About this Episode

The hosts rank their top 10 sports films after compiling five separate lists. They review honorable mentions like Moneyball, The Fighter, and Hoosiers before discussing their selections, including The Wrestler, Remember the Titans, Major League, Rocky, and Field of Dreams. The conversation covers the challenges of portraying sports realistically on screen, the prevalence of cliches in the genre, and personal favorites.

Welcome to geek cast radio episode 44. We're

jumping back into the countdowns with the top

10 sports films countdown I am one of your hosts

to your Mike joining me is optimus solo. Hello.

Hello And of course movie role Dan. Hello. Hello

Yes, it is time to talk sports Shooting three

-pointers hitting home runs making slap shots

and kicking field goals Because Freaking soccer

isn't a sport It should be interesting to see

which sports are most represented and I Don't

know. I'm just interested to see reactions as

we go through Like always I have compiled all

the lists. This was a lot of us actually on this

one There was a well, maybe not a lot, but there

was five five lists submitted for the main core

here of GCR and And we've compiled all this and

I just posted all the honorable mentions So this

is the first time that everyone's seen the honorable

mentions Which means any movie that got a vote

that did not make our top 10 and as usual we

will go around the horn and get people's reactions

as far as The movies they're seeing show up in

the honorable mentions. I will real quick say

vote wise The closest to making it was the rookie

with 30 points missed the top 10 by a point And

there's a good deal of them about, let's see,

almost 50 films that got a vote that did not

make the top 10. So who wants to start with their

reactions on the honorable mention list? Well,

I'm not going to start with mine. I just want

to give people a little note here. When Kevin

first posted the honorable mentions list, I then

linked him to... for anyone that's seen and if

you haven't seen this movie what the hell is

wrong with you anyone that's seen despicable

me the minion what moment that video will be

embedded in this post because the honorable mentions

list i would my jaw dropped to the floor just

uh... don't dan why don't you start well the

first one that comes out to me that's near the

top as well as uh... besides rookie uh... is

moneyball uh... i thought that would I had a

good shot at making it. I mean, it just came

out recently. It's a really great film starring

Brad Pitt. I was hoping that would make the top

10. Just a second there, I thought you said sorry,

Brad Pitt, not starring Brad Pitt. I guess we

could apologize to him. No Oscar, no top 10.

Also on there, you kind of alluded to it earlier,

Slapshot, a great Paul Newman film, possibly

the best hockey movie ever made. It's questionable,

but it's up there for sure. It wasn't about hockey.

I'm just kidding. So glad blades of glory did

not make the top ten I ate that fucking movie

There's also I mean some other newer like films

the fighter Another recently great sports movie

Some classics also didn't make it that kind of

shocked me Hoosiers a lot of people named that

as their best sports movie I think ESPN had that

as their greatest sports movie when they did

their list a few years ago So I'm surprised that

didn't make the top ten. Maybe it just, if you're

not a basketball fan, that could be a reason.

I'm a huge basketball fan and I just don't, I

don't know, I don't get into that movie that

much. Well, one thing with sports movies as a

genre, I mean obviously you have your comedy

sports movies, which I'm not talking about. But

there is a very fine line with a serious sports

movie of becoming very cheesy of becoming very

cliche Of becoming very unrealistic and I find

that especially with basketball movies are usually

More suspect or more prone to falling into those

traps of having the classic scenario of having

these things that You know, I know Hoosiers is

based on a real story and everything, so I'm

not necessarily talking about that one. I'm just

talking about basketball movies in general. As

someone who played basketball for a long time,

a lot of them I just can't buy as realistic.

Kind of like the air up there. Well, it's just

some of the, just like the classics, cliche type

things that they do. And it's like, oh, I've

seen this a thousand times. And I don't know.

So I mean, sports movies are very hit or miss

when it comes to believability and Hollywoodizing

it. Yeah, it's sports movies are probably the

most niche genre in Hollywood when it comes to

like, you know, we've we've done action we've

done War what was the other one? You know, we've

done action comedy and war movies to this point

We're doing sports now and then you know in the

future. We'll have other lists from other genres.

But like yeah, I mean like Well, you know everyone

says that you know just to put it in geek terms

everyone says that you know certain transformers

franchises are niche the sports film franchise

to me is It's a very niche market whether you

like it love it hate it despise it or just find

it. Yeah, whatever Well, I mean, I think for

a long time people were Realized how hard it

was to do Like a sports movie. So that's why

we had so many sports comedies over the years

Because that was a safe way to do it then if

we make a comedy out of it, you know, no one's

gonna you know, fault us for these things. It

hasn't really, for me, been until recent times.

I mean, there's been some exceptions, but it

hasn't been more since, you know, like the last

like 10 years or so, five, 10 years, where they've

started to actually have serious sports movies

that are believable and that are doing it right.

But there was a long period of time where that

was a very dangerous thing to attempt. I mean,

Dan might have more, a different take on that.

I mean, he's definitely, knows a lot about his

movies, but I don't know, I just feel like...

It's a dangerous game to do the sports movies

until recently where we've had a lot of good

ones come out like you mentioned Moneyball and

the fighter and Some of these more recent ones

that have actually seemed like they do a decent

job with it But I don't know I feel like growing

up it was just a dangerous thing for you never

knew what you're gonna get Yeah, I agree. I mean

you get a lot often even looking at our honorable

mentions a lot of times sports movies and family

movies tend to mesh and you have things like

you know The Sandlot which is movie. I love I

think that's actually when they gets it, right?

It's not too cheesy, but there are a lot that

that are Like the Little Big League angels in

the outfield a movie. I loved as a kid, but now

again It's not does not hold the test of time,

but there are some older films that weren't as

cheesy They're few and far between like I think

the classic bad news bears is probably the best

example because that was more raunchy than then

Then you know, it was a you know that They didn't

go for cheesy at all. They kind of, if anything,

it was more of a cynical look at sports because

they really didn't care. It wasn't about winning.

But for the most part, that is, I think the hard

thing with sports is you're trying to capture

real life drama. And sometimes the real thing

is always better. It's hard to kind of represent

that in a movie. And I think that's why we do

get cheesy aspects of it. And they overplay the

drama. And it works when you're watching sports.

But when you're trying to watch like a Hollywood

take on it, it doesn't play as real. Good I was

gonna say that's why I think sports often have

some of the best documentaries like Which the

my number one which I knew probably wouldn't

make it which is which is hoop dreams Which I

think is talk about a believable movie as it's

definitely is one of the best I think the best

worst movie ever made Just its scope and what

it was able to accomplish but overall, I think

I agree It's hard to it's that really fine line

of being cheesy and being kind of you know being

believable, and a lot of the movies tend to land

in the cheesy. And those that don't have a unique

take on something or aren't taking a real story

that actually happened to make it unique, and

some of these are based on real stories, but

it also becomes repetitive at times. I don't

know how many times I can see a coach from one

side of the tracks taking over this misfit team

and leading them to victory. It's been done so

many times. Or the inspirational something tragic

happens and the team has to rally type thing.

I'm not trying to downplay that. Those things

happen in real life and they are powerful moments

and stuff like that. But it just seems that we

get that over and over and over again with sports

movies to where it makes it seem very you know,

like I said, repetitive, which is something that

can harm it. As far as my surprises, as far as

critically acclaimed sports movies, I know some

people might not necessarily label them 100 %

sport movies, but I was a little surprised that

there wasn't a little bit more love for Million

Dollar Baby and Cinderella Man. I've never seen

either of them, so they didn't make my list.

Just because those are two that get a lot of

of good reviews. Obviously some of those more

recent ones maybe faltered a little because not

everyone's seen a Moneyball being the main one.

I voted, I put a couple votes towards Trouble

with the Curve, but I do feel Moneyball is a

superior movie out of those two. And The Fighter

being a recent one that I thought might get a

little more love. As far as just some some ones

that I kind of have a sentimental spot for, you

already talked about Sandlot. Bad News Bears,

the original one. To me that's such a great movie

They just did that movie right and It was so

good for the time that it was made and I can

watch that over and over again. I love that movie

I'm not a huge fan of it, but I thought it would

get more votes varsity blues I thought that would

that would get a little more votes from the panel,

but I am NOT a huge fan of that movie White men

can't jump Let's see some of the other ones.

I don't know why I like hardball. It's such a

bad movie, but I like it I was really surprised

that the natural didn't get more votes But maybe

that's because of its age Being too old on the

other end of the spectrum And two of my favorites

that I knew wouldn't get my many votes, but I

love 61 the movie and I absolutely love eight

men out It went out is a great film and I was

glad that it did get a few votes But I knew it

wouldn't get enough to make our list Mr. Blanchard,

what about your take on the honorable mention

list for me? I actually had to go back and because

when we just to give people a little bit of behind

-the -scenes stuff when we first created when

you first You actually brought us the idea of

doing the app, our own version of the AFL, AFI

style of countdown. And then you put all the

master list of films we could choose from for

different categories. And we had so many different

arguments and discussions over which film goes

in which category. I actually had to rearrange

my sports and coming of age lists because I had

varsity blues on both because varsity blues is

kind of both. Yeah, that's true. you know a lot

of the sports movies rocky is kind of both because

he he does have you know that kind of coming

-of -age moment throughout his career um but

for me the surprises are like dan connor already

said the rookie i the reason why i love the rookie

is it's not your it's not your cliched sports

film at least not to me it isn't because you

have a guy who had his shot was relegated to

supporting his family not saying that's a bad

thing at all I'm just saying like because he

had his shot and lost it And then, you know,

it comes back on him and, oh my god, at X amount

of years, he's better than what he was when he

was younger. I love that film. I think it's a

great movie. Varsity Blues, you can love it,

you can hate it, whatever. It's a decent film.

It's got some damn creepy acting by Jon Voight

as the coach, because that coach will do anything

to win. Holy crap. I'm really surprised the League

of their own didn't get most of this. I am so

surprised the league on their own did not get

more votes and did not at least make the top

ten because that is, that not only is a testament

to baseball, that is a testament to women. Happened

right next door to me too. The Rockford Peaches

are literally the closest town to me. Rockford

is. I knew Rocky Balboa the technically fourth,

fifth, sixth. I think it's like the sixth Rocky

film. I knew that wasn't going to make it. The

Bostonian in me is kind of sad that Fever Pitch

and Summer Catch didn't make it, but I kind of

knew they wouldn't. Another one I loved from

when I was a kid was Mr. Baseball. That's the

Tom Selleck movie, right? Yeah, when he goes

to Japan or China or somewhere over there. I

haven't seen that move in a long time, obviously.

You said there were only five lists that were

submitted? Yeah, there's five core members and

we all submitted one. Right, yeah, I'm very...

I'm not shocked, but I'm kind of sad to see that

Days of Thunder didn't make it at all. By the

way, Blades of Glory did get one vote. Yeah.

Is that the one you were talking about that you

didn't like? Yeah. will fail and i think there

are a couple of them tin cup i see on here uh...

i almost do some votes towards cool right now

uh... you know john can you do that no was that

when i just saw that i was all rudy surprise

rudy didn't get more votes very surprised reading

making yeah i mean a lot of people of the movies

that it's okay to for guys to cry at from point

to Rudy. And one I know, I'm not surprised they

didn't get more votes because it's not that popular,

but one I wanted to make mention of is Big Fan,

which is a different sports movie because it's

more about the fans. It stars Pat Oswald as this

crazy New York Giants fan, or they don't say

New York Giants because they can't use the team,

but it's obviously the Giants. And being a Giants

fan myself, that really hit home. But that's

a good movie. But like you mentioned, Rudy is

a huge surprise. That really didn't get much

love at all. I'm really surprised that Rocky

3 didn't make it for the simple fact of it's

Mr. T versus Sylvester Stallone and it's Survivor's

Eye of the Tiger even though I know Eye of the

Tiger was used in the first film but you know

it's just one of those things where No offense

to the original Rocky, I like it, but if I had

to choose from all the sequels, for me, Rocky

III is the best sequel out of that franchise.

I think that probably suffered from the same

thing. Some of the action franchises suffered

from, it's just people have their favorites.

I voted for Rocky film. I wasn't Rocky III, so

I think what you have is a lot of times people

aren't going to fill their list with Rocky. Although

one person did have four Rocky films in their

top 20. Well there you go. So I guess it is possible.

We won't call his name out. So are we ready to

get to the top 10, Mike? I think so, but first,

a few clips. Ready, set, hut! After high school,

I'm going to play football at Notre Dame. Chasing

a stupid dream causes nothing but you and everyone

around you heartache. The problem with dreamers

is they usually are not doing it. Are you fully

aware of the sacrifices you're gonna have tonight?

It's the most beautiful campus in the world.

Having dreams is what makes life tolerable. You're

a daemons for rich kids, smart kids, great athletes.

It's not for us. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted

to go to school here. And ever since I was a

kid, everybody said it couldn't be done. I always

listened to them, believed what they said. I

don't want to do that anymore. Hey, kid! Not

supposed to be here. Not everyone is meant to

go to college. I need your help. Why should I

help? I just want to be a part of this university.

You're nuts. Yeah, a lot of people have been

telling me that lately. Sometimes a winner is

a dreamer who just won't quit. Hey, you guys!

My son's going to know his name! I'm here to

play football for the Irish. would put your heart

in some of my players' bodies. You're five feet

nothing. A hundred and nothing. You got hardly

a speck of athletic ability. In this lifetime,

you don't have to prove nothing to nobody except

yourself. A true story. From the creators of

Hoosiers. You ready to hear it? I'm ready for

this my whole life Do your best Lord to protect

other than that you know what I want there's

no use me repeating myself I owe you money no

sir I know your mama thought you might be interested

in training I don't train girls people see me

fat Sam pretty tough girly Tough ain't enough.

There's magic of fighting battles beyond endurance.

It's the magic of risking everything for a dream

that nobody sees but you. Who's your new girl?

Jesus. Working the bag, boss. I'm not your boss.

I'm gonna have bags working you. Is that right,

your daughter? Every week. The girl seems to

be coming along. Almost like someone's been helping

her. I've seen you looking at me. Yeah, out of

pity. Don't you say that if it ain't true. If

I'm too old for this, then I got nothing. If

I take you on... I promise I'll work so hard.

You don't question me. Then I'm gonna try to

forget the fact that you're a girl. Now, what

is the rule? I protect myself at all times. Good.

Find a man, marry him. People hear about what

you're doing. They life at you. I got nobody

but you, Frankie. Well, you've got me. I've made

a lot of mistakes in my life. I'm just trying

to keep you from doing the same. I know, boss.

Good man to have in the corner. Yes, he is. Hey,

get the hell down here. I just want to keep her

with me. You just protected yourself out of a

championship. Frankie, I've seen him at mass

almost every day for 23 years. The only person

who comes to church that much is the kind who

can't forgive himself for something. You got

a fight I don't know about? You gonna leave me?

Never. And it's just accepted that as a member

of American society, you will live by these laws.

In West Canaan, Texas, there is another society

which has its own laws. too much trouble for

you. Oh, no. Coach, what the hell are you doing?

Tighten, Jim. Oh, come on. I'm wearing underwear.

Does it really bother you? I can handle it. Tell

me this insanity's over in a few weeks. Five

more games. No more football, no more Kilmer,

and if I get into Brown, no more whiskey. football.

This is better than anything. We do things right

here my way! You're gonna be second string all

your life, boy! This game is 48 minutes for the

next 48 years of your life. This is your opportunity.

For you, playing football at West Keaton may

have been the opportunity of your lifetime, but

I don't want your life. You disobey me and I

will bury you. I know about your scholarship

to Brown. Only way we're going back out in the

fields without you. Kilmer said 48 minutes, the

next 48 years of our lives. I say we go out there

and we'll leave it all out on the field. We got

the rest of our lives to be mediocre, but we

have the opportunity to play like gods. Let's

be heroes. You had that eye of the tiger, man.

The edge. And now you gotta get it back. And

the way to get it back is to go back to the beginning.

You know what I mean? United Artists and Chertoff

Winkler proudly present Rocky III. The worst

thing happened to you that could happen to any

fighter, you got civilized. The truth is we both

started out on the same corner and I got lucky

with my life and it's driving you nuts. Philadelphia

salutes its favorite son, Rocky Balboa. All these

nice folks, why you been ducking me? This guy

is a wrecking machine. You know, you got a big

mouth. Why don't you come out and close it, Balboa?

Come on. I don't wanna fight this guy. You'll

fight him without me. Balboa was a fine champion,

but his time has passed. See that look in their

eyes, right? Gotta get that look back, Rock.

Eye of the Tiger, come on. That will destroy

any man who tries to take what I got. I'm gonna

torture him. I'm gonna crucify him. For the first

time in my life, I'm afraid. Damn right, come

on! There's nothing wrong with being afraid.

You thought I was tough? This jump will kill

you. You wake up after a few years thinking you're

a winner, but you're not. There is no tomorrow!

Rocky's greatest challenge to save his honor,

his marriage, and his manhood against his most

devastating and dangerous opponent. Go for it.

Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burgess Meredith,

Carl Weathers, Burt Young, and introducing Mr.

T. Rocky III, an American tradition. I know you're

smart and I'm proud of you. I want you to make

some friends this summer. Meet Scotty Smalls.

Kyle, get it! The kid is a L -7 winning. My life's

over. Man, this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking.

You should have fun. Climb trees, hop fences,

get into trouble. Just stand there and stick

your glove out in the air. I'll take care of

it. Now he's in. With the coolest guys in the

neighborhood, they've got the look. They've got

the moves. gave it to him. Babe Ruth signed that

ball. We gotta get that ball back. You got any

bright ideas? Initiate retrieval section number

one. of adventure. The Sand Block. A little piece

of paradise, a half a block wide, and a whole

season long. I'd like to lead you all in a little

prayer. Dear Lord, may our feet be swift, may

our bats be mighty, and may our balls be plentiful.

Lord, I'd just like to thank you for that waitress

in South Bend. You know who she is. She kept

calling your name. This summer, Tom Hanks is

managing the impossible, the Rockford Peaches.

would like to take you out to the ball game for

an all -star comedy. They'll pay you $75 a week.

We only make $30 at the dairy. Well then, this

would be more, wouldn't it? The manager, Tom

Hanks. Are you crying? There's no crying! There's

no crying in baseball! The catcher, Gina Davis.

When you say we slip in the back seat, you make

a man out of me. What if I smack you around for

a while? Can't we do both? The pitcher, Lori

Petty. I made it! I'm a peach! A Rockford peach!

The scout, John Lovitz. Are you coming? See how

worse it is? The train moves, not the station.

And batting clean -up, Madonna. What if my uniform

bursts open and oops, my bosoms come flying out?

You think there are men in this country who ain't

seen your bosoms? A league of their own. Alright!

God knows we have a game. It's not like any of

this helps, believe me. Directed by Penny Marshall.

So getting into the top 10 GCRN sports films,

what do we have, Mr. Solo? Well, we should have

taken predictions on which sport would be most

represented in the top 10. But we will see as

we go through here. Starting off with... Our

number 10 selection, the year is 1996. And honestly,

I don't know what sport you would classify this

as. The fucking zoo's closed, Ray. It's just

closed. Our number 10 film is Jerry Maguire.

Okay, now, let me go first with this because

this is so funny that this is coming up now.

Because Dan and I about, I don't know, a month

and a half ago... Recorded episode 96 of M wire

and talked about this film and we debated in

that episode whether it's a sports film or a

coming -of -age story for McGuire for that character

because That movie is essentially about sports

agents. It has nothing to do with I know I'm

not saying it isn't a sports movie I'm just saying

like it deals with like it's no field of dreams

it doesn't deal with baseball it doesn't you

know it's no air up there it's no slap shot it's

it doesn't deal with a direct it does what deals

with football but what I'm saying is like it's

not a direct football story it's the behind the

scenes of a football so we'll put one in the

sports agent column there you go but I don't

you can't be coming to age I mean the guy is

35 already he's not as far as a character he's

developing, but coming of age to me means more

so going from adolescence to adulthood. But yeah,

I mean, I guess if you had to classify it as

a specific sport, I guess you'd go with football.

More so just the story of a sports agent. It's

funny because did I send you a message on Twitter

or on Facebook or on Skype about this film? I

forget. What'd you say? I said is it bad that

the only thing I remember about Jerry Maguire

when I watched it from when I was a kid was the

sex scene. Oh Yeah, yeah, that was on Skype.

Yeah, okay I remember that movie so well because

of the fact that it was before Tom Cruise went

crazy It was before you know right now today

in 2013 the only films I look forward to from

him is whenever he does jumps back in the shoes

of even hunt and goes on a mission that are impossible

i remember about this movie though specifically

besides the sexing was uh... the song uh... secret

garden by bruce springsteen that literally was

played every seven song on the radio for uh...

at least a year i see that song is so strange

there are several songs in the Mostly in the

90s that did this and I think I think I'm not

saying it's a bad thing, but I think I was a

year and a half old song by that point, too Right

it exactly because Bruce had original burst Bruce

Wayne originally released it like 95 And it didn't

get any gain any popularity until it hit the

movie But in the 90s there were songs on the

radio and I think and again like I just said

I'm not saying this a bad thing But I think Elton

John really hit on something when he released

his Diana version of Candle in the Wind with

Stuff behind the music like clips behind it and

that's the version of the song for for this song

Secret garden that I had put in the M wire episode

where they're talking throughout the song as

the song plays But yeah, that song was everywhere.

I mean camera crew who directed is pretty notorious

for picking out really great soundtracks He you

know, he did almost famous a few others I mean

the sex scene of course is pretty memorable with

that movie I remember being a kid and just I

think seeing that movie and I don't think my

parents realized what it was and That being kind

of huge shocker, but I think too like Tom Cruise's

give a pretty solid performance in that one of

his better performances and obviously Cuban Gooding

jr. Who who I think has has a better character

than a performance. But I think if you're going

to akin that movie to any other film, it's probably

most like Moneyball because it is that behind

the scenes type of, you know, dealing not so

much the actual playing on the field. Right.

But oh, yeah, I agree with that. The thing about

Cuba is he acted that character well, like like

that, like he jumped in like that's pretty much

I know he's done other stuff. I've seen him in

other things, but barely. Rod Tidwell is the

one character I always associate with him. Well,

I do remember he was in one of those, I don't

know if it was Marine or Army, he was in one

of those, yeah, Men of Honor. But Jerry Maguire

for number 10, I think that fits because it's

a damn good movie if you just take it. At face

value without if you just watch it to enjoy it

and not you know Do what we do on my or any other

review shows and analyze it. It's a damn decent

movie It's kind of funny because it kind of removes

the sports cliches and then inserts romantic

comedy cliches in its place But besides that

I think the overall story like Tom Cruise's story

and that is what makes that movie work for the

most part right So we basically go from a sports

romantic comedy or romantic comedy film to a

sports Just straight -up comedy film for our

number ninth spot on our list and we're going

to 2005's Adam Sandler take on the longest yard

This is me this is Big time propelled by Steve.

This was his number one on his list. That does

not surprise me at the least. I will give it

credit for Stone Cold Steve Austin, Bill Goldberg,

and freaking Kevin Nash all being involved with

it, I guess. Yeah, I've never actually seen this

movie, so I can't comment on it. I've seen it

several times on TV, and that's the one where

he goes to prison, right? Yeah. And it's got

Burt Reddons in it? Yeah, it's a remake of the

original. Yeah, I've seen it. I liked it. I thought

it was interesting and cool. I don't know if

it deserves I don't know if you like for me if

I was gonna switch anything out no offense Steve

But I would probably have put Rudy in its place.

I would have put multiple things in its place

Yeah, I agree I actually saw that in theaters

and I didn't hate it, but I just it's just you

know, it's an okay movie It's the original I

think is superior to it by far It's so weird

to see Burt Reynolds acting next to Adam Sandler.

It's just it's just so weird to me I like it,

but it's just it's strange. It's like what mirror

universe am I in? I think it's weirder watching

Burt Reynolds act next to Nellie And Michael

urban that yeah that that movie is like an odd

cast of it's got a lot of different people professional

wrestlers slash rap stars slash Sports stars.

Yeah sports commentators slash everybody I love

it when sport sport like actual real -life sports

commentators. I love it when they have roles

in films I always I always think that's cool.

Yeah Think it works in comedies, but if you're

gonna do actual drama, I don't think it works

as well. It depends I think it works in miracle

is al Michaels came back But I think that works

because he did the original game, but right you

have to be very careful when you do that Yeah,

all right. So moving on to our number eight film

on our list a little bit more recent for this

one 2008 So we did have a recent one get on here,

and I think this is well deserved. We're steering

away from football. We've had two football ones

so far, and now we are going in to the world

of wrestling with 2008's The Wrestler. I still

have yet to see this. I think this is awesome

that this made the list. This is probably not

that there's been a ton of movies about wrestling,

professional wrestling, but it would be hard

to ever beat this one as the best movie on this

topic. that's ever been done, that will probably

ever be done. Mickey Rourke was freaking amazing.

I will say that even though I haven't seen the

film, I was watching Raw, Monday Night Raw, back

in 2008 when this came out. And they just, in

order to promote this movie, they had so many

of their stars and their athletes just dog this

movie and dog Mickey Rourke. And it was such

a gimmick for WWE. Yeah. From what I've seen

of the film, it's a damn good film. I can't,

you know, I'm not going to go ahead and judge

it, you know, completely because obviously I

haven't seen it, but what I have seen from trailers

and from clips and stuff like that, it's a damn

good film. But I just, I don't like the way WWE

went about promoting it as far as like the wrestlers

basically calling Mickey Rourke out saying that,

Oh, You acted bad as a wrestler. Here, let's

throw you in the ring and you can see how it's

really, like, I did not agree with the way that

they promoted the film at all. Just to give a

little background on it, I mean, I've been a

professional wrestling fan my entire life until

the last, you know, five or 10 years when I kind

of lost track of things. But as far as the time

that I was watching professional wrestling, late

80s, early 90s, this is a perfect Real portrayal

of what these people's lives were like Rotten

Tomatoes gave it a 98 % Little quote here Vince

McMahon saw the film and he called Mickey Rourke

and Basically said he was really touched by it

So, I mean a lot of a lot of people that were

in there Brett Hart had good things to say about

it Jim Ross, I mean so people within the business

realize how well it was on writing paper. I don't

know, this blew me away. I did not expect it

to be as good as it was, and Mickey Rourke blew

me away with his performance. Dan, did you see

this one? Yeah, it was actually, it was on my

list as well. I had it, I think, at number six

or so. Yeah, I love the wrestler. I'm 100 % shocked

that it was on here. I was actually looking for

it in the honorable mentions. I'm like, oh, maybe

you just didn't put it on there. I did not expect

it to be in the top 10 at all. I love the wrestler.

I think just as a movie, it works really well.

It's interesting that we've had a sport changes

movie now, a professional wrestling movie, but

I think what it does too, it's Darren Aronofsky

directed the film and his direction is really

well done and a lot of it is just... Like handheld

camera a lot of tracking shots like walk walk

has a really documentary s feel because a lot

of it is just shot from behind And it does kind

of feel like you're watching like these real

matches Doesn't feel like a movie at times because

it's just it's so brutal and just kind of heartbreaking

But I love it. I think that is one of the better

movies of the last of that decade So it's well

deserved being on this list now. I can just get

the hate mail from people saying that's not a

real sport Sure, I guess. But yeah, I'm very

happy. It's a great telling. It's a great, you

know, inner look and character piece and just

letting everyone in that doesn't know, you know,

about the real behind the scenes stuff that these

guys go through and what their lives are like

and all the different pitfalls that they can

run into. It was just perfectly done in my opinion.

Even the ending was perfect. So yeah, that was

our... Number eight film we will move on now

to number seven Which we are going back to the

world of football for our third football film

two thousands remember the Titans This one to

me almost falls into that pit of repetitiveness

when you know, you have like we are Marshall

and coach Carter and But this was a little different

It kind of stands out amongst those for me a

little bit I mean I didn't vote for it, but I

can see why it got so much love dental Washington's

always good So had that going for it Mike what

do you think about remember the Titans I? Think

I've maybe seen five minutes of this film, and

that's it gotcha Although it was produced by

Brockheimer, so I might have to go back and watch

it 73 percent on rotten to me. Oh and it has

music by one of my favorite composers Trevor

Raven. Yeah, I'm gonna have to go see this I'm

gonna have to go catch this somewhere All right,

then. How about Dan? You see you remember the

Titans? Yeah, I do I enjoy remember Titans and

I do agree it it does fall into a lot of those

cliches though I think a lot of those movies

you mentioned is coach Carter. There's glory

road I think those came out those on I think

were having much because of the reaction to To

this movie And I think why why it works more

so than other those other films is obviously

because it has better performances like Denzel

Poland Some of the character actors that are

in it as well And yeah, it is cliche, but it

has a really solid cast I mean Ryan Gosling's

in this a few other really solid actors. I just

find it really endlessly rewatchable I probably

seen this movie like a trillion times every time

it's on TV. I watch it. I love the music in it,

too Great, you know of the time and I think it

handles the relationship between you know The

football players and the race issues decently.

Well, yes, it is on on the nose. It is Obvious

and like the common word cliche, but I enjoy

it is a great fantastic Does it's like if you

put it against something like the wrestler? I

would obviously say the rest is more of a better

made movie. But if you're looking for What people

what people look for in a sports movie for the

most part like that good, you know feel good

story I think it's there and uh, I gotta correct

myself. I did vote for it in the 20th spot Um,

so I put it on my list in the last spot and it

was on all of our lists except for mike's because

he hadn't seen it So that should give it a little

credit that it did show up on everybody's What

happened You have to repeat that consensus there

what's that well you You have to repeat that,

because you cut out. I was just saying it was

on all of our lists. Except for yours. Steve

had it all the way up to number two, and all

the rest of us did it. So we were pretty consistent

in saying that it deserved to be on there. I

don't know if I would put it above the wrestler,

but I would put it above Longus Yard and Jerry

Maguire. So that was our seventh movie on the

film. I gotta keep track of my darn numbers.

going into our six here we've had three football

basically if you count jerry maguire as a football

and we've had a professional wrestling one and

now going to the world of boxing for 1980s raging

bull wow robert de niro as jake lamada um and

there's a lot of movies i need to watch apparently

this movie is amazing i'll let dan go first though

about raging bull Yeah, Regent Bowl is number

two on my list right underneath Hoop Dreams and

Regent Bowl is just It's a masterpiece like legitimately

if you're talking about Scorsese's best films

I think it's arguably one of them the way he

shot it Like some of the the fight choreography

and his camera work is just amazing You have

performed, you know a great one of the best denier

performances for an actor who has Just like a

cavalcade of amazing performances. This is one

of his best along with joe pesci It's a real.

I mean is a long story it it encompasses his

entire life But I think it's in the black and

white cinematography. It's a gorgeous movie to

watch Yeah, reaching bulls I'm surprised it's

not a little bit higher. I guess it's not, it's

not that entertaining of a sports movie. It's

not, you know, Rocky is probably more fun and

it's an easier watch. But I think Raging Bull

by far is an absolute masterpiece of her movie.

And it's been on all kinds of different lists.

You know, it was nominated for Academy Awards.

So a lot of critical acclaim here. And yet to

me, you know. De Niro's had so many good movies,

but this is near the top for his his filmography

So wait a second was this the first time that

Pesci and De Niro worked together No, they did

they're either a taxi driver by the time this

film came out. Okay. I was gonna say because

I'm flashing to Tommy and and Jimmy from Goodfellas

Yeah, this wasn't the first but it was one of

many Yeah, so I don't think anyone can argue

with raging bull being on a top 10 list. I I

would actually put it even higher I had at number

three on my list but very happy that it's on

here and Definitely deserving. So now we've had

a boxing movie in there as well So that's our

first set of five there with Jerry Maguire the

longest yard the wrestler remember the Titans

and raging bull Moving into our next group of

five here our top five Finally, finally, finally,

we're going to hear from the world of baseball,

which is my favorite sport, by the way. Anyway,

going to 1988's Kevin Costner film Bull Durham

at number five. Kind of going back to what we

talked about before with the romantic comedy

of Jerry Maguire here as sports, but to me, this

is much more than romantic comedy. This is way

more sports film than Jerry Maguire was, obviously.

Kevin Costner is amazing in this movie. Obviously.

He's done a plethora of baseball films But crash

Davis is a great character the whole idea of

you know kind of being the old Wiley veteran

There's some interesting scenes with the owners

and they you know the higher -ups that they're

dealing with Susan strand and Tim Robbins You

know pretty good cast here, and I'm very happy

that this movie made the list. It's one of my

favorite Sports movies. I had it at number two

on my list Mike have you seen this one? I Haven't

actually said it's your list. I know I got to

add it to my list, but however and you know We

as a you guess you're an hour call about free

promotion I did listen to for better or worse,

which is a podcast on earth to net they What

they do Mike and Shane on husband and wife they?

Talk about a film and then they recast it if

it was gonna be made today Or they redo the plot

and they didn't think this film was that great.

I'm not gonna make my own prediction They're

the only people I've ever heard say anything

bad about this movie then well Anyway, um, I

do want to see this. I just I don't know like

Like Kevin Costner in baseball to me is field

of dreams. That's, that's what it is. Like I

was, you know, I was more into field of dreams

than, than Bull Durham. And what I will say though

is for trivia buffs out there, this is where

Tim Robbins and Susan Serendez started their

20 year relationship and marriage and all that.

So that's interesting. Dan, your thoughts on

Bull Durham. Yeah, I love for Durham. I'm surprised

they those people said they didn't like it I

have a really soft spot for minor league baseball.

I grew up in a town We don't look like a minor

league team and there's certain sense of pride

with that and I think that Well Durham really

nails that and it's a really great representation

of that conundrum of minor league baseball. You

have those, you know, young up -and -comers,

those veterans who didn't ever quite make it.

And I think that relationship between Kevin Costner

and Robbins is fantastic. A lot of great lines.

I grew up playing baseball as well. And one of

the movies you quote a lot is definitely Bull

Durham. And I think it does balance those comedic

elements with the actual relationship elements

really well. Talking about cliches, I think this

is one that really avoids them for the most part.

There aren't really any cliches in this. It's

really a great, like I said, a great representation

of what Miami League baseball really is. And

the hijinks that go on and the relationships

between people that are struggling to try to

make it, it's just there's some really cool dynamics

in this. And this is Kevin Costner in his heyday.

So yeah, definitely very happy that Bill Durham

is on the list. Interesting where we're going

to go to next, though. We have not heard from

this sport yet. Our number four film on our list

is going to the sport of hockey, I guess. Going

to 1992 and the Mighty Ducks. The Flying V! Oh

god, I love this movie. I love the entire franchise.

All three of these films that came out for this,

but this one specifically. It was when Emilio

Estevez actually acted. I don't mind the love

for this film. I could see it making like a family

movie list or I don't know, something else. But

when I think of sports movies, I do not think

of The Mighty Ducks. Yeah, as a kid, The Mighty

Ducks and The Mighty Ups 2, those were two of

my favorite films growing up as a kid. I loved

both of them, especially the second one. I think

that was probably my favorite. Like watching

it now as an adult, being more objective, it's

a little bit harder of a watch. I mean, it's

kind of, some of the comedy doesn't play as well.

It's kind of, they do a lot of the fast motion

for no apparent reason, but. I mean, I guess

a lot of people are voting based upon nostalgia,

which I guess is part of it. If we're making

a list of kid sports movies, then we could have

this. We could have Angels in the Outfield. We

could have Bad News Bears and Sandlot and a lot

of those films and see which one was the best

amongst those. But to me, you can't compare those

to the other films we're talking about, like

Bull Durham and Raging Bull and The Wrestler.

Yeah, having it above Raging Bull just feels

wrong. Feels very, very wrong. Mike but you love

this film so we will give you I like this film

it's a really cool film it's it's more of a sports

comedy than anything else it's so funny and just

how different all of the kids are you know you've

got Goldberg the goalie who doesn't want to be

the goalie because they use them as a basically

a puck punching bag basically And then you've

got Fulton, who is basically this amazing slap

shot, but he needs to be aimed in the right,

you know, it's kind of like a cannon. You've

got to aim it in the right direction to hit your

target. And it's just amazing. And it's always

amazing to me. I forget, and I'm kind of looking

through the cast here, looking for his name,

but I'm, yeah, Mr. Duxworth, Joseph Summer. I

love when I see him in films. I don't know what

it is about him, but I've always, ever since

The Mighty Ducks, every time I see him, I'm like,

hey, it's Mr. Ducksworth. What's he doing in

this movie? It's so cool. But Emilio Estevez,

outside of the whole fact that this is a kid's

hockey movie, even as a lawyer slash coach, he

really nails the comedy in this. Well, he's great

in this. To me, though, where the movie suffers

is the same as all these other kids' sports movies,

where it's a bunch of misfits and this person's

going to take that position and this person's

going to take that. We're going to find a star

somewhere out in the fields. Bailing hey, and

I don't know. It's just like it's like Bad news

barriers slash Sandlot all wrapped up into one

and just put on a hockey rink instead And you

got what's interesting about this movie is you

have a very young Pacey Joshua Jackson Joshua

Jackson before Dawson's Creek That's true. You

also have Lane Smith as Jack Riley good old lane

smith oh man i miss him he was by far one of

the best perry whites ever in lois and clark

the new adventures of superman but as far as

the movie goes yes i do agree this probably should

have been number 10 number nine it's not better

than raging bull or any of the other more serious

movies but i'm glad it made the list No, I'm

just kidding. All right, as long as there's no

more hockey films. We'll be all right I hate

hockey anyway going to our number three film

on the list and going back to baseball But staying

in the land of comedy. We're gonna go to 1989's

Major League Tom Berenger Charlie Sheen Wesley

Snipes Bob Euker It's hard to beat a sports comedy.

It's hard to find a sports comedy better than

Major League Hmm. Yeah, the funny thing is I

saw the sequel first Pedro Serrano and his voodoo

Ricky Vaughn Gosh everything about this movie

was was hilarious to me at the time when I saw

it which I was the right age You know, I was

about eight or nine probably when I saw it for

the first time. So it was perfect I love this

movie. It's not my favorite baseball movie or

my favorite sports movie, but when it comes to

actual like sports comedies Major League is probably

my favorite and I would say probably Bad News

Bears is actually my second favorite sports comedy

Dan, what do you think about Major League? I

love Major League. It's one of the best sports

comedies like you mentioned a lot of great characters

so many endless amounts You know from the fans

to the you know, the announcer, you know, just

a bit outside talking about cool I say that all

the time by the way almost every week. I say

that at some point Talking about quotes like

this is another one that has a lot of great quotes

in it I mean, I love the movie so much actually

saw, you know major league back to the minors

in the theater, which was not a good decision

But yeah, it's great I mean Wesley Snipes is

also great like he I love his character of you

know, Willie Mays Hayes and It's just Dennis

Haysbert as Pedro Serrano just blows me away

in that movie though. Yeah, such a badass Even

Tom Berringer was was pretty good. Obviously

he was he was a straight man But he had his head

as moments and then wild thing Charlie Sheen

before he was legitimately crazy Younger Rene

Russo in there and Got a lot of people and I

got a 85 % on Rotten Tomatoes debuted at number

one in the box office actually back in the day

when it came out So I am glad since like I said,

it's my favorite sports comedy that it is on

our list And I'm surprised at how high it is,

but I'm not complaining. It's number three Mike

any thoughts I I do like all the characters.

I thought they were all really really well done.

And again anything was it before When did the

chase come out? 96 97 anything before 1998 with

Charlie Sheen was damn good Anything past 99

to now sucks. Yeah, at least in my personal opinion

Because we all know Steve loves to be winning

winning All right, so giving a breakdown real

quick of where our sports lie here before we

get to our top two we've had our sports agent

We'll call that one Sports Agent with Jaren McGuire.

We've had two football, a wrestling, a boxing,

a hockey, and two baseball. All right. So going

into our number two film here, we're going to

have our second boxing film. Any predictions?

Rocky. Yes, the original Rocky. Obviously no

surprise that there's a rocky film somewhere

on our list. Like I said Four different rocky

films got votes we did have you know, like like

Dan pointed out it was one of those things like

we mentioned with the action films where This

movie actually had enough sequels where it might

have heard it as far as people deciding which

one to vote for But yeah the one with Apollo

Creed and Rocky Balboa was this 1976 Comes in

at number two. Mike, why don't you start with

this one? Well, obviously we're all too young

to have seen this in theaters unless it was on

a theater re -release. Again, I know this is

bad, but I saw the third film before the first

one. I've gone back and I've watched the Rocky

movies. I think they're all very good, but I

think this one is by far the best and I'm glad

that this one made the number two spot. I don't

know, I think that it's so strange when you look

at the late 70s into the 80s and look at Sylvester

Stallone's acting roles. Rocky, Rambo, you know

you've got all these things that he's he's been

in and it's so interesting how diverse he can

make his characters are even if it's like uh...

you know people say oh well it's not the actors

they're they're just doing a job and what's on

people have to actually act on these things and

and you know people give arnold and stalone and

all these cliched quote -unquote cliched eighties

actors They always make fun of them because their

lines, but if you think about it, that's that

character. That's how that character is and because

Stallone is who he is, he can make it work. You

know, everyone gives his judge dread shit. Everybody

says that with that movie, but with this one,

it's like, how many people have said, you know,

Adrian? I mean, hell, even Mikey did it in 1990

with the turtles. You know, I mean... This film

is so good. It tells such a great story and it's,

yeah, it's so good. Dan, your thoughts on the

original Rocky being the Rocky that's on our

list? Definitely the right choice compared to

all the other Rockies. I think some of them,

I mean, if I'm going to watch one for entertainment

value, probably Rocky IV because of, you know,

the Russian -American conflict. It's probably

the most, more entertaining one, but... The better

film is clearly the original Rocky and not you

talked about Sylvester Stallone's acting ability

But he also wrote the film as well and he's a

better filmmaker than people give him credit

for he I mean He knows how to make movies and

he knows how to like tell stories and stuff in

the case with Rocky I kind of have a personal

grudge against Rocky because it won Best Picture

in 76 and my favorite one of my favorite films

Network should have won that year, but besides

that, on its own accord, Rocky is a pretty fantastic

movie. Again, it's funny watching it and seeing

it today and how little boxing is actually in

that movie. The final fight scene is minuscule

compared to the other Rocky films, which are

mostly all fight scenes or boxing moments, but

it's really about that in a lot of ways. It's

more of a relationship film than... you know

bulldorum or even jerry maguire in a lot of ways

so and uh steve had this as the only rocky film

on his list dan that was the only rocky film

on on your list mike you had this one ahead of

rocky 3 um and jt had this one ahead of the modern

day rocky baboa and ahead of rocky 2 and ahead

of rocky 3 um it's funny no one even listed four

or five and i didn't i didn't even have a rocky

on my list just because i For some reason I've

never really been exposed to that franchise Before

I remember as Dan said was was the Russian but

I don't remember what five was at all It's not

it's the worst one by far. It's with he's not

even it's he trains this guy named Tommy gun

Oh, that's I remember that is a waste. So five

is worse than Balboa. I actually like Rocky Balboa.

I think that's really It's one of the better

if I would have ranked that as number two of

all the print of all the films But five is easily

the worst. He rocky doesn't really even fight

in it until the end. He has like a street fight

It's it is actually horrible So before we before

we get to our number one, um, you know We're

doing this whole afi based off of the afi's top

10 of their 10 genres And most of ours, you know,

we try to make them more, we try to make them

different genres. We try to make where we could

make it be more, a little bit slanted towards,

you know, the geek culture. But there are occasional

times here throughout our 10 genres that we are

doing ones that they did. And this is one of

them. They did do fantasy, which we will eventually

do. They did science fiction, which we will eventually

do. And they did sports. So these are the three

that we will have in common. So when we do show

up on those, I will revert back today if I list

just to give fans an idea of what was on their

list. And then the other seven genres that we

did, they did not touch. And when they did this

top 10, top 10, um, but going down their list

for sports, they had their number 10 film was

Jerry Maguire. So, I guess we thought alike on

that one. Their number 9 film was an old one

which we wouldn't have voted for because it was

against our rules, the 1944's National Velvet.

Their number 8 was Breaking Away. Number 7 was

Caddyshack, which we had eligible only on the

comedy list. Number 6, they had 1961's The Hustler.

Their number 5 was Bull Durham, which we also

had on our list. Their number 4 was Hoosiers,

which we talked about in the honorable mentions.

Their number three was The Pride of the Yankees

from 1942. Shut up, Boston fan. Their number

two was Rocky. So we actually had two films right

on the mark from what they had and Raging Bull

we just had off, or I'm sorry, Bull Durham we

just had off by one film and their number one

was Raging Bull. So we did have four films that

were the same. Just thought that was kind of

interesting to go over their list before we got

to our number one, which I cannot believe was

not on their list. It is my favorite sports film

of all time and it is Back to Baseball. So baseball

gets the crown with three films and it's 1989

again with Kevin Costner and it's Field of Dreams.

I don't care what I know a lot of people have

bad stuff to say about this film and people rip

on a blah, blah, blah, blah. this film Just transported

me to a magical place when I was a kid Yeah,

Kevin Costner freaking Ray Liotta and James Earl

Jones like I mean you can't go wrong with Darth

Vader as a baseball expert. It was just I You

know again, we're talking about stuff. That's

become part of the lexicon with you know, like

With what you said with Rocky? Yeah line there

or with just a bit outside You know if you build

it they will come or he will come I mean who

doesn't know that line from our generation This

film I love baseball. It's my favorite sport.

This is my favorite baseball film. This is my

favorite sports film I love Kevin Costner in

general and this was him at his peak almost and

man, there's just something cool and Awesome

about the idea of these people You know into

the cornfield being able to come back out and

play the game they love And it was just mystical

and magical and I can't say enough about it dan.

What do you think about field of dreams? I love

field of dreams. It was number three on my list.

Uh it What I think the the final moments of field

of dreams like I guess I don't want to spoil

it for those who haven't seen it But it's just

it kind of gets to the heart of what sports can

be and sometimes not to sound cheesy But sometimes

it's not about like winning or like winning championships

But that relationship that he is able to kind

of come the grips with at the end is one of is

just one of the best Scenes out of any sports

movie. I love the mystery behind it. Just like

it's that a theme of just being able to believe

and kind of going for something when you don't

know what's going to happen. And like you said,

I also love that monologue back. I can listen

to that on loops and I love that. You're going

to have to repeat that, Dan. You broke up there

for a second, so just repeat what you just said.

From everything? Just the monologue part. The

monologue part. Okay. Another aspect of that

is James Hills Journal Jones' monologue about

baseball and how it will endure over time. I

can listen to that on loop endlessly. He has

great delivery on that. It's just a great...

That is such a good speech, too. Yeah. It is.

It's great. I love Field of Dreams. In talking

about sports movies, we kind of had a variety

of different ones. Those are romantic comedies.

Those are kind of... playing out comedies or

dramas and it's great that we ended in one with

its you know part sports film part fantasy film

it's kind of yeah well in this one i should i

should say i kind of steered us a little bit

wrong with the listing the sports films that

afi had listed because they did have field of

dreams listed on one of their top 10 genres but

they had it listed on the fantasy list and they

had it as their sixth best fantasy film of all

time I realize that there's part fantasy on this

film, but this is a sports film to me. Yeah,

it is definitely a sports film. This is a film

about baseball, the game, and why people that

love baseball love baseball. And it's, you know,

people outside of baseball that don't like it,

you know, really can't understand or grasp just

the nuances about the game and what it means

as, you know, as a coming of age sport, really.

You know, everyone grows up. playing baseball

as a kid and wanting to be a major league player

and all this other stuff and it's just like a

part of being an American it's just just a fantastical

movie um and it did uh so like i said it did

make number six on afi's fantasy list it got

88 on rotten tomatoes uh heaver gave it four

stars out of four you know it does get a lot

of critical acclaim but i know a lot of people

hate on it too um but just the characters and

like i said shoeless joe is fantastic Uh, he's

a fantastic story. I've loved his whole story

besides the fact that they haven't corrected

the errors that they've made with that yet. Um,

but James R. Jones too is just fantastic there.

So anyway, I could, I could rave about this a

long time. Mike, you want to say anything else

about feel the dreams you had at number one on

your list? Yeah. Feel the dreams. Like when I

made my list, I thought of like from worst to

best. There are a few that I skewed in there

a bit like some like on my personal list summer

catch even though I love that movie I could not

legitimately put it in the top 10 it came in

at number 12 on my list You know with field of

dreams being number one It's because it's a feel

-good baseball movie and as you said Kevin everybody's

like oh You know actually you know what I'm gonna

go back to my episode 60 and quote Mr.. Eccleston

Christopher Eccleston and gone in 60 seconds.

Baseball, I just can't, I just don't understand

it. It's bleeding boring. I don't, anyone that

says baseball is boring, watch a football game

that neither team scores for the first quarter

and a half of the game. That's boring to me.

There is nothing more exciting than seeing a

player hit the ball, a pop fly. And whether the

outfielders are either going to catch it or they're

going to run into each other and knock each other

down. Baseball, to me, is the most exciting sports

out of the four major sports. Out of baseball,

football, hockey, and basketball. And I'm talking

professional stuff, not that NCAA asshole crap.

Even though I know that's where most of the pros

end up coming from is college. But that's all

another... topic another time but baseball for

me because growing up in boston and loving the

red sox and sure i like other baseball teams

but obviously the red sox are my team but it's

one of those things where this movie was just

it didn't matter what team you liked it was you

know players coming back to play again it's honestly

this and the rookie have the most like outside

of the whole fantasy aspect of this film. This

and The Rookie have the most in common out of

all the baseball films we've talked about tonight.

I think it's cool that they kept Field of Dreams

as a place you could visit. Not too far from

me also in Dyersville, Iowa. That just adds to

the magic of this film. Here's something that

you might not know. I feel like dropping the

trivia on you. This you might appreciate this

Mike But did you know among the thousands of

extras in the Fenway Park scene that an unknown

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were there? That is

awesome, and that does not surprise uncredited,

but Affleck Talked about it later on and that

once he was you know obviously famous that both

of them were in the amongst the extras on that

one scene before How many different parks did

they go to in that movie? They went to Boston,

they went to different places to find all of

these players, and just the sheer fact that they

decided to go to Fenway was just so awesome.

Also, your last bit of trivia before I stop talking

about this movie, but Tom Hanks originally offered

the role of Ray Kinsella. I'm sorry, ladies and

gentlemen, I cannot see. pissing Jimmy Duggan

as or do again as I cannot see Tom Hanks. I can't

see this movie with anybody but Kevin Costner,

Janseril Jones and Ray Lio. Oh yeah exactly exactly.

So yeah I'm very happy that this movie came in

I knew I was hoping it would be on the list I

didn't know it would be on all the way up to

number one. But I think it definitely deserves

to be in any top 10, as I do think and kind of

give our thoughts about the list overall. I think

Rocky for sure is a top 10. I think Field of

Dreams is for sure a top 10. I'm happy that Bull

Durham and Regent Bull are there. And like I

said, Major League to me is the... the best sports

comedy of all time. And as far as modern movies,

I think The Wrestler has its place. So I can

see all of those. I don't really have a gripe

with Jerry Maguire. I guess my biggest gripes

would probably be The Longest Yard and Mighty

Ducks. And maybe Remember the Titans. I'm not

sure on that one how I feel. Dan, what are your

thoughts on the list overall? I think overall

it's pretty strong. There are some issues there

like you mentioned like Lee Longis Yard and the

Mighty Ducks. Two movies I enjoy but I think

when you look at the honorable mentions there

are a lot of better options that we could have

chosen from. I think Moneyball and The Fighter

would be two that jump off my head that would

be better spots for those. Yeah, I agree. Our

top film being Feel the Dreams, I think that's

a good choice. I think there's a lot of ways

you can go with it. There's a lot of, I mean,

We talked about the best sports films people

have different ideas. Some people say region

build like AFI ESPN had Hoosiers, but I feel

the dream is a legitimate choice for best sports

film just because of all the different Areas

that can head so I'm happy with it overall. Obviously,

it's not perfect. But you know, no list is Mike

your thoughts on the list overall I enjoy the

list. I think it's a good list. I do think that

The Longest Yard and The Mighty Ducks could have

been 9 and 10, and then everything else above

those. I do enjoy The Mighty Ducks. I like The

Longest Yard, but it's not... The Longest Yard

is not a movie that I would actively seek out

and watch. You know, it's kind of like what our

number two rating is over on MY. Free if it's,

you know, it's worth a watch if it's free on

TV. I'm not saying it's a bad movie. I just don't

think it should be. where it is I was surprised

at the variety of sports we got to even though

there are three baseball films and we do have

two boxing films and two football films but that's

still three sports and we have hockey in there

wrestling the only sport really that got completely

shut out there would be basketball basketball

I'm really surprised that that did because there

are some damn like I would have to say and I

and I'm just James Hoosiers and the way men can't

jump would be my top three basketball films probably

For me, I don't know about top three, but one

of my favorite basketball films is, I don't know,

this is probably gonna sound cheesy and corny

or whatever else, it's from 2000. And it's basically

the journey of Q. And it's got Mr. Dennis Haysbert

in it, love and basketball. I don't know why.

I do actually like that film. I love that movie

because it shows... the journey that a player

has to take it it shows the dark side of of of

sports it it shows all these different things

and it's it's basically about a a basketball

couple that fell in love as kids and I I really

do enjoy that film I I should have put it you

know on my list somewhere I just I wasn't think

I was thinking of when I made my list I was thinking

of on one side of my brain I had oh what are

some of my favorites like fever pitch like summer

catch, like Sandlot. And then I thought, what

are the best? What are the ones that are, you

know, people are really going to gravitate towards?

Now, I know everyone has their favorite teams

and everything else and every single team in

every sport has its own history and genre, but

I have to say this here. Fever pitch was the

single best look into the way Boston Red Sox

fans are. It was not overrated whatsoever. It

was not exaggerated at all. That's what... Most

Boston fans, Western Red Sox fans, aren't that

extreme, but we can get that extreme as Ben did

in that movie. And I just like that movie overall,

because it's just a really cool and unique movie.

I'm really surprised. I guess I'm kind of surprised

and not surprised. I didn't mention this in the

honorable mentions, but I'm surprised that...

Space Jam didn't make it Yeah, I think I would

say that for some other less probably but uh

The other sport the guy was left out if you want

to call the sport would be golf I guess tin cup

would probably be the closest that you'd have

for that sport Yeah, and again, you've got another

Kevin Costner sport. Oh my god. Okay, Kevin Costner

Cheech Marin and Don Johnson Cannot believe the

three of them in that movie. Oh my god And then

of course Cheech and Don would go on later and

do Nash Bridges on TV. But anyway But yeah, no

tin cup What else? technically sports, but I'm

surprised that Where did we end up discuss deciding

where karate kid would go that sports or is that

something else? I think that was more on the

either coming a major family one of those But

karate kid, if you want to count karate as a

sport, you know. Yeah. But overall, yeah, not

too bad of a list. So we went from Jerry Maguire

to the longest yard, to the wrestler. Remember

the Titans, Raging Bull, Bull Durham, Mighty

Ducks, Major League, Rocky, and Field of Dreams.

Those are our top 10 sports films for the GeekCast

Radio Network. And what's coming up next, Mike?

Join us next time when we will be... telling

coming -of -age stories, the top 10 coming -of

-age films. This is going to be one of the more

interesting records, I think. It's going to be

interesting to see how many people put lists

in and where they put stuff on their lists. We

already have five lists, so we'll most likely

have at least six or seven. Yeah, but yeah those

films to me are interesting because you know

it also a coming -of -age film is about a specific

time and a specific you know kind of journey

in your life and It's something that you can

relate to But it's also interesting to see how

much the films that are doing that at the same

time that you were doing that Have an effect

on you, and how does that play into it? It's

just a it's a little bit more complex a genre

to look at I think yeah and i will automatically

agree that my number one is very very biased

my personal number one is very very biased but

i think a lot of not necessarily just the geeks

but a lot of people are going to gravitate towards

that episode because of how much variety we would

we would have put into that list depending on

who voted on what But just looking at my own

personal list, I tried to make it as variety,

as variety heavy as possible. And I just went

with movies that I really, really, really enjoyed.

Like my top 10 are, with the exception of maybe

two movies on my top 10, I watch the rest of

them all the time. Yeah, these are definitely

movies you can watch over and over again. So

I will be interested to see how everything. And

that's just my top 10, not even counting the

other 20. For those that don't know how we're

making these, and we mentioned this earlier in

the very beginning of the thing, but I think

we need to refine people. Every one of us that

submits a list, we submit a list of 20. Kevin

then does his mathematical genius crap and whittles

it down to the top 10. So even stuff that's in

my top 20, I still watch maybe, out of those

10, I probably still watch six of them all the

time. You know so it's gonna be interesting in

episode 45 with the coming of age films And I

believe we're gonna have Mike Dodd on that one

with us Be us three with Mike Dodd All right

That's gonna do it here on geek cast radio for

the top ten sports films You will the next couple

of weeks you're gonna hear actually next week.

You'll hear Kevin and I talking about the battles

for the voice and then of course the week after

that will be the coming -of -age films and we'll

go from there for now for Geekcast Radio I am

TF Joe and Mike with Movie Revolve Dan and Optimus

Solo Unleash the movie geeks in you we will catch

you next time 15 years ago. You got your shot

at baseball. You got hurt. Jimmy Morris put his

dreams aside. Coach. Counselor. Don't report

that Esther. I never do. But sometimes. Hey coach,

you want to throw? I'll throw a couple. Yeah

dad, bring the heat. When you least expect it.

Oh my god! Dreams come back to life. I threw

today. So hard. Pretty hard. Anybody want to

tell me how we lost that game? You quit out there.

I'm talking about having dreams. You don't have

dreams, you don't have anything. You're the one

who should be wanting something more. Last time

I checked, Scouts aren't looking for high school

science teachers. We start winning, you try out

again. Are you serious? Yeah. All right. To the

District Champion hours. Now it's your turn,

coach. It started as a simple bet. I promised

to try out. It was this thing to get the kids

to start playing. It became the most incredible

true story. Rule number one is armor slow down

when they get old. In baseball history. From

the studio that brought you Remember the Titans.

We've got an eight -year -old boy who waited

all day in the rain to see his daddy try to do

something that nobody believed he could do. Now

what are we telling him if you don't try now?

This spring... You bringing some kids? Beside

your own? I'm here for me. For you. Jimmy, come

on, you're up. Just a second. I'm not doing it.

Don't hurt yourself. His dream was impossible.

You the old guy? I'm the old guy. How fast were

you throwing 15 years ago? 85, 86. You just threw

98 miles an hour. No. But his journey was extraordinary.

To Coach Jimmy Morris, the man who taught us

about wanting something more. Dennis Quaid. Do

you know how many guys can throw the ball 98

miles an hour? Yes! Not me anyway. The Rookie.

You are the cream of the college crop. This little

summer league is one step away from getting paid

to play baseball. You're as good as any of those

guys out there. Dude, what are you doing? For

these ballplayers... Take your time around the

corner. Getting to the majors... It's my half

-mom. Is she married? ...takes courage. She's

over 40. She's only enough to be my mom. I'm

real good. It takes commitment. I like a big

girl. A large, voluptuous, full -figured, massive

honey. Anybody got a problem with that? Okay.

And sometimes, the best catch in town is right

in front of you. So you mow her lawn? Allow me

to introduce you to a good friend of mine. This

is Ryan Dune. Dun, dun. I saw you at the game.

Those outfits are cute. Nice. And they're nice.

And they're cool. It's cool. Okay, I'm gonna

shut up now. This summer, Warner Bros. presents

Freddie Prinze Jr., Jessica Biel, and Matthew

Lillard. I need more garbage from you guys. And

you're warming the sticky vinyl of bussy back

to mommy. We got more than that, son. Come on,

kid. Get up. I got it. You've been giving this

shit. You get the start tomorrow. What the pit's

the biggest game of my life? Why are you so scared?

You want big rewards? You gotta take big risks.

You are out of there! Summer catch. This is Billy

Brubaker, our catcher. Nice thong. I have just

created something totally illogical. I like about

it. If you build it, he will come. If you build

it, he will come. If you build what, who will

come? Insane. I hate it when that happens. Me

too. Who's hearing voices? Ray is. if you build

it, he will come means. Ooh, why do I not think

this is such a good thing? Daddy, there's a man

up there on your wall. Are you a ghost? What

do you think? You look real to me. Hi. You couldn't

see it. This is really interesting. You believed

in the magic. It happened. Isn't that enough?

Annie, it's more than that. I feel it as strongly

as I've ever felt anything in my life. There's

a reason. Go the distance. Did you hear the voice

too? Did you hear it? Go the distance. Yes. Our

Grave is dead. He died in 1972. Are you Moonlight

Graham? No one's called me Moonlight Graham in

50 years. Unbelievable. It's more than that.

It's perfect. You build a baseball field in the

middle of nowhere and you sit here and you stare

at nothing. This field... This game is a part

of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once

was good. Hey, is this heaven? No. It's Iowa.

Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones,
