About this Episode

Steve Phillips and TFG1 Mike sit down with Gary and Justin from What's on Joe Mind to discuss the upcoming 2012 G.I. Joe Convention in New Orleans. The conversation covers event dates and location, ticket packages and pricing, guest appearances including voice actors and comic artists, the private movie screening for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, customizing classes, casino night and auctions, costume and diorama contests, and fan film screenings. They also dive into the differences between G.I. Joe collector communities and compare the convention experience to Transformer conventions.

Hello and welcome to the GeekCast Radio Special

Spotlight on the Geocon Convention. I'm your

host, Steve Megatron Phillips, and joining me

in this endeavor is... TFG1 Mike. And we have,

coming from the What's On Joe Minecast... Mike,

can you sound any less interested? Fuck you,

Gary. Don't even go there. Hey, what? You want

me to go there? Okay. You have Gary commander

-in -chief cad so of what's on Joe mine and my

co -hosts I'm Mike you're as airy Sometimes they

call me beachhead Well, you know But Mike I was

I was thinking before we get started with these

two we need to give We you know, we got Steve

Megatron Phillips and TFG one Mike. I mean This

is no room for robots here. We need to give them

work. You're on GeekCast Radio Network, asshole.

There's plenty of room for robots. All I hear

about is one guy who's named himself after Gobots

and another one who used to be the GM of the

Mets. I'm just not concerned. I'm not concerned.

I'm thinking for Steve, we'll call him Grand

Slam. That makes me sense. Steve Phillips, GM

of the Mets, Grand Slam, there you go. FG1 Mike,

Skidmark. No, that would be Chuck's nickname.

No, that's Skid Row. That's Chuck Doff. You're

assuming that Chuck wears underpants. That's

why it's called Skid Row. He's more of a, more

wanders around in swaddling clothes. Oh god.

Are we good with that skidmark and grand slam

or? No. Just keep the regular damn names. Steve

I know likes it. Grand slam is a highly respectable

Joe. I don't even know who he is. That's why

it's highly respectable. He could be like Tunnel

Rat or something and I wouldn't know. No I know

who Tunnel Rat is so I think that's smart. In

any case, mostly why we wanted to do this is

to give not only our listeners, but your listeners

more exposure on the G .I. Joe convention for

2012. In starting that out, what are some key

elements going on with this event? Starting out,

where is it at and when is it? The 2012 GI Joe

Convention will be in New Orleans this June,

June 28th to July 1st, which happens to coincide

with the movie release. Good timing. Yeah, perfect

timing. Especially with such a very uplifting

and iconic version of the film coming out this

time around. Well, we all have optimism and a

lot of hopes pinned up on this. But actually,

the bulk of the film was filmed down in Louisiana,

so it kind of makes sense also that the con is

down there in the area where they filmed the

movie. Yes. And so how many of you guys are going

to represent What's on Joe Mine? I am confirmed.

Justin general Hawk Bell is confirmed and Mike

Mike is getting closer and closer by the moment

But we are we are making that last push to get

that That that couple of hundred bucks together

to put us over the top into the confirmed category

So you see yours is waiting at donations Yes,

it means we've been so close before he's actually

had it snatched out of his hand So we we get

to pray for his lack of shit touch Whenever he

touches a piece of electronics and breaks on

him It's one of those things where as soon as

I say I'm going to go, then my car will explode

or my place of employment will burn down or I'll

get rabies. I've actually had it happen twice.

I've made it to one convention. I have actually

had it happen two other times. where I was all

but on the plane to go to conventions and then

had to cancel at the very last possible second.

Ravies, why are you letting Chuck infect you

all the time now? Chuck's all the way on the

East Coast, man. It's purely coincidental. We

don't even share soda cans or anything. But you

do share a Skype window. Yeah, but I mean I keep

I keep some Clorox wipes handy so never go to

video Never never ever never go to video Yes,

yes, yeah, that's Joe con We got a big set of

figures at the 12 inch collectors will get and

that will get We could talk about that. It's

a weekend pack full of guests and celebrities

as they call them Joe liberties We'll get to

see the movie on Friday. We'll have a private

screening for that. So Yeah, we're weird. That

was awesome. Yeah the last time we rise a Cobra

we the con was like a week or two after rise

of Cobra came out and it kind of lost a little

bit of luster of course the film itself was we

already know what what skid mark thinks about

it, but You know, the movie itself wasn't that

bad, but it kind of lost the luster a week or

two after the fact when everyone's already seen

it and then we're going to go sit there and see

it again. I mean, the new movie here, no one's

seen. No one's seen, yeah. And just to defend

my own damn opinion here, when I first saw it,

when I first saw it on a free Redbox rental...

Free Redbox rental. Yeah, free Redbox rental.

Damn right, because I wasn't paying for that

shit. I did. I... When I first saw it, I was

like, no, no, no, no, no. The only thing that

got right was Destro at the end. And then since

then, I've gone back, and I've watched it a couple

more times, and it's tolerable. Oh, OK, we moved

to tolerable status. OK. Yeah. But retaliation

looks 1 ,000 times better. Oh, I'm so excited

to go see this. Well, they've really marked up

the cast, too. I mean, we've got, of course,

The Rock as Roadblock. We've got Bruce Willis

as General Joe Colton. I believe we've got Burgess

Meredith as Gallobulus. No, I'm sorry. That's

a mistake. I'm sorry. No, that's TFG1, Mike.

That's my mistake there. Yeah. I was getting

everybody excited. They thought they were going

to get to see the penguin again, but no, he's

still dead. No Cobra Live for you, so... That's

for the best. No Cobra Live for anyone ever.

Other than comic form. Sad but true. So how much

is the general admission running? Is there any

extra fee for... I know with the Transformer

conventions they charge you just a general admission

and then they have one where you get the exclusives

that come at the convention. How does that work

with the G .I. Joe one? Yeah, there's packages

just like the BotCon that you're probably more

familiar with. They have different packages and

it's the same way with the G .I. Joe Collectors

Club. Of course, it's the same company that's

running it. The American Hero package which consists

of the 15 -figure October guard set. That's 345

for that set. That's 15 figures. Also comes with

a little bonus pin that's inside. Certificates,

programs, lanyards, the whole nine yards there

that you normally would get at a convention for

a convention weekend. Plus a convention attendee

bonus. And for the attendee bonus, which you

could only get if you come to the show. Now,

you can also sign up to be a home front hero,

which is that means you want the set be for whatever

reason you can't make the show. Well, that's

exactly what you'll get. You'll get just the

set and nothing else. And that is the same price.

So really, ultimately, if you want to go, just

pay the 345 or whatever and just come on down

to the show. And then the 12 inch. Set is 315

and the 12 inch set is last man standing. It's

a Joe adventure team Joe versus One of the henchmen

from Mars corporation So they're kind of interweaving

the 12 inch Joe universe into the three and three

-quarter inch universe by making a venture team

fight Mars It's kind of a neat idea Well, they've

been trying to bridge the gap between the collectors

for a while It was kind of a contentious relationship

at first see the transformer collectors really

don't have this you don't have a You're all just

transformer collectors some of you might you

know like like skid mark collect g1 stuff And

then you know maybe maybe you like Beast Wars

stuff But you kind of all get together and kind

of get along the 12 inch stuff want nothing to

do with the three and three -quarter inch stuff

That's nothing offensive to us or them. They

just that's That's not their Joe. We are the

much the other way There are some people that

kind of cross and then there's people that get

into those eight -inch dolls. What's it called

Mike? Sigma 6 I think those were Migos No, those

are mango and those don't count just to clarify

The Transformers fandom is probably the only

fandom that will argue tooth and nail over an

opinion and say that everyone's opinion is wrong

except theirs. Well, Transformers fandom is very,

very cutthroat. As we talked about the other

day, I think it was off air mostly, the Transformers

fandom is so splintered and factioned that they...

Not only chew each other apart depending on which

franchise that they love But they chew each other

apart as far as like you said the opinions So

I mean it's it's so much more splintered than

GI Joe ever would be. Yeah It transformers fandom

is like a bad 80s soap opera. Swear to God it

is Well, I kind of almost oversimplified it for

transformers. You don't have Another we have

to use small words. Yeah You don't have to oversimplify

it. You don't have another scale or an earlier

version of Transformers that was like in the

70s that there's 10 years difference between

the collector's base. That's literally what we're

kind of doing now. There's five to 10 years difference

between a 12 -inch collector and a 3 and 3 quarter

-inch collector. Well, if you look at G1 and

Beast Wars specifically, I know Steve, and he

can... He can cram me on this, but I know Steve

doesn't give a shit about G1. He could care less.

He loves his Beast Wars. Same thing with some

other fans. A lot of fans are G1. It doesn't

matter. It doesn't matter what Hasbro will do.

It doesn't matter if Hasbro makes the most awesome

toy. They just want their G1. So I mean, yeah,

sure, Transformers wasn't in the 70s, but still.

Steve. Yes. Truck not monkey, Steve. No. Truck

not monkey. Monkey not truck. No, better yet,

Dragon not Gun. If you gave me a Transforming

Robot monkey, I'd be one happy dude, so I'm not

going to criticize the monkey. But would the

Collectors Club actually split you guys up into

making a Beast Wars set and a G1 set specifically?

No, they mostly like playing with their classics

line. Japanese reissues with a different paint

deco and what they'll do is they'll take Like

a five figure box set it'll have a certain theme

and they'll bring a certain character Into it

from another series and then make it that theme

The comic this year, I believe, for BotCon, or

not the comic, one of the panels, Be in the City

2. It's a collaboration between Animated, Beast

Wars, Megatron, Energon, and something else.

I mean, they'll mash it all together and make

it work. Now, in order to come to the show...

Kind of move on with the question here is kind

of getting into one of those transformer discussions

which Which are unimportant, but you're totally

unimportant right now your cons over There is

a general admission now a general admission is

I'm just showing up I'm going to the sales for

doesn't get me into the panels and the round

tables doesn't get me any toys in terms of stuff

from the club as the sets. I can still go to

the con store and that type of thing, but there's

general admission and it's $15 for adults, $10

for children, for and under free. And general

admission is Saturday and Sunday, Saturday 10

to five, Sunday 930 to 330. There is early bird

admittance on Saturday beginning at nine. If

you want in that bad, you'll just have to pony

up 50 bucks to get in an hour early. So that's

all done at the Hilton. in New Orleans Riverside

Hotel. Nice. Yeah. And pretty much touched on

the... So what are some of the guests that are

coming that people can be psyched to see when

they go? Well, right now, I think they got some

more planned. I think the list is a little slim

for what we've seen in the past, but we have

Will Ryan, who is the son of a voice of Footloose

and Mutt. He will be showing up Lately the club

has been getting into the last couple years certainly

have been they've been getting into the voice

talent last year we had dial tone and the the

voice the voice of dial tone and the voice of

the Baroness on hand to kind of meet and greet

and Since Footloose is a club exclusive figure

club membership exclusive figure this year for

the three and three -quarter collectors They're

bringing in Will Ryan to talk about his work

as Footloose and Mutt on Sunbow A regular returner

to to Joe Khan. We've had he's been a guest for

at least the last five years or so. It's Kirk

Bozigan and he is the Hasbro, the original Hasbro

marketing manager for the creation of the Real

American Hero line back in 1982. And he has some

really interesting stories. I've heard him so

many times. I kind of skipped his his seminars

the last couple of years. I think he's changed

his presentation around a little bit, but it's

uh... talk up the guest here but it's very interesting

how you know even before they got to judge a

concept this is one of the things that they they

want to do a vehicle line and and uh... that

the figures were going to be accessories to the

vehicles and how that kind of spurned into what

we want to bring back g i joe and well how do

we get g i joe back and then all of a sudden

they're going to marvel to talk about advertising

a comic book and then and all that spurned off

and it just interweaves and it's a pretty interesting

story so he'll kind of tell us all about that

Rod Wiggum, the 80s comic book artist, will be

on hand. For the 12 -inch collectors, Larry Selman,

he's the box artist for the classic collection

line, which includes many of the club's packages

as well. He still does artwork for the club.

IDW will have folks on hand. We just don't know

who yet. Fingers crossed for Robert Atkins, friend

of the show. He's always a good guy. Also, another

friend of the show, Mark Belomo. who is the author

of, I don't wanna say real American hero, cause

I think that's more like a noted author, James

Cavanaugh, but. Probably know Mark better by

his reference guides. Full color, very glossy

reference guides of the Joe line from 82 to 94.

He's been a bit of a historian of the line as

of late and he'll be there to talk about some

of the things he's found out about how the file

cards are written, going down, even talking about

maybe how some of the vehicles are made and why.

So those are what we got so far. I'm hoping...

hoping, hoping, hoping we'll have somebody associated

with the movie. When we were in Kansas City,

Rise of Cobra Time, we had the guy that played

heavy duty. So I'm hoping that we will have somebody

in the movie, somebody notable from the movie

at Joe Khan. I don't know if it's going to be

Rock or Bruce Willis, but it would be nice to

have maybe DJ or, I'd like to stare at Adrian

Policki for a while. Yeah. And of course, you

know Debbie will be at the show to Gary so fine

she understands even if she's there I doubt you'll

have that ability. Well, she's gonna have a really

hard time on Bourbon Street then Nice But yeah,

that would definitely be cool to see some some

star power there though representing the the

fandom in the film Especially Sorry, go ahead.

I was going to say, especially with the fact

that this film actually looks like it's going

to make money. Yeah. One of the key people involved

with that is John Chu. He has been extraordinarily

nice to our podcast. He gave us a drop back at

episode 50, which was really, really cool of

him. From what he's told us, he listens to the

show. You do understand that the first G .I.

Joe movie made $300 million worldwide. Yes. And

hopefully this one triples it. Yes. Well, certainly.

I'm just saying that if the first one was a terrible

hit, horrible dismal failure, there would have

been no movie this time around. Not defending

the quality of the first movie. By all means,

we've debated to death, but let's not paint it

as the end of the world, because it was okay.

I like John Chew better than the other end. Well,

look at the... Look at what the other guy did.

He had a mummy, a scorpion king. Really? Yeah.

I'm hoping, really, John Chu is going to come

and speak at Joe Con. That would be awesome.

He's such a very cool dude. I think a lot of

people had the wrong idea about him when he came

on. You're like, Justin Bieber. I admit, I was

just there. I was there, too. Just see what he

did here. I'm a believer. I don't care what he

did with Bieber. The stuff in the trailer definitely

leaves this open for great things. In terms of

making movies, directing an action sequence is

not a whole lot different if you're doing a big

dance scene or if you're doing a big fight scene.

So that actually, seeing what he had done before

said to me that he could handle an action movie.

We know you like your dance numbers. Absolutely.

I'm quite the song and dance man myself, but

anyways. So I wasn't concerned about this movie

from an action standpoint. I was concerned, is

this guy going to care about the characters?

And from what we can tell, yeah, he gives a whole

lot about the characters. Jumping into some more

just kind of general questions. I know that with

the Transformers, they do a customizing of the

class. And I see that the G .I. Joe convention

does one as well. How exactly do those kind of

go? The customizing class will be held on Thursday,

which is actually registration day. It runs from

9 to 5, so it'll get you out just in time so

you can stand in line for registration. And the

Hasbro, one of the lead designers for the Hasbro

Joe team, John Warden, will actually be doing

the class or the session. And it's limited to

30 participants, and there's a cost of $65. Now,

unlike the Transformers custom, which a lot of

people consider kind of part of the Transformers

convention set, it's really not the case with

the Joe custom figure class. You know, their

figure is not really considered part of the set.

All of the figures of the set are part of a story.

Very similar to the Transformers, of course.

I've never been in one. I'm not much of a customizer.

But one of my good pals has, and he says it's

a blast. Basically, there's just buckets of bits.

And you can start picking stuff out and putting

your figure together, and you get to paint it

the whole nine yards. And some of those bits

that you're pulling out are parts that have met

some, are very rare cases, have not been released

yet. An example that I talked about in our special

edition that we posted today, number 12, is that

there's a piece of reactive chest armor that

kind of, you got to pop the head off and then

you can get sided up over the body's torso. And

it was originally slated to be for training Duke,

which got canceled. So they found that in one

of the bins. And then they also found the training

Duke head gear. If he was like sparring in the

ring, there was like head gear. That particular

piece is later coming out with the subscription

figure, Big Boa. But there's some hidden gems

in that box of bits. And that turns a lot of

the customizers on, where they can get in there

and possibly find something that no one else

has had and can make a part of their customized

figure. I think that's more of a better idea

as far as customizing, whereas you're limited

to one specific character design when you go

to the Transformers convention, so I really think

that that's something really cool with the way

Joe handles it. Yeah, you can just, whatever

you want. And I've seen some pretty cool designs,

and I think sometimes Hasbro uses some of those

designs as inspirations for future designs, which

is a good thing too. Yeah, you always want to

get Hasbro on their wheels going so that they

can actually come up with something that's worth

buying. Yeah. Unlike a lot of crap on the transformer

side. So what exactly can people look forward

to at the Casino Night Awards Dinner? Casino

Night, when you register... As a regular attendee,

I think you get like one or two hundred casino

dollars. It's funny money. And you get in there

casino night and they have blackjack and roulette

and craps. And actually, if you're not interested

in any of that stuff, you can go play bingo a

couple of rooms over. But basically, you sit

there and you gamble with funny money, get more

money, and then you could pool your resources

together with other people. And at the end of

the evening, then they have a big auction. And

with this funny money, you could start bidding

on prizes from the club. And sometimes they're,

for instance, my wife got in with a bunch of

guys from Joe Customs. They pooled their money

together and they got one of the highly sought

after loose fuchsia sets, which is the 2002 Crimson

Strike team that kind of came. kind of shipped

originally from the factory a little bit more

pink than they wanted. So they call it fuchsia

and they've had these sets forever and they just

always kind of give them out as prizes. So out

of that set, I got the Baroness, which is the

solo figure and a one trooper. And so they kind

of split it up amongst the people that put in

the money. You could get that. You could also,

there's other past exclusives from Joe Khan,

not only three and three quarter items, but 12

inch items. In the past, there's also been movie

stuff, whether it be standups, or stuff that

you would see at point of sale type stuff in

the stores. They would be giving those out. Autographs

of actors or famous Joe celebrities. And that's

what Casino Night and the auction does. And there's

also a little bit of an award segment which will

award the winners of basically the custom contest

and the diorama contest and the fan film fest.

Very cool. I also see that they have a fan film

screening. Is there anybody that you guys have

talked to on your podcast that is planning on

entering that or is that just more so the general

public? We've had Mark Chang on before with Operation

Red Retrieval and I believe at one point he was

talking about possibly submitting. The thing

is, it might be a bit more violent than they

really prefer for this. So I haven't followed

up with them on whether or not it will be there.

If it is, that's truly one of the best fan films,

actually the best fan film so far to date. uh...

another friend of the show uh... fred doss is

also working on gi joe initiate and i don't know

if that will be done in time uh... there's been

some if you are going to believe i believe fred

is only shooting now so i i doubt that that'll

be ready to go back in the tight any time uh...

there was if you want to call it huge there's

been like some stop -motion photography done

before some uh... fan films uh... They're OK.

I'm looking for a little bit more action. But

then again, you have to keep it PG or G. And

I'm not quite sure if Red Retrieval can get in

there. Nice. It's pretty violent. Now we should

point out that there also is a costume contest,

also known as the noted author James Cavanaugh

Jr. Memorial Costume Contest. uh... friend of

the show one of our substitute host he's won

the contest or play second every year since he's

been in it so nice uh... they they advertise

it you can come dressed as cosplay but if you

see james walking up here probably gonna lose

pretty much pretty much now maybe i'm set the

bar high for james this year i don't know well

it and and with james it's not so much the question

is it's not that his costumes are necessarily

of the highest quality it's what it it's it's

the amount of shame that he doesn't feel well

it's one thing to show up and i remember it i

was at the atlantic convention there are there

are some folks there that had some really really

great costumes there was just a there was some

dude who is probably he he was the spitting image

of what flint would have been in nineteen eighty

five i mean there was there was somebody another

somebody else in a flash costume that was just

outstanding yes there is an absolutely amazing

cobra commander costume uh... the guys we know

from the coil showed up as as as the three cobra

law characters uh... it but that therein lies

the rub is that a year you're just not beaten

james cavanaugh jr noted author james cavanaugh

jr as the lobbyists No shame shirtless Mostly

shirtless legs bound together in worm form Wow,

I mean you just you're not stopping this man.

This is this is a guy who showed up his crystal

ball one year Complete with you know with the

with the furry vest. I believe the hypno shield

and a hypno shield, then a couple years ago showed

up again as Crimson Crystal Ball in honor of

the club's reissue of the Crimson Sabotage set,

or Crimson what set, what's it called? The Crimson

Strike Team. Well, the Crimson Strike Team. He

showed up as Crystal Crimson Ball with a red

Cobra sigil shaved into his chest hair. Wow.

So, go big. Or go home. Or just be content to

finish in third place. We haven't even talked

about Pythona yet. I was trying to forget that.

I still see Pythona when I close my eyes. Let

me guess, just did that. No. No, no, no. Again,

disturbing and wrong at the same time, but sounds

hilarious. It's all of those things and more.

I mean really, at some point they're just going

to have to admit that he's kind of a staffer

for that weekend and just let him in on all that

stuff because I think James has done more to

drum up interest in the convention than any one

single fan could possibly do on his own. Okay,

I know this won't do any good for people at home.

Oh no, you better not be showing us. But if you

look in the chat window... There you go and there

there you go Wow That is hilarious, yeah, that's

a rated X costume right there No, but it's close

Wow, yes And of course we have pictures of them

threatening the guy in the Cobra commander suit

We have we have pictures of them threatening

Fred Meyer of Joe battle lines, so so did they

have the spores and and Faceplate off no, but

I I don't want to know what what James was keeping

in his his green sleeve I Encounter James later

that evening several several cocktails later

that evening He was a little too drunk to talk,

but he was still managing to walk around in the

globulus worm suit. So it's really fascinating

how the man's brain operates. Now, when he won

in 2010, he actually tied. It was a tie for first.

The guy that tied with him was another friend

of ours. He was dressed as a pterodrome. So he

had the he wore the top of the pterodrome like

a hat like a big sombrero Kind of had a the other

half of the pterodrome kind of pieced around

his by now our friend is a large person he has

some girth on him, but The funny thing was is

there was another guy and he just put a ton of

money into his costume And it looked great. It

was fantastic He lost because it was his first

show and no one really knew him and everyone

knew James and everyone knew our other friend

and they cheered for him. And that's how they

they judge a show is based upon how loud your

applause is. Well, if you get enough liquor in

us, I mean, we're going to be very loud anyways.

So we're cheering for James. And so after the

fall of the show and the forums, you see this

guy post on the forums that he got beat by a

guy dressed in drag and another fat guy dressed

as a pterodrome. And I'm like, oh, bitcher, bitcher,

bitcher. Gotta love sour grapes in the fun costume

contest. But it's a good time. And if you see

James, James last year was Bullet Man. Are you

guys familiar with Bullet Man? No. Oh, man. Can't

say that I have. That's for the best. Really,

that's for the best. uh... it's with a sock with

stuff that's that's all i have to say yeah you

know gary's gonna find something else uh... another

picture that uh... your show that's not click

no freaking words yeah just it's it's for the

best that's for the best again it's it's hilarious

and horrifying all at the same time so that's

chucks wallpaper right it's it's possible it's

possible Sorry, had to throw in the low blow.

Anything else that you guys want to bring up

in wrapping this up? Go ahead, Mike. Anything

that we want to say, wrapping up. I mean, JoCon,

it's a fun time. If you can get down to it, we

heartily recommend it. It's a great way to meet

your fellow Jo fans. You meet people at JoCon

that will probably be your friends for the rest

of your life it's it's you know that it's it's

it's not just who you happen to live close to

its you know you you don't have to worry about

you know what you look like in public because

everybody who's there is just as big of a dork

as you are there's there's no robots around it's

of and not the robot thing it's nothing Because

coming up. Oh, wow. He's not kidding when you

create friendships that last. I'm still talking

with and seeing every year that the same people

that I met my very first one and we're now regular

mainstays. The memories of just a costume contest

to noted author James Cavanaugh and just the

hours spinning up at night BSing the new Hasbro

product or the anticipation of waiting to see

that new that what you're going to see for the

rest of the year. You got the movie coming out.
