Fantasy vs. Reality in Geek Culture

Alrighty then. The Who, The Her. So for the first

time ever here on Geekcast Radio, we are doing

a rant. And it's also going to be a discussion

with myself, TFJ and Mike, and Steve Megatron

is with me. Hello. Hello. This is something that

has been bothering me for a while now, is the

fact that part of the geek community wants fantasy

to become reality and that's never gonna fucking

happen i am so sick of this oh the zombie apocalypse

is real and all this and all that and space corpse

is this and blah blah blah blah blah that and

have your zombie kits ready I was raised to the

point where I know that what is on television

and in movies is make -believe, it is produced,

it is a story to get us engaged to watch a film,

a television show, a cartoon, whatever. I know

the shit's not real. And it just... I don't really

speak out about this a lot because I just kinda,

you know, it's... In the grand scheme of things,

it's not that, you know, the most important thing

to be pissed about, but... It just pisses me

off that everyone, it seems, in the geek culture

these days, and I blame the fucking sparkly vampires,

honestly, wants, you know, vampires to be real,

or wants to be a vampire hunter, or wants, you

know, either to be a zombie or a zombie killer,

it's just... This shit isn't real, people. Yeah,

I... Don't understand why people are so gung

-ho on it or they're they're creating. It's like

the whole 2012 thing Yeah, you know, oh the end

of the world. Oh, let's go live in an underground

bunker and that's you know go hog wild and have

supplies to Timbuktu and we'll have sawed -off

shotguns in case we need them for the zombie

apocalypse which will happen at the same time

planet and rape your brains. I mean it's just

And way back in the day, Abraham Lincoln was

a vampire hunter. But it's like, okay, you know,

everyday life for an adult, you know, for just

an average adult. A normal person? Yes, a normal

person. You wake up, you have breakfast, if you're

in a relationship, you kiss your wife or girlfriend

goodbye, you go to work, or you know, whatever.

Even if it's people that don't work a day shift

and work a night shift, it's the same type of

process. you know that's real life okay and then

you come home whatever time and you know what

let's just use the nine to five as a as an example

you know you come home you have dinner you you

know do whatever household things need to be

done you sit down you watch some TV and you can

watch a show like angel or like supernatural

or smallville or 90210 or you know Dallas, you

know, whatever. You can watch that stuff and

you can escape reality by diving yourself into

a fantasy world. Like when I... Every Wednesday

night on TNT when I go to watch Dallas, yes,

I know South Fork and those characters are not

real, but at that moment in that time frame,

I am engulfed in that story and in that continuity,

and it takes my mind off of real life problems.

That's the whole point of having a line between

reality and fantasy. Yeah, I can definitely agree

with you. Like, yes, would I like Iron Man and

Batman to be real? Well, hell yes, because they

would be cool as hell. But... They're not. They're

fictional characters. Just about everything everybody,

you know, sits there and idolizes is a fictional

character or concept. Yeah. I mean... There's

no point in... I mean, yes, it's okay to like

it and all that good stuff, but... Yeah. I mean,

really, to sit there and act like it's real?

Yeah, we're not saying that. Yeah. Yeah, that's

that's just that shit retarded It's like I'm

saying that you can't like what you want to like

But don't sit there and try to force it on people

that you know Don't sit there and try to force

the idea that the shit is real when it's not

now granted even forcing it It's just people

that seriously believe that there's zombie apocalypse

going to happen. No, I'm sorry You have a greater

chance of everybody just dying out Yeah, you

know, you know you mentioned Iron Man and Batman

Yes, the people aren't real because they are

characters. The technology is damn real. I mean,

we live in an age now where a lot of that technology

is possible. You know, I mean, Iron Man in 2008

really put a boom on the whole touchscreen thing.

It did. I mean, yes, we did have touchscreen

iPhones in 2007 and stuff, but like when Iron

Man came out, it really, you know, put the boom

on on touch screen technology uh... so the technology

is there for those characters but yeah the idea

of of them existing in the real world is you

know not possible i don't care how many canadians

you know decide to dress up as batman wear hockey

pads and you know shove gravel into their mouth

on toronto batman haha Yeah, I'm not jumping

in that one, but But yeah, I can I can agree

yes, you know what I think it'd be cool to be

Batman. Hell. Yes I would know more than you

know, I would love it, but it's not real and

those fools that dress up like them and public

Are just asking to have their ass whooped by

buying by like crooks and criminals Because you

know, it's just I don't know it's Leave that

to the cops. If you want to dress up for Comic

Con or something like that, yay, do it. Yeah,

there's a certain place and a time to do cosplaying.

If you get a chance to go to Hasbro and you spent

three months working on an Optimus Prime costume

or whatever, sure, wear it out there that day.

You know, to Hasbro to show them how cool your

work is or how awesome your stuff is. That's

all well and good. But going around and... I

don't know. But yes, the main point of this GCR

and rant is that there is a line between reality

and fantasy. Stop crossing it, damn it! Well,

there's a lot of people that don't know the difference

between them anymore. That's true. I don't know

who I am. I think zombies are real I'm gonna

get a gun and I'm gonna brace for it and take

college classes on how to kill zombies properly

with a sword Maybe we should all go to Captain
