GeekCastRadio .com presents GeekCast Radio Special

Episode Artist Spotlight Online with your hosts,

Mike TFG1 Blanchard and JT from Saskatoon. Hello

and welcome to Geekcast Radio. This is yet another

artist spotlight here in the epic music spotlight

that we're doing at GCR. I am one of your hosts,

TFG1 Mike, and joining me is JT from Saskatoon.

Hello. Good afternoon, sir. How are you? I'm

well. Thank you for asking. Awesome. Today we

are going to be talking about that existential

band used to be lead singer Ed Kowalczyk with

Live. Oh boy. I hope you guys have a long commute

or have X amount of hours to kill because this

is going to be a long episode because there's

a lot to discuss with Live. There just is So

why don't you? Tell us how you first started

or stopped listening to live sir Well, I first

became aware of the band when I was living with

a couple of my friends back home in Yorkton for

a while my one roommate Curtis was a huge live

fan like this is when he says he's into a band

he's into a band so much so that you want to

back away slowly when he starts talking about

them. You know, it's kind of like he, he almost,

he gets this attitude like he's a Vietnam vet

and when he starts talking about the band, you

don't know if he's back in, if he's just telling

a story, if he's actually there in the NAMM again.

And after a while, he just kind of wore me down

because I was like, yeah, live. Yeah, that's

great. Yeah. And then I actually sat and I listened

to the distance to hear. Which really like I

did a total 180 and we would actually sit and

talk about that album and about the music now

From there on like I got I listened to like and

I actually ended up Picking up the distance to

hear and I only I had that for years. It wasn't

until about two or three years ago That I was

going through a garage sale here in Saskatoon

and there's like a bunch of CDs and I picked

ended up picking up on a Distance here was it

five? Which was the out of the follow -up album

to the distance to here, right? And I just kind

of got back into the band a bit. I love the bands

like they've got this I if I were to describe

the band there a little bit They're kind of equal

parts Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against

the Machine. At times, they're listed on the

wiki as alternative post -grunge, but they've

got this funk to them. They've got this funk

sound in a lot of their music that's very reminiscent

of the Chili Peppers, but they also have this

growl, they've got this edge in a lot of their

music. that is very reminiscent of, you know,

the musical stylings of Rage Against the Machine.

Right. Although maybe not as much the political

aspects. Yeah. But, you know, I love the band.

Again, I only have the two albums, but I mean,

you know, Mike's provided me with the listening

material as he is one to do in these spotlights.

Yes. Right. God, I can't hear you. I apologized

on the 12 stones episode. Can you just let me

live in peace? No, not at all. But I did. The

newer stuff that I heard on the clips that Micah

sent me, I'm really diggin' it. Yeah. And, you

know, maybe when the new album's coming out,

is it out already, or? No, we'll get to that.

I'm looking for you. I'll see when the new stuff

comes out. We'll give a listen to it on iTunes

and see maybe we'll pick that up, too. We'll

see. Yeah. For me, I did not find them until

2000. I was, as I said in the 12 Stones episode,

between December of 99 and March of 2001, I was

living in Biloxi, Mississippi at the time, Biloxi,

Gulfport, Mississippi, between those two towns

because I lived in both towns within the two

-year period. And one of my things wherever I'm

living at the time back then, because I was so

starstruck, like if I would start listening to

a morning radio show, I love morning radio. I

used to love morning radio DJs. Whatever town

I was in, whatever station I was listening to,

I would call in and be a avid call in person.

every morning, or I'd call in and request something

every morning, or if they said something that

I wanted to respond to, I would call in and whatever

else. But I always like getting close to the

morning radio show DJs. More so, I don't know

why. Maybe it's because I'm an early person where

I'm usually up from 5 .30 to 7 .30 a .m. Usually

I'm up between that time frame where I used to

be anyway. And, you know, I just like getting

close to them because at the time and still to

this day, even though podcasting is the new radio,

at least in my opinion, I always wanted to at

least work at a radio station. I didn't care

what the job was. I didn't, you know, not necessarily

had to be on air. I just wanted to be in that

atmosphere of, you know, hanging out with those

awesome people. Yeah. And I heard I alone. on

97 .9 WCPR in Biloxi, Mississippi, I heard I

Alone. And then I heard Lightning Crashes and

Selling the Draw. I heard a lot of stuff off

of Throwing Copper. And that's really where that

album is where I really kind of got to know them.

But I didn't really start getting into them until

five. 5 was the first album that I actually bought.

So that's how I got into them. I knew nothing

of Mental Jewelry, which was their debut. It

was their debut, basically, wasn't it? Yeah.

Mental Jewelry is essentially their debut. But

even before then, they had a couple of EPs. In

1990, they released Divided Mind, Divided Planet.

In 1991, they released something called Four

Songs, which, according to Wikipedia, it essentially

has Operation Spirit, which was on mental jewelry,

has Good Pain, Heaven Wore a Shirt, and Negation.

Until I saw this on Wikipedia, I knew nothing

of these two EPs at all. Again, I started out

listening to them through the throwing copper

stuff from 94. So For me and mental jewelry,

I really I actually only have bought two songs

off that album Pain lives of pain lies on the

riverside and the beauty of gray Absolutely.

Love those two songs the rest of the album. I

Just couldn't get into it Yeah Why is that? I

don't know. It just wasn't my thing at the time.

And again, I think it was because I was going

backwards from throwing copper. Like Pain Lies

on the Riverside and Beauty of Grey have similar

sounds to what is on throwing copper, as far

as the sound of a song. And I like that. The

rest of it, it's just a little too strange for

me. When we get to throwing copper, I mean, tons

of singles on this, you know, Selling the Drama,

I Alone, Lightning Crashes, All Over You, White

Discussion, I Alone and Lightning Crashes, those

two songs, Lightning Crashes specifically, that

song was everywhere. Oh, God, yes. I mean, I

love that song. Like it's one of my favorite

live songs that I've ever heard, but it's kind

of like how we were talking about how you remind

me on the Nickelback episode. It's either want

to smash your radio or, you know, cram potatoes

in your ears because you just don't want to hear

it anymore. Well, what? See, for me, it's well,

I do agree with that. but it's for me it's a

little bit different with live because actually

up until before we recorded this episode you

know the three weeks before we recorded the episode

i actually was scrambling to because i only i

when my computer went belly up a couple years

ago I essentially lost all of the music that

I actually imported off of CDs and I no longer

have the CDs. Oh damn. So I had to, you know,

scrimp and save and, you know, have enough money

to buy all of my live tracks. Not all of them,

but a good majority of them. I had to, you know,

buy all of them back from iTunes. And for me

with Lightning Crashes is it surprises me where

that song shows up. We all know, or at least

most people should know, if you don't know, here's

your information. Trailers? Like movie trailers?

The director of said, you know, take Iron Man.

Jon Favreau had nothing to do with the marketing

campaign. on Iron Man has nothing to do with

putting a theatrical trailer together, you know,

Marvel and whoever else, Paramount or whoever,

sends that out to a company that does that kind

of stuff and, you know, cobbles all that footage

together and, you know, puts a song behind it.

When I heard Lightning Crashes in the rookie

trailer, the Dennis Quaid rookie movie, I was

like, hell yeah, it's live. That's awesome. Yeah.

You know, it's one of those things. but no throwing

copper all of those songs that I mentioned are

all all great and again it you know it goes back

to what we've said with 12 stones and what I've

said about Bush and what you know all that where

I like certain songs here and there but as a

whole album I remember listening to it back in

the day I just couldn't get into like the first

three songs damn another Creek song the drama

I alone great I got to Iris I was like This isn't,

I don't know, this just isn't hooking me. Lightning

crashes, great. Top, eh. All over you, great.

Shit town, TBD, stage, waitress, Pillar of Davidson,

a white discussion, and horse. I just, just couldn't

get into them. Do you have any thoughts on throwing

copper? Might have to try and track this down

check out the rest of the album because like

I said the only song I know off of there is lightning

crashes and like I Never even realized like I've

seen that trailer for the rookie I can't I Can't

believe I didn't recognize that song when I saw

that trailer man. I Was like, yeah, that's a

good song and now I'm just like holy shit Yeah,

holy shit, it's live! That just sounds weird.

And ladies and gentlemen, live! And everyone's

like, and? You know, from New York it's Saturday

night? Live on stage? I mean, live on stage,

that could potentially turn into, like, a Castella

routine right there. Yeah, lightning crash is

great song. It's that the next album is the one

that I know the most about so oh really Wow,

that's that that's interesting because The next

album is at the time When I was just finding

out about them is was the least I knew about

The only thing I knew off of the next album,

which is a secret Samadhi I think is how you

say it or somebody not not that I was thinking

of Distance. I was thinking of Distance, yeah.

No, I know all about Distance, but Secret Samadhi

was released. When the hell was it released?

Third album, debuted number one on the Billboard

200, was released February 18th, 1997. This album,

at the time when it was released, the only thing

I'd ever heard of off of it was Turn My Head.

And Turn My Head is... It's not the best live

song ever, at all. It just isn't. It's an okay

song, but it's just not, it's... But Lacanee's

Juice, Rattlesnake, Century, Ghost, and Insomnia,

and The Hole in the Universe are the tracks that

I like off of this one. Now, Rattlesnake and

Ghost... Had these on I had these Rattlesnake

ghost and insomnia in the in the whole universe

those three songs I Constantly played those while

I was reading Nicholas Evans the smoke jumper

I don't know why but I just did and the the track

for century has one of the funniest lines in

a song that I've ever heard. Our piss tastes

like beer. Everybody's here. I don't know. It's

just such a weird lyric to have in a song. I

don't know. I don't know what Ed Kowalczyk was

smoking when he wrote that. He was smoking something

all right. Oh yes, most definitely. But no, you

know, like I said rattlesnake lacanies juice

century ghost and insomnia in the whole universe

of the tracks I like off of this one Again, not

an album I can listen to straightforward all

the way through I don't know. I just didn't connect

with any of the other tracks No, honestly off

of Secret Samadhi here, I was aware of Turn My

Head Honestly, that's the only one that I really

recall ever hearing off of this. And so, unfortunately,

I cannot comment further. Although, if you like

Rattlesnake so much, I might have to go on YouTube

and find that one later. Oh man, Rattlesnake.

The ones I suggest from Secret Samadhi is Rattlesnake,

Lacanee's Juice, Century Ghost and insomnia in

the whole universe those those all those tracks

are great Absolutely love all So moving on to

1999 We have the distance to here What an album

Amen, brother. What a fucking album. Oh my god

No, this like I said, this is the first one I

ever owned like I said It's the Dolphins cry

run to the water I think the other one and a

lot of people At least friends friends of mine

that are fans alive You like that song was meltdown

We're probably my top three off of this. Yeah.

I mean the Dolphins cry again, it's There is

There is so much passion in that song it's It's

striking, you know, especially when you sit there

and you listen to Paul chick singing Yeah, cuz

they're like he really put it out there on that

song. I think that's probably I'm gonna say that's

probably my all -time favorite Live song Yeah,

I mean, um with with this album The first six

songs, absolutely love them all. Dolphins Cry,

The Distance, Sparkle, Run to the Water, Sun,

and Voodoo Lady is just amazing. Voodoo Lady

is just like, oh my god, I can't believe they

sang that song. The only other three tracks I

like off of this one, I'll have to go back and

listen to Meltdown. But they stood up for love

we walk in the dream and dance with you. I like

I like those three and honestly the three like

as far as singles off of this really are The

Dolphins cry I run to the water and they stood

up for love they stood up for love was amazing

It just is and you know great album overall I

mean I remember when this came out I remember

actually owning it and I remember listening to

it all the way through but as I've I guess gotten

older I only like the certain songs off of it

yeah it's just one of those things where the

others as I said before I just couldn't connect

with them yeah like you're speaking about Voodoo

Lady there like I didn't like that song like

it had It had a little bit of that funk that

had that funkiness to it that I spoke of earlier

Yeah, it's it's a good song. But you know it

again. It's not like There's something says something

about Dolphins Cry the way Kowalczyk was singing

on that and he's just kind of pouring himself

into the song, right? You know great like I said

voodoo lady. It's a good song It's just it's

not a great song the way Dolphins Cry was at

least on this album Oh, right. No, no, no, no.

Yeah, no, no, no. No, I'm not saying that Dolphin's

Cry is any less better. What I'm saying is like

out of the other tracks on this that aren't singles,

Sparkle, The Distance, which is essentially the

title track, The Distance, Sparkle, Son, and

Voodoo Lady are my other favorites that are not,

you know, the singles. Voodoo Lady essentially

is them telling a story about Hookers in New

Orleans or someone, you know getting a hooker

and I mean it sounds like something that would

happen at Mardi Gras It's it involves a prostitute.

Yes Like that. Yes. Yes, it does But overall

it's you know, it's a great album. But like I

said, you know, if I don't connect with a song

I won't listen to it. Yeah. No, I get that you

know, so and Then we go to 2001 with five Very

sad history with this album. The collection of

songs that became Five was never intended to

be released as an album. Guitarist Chad Taylor

said the goal was to prepare songs for the next

studio session. MCA got a hold of the material

and pushed us to call it an album. The songs

were originally going to be released free to

fans as a collection called Ecstatic Fanatic.

5 only reached number 22 on the album chart in

the US and failed to attain gold status despite

reasonably positive reviews. Deep Enough was

intended to be the album's first single until

the record company overruled the band and released

Simple Creed instead. This just goes to show

you, and the record company with this, the label

was radioactive, but it was also done through

MCA. First of all, how do people at a record

company get a hold of material if you had just

finished, I mean, unless someone in your group

that was in there in the recording studio said,

hey, here's, I don't even know. How does a record

company get a hold of stuff? Like as soon as

you finish recording it, you know what I mean

that I Mean, we'll definitely speak of this later,

but there is one Exceptional Individual in this

bad that could be blamed for that. Um Yeah, we'll

get to that a way later in this episode. Yeah.

Let's let's music first before we get into the

drama No, I dug simple Creed the title track,

the first single. I much prefer Deep Enough.

Yeah. I think I saw the trailer to Fast and the

Furious and I heard this song in the trailer

and they actually used it in the movie. They

used it in one scene and that's how I had to

go out and buy this album. This is the album

where I started listening to every single track

from live. I can listen to all, technically 15

tracks because Deep Enough was a, there was a

remix bonus track of it, but really it's only

14 tracks. You know, you got an intro which was

done by Ed Kowalczyk and Tricky. Simple Creed.

Which was done by ed koala chicken tricky deep

enough like a soldier people like you Transmit

your love forever may not be long enough. Call

me a fool flow. I believe flow has I Think it's

flow has um, what's his name Adam? Oh god the

dude that sings the lead singer counting crows

Adam Duritz or yeah Yeah, I think he's on that

track. I think he is on that track singing with

them. The Ride, Nobody Knows, Okay, Overcome,

Hero of Love, and as I said before, the Deep

Enough remix. But no, I mean, this album was

just amazing. I can listen to this album over

and over and over again, all the way through,

and I love every single track. They're just so

well done. No, I love the album on a whole like

I love all the songs, but yeah, it's specifically

I think deep enough would be like my lead single

off of this I also liked For what it was I liked

flow It wasn't necessarily my favorite I love

the ride and okay Yeah, or probably my other

two favorites on that forever me be or may not

be long enough that one I didn't really like

it and I can't exactly explain why because the

song, it's something about the music and the

lyrics. It just irritated me. I don't know why

it's something about that particular song. It

just, it was like that mosquito buzzing around

your head when you're half asleep. It's just,

just fuck off. I just can't dig that song. I

don't know why. Clearly, I have emotional damage,

but that's beside the point. Okay, you know what?

I told you the last episode might quit digging

on Canada. For me, I like all the tracks. The

ones I can listen to the most is Transmit Your

Love. Overcome, Hero of Love, I like Flow in

the Ride as well. I do like Simple Creed and

Deep Enough, but Transmit Your Love and Overcome

and Hero of Love would be the three main ones.

Now Overcome actually has a unique history because

it became associated with the September 11th

attacks. in the united states proceeds from the

sale of the single word donated to charities

to benefit the victims of the attacks so that

was um that was very nice of of the band to do

that yeah they certainly you know there's no

bad i would say there's no bad publicity basically

right yeah now this was thank god this wasn't

Live had so much of a better release date for

this. It was released one week after September

11th attacks. So it was September 18th, 2001

versus Nickelback who released theirs on the

actual day. Anything a month before and for like

three or four months after September 11th. everything

within that that five -month time frame you know

everything's connected to sound I'm not not you

know no we're not not no but like when we when

we did the Nickelback show and I and need neither

one of us realized it because I had never really

paid attention to the actual release date of

silver side up and when we found that out was

like oh my god you know With tracks on this as

I said before the remix of deep enough was featured

in in the fast and furious Yeah, forever may

not be long enough was featured in the movie

the mummy returns plays during the end credits

and Overcome was featured in season 2 of the

shield in episode 13 dominoes falling I love

the shield was one of the best shows FX has ever

done If I might speak blue for a moment, you

don't fuck with Vic Mackie. Oh no. No, no, no,

no. Not at all. But when I... I don't know if

I was half asleep at the end of that episode

when it originally aired or what, but as soon

as I heard Overcome come on the end credits,

I'm like, live? On the shield? Hell yeah! Yeah.

That was so awesome. But V, front to back. Great

album. Absolutely love it And then we go to 2003

May 20th 2003 to be exact with birds of prey

You know a funny story behind this one At the

time I had spent about I don't know three months

or so Talking on the phone with this girl that

I had met over the internet. Yes, I know whatever

it was the it was the thing of the times back

then um and we had agreed you know i mean talking

on the phone for three months you know and you

know sending emails and everything else you know

you you know you think you know you have some

sort of connection so i actually she she she

lived here in kentucky she actually lived in

bowling green which is about an hour away from

me um Took the bus down there at the time. I

was 23. She was 28 and I've never really made

that you know Much of a deal about an age difference.

I mean a five -year age difference to me is not

that big of a deal Obviously as long as you're

legal yeah, you know that I want to make sure

I make clear And you know, I was so stoked for

this album The local radio station here had a

thing called Crank It or Spank It every night,

and local rock station, because the Top 40 station

could not get away with that. But they played

Heaven, the first single off this, and they're

like, hey, Crank It or Spank It. And I called

in and said, of course, Crank It. So I went down

there to Bowling Green, and we got to hanging

out. and everything else and long story short

apparently the age difference meant you know

was more of a big issue for her than it was for

me because I had told her this you know tell

her stories about my life and I told the story

about in 86 when I was six years old I met David

Hasselhoff and you know as soon as I finished

telling the story she immediately gets up and

goes over to you know start you know doing stuff

on her computer I'm like what's wrong When you

were six, I was 12 like okay. I thought you said

the age difference wasn't a problem Well, apparently

it is well This whole big deal the whole the

whole great thing about this out of this is she

actually before all this had happened She had

actually bought me the album Really yeah, so

it was Labor Day weekend 2003 shortest trip ever

but But no, Birds of Prey, a lot of people say

that it's not that great. Again, this is one

of those ones where I like every song off this.

Birds of Prey, again, I have heard a few of the

tracks off of here, not just the clip you sent

me. Right. But I'd have to say probably, like

you said, Runaway I liked because they had the

You know, it's basically featured with Shelby

Lynn who's a country artist. I've always kind

of had appreciation for I just love her voice,

you know, and I thought she worked pretty well

with Koalczyk on that track. Yeah, but aside

from that I think the only and it's not Like

I've heard of at least half the tracks. I think

probably the first half Up to and including sweet

release. I think the other one I liked was heaven

Right. Yeah haven't just kind of you know, again,

it's one of those songs that When it when you

like it you like it you just can't explain how

Exactly. Yeah, you know and and I love I love

that song I just I do it's I couldn't tell you

exactly why you know, it's the music it's the

lyrics Kowalczyk, you know wasn't particularly

nutty that day. I don't know Love that song man,

you know lighthouse to I do remember lighthouse

in doing my research because you know, I just

Google a track list and see what I can find on

YouTube and Lighthouse was okay. But again, I'd

say probably my two favorites off of this was

heaven and runaway For me as I said a second

ago, I like it all. Yeah There are certain ones

more than others but Overall, the entire album,

front to back, is great. Running down the track

list here, you have Heaven, which is the lead

single, She, The Sanctity of Dreams, Run Away,

Life Marches On, Like I Do, Sweet Release, Every

Time I See Your Face, Lighthouse, River Town,

Out to Dry, Bring the People Together, What are

we fighting for? And then there was two bonus

tracks, which one was a, both of them are UK

bonus tracks. Forever May Not Be Long Enough

Egyptian Dreams remix and Overcome live from

Philadelphia. I don't like remixes. Just don't

like like the deep enough remix off of five was

fine for being in the Fast and the Furious I

don't mind that I mean just just hearing a live

song in a movie. That's fine, but it's I don't

like listening to remixes I just don't get it,

but out of the 13 tracks that were actually on

the US version of the album Absolutely love them

all I actually remember you guys have Walmart

up there in Canada, right? Yes, and we don't

just sell hockey pucks there. I'm sure There's

also hockey sticks as well. Yes but When we went

to Walmart night and and and she got me this

album When I went when I came back here to Louisville

after that horrible weekend I was living with

a friend of mine who had a pool and I had one

of those multicolored, you know, you know those

old boom old CD boom boxes like come in a variety

of colors, black, white, yellow, purple, neon

pink. Yeah. Yeah. So, so you know what I'm talking

about, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I had, I had

a, a purple boom box of that, that type of little

mini boom box. I would just go swimming for hours

and I would have this CD on repeat and I would

listen to the whole thing. And half the time

as it would play through and, and, and cycle

through the songs that I usually ended up like

catching my ear. while I was swimming was Life

Marches On and Sweet Release. Absolutely love

those songs. As I said, I love the entire album.

I mean, there isn't a song off here that I don't

like and there isn't a song off here that I can't

listen to. As far as Runaway goes, as much as

you have a crush on Shelby Lynn, I prefer the

non -Shelby Lynn version. I like this album version

better. I don't know, I just... I don't mind

when bands do a crossover like that and re -release

a single, that's fine, but I just didn't like

what she added to the song. I can see that. After

Birds of Prey, we enter the downward spiral.

because in 2006, they released songs from Black

Mountain. And here's a little bit of background

for you. Live signed with Epic Records in 2005,

having left Radioactive after the release of

their 2003 album, Birds of Prey. Singer Ed Kowalczyk

explained that the songs from Black Mountain

is in the same vein as Birds of Prey. The album

itself kind of took its lead from where we were

with Birds of Prey, which is just really basic

Snipped approach or stripped approach It is just

amazing. It is just a great album and the excitement

level of epic and the band Everybody is just

really pretty blown away by it Ed Kowalczyk,

whatever you've been smoking the last five years

of your career with live It has really taken

a toll on you because none of these songs off

this album I like at all Really? None of them

the river It's such a departure from how great

birds of prey and and five were such a I mean

like such a departure I Don't know I I don't

know if it was in fighting with the band or what

it was I mean, you know as you said we'll get

to that a little bit later, but I don't like

any of these songs. I have no connection any

of them No, I mean I Know the river like I know

this song and I really do like the song I can't

watch the music video At all because it's basically

the band it starts with them, you know, they're

out in the middle of this dusty desert or Salt

flats or something. I don't know. Mm -hmm. I

really did dig the song like it had that live

sound it had their That you know, they're I wouldn't

want to say traditional, but it has that signature

live sound. But aside from what I heard in the

clips that you sent, there, yeah, I have to agree

with you. Aside from the river, there isn't a

lot, you know, for like what you said from what

Kowalczyk said about songs from Black Mountain

is the same as Birds of Prey is like, ah, hell

nah. No, not at all. I mean I I have to I have

to very I Forget the word I have to disagree

with you sir. Yeah, there is like it is a live

album. It has that sound but From what like I

said again I love YouTube because all you need

is a track listing YouTube to listen to an album

nowadays if you don't want to buy it and For

most of what I heard It's blah like it's live

and it just sounds like so much product like

it's Any one of these songs could have been on

an earlier album for all I care You know, it's

just it just played it. That's what it sounds

like. It's just Dude, it's like I Don't get it

Yeah, so That's the albums. That's their you

know, they're they're mainstream albums that

have been released there was I will say that

that there is the the live albums in well the

compo actually no we do have to talk about a

couple things before we kind of take a break

let's talk about awake the best of live We have

to talk about Radiance Sea and Live at the Paradiso.

I think that's how you say it, Live at the Paradiso.

I don't know. Amsterdam. Freaking Amsterdam.

So yeah, let's start with... Let's start with...

Where is a wig? There's a wig. Yeah, let's let's

start with let's start with awake awake essentially

is their greatest hits album But it's it's all

live tracks. I believe or no, that's that's live

at the parody seal. Yeah It's a great great hits

of Yeah, yeah Awake the Best of Live is their

greatest hits album and includes Operation Spirit,

The Tyranny of Tradition, Pain Lies on the Riverside,

which is a new edit, Beauty of Grey, Selling

the Drama, I Alone, a new edit, Lightning Crashes,

All Over You, Pillar of Davidson, which is a

new edit, We Deal in Dreams, La Kenny's Juice,

Turn My Head, Dolphins Cry, Run to the Water,

Dance with You, Overcome, Nobody Knows, Heaven,

Runaway with Shelby Lynn, and something that

It's probably the only track I would have bought

off this, which I actually did. I Walk the Line,

which is a Johnny Cash cover. Oh, I don't know

about that one. I'm not saying they can do it,

but there's just certain bands that shouldn't

touch The Man in Black. Well, The Man in Black

touched Nine Inch Nails and he kind of scored

big with Hurt. Yeah, but that's The Man in Black.

right at at as well I mean it's pretty much the

other close thing we got to the good Lord it

or had let Johnny Cash was good that's what I'm

saying the guy was right he was the he was the

boss he was the big cheese he was the president

you know and I will say about lives version is

it's that they they ed and and the rest of and

try their best to not really mimic Johnny Cash

but Have the same inflections as he had as far

as the sound of of the song as far as Koalchik's

vocals I mean obviously Ed Koalchik's voice is

nothing like Johnny Cash's but It's that same

slow singing Vocal, you know what I mean? Yeah

So I think they did a halfway decent job with

it You your mind's gonna be blown when I tell

you this At one point, Live did a cover of Lennon.

They did Imagine. What? Yep. They did a John

Lennon song, Imagine. It got a lot of press when

it was a number of years ago. Yeah. But yeah,

I don't think it's on any of the albums now.

Now radiancy is something very very interesting

because it essentially is a compilation of bootleg

rarities and and two new songs Well, that's the

I mean something like this I'd be interested

in picking up if I could find it because Like

I said, I love the bands, obviously, if it's

unreleased material. Well, no, no, no, no. It's

not unreleased material. The only place it was

available was at the live shows, was at their

concerts, and it's available on the website.

on the band's website store, which I'm looking

for the link now. But yeah, no, the only reason

why I like Radiancy is for the two new tracks,

because at this time, it was released September

14th, 2007, which was a year after Songs from

Black Mountain. And I didn't really care for

Songs from Black Mountain. at all so when i found

this this this rarities thing um and i saw these

new two new tracks beautiful invisible and radiancy

i was like i must have these and they reinvigorated

my my love for the band because after the horrible

taste in my mouth for for songs from black mountain

those two songs was like yes this is a live i

know this is the live i know and love and it

was just amazing now when you get to uh... uh...

the songs from paradesio or the songs from amsterdam

album this is essentially live being live these

are all live live tracks uh... recorded from

from the uh... from uh... performance yeah from

from the performance uh... i think forever and

purifier are the only two tracks that are actual

i think it's studio recording uh... i'm trying

to see if there's a a marking on here usually

they have annotations uh... because they have

two stars by star indicates yet uh... forever

tracks fifteen and sixteen forever and purifier

or studio recordings so essentially beautiful

invisible radian sea forever and purifier were

four tracks of an eventual uh... you know eventual

possibly new album yet but they but they release

them as you know the radian sea rarities thing

where you only can get on the website and then

this live from Paradiso, which is in iTunes,

and I have these two, these are the only two

tracks I bought off the live. I don't like, I

don't mind seeing bands in concert, but I don't

like listening to live recordings. any band I

don't like listening to them like on iTunes like

I prefer the studio tracks but if I'm going to

see the band in concert that's great that's fine

because it's it's essentially a show you know

we've talked about this before in the music spotlight

concerts are a way for a band to make a song

evolve and not just be the studio recorded version

of it and you know have you know fan interaction

or whatever else But when I'm at home, and I've

got my headphones on, or I'm blasting music through

my speakers, I like listening to the studio recorded

stuff. Yeah. And that's why I just don't buy

concert albums. I mean, if I was to buy this,

I would buy it simply for the DVD to see the

videos and the footage and all that stuff. But

yeah, no. No. Don't. Good. Well, I mean at the

same time like I Probably check out the probably

got some videos on YouTube I'll check out see

what I think about the performance But by and

large I it depends on how much I love the band

goes a long way towards me Listening or watching

to a live album, right? I mean I'm a huge like

back I mean growing up back in the day like much

music which was the MTV of Canada Yeah, you know

back when either channel still did you know videos

and not jersey shore marathons uh like mtv had

mtv unplugged and much music had intimate and

interactive which were ostensibly uh what do

you call it acoustic shows they would have guys

like you know they had nirvana eric clapped and

brian adams you know guys would come in the studio

and like take questions from the crowd or phone

calls like i actually I'm one of those that got

to talk to Brian Adams, which was awesome. And

depending on how much I love the band goes a

long way towards me watching something like that.

And like I said, live, maybe I'll check it out

on YouTube. But by and large, I'd have to agree

with you that maybe it's not the greatest band

to be doing something like this. Like I love

the band, but I mean, I don't know if you want

to take a break before we start talking about

this, but. We will. We're going to take an album

break and then we're going to come back and talk

about the next topic. to be talking about the

mainstream success and breakup of the band oh

boy well obviously the mainstream success happened

with uh you know throwing copper and all that

uh they hit it big huh oh sorry you go mike well

they hit it big back in uh in 94 i mean it was

just gangbusters Early 94. Yeah, it's wouldn't

necessarily say they peeked there. I'd say probably

came later Like around. Oh, yeah. I mean yeah,

yeah, yeah Um, but no they had huge mainstream

success. I Think Secret Samadhi the tracks that

I mentioned off of that one Very underrated we

can use using rattlesnake kinda got uh... got

some play turn my head got played but turn my

head just uh... it's not just is is weird to

me turn turn your head turned you off essentially

yes uh... and then with the distance to hear

uh... uh... again gangbusters with dolphins crying

they stood up for love and all the tracks are

on that just Just amazing amazing stuff. I mean

they were they were at the top of their game

there. I Didn't know that I was just looking

on the wiki here in the Tour in 2000 when they

were touring with counting crows Adam Duritz

like the lead singer crows performed dolphins

cry with koalchik Well koalchik's would perform

with turrets on hanging around which That's actually

pretty cool. I wish those were actually released

somewhere. Well, you'd have to buy a live performance,

Mike. Yes, I know. Mike's like, no, not the live

album. Damn it. It's your musical crypt tonight

is what you're saying. Essentially, yes. All

right. Yeah, honestly, like, it's kind of like

when. Movie stars fall out of vogue or you don't

go crazy or something live That that late that

late 90s early aughts. That's that's the period

alive that I still love, you know distance to

hear five and the stuff since Birds of Prey and

songs from the Black Mountain all that Still

I mean great stuff like I loved you know, well

I love Birds of Prey, but yeah, like I said after

the river there wasn't a lot on Black Mountain

that I was digging on No, and then you know,

you're talking about we're talking about the

live at the Paradiso before that last break and

Well, I mean let's let's just say it Ed Kowalczyk's

an asshole Yes, we will get into that in a few

moments. Oh, yeah, but from yeah from as far

as mainstream success I think they're maybe after

their first, like their early history, after

mental jewelry, you could arguably be kind of

an indie thing. You know? Yeah, I mean, it was

their debut album, but there really wasn't, I

mean, besides, you know, like Pain Lies on the

Riverside and Beauty of Grey, the songs that

I listened to on that, they just, they didn't

catch me, as I've said. Yeah. But, I mean, throwing

copper in 94, Just essentially launched them.

Yeah, it booted the door off the hinges. Oh,

yeah Yeah, I mean I alone lightning I mean lightning

crashes is used in so many things I mean it's

used in you know as I said before the the rookie

trailer. It's used in so many different things

What's really funny about lightning crashes it

is? At one point I believe it's in the liner

the loss of one of their friends Barbara. Oh

god, I forget where her last name is But the

funniest thing about that was in 99 when I was

listening to distance to hear I Started getting

sucked into the chicken soup for the soul books.

I Don't even know you anymore shut up They're

they're halfway decent books, especially, you

know Essentially think think of them as you know

PC for dummies type of things, but they're you

know, slightly more educational and more enlightening

But No, I got I got sucked into those and there

was a story by this but I again I don't remember

her last name at the off the top of my head,

but there was a story in there from her that

had these three characters, one was named Ed.

And I'm thinking, okay, is this about the band

name? I mean, are these three guys based off

of some of the band members from Live? Because

it was the exact same person, because it even

annotates in the book that the band named the

song after this lady. And I'm gonna need to go

back and find which book it was in and wherever

else. but um... but no there's that you know

that got them gangbusters you know famous of

course you know distance to hear with dolphins

crying they stood up for love and then as you

said you know uh... five and and birds of uh...

five and birds of prey specifically i i i don't

count songs from black mountain it it just doesn't

doesn't exist in my opinion uh... But Five and

Birds of Prey and then the two new tracks off

of Radiance Sea and the two new tracks off of

Live from Paradisio, those are all awesome. You

know, the sad thing is, and this is kind of where

we're gonna get into the band break up here,

is Ed Kowalczyk's departure. Now I am going to

read this from Wiki because it is cited and everything

else. All that good stuff. After a concert at

the Palacio in Las Vegas in June 2009, Live announced

that the band would take a two -year hiatus,

quote unquote hiatus, to work on other projects.

Kowalczyk recorded his solo album, Alive, and

the other band members formed a group with Kevin

Martin and Sean Hennessy of Candlebox called

The Gracious Few. That band proceeded to record

a self -titled debut album in California for

release in September of 2010. On November 30th

2009, Taylor revealed that the hiatus was more

likely a permanent split. He alleged that the

reasons for the breakup included Kowalczyk's

demand of $100 ,000 lead singer bonus at the

2009 Pink Pop Festival and a 2005 contract contract

making Kowalczyk the sole signatory of Live's

black coffee publishing company without the knowledge

of the rest of the band. These sentiments were

conveyed in an email to fans from the band minus

Kowalczyk via the mailing list at friendsoflive

.com which is now freaksforlive .com and on Chad

Taylor's official blog. Taylor did however leave

open the possibility of Live reforming with a

new vocalist. At the end of May 2010, the other

three members of Live filed a lawsuit against

Kowalczyk and their former business manager in

the New York State Supreme Court. Kowalczyk was

asked about the lawsuit in September of 2010

interview but declined to elaborate saying there

is a court case that is pending which is why

I really don't want to get into it. In June 2011,

Kowalczyk told the Salt Lake Tribune I had simply

come to the end of a chapter in my life and wanted

to spread my wings and move beyond what I had

been doing in the same way for almost 20 years.

As far as the allegations were leveled at me

and purported as the reason for the breakup,

they were all absolutely untrue. I have no plans

to work with those individuals again. The spirit

of live is alive and well in my performances

and my new material. Okay, yeah, I still love

the band. I still love their music, but Ed Kowalczyk

is a dick. That's like I said before, a hole.

Yeah, but and just to step back to like the live

at the Paradisio, I mean, before this hiatus,

you know, the finger quotes you can't see because

they're talking like Chad Taylor on the wiki,

they're saying we're Basically Kowalczyk would

come and bitch to him about his guitar playing

every night during the recording of this and

He he talks about how he had bugged the Texas

like please find something. I can't take it anymore

Because it literally says like the quote from

Taylor on the wiki is it was sucking the life

out of me on stage and it's like And I'm just

gonna say it straight out like as much as I enjoy

Kowalczyk singing in the band He has a face I

want to punch. He has a face that I want to beat

severely with a bag of oranges And I don't you

know, it's like it's not that I actively dislike

the guy I mean, I like his work, but this guy's

a dick. Yeah, he is a massive cock. I mean Okay,

never mind the whole yeah, I'll be the only guy

in charge of the publishing company Yeah, the

other guys don't care, you know that down I can

almost guarantee you that is the entire conversation

of like when he's with the lawyers signing that

contract Oh, yeah, he's probably hey guys. Here's

a coupon for free. Don't it's go have fun. Oh

Yeah, you know something like that. Like I don't

know how he actually got them not to be there

but yeah, it's just I like his music but personally

especially at the end there is like I have no

plans like you just spent like a full say a third

of your life or whatever 20 years playing with

these guys like you know probably getting closer

than family yeah and just to like throw it all

away yeah well I wouldn't know if it again throwing

it all away Again, it's between Kowalczyk and

the rest of the band. It's just, that was a really

shitty thing to do. And to say the spirit of

live is alive and well in my performances, you're

not the band, asshole. Well, right, but I mean,

I think what he was meaning there is, as far

as future, as far as the band as we knew it back

then before all of this happened i think is what

he was meaning was the spirit of the band as

it was is there in his performances but he's

no longer going to be performing with them and

up until now i had no idea about the next information

i'm going to read off the wiki um because at

this point i you know outside of at the time,

Forever and Purifier, those two studio tracks

from Live at the Paradiso. That was the last

I knew of them recording together. As far as

I knew, Live was no longer there. Dahlheimer,

Taylor, and Gracie were all moving on to other

stuff. Kowalczyk has his... other stuff. So this

next bit kind of shocked me when I learned about

it. Live's return... with Chris Shin as lead

singer. On June 8th, 2011, Chad Taylor revealed

that he, Dahlheimer, and Gracie will be restarting

the band and recording new songs without Kowalczyk.

He made no mention of any potential new lead

singer, but said that we'll have to begin addressing

the whole left -buyer singer's departure. He

added that I need to feel live once again without

the constraints that were placed on it over the

last few years. Chad, Patrick and I invested

most of our lives to writing, recording and performing

the songs of live. We deserve a chance to reconnect

with fans to say goodbye to the older and hello

to the new. On January 24th, 2012, Taylor Dahlheimer

and Gracie announced that they were leading members

in a project to renovate uh... a four -story

building at two hundred ten york street in york

uh... three floors will house a technology company

creating sixty new jobs the building will also

include a brand new recording studio uh... and

the band returned from their nearly three -year

hiatus on march twelve twenty twelve with chris

shin formerly of unified the un -unified theory

or unified theory i don't know whatever uh...

as their new lead singer the new lineup performed

before invited audience at the Strand Capital

Performing Arts Center in York. The band performed

a six -piece with The Gracious Fuse, Sean Hennessey

on guitar and Alexander LaFear on keyboards.

So apparently they have a new lead singer and

they'll be, it doesn't mention a new album but

I'm sure that they'll be putting out a new album.

Before you give your thoughts on this, the only

thing I have to say is the same thing as I've

said over and over again in the music spotlight.

For me, a band can change everything if they

want to accept the lead singer. Imagine if, and

I know this would never happen, but imagine if

Chad Kroger and Brad Arnold switched places.

So Brad Arnold would be the lead singer of Nickelback,

and Chad Kroger would be the lead singer of 3

Doors Down. Both of those fanbases would absolutely

hate it. Oh, it would end in fire and blood.

Right, but my point here is that for me, I'm

more than willing to keep an open mind having

Chris Shin as the new lead singer, but again,

are they going to, obviously with new material,

new studio material, that's fine because it's

a new chapter. The problem I'm going to have

is when they go out on concert tours. Is he going

to be singing Ed Kowalczyk's songs? The classic

songs that we all know and love? That's where

my problem comes in with a new lead singer on

anything. Yeah, I mean... Chad better not leave

nickel back. No, he's not I was just using it

as an example of No, I Don't think it's outside

the realm of possibility that they're gonna be

playing, you know some of the old standards Whether

or not they have they resonate as well as Kowalczyk's

singing is another thing. So you'll have to see,

if you ever get a chance, I'd love to see the

new line up in concert or hear some of their

new stuff. And yeah, I mean, right off, I just

like, is the dolphin's cry gonna sound the same

and not necessarily, I mean, obviously it's gonna

sound different because there's a new guy singing.

is it is it is still is it still gonna have that

you that residents that hawk is it still gonna

have that passion that uh... culture was put

into it yeah i doubt it was so it's it's it's

it's right now it's kinda like that meh it's

on the fence you'll see what happens in the future

although i mean it's a change is good obviously

i mean well change change is good but again it

it goes back to And like I said, I'm open to

a new live album with Chris Shin as the lead

singer, because I want to see what they do with

new songs and stuff like that. But my problem

is, as I said more so, is with the classics.

How are those going to be treated? Because that's

where my skepticism lies, I guess. I have all

of the old songs that I... I know and love and

it's Kowalczyk singing them and that's all well

and good, but I don't know. I wish the band nothing

but the best, but I'm just not sure if, you know,

if they're going to, you know, be able to change

and evolve. I mean, essentially, this is a whole

new evolution for the band without Kowalczyk.

I just don't know if they're going to be able

to change and evolve and still remain true to

the fans that they had, you know, from 94 to

2003. Yeah. Well, I mean, it's... Like I said,

change is good, and, you know, everybody, like...

I think of all the things in the entertainment

industry, bands and, like, musically, you know,

bands and singers, like... they're the only ones

that really deserve to use the word evolve and

i mean with with koalchik lagoon you know the

band had if they wanted to survive they had to

evolve they had to adapt right to their new situation

and you know we'll see what happens like because

i was looking up on chris shin here apparently

he was down to uh replace uh travis warren who

is the lead vocalist of blind melon If this was

back in 08, he was supposed to He was supposed

to replace Travis Warren is lead vocalist on

that tour and he Ended up not being you they

ended up canceling that tour just because Shin

didn't have enough time to prepare But there

at least this is on the wiki. It's It's unknown

whether Shin is a contender for the permanent

position is lead singer for Blind Millen at present

so I mean the fact that this isn't the first

time that he's been brought in in this capacity

to take like uh I never really listened to blind

melon so I wouldn't know you know how different

he is from this Travis Warren dude but you know

if if blind melon thought enough of him to bring

him in like that gives me a little bit of hope

for the future alive yeah um you know, and I'm

gonna repeat it again as I've said just a few

minutes ago and earlier, I'm open -minded about

new live albums with him as the lead singer.

I'm completely close -minded to him as the lead

singer at concert shows because of the classics,

you know, I just don't know how that's gonna

sound because it's not... Ed Kowalczyk doing

it. I'm glad that they found a new lead singer.

I'm glad that they're going to be still releasing

new material and everything else. That's all

well and good. But I currently, until I hear

new stuff from them, still prefer my Kowalczyk

stuff. So what are some of your favorite songs

by the band? Well, obviously, like I said earlier,

lightning crashes. And, well, basically the entirety

of the distance to here. Right. I love that.

Specifically, dolphins cry, run to the water,

and melt down. Once you go on from there, like

I said, five, basically the first half of five

I absolutely love. Yeah. Not including Forever

May Not Be Long, because like I said, that song

just... That song, if I were to put it into a

physical context, that's like somebody just poking

you with the blunt end of a spoon. Just, you

know, huh? How do you like that? Huh? Huh? I

don't know why. That song just, that's the reaction

I get from that song. I also loved Overcome on

that album. You know, Birds of Prey. Like I said

runaway of the show. I like the Shelby Lynn variant.

I mean, mm -hmm. That's cool Pretty I mean, I

I don't have any other real favorites on that

album. I mean again, I love I love the album.

It's just aside from runaway and heaven Nothing

really stands out to me on that one. And I don't

know if that's Maybe it's just comes through

in their lyrics and that one. That's when the

band started to have problems Yeah, you know

And then you go on to songs from Black Mountain.

Like I said, pretty much the only song I like

out of there is The River. I mean, it's a radio

song. It's got all of the major, you know, live,

all lives there in full effect on that song.

It's just such a radio song. It's not product

like a lot of other songs are, but it just, you

guys could do so much better. And that's what

I come away with on that song. it could be so

much better. And then from there on, I mean,

if I had ever went to the show or I get like

PayPal or something, I'd probably pick up Radiance

Sea just because, you know, with bootleg rarities,

and I'm not saying that as part of the title,

like actual bootleg rarities, like I've heard

from other bands and there is a lot of cool stuff

out there like stuff that, you know, it's like

the stuff from the cutting room floor. Is never

necessarily a bad thing So yeah, yeah, yeah,

yeah, that's that's that's true You know for

me I Like, you know, I alone selling the drama

all over you lightning crashes from from throwing

copper from Secret Samadhi. I like ghosts century

Insomnia and the whole universe rattlesnake lacanese

juice um and even meant you know going back to

before throwing copper you know mental jewelry

pain lies on the riverside and uh and beauty

of gray those are great songs um distance to

here i like a majority of them uh i don't like

them all but you know stuff like they stood up

for love dolphins cry uh... the distance the

the title track there uh... son blue lady stuff

like that i love all that stuff uh... when it

comes to a five and birds of prey i like the

entire i mean every song on that album affects

me in some way or another on both of those albums

uh... there isn't a single song outside of the

deep enough remix on on the five album there

isn't a song on either one of those that i don't

like and songs from black mountain essentially

for me outside of radiancy and and the two tracks

from live from paradiso um essentially birds

of prey was the swan song album for me because

i i don't even recognize songs from black mountain

i i don't even it doesn't exist it it just doesn't

fucking exist at all I don't know how, I don't

know what Ed Kowalczyk or how much Ed Kowalczyk

was smoking in 2006, but that album just... So

basically you have the reaction to that entire

album that I had to forever may not be long enough.

Yeah, essentially, yes. Does it make you want

to punch a puppy, Mike? No, it just disgusts

me because it's not like... You know, with what

Kowalczyk said about, oh, this is a continuation

of from where we were three years ago on Birds

of Prey. I listen to The River, I listen to Mystery,

and I listen to Wings. And I listen to a couple

of the other tracks. Those are the three that

I remember off the top of my head. Those three

tracks sound nothing like everything on Birds

of Prey. Sounds nothing alike to anything on

Birds of Prey. Birds of Prey... compared to songs

from Black Mountain, Birds of Prey is the superior

product in my opinion. So yeah, I think before

I blow a blood vessel talking about songs from

Black Mountain. I can hear it from here, Mike.

Yeah, I know. I think we're going to take a commercial

the artist spotlight on live. I think for me,

as far as a final thought, as I said before,

and I know I've repeated myself several times

in this episode, but I can't hit the point enough.

I'm open -minded about new music with Chris Shin

as lead singer, but I'm extremely skeptical about

seeing them in a concert where he... potentially

is singing I Alone or Lightning Crashes because

Kowalczyk's voice is so distinctive. It's so

rec... I mean, you know, it's the same thing

as I made that horrible analogy earlier about

if Chad Kroger and Brad Arnold switched bands,

you know, it would just ruin both of those bands.

Well, if there was a permanent switch, obviously,

but yeah. Well right, yeah, well that's kind

of the point, seeing as how this is now a permanent

new direction for them, for live, so... I don't

know, I love the old stuff from Ed Kowalczyk,

it's stuff that I can listen to all the time,

out of the songs that I like. And I guess I'm

just optimistic to see what they do next. I don't

know, what about you for final thoughts? I'm

always gonna love the music, I mean, it's not...

Right. It's not like like I said personal distaste

for Cool chick aside. Oh, no, you know, I love

the music so I'm always gonna be interested in

I'm always gonna love listening to you what I

have and the old stuff certainly and like I said

once we get some stuff from Mr. Shin and the

band, you know go on up until then I'm gonna

reserve judgment because I'm just saying I'm

not serving like my judge until actually here.

Yeah, you live. Oh, yeah Sounds wrong the new

live the new wrong I'm gonna wait until I hear

some before actually, you know Okay, they're

a bit of all right, you know see what happens

and like I said Just I love their music. That's

really all I can say and To those that might

Question why why do you want to hurt it cool

chick? It's like take a good long look at that

man and tell me you don't feel the same thing

Yeah You know as I said You know I am I am essentially

reserving judgment as well for the new stuff.

I'm just cautiously pessimist pessimistic about

him as as as the lead singer in concerts That's

where I'm kind of pessimistic about it As far

as the future goes, but as far as the future

for studio albums sure You know for new for new

material. I'll be very open -minded to see what

they sound like so I Think that's gonna do it.
