About this Episode

Steve and Mike dive into GI Joe Resolute, the dark Adult Swim cartoon that bridges the original series and the 2009 live-action film. They discuss the show's graphic violence, animation style, voice acting choices, and how it compares to the original Sunbow series. The hosts also cover plans for GeekCast Radio's upcoming shows, including ToonCast, M-Wire, and Beast Unleashed.

Geekcast Radio, your home for the Geekcast Radio

Network podcast. I'm your host Steve slash Megatron

and joining me as usual is Mike TFG1 from the

TFG1 podcast and this is our first episode of

the flagship show. I don't know if we've actually

decided how often the flagship show is going

to run. I think it's like monthly at this point

but I'm not really sure. Because everything else

we're gonna be doing is most likely weekly with

the exception of ATTF Yeah, it sounds about right

I think that's right. I don't know Not really

sure so So what's going on with you? Not much

This is of course an early episode for the show

considering we weren't going to start it until

August but yeah it's pretty much going to be

recorded whenever we find an excuse for a show

that doesn't fit into our other podcasts. Yeah,

I've got several episodes in mind that I might

be doing, but as far as it most likely will be

a monthly show instead of weekly or every other

week just because all the other shows are either

weekly or every other week. I made a comment

to a friend of mine who does another podcast

or who's going to be doing another podcast over

on Earth, too. I said to Ronnie the other night,

I said, yeah, my friend and I were starting up

our own podcasting network. We're going to be

doing five shows simultaneously all at the same

time and all at once. She goes, oh my god, you

must be a podcasting machine. I said, yeah, maybe.

Close to that. I don't know. But it's gonna be

one hell of a ride. Oh yes. And I'm sure down

the line once obviously Beast Unleashed will

have a set in time. MWire and Tooncast, I'm still

working on the episodes for those. Start talking

because I'm about to cough. The Tooncast Mike

will be basically running that show all the way

and I'll be guest hosting on that for the most

part and as far as the Mware goes I will be also

the co -host of that show and he'll run whatever

episodes that he programs the the specific episode

for like for the specific movies, as I will do

the same when it comes to a movie that I've selected.

Yeah, I mean I think we pretty much have similar

taste in movies, so a lot of stuff that I've

put on the list so far is stuff that you would

watch anyways. There are some things on there

that you may not have seen in a while or you

may have never heard of, I don't know. And go

ahead feel free. You know I'll email you the

list and you can add or whatever Right now in

wire because right now the only episode we have

in stone right now is back to the future Which

is the first episode which will be in July? All

the other ones that I've written up they have

no air date they have I mean they could all be

changed around And they most likely will be because

I did not add in holiday themed films yet so

that's Right now, M -Wire's full schedule of

episodes is still subject to change. As far as

Tooncast goes, I think I've got a great lineup

with that so far. I've written out, I believe,

it's close to 38, 39 episodes for a list to talk

about. And then, of course, Beast Unleashed.

It's kind of almost self -explanatory. We're

going to be reviewing Beast Wars and Beast Machines.

Steve's going to be doing the Beast Wars stuff

and I'm going to be doing the Beast Machines

stuff. I will pretty much be running the Beast

Wars end of it as you will be running the Beast

Machines end of it. Yes. And then after that,

we're not sure. I know I still want to do a 24

podcast eventually, but that would require me

to have the DVDs, and I don't have them at this

point. I know I talked to Birdman about doing

that, and he said he'd be interested. I also

have another buddy of mine who does the iPhone

Doct and Mobile Tech Moment podcasts, Jeff Farina,

Ultimo119 on Twitter. He's a big 24 fan, so I

may ask him about that, because he'd probably

have more time than Mike does. So what are we

talking about in this first episode Steve? Well

in this first episode pretty much we are going

to talk about And this episode is going to be

pretty much short and sweet and to the point

considering This is our debut episode and yes

We're still deciding what we want to include

in the show overall. Oh, yeah so Pretty much

the main topic of this episode will be the GI

Joe resolute cartoon that is an adult swim on

Cartoon Network Yes, now this is not currently

running is it I mean I know you sent me the files

and I have them and there's 11 episodes It were

are they planning on doing anymore or is that

just it? I think at this point. I think they

were just using it as like a test ground to see

how it was going to play out. And I know right

now, as of this point in time, they have no desire

to do another series yet, but they were building

the hype with it, bridging this huge, huge, almost

20 -year gap between the original G .I. Joe and

this new movie that is coming out this August.

Yes, which will absolutely suck big balls from

what I've heard Yes, and from what I've heard

from many people including the guys on twig And

my own you know Thoughts on it. I don't believe

this movie will be any good whatsoever I think

it's just gonna be a crappy action flick and

there's gonna be no GI Joe I mean of course they're

gonna have the names and some of the likenesses

of them but they're gonna totally annihilate

that series. Yeah, they're gonna pretty much...

I wouldn't really call it a reboot, but they're

pretty much gonna character -assassinate the

entire series. I have seen the trailer that premiered

a while ago, and I'll admit I'm not the biggest

G .I. Joe fan. I don't dislike the series. I

don't... It was just when I was a kid I was more

into Transformers and everything else other than

GI Joe. I remember seeing a few episodes here

and there but it wasn't something that I sat

down to watch every day. So my knowledge of it

really isn't that you know it's not as far spread

as say Transformers or Knight Rider or you know

something like that. So I mean I'll have an opinion

about the The Resolute, which is what we're going

to be covering here, G .I. Joe Resolute. I'll

have an opinion about it, but I'm probably just

going to let you rant on it, because I really

can't form an overall opinion of the entire franchise.

Either way, because I wasn't really that exposed

to it. Well, see, now the original G .I. Joe,

I wasn't very familiar with the... the Sunbow

series of it. Like I knew some of it, but I know

that that was definitely more of a darker toned

G .I. Joe for the time. And the animation was

obviously much better than after the G .I. Joe

movie, which is where it peaked and Hasbro decided

that they couldn't afford to pay that company

anymore and so they basically They got basically

paid by Deke to take the series and Deke basically

did it for damn near nothing for Hasbro. So when

they did it, they had to revitalize the series

from the points of the movie because obviously

Cobra Commander is a snake and Duke is in a coma.

So they end up They tie up some of the loose

ends from season one in like the Dragonfire Episodes

they destroy Serpentor basically because they

turn them into a freaking lizard and So overall

and then Cobra Commander becomes himself again

and granted that's an entirely different series,

but the The characters from that series, for

the most part, are still in Resolute. Yes. And

Resolute is ten times darker, if not more, than

the original. Considering you actually see death,

there are not laser guns to shoot each other.

They actually use bullets and swords. There's

actual blood and death in the series. When I

first started watching it after you sent me the

files The first thing I thought of was Justice

League new frontier It is that it has that style

of animation and that style of gore The only

thing that I can really take from As an example

would be the beginning scene of New Frontier

where Hal Jordan is descending in his parachute.

He lands on this kid, the kid's going to stab

him but the war is over and he has no choice

but to shoot the kid in the head because the

kid's going to kill him. And it just shows the

blood spattering everywhere. So I mean that's

the same thing here in Resolute. I don't think

there were any moments when I watched the little

episode clips that I actually cringed or, you

know, felt like I was going to get sick or anything

from the violence, but it's very, very violent.

Yeah, and a lot of it's very graphical in the

sense that the first scene that you see has police

in Washington D .C. around the Lincoln Memorial

with a Cobra Dagger. In major bloods heart and

you see one of the main characters of the old

show dead and You have the GI Joe through scarlet

investigating this entire, you know who got killed

and there's a lot of a lot of the back -and -forth

with the ninjas and You know snake eyes and storm

storm shadow Cobra commander alludes to the fact

that this could possibly be a continuation in

one of his quotes. It says, and I'm reading this

from the Wikipedia of his quote, because I don't

have it wrote down, that it suited me to once

appear to be weak and cowardly because it motivated

you people to think. But today is a new day.

There will be no... Moves to take over my command

there will be no mistakes. There'll be none of

your crap none of it So basically he's saying

that he's not putting up with any more shit He's

just gonna start killing them if they start fucking

off. Yep And he actually does that in a couple

scenes considering some of the technicians tell

him that there's no way they can do something

So he just pulls out a sword slices them in half

and let some fall to the floor. Yeah Yeah, I

am I'm very I'm trying to remain indifferent

about it. I think the only thing that really

Kind of sways me to the negative about it, and

it's a minor gripe because obviously mr. Lada

is passed away, but They could have found a closer

match voice to his I mean because for the most

part from what I understand from GI Joe fans

from people that I've talked to They always associate

Cobra commander with that voice And that's the

same thing with me, even though I didn't have

a lot of experience or exposure to G .I. Joe

when I was younger, I knew who Cobra Commander

was. I knew who that voice was, because obviously

a lot of voice screams, so it's the same voice.

But this one, it was darker, I don't know who

did it, I don't know who did the voice, but I

think they could have gotten something a little

bit more of an homage if they found someone...

to not really copy Chris Lada, but to get close

to that sound of his voice. Yeah. Honestly, I

would have rather that they'd kept closer to

the original, like you're saying, because I just...

I mean, yeah, it was a good voice, and it wasn't

the most annoying, like some of the previous

G .I. Joe little special movie features that

they've had in recent years. They haven't been

lame like that of somebody trying to basically

mock the original voice But it would have been

nice just actually see and hear the original

like as close as they can get it. Yeah Yeah,

I'm trying to think of a comparison here and

I It's not coming to me. I was trying to think

of another role in an animation that originally

had one voice actor and then moved on and oh

I know what it was Omega Supreme and Transformers

in the original I believe it was Greg Berger

that did it I'm not sure I can't can't be quoted

as saying that's correct but I know that in animated

Kevin Michael Richardson does it And I actually

had to double check and look and see who Omega

was in Transformers Animated. And it wasn't the

original voice actor, but the voice, because

I thought it was, sounded so much similar. So

if they had done that, I think I could have got

past it a little bit better. Hell, I didn't know

who Flint was for the first six episodes until

somebody actually said his name. I didn't realize

he was even there. Yeah, they do have 90 % of

the original Casting in there and they have like

real quick parts because obviously they're five

minute episodes give or take and There's a lot

of like references to other aspects of GI Joe

Another weird thing with this show is that they

had content that you can unlock through the website

right by Punching in the code at the end of the

episode. Yeah, I mean everything nowadays is

is fucking interactive I mean, that's the whole

point And I could go into a rant about that,

but I'll save that for another time. I Don't

know is snake eyes did he always not talk No,

what happened is if you noticed in the resolute

he got shot in the mouth. Oh, that's right Basically

in the flashback face. Yep in the flashback when

he was trying to save his master. Right, right.

Okay, I gotcha. In the original show I think

something similar happened like he either got

shot or he got an explosion happened at him real

close. I think it was an explosion because his

face I remembered was scarred and burnt after

that and they had him wrapped up in rags for

a while. Yeah. I think my favorite scene out

of the entire thing was the one dude, I forget

what his name is, the engineered dude that comes

up with a great plan to demolish the satellites.

And I like that whole thing up in the, you know,

like, I don't know. 68 ,000 feet above the earth

or whatever it is and they're knees hopping from

satellite to satellite and that was kind of cool

Yeah, that was that was a tunnel rat but I Really

don't I don't this I don't overly hate it and

I don't overly like it. It's just there for me

Again These aren't robotic characters. They're

human characters So me I would think that they

would age and they would all be too freaking

old to do this stuff But I mean if you're gonna

if you're gonna directly say and I don't think

they actually do directly say but if you're gonna

directly Say this ties into the old show How

the hell are these characters still the same

age? You know, I mean, I don't know I Don't know

It's just weird. You want to hear another interesting

tidbit? Sure. Stephen Bloom of Wolverine and

the Axemen, Cowboy Bebop, pretty much voices

90 % of the male voices in the show. Oh really?

Yeah. I don't know who does Cobra Commander,

but it could be possibly him. Yeah, I'm not really

sure. And the fourth episode of this is the only

episode to not start out with the USS flag in

the beginning. Yes. One of my main problems with

the whole USS flag thing. It says the location

is classified confidential. Whatever it says

in the little beginning. Now how the hell did

Cobra find it if it's classified? Probably they

used the satellites after they keep trying to

send signals. Yeah, that's true. I mean they

could. Yeah, I can see that. Yeah, but for the

most part this series I'd have to say is overall

really well, really greatly executed. I would

like to see them actually continue it and see

what happens since the spot where Duke locks

Cobra Commander in his own protective chamber

and the nuke goes off in Illinois. Because you

know Cobra commander's not dead. Yes. Yes. He's

the only member not captured to the high command

of Cobra What'd you think of the barrenness in

this? Freak Well, look who she's dating Destro

or desperate or whatever the hell his name is.

Yeah, it's Destro. Yes. I like wearing a silver

helmet. I Mean it's supposed to be like a family

heirloom, but it's Yeah, it's like a battle armor

for him, but still... Who the hell would want

to wear it? Well, of course Cobra Commander wears

a mask too, so... Yeah, that's true. I'll tell

you one thing that it doesn't directly relate

to this, but when I first saw... What the hell

was that? Don't know. Came from your end, not

mine. I don't have a clue. When I first Saw the

Batman Beyond episode and I know this is kind

of a topic but the Batman Beyond episodes curse

of the Cobra I was like, oh crap. They're bringing

Cobra back into Batman Beyond and he's all it's

all these like lizard type people and it is just

weird But I was like wow that that would be a

crazy crossover the Batman universe with Cobra

and Cobra Commander in it, that would be kind

of weird. Yeah, that definitely would be. Yeah,

I don't know. Yeah, I really don't have too much

else to say about this one. One thing I would

like, if they did do it, is to clean it up a

little bit, because for me, it wasn't that...

The animation itself was okay, but the actual

video quality sucked. Well, that's because of

the videos I downloaded. They actually looked

a lot nicer if you were watching it on the TV.

Oh, okay. Well, maybe they could release a DVD

of it. Hell, they release a single disc DVD for

everything else that comes out half the time.

Hell, they're giving Batman, Brave and the Bold

a four episode release, volume one. God. Well

see this is only about an hour long all together

so I'd like to see them actually just release

this as an episode clip or just one DVD and have

all this on there as well as like some special

features and maybe you know some interviews with

people involved and then you know just have it

released or even if it's ten bucks just you know

something small but or even better included in

the GI Joe box set that's supposed to come out

later this year. Yeah I don't think they'll do

that. I don't think so either, because it's different.

That'd be like releasing G .I. Joe Extreme with

the original. No, we're not doing that. It'll

never happen. But yeah, and another thing I'd

like to see them do besides, you know, make it

longer is differentiate the voices, because they

all sound the same. They all sound kind of like

bland. They don't really sound like there's too

much emotion in it. It feels rushed. Think the

only one that sounded okay outside of like Duke

and and scarlet The little girl little tech girl

Yeah, she sounded about the only different sounding

voices I did like how they kind of did Like you

said before they kind of blended it into the

old series how all the GI Joe sites have been

abandoned over the over a time period and they

all open up and Act all the vehicles activate

and everything else. I thought that was kind

of cool Yeah, that was a pretty nice feature

like dusting off the cobwebs Yep, that's another

thing that leads me to think that this takes

place in the future because Cobra could was shut

down for so many years and all of a sudden launches

this plan out of nowhere with the start of the

death of Major Blood and all the GI Joe was pretty

much just sitting on the USS flag kinda like

okay this sucks what's going on and then Cobra

decides to surface again It's like the Optimus

Megatron syndrome when you get Cobra Commander

and Duke going head to head. Yeah, I don't remember.

Did G .I. Joe come first or did Transformers?

I forget. I'm not really sure, but I can look

it up. I'm gonna look that up on Wikipedia. I'm

not sure if G .I. Joe came a year before Transformers.

I know He -Man came in 83. I'm not sure when

G .I. Joe did, because I know that both of those

series ran back -to -back, or not back -to -back,

but I mean the writers and the contributors kind

of ran between both of them because they were

both Hasbro properties. Well, this is what happened.

Transformers was started up in 84 from the Takara

lines when it became Hasbro. G .I. Joe was originally

initiated in the in the sixties. But when did

the Sunbow cartoon start is what I'm saying.

They relaunched everything with the Cobra organization

in 82. Well what I was, comparison I was trying

to make was you know you said the the Optimus

Megatron Duke Cobra thing is kinda kinda similar.

I was trying to see which one copied off the

other. That would be Transformers then because

GI Joe is longer running than Transformers. It

is raining like hell outside. Why the hell did

you send your damn rain down here? I don't know

but I'm glad it's not here because I get to go

to work and in approximately 40 minutes I will

be at work so I don't really care. Alright, do

we have anything else to say about this? No,

I think that about wraps up the GI Joe Resolute

topic for this week. I know that you and I are

still discussing what to do for the next episode.

I'm not sure when that will get released. I know

this one will be out before my wedding. Yep,

pretty much all episodes other than ATTF 24,

which we're going to be doing this Friday, pretty

much all episodes are on hiatus until June 5th.

Um... June 5th will be the release of I think

Haven't decided I know Michael and I are going

to record episode 17 and 18 at the end of May

for TFG one So there may be June 5th, maybe a

double release date It may be 17 and 18 on that

same day. I haven't really decided on that ATTF

25 will I actually mentioned this to you earlier

today? I think it was today or yesterday. I forget

Because I have acquired yet another interview

with Mr. Stan Bush Kind of like a BotCon recap

kind of like just asking him how it was and what

You know what his experience was and can he can

we kind of like live vicariously through him

and you know? What all did he see stuff like

that? I think we're going to be setting that

up for Saturday June 6th to record for ATTF 25

And I thought that was a cool a cool way to kick

off the 25th episode of of all things transformers

As far as everything else it does that they do

have separate release dates tune cast won't be

till August M wire is in July beast unleashed

at this point As soon as I come up with some

cash to get the DVDs for Beast Wars I do have

a source to get them that is fairly reliable

That I'll be able to get them at pretty much

any time. It's just coming up with the cash to

do so Yes, yes, I know I know you want me to

hurry up and get them well Send me a hundred

and something dollars and I can get them from

rhino .com I'm trying to think what else. I do

have several ideas for this show here for GCRP

or whatever we're going to call it. I did have

one like iPhone talk type of deal where I think

my buddy Jeff Farina from iPhone Doct and Mobile

Tech Moment might be joining me. I haven't really

worked the details out with him on that yet but

I will eventually. So yeah, pretty much like

I said everything's kind of on hiatus until June

5th Yep, so pretty much We'll have the last ATTF

this week This should be released this week if

not the very beginning of next week Because I'll

still have Three to four days to do this next

week. Yeah Probably won't record anything next

week at all. That's fine. And then we'll probably

come back and do, obviously we're going to do

TFG1 and ATTF and then probably a GCR episode.

But for now I guess that wraps this show up.

Yeah. For the episode 1. Yes it does. And I just

want to say with our little hiatus here, that

gives everybody that listens to the shows that

are currently running to go back and re -listen

to the ones that you haven't listened to yet.

So you've got two and a half weeks to catch up.

And especially listen to episode 16, the 3 hour

58 minute long Transformers movie roundtable.

A lot of work both on editing and recording went

into that. Yes, and if you do have a chance to

listen to it, listen to it because... It has

Stan Bush. It has Stan Bush. What more can you

ask for? Yeah, well my recommendation is to do

it either if you can listen to it on your job,

I would do it then, or find a bunch of shit to

do at home. and just listen because that's how

I had to do it. Otherwise you're fast -forwarding

or if you get like an iPod, I know they sometimes

stay in the same spot. If you've got a generic

brand of MP3 player, you're kind of screwed unless

you listen to it all in one sitting. Michael

asked me after it was released, he goes, wait,

because I didn't tell him how long it was going

to be. He goes, wait. It's three hours 58 minutes.

What the can't you break it up into two parts?

I said, uh, nope It's it's it's one fluid thing

and even though that half of the clips are kind

of jumbled because I kind of started and stopped

each one like it was a regular episode of the

podcast Because obviously I didn't know when

I was gonna be able to record with all the people

that I recorded with Even though that part is

a jumbled mess you get all kinds of Stan Bush

music even if you're not a Stan Bush fan You

you know these songs And you know you get I think

my interview with Stan was like 26 28 30 minutes

something like that Something around yeah, I

don't remember so I mean like Steve said you

know open your iTunes on your computer at home

Just start it and then crank not crank it up

like you know rock out to it or anything You

know turn it up enough to where you're gonna

be able to hear it and go vacuum or you know

take it I won't take your trash out and you wouldn't

be able to hear it, but anyway. Yeah, just go

listen people damn it Yes, and I guess for now

before we start rambling on anymore, and so I

can get ready for work unfortunately I am Once

and always Steve slash Megatron. And I am TFG1

Mike and we are the GeekCast Radio Network. We

will see you later. Later.
