Brothers' ball cap? Aha! You can't watch a Warner
Brothers movie without a Warner Brothers ball

Brothers ball cap so they had it next time? Well,
uh... Here's all you have to do, folks. Just
send for this. Uh -uh. A new Warner Brothers
catalog. Use it to order your Warner Brothers
ball cap. And while you're at it, you can order
stuff like T -shirts, posters... Movie books?
Ties? That's neck ties! It's all in the catalog,
which you can get now by dialing this 900 number.
So when you get a chance, call... No, no! They

established order and everything becomes chaos.
This town deserves a better class of criminal.
And I'm gonna give it to him. Uh, Sage Orbis,
is it that time? The house party protocol, sir?
Correct. Hello and welcome to GeekCaster Radio.
This is episode 50. It only took us four years
to get here, but we are here at episode 50 and
this is going to be concluding... Our top 10
AFI GCRN style film countdowns for now. There
will be a time in the future where we will look
at some other genres, but not at this time. And
if anyone else wants to step up and do the horror
genre, please feel free to do it without me,
because I just don't give a shit. I am, of course,
one of your hosts, Steve Drew and Mike. Joining
me is Steve Megatron. Hello. Hello. Optimus Solo.
Hello. I am here with you. I'm so wrong every
time you say it. And of course, movie role Dan
is here. Hello. Hello, I am here giving a shit,
so here we go. Thank God one of us is. One of
the youngest of our network who is basically
the Roger Ebert of the network, because he likes
all the old shit. I like old shit. I like new
shit, old shit, smelly shit. Dog shit. We're
here as I said to count down GC IN's top 10 superhero
films. I want you to drop that list on a skiv.
That's so fast Yes, fast do it now. Yes before
we get there a couple things about the list in
general Especially since this is the last one.
I've had a chance to look back at all of the
other lists now a Couple things here. First of
all the most people like we've had anywhere from
four to seven of the main GCR and contributors
submitting lists as we've gone through this genre
The different genres and with this one we had
the most people we've had basically we had seven
But interestingly if you go through every movie
that got a vote For the superhero genre only
43 films received votes Which makes it the that's
the lowest out of all ten genres we've done the
closest was gangster which I think had Like 44
or 43 is right around the same number But for
the gangster we only had five people submit lists
versus seven So we had more people submit lists,
but less movies actually get voted on which means
there was some Sort of agreement as far as which
films should get voted on We also only had About
six seven eight nine ten eleven. We had there
only thirteen movies that were only on one person's
list So that kind of gives you an idea of the
genre and what kind of agreement there is amongst
us At least that only thirteen films were only
on a solo list everything else got voted on by
more than one person We also are going to have
a list today that consists of eleven films instead
of ten No, you can't do that. You're going against
your own friggin rules, dude. This is top 10.
Yeah, but if we've had ties, I haven't done anything
to break ties because I don't want to manipulate
our list at all. And we do have two ties on our
list today, so we are going to have 11 films.
Before I drop down the honorable mentions, though,
without mentioning any specific films, I just
want to go around the table and get a prediction
on... Which franchise? Will have the most appearances
within our top 10 slash 11 Marvel. No, I'm not
talking about which company I'm talking about
character Yeah, like like Batman Superman Spider
-Man X -Men Batman Spider -Man. All right, let's
go around the table since Mike is superly impatient
today Mike one only one you can only pick one
I just said Batman and spider -man to Don't care.
There's 11 fucking films record Steve I'm gonna
say Batman Dan. Yeah, I think it's Batman Just
thinking of the history of that character and
people that voted on the list Alright, well we
will see if that holds true. Everyone's voting
Batman minus full mentions list is in your window
Obviously, like I said, it's gonna be a it's
a fairly short list since there was so much agreement
on on which movies at least got voted on We're
gonna start with Dan Dan going over that list
very briefly. What what do you see that strikes
you? Honestly, the first movie that just missed
the list. I'm surprised. It's up that high Amazing
Spider -Man Uh, I I like that film. I just I
didn't think it would resonate with people that
much that kind of surprises me Talking about
batman darknut rise is not making it. I think
that's the right call The one on here that I
think that jumps out to me the most that I think
is deserving of the top 10 that didn't make it
is x2 I I think the movie kind of gets over It's
relatively forgotten because of everything that's
come after and people forget just how much that
changed the genre and how much that showed you
what you could do with the sequel for how much
it increased after the first X -Men film. I mean,
it has some great action set pieces in the beginning
with Nightcrawler. I think it's the best example
of Wolverine on screen today. Maybe that'll change
later this summer. But I love X -Men 2. And I
think it set up the franchise to go in some really
interesting places that was then destroyed in
X -Men 3 and Wolverine, unfortunately. The TMNT,
is that the cartoon or is that the live action?
I was kind of hoping that would make it... I
know it's... Maybe people don't necessarily think
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and think superheroes,
but I know that's I love that movie It holds
up so well the costumes and that are amazing
and still look great today I just love I love
the dialogue in that film. The lines are so well
written and so well delivered I know most people
probably write it off, but I was pleasantly surprised
that it got as much as it did So I'm happy to
see it that high I was kind of hoping it would
sneak in but I can understand with only ten spots
for superhero films why it wouldn't It's one
of my favorite openings ever with everyone eating
pizza still I just find that to the that's in
TMNT 2 That's in the second the second film is
where they went commercial and had to have everything
in your face and that was second one was when
they were in the store and They were and they
were like in that grocery store and they used
all the different food for fighting I thought
the first one was right, but it started off with
all the people in New York eating pizza It's
been a while since I've seen it, obviously, but
still, I do enjoy it. Not surprised Kick -Ass
didn't make it. Thank God. I don't thank God.
I think it's a really funny movie. If you don't
understand the satire, I can understand why you
wouldn't like it, but it's really meant to be
a satirical piece on violence. It's the best
Nicolas Cage performance he's done in a long
time. What else is on here? Spider -man 2002
I can understand that I don't think it has aged
all that well Maybe that franchise will show
up other places. But besides that that's really
that jumps out to me. I can't really Oh someone
actually voted for Green Lantern. I'm guessing
that was Mike, right? No, no If our IPD was a
superhero film I'd vote for that it is based
off a comic Really quick here, that's the thing.
We should have really narrowed this down and
either made this a overall superhero countdown
or made this a comic book film countdown because
that's really what I went through. from my list
when I was making my top 20. And most of the
stuff that's in the honorable mentions, I'm glad
it's there, but just some stuff just boggles
my mind that I do not see as a actual superhero
movie. Hellboy, I don't see that as a superhero
movie. I see that as a comic book film. What
are some of the other ones here? Rocketeer, comic
book. Spawn, comic book. Like, superhero to me
is Batman, Spider -Man, Superman, Iron Man, that
kind of - If you wanna just go mainstream DC
or Marvel, but there's a lot more - No, I'm not
saying it has to be mainstream DC or Marvel,
it could be other things, I'm just saying, like,
those movies to me don't scre - like, Unbreakable,
that to me is a sci -fi movie. That's not - Superhero
I think they follow the same tropes as that any
superhero movie I mean you have a lot of them
have that reluctant hero the guy who discovers
his powers and has to overcome great odds I think
they do fit in that I mean spawn was one of the
biggest superheroes of the 90s Maybe he's not
there now. I don't think his movie was very good
But and I would say hellboy the same way and
I could see the argument for crow a little bit
more But I think superhero I don't I think we
did kind of limit it to superhero. We didn't
go beyond like comic book movies in general,
which is a good thing to point out because there's
things with comic book movies in general that
you get included, like Roach Perdition or Ghost
World that weren't included for this. So it does
narrow down some. But honestly, I think of all
the lists we've done considering. What makes
a genre a superhero and what doesn't I think
this was the easiest because I don't think there's
really any decisive That's like something like
Terminator 2 where you could say it's an action
movie and sci -fi I think all the films listed
here do qualify as maybe not mystery men I guess
I guess I guess that kind of does but overall
I think I think for the most part all of them
Yeah, I think this is this is the most straightforward
genre that we've covered just about I'm really
surprised that Fantastic Four didn't make it
yet according to the honorable mentions list
at some point unless Kev you can tell us that
Rise of the Silver Surfer didn't even come anywhere
close. Well I know but I'm just saying like to
me if no one voted on Rise of the Silver Surfer
then it's not there but if many if I know I didn't
vote for it so it had to be up to the six of
you guys the rest of you guys It's going to be
interesting to see because a lot of people hate
both those films. I enjoy both of them for what
they are. Iron Man 2, I'm not surprised about
that. Blade 2, I'm not surprised. That was more...
I know Blade's a combo character and he's technically
an anti -hero. But... I don't know. I see that
as a different genre altogether. I do want to
give a couple stats out there before we go too
much further. The only honorable mention, well,
first of all, Dan mentioned that Amazing Spider
-Man was the top voted on honorable mention and
missed the list by six points. It's also the
only honorable mention that was on six out of
the seven submitted lists. So it was only left
off of one list. So I thought that was pretty
impressive. There was three films that were on
five of the lists. That's the original X -Men,
TMNT, which we just talked about, and The Crow.
Those were all on five people's list and kick
-ass was on four people's list So those were
the top as far as how many lists they appeared
on I do want to say I was a little disappointed
and I understand you know that that they've been
getting pan or that the one has been getting
pan this year and that back when all the different
Avenger type movies leading up to that film were
out that this one got the worst reviews according
to a lot of people but If you're coming up with
a top 20, I'm a little surprised that only three
people listed Thor at all. And I was also surprised
that only two people listed man of steel on their
list now I know it's new and I know a lot of
people have been hard on it But I just kind of
expected those two to show at least show up somewhere
in the top 20 on more people's lists Maybe not,
you know towards the top, but at least somewhere
in the top 20 So those were kind of my two biggest
surprises were Thor and man of steel I thought
maybe x -men the original one and the crow might
sneak in there by other now how the croats again
on five people's list i know i don't steve is
on your list is not on yours or more it was not
known as our minds okay well good than everybody
else i don't see how that's aside just i've seen
that movie several times i i don't see how that's
a superhero movie or a comic you're just crashing
today pretty much i'm old and yet uh... you know
as well as the among that's right that's right
Oh crap. As far as Thor, I think the problem
with Thor is, at least for me as a mainstream,
I mean I do delve into some of the comedy things,
but Thor for me has never been a character that
I could ever take seriously. I've said this many
times before, not only on this show and on other
podcasts that we do. Thor to me is the comedy
relief. Thor to me is superhero squad type cartoon
antics. I did not enjoy the Thor film. I will
not be seeing the dark world. And I think Thor
is not a... He's not a relatable character that
much. I mean, sure, he's an alien that comes
here from another world. I mean, I guess you
could have... Equivalent that to people who you
know came to the United States from like that
Europe or whatever else But I just I've never
seen him like I cannot relate to Thor as I relate
to certain parts of Batman or certain certain
aspects of Nightwing's characteristics or certain
parts of Even Superman's characteristics Superman's
same reason he's an alien as well But he was
raised as an American and Thor because he is
the son of a god and he's a god himself I just
cannot relate to at all I'm gonna add equivalent
to my personal dictionary shut the hell up I
think for those that I could see what you're
saying about Thor because I think that is a problem
because it is I like that movie was in my top
20 and I understand people who do you feel disconnected
with it because it's a it's a hard character
to get into it's I mean you know it's a dude
who rocks a clock across a rainbow bridge it's
it's kind of odd but yeah but there I I've kind
of always got I kind of like mythology in some
ways and that's maybe why we could get into it
and I think If you're going to get into Thor,
there are some really good comics out there that
can kind of show you that there is a really strong
seriousness to him. Like the one of my favorite
comics, which I haven't really gotten into in
a while, but was the Thor series done by J. Michael
Straczynski from like 2007. That really handled
the character with a lot of like. Great intelligence
and it really wrote the character well and Thor
is very similar to the Hulk Where he's a hard
character the right with but if you get the right
people you can get some genius material The overall
movie I think handle it decently. Well, I think
it really kind of made it susceptible to the
general audiences I think it handled kind of
the Asgardian stuff pretty well kind of where
it me things like it's not just it's the it's
not magic it's science like you know we don't
understand this so to you it's magic to us it's
science so i can kind of get away with some of
the stuff but i i completely understand people
that don't get into that movie or i think my
other issue with the film is is freaking padme
as a romantically i i have nothing against natalie
portman's acting but the whole time i was watching
the movie i was just waiting for her Doppelganger
to come out in that weird garb from episode one.
I honestly I was Between the two characters they're
between Padme and Jane or whatever the hell the
character I don't even know what the characters
name is off top my head from Thor They they seem
so similar to me and it's like oh, they're doing
this again. Yay I don't know. I just I'm not
that into Thor unless he's making me laugh Steve,
what are your thoughts on the honorable mentions?
Well after that long -winded mess Just thought
I'd throw my two cents in yeah against you Crotchety
fucker today ass bitch I Can't say I disagree
with a lot of what's on our honorable mentions
list I'm a little surprised on a few just for
the fact that At least they debut films weren't
that bad Such as like Fantastic Four. Yeah, it
was alright I mean it wasn't great, but it was
alright same thing with spider -man 2002 Amazing
spider -man. I'm kind of surprised. It's not
on the list I ranked that six in my top ten Just
because it I like that iteration a little bit
better Dark Knight Rises I did have that in my
top ten, but that was not I wouldn't have put
that in my top five by any means They had a lot
of mess with it, so I can't disagree with that
either. I'm kind of surprised X -Men 1 is not
in there, just for the fact that it was kind
of the introduction of the Marvel Universe for
the most part, next to the Spider -Man films.
And whoever put Batman Forever in Batman and
Robin, I'm truly sorry for you. I knew Forever
wasn't going to make it. Those are both mine,
by the way. I figured as much. I freely admit
I enjoy Batman Forever. I don't care what anybody
says. And Alicia Silverstone in that Batgirl
uniform was hot as hell in Batman and Robin.
Yes, Batman and Robin is one of the worst comic
book movies ever made, but it still had its good
points. It still had the Bat credit card, Bat
nipples, and George Clooney. Well, we were bad
to be fair on my personal list because there's
so many other better ones Batman and Robin was
19 and Forever was 18. So he also was the only
person to vote for x3 Yeah, that was a travesty
but but x3 what I liked about x3 was the fact
that you have friggin Frasier crane as beast
but the story The overall story, they butchered
the X team and obliterated it, and now they're
retconning everything in the Days of Futures
past. Days of Futures past, yeah. So I mean,
it was just a travesty from the get -go. Well,
so was Wolverine, but... I gotta say that I'm
pleasantly... I'm happy that one film is on this
honorable mention list that is not on our actual
top 10, because I think it's... Usually gets
way too much Love and that's Watchmen I'll think
yeah, I'm not a fan I am definitely not a fan
of that film and the problem with Watch the problem
with the Watchmen fandom Is that everybody knew
everybody that read the stuff before the movie
came out knew everything about it? That's the
problem. I have with the whole Watchmen thing.
I have no interest in any of the characters I
don't know anything about any of the characters.
I've heard that... I think... I forget which
one it is. A couple of them are supposed to be
rip -offs of Batman and Superman. I'd rather
watch a Batman and Superman movie than watch
Watchmen. I would... I would rather watch Batman
and Robin than watch... Well, you apparently
would rather watch Batman forever in X3. Just
to speak on the other side, I added in my top
20, it was number 20, and I think part of that
was because there honestly aren't... of all the
lists, there aren't really 20 great superhero
movies, to be honest, concerning how much are
out there. You hear a lot of people who love
that movie, but I don't hear much. love for Watchmen.
Most people I hear are either on your side or
find it somewhat disappointing. I think it was
either one side or the other with that film.
For me it was more so when it first came out
I was just surrounded by people that were just
like googling over it and I just thought it was
the most amazing thing ever and I just like I
saw I even saw it in IMAX. And I just was very
underwhelmed. But I can agree with you with your
statement about trying to come up with 20 great
films. Like I was forced, well, not forced, but
I ended up putting like Unbreakable as my number
20th. Now, do I think that's a fantastic film?
No, but it was either that or I don't know. I
went between Unbreakable and Rocketeers for my
number 20. To me, Watchmen has one of the great
opening and then everything else not so much.
And I think the issue with Watchmen was that
Snacks Snyder was just too beholden to the source
material and I think it kind of it's it's a really
tough subject to cross It's like Watchmen is
like the godfather It's trying to remake Godfather
basically and you have so much expectations and
I think he was just too Too scared and maybe
not the right word But he was just too apprehensive
to kind of put his own spin on it So it just
kind of was all kind of blah with how much he
kind of tried to threw out the screen and a lot
of its commentary very on superheroes. I think
works in a comic book sense but not necessarily
maybe in a movie sense because I think a lot
of it what it's commenting on a lot of it what
it's kind of getting at doesn't really translate
well to people who aren't really within the genre
that much and honestly like honestly I I wouldn't
call it I have no issue with it not making it.
I think maybe if you I think that story does
have potential and if you're going to remake
a comic book movie down the line maybe Watchmen
might be a good one to try to tackle. Will say
really quickly because it is also a comic movie
even though it was used in another list of ours
and gangster list You look at Dick Tracy Just
looking look at the designs of that film the
character designs the backgrounds the setting
That screams comic book. Every time I watch that
movie, it's like a comic book is just popping
off my screen to me. Right. But this is superheroes
and there's no, I know I understand that, but
I'm just saying, you know, hell, if fucking kick
ass is a superhero movie, then so is Dick Tracy.
Um, you know, so, and as far as the other list,
as far as actually making a list, um, Kev, you're
not a big fan of sequels. Are you in general?
I put, I put, uh, Okay, well there's a reason
why I ask is because you guys are saying it was
so hard to make the top 20 It was so hard for
me kind of like what you said a couple years
ago making your top 100 kev where you end up
with Like 120 or 130 or whatever and cutting
that was my problem was moving around where I
wanted to rank What film and what film I liked
or enjoyed better? I have like six or seven sequels
on my list, but what I'm saying is, when I go
to make my list, and what I've done for all the
genres is first I do a once over and I highlight
any film that I just think is a freaking great
film. It'd be in my top 100 films or something
like that. And I highlight that. And with some
of the genres, I had more than 20 highlighted
first time through. With superhero film. Yeah,
there's a lot of them that I like but are there
that many that I think are just like fantastic
like Top ranked movies when I did my first highlight.
I didn't have 20 So it was you know coming up
with something to fill in that that I didn't
have that initial reaction of you know Fantastic
film type thing. I'm not saying they're bad Oh,
no, no, no. I know. I know that. I'm just saying
that that for me, like thinking of 20 comic book
movies or 20 superhero movies, it was fairly
easy for me because I automatically eliminated
movies that I didn't care for or the movies that
I didn't see. For me, the only besides Man of
Steel, the only two original Donner, well, Lester.
Lester and Donner films that made it for Superman
was the original and the Lester cut of Superman
2 so it's gonna be interesting to see if The
most hated Superman films make it on this list
because they're not anywhere in the honorable
mentions Yeah I mean I considered Watchmen just
for the sheer visual and then some of the things
that they did with it and then there was some
kind of Impactful things but yeah my 20 I was
just like I was like unbreakable the Rocketeer
x2 those were things I was thinking about number
20 but like I said just nothing that was like
running away with it for me It wasn't so much
narrowing it down as it was trying to get to
20 for this list for me I think my problem was
like after I had the tops I'd say the top seven
my number seven through number one making number
eight through number 20 again figuring out where
What you know thinking about each of the movies
and where I wanted to place them and what I thought
was better than the other one and and everything
else, that was tough. But getting that top seven
and in the order that I wanted them in, that
was easy. Fair enough. All right. Well, we are
going to head to a quick hero break and we'll
come back with the countdown after this. Is it
better to be feared or respected? And I say,
is it too much to ask for both? With that in
mind, I humbly present the crown jewel of Stark
Industries Freedom Line. It's the first missile
system to incorporate our proprietary repulsor
technology. They say the best weapon is one you
never have to fire. I respectfully disagree.
I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once.
That's how Dad did it. That's how America does
it. And it's worked out pretty well so far. Your
parents' death was not your fault. It was your
father's. What are you? I'm Gotham's reckoning.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are tonight's
entertainment. All right, it's time then for
our top 10 slash 11 superhero films. And we're
going to start off with the one of the aforementioned
ties. So coming in tied for tenth. We are going
to start in 2011, fairly recent, and that is
with X -Men First Class. Coming in tied for a
tenth spot, who wants to start with X -Men First
Class? I guess I will. I enjoyed the movie up
to the point where Kevin Bacon put the damn Magneto
helmet on. I get his character as Sebastian Shaw,
and Shaw is supposed to be this badass, I'm sorry.
Just seeing Kevin Bacon with the Magneto helmet
on, just like, nope, I'm out, gone. I'm not saying
that, I'm not saying out, I'm gone, saying that
the movie's bad, I'm just like, oh my god, that
movie jumped the shark right there for me. Overall,
the story's great. I think it's absolutely amazing
what they did with Professor X and having him
come up and showing a younger side of him before.
He had his whole accident before. They shaved
his head, which they did. He did not allow them
to do. I love the Wolverine cameo in it. So hilarious.
I swear, if anyone ever replaces Hugh Jackman,
there will never be another live -action Wolverine
like what Hugh Jackman has put into that character.
I don't care. If X -Men Origins Wolverine was
bad, he still, for me, he still makes that movie
look good. At least they shut Ryan Reynolds up.
But anyway, first class, I liked it. I thought
it was really good. The effects were great. The
design was great. The story was interesting.
Wasn't too keen on them using mutants. I didn't
really know as the kids, but I see why they did
it. So, I enjoyed it. I can agree that it deserves
top ten. Was it a fact that this film was good
enough to warrant a top ten spot or was it the
fact that this came after the other two movies
that make it seem that much better? Think it
deserves it to be honest with you. I know it
does. Yeah, it does deserve it. Go ahead, Dan
I think the strengths of X -Men first -class
lies in the relationship between Charles Xavier
and Bagneto and I think it's done brilliantly
by James Mcdavoy and Michael Fassbender like
both of their performances are pretty amazing
and are like worthy of any movie not just a superhero
movie and I think they You look at the performances
by McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Those are, again,
two of the best examples of how to do a superhero
or comic book characters. I think they lived
up to what they left behind. To me, that has
so many great small moments amongst so many big
moments. One of my favorite moments in that movie
is just the moment where Charles Xavier is helping
Magneto move that gigantic satellite. and like
have and it's just a really touching moment for
a comic book movie and it was able to slow down
and Really get at the cross at like that relationship
and what drove magneto and fastbender in that
movie is just freaking amazing I Like he's just
he owns it and like I love the the magneto theme
that has it's one of the few themes and I think
the superhero movies recently that really works
also how it relates within using the Cuban Missile
Crisis within the framework of the X -Men films
and how it does reboot the franchise in an interesting
way. I mean, there are some issues. Some of the
kids aren't really well developed. The like any
like the Sebastian stuff is interesting. I mean.
He comes off as more of a James Bond villain
than maybe a superhero superhero villain, but
I liked him in that performance I liked his little
crazy submarine. I did I did think January Jones
as Emma Frost was pretty horrible She's just
not a very good actress. She looks fine, but
she's she's not the greatest and I think it really
melded, like Bryan Singer who produced it, and
Matthew Vaughn who directed it, they have a really
solid understanding of the characters, and I
think they know what makes those characters work.
And I think it's a really strong cast of really
great actors, and I really love First Class,
and I do think X -Men 2 is a little bit better,
but I'm kind of surprised it's on this list,
but I think it's well -deserving. I think number
10 is a good spot for it. What about you, Steve?
What are your thoughts on X -Men First Class?
That film I actually Really liked how they kind
of introduced everybody for the first time and
kind of did more into their backstory And also
kind of explaining some of the other various
brotherhood or Xavier's group It was a nice foundation
and then you get to see a lot of the technology
and a lot of the things that would come later
on, even though it didn't quite make sense with
X3. But again, X3 was a travesty. And then I
also love the scene where they go to talk to
Wolverine and he's like, screw off. But the film
overall, I'd say that it's... very deserving
of being in the top 10 on any of the X films.
It was voted on by six of the seven members and
the lone person who left it off their list is
here. Dan? So Mike, did it not deserve to be
in the top 10? No, it deserves to be in the top
10. But like for me, it wasn't. It wasn't Batman
and Robin level. You wanted X3. You did vote
on X3. Shut up. I did like x3 that's the like
I've liked all of the x -men movies including
Wolverine origin Which was good for me shut up
First class was there a certain I guess you could
call them prequel films that you can tell that
people will enjoy and that I would enjoy But
and I did enjoy the film. I didn't feel like
I felt like I had Other films that were better.
Even if I put this at number 20 Or number 19
or whatever it's still I Injured like this isn't
a film I have ever I've watched this exactly
one time Through a red box rental and I've never
watched it again. It's not that I dislike it
It's just okay. So your mission for the rest
of the 2013 is to get x3 and x -men first class
and watch them back -to -back and then report
back to us. No. Denied. I tried. What's next?
What did it tie with? All right. Also coming
in at our 10th spot, we're going to leave the
2000s. And don't worry, we'll come back to them.
But we're going to go all the way back. I should
only have to say the year for this one, really.
We're going to go back to 1989. Batman. Or Batman.
Superman 4. That was 87, get your gears right.
Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger,
Batman from 1989 coming in tied at the 10th spot
with X -Men First Class. Batman 1989 is also
the first film we're talking about here that
appeared on all seven people's lists. So it's
unanimously selected amongst the seven people.
did rank it number 10 still. So, I mean, nobody
had it super high. I'll go down the line here.
I had it ranked, I think about 12th. Steve, you
had it about eight. I was at nine. Nine. Mike,
you were about 14, 15, somewhere in that range.
Just same as Dan. Same as JT. Birdman Dodd had
it ranked number three. And Mr. Wilson had it
about eight or nine too. A lot of people had
it kind of in the middle of road 15. Some people
had eight or nine and Birdman had it up at number
three. So who wants to start with Batman 1989?
Steve, you love the Joker. Yeah, but not in the
pale moonlight. This film, I really like the
introduction. I think that Tim Burton really
kind of knocked it out of the park here, kind
of setting the tone for the future of superhero
films. unfortunately Joel Schumacher had to make
it a joke but um no this film introduced a lot
of the Batman tech in real world application
to some extent not quite like the Nolan verse
but it's our first dark version of Batman on
screen and you get a really twisted Jack Nicholson
playing the Joker, and you get Keaton playing
Batman, who actually was a better Batman than
Bruce Wayne. But it was a nice introduction to
Batman in modern day. I mean, it's hard to beat
that as far as the previous four films were before
the Dark Knight trilogy. I think, too, what Batman
1989, at least for me, To me, the impact is huge
that this film had. This film, at least in my
growing up and coming to terms with films, was
the first superhero film that made me take notice
and that made me think, you know, wow, they can
actually make these into actual live -action
films that for me are... Acceptable believable
up to that point. This is the best costuming
and best Effects I had seen in any type of superhero
type film. I thought the bat -suit was was pretty
well done Jack Nicholson obviously is perfect
as the Joker So I mean for me it had a big impact
as far as being something that that I hadn't
quite seen done like this and that made me think
wow this You know the sky's the limit obviously
it's been reinvented, you know, the wheels been
reinvented numerous times in this genre especially
recently but For the time to me that had a big
impact on what would come later on Dan. What
do you think about Batman 1989? I think if anything,
you got a credit Batman 89 for probably giving
us the Batman animated series So that alone kind
of makes it to the ring for this Along the same
sentiment like you think about what came before
I mean you have to credit Superman but up to
this point like Superman 2 was long gone What
was going to be the next thing and it was Batman
in 89 and I think it reinvented the character
for a lot of people and it's at that point for
those who weren't reading in comics like Adam
West was still everyone's Batman and now that
changed and they show that Batman can be a grown
-up character and to the world that film is in
is great. It's very, you know, gothic. It does
feel like a comic book. The theme song is great.
I still, probably my favorite Batmobile is Batman
1989. Some of it doesn't hold up all that well.
There are some little bit questionable things
about, you know, who gets let into the Batcave
and some things that don't age perfectly, but
considering the time, I think that's something
you have to consider when doing these lists.
in this movie. It is a very important movie for
comic books and I think if without that success
who knows what would come after and I think that
was a movie people were chasing ever since until
probably the 2000s. People were trying to be
the next Batman 1989 and nothing really accomplished
that probably until maybe spider -man or x -men
were able to kind of get to that level So very
well deserving to be on the list speaking and
kind of the same sentiment giving some backup
to what you're just saying And I am reading a
little bit of this, but uh, yeah, you definitely
mentioned the Batman animated series and kind
of establishing the modern -day superhero film
genre. This is from Bruce Timm. He said, our
show would never have gotten made if it hadn't
been for the first Batman movie. Tim Burton also
said, ever since I did Batman, it was like the
first dark comic book movie. Now everyone wants
to do a dark and serious superhero movie. I guess
I'm the one responsible for that trend. I guess
that's... We shouldn't expect anything else from
Tim Burton, but uh Some afi things it was nominated
for afi is 100 years 100 movies It was also nominated
for their 100 years 100 thrills The joker came
in as number 45 villain on their 100 heroes and
villains batman came on at number 46 hero They
didn't get a quote on the list, but have you
ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight
was nominated It was also nominated for 100 years
of film scores and in a weird sense, I guess
because they didn't have Comic book slash superhero
as a genre it got nominated for the top ten fantasy
film list, but it did not make the list Mike
I remember the I remember all the ad campaigns
for this movie Anybody who is Who has seen this
or remembers the old ad campaigns one of the
best ads was the diet coke ad? where Alfred's
calling the corner store No, this this black
car you won't miss I remember the McDonald's
ads. I remember everything about this movie.
It was just so great the movie itself. Yes. There
are certain flaws. Yes Jack Napier did not kill
Thomas and Martha Wayne we get it But I think
the reason why they went down that road for the
storytelling with that this particular version
of the origin Is because of the fact that it
had to be relatable to mainstream audiences Like
Dan said maybe and not a lot of people were reading
the comics back then maybe people didn't know
it was Joe chill that killed Thomas and Martha
Wayne You know so having Nicholson's character
kill them or and they didn't really even do it
justice honestly now that I'm thinking about
it because they did it in a flashback way where
it's somebody It's some other parents and some
kid named Jimmy They they told it in a weird
backwards ass way, but it wasn't even really
Bruce Wayne's parents, but you still got the
the gist of hey this kid's parents died and that
put him on the path to becoming Batman. He goes
all crazy and takes painkillers for the rest
of his life so he can actually be the goddamn
Batman. The movie itself I thought was great.
I love the acting. I find it so funny and I always
make this joke. Michael Keaton from Batman to
a Ken doll. Nice. He's had a lot of good run
in between those. Think of the actors that were
around in 1989. Think of the actors that portrayed
villains. People like Gary Busey as Mr. Joshua
in Lethal Weapon. People like Hans Gruber in
Die Hard. Who the hell, other than Jack Nicholson,
could have pulled off the Joker the way he did?
Nobody. Just nobody. Danny Elfman's music was
amazing. I agree with Dan. It's still... My favorite
live action Batmobile. It's just an awesome,
awesome film. All right. And like I said, it
was voted on by all of us. It'll be a while in
the countdown before we get to another film that
was on all seven lists. But moving away from
our tie here into our number eight spot, we're
going to go back to the only film that will reach
our countdown from the decade of the 70s. And
that is 1978. original Superman That was on a
second. You said this was top 11. So this is
technically number nine, right? Well, there's
there's two different ties. So technically this
is number eight. Anyway Superman the original
1978 coming in at the next spot. It was on everybody's
list except for Birdman's and it is also our
first case of somebody's top film Being stricken
down. So JT will be disappointed that this is
not number one. I guess He's gonna and he'll
kill get over it. Everybody else Canadian jokes
Exactly. Everybody else. Hey, okay. Hold on before
we really get into this really quickly I cannot
believe this was not on Mike Dodd's list because
he is a huge Superman fan. I have to agree. I
Don't get that like what is his number one favorite
Superman movie Superman for? Wait and see I guess
Superman five a new hope Mr. Wilson had this
at number 11 JT like I said had this at number
one Dan had it at number four Mike you had this
about seven, I think eight seven or eight Steve
you had this at 18 and I had this at 19 So Dan
you had it ranked the highest among us so you
can start on this one. I think you It's kind
of what made superhero movies Possible really
I mean it is the first real superhero movie ever
to hit the big screen and it was done. I think
really well Some of it does like some similar
with Batman a 1989 some of it doesn't age all
that well You know seeing Superman running next
to a train looks more like Kermit the Frog than
it does the Man of Steel But overall, I think
it's still a really great way to tell an origin
story it kind of set kind of the standard and
If people would follow I think uh as jor -el
martin brando was Really, you know did a really
great job I mean he was giving little effort
but brando with little effort still pretty solid
and To the I think that the crux of that movie
and what makes that movie really work is christopher
reeve Who's still to this day the best? Super
superhero or superman and I think maybe the best
superhero in general like he hits superman really
well and he his clark hent makes you actually
believe people won't realize they're the same
people. He's got really great comedic timing
with that character. We kind of talked more in
depth regarding it within the MR episode, but
I think it's an important movie and I just love
the way it told the Superman story and brought
people into that world. I think the effects overall
were... Pretty impressive for the time. Sometimes
you don't believe a man can fly, but there are
occasions where you're like, oh, that can actually
seem kind of believable. And I love Gene Hackman
as Lex Luthor. Yes, his plot is kind of ridiculous.
Yes, turning back the Earth is. Possibly one
of the dumbest things in superhero movie history,
but still it's only dumb when you do it twice
in a cut That was never seen by most people.
I think it's kind of dumb no matter what I mean,
you would basically kill everybody on earth if
you did that But anyways it I love that movie.
I think it's great. I'm glad it's on the list
Lex Luthor was nominated for the 100 years 100
villains, but did not make the list Superman
made it at number 26 for heroes Can you read
my mind was nominated for a hundred years a hundred
songs? I'm here to fight for truth justice and
the American way was nominated for quotes The
film score was nominated and it was also like
the last one that was nominated for top ten fantasy
films But did not make the list. Yeah, I should
have made the score because that's pretty amazing
as well The film score was nominated but never
made the list. There's something wrong with these
AFI people, just like there's something wrong
with the MMPAA. Because, holy crap, John Williams'
score, John Williams' theme, specifically for
Superman, everybody, whether you're a Superman
fan or not, everybody knows every single note
of that song as soon as you hear it. I don't.
Well, you're not a superhero fan, so... No, I'm
just not a Superman fan. Anyway. Steve, what
do you think about Superman coming in here? I
think it's a necessary version of Superman to
be in the list. I think that granted it's not
I mean I just recently saw Man of Steel which
I probably would have put in my top 20 but I
would say that this is the most pure Superman
like as far as going to the lengths of, you know,
saving people and all this other stuff. So whereas
the other Superman doesn't. But yeah, I think
that just the way that this whole film, I mean,
granted, it's dated, but it's still I think it
still holds up fairly well other than the fact
that you can tell it's made in the 70s from hairstyles
and clothes. That's true. Mike and Christopher
Reeve will always be the best live -action film
Superman As far as other live -action Superman
specifically television I have other favorites
But as far as films go Christopher Reeve is the
best he will always be the best As far as the
film itself Dan does have a point Technically
if you did do that to the earth you'd be killing
everybody so technically Superman almost was
a mass murderer in this movie Just to save Lois
right yeah in hell But the combination with the
score the acting all that stuff and just the
events that happen and again, this is one of
those movies that It truly made most of us believe
that a man could fly, and it was just a damn
good representation. So yeah, Superman, very
awesome. All right. Well, let's move on then,
because the next film only beats Superman by
one point. And we saw JT's number one film go
down. We're going to see his number two film
go down with this one. Next look we'll get over
it next on our list We're going to stick kind
of staying in the in the past here before we
we jump to the future for most of the rest of
the list and that is in 1980 or Superman 2 Now
I have to ask which cut was his number one number
two because I specifically cited in my list the
Lester cut I Considered them all the same. They're
not the same. Yes You cannot, you cannot consider
both... Everyone else just put Superman 2, they
didn't put which cut, so they all fell into the
same thing. Well, they should have. Because when
someone says Superman 2, I think of the Lester
cut. So JT's gonna have to email in or comment
on this episode and define which one he put as
his number 2. For me, the Lester cut is just
far superior. I enjoyed it more. It was the original
theatrical version of the film And again, we
didn't get the Donner cut for 30 years until
30 years after or so The whole degrees I'm not
trying to interrupt you or whatever, but you
are in the minority with that opinion, right?
Well, no, not necessarily The thing about Superman
2 is it shows you that Clark is becoming more
human over time, like he wants to give up his
power, like he just doesn't know what to do.
He's a lost little boy in this movie. And Christopher
Reeve played that to a T, even when he went back
and defeated the bully at the end. It was just
an overall great movie. I love how he tricked
the Kryptonians at the end. I do think that the
Kiss of Forgetfulness is one of the lamest plot
points ever, but other than that, I still really
enjoyed the original theatrical cut of Superman
2. Alright, going through how everybody ranked
this, there was two people that did not have
this on their list. That would be me and Steve.
So I guess we won't have as much to say about
this. It was only on five people's list. Not
that that's... Small amount Dan. How do you think
about superman 2 you had it in your second ten?
Yeah, I did a 13 I kind of I I know a lot of
people like superman 2 more than superman, but
I kind of do the opposite I think superman's
a tighter film and regarding the cuts I don't
think they're nearly as different as Mike does
I I think there's as much difference there's
more difference between the directors cut a Blade
Runner there and the regular version than there
is a Donner and the lesser cut yeah, there's
some differences there and some But overall,
I don't think they're all that different, or
all that better or worse than each other. I think
they both have their own issues. I think they
both have their own positives. So I just went
Superman 2, because I don't see a huge difference.
Regarding Superman 2, similar to the first Superman,
how Superman 1 showed us how to do an origin
film, Superman 2 showed you how, when you have
that character... establish how you can go further
with it and kind of increase the action. Bring
in a great villain like Zod who's awesome. I
think Terrence Stamp as Zod is freaking amazing.
He kind of owns that character and he's just
so hammy and so fun. The action in that is pretty
great and the sequence in New York. Hackman in
that he has really no place but he still works
and seeing him and Terrence Stamp go toe -to
-toe is a lot of fun. I think it's deserving.
I kind of wish Superman was a little higher than
Superman 2, but I think for most people since
they saw Superman as kids, they're probably going
to gravitate towards that movie more because
it's quicker, it's faster, it's more exciting.
It's interesting because like I said, Steve and
I only voted on Superman, so we obviously had
it ranked higher than Superman 2. Mike had Superman
higher than Superman 2. Dan, you had Superman
higher than Superman 2. JT had Superman 1 and
Superman 2. second. It was really Dodd and Wilson
because Dodd had Superman 2 in the fifth spot
and Michael Wilson had it in the sixth spot.
So they really elevated Superman 2's status where
they had the original. Well Dodd didn't even
vote on the original Superman and Wilson had
the original Superman quite a way down on his
list. But most people were in agreement that
Superman is better than Superman 2. It was just
how high two people ranked Superman 2. They kind
of edged it out by one point over the original
Superman. Mike other thoughts or reactions to
what Dan said? No, I mean I Will say that the
whole the differences between the two cuts is
With the Donner cut there's more Jor -El stuff
Than what's in the original theatrical cut and
then there is the whole Slightly twisted different
way that they get out of the Phantom Zone. It's
just it's they're basically dual side Superman
2 between the two cuts is a dual -sided mirror
It just reflects back on each other and it's
one of those things where one of the main sticking
points for me Why I enjoy the theatrical cut
better is because I don't like seeing the same
damn plot and Two movies I've said this before
I said this on the Superman spotlight on M wire
You ended Superman 1 with him reverse rotating
the earth to turn back time If the Donner Cut
had been allowed to be the theatrical cut, you
would have had the exact same thing... as it
stands. I know for a fact that Donner wanted
to end Superman 1 differently than the way it
ended, the way we got it, but I just... Lester
superior Donner inferior work regarding that
real quick like I think I mentioned in that episode
but the point of the Donner cut is that the beginning
of it is supposed to be rewriting the end of
Superman 2 so it It's yes, it's repeating it
movie. Yeah, it's supposed to be rewriting the
end of Superman. It's it it's Donner's cut of
Superman 2 is kind of Superman like 1 .5 and
Superman 2 put together. So right. Yeah, so that
that That's why it's repeating because the idea
is like that never happened after Superman one.
It's like he gives you the Superman kiss So you
forget it happened. This is what it should have
happened. And then okay, that's gonna go at the
end but yeah, anyways, I Wanted to mention that
Steve any thoughts on Superman 2? Honestly, I
think that having Superman 1 in there was sufficient
Don't think the need for Superman 2 to be in
there was really needed Yeah, I'm actually somewhat
shocked that we've had two Superman films in
the top ten just because I obviously I've stated
my distaste for the Superman as the whole franchise
goes but however, I I do know or I don't know
but because it could not have been voted on at
all, but Have a feeling there's gonna be a double
shot of Batman coming up or a triple shot We'll
have to wait and see coming in next we're gonna
get out of the 70s and 80s for the rest of the
countdown Coming in at number six is the only
film that was only voted on by four people. It's
the only film that was able to get enough votes
from just four people to make our list. Everything
else was on. There was, like I said, Superman
two was on five of the people's lists. Everything
else was on six or seven lists. So coming in
next is 2013. Wait, that's this year. That would
be Iron Man three. What the fuck now? Another
number one bites the dust Mike's number one film
has gone down here Now we should say, you know,
obviously it's a 2013 film. So that could have
played into either More people voting for it
because it's on their mind and current or less
people voting for it because maybe they haven't
seen it yet or it hasn't hasn't had time to resonate
We had Iron Man 3 coming in next and Mike since
you had it ranked number one of the best superhero
film of all time. So what is next? Is this X
number six or number seven? What number are we
actually up to here? This is, I'm calling six.
Okay. Um, but since you had it as your number
one superhero film of all time, defend yourself.
Iron Man 3 isn't a set up movie, it isn't an
origin movie, it's a continuation from the events
that happened from Avengers. It's shown, like
in Iron Man, we saw Tony Stark... the billionaire
playboy drunk jerk that would do stupid stuff.
After the events of the Avengers... What takes
places are in Iron Man 3 is he has to actually
be an adult and be mature and he has to deal
with psychological issues of going through a
black hole in the Avengers The soundtrack score
from Bryan Tyler. I can't praise that enough.
It's it's great. It's very emotional music Yes,
there are certain things about Iron Man 3 that
some people might find questionable like I know
I know there's a lot of backlash towards having
that kid Harley in there but I didn't find it
annoying at all I just like the story that they
told in that because the other thing is you got
to see a further friend The the furthering of
the friendship with road with roadie and tony
and I just I enjoy it overall It's a movie. I
could watch multiple times. I mean pretty much
I like all three of the iron man movies i've
never said that I haven't liked all three of
them Um, but iron man 3 was a damn damn good
movie and it told a damn interesting story Yeah,
as I said mike had it ranked number one. I had
it number nine steve had it number four And Mike
Wilson had it number two actually it was not
on Dan's Dodds or JT's list Yeah, Dodd hates
that movie now. He's like he's like on Facebook.
Oh the more I think of Iron Man 3 the more I
actually hate it anyways, Dan why not Iron Man
3? Honestly, I I don't know a lot. I like Iron
Man 3. I gave it a pretty positive review. I
just think they're better films out there and
I wouldn't I I do agree it's better than Iron
Man 2 and I love the first Iron Man but I don't
know I just when I think great comic book movies
it doesn't really come into my mind it I think
because it's so soon I think part of it too is
kind of just feeling kind of a with the Marvel
franchise as a whole just kind of they all are
starting to run together a little bit just with
how many of them there are and I thought that
they're not great in their own right but I just,
I felt there were better movies out there and
I don't really, I don't see Iron Man 3 as a movie
that's really gonna be all that remembered a
great years down the line as compared to some
other movies. I did love it. I love Shaded Black's
direction. I did like how... uh, he kind of melded
his Kind of sensibilities within that framework.
I love what they did with the mandarin and a
lot of people don't like that But I think it's
freaking awesome and I wish more marvel would
do more things like that and take more chances
But I don't know part of it too. I always feel
a little uncomfortable Ranking a movie that just
came out amongst movies i've seen countless times
before And i've only seen iron man 3 once so
I i'm a little hesitant to kind of compare that
to something that i've you know have seen like
x -men first class a billion times and i don't
think it's necessarily a fair comparison so maybe
if i did this list five years down the line maybe
i would put it on there but at this point i just
i'm not ready to say it's top 20 worthy yet i
think you have a point though too as far as um
you know thinking of the genre overall um some
weight has to be put into the the impact or you
know what unique quality one film has to separate
itself from the other. And we kind of, you know,
X -Men First Class kind of revitalized, you know,
that franchise after, well, outside of Mike's
opinion, after a couple kind of... bust movies
for the X -Men franchise. You know, Batman 1989,
we talked about that impact. Superman, we talked
about that impact. I feel like with the last
one and this one, I don't necessarily see that
special quality in Superman 2 or Iron Man 3 that
maybe separates it from the rest. I did enjoy
Iron Man 3. Like you said, I liked it a little
bit more, just barely a little bit more than
Iron Man 2. But yeah, maybe not the impact that
we've seen from some of the other films. Steve,
what do you think about Iron Man 3? Um, I think
that it was Not as good as the first one and
I do agree it does continue the events of the
Avengers but I think it involves the character
a little bit more Iron Man 2 was just kind of
a setup for Avengers. So it felt kind of flat
and weak Whereas Iron Man 3 was much better.
I Do have a few nitpicks with it but Overall,
I can't argue that it was a really good entertaining
film and deserved to be in the top 10. Fair enough.
Mike, any other thoughts on Iron Man 3? The way
I look at Iron Man 3, it's a character journey
for Tony Stark because he's throughout Iron Man
1, 2, 3 and Avengers, you see like he is... Right
now, Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr., he is the
face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it
was built around him and the original Iron Man
in the first place, but with Iron Man 3, it's
just the story is good, he has to go outside
the box, he gets attacked at his home. Uh, yeah,
I... I still have reservations of how they actually
treated the Ben Kingsley Mandarin character part.
but seeing what actually happens with the rest
of it. And as far as everybody's thinking, oh,
it's too new or what? I don't I don't believe
in that. I don't consider like if I was going
to consider time, I would say that Superman two
is too goddamn old to be on this list that, you
know, it just time doesn't make any damn difference
to me when it comes to movies. It really doesn't.
Do you really think like Iron Man three is really
going to be up there for you five years from
now? Like, do you honestly think like if you're
going to? Yeah. Okay, well it might not be number
one, but it'll it will at least be at least in
my top five I guarantee it. I enjoyed it that
much and plus I saw it twice in the theater,
so granted it was free, but You know it's a damn
good movie It really really is you have to look
at the way I'm looking at this film is The psychology
of Tony Stark and what that man has gone through
to get where he got in Iron Man 3 I'll say this
for later because I think we might talk about
it, but I would argue that that development is
stronger in other films, but I don't want to
go too further because I'm pretty sure we'll
probably be talking about that movie again. For
the record, all films in Mike's top six came
out in the last five years. So obviously dates
have some type of impact on his list. I'm not
saying good or bad. Anyway. Let's go on to a
franchise that has not been heard of yet in our
top 10 for our number five pick. I'm going with
five here. The film made it onto six of the seven
people's lists. We're going back a few years
to 2004, and that would be Spider -Man 2. So
Spider -Man 2 coming in at the fifth spot. Not
on Steve's list. It was on my list, fairly low.
Mike, you had it at number 10. 11. I'm looking
at my list right now. It's number 11. X2 is number
10. You gave me a different list then. Dan, yours
is number 3. It was number 11 on JT's list. It
was number 4 on Birdman Dodd's list. And it was
number 4 on Michael Wilson's list. So a lot of
people are ranking it high. None ranked it higher
than you, Dan. So why don't we start with Spider
-Man 2 for you? I'd still think this is by far
the best part I meant movie it unlike the first
Spider -Man movie. I think it ages really well
It has a dr. Octopus I never thought that character
would work an actual big -screen adaptation,
but it does and Sam Raimi really uses his like
sensibilities was like a horror director well
with the game that Dr. Octopus's arms also with
that movie every action set piece has great character
development and I think that's the one movie
that really nails the story of Peter Parker and
Has all that comic book action along with it.
It's all about building that character building
that struggle You know the great power comes
great responsibility is never better shown than
that movie It has one of my favorite action set
pieces of all time with the train sequence I
love how that's handled and how it and how it
escalates further and further. I Love the performances
in that, you know, you have JK Simmons. Obviously,
it's JJ JJ Jonah Jameson I think Toby McGuire
probably gives his best performance as Peter
Parker. I know a lot of people have Kind of grown
this since like Spider -Man 3 that seems to be
a new Testament that like he's not a good peter
parker. He's kind of too whiny, but I don't really
agree with that I think he fits the character
well in the second film spider -man 3 notwithstanding
also loved how they handled the Mary Jane -Peter
Parker relationship and how he kind of deals
with losing his powers and how that affects him.
Yes, it's a trope that's done a lot in comic
book movies, the guy who loses his powers, but
it's handled really well. It blends a lot of
great comic book stories from Spider -Man's lore
and puts them together in an interesting way.
Special effects are really well handled. Alfred
Molina is great as Dr. Octopus. What else can
I say? And I think it kind of, again, showed
how great a sequel can be. Like I think it kind
of, in a way, Spider -Man followed what Superman
did by showing how great its origin can be and
expanded upon it further in Superman 2, Spider
-Man 2, because I love the action. I just, I
don't know. To me, I love the score. One of the
best comic book scores of this last decade, in
my opinion, so. Think it's I love it I know I
feel spider -man 3 has kind of heard it in a
lot of ways because it's been that movie so bad
that people just seem to view that movie it's
not as good as I know I think it is but Steve
what about you because you had a spider -man
The original spider -man on your list you had
amazing spider -man you left spider -man 2 off
is it not as good as those other two? For me
a lot of the Superhero films I find that the
first film is the better one out of the many
Occasionally I find one of the sequel films to
be To my liking but The rest of that spider -man
trilogy while I will say that spider -man 2 did
add some growth I Just I didn't like the rest
of the tubby McGuire spider -man verse Fair enough
What about you, Mike? Well, Spider -Man specifically,
going back and looking at it now, I am so much
happier with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker
Spider -Man. Going back and watching any of the
Spider -Man movies now, I don't have the love
for them that I did when they first came out.
Spider -Man 2, as Dan said, is a great film,
specifically because they were able to pull off
Doc Ock very well. Alfred Molina just sells the
performance on that. It was absolutely awesome.
For Spider -Man 3, I know we're not really talking
about that, but Dan brought it up, and I enjoyed
Spider -Man 3 for what it was. Do I think that
Emo Peter is a lame -o? Yes. Do I think they
used too many villains? Yes. But overall, it
did kind of continue slash end the story. At
this point, I'm more interested to see what they
do with their current franchise with Amazing.
But Spider -Man 2 overall, it's a good film.
If you compared it to other twos like X -2 or
Iron Man 2 or, you know, Superman 2, obviously,
you know... It depends on who you would ask,
but I did enjoy the movie. I thought it was interesting
when I first saw it. Alright, then we will move
into our top half of our list here. Starting
with also a fairly recent film. Coming in at
number four is 2011's Captain America. Now Captain
America was on six people's lists. It was not
on Mike's list Dodd had this at number 17. That
was the lowest ranked besides Mike who left it
off. Mr. Wilson had it at number nine Dan had
it at seven Steve and I both had it at number
five and JT had it at number four So the three
of us were pretty close here with Captain America
coming in at number four I personally As far
as the films leading up to The Avengers, you
know, I'd like basically all of them except for
I can't speak to the Incredible Hulk because
I didn't see it As still just don't have any
interest in seeing it. But uh, you know, I like
the iron the first two Iron Man films I liked
Thor as I stated before And I really enjoyed
Captain America. I thought that was that's really
done. Well It was the first time You know, I'd
seen him Captain America as a character on the
big screen. I don't know if he has ever represented
before that or not. But I just really enjoyed
learning about the character and then the way
they did it and the kind of the historian in
me like that aspect of the film. So I really
enjoyed Captain America. Surprised that it's
as high as it is on our list. Surprised that
it appeared on six different people's lists when
things like Man of Steel and Thor and stuff like
that didn't even come close. So surprised by
the unity and the love for Captain America that
I saw across the board. I'm happy for it, a little
surprised that it's this high. Steve, how did
you like Captain America? Surprisingly, I liked
the film more than what I thought. I would say
in the Marvel cinematic universe, the part of
their phase one, so to speak, I like that second
to the Iron Man film. I like the creation of
the super soldier and then how it kind of ties
into shield. Starks' father and then Thor. I
mean, it's kind of, if you think about it, it's
tied to all the films. It's basically the ultimate
prequel to all the rest of the Marvel cinematic
universe. So it kind of adds a lot of depth into
things to come in various other Marvel films
for the end of phase one and beginning of phase
two. Yeah, I definitely agree with that Dan you
had it ranked in your top ten So are you surprised
that it's in our top ten? Is it should it be
in our top ten? I'm not surprised in the top
ten. I'm surprised. It's up this high but I Do
like that movie a lot. I I what I love about
that, too I should have mentioned this with Iron
Man 3 but what I do like about Iron Man 3 is
that it it does allow kind of Shane Black to
put a little bit of his own stamp but to me the
one comic book movie the more Marvel phase one
movie or that really feels like it allowed its
director to kind of go his own way was Captain
America. It has that like almost Raiders of the
Lost Ark feel. It's so kind of outlandish with
some of the vehicle design and it kind of hearkens
back to all those great serials of the past,
similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is
not surprising because Joe Johnson wants to be
Spielberg. I love Chris Evans as Captain America.
Some of the action in that is really fantastic.
I love how it kind of fits in a framework of
like a World War II movie. Like a classic World
War II film with all the different characters,
with that team. I love the montage in the middle
of it with them going across the World War II
and how that fits together. One thing too I love
in Captain America is the uniform of Captain
America. In the first film. I love that so much
more than the one in the avengers. It just looks
More practical if you can want to say practical
But I also love how it kind of combined how it
made the legend of captain america How he started
off as this like usa usa propaganda piece and
had to prove himself as a hero I liked how that
kind of transitioned and how they kind of were
able to Bring in like that costume and make it
work. Um, and also another pretty solid score
too for that for that movie But yeah, so happy
i'm surprised to tie but i'm happy it's in the
top 10 Yeah, I agree. Um, so tfg and mike, uh,
you left it off your list explain yourself I
do enjoy captain america first avenger I just
didn't think of it at the time when I made the
list. Um It's a great movie, I will say, when
they first announced the film. I'm thinking,
wait, no, Chris Evans is the Human Torch, dammit,
he's Johnny Storm, how can he also be Captain
America? And I know that they're going to eventually
reboot Fantastic Four and they're probably not
going to get him or Michael Chiklis back to do
Human Torch or Ben Grimm the thing, but... Enjoy
Captain America. I think it's a great film. I
love how it ties Howard Stark in Stories great.
I think it's interesting to look at some of Tommy
Lee Jones's films and see How much of a backseat
he can take and not be the star even though he
kind of is in this movie Because you know, normally
you see a Tommy Lee Jones film. He's at he's
top build in this one. He really wasn't it was
like hey Agent K is showing up in World War II.
And again, speaking of agents, why is Agent Smith
wearing a red skull? I like Hugo Weaving as an
actor, don't get me wrong, but every role he
has, three major roles that he's done that I
know of, they all feel so similar between Agent
Smith, Megatron, the voice of Megatron, and Red
Skull. Sure, Red Skull has a German accent, but
I don't know, it just... It just felt strange
to me with him as that character, but the film
overall, I agree with Dan. It's very Raiders
of the Lost Ark -esque, especially with trying
to find the Tesseract and everything else, and
it was damn good. I see why Dan prefers the...
Now, when you say the early uniform, you don't
mean the USO uniform. You mean when he has the
jacket on, right? Yeah, like the battle uniform,
the one that... Right. Oh, okay. I just wanted
to make sure. The USO uniform, I thought it's
more of a joke, I think. I think it's kind of
funny how they use that. The jacket uniform,
I liked it. I thought it was interesting. I thought
it was cool, but I see what they're doing now.
Having to bring him into the future and having
to use the current one that they're using. But
overall, no. I'm happy that Captain America made
the list. Again, like Dan, I'm kind of surprised
that it made it this far up. Yeah, for sure.
And leaves us wondering about what's left. Let's
get to it. Number three just edging out Captain
America by two points. Our number three film,
again, no vote for TFG1 Mike, but it's 2005's
Batman Begins. Let me just start off really quickly.
I've said this many times before. For me, the
origin of Batman happens in animated form with
Mask of the Phantasm. That is the origin that
I enjoy for Batman. I only have one thing to
say to you. Well, hold on, hold on. The reason
why Batman Begins did not make my list is because
I only really enjoy the back half of the movie
once he puts the cowl on. The first half of the
movie I just don't care for. From the man who
voted for five Batman films, not including Batman
Begins. I don't care for the beginning part of
the movie. I don't care to see Qui -Gon Jinn
training Batman. Anyways. I'm serious. It was
on six of our lists. For myself I had it ranked
number four Steve had it number ten or eleven.
Excuse me Dan you had it like a nine I believe
JT six dot seven and Wilson eight So most of
us actually had it in our top Ten or eleven Dan
what you were gonna say something. I was like
Just with Mike I gotta admit Mike you're your
own man. I mean there's no doubt about that Though
I guess you don't like the first half so that
means do you like all Batman and Robin if you
don't like the first half of Batman and begins
is that I'm understanding correctly. The whole
point of Batman Begins is the first half of the
movie is you have to show him how he becomes
Batman. I did not care for that story. I did
not care for the storytelling of that. I prefer
seeing the man in the suit for the movie. You
know, sure, you can have him out of the suit
as Bruce Wayne and have him doing certain things.
I just felt that... The first half of the movie
for me just drags on and on and on and on and
on it's like People always complain about the
Dark Knight rises of oh, how did he get? How
did he get from the top of the cave all the way
back to Gotham? Well, you know How the hell did
he? Go away for eight years nine or whatever
however the hell many years he was gone and People
realized he was gone and then oh, hey, he's back
and blah blah I don't know I and the other thing
that I don't like about the movie is fucking
Katie Holmes Come on. Give me a break. They could
have find a found a better actress to play that
role Well, I know they could have got Arnold
Schwarzenegger to play the character. I know
Anyways talk about Batman begins, you know why
it deserves to be in the top ten. I unlike Mike
I I love the first half of that movie. I love
it how it does tell batman's origin and I do
agree batman master the phantasm does do a great
job of telling it as well, but Regarding, you
know live action. It was the first time it was
ever done for live action at that point people
just kind of assumed and it kind of expanded
upon that and liked how it kind of Added some
of the mythos of batman. I love liam neeson as
you know that character I I'd love that relationship
between those two and the, you know, the the
mentor versus the trainee and how that evolves.
It is very different compared to the other Batman
movies. Actually, I guess you would say Batman
and Batman Begins and Batman and The Dark Knight
Rises are more connected and Dark Knight is kind
of, you know, it's on world. But I know I also
just think it kind of. Similar to what X -Men
First Class did for X -Men, Batman Begins did
for Batman. It showed it kind of made up for
the gigantic mess that was Batman and Robin that
nearly killed the character for movies and showed
that, yeah, you can actually make this character
right and do it a darker, grittier, more realistic
version of it. And I was very happy with Batman
Begins. Think to it's getting our list back to
you know what we're talking about before with
it with it with films that were Unique and had
an impact and really changed the genre You know,
we talked about that a little bit with Superman.
We talked about that with Batman 1989 I think
this is probably one of the top, you know three
to five most Important films so far in the genre
because it completely flipped the script and
then kind of ushered in a new era of superhero
films. We were talking about with Tim Burton,
even he was like, this is what I wish I could
have done back in the day. This is how a superhero
comic book film should be made. And I think you
can't ignore, like Steve has said a lot of times,
the initial chapter here in this. Trilogy or
in this set of films, you know with a you know,
he talked about with Superman with the Superman
films or you know Iron Man with Iron Man films,
etc, you know Batman Begins definitely has an
important place in the genre's history, I guess
Steve what do you think about Batman Begins coming
in here? I like the new reintroduction. I like
the fact that they use scarecrow as a villain
instead of trying to retread previous films.
I liked the new Batsuit to an extent I didn't
really like until it went Dark Knight. It was
an interesting new take on the Batman mythos
and it made it a lot more serious without making
it as hokey dark as a Tim Burton film. True.
Anybody else on Batman Begins before we move
on to number two? No, all right, then number
two on our film Again appeared on six people's
list. Mr. Wilson left it off. It's 2008 Iron
Man I had it ranked number three Steve at rank
number two Mike you had it in your top ten Dan
you had it in your top ten JT had it and right
at the end of it. I think number ten Dot -edit
number two Mr. Wilson left it off his list completely
Six yeah, so thoughts on Iron Man coming in at
number two from 2008 here. Let's start with Mike
Iron Man was again one of those movies that nobody
ever thought would get made Iron Man For me was
the 94 cartoon series as bad as that first season
isn't as cool as the second season is that show
I hadn't read a lot of Iron Man comics before
and I remember hearing at the time that, and
even nowadays people have said at the time, well
Iron Man wasn't that popular in the comics. They
were gonna do away with him or they were gonna
do something with him or whatever. But then John
Favreau, Foggy Nelson of all people, Foggy Nelson
is the character he plays in Daredevil, comes
in and directs Iron Man and... makes you believe
in a man in an iron suit, really. I mean, it's
one of those things where this was a film that
really catapulted Robert Downey Jr. back into
stardom. And it's just an amazing, amazing film.
The story is great. It hints at the Ten Rings
thing with Mandarin, but it doesn't actually
directly say anything about the Mandarin. The
fact that they got the dude and Flynn, you know,
they got Jeff Bridges to actually shave, he wanted
to shave his head for this film to play Obadiah
Stane and he did. You know, him playing Obadiah
Stane was just ingenious. Overall, Iron Man is
a damn good film. I just absolutely loved it,
so. Steve, you got it ranked number two. That's
where it came in on our list. How do you feel
about that? I can't argue with it. I really like
the film. I'd never been a really big Iron Man
fan until this film. I think Robert Downey Jr.
nailed the part right on the head. I really liked
the suit once they got into it. Just overall,
the whole film was just awesome. It gave me hope
for the future of the Marvel Cinema Universe.
Yeah, this was not one of the films that I saw
right away. I didn't see it in I don't remember
seeing it in the theater I don't even think I
saw it right away when it came out until somebody
else was watching because I just I didn't really
know much about Iron Man as kind of was in that
same realm as Incredible Hulk and a few other
things for me and then I finally was exposed
to it And then I was like just kind of opened
my eyes to the whole like you said the whole
Marvel universe Outside of spider -man and what
I'd seen X -Men I was like wow This is this is
a really good film and definitely set the stage
for not just the franchise but For Marvel in
general and what their plans were. I mean if
Iron Man isn't successful That has a major impact
on the whole superhero genre So it being successful
Was very important Dan. What do you think about
Iron Man? I'm surprised. It's up. I guess I'm
not that surprised. It's up this hike is it?
I think the success of Iron Man in a lot of ways
led to the Avengers happening. I know it was
probably planned before that, but it kind of
really sets a strong foundation for that entire
Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I think what's
interesting about Iron Man is how Robert Downey
Jr. is one of the few superheroes that's actually
probably more interesting when he's out of the
uniform than when he's in it. Great some of those
sequences are just of him in the garage making
the the suit Those to me some of my favorite
parts of that movie. Just seeing him kind of
tinkle the tinkle in that sorry Tinker with his
toys and the I love all the comedy in that especially
with all those little robot arms and I thought
those are great Special effects are great. I
know a lot of people argue There's not much action
in it and I can kind of see that the ending just
kind of does feel a little tacked on But everything
up to that is deserving. I talked about earlier
with Iron Man 3, I think this is really the character
development of Iron Man. And this is the best
Robert Downey Jr. performance of the character.
And I think Downey Jr. even said it himself that
this was the best thing. He did it because it
was new for him. It was something he was embracing.
It was something he had to go completely in on.
And I think he... sold this movie and Marvel
owes him a great debt maybe not necessarily financially
because he's getting paid a lot but he made this
movie work and I don't think Iron Man would work
without him I think just the character development
of seeing that young cocky money -first attitude
and transformed and developed into something
else and how it's correlates with, you know,
the life of Donnie Jr. and in his real life and
how he had to deal with his own real -life baggage
and how that kind of came into the movie. I think
that was brilliantly handled. So, yeah, I'm happy
it's here. I really can't deny the greatness
of Iron Man, and I'm glad it beat out the other
Iron Man films. All right. Technical difficulties.
Let's move on, shall we? All right. So number
one on our top ten. superhero films We have the
Dark Knight With 130 points. It's blowing everything
else away was 32 ahead of Iron Man and all seven
people voted on it the first time that's happened
since we talked about Batman 1989 and Tied with
Dark Knight. I mentioned there was two ties is
the Avengers also on seven people's lists Avengers
was a top choice for myself Steve and Mr. Wilson.
And Dark Knight was the top choice for Dan and
Birdman Dodd. And everybody else had all these
kind of near the top. It was just kind of who
had it higher than who. The lowest that anybody
had either of these films was Birdman had Avengers
at number six. JT had Dark Knight at number five
on his list. Everybody else had them within the
top three or four. So who wants to start with
either Dark Knight or the Avengers? Mike, go
ahead. I love how you ask the question and just
throw it to me. Dark Knight is easily my favorite
out of the Nolan trilogy. I know everybody says,
oh, Heath Ledger, he can't hold a candle to Jack
Nicholson, but Heath Ledger... poured himself
into that role of the Joker. I mean, he is, I
guess, technically you could almost say he's
the new 52 Joker, but it was just amazing to
see his growth. If you had seen where he debuted
here in America in 10 Things I Hate About You
is Patrick Verona. Looking at that role and then
looking at the Joker, how his acting had changed
over nearly 10 years. um just just amazing the
action in dark knight was awesome the fact that
bruce was in the suit the majority of the time
and we didn't need 45 minutes to an hour of origin
crap like in begins uh dark knight overall just
an absolute masterpiece of a movie avengers same
thing but um Dan, what are your thoughts on Dark
Knight? Before you go, just so everyone knows
kind of how we stand, I kind of went over it
a little bit, but there was one, two, three,
four people that had Avengers higher than Dark
Knight. And three people that had Dark Knight
higher than Avengers. But it was all very close.
Most of them were just one spot away. Dan, I
know you had Dark Knight higher. How do you feel
about them tying? Ties, it's like, you know,
kissing your sister as they say. For me, the
reason I went with Dark Knight is because it's
over the Avengers. Avengers was my number two,
Dark Knight my number one. There are very two
different ways of doing a comic book movie. and
they're both successful at what they try to attempt,
very successful. The reason I went with Dark
Knight is because I feel like it transcends the
genre. It pushes the genre forward to a point
it has yet to even come close to since then.
If you were to kind of show that comic book movies
can be just as good as any other genre, just
as critically acclaimed, just as cinematic, just
as incredible, as deep as any other... film is
worthy of awards or Academy if you're going to
say what one deserves to be Best Picture, I think
that to me would go to Dark Knight. And you look
at Dark Knight, you could even credit it for
changing the Oscars because after that it ended
up going to 10 films a year, in large part because
of the outrage that it didn't get a nomination.
And if Dark Knight came out a few years later
with 10 nominations, there's no doubt it would
be. Avengers is a lot of fun. It's one of the
best experiences I've ever had in a theater seeing
that with a crowd It was just it was like a sports
like atmosphere Dark Knight was a little bit
different and it was it was lingering it was
stayed with me So that's why it's it's it's cut.
It's very hard choice, but that's the reason
I went with Dark Knight over I probably like
Dark Knight pulled more at my at my emotions
important, you know pulled more at my heart,
I guess a little bit had probably a a more, I
don't want to say deep impact, but it had more
of an impact on me when I watched it. But I did
rate Avengers higher, and my reasoning for that
was basically, it kind of depends on what day
of the week or what week we're in. One day I'll
probably say Dark Nights better, one day I'll
probably say Avengers better, and I kind of go
back and forth. Just depends on my mood. But
when I was making the list for this particular
venture, what... made me put Avengers higher
was more so how it brought everything that had
led up to that and delivered a big payoff. There
was so much potential for disaster with this
film. With all the different films leading up
to it and eventually climax with this film, this
film could have destroyed everything. This film
could have just... You know done awful things
for for all these franchises if it was just hokey
or if it was cheesy or if nobody bought into
it and Just watching this. I just left the theater
like Happy that they seemingly did everything
right. They balanced all these different personalities
all these different characters. They proved that
it can be done the action was good, the comedy
was good, and it was more so of the bigger picture
of all these different films leading up to it
that made me kind of put it a little bit apart.
It was something that we had never seen before
with this many superheroes, major superheroes
sharing screen time. So that kind of edged it
out for me on that one. But I totally agree with
what you're saying about the cinematic experience
with Dark Knight. Steve, you had Avengers number
one. What do you think? For me, it was kind of
a toss -up, but the only reason I gave Avengers
my number one slot and I had Dark Knight a little
bit further down was because to me, I think that
the dynamic and the way that the film meshed
and just the feel of it, it was not only more
fun and action -packed, but it was just... There
was more of that film that was memorable. The
Dark Knight, while it did... tug at me for being
a Batman film and everything and for having the
Joker versus Batman and all this cool stuff in
the film. I still think Avengers was more of
a superior film than The Dark Knight, which honestly
kills me because I love Batman way more than
I love any Marvel property. But for me, I think
Iron Man kind of That and the the way that the
entire Avengers film was pulled off kind of Stole
the show for me Dan I want to ask you a question
real quick Is it do we have it right though as
far as are these two films on an island away
from the rest of the pack? I Definitely think
so. I think they represent the what you can do
with a comic book movie. You have Avengers, which
is the epitome of a huge blockbuster, summer
popcorn film. Yeah, there are deep memos, but
it's really just, it benefits, its biggest positive
aspect is its sheer ability to entertain. When,
with Dark Knight, it's like the polar opposite
in a way where it's more... Cynical it's kind
of it kind of is darker. It's the tone is a little
more gritty So I do think when you think of comic
book movies I think these are always gonna be
number one and number two you can switch them
back and forth They're always gonna be that argument
of which one's better. So I I think like you
said We could do this poll a few weeks from now
and we could still Wind up with a tie We can
add in more people. It's always going to be this
close with these two and I don't really see another
movie coming in unless like Avengers 2 can top
it or maybe Superman and Batman of that can top
it but I think these will kind of hold the candle
for the comic book industry with movies for a
long time. Mike, what do you think? Are these
two heads and shoulders above everything else
or do other films deserve to be in the same breath?
I still say, at least for me personally, Iron
Man 3 is the evolution of the Tony Stark character
over four films, Iron Man 1, 2, Avengers, and
then the third film. I still would probably watch
Iron Man 3 more times than I would watch Dark
Knight or Avengers, just because I love the movie
that much. As far as Avengers and Dark Knight
together as a tie, I mean, Dan set it perfectly.
One is, you know, Marvel has that way of fitting
in the comedy into the seriousness. Neither one
had ever been nothing like either one had been
done before Oh, no. Oh, no, there's no way there's
no way in hell either movie could have done been
done either five years or ten years before they
were actually You know in 2003 Dark Knight couldn't
have been done technology. Just wasn't there
Yeah, but I'm just saying even if it could or
couldn't like nobody had ever pulled off that
serious that dark. Yeah You know style of a comic
book movie nor had anyone ever pulled off what
Avengers did with All the movies leading up to
it all the different characters, etc. And then
do a success with though They're they're two
unique films in that respect. Oh, yeah, most
definitely and that they both have their their
ups and downs You know there there are times
in the dark night where I get Because I've seen
it so many times where I'm getting like, okay,
let's let's kind of get going here with Avengers
it's just I think the beginning a little bit
drags for me now after seeing it so many times
like that whole opening scene with the tesseract
and the evacuation and all that but after that
it's Bing Bam Boom you know all the little uh
nods to the different sayings and whatever else
like Cap saying you know and oh and Hulk smash
and you just see Ruffalo's face in the Hulk suit
just just that snicker and it's it's just it
that they're both very awesome movies in in their
own respect and yeah they do probably deserve
to be a tie and like like Dan said no matter
how many if we added we had seven total lists
overall right if we added 13 people and made
it 20 lists I guarantee you it would probably
still come down to these two for the number one
tie Yeah, and we'll get more thoughts here overall
as I just want to re reveal the list now again
We had book and ties we had ties for the last
spot and ties for the first spot So going through
the list here. We had x -men first class 1989
Batman Superman Superman 2 Iron Man 3 Spider
-Man 2 Captain America Batman Begins Iron Man
Dark Knight and the Avengers so looking at that
list overall Also, I'd like to note that for
one of the first times I haven't gone back through
and checked every list But I know a lot of these
lists we've had a heavy 80s influence So for
once we have domination from different decades.
We had four from this current decade that we're
on four from the first decade of the 2000s Two
from 80s and one from the 70s. So yeah, we changed
our decade influence a little bit here But looking
at the list overall, is there anything that we
should take out Dan? I don't know about take
out. It would be kind of nice to see a little
bit more variety Maybe taking out a Superman
and maybe taking out an Iron Man and replacing
it with something else What you would replace
it with that's probably a good question. There's
a lot of things that could kind of go in there
But overall I think there's nothing on our list
that is all that Shocking or anything that I
disagree with all that much probably the most
is Iron Man 3 just because I feel it's I don't
I don't feel strongly about it as I do with the
other ones in the top ten. But I think we have
a good variety of Marvel and DC. Like you said,
different decades. We have everything from Superman,
which is really the first superhero movie, to
the Avengers. So I think it's a decent variety.
But I just, of decades, I just would wish there
was a little bit more variety of characters.
But it's kind of usually the best characters
make the best movies, so that's why you probably
see a lot repeating. Mike, anything you'd add
or take out? No, and taking out Iron Man 3 wouldn't
make any difference because I would rather take
out First Class than take out Iron Man 3 and
put anything in that place. Not that I dislike
First Class, but like putting a TMNT in there
or something like that. Looking back at the honorable
mentions list, I mean, there are so many that
are just not worthy of a top 10. Well, go ahead
wait wait one second Dan mentioned that you know,
he wishes that there was more of a Decade gap.
No, no isn't variety of characters, right? Okay
variety of characters, but the problem is until
the 2000s You had Superman and Batman and everybody
even though I defend Batman forever Pretty much
everybody on this planet hates Batman Forever
and Batman and Robin. Everybody hates Superman
3 and 4. So up until the 2000s, you didn't have
a variety of characters, you know. That's true.
I mean, if we're going to expand this beyond
feature film and break into like made for TV
movie or something like that, sure, you could
count the 1940s Captain America and Batman stuff
and 60s Batman and whatever else, but... before
X -Men, really, I mean, I guess you can count
Blade in 98, but before X -Men in 2000, it was
Batman and Superman for 30 years. Yeah, I understand
that, but I think since then, it's been an explosion.
I think there are more out there now. I mean,
you even talked about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
That would be great to see on here. Even arguably
Hellboy, I could think that. At least a second
one maybe was deserving. I know you guys aren't
a big fan, but I do enjoy kick -ass There's a
you know, a few others. I mean, yes, there's
not a huge variety like you mentioned there hasn't
been between 1970, you know when in the 1970s
since Superman came out and till expen hit it
big there wasn't that huge amount of you know
We're not gonna vote for steel, you know, there's
not a great amount or 1994 is fantastic for obviously
those movies were horrible, but I You make a
good point. So hopefully now we'll see now with
movies like Ant -Man coming out and some of these
even smaller characters Hopefully like that's
what we should do for the next top 10 GCR stuff
the next 10 episodes We should get the 10 worst
films from each of these genres I find it interesting
that you pointed out Iron Man 3 Because I'd like
to reiterate that that was the only film in our
countdown that was voted on by less than five
people Only four people voted for Iron Man 3
So if we're looking at the honorable mention
list and just trying to get films, you know that
were voted on by more people We had amazing spider
-man was voted on by more people the original
x -men the crow and TMNT. So those were all voted
on more people's lists. So Iron Man 3 was the
least voted on movie, but it did make it solidly
on our list. Steve, anything you would take out
or add in? Honestly, I think that the list was
pretty sufficient, actually. I think it's a good
job. I think it shows a good variety. And I asked
you guys all at the beginning which franchise
would have the most appearances, and unanimously
you guys said Batman. And you were all right.
There's three Batman films on there, which is
more than any other franchise. Iron Man had two,
Superman had two. So spider -man didn't have
any spider -man had one spider -man and yeah,
okay spider -man two. Yeah, that's that's right
So yeah Batman reigns supreme I guess with the
three entries on the list Thank goodness the
mic didn't get his way with Batman forever or
Batman and Robin Hi Yeah, Steve injected Joker
toxin into everybody so Batman would win Any
other final thoughts on our superhero category
overall Dan No, I think like you mentioned I
had a little things here and there, but I think
it's a relatively solid list and I think unlike
the other franchises There wasn't that much debate
on what qualifies and what doesn't so I think
that made it a little bit easier in making your
decision so Mike final thoughts on superheroes
No, I think the list is is damn good. I'm interested
to see what Marvel does with phase two. I'm super
interested To see what DC's got coming up next
and We'll just go from there Steve I Think pretty
sufficient and I can't wait to see what else
comes up in the future Yeah, this is definitely
out of all the all the genres that we looked
at This is the one that will change the most
over the next five or ten years I think Oh, yeah,
there will be other films that come out that
would break into some of these other genres that
we've talked about But nothing is evolving faster
right now in my mind than the superhero genre
So this is one that would be real interesting
to see what it looks like 3d three years from
now five years from now, etc All right, well
that's gonna do it for our top 10 film countdowns
Geek cast radio is going to be taking a somewhat
slight hiatus break between July and late September,
early October, so we can prepare for the top
100 animated films countdown that we've got coming
up. For now, I am TF2 on Mike with... We will
catch you next time. Unleash the geek in you.
Your work on anti -electron collisions is unparalleled
and I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control
and turn into an enormous green rage monster
Nice I couldn't find any mob bosses Well sergeant,
it's lieutenant now. You really started something
bent cops running scared. Hope on the streets,
but the narrows And we still haven't picked up
Crane or half the inmates of our committee for
aging. We will. We can bring Gotham back. What
about Escalation? Escalation. We start carrying
semi -automatics, they buy automatics. We start
wearing Kevlar. They buy armor -piercing rounds.
And you're wearing a mask. Jumping off rooftops.
Now take this guy. Armed robbery double homicide
how to taste for the theatrical like you leaves
a calling card I'll look into it I never said,
thank you You might have missed a couple things,
you know. Doing time is a capsicle. Go, Webb!
Fly! Up, up and away, Webb! Shazam! Go! Go! Go,
Webb, go! It is one thing... to question the
official story and another thing entirely to
make wild accusations or insinuate that I'm a
superhero. I never said you were a superhero.
Didn't? Well, good, because that would be outlandish
and fantastic. I'm just not the hero type, clearly,
with this laundry list of character defects,
all the mistakes I've made, largely public. The
truth is... I am Iron Man. I've seen a bit of
mileage and you've got the, uh, blowstick of
destiny. Would you like a drink? Stalling me
won't change anything. No, no threatening no
drink. You sure I'm having one The Chitauri are
coming nothing will change that what have I to
fear the Avengers That's what we call ourselves
sort of like a team Earth's mightiest heroes
type thing. Yes. I've met them Yeah, it takes
us a while to get any traction. I'll give you
that one, but let's do a head count here your
brother the demigod a Super soldier living legend
who kind of lives up to the legend a man with
breathtaking anger management issues a couple
of master assassins and you Big fella You've
managed to piss off every single one of them.
That was the plan. Not a great plan when they
come and They will They'll come for you. I have
an army. We have a Hulk Jarvis. Hey. All wrapped
up here, sir. Will there be anything else? You
know what to do. The clean slate protocol, sir?
It's screwed. It's Christmas. Yes. Yes. It's
your dear old Uncle Joker here. I bet you're
asking yourself, what could I be possibly doing
here of all places? Well, I'm laughing at the
