About this Episode

TFG1Mike, Bill Stebbins, Mobile Mike, and Geoff Farinha dive into all things iPhone. They trace their phone histories from early brick Motorolas to Windows Mobile devices, then discuss what they love and hate about the iPhone—from usability and iTunes integration to app sandboxing limitations and missing MMS support. The group explores jailbreaking (with debate over Sling Player access), future iPhone predictions, and their most and least-used apps.

You're listening to Geekcast Radio on geekcastradio

.com This is geek cast radio episode for the

iPhone discussion. My name is TFG one Mike and

I am joined by Jeff Farina Bill Stebbins and

mobile Mike. Hey guys It's going This is a an

episode I've been wanting to do for a while.

This will be an all iPhone discussion So what's

been going on with you guys this week, I guess

bill you can go first if you like Currently on

vacation for my day job. So I've been hanging

out with the family We went to an amusement park

yesterday and worked around the house today getting

ready for the holidays. So we're having a good

time Christmas and July really Yeah Christmas

fourth of July Halloween, they got it all up

there. It's a great part Yeah, I went there like

I don't know probably about ten years ago I'm

sure it's changed a lot since then. It's a lot

better, yeah. Free soda. They've always had free

soda though, haven't they? I don't know. That's

always been their gimmick. So what else is going

on with you? Did you buy anything new this week?

No, I think I've pretty much exhausted my gadget

funds for a little while anyway. I've been looking

at the GS and I just can't bring myself to pull

the trigger. Really? Yeah, until I can sling

over 3G, I just can't get myself to buy one.

I gave up sling for a year when I got the iPhone

going for Windows Mobile and I kind of hate to

give it up again to go to the GS because I'm

not normally around Wi -Fi unless I'm at home

and then I'll just turn on the television. I

don't, so it would be kind of a disappointment

not to be able to use it over 3G. Yeah. So what's

been going on with you, Jeff, this past week?

Not too much, to be honest. You know, did the

simulcast last night. Same old, same old. Just

kind of been hanging out. You know, big weekend

this weekend, as Bill stated. So just kind of

getting prepped for that. Building up the steel

liver. Yeah. Steel liver. Steel liver, as soon

as you turn 21, none of us saw you for like two

and a half weeks. Hey, you know, that's the only

way to do it. It's the only way to do it. What

about you, Mike? What's been going on with you?

Same old, same old, man. Just doing the gadget

gurus and iPhone dock and working. Yeah, you

guys need one feed for all the iPhone shows.

Yeah, well you know what I started doing was

just putting since a iPhone docked We've been

having some trouble with the RSS feed or I'm

sorry the iTunes feed I'm just gonna start lumping

them in with my gadget gurus on my iTunes feed

and then I think Jay is just gonna host the files

so that way they all show up just on one one

big feed Yeah, I mean I think and I've said this

to you before I mean it you know it's up to you

guys It's whatever you want to do, but if you

check out feed burner i think they host the files

as well and i think it's all free cuz that's

what all our shows are through is is feed burner

uh... but i'm not sure i don't know uh... so

i guess we're gonna go ahead and get into the

general topics uh... the first on the list is

the iphone beginnings and what i want us to discuss

in this is how each of us uh... you know like

what was our first cell phone and how many cell

phones that we have until uh... until we got

the ever impressive iPhone. And I guess I'll

let you go first, Bill. Oh, cool. Well, you know,

and I think we probably should mention that you

and I have kind of been through this discussion

once. And yes, we have great lost episode that

will never be heard by anyone. Unfortunately,

we attempted to record a couple of three weeks

ago, you and I. Yeah. And actually, it's. It's

actually funny that Bill and I are actually live

in the same city and we didn't even know it until

Until I mentioned it to him in one of the chat

rooms for the mobile tech moment or the simcast

chats So that's pretty cool Yeah, it is. But

my first cell phone was way back in, I guess,

the early 90s. It was one of those Motorola's.

It looked like a brick. It was really a brick.

And it had the fixed antenna and all that. It

was, I forget how much, a month and then a quarter

a minute. And then it was free after 10 o 'clock.

So everybody I knew got calls at 10 .01. I was

always a big phone junkie and I had a friend

that worked for one of the carriers. I can't

remember who it was way back when but he would

always hook me up with phones and so I moved

on to the StarTac and the StarTac was still probably

the coolest phone I ever had just because it

was so futuristic back then. Then I went to a

couple just basic flip phones. Then I had a Trio

650. I was with Sprint for about 10 years, so

I was kind of stuck with their selection of phones.

So I got the 650, got the taste of email and

data on the go, and I was hooked. And when the

first Windows Mobile 5 phone was released, PPC

6700 I snatched that thing up. I got it. It was

a front one of the first people in town to get

it and Then I decided to ditch that because I

got sick of sprint and anybody that follows me

on Twitter Probably knows that I'm not a fan

of sprint at all. So I ditched sprint and got

on with AT &T with the tilt when it came out

or I'm sorry the 8525 so that was like three

or four years ago and then I upgraded to the

tilt and I've had I don't know how many phones

in between I've had the 3G version of the dash

the HTCS 630 I have had several trios and different

forms and iterations and then I used to go back

and forth with the guys when I was a huge Windows

Mobile fan. I still am to some extent, but spent

a lot of time at XDA developers and flashing

custom ROMs and really enjoyed all that. It's

very geeky. But at some point I got tired of

having to reload everything every couple of days.

Even once I had a system down, it still took

a couple of hours each time. I was watching when

the iPhone 3g came out I wasn't interested in

the original iPhone because there weren't really

any Cool things you could do with it out of the

box and the lack of 3g really turned me off but

when the when the 3g was Getting ready to come

out I was driving to Florida on a family trip

and my wife was reading the blogs to me as we're

driving down because I'm thinking if they release

this thing now We're gonna pull over somewhere

and I'm gonna go get one If you can imagine,

you know band full of kids and me driving and

my wife, okay now I engage it as saying Yeah,

and they, you know, that was last year. So they

didn't release it for, I think, like a month

after. And I waited until there was a jailbreak.

And then one night I went and picked one up and

we were supposed to. Well, they were recording

the Mobile Mobility Today podcast that night.

And so I got home at, I don't know, right as

they were recording. And Jay Doss was was going.

We always sparred back and forth when those mobile

iPhone. Said something about my my new iPhone

and he's like what? Well check my Twitter feed

and see where I posted from he's like, oh my

gosh, is that from a friend's phone? You know

when the moment that I picked that thing up and

started using it I thought oh my gosh, there

is no way I can go back to that Windows mobile

phone It was one of those oh wow now. I see what

people are talking about kind of experiences.

Oh, yeah And so, you know and I've had that phone

I got it in August and I've had last August and

I've had it ever since And I've picked up some

other phones. I still have my tilt but pretty

much you know the iPhone is the closest I can

come to to being able to to be independent if

I go on the road for work or anything without

having to to take the laptop everywhere I go.

Yeah. It's still missing a little bit of functionality,

but it's really close. Yeah. What about you?

Do you have anything else to say about it, Phil?

No, I was going to say, sorry for my long diatribe.

No, no, it's all right. That's all right. It's

no big deal. That is my journey to where I am

today. Hopefully I can still stay with Windows

on my desktop. I have a Mac 2 now. Michael Banda

keeps trying to convert me completely, but I'm

not all the way Soul Jet. Yeah, we here at the

Geekcast Radio Network are not opposed to two,

three, four hour episodes. On my very first podcast

that I started, the Transformers Generation 1

podcast, my episode about the Transformers 1986

movie ran three hours and 58 minutes long. so

how that is dirty yeah exactly uh... uh... so

why don't we go next to uh... jeff uh... okay

what what what did you start in your in in your

cell phone history well my mind isn't as a as

thorough as yours or at least as long as yours

for all you guys i'm i am kind of the uh... young

in of the group even though you know well i know

i'm close to mike for his age uh... i'd say I

didn't get my first phone until I was 16 because,

mind you, this was, at least in this area, you

didn't get a phone until you were, you know,

until you had a car because then it was an issue.

If you broke down, you'd have a cell phone and

so on and so forth. So I got a Samsung flip phone.

I can't remember the model. For some reason I

just blanked out on it. It was with Verizon Wireless.

I had that phone for a year. Then I got the Motorola

Razr, the V3. That was back when everyone had

to have it. Hell on the razor for actually about

a year and a half two years believe it or not

from there I got the envy to I'm sorry the envy

with Verizon And around that same time. I actually

started working with cell phones Making a little

bit more money, so I actually got myself a plan

with sprint Which allowed me to get a Motorola

q9c at the same time as having the Verizon phone?

After using the Q9C for about a month or two,

it was kind of frustrating to use that phone

to be honest. I went to the HTC mogul, the Sprint

mogul, which was the slide out phone with the

PDA. Nice phone, I held on to that one for a

little bit. From there I kind of downgraded to

the Palm Centro. Just because I wanted a phone

that was, you know, Windows Mobile was kind of

getting tiring for me. I needed a phone, being

in college, being on the go all the time. I needed

a phone that was dependable. It wasn't going

to break down and freeze and have the battery

pulled out, you know, every half an hour, so

on and so forth. So, went to the Centro, loved

that phone, held on to it for probably, I don't

know, three months or so, until it started giving

me all kinds of problems. Conveniently, right

when all these problems started happening, the

instinct came out. So I swapped out the Centro

and got the Samsung Instinct, which was good

for about the two weeks. This phone was out until

the iPhone came out, the iPhone 3G that is. I

had to have the 3G. I got the 3G the day after

it came out. I walked into my Apple Store and

they had it. I was very, very, very lucky. Signed

up for a 3G and I had a Sprint phone, my iPhone

3G, and my Verizon phone all at the same time.

Canceled the Sprint and took the Verizon number

to AT &T. So now I only have one phone and I've

had the 3G for a year. Now I have a 3GS, which

I got, I want to say the fourth day. It was the,

I'm sorry, it was the Tuesday after it came out,

so the fifth day, fourth, whatever it may be.

You know, I can honestly say, guys, I skipped

out on the first iPhone simply because at that

point in time, I wasn't on my own yet. I was

still on my parents' plan. You know, being in

college, it was tough for me to afford it. And

there's just the price of the phone. The $600

for the phone was just kind of crazy to me. I

really wasn't into the whole unlocked area of

phones yet, so I didn't really know about the

whole high -cost market that there was out there.

But now that I've had the iPhone, I can't see

myself going to anything else. I mean, I can

see myself possibly reviewing phones. I would

love to do that. But I think my full -time device

is always going to be the iPhone. It's just so

dependable. It works for me. Yeah. Yeah, I completely

agree. And we'll get to that a little bit later.

And now we come to the long segment, the one

whose nickname is Mobile Mike. You have had,

what, maybe 250 phones in the last six months,

correct? No, not that many. I actually sat down

and me and my fiance went over how many phones

I've had just in the amount of time I've been

with her, which is about five years. And it it

was like in the 50s or something. Basically divided

it by months It came out to like 1 .3 phones

every month so I'm definitely not gonna go into

my list of phones that I've had but He definitely

lives up to his nickname, doesn't he? Yeah, so

I've been are all around I started off You know

with Windows mobile just because it's the most

versatile I've moved I've used symbiont phones.

I've used Blackberries before I mean you name

it. I've used it. I've used every operating system

and I've never really Settled completely and

been satisfied with you know one particular operating

system Really until the iPhone and not to say

that I don't get other phones. I still my iPhone

is always the main phone But I still always am

out getting different phones just because I have

a sick, sick habit. So without going too much

into detail, I've tried about everything. But

the iPhone is my main device for the most part.

Yeah. I kind of agree with that. I think for

me, I started I think when I was 19 on cell phones.

I first had the Nokia 918. And this was a. it

was a Basically, I don't know if anybody remembers

the Nokia 5120 the one that you could always

change out the case you get out different color

cases for it and whatever else this was basically

a cheaper version of that And when I started

out, you know cell phone plans, you know, the

prepay pants plans are like like 50 cents a minute

So it was basically you only use your cell phone

you're dying or something you know some strange

emergency comes up and then I went to the Nokia

5120 the 5190 I believe it was the Crap I think

it was the 3595 or or something from Nokia pretty

much I was a Nokia guy that's the only cell phone

I wanted was was Nokia's I wasn't really into

flip phones until I actually saw the Samsung

sink uh... which was the singular sink when a

tnt was singular uh... so i got that and i like

that it was my first flip phone i'd you know

i like it a lot and then then of course the iphone

my my main issue with the samsung sink for me

to get music on the thing because all my music

is in itunes i had to burn the music to a cd

re -rip it into windows media player and then

sink it to the phone in sinking to the phone

to the sink it took about two and a half hours

and then it would never put the artist name of

the song title in the correct place like say

you're say you're going to put up say you're

going to play a song say you're going to play

acdc's back in black it would say acdc and then

another song title from another artist and it

wouldn't even put the album name on there even

though i entered all all the information in manually

So yeah, exactly it sucked it just sucked and

I Heard about the iPhone. I'm like, oh cool the

only reason why I originally got the the original

2g1 was I wanted everything all in one and that's

basically what iPhone is it's everything all

in one you have your music your pictures Your

applications were just starting to become big

and obviously they're huge now. You have basically

a full web internet browser on here. I don't

really use that. Some of the firmware applications

like the stocks and sometimes even the maps,

I don't use that crap all that often. So I kind

of wish that Apple would have made some of those

optional, but whatever. So that's where I came

from on that. I think we're going to go into

our first break really quick because that was

pretty much the first... Actually, no, I think

we can go to the next topic, which is the most

favorite or least favorite things about the iPhone.

I'll start with you this time, Jeff. You can

start wherever you want. Most favorite or least

favorite. Let's do Lee's favorite first. Cool.

Why not? I'm going to say only, you know, as

these guys and as you guys, I should say, come

up with more things. I'm sure like, oh yeah,

I missed that. I missed that. But the two that

come right to my mind right off the bat, one

of them isn't actually the iPhone's fault. It's

AT &T's fault. MMS, obviously, we all know that.

But the other one is actually Apple and the iPhone's

fault. And that's flash video in Safari. I really

wish we had flash just so I could do everything

with this phone. I wouldn't have to worry about

having a laptop, I could truly do everything.

Except Hulu. Well, maybe NBC or Universal or

somebody will come out with a Hulu app. You never

know. We're hoping, but right now they're blocking

everybody else and that sucks. No PS3, no Skyfire.

I guess that just goes to show you what idiots

NBC and Universal are. Very true. And what's

your most favorite, Jeff? That's a good question.

I'm not sure. It's tough to nail it down to one

thing. Why don't you come back to me? I'll think

about that. OK. What about you, Mike? What's

your least and most favorite aspects of the iPhone?

I'd have to say my favorite is just its usability

you know I mean it's it's one of the only phones

that you can pick up and Just know not know how

to use, but it's just really easy to use The

I hate it and love it at the same time the one

app at a time You know because it's stable it

works really well I mean you have your freezes

and your crashes just like anything else, but

they're you know few and far between And just

the overall feel of the phone is very user friendly.

My least favorite thing, well, let's see. I've

got like a kind of like a list of not so favorite

things. The thing that bugs me the most is the.

the way that Apple controls the app store and

what apps can do and how they're sandboxed. We've

seen with jail broke apps or jail break, I can

never say that right. We've seen with the unofficial

third party apps, some really, really neat stuff.

There's an app I have on mine called A Twitter

where you just drag from the top bar down and

you can post a tweet from anywhere. Obviously

has to run in the background. It has to use resources

and API's that Apple doesn't necessarily allow

and It's it's just stupid. It's like why you

know that we could seriously have some not just

apps that you open up and boom They're there

and then when you're done, they go away, you

know, we could have some really tightly integrated

apps One thing is the lock screen. I mean that

there's so much empty space there that could

be filled with calendar, entries, tasks. They

definitely need to release an API to where people

can start developing for the lock screen because

it's just ridiculous that you have to open, turn

on your phone, unlock your phone, click calendar,

scroll, and find your appointments for that particular

day when it's supposed to be a productivity device.

Those are my main gripes is the sandbox and the

apps and stuff not being able to run in the background.

What are a couple of your favorite things about

it? Well, like I said, I mean the main usability

of it. No, no Well as an iPhone, but you know,

just like you said the iTunes stuff, you know,

I'm a Mac user and iTunes user Yeah, I use Windows

media player before when I had the Windows computers

and you know I just dragged and dropped stuff

over for my phones that that had music capabilities

and Really didn't realize what a pain in the

ass that was till I got the iPhone and I can

just sync everything audio books podcasts It

works flawlessly with iTunes. So that's That's

definitely up there. And what about you, Bill?

What's your most or least favorite things about

the iPhone? My most favorite thing about the

iPhone is probably just the fact that I've got

pretty much everything that I need. And if I

need to do anything with my phone, it isn't a

huge ordeal. You stole mine. Well, you've got

time to think of another one. No, but in a way,

one of the things that I've fought with not wanting

to get the iPhone is that it's kind of dumbed

down. In a way, there are not all these secret

tweaks and options and stuff like that. But in

a way, that's a good thing now because I'm pretty

busy. A lot of people are and I don't have time

to do that stuff and when I do have time to tweak

on it, I'd rather be doing something else. So

I can get in there and get done when I need to

get done. And I guess one of the best things

about the iPhone is that the Twitter clients

on it rule. I mean, you look at Windows Mobile

and you look at Android, they've got a couple

clients, and they're really just full of compromise.

They're not really all that great looking. They

don't really work all that smoothly. And the

iPhone, I don't know how many Twitter clients

there are, but I have about five on my phone.

And so, you know, that stuff is great. Things

that I don't like about my iPhone, I mean, Mike

kind of stole my thunder about the App Store.

I hate the App Store approval process. And I

saw another story today on how someone had developed

a karaoke app and Apple denied it because it

duplicated functionality of the iPhone. And then

somebody found that they had put in a patent

application for a karaoke functionality So, you

know that they're really unfair to developers

and that in turn I think hurts some of the creativity

on what goes into the app store Because you know

people spend all this money and time to develop

apps You don't know if you're gonna get it developed

or not, you know, you're gonna get it published

or not Yeah, that's nuts Yeah, the other thing

that I really don't like about the the iPhone

is that you know Apple pretty much controls everything

with it you know down to you can't even change

out the flipping battery and normally that's

not a problem for me because I've got my phone

plus I've got a You know a battery pack backup

whatever the milli power pack so that works out

pretty well But I still think at some point they're

gonna have to look at doing a a You know user

replaceable battery, but it seems like Apple's

going the complete other way with that I Think

they've always been pretty much Tight with their

products though. I mean they haven't really You

know yeah, the iPhone is is very user -friendly

and there's a lot of cool stuff on it But like

you guys all said there is certain things that

you wish that Apple would kind of be a little

bit more leaning about But that's what makes

them Apple. I mean if they didn't do that stuff.

They wouldn't be who they are Which you know

look like you guys said it sucks, but I think

that's what that's what they're they're all about

They're all about sucking? Yeah. Well, not necessarily,

but I mean as far as having total control over

stuff that they market and they put out and whatever

else. For me, the worst thing for me is actually

the syncing. I have had over the 2G and now that

I have the 3G. i have had more problems sinking

to my computer and it's not even the actual sinking

process it's the actual connecting process earlier

today i spent forty five minutes uh... plugging

and unplugging it into the computer and switching

ports and and and everything else and it just

would not recognize the phone so i said for i

just said fuck it left it in there and opened

itunes and eventually it recognized it and it

was fine i've gone to the apple store i think

three times about this same issue and they're

like oh well just do a just do a restore and

then don't don't start from from your backup

just start brand -new and blah blah blah blah

and it's like but every time that after I have

the issue I come home and it works again and

it you know what the hell I just don't get that

I think my favorite thing what like you guys

said you know some apps Twitter if it is awesome.

It's the best Twitter app out there. I don't

care when anybody else says it's the best one

It's the only one I will have on my phone unless

Something like the twitpocalypse happens again,

and it crashes for Christ's sake that was horrible

had to deal with Tweety for about three weeks

Tweety makes Tweety makes like Almost every other

Twitter app on every other platform looked like

complete crap. It's like, oh damn, I had to deal

with pretty much the best, but not quite. For

me, Twitter ever gets so much easier to use.

And that's just me. You're jumping in a little

late there, Jeff. Razor blades to my ears. Yeah,

just like our little pocket god conversation.

We'll go on to that later. Twitter if it can

pocket God going to the same landfill as the

old NES ET game Oh the NES ET game I can agree

with but not the other two So yeah, I mean I

think the other best thing for me is the iPod

and now with the 3 .0, being able to actually

download audio books and movies and TV shows

directly to the phone, that's just awesome, even

though I don't buy them that much. Just the ability

to have it if I wanted to, I think that's really

super cool. So we're going to take a quick break

and we will come back and we're going to be discussing

iPhone versus everything else. This is Stan Bush

and you're listening to All Things Transformers

with TFG1 Mike and Steve Megatron. Tune in every

two weeks for all your Transformers needs. We're

back and the next topic on my list is iPhone

versus everything else. Basically, there is an

iPhone killer. When iPhone first came out, everybody

was like, oh my god, what's going to be the next

cell phone to kill it? And while I do like the

one, the only thing about the Palm Pre that I

like is that it has a cordless charger or a remote

-less charger or whatever it is, where you just

set it on. Yeah, yeah. Where you just set it

down and you just leave it. You don't have to

plug anything in. I think that's super cool.

But even the Pre can't keep up with this thing.

I mean. What do you guys think I? Don't have

any first -hand experience on the pre so I tell

you which one I'm super interested in is the

HTC hero mm -hmm me too that that may be the

first Android phone that that really catches

my eye and gets me to buy it I handled the the

magic that HTC Magic up on Rogers when I was

up in Toronto, eh? It's a sexy phone, so the

Hero looks even better. Bigger screen. You know

what's funny about that, Bill? When I was talking

about how I got away from, you know, paying all

the money for phones and stuff like that, but

I wouldn't mind reviewing them, what I actually

visualized in my head was the HTC Magic. Ah,

Hero, I'm sorry. It's a great looking device.

You know, the fact that they have those widgets

out there, they have a Twitter widget, they have

you name it for widgets. Awesome. Yep. Yeah,

I mean, I don't, you know, when iPhone first

came out, I mean, it was, you know, the original,

the 2G. It wasn't at, I understand Apple wanting

to be super secretive about their new devices

and stuff like that or new products. But, you

know, something this popular and something that

people have been waiting for, for God knows how

long, why wouldn't you at least have a display

model at Consumer Electronics Show or E3 or something?

I mean, I know E3 is, you know, video game stuff,

but I mean, you know, CES is all kinds of computer

stuff. And yeah, I know Apple has their own events

which now have been cut down to, what, two a

year? Or now one a year? Whenever they call it.

Yeah, really? Yeah, really? Whenever the hell

they feel like doing one basically But I mean

not be you know I just think that they kind of

screwed up on on the advertising on the first

one when it first came out because It's like

it's like going into a china shop. You can look

but don't touch anything else you know I don't

know I think that That I don't think there will

be an iPhone killer I mean if they keep improving

it and the only reason why I Was going to upgrade

to 3gs, which I didn't unfortunately yet was

the camera was the camera stuff the the video

the The the additional megapixels and stuff like

that As far as some of the 3 .0 updates Spotlight

search I don't even use it. I mean I'm sure it's

good for some people, but you know if I want

to find something in my iPod I just go to the

iPod I mean I do like the fact that they put

the search bar in almost every Firmware application

that they have like YouTube and and iPod and

mail and and all that stuff. That's cool, but

What's the point of spotlight search at all when

you just go into the application and there's

already a search bar there Well, I'd say that

the idea behind universal search is is really

good. It just needs to be integrated more I mean

it works really really well on the pre Even on

the pre there's still things that I wish that

it had but you know like searching for You know

stuff in mail if you like trying to find an old

message that you Archived six months ago, and

you're looking for something. You know you can

find it The other thing that I do is I try out

a lot of apps so I'll get like four or five pages

worth of apps that I don't use and then you just

start typing you know the name of the app and

boom you don't have to sit there and flick through

you know nine pages because the iPhones organizer

or the way it's organized with your icons is

is for some people it might work But when you

come from Windows Mobile and you're used to being

able to stick stuff in folders and have stuff

neatly labeled and whatnot on your home screen,

12 pages of applications is a freaking mess.

So universal search definitely helps narrow down

that kind of thing. But it just needs to be integrated

better and be able to do more stuff. And I'm

sure they will. Yeah. What do you guys think?

Bill or Jeff, whoever wants to go first? Bill,

go for it. Go ahead, Jeff. Co -host war co -host

war Well, you know, I didn't really understand

the how cool the search piece was gonna be until

Until I got my Mac and realized, you know, that

was a carryover from the Mac. Oh So there's a

thing in there you just basically it's the same

type of deal It works really well for me because

You know, I've got a lot like like Mike said

he I've got a lot of apps but to if I'm trying

to find a contact I've got quite a few contacts

sometimes it's easier just to start typing then

to click contacts and then you know It saves

me some key presses. So yeah, I can understand

that understand that What about you Jeff? Yeah,

I agree that yeah, the search function is great,

you know, I Let's see I can go into it right

now and just type anything I want it's gonna

I just I like the fact that it'll also pull up

my email for me I don't have to go into my email

and search from there, you know, it's pretty

cool. Yeah All right. Um, I guess unless we have

any more thoughts on iPhone versus everything

else we can move on to the next topic Which is

jailboat jailbroken versus un -jailbroken now,

I'm the type of person that you know Especially

with iPhone because I want the warranty I want

the you know because I actually have an iPhone

plan and I want the The the Apple care and all

that stuff. I don't get the whole point of jailbreaking

an iPhone So maybe you guys whoever wants to

go first can't can explain that to me because

I just don't get it Other than the fact that

you may not be on a on an iPhone plan Well, I

mean for me. I'm on an iPhone plan, but there

are things that The iPhone is not allowed to

do that I need it to do. The biggest being I

want to be able to watch my sling player over

3G and Apple in their infinite wisdom said, no,

you can't do that. And so some cool hacker said,

oh, yes, you can here. And bam, there it is.

What is sling player? Because I hear you guys

talking about it all the time and I don't know

what it is. Like YouTube or something no there

there is a piece of hardware that sits on my

network at home Mm -hmm, and it's hooked up to

my in this case. It's hooked up to my TiVo Mm

-hmm, and it broadcasts the video out wherever

I am so I can pull up live television on my phone

I can control my TiVo. I can watch television

I can pretty much do whatever I want to do without

sitting in front of the TV. And one of the reasons

that's so handy for me is because downstairs

in my basement I have a projector and there are

times where I want to set something to record

on the TiVo or I want to check something and

I really don't want to go through and fire up

the projector. and then do what I need to do

and turn it right back off, because that's not

really something you want to do with a projector.

So I just pull it up on my phone and bam, I can

do it. Another handy thing is I've got one upstairs.

I can check whenever I want and see what my kids

are watching. So if I'm not at home and they're

with the babysitter or whatever and they're watching

something I don't want them to watch, then I

know exactly what's going on. So it's basically

for parents who want to spy on their kids. Not

to say that that's a bad thing, I'm just saying

that's basically what you use it for. Sure, but

also say I've got to go to a birthday party or

something and there's a NASCAR race on and I

really want to watch it. Well, I go to the birthday

party and I sit in the corner and I watch the

NASCAR race on my phone. It's awesome. Just to

the general audience you can tell that we're

all pretty much tech geeks because We would rather

do stuff on our iPhones that actually interact

with people at a birthday party I would rather

direct message someone on Twitter than actually

sit next to them and talk to them And have on

occasion Now does the now does the jailbroken

versions does it take up more battery life no

Okay. I don't know why there's a myth behind

that. I think there's some that do like IntelliSync

was that one that ran on the home screen and

since it was running in the background the entire

time it really tanked battery. I don't use that.

I mean I tank my battery anyway just because

I use it so much but I mean you know I always

charge it before I go to bed and the next morning

you know it's fine for that day. Yeah, I'd say

nine nine out of the ten gel broken apps aren't

going to have any effect on your battery at all

unless the ones that You know specifically run

in the background or that are you know pulling

down data? Constantly And you know, I should

probably run through kind of what I don't use

that much as far as jailbroken software But the

stuff that I do use is very useful I use something

called status notifier one of my I didn't pick

this as my biggest gripe But one gripe with the

iPhone is like Mike said there's no way to tell

from that lock screen What's going on with your

phone? So like I just got an email if I lock

my phone and then just turn it back on I see

that there's a mail icon, so I know that I have

mail waiting for me. Or if I've got an SMS or

a missed call, it actually shows without me having

to unlock the phone and look for any badges.

So that part is really cool. There's a background

or app that lets you run apps in the background.

So if I'm listening to Last .fm or Pandora and

I want to go to YouTube or Google Maps or something

like that, it'll keep playing in the background.

One of the coolest things that I've found recently,

Psycorder is a video recorder app for the 3G.

There is an app called PixelPipe. And what PixelPipe

is designed to do is to allow the 3GS to upload

videos and photos. You can send them to YouTube

or whatever. And someone actually has a hack

for that that lets you upload videos from SciCorridor

to YouTube on your 3G. So I'm actually able to

take video and then upload it to my YouTube account,

even though I don't have a 3GS. But I bet you

don't have the cool editing features, though.

No that and I believe I believe sidequarter only

records in half the frames per second that the

3gs does I agree, but I could be wrong Yeah,

and for me, it's a compromise I mean I would

rather get half the frames per second on The

video recording and still be able to do some

of the other things you can't yet do on the 3gs

So you you know at some point I'll upgrade to

the 3gs But for now, you know the jailbroken

3g is working fine for me I think by this time

next year, whenever I'm eligible to upgrade at

the lower cost, I think they'll probably have

a new phone by then. So at this point, I might

as well just wait all around for upgrades. Yeah,

I'm not due for another one until April of next

year. So by then, I'll just have to wait. Yeah,

yeah. What about you, Jeff? What are your opinions

on the jailbroken versus un -jailbroken? You

know, I... I've used both obviously I used the

jailbroken I'd say for the longest amount of

time I believe was what back on 2 .2 it was nice

you know I used it for probably about a month

or two but I did notice at least in my opinion

my phone was was uh was responding slower when

it was jailbroken so In the end, I actually did

take it off. I would press text message and it

almost felt like it took an extra 10 seconds

in some cases for me. It may have just been my

phone. No, I think that's a byproduct of the

hack. To the contrary though, once 3 .0 came

out, I felt there was no difference at all. It

was just as snappy, especially when you jail

broke it, at least for me. Now that I have a

3GS though, I'm not risking anything, at least

right now. Yeah, I like I said, I don't want

to lose out on the Apple care stuff So and like

I said, I already have an iPhone plan and I mean

the only background app that I ever really use

is the iPod So I mean for me, I really don't

care. It really doesn't matter either way uh...

i think we're going to move uh... do you guys

have any other topics because i was actually

hard -pressed to think of topics because the

next one i have is actually final thoughts and

predictions before we go into our pics of the

week and most or least use apps uh... so if you

guys have any other discussion that you want

to bring up we feel free to well i mean we could

probably talk a little bit about uh... what we

actually do with our phones i mean i i know we

all are pretty big on twitter so especially jeff

over he has like a you know four thousand followers

or something like that oh no no no no or does

it try to act on content to that i was at fourteen

thousand uh... uh... i actually like to play

games on my iphone uh... just looking at my home

screen i have uh... let's golf Pocket God which

rules Sonic the Hedgehog shut up Jeff I Have

one of the games do I have I have arcade bowling

which is basically ski ball Monopoly one versus

a hundred Tetris. I actually have this new one

called. It's more of a time waster. It's called

paper toss and it's basically I've actually been

meaning to do a review on it for iPhone docked

I just haven't gotten around to it yet, but it's

a Basically, like if you're sitting at your office

and you had nothing to do in your, you know,

tight -cheeked bosses at lunch or something,

and you want to, you know, shoot hoops in your

trash can with a piece of paper, that's basically

what it is. It takes a rolled up piece of paper

and it has a trash can, it has three different

levels to it with varying degrees of difficulty.

And that's all it is, is you just try to shoot

the piece of paper into the trash can. It's just

really, really cool. There's a lot of apps that

I have on here right now. I mean, I only have

three screens full of apps. And there's a lot

of them I don't even use half the time. I use

Facebook. I use MySpace every now and then, eBay,

PayPal, Twitterific. But for the majority of

it, I pretty much use the iPod for the most part.

And of course, I play PocketGod every now and

then when I feel like it or when there's a new

update. Honestly thought between from upgrading

to the 3g or programming to the 2g to the 3g

I honestly thought that the camera quality was

better Maybe it was because my 2g lens was maybe

a dirty or something I don't know but I could

have sworn that the camera quality was clearer

on the 3g than it was on the 2g And I love taking

pictures of this thing. It's just awesome. We

had storms here in Louisville About about a month

ago. There was like two straight nights where

it just rained solid and of course Every time

it rains here half the time afterwards, we get

a green sky. Don't ask me why. No idea. No, it's

not the LSD. That would be purple sky. Yes, yes

So I you know, I'm pulled up my blinds and because

I have like one of these big picture windows

in front of my desk in my living room So I pulled

up my blinds and I took a picture of the courtyard

and it came out crystal clear through the window

So I think the camera quality just on the 3g

itself besides 3gs and having video. I think

it's actually improved Obviously before they

did the 3 .2 or 3 .0 megapixel camera for the

3gs I don't know. What do you guys think? I use

mine primarily for the iPod and web browsing

and Twitter for the most part I Mean well in

my calendar Do I like it for my calendar? Not

really. I really like the way the calendar looks,

like the calendar application and the agenda

view. I hate that it takes nine steps to find

the calendar and get into it. When I compare

it to something like Windows Mobile or even Android

now that has a calendar widget, you can slap

on the front. I do a ton of text messaging, which

I really do like the new landscape keyboard.

Well, I guess it's not new for me and Jeff, because

we're special. But I really, really like the

soft keyboard on the iPhone. I mean, I've used

a lot of different keyboards on a lot of different

phones. And even going up against a hardware

keyboard, that keyboard to me is probably one

of the best, if not the best. I do a lot of typing.

Yeah, I tried the landscape keyboard, and I don't

know, I just, it wasn't, I like the, I like the

portrait better, but that's just me. What about

you, Jeff? What do you most use yours for? Pretty

much, honestly, everything that Mike just said.

I do a lot of texting. Calendar, I'd say not

as much as Mike does, but I do use it. A lot

of browsing. A lot of Twitter. Tweety to be exact,

that's what I use as of right now. And then phone

calls. Tweety does load the fastest, so that's

why I use it. Yeah. Yeah, you're one of those

types of people that has to have it right then

and there, which I am too on most things, but

Twitterific, it only takes maybe two or three

seconds to refresh, so. Hey, well when you're

as popular guys, I am on Twitter and you need

those seconds. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah What about you

bill? I use mine for obviously for Twitter. I

use it a lot for RSS I've got probably, I don't

know, 40 or 50 news feeds that I keep up with.

So I'm reading those all day long and I use a

program called NetNewsWire and that syncs with

NewsGator online. So if I read the news feeds

on my desktop, then that's synced with my phone

so I don't have to read the feeds twice. Really

really like that. Yeah, that's that's very very

cool As I said before obviously I do a lot of

twittering. I check my email every now and then

I use the iPod actually iPod takes up probably

a majority of my battery life between that and

Twitter and of course games I wish they would

put some of the other Sonic the Hedgehog games

on because the first one kind of sucks But well

on iPhone it sucks just because the controls

are really weird So I guess we're going to go

into our predictions our final thoughts for iPhone

I'm hoping that there's going to be more improvements

to the camera I think I actually said to you

Mike a while ago. I wish that the actual calendar

app for iPhone would integrate years and dates

because like say you enter in somebody's birthday

now I haven't done this recently but say you

enter in somebody's birthday every other phone

I've had says okay what day you know what month

day and year were they born and as each upcoming

birthday like say my mom's birthday is November

23rd of this year so she turns whatever age and

then the following year it would tell me what

the next age she's going to turn Well, with the

calendar on iPhone, it doesn't do that. It just

says that, oh, yeah, this is this person's birthday.

And I was hoping that they would do that with

3 .0, but they didn't. So what are your all's

predictions or thoughts on the future of iPhone?

I guess we can go with Bill first. Well, I think

the next one that comes out, I'm looking for

a higher res screen. The features that were.

The speed is probably the thing that would draw

me to it most I'll probably upgrade at some point

but for now, I mean man They're just knocking

it out of the park with all these these firmware

upgrades. Oh, yeah the nicest thing About Apple

is that if there's a problem it gets fixed quickly

Mm -hmm. Yeah, it does very much. So yeah, so

I'm really if and you know, I think ROM upgrades,

firmware updates are kind of the coolest things

that have come about in the last, I don't know,

10 years or so. Because you can make a device,

a whole new different device and add so much

functionality just by changing the software on

it. And so that's just awesome. I love that.

I mean, they already got 3 .1 seeded to developers

and the stuff that they added in 3 .0, the A2DP

was by far one of my favorite things that they

added. I've had a Bluetooth car kit in my car

for, I don't know, a couple of years now and

I couldn't use it with the iPhone, but now when

I get in the car, my phone automatically connects.

I can take phone calls. in my car kit or I can

play audio and use my Bluetooth headset to have

a conversation at the same time. So if I'm watching

my sling box or if I'm playing a podcast like

Mobility Today whenever we start recording again

or iPhone Dock or this podcast even I'm going

to listen to myself afterwards and Be like God

I rambled on Yeah, what what's the deal with

mobility today? I know Dave is still and I don't

know Dave as well as you guys may know him But

I you know, I just hear what what what Steve

Trotto always says he's always down there improving

his basement When's that everything to be done?

It'll be pretty soon. He's in the middle of finishing

his basement He was you couldn't tell when we

were recording but his basement was unfinished.

It was just bare concrete and He I don't know

if I inspired him or if he just decided he was

gonna go ahead and do it, but They're finishing

his basement. He's gonna have an office, you

know, he works from home So yeah, that'll be

great. And you know while that's all done I mean,

I I certainly couldn't podcast and do all that

stuff if I had to do it upstairs because with

kids running around and a wife Oh, yeah dishes

together and stuff. It would be almost impossible.

So he decided to just take a hiatus until until

that was all done and you know he'd been going

for quite a long time. I know it's over a year

that he's been back at it so I think he just

needed a break. Yeah, you know, I don't know.

So what about you guys? Mike, why don't you go

next as far as your predictions or as far as

your thoughts on the future of iPhone? Yeah,

I mean I got a I got a mirror Bill said I mean

with the the firmware updates or OS updates I

mean anything's possible. I mean we complain

about something long enough and we'll eventually

get it fixed I'm hoping we see some some background

processes down the road maybe I mean push notifications

are okay for some apps, but you know like well

like we're talking about on the calendar and

the Lock screen, you know, you got to have stuff

that runs in the background. So I'm hoping once

Apple figures out there Power stuff or whatever

their situation is where they can't figure out

how to get apps to run the background You know

properly that they can do that You know, I don't

I don't know I mean maybe next time around we'll

get a you know, like a 5 megapixel camera definitely

better resolution like bill was saying, you know

screw now we got you know the touch Pro 2 and

the touch diamond 2 coming out with I don't know

What is it 840 by 600 or something like that?

800 by 480 800 by 48. Yeah, I mean just huge

gorgeous displays on those phones and With the

iPhone's glass front. I mean that would just

look really good. So, you know bigger better

more features About you Jeff pretty much what

these guys have already said, you know, it's

just basically a rehash I'm looking yeah Personally,

I'm looking for a better screen resolution like

Bill said. And I have to say - Just need a blood

alcohol reader built in. That would be nice.

Have one of those built in. No. Especially for

the two of you, you drunk bastards. You know,

the only way to do it. I just totally lost my

train of thought. I'm trying to think what else.

What do you call Mike? Sorry, dude. No, I think

he's talking about me. I was talking to him,

yeah. I really want that glowing apple still.

I really do. Now that I saw it, I want it. The

battery being removable isn't too much of an

issue for me. I see where everyone's coming from.

If the battery does go bad on you, you want to

swap it out. That makes perfect sense. But I'd

say just better resolution, better battery life,

because I'm noticing with the 3GS, it's definitely

not better, if at least the same as the 3GI.

In my opinion, it's actually a little worse.

And like I said, the glowing Apple, that's a

must. As far as the camera goes, I saw your video

on the video recording for the 3GS and the test

you did in sunlight. I always have problems with

lighting with the 3G camera, just taking pictures.

Is the 3GS any better with different lighting

or is it the same as far as just taking an actual

picture? You know, I honestly haven't, I still

haven't really experienced with just taking a

picture that much. You know, I can do one right

now. I can tell you right now when you use the

autofocus and it has the white balance, it's

great. It definitely... I'm taking one right

now in my room where I have recessed lighting

and a lot of the time my ceiling is so low that

the recessed lighting throws off a lot of cameras.

I'm taking a test picture right now and I have

to say it looks pretty good. Yeah, it definitely

does look better than the 3G did just because

of the fact that you can autofocus and white

balance, but I'll have to experiment more and

then I can kind of speak to that more once I

do so. I have to say that the camera, Mike, as

you saw during my camera test, it's great. You

know, I stuck the phone out the window and focused

it on the clips and then came back and it was

almost instant. Oh no. Yeah. I wish that they

would have done that with the 3G as far as a

software update though. I don't see why. Okay,

with the 3 .0 software they updated YouTube to

be able to log into your actual YouTube account

and obviously that was for when you get a 3GS

to be able to upload video to YouTube. I don't

understand why they couldn't have done that with

the 3G with the camera app. Why they wouldn't

allow you to have autofocus, I mean just even

the autofocus and the white balance with the

regular 3G because as we've said before, you

know, not everybody has four, five, six hundred

dollars to waste, not really waste, but I mean

spend on a new iPhone every other year. So I

don't understand why they wouldn't have done

that to appease the current customers that have

the 3G. Well, I mean, I don't know if did the

hardware for the camera change I would assume

it would Yeah, I would guess between two and

three megapixel I mean obviously the megapixel

change but I would imagine with the with the

autofocus they would have had to change something

too, but I Don't know. I'm not a I'm not a big

camera phone person myself. I Mean I am just

Just for like pictures, I mean, you know, the

video is cool, but I've never been a YouTube

person. I mean, I'll watch, you know, videos

on YouTube, but I've never been one of those

V -loggers or video reviewers that does that

stuff. I think people that do that are really

cool, and that's great for informational purposes.

But, I mean, just for the camera aspect of actual,

you know, taking a picture, you know, I thought

that would be really, really cool. You guys have

any final thoughts before we go out to break

as far as? This section of the podcast Nothing

we've covered it up. All right, we will be right

back The TFG one podcast has all your 80s goodness

with full coverage of the generation one cartoon

and Beyond this is Mike the Birdman Dodd saying

live free or die hard and listen to this goddamn

podcast We are back and we're gonna go into picks

of the week And I think I'm gonna start and the

one that I picked the most only because this

is probably the only time I'm gonna have Jeff

on the show Because he is so busy. I picked pocket

God because pocket God is the greatest game ever

Is it a game? Yeah, is it really a game though?

Pocket bill bill let me just take take the dollar

pocket God and choke yourself with it It goes

to better use that way every time you play pocket

God God kills a kitten God I Just think it's

so cool because you can pretty much do whatever

you want to these little island inhabitants You

can throw lava on them. You can drown them You

can feed them to sharks and yeah as I said before

the animation does get you know I I do agree

with you Jeff after a while the the animation

does get old But if you're you know sitting in

an airport or if you're you know sitting in a

bus terminal if you're out and about Say you're

at a birthday party. You don't feel like you

know Interacting with anybody and you want a

good time wasting game That's what it is. And

I think it is a game because obviously you play

around with the people Okay, I mean it's more

like a diversion kind of it's not really even

the game because there's really no object I mean

the object, you know, you're it's very repetitive

score. Yeah, but I mean I like it There's actually

a girl I work with she wants to get an app i'd

touch just to play pocket god the meeting she

she grabs my phone and she's like got a big pocket

god well i mean i think it is a game because

they just updated uh... with achievements now

so i think if you take uh... that's for that's

pretty cool well i mean if you take the uh...

i think one of the achievements is on the very

first out there they have a coconut on the tree

you take the coconut and i'm trying to drop it

where there's the most islanders how many times

you can bounce it off their heads and it'll count

up or you can do the um... where's the boulder

thing you can do the boulder and see how many

uh... how many islanders you can bowl off the

island at once There's something inherently wrong

with that game. I know, right? It brings out

the evil in everybody. Exactly. Another achievement

is once you get the hurricane storm going, after

you get it going you can press the lightning

and another achievement is how many islanders

you can shock while they're in the storm. so

yeah pocket god is is one of the best time -wasting

games on the iphone regardless of what jeff says

show yourself with that dollars that dollar to

some charity goes to better use that way single

bombs Oh, did I say that out loud? Yes, you did.

And we don't do that much editing here at Geocast

Radio, so that will be on the show. I don't care

about my whole life. Give me that dollar instead

of buying pocket God. I can give you my PayPal

email address if you want. No, that's all right.

Bill, what's your pick of the week? Pick of the

week. My pick of the week is actually an iPhone

accessory from a seller called our company called

mini suits and They're fairly new I found them

on eBay But I was looking for a case that was

similar to the sedio inno case which I have and

I really like However, the problem with that

case is and maybe it's not a problem for some

people They have a big cutout where the Apple

logo is so it's got a nice case to cover up your

phone and keep it all all protected and there

was a big hole cut out and you know i'm like

i don't want people to see that i've got this

big shiny chrome apple so anyway mini suit has

a case that's fairly similar but it covers the

entire phone on the back it's a slider case and

it was seven bucks shipped so um it's a really

nice case i bought one for my wife um and pink

i got myself one and like this you know it's

almost red like the blackjack two red uh... looks

really really cool uh... so that's my pick of

the week uh... if anybody's interested in finding

one of those you can find it uh... on ebay to

search for seller minisuit cool now is there

is now is that the actual name of the case uh...

it's it's it says myvzoo on the back so i don't

really know what the name of the case is i just

searched for a hard shell Case for the iPhone

3g and that's what came up And I tell you man

for $7 shipped and they come in like three days.

I already have like three of them Yes, you do

bill don't lie Since he brought up a case I know

this is kind of on topic kind of off topic what

how do you guys feel hard shells versus Either

soft cases or leather cases. I know Jeff in your

review of the echo view You said you're not one

for leather cases, but I mean just from hard

shell to soft shell What do you guys prefer?

I'm hard shell all the way. Yeah no case No case

I've always been that way though. I've always

like I mean half the reason I get phones is you

know Well, not not anymore but before when hardware

was so important Aesthetics was huge, you know

getting it smaller getting it this way or you

know doing this or that So You know I've always

just not had a case or like a pouch like a like

a you know What I put my iPhone is little leather

hip pouch when I'm at work because I put it on

my belt But other than that I just I put a screen

protector on the front of those bad boys, and

it just goes in the pocket What's your pick Mike

um God you know what? I really don't I guess

my pick for this week for what I've been doing

new this week is is the jailbreak I haven't had

my iPhone jailbroken in quite some time and I've

got to say I'm really really impressed with the

way the developers have put together the city

and the icy app and I mean they even got where

you know developers can make paid versions and

you can pay them through PayPal and they've turned

something that was kind of rinky -dink and hacker

ish into something that's You don't want to have

an iPhone unless it's jailbroken with some of

these applications. So that's going to be my

pick of the week. Now, is that the Ultra Snow?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the Ultra Snow for the

3G. I don't have a 3GS because I am in the Resistance

Army. The Ultra Snow is really just a hack that

allows you to unlock your phone to use with another

SIM. OK. So it's it's kind of another and really

it's just another app that you're loading. Right,

but that's right. Yeah, you're right. It's quick.

It's quick. Or is it quick phone or ponies that

both are red snow or whatever. There's a bunch

of them. Yeah, ponies tools that I use. That's

just looked at it on my desktop. Yeah, you're

right, Bill. I'm sorry. Thanks. Oh, that's fine.

I just we're educating Mike. We're gonna get

him to jailbreak at some point. No never Ask

me everything like my when this dude talks to

me my answer is Google Everything how do I encode

this? What app do you use for this? It's like

he can't figure out stuff for himself and He

he jailbroke his iPhone before I did mine his

iPhone 3g and so if he can do it trust me You

can do it and it doesn't hurt anything. It's

so easy. It doesn't void your warranty. Nothing.

All you do is restore it I mean, yeah, just restore

it save this just just save it back up and you're

good to go. Yeah Yeah, I don't I don't need it.

I won't use it. That's the thing I mean unless

I can like fully customize the the background

image of the of the home screens I would never

use Well, I know you can, but I mean, I don't

know, I just never use it. All right. Come on,

live a little. No, no. It won't break. All the

cool kids are doing it. And since he usually

has to take a lot of time to think about what

he's going to pick, Jeff is last. Oh, hey, you

know, I've been ready since we started for this.

Yeah, OK. I have, I have. This one was actually

brought to light last night on the Mobile Tech

Moment podcast by David Saccone. This is the

one, it's called Kill Pocket God. I'm just kidding.

Yeah, okay. It's a new website. It's actually

the website address is iphone .acomye .com and

acomye is spelled A -K -A -M -A -I. And basically

what this is, as what David showed me, you can

watch live TV on this website and you can also

watch recorded TV. They basically put up all

kinds of on -demand channels for you to watch.

You know, for example, right now I can watch

Fox Business Live. I press play. It goes right

to the movies. I know there's no video feed.

It goes right to the movie screen and you can

probably hear it. Right now, it's already playing.

Basically, it's iphone .acami .com and that's

AK. AM AI And this is it's one of my new bookmarks

only because you can truly watch TV anywhere

now with this phone So it's basically a one more

time for me. It's a K a M M AI So basically it's

a light version of sling player for free Well,

I'm sorry to sling player, you know, you can

truly go through all your channels Do whatever

you want you know these they only give you a

set amount of channels you can watch I mean this

will get you by if you're bored for example I'm

flying. I'm getting on a two -hour flight on

Monday, which I will have Wi -Fi over because

I'm about to be flying air trans so during the

flight Hey, I can watch Akamai and you know keep

myself busy or I'm in one in the terminal Awesome

cool cool alright. We're gonna move on to our

Excuse me, most and least used applications.

Bill, why don't you go first? All right. Well,

my most used application, you're going to love

this. Twitterific. Yeah. That is just kind of

my... I mean, it's so interesting to me how Twitter

keeps me in touch with people I've never met.

I mean, Jeff and I interact all the time, pretty

much every day. I interact with Michael Manno,

with David Zaccone, Mike Florio, I mean everybody.

It's kind of like having this community right

at your fingertips. Like yesterday, I'm up at

Holiday World and the vet calls and says my dog

had had some surgery and they called and said

she wasn't doing real good. So I go to Twitter

and post that and I've got this little support

group. Everybody's wishing me well and all that

stuff. And that was just so cool to have. I mean,

and I must load Twitter, I think, or TweetDeck

or Tweety, whichever Twitter application I'm

using, I must load it, I don't know, two, three

hundred times a day at least. Yeah. I mean, I'm

not exaggerating. I'm just so OCD about checking.

It's just like if I could get a real time feed

on my desktop or, you know, the home screen,

I probably would do that. Yeah. As it is right

now, I've got. on my desktop right now. I've

got a Twitter app open and I've got my Facebook

feed open. I'm very OCD. The people I'm talking

to right now are not OCD at all, right? No, we're

not. Of course not. Yeah, we are. Bill, if I

scratch a phone, it goes to eBay. my least used

app. I'm kind of looking through here to see

what I don't use because I use a lot of stuff.

I think, you know, one of the funny things for

me is like the stock apps that come with the

iPhone, you know, like Notes, Stocks, Calculator.

I don't use those all that much. They're on the

last page to the right for me. So if I need those,

you know, I'm really stretching to do something.

So that's pretty much everything else that's

on here. I'm kind of one of those people that

tries to keep it clean. So if I've got something

on my iPhone, it's because I actually have a

use for it. Otherwise, I'll just download it

when I need it. Yeah. Oh, yeah. So the so the

general the other general non -important Firmware

apps is your pick then for least yeah those and

if I had to pick another one I have shout cast

on my phone, and I've probably used it twice

and for some reason. I'll leave it on here It's

one of those nice to have in a pinch, but yeah,

not really Needing it very much. Yeah What's

your most used app Jeff? Tweety hands down Tweety

Yeah, we're end up fighting over that thing between

that and pocket God And what's your least used

Pocket God cuz it sucks I wouldn't even think

you're that That keen on it to even have it on

your phone. Oh, no. I'm like I said, I'd rather

choke myself with that dollar I'm going to have

to say WordPress only because I've used it a

few times, but now I haven't been using it only

because Mike Florio, you can probably correct

me if I'm wrong on this. Can you post video with

the WordPress app? Oh, you know what? I don't

know. That's the only reason why I haven't been

using it lately because every one of my posts

with WordPress on iPhone docked and so on have

included videos. You might be able to do an embedded

video since you can upload stuff to YouTube and

then copy the embedded link and then drop it

in there because I know you can copy and paste

in there. Yeah. Hmm, but I don't think it has

I don't I don't have the the s so well It's almost

certain it's got to be the same version for either

the 3d or the s but I don't think I've seen like

a upload video option either of I So that's the

only reason why I really have been using wordpress

lately is because all my articles as of late

have included video Which means I pretty much

have to do it on my desktop computer. Yeah Yeah,

and what's your most use that Mike? I gotta say,

I'm on the Tweety bandwagon. I love Tweety. I

use every Twitter app on every phone, and Tweety

is awesome. The way you can pull back conversations

in layers. If Jeff says something to Bill, and

Bill responds to Jeff, and I catch just the last

comment, and I'm like, what the hell are they

talking about? I can click there and go through

that whole list of conversations, and I can unfollow,

follow. I mean, you name an option. It's it's

there. So I definitely that's the only app other

than the stock apps I leave on my home screen

everything else I have on secondary pages And

what's your least used? least use is probably

the stocks app because I Just they're always

down. Yeah I used to have it up with my mutual

funds on there But now every time I look at it,

I want to kill myself. So I don't use it anymore.

Don't play pocket God then uh... is any of this

time you'll actually follow through uh... myself

uh... i just give my car time yeah i know uh...

and mine obviously is terrific and everything

you just mentioned mike you can do in terrific

which everybody should have terrific I wish I've

got Twitter in big two twice the amount of time.

Oh, blah, blah, blah. It caches everything. As

far as I'm concerned, the best one right now,

honestly, is Twitterlator Pro, which I would

go to. But they're saying the new Tweety update.

Basically, Twitterlator Pro now has you can put

video on your tweets and audio on your tweets.

Apparently, Tweety is going to add that very

soon, too. That's why I'm holding off. It's not

worth the five bucks for me yet. Oh. Well, um,

yeah, I When I first heard about Twitter and

this is probably gonna end up turning into a

Twitter conversation I'm like, oh, okay yet another

social networking thing that I probably won't

use You know, I was probably one of the last

people to jump on the myspace bandwagon I only

have it just to keep up with some of my favorite

bands because it's basically become a artist

website is basically what it's become for artists

and bands to update their fans on crap like that,

you know, new albums or whatever. But, you know,

when I first about to her, I'm like, okay, what

is this? Oh crap. And then Facebook, I joined

that just because my high school reunion is supposed

to be sometime this year. I don't know when.

So I joined that to get in touch with some of

my old high school friends and I barely use that

as it is. So I started getting on Twitter, started

making friends, whatever else, and then when

I got iPhone, I'm like, OK, well, so what kind

of apps do I want to download? So I heard somebody

talking about Twitterific. I got the free version.

There was like an ad every 10 tweets. Okay, no,

so eventually I had at the time it was ten dollars

now It's four dollars, which it sucks for the

rest of us that got it at the ten dollar price

I got the premium version of Twitter effect and

ever since the 2 .0 update I have not looked

back other than that brief three -week period

where it was down Yes, it was I conveniently

timed my my falling into a ditch a bottle of

Jack so I'd have to experience this. Okay, maybe

we're exaggerating on three weeks, but it felt

like it was three weeks, damn it. It was like

a week and a half. It was not that, it was like

four or five days. Yeah, it was like a week and

a half or so. Oh, you're crazy. Yeah, well, you

know. And then, you know, I have to agree with

you guys, other than Jeff, as far as, because

I don't use WordPress on the iPhone, but as far

as the non -general firmware apps like Stoxx

and Maps, I don't go anywhere. Why the hell would

I want to use Maps? I mean, unless I need to

find a restaurant that I don't know where it

is, you know. don't use any of that stuff the

and it's just I like it But it's not something

that that I would use all the time and if I just

need to jot something down real quick I just

prefer using the the notes application that came

with the phone So I guess we're gonna move on

to our closing thoughts. Do you guys have any

final thoughts or any final discussion you want

to bring up? Before we close out the show Yeah,

we've kind of hit everything today, yeah, we've

kind of covered everything and surprisingly even
