About this Episode

Mike and Paul explore what makes a one-hit wonder, from classical pieces like "Cannon in D" to 80s and 90s chart-toppers like "She Blinded Me with Science" and "Hey Mickey." They discuss how artists struggle to replicate early success, examine songs that became famous through movie soundtracks, and debate whether certain bands are fairly labeled as one-hit wonders—including surprising examples like Faith No More and the Goo Goo Dolls. The episode also touches on manufactured hits, boy bands, and why some artists get typecast after initial success.

Radio Episode 34 These are your one -hit wonders.

Your host, Mike TFG when blanchard, Paul Optimonymous

Reinhardt. Welcome to GeekCast Radio episode

34. This will continue the epic music spotlight

we have planned here at GCR. And trust me, it's

almost over, ladies and gentlemen. We've been

going almost 11 months with this music spotlight.

I think since like last October or November.

Or not 11 months. It's been a while. At least

six months. Something like that. I don't know.

I don't know how to do math. Shut up. What's

math? Yeah, exactly. What the fuck is math good

for? to you, Jim and Mike, and joining me is

the muthafuckin' Optabotamus. Good evening, good

afternoon, hello, hello. Yes, hello sir, how

are you? I'm doing well, nothing too - Outside

of the scratches and wounds you have all over

yourself. Yeah, that's for a whole nother podcast

that will - It's a bloody botamus, ladies and

gentlemen. Yeah. If you hear random screaming

in the background, it's clear I'm not tormenting

or torturing any of my cats. They're tormenting

you. Yeah, it's me who's being tortured and tormented.

Although, as of right now, she is perched on

my shoulder, literally laying down. Well, at

least she's laying down. Yeah, but you're not

going to be able to do this for much longer,

I can promise you that. If she gets to be the

size of Louie and trying to do this we will have

problems I would assume she would get the size

of burger Probably I don't know sure I mean when

burger was young We could already tell that she

was gonna be a big girl because her paws were

fairly big in her She had very long legs even

as a even as a little kitten Luna here is very

stubby so we're not a hundred percent sure if

if We're kind of guessing in between Burger and

Gracie. Yeah, you don't know if she's gonna grow

long or if she's just gonna poof out and be one

of those old fat cats. Exactly, which it's possible

because our cats are all fat asses. Well, Burger.

I mean Burger's not, but Burger, I mean the difference

between Burger is Burger eats the same amount

of food that Louie does, but Louie's a lazy ass

who just eats it and lays down. Burger goes out

and she... kills rats and birds and you know,

she's very active. Yeah. Luna started - There

you go ladies and gentlemen. Oh, son of a monkey.

Yeah, get up there. Oh my god. Anyhow, it's funny.

So we are here to talk about One Hit Wonders.

Yes. It surprises me how many of these there

are versus other stuff that the artists that

have created them have made and just hasn't caught

on. I mean, just to read from Wikipedia here

for a minute, One Hit Wonder is a person or act

known mainly for only a single success. The term

is most often used to describe music performers

with only one hit single. So yeah, I think we

are going to I think we're going to let Mrs.

Flynn Fletcher describe what one -hit wonders

are in Phineas and Ferb's universe and we'll

be back after that. Too bad you can't just do

it once and move on. Well, what you're talking

about is a one -hit wonder. A one -hit wonder?

What's that? Well, a musical act goes to the

top of the charts with a catchy tune and meaningless

lyrics. Then they throw a big diva tantrum lose

their label and they fade to obscurity before

you know it their song ends up as Elevator music

years later. They have a reunion concert And

after that they never sing again So we are back

and we have four different topics that we are

gonna be talking about The first one essentially

being the one -hit wonder process what that means

is when I wrote that out, it's essentially you

know, you you'll have an act or a musical actor,

a band that creates an album and they have just

one song off of that, they have one single off

of that that gets hugely popular, and then that's

all they're ever known for. Yeah. Now, I mean,

conversely, there are a lot of times where an

artist will release an album where only really

one song on it is good, but... they're able to

replicate that success, you know, over and over

again. You know, for example, like... God, let

me think of... I can't... Nobody's coming to

mind. You know, but I mean, there's a lot of

times where there's only one song on an album

that gets airplay, for example. You know, I mean,

it's very common, even amongst, you know, very

popular artists. And things of that nature. That's

why, I mean, in my opinion, that's why a lot

of times things like iTunes has become so successful

because people don't want to pay, you know, for

an entire album. Exactly. They just want one

song or something like that. That's the one song

they like. You know, so I mean, it's been like

that in history, but we're talking about an artist

or a group or something who has repeatedly tried,

after one successful song, To create that success

again, and they just for some reason they fail

miserably and it happens Countless times. I mean

this this isn't something that's new I mean looking

at the Wikipedia article, you know one of the

biggest in this I mean I actually kind of knew

this I can't ever I can't ever say the guy's

name right, but one of the biggest one -hit wonders

is um cannon in D which is a classical song.

A lot of people probably know it. It's a very

common song that's used for weddings and things

of that nature. It's orchestral. That's all it

is. Yohan Patchable or something like that. I

know it was played at my wedding. That's all

the guys really known for, that one song, and

that was forever ago. So One Hit Wonders had

been around for a very long time. Not everybody

could be a Mozart. But speaking of Mozart, there's

a very popular Mozart related song that's a One

Hit Wonder. But like stuff like She Blinded Me

With Science by Thomas Dolby. Yeah. That's the

only song I ever knew from him was that song.

And I didn't even know his name. I just knew

the song. Right. I mean, that's a mark of a very

big one -hit wonder. If you know the song instantly

by hearing it, but you have no idea who actually

sings it. That's a one -hit wonder. I mean, looking

at some of these, they got a list on here. This

is the Australian list from 2005. I mean, without

knowing or looking at any of the performers,

I know every single one of these songs, but I

have no idea who any of these singers are. Right.

Well, except for tub thumping. Tub thumping,

that's just because that's a silly name. I mean,

it was really kind of funny. But you know, there's

tub thumping. There's, you know, oh, tainted

love. I mean, you know, don't worry, be happy

now. That one I instantly also associate with

the music video because Robin Williams was in

that music video. I had no idea who sings it.

Bobby McFerrin. Right, exactly. The only reason

why I know that is because it's on the Cocktail

soundtrack, the 1988 Tom Cruise movie. All these

songs, who let the dogs out? These are all songs

that almost everybody knows. One of the biggest

ones for me is... uh and and a lot because it

was in a movie that is often described as being

a uh coming -of -age movie when you know when

i was young it's uh from the breakfast club and

that's um don't you forget about me yeah uh i

still can't even tell you who sings it if you

mentioned if you probably told me i would probably

be like yep that's right but Off the top of my

head. I can't tell you who sings that song But

I mean that's that's one of the biggest I believe

it's I believe it's a band called simple minds.

That's it. That's it. Yeah, that's it. That's

it I mean it but these are groups that you never

heard of again, and they've all tried to replicate

their success and Couldn't do it and It doesn't

necessarily mean that they're a bad group Right

just a lot of times these songs come out and

they they strike a particular nerve at that time

You know or they speak to a certain I don't want

to say demographic but like a you know a Time

in history or something like that. I mean what

when I think of tub thumping, you know, I instantly

think back to a You know summertime when I was

going to an amusement park in Ohio with some

friends of mine. It's You know, you associate

things like that. I mean, I mean, I was looking

up here and, oh geez, I can't think of that.

She's Like the Wind by Patrick Swayze. Patrick

Swayze, yeah. Fantastic song. Everybody knows

who Patrick Swayze is. Nobody knows, you know,

most of the time, people don't, you know, unless

you're a big fan, you know, who knows that, a

lot of people don't recognize that that's Patrick

Swayze who's singing that song. The only reason

why I know that is because of my mom at the time

had the Dirty Dancing soundtrack back then. Same

with me. My mom and sister are Dirty Dancing

fanatics. They have every incarnation of it.

And in fact, for Christmas, I bought my mom a

new HDTV and a Blu -ray player. And one of the

very first things that I bought her, in terms

of Blu -Rays for her, was the Blu -Ray release

of Dirty Dancing. It's funny that a lot of movies

breed one -hit wonders when you think about it.

Especially in the 80s and early 90s, there's

a lot of these songs that are part of soundtracks.

that, you know, you think it, I mean, now, um,

another, uh, another huge one -hit wonder, Mickey.

Uh, Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine, you

blow my mind. Hey, Mickey. Yep. Hey, Mickey.

I know that song because of Wayne's World. Yeah.

That's why I know that song. You know, I mean,

and honestly, Bohemian Rapsody, now, not saying

that Queen was a one -hit wonder because they

absolutely were not. Right. The first time I

ever heard that song was because of Wayne's World.

Was because of Wayne's World, yeah. Was because

of Wayne's World. And that's where, you know,

I mean, that resurgence in the popularity of

Queen really came from, because of Wayne's World.

But there's so many movies that came out. You

know, I mean, you could go through so many of

the Brat Pack. I mean, I mentioned Breakfast

Club. You can go through so many of the Brat

Pack movies, and they're one -hit wonders in

it, you know. You know, yeah, well, John Parr,

who does Man in Motion, the theme for St. Elmo's

Fire. It's the only song I've ever heard from

John Parr is that song. Until he decided to brutalize

it with its updated version of that stupid football

player. I can't think of his name. uh... uh...

tim tebow yeah i i have not heard the updated

first i played it i played it on my you stream

one time and it made my ears bleed almost every

eighty song has something like that look you

know look at pretty in pink right there boom

i mean that's got one uh... i mean that the title

track for the movie weird science is a one hit

wonder you know i mean there's so many of those

movies from that time And it just seemed like

around then, that's, you know, and you can even

go back further. I mean, I can only attest to

this, you know, the timeframe that I've been

on this planet. If we included, you know, like

my parents in this conversation, I'm sure my

dad could rattle off songs that he grew up with

that I probably know, you know, to this day,

I probably know, but... They probably didn't

see that's the thing though like like in the

in the 60s in the 70s 60s specifically You know,

okay, the Beatles had a string of hits Oh take

a band like take a band like the love and spoonful.

I think I know two songs by them I can think

of I can think of one summer in the city and

magic Yeah, the only one I could come up with

was magic. Yeah You know, I mean, so One Hit

Wonders are not, like, it wasn't just a product

of the 80s and the 90s, but that's where we come

in on it, and that's, you know, not even the

fact that Los, whatever the hell their name is,

released an album, but the fact of how popular

Macarena was. Oh, Los Del Rios or whatever? Yeah,

whatever the hell their name is. But I mean,

how popular that song was, I think that's a problem

of what a One Hit Wonder is, is because look

how popular that song was. They could never top

it. They could never, like, even if they did

a sophomore album, I don't know if they did,

I'm not looking at their information here, but

even if they did a sophomore album, nothing is

going to top that song from them as far as what

they did artistically. because this song was

everywhere. And that's really where, like sometimes

when you are a one hit wonder, that's where your

downfall is. Well, I mean, you're absolutely

right. And one of the biggest, I mean, well,

I don't want to say one of the one of the biggest,

but I mean, a very, very well known group that

to this day, everybody knows them. It's the Goo

Goo Dolls. When Iris came out for the City of

Angels soundtrack. Yeah. Almost immediately after

it, there was a time that it was very difficult

to come up with any new songs. Because I can't

remember the guy's name, the lead singer. Johnny

Resnick. Thank you, Johnny Resnick. Came right

out and said that he thought that that was it.

he didn't think that there was a way that he

could actually top that because Iris was a gigantic

success and I mean he just hit this low afterwards

where he's like nothing is coming out that's

gonna sound nearly as good as Iris we're done

you know the fans over we're over and done with

they they hit their peak and well I mean they

continued on past Iris they did you're absolutely

right and that's what I'm you know I mean lot

of these people kind of hit this plateau where

they kind of give up Yeah, and it had been a

number of years though it yeah from from 98 to

2002 because 2002 is when they really is so it

had been like I hate math like it had been five

years. Yeah, it had been like four or five years

between Dizzy up the girl the the dizzy up the

girl album and yeah and the gutter flower album

simply because of what you just said, you know

You know certain artists, you know, that's that's

why certain artists go on the hiatus is that

they go on right? I mean you could take a band

and you're probably not gonna know them You might

have heard the song. There's a song called caught

in the Sun It's by a band called course of nature.

The lead singer is actually Melissa Joan Hart's

husband. Oh It's called Caught in the Sun. The

band is Course of Nature. They released that

in 2002. They released their album Super Cala

that year, and they took a six -year hiatus,

didn't release a sophomore album until 2008.

And their sophomore album was pretty damn good,

but people mainly know them for that one song,

Caught in the Sun. Right. I mean, there's the

unfortunate nature that ... people get instantly

you know when you have these one hit wonders

you kind of get the the fear that you're going

to be typecast yeah and you know that that's

you know where you get some you know artists

that have lasted for as long and the one that

i just first came to mind was madonna who is

able to reinvent their image and continue to

keep coming out you know that's where You know,

and I know you're gonna hate it, you're gonna

disagree, but I don't know if you know where

I'm going with this, but Stan Bush, as much as

everybody loves him, really is in the category

of a one -hit wonder. And not even, I mean, you

could even argue that he's not even in that category.

It's... I don't see him as a one hit wonder.

I will agree that he is a product of the times.

But he caters to that 80s audience. But that

80s audience is going away. Not as long as I'm

alive, it's not. You're right. It's unfortunate.

but there there's no way that he can he cannot

make it in today's music scene there's no way

he could well and he doesn't really like when

I've because I've interviewed him multiple times

when I was talking to him a couple years ago

in 2010 when he released his dream the dream

album the latest one that he had released I I

asked him Hayes is there a you know is there

a mass market thing for this is your are you

just doing this on your own he said essentially

I'm just doing it on my own, I'm getting the

word out through Facebook and Twitter and everything

else. It took the people that help him manage

his website and his social media, it actually

took his business partner to say, hey look, Stan,

MySpace is dead, you need to be on Facebook and

Twitter. No, seriously, you told me this. That's

really the only social media he was doing at

the time was MySpace still. and The thing with

Stan is he is a product of the times. I don't

think he like okay take The the best comparison

I can make is Hall and Oates in the 80s not not

to say that they're a one -hit wonder but In

the 80s they had multiple hits multiple albums

and they had their unique sound whereas nowadays

Darryl Hall individually, he does his show live

from Darrell's house where, you know, he'll get

together with someone like Rob Thomas or the

guys from Finger 11 or CeeLo Green, you know,

just different artists that he wants to work

with. He's just gonna have a jam session. Right,

just have a jam session. It's a live internet

web show every month on the 15th, and they'll

have a jam session. They'll do a couple of whoever

the guest songs are, and they'll do a couple

of... Hit either his songs or Hall and Oates

songs, but those versions Like you know the version

of of rich girl that he he and John just performed

on the voice is not the same version as What

was recorded in? 1977 it's the same song because

it's a live performance. It's so different and

I don't think Stan really needs to evolve that

much because of where he is What he's done. I

mean, you know if he's if he's I mean, I don't

know and I don't presume to speak for him, right

But if he's happy with where he is, you know,

that's fine. That's perfectly fine That's that's

all you need to do but I I gear I would almost

guarantee you and like I said I don't presume

to speak for him, but I would almost guarantee

you that he would be thrilled if he was Being

played on the airways today. Yeah I mean, that's

just the nature of it. I mean, every artist wants

to be out there. You know, but the problem, you

know, ah, oh, the garbage truck just came by

and woke up Luna. You know, it's just the nature

of, you know, a performer. They want that, you

know, recognition. That's fine. I mean, that's

just the way it goes. But when it comes, and

I don't want, I don't want to dwell on this,

but you know, I know you're a big Stan Bush fan,

so. arguing with you about this is like talking

to a wall tell somebody that the sky's not blue

um but it's it's currently it's not blue it's

gray well it depends on the color spectrum but

blah blah blah blah anyhow um the i mean what

what i'm basically saying is that an artist who

does not change with the times will get stuck

in that time and will no longer be relevant anymore

And people that, you know, start listening to

the music now, I guarantee you, anybody who watches

the new transfer, I mean, I get people asking

me all the time, I use Stan Bush's, you know,

bless his heart, he's given me permission to

do it, and I absolutely love it, and it's wonderful

that he did. You know, he's given me permission

to use Till All Are One. It's hilarious, people

are like, you know, and I watch this, people

constantly ask me, what is that awesome intro,

you know, what's it from? You know, and so many

people, I don't even have to answer, so many

people to be like, It's from the end credits

of War for Cybertron. I'm like, yes, you're right,

but do you realize that that's not where it came

from? It came out before that, but it's all because

of that that people know where it's from. That's

the only reason why people know what that song

is. That's still getting him recognition. Oh,

absolutely. It absolutely is. And that's why

whenever anybody asks me who it is, and that's

why when I emailed him the other day, I said,

you know what? A lot of people ask me where that

song is, and I'm thrilled to tell them the title

and who made the song, because hopefully it's

going to bring more people to listen to you,

because when it comes to Transformers, people

sit there and talk that, yeah, obviously Peter

Cullen is the voice. But when it comes to the

soundtrack of Transformers, Stan Bush is in there.

That's just the way it is. I understand that

it doesn't work for kids nowadays. That's just

the way it is. But there are some people that

are going to like it and some people that are

going to appreciate it. So I want people to understand

it. My point that I'm basically trying to say

is that people get stuck in that. And just look

at the revivalist movement we have here. Almost

every single thing at this point is, hey, what

can we... bring into today's society that was

from the eighties whether it's music whether

it's let me just look at that aspect of of hollywood

i mean that's that's all that they do nowadays

because it just goes to show you how much of

staying power the eighties had um it's true it's

as far as being labeled as a one hit wonder there

are some artisan bands that are labeled that

and that's not really what they are like um I

have no idea why Faith No More's epic is labeled

as a one -hit wonder. Maybe it's because that

was the only one that charted. I don't know.

But I listened to another podcast called Drop

D over at earth -2 .net. And they are currently

going through every single Faith No More album,

reviewing every single song. Each episode is

dedicated to one album from that band. And they

do that with You know, they select an artist

after they finish the previous one they talked

about as far as catalog goes. I am one of the

ignorant people that thought Faith No More was

a one hit wonder because of Epic. And they have

plenty of other songs. They have plenty of other

hits that have come out. You know, Jimi Hendrix

for a while. Simply because of how popular he

was was labeled as a one -hit wonder, you know,

so the label of one -hit wonder Doesn't I mean

essentially the bare bones of the definition

is if you only have a You know one hit single

that reached number one or higher ranks or got

popular but I mean the label of it is just like

Oh, they're just gonna be a one -hit wonder,

you know, whatever You know, I mean people just

kind of throw it around like it's willy -nilly

and all that stuff And that's just not true with

some people or with some artists in some bands

I think I think you know a lot of it has to do

with the fact that you know the commercial success

Yeah of something you look at, you know what

one song that I'm a huge fan of Is but it's the

only song that I like so in you know for me it

could be considered in my personal opinion It

could be a one -hit wonder because I don't listen

to anything else from this group but they are

very well known and that's the Grateful Dead

and The only song that I know of and it's the

only song that they ever produced That actually

got into the top ten and that was touch of gray

now. I know that song. I love that song But I

don't know anything else from them, but they

have a huge kind of following that I'm not aware

of Right now For like, you know, so a lot of

people may consider that song a one -hit wonder

but the band itself is is very well known now

I Think a lot of it has to do with some of the

the commercial success. Like I said, I mean what

if a song is a huge commercial success And they

don't ever top that then they're done. Yeah,

you know, it's it's you know yesterday's news

get on with it, you know, but What were you gonna

say? No, I was just saying yeah, I mean that's

that's so true, you know, so it's it's it's it's

so hard to kind I mean, there's so many different

kind of um, I Guess like definitions that you

can apply to it Right, you know, I mean twisted

sister. I don't really consider them a one -hit

wonder I Mean there's there's a couple songs

that they came out with that I like but now You

know, obviously we're not gonna take it is probably

gonna is probably the most popular Right, but

you know that you know you go down and you know

here I'm looking at another one vanilla ice vanilla

ice had a couple hits Well, between Ice Ice Baby

and Ninja Rap, that's about it. And then he went

on to this movie. I mean, he did his own damn

movie. Now, Brandon, it wasn't a successful movie

or anything. But, I mean, there are people that

I think it depends on who... You know you talk

to some people it may be you know now you can

get some songs that you never heard of before

my sister And I joke the fact that she's a lesbian

she listens to these to these two girls named

Teagan Teagan and Sarah I Never heard a damn

song from them in my entire life, but they're

huge in the gay and lesbian community Like they're

they're like they're like the Beatles of the

gay and lesbian community I mean, that's probably

a little bit too extreme. You know, it just depends

on really what circle you go through. I mean,

you know, you look at like, for example, Billy

Ray Cyrus, he was a one hit wonder. And I'm sure,

you know, I mean, I have friends back in Michigan

that were big country fans who still to this

day love Billy Ray Cyrus. And I think what's...

I think with him specifically, yes, Achey Breaky

was really the thing that people latched on to

the most, but with Disney Channel doing the Hannah

Montana show, he did get a few, granted they

probably weren't hits for him, I don't know,

I'm not looking at the... the man's discography,

but he did get a few times to shine within the

Hannah Montana smoke. Yeah, but I'm not even

talking about the resurgence of him because of

Hannah Montana. I'm talking before this. Oh yeah.

I mean, fans of him, you know, are, you know,

very, very, you know, I mean, you watch any of

these people, you know, and it's, they'll have

their following. and there's some songs that

you know yeah this was their biggest hit but

they're not a one hit wonder you know this song

blah blah blah is also a real good song well

okay but i never heard it right yeah i mean it's

it's i think uh it depends on the person but

i mean you just you just go with it i guess it's

just it's it's a matter of personal opinion i

think and uh That's that's I mean, I look at

you know men without hats and there's a couple

songs of theirs that I really like You know,

but I'm also old yes, you are and on that note

we're gonna take a quick break You're gonna hear

some of these one -hit wonders in a musical cliptastic

countdown or whatever I'm gonna put in here and

We'll be back with more topics after this These

One Hit Wonder bands fail to live up to the success

of their One Hit Wonder. It's not even only filling

up to live up to the success with whatever people

release after their hit takes off, but take The

Mickey Girl, Tony Tony, or Tony Basil, or whatever

her name is. Yeah, it's Tony Basil. I don't even

know, because like I said, I'm not really looking

at any information for this. I don't even know

if she even attempted to make a follow -up album.

I think she just faded away from, you know, it's

kind of like, you know, hit hard and fade away

without a trace. I mean, that's, you know, essentially

what it is. But like I was saying earlier about,

you know, Macarena and Los Del Rio, it's like,

sure, they might have put out a sophomore album,

but no one probably has ever heard anything off

of it because of how popular Macarena was. I

mean... Essentially, before Nickelback released

their 2005 album, All the Right Reasons, you

could almost call them a one -hit wonder band,

even though they had multiple hits. But once

How You Remind Me came out, no one remembered

anything off of the state, unless you were a

huge Nickelback fan. So it just surprises me

how some of these people just, here's my mark

on the world. I'm gonna go away now. Right. But,

you know, it's, it's, it's, you know, I mean,

and some, some blank bands, I think, unfairly

get labeled it. Like, for example, the band Blind

Melon, who had a huge success in... With no rain.

With no rain. And people consider them on one

hit. Wonder, well, two years after that song,

the lead singer committed suicide. Committed

suicide. Yeah, you know, I mean, so... I don't

think that's fair to consider them a one -hit

wonder. The dude killed himself. Well, right,

but in that case, it's... They could have been

around for longer. I mean, technically speaking,

yes, because that was their only really big hit

and nothing else came out of it, but there are

extenuating circumstances as to why nothing else

came out. That's like saying Nirvana should be...

You know, I mean, it had, had, you know, uh,

the, the, oh my... Cobain. Yeah. You know, you

know, let's say Kurt Cobain killed himself after

Teen Spirit. Would they have been, you know,

just a one -hit wonder? Mm -hmm. You know, I

mean, it's, it's weird how it gets, you know,

put like that, but so many times, yeah, I'm,

I'm curious how many of these people actually

try to replicate their success and, you know,

just fail. I mean... Who really knows I mean

you have quiet riot with come on feel the noise

yeah a song that you know Whenever I listen to

my workout music it that's one of the songs that

comes on and Did they ever try to come out with

something probably at the time were other? You

know bands probably more popular than them, and

they're like oh, we don't want to listen to them

You know it's the same kind of thing as everything

else Who knows? Yeah, but there's there's so

many different Things that can come and go with

it that makes you really kind of wonder what?

Is some of the criteria True, it's it's you know

Who makes that up and you know for the most part

I'll bet you it's record labels. Well. Yeah You

know I mean you get people that sit there and

Sit there behind desks and create You know, this

was later on, you know, not so much with One

Hit Wonders. Well, no, you can even argue that,

that, you know, they try to replicate the success

of things like, say, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.

You know, you get like S -Club 7, who had, like,

one hit. I can't even think of the name of it,

but for some reason I remember the group S -Club

7. But, you know, they try to replicate the same

kind of success as one group, and in doing so

you... manufacture a one -hit wonder You know

not anything because you know rock me Amadeus

by Felco They try you know you they try making

you know other albums and things of that nature

And they are they did one that I can't even say

the name of it Because it's like in German or

something, but I mean it was probably like dirt

call me star or something I don't know yeah,

but you know I mean I mean people try to genuinely

try to recreate their success But, you know,

when they're mass -produced, such as, like, an

S -Club 7 situation, where they're trying just

to get the whole boy band and the group thing

going, and you have one hit, and then nobody

else cares about them because they're worried

about what another group does, you, you know,

essentially create a one -hit wonder, and now

they're over and done with, and now you can't

ever have any kind of success because you're

labeled... as a boy band. I mean, look at, look

at, I mean, with the exception of the Justin

Timberlake, who else has been able to come out

and have a solo career? Well, I mean, they've

tried, like Joey Fatone tried. Tried and they

fail. You know. Because, I mean, at least in

my opinion, they try and they fail because they

are now typecast. Yeah. As being that. And, you

know, they'll come out with a hit, you know,

and people think, you know, studios will be like,

yeah, let's give Joey Fatone a chance. I mean,

people are going to remember him. They don't

remember him. They don't care. Was it Bring It

All Back by S -Club? I don't think that's it.

That doesn't sound right. Let me look it up.

S -Club 7. Oh, never had a dream come true. Okay,

that's you know, it's a very pretty song it's

you know, very nice but You know nothing you're

never gonna get anything from this crap You know,

you're gonna I mean and they're speaking to one

-hit wonders. There you go s club seven one -hit

wonder You know that like I said is manufactured

that that that's a completely manufactured one

that You know didn't necessarily have to be but

Red labels tried to replicate the success of

the group, you know, cuz that at the time it

was all about groups Yeah. Oh, yeah late, you

know I don't say I would say from 89 to 2001

it was all about groups at the time groups were

were huge new kids kind of started it and I mean

essentially if I mean new kids aren't New kids

in the block is not even go. I'd even go further

back than that, dude You you got to go all the

way back to like the Jackson five. Well, yeah,

but I mean like in like Comparing to s club.

Yeah, I'm saying gotcha from 89 to 2001 because

they fall from 99 to 2000, you know, that's where

they came in that's where backstreet that's where

in sync came in, that's where 98 Degrees came

in and all that stuff. Granted, in sync 98 Degrees

and Backstreet Boys are not one hit wonder bands,

they're not. I mean, they've had multiple successes

and they've had multiple things, but it's just

one of those things where we've kind of gotten

off onto a group discussion of groups that are,

you know, yeah. I mean, those groups and those,

you know, kind of successive, they have bred

a lot of one hit wonder groups. Oh, yeah. Most

definitely. That's where I was kind of going

with it. I mean, S -Club, that was just the one

that I could kind of think of. I mean, I'm sure

there are probably many more out there. But it's

a product. I saw them in 2000 with Brian McKnight.

Oh, god. Look at the group from Las Vegas, the

girl group from Las Vegas, 702. They had that

song, Where My Girls At. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,

yeah. You know, I'm sure they tried to come up

with something past that song, but that's really

the only song I ever knew from them. Yeah. Like

I said, product of the time. You have Quiet Riot,

who very well could have been a product. Because

at the time, Big Hair, that was what was in style

in terms of music. And you even look at Twisted

Sister. Same kind of thing. These were all products

of the time. You know, I mean, I'm not necessarily

saying that, you know, I mean, that's what these

artists wanted to do. They probably didn't want

to do that kind of stuff. I mean, you look at

Twisted Sister now, and they don't look like

a bunch of drag queens, you know? I mean, so

clearly it's not something that they were really

all that into. Yeah. Now, are there any, like...

In your playlist rotation or anything, when you

listen to your music on your iPhone or your iTunes

or whatever else, are there many one -hit wonders

in your playlist songs as far as like, I don't

know, do you listen to a lot of one -hit wonders?

You know, let me, I actually have my iTunes pulled

up. I have, I mean, starting at the top, I have

Take On Me by A -Ha. There's a huge one. You

know, that's the very first one alphabetically,

obviously. You know, and here's kind of one.

Andy Gibbs from the Bee Gees. I have, I Just

Wanna Be Your Everything. That's a song that

I have in here. Which, you know, that could be

kind of classified as a one -hit wonder because

Andy Gibbs didn't have a very great solo career.

Right. You know, Bee Gees, you know, had a lot

of success. Right. But, I mean, individually

they didn't. uh... big and rich save a horse

ride a cowboy you know i mean that's in my that's

in mind you know berlin take my breath away you

know i mean i have tons dude i mean you gotta

remember it's like i mean it's it's is not necessarily

you know when i grew up i mean because like we've

talked about already you know these songs have

been around for a very long year one hit wonders

have been around for a very very long time right

uh... You know, I mean, it just depends on what

time of, you know, development you come into

the world. You know, gonna make you sweat. You

know, C &C Music Factory. You know, I mean, there's

one. Let's see, what else? Good ol' right said

Fred. I don't have that. You don't? Really? I

don't. Corey Hart, Sunglasses at Night. Glasses

at Night, yep. You know, I mean, there's one

for ya. Let's see what else I? Think he well

I yeah, I guess you could consider that I do

remember another song of his though never surrender

Yeah, yeah, so there is that too um um I mean

who's Johnny? You know elder bars. You know I

mean they've had like two songs in their history

I mean, so I mean yeah, absolutely absolutely.

I have a lot of one -hit wonders that you know,

rotate through here, you know, the final countdown

by Europe, uh, Rock Me Amadeus, Felco, um, you

know, even going into the, I don't even know

that this is the 90s, I don't even know what

year the hell this came out, um, Filter, Hey

Man, Nice Shot, it's kind of like... Hey Man,

Nice Shot, yeah, that was 90s. You know, I mean,

these are songs, you know, find young cannibals.

I mean, we have, I have, you know, One Hit Wonders,

Up The Wazoo. through my playlist. So I would

say for me stuff like Ben Folds 5 with Brick.

Oh, God, what else? I actually have a really

good version of the Ben Folds 5 lead singer singing

Tiny Dancer by Elton John. It's a really good

cover. Um, stuff like that. Oh, God, what else?

I can't even think off the top of my head. I

know I listen to a lot of them, though. Oh, yeah.

And not like I said, I mean, it's just - Oh,

I know one that I listen to all the time, and

you're going to laugh, and the entire podcasting

audience is going to laugh. But I didn't know

who sang it at the time, but there's a song called

All I Need. All I need is a miracle. No? No,

not that one. That's close. All right, I don't

know. Uh, not that. That's pretty good, though.

Because that's a one -hit wonder, I think. Oh,

I'm sure it is, yes. The one I'm talking about

is sung by a guy who starred. Oh, wait, no. Why

was I typing in? There we go. Here we go. Here

it is. Right here. Playing it? What are you doing?

oh crap oh yeah i totally know that song right

that's by that's by like foreigner or something

no that is by jack wagner who got popular as

dr peter burns on melrose place willie yes is

that the gay guy No, I don't know if he's gay.

No, no doctor. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. No Rose place

Wow, there you go. Yeah, I I never knew that

was him I just knew it's kind of like what you

always say, you know, you know if you let me

listen the song I'm sure I'll know the person

but I don't really I don't really know the band

or I don't you know, I don't know this I don't

know that but But yeah, no he You know, he's

an actor. I believe at one point in time, he

was, he either still is or was. He was married

to Christina Wagner, let's see. He began dating

Heather Locklear in 2007, then became engaged

in August of, oh, so yeah, Peter Burns and Amanda.

For Melrose are actually together now now today,

so but I never knew that was him yeah Yeah, and

it's so weird when I saw him on Melrose place

And I know I know fans of this franchise are

going to shoot me for this I Thought anybody

anybody who grew up with it I don't care what

anybody says anybody who grew up in the time

when Melrose place in 90210 was on I don't care

if you were a guy or girl you watch the show

Well, right, but no when I first saw him on Melrose

plays and I first heard his voice yeah I had

not watched a lot of Trek at that point in time

a lot of classic Trek and I thought it was fucking

William Shatner William Shatner that's what I

thought so I thought it was at the time I was

like 16 I was 15 16 when Melrose was on shut

up Gotta pull this up and look at this. I got

I got a look at this guy So I can oh my god.

Oh My god What that's a me it's it's it's amazing

cuz I never seen him before Right. I mean I've

seen him, but I never seen a performing the song,

right? Yeah and Oh wow that picture was live

in 2009 holy crap. Oh you got a picture. Let

me see It's on the it's on the Wikipedia article

looks old. He looks old now Oh 52 he he has not

aged very well for 52. I don't know. He looks

pretty decent when he does those music infomercials

you know how they have those this twenty cd set

will throw in these two additional cds for free

just shipping and that you know that kind of

thing uh... but no he he sung that song and i

think it says i think that's the only song he's

ever made i don't i don't ever remember doing

any other songs well you know and we we talked

about like patrick's lazy you know i mean yes

you know i mean that's that's all You know, I

can't remember the name. Oh, Party All the Time

by, what the fuck is his name? Eddie Murphy.

Oh yeah, Eddie Murphy, yeah. I mean, these are

songs that, you know, I mean, a lot of people

probably don't know. I mean, it's like, unless

you actually saw it, like... So there I'm sure

there's people out there that if they listen

to say, you know My bad or someone wants to party

all the time party all the time You know people

probably know that song that are you know around

her age. He may not necessarily know that Eddie

Murphy sings it Yeah, you know just because You

want you want to put some of those things, you

know that you know two and two together necessary.

One Hit Wonders, you know, not only is it just,

you know, for me, it's not just because it's

a band or an artist is a One Hit Wonder or they

only made one song. It's like you were saying

earlier, you only like one or two songs from

a certain band or artist. But yeah, I'm sure

One Hit Wonders will continue to plague us or,

you know, make us enjoy them in the coming millennias

and whatever else. Do you have any clothing?

I have a lot of clothing, thank you. Do you have

any closing thoughts on One Hit Wonders? I don't

really, but Bender might. You don't have to pay

attention to me. Bender. So that's all we can

say. Was just shut up and pay attention to him?

That's kind of lame, Bender. Lame, lame, lame.

That's all he's got. I mean, like you said, when

it comes to One Hit Wonders, they've been around

since the beginning of time, for the most part.

So I doubt they're going to go away anytime soon.

Right, right. Hopefully they just don't suck.

Yes, exactly. Like that crappy Aqua Barbie girl

song. Oh my god. I'm a Barbie girl. You know

what the bad thing is? According to a few sources

I saw, that song got released in 1987. I did

not find out about it until 1995 with the Power

Rangers movie. That makes sense. Oh my god. Anyway,
