,
we gotta go back here. Who is this girl? Emanuel
Chickery. I don't know how to say her name. The
actress that voices Chitara. I'll send you a
link here in a little bit. And then the guest
voices and the recurring voices, you have Clancy
Brown, Dee Bradley Baker, Corey Burton. You have
Gray DeLisle, Tara Strong, Chris Summer, James
Arnold Taylor, Rob Paulson. I mean, it's Hector
Elizondo. I mean, they're great guest voices.
The storylines are great. I love what they've
done so far. I can't wait to see season two and
what happens between Lionel and Tyger. But the
flashbacks are cool, showing Claudus and Jaga
and even showing the old Thundercats and the
old Mumrah in a different version. You know,
in the cameos with the tiger sharks and for Silverhawks
is really cool. I can't say enough good stuff
about this show. So that is my number two Thundercats.
For number two, well, this is kind of this was
my toss -up here. I mean I I like Transformers
Prime And I hate to say it I almost didn't want
to give this a number two because I kind of I
I looked forward to seeing thundercats Every
week. I didn't so much look forward to seeing
Transformers Prime. I would download the episodes
and they would set on my hard drive for weeks
until I got around to watching it. Last femur!
I know, I know, but again, I think I had issues
with the storyline. It just wasn't going in a
direction that I could keep up with or, you know,
maybe I'm just lame. A ladder. Thanks. I'm crippled.
I don't know. I mean, I think we've had this
discussion before on different podcasts. Exactly.
Never happened. But no, I'm not happy with some
of the characterizations. I'm not happy with
some of the animation style. I mean, I'm not
a big fan of Bayformers, and I'm seeing a continuation
of the Bayformer style here, even if it's dumbed
down. They have faces, though. Yeah, I suppose.
And colors. Does Bumblebee have a mouth? No.
Not really. Does Prime have a nose? No, not really.
Yeah, it's not so much of a face. Well, most
people have more faces than they did in the movies,
at least. Yeah, well, kinda. You know, his head
isn't a star. At least they don't look like just
mashed up pieces of metal. Well, again, some
of these are good. I want to say like Starscream.
I like the way they made Starscream. Soundwave
is awesome looking. Soundwave? You know, Soundwave
is not supposed to be a jet. I like Soundwave
as a jet. I think he looks cool. I just like
his face. Yeah, for someone who never speaks,
that's a really cool face. And he's kind of got
that techno viper thing going where it goes across
his visor, everything goes fine. That's kind
of cool. But, you know, I mean, there's some
things that I like about the characters and then
some things that I don't. You know, again, there's
too much Bayformer here. I want a Bumblebee that
speaks, okay? Yeah. I don't mind. They keep saying
that. They both will speak, though. They continue
to say that Bumblebee and Soundwave will both
speak. Eventually some way shouldn't I so like
that the last episode I saw where black arachnid
says I'm assuming control and I'm thinking Starscream
should be here for this She says I am assuming
control Soundwave walks right up to her. It doesn't
say a word beats the shit out of her Yeah, doesn't
even say ah, you know, it's in fact, I think
it was the Dead end I think his name dead dead
ends like oh, no, she did. Oh, yeah knocked out
knocked out like all Yeah, I mean he said it
for his it's like, you know, he just saw him
wave He cannot speak so I speak for him. You
gotta watch out for the quiet ones Exactly, but
it was I mean that I thought that was a cool
scene Uh, there were some cool scenes, you know
with megatron megatron is really interesting
in this He doesn't he he seems to me to be more.
I like the g1 megatron than some of the More
interesting incarnations of megatron that we
can mention but I don't know. I want to be behind
this show. I really do. At least the humans aren't
as annoying as they have been in past shows.
These are by far the best humans in Transformers
cartoon history. Well, besides G1. Well, G1 had
its flaws too. I'd rather have these humans than
G1 humans, to be honest. You don't like the Witwickies?
I like Spike, but... Chip Chase? Come on now.
No, I'm not a big fan of Chip Chase. Yeah, I
like the punk rock girl. I like the punk rock
girl. I like the fact that bulkhead is listening
to heavy metal I dig that You know think it's
like with the one episode where he loses his
mind and they have to revive him and she plays
some heavy metal music and he goes Yeah, you
know that I thought was cool. I mean, I like
that. It's I didn't like the episode Because
it's like, god damn, how many times am I going
to do this? But at the end, when she revives
him with heavy metal, it was kind of like, you're
going to rock! But no, I just can't get behind
the series as much as I would like to. I really
want to be behind this. I really want to be on
board. I just can't do it. You will be assimilated
soon enough. Well, I mean, if season two comes
along, they get their shit together, maybe we'll
see it, you know? At this point, I can't even
see myself buying the toys. Because it's like
oh no, the toys are awesome. I mean I'm not buying
the toys, but the toys look great Do I need another
movie prime? This is movie prime without the
flames? You know, I'm just not that interested
Soundwave I could see it maybe RC. Yeah, I got
enough Motorcycle females from the movie, you
know, they don't have legs, but you know same
damn thing. I Don't know. Maybe I hate to be
the party pooper. Everyone else will get black
right now It's gonna be, yeah. Oh, I'm sorry,
Air Ragnos, excuse me. Air Ragnos. Oh, I did
say Black Ragnos, didn't I? Shit. I will go out
and say it. Where's Black Ragnos? She's a spider.
Check. What the hell? Yeah, I mean, I just can't
get behind it. Sadly, sadly, we did get, we just
recently moved to AT &T U -verse and we do get
the hub now. And we are watching a lot more HUB
than we are at Disney at this point. So yeah,
I've been watching a lot of My Little Pony in
the morning. Because the boys are watching that.
And honestly, My Little Pony might be more well
-written in some of these Transformer Prime episodes.
It's kind of sad to admit, but yeah. Steve, what
is your number two? Young Justice. Oh, yeah,
was that this year or last year? It was last
year, but it started last year, but it's still
going so yeah, it's still going You know, I haven't
seen any new episodes from that, but I'd like
to it was a good show Um, yeah, so I liked Young
Justice and the animation style that they had
for it the voice acting I like the fact that
it's going from the junior partners the sidekicks
perspective They are not sidekicks. Well, instead
of focusing on the primary heroes that every
show takes on, it's in the same vein in a sense
of Team Titans, except it's not lame like Team
Titans. The only similarity is it's the sidekicks,
the junior Justice League. Yeah. But yeah, I
like that they're doing that. It's a nice take
on it. Yes. And it's dark as hell. Oh yeah. Oh
yeah. It's very dark. So my number two is, surprise
surprise, Thundercats. I already knew what your
whole list was. No you didn't. Guess what his
number one is. Shut up. Thundercats. is awesome
at first it took me a couple episodes to get
used to the animation style but the animation
style that they're using on thundercats is a
little bit anime but it's like western anime
it's not japan anime so it'll have big teardrops
over their foreheads or anything thank god for
that no power up sequences There are God here
we go There are a couple episodes in in the current
season because I don't know if they're just on
a on a break Or if they actually did end the
season at episode 13 I've heard that the first
season was supposed to be 26 episodes So I think
the problem with Thundercats is not so much with
the show. It's with Cartoon Network's handling
of it That could be said for a lot of Cartoon
Network shows. Right, but they had like seven
episodes and then they went on a six -week hiatus.
They had two more episodes, then they went on
a three -week hiatus, and then they finished
it out for three weeks. But overall, Thundercats
is really great. There's a couple episodes where
I'm like, can we just get to finding Mumrah already,
or can we just get to finding whatever artifact
you have to find? I mean... How many times do
you have to kill it with paper before it's done
right? That was a good episode. I hated that
episode. Have you ever seen read or die out of
Japan? The paper benders? Oh, that's a good series.
Yeah, I really liked the paper magic guy, the
paper magic people. I thought that was cool.
That was dumb. Yeah, I liked it. Good stuff.
So huge drum roll to go here. Kevin, what is
your number one? My number one has already been
mentioned, but I'll mention it again. I don't
know what it is exactly, but I just freaking
loved this show way more than I thought I would
and that is GI Joe Renegades. You know, there's
certain shows that people say, you know, you
just have to get by the design or the style or
the look and then you'll find some really good
stuff underneath that and I'm always lied to.
Fuck you. This one, I am telling you the God's
on its truth. If you can get past the look of
this show, you will find an amazingly written
show. The only bad part about G .I. Joe Renegades
is the look. You get used to it though. You get
used to it. You get past it. It has absolutely
phenomenal voice cast. And it's just such a cool
thing to see. what has never been done in the
GI Joe franchise, unless it was done in comic
format, I don't read comics, but to see the backstory
of the Joes and to see how certain, like you
get to see how Destro got his mask, you get to
see how Major Blood got his eye patch, you get
to see how Zartan, and it's just done so freaking
well. If it doesn't get a chance to come back,
it is a freaking crime. I will say that it did
do a good job of protecting itself in case it
didn't get to come back by giving us a whole
beginning, middle, and end. And it was a awesome
full circle moment because, and this is just
the ultimate tribute, the last episode of GI
Joe Renegades that we got brought us to the first
episode of GI Joe, a real American hero. Yeah,
and the the way that they did that was just like
genius the way they wrote that The fact that
it ties into the original, you know 1980s GI
Joe right into that would be it's just cool And
it would be really cool to see their take on
how the rest of the Joe's You know come come
into the group and get some actual GI Joe Cobra
action With everybody knowing that Cobra is bad
The other great thing about this show was all
the cameos of other Joe characters You seen wild
bill in a couple of episodes seen shipwreck They
had so many people just come in for one episode
firefly snow job Frostbite, you know, there was
just so many heavy duty They even brought in
Michael Bell and BJ Ward the original GI Joe
voices to play Duke's mom and dad Cool. And that
was just cool. And like I said, great voice cast,
great stories, great back stories. You just have
to get by the look of the show, which seems a
little simple. But to me, this was the best written
show of the year. I'm done. Cool, I wish I had
seen more of those I really do because like I
said some place it down and watch them all through
the whole thing and see the the progression of
oh And I can't go without saying Charlie had
their geniuses Cobra commander Mmm, so that's
all I got on that. Oh well I said that's all
I have to say on that. Nika Futterman sucked
as Lady J. That's the only other bad thing about
it. I like her as an actress. Nika Futterman
or whatever. She does a lot of on -screen stuff,
but her voice as Lady J was terrible. But anyway.
And Cobra Commander's face sucks balls. Yeah,
that is one little drawback, but that goes back
to the whole style and the design part of it.
I thought it looked good. What is your number
one? My number one would be Phineas and Ferb
And again, I was wondering why it wasn't higher
up on your list because I know you love this
show, too Yeah, but I just really like this show.
We've done several podcasts solely on this show
you know, I like to say that we watch way too
much Disney Channel and probably 75 % of what
we watch on Disney Channel is Phineas and Ferb
And sometimes not even because we want to you
know I mean it's just because it now that Disney
knows that it's their cash cow They're they're
really they ramped up the merchandising. They're
they're showing it Literally six or seven hours
a day on each of their channels Yeah, I mean
it's a good show it really I don't mind watching
the reruns we went back on Netflix and streamed
I Want to say all of season one and two Yeah,
well the boys and I just watched it for two days
straight. It was great I mean, I just really
like this show. There's there is there isn't
anything not to like about it personally, I think
Maybe it would be better if it had a stronger
voice cast because like we Kevin talked about
thundercats earlier know what a great voice cast
they have Everyone that you would want to hear
on a cartoon is popped up there, you know But,
no, I just really, I don't know, I really like
this show. It just speaks to me. I'll watch it
over and over and over again and have no problem
with it. And I like watching it with my boys.
They really enjoy it. I mean, the first time
we saw Aiden say, my show, you know, he might
have been, what, three? Yeah. Yeah. So yeah,
I mean, two and a half years later, we're still
watching it. It hasn't gotten old. no it hasn't
at all it's such an awesome awesome show and
it has been picked up for a fourth season so
can't wait to see what's what's gonna happen
in the fourth season for that very very awesome
consistently well -written in fact there was
a there was an episode we were watching earlier
a couple days ago where doofenshmirtz who's the
bad guy or I don't want to call him a bad guy.
He's not really bad. He's Perry the Platypus'
nemesis. Yeah, there is no bad guy here. I mean,
he's trying to do evil, but he's not really evil
in the sense of... He's very unsuccessful at
being evil. He's very unsuccessful at being evil.
He's very unsuccessful at being evil. He's very
unsuccessful at being evil. He's very unsuccessful
at being evil. He's very unsuccessful at being
evil. He's very unsuccessful at being evil. He's
very unsuccessful at being evil. He's very unsuccessful
at being evil. He's very unsuccessful at being
evil. He's very unsuccessful at being evil. He's
very unsuccessful at being evil. He's very unsuccessful
at being evil. He's very unsuccessful at being
evil. He's very unsuccessful at being evil. He's
very unsuccessful at being evil. He's very unsuccessful
at being evil. He's very unsuccessful at being
evil. He's very successful at being evil. He's
very successful at being evil. He's very successful
at He's watching this TV show because I guess
his cable messed up, so all he gets is the Mexican
network, the Spanish -speaking channel. Oh yeah,
I remember this. And he's like, it's like, you
know, Miamor something. And he's like, I really
like this show and I don't really understand
what they're saying, but they've merged three
different storylines together. It's genius. And
the funny thing is that particular episode was
in the process of merging three different storylines
together and this is three different storylines
merging together and Successfully, you know each
one successfully rounding out on a 15 minute
show. I Mean the writing here is genius. This
is just crazy insane stuff Yeah, it is and in
that episode had that wasn't that the episode
with the football x7 Stadium They think that
was I don't I know not that no there was for
soccer involved. There was a Yeah, there's a
soccer game on that was and because the soccer
game was on You know all the Spanish -speaking
people watching the soccer game instead of his
soap opera. So it was preemptive So he was actually
making it rain. He had this giant Yeah, the rain
had this giant shower head that went straight
up in the air and kind of dumped water into the
clouds and was causing it to rain on this stadium.
Giant shower head that turned into a golf club.
Oh, that's right. It did. It came over and knocked
their their giant golf ball. Yeah. Yeah, that
was the third storyline. No, that's okay. No.
No, it wasn't they didn't build a stadium. They
built. Yeah, it wasn't the stadium It was the
the holographic projection thing the yeah, it
was like they were on fire side girls with their
patches Exactly. So yeah, so they were inside
but at the same time you had Jeremy and Candice
who were not involved with Phineas and fur But
they were doing their own thing. They were having
a date inside the same habitat. Yeah And yeah,
there was a there was actually a yeah, there
was actually a song in there, too So, I mean,
you've got three storylines, three completely
separate storylines, a joke about... At least
two songs. Yeah, two songs, a joke about the
storyline, all wrapped up in a show that was
over in 15 minutes. Yeah. I honestly don't see
how they do this. It's really impressive. Yeah,
it is. It's very impressive. Steve, what is your
number one? Where's prime? Oh. Nuff said there.
Okay. So you know, if Prime had Swampy Marsh
writing for them... Oh god, Michael, can you
imagine Major Monogram's voice coming out of
Megatron's animation? Maybe not him, but I can
see it as like Ratchet. It gets a little bit
closer to Corey Burton there. Yeah, what about
Prime makes it your number one, Steve? Everything.
Okay. Well, my number one, lo and behold, is
Transformers Prime. That shows crap. Shut up.
Unlike Kevin, I will agree that there are some
filler episodes in season one, but even the filler
episodes have one or two moments that tie it
into the entire season one storyline. And I will
agree with Michael. Optimus Prime not having
a nose makes it look stupid I have always been
of the opinion. I don't care if they want to
have the faces emote Optimus Prime should always
be face plated end of fucking story Someone in
your neighborhood is being robbed and or burned
alive. Yeah, that was an ambulance or it is an
ambulance Next door to you, no less. Wow. Yeah,
it's bad. Okay, so one of the greatest things
about this show is for the first time in nearly
30 years, Peter Cullen and Frank Welker are working
together again, consistently. I'm sure that they've
worked on projects with each other within that
time period, but this is the first time that
they've both been back on a Transformers property.
And everybody was like, when everybody heard
the news about Frank, they were like, oh, no,
it's going to be the G one gravelly Megatron
voice and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. We're
not going to like it. It's so not because that
that G one Megatron voice Frank does in a higher
register, whereas this Megatron, the prime Megatron,
he does lower. So it's less strain on his vocal
cords. And it is so awesome. It does sound it
sounds. really good. It's a good Megatron voice.
He's got a lot of range. It's not gravelly, but
I don't think his vocal cords could handle that
at his age. No. His... and that's why he went
and changed it. It sounds enough like... But
it still sounds good. Right. It still sounds
enough like the G1 voice, but it's not the G1
voice. It is its own entity in this show. I love...
As much as I'm not a huge fan of Starscream simply
because of all the fangirls that fawn all over
that seeker It's crazy. I love Steve bloom is
Starscream Steve bloom is the number two voice
of Starscream second only to Chris Lada It's
just awesome how he does his inflections with
that Personally, I this is all gonna get edited
out anyway, cuz I can't have Mike not talk about
his show but Personally, I really like Tom Kenny
a Starscream and transformers animated not to
say, you know, Steve blue isn't good But hey,
come on. I gotta give Tom Kenny is do but no
I don't have a problem at all with the voice
casting on this show I think the voice casting
was great. I really like Who the hell's reanimator
um You know ratchet Jeffrey combs Jeffrey combs.
Damn it. Yeah, I know this guy. Yes. Yeah. No,
I really yeah the quite he was the question I
really well before that he was a reanimator right?
Back in the day, but no, I really like Jeffrey
combs. I really like I just like the voice Direction
here. I don't have a problem with that. I You
know, I'm just not as happy with some of the
other aspects of the show For me, I like it all
so far at this point. I can't wait like You want
to talk about a season cliffhanger? this season
cliffhanger was just jaw -dropping for me I do
like how all the cartoons these days seem to
be giving homage to the original voice cast.
You know, Larry Kenny on Thundercats, Michael
Bell and B .J. Warden and J .I. Joe, Welker and
Cullen here, Paulson and the new Turtles coming
out this year, next year. I like that they're
finally realizing that the old classic voices
are in some times, in some cases, the best. Right.
Yeah. So that's going to do it for the cartoons.
We're going to move on to the top five video
games. Think this is probably just gonna be me
Michael and Steve because I have things I want
to talk about, huh? I have things I have a list.
Oh, okay Well, I should go first because it's
not a numbered list. Okay. Well, what are your
picks for the way? I made this list is the my
top five games III well, it's not top five, but
I made my game list pretending I had a system
with two games that I'd be buying because I refused
to buy a system and start getting into video
games again because I was the biggest video game,
I was a video game nerd before video game nerds
were cool. Commodore 64 and television, Pong,
IBM. Atari 2600, Adventure, you were in that!
You were like this once I got to college I stopped
it because I knew it was taken away from my productivity
But if I had owned these systems, I would have
definitely been interested obviously in the typical
sports show games like MLB 11 the show of Madden
2011 WWE all -stars, but I would have found it
interesting to try out Mortal Kombat the new
one Star Wars Old Republic the Old Republic or
whatever it is. I definitely would be all about
that game They've released a couple new Zelda
and Sonic games that I'd be out for Call of Duty
Modern Warfare 3 and I would definitely be all
over it probably would be my favorite game of
the year if I had played it. GoldenEye 007 Reloaded.
So those would be the games I would be interested
in if I was playing video games these days. You
know I played the RPG versions of Knights of
the Old Republic 1 and 2 and I really enjoyed
those again as an RPG but couldn't get on board
or at least I haven't gotten on board yet for
the new one because it's a one of those massively
multiplayer online role it's a massively multiplayer
game and I know you can you can I think you can
play by yourself but it's just not the same I
don't think you're gonna be able to get through
it's kind of like World of Warcraft where the
certain areas you're just not gonna be able to
do by yourself you have to hit parties together
and I I just don't want to do that. I don't want
to get in a situation where I'm paying $19 .99
a month to play a game. That makes sense. Exactly.
Alright, so Michael, what is your number five
for games? My number five is... And this is sad
because I just haven't played a lot of games
lately. When I do play games, it's always on
the PC and I always play them for a long period
of time. I'll buy a big game and just play the
hell out of it. Like especially like role -playing
games like I mentioned but Something small that
I can get out of the way quietly during meetings
like number five angry birds Yeah, and it's weird
I I didn't believe the hype about angry birds
everyone's like oh I'm playing angry birds and
it's addictive and I'm thinking, you know, it's
another one of those You know throw the penguin
type games, you know how far can the penguin
fly? You know, and he bounces and he skips that
he hits a bomb and flies farther and it's like
his old flash based games you find on websites
and yeah, and I thought you know, this is dumb
Why would why would anybody play this and a buddy
of mine? It's like no, seriously got a download.
You got to try it and I downloaded it and for
the iPhone there is no You know, you can't get
the full version for free you can get the light
version And you can play. You have to pay for
the full version. Well, it's like 99 cents for
the full version, but I'm cheap. I'm not going
to pay 99 cents to watch the penguin fly. Right.
So but no, I started playing that and it was
addictive. And it's like, wow, I got one star
out of three. I bet I could get three. And I
just kept playing the damn thing. And I played
it until I got all, I think, like 20 screens
that you get for the free version. on the iphone
but i i played all of them for till three stars
and then there's another one called like angry
birds seasons and then there's seasonal for seasonal
screens and i played all of those and then there's
angry birds rio rio and i played all of those
and and arguably you know some of the seasons
ones are really really hard oh yes they are yeah
and some of the real ones are are kind of difficult
but i still got you know three stars on all those
but the It is it's addictive. It really is I
Don't want to say it's like a time suck I've
never sat down and played Angry Birds for four
hours in a row like I will some of these other
games I'll usually play Angry Birds when I'm
watching TV, honestly, really like well like
like, you know Okay, perfect example. We've mentioned
this several times throughout this episode watching
Disney Channel if there's an episode of like
Jesse or so random or whatever I'll have that
on his background noise and I'll be sitting there
focusing on a I won't focus on the TV but I'll
focus on the game I'll focus on Angry Birds while
that's playing in the background I look up okay
Angry Birds again Angry Birds yes I'll play Angry
Birds for maybe five Ten minutes at a time tops
and then I'll put it away and go do something
else, you know I can play it for about 30 to
45 minutes Wow Yeah, I see I've usually got a
board beat three stars within you know 10 15
minutes and well because I play off all three
of the different games though I don't just stick
with one version of like all the ones you mentioned
Rio seasons and the original I play all three
of them. So oh, yeah No, I I played all the way
through one then went to the next and then played
all through that went to the next and it's uh
it's like i really like more angry birds but
i'm just not willing to pay 99 cents again steve
what is your number five steve five yes okay
mine is spider -man edge of time oh interesting
that was a good one yes i know i didn't play
it but i saw a lot of video there was a large
marketing presence on this game it's pretty good
but uh it's it's not my favorite out of the spider
-man games i have another one that i think trumps
it um dimensions yeah um but the only thing i
don't like about it is there's a timed level
uh yeah and in towards the beginning And because
you're the original Spider -Man and then you're
the 2099 throughout the game You're trying to
save the 2099's life by destroying this robot
in the past that's actually killing him in the
future and You have like two minutes to destroy
every limb But you're also getting shot at and
have to defeat the guys so you don't get shot
down so it's damn near impossible i hate those
so i i was like to hell with this and i threw
the game to the side but i'm sure it didn't help
i was playing it on the wii with you know the
shitty controllers but yeah okay um it's a nice
thing about the pc versions of games is you can
usually download a trainer or something that
will let you cheat so you turn off the timer
invincible something like that i can't die I've
done that like, well, not so much that you can't
die with it. The timer's turned off. I mean,
you may get killed by the guys trying to keep
you from blowing up the bad guy's leg, but you
don't have two minutes to blow up the bad guy's
leg. You have as much time as you need. Yeah.
But you have to destroy every limb, which is
the fucked up part. But yeah, that'd be my fifth,
my number five game. Once you get started on
the arms. after blowing up both legs, then you
get defeated. That's like, God damn it. Now I
got it all over again. Yep. My number five is
DC Universe Online. I had been waiting and waiting.
I actually conversed with the people that were
working on this game through MySpace back in
2006. I've been waiting for this game forever.
I'm not a multiplayer game player at all. I do
the single player modes. And the first couple
tries of this, I said, screw it, I'm done. I
reinstalled it and I tried on the Superman side
starting in Metropolis and I liked it a little
bit better, but it's just too frustrating for
me. Do you not like, are you playing with other
people? I mean, it's supposed to be massive in
multiplayer. No, no, no. I mean, I realize it's
free so you could still. Do the massively multiplayer?
Yeah, no, I don't do the multiplayer crap. Okay
Michael what is your number four? Number four
is probably another Well, it is another mobile
game I don't know how familiar you guys are with
a little movie by Sam Raimi called army of darkness
I've heard of it, but I don't think I've ever
seen it God, you suck. No, seriously, you're
all supposed to chime in and go, that movie's
awesome! Anyway, yeah, hand over your geek card,
seriously. By now, you should have seen every
Bruce Campbell movie 15 times over. Army of Darkness,
again, it's a classic. It's a continuation of
The Evil Dead 2. It should say it's the third
of the Evil Dead trilogy. But the game I'm referring
to is Army of Darkness Tower Defense. It's a
free game that you can get on the iPhone. If
you're familiar with Tower Defense? Kind of?
Maybe? No. Tower Defense games are a genre in
and of themselves where basically you set up
defenses between an entrance and an exit. And
bad guys come in the entrance and they leave
out the exit. Your job is to make sure they don't
leave. However many get out the exit, I guess
you get so many tries before you die. And you
keep building up your defenses, level after level,
making sure that they don't get out. And this
game is kind of the same. And that, you know,
there's a straight shot. They come in through
the front gate of the castle, and if they reach
the end of the castle, which is where the Necronomicon
lies, then you lose. Or if you die before they
get to the Necronomicon, you lose. And as you
kill more guys, you score more points and get
more gold. As you get more gold, you can build
more defenses. Yeah, but the cool thing about
this game is that there's tower defense. I mean,
a lot of people like tower defense in and of
itself, but... The cool thing about this game
is it's chock full of Army of Darkness references.
There's a lot of sound clips here. The humor
from the movies shines through in the game. They
clearly put a lot of thought and planning into
this. I believe the studio that built it is the
same one that built Angry Birds. Rovio? Yeah,
but just a really, really good game. But I played
that I mean that was another one of those where
I would steal away and play it for five or ten
minutes at a time and some of the later later
levels Are literally, you know 20 minutes long.
Yeah yeah and they're they're hard at first it's
like there's no challenge here then why am i
even bothering with this and by the time you
get to like level 50 it's my god i'm never gonna
get this i'm never gonna get the evil ash to
nestle in necronomicon again but but no i mean
if you have an iphone uh it's free run out and
get it right now you'll love it steve what is
your number four my number four is Spider -Man
Shattered Dimensions. I got this for the Xbox
360. I like the fact that you get to play as
four different Spider -Men from different time
periods. And you have the various voices that
have, or actors who have voiced Spider -Man over
the years. Which was quite nice to hear those
in there. You get to fight is the 2099 the amazing
spider -man the noir spider -man Which I hate
his levels with a passion What's that that play
style the whole you know sneaking around in the
dark and not being caught type play style I dig
that it's actually more difficult than what you'd
think especially when you get to the bosses Because
Hammerhead was a boss that in that one. Yeah,
he was a bitch Both times but um Cuz you gotta
fight him as a mid boss and then again at the
end so but um and then you get to fight as the
venom spider -man, but Yeah, I just I love how
the game plays Granted I'm not as far as my wife
is currently at the game because one day she
just decided to sit down and play it And, yeah,
I was too busy playing Arkham City, so... Oh,
you have that on two separate consoles? What?
The Arkham City and Spider -Man. No, they're
both on the 360. Oh, so you can't play them at
the same time? No. Oh, see now, yeah, Chrissy
and I game together, you know? She would play
Spider -Man while I'm at work, or if she was
stuck, she'd be like, uh, here you go. Yeah,
and then I'd beat the boss and then she'd go
on with the rest of it. Yeah My my number four
is a game that I've only seen video of because
as I've said before I Three of these I've only
seen video of two of them. I've actually played
Uncharted 3 It looks so amazing. I would love
to play that. I don't know if it's out for PC
I'm not gonna look it up at this point in time,
but it looks so great it does look very pretty
yeah it looks awesome uh michael what is your
number three uh number three was mass effect
three is that out yet i'm sorry mass effect two
no it's not out yet i'm a dumb ass i wish mass
effect three were out because from what i've
read mass effect three corrects all the problems
that mass effect two had and the problems with
Mass Effect 2 related directly to the fact that
it wasn't Mass Effect 1. Yeah, they really dumbed
down Mass Effect 2. They took out a lot of the
RPG elements. They just really... I don't want
to say they ruined it, because I still play the
game. But whereas the first Mass Effect gave
you a lot of options on how to outfit your characters,
Where you went in the galaxy there was a lot
more to do, you know, there's a lot more open
-ended to this and to do this to the game Whereas
Mass Effect 2 Very linear very here's where you
start. This is where you went. Don't even try
to explore it was it was annoying in that sense
and It's like I couldn't change the armor for
my guys part of the first game was finding new
armor getting new stuff leveling up this game
not so much it's it's uh the best you can do
is change the color of their armor and you only
get two choices for each guy black or white well
no actually it's more like they're like brown
they can either have white and black or brown
and orange which is like their their team colors
yeah and i just don't know I play the game because
I really really liked Mass Effect 1 and because
of this game is the reason why I didn't play
the sequel to Dragon Age I really enjoyed the
first Dragon Age game but I heard that you know
through through reviews and such that they dumbed
down the second Dragon Age the same way they
dumbed down the second Mass Effect because it's
the same studio that makes the game yeah so I
didn't even bother with the second Dragon Age
I wanted to play it I just Couldn't bring myself
to do it because I hated Mass Effect 2 so much.
So why is Mass Effect 2 number 3? Because again,
like I said, I only play a few games a year and
You know, I'll play them for a long time I'll
play them until I'm just done playing them and
this is the third game that I played that year
Yeah, so yeah, not my favorite game, but I played
it Steve what is your number three my number
three? is back to the future of the game. I have
yet to get a hold of that. How is that? I liked
it. I mean, it's it's a little bit of kind of
you got to run around town, kind of, you know,
click on various things, kind of. It's almost
like a solve a mystery type thing. What's the
genre though? What type of game is it? It's a
point and click game. It's a point and click.
but it's got some graphical elements and then
there's points where you gotta click and make
them do certain things like for instance one
level you gotta make somebody leave the room
and then you gotta search something real quick
but you gotta know what you're going after or
you know or quick enough or you get caught or
you know just that kind of stuff so but it was
pretty neat from what I did play awesome My number
three this is probably something Kevin's gonna
be able to chime in on from what he's seen of
it again This is I've only seen video of this,
but it looks awesome Call of Duty Modern Warfare
3 I've actually beat this game. Oh, you've played
it. Okay. I wasn't sure my roommate bought it
and the First of all, the visual on this game
is amazing. The graphics are incredible. I was
a little disappointed that we literally, he bought
it because, you know, he thought it was something
we could play together or whatnot. He was trying
to get me into it. And we started the campaign,
which we were just trading off like when someone
dies, it basically picks you up exactly right
there. So when one person died, we'd hand off
the controller and then I'd play it. And if I
died, I'd hand it off. But we did it that way
and we literally beat the entire game in like
less than six hours. And I was like, what? It's
over? Oh. Yeah, the the plot line of the story
from what I've heard from Mike the Birdman Dot
is the outcome is not very satisfying. Well,
it's just not satisfying because it doesn't take
long enough. Like it's intense. You feel like
you're in it. You're getting to know all the
people you are because you play as both, you
know, American and Russian individuals. And you
kind of switch back and forth before the storyline.
And just as you're getting into the storyline
and learning the people, it's like game over.
You've beat it. And it's like, wait a second.
And this is one reason why I can't play the video
games is because then we tried to play the online,
just play against a million different people
and kill everybody. And that was the most not
fun experience I've ever had in my life. Like
it's impossible to play against people online
unless you somehow like get to the level that
they are as far as like a There's like a status
number or like a level number I sound like an
idiot because I don't know what I'm talking about.
But The higher the number you are the more weapons
you get to have you can hold two weapons at once
and all this stuff So you can't even compete
with the people like you literally die every
time you respond. Yeah You end up getting blown
up with a rocket launcher far more often than
you'd like until you get to the point where you
can hold your own rocket launcher. And by then
everyone else is that much more powerful than
you are. And I'm not willing to take that time.
I had the same thing with Bioshock 2 when I played
online. And the same thing, they would grant
you levels the more kills you got. And the more
levels you got, the more accessories you could
have or the more weapons. you don't even see
where you're getting killed from like it shows
you a and actually every time you die it shows
you a replay of how you died and it's like where
did that person come from we bought the game
we played it for six hours beat it and it has
sat on the shelf since Yeah, so the 13 year old
who plays the game night and day who knows the
map inside and out is whipping your ass because
I don't have the time to dedicate to be good
at this. One of the things I loved about Modern
Warfare 3 of seeing video of it, it had one of
the best ad campaigns of the year. uh... every
commercial i would see it's it's the veteran
that brings in they you know they show an actual
you know actual actor being the veteran they
show a newbie spawning in and the newbie eventually
called the becomes you know a veteran self and
i i just thought that was such a cool ad campaign
that was the one with the uh... uh... also named
david bell From Stargate universe. There's some
very cool parts of the game though There's some
parts where like you're in an airplane and all
sudden like a window gets blown out our door
gets blown out in it And you're literally slow
motion like going through the air But you can
still shoot people as you're kind of flipping
around like you see in the movies It's there's
some cool cool as parts you're underwater sometimes
you're you know, there's very cool parts But
like I said, it just wasn't long enough. Yeah,
right Michael what is your number two? My number
two will be portal to portal three. No kidding
portal to portal to Had a similar issue with
I should say a similar issue to the modern warfare
in that it was only six hours long Well, you
know six six somewhere around there was it was
it's just a short game But there's a lot of humor
There's a lot of story. It's a really funny,
funny game. And it makes you think. It didn't
make me think, I don't want to say as much as
the first game, but the first game was only four
hours long. But again, really funny and really
cute. But the second game returns you to Aperture
Labs. I won't say like 50 years after the original
game and and nature has overtaken it and You're
basically walking around and in the same areas
that you were in in the first game But they but
the you know, you had a better graphics engine.
Everything looks cleaner It's it's just amazing
and to look up and see like a hole in the ceiling
With the light shining through and the leaves
on the mall, you know the plants and everything
It's just a really really cool effect because
you've been here before Right. And they get into
the history of Aperture Labs and Cave Johnson
who is just an amazing, amazing personality.
He's the guy who founded and ran Aperture Labs
up until his death. He has his voice recorded.
Throughout the the the later levels so as you're
walking through you can hear him speaking and
he's like I'm sending all this down on tape so
that Future generations will be able to hear
my greatness, you know, just really really funny
stuff And I've put like online I've made references
to life gives you lemons and that's his whole
spiel You know when life gives you lemons don't
take lemonade, you know, you do You give them
lemons back and you demand to see life's manager
You tell them you're gonna take these lemons
back or I'm gonna burn your house down with the
lemons It's just really funny stuff. I guess
you had to be there. I don't really do it. Yeah
pretty much I'm gonna have my lab guys create
a combustible lemon and I'm gonna burn your house
down. Yeah, it's just It's it's again. You gotta
be in that in that context in the game, but just
really good really short It's longer than, you
know, it took me, let's say, twice as long to
beat Portal 2 than it was Portal 1. There's a
lot more story there. You learn more about Gladys,
who's the main antagonist, or was the main antagonist
in the first game, and that ends up being kind
of a sub -boss in this game. It won't give too
much away. But no, it's just, it's really funny.
It's really interesting. Again, I didn't think
as hard as I did. The first game because the
first game I was still getting my feet wet trying
to figure out how to how to make portals work
Thinking with portals as they call it. Yeah,
but this time around I breezed just breezed right
through it I didn't I didn't barely think at
all now There's a multiplayer version of the
game that allows you to play was as one of two
robots so each you can play with one other guy
basically online and The idea there is you've
got two ingress portals and two egress portals
going on at the same time. And so it's like,
hey, how cool would that be? How many times have
you wished you could have that? Multiplayer is
for people who aren't antisocial. That's my stance
on multiplayer. No, I like multiplayer. I like
Unreal Tournament multiplayer. I like Bioshock
2 multiplayer to a certain extent. Games where
I can get in and play with other people I enjoy
that but I did not play the multiplayer here
and basically I was afraid that I'd end up in
a room or playing a game with someone who had
already beaten all the levels and I would just
get a walkthrough and he would point and go put
one here put one there jump here here you know
and I just didn't want to do that and I get the
feeling that I might be missing out on some more
really truly funny moments and some more a storyline
that I would pick up from the multiplayer. Right.
Because the multiplayer picks up where the single
player game lets off. Okay. Yeah, so it's like,
well, I kind of feel like I'm not doing myself
any justice here, or I'm doing myself a grave
injustice for not playing the multiplayer. And
a lot of people tell me it's really good, but
I just haven't played it yet. I probably will
eventually. Eventually. Once I get done with
my number one game. Aha. Steve, what is your
number two? Two is DC Universe Online. Wow, you
like it a lot better than Mike. Yeah, well, he
bailed and uninstalled it and then after he...
We've been over this. Why is it your number two?
Anyways, I like it because you get to create
your own character. You get to have the freedom
to kind of just fly around and... Do whatever
mission you are at the correct level to do it
at I also like the fact that when you get high
enough level the people that were beating your
ass when you were on a lower level and killing
you on PvP And if you were playing PvP you can
go kick their ass back Because I did that the
other night But um But yeah, I just like how
that that whole environment works. Yes, it is
irritating at points playing the game, but it's
free. So unless you want to pay for the extra
stuff. So unless so I would say that it's at
least a good game to try out and doesn't cost
you nothing. Exactly. Before I get to my number
two, I have to. Make this statement I have been
playing Grand Theft Auto for for the number of
years now that has been my main shoot him up
first person shooter that type of style of game.
And our buddy, Spade of the Bolt Matrix, actually
gifted me on Steam Saints Row the third. This
is my first Saints Row game that I've played.
And even though it does have the generic Grand
Theft Auto style of, you know, go buy property,
go do these missions, go do those missions, this
game starts off with a bang because you're robbing
a bank and then you're going through a skydiving
mission and it is just awesome. I'm not too far
into the game right now. I think I'm up to like
the sixth mission or so But just seeing the world
seeing the graphics the game has and all the
different things you can do. It's very very awesome
so drumroll, please Michael what is your number
one? I used to be an adventurer like you, but
then I took an arrow to the knee What the hell
is this arrow to the knee thing? I used to blah
blah blah until I took an arrow to the knee!
You know, anyone who says that should take a
scrotum to the chin. Skyrim! Skyrim is my number
one. Uh, yeah, I've done nothing but play this
game for the last, what, three, four weeks? This
is, uh, yeah. Since it came out, pretty much.
Basically since it came out and I went out and
bought it immediately. I mean, I... Again, I
was mentioned that I play I'll get a game and
I'll play it until I can't play it anymore and
Years ago. I first played Morrowind Which was
Elder Scrolls 3 and just played as a death played
it for like six months straight and then they
kept releasing Add -on packs and then a couple
years back. I want to say 2009 Oblivion came
out and they had at least one expansion pack
for that the frozen frost and shivering aisles
and that was a Really really great game And again
played it for six months straight. It was just
just killed it this game It's in the same vein
It differs in some ways But it's still It's still
very open -ended. I mean literally you have a
continent that you can wander across and There's
maybe a thousand different Locations on this
continent that you can visit. Yeah, and almost
all of them have a quest tied to it There are
six or seven main towns and some of them are
big I have a castle some of them are smaller
and just it's just like a village But every one
of them has people who will say hey, can you
do something for me? You know or you know, even
if something small like, you know, I'm I'm a
farmer Can you go out in my field and harvest
wheat and bring it back to me? And I'll pay you
for each each, you know, I didn't bring back
There there is a main storyline, but you don't
even have to follow it Right. You can play the
main storyline or you can buy a house in town
and just do the blacksmith thing There are there
are people that start the game by going out and
hunting animals, getting their skin, harvesting
their hide, bringing it back to the blacksmith
shop, turning that hide in the leather, taking
the leather and creating leather armor, then
running up to the castle where the enchanter
lives, and then you enchant that armor with a
low level enchantment, take that armor back to
the blacksmith, sell it back to them, And that
increases your, you know, your hunting skills,
your armoring skills, your smithing skills, increases
your enchanting skills and your merchant skills.
So you're cranking up every, I mean, you can
do this, this cycle, you know, endlessly until
you've maxed out all of your stats. If you so
choose or you can wander around and just shoot
things and you know I've seen video of people
who just wander in town and start punching small
children You have that option you you don't have
to follow the main storyline You don't have to
follow any storyline for a long time there a
few weeks. I just wandered around the countryside
Going into bandit strongholds and clearing them
out. Yeah, I mean it's If anything the flaw here
is it doesn't give you enough direction Right,
it doesn't say you have to do this, you know,
and again as much as Steve hates the time limit
You know, there are no time limits here It's
like I would always be happier if they say you
have to do this Objective within two days Because
literally you can if you so chose you could rent
a room and sleep For weeks of time Use bed, you
know eight hours later use bed. Yeah, that's
it You actually get bonuses for sleeping unless
you're a werewolf in which case you don't get
bonuses for sleeping, but you can still sleep
Yeah, you can be a werewolf. You can be a vampire
You can you can play the game as a mage you can
play the game as an assassin You can you know
depends on what skills you chose to build up.
Yeah, it's just It's very, very diverse. There's
a lot to do here. There's a lot of different
ways to do it. I, like I said, I've been playing
the game nonstop, have not finished the main
storyline. There's like six different guilds
on the continent. I've only gotten to the top
of two of them. And at some point I'm going to,
you know, plug in my new computer and actually
play it with all the high res on. yeah, because
right now I'm playing everything at low res and
with no anti alias saying and just You know it
runs but yeah, but I mean, this is a beautiful
beautiful game. It's amazing. It's like true
to life it's kind of like you know that the The
video that you've seen the videos that you've
seen of uncharted. Yeah It's it's prettier than
that It's amazing because you can stand there
and look up at the at the peaks The snowy peaks
and you can see the snow Blowing in the wind
and off the peaks and around and kind of billowing,
right? Yeah, it looks real and even in in areas
that couldn't possibly be real it still so like
like, you know mountain fortresses built up the
side of a mountain and You know, it's just things
that couldn't possibly exist in the real world
Look real they look amazing and I haven't been
able to take advantage of that in the fullest
because my machine just isn't powerful enough.
Yes. I'm gonna go with my number one because
I know Steve is going to have more to say about
this so I'm gonna let him go last on this one.
My number one, again, I've been watching a video
walkthrough even though it's one of those cheesy
commentary video walkthroughs and the guy kind
of pisses me off when he's commenting during
like cutscenes when i'm not actually being able
to hear what the hell the people are saying uh...
but uh... batman arkham city is is is my number
one i love how the game looks i love how the
mechanics are i i don't think i'm gonna be able
to get this for the pc silly because the controls
on it are so all awkward i know i could get a
you know usb controller to fix that issue but
Yeah, I just prefer watching people play this
game because this game looks so freaking awesome.
How about that voice cast? Oh, yes Yes Kevin
Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise as Batman and
Joker Tara strong has taken over as Harley. She
does a decent Harley. I like it It's it's better
than some of the other people that have done
Harley outside of Arlene Sorkin Arlene Sorkin
will always be Harley Quinn, but Tara is a is
a close second So Steve, what is your number
one? Batman Arkham City Surprise surprise. He
actually played it so I watched it, I've seen
it, it's not like I've never seen the damn thing.
The story for it is freaking awesome. And I love
the fact that unlike Arkham Asylum, where in
Arkham Asylum you defeat the guys, they don't
come back. So once you beat the game, you're
done. Yeah. There's nothing more. In Arkham City...
That can't be canon though. What? Well, I mean
you make it sound like he's going to kill mr.
Freeze you can't you can't kill mr. Freeze Well,
no, but you you defeat him, but I'm saying like
in Arkham Asylum It's like you're it's almost
like a typical game where it's Arkham City Like
your your bosses stay pretty much where they
were like whatever you last saw them as that's
what they are but The guys that have guns or
the guys that are running around town Those guys
don't go away. They come back Yeah, you defeat
them they come back or they call reinforcements.
So I mean it's It's quite interesting to see
that that take on it I love the main storyline
and I love the fact that there's nine side plots
Wow and You you you go through the main sequence
fighting your regular bosses, but then they have
like the side the side games are what There the
side missions are what hints at the next game?
Like you have Arkham world well like you have
as real following Batman around and you have
to find the symbols and then That alludes to
you know him saying we will meet again soon,
and then you see you meet hush Who you know spoiler
alert? Looks like Bruce Wayne And then there's
a scarecrow part where you see orders for Dr.
Crane, and then you see various other things
out of building. You see Croc. So a lot of it's
foreshadowing a future game that they are not
going to confirm right now. But yeah, the whole
game's awesome. And then to add... More to it
you get to play in a side mission of Catwoman.
You get to download Extra missions you get the
bat or the Robin and Nightwing skins and you
get eight Batman skins Really? Yes. Yeah, including
a Batman Beyond I use the Batman Beyond skin
the animated series one and the Batman incorporated
more right? Yeah for five bucks you can download
all of them okay and you the batman incorporated
one's free but the other seven you get to you
pay five bucks and you get all of them that's
not bad and you can play with them they they
just released another code where you can play
with them from the start of the game instead
of actually having to beat it first which is
what i had to do yeah you've beaten it like four
different times now three times the second time
i crashed the save game Did you get all the riddler
symbols? No because and you can't and the riddler
no listen the riddler is the one of the bosses
in the side missions yeah you can't defeat him
or get a certain you have to get a certain amount
of riddler trophies or riddles answered in order
to get the next hostage or to get to him so you
have to get all 400 of them to get to 400 Yes,
yeah, there's a lot. You know, I keep seeing
like on webcomics, they'll allude to it or something
like Penny Arcade or David Willis' comic. They'll
allude to how difficult it is to get all of these.
I didn't realize there was 400. Yes, there's
400 and you have to have Catwoman to get a certain
percentage of them. Wow. If you try and pick
them up as Batman, it electrocutes you and then
you hear Riddler go, uh -uh -uh, that's not for
you. Yeah, and it's just you know There's some
of them that they're so insanely impossible to
get Yeah, like I've been sitting there trying
to figure them out, and I'm like I and I have
the strategy guy And I'm like I still don't fucking
have a clue, so I just I gave up. I'm like I'll
call it good Yeah, been there. Yeah, I've defeated
the rest of it, so I mean that's that that counts
for something game plus mode Is a bitch. I can't
even get past the beginning. What's that? You
beat the game on normal or hard mode and it unlocks
game plus, which is basically everybody is insanely
more difficult to battle. Like hell mode. They
actually think intelligently. The guys you're
fighting against and you enter the city as Bruce
Wayne handcuffed and you're being attacked by
eight of penguins guys. Nice. They move fast
enough that by the time you're clubbing one guy,
you're getting clubbed in the back of the head.
So pretty much you're dead. And you can't jump.
You can't do any of that. No, you just walking
pace. Severe handicap. Yes, until you break the
handcuffs, which you have to defeat two or three
of them to do so. Wow. But yeah, but yeah, I
love that game. That would be my number one.
So there you have it folks. Those are the games
of the year. We're gonna take a break and we'll
be back after this. All right, so we are back
and we are gonna start the top 10 films. The
reason why we've increased from top 5 to top
10 because there were so many films this year
that each of us have liked. For me, I'm going
to mention really quickly the ones I want to
see that I haven't now unlike last year all of
all the ones that are on my list I have actually
seen or is last year I was going to see Tron
the next day after the recording but these are
films that I really want to see and I can't wait
till they either go to Redbox or Netflix Abduction,
Adjustment Bureau, Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Elite,
Real Steel, In Time and The Muppets I just haven't
had the extra cash or the time to go see Any
of these at this point in time so great. That's
super eight. I want to see super eight, too So
Kevin, what is your number ten? You have honorable
mentions for I just want to real quick mention
ones I haven't seen so people don't think I'm
silly, but I haven't seen girl dragon tattoo
Pirates of the Caribbean, Colombiana, Det, Extremely
Loud and Incredibly Close, Source Code, or Anonymous,
or Tinker Tailor, Soldier Spy. So I haven't seen
those, so I couldn't judge them. But number 10,
you just want me to go 10 through 1? No, I know.
We're each going to do it like we've been doing
it, but just make it brief. OK. Number 10 is
Crazy Stupid Love. Best romantic comedy of the
year. Steve Carell was awesome. And it was a
good movie. Awesome. Michael, what is your number
10? I saw Pirates 4 with my boy and kind of regretted
bringing him because it's not really a movie
for kids. No, it's not. Steve, what is your number
10? 10 is just go with it. I like Adam Sandler
movies. Granted, it's not one of his best, but
it's better than that piece of shit that came
out in November. Agreed. Wait, which was the
piece of shit in November? Jack and Jill. Oh,
yeah, okay, yeah. Anything's better than that.
Hell, Revenge of the Fallen is better than that
movie. I wouldn't go that far. For me, I have
one honorable mention. Simply because it didn't
make my list because after I watched it, I felt
like I wanted my dollar six. rental money back
from Redbox. The change up, it's basically Freaky
Friday with best friend guy buddies where they
each want each other's lives and then by the
end they realize they want their own lives back.
It was okay, I like some of the humor in it but
it's not top 10. It's what? I could have told
you not to watch that. Well I did. My number
10 is friends with benefits. This was, it was
fairly unique. It was, it was decent. It was
alright, I don't know. What's your number nine
Kevin? I wanted to put this higher, but I just
couldn't, but just a great movie, a great franchise
so far. Number nine for me is Sherlock Holmes,
Game of Shadows. The dialogue is a notch above
any other movie that's been out in recent years.
It has some really cool special effects scenes
and Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are great
in it, so Sherlock Holmes, number nine. I didn't
realize that was out yet. Yeah, it came out last
month, right? Yes. Or was it this month? That
was last month. It was earlier this month. It
came out this month. Yeah, it must have been
recently. Yeah. Well, yeah, I almost slept through
the first one. My wife did sleep through the
first one. The first one was excellent. First
one was great. Second one's better. Michael,
what's your number nine? Cars two. Again another
movie that I went to go see with my boys. This
is where we found out that Gavin could not sit
through a 3d movie And then I just wasn't all
that impressed with this is the first Pixar movie
that I haven't completely fallen in love with
I Was just really really shocked, but I mean
it's nice. There's a certain amount of merchandising
there, but Yeah, again was disappointed Steve
what about you? What's your number nine? My number
nine is Transformers Dark of the Moon. Only nine?
Yeah. This is my reasoning. After getting through
the last film, my expectations were extra low.
And then I just plain didn't give a damn this
time around. And I left the theater thinking...
Yeah, I just, I don't care. And I think the other
reason why Steve, and this is, and you can correct
me if I'm wrong in this assumption, I think the
other reason why Steve and I might be a little
bit down on the Transformers films simply because
with ATTF, we've been reporting on the news of
the films since they, you know, since we, you
know, since we started podcasting in 2008. So,
you know, it's just one of those things where
that news coverage really just bears you down
after a while. My number nine is actually something
I forgot about and I had to add in and I changed
out what I originally had but I'm a fan of Jason
Statham movies just because He is a fairly decent
action star and I like the mechanic. I thought
that I thought it was a pretty decent movie Granted
all of his films. It's him doing the same thing
over and over again pretty much, but I liked
the mechanic I thought it was very very well
done What about you, Kevin? What's your number
eight? Number eight would be the Muppets. Only
number eight? Yes, number eight. The Muppets
was great. I thought Disney might do something
bad with this, but they didn't. They had many
great homages, new songs, classic songs, great
cameos like the traditional Muppet movies had,
sentimental Muppet movies or Muppet moments.
It was expertly done. Hats off to the people
that brought the Muppets back and did a good
job with it Awesome Michael, what about you?
What's your number eight? Actually, I want to
say real quick that I haven't seen the Muppets,
but I really really wanted to I Number eight
for me is Conan the barbarian the new one with
Jason Momoa Saw it in 3d Was not terribly disappointed
It wasn't fantastic, but it was it did bring
it Yeah Steve what about you number eight My
number eight is and I just had it cuz damn things
scrolled up Pirates of the Caribbean on stranger
tides just because I like the Pirates franchise
It wasn't bad. It wasn't bad. I I mean it had
some of the feeling of the first film and I feel
that they could have drawn out the the blackbeard
thing a little bit longer, but It was a good
movie like it wasn't it wasn't Bad or anything,
but I mean it wasn't the best one of the Pirates
films, but it wasn't bad either It definitely
by the end let up to The fifth and sixth movie
and they're gonna be shooting back -to -back
so it has uncoupled itself from a lot of the
earlier storylines Yeah It's still it's still
somewhat connected, but there's only three reoccurring
cast from the first from the first three films
so My number eight is the only one that was a
TV movie premiere that got released on DVD Phineas
and Ferb across the second dimension I was surprised
Phineas and Ferb did not make your number one
cartoon. Yes, I Love this movie. This movie is
so awesome. Not only is it it is a completely
independent story to the television series It's
not just four episodes put back to back to back
Michael Wilson uh... you said that originally
when the news first came out about i said that's
a possibility it so it would be horrible if that
happened i didn't say all this is going to be
this way since it's not as i'd say that uh...
but yes it isn't for across second -dimension
check that out uh... step kevin what is your
number seven i'm have a tie for number seven
uh... first off the mortals uh... by the guys
that did three hundred definitely the most gory
bloody movie I've seen in a while outside of
like horror and thrasher films but there were
some epic death scenes in this movie and when
the gods came down to play it was kind of scary
but that was a good movie and I am number four
it was a very unique concept it's nice to see
some things that aren't remakes and sequels and
stuff in Hollywood and I am number four delivered
on that and I'm hopefully Looking forward to
see if they do something else with that. Because
it seems like there was more story that could
be told. So, I Am Number Four and Immortals for
number seven. We'll probably have I Am Number
Five as the sequel. Is it... is it MI? No, it's...
I Am? I Am. I Am Number Four. He is number four.
Oh! I Am Number Four! Oh, okay. You know what?
I... Didn't even bother to go see that. I thought
that looked like... it was a little too uh uh
you know chick flicky oh no i am number four
oh no it's not no that was action that was really
cool this is a guy that's getting hunted down
by these uh things because he has like a special
ability and they've already killed the three
people before him you know he's the fourth on
their list yeah i i wanted my dollar 27 back
from red box after renting that because why I
spent the first 30 minutes of the film and I
was like, oh god, it's another alien movie, lovely.
Eject. Not at all. Anyway. Michael, what is your
number seven? Number seven was Green Lantern.
Why? Oh, you know what? I probably saw maybe
a dozen movies this year. There are at least
so many, it's kind of like my video games, you
know, I didn't like Mass Effect 2, but it's still
on my list. No, I liked Green Lantern to a certain
extent. I really, I like Ryan Reynolds as an
actor. I like the special effects here. I think
they could have done things a little bit better.
I think the animated Green Lantern movie did
things a little bit better. But yeah, yeah, especially
where on the story, but I think they tried to
cater to too many You know, too many entities
here. They tried to go in too many directions
and they lost sight of what they were really
trying to do. But, you know, it was probably
the least favorite of the summer superhero movies
that I saw. But, you know, it wasn't awful. It
could have been. I've seen worse, right? Yeah,
yeah. What about you, Steve? What's your number
seven? Limitless Which which is a action film
Cannot remember the guy's name, but I know the
Cooper yeah, and you have Robert De Niro in it
as well and Cooper has he's a struggling writer
down in the dumps and then He's offered this
pill that unlocks a hundred percent of your brain
It makes him hyper intelligent to the point he
finishes his book in three days and then manages
to do stocks and all that kind of crap. The story
is him being hunted down and blackmailed. I was
a little disappointed with that one just because
I felt like it turned into more of an addiction
movie. Yeah, it kind of did. I like the concept.
I got that impression from the preview. Is that,
oh, I gotta keep taking it over and over and
over again. I thought, yeah, I don't really know
if I want to watch that. Well, and then the fact
that he had to drink the other guy's blood was
kind of stupid. Gonna eat your brain to gain
your powers. It was a good concept. I just think
they could have done a little bit better with
it. Yeah, I mean, but they were on the right
track with that. It was something new. Yeah.
Yeah. My number seven is Cars 2. I love the Cars
franchise, I love the Mater's Tall Tales stuff,
and I just thought this was a natural progression
to the original film. The voice cast, the ones
that returned anyway, because obviously, sadly,
Paul Newman has left us, but just the overall
stuff that Pixar was doing with this movie, I
really loved it. I thought it was a great, great
animated film. You know, I think if they would
have stuck a little bit closer to the original
formula, as in having a movie about Lightning
McQueen, not a movie about Mater. There's lots
of coverage of Mater on the Disney Channel, having
a whole movie about him, and shunting the main
character, who I believe is the main character,
off into like a B -side. We don't see him very
often. That's kind of where they derailed themselves.
It stopped being a... It stopped being, you know,
a buddy movie or an ensemble piece with a lot
of great characters and started being more about
Mater bumbling through the spy agency. I just
didn't, I didn't enjoy that. Gotta admit though,
Michael Caine is Finn McMissile. That was awesome.
Yeah, he was better in Goldmember. Oh, stop it.
As a spy, right? What is your number six, Kevin?
You know, this this year had definitely had its
share of superhero movies. We had like X -Men,
Thor, Green Lantern, Green Hornet. Anyway, but
we had a lot of superhero movies. And to me,
one of them was Miles, heads and feet and tails
and all kinds of stuff above all the rest of
them. And that was Captain America, the first
Avenger. This movie was blew me away. I would
actually say that this is the best superhero
superhero movie outside of the Dark Knight. franchise
of the entire last decade. I loved this movie,
and I am not a superhero buff, but Captain America
the First Avenger was awesome. And it's only
six. I know. See now, the rest of my lineup is
pretty much all superhero movies, and it being
the best, it's a lot higher up the list. So what's
your number six? Puss in Boots. That's a superhero
movie. Oh, no, it's not I'm just saying that
I get a bunch coming up but listen boots I honestly
that I I wasn't expecting much but we took the
boys to see it in 3d and Gavin paid attention
to the whole thing Amazingly, but it was so good.
It was just truly truly funny and there was a
lot of sight gags there, but there was Yeah,
yeah, I mean I really recommend this one. It's
really really good I'm gonna think of it. It
probably should have been higher up on the list,
but they're not there What's your number six
Steve my next one is tower heist and I'd like
it. That's another one. I want to say I like
it because it kind of gives me like that Oceans
11 type feel to it It also gives you that 1980s
Eddie Murphy comedy feel as well. Honestly, I
didn't really like Eddie Murphy all that much
in the movie. I could have done without him.
You could have used just about anybody for that
part. I didn't like that character, but I like
the fact that the whole plot revolves around
this rich tycoon that's embezzled everybody's
money. And nobody knows where it's hidden until
close to the end and then they end up pulling
a fast one on this guy and Ben Stiller character
takes the fall Right, but it was it was it was
funny but it was it was a funny action film Right.
Yeah My number six is fast five I know Kevin
doesn't like the franchise because it's street
racing and all this and all that but Fast Five
is the changing point of the franchise where
it's moving more into heist films and usually
when there's a year that a fast movie comes out
for me it's what starts my spring slash summer
blockbuster. Uh, and I just absolutely loved
it. It was great. So Kevin, what is your number
five? Well, that's an easy act to follow because
now no matter what movie I say, it's going to
sound legit. Um, my number five is, uh, the adjustment
bureau. Um, This was a year full of unique and
interesting films which we don't usually get
in Hollywood and Matt Damon is gold as always
and it's just not your typical film and I thought
it was really well done. So if you are a fan
of unique story ideas that you haven't heard
or seen already, you should check out the Adjustment
Bureau. I feel like I was just LeVar Burton on
the Reading Rainbow. Michael, what's your number
five? My number five is X -Men First Class. Again,
another superhero movie I really enjoyed. I liked
that it was a period piece. They kind of took
it back to the 60s. And you just don't get enough
of those. Unless they're on TV being canceled.
Actually, there was a scene in X -Men First Class
where it looked like they actually went back
to the Playboy Club. It was the Hellfire Club.
Right, but I mean it was clearly modeled on the
Playboy Club and it was Yeah, I mean it was a
good movie. They good characters. I Anticipate
a sequel that I will be going to see X -Men second
class Second class. Well, it would be interesting
because if you consider it the if you consider
those characters being the first class was I
don't right because I mean there's only one first
class and they didn't really bring those people
to the forefront in this movie, but if they did
have the second year, you know, the second year's
end, you know, I could see them holding a little
bit truer to the comic. Yeah. Steve, what is
your number five? X -Men First Class. What did
you like about that? I just, I liked some of
the portrayals of some of the characters. I agree
that that's not... the first class for many of
them. But it was more enjoyable than X3. Oh yeah,
X3 was a nightmare. I couldn't watch that. And
Wolverine was kind of hit or miss at points.
Yeah, I actually didn't have high hopes for this
movie, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Yeah,
as was I. I think they've all been good. And
my number five is Limitless. I was more captivated
by Limitless than I was Inception. That's retarded.
I'm just kidding. Well, you're retired. Limitless,
yes, it does turn into a little bit of an addiction
movie, but I like where the ending went because
that was something that I wasn't expecting because
I thought he was going to end up dying. I honestly
did. I thought he was going to die of a drug
overdose from taking too much of the stuff or
withdrawals. But I like where the ending of that
film went. So Kevin, what is your number four?
Sounded like a broken record, but another unique
and breath of fresh air movie here. Number four
for me is In Time. It was just good. I love the
concept for this. It's a great idea. For some
reason, I don't understand it, but Justin Timberlake
is good at everything he does. And this movie
just had so many things to watch for. It was
like I found myself feeling like I was watching
Back to the Future and looking for all these
different things that the people had thought
up to put in the movie. It was just a cool concept
and I really enjoyed the film. I thought it was
really well done and the girl's hot. What is
that about cuz I like Justin Timberlake and pretty
much anything he's in but you you When you hit
the age of I believe it's a 25 when you hit the
age of 25 your clock starts It's a it's a implanted
basically almost like a tattoo like number on
your forearm When you hit 25 it starts counting
down your life and you have that much time left
and Currency is time like buying things you buy
it with an hour or you buy it with two hours
or a day And you can earn more time through your
job, etc And you have basically have to earn
enough time like the poor neighborhoods are living
day to day every day they seem to have 24 hours
and they have to go out and earn their life basically
for that day. And the rich neighborhoods have
decades or 50, 60, maybe even 100 years already
on their arms. But what happens is someone who
is somehow a millionaire, I guess in these terms,
he's tired of living and he gives all his time
to Justin Timberlake and then commits suicide.
And now Justin Timberlake is in the poor ghetto
with tons of hours and it's kind of his exploration
and his mission to try to bring down the system
and Because basically the rich people are hoarding
the time from the poor people So it's pretty
cool Awesome Michael, what is your number four?
Number four was Thor I like that movie, too.
I really enjoyed I I want to say I didn't think
much of it, but I'm not a fan of Thor. I read
comic books, but I don't read Thor. I was afraid
that this whole movie was going to be a bunch
of these and those, and it was just going to
suck. Sadly, I'm not a fan of Natalie Portman.
Yeah, I think that's what really took me out
of this movie was seeing Queen Amidala in it.
She did good, though, but Thor and Loki were
excellent. Yeah, the Thor and Loki was so well
done. What really got this movie for me is when
they kept going back to Asgard and it was so
beautiful. It was just amazingly, the special
effects were amazing and yet, you know, it wasn't
done in such a way that I didn't enjoy the non
Asgardian. I thought that this movie got, you
know, got a rough, I don't know, it got bad.
Press and I didn't think it deserved as bad of
you know reviews as I got I Like that I I think
the 3d aspects could have been better. Oh, yeah,
that was done kind of shifty Yeah, yeah, but
I mean for the most part now. I really enjoyed
the movie that hammer was awesome It was well
when he actually used it to create a tornado
and fly in the air. I was like fuck Yeah, man,
that's cool Because I didn't expect to see that
but yeah Steve, what is your number four? My
number four is horrible bosses. I found this
film freaking hilarious. Like, yeah, there were
some inappropriate parts in it, but the film
overall, like, I was laughing my ass off leaving
the theater. Like, my wife and I could not regain
composure after seeing this movie. Because I
mean you stayed through that whole movie and
then you go through the blooper reel at the end
of the movie and then just You I don't know.
It's just it was really good. It was a lot better
Hangover or any of that kind of stuff Yeah, I
will say from what I've seen of it. I haven't
actually seen it. I'll see it eventually You
know, it reminds me of a cross between office
space and throw mama from the train Well came
out the same time as bad teacher and it blew
that movie out of the water Yeah, to me. I don't
know. Yeah teacher wasn't that great compared
to this I've seen both Yeah My number four is
x -men first class I was expecting this to be
You know completely different something that
was Shut up Steve I thought it was going to be
something completely different from the previous
X -Men films, but seeing as how it's Fox that
still has the license, it just felt like a fourth
X -Men movie to me that was a prequel. It didn't
really feel very different to me than the other
three X -Men films. I agree. I liked it. I liked
the fact that Charles basically stood up and
said, no, you ain't shaving my damn head. You
know, I like that. I like how Magneto was portrayed
in this. Yeah, I like killing Nazis. I mean,
what's not to love here? Yeah, I like how Magneto
came into the possession of his helmet. However,
I absolutely fucking hate Kevin Bacon wearing
the goddamn helmet. That was so fucking stupid.
I hate Kevin Bacon. Yeah. This is no good reason
to have Kevin Bacon in this movie. Well, if let
alone his name is Bacon. I like his name. Well,
Kevin, you would. What is your number three?
Another unique one. E .T. meets the Goonies,
and that would be Super 8. Youthful casted, fantastic.
J .J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg were... This
is not just a movie that Steven Spielberg's name
was attached to. This is one that he... Actually
had some influence over and you can tell JJ Abrams
is a genius Spielberg's a genius. They came together
and made a genius movie Super 8 what for most
of the year? I thought this was gonna be my film
of the year until a couple You know at the Atlanta
half of the year passed it But super 8 is definitely
worth watching and if you liked either ET or
the Goonies, you will love this movie Awesome.
Awesome. What about you Michael? What's your
number three? My number three was Captain America
And I really enjoyed no I really liked Captain
America and this is one of those where I want
to say it's kind of like the opposite of Green
Lantern Where you see the animated version and
you go wow if the writing have been closer to
this animated version Maybe that would have made
more sense on the screen, but no this was dead
-on This was this was better than any other.
I mean I've seen a few Portrayals of Steve Rogers
and his backstory and such. And this has got
to be the best I've ever seen, and it was live
-action and in 3D. And you have Mr. Smith, aka
Megatron, now being Red Skull, and he just exuded
everything about the Red Skull. He was so Red
Skull, yeah. I want to say there wasn't anything
not to like here. But yeah, and again, you got
Nazis involved. Anytime you get Nazis being killed,
hey, what's not to like there? Steve, what about
you? What's your number three? My number three
is... We bought a zoo. Really? Which just came
out. I didn't want to see that. It was pretty
good. I just saw it this last weekend. Was it
that good though? I don't know if it was good
enough to be number three I just where I put
it on my list because yeah, but it was better
than some of the other ones I mentioned so But
yeah, it's got Matt Damon in it Shows him gray
hair. I was yeah. I know there's kind of wild
seeing him old. Yeah It was it was kind of nice
seeing that old will hunting You and your stupid
puns It was funny seeing him have you know going
from one part of his life of you know, because
he basically is widowed and has two kids and
just kind of upwards and moves and has no money,
has no idea how to run the zoo and everybody's
having to help him and he's going broke through
the whole thing and then eventually pulls through
but it was pretty good. It was a nice drama.
You know what's funny is I again live near Chicago
and they have the Burkefield Zoo here. We have
a family membership. Driving down the excellent
zoo. Yeah, I was driving down the road and I
saw The billboard for we bought a zoo and it's
literally like like a zebra with a giant gift
wrap bow around it and my first impression was
it's Christmas time and Brookfield Zoo has You
know come to the zoo posters up now because it
looked it didn't you didn't really see we bought
a zoo It was like tiny letters for a billboard
up in a corner. I didn't even see that. I just
saw an animal with a bow around it and I thought,
I've already got a family membership. Kind of
weird. But no, it wasn't until much later that
I actually saw the commercial. But I'm still
not interested in seeing it. I'm just not that
big of a Matt Damon fan. Oh, blasphemy. My number
three is Transformers Dark of the Moon. Finally,
Michael Bay got his head out of his ass and actually
listened to writers and actually, you know, made
some references to a bunch of other Transformers
stuff. For me, this is the best one out of the
franchise. I so didn't see the sentinel turn
because... I don't read the prequel stuff at
all. I haven't read any of prequel stuff for
any of the films. I just don't read it. I mean,
if there's a movie novelization that's, you know,
an abridged version of the movie book, I'll do
that. But I don't read prequel stuff. I loved
all the effects. Obviously, Cullen is prime is
awesome. The first, I would say, 30 minutes of
Shia being a little bitch I couldn't take, but
he got better. over time. And I just, I really
liked it. I thought it was great. And we finally
got Soundwave on Earth and that was awesome.
He was still Dr. Claw. And Leonard Nimoy was
awesome. Yeah, Leonard Nimoy was awesome as Sentinel.
I think Shockwave was very underutilized because,
and I think this was part of the marketing scheme
where they're like, oh, Shockwave is going to
be the big bad villain. well no here's this dark
twist that we're not telling you about you know
and by now everyone's seen it and as I said before
you know Sentinel turns on on the Autobots but
I think they built up the shockwave angle to
hide the fact of the of the Sentinel turn which
whatever it's a marketing ploy but I really did
enjoy it and that's my number three so Kevin
what is your number two My number two is Rise
of the Planet of the Apes. I never thought any
movie would be able to compete with the classic
70s films, especially after Mark Wahlberg's disastrous
attempt at that. Thankfully, I was wrong. This
film blows all Planet of the Apes films out of
the water. The effects on this film are insane.
I think this is the best visual work done by
a crew since Avatar. The apes looked so freaking
realistic. There are so many great moments in
this. I can easily see this being to the Planet
of the Apes franchise what the Dark Knight films
have been to the Batman franchise. This movie
was incredible. Huh. Wow. Yeah, it was. And I
had Gollum. What's your number two, Michael?
Number two. Well, you know, I want to go back
for a second here because I was actually looking
online at some movies and it didn't occur to
me suck sucker punch came out in 2011 and I really
liked that movie. I think I liked that movie
better than like my eight nine and ten movies.
So I wanted to retroactively revise that sucker
punch should be in that list somewhere in 3D
on the IMAX because it was just awesome. Number
two Harry Potter 7 .5 I was really disappointed
with Harry Potter 7 .0 But 7 .5 was a fitting
end to the series What about you Steve what's
your number two Captain America Notice Thor was
not on my list I didn't notice I thought maybe
it'd pop up in number one or something. No, I
don't like Thor it bored me. I fell asleep Wow,
the only time I thought Thor was awesome was
in superhero squad show, but moving on I've never
liked that character But anyways too much these
and that was a superhero squad to be honest anyway
Captain America was very very good I was kind
of skeptical as far as the World War two part,
but um I like how it came out it It left me actually
wanting to see the character again Yeah Can't
wait for the Avengers. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's gonna
be cool That's gonna break records by the way
do what I hope Avengers will break records. Oh,
yes, but you know it's gonna be really interesting
next year to see The war between Avengers and
Dark Knight to who makes the most. Oh, yeah.
Well, you know, there's gonna be a Hawkeye movie,
and then probably another Iron Man, and another
Hulk, and another Captain America, and then maybe
an Avengers 2. My number two is also Captain
America. One of the things I was skeptical about
this, not only because I don't know a lot about
the character, because I've only seen him in
animation here and there, I haven't read any
of the Captain America comics, I was really skeptical
if Chris Evans could... get out of being johnny
storm and transform himself into captain america
as far as his acting and he did it amazingly
i mean there there is no reference to johnny
storm and johnny storm who uh... shut up i didn't
yeah i know i knew it was the same actor i just
i i can't equate the two Right. No, no, no. They're
two completely different role portrayals, and
I absolutely love that. Whereas, you know, you
look at Green Lantern and it's just Van Wilder
in a Green Lantern costume. But Captain America
First Avenger was great. The only thing I kept
seeing, though, is every time Tommy Lee Jones
was on the screen, I kept waiting for acid to
hit his face. Oh, that's bad. So Kevin, drum
roll please. What is your number one? I'm taking
a departure from all of the geek movies that
we've been talking about and doing something
you wouldn't usually expect out of me. It was
a sleeping giant for me coming in at number one.
The movie 50 -50. I never expected this film
to be my favorite film of the year. I thought
it was going to be between Planet of the Apes
and Super 8 and then I saw this film and it blew
me out of the water. So many people, like myself,
have had personal experiences with cancer and
this movie was needed and appreciated. It had
the right blend of humor on a serious subject
matter. not so much that it took away from how
traumatic these experiences can be based on a
real -life experience of Seth Rogen with one
of his friends a bittersweet movie in a way,
but so worth it and I Don't know if it's not
gonna get the credit it deserves but this movie
was very much I don't know done, right? I haven't
heard of that one either 50 -50. It's Joseph
Gordon -Levitt on Seth Rogen. It's Joseph Gordon
-Levitt gets cancer at a very young age of 20
something Upper 20s mid 20s or something and
it's his experience with it And it's just very
real Wow Well, let's see that too Michael what
is your number one? I'm gonna have to go with
Transformers 3 dark the moon Again, I'm surprised
it didn't end up higher on your list, but this
movie, I really think redeemed the franchise.
Partially, it might just be because it was, I
want to say piecemeal stolen from several G1
cartoon storylines. I mean and there was a lot
of neat stuff going on there was a lot of really
cool stuff the there were no twins I Know they
showed up in the book And they got killed which
I personally I think I would have rather seen
I would have rather seen them get killed in the
movie Even if Michael Bay said they're not gonna
be in the movie I would have allowed them to
be in the movie for five minutes long enough
to get killed But no, I really enjoyed the movie
I I don't think there was anything that I didn't
enjoy about the movie. There was 100 % less dog
humping, probably about 35 % less military stock
footage, just a lot of good stuff going on. I
was really happy and I saw it several times,
in fact. And that's just because I'm a huge Transformers
geek, but because I, you know, I wanted to see
it in the IMAX, and I wanted to see it on a regular
screen, and I was even coaxing to see it in non
-3D and didn't enjoy it without 3D elements.
The 3D was done very well. It was just really,
really cool. And that's my number one. 3D is
a gimmick that needs to fade away. Oh, stop it.
And die. Yes, and die. Smell -O -Vision was the
game I needed to fight away. Yeah, that was in
Spy Kids. That was the only revival of Smell
-O -Vision was the crappy Spy Kids movies. What's
your number one, Steve? Okay. My number one is...
Sherlock Holmes and the Game of Shadows. That
film was by far... Way better than the first
and unlike certain Movies the where the sequels
don't measure up to the first film or or The
first movie wasn't that great Second movie was
even better both movies were top ten of their
year. Oh, yeah So, I mean this this film deserves
to be up there in the top ten top five at least
but I I just I loved this film. I went saw it
last week and I I love the the comedy bits that
are in there. I love the you know, slow motion
taking into their mind showing how they Figure
out certain things and then I like how the dynamic
between down in June You're in Jude Law, so that's
got the most intelligent dialogue in Hollywood
in the last oh yeah Well, they have to yeah sure
like Holmes mm -hmm But yeah, that's my number
one awesome nice pick Thanks, yes I'm hoping
there isn't a click after this but my number
one like and this is out of I already know what
it is. I'm mad The ones that I've seen this year,
the one that I was most impressed with, the one
that a few moments of it during it, pretty much
I was on the edge of my theater seat. Mission
Impossible 4 Ghost Protocol. Most overrated movie
of the year. I absolutely love what they did
with all of the new cast that they brought in
for Ethan Hunt's team. I love Ethan Hunt's characterization
in this. I think my only issue with this movie
is the fact that Simon Pegg has now taken over
the Ving Rhames spot of the comedy bit, and Ving
Rhames has just been relegated to an uncredited
cameo. Yes, it is a generic nuclear war plot,
but I like all the gadgets. I like all the effects.
Because I am a person who passed two -story buildings,
I'm scared to death of heights. I did jump out
of my chair when I thought he was almost going
to fall off that tall building. which is the
tallest building in the world. No, seriously.
I get vertigo like that. Looking down or looking
straight up from tall places, I get vertigo like
that. That's just what happens. I don't doubt
it, but what I find shocking is that you actually
thought he would die. I thought he was going
to fall. And die? Not die, just fall further
than he did. Well, he probably pulls his own
face off and it becomes a parachute and he could
have floated away to safety. The effects are
cool, the visual things are cool, the action
sequences are cool, the gadgets they use are
cool. All this is is a summer blockbuster, though.
I have no problems with people saying this is
a good movie or that they really love this movie,
but everyone that is making this the top 1, 2,
3, 4, or 5 movie of the year is out of their
freaking mind. Sorry, there's a lot of better
movies over the summer. That's true. This is
at least Fast Five wasn't your number one pick.
Good Lord. At least it wasn't my number one pick.
It should have been your number five pick. Wait,
wait, wait, wait. What did you say Kevin? I said
at least Fast Five wasn't your number one pick.
Oh no. Now, you know, I like Fast Five for what
it is. I like that franchise for what it is.
That's, as I said before, that's the beginning
of the summer stuff for me. But Fast Five, as
good as it was and as well as I liked it, no,
it's nowhere near. Being a number one movie.
Just real quick before we move on to our next
section, because nobody mentioned it in any of
their list, and I didn't have it on my list,
but I feel like a couple movies were really good,
and I want to at least give them a mention. Moneyball
was really good. Cowboys and Aliens, I thought,
was better than it should have been. Oh, forgot
about that one. Yeah, Real Steel was way better
than I thought it was going to be. And even The
Eagle I liked. So if you're interested in any
of those, you should check them out. Quick question,
Real Steel, is that appropriate for, like, my
boy? Because I was thinking about taking him
to see it because it seemed like you know the
little kid in it there's robots. I think so It's
basically a live -action rock -em -sock -em robots,
but what's it rated Kevin? I was gonna check
that out real quick. I mean, it's a it's a friendly
I think it's a family -friendly movie. I'm not
let me a hundred percent double check that but
no it was You know Hugh Jackman and the kid the
kid was excellent. Actually. He was way better
And I thought it was me and I thought this was
gonna be a stupid movie And we just went to see
it because nothing else was playing at the time.
And I just think it was pretty darn good. And
it is rated PG -13. Did you find it already?
No, I'm guessing. Why won't you tell me? Because
I'm not looking it up. That's your job. No, I'm
asking why Wikipedia won't tell me. It won't
tell you. It's got to be rated PG or G. I was
tempted to take him to see that. And I ended
up not. because I wasn't sure. It's kind of like
Pirates 4. I took them to see that and I was
like, oh my god, everyone's getting run through
with skimitars and you know, it's like, whoa,
you know, this is not appropriate for little
kids to be watching. And I was afraid I was just
giving more of that, you know. Yeah, it's not
being nice to me right now. It's not telling
me what the heck it's rated But no, I'm trying
to remember back to see if there's any specific
scenes. It's PG -13 So there must have been one
or maybe that's just for the violence though
It might be just before because of the boxing
moments. I don't remember there being any like
No, any like I don't think there was any sexual
or anything like that I don't think there was
any intense romantic scenes or anything like
that it was pretty much I think it's just because
the robots are beating the crap out of each other
so much but you might want to watch it first
or something just yeah I might just pass for
right now and maybe I'll just watch it with my
wife or something but I thought that might be
something he'd like Smurfs was another movie
that I thought he might like that I didn't actually
go see It says, rated PG -13 for some violence,
intense action, and brief language. Oh, well,
maybe it's okay for him, then. We let him watch
intense action. But it was way better than I
thought it was gonna be. Yeah, it's not like
saving part of Orion. If he can watch Dark of
the Moon, he can watch Real Steel. Oh, he's never
seen that. In fact, he watched one episode of
Power Rangers and we banned it. Yeah, I'm like,
you know, you're never watching that again. You
know, because he was running around punching
things and it's like, uh, no. Yeah, but for people
that like like the epic movies the eagle is one
you should check out too I was I haven't heard
that one either that is like a back in like the
Roman Empire type deal where a I don't know if
he was a general or whatnot. He's trying to go
into Unknown territory to get back a item that
his father had lost decades earlier and it's
just kind of like a it's kind of like I don't
know, you'd put it in the same realm as all those
other ones that were, not like gladiator, but
like... I don't want to say Troy because Troy
was a bad movie, but uh... I don't know, you
know, the old Roman Empire type stuff. Yeah.
No, that does sound cool. I mean, I'm probably
the last guy in the world that should be reviewing
movies because all I see is sci -fi and superhero
crap, but there's probably a good six or seven
you guys have mentioned that I'm gonna go try
to pick up on Netflix. Cool. Awesome. Let us
know what you think of them. Yes. So there you
have it. Those are all of our lists for top 10
movies of the year. We are going to move on to
memorable moments. I'm going to go first on this
one. I only have three. Anything to do with Arkham
City. Just seeing the trailers, seeing the Harley
trailer. Seeing more of what that game has to
offer another part of that that I loved was what
happened at the VGAs even though the spike VGAs
sucked this year, but just what they did with
Mark Hamill's voicing the Joker and What do you
have to kill to get an award around here? That
was just awesome another one Finally getting
new albums from my top two favorite bands through
them and Nickelback because it has been a number
of years since Either band had released an album.
Where's the new Rock Sugar album? I'm gonna be
pressing Jess about that next year. I'm still
waiting on that, yeah. And the final moment for
me was actually podcast related. The launch of
three awesome new podcasts in Rob Paulson's Talkin'
Tunes where... I truly believe our first interview
with him made him get into podcasting. We're
going to find that out maybe next year. I don't
know. Earth2 .net's dropped D, it's the very
first, at least the first one I've listened to,
a music review podcast where they take one artist
and they review every single album, one album
per episode. uh... so take like guns and roses
one episode will be all about appetite for destruction
and so on and so forth until they get through
an entire artist discography uh... and the final
one for the podcasts the untitled mike and laura
project from mike the fist of justice layman
and laura boobies thomas uh... very very awesome
to hear them do their own show is that really
her nickname Was originally her nickname her
name now is Laura LT smash Thomas and now it's
a running joke on that podcast where she changes
it every week Okay So Kevin what are your favorite
moment or moments of 2011 I just got to I don't
know how many people saw this YouTube clip or
saw it live on TV or on some type of replay show
but Anderson Cooper giggling like a little girl
When he was telling the story about Gerard Defardieu
peeing or doing whatever he did on the airplane
I don't know if you haven't seen this YouTube
Google it you got to find it. It was live on
air It's Anderson Cooper and he starts giggling
to the point where he cannot control himself
And it's so out of character for him and his
laugh is so high I have seen that it's funny
freaking hilarious that gave me a good laugh
But my favorite moment of the year would consist
of a number of moments, and it all revolves around
one name. Charlie Sheen. Winning. I'll get to
that later. Winning. That was so awesome. The
entire meltdown was epic to watch, and there
it was just amazing. That's my favorite moment.
Because he has Adonis DNA. And tiger blood. I
loved it. Tiger blood. That's right. I almost
forgot about that So Steve, what are your favorite
moment or moments of the year? I have to agree
with you. I I think That the thing with the video
game awards. I think that was truly epic Of Mark
Hamill Yes, yes, it was even though they pretty
much slighted him and Tara strong and put them
in the nosebleed section Which was so friggin
stupid and they didn't even yeah, but What are
your other moments for 2011, Steve? Favorite
moment? I'd have to say the fact that there were
so many damn movies I actually went and saw this
year. Good days for movies. Yes, some good, some
bad, some that needed to draw to a close, some
that unfortunately are going to be returning.
I'm not getting into those, but anyways. Yeah,
so I mean between those and then of course, you
know the stuff with Geekcast radio finally getting
larger on the grid Yeah, and then for my Wait,
we're not going into epics yet. We got Michael
still for favorite moments. All right. Oh Okay,
Michael. What are your favorite moment or moments
of 2011? well Originally, when I first saw our
favorite moment there, I thought we were still
talking about films. No. This is just in general.
One of my favorite moments in film, anyway, was
at the end of Transformers 3, where Megatron
single -handedly wipes out all the bad guys and
tears off their faces. You mean Optimus? Is that
what I said? You said Megatron did it. It would
have been more awesome if Megatron had done it.
It's getting late. I'm tired. I may have set
Megatron. No, I optimus prime tearing off everybody's
face That was that was fairly epic I think I
would have rather him handle it as he did in
the book Where he actually teams up with Megatron
to defeat Sentinel Prime? But you know, hey,
okay. Let's let's kill off the major bad guy
after 30 years of you know franchise sure why
not I Want to say Gosh off the top of my head
what were some more impressive moments? As far
as as far as geeky type things go Spider -man
Was rebooted name they now have a for lack of
a better term a black spider -man I Mean I don't
I don't follow the comics so much, but I know
it was huge. It was huge news. And there was
a lot of people who don't even follow. It's like
when Superman died. People who don't even follow
comics are coming out of the woodwork and going,
oh, you know, voicing their opinion the one way
or the other. Also, the revealing of who would
be the villains and who would be the characters
in the next Dark Knight was kind of a big moment.
Yeah, OK. Yeah, I wasn't really thrilled with
that either. I mean, I like I like Anne Hathaway
as the Catwoman and I want to say I'm the first
person who said Now I know why the Dark Knight
Rises. Rises, yes, it was you. I think that was
me. Yeah. Well, Anne Hathaway is hot. There was
a movie and I forget the name of the movie right
off hand, but She had a masturbation scene That
was very hot and you know go look it up somewhere
if you haven't seen it, but yeah, it was like
wow, okay? Because you think oh she did princess
diaries or whatever she's not gonna be all that
seductive She doesn't have that catwoman quality
and then you go back and find this clip and it's
like whoa, holy cow Yeah, so so there's that
but I don't think I I Don't think I was completely
blown away over that moment I don't know, this
has been a dull year. I was really excited to
go see the end of the Harry Potter franchise.
And I think they really pulled that out. They
knocked that one out of the park. I can't remember
now which movie made more money. Was it Harry
Potter or Transformers 3? Sadly, it was Potter.
Was it? Okay. Potter beat it out by like half
a million or something like that, but Transformers
3 made a lot. I mean, out of the three films,
it made the most. Yeah. Okay, so yeah, so there's
that. But no, I mean, I don't really think 2011
has been all that fantastic for me as a, you
know, as a fan. I mean, this is kind of the year
that I really stopped collecting Transformers.
Mainly due to the fact that the majority of the
toys that are coming out now are all Bayformers,
or some derivative thereof. You can get into
those Prime toys. They are actually really good
toys. Eh, maybe a couple of them. Like I said,
do I really need another movie, Bumblebee? Probably
not. Well, it's slightly different than movie
Bumblebee. It's actually a lot different than
movie Bumblebee. While it still retains the look
of it, it's a completely different design. But
anyways. I hear no there. As far as fandom goes,
this hasn't really been a good year for me. you
know I don't want to say you know reinvented
myself because I've been as a father because
I've been a father for a few years now you know
but uh but I'm less of a you know geeky nerdy
transformer collector you know fanboy type than
I am You know putting more attention to my kids
and raising them because they're not they're
not toddlers anymore I actually have to pay attention
to what they do and say The things my voice says
are insane. I mean just some of the stuff that
comes out of his mouth is crazy And they take
a lot more effort so no, I think this is probably
the year that You know, I've become less of a
fanboy didn't go to BotCon didn't do You know,
some of the more fanboy -ish, transformery type
things that I usually do or have done for the
last 10 -15 years. And refocus more on just being
a dad. Epic fails! Um, of course, Charlie Sheen's
craziness. That gave everybody the reason to
go, I'm winning! But yeah, I only say it's an
epic fail because well he lost his damn marbles
and killed his show But he is still did he kill
his career though I mean he's still my no his
career will bounce back next year when he starts
his new show anger management I Only hope that's
true epic fails for you Steve No, I think that's
pretty much it, other than the fact that I've
been waiting on new opportunities and getting
tired of being where I'm at now. What about you,
Kevin? Any epic fails for you for this year?
Yeah, I got three. All the sports strikes, the
NBA and the NFL strikes fail on them. Fail, fail,
fail. The Kim Kardashian marriage. That lasted
72 days is a fail on all of society. And my other
one would be the, even though I like these two
people individually, the Oscar host fiasco this
year with the replacement and insertion of James
Franco and Anne Hathaway. They were absolutely
terrible as Oscar hosts. James Franco was high,
I believe, and Anne Hathaway may have been drunk.
I don't know, but it was a horrible job hosting
the Oscars last year. Michael do you have any
epic fails of 2011? I don't want to say it was
so much a fail as much as it was ah crap this
sucks ass it's uh when macho man macho man Randy
Savage died it was like wow that is that is just
so yeah yeah I was I mean it wasn't a fail in
the sense that Your kids got a fork in their
nose, you know, yeah anything else that are more
epic fails and not celebrity deaths We already
covered the celebrity death. I know but I mean
we did cover the celebrity death But that that's
really what the one that hit me. It's like wow,
you know, this really sucks ass You know, I don't
live in this world anymore. Yeah Yeah, okay for
me I only have four Only yeah the ocean marketing
fiasco that just that has just happened over
the last two weeks since recording this episode
that was the dumbest thing ever i never heard
that either go go google ocean marketing and
you'll you'll be able to read all about it um
number three the mishandling of the voice acting
awards in spike tv's vgas the problem with this
is they were like oh well here's you know Here's
best male of the year. Here's best female. They
just announced them They didn't even allow best
male and best female voice performance went to
the portal to voice actors. I think more so Mark
Hamill rather than as much as I hope Tara Strong
will win I knew she wasn't going to I think it's
a damn shame that Mark Hamill did not win best
male voice of the year But they basically just
glossed right over it. They didn't even have
people come up and do announcement speeches for
that. The Spike VGAs this year, even though they
were better than last year's show, they focused
more on it being a very lengthy episode of Game
Trailers TV. That's all it was. Because they
were showing off tons of world premieres for
games coming up. Number two Kevin already mentioned
it the whole Kardashian wedding shit And number
one simply for one reason only number one epic
fail of the year for me Charlie fucking Sheen
it's more so because of what happened with his
kids. He went on the air after that happened
and he's like, oh, it was just a stunt, it was
just a publicity stunt, it was just this, it
was just that. I'm sorry, the Beverly Hills Police
Department does not take time out of their busy
ass days to have a stunt being done at your fucking
house and having your children forcibly removed
from you. That was so fucking stupid and I can't
get behind any of that bullshit and every time
Steve says it I fucking cringe. I'm winning.
Shut up. Actually there was one more thing that
I forgot about that would be an epic fail. I
was expecting an iPhone 5 this year. Yeah, everybody
was. Everybody was and I got an iPhone 4S. Did
I buy one? Yes I did because I had to replace
my ancient -ass iPhone 3G. Uh, you know, am I,
am I one of those, you know, whiners that say,
Oh God, I really wish the five would come out.
Yeah, I wind. I, I wrote a blog post about it.
I was really kind of pissed off. Uh, but I bought
the forest. I really like it. I enjoy it. I didn't
want to wait another year for the five. I have
no idea what the five is going to hold for us.
I think iPhones just in general are epic fails.
I mean, it depends. I, if you want to ignore
the legacy of Steve jobs, then yeah. Okay. Fine.
But I have no problem with that. Alright so that's
it for our favorite moments and epic fails and
we are going to be moving on. GCRN in 2012. And
now to almost close out the show at least for
us. We're going to be telling you what is coming
up for geek cast or radio network in 2012 2011
was our biggest year yet 2012 holds all kinds
of awesome goodness Starting off with stuff that
we are ending this year in 2011 transformation
animation This also currently ends our transformers
cartoon review podcasting for now. It will be
back eventually Tooncast Classic ended this year
and Secret Origins Podcast ended this year. All
of the shows that you know and love will be returning
next year. Legends of the Dark Knight is continuing,
Once on Joe Mind, GCR Wars, hopefully we can
get that off the ground. Toycast will be returning
for the entire year of 2012. After that, we're
not too sure. Tooncast Beyond will be continuing
and Movie Weekend Review as well as GeekCast
Radio. I'm sure we'll do a few All Things Transformers
episodes here and there. And Telecast will be
returning, I think. Dead silence. All right.
Moving on to the brand new shows for 2012. Steve,
you want to take that first one in the image
there? Your baby there? Yes, as soon as my browser
shows up. Steve launched, well he will be launching,
Extreme Retro Gaming. Yes, Extreme Retro Gaming,
which is basically in the title what it says.
Um... Extreme! Yes. Sounds like Rob Liefeld should
be doing the cover art or something. Extreme!
Yeah. Anyways, um... Yeah, that used to be a
site I ran whatever I will officially unveil
it after the new year It will basically entail
with current and retro video games Just so that
we can get different gaming perspectives and
it'll be kind of one shots on each Game itself
instead of just franchises, right? You were a
dot you were a dot you liked it Speaking of dots,
aren't you also going to be rebooting mainframe,
Steve? Yes, I'll be rebooting mainframe Which
is the We're gonna be doing the reboot show Myself
and Tara and maybe a third person will be discussing
mainframes Primary 3d show before Beast Wars
of reboot which I have the complete series of
Yes, yes that will start some time and within
the first six months of 2012 and in any case
And all is Kevin needs is a piece of chicken
wire and a lighter For your new show that you're
gonna be premiering in 2012 the MacGyver files
Yeah It's the best show of all time I own all
seven seasons on DVD as well as the television
movies and we're going to uncover the MacGyver
files in depth by going episode by episode reviewing
them all in the MacGyver files and it's going
to be awesome. That will be awesome. Continuing
the 80s live action review show trends, myself
and Dion the Music Man are going to be reviewing
every episode of Knight Rider when we premiere
next September, Beyond the Knight. So there's
that and then Kevin and I are going to be premiering
in April, Masked Mayhem, where we're going to
review every episode from the television show,
Mumbled Armored Strike Command, all 75 episodes
of that. And then in October... With a K. Yes.
Then in October... Kevin and I are going to start
a very very long good journey when we unveil
powers of grayskull we are going to review every
single episode of all four Masters of the Universe
cartoons from the 80s He -Man and She -Ra to
that crappy new adventure stuff to 2000x Mike
Young Productions Masters of the Universe So
that's what's coming up in 2012. Steve, didn't
you have one other one on here that you were
going to be doing? Yes. I will be launching with
a friend that I've known since high school a
board game podcast, which will more than likely
be like a monthly show, maybe more frequent,
just depending on how it goes. But it'll be called
Tabletop Enthusiast. Yeah, so we'll focus on
your standard board games, card games, RPG strategy,
and all different kinds that you play on the
tabletop. There may be a few other things of
surprising new shows or new things that might
come your way that we're not going to tell you
about yet. Depending on how much time we have
in between the car I mean we're launching five
brand new podcasts next year in inclusion to
the five that are five or six or seven that are
that are returning that's still it's just this
stuff you don't know about yet, but yeah, and
there's also you know We already kind of mentioned
it but wars and the flagship show are gonna have
some cool themed type of things coming too Oh,
yes, yes, you know So that's it for GCN in 2012.
Stay tuned for that. We are going to take a break.
And you're going to hear from some of our partners
in crime, affiliates, whatever you want to call
them. And we'll be back after this. And now,
our syndicated hosts. This is Jason Marsden,
voice of Duke, from G .I. Joe Renegades. You
are listening to the Geekcast Radio Network.
Hello everyone and welcome to this GCRN year
in review special, What's on Joe Mine? Any other
time we're a weekly fancast about the world of
G .I. Joe, but tonight we're bringing the recording
gear out one more time before the end of 2011
to go over some of the best and worst moments
from G .I. Joe to last year. This is the first
time you're hearing us. I'm Gary, otherwise known
as Commander -in -Chief on the forums. Joining
me is our man behind the curtain. And whatever
he's doing behind the curtain, we don't want
to know. But when he always comes out, he has
a smile on his face. Everyone, please say hi
to our showrunner, Greg. Hello. He's also known
as Crosshair. He is the admin of GeneralJose
.com, which makes him some sort of rock star
in the community or something. But tonight, he
put the groupies on hold so he can be here to
correct Chuck. You know him as General Hawk,
but we know him as Justin. Everyone, say hi to
Justin. What's happening, guys? How you doing?
Glad you're here. Glad to be here. You know our
last host on the program as Chuck or Chuck Dogg
in 1999, but on the program he is known to the
three of us as, uh, no, you're wrong and what
the hell are you talking about? But for the sake
of tonight's recording, we'll just stick with
Chuck. Is that okay, man? That sounds good to
me, buddy. Awesome. And now we are off and running
as probably one of our quickest intros yet. Greg,
back to you. All right. So let's talk about the
top five and worst five items for 2011 in the
world of G .I. Joe. So we'll start off with the
worst first. Number one on the worst list is
the ending of G .I. Joe Renegades the Animated
Series. We talked about it when it actually happened
a couple months ago, but I think all of us were
pretty big fans towards the end of the series.
What do you guys think? Oh yeah, I agree. I mean,
I was one of the few folks kind of pumping it
up before it even aired. A lot of the artwork
had turned a lot of people off, but I think those
folks who actually stuck with it and watched
it, most of them enjoyed it and really thought
it was a pretty refreshing take on it and were
kind of disappointed with it and I know I was
definitely at the top of that list. I ended up
enjoying it much more than that overproduced
overhyped schlock show T at Transformers Prime
and I thought it was gonna be a horrible show.
Yep. And I mean the story just dragged kept me
interested until the very end. I was like hey,
sorry to see you go. Yeah, just when it was starting
to get good we had a kind of a tie -up of loose
ends and there's still some loose ends out there
and the toys were just that close from hitting
with long with the cartoon and fail. They ruined
it for us. So we'll see if it's really on hiatus
or not. Time will tell, but it certainly doesn't
look good, especially when you go into a Target
or a Walmart and see a bunch of pegs of Renegades
figures hanging on the shelves and not much else.
But who knows, I'll get my finger crossed. Fingers
crossed. Jeez. Where's your other finger? I can't
tell. Where's your other finger, Justin? This
is the explicit tag in iTunes. Number two on
the worst list was... Quinn and Data Viper were
shelved slash canceled. So we saw our first glimpse
of the action figure Quinn in jungle fatigues
for the first time in nearly 30 years. And then
we found out that he actually was not going to
be coming out. Just kidding. Yeah. Pull the rug
out from underneath us. And then the same happened
with Data Viper where we saw prototypes of it.
And then we realized that it wasn't actually
going to come out this year either. So sad day
for both of those. Yeah, it was a bummer, especially
the Data Viper, just because we've been pretty
much told that the Data Viper is dead in the
water, and not really to expect a whole lot from
him. Quinn, at least, they're kind of still leading
us along, saying they're gonna find a way to
get him out there. Just may not be until 2012,
whereas Data Viper, they've basically said, tough
luck. Suckas. Maybe another time, so. Suckas.
Suckas. It's a bummer. I kind of understand why
they did it, and there's... It would appear that
by cancelling data viper maybe they're able to
give us some more interesting stuff in the rumorodders
and dreadnought seven packs. I don't know if
that's the case or not. It does seem to coincide
with that tooling getting dropped. Hey, you never
know. Maybe something good came out of it. But
as of now, the lack of a data viper is pretty
disappointing. I agree with both of you. I was
looking forward to Quinn a little bit more just
because it was going to be nice to have like
a stockier body type for customizers and what
have you. Data Viper is like a new character.
The look of him, I mean, it just screened fragile
to me, so I wasn't that heartbroken over it,
but it's a shame that... Both of them aren't
going to see the light in 2011. Chuck, since
when do you care about customizers? Three episodes
ago, you said you didn't. Well, I... Well, no.
I mean, I care, but I don't want figures to be
designed just for, you know, just for their comfort.
Remember, you're always on the record here on
what's on Joe Mine. Right. You don't get away
with anything, Chuck. You're nothing. Look, I
mean, if you want to know, I'm happy to see it.
I was happy to see the Quinn figure because maybe
somewhere down the line somebody can make a figure
of me using that body mold. There I said it.
That would be a lot of sculpty. That's all I
have to say. Anyways, yes the data viper died
for your fanboy sins and it probably did resurrect
14 of figures which would be the dread knocks
and the renegades and if that's so I will take
that 14 to one trade Quinn Quinn is not dead.
We've we're gonna get him one way or another
It's Daryl's baby. If he says it's coming, it's
coming. I believe him. He's a fan just like us
Thank God, so we will see him hell or high water
It just we don't know when that's gonna be number
three on the list of the worst is distribution
issues for figures this year, so we five and
six of Pursuit of Cobra were pretty much very
very hard to find in stores and even then it
was pretty much only Walmart's and then we had
two different times this year where we had two
waves come out within a month of each other and
the first part of that wave is or the first wave
of that group was always hard to find so I think
this is a year that people really had issues
getting figures in stores when they wanted to.
Yep I would agree with that I mean distribution
for GI Joe hasn't been fantastic anyway but you
didn't really see a year like this year and the
real shame of it is A lot of people are kind
of, you know, blaming 2009 and the rise of Cobra
Glut of product, and I can kind of agree with
that. There's so much product out there that
just didn't move. But what happens is that you
get figure waves like this year, in 2011, that
were excellent, and some of the best toys that
Hasbro has produced in many, many, many years,
and yet retailers are so gun -shy on the G -Edge
O brand, they under -order or they don't order
at all, and you have some of the best figures
that Hasbro has produced in recent years that
aren't being given to retail stores for sale,
or aren't being ordered by retail stores for
sale, which is... kind of a shame. There's a
bunch of good stuff in waves five and six that
just kind of never really hit the market, never
really flooded the market. Thankfully, that's
kind of been resolved a little bit as the 30th
anniversary hit. I know at least waves one and
two have started hitting retail pretty heavily
again, but now we're running to the same problem
with waves three and four where a lot of places
are, those are kind of trickling out there, but
they're not in heavy distribution yet. Now before
Chuck goes real quick, Chuck, I will actually,
since you have so much problem with distribution,
I will defer my entire speaking rotation to you
to give you extra time. to talk about how bad
distribution is in your area. All I need is 10
seconds, so Chuck, go. All I was going to say
is I think this was an issue that Hasbro's had
the entire year with both its major brands. As
Greg said, it was like those last two waves,
five and six, and it was on four. I had honestly
thought that by now we would have seen them just
because stores would be putting them out now
instead of the newer product, but fool me, they're
putting out the newer product. It's a shame because
it was some really great Figures in those last
two waves that other people are going to have
to go through other means to get if they really
want Pre -order your toys at Kokomo toys calm
Number four kind of ties in with distribution,
but But we have a very limited release of 30th
anniversary figures. So initially when it was
announced, it was supposed to be 30 for 30. So
we were going to get 30 different figures and
vehicles tied into the 30th anniversary of GI
Joe. And that kind of got chopped with retaliation
dropping in 2012. Yeah. I don't know if we really,
if we ended up getting a lot of stuff chopped,
but I think the 30th, it's kind of a shame that
the 30th anniversary got truncated the way it
did. I think we got everything or most of everything,
maybe except for Quinn that Hasbro had pair.
But it still it seems like it's not what the
30th anniversary deserved or not what this kind
of new rebranding of GI Joe deserved I mean if
you sit there and you look at wave 4 and you
look at the zombie viper and sci -fi and airtight
and lifeline and you just want to weep because
Hasbro's getting every single figure perfect
just in time to say all right now we're stopping
time to move on to retaliation and you got to
kind of just cross your fingers and hope that
they continue full steam ahead with retaliation
toys I, again, have to agree with what's already
been said. It's a shame that, you know, the 30th
anniversary of the Toy line that really helped
establish Hasbro in the 1980s gets, like, a four
-month span. I mean, there should be, I feel,
should have been a bigger celebration, but with
the movie coming out, I understand what they're
thinking, and, you know, we just have to deal
with it. Yeah, it's just a brief train stop onto
the next movie. So, unfortunately, that's all
we get, and there's no point in really getting
upset. at it right now because it's done, we're
moving on, we'll see movie stuff come April.
Alright, and then our final worst for 2011. Justin,
you want to explain this one a little bit more?
Sure, yeah. One of the things that I've always
loved about G .I. Joe throughout the years was
that they managed to tell a pretty interesting
story through the toys, whether, you know, sometimes
it's through the comics, sometimes it's through
the cartoon, but a lot of times even just through
the toys themselves, like with Barrel Roll and
Blackout, the Stall Brothers, they kind of told
a neat story. They really seemed to go the extra
mile to tell that story. But I think they really
dropped the ball, especially with Wave 4 when
we got the Zombie Vipers. And we heard a little
bit of a snippet at JOCON this past year. about
Compound Z and how about how it's used to create
the zombie vipers. But I really think zombie
vipers and the 30th anniversary figures could
have been a lot more successful as a whole if
Hasbro had found a way to kind of weave a story
into them. Kind of what motivated Cobra to create
the zombie vipers, what exactly Compound Z was.
Even this last wave four of figures where you
had Syfy and Airtight and Lifeline and the zombie
vipers all in one wave almost seemed to be a
branding or a storyline built wave where you
had Airtight versus the zombie vipers. your life
line could kind of tie into that too. Yet, we
didn't really get a story to show what happened
or what the evolution of the story was. And I
think as popular as the Zombie Vipers already
are, there's people out there buying dozens of
them already from online stores. I think they
could have been even more popular or maybe gotten
stuck in the muds like Gary to come around to
them if we actually had a story to go along with
them. Hey, hey, hey, hey. To kind of explain
how they came into being, why they came into
being, and what the whole purpose of them was.
So I think that was really a ball that got dropped
by Hasbro. VW and companies like that to kind
of tell the G .I. Joe story. But I think they've
got to make some effort to do it with themselves
within the toy line, too. And I think when they
don't do it, they can sometimes drop the ball
and sometimes lose some of the magic that was
G .I. Joe. So that was a big bummer for me. I
was really looking forward to these wave four
file cards thinking that, oh, wow, maybe they'll
tell a little story about how these characters
all come together, like how the zombie viper
evolved to what he is. And we just we basically
got nothing. So that was kind of disappointing
to me. Justin you just touched upon IDW. I mean
this could have been a great way to tie into
their little zombie Crossover storyline that
they did earlier this year Infestation I I mean
that I mean it was presented. He was laid before
Hasbro I think they really should have taken
the opportunity and just stepped right up the
door was open walk on through I am not a stick
in the mud, by the way. No, I was at JoCon and
I heard the whole story and I know how it's going.
But it's also, it's the potpourri of picking
accessories I think sometimes Hasbro runs into.
It's like, well, here's what we have access to.
Oh, we got the blue heavy water catalytic element
that we had for the mass device. So let's throw
that in there. Well, now we got something blue.
How else can we wrap something blue? Well, we
got all these nanomite containers that we paint
green for the movie. Let's paint those blue or
include the hazard viper into it. And then all
of a sudden you got... zombies out of this thing.
Once again, love the zombie viper, love the sculpting
and everything, absolutely hate the concept.
I'm done. Stick in the mud. Haters gonna hate.
That's right, haters gonna hate. So let's move
on to the best of 2011, which I think there's
quite a bit to talk about, so it was hard to
pare it down to just five things. Number one
on the list for us was GI Joe Renegades. Even
though it was cancelled, the actual episodes
were just great animation and... the callbacks
to the original G .I. Joe run were very neat
and I think if it had to wrap up, it did a pretty
good job wrapping up that little period of time.
Yeah, I'm trying to keep in mind that we're recording
a segment for another show, so I don't want to
rattle on and rattle on and rattle on, but man,
I could talk about G .I. Joe renegades for three
hours all on its own. It was awesome. Yeah, it
was a really cool thing that Hasbro did. They
found a way to bring in the G .I. Joe concept
without going overboard into the military, yet
military was still definitely a part of it. It
wasn't perfect. There were the biovipers that
were kind of a pain. souped up laser weapons
that weren't so realistic. It got a little formulaic
at the beginning, but it really came onto something
good. They were doing some great stories, great
plot development, great character development.
They weren't afraid to break down some of those
barriers. They had a really good way, even though
people did complain about the artwork a little
bit, they had a great way of taking the right
character traits and building on them. Their
new Destro was fantastic. Their new Firefly was
really cool. Cobra Commander had evolved into
something that where people really kind of didn't
like his design at the beginning, by the end
with the... his full face mask and everything.
He was a really cool, viable character that looked
the part of Cobra Commander. It was doing a lot
of things right. And it was really disappointing
that it ended. But of course, we're on the best
of list now, so we've got to talk about what
it did well. And I think it told a really cool
story, really progressed over the series of episodes.
And I thought they did the GI Joe concept proud,
in spite of what some people would say. I think
they really lived up to the brand nicely. And
they told a really great story. The one thing
I think I can say I like the best about running
is that it set up the story, and then when it
executed and let everything fall into place,
that's when it was fantastic. Unfortunately,
you know, in hindsight, since it's only a one
-season show, you can say it took a little too
long to set up, but once it was set up and everything
went going, oh my god, the nods, the inside stuff,
really was good. Yeah, once it hit, like episode
18, episode 18 through 26, actually 17, I think,
was Castle Destro, which is when they first met
Destro at Destro's castle. Once they kind of
got to that... point it really started moving
along and doing good things. Once it picked up,
I was a huge fan. By the time this is aired on
the GCRN, you'll still have time. Go to iTunes
and actually Renegade Season 1 is on sale. I
believe it's $39 .99 for the entire season versus
$50. So if you haven't seen Renegade yourself,
go to iTunes, download the entire season, $39
.99. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
And Greg and Justin and I can tell you that on
an Apple iOS device, that video's nice. Yeah,
it looks real pretty. Yeah, on your Apple iPod
or iPad it looks fantastic video. Next up on
the best list for the year we had GI Joe retaliation
announcements and the trailer which just came
out a couple weeks ago. I think they saved the
best for last for this year because the trailer
was just awesome. Absolutely, it was fantastic
and we've been getting like awesome trailer after
awesome trailer after awesome trailer the past
couple of weeks and I think Retaliation really
holds up to pretty much all of them. I actually
enjoy it more than I enjoyed The Dark Knight
Rises and it's right on par there with The Hobbit
which just came out and also Prometheus which
came out today. It's a bunch of really cool trailers
but yeah G .I. Joe Retaliation was awesome and
probably my favorite part of the whole G .I.
Joe Retaliation experience was more of the social
media hype kind of surrounding it. We had a really
cool network of guys, G .I. Joe fans and stuff
on Twitter who are really getting behind it and
kind of having a chance to interact with John
Chu a little bit as he was hyping up the premiere,
getting the rock involved and just doing some
really cool kind of social media interaction
stuff and having a blast with it. And that night
was one of the most fun nights I've had in a
long time with the G .I. Joe fandom, just the
trailer debut, kind of grabbing screen caps,
talking about it, ranting, raving about it, saying
how cool it was and just enjoying the public
outcry for it. That was definitely a highlight,
not just the trailer itself. Obviously the trailer
is very cool, but all the events. and all the
kind of fan interaction leading up to the trailer
and the reactions from the trailer. Yeah, I mean
to see have a trailer come out that it's like
so hyped up the fan base that they want this
movie out yesterday. I mean, that's fantastic.
And as Justin said, to go along with like the
social media integration, the rock constantly,
you know, hyping up this movie that, you know,
John Chu talking with the fans and just the cross
with everybody getting so excited for it. I mean,
it'll be really interesting to see as the months
go by what more stuff comes out for retaliation
until the movie is finally released. Don't pop
yourself on that train quite yet, Chuck, because
I believe you were bad mouthing it a couple weeks
ago. But with that said... Chuck's not getting
away with anything tonight. No, he's not! I was
trying to just like, you know, keep it positive,
just... Careful what you say it's gonna come
back and get you hey folks Speaking of the train
hop on now because if you're not it's gonna it's
gonna be a full train You might find difficulty
getting on and I think it's gonna be a great
movie And then we'll have transformer fanboys
like TFG when Mike not being able to complain
about it, so Starts there guys. This was gonna
be a hit Okay, and then the best part is is that
John Shue has said that this was just a teaser
and I guess there's more to come So I mean that's
that blows my mind how a two and a half minute
to quote Justin Hell yeah. Hell yeah, exactly.
So I'm fired up. It's going to be a great next
seven months, that's for sure. Six months, jeez.
Alright, next up on the list for the best of
2011 was Jokon 2011 in Orlando, Florida. Gary,
would you like to talk about that a little bit?
Jokon is always my highlight of the entire year.
It's when you get a chance to hang out with your
buddies, you get to go out and you get to drink
some beers, you get to talk to G .I. Joe for
the entire weekend. Best of all, it was just,
it was an honest -to -God layback weekend. All
the sets sold, all the exclusives sold. It really
seemed coming out of this one, everyone was very,
very happy. Jokon 2011 was a hit. I agree, even
though I wasn't there. And it was an excellent
convention set as well. Yeah, and I think a lot,
you know, between the figure subscription service
being announced and between the modern style
set, you know, being hugely popular and selling
out really quickly, it was obviously a very successful
show for not just Joe fans, but also for the
G .I. Joe Collectors Club, which only means good
things going forward. So I think it can be considered
a hit for sure. Speaking of the club and the
figure subscription service that is number four
on the best of 2011 as it was announced at Joe
con and then I did that on purpose Greg. I know
Segway It was announced at Joe con and we've
been getting a whole bunch of reveals over the
last couple months with them showing figures
and giving hints and stuff like that So the figures
don't actually hit till 2012 But we have a lot
of hype going into what the actual figures are
gonna get be when you get them in hand Definitely.
There's another thing where social media has
really kind of turned whole promotional world
on its ear and I'm really glad the club has kind
of gotten kind of used to that whole scenario
and taking advantage of Twitter and Facebook
to kind of branch out and get the word out and
promote this stuff and it's been really cool
to see these reveals here and there and everywhere
and it's been an awesome experience in a very
cool part of 2011. I absolutely can't wait for
these things to start hitting. Let's go over
real quick what we know. It's 20 to 25 a figure.
They're going to be able to take your payment.
And three payments are all in one lump sum up
front. You need to be a club member in order
to participate. So that's a $42 membership fee
right there. You have to pay right up front.
All of them are 25th style carded, single carded,
single bubble figures with the file card on the
back. The 13th figure is free upon your paid
subscription. You won't know what figures you're
getting until they arrive. That's a nice little
thing, yeah. That's a little bonus, a little
surprise. Custom made boxes so to protect your
investment. It's not going to be cheap but I
think it's the fact that it's on our list here
and we think it's something good. We think it's
something definitely good for the hobby. It was
a hot button issue with a lot of people this
year. We'll see come June, maybe come next fall
about how this thing pans out. I think it's actually
going to come out pretty good. I think so too.
I'm getting a good vibe with it. I think especially
with the last reveal being Big Boa that got a
lot of positive reaction and I seem to see more
and more people kind of getting on board, which
I think is definitely a good thing. And then
our final great thing for 2011 was the actual
30th anniversary figures and vehicles. So not
only did we get the pursuit of Cobra towards
the beginning of the year, it kind of transitioned
to the 30th towards the end of the year, and
we got great vehicles like the redo of the Sky
Striker, a redo of the Vamp, the Black Dragon,
the Crimson Hiss, and then a whole heaping...
helping of awesome figures like Law and Order
and Airtight and Sci -Fi and Lifeline and Stalker
and it's probably been one of the best years
in Joe action figures I can remember in quite
a while. It's so amazing just that this is the
past couple of years G .I. Joe has kind of been
considered in I don't want to say a downward
trend but it kind of in a dipping point in its
cycle where you know Rise of Cobra had a little
bit of a negative impact at retail so Hasbro
has been kind of scaling things back a little
bit so you can kind of consider 2010 and 2011
to be. quote -unquote down years for the G .I.
Joe brand yet the figures they've been releasing
have been so awesome and you nailed it Greg with
the examples you mentioned like law and order
and lifeline and sci -fi and airtight and it's
incredible when the 25th anniversary came out
in 2007 I was so lukewarm about it the whole
idea of you know regurgitating what we've gotten
over the past 25 years into one modern style
toy line that just didn't really bring a whole
lot new to the table and in fact was almost less
articulated in the previous brand to see the
difference between the 25th anniversary and the
30th anniversary and how they've really refined
that Pursuit of Cobra style, a kind of modern
military aesthetic. It's fantastic. They've come
such a long way in the past four years and I
agree totally. The 30th anniversary was an absolute
highlight. It's been amazing just seeing the
engineering, seeing the details, seeing the construction
of these figures. Hasbro designers have just
been knocking it out of the park and by far this
was one of the major highlights. I'm a GI Joe
fanboy and a GI Joe Hasbro apologist anyway,
but I haven't had to apologize for a lot of these
figures. because people realize exactly how cool
they are. You stack them up next to any other
toy line out there, any one of them, and I defy
anybody to look at a Star Wars figure compared
to a G .I. Joe figure, look at a Marvel figure
compared to a G .I. Joe figure, and you tell
me which figure is more detailed, more well articulated,
and more well made. You're not gonna find a better
one than the foreign G .I. Joe's. Sum it all
up. Everything was great vehicle wise even the
fact that we had repaints I mean the repaints
were solid but the fact that we got a sky striker
everybody and Every Joe and their their Joe fan
cousins uncles brothers monkey Whatever was asking
for this thing to come back out We'll get there
you got it the fact that they even went as far
as doing some sort of lame Crossover with transformers
for San Diego Comic -Con says something now.
Would you stop asking for crossovers, please?
Thank you. No, not after Starscream you so popular
man. That's all we're gonna get I know, I know.
Deal with it. You know what we're gonna get this
year for San Diego Comic Con? We're gonna get...
Probably another crossover. I was gonna say it's
gonna be a Zombie Viper Transformers crossover.
Well, we'll see how the Transformer fans think
about that. Alright, and there you have it. Those
are our best and worst for 2011 from the guys
at What's On Joe Mind. Well, that does it. You
can talk to us at What's On Joe Mind at gmail
.com or on Facebook at facebook .com slash What's
On Joe Mind. You can also download our show along
with other great GCRN podcasts at iTunes, Stitcher
Smart Radio, and GeekCastRadio .com. We'd like
to thank Mike and Steve for adding us to the
GCRN network for 2011. We really look forward
to 2012 being a strong year for G .I. Joe. And
we would like to remind you, Mike, yes, TFG1
Mike, if it wasn't for G .I. Joe, your online
nickname would probably be more like Leader One
Mike or Jedi Mike or something far more lame.
Er, we mean cool than your TFG1 moniker now.
So for our showrunner, Greg, our cohost Justin,
Chuck, I'm Gary saying to all our men and women,
serving God bless, God speed, and come home safe.
Good night, folks, and thanks for listening to
this special TCRN year in review edition of What's
On Your Mind, the official podcast of Roll Out,
Roll Call 3, and now back to the studios to Steve,
Leader One, Michael, and Kevin. See ya. See ya.
Merry Christmas. Hi guys, Phil here from BlogRack3000.
Great to be here once again on the Geek Cat Radio
Network. Mike and the gang have invited me to
take part in this special end of year episode
with our top picks etc. So, as always, let's
do the rundown of my top 5, I think, maybe 10,
who knows. Films of the Year, definitely. These
are in no particular order, they're just all
my favourite films of the year, you know what
I'm saying? So, obviously you've got to go with
Transformers. Dark of the Moon, a huge Transformers
fan. I love the movies a lot more than a lot
of people do. I really enjoy what Michael Bay
does with them. You know, come on, the popcorn
movies, we know that. Everyone complains about
that, but we go into watching him and the popcorn
movies, we know that. I know that, you know that.
We go in for badass giant robot action and that's
what we get. And I love them for that. So yeah,
also another pick this year would have to be
the entire crop of Marvel movies. You know, we're
talking Captain America, Thor, all of those films
are absolutely badass. Thor brought the action
and the comedy, and I think Captain America brought
the heart, so it'll be interesting to see what
that leads into with Avengers in 2012. But yeah,
loved Thor, 3D was great for a change. Chris
Hemsworth, genius pick for the role. Anthony
Hopkins, as usual, It does his whole Shakespearean...
It's Thor's father, Odin. A fantastic movie.
Well, I can't praise it enough. And then on the
flip side, you've got Captain America, which
I was originally thinking would be absolutely
rubbish. I had hopes for Thor, but Captain America
was like, no, come on. It's going to be terrible.
It's got Jim Johnson, who did... Jim Johnson,
I think, too. You get it, did Jurassic Park 3
and then... some of the Terrell movies. And I
was like, yeah, this is not going to work. And
then they put Chris Evans in the movie and were
like, come on, we're oversaturating Chris Evans.
He's been Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four. He
was a superhero, sort of, in Push. I was getting
to play an actor like Captain Raker, but it totally
surprised me. Everyone blew it completely out
of the park. Great, all -American film. Really
captured the heart of it. character and of the
Marvel Universe and the scenes with him being
the puny kid at the beginning before he became
Captain America. Fantastic, some of the best
scenes in the Superman movie I've ever seen,
I think. What are my other picks? Those are my
three. I can't really... I don't know how many
other picks I have yet. Those three are the big
standouts for me. I really... I haven't seen...
I could go through the films I haven't seen yet
which is quite hefty considering I've run them.
a geek blog, which I should be smacked for, but
yeah, on the film side of things, the comic book
movies always do it for me. I mean, I didn't
have an issue with Green Lantern. That was a
bit cheesy as per usual, but I enjoyed it. You
know, there's nothing really that screamed, apart
from those three that really screamed at me this
year, I don't know what it is. It's been a bit
of a lacklustre year, otherwise my brain's just
not remembering anything. Which is probably more
than likely. Bad teacher was pretty good really
for a company. I hated Bridesmaids, that's just
going on. Haven't seen Super 8, haven't seen
Kung Fu Panda 2. Hangover Part 2. Oh, X -Men
First Class. How could I forget X -Men First
Class, come on. Nobody expected anything like
that either. We have X -Men 3. Terrible. Well,
terrible compared to the other two, it's still
kind of a cheeseball flick. You know, Brett Ratner,
I do watch Brett Ratner movies. I mean, in fact,
thinking about it, X -Men First Class, and I
knew that Brett Ratner's other film this year,
Tower Heist, Tower Heist. I would actually put
that on my favourite film playlist, Tower Heist.
Went to see that previous screening, absolutely
loved that film. Again, as I always keep to say,
I wasn't expecting much. I was surprised, you
know, it was Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, come
on. The two of them had some really nice comedies
together, especially Eddie Murphy with Norbert,
come on. But yeah, I was really, really surprised
with that film. It turned out pretty damn good.
You know, it was a comedy, great sort of old
Ealing comedy, lady killers feel to it. Absolutely
ignored it. Yeah, there's been some, good movies,
but I would say, yeah, you've got Transformers
3, Thor, Captain America, X -Men First Class,
Tower Heist. You know, they're my five picks
of 2011, I think. Oh, come on, I've got to make
it top 10. I've just, as I'm sitting here thinking,
snap into my head, come some more. Rise of the
Planet of the Apes. That's got to be in there.
That's got to be in the top 10 somewhere. That
is a fantastic, fantastic movie that I think
does justice to the original films. in a way
that Burton's version never did. It takes those
original films into account and pays homage to
them and is obviously a prequel to them. It's
a fantastic movie. James Franco is amazing. The
work done by Andy Serkis and the special effects
guys needs to be praised up to the wall. Some
amazing work really brought life to Caesar. Yay.
Fantastic movie, if you haven't seen that, I
would definitely recommend you check that out.
The blue ray looks gorgeous as well, that's that
blue ray. Another film from my top ten. Going
on a bit of a horror angle, Tucker and Dale vs
Evil. A film that seems to be in production forever.
We were hearing about it on the net, must have
been for at least a couple of years. It's going
to be Tyler Levine and Alan Tudyk. Two great
comedy guys, Tyler Levine from Reaper, Alan Tudyk
from Firefly. who doesn't travel as free as the
camp assistant of Sector 7 guy who I can't remember
now. But yeah, Tucker Noah's Evil, it's a horror
film, but it's a comedy. It's a very black comedy.
It's gory, but it's a black comedy. Two guys,
normal, regular guys who get mistaken by a bunch
of city folk for being these inbred psycho killers.
And these city folk think that they've bumped
off a friend, they haven't, they've rescued her,
they try and rescue a friend back and start accidentally
killing themselves. And all the while they think
it's these two guys, they're complete psycho
serial killers, you know, the cliched country
bumpkin in a forest sort of thing. But they're
not, they're just two regular joes who are trying
to be really helpful. So yeah, that's definitely
on my radar. Sticking with the horror themes,
I will say... I saw a film at Frye Fest this
year, which is a big UK horror festival. called
The Theatre Bazaar, which is put out by Severin
Films. Severin may not do a lot of DVD and Blu
-ray releases, but it's an anthology. It stars
Udo Kier, David Rochon, Virginia Newcombe, Katrina
McCall, who was in the classic 80s Italian horrors,
like footy stuff, you know. It's directed by
Richard Stanley, Buddy Giovinizzo, how do you
pronounce that in the iron? Tom Sabini, Douglas
Book, Kareem Hussain, David Gregory and Jeremy
Caston. It's sick, it's twisted. Kareem Hussain's
thing is way off the wall with the women in juxtra
eyeballs. But, if you like horror, it's going
to fly under everybody's radar, I think, and
it's not going to get a big push. So I think
you should definitely try checking that out.
Also on the UK radar, it probably didn't make
that much of a splash in the States though, I
think. would be the big screen outing of a TV
show available here called The Inbetweeners.
It's about four kids at high school. It sure
is about four kids at high school. They're all
a bit nerdy and they'll get picked on. They all
think they're better than they are but they're
not really. And the movie expands on that to
the end of the year. They decide to go out to
Ibiza and pick up girls and whatnot and it just
all goes horribly, horribly wrong. Obviously
being a happy -go -lucky film, you know, we get
the typical happy ending at the end, but for
the most part they really do get themselves in
the most terrible situations. It's full of basically
nobbing tit jokes, but it's funny as hell. You
know, most of my picks this year, besides the
superhero movies, would have to be the horror
flicks. I mean I've seen a lot of good horror
this year. I still haven't seen Drive, I've had
my hands up to that. It's terrible I know. But
I would say out of every film I've seen, every
film I've seen this year, my pick for the year
is yet again a horror film. It's a film again
I saw at Fright Fest written and directed by
the Pierce Brothers, Brett and Drew Pierce. It's
called Dead Heads. It's a zombie. it's like a
zombie comedy about two slackers who awake in
the middle of a zombie apocalypse the thing is
they're also zombies they don't know they're
zombies but they are it's kind of Shaun of the
Dead meets John Hughes but I enjoyed it as much
as I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead you know I'm a
big fan of Shaun of the Dead it's on a par with
that but it's thinking more as somebody's gone,
John Hughes, what if John Hughes made a zombie
romance? And then threw in a bit of Romero. That's
what you've got. Solid script, full references
to 80s movies. Totally reminiscent of Night of
the Creeps, if you've seen that one, it's a great
film. And yeah, fantastic movie. It's probably
gonna add again, it's probably gonna rub in Flanders
with its radar, but my pick for 2011 movie of
the year, Deadheads. Go and see it. I don't know.
I think it's going out on video demand in the
States. We are getting it released in the UK
here on DVD and Blu -ray, I think in January.
Yeah, if you can track that one down, it's Deadheads
from the Pierce Brothers. That would be my pick
for the year, as far as movies is concerned.
As for everything else, you know, it's been a
pretty good year for video games and what not.
I mean, video games for me is always going to
be on Triton 3. Every year on Triton, I'm filling
games out on Triton 3. This year, it's the game
for me. Of course, followed by, I'd say, Dodonpachi
Resurrection, which is a cave bullet hell shooter.
That's a fantastic game. If you haven't checked
that out, that's on Xbox 360. I think it's on
PS3 as well. Surprisingly, the new Rayman game,
that was really good. If you haven't checked
that out yet, I would definitely consider that
one. But I'd say, I wasn't a big fan of Batman
this year. Batman didn't do it for me. I don't
know what it was. It was just something, the
original Batman Half -West Island, I went crazy
with that game. But this year, Batman didn't
do that much for me. Yeah, for me, it's definitely
Uncharted 3, game of the year. You know, the
other big game name, Dead Island, didn't like
that. Batman was okay and didn't really feel
it that much. Some surprises in there. I mean,
I really like the Warhammer 40K game that came
out. Space Marine, which was amazing and the
real surprise of this year to be honest with
you was the new Driver game, Driver San Francisco
from Ubisoft I'm not a big driving game fan,
I love being that I'm not a big sandbox game
fan Driver San Francisco mixes both of those
genres together in a game that I absolutely adore
I've been playing that solid when that came out
I played that game solid too You know, from playing
the demo to playing the actual game, I have no
problems with anything in that game. I swear
it's an amazing game. You should definitely check
that out. On the handheld front, of course, we've
got Super Mario Land 3D, another game which,
to be honest with you, I haven't stopped playing
since the game out. I've been on the special
levels now. I've played Luigi and whatnot. It's
fantastic. It harkens back to The classic Super
Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World on the SNES.
Fantastic game, as is Mario Kart 7, you know.
Again, that I think harks back to the original
Mario Kart, Super Mario Kart on the SNES. Throws
in little extras, the submarine levels, the flying
bits, you know. Great game, it's Nintendo's back
on form with those two. And things like the iPad.
I've been playing, another game I've been playing
quite a lot. Joyride, which is a... Endless run
of game, you're literally just flying the jetpack
collecting coins and doing missions, you know,
collecting so many coins, you've got to spin
past something, you know, get past some missiles.
It's simple, addictive, and I've been playing
it on both my iPhone and my iPad. It really is
a fun game. I think I've played it on more than
any other game this year, I think, on the iPad.
I was playing... I think I've pretty much covered
it on the movies and games front. I mean it could
go into TV, but for me this year TV's been terrible.
The only game, the only TV show I would say that
I've really enjoyed has been The Franklin and
the Bash. So much so that I bought the DVD box
set when it came out. Yeah, there's nothing,
there's nothing screened out in me for line of
TV this year. It's been about, this year's, 2011
I would say it has been about video games. Video
games have made, has been more fun had than video
games be there on, you know, PS3, Xbox, 3DS,
you know, iPhone, iPad, Android, PSP, you know.
There's been more fun had on those consoles this
year than I think in any TV show out there. Movie
wise, it's been a good year. It's not been a
fantastic year, it's been a good year. I think
3D I'm sure there's a day out now. It's just
bumping up ticket prices for films that don't
really need 3D. But, you know, the cinema experience,
I've enjoyed that this year. I've done a lot
more viewing films at the cinema rather than
at home, and that's actually brought a bit more
joy back into my movie watching. So yeah, that's
just some of my picks as part of the Ecast Radio
Network's year -end review piece, and I hope
we shall see you next year. But for now, bye

contributing their Moments in the year of GI
Joe Even though they pretty much threw me under
the bus. Thanks a lot jackasses. That's why Transformers
is better than Joe And Phil from Blogamatic 3000
Michael had Michael Wilson has been a huge component
of getting film more on the show and We figured
since we're doing these year -end things now
that we would include Phil and seeing what his,
because a lot of these countdown things that
we do, one of the things I like is that we have
so many varying opinions and Phil is just yet
another voice that we can throw into the mix.
Because he's not always going to pick what we
might and vice versa. So thank you to both of
those networks for contributing to the year -end
show. You guys Steve Kevin or Michael you guys
have anything else you want to say before I close
this out Happy New Year. Yeah, Happy New Year
