About this Episode

TFJ1Mike and JT from Saskatoon dive into Lifehouse's catalog from their 2000 debut No Name Face through 2010's Smoke & Mirrors. They discuss the band's evolution across albums, standout tracks like "Hanging by a Moment" and "Halfway Gone," and Lifehouse's prolific placement in TV soundtracks including Smallville, Shrek, and Wicker Park.

Hello, Mitch! This is Jesse from Rock Sugar,

and you're listening to the GeekCast Radio Network.

Keep it right here. Hello and welcome to GeekCaster

Radio. This is the artist spotlight for the 2000s.

This will continue the epic music spotlight we

have planned here at GCR. I am one of your hosts,

TFJ1Mike, and joining me is JT from Saskatoon.

Hello. Yo. Today we're going to be talking about

Lifehouse. Oh, really? Yeah. No, it's not all

kidding aside. I already know I told you three

weeks in advance. Oh Yes, of course Like you

don't remember shit Yeah, I believe the back

bacon The bat bacon I don't that bacon man Canadian

back bacon, you know, it's Anyway, let's get

on with the show. That's some screeching bacon

right there if it was bat bacon Alright, so yes

life house they They hit in 2000 with their debut

album no name face Very very awesome band, you

know when I heard hanging from hanging by a moment.

I was like, yes Yeah, exactly So How did you

find them? I mean, how did you start listening

to life house when they first came out? Basically

they were This is like just at the tail end of

like, you know much music is the MTV of Canada

and this is like at the tail end of where they

Started to show a lot more shows and a lot less

videos. So I discovered them basically on the

much music weekly countdown You know, they would

have like an hour and an hour and a half and

they would count down like the top 30 videos

that week Which is basically top 30 singles,

you know, whatever and I that's where I discovered

them as they showed up and they placed pretty

highly Initially with that, you know hanging

by a moment which and I really like the song

because I mean The band you got Jason Wade's

lead singer I can't pronounce his last name.

We'll just call him Rick Wools. Rick Wools on

drums and then Ben Carey on lead guitar. No,

I love that initial single because mainly it

was a really catchy radio song which in and of

itself isn't that deserving of praise, like not

knocking them, it just doesn't like, hey, they're

a poppy song, poppy song band. What really dug

into me was Jason Wade's vocals. He has got this

natural kind of melodic haunting sound to his

voice, like almost echoey, but it's just something

that hooked me. And yeah, I mean, hanging by

a moment was definitely The song that I love

the most off that album. I also love six cycle

carousel, which is the next single I think the

only one after that that I really really love

was somewhere in between And that was only because

it was in Smallville Yeah, I love somewhere in

between based on its you know its own merits

and This is another song like we spoke of on

the default spotlight this is the one that you

know I went and I bought it and I still have

it so as soon as I heard hanging by a moment

on radio I was living in Massachusetts at the

time as soon as I heard that I was like I need

to hear this entire album I went to a strawberries

music store yes strawberries music store It's

essentially the Massachusetts version of a Sam

Goody where everything is overpriced But at the

time no name face the debut album was I don't

know like 13 99 14 now, you know not not so like,

you know not so bad of an overpriced because

you know, usually the the same goodie prices

are like 16 17 18 19 on none for one disc CD

and that's just kind of outrageous but i was

like i have to hear this album i brought no name

face home i just hit play i hit repeat and the

entire album i can listen to um it's an album

and i know this is gonna sound weird it's an

album i love falling asleep to it has that well

it like like life house at least in this album

they don't have a lot of the songs don't aren't

like Hard rock and song they're kind of like

a It's more of a pop rock slash soft rock type

of deal You know there are a lot of love songs.

There are a lot of songs that tell stories But

it's more slow rock than it is hard rock and

I and that's why I say that I can fall asleep

to the album right fall asleep listening to the

album and It was just such a great great. You

know 12 track thing other songs. I liked off

of it was Unknown, which is the third track off

of it. Klingon Clatter, which I think is probably

the one. Klingon Clatter and Quasimodo are the

two songs that are probably more so more rock

than slow. And like you said, somewhere in between

and obviously everything. Absolutely, absolutely

love the entire album for No Name Face. It was

just great, great music. And then in 2000 see

when did it get released? I think it was 2002.

We'll have to look now. Stanley Climb Fall. When

the hell did that come out? Damn it. Yeah, 2002

was Stanley Climb Fall, which the singles were

Spin and Take Me Away. Honestly, I've listened

to samples on iTunes of this, but Spin and Take

Me Away are the only two songs off this album

that I actually own. I may have to go back and

listen to the rest of the album, but I haven't

really heard it. I've heard, like I said, the

samples, and I didn't really feel what they were

doing with this album at all. You weren't feeling

it? No. No, again office Stanley Kline fall that

take me away is the only song I really Know off

of that one. Yeah, and It's not for not loving

the Not not for not liking the song like take

me away which was featured in Smallville But

and Boston Public oddly enough when I'm looking

at the info here in the wiki. Yeah, yeah, like

I love that song, but you know you Look at anything

else off of Stanley kind of falling. I'm just

Well, I'm just gonna say it's stupidest record

title, you know Yeah, yeah, the record title

was kind of weird to me. I was like, what does

that have to like like no -name -face I can see

the the illusion to them just starting out They're

building their name, you know, they don't have

an identity yet, right? Right. Exactly. They

don't have an identity yet and you know, but

I will say spin is It doesn't take the place

Nothing can take the place of hanging by a moment,

but it builds on That, you know radio ready single

Successful song same thing would take me away,

but spin is more of a rocker type of song Yeah,

see a spin is is is very well done as well, and

then they released The self -titled album, and

I was like what is this? Yeah, then You know

right off. I love the self -titled album because

that was the second one I ever purchased off

of theirs Right. Because I was like, back in

the day, we used to have this music store. We

still have a few of them in Saskatchewan, but

they don't have them in Saskatoon. It's called

CD Plus, which was just basically video games

and movies and music. And then they got like

a library section, which is kind of weird. Well,

it's just you get like these two racks are just

full of books and there's like porn star bios

and Hardcover comic book collections. I was like

Tara Patrick put a book out. I might have to

read that I Think she's attractive anyway, I

went in then they have Sorry porn stars are people

too. We know yeah according to Dodd But no, I

went in they had like, you know, like it's Sam

Goody or strawberries You probably had like a

listing station where you had a machine with

like four or five CDs loaded into it you could

hit a number and listen through to your heart's

content and I Went in there and I listened to

a few tracks off of the self -titled album and

I really loved it. I was like that's probably

one of the few times that I've ever listened

at a station I turned around like I'm buying

this now Yeah Which is what I did, but no, I

mean basically I love it from front to back,

you know come back down After you and me and

blind which were the two the first two singles

off of it Come back down and better luck next

time or probably my favorite songs off of that

Just I thought it was kind of a return to in

a few ways It was returned to the the energy

they had on no name face Hmm, you know, it's

kind of like the second wind they're coming back

swinging. So I really dug this album This is

one that I'm gonna have to go back and listen

and I don't know if I want to buy the whole album

because I did buy you and me and I because I

heard it again, you know, this is kind of getting

into our next topic, but These guys have essentially

been a made -for -tv band and when I say that

is almost all of their songs Not all of them,

but a good majority of each, you know, each single

shows up in an episode of Smallville at some

point. And other stuff as well, and I'll go through

what songs have shown up where, but when I first

heard this, I was like, you know, when I first

heard You and Me, I was like, oh, that's, okay,

that's the Lifehouse I know. I started listening

to other preview tracks on the self -titled album,

like, yeah, this isn't... When I first listened

to it, it just didn't hit me that well. Yeah,

but oh, you know, I'm more than willing to go

back in and you know, check it out again But

so yeah, that was the 2005 was the self -titled

album and then 2007. Oh my god They released

who we are and Wow This is an album of albums

I would say the first seven tracks For me are

the best out of the 12 tracks Disarray first

time whatever it takes who we are broken the

joke and easier to be Absolutely loved them all

You get to the track eight and then it just kind

of yeah Sliding scale again. Yeah, but no, I

mean like like seven out of twelve tracks That's

not bad to have seven hits out of twelve tracks

on an album Yeah, no, I definitely agree with

you on that the first half You know is definitely

I think this the stronger bits. Yeah of this

one I did kind of I was kind of digging on mesmerized

a little bit. I It was okay, you know, it was

a lighthouse song it could be recognized as such

Right, but definitely that first one especially

whatever it takes. I think that's the strongest

song on the album Yeah Yeah, but Again, this

is one like I I came across this Like this is

the only this is the last album I ever got of

life house because I know there's coming up smoke

and mirrors this one I found at a garage sale

of it was basically in like a Six for six packs,

you know six CDs six bucks. Yeah, and Yeah, I

put popped it in the car on the way home listen

to us. It's it's alright. It's a bit of all right

So I liked it it's It's a bit of all right The

book of secrets damn it Nicolas Cage I'm taking

that from something else, not Nicolas Cage. Well,

we can talk about him later. Especially his comedic

performance in Ghost Rider 2. As the albums have

gone so far, number one favorite would be No

Name Face, number two would be The Self -Titled,

and then I would put Who We Are. Yes, I have

gone and listened to the many of the tracks from

Stanley Klein following like iTunes and YouTube

It's it's on the lower. It's in the lower bit

They're just because there wasn't as much on

that one and I just can't get over the name.

I'm sorry. Yeah. Yeah, it just What are you gonna

do? Yeah Who we are like I said the first seven

tracks I've tried listening to tracks eight through

twelve and it just because I own I Own the entire

album. It just doesn't tracks eight to twelve

just don't really do anything for me Not that

that's a slight against the band Like I said

seven out of twelve that ain't bad for me to

get you know to love seven trees I love every

single one of those tracks And again, Disarray,

it's so weird that Wikipedia doesn't even credit

Disarray as being the first single, even though

it was. Disarray was the very first thing I had

heard of from who we are on radio at the time,

because in 2007 I was still listening to radio,

sadly not now. and you know who we are like i

said that those first seven tracks it got me

pumped it was like yes i love i still love this

band this band is awesome you know sure they've

had a couple of missteps here and there especially

with that stupid album title which makes no damn

sense um but moving on to the 2010 album of smoke

and mirrors did you get to listen to any of these

songs at all I listened to a few of them like

the previews on iTunes. I mean the one song I

actually bought it off of Like the one track

I bought off iTunes because I heard it on The

radio here in Saskatoon was halfway gone, which

I love that song that has got like a really great

Energy feel to it. Yeah, so Other than that I

liked All In. All In was pretty good. The only

other one I could really speak of was Falling

In. Falling In just... Again, that's a bit of

all right. I just love the way the song plays

from beginning to end, so... Gonna have to let

you take the majority on this one because I don't

know a whole lot about it. For me on this one...

I got the extended edition. I got the deluxe

edition, and according to Wikipedia there's 19

tracks. I thought there was only 17. But no,

the first 12, I love all -in. Again, the first

five tracks from All In, Nerve Damage, Had Enough,

which features Chris Daughtry, Halfway Gone,

It Is What It Is, and From Where You Are, which

From Where You Are I think is a track that they

did for... Jason Wade, yeah, that was the one,

they essentially put a single on this album that

wasn't even, that was done for an all -state

teen driving charity thing. So the first five

are great, I love them. The title track of the

album, Smoke and Mirrors, I love that. Falling

In, that's great. Wrecking Ball is a good song.

And as well as Here Tomorrow Gone Today. As far

as the Deluxe Edition version, the only two that

I really care for from it is All That I'm Asking

For and Don't Awake Me When It's Over. Those

are very much... you know, Lifehouse, you know.

The entire album, out of the songs that I do

like, they're all very radio -friendly, I think.

Some of the other ones that I don't really care

for probably aren't radio -friendly, and I guess

that just goes to the fact that I've become this

guy who listens to the bands that I love, that

I can find what I think should be the next single.

Of course, half the time it doesn't happen. but

ever since, you know, I'm not in the music industry.

But overall, I mean, Lifehouse has had a very

solid career. I mentioned earlier about the other

songs they've done that I want to bring up as

far as what's in what. In 2001, they had You

Belong to Me, which was in Shrek for music from

the Motion Picture soundtrack. Something was

in, they played it at Last Call with Carson Daly.

Everybody Is Someone in 2004 was in the Wicker

Park soundtrack. uh... somewhere only we know

it was alive on yahoo live track good enough

was in the wild soundtrack uh... if this is goodbye

i have no idea why they did this no clue it's

in the brats motion picture soundtrack okay now

this is where which soundtrack brats oh god Now

this is where I think Lifehouse jumped the shark

so to speak because Doing a song for a Bratz

movie. It's kind of weird. They made a live -action

movie. I I didn't even look at I just sent you

the link. I didn't even oh You know, it's it's

oh god. My eyes hurt apparently if this is goodbye

is a b -side from the who we are recording sessions

in 2007 they did a holiday single silent night

which I got it and I just can't listen to it

they did beast of burden which was on stripped

music sessions tribute to the godfathers of rock

the Rolling Stones the other ones oh the song

you belong to me in Shrek what in the Shrek soundtrack

was a Jason Wade solo song okay and then something

which was performed on last call with Carson

Daly is a tribute to George Harrison that's cool

yes very cool um overall life house is a band

that I can and still listen to today They are

in major rotation on my iTunes playlist. The

train keeps rolling on for them as far as I'm

concerned and according to Wikipedia they are

currently working on their sixth studio album

after Smoke and Mirrors so I can't wait to see

what's coming out from these guys. No it's definitely

a band that like they've got a lot of positive

Lot of positive energy about them and they are

really talented. I mean As because we spoke on

the default episode of the sliding scale. Yes,

I I wouldn't necessarily say that Life house

definitely isn't on a sliding scale. I think

they've gotten stronger With each successive

album like even Stanley Kleinfall had a lot of

good stuff about it Yeah, and who we are is probably

my favorite out of theirs it's uh i think yeah

they're gonna be around for a great long time

i can't wait to see what they do next so i agree

i um yeah that's basically what i think um for

me as i said before some of my favorite tracks

is i can pretty much listen to all of no name

face i do like spin and take me away from stanley

climb fall You and me is kind of weird because

on iTunes they released The regular version on

the self -titled album, but they also released

a wedding extended version Which I have I'll

have to go back and listen to see what the differences

are But I think it's like an additional like

a minute and a half worth the song. I don't know

I forget what the differences are between them

You know who we are, like I said, the first seven

tracks off of that and Smoke and Mirrors, a good

majority of that album I like. The song, It Is

What It Is, is something that, it's a relationship

song and it's kind of like, you know, it's kind

of like a, you know, losing your relationship

type of song where You have a breakup and you

can't change it. So it is what it is and you

just kind of walk away from it It's a good track.

It really is So I think we're gonna go to a commercial

break and then we'll come back after that to

close the show You can now hear the Geekcast

narrow it down a bit. Well, what about Star Wars?

Still, there's a ton of those out there. What

else you got? We could always do G .I. Joe comics.

There's still a ton of those out there. What

about the 80s franchises? There's already a few

of those as well. Well, let's forget about comics.

Let's focus on toys and action figures. Dude,

knowing us is half the battle. again you Final

thoughts on Lifehouse. For me, they are not on

a slippery slope. They are on a high incline.

I think that, you know, they've had a little

bit of faltering with that sophomore album, but

I'm more than willing to go back and give it

a chance and see if there are other tracks on

there that I really like. But overall, I praise

these guys. They've had, you know, I can look

at my, because I make best of lists of my favorite

songs from whatever artists on iTunes and Their

list I believe has close to 25 tracks maybe so

Overall, I really really love life house. What

about you for final thoughts on life house? Life

house is one of those initially like it's as

much as I loved hanging by a moment. I kind of

initially Wrote them off as they're not gonna

be here in a couple of years and I'm really I'm

glad to say I was proven wrong. Like I really

love these guys and I look forward to What's

coming next? It's just you know, I kind of I

can't always afford to buy music So, you know

YouTube and previews on iTunes are always appreciated

But no, I love the band. I love their sound I

hope they come out with like a straight -up Positive

their next album they come with a straight -up

positive energetic song like halfway gone. Yeah

because it's just there's something about the

beat and the progression of how the song moves

through the little bit of narrative that's there

it's just I love that song and I can't wait I

wish they would if they made an album of nothing

but songs like that that would be awesome but

overall I love the band and I love everything

they've done yes and it's very awesome like like

we've said we can't wait to see what they do

further Um, which I think it's, you know, it's

kind of a, you know, a big difference where you,

you know, you said you were, you know, proven

wrong about, you know, them fading away. Whereas,

you know, last week we talked about default who

has actually almost at this point faded away.

Um, but, you know, life house can come back after,

you know, like I said, smoke and mirrors was

released in 2010. They're now in the process

of doing their six to do album. So. It may get

released this year, it may get released next

year, so we just never know. We'll have to wait

and see. Thank you for joining us here on GeekCast
