About this Episode

Mike and Michael celebrate Rock Sugar's Christmas mashup that blends Metallica and Journey with original holiday lyrics. They discuss Jess Harnell's impressive vocal impressionism, what makes Rock Sugar's mashup concept so unique, and share their own unconventional Christmas music playlists. The hosts also touch on Chuck Duran's voice acting work and his free demo consultation service.

You're listening to the GeekCast Radio Network.

Keep it right here. Yes, that's right. We here

at GeekCast Radio are celebrating the holiday

season. I'm sorry. I have to st - I can't do

this. Merry Christmas, damn it. That's what it

fucking is. Ho ho ho! Oh god. So yes, IMTF Joe

and Mike. Joining me is Pecan Court Michael.

Hey, how's it going? It's going and... this is

something we've never done yes I did that giant

music spotlight this year but we've never actually

just done a single GCR episode for one song but

this kind of warrants it because it is it is

the holiday season it is Christmas time and our

favorite band or one of our favorite bands Rock

Sugar released a Christmas mashup Everyone should

know by now who Rock Sugar is. Jess Harnell leads

singer, Chuck Duran, Alex Track. These guys released

Reimaginator and it's essentially the metal of

the 80s meets the pop lyrics of the 80s, you

know, stuff like... Metallica's enter Sandman

meets journeys. Don't stop believing so don't

stop the Sandman What was the story? It was a

rock band that was stranded in the 80s They were

trapped on an island with the heavy metal riffs,

but with a like a 13 year old girl's Song lyrics

from the 80s. I forget what it was. Nothing to

listen to but an iPod from a 13 year old girl

who listened to pop songs from the 80s Right

right yeah, that would suck go go to rock sugar

band calm you can read the story but but no they

At least for me they knocked me on my ass for

this Christmas because they came out with don't

stop the Santa man It's very clever really it's

it's very clever it is because essentially you

take their origin well, it's not I guess technically

it would be their original song, even though

it's a mashup of Journey and Metallica. It's

pretty original. I mean, it's, you know, it's,

I guess. Don't Stop the Sandman. Yeah. So they

took that song and put Christmas lyrics behind

it. And it even has in the middle of it, it has

jingle bells going through the Metallica riffs

and the Journey riffs. It's so great. It's so

amazing But no, I I heard it and I was like,

oh my god, this is so awesome. I Think if you're

music ever if you're not a fan of rock sugar,

it's gonna sound a little off Yeah, because it's

not like Don't stop the Sandman Everyone knows

this song by Metallica and everyone knows this

song by Journey and it's like, oh my god You

got your chocolate in my peanut butter but Yeah,

if you've never heard that song before then this

song may sound a little off because it's got

the riffs from Metallica and the riffs from Journey

Journey, but it's got Christmas All original

lyrics. Yeah, they're very original You don't

expect to hear them there Yeah, no. But seriously,

okay, I can see someone not liking a cover band.

I can see someone not liking certain covers of

certain songs. But as you just said, the Rock

Sugar thing, when they broke out, it was so unique

and so interesting. And it was something that,

to my knowledge, has never been done before.

And Jess Harnell is such a talent. I mean, it's

not like... They're a cover band and they suck

because that guy sounds nothing like James Hetfield,

you know Oh, it's it's actually a guy who does

in the impression of the singer. It sounds like

that band singing I Swear to God when I first

heard don't stop the same man. I was like, hey

Steve Perry It is weird and the thing is he does

it on every song Yeah, he does it on every end.

Yeah. What is the strangest thing about Jess

Harnell, and we love him to death here at the

Geek Cast Radio Network, the strangest thing

about him is his impressionist skills for female

singers. You shook me like a prayer, the ACDC

Madonna cover. That just, it's so... It still

sounds like just her now But I mean like like

going from the AC DC hard lyrics of Me all night

long. The inflection is there a prayer, right?

Yeah acting right? Yes acting it is a profession.

He's really good at it. Yes But no, don't stop

the Santa man. Oh my god you guys If you are

fans of Rock Sugar, you will love this. If you're

not fans of Rock Sugar, first of all, what the

hell is wrong with you? Go to RockSugarBand .com,

check them out. You can find pretty much all

of their songs from the Reimaginator album on

YouTube, or you can go to their Facebook page.

It's just, it's so great. It's impressive stuff,

it really is. It is, yeah. And I don't know what...

You're all's traditions in the Wilson house are

for for Christmas music for me. You're all's.

Yeah. Shut the hell up, David. For me, I am more

so to hell with tradition. Yes, I still like

all the classic Christmas songs, but my Christmas

playlist consists of like stuff from Bob Rivers

and his Comedy Corporation, Jeff Dunham's Christmas

stuff. uh... just something that is to find out

be did not you know old -timey old -time i can't

buy that so this is a lot of is on your christmas

list of no no okay well yes this doesn't include

the older holly jolly christmas all it does but

i'm i'm i'm saying stuff like uh... just those

classic carols that just sound like it's a chorus

and it's not, you know, sounds like, you know,

your, your local church choir with a 13 year

old boy in it and all the time, whatever else.

And he's high up here like this. Sounds like

crap. But no, I'm actually looking at my, I'm

looking at my Christmas playlist that I put together

for, for last year and this year. Uh, on here

I've got, um, as I said, Bob Rivers, um, The

Jeff Dunham don't come home for Christmas Christmas

album that he released a couple years ago Phineas

and Ferb Christmas stuff. So I've got that on

here. There you go. Yes. This man has taste let

me tell you. Yeah, right And actually the you

don't have a grandma got run over by a reindeer

Yeah, that's on here too. The the timeless Christmas

classic baby got back by Sir Mix -A -Lot. No

No, that's what I want for Christmas But Bob

Rivers is the guy that came up with the 12 pains

of Christmas, so that's that's a really awesome

song, but yes, I do also have Burl Ives and Holly

Jolly Christmas and silver and gold and pretty

much anything from the Rudolph specials have

Okay, we just got those on DVD. So I the kids

have been watching over and over and over again

You know the stop -motion stuff from the 60s

and yeah become reacquainted That's awesome money

anyway, but back to Justin Chuck yeah It's just

it's just so awesome. Yeah they have they have

done such an amazing job with this song and I'm

hoping now they actually before this song Rock

Sugar started playing new stuff at their shows.

They have not released a new album yet, but they've

started playing new stuff for their shows. When

I talked to the interview I did with Chuck Duran

and Stacey J. Aswad from Veo Buzz Weekly, in

that interview, there's Highway to... I don't

there's I've heard that was two songs there was

two songs in that interview that that Rock Sugar

is playing at their shows that they have not

put on an album yet so there is gonna be new

stuff coming I assume especially with don't stop

the Santa man I'm sure they're gonna be you know

continuing to kick ass and and all that good

stuff so you know what I actually I I know Christmas

is coming up and since we're talking about Jess

I just want to throw it out there I Really would

like to and I'm sure a lot of people agree with

me here or wouldn't like this too But I would

really like to be invited to Jess Harnell's Christmas

party That would be have you heard about these?

Yes, this is insane. He's actually got all these

people from the rock genre all these you know

classic rock Not classic rock, but you know rock

icons and then he mixes those up with voice acting

icons, so you'll end up with like Rob Paulson

and I don't know that one guy from Aerosmith

or something and they'll be in the same room

mixing it up. There you go, it could be one of

those guys. I've never been there myself, but

from what I understand, A, he's got a really

cool house and B, he fills it with these amazing

people and then he serves eggnog. Cookies and

I'm thinking I like eggnog and cookies I'd like

to be there. It would be really cool Just throw

it out there and you know Chuck's no slouch and

either I if I had any reason at all to try voice

acting which I won't because I stutter and I

have a horrible voice, but if I did I Would I

would go to LA and and pay the money to have

Chuck Duran do my demo reel? Yeah, because this

is just this is terribly talented guy that goes

beyond his rock sugar work. Oh No, yeah, Chuck

is just so amazing. He produces demos for anyone

You know, he he actually is so very cool of him

What he does is I actually looked at his website

demos that rock calm He allows a free consultation

to sit down and talk with you whether it be over

Skype whether it be in person whatever and discuss

with you where you want your demo to go and if

you and he would feel that putting a professional

demo together would be right at this time for

your voiceover career and it's a free consultation

before you have to put up any money and it's

so awesome. What he and You know jess and rock

sugar and all the all the voice actors are doing

these days, you know chuck especially with you

know him and stacy doing veal buzz weekly and

And just everything that these people do is just

amazing. Yeah, it just is So cool. So lifelong

fans here Oh, yes, most definitely Yeah, so if

you haven't heard this song yet go seek it out.

I've put it on my twitter I've put it on my facebook.

Uh, I actually got a response back from uh...

rock sugar on my not the face book a post book

from a twitter post which is a post yeah which

was cool that was nice of them uh... i i favorited

it because you know as you do uh... i'm sure

you put it on your twitter and your facebook

yeah oh yeah no i uh... i shared uh... don't

stop the santa man on my personal facebook on

my fan page on the gcrn fan page and it it's

i'd made sure anywhere i had you know not necessarily

ownership over but control over using and you

know being anywhere I could share it I shared

it because it's just it's such it's cool you

know it's a it's a fun little song it's you know

it's funny it's especially especially this year

not really to date this but we are doing this

in 2012 and especially with what just happened

in Connecticut No, I'm not trying to drag it

down. I'm just saying that with this, them releasing

this song now, it makes you really... It's got

to make you smile. Yeah, it's got to make you

smile. It's a really happy, funny song. And according

to Chuck, I have permission, so... to use the

song in this in this happy new year uh do you

have any other parting words you'd like to say

uh you know i have happy holidays from the wilson

family uh be on the lookout eventually for the

uh Next episode of roll the rescue bots, which

may or may not mention anything about Jess for

now In 2018 ladies and gentlemen, that's the

way it's looking actually, you know what? It's

funny. I just wrote the Christmas letter the

Wilson Christmas letter, which I'll be posting

on the website after Christmas, but for anybody

interested Dry boring reading you don't want

to read anything But it's funny is that I mentioned

the podcast and I go man. I only did five of

those I really maybe I shouldn't even mention

that at all I don't know. I kind of failed at

that. What's so funny is you guys put your Christmas

letter out after Christmas. Well, no, I mail

them out to friends and family. And then after

the fact, like the day after Christmas, I will

post it to the website so that people can see

it. If you weren't privileged enough to actually

get a stamped envelope from me with pictures

of my kids in it, then you can still see it online.

That's awesome. All right, ladies and gentlemen,

you're in for a treat. Here we go. Don't stop

the Santa man rock sugar We will catch you next

time. Oh, I don't do it as good as he does
