Ge Hello and welcome to the geek cast radio network
2012 year in Yeah, so the Mayans lied to us Hello
and welcome to the geek cast radio network 2012
year in review. I am one of your host do you
do and Mike and joining me is Will you roll Dan?
Hello. Hello and Steve joker Tron. Hello well
you know there you know you and your death of
the family and take you bastard today we're going
to recap moments from twenty twelve uh... in
general also recap the year that the d cast radio
network has had dan what have you been up to
you make a lot of top lists for the end of the
year and just yes i've been uh... kind of doing
all that was movies twenty twelve uh... putting
everything together in different Best of lists,
different awards that are meaningless but fun
to do nonetheless. I have a few still to come
out by the time this is out. My best female performances,
male performances, my top ten movies, which will
go over this podcast as well as my top ten docs
will be at. Still trying to kind of catch up
on some of the movies I missed this year because
a lot of the great stuff is starting to come
out on home media. So trying to catch that stuff.
So it's been a busy holiday season with all that
and then, you know, all the family stuff too,
like it's in the way. Yeah, that's true speaking
of family stuff. We have a Megatron jr. Amongst
us now Congratulations to Steve and his wife
for the birth of their first child yes in November
Yes, he's actually giving us some sleep at night
What have you been up to Steve besides Taking
care of your mini you well, that's where it gets
a little complicated Aiden, what the hell is
Complimicated? It's a slang word from Flint,
Michigan. Apparently so. Yeah, candy ass. You're
not even from Kentucky. Anyways, I still talk
like a hick. And you do a mighty convincing job
of it, so. No, I with my son being born it kind
of Put a lot of my my shows at a standstill because
obviously life comes first and then also So that's
why some of our shows have been kind of that
at least involved me have been kind of MIA temporarily
also, I Due to the terrible terrible job market
here in Flint Michigan area I'm going back to
school so that I can try and get a Degree so
I can try and get a job even if it means I have
to move afterwards, but so that starts in January
and I'm not looking forward to going back to
school That's where the Billy Madison song would
Come in but uh But yeah, so I mean I got to do
that and Then in addition to that so I will be
very scarce over the following year unless I
find a job that Pays enough to let my wife stay
at home to watch my son. Otherwise, it's going
to be a hectic hectic freaking year coming up
And also I got my my webcam for Christmas for
my wife. So I should at least be able to do my
altered geek show and some various other stuff
on my YouTube channel, which will be also syndicated
over on geekcastradio .com. And I'm going to
try and do the occasional show if I can get time,
but I have no idea how that's going to be with
school and everything else. Yeah. Well, like
you said, life comes first. I still will have
the behind the scenes presence, but I may not
be on very much. Show -wise for a bit. So we're
at least gonna eventually try and get Legends
of the Dark Knight to episode, you know after
the films and then kind of cut it off before
beyond If we can squeeze right in there somewhere.
So Yep And for myself Been trying to get Tooncast
Beyond Season 2 done Scheduling conflicts abound
which is fine Tooncast Beyond was It's been great.
It's been what I wanted it to be with changing
the entire Tooncast classic format into seasons
and doing more of reviews of stuff that is happening
now versus the classic stuff and that was Had
had that vision since I think about episode 90
of Tooncast classic of you know doing it cartoons
in the now but after going through oh I don't
even know how many DreamWorks movies. I am just
burnt out on that show So Tooncast Beyond is
gonna be retired for this year It is still an
active show. It is still one of our flagship
shows But Season 3 will not happen this year.
We haven't even finished Season 2 yet. It will
not happen in 2013. It may possibly start late
2013 into 2014. I don't know. It's one of those
things where you do something long enough or
you do one thing long enough where you need a
break from it and I just need a break from it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll get to that in a second
never doing that again but Yeah, Tooncast Beyond
is still one of the flagship shows that always
will be it will come back eventually But I need
to step away from it for a while and and do other
stuff uh... let's see what else is going on uh...
yeah dan mentioned and wire and the bond spotlight
that we did for them like the last five weeks
of twenty twelve uh... i'm kinda glad we did
it now celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of
bond versus doing it where i had it scheduled
in them were a couple years down the line uh...
i'm glad that it's over yes we only reviewed
eighteen out of the twenty three films but let's
face it those other films well a couple of the
other films just no one needs to ever see them
Bond in Space give me a break look see a day
and I had done that M wire will obviously come
back in 2013 we're gonna do 90s movies we're
gonna do Star Trek and then close to the tail
end of the tail end of the year we're gonna do
the Muppets we're gonna review Muppets stuff
for M wire GCR will continue. GCR on Wars is
supposed to make a huge comeback next year. A
whole bunch of stuff. For this year, shows that
Kevin and I started, Optimus Solo and I started,
Mass Mayhem and Powers of Grayskull series. Tales
of Eternity is going strong. That show is gonna,
we're gonna, we're just blasting through that
show. He and I are having fun talking about that
cartoon. Mass Mayhem? I honestly don't know.
Yes, we will finish it before the end of 2013,
but as of right now I have no interest to watch
any more mass cartoons than we already have that
that show is just So horrible So yeah, that's
that's pretty much what I've been up to Also,
we have to thank Everyone that has contributed
to the network, you know Dan and all of his blogging
the occasional blog from Steve and all the podcasts
that we've done for 2012. Even though they had
a rough year with that nine month pregnancy pushback,
we have to thank What's on Joe Mind and the whole
retaliation stuff and everything they've done.
Star Joe's has been a nice addition with more
so a general pop culture type of comics and assembly
of everything. Stuff that we probably wouldn't
even talk about, so thank you to them. Not that
I set out to break records every year, especially
with this next topic I'm going to bring up. When
I approach an agent or a person for an interview,
it's because I really want to talk to that person
or because myself and Michael Wilson or Steve
or whomever really want to have a conversation
with that person. It isn't to get our interview
numbers up, but we did. break last year's record
of interviews. We had 15 new interviews this
year and we have to go down the list and thank
every single one of those people because it was
so amazing for them to take out their time out
of their day and night and whatever to sit there
and talk with us. In January, we had for the
second time back, we had Rob Paulson on Tooncast
Beyond. We talked about his podcast, his upcoming
book. All that good stuff Optimus Solo and Steve
talked to John Delancey in February. Yes Q Yeah,
that was awesome for you guys. Mm -hmm. Yeah
Steve myself and Tara Talked to Lauren Lester,
the voice of Dick Grayson Robin from BTIS also
in February. That was a cool interview. I love
talking to Lauren. I could talk to that guy all
day long. Oh, I know. That was such a great interview.
So amazing. And he liked my Joker. Yes. Yes.
In March, Michael Wilson and I talked to Dan
Gilbazan, who started calling Michael Terry for
some strange reason. Because he didn't want to
call you guys Michael and Michael. Yeah, I know.
How about I just call you Terry? Yeah. In April,
Baltmatrix and I talked with author Leonard Kinsey
about his book The Dark Side of Disney. That
was really interesting. I know a lot of people
go to Disney World and a lot of the Disney parks
for the stuff that's there, but if you want a
full -on adult vacation that has nothing to do
with the actual parks, read The Dark Side of
Disney because he gives you all kinds of insights
on where adults can have adult fun at the Disney
parks. That was very, very interesting and awesome.
uh... in may uh... we did a uh... until michael
our project crossover with gcr where they talked
with phil lamar for about an hour so so that
was cool government get them that interview we
had two interviews in june the first being the
god damn batman himself it only took me about
a year and a half to get that interview but we
talked with uh... kevin conroy that was awesome
yes yes it was Yes, we're still holding out hope
for Mark Hamill. I'll be working on that in 2013,
hopefully. For the goddamn Joker! It doesn't
work the same way, sorry. Also in June, Michael
Wilson again and I talked with Greg Berger, voice
of Grimlock, that was very cool. over on from
the command center in july uh... scottie cash
and i've scottie cash from pop culture network
and i talked with uh... jason david frank the
green white red black however many color rangers
he was as tommy oliver that was freaking awesome
uh... you know if you told the thirteen -year
-old self of myself when i was watching that
show back in the nineties that i would eventually
talk to that guy i would have never believed
it Sadly, I didn't schedule the next one properly
because Steve kind of got cut out of it. Sorry,
but I talked with Chuck Durant and Stacey J.
Eswad from View Buzz Weekly in July as well.
In August, how many of us talked? Was it just
me and Michael? It was three. It was me, you,
and Michael, right? Yep. Steve, myself, and Michael
Wilson talked with Steve Bloom. That was freaking
awesome. That was so cool And then I who was
on the Keaton interview you guys yeah, I think
it was me and Michael Michael and I Michael Wilson,
and I talked with Josh Keaton voice of Hal Jordan
Green Lantern Jack Darby from Transformers Prime
All that good stuff very very awesome interesting
interview I of course because something happened
in the land of old school Transformers this year,
had an update interview with Stan Bush again
talking about his The Touch power remixes since
Fall of Cybertron came out and he had a new version
of The Touch in there, which you can find in
ATTF version 2 .0 episode 28. Michael Wilson
actually brought us an interview, Imari Williams,
who is... The Voice of Boulder on TF Rescue Bots,
very, very cool. What I find interesting about
the Josh Keaton and Amari Williams interviews
is that both of them have said, have told us
that they would just want to come back and just
talk geek with us. So that was very, very cool
of them. And the final one we did, it was something
I did. There's a web show out there on EpicLevelTV
.com and you find it on YouTube as well called
Space Guys in Space. It's this little web show,
very, very awesome, stars Jason Marsden, Nicole
Pacent, and Dave Levine. And it's got voiceover
by Phil Lamar. It's even got an episode with
Phil in it. Space Guys in Space, very, very,
very awesome, so cool. But yes, thank you to
everybody who... who took time out to talk with
us this year. That was so, so awesome. So what
additions in 2012 did we add, Steve? As far as
the website? As far as the website, as far as
new people to the network, I know we added Star
Joe's. Yeah, we added Star Joe's, the lunch table
crew. joined us full -time in the sense of they
started doing XRG, taking over from the failed
attempt that we did the previous year. Of course,
they do it when they have time because one of
the guys is married, has kids and everything,
so that kind of takes away from it too. Then
we also got I'm trying to think. Having a little
bit of brain damage here. A lot more blogs from
all of us, mainly Dan and you. I got some DC
-related reviews loaded on the site. We got some
of Michael Wilson's stuff syndicated over. Yeah,
very awesome. We attempted to launch GCRN live,
which failed miserably. I'll work on that for
2013. Now that I have a webcam, I'll try and
play around with that a little bit in my spare
time, especially because my college courses are
going to be predominantly audio video in reference.
Sweet. So yes, I shall have professional experience
by the end of it. So when we say we are professionals,
we really mean it. Yeah Yeah I've revamped most
of the website color design everything. It's
no longer the plain blue It's no longer Pete
kes radio .com. It's G Sarah and media and entertainment
There's still a lot of stuff where we're branching
out we're Still growing in a lot of different
areas as far as the site We will be involved
with a convention next year due to the fact that
I am now their graphic designer. How I have time
for all the random shit going on, I don't know.
But yet I do. So we will have a presence at Grand
Con in Grand Rapids, Michigan, September of 2013.
So it'll be myself and the XRG crew there. But
I'm pretty sure, I think that's about it as far
as site features. I mean, besides some menu reorganizations,
some new categories, added articles, reviews,
it's gonna get another facelift. 2013 the menu
structure mostly not the entire site But something
will change the show categories thing on the
main page will be removed and replaced with something
else at one site figure out what Yeah, but there's
not gonna be that many main website changes in
2013 No, not in year four. We are working on
slowly, because you have so much on your plate.
We are slowly working up and keeping our eye
out for year five. Once we hit year five here
at GCRN, the entire site will change. And that
will be whatever those changes are will be our
main design, finalized design type of thing to
where we're not changing it every single year.
Yeah, it will be for the foreseeable future.
And then, of course, I'll add. things here or
there like I've done with this edition. Right,
exactly. But I don't plan on doing heavy again
for a while. Alright, so we've got to take a
moment of silence here because a lot of people
have passed away in 2012. Yes. The one that is
strangely coming to my mind is Whitney Houston.
I don't know why. That's the only one I can think
of without actually looking at a list. We had
Michael Clark Duncan, I think. Yeah, Michael
Clark Duncan passed away. We had Tony Scott.
Yeah, he passed away. That was really sad. We
had Dick Clark, who will not be there for the
first New Year's since, what, the 60s? Yeah,
I think so yeah somewhere around there really
70s at least but Damn what were you gonna say
Dan any Griffith that passed away Andy Griffith.
Yeah. Oh, yeah Adam Yoch does I'm a big fan of
the Beastie Boys and MCA passed for this year.
Yeah, I'm Etta James the famous singer Mike Wallace
the The anchor for 60 minutes, you know, he's
been an icon in for news media for a long time
Sherman Hemsley, mr. Jefferson, you know, the
Jeffersons passed away this year One of the astronauts
from the 60s, oh, yeah Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong
passed away as well. And again, we're not looking
at a list at a list currently. So these are just
our top of our head. Most memorable in our minds.
Yeah. Yeah. He also wants to remember the most.
Yeah. Oh, and the and Ernie Borgner. Oh, yeah.
Poor Dom. Oh, man. I remember. Mainly remember
him from air wolf. He was awesome as Dominic
Santini and air wolf He wasn't so much TV's movies
and his career is extensive Yeah, there was a
Yeah, there was a Christmas movie like one of
those hallmark life Hallmark lifetime ABC ABC
family movies a cult like a year and a half or
two years ago Where he played a grandfather and
I was like I didn't even know the guy was still
alive Honestly, I had no idea at the time and
I was like, oh he looks pretty good for his age
I think the sag awards. I think it was last year
gave him their Career Achievement Award and right.
Yeah. He I mean he you can tell like he was he
was getting up there He seemed pretty good though
for his age, but you know, fortunately, you know
as As it comes he passed away not not too long
ago Yeah So may they all rest in peace and they
will be missed but never forgotten. Up next we're
going to talk about some top lists. Each of these
will be their own segment and you will hear different
possibly themes or clips like mini clips from
each of our lists. First up is top five artists
or albums. I'm pretty much going to be the only
one doing this so check it out as we listen to
this musical clip. Originally when I wrote this
list up I put top five artists or albums last
year when we did the 2011 show. It was just albums
and I kind of went back to that. I do have to
give a huge honorable mention and shout out to
a lot of the voice season three contestants.
The winner Cassidy Pope, absolutely love her,
glad she won the show. Terry McDermott, very
very awesome Scottish rock singer. Adriana Louise
Devon DeLora Liz Davis love all those people
as well so the voice season three this year was
absolutely amazing getting into my list here
number five I never thought I would ever do this
again and the last time I really bought an album
from this person was when her debut came out
back in the 90s this year I got Alanis Morissette's
havoc in the bright lights I got another recommendation
from one of my Facebook friends Chris Sunday
And it's a damn good album. I didn't think it
was going to be that great. I've liked Alanis'
songs here and there over the years, but I've
never liked whole albums from her. But this whole
album is pretty damn good. Number four. A man
that knows how to make music for movies and television.
Brian Tyler's Transformers Prime season one soundtrack.
This is amazing. When I first saw this on Amazon,
I was like, oh, because usually Amazon only shows
like a certain number of tracks. When I first
saw it pre -order on Amazon, I was like, oh,
so it's going to be 12 or 16 tracks. Uh -uh.
25 tracks of music from this guy. You may have
also heard his music in Fast Five and Paparazzi.
A bunch of other stuff that he's done. Absolutely
amazing. it just goes to show you how awesome
Transformers Prime is because the music in it
is just stellar. Number three comes in with Stan
Bush and the Touch remixes. There are two versions.
There's the Power Mix and then there's the Epic
Guitar Mix. The Epic Guitar Mix is featured in
Fall of Cybertron, the new Transformers game
that came out this year. Again, Stan just kind
of knocked it out of the park with these two
remixes a lot better than when he tried to do
the Sam's theme version. I wasn't too much of
a fan of that. Number two is one of my all -time
favorite rock bands, 12 Stones, with their new
album Beneath the Scars. Very, very cool of them
that they released. And number one... And again,
it's because of the voice that I even paid any
attention to this. Christina Aguilera's Lotus.
Absolutely love that album. It's such a great,
great album. So there you go with that. And up
next we're going to talk about some TV shows.
We'll be back after this clip. This is not a
story about forgiveness. When I was a little
girl. My understanding of revenge was as simple
as two wrongs don't make a right. Do you know
how much I love you, Amanda? Infinity times infinity.
But when everything you love has been stolen
from you, someone has to pay. It's one of the
most expensive zip codes in the world. Welcome
to the Hamptons. You won't find a better address
than this. I'll take it. Their lives are private.
Do you think I'm tan enough for my first day
on the beach? What you need is another bathing
suit. This is practically a burka. Their community
is exclusive. Gray's suit boy is kinda cute.
That's the tragically privileged Daniel Grayson.
Their secrets are shocking. And one woman will
do whatever it takes. Emily's new to the Hamptons,
but she really wanted to take part in your fundraiser.
To destroy them. I try to give back as much as
I can. Coming to ABC. I'm Daniel. Emily. Welcome
home, Daniel. Hi, Mom. I'd hate to be on her
bad side. Yes, you would. Some forgive. Have
Miss Davis escorted off the boat. You're not
a part of this. But I can be just as powerful
an enemy as any one of them. But all she wants
is revenge. To chance meetings. To an unforgettable
summer. ABC's Revenge. Coming Wednesdays this
fall 10 .9c to ABC. Come on Sheldon, Star Wars.
I'm pushing play. I mean, if we don't start soon,
George Lucas is gonna change it again. That's
nice. Too bad it's wrong. What do you mean wrong?
You made an arithmetic mistake on page two. It
was quite a boner. No, no. That can't be right.
I don't make arithmetic mistakes. Are you saying
I do? Oh no. No, of course not. I was thinking...
Oh gosh golly. I made a boo -boo. And I gave
it to Stephen Hawking. Great. Another feature.
So let's talk some TV. This will be our top five
TV shows of the year. This can also include stuff
that's returned from the previous year or years.
Let's get the honorable mentions out of the way
first. Dan, what are your honorable mentions
for TV for 2012? Two that dismissed the list
for me were Modern Family and Falling Skies.
Two good shows just didn't make it to my top
five. And then there are some shows that Haven't
finished washing or in the process of finishing
so I didn't include them which are Louie breaking
bad and madmen So I didn't consider them eligible
since I haven't I'm still catching up on all
those seasons. So right, right What is your your
actual list for your TV for the year Dan, okay
Well starting at number five is community. I
probably would be higher on my list if it had
more episodes Okay, he's a showrunner so we're
young people curious how that's gonna turn out
But I think still an amazing show losing season
3 I think it ended off at a high note some amazing
television that I can't believe was actually
on Network TV on NBC But like for example the
near the end of this and they had an entire episode
of the on of like 8 -bit, you know video game
And that was it, which was crazy for a network
television program. But that was my number five.
It has a great heart. It's a funny show. If you
like geek culture, it's a perfect show. And it's
really surprised me the way it's gone and how
it's developed over the last few years and continues
to get better and better. They had an awesome
Law and Order episode, which was the best homage
and parody I've ever seen on television in recent
memory. What's your number four? Number four
is Game of Thrones. I actually didn't start watching
this until this year. I kind of marathoned season
one. I think I watched us all season one within
a few days and couldn't wait for season two to
come out and I thought that was just as good
as the first season. Major production value being
on HBO definitely allows them to get away with
a lot, but it's... If you never watched it, if
you're a fan of things like Lord of the Rings,
I never read the books, unfortunately, but I
love the movie, I love the TV show, and I can't
wait to see what happens in season three. But
yeah, that's my number four, Game of Thrones.
My number three is The Walking Dead. I think
it's now in season three. Season two, I think,
ended really well. A lot of people had issues
with its pacing, it was taking a long time for
things to happen. I think season... Two we saw
we started to see it build things up and this
year for season three has been the best season
thus far like every episode is almost like A
season finale with how much stuff happens. No
one's safe Like, you know any character any moment
we can die which really makes for great television
so it has zombies and and a whole lot of fun
and I I can't believe what that gets away with
on cable because it's gory, it's disgusting,
but a lot of fun. My number two. Is new girl?
Yeah, she's the only common. Well, I guess the
second comedy on my list on Fox It's a show I
initially dismissed because I thought it was
just kind of about you know, so he day Chanel
She's too she's cute, but too weird to get guys,
but it really isn't that at all. It's hilarious
I think to me. It's a funny show on television
I don't watch a lot of TV, but it's a show that
I keep going back to again and again the roommates
on that or Outstanding they have the awesome
thing like the douchebag jar There's so many
awesome jokes that are just thrown in there that
you can easily miss like you know IKEA is just
high -stake Legos like all these little tiny
quips that are just thrown in there It's it's
awesome for people who have dismissed that it's
kind of like a girl show It isn't it's it's one
show that I can appreciate and so can my wife
and there aren't many shows out there that can
do that And my number one is a newsroom One of
the few shows so a lot of shows I can watch and
catch up to when catch up with them whenever
but newsroom was when I wanted to watch every
episode Right when it aired huge fan of Aaron
Sorkin. I love the West Wing loves the social
network and sports night So super excited for
this show and doesn't didn't disappoint for me.
I love how they integrated all real -life news
stories into A drama about people and Jeff Daniels
is fantastic. He's both hilarious and can be
really deep and he's a great actor. But yeah,
that was my favorite show by far this year. It
was Newsroom. Damn it. All right, Steve, what
is your top list for TV? Yes, now that I've come
up with mine in the interim redux of this part.
Shut up, you're breaking the fourth wall, you
asshole. You're not supposed to do that. I didn't
break the fourth wall. You are no Ferris Bueller,
sir. Co -founder privilege. What's your list?
You got any honorable mentions first before you
do your list? I don't actually have any honorable
mentions. I actually did narrow it down to what
I've actually watched on television. Well, I
mean, I kind of have some honorable mentions.
Shark Tank is one that I kind of like watching
just because I like to see what kind of stupid
things people come up with. I mean, some are
good, but most of the time they're dumb. And
then I think that's it for my honorable mentions.
Out of my top five shows, I'd have to say that
Last Man Standing is my number five just because
I love Tim Allen comedy shows. And I particularly
like this one over home improvement. I know that
they're more like one off kind of thing more
so. But it's I just find it humorous to watch
the show. My only pet peeve with the show this
season over last season is they changed the actress
for Kristen and then. And then Boyd, the son,
has somehow aged significantly since the first
season. It's the magic of TV. Yes. But only a
year has traveled. And the baby daddy is always
around and he's kind of annoying. East Canadian,
what do you expect? I'm not making that comment.
No disrespect to the one Canadian we have on
board. My number four is revolution This shows
about the lights turning off and everybody fighting
to turn them back on and These two friends that
are on opposite sides of the fence now Trying
to prevent one or the other from gaining control
and it's Proving to be pretty interesting to
begin with I was kind of like, okay, come on
get on with it and then the midseason finale
the bad guy friend Now has access to a powered
-up helicopter So it's about to get very interesting
So that show has potential unlike some of the
other ones that have been on in the past on those
surrounding stations. I don't remember what some
of them were. Right. My next show is Arrow. I
would have ranked this higher only if I could
see it go a little bit further. This year, being
that this is a newbie to the list, Arrow If you're
a fan of DC Comics for one or if you want as
close as you're gonna ever get to Batman on TV
again This is probably your answer The only thing
that my pet peeve with this show is It seems
like some of the stuff is dragging on a little
bit much in areas. I mean I like the show, but
I feel like it's I Still don't quite fully know
what the hell is going on So I'm just waiting
to see what else they do with it. Although it
is highly ranked, so I don't see it getting cancelled.
My number two would be Big Bang Theory, because
that show is funny as hell as always. We're still
trying to figure out if Raj is gay or not in
the show. He doesn't even quite know. I think
the Christmas episode this year kind of sealed
the deal. He wants he wants girls but he wants
to hang with the girls and so it's kind of there
it's like that uh that Pat joke on SNL You will
never know and so that's that's that's kind of
funny, but then then you have you know the Boyfriend
girlfriend stuff going on and Sheldon actually
starting to become more functional in society
because his girlfriend is forcing him to. Yes.
Especially in the episode where she made him
have to touch her all over, pretending she was
sick. Sick, yeah. That was hilarious. My number
one show would be Supernatural because unlike
the sixth and seventh season, the eighth season
has actually picked it back up by its pants and
pulled them up. for once instead of letting them
drag around its ankles for the last two seasons.
Because season six and seven, I don't think they
had a clue where they were going. Season eight,
I can see where they're going somewhat, but it's
it's the writing has significantly gotten better
around. It's gotten the equivalent of season
one through three again, right in the season
eight. So I I'm really pumped for that show again.
But yeah, that's my top five. All right. For
me, as Dan and Steve were talking, I have about
the same amount of honorable mentions as is actually
my top list. Dan mentioned the newsroom. I was
only able to see the pilot of that. Absolutely
loved it. I cannot wait till that comes to DVD.
If it's already on DVD, I need to go get it like
yesterday. As Steve said with Last Man Standing
an error last man standing pissed me off to no
end when it premiered because of the fact that
they did recast Kristen and because Last Man
Standing started airing the second season the
new season during the election it was all electoral
based jokes and i just i just didn't care first
episode actually cared about her actually enjoyed
actually left that was the christmas episode
the fact that he's come up with a hit on christmas
i thought that was hilarious uh... arrow i haven't
been able to keep up with uh... you know i was
out of town for about three or four days and
and everything else and i just haven't kept up
with it uh... but i do like the show i like where
it's going uh... two other ones really quickly
uh... comic book men is in its second season
on amc following the walking and talking dead
uh... comment is pretty interesting they tell
some interesting stories and have some interesting
people come into their store it's basically kevin
smith's friends uh... walt flanagan uh... brian
johnson ming chen michaels absec uh... at jay
and silent bob's secret stash in new jersey it's
essentially comic books mixed with pawn stars
but i think it's really cool and it's it's very
interesting so i'm liking watching that um and
the other one i thought was going to be really
really good and it is i just haven't again i
just haven't kept up with it was vegas starring
uh dennis quaid and uh michael chicliss absolutely
amazing show so great i hope that gets picked
up for my top list uh i only have one new show
on this list um which is number five chicago
fire new show on NBC new show from Dick Wolf
didn't even I didn't see that coming until I
saw the credits when I saw the pilot. I really
like it. I think it's interesting. I think it's
nice that we finally have a firefighter procedural
back on TV. I thought that was really cool. You
can have all the ERs and Grey's Anatomies and
all this other stuff and all the police procedurals
and crime dramas and all that stuff, but I think
it's really cool that they're finally putting
firemen into the limelight for TV again. Law
and order SVU is number four again in its 14th
season still going strong Absolutely amazing
last year They left it on a cliffhanger with
season 13 and it paid off so many times this
year with the season 14 premiere Number three
is the Big Bang Theory this show Does something
that no other comedy on television does it started
off not necessarily making fun of geek culture,
but kind of showing you What geek culture would
be on TV? I enjoy this so much more than community.
I just I cannot get I cannot laugh at community
at all Maybe I need to see the 8 -bit episode.
I don't know how many episodes. I just how many
episodes of community have you watched? Like
three or four from the first season. I mean the
first season I think takes it takes a while for
it to really get its feet guy Just yeah, I just
couldn't get into a bit but big bang. I've been
there from the beginning absolutely awesome This
season is just absolutely great. They just had
their Christmas episode as I mentioned and it's
just What I love about big bang is that it as
I said a second ago in the beginning it started
You know kind of showing you geek culture and
all that stuff and kind of made fun of it a little
bit But as the shows progressed over the five
seasons six seasons It's now focusing more on
character driven stories amongst this group with
this year They brought in Stewart almost full
-time because Rob because not Raj Howard went
to space this year So they had to bring in someone
for Raj to hang out with while Howard was in
space and they brought in Stuart, the guy that
owns the comic book store. So I thought that
was really interesting. So keep on truckin',
Big Bang. Number two is The Voice. Second season
in a row that I've watched. I've watched season
two and season three. Absolutely love that show.
Best musical competition on television. Number
one was Revenge. Revenge is back with its second
season this year. I missed it last year. I know
Optimus Solo really gave the show high praise
and I don't disagree with him. I marathoned the
entire first season about three days before the
season two premiere and this show is amazing.
It's just, it's so freaking awesome. I absolutely
love it. So that's it for TV. Let's get animated.
I haven't seen one of those since 1974! 74? You
had a perm back then! Stay off the internet,
Carl! Skirpin' tidal waves, creating nanobots,
or locating Frankenstein's brain. Finding a dodo
bird, painting a continent, or driving her sister
insane. As you can see, there's a whole lot of
stuff to do before school starts this fall. So
stick with us, cause Phineas and Ferb are gonna
do it all. So stick with us, cause Phineas and
Ferb are gonna do it all. a marching band that
needs a major act. That's right. We love cartoons
here at the GCRN. Dan, what is your top five?
Because Dan mixed his, we're doing movies and
actual cartoons on TV with Dan's list. I didn't
do that, but he did, so we'll allow it. But what
is your top five list for cartoons or animated
features? Well, I appreciate you allowing me
to bend the rules for this category. Yeah, unfortunately,
there's not just so much TV I watch, so I kind
of combined both of us here. But for number five,
it's an oldie but a goodie, and I'm still surprised
on how much this cartoon can still stay strong
over 15 years on air, and that's South Park.
I know it's not a comedy for everyone, but its
ability to take stories that are happening right
now and put it into its framework is amazing.
It's not as... It's not as steady as it used
to be, but even in its fifth, you know, whatever
season it's on now, it's still incredible. I
mean, they had a great episode right after the
election where they actually take footage from,
you know, the election night and put it into
their episode. But I love South Park. I love
its social commentary. It's one of the few true
satires out there. And when it's on, there are
a few shows that can match it. So that's my number
five. Number four, it's the first... movie on
my list, and technically a 2011 film, but really
2012 for American audiences, and that is The
Cat in Paris. It's a nice little French film,
it's a hand animation, which you don't see that
much anymore. It's a cute little movie, great.
Jazzy soundtrack just about like a cat burglar
a cat and a young girl who gets lost in the mix
It deals with some really strong issues, but
does it in a very cartoonish way? Not but what
was a huge surprise to me. I absolutely love
the animation. It looked beautiful and One of
my favorite cartoons of the year number three
is the Avengers Earth Mightiest Heroes I love
how this cartoon I really wish it a got a season
three, but I love how it combines elements from
Marvel's movies Marvel's current comics and the
comics of the old all into one show it seems
to take the best of all the different categories
and put it into One season and I love it. It
surprises me every Every year I honestly watched
the second season I don't know, within two days,
once it came on Netflix, I marathoned it and
went through it all, and I really wish there
was a season three. I really can't believe they're
ending it after only two seasons. It deserves
so much more, because there's so much more they
can do and so much more they can tap into. Well,
you know the reason why they're ending it, sadly,
is because they need something to tie in with
that huge... Movie that they had yeah, but I
I think I think this already ties into it pretty
well I mean, it's not completely tied into it
But I think you can see definitely see the influence
and how it's the characters I mean the Tony Stark
Iron Man is completely a representation of Robert
Downey jr But I understand why they're doing
it I just wish they kind of kept going with a
good thing because there's been some horrible
Avengers cartoons some really really bad the
the one in the 90s makes you question reality.
So that was my number three. My number two is
another, I guess, directed DVD movie, and that
was The Dark Knight Returns Part One. To me,
the first DC animated movie that really took
advantage of the PG -13 rating. It was adapting
one of the most iconic Batman comic book stories
of all time. We've seen people try to do that
before with The Watchmen, and that hasn't turned
out very well. This was amazing. The voice acting,
the animation, the artistic look, it looked great.
It kept true to the story as much as it possibly
could. I can't wait for part two, but... Honestly,
I think it's the best DC direct animated film
that's come out since they've kind of redone
that format So yeah, I love that cartoon and
number one another movie and that is paranormal
I know a lot of people aren't huge fans of this
movie, but honestly, it's one I dismissed but
really love I love stop -motion animation This
is great. Great for a cast combination of you
know, young children and rising stars again at
Kendrick I love the story. It has a really deep
heart to it, and it really goes into some really
dark places. And it surprised me where it was
willing to go and some great homages to classic
horror and in some unique ways. So that was my
number one animated movie slash TV show of the
year. Yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree on
that one. All right. Say you at least need to
watch it. I don't know if you've checked it out
yet, but it's worth a watch. Between that and
Frank and weenie. I'm done with Halloween themed
Type crap from animation studios Alright so for
me I did top five cartoons as well my animated
stuff will show up in the movies list number
five Green Lantern the animated series They started
season two with the Manhunters And then Cartoon
Network pulled out its dick and put DC Nation
on hold until January or February of 2013 because,
hey, we want people to watch DreamWorks, Dragons
of Berk, Riders of Berk, or whatever the fuck
that stupid Dragons cartoon is. I saw exactly
like four episodes from GL, TAS, Season 2, and
then Cartoon Network just stood up. Fuck you
guys, fuck you DC people, we're just gonna push
it back till January. But Green Lantern continues
to be awesome, very very cool. And number four,
oh god. I get so much mail on this no first of
all no we are not gonna ever do a podcast on
this franchise or review show on this but I have
been going back and I have been watching my little
pony friendship is magic and I am NOT a brony
I do not claim that title whatsoever I am NOT
even original brony when I was a kid my little
pony was for girls damn it Or people who like
girly toys. Hi, Jason DeVall. But no, My Little
Pony Friendship is Magic. It's a damn good show.
I'm currently watching through season one on
Netflix. Really, really enjoying it. Certain
things that just kind of... don't sit right with
me but I will cover that in the blog post in
a future date but it's a really well done cartoon
very good characters great voice acting Tara
Strong is in it very very awesome number three
is Phineas and Ferb as always this show just
amazes me what they can do and what kind of adventures
they go on again it's one of those few cartoon
shows that remains an individualistic type of
episodic cartoon at the same time keeping some
sort of continuity. Very, very awesome. Number
two, Transformers Prime Season 2 was so awesome.
Oh yes it was. They amped it up so much. Oh my
god. I don't care what anybody says about Anything
that happened in season 2 it was fucking awesome
Even the even the way the clip show episode was
done where they had to go and see Fowler's superiors
needed to tell the story of it that way of storytelling
was absolutely amazing and season 2 of transformers
prime was just oh My god it knocked you on your
ass if you're a transformers fan because it was
so good Yeah, I definitely loved how they amped
it up this season. I'm waiting for season 3 2
Oh yeah, yeah, Beast Hunters is going to be quite
interesting next year. And my number one show
is a brand new show. It's only had about 9, 10,
11 episodes. Eleven. Eleven. Okay, there you
go. It's back, ladies and gentlemen, for a new
generation. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012.
With the voice talents of Jason Biggs as Leonardo,
Greg Sipes as Michelangelo, Sean Astin, yes that's
right, Rudy as Raphael, and returning as a different
turtle, Rob Paulson as Donatello. Also stars
Clancy Brown as Bradford aka Dogpound, and Kevin
Michael Richardson as Shredder. Kevin Michael
Richardson is everywhere. He was in G .I. Joe
Renegades, he's bulkhead in Transformers Prime,
he was panthro in Thundercats for as short as
that show lasted. The dude is just everywhere
and now he is Shredder in Turtles and oh my god
is his Shredder, his Shredder voice might be
the best Shredder of all time, honestly. I have
to agree. This show is just so awesome. Any other
thoughts on Turtles before I... The only thing
I don't like about Turtles? We are the Krang
and you are... I'm getting used to it. It's okay.
I'm getting used to it, but I still don't like
it. I want to know where the main Krang is. Yeah,
yeah. The thing about the Turtles cartoon is,
at first I wasn't really hip on the theme song.
I love it. I'm coming around to it and I see
the influences it kind of takes from the 87 version
Someone actually on YouTube put up the 87 version
tried to match it to the 2012 visuals It doesn't
work for me at all It just doesn't people that
do that kind of crap need to leave the stuff
alone and leave, you know The classics be the
classics. I'm sorry if people if people like
that, that's fine That's that's their opinion,
but I didn't really care for that YouTube video
but what i love about this show is it combines
traditional cgi animated style with anime style
with comic book style as it's like taking everything
from turtles history and meshing it into one
thing and it's absolutely amazing everyone needs
to watch the turtles cartoon it's so awesome
i agree yes so now let's hear some uh trailers
from what are uh Our movie list is gonna be we'll
be back after that. There's a storm coming. You
sound like you're looking forward to it. I'm
adaptable. What are you? I'm Gotham's reckoning.
Why didn't you just kill me? Your punishment
must be more severe. Do you think he's coming
back? I don't know. How'd you run, Dane? You
should be as afraid of him as I am. I won't bury
you. I've buried enough members. The Devine family.
You don't owe these people anymore. You've given
them everything. Did your mother warn me about
getting into cars with strange men? This isn't
a car. Country. England. Gun. Shot. Agent. Provocateur.
Murder. Employment. Skyfall. Skyfall. Done. activity
on earth. Flaco, you know you're not supposed
to be north of Canal Street. Who is Flaco? Just
relax, punk. You're looking for me, not you.
Crazy, right? Two grown men talking to the wall,
wall talking back. It's a mess. But hey, don't
even worry about it. Incident report. Access
denied. There's things out there you don't need
to know. That's not the lie you told me when
you recruited me. I promise you the secrets of
the universe. Nothing more. Well, what other
secrets are there? Kay! Kay! I'm looking for
Kay. Have you seen him? Sort of a surly older
gentleman. He smiles like this. Kay has been
dead for over 40 years. Jump you want me to jump
time job Okay, how do you know my name? It's
20 stories. Your doorman's intimidating. Tell
us a little bit about yourself, Mr. Parker. Not
much to tell, really. Peter lives with his aunt
and uncle. Did you catch that spider guy yet?
No, but we will. This guy wears a mask like an
outlaw. I think he's trying to do something maybe
the police can't. Can't? You know, if you're
gonna steal cars, don't dress like a car thief.
You a cop? You seriously think I'm a cop in a
skin -tie, red -and -blue suit? Who are you?
I know it's been rough for you, Peter. I forgot
all about that thing. It was your dad's. Your
father was a very secretive man, Peter. Dr. Clunters.
I'm Richard Parker's son. Your father and I were
gonna change the lives of millions, including
mine. Extraordinary. How did you come up with
this? There's a rumor of a new species in New
York. It can be a... aggressive if threatened.
I gotta stop him, because I created him. That's
not your job. Maybe it is. in a unit art. If
you want the truth, Peter, come and get it. I
am issuing an arrest warrant for the masked vigilante
known as Spider -Man. I'm in trouble. What do
we do we get ready There was an idea to bring
together a group of remarkable people So when
we need I don't play well with others. Big man
in a suit of armor. Take that away. What are
you? A genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.
I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control and
turn into an enormous green rage monster. Thanks.
Alright, we're gonna keep those film reels rolling
and we're gonna talk about our top ten movie
list for 2012. First of all, Steve or Dan, do
you guys have any honorable mentions? I do, actually.
I have a bunch, but I can just limit it to ones
that just barely missed it. Okay, so this might
surprise a lot of people That it's not my top
ten and it honestly wasn't just until a few days
ago And that's the Dark Knight rises just missed
my top ten I know that's a movie. I loved but
the more time out more times. I watch it the
more issues I have with it. I still love it,
but It's it just honestly it Last year would
easily made my top ten this year. It's just a
really strong year. So I just it just didn't
make it Beast of the southern wild is another
honorable mention moves around moves around kick.
Yeah Wow moves Ryan Kingdom and my last and Bernie
also just missed my list But honestly, it's a
been a great year for movies in my opinion. So
Steve any honorable mentions for me I'd say total
recall I'd put on my honor roll mention only
for the fact that it took an old movie and updated
it to modern times. Granted, no, did it really
need to be redone? Not really. But like a lot
of films that they keep going back and redoing,
there was a lot of 80s cheese in the old one.
Granted, you still can't replace Arnold, but
I still liked it for what it was. And then the
kind of differences that they had in some of
the film compared to the first original. But
that would be my honorable mention, because I
have the rest of them in my top 10. Awesome.
For me, I had a hard time thinking of any honorable
mentions of ones that I just barely missed my
list. And it's not because of the fact that it
missed my list. It's because of the fact that
I based my list on stuff that I saw this year.
I did not base it on stuff that I'd only seen
trailers for, unlike most people seem to think
I do. But we gotta talk about Bully because this
2012 was the year of the anti -bully campaign
and this movie was just gangbusters everywhere.
I still have yet to see it. I want to see it.
But but that was my honorable mention. Alright,
so how this is gonna work is we're going to each
go around the table So I'll do a 10 Dan will
do a 10 Steve will do a 10 etc, etc, etc and
so on until we all reach number one Dan, what
is your number 10 on your 2012 top 10 films?
Um, this is one I long we debated over I only
watched a few days ago if I'm like I caught up
to it and it's the one that not not Doc Dark
Knight rises from the ten spot and that is Django
unchanged Haven't been able to write a view of
it yet, but it was everything I would ever anticipate
for a Tantino take on Western it it was a lot
of fun like great music great dialogue Tertino
is king at individual scenes and they're some
of the best scenes of the year. I know a lot
of people haven't had the opportunity to see
it yet because it just came out, but if you're
a Tarantino fan or even a Western fan or a fan
of Blacksploitation, I would advise checking
out Django Unchained. Steve, what's your number
10? My number 10 film is That's My Boy because
every year I have to have an Adam Sandler film
in there. Let's face it. This is better than
another piece of shit that came out in 2012 Where
he played brother and sister So yeah, this is
the better of the two to begin with I was very
turned off on it on our Preview and wire show
after having seen it at home Found it to be very
funny and then they had a bunch of References
pop culture references and everything from earlier
on such as the Buds Weiser's was up and everything
else you had vanilla ice in there Basically being
vanilla ice but working at a like hot dog stand
It was all kinds of crazy. There was tons of
Saturday Night Live people and it just It was
interesting to say the least I I liked it I wouldn't
say it's the best film, but it was better than
some of the other ones that came out this year
All right, my number 10 is something that probably
no one else at least out of the three of us has
seen besides myself because no one else probably
cares One for the money Starring Catherine Heigl
Catherine Heigl. I've seen that You've really
you've seen it. Yeah, it was good You should
read the book. It's based on oh my god. You will
laugh as you read it No, I kid you not I've told
this story many times before I'm gonna tell it
again here back in 2000 2000 2001 somewhere around
there. I was at a books a million and I had just
moved to a city in Mississippi and The clerk
there the lady clerk there said, you know one
of these two franchises you might be interested
in one in her left hand was about a boy who was
supposed to become a wizard. One on her right
hand was a former lingerie buyer turned bounty
hunter. I'd take that over a fucking wizard any
day. Written by Janet Ivanovich, One for the
Money was an absolute great book. The Plum series
is still going strong with Stephanie Plum. They
just released Notorious 19, which was on my Christmas
list this year, but One for the Money, I've been
waiting for this movie for years, people. I've
been waiting for this book to be made into a
movie for years and they finally did it and they
did it so well. It's not a movie that's going
to make a lot of people's lists. It's not a movie
that a lot of people are probably going to notice,
like I said, but just seeing the book come to
life on screen is absolutely amazing. Dan, what
is your number nine? My number nine is what I
also called, for me, was the best science fiction
film of the year, and that was Looper. Ryan Johnson
directed and starring Joseph Gordon -Levitt and
Bruce Willis. It was a great take on time travel.
I love Ryan Johnson's style. great ability to
take a certain genre like noir with brick or
kind of the heist film with Brothers Bloom and
Take what's best about that genre and kind of
twist it on its head and he did that with a science
fiction and with looper some great scenes one
of the most haunting moments I've ever watched
as We see what happens when the mob tries to
get a runaway looper. It's it was frightening
of it wasn't meant It wasn't a horror film but
of all the movies I watched that scene kind of
stuck with me and I love the interplay between
Gordon Levitt and Bruce Willis There's a diner
scene where they're simply talking and it's a
great moment two great actors showing what happened
what can happen when with good writing and A
director who knows what he's doing. But yeah
looper to me one of the best movies of the year
I do want to eventually see it and it actually
comes out the day. This will air on New Year's
Eve. So nice. I'm gonna see it, too I didn't
have it on my list, but that was one I wanted
to see. Be warned, it is slower. The second half,
or I would say the second act, it does take its
time. It's kind of twitches itself on a pen really
quickly because it's really building up and things
start to kind of simmer out. I personally liked
it. I liked what they were doing, but there's
a lot of interesting interplay. What's really
great about that movie is how it says as much
about you. As a movie is like your take on it
and who you consider the villain who you considers
in the right There's really no heroes or villains.
It's just a situation and uh, that's what I loved
about it What about you steve what's your number
nine my number nine Is 21 jump street nice good
choice. Yes, I Oh stop I like the film just because
of the comedy of it and the fact that it's poking
fun at the original show because these two guys
that are training to be cops Jonah Hill and Channing
Tatum go and get themselves in trouble and then
they're like, yeah, we're bringing back a 1980s,
you know You know defunct group and Project called
21 Jump Street and then Guy screwed up to begin
with and then it was just it was interesting
to say the least and then at the very end You
get to see Spoilers for those that haven't seen
it, but you should have seen it You have Johnny
Depp and one of the other original 21 Jump Street
guys Who don't make it past the end of the film,
but I thought that was a nice touch having the
originals in the movie. Yeah, I agree with you.
I thought that didn't make my top 10, but that
was a huge surprise to me. I kind of went into
that movie with not expecting much, but I thought
it was hilarious. I thought it was Jonah Hill
and Channing Tatum, who I didn't think could
be funny was actually pretty hilarious. You said
you actually had a really great year this year
with that and Magic Mike, which I... movie I
didn't love, but I thought he was pretty good
in it. That's a definitely good pick. Those who
might have been apprehensive, not wanting to
see that because of the stigma that's with that
movie, it's actually, to me, one of the better
comedies of the year. It was one of the more
intelligent comedy movies of the year. Yeah,
it was dumb but smart comedy in a way. If you
wanted a dumb comedy, you would have watched
That's My Boy. Yeah, but if you wanted a smart
comedy, you would have watched 21 Jump Street
Yeah, there was a lot of great jokes in that
and I agree I loved how a poke fun of itself
and it realized yeah, this is You know, we're
rehashing an old You know old project that didn't
work. We're gonna do it anyways because you can't
come up with any new ideas Yeah, and then I love
the part in that film where they're trying to
blow stuff or they're thinking they're gonna
blow something up and then they ended up blowing
up a truck full of chickens Yeah, and I love
how high school has changed and what's cool back
in the 80s isn't cool now. The blogger, the tech
geek is the cool kid, not the sports jock. So
I thought that was pretty funny too, how they
kind of dissected what high school like is these
days. I assume, I have no idea, I'm not in high
school. Yeah, that kind of hit home for me. the
fact that everybody comes to me for help now,
and back in the day everybody used to make fun
of me and everything, so that really was a nice
touch for me. This is just me generalizing about
Jonah Hill. Everything I've seen a preview of
him in, it's him doing the same damn role. But
it fits him well. I would say that, but I also
say check out Moneyball, because he definitely
takes more of a straight... Role in that film.
I thought he was really good. I thought the same
thing, but he surprised me with Latin Moneyball
last year But yeah So I might make you appreciate
him a little bit more as he actually tries to
do a little bit more than be the funny fat kid
Yeah Something I just saw tonight was absolutely
amazing watching a New Year's Eve The Expendables
2 comes in at my number 9 I think Chuck Norris
might be the only thing older than Roger Moore.
He boxed a lot in that movie. He might be the
only thing that acts worse than George Lazenby.
Well, let's hope Looper isn't as slow as On Her
Majesty's Secret Service. But no, Expendables
2 is... essentially it's... Both the Expendables
movies to me are 80s action movies done today.
And Expendables 2 was just absolutely amazing.
Absolutely loved it. So awesome. What is your
number eight, Dan? My number eight is actually
a French film called Police, spelled P -O -L
-I -S -S -E. And it's a film about basically
police officers and the juvenile section. in
in france and the best way to describe it it
kind of takes stories that you would find in
an order svu episode and uses the sensibilities
of the wire and and that tone and that kind of
you know trying to do it as it is not kind of
hype it up in a way and i think that really kind
of hit me Right at the sweet spot because I loved
how it combined those a lot of great performances
in a way It's almost like watching a documentary
and how straightforward it is And it also has
a lot of great dark comedy as you see these cops
try to deal with the most horrific Situations
possible, you know child abuse neglect and things
like that and how it affects them and how they
try to get over it and It was one of the I just
kind of threw it on one day on Netflix I saw
it pop up and I absolutely loved it in So that
my number eight was police All right, Steve what
about your number eight my number eight is this
means war Just for the fact that it's like almost
like a spy versus spy kind of situation and You
have Chris Pine and Tom Hardy Captain Kirk and
Bane Going head -to -head for this one woman
who is Reese Witherspoon and I just it's it's
a Actually pretty funny action comedy And then
you've got both of them kind of they're supposed
to be doing a mission which they botched in the
beginning So they're grounded so they both get
this girlfriend that happens to be the same girl
and then they're using the CIA's computer systems
to Basically cyber stalk each other To screw
each other's plans of having sex with this girl.
So it's it's just The whole film is very fast
-paced, but it's hilarious watching the antics
that they do to each other. Awesome. Very cool,
very cool. My number eight, again, is one I just
saw as this episode releases. Safe House. I was
finally able to see this one. Wow. Between this
and flight Denzel has had an amazing year this
year And finally a movie where Ryan Reynolds
actually acts Thank God for that none of that
Green Lantern bullshit You know you give him
a lot of shit for that, but it was the writing
that was bad not him Yeah, that movie could have
could have had Denzel Washington in it and it
wouldn't have been any better Oh God, Denzel
is sinestro, I can see it now! No, it could have
been as... Who's that other Green Lantern guy?
John Stewart? Yeah, John Stewart, you could have
played him. Yeah, yeah, I can see Denzel as John
Stewart, too. You played good John Stewart. Oh,
hell yeah! Maybe that should be the next direction
for Green Lantern. Ain't that the truth? All
right. So yeah, my number eight was Safe House.
Absolutely love that movie. It's so great. It
reminds me of the old classic Denzel movies,
kind of like Ricochet and stuff like that. Absolutely
awesome. It's essentially, it could almost, Dan,
would you say it can almost be like a training
day too? If training day was. was shot by Tony
Scott. It reminds me a lot of a Tony Scott movie.
When I saw the previews for it, I couldn't believe
it wasn't shot by Tony Scott because Tony Denzel
and him have done a lot of great movies together.
But yeah, I would say it's along those lines,
like along the lines of like Man on Fire. But
yeah, I thought it was a great little action
movie that came out earlier this year. But yeah,
I agree. I enjoyed Safe House. What is your number
seven, Dan? My number seven is The Master. I
don't think there's a movie that made me more
uncomfortable in a good way than The Master this
year. Some great performances by Joaquin Phoenix,
Amy Adams, Philip Seymour Hoffman, all are some
of the best performances of the year. It's about
this cult, some people say Scientology, it's
never really stated, but it seems like it is,
but Paul Thomas Anderson has a ability to kind
of really come at you as a director and I think
he likes he Makes moments that are so eerie and
so odd and you feel awkward but it's an experience
like you don't watch his movies you experience
them and The master was one of the better movie
experiences. It's not something that you'd say.
Oh, I love that. I enjoyed it It's something
that you kind of weathered through which may
sound like a bad thing, but it's like Climbing
a tall mountain. It's it's a challenge but accomplishing
it feels you feel better about yourself at the
end So that was my number seven to the master
What about you Steve your number seven? Um, I'd
have to say the Hunger Games Would be mine. I
Did not read the books Like my wife did who happened
to read the entire series prior to the film coming
out So I was not familiar with it prior to that
other than what she'd kind of told me. She's
like, oh, you should read this blah blah blah.
And I'm like, yeah, I'm not gonna read anything.
So don't bother. And I went and saw the theater
with her and actually was very impressed of all
the things people could be watching at it, whether
it be, you know, Harry Potter, Twilight, all
that crap. I'd prefer people watch this over
those. I just like the whole war aspect of it
and the fact that you know civilization kind
of sucks Yet it's it's advanced yet. Everybody's
kind of been stomped on kind of like modern day
You know in you know this one girl and guy from
the 12th district happened to stand up and say
fuck you and Take a stand in these bullshit games,
so I'm with that, you know film taking place.
I'm looking forward to the next one which comes
out next year. So Yeah, and I'm kind of curious
because Philip Seymour Hoffman is gonna be in
the next film So that really makes me intrigued
and I agree I like the the Hunger Games what
I think I really loved about it was Jennifer
Lawrence's performance and that character It's
great to kind of see it's I named her the hero
of 2012. I'm just great to see it like an actual
female Protagonist that's not you know Fawning
over, you know a werewolf or a vampire and actually
doing something and taking charge So I oh I know
it's one of those movies where you can actually
you know it Not be ashamed if you're someone
you know is a fan of it. So yeah, yeah exactly
You know the Hunger Games pretty much is taking
the place of Harry Potter Twilight Lord of the
Rings. Twilight. Thank God is done Yeah Yes,
the best moment of 2012 Blast fever Anyway, no
the end of it. That's the fact that we never
Yeah, yeah, I wish the end of it could have come
like five years ago All right, so for me and
number seven We have Twilight meets the Avengers
in Snow White and the Huntsman because you have
Kristen Stewart's and Chris Helmsworth in this
Um, by far, in 75 years since Disney released
their Snow White version, the animated version,
uh, this is my favorite version of Snow White
ever. This is the only one that I will ever watch
ever again. More than MiraMira? Oh, shut the
fuck up. Alright, since since Dan brought MiraMira
up, uh... 2012 was the year of Snow White in
live -action because there were two Snow White
films that got released this year, Mirror Mirror
and Snow White and the Huntsman. Mirror Mirror
is the comedy version and Snow White and the
Huntsman is the more serious take. Comedy. We're
using comedy lightly there. Comedy. Well, again,
I have not seen Mirror Mirror. I'm just going
by, you know. The way it looked in the trailers.
It looked like a damn comedy to me. It looked
like it was making fun of the franchise. So Yeah
snowing the huntsman, I really really enjoyed
that Dan. What is your number six? My number
six is life of pie Ang Lee's latest film which
To me was I'm not a big fan of 3d I kind of never
understood its purpose, but there's a few films
that I think okay I can see where this could
go and Avatar was one Hugo was two and like the
pie was probably the best movie I've ever seen
in 3d just It did things. I never thought were
possible with that with that technology kind
of having things come off the screen adjusting
with aspect ratio and Just In the special effects
in general were amazing and besides just being
a technical a great technical achievement It
was a great movie with a great story and great
performances. It It's one that it it's very upfront
with what it's trying to do It's very heavy -handed,
but it's one of the better movie expanses of
the year it I don't know. It's just some Great
adventure. I love the survival aspect of it,
but it adds other layers to it with this deeper
you know religious theme and The idea of faith
and which you can some people may scoff at and
not enjoy but even if you don't like that part
of it There's a lot there to to experience. So
yeah, I'd like to buy One of the if you're gonna
see it if it's still in 3d and you're hesitant
I would say definitely check it out. You may
second guess or second Think your take on 3d
if you're not a fan Yeah, I I'm not a fan of
3d but at the same time I'm not gonna judge life
of pie without actually seeing it But I didn't
honestly I had to go on wiki and other places
to even read what the plot was because just by
the trailer I didn't understand what the hell
the movie was all about It was one of those trailers
that didn't tell me anything See, I like it when
a trailer just kind of gives you an idea of what
your current experience doesn't give the story
It was maybe too ambiguous in the fact that you
really didn't have a complete idea. What if it
what it was attempting to do, but I don't know.
I think I'd rather have a story give me not enough
than one that tells me everything. Oh no, I agree,
but at the same time I still had no clue, even
looking at it online trying to figure out what
the heck the plot was, and now that I realize,
oh hey, this is directed by Ang Lee, so this
is essentially crouching boy, hidden tiger. Which
I know that's not what Life of Pi is, but...
I have to make that joke every time I hear about
an Ang Lee film. Steve, what is your number six?
My number six is The Amazing Spider -Man. Okay.
I definitely like this film a lot better than
the Tobey Maguire trilogy. Uh -huh in its entirety.
I like the mechanical web shooters. I like the
more cocky more kind of normal functioning geeky
Peter Parker over the Underneath my desk and
my camera. I mean I still would have I mean yeah,
he still has his camera in this and everything
but uh He's not as awkward as as Toby's version
is yeah, and I think I like him better and I
like the the the suit better a little bit I like
the overall feel of this film Well beyond what
was in the other trilogy All right, my number
six is men in black three wasn't sure what to
think of this film I remember hearing all kinds
of rumors that hell hey it's getting made no
it's not Will Smith doesn't care about it anymore
what I heard all kinds of things up you know
leading up to the actual full -on production
schedule of the film and the first thing I heard
about it was hey we're time traveling and the
first thing I thought oh great this is men in
black redoing Austin Powers nice But no, Men
of Black 3 turned out to be a very, very awesome,
somewhat emotional film. And the way they told
the story was great. Josh Brolin as a young K
kind of almost imitating Tommy Lee Jones was
amazing. Pretty much you put the first film and
this film together and they are original and
sequel. The second film kind of like exists in
a mirror universe somewhere. Well, I do enjoy
the second Men in Black movie for what it is.
This film is far better. And it was very, very
awesome. All right. Dan, what is your number
five? My number five. Actually, halfway through
the year, I did my top 10 movies of the year
so far. And this was number one. Since then,
it's moved down to number five. I still love
it. It's just been that good of a year and that's
the Avengers One of the fun most fun movie experiences
I've ever had Just everything I ever wanted in
an Avengers movie. It gave me This grand experiment
that Marvel did paid off I never thought it would
ever happen and work as well as it did but having
Josh weed in there you can see his work all over
the screen his writing his ability to bring in
pulp culture and seeing all these characters
and all these personalities come into one movie
and then have some amazing action and then of
course cannot talk about the avengers without
talking about the hulk and all of his amazing
moments throughout the movie who completely stole
the show so yeah it doesn't really i don't know
there's any more i can say about the avengers
that hasn't been said but that's my number five
yeah steve number five My number five is Wreck
-It Ralph. I really like this film. It was very
well done. I love the fact that it goes from
like 8 -bit to full -on 3D images. I love the
game jumping. Just every aspect of this film
had that feel of classic gaming the nostalgia
of it plus all of the modern gaming built in
and it was just it was Interesting seeing how
well they pulled it off. I wasn't very optimistic
upon first seeing that And then when I went saw
in the theater, I thought wow, this is was really
well done Yeah, I might get flack for this but
Now that I think about it, Wreck -It Ralph is
essentially an animated version of Tron Legacy.
I love most of the films, but now that I actually
look back on it and think about it, the stories
are outside of the whole, I don't want to be
a bad guy anymore. The stories and the circumstances
are quite similar. Wait, Tron Legacy wasn't animated?
No, you're thinking I was making a joke. So yeah,
but no, I was sorry. That was a horrible attempt
at a joke. Yes. Yes, it was My number five is
the amazing spider -man Absolutely awesome unlike
Steve I do still enjoy the Tobey Maguire Trilogy
however, I think that Like Steve said Daniel
Garf Daniel Jesus Christ Andrew Garfield is Much
better as Peter Parker than Toby McGuire was
I think Toby McGuire did an amazing job when
he was quote -unquote in the suit I do hope in
future films that Sony brings back JK Simmons
for Jameson because J .K. Simmons is by far the
best live action J. Jonah Jameson we've ever
had. But no, Amazing Spider -Man was so well
done. I can't wait to see where they go next
with it. Absolutely awesome. Dan, what is your
number four? My number four is, it's not a small
film, but it's The King of Devil's Island. It
has Stellan Skarsgard, who was also in The Avengers,
and plays this kind of this ruler of, not ruler,
but He looks over this small school that During
like about the early 20th century where students
go or kids go that you get arrested and they
end up going to this island and He talks about
their story. It's a beautiful film a great story
some really up -and -coming actors it is it's
a I believe it's a Danish film. I forget the
country of origin but it's one that really surprised
me and it's one that kind of stuck with me and
it deals with a lot of important themes that
we see today like about kind of tyranny and how
who we put our trust in and how we need to kind
of How that how that can affect our youth and
how those we kind of disregard can surprise us
and it just also it's great cinematography it
you watch the movie and you just feel cold because
this island is like in the middle of Almost the
Arctic in the way just at how how foggy and how
the ice is just everywhere But that's my number
four is that the King of Devils Island? Awesome
Steve number four My number four is The Dark
Knight Returns Part One. I have that in there
because it's PG -13, it's adult. Right. Yeah.
So I really like this film. I actually had first
read the comic, the trade paperback, earlier
this year from my local comic shop. They had
it for sale for like, I think it was like six
bucks, so I bought it. And I was thoroughly impressed,
although I didn't quite care for the art and
the comic. I loved how they portrayed it in the
cartoon, the animated film. And I loved the voice
cast despite the fact that I love Kevin Conroy's
Batman. Robocop played a very good old Batman.
Yeah, Peter Weller is a good 50, 60 -year -old
Batman. Yeah. Conroy's good at the young and
the 80 -year -old Batman. Yes. But Peter Weller
did a great job. I love the fact that it's got
a lot of his rogues gallery kind of climbing
back in there, and then Batman beating the crap
out of the mutants and everything else. And I
just love the tone and the animation style, as
long as... Also the the voice cast it just it
was such a great Animation piece that I cannot
wait for part two which comes out. I believe
next month Yeah, thanks. Oh, yeah very very awesome
Right my number four is Celebrating the 50th
year of a film franchise, Skyfall. This is the
first Daniel Craig Bond film that I absolutely
loved. First out of the three of these done.
Um, it was very, very awesome. All the very different
homages. I like how Skyfall is not necessarily
a sequel to GoldenEye, but it pulls a lot of
stuff. from GoldenEye. And I really, really love
that. I love how they homage pretty much everything
in 50 years of Bond. Absolutely awesome for for
the Bond franchise in Skyfall. Dan, what is your
number three? Well, I will keep the love going
with Skyfall because it's my number three film
of the year. We went over all the Bond films
this year, and this probably was probably the
best part of it was seeing Skyfall. I like Second
everything you just said and I also just think
It had It did a great thing of combining the
Craig era with bond of old and kind of putting
them in the one film It's the first crack big
film. I think that's felt like a bond movie But
it also didn't disregard everything that Craig
did up to that point it has some amazing performances
by Daniel Craig Judy Dench and Ralph Fiennes.
Ralph Fiennes. And Harvey A. Bardem gives one
of the best performances for a James Bond villain
ever. It's also a beautiful film. Roger Deacon's
cinematography is gorgeous. It adds so much to
the action scenes. It's unlike, I think, any
action movie I've seen in recent memory. It's
the first time I feel that James Bond is ahead
of the curve. the fingerprints of things like
the Dark Knight and other franchises on it. But
I think it kind of took what was done before
and went the next step. And it's great to see
another great Bond movie. And I think Skyfall
for me is one of the best ever. Yeah. Oh, I totally
agree because of the fact that to me and I'm
not saying obviously this didn't happen if. From
2002 to 2012 if there were no Bond films and
this was Craig's debut and it was the film that
it is This would have essentially pushed the
reset button on the entire franchise with what
this film does at the end and Just it was so
amazing so awesome Silva is by far one of the
most Chilling Bond villains we've ever had yes
very much and to me he was the villain of the
year and this had like when i was going over
my movies of the awards year this just took a
lot of them and it arguably could be higher um
but and again i think my finer tool i enjoyed
a little bit more but yeah if any i think any
bond fan can appreciate skyfall even those that
maybe dismissed the craig era because they thought
it was you know unlike any other bond movie it
wasn't true to the to to the bond they know.
I think kind of Skyfall can maybe change that.
I think it changed a little bit of your opinion.
I think you can do that to other people as well.
Oh, yes. So, Steve, what is your number three?
My number three is. Men in Black three, because
in my opinion, I liked it a lot better than the
first two films I. also felt that it was more
interesting out of the out of the total of the
three films. I like the kind of going back in
time and showing what happened to Jay's dad and
why he was never in his life as far as he knew
and then going back and fighting with the young
K which Will Smith Made a comment. He says oh
you must have some city miles on you Yeah, because
he's saying I'm 29 And he's like oh you got some
city miles Which I thought was hilarious Yeah,
no like like I said before men in black 3 is
essentially a sequel to the first film Yeah,
2 is kind of non -existent I like 2 for what
it is, I like 2 for some of the comedy bits.
One of the main reasons why I like Men in Black
2 is... It's about time you guys showed up. That
lady in there is causing all kinds of hell. The
guy in the lobby of the MIB building, I like
that line. But no, 3 was just so... It was such
a heartfelt story and it was just so, so awesome.
Alright, my number 3... I saw it just before
Christmas, finally. It only took me a month and
a half to see it, but I saw Wreck -It Ralph.
Best video game movie ever, end of story. Wreck
-It Ralph does an amazing job of homaging all
the classics, games, and stuff like that, while
at the same time telling its own story. I thought
that was very, very unique, and there are even
rumors of a sequel, potentially. Can't wait to
see what happens there. Dan, what is your number
two? My number two is Argo. I remember when Ben
Affleck was nothing more than a punchline, and
he's grown into a really great director with
Gone, Maybe Gone, The Town, and Argo, which I
think is probably his best film. He's finally
done a movie outside of Boston, and he kind of
went all the way to Iran to do it during this
period piece about a really dark time in American
history. It does a great job of taking a crazy
but true story and bringing it to the breaking
screen. Some really great tension along with
some really great laughs. I loved Alan Arkin,
John Goodman. Great performances, they were hilarious,
but there was also some really edge of your seat
type of moments, like beginning sequence as you
see the... embassy being overtaken by all these
protesters and there's a really great moment
of just them in a van slowly going through this
crowd as People are touching the glass on the
cloud and the final moments of them trying to
get on the airplane but it was it was well directed
it's deserving of all the praise and If you haven't
checked it out when it comes out, it definitely
would advise it because I think it's one of those
movies that's Crowd pleaser but also deserving
of critical achievement, which we don't see much
It's a movie made for adults, which I love seeing
more of those coming out I'll have to check it
out. Um, although I do love His other films that
were done in Bob's probably because I'm originally
from that area I love seeing films done there
and done based on stuff that happened there.
The town was absolutely amazing. I'll have to
check this one out. What is your number two,
Steve? My number two is the Avengers. I was pleasantly
surprised when... saw this movie in the theater
and I happen to see it in 3d IMAX I don't typically
go for the 3d but the IMAX part that's what I
really was there for and that film I love the
the comedy with the Hulk in it I love Downey
Jr's role which he basically is the Marvel Universe
I liked how they brought everyone together in
that film, and then they had to learn how to
work as a team. They didn't just function and
say, oh, hey, here we are. But there were a lot
of nice comedy bits throughout the film that
made it really enjoyable. Like the guy playing,
what was it, Galaga in the background? Yeah.
and Tony Stark calls him out on it. He was over
there playing Galaga, which was hilarious. But
no, that whole film, between the action and the
comedy of it, it was very well done and gave
me hope other than Iron Man and Captain America
lines for the future of the Marvel Avengers universe.
Yeah. My number two... I find this so funny because...
My number two is The Dark Knight Rises. I love
the film for what it is. I do agree with Dan,
though, on multiple viewings. I'm seeing more
and more stuff that I have issues with. I'm not
saying that it takes away from my enjoyment of
the film I can watch this film and I can look
at it as you know as its own thing but it is
meant to be looked at as a period on Nolan's
trilogy and I absolutely love it for that aspect
of it but if you like sit down and are really
gonna you know analyze the hell out of it there
to a lot of Batman fans there may be a lot of
issues with it I know a lot of people love it
I know Steve loves it and I love it as well I
like that Bale spit half the gravel out that
he was using in Dark Knight and his Batman voice
in this sounded slightly better. Bane was just
absolutely amazing. Great villain. Quite possibly
one of the best Selina Kyle's we've ever gotten.
Oh yes. Hannah Hathaway. And the reason why I
say Selena Kyle is because they never actually
the entire film they never actually call her
catwoman Yes, she's wearing a cat suit. Yes.
She's wearing kind of like Cat ears headgear,
but they never actually call her catwoman. So
love that Love the action. I don't give a shit
if people have a problem with the bat I thought
it was cool, I thought it was a nice way to bring
in a flying vehicle into the real world Batman.
I thought that was pretty cool. But yeah, that's
my number two The Dark Knight Rises. Dan, what
is your number one film of 2012? My number one
film was one that it stayed with me for a very
long time. It's not one that I think while watching
it I necessarily was in love with it, but it...
As the more I thought about it and it's one it's
kind of like You know There's something that
sticks with you and you can't get it out your
head and the more more you think about it the
more more We love it. And that was once upon
a time in Anatolia It's a Turkish film about
basically it's a simple story About this guy
who killed someone and these cops are trying
to find the body He did it when he was drunk.
He doesn't remember. So they're going all around
this barren landscape trying to find the body
and where the story lies is just in these conversations
with between this doctor and these police officers
and they get in these really deep just a lot
um solutions regarding truth and the effect of
truth and how knowing the absolute truth can
be benefit you but also can bring absolute it
these are just side conversations that you kind
of dismiss or you easily could dismiss but as
the story kind of plays out you see how they
affect each other and It's also a beautiful film.
They're similar photography that takes like amazingly
landscapes and Makes it look great. It's like
things like Grand Canyon or you know melt our
gorgeous mountains. This takes its most barren
desert plain looking Lance And it's just breathtaking
and how every shot is framed just these short
moments and how someone just told just the camera
It's just something I appreciate it But yeah,
it's it's a very long movie. It's about three
hours. It feels like five hours It's it makes
it there's very little dialogue. It's it's a
it's a track to get through but Honestly, when
I came back of all my movie experiences this
year the movie that really stuck with me the
one I kept going back again and again that most
affected me was this movie. I know it's probably
not a movie for everyone, but when it came down
to it, it was my number one. Steve, what is your
number one film of 2012? Like I didn't already
know. Well, it most certainly isn't The Dark
Knight Rises. Oh, it is. Yes, The Dark Knight
Rises. That would be my number one film of the
year. It was kind of a tough tie between Avengers
and that, but because of my greater love of all
things Batman, it won out for that reason alone.
I really, really, really enjoy this film. Even
with subsequent viewings, I still... I really
like this film. I did see a lot of the holes
in it as I watched it. I still don't care. It
still was a good film and it still wrapped up
the Nolan verse. A couple of my pet peeves are,
yes, despite the fact Bruce Wayne did get away
because everything was fixed and everything was,
you know, as it should have been. How the hell
did he get away when he's still in the cockpit
when there's like eight seconds left and then
all of a sudden boom For the Duke that that was
one thing and then the other thing Bane's voice
Was incredibly difficult to understand it at
certain points in the film To the point it was
annoying while I was seeing it in the theater
Yeah Think it's better on the D. It's it's better
on it's way better on the blu -ray I Have to
say but it was terrible on the film trying to
understand what the hell he was trying to say
Well, at least he wasn't going around saying
bomb or worse saying how would you like to freeze?
And I think what's better watching it on blu
-ray 2 it's not as jarring like I don't have
surround sound so just how it like Because they
put it in front of everything and the theater
is more noticeable But at home, it's I think
it that transition wasn't as like you didn't
notice it as much But I never had an issue understanding
it, but it was kind of just it just sounded odd
But I think after a while I got used to it Yeah
All right, and my number one film for 2012 Avengers
Assemble! The reason why I put Dark Knight Rises
at number two and Avengers at number one is because
while I enjoyed Dark Knight Rises, it was the
end of Nolan's trilogy. Whereas Avengers is almost
a bridge to more Marvel movies because they took
the last five films that they had done under
Marvel Studios and brought them together in this
one gigantic film. Everyone bitches and complains
about, oh, why did Coulson have to die? Think
of it this way. If you're a Joss Whedon fan at
all, you know he kills one major character that
everyone loves in everything he has ever done.
The most standout one to me would be Fred from
Angel in season five. Well, the thing about Coulson
is he'll be back in the... Yeah, I don't TV show
and there's rumors. He'll be back in Avengers
2 Well, and that's fine if they want to bring
him back in the movies. I'm I I Have no interest
in the TV show at this point. They bring him
back into film that it's candid Well, I and I'll
accept that if they bring him back in the film
for the TV show I have not seen anything about
it. I haven't even read up on it. So I'm not
It's just none of my radar at this point The
Avengers was awesome. There's so many awesome
lines in it Seeing all these heroes seeing a
Hulk that actually can work Finally after three
friggin films is amazing and three different
actors, you know over there at the stupid Canadian
sisters network of ours this week in geek they
they heckled me and heckled me for months when
I would bring up stories of Mark Ruffalo being
Bruce Banner the Hulk in Avengers and he is by
far the best Banner slash Hulk we've ever had.
Absolutely love it. I can't wait to see what
Marvel does in the future with Avengers 2 and
Captain America 2 and all that other good stuff.
Iron Man 3 comes out next year. Looking forward
to that. uh... so you know folks that's our our
top ten movies of twenty twelve i'm sure optimist
solo will have his own top list of twenty twelve
blog for the site so next up we have our favorite
moments or moment of the year for me pretty much
there's only two and their t .v. related uh...
season two of revenge premiered in season three
of the voice premiered You know, I could you
know, we just talked about all the movies and
I could mention some of those as far as Anything
else. I honestly can't think of anything else
that really intrigued me this year What about
you, Dan? Any favorite moments of the year? Well,
being a New York Giants fan, my year started
off pretty well with them winning the Super Bowl.
So that was a great way to begin my sports here.
Unfortunately, this season hasn't fared so well.
But that was a big moment for me watching them
win that. Another one was just the election being
over. It got to the point where... I didn't care
who won. I just wanted the commercials to be
off the television and not have to deal with
all the hubbub of the election. So that was great.
Just that was finally done and over with. Other
moments of the year and seeing honestly, I think
the Avengers goes down as one of the biggest
moments just because it was. It wasn't a movie.
It was a moment. Just what it did box office
-wise, how it set records and made over a billion
dollars. To me, if you're going to pick it one
moment of the year for movies, it would be The
Avengers and everything that it accomplished.
Steve, what about you? Any favorite moments of
the year? My son being born. Yay. Yes, that would
sum up my... Number one favorite time of the
year, so Yes, that's right, we're gonna be talking
about some epic fails the Mayans enough said
You know, like Dan said with his favorite moment
of the election just being over, I always hate
election years. And I know this is, you know,
the whole election coverage is tied into, oh,
which network wants it or which network is going
to pay the most for it to have the coverage as
far as the TV stations. I honestly wish there
was a television channel on cable somewhere or
even on broadcast TV that was just political
crap. That way it could stay off of all the major
friggin networks, off all the damn cable networks.
Honestly the closest election coverage this year
I watched was Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
That's it. I hate politics. I did vote. Sadly
I voted for the lesser of two evils. I almost
wish Hillary was in the running this year, but
anyway Yeah, the election for me is just no What
about you Dan any epic fails for 2012? Well on
the movie front, I think probably the biggest
epic fail this year was a movie I loved but John
Carter because it was It was it failed on so
many different levels Just calling, you know
changing it from John Carter from Mars to just
John Carter how it lost so much money It was
one of the biggest flops of all time It just
it just set up to be a huge franchise and just
was dead on arrival And again, I think it's a
decent movie I just think it was just pissed
for management and Horrific marketing made people
just not interested in that movie and also on
the movie front While I understand why they would
put it back in your squad because of what happened
in Colorado I just I don't agree with that. I'm
changing or reshooting scenes I think I have
no issue with him like saying okay, then pushing
it to January. That's fine But I just don't like
the idea of like changing someone's vision or
changing a story because of us You know an event
because I think that could go down What story
changed? They're retaking they're taking out
scenes. There was there's moments where you know
scenes out of what gangster squad Oh, okay gangster
squad. Okay. Yeah there I mean there was a there
was a scene where you which I understand why
they're taking it out, but I think it's it's
a tightrope to walk because to me like art and
entertainment or they're separate from real life
and I think I don't know to me like you had things
like Dr. Strangelove came out right around the
time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. They didn't
change it, they pushed it back, but they kept
what was there intact. I think it's fine to push
it back to we're not affected by it, but I just
think it's kind of a wrong message to send to
saying, okay, it's kind of admitting guilt when
I don't think they should have to. Steve, any
epic fails of the year? Hearing too much about
politics and all this other various crap that
you know I mean obviously besides the Mayan BS
which now they're concluding that it's gonna
happen in the first quarter next year but you
know whatever that that would pretty much sum
it up that the whole presidential election and
in politics crap surrounding it then the the
the fake Mayans thing that Somehow, you know,
oh we miscalculated No, actually with leap year
probably would have been six months ago. So you
guys are you know, right on the money ball there
jackasses All right, so now it is time to talk
about the GCR in in 2013 Talk about announcements
and new stuff coming up We're going to be doing
a whole bunch of new blogs. Obviously, Dan will
have many, many, many movies to blog about. We've
got several new blog things that have kind of
launched here in 2012, but will continue in 2013.
I launched something called Trailer Talk, where
if there's a trailer that we want to write a
blog about, just first impressions, and if we're
going to go see that movie or whatever else,
so there's Trailer Talk. I did it with... Despicable
Me 2 and Iron Man 3, which are two movies I'm
absolutely looking forward to next year. And
then later, I don't, I think it's sometime in
March that Dread comes out. I forget. Whenever
Dread releases to home media, I will be launching
a blog called Disc. Versus disc that's right
DVD disc versus disc and I will be comparing
and contrasting the original Stallone Judge Dredd
with the new Carl Urban Judge Dredd This blog
post is not just my thing it can anyone can use
it Anyone that any one of our staff can use it
as far as if there's Steve I know you you know
you mentioned in in your Earlier in the show
about total recall if you wanted to do a comparison
with that I'm not saying you will do it I'm just
saying like any film that has a remake from the
original version like Robocop like total recall
like Judge Dredd That kind of stuff that's what
disc versus disc is all about that's what that
blogs all about is taking an original film and
Comparing it to a newer version like something
like oceans 11 or the Italian job or something
like that What other blogs are you going to be,
besides your regular reviews, Dan, what other
blogs are you going to be doing in 2013? Well,
I think one thing about a movie critic is understanding
their personal taste on films. I think if you
read my reviews and listen to episodes of M .Y
.R. that I've been onto, you kind of get a good
idea. But to give you a better idea, what I'll
be doing is I'm going to do my top 100 favorite
films. These are my favorite films. These are
not what I consider the greatest films, just
so people can see. what I personally like. Hopefully
you can maybe it'll a few films that you may
have never heard of you'll take a look at or
just that way you know you can understand where
I'm coming from as a movie fan because I think
that's really important when you're reading a
review is understanding that what type of movie
review you are because you know everything's
subjective films are subjective. There's something
I may love and other people may hate, and it's
not because that movie is good or bad, it's just
because it affects us in different ways. So that's
kind of the method to that madness. And I have
a few other ideas. I think I might be doing some
director retrospectives where I pick out a director
and look into their photography picking out.
Going film a film and kind of dissecting their
careers And I have a few ideas of who I might
do that with and I think I'm probably gonna start
with John Carpenter Just because he has such
a huge filmography with different films and he's
such a great geek Centric type of director with
great movies and some of that I need to catch
up on I really am slacking when it comes to his
his movie. So I think it was something that People
can follow along with and experience with me
as I go through all his movies just in different
blog posts So that'll be coming this year Along
with you my normal reviews and I'm sure I'll
come up with different ideas as I As a year goes
on but that's what I'm currently planning on
Awesome. Awesome Steve, even though you're gonna
be scarce in 2013. What do you got coming up?
Um, I'm planning on doing some more I'm planning
on doing some more blogs at some point. I'm also
planning on... I'm gonna be doing more Altered
Geeks, of course. I'm gonna try and do some other
video -related shows because that'll be easier
to do a couple five -minute shows here or there.
I'm hoping to be able to get into some of my
podcasts again at some point. But it just kind
of, like I said, depends on the time. Right.
For me, obviously Optimus Solo and I will be
continuing on with Tales of Eternity, the first
of four Masters of the Universe podcasts in Powers
of Grayskull series. We will finish out Mass
Mayhem at some point during 2013. Tooncast Beyond
Season 2 will finish hopefully by March 2013.
um i think january probably january through march
or somewhere about there uh mwire movie we can
review episodes 90 to 99 will be recorded by
the end of march uh mwire will go on a break
until steve is ready to start the star trek spotlight
that we'll be doing over the summer and let's
see what else um oh yeah June 21st, 2013, TV's
Mr. Neil will be joining the GCRN for Pixels
in the Animation. We are going to be reviewing
nine video game cartoons in one podcast. We're
going to go through each cartoon individually
as a normal review series, but instead of reviewing
nine, having nine separate podcasts for these
things, we're going to be doing nine cartoons
in one show. Super Mario Brothers Super Show,
Legend of Zelda, Captain and the Game Masters,
Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, New Adventures
of Super Mario World, Mega Man, Sonic, Donkey
Kong Country, and that's pretty much it. So that'll
be launching in June this year. That's pretty
much the only new podcast. Yeah, I think so.
That's pretty much the only new podcast we're
going to launch in 2013 because we've got so
much stuff that launched in 2012 that we're still...
That Power of the Grayskull series, Kevin and
I are going to be at that for a couple of years
because that's four separate podcasts, four separate
cartoons, so that'll be ongoing very, very much.
The main focus for 2013 people is GCR, GCR and
Wars, and movie we can review as far as the flagship
shows. For geek cast radio the podcast we're
gonna have We're gonna start doing our our versions
of an AFI type of list like top ten spy movies
top ten action movies that kind of thing Kind
of in the same format as what you heard us do
in this episode with them with the top ten movies
So we'll be doing that GCR wars We've got some
sort of tournament thing that we're gonna be
doing though that we'll have more information
on soon next year uh... so it's going to be a
big year for us we're just kind of we're not
necessarily launching so many new things but
we're focusing on what we've currently got on
our plates and i do want to finish out toy cast
uh... episodes ninety nine ninety eight ninety
nine hundred so that'll be that And now that
show will officially retire. I do want to bring
in another toy centric podcast to kind of replace
it I gotta talk to the people about that. So
we need to have a meeting on that eventually
off -air But 2013 bigger and better we're gonna
be getting more and more interviews for 2013
I've got a lot of people I want to talk to I
should also mention, before I forget, from the
Command Center, our Power Rangers podcast that
is a crossover between us and Pop Culture Network
with Scotty Cash, we will be doing the RPM and
Samurai episodes. After that, from the Command
Center is going to go on hiatus because we're
going to go all the way back to the beginning
and Scotty and I are going to start recording
commentary episodes, which we're going to essentially
start all over and go more in depth rather than
an overview. of of the series we're going to
talk about episodes from Mighty Morphin every
Power Rangers series we're going back to the
beginning so after we finish the Samurai episode
we're going to go commentary style for 2013 Command
Center probably won't come back until maybe September
or October of 2013 we will release um RPM and
Samurai in January and February After February
from the command center is going on hiatus for
the year. So there's that Anything else we need
to bring up Steve for the 2013 stuff? I don't
think so. All right Very very awesome. It is
now break time. You're gonna hear two clips one
from the What's on Megatron's mine crew. I'm
sorry. What's on Joe mine's crew? About their
top three and bottom three moments in Joe history
from 2012 uh... that nine month pregnancy notwithstanding
uh... then you're here some pop culture stuff
from the star jose crew and we'll be back to
close the show after this we brought the entire
convention center to the brink of an inter -genre
geek war today's podcast is brought to you by

Welcome to this GCRN Gear Review Special Edition
of What's On Your Mind. If you've never heard
of us, well, first of all, shame on you for not
listening to the GCRN's number one show. I am
one of your co -hosts. Gary, joining me as always
is our showrunner and GCR legend in his own mind,
the Chuck Dog. Chuck, Chuck, how are you? I'm
doing alright, Gary. How are you? Fantastic.
He is new for 2012, but that new car smell has
worn off. It's Beachhead Mike. Mike, how are
you? Smelly as ever. I've never had a new car
that smelled like mine. Thank God. I thought
we were trying to keep this quick. Sorry. He
is the Ayatollah Trollmany of GeneralJose .com
and General Hawk Justin. What's happening? Just
go with Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla. That works
too. Yeah, the Ayatollah Trollmany. Alright,
well done. We have been asked by TFGI Mike...
to put together a top three and bottom three
list of the events of Joe from the past year.
And then we have to fit that all within 10 minutes.
But anyways, we have put our list together and
here's what we come up with. Starting at the
bottom, number three. Black luster movie toys.
Well, yeah black luster might seem a little harsh
because these were some really solid figures
It's just that with the limited articulation
and not as Detailed paint schemes a lot of these
first wave retaliation figures which were on
shelves before the movie pale in comparison to
Cobra and 30th anniversary renegades figures
But as I said, they are some solid figures and
you should look into them And as it looked like
the later waves fellas looks like they are considerably
better than early waves, right? Oh definitely,
yeah. A lot of the first wave stuff was kind
of in progress before they really had all the
final designs and everything for the film, so
they're still kind of flying at the seat of their
pants a little bit. Still some neat character
design in that first wave, they just didn't quite
execute. Number two on our bottom three... It
was a challenging year for the GI Joe Collectors
Club, wasn't it Justin? Yeah, it was a little
bit. They are coming out pretty much on top.
They're ending 2012 on a high note with the release
of the figure subscription service, the first
wave of that. But yeah, they had a little bit
of a rough year. They had some issues with their
software security system where some credit card
information got leaked, which was unfortunate.
They built their convention this year kind of
a lot around a retaliation screening that of
course then couldn't happen because the movie
got delayed. To add to that, they had some little
hotel snafus and they actually had to cancel
their hotel plans or their hotel canceled the
plans on them and they had to delay the convention
and reschedule much to the chagrin of many GI
Joe fans out in the community. The release of
the FSS. preview pictures was met with some mixed
response. Some people concerned with the character
selection, some people concerned with the artwork.
It's just been kind of an up and down rocky road
for the club. They had challenges getting their
store online. They didn't really have any product
to sell. It's been rough for them this year,
but things like I said, they're looking up at
the end of 2012 with the FSS hitting mailboxes
as we speak and hopefully kicking off 2013 with
the rest of the FSS and some really exciting
news for JoCon 2013. And number one on the bottom
three to Absolut - no one's surprise. G .I. Joe
retaliation gets delayed. We'll set it around
the horn, fellas. Yeah, it's tough to really
put into words exactly kind of what that news
meant to a G .I. Joe fan. Us G .I. Joe fans are
kind of used to getting kicked in the gut a little
bit over the past several years. We've always
kind of been second fiddle. Over and over and
over again. Yeah, it feels like we're kind of
the redheaded stepchild in some cases. And when
you hear of a movie year and a movie coming out,
you think, finally, oh, this one's going to be
our year. Hasbro's putting all their focus on
us. Hollywood's doing some good things for us.
this will be the year that we actually get the
attention we deserve and slam on those brakes
not so fast. Not only did the movie get delayed
but there's all these rumors about why it got
delayed about whether it's Channing Tatum or
about whether it's a conversion to 3D whether
screenings were terrible. For a movie year it
wasn't a very fun year and that was a pretty
big bummer for us GI Joe fans. I know it took
the wind out of a lot of people's sails and that's
just unfortunate. Just one bit of resolve and
just got to dig in and look towards the future.
Yeah, can't add too much to what these guys have
said without just completely blowing our time
limit sky high. We've seen the tough part of
the storm at least. We've been through the bulk
of that time and get through Christmas and before
you know it, it'll be the end of March and there
we go. It was certainly a surreal day back when
that happened. I mean it happened so quick. Yes.
Out of the blue, one day. We're recording a podcast
and pretending the movie and the con are 30 days
away and the next day, done. Yeah, I was in a
meeting. It was kind of funny without blowing
our time when we were totally out of the water.
I was in a meeting for work and throughout the
entire meeting, my phone was like, I'm like,
what the heck is going on? Trying not to be too
obvious about checking my phone. And I finally
got to the desk and fired things up and I'm hammered
with like 18 different tweets about what is going
on? What is this? And it was just a crazy, crazy
day. It was bizarre that we were finding out
about that news the same time as most of the
people at Hasbro. Yeah, it certainly seemed that
way. Here's our top three list. Number three,
fan initiatives of 2012. helped keep brand optimism
high. Yeah, it was a great year for fan -driven
shows. We, of course, had the long -standing
shows in Canada and Atlanta with Joe Lana. Coil
Con rolled into its third year with some well
-received exclusive. New Jersey Collector's Convention
really hit big with that metalhead figure that
they had. Iowa really got things going with Assembly
Required in its second year. Roll Out Roll Call
over in England rolled into its third year and
had those great snake exclusives. There was all
kinds of great fan product out on the market.
It seems like collector groups regionally and
nationally really in what wasn't the greatest
attended convention for the big con. These regional
shows really picked up the slack and met the
needs of a lot of Joe fans out there in various
communities. Props to everybody. Number two,
Dollar General Joe's keep the brand alive for
2012. We've already talked about the movie line
having lackluster sales and feedback. The opposite
was the Dollar General Joe's, the basic assortment
line, six figures. pretty much using existing
tooling and stuff that's already out there, and
they hit a home run solidly with four of these,
and the other two are kinda eh, but they still
are pretty good figures. They come with a figure
stand, which the mainline figures don't come
with. Basic stuff to get the kids interested.
Well, I don't know about getting kids interested,
but definitely the collectors were interested
to the point that there was frenzies about not
being able to find these things for the longest
time. Now I believe supply has met up with demand,
and there's going to be a running change to these
particular figures. and looks like that will
be hitting sometime in 2013, but the dollar general
Joe's, as a lot of people call them, or the basic
assortment figures, as they're really called
by Hasbro, truly saved the year for collectors
in 2012. And the number one Joe news item for
2012? Well, we're gonna swerve in here. It was
a movie! Yeah, I mean we kind of have to put
that at the top and at the bottom because I got
to admit for the first four or five months that
movie talk was going strong. It was a hell of
a ride. Yeah, it was really great. kind of beginning
of the year to be a GI Joe fan, we had John Shue,
the director of the movie, pretty active on Twitter,
talking back and forth with all the fans, talking
back and forth with us on the podcast. And it
was a really great immersive environment, a lot
of fun, a lot of updates. It seems like every
week there is new updates, new trailers, new
posters, new information, just all sorts of cool
stuff leading up to the film. I just think it's
a big story. I mean, whether or not the delay
was a negative for us, it's also a big news story.
So you can't argue that it shouldn't belong in
both places. So I think the movie and it was
all -encompassing for 2012. First, it was the
excitement leading up to the movie, and then
it was the movie delay, and then it was declaring
lack of a movie. Whatever the end result was,
it consumed all of 2012. It's the biggest G .I.
Joe story by far. All you can say is, whenever
something has to be delayed to make it better,
it's a good thing. We'll see. You know, it's
one of those where they delayed the movie and
they promised us much bigger stuff and much...
Better stuff is going to be going in there. Proof
is in the pudding. Fans are going to be expecting
a better movie as a result. So I hope they can
follow through on the promise and now the increased
promise after the delay that this is truly one
of the big movie events of 2013. Fingers are
crossed. I really want it to be successful. I
would agree with that. I mean, G .I. Joe fans
especially live and die by our toys. And if a
successful movie, whether or not it thrills us,
if a successful movie brings more toys to the
aisle, more good toys to the aisle, then I can
live with being disappointed for two hours in
order to have... a couple of years with a decent
twist. Well, it was a hell of a run. It's always
a good time getting to the store, finding new
product. It was always great to hear those trailers
on TV and see them. I enjoyed the buildup and
we get to go through it again and hopefully it's
better and it pays off. Yeah. 2013 for the first
half of the year should be fantastic. So let's
go. Moving on. I think that's all we got. I think
we're coming up on 10 minutes. We don't want
to make Lee Mike River's name is. We want to
make lunch it angry. So for our show winner Chuck
goes Justin and Mike. I'm Gary, sending all our
men and women serving. God bless, God speed,
and come home safe. Thanks to all of our guests,
our generous sponsors, and to all of our friends
who made 2012 happen. Thank you for another great
year. Good night, folks, and thanks for listening.
We'll catch you next year in the next episode
of What's on Jill Mine? Happy holidays. Happy
holidays. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
A blank sign for all... and this is Ryan from
the Star Joe's podcast. Unfortunately, today
Chuck couldn't be with me, but we wanted to make
sure that we got in front of you guys and let
you know all the great geeky news that came out
in 2012. So when it comes to movies, there was
never a year in the past like there was for 2012
when it came to the geekiest movies, the best
movies that could be out there for us. So obviously
the biggest one that was out there was Marvel's
The Avengers. almost at a billion and a half
grossing sales is ranked right now at the number
three of all time sales when it comes to movies.
So just an amazing, amazing movie. I'm sure all
of you have seen it once, if not multiple times
by now, especially with it being out on DVD and
Blu -ray. Closely following that was actually
The Dark Knight Rises, which was the third movie
in the Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan. And
that's actually number seven of all time now
with over a billion dollars in sales. For those
Bond fans out there, Skyfall just recently came
out, and believe it or not, Skyfall is already
number 14 of all time grossing movies. And I
can imagine it's just gonna go up from there.
It's almost made a billion dollars worldwide.
Also, this year, not only did we have Avengers,
not only did we have Batman, we also had Amazing
Spider -Man, a brand new take on the classic
character that is sure to have at least a trilogy
of movies in total when it's done. But that one
has actually come in at number 46 of all -time
grossing movies, which is actually pretty amazing
when you think about it, no pun intended there.
The Hobbit, which actually just came out just
within the last several weeks, this has actually
already made $244 million worldwide. I don't
believe it's actually even hit every country
yet, so... And then last but not least, number
19 in 2012 was the movie Prometheus, which was
the precursor to the Alien movies done by Ridley
Scott. And this made only 126 million, I know
that sounds like still a lot of money, and it
is, but it only made 126 million in the U .S.,
which really would not have been a success for
it because the budget for it was about 130 million.
But when you look at it worldwide, it made over
$400 million. So is there a chance we'll see
another one? Possibly. I don't know. Certainly
keep our fingers crossed on that. Would love
to see another movie come out. When it comes
to comics, big year for comics. We had Marvel
Now. And Marvel Now was pretty much, even though
they won't say it, was Marvel's response to the
DC relaunch. What Marvel did was starting in
October of 2012, so just a few months ago, They
decided they were going to reboot a lot of their
titles back to number one and come out with some
other new titles. Move around some creators.
We had Brian Michael Bendis who was known for
his run on Avengers titles move over to the X
-Men now and he's going to actually be... not
only is he working on all new X -Men, but he's
also gonna be working on the new Uncanny X -Men
that's gonna be coming out very soon. That started
in October, and what we have seen so far is at
least one, if not multiple, number one titles
coming out every single week from Marvel. So
several, several titles, and this started with
the title Uncanny Avengers. Now tied into all
this, what we're about to see come out very soon
in 2013, is Superior Spider -Man number one,
which actually takes place after the events of
Amazing Spider -Man number 700. Now this just
came out this week, so I don't want to spoil
what happens in it for you, but I will say if
you want to have any idea of what's happening
in the world of Spider -Man, number 700 is the
issue you need to get. In fact, I would recommend
getting issues 698, 699, and 700 to get the full
story of what's happening and who is Superior
Spider -Man. Also this year, we saw The Walking
Dead reach its 100th issue. Obviously a huge
successful title, but also a huge successful
TV show. It's in its third season now, and it's
been doing nothing but going up to being viewers.
But when it comes to the comic book itself, it's
already up to issue 100 with no end in sight,
so just a great milestone for independent comic
out there. Speaking of independent comics...
For those bronies out there, we had My Little
Pony, presented by IDW, came out in November.
It sold over 80 ,000 copies for number one. For
an independent comic, a property comic, cannot
say enough great things about it. Also, when
it comes to independent comics, we saw Saga,
Brian K. Vaughn, and Fiona Staples. It went into
its fifth printing and it sold over 70 ,000 copies.
Absolutely incredible. It's an amazing space
story. Highly recommend checking it out. When
it comes to toys this year, we had Maddie Collector
come out with their pre -orders for the Castle
Grayskull Playset. Playsets, I believe, were
a thing of the past, but not so. Maddie has come
out and has taken pre -orders for the Castle
Grayskull Playset, which is going to be massive.
And it comes out next December, but you can put
your pre -orders in now for it. Speaking of playsets...
They weren't the only ones doing that. We also
saw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle playset.
This huge, like, three -foot tall playset with
a sewer playset with a street scene. Perfect
toy with a hot item this Christmas. You can also,
if you're on the higher end of things, we also
have pre -orders come out this year for the Masterpiece
Soundwave and Sideswipe for Transformers. That's
right, the Masterpiece was able to get their
licensing for the Lamborghini so they could actually...
do the size white figure and I'm sure we're going
to see Sunstreaker come out pretty soon shortly
after that. Also sideshow when it comes to GI
Joes they came out with the pre -orders for Baroness
and Major Blood this year so those you can expect
to come out next year but the pre -orders are
out there now so you want to make sure you get
those they're absolutely amazing reveals that
were shown this year. I don't think there was
anything bigger than Star Wars and Lucasfilm
being purchased by Disney. And this is probably
why we were asked at Star Joe's to give the news
of 2012. There was no news bigger than this.
Absolutely floored everyone out there. People
of course thought Lucas would never let go of
the reins of Star Wars or Lucasfilm, but he did.
And in my opinion, and I know in Chuck's opinion,
this could not have been a better thing that
happened. What we are going to see with the announcements
that have been made so far is... We are gonna
get a new movie. It might not even be every year,
but at least once every couple years. And they're
starting with the sequels. So we're gonna get
episodes 7, 8, and 9. We've already heard that
Mark Hamill is interested, Carrie Fisher is interested,
and we've even heard Harrison Ford is interested.
We've also heard that Darth Vader might make
a new appearance in these sequels. And I know
you're probably thinking, how could that happen?
He died. Well... There's things you can always
think of. There's clones in Star Wars. This can
be used as a shock effect to throw Luke Skywalker
off. We also have Luke has touched the dark side
at some point, so maybe he takes on the mantle
of the name Darth Vader. Who knows? But it's
going to be absolutely amazing. We have right
now, like I said, Disney just purchased Lucasfilm.
It finally went through on December 21st of this
year. So even though the news came out months
ago... The final purchase went through this past
21st of December, and it sold for $4 .06 billion.
We have, working on the first sequel, writer
Michael Arnt, who was known for his writing on
Toy Story 3, which was actually, probably in
my opinion, the best Toy Story of all three.
So we have a good, solid writer on that. Lucas
is still involved as a consultant. He's not going
to have his hands in it. directly, but he is
going to be there as a consultant, someone they
can turn to if they have any questions or some
advice or anything like that. When the sequels
are done, we're going to get some spinoff movies,
spinoff stories, maybe we'll get a Boba Fett
story, maybe we'll get Origin of Yoda, maybe
we'll get a Rogue Squadron movie. Who knows?
The possibilities are absolutely endless. What
this also means for comics is, as you may know,
Disney also owns Marvel Comics. And what is going
to happen is we're going to see Dark Horse when
their license is over with Lucasfilm for doing
the comics. License will then go to Marvel and
Marvel will start doing comics. And they've already
announced that the licensing is going to end
in the upcoming year. And Marvel Comics, you
might see them doing Star Wars comics as soon
as about early 2015. So we might go about a year
or less without seeing any Star Wars comics.
Then it's like gangbusters and I'm sure Marvel's
going to put out a lot of Star Wars titles and
I for one am looking forward to it big year for
movies big year for comics big year for toys
and Huge year when it came to the Star Wars franchise
and I can only imagine that that's going to cause
Huge movie toy and comic news for the future
So if you want to check us out, it's starjoes
.com Please check out the show. We're not for
the kids to be listening to, but if you love
any of the 80s properties out there or into the
comics that are out there for G .I. Joe's Star
Wars, Transformers, Voltron, Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles, or any other 80s property out there,
you definitely want to check out Star Joe's.
I want to thank GCRN for having us on this episode.
I want to thank them for their support throughout
the year of 2012. and I look forward to their
continued partnership and community in 2013.
Take care everyone. As it wasn't mentioned in
the transition into this ad break with the segments
from the other parts of the GCRN, here now is
JT from Saskatoon with comics. Hey guys, JT from
Saskatoon here. Being that I read more comics
than is medically recommended by four out of
five parents, it falls to me to discuss some
of the bigger comic stories and news from the
year. So in order to avoid boring you with all
the minutiae of comicdom, I'm going to talk about
three of the biggest events that happened in
and around comics this year. And yes, I am going
to discuss DC's new 52 somewhat. I promise to
keep the swearing and death threats towards Dan
to Dio to minimum. Maybe. I make no guarantees.
One of the Marvel Comics' biggest stories in
2012, and probably the hardest to miss, was Avengers
vs. X -Men, a 70 -plus issue company -wide crossover,
also known as AVX. The crossover saw the universally
powerful Phoenix Force making its way back to
Earth, the implications of its return bringing
the Avengers and the X -Men to blows over how
it should be handled. Mutant leader Cyclops believes
the Phoenix return will resurrect the mutant
race, while Captain America and the Avengers
think it's going to lay a lease to the world.
Hero fights hero across the world and into outer
space before the phoenix arrives, and when the
Avengers' giant man and the beast attempt to
use the device to disperse the phoenix, it's
split into five pieces that inhabit Cyclops,
Emma Frost, Namor the Submariner, Colossus, and
his sister, Magic. The so -called Phoenix -5
then makes sweeping, miraculous changes to the
world, while the Avengers are driven into hiding
after the Phoenix -5 demand that the world submit
to their rule. However, it's not long before
the story starts making like Highlander, as each
member of the begin to fall and their powers
split among the survivors. Eventually, before
you can say there can be only one, Cyclops absorbs
all of the Phoenix Force and becomes Dark Phoenix.
And in a last -ditch effort, Professor X, the
Scarlet Witch, and the mutant messiah known as
Hope team up to take down Cyclops before he ruins
everyone's day. The Marvel Universe is irrevocably
changed by the events of this, at least until
the next crossover. Mutants begin appearing all
over the world again, Cyclops and majority of
his supporters are either in jail or on the run,
and the Avengers are recreated yet again, this
time adding some well -known mutant faces such
as Havoc and Cannonball to the roster. The crossover
drew some criticism from fans, but was an overall
successful storyline. The ending of the series,
which resulted in the surprise death of a longtime
X -Men cast member, and Cyclops becoming a fugitive
mutant freedom fighter, finally moved the X -Men
comics forward from the species on the verge
of extinction place that they had been since
2005's House of M event. AVX also resurrected
the classic Marvel 2 -in -1 team up -titled in
the new A plus X series, rebooted the uncanny
X -Men yet again, and set up a hero and mutant
status quo in the new uncanny Avengers comic,
which also sees the Red Skull do some interesting
things to himself in order to screw with the
team. Seriously, just read the first issue and
you'll know what I'm talking about. Most regular
comics fans may have read or at least heard of
the Valiant Comics universe from back in the
late 80s and early 90s. Valiant boasted many
diverse titles. Some featured reconceived gold
key comic characters like Magnus Robot Fighter
and Turok Son of Stone. They also had original
concepts like the voodoo -influenced Shadow Man,
the sci -fi barbarian action of X -O Man of War,
and the superhero buddy comedy in Archer and
Armstrong. The Valiant comics were so successful
during their time that most of the titles were
as popular, if not more so, than some of Marvel
and DC's characters. The company and its characters
was eventually sold to a video game company Acclaim
Entertainment in 1994, where in hopes to boost
sales they were retold with a more 90s attitude,
in hopes to spin them off into video games, toys,
and animation. The switch didn't last, and by
1999 Acclaim decided to shut down publication
of the comics in order to save money after suffering
losses from a number of their video game ventures.
Fast forward to 2012, where Valiant Entertainment,
a retooled version of former parent company Voyager
Entertainment, began publishing new versions
of the classic characters based much more closely
on the original titles than on the 90s reboots.
Thus far, the five core titles Shadow Man, Harbinger,
Exo Man of War, Archer and Armstrong, and Bloodshot
boast such artistic talents as Cary Nord, Clayton
Crane, and Phil Hester on art, while writers
like Robert Venditti, Fred Van Lenti, and Patrick
or handle the words. The new Valiant has only
been around since April of this year, and they're
already garnering some critical acclaim from
fans and critics. But with its first crossover
coming next year in the form of the Harbinger
Wars, and even more Valiant resurrections planned,
time will tell if this new version of Valiant
will make as much of a mark as it did the first
time around. Last year amidst the cries of readers
everywhere DC decided to reboot their entire
universe except for Batman and Green Lantern
because Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison have spent
the last five years setting up storylines. Throughout
the last year DC has published three successive
waves of titles allowing DC to keep control on
ones that are successful and canceling low -selling
titles such as Hawk and Dove and Justice League
International to keep things moving along. DC
also established separate stables of titles such
as Justice League, The Edge, and The Dark which
allows writers to focus more on characters and
particular genres while still allowing for tightly
controlled crossovers. Besides well -known characters
such as Superman, Batman, and The Flash, DC also
resurrected titles such as National Comics and
DC Comics Presents in order to shine the spotlight
on more obscure characters like Kid Eternity
and The Blue Devil written and drawn by rotating
creative teams. Like some of their characters,
DC has been reintroducing classic concepts and
certain ongoing stories from their previous continuity.
The reinvention of the multiverse in the New
52 has been slowly and somewhat teasingly been
introduced throughout titles like Mr. Terrific,
Earth -2, and world's finest. Out in space and
on Earth, Green Lantern of Sector 2814 Sinestro
and anyone else wielding a ring must contend
with the Guardians of the Universe plan to rid
the entire cosmos of emotion with their zombie
-like minions in the current rise of the Third
Army storyline. Also, the Joker is back in a
big way after having his face peeled off in the
early parts of the new 52. Following the hit
Night of Owls storyline, the clown Prince of
Crime is taking part in the death of the family,
seeing him enacting a diabolical new plan to
kill off all of his and Batman's sidekicks just
so they can go back to how things used to be.
See, even the Joker preferred the way things
used to be. Take note, Didio. Outside of the
reboot, DC also decided to offer same -day releases
of both printed and digital issues of their comics,
something that many saw as a bit of a gamble
but has paid off very well for the company. However,
not everything is coming up roses for DC. Many
fans, still feeling betrayed by the reboot, recently
sabotaged a poll on the DC Facebook by adding
extra choices such as stop with all the 90s -esque
reboots and sell all your characters to Marvel
and let them fix the problems. Needless to say,
the poll was very quickly removed from the page.
And when asked about fan favorite characters
such as Stephanie Brown, the former Batgirl,
or why there aren't more female creators at work
for DC, Mr. Dan DiDio has yet to give fans a
clear answer either ducking the questions outright
or just completely ignoring them. Also, many
writers and artists at DC, such as George Perez
and Rob Liefeld, have commented that the behind
-the -scenes of DC Comics is a mess, with artists
and writers either voluntarily leaving the titles
or being shuffled around like a deck of cards.
The moves are very often been described as the
left hand not knowing what the right is doing.
And then there's Gail Simone being fired and
rehired all within a week just before Christmas,
and no one knows why. All in all, much to my
chagrin, DC Comics hasn't completely sucked in
the last year. And while this fanboy is still
not completely sold on the idea, I will admit
that some, not all, but some of the reinvented
concepts are pretty cool. And if Young Justice
can get a cartoon, where the hell is my Captain
Carrot in the Zoo Crew series, dammit? This is
JT from Saskatoon, signing off for 2012. Stay
