About this Episode
Hey, this is Steve blue and you are listening
to the geek cast radio network You're listening
to keep cast radio on the geek cast radio network
Hello and welcome to GeekCast Radio. This is
episode 60 and it is time to reveal the first
annual GCN Awards. I am your host TFJ1Mike. Joining
me is Steve Megajon. Hello. Hello. And Moogarolt
Dan. Hello. How's it going? Yeah, we we have
we all three of us framed optimus solo and sent
him to jail and now this coming Friday as this
episode airs He's gonna come chase after us in
a bunch of need for speed cars. Oh wait. He hates
racing movies So we are here to reveal the first
annual 2014 GCR and awards Steve why don't you
give us some background as far as the process
well the overall process was a lot of back -end
work on the site, but we wanted to kind of, we'd
all kind of discussed it last year about putting
together our own award show, not really to detract
from the current award shows that are kind of
going out, but just kind of our own covering
some of the major. Stuff of course like best
movie and you know the performances and the fights
and special effects Like any good award show
would have but we also included some geeky ones
And some genre specific ones which aren't included
in some other Award shows also adding to the
mix of films we have television a brief animation
one and of course some geek cast radio awards
so there were five choices per category and we
kind of just went from there and The staff voted
one particular way and then Of course the fans
voted another way and I have to say that the
overall Voting we did get massive amounts of
votes Into the you know close to anywhere between
Like around 100 to 150 votes per category. So
there was that But it was kind of interesting
seeing being that I could see everything behind
the scenes which ones were getting knocked off
the top and Which ones were neck -and -neck and
which ones aligned with our votes? Very cool.
Very cool Dan you want to talk a little bit about
the process that you and Kevin did for the movie
award section of it Yeah, sure. Basically the
way we handle the movie section was we came up
with the first came up with the categories We
know we wanted to highlight movies in general,
but also like Steve mentioned have some genre
specific or specific categories that would Allow
for geek centric movies to take center stage
and what we did is I as we came up with the categories
I picked my choices for each category and kevin
picked his And then we put them together and
if there was a match we then obviously chose
that one and then if There wasn't one or there's
a disagreement. We would discuss we would discuss
it to see which one we think better fits Which
one do we think is better? Overall like has more
of the general appeal we try to consider our
opinion as well as just the general consensus
consensus out there in the public as well for
certain picks but um, and When we consider the
picks our first idea was quality first like that's
what we wanted to make sure like these are really
great movies Not necessarily that they're you
know, just because of the subject matter So that's
what we went to first and considering I think
Kevin and I have both huge movie geeks, which
to me means A more broader scale of movies in
general which can so but anyways, that's why
we specifically had categories for like best
fight and best Comic book movie and stuff like
that That way we made sure we didn't leave those
out in the cold because they certainly deserve,
you know spotlight The funny thing is I see both
of you as the gcrn version of cisco and ebert
I guess we know who's who then All right, so
how are we gonna reveal these Steve? Well before
we get into that how I kind of Because myself
and Mike Powers went and selected the TV categories
we each kind of set up certain categories and
then Through shows in there according to We tried
to include some popular ones as well as favorites
to kind of mix it in there a little bit, like
he would choose to, and I would kind of choose
to, but in the separation of the categories kind
of helped split it up a little bit more. Because
like for instance with the TV leads or the you
know having the drama comedy sci -fi All those
different things the intros I admit is a little
lackluster It was more so a space filler Just
getting that out right now But I'm not surprised
by what one in there in the slightest with a
close second for another one. So And then as
far as the GCR and stuff, those somewhat had
me surprised and then other ones did not. So
it was quite interesting seeing how that all
played out. But what was your original question
again? How are we going to go about revealing
these? Are we going to go each category? Yes,
we're going to go each category right down the
line in the exact order that it was on the site.
And I will preface this with saying that you
will not have to click through 26 times like
you did for the voting. I will also be changing
that structure next year when we do this again
hopefully. with a little bit better process in
place. But this will be more than likely a two
-pager setup so that everybody can kind of see
what the results were. So getting into the first
one we have of course the best movie category
Best movie So the winner here Kind of close to
some of the other ones For the fan vote was gravity
followed by the staff vote of her opinions Well,
not super surprised considering the choices that
we gave link gravity is Of all the choices the
most financially the hugest success. I am surprised
that though the second place It looks like Wolf
of Wall Street was in second place, which is
a little surprising to me. I Actually, no, I
think I'm incorrect. No, that was in fifth second
place was 12 years a slave I was looking at the
number of votes. No that yeah, that's that's
the number of votes Mike So yeah, I put them
in order as far as where they were on the graphic
so Okay, so that's surprising. I mean, I'm not
I mean gravity is a is a spectacle for sure It
was one of the biggest hits of last year one
of the few films in the top ten of financially
that wasn't based off a franchise or so so And
it was critically acclaimed as well. So not not
too surprising for me I'm not one that watches
a lot of best pictures. I'm more mainstream and
these movies to me are not mainstream films.
Gravity is essentially this generation's Apollo
13. I haven't seen it. I'm not judging the movie.
I'm just saying based on what I've seen and what
I've heard and what I've read about it, it seems
like it's this generation's Apollo 13. I could
almost get that just for the fact that it's getting
as much critical acclaim as Apollo 13 did at
the time. I have seen three out of these five
movies So I am not surprised at one I have my
own minor nitpicks, but it's more so just because
I Out of this group, I would probably say it's
the strongest one mm -hmm for gravity, but I'm
not generally a fan of what ends up in the best
picture for the most part. Yeah, me either. I
guess my question then would be, since Kevin
and I are the ones that came up with these nominees,
then what would you say deserves to be nominated
here that we didn't choose? See, I would angle
it more towards geek, because I'm not... My question
is what movies? That's what I'm saying. I wouldn't
like... Would I would be biased about it and
angle it more towards something geeky like Transformers
like Iron Man like Captain America something
like that is what I would do. Yep I'm talking
about like in movies in 2013 Like what geeky
films would you have placed in the top five in
the end with I'm just curious you're saying these
aren't films You're interested in which is fine.
So my question was more so than what would you
have placed here? Fast and Furious 6 The Wolverine
Iron Man 3 I can't think of the other two, but
I'm just saying it's like for me personally it
just isn't The best picture category is always
films that I've never even heard of half the
time. Yes I've heard of her. Yes. I've heard
of 12 years of Slave because I have been listening
to MWIRE weekly So I mean I know of these movies
they just don't interest me whatsoever And I
guess I would reply to the saying like these
aren't geek films by saying they're very much
geek films. I don't I hate the idea that we define
geek based upon the simplest factors, that a
movie geek is someone who likes franchise films,
or a movie geek is someone who likes comic book
movies. To me, a movie geek is a person who is
geeky about movies. And I think all these films...
Qualified for that and her it's but even beyond
that is a very much in the geek culture What
it comments on and what it what its themes are
about are very much in the line of geek culture
today technology our addiction to it and Beyond
just that so that's when when that's the way
I approach I guess that's my issue with when
we define the term geek We're very limited in
that view of it and we see it. This is the only
way and it's either it's a really broad term
that we We think that if you're not into comic
book movies or you're not into like Fast and
Furious 6 and that's not a geek movie and I just
I don't feel that way well see I can I can definitely
relate to that and Mike I know is a franchise
and comic geek and racing I And I know Mike tries
to but I try a little bit harder to see movies
that are outside of my range There are some that
I just, I give it the good shot and I still don't.
Like I try and go into it with an open mind and
then after a while certain things start grating
on me a little at a time. But like Wolf of Wall
Street I think would have been better had it
not had so much swearing in it. It was kind of
jarring and it kind of pushed me out of that.
Certain things like that were kind of Little
things were bothering me, whereas I can kind
of get where Mike's coming from where superheroes
type stuff. You kind of put the blinders on even
though you know there's significant flaws. Take
Iron Man 3, for instance. It's a lethal weapon
with Iron Man suits. So yeah, I guess that's
my like wouldn't like I said when we when we
came up with these like the idea was I know this
is gonna be an issue because people are talking
about it which is why I wanted to bring it up
was the idea like all these aren't geek movies
and I just that to me is just what kind of aka
grinds my gears a little bit when like when geeks
try to hold take hold of that statement and saying
it has to fit in this box and It doesn't fit
in this box. It's not part of keep them. I don't
think that's really true So that's my only issue.
I mean, if you don't like these movies, that's
fine. I mean, apparently there was a great deal
of people out there that did like these movies.
But when we try to come up with a category, like
I said, our our idea was quality first. We weren't
going to put something here just because of subject
matter. We weren't going to put an Iron Man 3
here because it didn't deserve to be. If we did
this two years ago, yeah, we probably would have
put the Avengers and Dark Knight Rises because
they deserve to be. But last year was kind of
a lackluster year for geek movies. It really
wasn't that many great stuff. I kind of agree
with you there. I didn't like this year. I really
can't. I really can't argue with what got placed
where it did this year because there really was
no other good films that could have made these
lists. And that's that's kind of so I don't fault
you guys or go beyond that point or whatever.
It's and I. Definitely agree. You know if there
were adventures or Dark Knight Rises. Yeah, I
could have seen these on there, but It was a
totally different comic year last year, and I
don't think that they were up to par like hopefully
this time next year we'll be talking about a
X -Men for days of future past because For love
of God hopefully that lives up to the possibility,
but this year just it wasn't really I mean even
Star Trek in the darkness Which we did nominate
for best bet science fiction like even Star Trek
fans really hated that movie So it's like they're
writing anyone I'm a huge Star Trek fan and I
was tearing that movie apart. I mean, I'll get
into something like that eventually in MWIRE,
but it's yeah, it's got definitely its flaws.
So the least voted on item in the best movie
category was Saving Mr. Banks. And then, of course,
like I said before, the highest was Gravity and
then our pick was her for a grand total of 138
votes. Okay, I mean that's good to see that amount
of votes. That's it's pretty awesome Best male
performance So jumping into male performances
We have the nominees of Tom Hanks as Captain
Phillips we have the I Cannot pronounce his name
chair tell a Geo for I'm glad you're here. For
12 years a slave Joaquin Phoenix in her Matthew
McConaughey Dallas Buyers Club and then Oscar
Isaac and inside Lewin Davis. And the winner
of this category for the voter end was Tom Hanks
and Captain Phillips for a grand total of 33
votes. And the staff pick was Joaquin Phoenix
in her Then of course the lowest voted on item
or nominee was Oscar Isaac and inside Lewin Davis
for 13. So it's a grand total of 121 votes here.
That's kind of crazy because what like five votes
separates the third place finisher with the first
place finisher with Tom Hanks with McConaughey
was only two votes behind and then Chotel was
only a few votes after that. So that's that's
kind of crazy. He just He just lost so McConaughey
might have the Oscar but Tom Hanks has the geek
cast radio award, which honestly what's more
important? No, I will say that it was kind of
neck -and -neck between Matthew McConaughey for
a while and Tom Hanks on The voting as I was
checking it So it was kind of interesting watching
it kind of climb higher I'm not I'm not familiar
with really any of these films in this category.
So And some people are watching asking probably
looking at the suffix that her one best movie
in walking Phoenix best Male performance and
that's a large part because her somehow ended
up being my favorite film of the year Last year
and so and Kevin's and we have very different
not very different but different taste in film
So somehow they align with that movie. So that's
why it's taking a lot of the staff votes Best
Female Performance Female performances we have
the winner of the fan vote being Sandra Bullock
in Gravity for 36 votes and the low -end vote
was Olivia Wilde in Drinking Buddies for 16 votes
and the staff pick was Amy Adams in American
Hustle That kind of surprises me considering
that um Neither Dan or Kevin really cared that
much about American Hustle as far as I can remember
we both liked it And Amy Adams was my favorite
female performance of last year. There are issues
I had with that movie, but one issue I didn't
have was Amy Adams in that film. I thought honestly
even after seeing Blue Jasmine that I still think
she's my favorite female performance last year.
She had a character that was very layered and
very complicated, and she really, really nailed
that. But overall, yeah, like we had our issues
with that movie. But Sandra Bullock, like kicking
butt, that to me is a little bit surprising because
I know people like that performance, but I had
assumed kind of Amy Adams would take it because,
you know, she, let's just say her wardrobe is
very geek friendly. Yes. Do you say that? Dan
would you say that gravity is kind of pushed
her? Back into the limelight again because it's
been a little it. I mean, I know she had oh What
was that? With the blind the blind I know she
had the blind side, but Like this seems to have
really pushed her back into her early Popularity
back in like the late 90s and stuff. Would you
say that it has done that or she's been I mean
She's been pretty steady last few years because
not only like not only the blindside, but she
had the proposal which was a pretty big hit I
wasn't a big fan of that film, but it was a big
hit plus she was in the heat this early the summer
Which was also a pretty big hip maybe more so
from Elizabeth McCarthy more than her but I think
this kind of for a lot of people who weren't
big fans of the blind side, myself included,
this is kind of the performance that sold her
because personally, this is my favorite performance
of hers that wasn't like a comedic performance.
So but I do think it kind of shows that she's
an actress to be, you know, to be respected.
And she wasn't just like a one hit wonder like
you have sometimes, like with those actors that
get an Academy Award and then don't do anything
afterwards, you know, like Cuban Gooding Jr.
or other people like that. So. Yeah, let's face
it Cuba Gooding jr. Is only good for showing
people the money Yeah, I'm pretty sure she has
a lot of bill collectors asking him that same
thing right now But yeah, I I can kind of see
why everybody voted for Sandra Bullock though
and in gravity because she did do quite a wide
range of emotion and She pretty much carried
the whole film Yeah, it was pretty much her.
I mean there was Little for her to rely on besides
just herself. So so I mean something to be said
by those Yeah, so I mean I can I can see where
she got all as much a claim as she did But I
was my vote was Amy Adams so Moving on to the
next category we have the best fight action sequence
best fight action sequence No surprise to me
the winner of this is the Pacific Rim battle.
Yes, the infamous Jaeger versus Kazoo Tokyo battle.
Yes with a grand total of 38 votes and it's pretty
much neck -and -neck for the rest of them The
the low end of the voting scale was Thor for
the portal battle at 20 votes and the staff pick
was Pacific Rim. Yeah, I kind of thought Midair
Rescue from Iron Man 3 had a shot because that
was a pretty pretty awesome sequence in that
film just in how it was shot. It looked like
they literally did that in real life. But for
like probably one of the most if talking about
a bad geek here for movies, one of the big geek
highlights was Pacific Rim. I know not for Mike,
but A lot of people love that film, and the one
moment people go to the most is that famous Tokyo
battle. It looks fantastic. It's a lot of fun.
A little bit of humor thrown in. And just big
robots fighting big monsters. And it looks fantastic.
Can't really ask for more for a summer blockbuster.
Let's clarify something, people. Humans in giant
robots. It's G .I. Joe all over again. No, it's
Pummer Masters. Or Headmasters. OK. yeah think
of it that way now watch the movie any better
um next category all righty best special effects
the next category we have is best special effects
and with resounding almost 25 plus It's not 25
plus, but it's almost that way vote it wins at
50 votes and that is gravity and The low -end
special effects is as the great and powerful
The staff pick was of course gravity Yeah, there's
really there's really no question here. I mean
gravity even on CGI a lot lies and just Generally
how that film was shot. It was watching the special
features of that movie. You just realize how
Incredible that movie was to be made literally
making technology days before the movie was shot
in Alfonso Cuaron kind of Redefining the way
you can shoot in space probably the first time
since you know 2001 in space odyssey that has
weightlessness actually been so effective so
it's a no -brainer I Just saw I was the great
and powerful maybe about a month ago or so it
had come on stars and um i enjoyed it i enjoyed
it a lot more than i thought i was going to considering
it's a story that takes place before dorothy
but i thought it was really good i thought the
The color effect from black and white to color.
I thought that was a nice little transition white
But I mean going up against gravity, of course,
it's not gonna win Well, anytime you get space,
it's pretty much guaranteed to win for the most
part Compared to anything else. So that means
next year Transformers is gonna win, right? It's
not in space It might be you never know they
might go back to Cybertron Although you might
see days of futures past kick its butt. So that's
true, too or Captain America or something along
those lines. But yeah, I'm kind of surprised
Oz got as low as it did, or Thor for that matter,
but I would definitely argue that the other three
had more things that weren't as easy to conjure
up, whereas Oz, everything that was in that was
pretty much done before at some point. True.
To me Oz had a really, there are moments in Oz
that really impressed me but there are a lot
of moments that just looked really like you could
see the blue screen and just it was a little
bit uneven. Sometimes it was like looked really
good and other times it was just like the porcelain
doll and that was fantastic the way that was
portrayed but other times when they're like going
through the world and stuff like that it just
didn't feel like they were there. Well, they
were working in a giant blue screen warehouse
in Pontiac, Michigan There's ways to do that
make it make it seem real and that just didn't
do that It just I think it could have been just
the coloring of it just didn't seem it seemed
a little off If the listeners go back and watch
very very carefully Steve is one of the munchkins,
right? I would have loved to have been on set.
I'm actually like an hour drive from there. So
I'm gonna try and attack Batman, Superman. Which
we'll also be shooting there. So moving on, we
have the best opening. And no surprise again,
Gravity takes another one away at 39 votes. And
the low end here... the place beyond the pines
Pick is gravity. Yeah for those What makes the
opening of gravity so fantastic is the how it's
done in an uncut? It's uncut for a good ten minutes
or so It's one fluid motion from the opening
shot to basically until it all goes to hell I
found the Koran who of course is infamous for
his long takes. I mean, especially with something
like children of men That's where it's a little
bit probably a little bit more complicated because
you don't have cgi helping you but it's just
His camera work just is very fluid in that film
and it's put on display right away and how it
opens up with like You know just the earth and
it holds on that and it allows it like the shuttle
to Quietly and quick and slowly come into play
and then allows everything to play out. I think
it is It's a moment that to me sold the film
immediately and let you know that this was not
just gonna be your typical, you know space adventure
Yeah, it was kind of interesting watching that
how that took place It was kind of weird seeing
it just all of a sudden you're in space so And
then everything starts going wrong I I do really
I was hoping the place behind to get a little
bit more love I know a lot of people a lot of
people I talked to were like I don't really see
anything special with that opening and I can
kind of see that but if you go back and you watch
the beginning of a place beyond the pines which
may be a movie that a lot of people have not
the opportunity to check out it's again one fluid
cut it stays with one shot up into like uh well
Ryan Gosling gets into this like crazy like carnival
uh biker ring thing and it just it's the way
the camera works with and that was also really
fantastic and and then something with it you
look at a American Hustle, which is literally
just Batman putting on a wig But it's it it's
one of those jokes that it holds on it for so
long It's really funny and then where it leads
to just it's just a great payoff. So That's standing
Alrighty, so moving on we have the best ending
Which gravity is not among the group? Captain
Phillips runs away with it at 46 votes and the
low is open grave at three The staff pick was
prisoners. I don't even think I even heard of
the name that film open grave That was actually
Kevin's pick. So I haven't had the opportunity
to check it. Unfortunately, he's here not to
kind of go over it but uh Not surprised Captain
Phillips ending was pretty amazing from the last
50 minutes to like when it all comes to conclusion
to Tom Hanks's final moments in that movie Which
are to me the like if you wondering why he won
best actor in our awards. It's for that last
Ten, you know five minutes or so which are just
Really just moving and really like hard to watch.
It's like one of the first times you see like
shock actually Depicted in a realistic fashion
and to me. It's what elevated Captain Phil is
beyond just a Thriller, but actually gave it
something a little bit extra. So I don't know
if you guys have the opportunity to see that
yet That's on my to -do list I'm I have seen
prisoners Which was interesting but the ending
was kind of Anti -climatic in a sense Purposely
in climate climate magic. I would say yes. I
I understood why they left it the way they did
It just did I was kind of like huh? Why? Did
they leave it the way they did for sequel purposes?
I don't know. I doubt it. It was more of a end
of story Best animated film So moving on to the
best animated film Oh God I'm sorry Mike We have
frozen with a resounding 42 votes The low end
of the spectrum we have the crude's at 9 and
the staff pick was frozen I thought dark knight
returns would have a shot just because we are
geek website, but I guess well It did. I mean
it's at 35. Yeah, it's true. It's not far off.
It's technically in second place I'm surprised
that Monsters University got lower than Despicable
Me 2 as much as I love Despicable Me 2. I'm I'm
really surprised that university didn't get more
votes And recently stars aired University and
Monsters Inc back -to -back, watching those two
films in order, simply amazing. They just are.
Well, they butt right into each other, and I
myself, The Croods, I didn't really care for
all that much. Despicable Me was good, the second
one. But I found myself liking Monsters University
more so than that. I have no gripes with where
frozen landed and the Dark Knight returns part
two I'm surprised it didn't get number one But
I'm also not because more people had the wider
exposure to frozen being in that it was a theater
Yeah Now, you know, we've talked about this a
little bit before do you Does anybody think that
DC should attempt to go back to theaters with
animation because The only one they ever did
was Mask of the Phantasm, and as good as that
movie is, it did not do well in theaters. I mean,
we all know they make their money in the direct
-to -DVD market, but I'm wondering if awards
for best animated feature would be higher for
superhero animation if it wasn't theaters. I
do think the market's so flooded now with comic
book movies, it would be a mistake because people
want live action. And the DVD sales aren't fantastic
for those movies. They're really good, but they're
not numbers you would look at and say, hey, this
could be this can make it in the theater. Maybe
if you had something like one of the biggest
tales done or something like that. But if I just
don't I just don't see it happening. I don't
think that a cartoon animated film has a crossover
appeal that a live action movie does, because
a live action movie can get. actors like a Robert
Downey jr. Or Christian Bale or get a director
behind it that people know and people Go to it,
but and I don't and I mean movie I don't know
I mean I want to be against it, but I just think
it it would it would be hard I would think that
they'd almost run the risk of like you said Dan
kind of flooding the market between the live
-action and the animation and confusing people
possibly because People kind of get said oh,
you know, did you see the one Batman movie? Which
one are you talking about or saying? No, I saw
the live -action one with so -and -so. No, I'm
talking about the animated one or I think mask
of the phantasm was it was one of those intro
things at that time because it was 1993 I myself
that was the first movie I ever saw in theater.
So I it holds a special place for me, but As
much as I'd like to see them hit theater, I don't
think that it would go over very well even today.
Even if there wasn't a live action superhero
film, I think that the animated stuff just, I
don't think, because people are gonna wanna go
more towards the Disney's or the DreamWorks or
for instance, the Lego movie or the Mr. Peabody
and. So I mean there's there's that that's gonna
conflict with it. It's funny like you brought
that up Mike and I didn't even think the fact
that Disney animation is doing that pick here
six movie, which is An animated love future that
will be released in theaters, which is a comic
book movie So yeah, I guess that'll be though.
That's not like a well -known property. So I
don't know. Do you guys think that Disney is
gonna turn Frozen into a sequel farm? I don't
think so. They haven't really done it yet with
any of their films with Tangled or Wreck -It
Ralph. So maybe direct -to -video stuff. I hope
they don't because that's what ruined the 90s
Renaissance is when they got all the ridiculous
sequels. Well, do you want... Pixar to do another
Monsters film. Because after seeing University
and Ink back to back, you know, in order, I would
like to see what happens after with those characters.
Even if it's not necessarily a full -on film,
but like Disney does these shorts, like they
did Tangled ever after, they do the Toy Story
tunes and all that. Well, to me, I think that
it would be alright if the story was right. It
was kind of a fluke that Monsters University
worked out as well as it did because generally
with Pixar the second film doesn't do so well
as the first film and If they happen to hit,
you know, like Toy Story 3 They happen to Hit
the emotional chords and actually get close to
the first one plus some Whereas the second one
I enjoy it, but I don't enjoy it as much as three
It's kind of one of those tricky double -edged
swords that you can either land on the flat side
and be okay or impale yourself and screw the
franchise. I don't know how I feel about them
doing another Monsters film, now like an Incredibles
film. I think would be would be okay in today's
age. I don't want them to turn frozen into a
sequel farm I think it kind of had its own nice
ending where it was and I I don't know I'm kind
of leaning more towards Like Disney I enjoy more
of their original stuff than I do most other
companies but as far as the animated stuff is
concerned, but Yeah, I mean I wasn't a huge fan
of Monsters University. I thought it was okay
I thought unlike other Pixar films didn't really
transcend the material that it that it was depicting
So I would not be in favor of another Monsters
movie. I want Pixar to get back to original material
again I would I love to see them stop doing sequels
though an incredible sequel would be acceptable
as long as Brad Bird was behind it But I don't
know. I'd rather just see them get back to new
original ideas because I I kind of miss that
from Pixar Well, what I've read is they're saying
about every three years, they're going to do
a sequel. Yeah. But every year they're planning
on doing an original project. I know that I've
heard rumblings that there's a Toy Story four
in the works, which I think is a mistake because
one, the actors are getting older and two, it's
just they I think they kind of wrapped it up
nice and three. There's no need for another one.
Yeah, I agree. Finding Nemo. I can kind of get
the second film. because it's been years later
and the story's supposedly right which again
that's the same story same thing with Incredibles
2 if they were to do it I think that the story
needs to be right I don't think that they need
to just make it to make it agree so I think we'll
move on to the best comic book movie best comic
book film Some of them are close The grand winner
of this category is iron man 3 at 33 votes and
the low is kick -ass 2 with 10 the staff vote
was iron man 3 Yeah, I'm surprised everybody
does like that movie I'm surprised kick -ass
2 got 10 votes. Honestly, uh Literally, we nominated
every comic book movie that came out last year
Yeah, it wasn't a big year though. I like I thought
they were all solid films I mean kick -ass to
a side, but I think I'm in three winning is is
legitimate though I I just rewatched the order
dark world and the more I watched that movie
the more I really I really dig it but uh Yeah,
I'm gonna have to watch it again. I just the
first time I saw Thor even with Brian Tyler's
amazing music as I listen to the music before
I did the movie and Just I was just one of those
things You know and I watched the movie and I'm
like I've seen this before huh more of the same
themes blah blah blah and So I'm gonna have to
go back in and give it another try and see if
I enjoy it more Iron Man 3 Everybody always you
know rags on that movie Oh, this is not the Mandarin
and I was even one of them with the whole Mandarin
swap because that wasn't the Mandarin that I
knew but I understood what Shane Black was going
for there. He was going for their own, the Marvel
Cinematic Universe's own version of the Mandarin
and they basically had two versions. You had
the classic You know the way he looked with Ben
Kingsley and then you had kind of the more modern
with with Killian Everybody complains. Oh, he's
not in the suit enough. He's not in the suit
enough, and oh, it's just you know It's just
another it's just another Iron Man 2 Iron Man
3 takes place after Avengers. It's you know Tony
Stark is psychologically damaged anyone would
be if you went through a wormhole into space
and he used to be a drinker so yeah you know
the dude is like I said he's just not there in
this movie he's he's out of it half the time
and by the end he does come around what I liked
about iron man 3 was if I was gonna probably
pick a suit that I really enjoyed the most is
probably the the mark 42 sure you have to inject
nanites into yourself to be able to control it
but I mean a remote control a remote controlled
suit of armor that's pretty awesome I do like
how they kind of fit in the Hulkbuster armor
at the end I thought that was cool I didn't so
much mind The kid everybody else that I talked
to seemed. Oh my god They're putting another
kid into a movie and oh my god. It's this and
oh my god. It wasn't that bad Yeah, I had no
issue with that kid I thought it could could
have been a lot worse and I kind of like the
fact that they had the opportunity to kind of
get melodramatic but you know in a way kind of
made fun of it and Steve I know you talked about
how I'm in three was very much influenced by
the you know 80s action comedies like lethal
weapon and 48 hours and stuff like that Which
it was done by the guy that did some of the lethal
weapon Yeah, so my shame black who wrote lethal
weapon and he drafted kiss kiss bang bang Which
is the movie that kind of relaunched Robert Downey
jr. And I like that actually I like taking I
mean I think those homages are blatantly there
on in there as more of like a respect and I Liked
how he was out of the suit and it had interesting
action set pieces. Like we talked about the midair
rescue, but I also really love the one gunfight
which he's possibly partially armored. And you
talked about the Mandarin. Well, I don't know
if you guys saw the most recent Marvel one -shot
that's on the Thor Blu -ray, All Hail the King,
but without giving spoilers away, those who are
complaining about the Mandarin, all I say is
check that out and you might change your mind.
No, I mean, I kind of agree with, like, I've...
seen all of them. Man of Steel, I kind of enjoyed
it, but not to the degree I did some of the other
films. Thor, I'm not a huge fan of Thor, although
I would argue that this film is better than the
first one. Kick Ass 2, while enjoyable, is a
shut your mind off kind of movie. I wouldn't
say that it's a good movie by any means, but
it was kind of... fun to watch and I say kind
of it didn't have sorry but the Wolverine I enjoyed
although I had my issues with it it was it was
okay but it was kind of to me like another origins
X -Men like the of the wolf of Wolverine not
not necessarily the first class but just the
other one and then Iron Man 3 of course I mean
although it was lethal weapon ask I enjoyed it
more than any of the other films here. With regards
to the Wolverine, since even though as of this
episode Marvelous March has not started yet over
in the poll bag, Ryan Porter from Positively
Nerdy and I went through Wolverine by Claremont
and Miller, where most of that story is kind
of taken from, about him going back to Japan
and everything else, and I gotta say, The Wolverine
was so much better than Origins. It was so much
better than X -Men Origins. I definitely agree
with you there. I was saying that to me it's...
It's just another... It's like them telling the
same story again. But this focuses more on his
life in Japan, I think. And it does. You know,
X -Men Origins was... rehash of x2 with him going
back to alkali lake and all this and all that
but it just The wolverine it was so much so much
better done that being said I don't know if I
could rank these films like best to worst from
my own personal taste because I Enjoyed each
of them minus Thor which I have to give another
shot to Thor and I will never watch kick -ass.
I will never watch that movie. It's alright The
first one is much better because it understands
that it's a satire the second one I don't think
does and it's not it's not done by Matthew Vaughn
who directed the first one and directed x -men
x -men first class and you can tell because it
doesn't it feels Less important and kind of in
on its own joke Yeah, everyone complains about
man of steel and oh my god superman should be
paying more attention to all the devastation
he's letting being caused and this what i liked
about man of steel was how they told the origin
story in flashbacks i liked that approach more
and it gave me more of a mystery as to who clark
really is than just going straightforward like
the original superman movie did I mean, I like
that. I like the original 1978 Donner film. But
I'm glad they didn't just do that again here
to be able to tell his origin. You know, everybody
says, Oh, I can't get killed by a tornado. Well,
what's What's more devastating to a child your
your father collapsing in the middle of a field
from a heart attack Or being swept away by a
tornado. I would think a tornado would be more
devastating yeah, but I guess the issue is that
the idea of I think that's kind of the issue
with a dose that it has to be something so grand
when having it something more small and intimate
is more powerful because it's Even like the power
of superman can't stop deaths from happening
to someone right? I mean, I like man of steel.
I didn't I gave it a pass. I didn't love it.
I didn't really hate it. Like I know a lot of
people have it's one of those That's like I think
the common thread with a lot of the geek films
last year Is that you have a people that love
them and you have a huge amount of people that
hate them. There wasn't really one universally
loved geek movie and except for maybe Pacific
Ram it comes to the closest but everything else
has factions on both sides The other reason why
I enjoyed Man of Steel is I enjoy it for what
it's potentially going to set up in later films.
Potentially is a good word. Well, that's because
they have this whole versus thing and that's
a topic for another day. No, no, that's a topic
for another day, but I'll say this. I wish they
wouldn't have announced that and wish they would
have just gone with a true Superman sequel before
bringing the Dark Knight in, but we'll talk about
that at some other time. So, getting into the
next category, we have Best Comedy. Best Comedy.
And this one has been kind of neck and neck,
and this is the one I almost had to have the
staff vote on, but thankfully the voters voted.
We have... This is the end at first place with
a close second being the world's end and then
our low bottom feeder of the comedy department
is the heat at 12 and the staff pick is this
is the end. I'll say this right now and then
I'll let you guys talk. I'm not a fan of current
-day comedy films anymore. The last two or three
years Every time I see a trailer for a comedy
film. It's like yeah, I don't care I don't know
what it is. It's just I Guess comedy comedy and
film has changed too much for me that I'm just
not interested. I just don't find it funny anymore.
I Don't know I I don't know I don't know what
to tell you but um Looking at these two categories.
I'm not surprised that I mean these two Films
this is the end and the world's and not to surprise
that they're neck -and -neck Knowing that the
world's end is directed by Edgar Wright who has
a huge following and this is the end was which
pretty much the the comedy of the summer I I
had a hard time myself picking both of them.
So that's kind of interesting that came down
to these two I Didn't love this is the end as
much on the first time watching it But I think
it is a comedy that does get funnier the more
you watch it It's it, you know, it's Seth Rogen
His in his writing partner and they can be you
know, it's it's still in our comedy But it's
actually smart and there's actually some interesting
things going on there and it's craziness But
to me, I think the actual better movie. I don't
know if the funny movie is the world's end because
there's more to it It's better attracted. It's
better acted like Simon Peggy was in that I think
it was probably the best performance of his career
in a comedic film, but it has almost like a Some
depressing moments in a way, but I don't know
I I think it wasn't the greatest year for comedy
But those two stood above pretty much everything
else For me I I've seen a few of these I haven't
seen all of them, but I'm not a fan of Seth Rogen
and his brood And then I'm not of course a fan
of British comedy So those pretty much killed
those two for me. I watched The Heat. I didn't,
it was alright. I don't really care either way.
Same thing with Werther Miller's. I enjoyed some
of the stupidity things that went on in it, but
it wasn't great either. But yeah, I just, I don't
think that it was a strong year for comedy, but
I don't foresee it being. I mean, I could be
proven wrong next year, but I don't foresee this
year being much better. Well, there is always,
you know, Jim and Jim and Jeff reuniting. So
that is true. Bright, shiny spot for 2014. So
you're saying there's a chance? Well, for one
film, yes. OK, you guys don't get the reference
to Dumb and Dumber. Come on now. So there is
a chance. Yeah, I remember. nice so best action
film giving me the next category we have best
action film and fast and the furious 6 takes
it away at 32 votes with the low being two guns
at nine votes and the staff pick was fast and
furious 6 I am so surprised that Two guns only
got nine votes. Like, you know, I knew Fast and
the Furious 6 was going to win just because it's
Fast and the Furious. And everybody that complains,
oh, it's just a race. It's not a racing franchise
anymore, people. It isn't. It stopped at three.
Well, it stopped at four. But yeah, they kind
of work it in, but they... As of Fast and Furious
4 they're more heist films. They're more action
-oriented. They're more story driven now and
what they did with Fast 6 and Fast 6 is the first
because the I Know you guys know this but the
listeners may not know this the the timeline
for Fast and Furious franchise. It's 1 2 4 5
6 and then 3 which is 3 is Tokyo Drift Actually,
no, it's four five three then six because six
is the first film to take place after Han dies
in Tokyo Drift And it's interesting to see how
they did that Fast and the Furious has become
a franchise that it it's like car racing for
For gun nuts because it's basically the expendables
version With cars because you have jason statham
now in both franchises Yeah, I mean the fashion
series films I personally was not a fan for a
very long time until the fifth one came because
I I always thought they were never big car racing
fan so i didn't have that much interest but when
the rock came in i kinda i got back on board
i i thought fast four was pretty horrible i did
see that the movie is really awful but the less
and less than diesel is the focal point the better
the movies have become hopefully that keeps it
stays the same i don't know i mean fast four
and fast six are essentially sequels to each
other because fast four they set up the whole
thing with letty And then fast six is where she
comes back so I mean That that franchise is one
of the most convoluted plots for such a like
blank brainless film It's just like all these
different timelines and stuff like that It's
kind of crazy, but the action set pieces are
pretty fantastic and it's you know It removes
logic and replaces it with craziness and fun.
So I can go for it's not everyone's cup of tea,
but I I do I do I did really enjoy fast six I
I do have to call out Gary Mike Justin and Chuck
for Not getting there. What's on Joe mine army
to get GI Joe to higher votes I Surprisingly
liked retaliation like I liked it's taken me
when did rise of Cobra come out Steve 2009 It's
it's taken me five years To enjoy different parts
of rise of Cobra and it's taken me USA basically
shoving it down the viewer's throat if you watch
the channel To to be able to actually somewhat
enjoy that movie, but retaliation was so much
better I had so many issues with the first film,
but the second film John shoot definitely kept
it close to at least the characterizations close
to what they should have been in the first film
despite the fact that none of the original cast
from the first film was in it except for Snake
Eyes and Duke and Storm Shadow Well, Duke died
fairly fast So they let you believe No, he's
dead. Well, there's your body. They never die.
They never showed a body. So they left it open
for a third film. He had other cut. They were
planning on killing him, but they reshot a lot
of stuff. So I'm almost betting that if they
the need arises and plus his schedule was busy,
they would have gotten them for a third film
if they do one. But I definitely enjoyed to especially
seeing Cobra Commander and a faceplate and. Snake
Eye is having a mask that doesn't have a mouth
and so on and so forth. And then seeing The Rock
and Bruce Willis in there of course are bonus
points. Definitely fitting in their roles too.
The other film that I enjoyed was Olympus Has
Fallen, which granted there was the other film,
The White House Down, which essentially is the
same damn movie. You either like one or you like
the other that's just how I've noticed when I'm
talking to people about it It's for me. I found
White House Down to be not as good as Olympus
is fallen But I think Gerard Butler pulls off
the the action role better than Channing Tatum
does Olympus has fallen was the best die -hard
movie of last year Yeah, that's and that's my
point Olympus has fallen if you would have put
John McClane in there that would have been shot
die -hard five easily Yeah, it would have been
better than Die Hard 5. Oh, definitely. And this
is something that I've talked to Mike about off
air is once a franchise goes on, you know what's
gone on too long when it jumps ship and goes
over to another country. Look at Police Academy.
Yeah. So it's once it goes over to that other
country, you're done. Yeah. And unfortunately,
they're doing a sixth Die Hard in another country.
When you mentioned John Chu kept G .I. Joe retaliation
on course, I was going to make a Star Trek joke,
but it's John Cho that's instead. Oh, God. Yeah.
Get it straight. Two different people. Yeah,
I know. All right. Speaking of science fiction.
That's our next category. Best sci fi. And winning
this category is, as expected, Gravity at 40
points. And the low for this category is World
War Z at 10. And the staff pick was Star Trek
Into Darkness. Yeah, though Pacific Rim is not
too far behind, only seven votes behind Gravity.
So that's that's a pretty strong showing. But
yeah, not too surprising. The funny thing is,
Trek is half. Yeah. As someone who had not seen
the original Wrath of Khan before seeing Into
Darkness, I went into Star Trek 2 fairly fresh.
There were several parts of the plot that I didn't
really care for, but the effects in that movie.
Mean 21st century seeing the Enterprise underwater
and come up out of the water. That was awesome.
Oh Come no, no, there's no way physically possible
for that ship to survive underwater It couldn't
in the original and it couldn't hear like it's
nice. There's no don't even get me started I'm
not saying I'm not saying it's possible in the
I'm not saying it's not cool. I just I it's it
it bothers me because from a scientific standpoint
and from a Star Trek standpoint, there's no freaking
way it could ever be underwater or get in. It
can float barely in the atmosphere like the original
Enterprise did, but there's still that's there's
so many issues with that film. I love it because
it's Star Trek, but I can pick pieces out of
Space Seed and all 10 previous Star Trek movies.
Yeah. And place them into this film. Yeah. That's
how many plot holes and used devices that are
just haphazardly thrown together and that's why
I say that that writing duel of Orsi and Kurtzman
should never do a sequel of any franchise. Yeah,
I just I think they should and like instead of
paying homage to to Wrath they should have just
Done a continuing adventure something else other
than what they did of this crew You got the first
movie in 2009 sets up the new crew and the new
cast members perfectly All the roles are are
very well filled as far as the old roles and
I just wish that they would have done something
a little bit differently. Do I dislike it because
it's Wrath of Khan? No, because I didn't have
any prior knowledge or I had never seen Wrath
of Khan until after I had seen this. But I'm
really interested to see what they do with the
next film in the franchise. Yeah, I mean, I'm
not a Star Trek fan, so I really... I did see
Star Trek 2 before I saw Into Darkness, but I
mean, the blatant or... homage or the kind of
the ridiculous homage aside my bigger issue was
the fact that 90 % of that story took place off
-screen it was pretty much telling you everything
that was happening and nothing was really shown
to you and I thought the con character was completely
wasted and had very little pointer I just thought
it was just an opportunity that they didn't take
advantage of Go ahead. I was gonna say but I
mean there were fun moments I mean, I did think
Cumberbatch's performance for what he had was
was good and I do like those characters and I
did like the you know, certain certain action
sequences were well handled and special effects
were we're well we're well done but on a story
standpoint like you said Steve it it had some
major plot holes or like I said or just simple
things just happening for me for no apparent
reason just because they're just happening. Well,
like the whole and I'm sorry if this is a spoiler,
but it's been out over a year now. The plot device
of Khan's Blood, which came into play and I'm
like, well, gee, I know what they're doing with
that at the end of the movie. And the whole aspect
of the swapping of roles and then saying this
is what you would have done and this is what
you would have done. That was just sloppy writing.
Yeah, and like the phone a friend to uh old spock
which was yeah, that was sloppy too. Um, and
just like it I was forgot what I was gonna say
and then that the plot device of khan's blood
of being this magical elixir then Becomes an
issue because and it's like well, then you just
cure everything more mortality by using this
blood sample that can pretty much cure everything
so I don't know it like you said there was some
sloppiness going on there it I didn't hate the
movie. I still liked it. But compared to the
2009 film, I thought it was a letdown. Yeah.
And I also think that they could have made Khan's
character stronger. And this is what I talked
about with Mike Powers, too, off air after we
watched it, that it would have been much better
if they had not had him turn evil because he's
evil. They could have reinvented the character
and had him hating Starfleet specifically for
the fact that of what Admiral Marcus did to him.
Yeah. And then that would have been his reason
and vendetta and everything, which was partially
it. But then he turned into this crazy tyrant.
So I you feel more sympathetic on the one end,
but then they also flipped it and mixed the original
story with it. So it kind of. I think it would
have been OK one way or the other, but not both.
But I'm again, not surprised that. Gravity walked
away on its own from the voters Yeah, so I think
we beat this with a dead horse so moving on to
best scenes That scene We have the winner of
that at 12 years a slave for the extended hanging
at 23 votes and the low for here is Captain Phillips
ending scene. The staff vote was 12 years a slave.
I'm surprised Captain Phillips ending scene got
last when it got like best closing. So that's
that's interesting. I guess people didn't vote
for it twice. To me, that the hanging scene is
the movie moment of the year when Kevin Optimus
soloed like he did a Article month or two ago
of its favorite scenes He put this as number
one and it's hard to disagree with and looks
like the fans also agreed but uh Looks like this
voting was super close I mean like I had similar
with 12 years of slave getting 23 votes the lowest
one on the totem pole captain Phillips got 17
so From the highest to the lowest was only six
votes, which is pretty crazy Yeah, I kind of
agree. And it's also kind of nice to see gravity
not take one away. I have to be brutally honest.
I'm surprised the Hobbit fans didn't get smog
up there. It did beat gravity. That's true. It
was second place. Which that that surprised me
because there was a lot of people who hated the
Hobbit too So but there seems like when we were
doing M bar, there was a lot of huge fans of
it So it seems like there are fans of that franchise.
So I Was a fan until they started doing the prequel
trilogy and then I had no desire to watch it
again Yeah, I would I would there's no need I
mean I've enjoyed the Hoppin movies, but they're
they're a huge step down from the the first three
and there is no reason that makes him in the
three movies. It easily could have been one or
two. Yeah. Well, that's kind of jumping on the
same bandwagon is like the Hunger Games, Harry
Potter, Twilight, where they split the last part
of the book or last book itself into two films
just to make a cash cow. Yeah, I would. I mean,
I think with Harry Potter actually made sense
because those last two movies, I think, were
actually were actually good on like And there
was actually a lot there to cover. So I think
that in essence it works for Harry Potter, but
pretty much everything else that's copied it.
I don't know about Hunger Games because we haven't
got there yet. But like, you know, Twilight,
of course, I don't know why that needs to be
two last films for one book when there's barely
any writing in the books to begin with or or
like the Hobbit, which is a was it's a small
book. It's not a huge book. Making that in three
movies is kind of crazy. Yeah, I kind of agree
with you there. So moving on to best hero. Best
hero We have the winner being Tony Stark from
Iron Man 3 at 31 votes and the low is Max DeCosta
from Elysium at 9 votes and the staff pick was
Tony Stark Interesting second place with Katniss
just barely behind her so I I will say that Katniss
was actually leading for a while, and then Tony
kind of shot her down with his Iron Man suit.
Came up with a repulsor to her a little bit there.
You got Jarvis to get him some extra votes, I
guess. Yeah. The vision? Oh, don't even go there.
Sorry, had to do it. I'm kind of glad that Tony
won because you know as I said earlier Iron Man
3 wasn't just a superhero movie. It wasn't just
a sequel. It was a journey into that guy's psyche
It was you know seeing him in the aftermath of
if he had piet PTSD or whatever he had from what
he experienced in the Battle of New York. And
that's what Marvel is doing so well by setting
up this phase one, phase two, phase three kind
of thing with their cinematic universe. Do I
want an Iron Man 4 right away? No, I want them
to build to it. I want them to eventually come
back to it. Like if, you know, if Tony ends up
being the saving grace in Avengers 3 or whatever,
that'll be fine. I think we're looking at a recast
after Avengers 3 or them writing Tony out for
a while. I don't see Donnie Jr. or Tony Stark
making it to an Iron Man 4. No, I don't see it
happening either. Think maybe he'll show up in
the event. He'll obviously show up in Avengers
2 but I don't I don't see another eventual Iron
Man movie like you said unless they Get somebody
else in the armor, which it has happened in the
past, you know There have been other people who've
wore the armor. So it is possible. Well, they
can be a war machine that carry on the legacy
That'd be interesting I'm kind of surprised Katniss
from the Hunger Games didn't come away too because
there was a lot I actually found myself out of
the many films that my wife has dragged me to,
that she's read the books to. I actually found
myself enjoying the Hunger Games. In fact, I
just watched Catching Fire again the other day
when I got it on Blu -ray. The other film I enjoy
was Elysium, which was kind of interesting watching
that original story there. It had the sci -fi
and everything else to get me. enthused. Yeah,
it was basically the Halo movie that has yet
been made. I liked Elysium. It was a little bit
of a letdown compared to District 9, which I
thought was pretty much an amazing film. But
I did like some of the moments, especially the
special effects in that are pretty fantastic.
But what do we got next? Well, we have the best
villain. best villain and Smog from The Hobbit
takes it away at 34 votes and Harland de Groot
from Out of the Furnace takes it away at 11 votes
for the low end of the spectrum and the staff
vote was Zod from Man of Steel Zod was intense
he really was Like I don't like Zod in Man of
Steel I dare say was even more intense than Terrence
Stamp in Superman 2 Yeah, I mean Michael Sheen's
a pretty Formidable actor I I like Zod I I was
I'm a huge Michael Michael Sheen fan So I was
maybe my expectations were too high, but it didn't
really live up to that. I am really surprised
at smog I guess not too surprised. There's a
lot of Benedict Cumberbatch fans out there. And
he was pretty amazing in that role. And I don't
know if you guys saw, but there was images of
Benedict Cumberbatch doing the motion capture
of Smog, even though he didn't necessarily have
to do it. He kind of did it for the voice. And
it's pretty hilarious to watch, though it's interesting
to say the least. Any other comments? Nope. I
think that's the end of it for movies. So we're
on the TV next. Yes, we're on the TV. And so
jumping into that, we have the best TV leads.
Best TV leads. Actually, I was kind of surprised
at who won in this one. It was kind of a toss
up. Two of them, of course, didn't get much recognition,
but I don't think that certain people watch those
shows. For the number one, we had Oliver Queen
from Arrow at 37 votes. And the low end, we had
John Reese from Person of Interest at three votes.
Second on this one was Raylon Givens from Justified.
Third, Agent Coulson from Agents of Shield. And
fourth was Dean Winchester from Supernatural.
And the staff vote was Oliver Queen from Arrow.
They've done a really good job with Arrow. I
know that some people say that season one was
a little slow, but I really enjoyed season one
because Arrow to me is what Smallville was back
in 2001. It's a fresh start on someone new, someone
that isn't Superman or Batman, even though the
Arrow universe is kind of becoming the Batman
universe a little bit. Because I think I think
what DC is trying to do is and I may or may not
get flack for this They're basically trying to
copy Marvel backwards. What I mean by that is
Marvel set up their cinematic universe and then
they had agents of shield and they're now crossing
over between the show and the movies and I think
what DC might end up doing or this my own personal,
you know Guess here is that they're gonna start
off stuff an arrow and then go forward with movies
as they go along Well everything I've read as
far as Arrow's concerned, they are not allowed
to even cross streams with the film franchise
of the DC Universe. It's its own thing. So like
their Oliver Queen or their Flash, it's all its
own continuity right there on TV. It's a totally
separate entity. In the agreeance I I love arrow
it's I wouldn't say it's smallville because smallville
was not as good as arrow No, no what I'm saying
is arrow season one is Now what smallville season
one was when it premiered since that's what I'm
saying, but we put the suit on in the first season
whereas Smallville he never put suit on yeah,
and it's basically a Batman rehash But that's
a that's a tenacality with the show. What I'm
saying is we hadn't had a Superman show or movie
since. Well, show would have been Lois and Clark
since 97. So it had been three years, four years.
And then the movies didn't happen until 2006
from 94 or three somewhere around there. What
I'm saying is. The level of excitement for Arrow
when season one kind of premiered and everybody
was talking about it, that to me is what happened
back in 2001 with the level of excitement for
Smallville. That's basically what I'm saying.
No, Arrow is much better than Smallville, but
it's interesting to see how CW has kind of come
full circle with their superhero shows. I've
only seen the first season of arrow. I mean I'll
save more but I did I do like the betrayal Oliver
Queen I'd as long as he's Oliver Queen the only
time I had issues with it when they were flashback
to his past and he's like the Oliver Queen before
you you know is Transformed into green arrow
and those moments are pretty pretty awful just
because they're so ridiculous, but as that as
arrow I thought he was He's good. And like you
said he's Blatantly trying to be Batman at times
at times a little bit too much And I just one
thing I can't stand with the first season is
a stupid eye makeup stuff Which I still don't
understand the purpose of because it does nothing
just just that's just kind of moronic to me and
But uh, I know we'll probably have more Talk
about an arrow in the future. But just regarding
that actual lead. I do agree with that choice.
I haven't seen justified so I can't speak to
it, but uh Out of the choices, I think we and
the fans made the right one. I find myself enjoying
Agent Coulson from S .H .I .E .L .D., but that's
one of the few points. Supernatural, I really
enjoy. I like the character of Dean Winchester.
He's basically the main guy in that. Is he the
one with the long hair or the short hair? He's
the short hair, but he's the... the kind of gruff
voice when he's talking and about everything.
And so it's OK. And his brother's kind of like,
yeah, like this. And, you know, and he's got
the longer hair and everything. They're both
like frickin tall as hell. But it's yeah, it's
it's a good show. But I do see it trailing. Plus,
CW renewed it for a 10th season. So yay. I've
never really I never really watched it. My wife,
I've seen it like in passing because my wife
watches it. But. For what I saw it look it look
those look pretty interesting. So I can't speak
onto it. It's good, but season Six and seven
are garbage because the original Show writers
and everybody kind of left after five because
the storyline was wrapped up So they were kind
of traveling in the dark and then now they've
got Starting with season eight. They got one
of their guys from the first three seasons back
Writing it and he's kind of tying up everything
Little at a time through season 8 9 and soon
to be 10 So it's it's actually getting good again
but I Now there's gonna be a spin -off. Yeah,
that's gonna flop It just trust me it'll flop
But as far as like arrows concerned the only
thing that's kind of irked me is they're pulling
too many Batman villains in For season two, but
season two is infinitely better than season one
And the eye makeup thing gets addressed in season
two by Barry Allen Yeah, I did see that which
I'm glad about I had other issues with an arrow,
but I'll wait until we Season two definitely
is is worth watching it. Yeah, I really want
to check it out. Unfortunately, it's not Online
yet. It's I watched season one through Netflix
and season two is not really on demand or any
place So once it is I will certainly check it
out because that's that's what I hear about from
pretty much everyone that season two is a huge
step up from season one which I'm glad to hear
so The interesting thing in this category is,
at least to me, I've only seen the first couple
episodes of the first season, but Raelynn Givens,
played by Timothy Olyphant, it's interesting
what they did with Justified, because FX took
Tim Olyphant, and, you know, most people will
know him from Die Hard 4. As the villain they
took him made him the the hero in this show And
then they took one of their previous actors from
one their very first original series the shield
they took Walton Goggins and made him the villain
in this and That guy can play an amazing villain,
but yeah, I would have to say arrow You know
Oliver Queen and arrow was probably the best
choice here And let's just put it this way. It
won't be the last time that the the fans and
us agree Best TV drama Best TV drama We have
the walking dead at 51 votes With the low being
once upon a time at four and the staff vote is
the walking dead Not surprising the walking that
is pretty much a powerhouse. It's like the ratings
of it are crazy for It's getting like network
ratings for basic cable TV show. So but justified
is is not too shabby and Hannibal, I mean is
up there too, but I I know you guys aren't big
zombie fans. I know you guys don't really like
walking dead. I do I do like the walking dead
I don't know if I would call it the best drama
on TV right now certainly Wouldn't say that uh,
I do think it's a fun show. It has its moments.
It's it's well made the Make -up design in that
film is pretty fantastic. The production value
is really good Some of the some of the characters
are are good and some of the act performances
are handled my biggest issue with the walking
dead is how it can't You can either do action
or can do character development in an episode.
It can't put both in one episode at times and
uh the season finale of Season three was kind
of a letdown but it was made up for with the
midseason finale of season four Which was really
really good and I've kind of liked what they've
done so far this year When they've come back,
but I know you guys aren't huge fans of that
I kind of glance over it because I'm in the same
room when my wife's watching it I don't really
care for it per se but it's not it's not my cup
of tea, but I'll at least watch it if I have
nothing better going on. But it's what I've watched
of it. It's not bad. I mean, I've seen most the
last two seasons just because I'm in the same
room. But I know the feeling. But for the most
part, the only one on this list that I actually
watch is Once Upon a Time. But that's just me.
Yeah, I have yet to get into once upon a time.
I want to eventually I've seen maybe two episodes
of Hawaii 5 -0 Justified like I said a second
ago. I only saw like the first couple of episodes
in season one Hannibal just isn't my cup of tea
at all and the walking dead I'm so sick of everything
being oh the zombie apocalypse. Oh this oh that
every Give me a break You're just a bastion of
joy Mike Yeah, I know right as always so speaking
of bad comedy Don't even go there just don't
even start that I thought it was funny Best TV
comedy Best TV comedy the winner is the Big Bang
Theory at 45 votes and It was kind of tied for
the low end which would be the neighbors and
last man standing and The staff pick was new
girl. I Can't believe that what's wrong with
you people? What are you talking about? Big Bang
Theory is so much better than new girl it well
Big Bang Theory won the fan vote Yeah, I know.
It's not, though. It's a beyond. It is, though.
Let me explain to you why it's not. Big Bang
Theory is a show that's a joke a minute because
it doesn't have good characters. It relies on...
It relies on laugh tracks to make the jokes better.
It is a joke. It's a movie. It's a fine show
It's okay. It's it but it's not nearly as well
written as something like new girl and it's not
nearly has actual moments of character that you
know mean more and actually dramatic at times
and I think we could think there is fine, but
I just find it really tiresome in the fact that
has like Four jokes. It has four jokes. You know,
you have the guy who can't talk to women. You
have the guy who's like his issues with his mom.
You know, Jim Parsons is pretty amazing in his
performance. But after a while, it's like, OK,
I get it. He the same jokes over and over again.
It's just a show that I feel like hasn't evolved
since his first season. Um, it's fine that people
like it, but if you're gonna say it's way better
than new girl i'm gonna i'm gonna defend my way
better than new girl and i'm gonna defend my
show to you because you're knocking futz because
it's How many seasons of big bang theory have
you watched? Uh as many I I don't back the back.
I don't know it How many seasons? Okay, so you've
only seen the reruns. Uh, yeah, because I don't
want to waste my time with it Okay, so you're
basically in the same boat that I was with with
Breaking bad, but here's the thing with Big Bang
Theory. I've been watching it since its premiere
Over seven years over seven seasons. They've
built up the characters It's not just it's different
about them now than there wasn't season two Well,
one they see Howard Howard and Bernadette are
married. Okay, that's not that's not a character
development That's just something happening.
How what he's no long. He's no longer living
with his mother She's yeah, she's not actually
Ended the show anymore The jokes there are fine,
but they're really they're basic jokes for the
most part there. They don't have any complexity
to them They're rapid -fire quick joke. Like
if you would watch that show I guarantee you
you and I'll go two minutes without a joke because
they can't not do it people complain about Family
Guy doing that Big Bang Theory's just as guilty
because it can't stop itself It just to me. It's
just the jokes are okay, but I'm like, it's just
it's an okay show I don't I don't I think if
you had those jokes and it wasn't about the subject
matter that it's about or they weren't comic
book fans People wouldn't love it as much as
they do but it's because it has comic book references
that people love it But when a show like community
that's so much smarter with its references and
so it's not it is because it doesn't know it's
not How many episodes of community have you watched?
Probably the first two seasons and I didn't care
for because it's not it's not lowbrow load It's
it's humor that actually knows how to be subtle
and knows how to be satirical. It doesn't have
to be like the most obvious blatant jokes, which
is what Big Bang Theory is. There's no subtlety
to it whatsoever. Let me tell you exactly what
else has changed. Well, Raj can talk to women
now, but they've moved him along in his character
development. They've moved Sheldon along in his
character development. They've moved each of
these characters along very slowly. Think of
Big Bang Theory as the comedy version of Breaking
Bad. It's so slow through the character development.
I know, I'm sorry. I'm not touching this conversation
with a 10 -foot pole. I just, like, if you're
gonna, like, how many, you say it's way better
than New Girl, but how many episodes of New Girl
have you watched? Part of the first season. I
didn't care for it. I don't know which episode's
off the top of my head. Like, let me ask, do
you think if Big Bang Theory wasn't about comic
book references, you would find it as funny as
you do? Probably because it's not just about
comic book references. It's it's pop culture
altogether exactly because it can't It won't
survive without pop culture It's a show that
will not last that long in ten years from now
won't be it won't hold up because it's all about
Jokes from today. It's kind of like Roseanne.
It's like Shrek. It's Shrek the freakin Movie
like it has to rely on pop culture of today to
be funny, which is not which is bad writing It's
done by the same guys that do Two and a Half
Men, so I don't expect much. Well, Two and a
Half Men is worse than Big Bang 3. Well, it's
still written by the same guys. It's the same
kind of comedy. It's geared towards geeks more
so and comic fans and pop culture fans. Comedy
is very subjective. It's an impossible argument
to go over because someone finds it funny, someone
else doesn't find it funny, which is fine. Don't
say that movies that shows really better when
when you all you can really say is like Oh, you
don't really have evidence to really support
that that's my issue. If you're gonna say it's
you like that better fine All right, I'll compare
it to community not new girl. I'll compare it
to community I watched three or four or five
different episodes of community and I did not
find a Single character funny. The only time
Joe McHale is ever funny is when he's doing talk
soup But like you were I don't honestly like
I'd be it's funny because you don't have a good
taste I Neither do you? Calm down. I mean come
on. All right Now I like whose line is it anyway,
although I will admit the ninth season revival
and CW was crap There was too many guests that
five seconds. That's my problem in the fact that
they would introduce one Retro game every episode
and and they would play the same damn. It was
a rerun of the same episode every episode Besides
the the running gag of whoever the guest was
gonna be But you can tell some of the people
clearly didn't want to be there Which I think
kind of detracts from the show having the guests
on there rather than just pulling an audience
member for a random skit every now and again
But it looks like the 10th season that's coming
back later this month Looks to be like it's gonna
rectify those problems. So maybe they were just
using it to gather steam Well, see here's the
thing with whose line is it? Anyway, it was good
but as I said If you're gonna have, what's her
name, Aisha Tyler, and then the three or four
comedy guests. the regular panelists and then
have a special guest. Let that special guest
stay out there the whole time. Don't make it
seem like it's a late night segment that's put
together like crap. Or that they could do what
they used to do on Who's Line and instead of
having a guest, they have the third or fourth
chair be like Stephen Colbert or Robin Williams
or Whippy Goldberg or whoever. Just have an actual
comedy person be there. Yeah. Well, my problem
with the guest was they made it sound like, oh,
we're going to have multiple guests on one episode.
And no, they just had the one guest came on,
made it seem like either, like I said, a late
night talk show or a daytime talk show where
the guest leaves. And then, oh, hey, they're
back. Yay. That was a little... I think it was
a ratings grab to revive it. I think we'll move
on. Yeah. So getting into Best TV Sci -Fi. Best
TV Sci -Fi. This was a very close vote between
three contenders. Supernatural won out at 21
votes. Followed by in close second was Orphan
Black and Almost Human. And the staff pick was
Orphan Black. I've only watched one of these
shows, which was Revolution for the first half
of the first season, which was pretty awful.
So I really can't say much about any of these
shows. All right. I've seen four out of the five
because I actually watch four out of the five
consistently. Supernatural, I... Would say is
my number one favorite out of the group because
I've been watching it since the second season
started airing I own all the seasons of it. I've
been watching it Revolution first season is terrible
Because they didn't know what the hell they were
trying to do once they hit the second season
The first season is basically irrelevant Like
it's I mean it it's somewhat needed because of
the character interactions and some of the things
that happened event -wise But for the most part
the first season is fodder compared to getting
into the second season almost human It's basically
another it's turned into another cop show essentially
just with an Android and Karl Urban So you're
saying it's judge dread and I robot rolled into
one Possibly, I mean it's I lost interest after
watching it eight or nine episodes Continuum
that's when I've been watching on Netflix because
I don't have the channel at Arizona It's actually
a pretty interesting show because it's time travelers
from the future going to the past and interacting
with the guy that created the time travel device
in the future But when he's young like 17 instead
of his 80s. So it's it's showing the setup of
like these organizations and companies and everything
else start up in the past and basically showing
how everything was not deviating from history
in any sense. So. And I know nothing of orphan
black. Saw the previous for it and I was like,
what is this? I Don't know I'm just not into
the sci -fi stuff for TV So moving on Yeah, give
us a new Star Trek series already. Yeah, ain't
that the truth? Give it good writing don't let
JJ to and Or see encouragement touch it best
TV action adventure Arrow takes it away at 47
votes Wow with a low being person of interest
at four and the staff vote was again arrow I'm
really surprised that agents of shield is that
low But you got to consider its Like what 12
episodes in and nothing's really happened. I
think most people that would vote for agents
of shield probably would have liked arrow better
So they're probably gonna go arrow because it's
a better show that's kind of I Stopped watching
each other's a shield. I think the fifth or sixth
episode It was just it was just badly made and
the characters were uninteresting or annoying
Besides agent Colson and like the mystery that
they had just didn't I didn't really care enough
to continue with it I just started The Americans,
and that's really good. I do really enjoy that.
I know Mike, you are a big fan of that show.
Oh, yeah, I love that show. I'm a little wonky
with how season two is starting, but season one
was masterful. Only now in this day and age could
you go back and tell a story about Russian spies
in the Cold War in America. and you know these
characters Philip and Elizabeth they are technically
they're the protagonists in in the show and we
all know what happened back then we won um but
it's interesting now to go back and see what
that time was like because I wasn't well I was
born but like 1981 -82 I was still young so I
wasn't like I don't even Unless it was like Sesame
Street. I wasn't really paying too much attention
to TV or news or anything like that at that age,
but It's so interesting to see how well they
do this as a period piece television show because
they show you all this old technology I listened
to an AfterBuzzTV after show about the Americans,
and the hosts on there always ask, well they
asked this past week, where are they getting
all these old Oldsmobiles from for the show?
But no, the writing is solid, the story is great,
it's really really interesting. It's probably
one of the first... FX original series that I've
really attached myself to after the shield back
in 2002 So I've Aside from enjoying arrow immensely
and agents of shield I will say that the agent
Colson thing doesn't pay off until episode 10
Mm -hmm, and even then they give a half Taste
of it and then in the recent episode that aired
this week. They actually reveal the remaining
components So I know that coming up next they're
going With the cameos from Thor and then the
cameos from it's gonna be something Captain America
2 related but My other show that I like is the
blacklist that I keep oh, yeah And James Spader's
awesome. It's the first Spader series that I've
actually watched regularly because I've never
really cared for some of his other work, but
the blacklist is really, really interesting.
And this week it was off so NBC could premiere
that new show Believe. But this coming Monday.
It ramps up for season one because we're gonna
finally find out what Tom's deal is up until
this past Monday I Thought okay, come on just
kill Tom off already He is the weak link in the
entire show and then the end of that episode
was like Oh crap, what's gonna, what are they
gonna do now? I still think Reddington is her
father though. I still think that as well, and
I've thought that since episode one. Yep, yep.
Cause he won't answer the question either, so.
Well he did, he said no. But it was a hesitant
no. Yeah, that's true. Um, so. Best TV intros
and I'm sorry, but some of these I collaborated
with Mike with Now wait a second here. I did
vote. I know I did I did vote Yes Well, okay,
but I was the one even though I'm not a fan of
the show I was the one that told you to put in
Breaking Bad because while I don't care too much
about the show in itself I do think the theme
is very very cool. Even though it's very quick
So, yes, Breaking Bad won at 38 votes, Big Bang
3 at 30, Hawaii 5 -0 at 20, and then the other
two were at 5. Big Bang 3 won the staff vote.
Yeah, I probably could have put Breaking Bad
in the drama, but it's not currently going, so
I left it off. Yeah. Your thoughts? Yeah, I guess.
Don't know really the themes to you saying intro.
Do you mean that intro song? Yeah Yeah, the themes
the opening credits. Yeah. Okay. Um, yeah, I
mean Big Bang Theory song is fine. I mean Breaking
Bad like it's literally only a few chords, but
it's effective and it's used well I think the
three that got votes were the ones that had actual
good Will say I only put resilient aisles in
there is because I'm from Boston and it's a Boston
band that sings the over Well, it's it's their
music that opens that it's a dropkick Murphy's
so which dropping her piece on It's one of their
instrumentals. I'll I'll send you the link later
So moving on we have the best cartoon BEST CARTOON!
Yep, that does not surprise me. I can't say I'm
surprised either because the Transformers Prime
music is pretty epic. Although I'd argue even
though Ninja Turtles is somewhat using the original
and it's a little bit of a hip hop thing, it's
extremely catchy for me. For the music of it
and then the fact that the show is kind of a
nice mesh between the 2003 and 1987. Yeah Turtles
is getting better as it goes along Prime kind
of wound down this past year since it was not
necessarily being canceled, but it was being
you know series finale and Just The characters,
the animation, the CGI animation in it, the music,
again, Brian Tyler, simply amazing. Now, I will
say, and I will defend this for the longest time,
everyone, I'm one of these people that also will
complain about humans in the Transformers cartoons.
Jack, Miko, and Raph are probably the three best
humans we've ever had as far as story and character
development and what happens to them within the
series. Will definitely agree and boy the Batman
even though it came in low it did not get a fair
shake I'll say that now well her to network crap
canned it before it had a chance to actually
grow legs, you know Because they actually did
go a different route with different villains
and not I mean, yeah, they teased Ra's al Ghul
But they didn't actually play the Joker or the
penguin or the Riddler or the regular rogues
gallery. It was a lot you know Simon stag and
you know anarchy and What was it professor pig
or Something like that. Yeah. Yeah, it was professor
pig mr. Toad Anarchy their Simon stag was in
there a little bit The League of Assassins or
the League of Shadows with Lady Shiva was it
mr not mr tiger oh god what was the other ones
um monkey i forget yeah monkey that's silver
monkey or yeah yeah yeah yeah silver silver optimus
primal that's what it was any thoughts dan no
i don't watch any of the cartoons so i can't
okay all right so rounding out to the last four
Best GCRN feature. Is the top 100 countdowns
at 40 votes? And I will just run down the rest
of them. Followed by the GCRN wars tournaments
at 18 votes, the written reviews at 16, the top
10s at 15, and then the interviews at 11. I'm
really surprised the interviews did not get more
votes. Okay, I get it. The top 100 is gonna win
out, but... I'm really surprised because over
the last five years, we've done some pretty cool
interviews. Yeah, that is pretty surprising.
I'm kind of surprised, too. I mean, I would have
thought the interviews would have been higher,
but I guess it's more fun to listen to than to
interact with, whereas the rest of them are more
interaction purposes. True. So it followed, you
know, kind of. It's an exactly pretty much reverse
order for interaction purposes, too. So Yeah,
that's true So but yeah, they're definitely will
be more of all of the above. Oh Yeah Interviews
this year. It's gonna be off the skids might
be our biggest year for interviews ever Well,
I don't know about ever but it will be closed
to some other years Time will tell yes There
will be another Warriors tournament with the
bracket. That should be coming soon. And then
the top 100 countdown again later this year,
which you won't know either one of them. Any
other comments? No. Yeah, good. Best GCR and
review podcast. Alright best GC iron review podcast
votes. I was kind of surprised to see this but
Legends of the Dark Knight took it away at 23
votes and the low is powers of grayskull at 8
Yeah, the the following ones after Legends of
the Dark Knight you have from the command center
14 pixels in the animation at 11 and beyond the
night at 9 So well with Beyond the Night and
Powers of Grayskull for Powers of Grayskull the
X number of months off hiatus that we quote -unquote
planned That didn't help it and Beyond the Night
is still not in iTunes because they still refuse
to accept the damn link that I post in iTunes
jerks Yeah, it happens All right, so best GC
iron partner podcast best GCR and partner. This
is going to be interesting. Yeah, it's it's going
to be. There's there's a monumental winner and
then. Yeah, I'm just going to. It's not surprisingly
mark. Who's hooniverse 1 at 83 votes followed
by Punisher body count What's on Joe mind star
Joe's podcast and Hunnic outcast podcast? Yeah,
it's not surprising the doctor who podcast won.
Well, I think they rallied their hooniverse army
on us. Yeah We we told I told the star Joe's
and the what's on Joe mine and and the Punisher
body count to get that Punisher body count I
told them to have Frank go kill all all 12 doctors
So yeah, I I'm kind of not surprised but I am
surprised especially by the the landslide of
50 plus votes over everybody else. Yeah, I mean
it's it's 50 votes between Mark who 42 and punish
your money count So try the biggest landslide
of all all the categories So it definitely was
I can't even I yeah, I can't even But um Best
GCRN core podcast So yeah, the last category
is the best GCR in court podcast can't say I'm
surprised but Here we go Mware weekly took it
away at 37 votes followed by with the tie for
second place keep cast radio and altered geek
unlimited for 22 votes off the cuff for 19 and
the pull bag for 10 I'm surprised that GCR got
all the votes that it did because Outside of
the top 100 we had been kind of spotty Well,
you got to see it this way says we've had two
top 100s the top the top 10 top tens Yeah, and
then this all on the geek cast radio feed. So
that's right that warrants it No, no, no, I know
but I'm just I'm just saying it seemed like as
we were producing episode 41 through 59 It seemed
like a long time to me as as producing the stuff
that it took to release it But I guess I guess
we have had consistent content I think you can
get a look at it just at 2013 where people are
probably considering a great deal. That's top
100 That's what I'm saying, but that all happened
in 2013 the top tens And the top 100 happened
in 2013. Yeah, which is why I got 22 votes. Well,
it'll be no different this year with more awesome
top 100 content and more goodies that are going
to show up on this feed this year. Tons of things
are planned. That's all I will say. I'll say
I have a certain number that I want to hit by
the end of the year. Are you seven in a row?
No, wrong show. No, that would be 100. I am fully
planning on by December 31st that we hit 100
episodes. Well, we got 40 to go. If it happens.
Oh, it will happen. I'll make it happen. Just
don't use crap content. Shut up. So. Final thoughts
on the whole awards and your experience with
it. I guess we'll start with Dan. I guess the
first thing is thank the fans for voting. I mean,
there was a huge amount of turnout for a lot
of these categories. You know, it seems like
everyone was at least above 100 or so. Seems
like for most of them, there's a lot of love
spread in a lot of different areas. So that was
kind of cool. And I guess it's Yeah, it was interesting
to say the least so I hopefully next year we
can look at what we did this year on it and do
it better but I think for a first awards it was
rather successful so Mike Yeah, no, I agree I'm
in general I was really hesitant and I didn't
really take place in a lot of the category stuff
setting this up this year because I just I'm
not that into award shows. I think they're cool.
I think they're interesting, but it's not like...
I don't know. It just wasn't really my thing.
But with the pull bag taking off and getting...
The pull bag is changing. Like this year so far,
we're three months into 2014, and the show is
already going in several different directions.
So the pull bag will have... We will have comic
votes next year. I'm happy with the way it turned
out. I wish we would have gotten a little bit
more votes I'm wondering though if when we like
to advertise it like on Facebook like I know
I took like the The TV action category where
the blacklist is and I actually tagged the official
blacklist Fanpage on on Facebook. I'm wondering
if that helped at all If that kind of thing like
don't like going to the official source of not
not just a bunch of fans creating a fan page
for a show they like but the actual NBC and that
kind of stuff I'm really wondering if how much
of that contributed to the overall voting I Am
unsure I Think that the the overall experience
was pretty good I definitely have some things
I'm going to tweak for next year as far as how
it works on the site. I'm sure there'll be some
other way that we're going to come up with to
refine how things are run on the second award
show if we so choose to do it again next year
depending on user feedback. There will be a poll
on the website on the sidebar. Probably around
the time this episode's aired, asking for your
general thoughts on this whole awards experience.
Also, be sure to leave feedback on this episode
post of what you think. There'll be a link to
the awards answers in this post, so be sure to
