Question: What did you think of this years Oscars?
Geeks:
Kevin @OptimusSolo
Dan @MovieRevolt
Amanda @HardCandiMandi
Starscream here, and I am the Lord and Master
of the Geekcast Radio Network. Don't tell Megatron.
Today on Episode 84 of The Cinema Geeks, we give
you our thoughts on the new Ghostbusters trailer,
we let you know the best place to buy your Force
Awakens copy, and we give you our reactions to
the Academy Awards. All that and more coming
up on Episode 84 with The Cinema Geeks. That's
right, it's episode 84 of The Cinema Geeks. I
am one of your Cinema Geeks, Kevin Optimus Solo,
joining me as usual as movie rebel Dan. Hello.
Hey, how's it going? Not too bad. And hard candy,
Mandy. Hello. What's up? Not too much. And we
are back at it with another episode here. Last
week we gave you our March preview and per request,
I don't know if you guys saw this, but on the
website for the last episode, someone even asked,
will we be covering the Oscars? So that is the
theme for today. So our main attraction will
be our reactions to the Academy Awards. But in
the meantime, we will talk a little bit about
some news and then we'll close it out with talking
about some movies that we've been watching over
the last week or so. Before we get to all that,
Amanda, how's your week been going? Same old,
same old, I guess. You know, living the dream.
Living the dream doing some arcade gaming. Oh
my gosh. I was crushing it. I killed Kevin so
hardcore and never happens in anything Yeah,
I like wrecked him at air hockey like everything
I was just crushing it. I think the only thing
that he beat me at was like the NBA game We're
like just shooting the basketball and his score
was 55 and mine was 51. So And then as far as
my week goes somehow randomly taught our baby
kitten how to play fetch my furry baby yeah so
that was interesting and uh he does it a lot
but it's just with one toy just with one toy
and just with me but he will play fetch like
a dog now so uh i guess i got that going for
me it was funny though too because i was just
like We should try to teach him how to play fetch.
He just started doing it. He just started doing
it on his own. So I was like, well, I didn't
really do much in teaching and then call his
name once he had it in his mouth and he ran over
every time. So that's how my week's been going
outside of the mundane work stuff. So Dan, how
about you? How's your week been going? Ironically,
I taught my son how to play fetch. No, it's been
pretty uneventful for me here. So nothing too
big, nothing really much going on. Looking forward
to this weekend though because I'm taking this
on to get his photo with the Easter Bunny so
I'm hoping we don't freak him out too much because
the Easter Bunny is one weird looking dude. Especially
some of those costumes for the Easter Bunny.
There's some really scary ones, this giant bunny
that doesn't blink. It'll either be afraid of
rabbits the rest of his life or as long as it's
not a clown I think you're safe. I got pushed
off a bench by the Easter Bunny when I was little.
Like, he literally, like, G'd me. Were you talking
smack to him? No, I was just sitting there and
he kept scooting closer and closer to me until
he, like, scooted me off the bench. But Easter
Bunny wasn't just a guy in a bunny suit. There
wasn't an actual set up for you in bunny photos.
It was a park bench and some guy just in a costume
trying to... No, I was in the Colonial Village
mall to see the freaking Easter Bunny and apparently
he's coming back from his break or something
and he just... I mean, we live in Rockford. It's
pretty hood anyway. So this bunny just went straight
G and was like, fuck this little kid. I don't
know. Alrighty then. Oh man, so looking forward
to bad Easter bunny coming to the theater. Just
make sure you avoid the break time. You gotta
have him only when he's in character. I wasn't
fucking with him. I just looked terrified. I'm
sure he's like, I'm gonna fuck with this kid.
Scard is a kid for life. Alright, so starting
off with some new stories today. An article this
week about the next chapter in the Big Hero 6
world. And for once, guys, we're not talking
about a sequel. Or a reboot. We're actually talking
about the next chapter in the Big Hero 6 franchise
will be a television series. So go in the route
of a TV series. Dan, is that better than giving
us another sequel reboot slash whatever of every
other animated movie? I don't know. I kind of
feel like Big Hero 6 is one that could... sustain
a sequel, but I see what they're doing here,
because I do feel like that was the norm a lot
of times when it came to Disney movies. I remember
Aladdin had a TV series, Lion King, so I don't
know if they're trying to go back to that. And
it does have a format that does seem like it
maybe would be best for TV, with its, like, you
know, its superhero team that it has, but I don't
know. Considering how much money that movie made,
I'm... Don't know that necessarily if this means
we won't get a sequel because you know, they
had the how to tune your dragon series as well
We got a sequel to that. So it's just I think
you know Disney milking it for the most as they
possibly can Yeah, I can see that and I think
There's been some series that are kind of come
into their their clothes on a couple of the different
channels out there this year some long -running
ones So I think there is some openings for something
new. So does it make me wonder why they never
made like a wreck at Rouse? TV series, because
I feel like that would even be better. Yeah,
that would be... I'm behind that. Let's get the
news on that, because I'd like to see a bunch
of different worlds they go into. All the different
arcade machines. It could be like a different
one. You just got super freaking excited. I know,
I didn't. That was like my mind blown. He was
like, like, bit -pumping and stuff over here.
Yes. Alright. Amanda, what about you? Would you
rather see a Big Hero 6 2 movie or the series?
Uh, I think you could... Or you could care less
of either one? I really liked it. I saw it in
the theater without you, P .S. I think that it
could have gone either way. I think it would
have done good as a sequel. It's not going to
be a reboot. It's only been like a year or so.
Oh yeah, I haven't seen the sequel. I'm just
saying. Sequel, I think it could have done well.
But maybe like Dan said, they want to milk it
a little bit and give it a TV series. I think
it'll do good as a TV series because it's a super
team and they can have all these other different
villains they're kind of coming up against all
the time. I think it'd go either way, really.
But again, probably not as good as the Wreck
-It Ralph series. I'm sticking with that. That's
my answer. In other news, in case anyone was
counting down the days until they can watch The
Force Awakens on Blu -ray, even though it's probably
still in theater at a lot of places, but apparently
it's already coming out very soon. It's slotted
or... been rumored that it's going to be somewhere
around the first or second week of April that
the blu -ray is actually going to be released
for Star Wars The Force Awakens and if anybody
is trying to figure out where they should go
or who's going to have the best deal article
this week telling you that apparently Target
is the place to go. It's going to have collectible
packaging, it's going to have 20 minutes of special
features only available on the Target copy, including
interviews with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and
a deeper look, quote, at the movie's weaponry.
So not that anybody really probably needs to
react too much to that, but damn, you're surprised
it's coming out on video that soon. I'm not too
surprised because I feel like that's becoming
the norm more and more. I'm just really hating
this thing they're doing now with the exclusives
per each store gets like their own exclusive
or anything. It's really annoying. So I think
it really hurts people who want to collect this
stuff because you're always getting like half
of a Blu -ray or half of a collector's edition
because each store... Right, you have to get
them all to get everything together. Exactly,
so it's... I don't know. I feel like it's a cheap
trick that they're doing, and a reason why I
feel like packaged media might be dying, because
people are like, well, I'll just get the digital
copy, because why bother getting something if
I'm just going to get half of it anyway? Yeah,
I'd prefer if there was just like one... Awesome
copy. You know what I mean? Like one ultimate
copy. That's all I need in my collection. Give
me everything that's included all in one. It's
almost better sometimes waiting until there's
some type of like anniversary. Yeah, I mean I'm
probably just wait till they have a trilogy and
like have a super duper like, you know, BB -8.
It includes all the stuff. It's like a life -size
BB -8 that includes all the blu -rays or something
like that. And lightsabers. Kevin has a sweet
Ninja Turtles box set, but it's like they're...
and it rolls on wheels and everything. It's legit.
Yeah. That's why I wait. I wait until it's gonna
be something awesome and then I don't have to
waste my money getting all the half... past installments.
Alright, so that was your news for Star Wars,
so apparently if you're a die -hard person that
wants to guess whatever is going to be the best
copy, I guess it's going to be a target, but
like Dan said, there's probably going to be various
copies everywhere, so it's hard to say. Or as
some other news goes, I know we talked about
John Wick 2 being pushed to 2017. In case anyone
is clamoring those... for a little bit more John
Wiccan news. Keanu Reeves has had a couple statements
here in relation to the film and kind of where
it's going and I guess the the headline there
as far as what he was saying is he said quote
if the first one was a black belt then this one
is third degree black belt so apparently it's
gonna up the ante so to speak and As far as what
they say, as far as the content of it, his biggest
interest was opening up the world, the underground
world, you know, behind the world in terms of
the assassins and kind of how that whole universe
works. And I think that was one of the most appealing
things about the film, regardless of the main
storyline with John Wick and his... motivation
for what he was doing i think a lot of people
found some appeal in the world that it was kind
of creating in that universe and kind of how
it all worked and the rules etc so dan do you
think it's a good direction to go as far as uh
kind of getting more into that underground world
i think the only direction you really can't go
because you can't just like i don't know have
him have another pet that gets killed oh that
would just be bad so but i just how much do you
think you can up the ante i don't know i If they
can take Liam Neeson's kids three times, they
can figure out a way to make John Wick work.
I think that makes sense, because like you said,
I think it was a huge bonus for that movie, because
it did add another element to that that wasn't
just action. It made it seem like this interesting
world that had a lot of cool premise. And how
it just didn't really explain it. It just kind
of brought it to you, and you kind of figured
it out along the way. So I think that'd be a
cool thing to expand upon. I guess I should call
it the correct title now, because it does have
one. John Wick Chapter Two. Are you excited for
Chapter Two? Yeah, what I'm not excited about
is having to wait even longer for it. Not really
looking forward to that part, but third degree
black belt. Not really sure how many fucking
degrees of black belts there are, but I'm pretty
sure that it's going to be another thrill ride.
I just want to see him buff some motherfuckers
up. I just want to see them scare more people
without saying anything to them or anything.
Just the notion. All right, so we'll have to
see when that actually comes out in 2017, but
I think there's a lot of people looking forward
to it. Other films that are on the horizon for
2017, I guess, and 2018, we have official release
dates for the next Alien film, as well as the
Predator film. So, Alien Covenant, August 4th.
2017 so push forward to August 4th 2017 and the
Predator March 2nd 2018 so you can go ahead and
slot those on your calendar and start the uh
why are you dangling the shit in front of me
like don't talk to me about this yet because
i'm just going to sit here and stew that it's
not now and they did add some cast to the Alien
Covenant film which apparently is going to be
starring Michael Fassbender, and there's going
to be some type of crew that is or like colony
ship That's going to arrive in that planet, and
they've added a bunch of people most of them.
I don't know who these characters are so It doesn't
mean a lot to me, but if you're real interested
in the alien covenant film there is some cast
Names that are being dropped there Danny you're
excited to see Michael Fassbender as a as a Android
in the alien universe so is this A continuation
of Prometheus, then? Since you played that character
in Prometheus? Yeah, I think it's basically a
continuation of that. I think what he was saying
is that at some point he wanted to make it a
Prometheus, almost like a trilogy, as far as
that goes, and I guess this would be the next
chapter, but I am confused on that whole time.
I don't know because the end of Prometheus he
was just a head so In science fiction you can
do anything I mean I loved him in Prometheus
and I thought it was a great performance and
a great character so I'm all for seeing more
of that again, but Yeah, I mean I'm just getting
confused over because there's another talk about
another alien movie So it's just the point where
it's like I don't know which one is which but
yeah Yeah, I think that whole universe is being
a little bit hard to understand with all the
different rumors. That's why I guess we just
have to wait until something actually comes out
for us to figure out what anybody is talking
about. But it sounds like a pretty similar concept
to some of the other alien films, so hopefully
it can find a unique execution style or some
ways to twist it up a little bit, which I'm sure
they will based on Prometheus and... We'll have
to see. I know that was a divisive film. A lot
of people liked it, and a lot of people hated
it. So we'll have to see how this next one goes.
I didn't mind it that much. I'm actually looking
forward to rewatching it. We started watching
alien films back a few weeks or a month or so
ago, and we still got the last alien film as
well as Prometheus to catch up with before we
complete that. And I've only seen Prometheus
the one time. Yeah, so why? I was pretty fucking
disturbed, though. So I'm interested to see it
again, especially now with recently watching
all the alien films to see how it kind of plays
out. But Amanda, are you, you're just mad that
they keep dangling stuff as far as into the distant
future and you want it now? Now, now, now. Not...
Instant gratification? Yeah, I'm that person.
I just want the instant oatmeal of movies here,
then I need it now. I think I'm looking more
so forward to... The Predator movie an alien,
but I mean Michael Fassbender Definitely up the
ante for me still so all right, so You only have
a year or two to wait for those things guys so
as far as the last news story just kind of an
interesting tidbit more of a trivia piece I guess
and I Don't know how many people would believe
this but apparently there was actually a connection
between Final destination and the X files and
according to Final Destination writer Jeffrey
Reddick the whole plot and idea for Final Destination
was originally a X -Files episode script that
he was trying to get made into one of the X -Files
episode and instead it didn't work out and it
turned into the actual film kind of spun off
into some different directions and probably changed
quite a bit but uh... Yeah, apparently there
was originally going to be an episode of The
X -Files. It wasn't called Final Destination.
It was going to be called Flight 180, but talking
about premonitions and cheating death and stuff
like that. I really, really enjoyed the first
Final Destination movie. I did too. I haven't
seen it in a long time, but I remember liking
it. And then I remember seeing, like... the second
half of Final Destination 86 or something like
that. It seemed like it had gone off the deep
end, like almost into Sharknado territory at
that point. I've seen three of them, is there
more than that? I don't know, there was like
THE Final Destination, and then there was like
seven more after that, so I don't know. I got
to the point where it legitimately was just,
let's find the most crazy way to kill people
as possible. You didn't really mess me up when
I was younger and saw that, though. Like, that
was pretty freaking disturbing. I'm still scared
of shit like that because of the discard cards.
There's a couple things that it's like, yeah,
a little cringe -worthy as far as seeing that
and then having to think about that every time
you're doing whatever in the same area. Yeah,
that guy that died in the shower, like, strangled
himself with the shower thing. I'm freaked out
every time I go in our guest bathroom. And there's
not even, like, the shower head is kind of, um...
Not the same, but it's got the same kind of idea
and it freaks me out every time I'm like I'm
gonna slip and strangle myself an accident Kevin's
not gonna hear me I'm gonna die I thought that
was somewhat of an interesting tidbit as far
as any X -Files fans or Final Destination fans.
I don't know why that made an article or a headline
or why we're even talking to the writer of Final
Destination, but it was out there so I thought
I'd share. Well, probably because of the resurgence
of X -Files, that's why, brah. Alright, good
point. That could be. That's why. You're right.
Don't count me. Alright. And then finally the
last up... The big news for this week that everybody
has been talking about, Dan, the release of the
Ghostbusters trailer. Fucking A -right. Apparently
Amanda would like to talk first. That's like
the first thing I saw this morning when I got
my sleepy eyes on and I'm... scrolling through
my Facebook feed and I saw that and instantly
I was awake and I had that shit cranked up and
I was watching it and I lost my shit a little
bit. I really, really liked it. I'm super excited
now that I've seen this trailer. I was looking
forward to it but I was still kind of on the
edge of like, are they gonna pull this off? How's
this gonna work? It's got some cool names attached
to it. Love the franchise. But you know, it's
not Bill Murray or whatever. But it's got my
girl. Fucking Tammy's in this shit love that
bitch and I think they did a really really awesome
job at Everything that I've seen so far from
this trailer like the ghosts look pretty fucking
awesome I think that some of the jokes are pretty
funny. It's like this dry humor because they're
scientists it works. I think that The dynamic
of the characters look pretty fucking cool and
fun, and I would just wanted to hang out with
them. I'm just I'm really excited. I think even
the way they kind of like changed the song a
little bit was like the piano, creepy, ominous
version of the Ghostbusters theme was super awesome.
I'm just so important. You're on like level nine
right now. Dan, is she the only one that had
that positive of a reaction to that trailer?
I think it's, I saw a lot of people that really,
really liked it too. So, I don't know, and I
saw the people who hated it and I think I'm,
I'm someplace - He has the whole time I'm looking
at you, bastard. Come on, Joe. I have some strong
feelings. I'm so mad he didn't like it. I'm so
mad. Somewhere in the middle there are things
that I do like. I do think like Amanda mentioned
that visually it looks really great like the
look of the ghost. It looks like an updated version
of the look of the ghost from the original but
not like to the point where it's not too realistic
but realistic enough so it works for a comedy.
I do think the cast seems like they're gonna
have pretty good chemistry working with one another.
I love that cast. I think it's a really strong
cast. They're all really talented and I'm really
big fans of pretty much all of them. I don't
know though, not all the jokes really landed
for me a great deal. I guess I didn't really
know what to expect with it. Something about
it, I can't really put my finger on it, but it
didn't quite work for me. Not all the jokes.
I know if it was it's not that it wasn't it was
too slapsticky, but it just I Wasn't expecting
them to be as big of characters as they seem
to be but again I could just beat the trailer
because to be honest when I look at Paul Fahey
movies when it comes to the trailers like Keats
and spy I didn't like those trailers, but I ended
up liking all the movies more than I Expected
to so maybe that that's the case where the best
jokes Yeah, maybe it's a good thing that not
all the best jokes are in the trailer. Yeah I
thought it was just enough of a teaser. It just
gave you kind of a feel of it. I feel like the
focus... I'm not a huge Ghostbusters fan. I know
that might be sacrilegious, but I wasn't even
a humongous original Ghostbusters fan. I like
it, but I'm never giddy about it, I guess. But
I feel like the intention of that trailer was
not to necessarily be funny, though. I feel like
the intention was to kind of... Show the the
feeling of it the aesthetic of it like connect
to the original Ghostbusters sounds and and some
of the visuals and Just give us a glimpse of
this new cast and kind of how that's going to
play out. So I don't know if I'm going to judge
it negative or positive based on the jokes that
are in there because I feel like that necessarily
wasn't the intention. Yeah, especially for jokes
for trailer are hard because the way trailers
are edited, the way jokes are made in a trailer
may not actually be the way they're made in the
movie. Right. You see that a lot where it's like
certain scenes are put together that have nothing
to do with one another. So but I thought Melissa
McCarthy feel like she's playing a more toned
down version, she's not playing a huge character,
which I didn't, it seems like Kate McKinnon is
the one who's playing like a crazy character.
But, you know, I'm, I'm still - I thought she
seemed quirky and cool though. Yeah, like not
necessarily in a bad way, but just like she seems
kind of like, I felt like they all have their
niche that should work well. Right. So they should
compliment each other pretty well. Like I said,
I'm not, I'm not. over the moon with it there's
some things I feel like they can build upon there's
a lot of positives to take out of it but it's
not like I am like over the moon super excited
now so and I'm pretty much in your camp too Dan
it was it wasn't anything that was gonna it didn't
wreck the my interest of the film or not it didn't
elevate it necessarily that much but I did like
the musical part though I will agree with Amanda
there I liked the the more subdued paced out
piano classic Ghostbusters theme going with that.
I did enjoy that. Alright, you will have to let
us know how you feel about the Ghostbusters trailer
in the comments on this episode post because
we'd be interested to see other people's takes
and which people are super excited or which people
are on the DJ Valentine boat. I'm not so excited
about that trailer. I still love you though,
DJ. Alright, we're going to take a quick break.
When we come back though, we will give you our
reactions on the Academy Awards, the show, the
host, the winners, and everything that goes into
the Oscars. So we'll be right back after the
break. Hey guys it's Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy
Mandy and we just wanted to let you guys know
about another podcast out there that we both
think you would all enjoy. It's one of both of
our favorite shows to listen to and it's none
other than the True Bromance podcast. True Bromance
is a movie podcast hosted by longtime friends
Hiro and Barry and if you like to smile, laugh,
and just be genuinely entertained while listening
to movie talk then this is definitely the right
show for you. Each week, the guys break down
a recently released movie, and not only do they
tie in the movie that week to the beers that
they are drinking during the show, but they also
tie it into a real fun top and bottom five list
associated with that movie. It's a blast hearing
both sides of these lists, and it definitely
makes them unique amongst all other movie review
podcast. So we definitely want to recommend all
of you guys to go check out their show. Just
search out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes,
Stitcher, and all other podcast platforms. And
if you listen via iTunes, do us a favor and leave
them a five -star review. And don't forget to
let them know that the Cinema Geeks sent you.
On the Simplistic Reviews podcast, we talk movies.
We talk TV. We talk. Hello Julie, what the heck
are you doing? Trying to make our spot sound
more exciting by adding explosions Yeah, I'm
pretty sure you could have got the point across
with sound effects. Not the real thing Download
the show on iTunes or if simplistic reviews dot
blog spot dot com I'm sure your insurance company
will cover that. No, they won't. No, they probably
won't Thanks for sticking with us It is time
for the main attraction. Like we said, we're
going to be talking about this year's Oscars.
They just happened. We had requests on the website
asking if we were going to talk about the Oscars.
And yes, we are. So that is the time to do that
right now. Dan, let's start with you and first
question for you about the Oscars. Obviously
the big anticipation, maybe even more anticipation
on this than there was on who is going to win
some of the awards. I think there was a lot of
anticipation on what was going to happen. when
Chris Rock took the stage. So how did you feel
Chris Rock did as a host this year? You know,
the hosts of award ceremonies get a lot of discussion,
it seems like, and seems like... A majority of
the time people hate the host or think they did
terrible, even if it's people that they like
and, you know, talented actors or comedians or
etc. A lot of times it falls flat. How did you
think Chris Rock did this year? Well, yeah, I
do feel like what the Oscar host job is one that's
a thankless job because it's impossible to please
everyone because you're as a host. You're playing
to a room of people that take themselves way
too seriously and often aren't willing. they're
like almost refusing to laugh in times and then
you're appealing to a broad audience but then
people get angry if you have broad jokes and
want you to be a little bit more escape but then
when you are escape people are like well you
have to consider those families watching so then
it's this never it's never ending battle but
uh you know i think the oscars in a way a weird
way did ended up depending fitting from the fact
that chris rock was the host and with all the
you know oscar show white talk the whole the
political land and racial landscape that was
occurring around it he was probably the best
person they could have got to kind of deal with
it because I can't imagine if you had you know
someone like I don't know who hosted last year
or like a Seth MacFarlane or something like that
where it would probably not be nearly as good
but I thought he was great as an Oscar host I
thought he dealt with the uh the entire issue
as a whole and pretty much hitting every aspect
of it from the people who boycotted to you know
the history of it to where it's coming from to
like trying to not really leave anyone unscathed
in some ways not all the the uh jokes landed
some of the things like some of the bits weren't
nearly as funny like the girl scouts cookies
thing. I thought it just kind of seemed random
and didn't really have a point to it. There were
some jokes that really fell flat, like the accountant
bringing out the young Asian kids as accountants,
which seems to go against everything that they
were talking about earlier. his opening monologue
I thought was fantastic and poignant and funny
and everything it needed to be everything I expected
it to be from Chris Rock and some of the skits
things are actually pretty funny too like the
like the first one they did with like Tracy Morgan
as the Danish girl and that was actually quite
good so overall I thought when it comes to just
the spectacle that was the Oscars it was one
of the better ones in quite a while Yeah, I am
in full agreement with you. I think it started
off definitely with a bang. I think there was
a couple jaw -dropping lines that he had in that
opening monologue that were just hilarious. His
bit on Will Smith was hysterical. Well, his bit
on Cheetah, think of Smith. not even it's like
you boycotted something you didn't even get invited
to but that was funny i think it was at its peak
at the beginning um i do think that bit that
you talked about with the different uh different
people in the best picture uh skits was funny
i think as the skits went on throughout the rest
of the show there was a couple other ones that
maybe didn't like you said, hit as well. But
yeah, I thought there was even a funny line by
him later. I can't remember what exactly they
were talking about where he said even he wasn't
going to touch that. He's not trying to get in
trouble. After everything else, he said an inch
in the opening monologue. I thought that was
pretty hysterical. But yeah, I think it was perfect.
I was trying to picture how nervous the actual
people behind the Academy were when they realized
that they had lined him up as a host. And then.
on top of all the controversy that happened.
If they were like, is there a way we can get
him off of the show? But I thought he was phenomenal.
I think he added a lot to what's sometimes going
to be a rather lame opening. And we didn't have
to worry about the pick on each main actor from
each main movie type thing. We got something
different. So I appreciated that. So I thought
he was awesome. Amanda, what did you think? I
don't think he spared any punches. I think that...
They were all within good taste, too, and like
you said, he didn't discriminate who he threw
under the bus or busted out or whatever, and
I think he was the perfect person to have host
this, you know, the one was surrounding all the
controversy, and he was the one that is... he's
so established now that he can... Basically say
whatever he wants and there's either gonna be
those people who like him or don't he's not gonna
sway people To either like him or to not really
I don't think because he's already got his audience
so he can say whatever he wants and I think that
he used that to his advantage Advantage and I
think that he He I think he was actually pretty
tasteful with it if you ask me I don't think
that there's anything I was like well that really
wasn't cool I think he used some shock value
in there, but that's his That's his MO, and it
worked. I liked it. I also liked the interaction
between him and Kevin Hart, too. I thought that
was pretty funny as well. Anything else as far
as, Dan, the actual broadcast, not talking about
any categories or any awards, but anything outside
of that, whether it be presenters or anything
else that they do throughout the broadcast, as
far as the overall broadcast, how would you rate
it? Well, I think that some other things that
weren't. All that fantastic were the live performances,
the song performances, minus Lady Gaga. They
were all pretty forgettable, especially Sam Smith's
song, which even he came out and said, yeah,
it was pretty awful. I'm like, yeah, that entire
song is pretty bad. Especially compared to last
year when we got that Selma performance. Yeah,
last year we had a lot of good ones in Selma
and Lady Gaga last year with, I forget what she
did, with the sound of music. Oh, yeah. So that
was a really good performance. She was good this
year, too, but the other ones were just... Partially
it's because there weren't really that many great
songs. Most of those songs are from movies I'd
never even heard of so I love The Weeknd's performance.
I love that song though. Maybe I'm just partial
because The Weeknd's my boy like that's my ringtone
like Everything I liked his performance. I like
seeing him live though, so but I think it like
Dan said the only one that really stood out was
the Lady Gaga one as far as like stood out because
of the as far as being more than just somebody
singing a song Probably. Yeah, I don't know.
I thought Louis C .K. was really funny when he
did the presentation for the short documentaries
or whatever, but I don't know. Can't think of
any other ones that really stood out besides
Sasha Barry Cohen Cohen's not really algae thing
working nearly as well as he wanted it to But
when he came out I was like as soon as I was
gonna say booyaka shot. He did it. I'm like bitch
Amanda what did you think about any of the other
stuff as far as presenters or anything else that
happened kind of his little bits outside of Chris
Rock's opening? Yeah, I don't really I think
that the Louis CK one was pretty funny his little
bit But I don't I can't pick any other one out
that really stood out for me But it's been a
little bit. I think the only other thing that
I would say that was somewhat Weird and not necessary
was the minions bit Oh, I forgot all about that.
Oh, the Toy Story one was kind of cute though
because when they like fell and then the people
came up to accept their award, you could see
that they had like the actual toys were like
laying on the table there. Yeah, I can get that
and there was a purpose for that. I don't know
what the purpose of the minions being involved
at all was. To try to get the kids to watch because
of how much they love the Academy Awards, I guess.
I don't know. You had the Star Wars characters.
You had the Toy Story characters. I mean, that's
good enough for me. I don't know how many kids
are watching the Oscars. Yeah. it's yeah it's
a little it's a little strange but Alright, getting
into some of the awards. Let's get into a few
of the technical ones. We'll go over those fairly
quickly, but as far as stuff like, you know,
the editing and the visual effects, makeup and
hair styling, and costume. We'll talk about those
all at the same time, since basically the same
movie won most of those. So, Dan, what was your
thoughts as far as Mad Max running the table
with a lot of those outside of Ex Machina getting
visual effects? We had Mad Max for film editing,
Mad Max for makeup and hair styling, and for
costume design. Did you think of that? deserved
all of those or how did you feel with those categories?
I think it definitely deserved all of them because
I feel like that's one of the best aspects of
that movie. The one that I was most surprised
by was editing because honestly because usually
editing and best picture go hand in hand so you
would think the movie with the best editing would
be the best film but I think that was probably
the most telling of them all because that's an
award that it's hard you know hard to get and
hard for a movie around Mad Max to receive but
it also tells you the amount of respect that
was for that film because yeah, winning the technical
awards would make sense but there is a craftsmanship
to editing so the fact that people are willing
to vote for it in that category was I think a
good indication that people were taking it more
seriously than I thought they would. Yeah, and
if you look at that category, it is, I mean,
four out of the five nominees in Best Editing
were also nominated for Best Picture because
you have Mad Max, The Big Short, The Revenant,
and Spotlight. The only one that wasn't was Star
Wars, which also got a nomination for that. So
it definitely does have somewhat of a connection
to the Best Picture, like you were saying. And
what about the best visual effects? Because I
think everybody at that point assumed that it
was going to be Mad Max again because that came
after all these other ones. And I think anybody
that didn't think If anybody thought that there
was a chance that it wasn't going to be Mad Max,
I think they were thinking it was going to be
Star Wars then. and instead the visual effects
went to Ex Machina. Surprised on that? I was
super surprised by that because Ex Machina is
not necessarily the movie that would win best
special effects because usually the movie that
wins best special effects is the movie that has
the most special effects and I thought it would
go to Mad Max because you know when we talk about
special effects you're not just talking CGI you're
talking about everything practical explosions
that all kind of ties into it and for me, like
that all kind of ties into all the awards, a
lot of the awards that I already won. So I would
figure, oh, well, it makes sense that it would
go to Mad Max. But I think it's completely awesome
that it went to Ex Mach, you know, considering
like, you know, I have like a 15 million dollar
budget and what it was able to do with that.
And I thought it looked gorgeous. So that was
probably minus maybe best picture, the biggest
surprise for me. And I think the only thing for
visual effects that I was kind of and it's completely
biased because obviously I'm a huge Star Wars
fan, but I was hoping that there would be some
type of some type of maybe kudos for them not
going the route like they did with the prequels
and doing all CG and all that type of stuff like
some type of Hey, thanks for going back to some
of the practical effects not saying that they
necessarily did it better than anybody else But
and that was my only thought was with the Star
Wars, but I'm fine with any of those winning
for for visual effects As far as makeup and hair
styling and costume going to Mad Max, Amanda,
did you think that that was worthy or did you
think something like, there wasn't a, first of
all, there was only three nominees for best makeup
and hair styling. I don't know why there would
only be three. And I don't know, Dan, had you
ever heard of the 100 -year -old man who climbed
out the window and disappeared? No. We see a
lot of movies. We hear about a lot of movies.
We listen to a lot of podcasts about movies.
Maybe I just hadn't looked over the nominees
well enough, but when they said that on the broadcast,
I was like, how did they come up with a movie
I've never heard of? But yeah, there's only that
Mad Max and Revenant for makeup and hair styling.
Which I found was a slightly odd but costume
you do have some of the other ones Carol Cinderella
the Danish girl and the revenant Did you think
Mad Max deserve both? I was waiting for you to
let me fucking answer. Give me questions You
know, I get it there was um, I think that there
was some crazy Makeup and hair styling going
on there. Sorry. I keep yawning and I think that
I really did like, like in the Cinderella and
some of those period pieces, I loved the look
of the costumes, but with the amount of creativity
that I would have had to go into that, yeah,
I get it, definitely. Dan, in agreement on those
two being Mad Max, or did you think there was
anybody that stood a chance against them? I thought
it went to that 100 year old movie. The makeup
and hair stylings, like... That award is always
insane. It typically is only three movies for
some reason, because there aren't many movies
that use makeup that much anymore. That's the
category Bad Grandpa was nominated for, and Norbert
has been nominated for, so it's not the most
prestigious. Amanda's dying over here. We have
this You Star video game, and there's a scene
that you can do from Norbert, and me and my cousin
Ray did it, but we did it in like... Jersey accents
almost. I put it up on YouTube. It's amazing.
To me, there's no question regarding those. Production
design also went to Mad Max Fury Road. Getting
into cinematography a little bit. We had The
Revenant with Lebowski, we had Carol, The Hateful
Eight, Mad Max, and Sicario with Roger Deakins.
What was your thoughts on cinematography, Dan?
Well, I would say no matter what you think about
the Revenant I think one thing that's unquestionable
is that a cinematography Cinematography is pretty
phenomenal. I mean, I was kind of hoping Roger
Dickens would win I know he had no chance just
because the guy's been nominated like 14 15 times
So yeah, I was but I thought that was a no -brainer
that wasn't go to the Revenant considering a
I mean, what's his third year in a row that he's
won, which is insane. So But he deserved it,
I think, each time. So he's kind of killing it
right now. Yeah, and I think you can't go wrong
with the way that that was shot. I think the
movie was visually something to take in, for
sure. I don't really have too much bad to say
about The Revenant. I mean, it was in my top
30, I think, for the year. But yeah, it's hard.
You have Lewesky and Deakins. I mean, I think
those are easily the two best cinematographers.
I don't think many people would argue with that.
They're both at the top of the game, so eventually
Deakins will win something, right? I mean Leo
did. That's true. Spoiler alert. Getting into...
I don't think there's any spoilers for the Oscars
here. Getting into the musical part, we talked
about that a little bit. As far as sound editing
and sound mixing, two more awards that went to
Mad Max. At this point, Dan, were you shocked
at all at the number of awards that Mad Max was
taking home? And did at any point it make you
think that it had maybe more of a chance than
people said it did for Best Picture? Somewhat,
I think... With the sound, I thought Revenant
was gonna take it just considering the way the
movie was made. So I was a little surprised because
that's the way I had winning this. I thought
it was gonna win just for Leo's breathing in
the trailer. True. It did have a lot of breathing.
I thought the moment I thought, okay, maybe it
actually does have a chance as one -on -one for
editing, then I'm like, okay. That gives it a
shot, a bigger shot, since it is certainly...
a year that was up in the air, but I was always
hesitant because I felt like this is what was
going to happen because it reminded me of the
year, like, Avatar won, and her locker kind of
went back and forth, where Avatar got all the
technical awards, but her locker ended up winning,
like, a few of the smaller awards, and I felt
like that would end, or fewer awards, but more
of the bigger awards, and I figured that would
happen again here, and that's... kind of what
happened with a little bit of a twist ending.
Yeah, it was interesting because I think you
know obviously most of our community is tweeting
back and forth throughout the entire broadcast
and it seemed like we had the exact same thought
almost at the exact same time where I don't know
if I said it to Amanda or something that about
the same time that you sent out a tweet about
it was it's going to win all of these technical
awards so but not the big ones at the end because
it's going to be able to say well we gave you
all these other awards so it's kind of interesting
to see the thought process as people kind of
thought maybe and then some other people thought
well no this is just uh i do i do feel like they
do that sometimes where there is a movie like
the mad max or avatar or something like that
that is a technical achievement where they purposely
give it a lot of the smaller awards because it's
like okay well we'll give you recognition here
but we're obviously going to go a different direction
when it comes to the higher end awards. Right.
I think it is something that they do, unfortunately.
I don't know if it's necessarily the best way
to go about things, but they do have their certain
films that they seem like sometimes afraid to
give the best picture to. So as far as the other
musical ones, we had the original score, best
original score and best original song. Talking
about song first, since we've already kind of
mentioned it, obviously we had earned it. from
Fifty Shades of Grey. I wish I could sing, because
that would totally bust out in song. The fact
that Fifty Shades of Grey is even... Anyway.
Writings on the Wall from Spectre, we had Manta
Ray from Racing Extinction, Simple Song No. 3
from Youth, and Till It Happens to You from The
Hunting Ground. First Dan, did you see any of
these films? I have not So for did you have you
see inspector? I still have not seen it now.
Oh man. Yeah, okay I think that's the only one
on the list you need to see Well, I'm looking
for to eventually see youth but obviously the
winner here was Sam Smith with writing on the
wall giving him yet another chance to to champion
his cause which I believe he said the same speech
every time he's ever won anything but That was
a shock, was it not, Dan? Yeah, I think so, because
it's not a good song. And it wasn't a good performance
either. No. I don't know. I felt like it's one
of those things where people saw there was a
bong song nominated, so they just voted for it.
And I still have a problem with that whole category,
because as much as I diss on the Furious franchise,
I still think that song... I don't understand
how that song didn't get at least a nomination.
It was a pretty, not just popular song, but I
mean, I don't know. I don't know why it doesn't
belong at least in the company. It's not like
we had five ridiculously awesome songs get nominated.
So I thought the Wiz Khalifa and whoever that
other dude is, Charlie Puth. I thought that song
could have at least been nominated. So that would
have been my vote. Amanda, are you fine with
Sam Smith winning or do you think Lady Gaga or
somebody else should have won? I think The Weeknd
should have earned it. His performance was shit.
Like you said, when he accepted the award, of
course he's pushing his cause again. We get it,
bro. You're gay. We're cool with it. Can we move
on? Nobody cares, really. It's just another chance
for him to get on his old soapbox and preach.
something that not like we're not on board with
you guys like you know we're all good and I don't
think that um he was deserving of it he himself
said that he didn't want to perform the song
anymore he didn't like the song he didn't think
it was good I mean when it first came out I was
like yes this is okay but it didn't blow me away
Lady Gaga performance was kind of cool like I
didn't really like the song like I mean I feel
for your cause and stuff but yeah I just I really
she just It's like so over dramatic about everything
that I just can't get behind anything she's talking
about. Alright. Strong opinions there. Um, you
were tuned out for half of her performance anyway.
Cause I was like, I don't give a fuck. Alright.
Dan, we had a couple of legendary people going
at it in the best original score. I don't think
anybody ever thought that Thomas Newman, Carter
Burwell, or um, Sicario had a chance. It was
pretty much uh, Morricone against John Williams.
And any surprises as to where that goes, or were
you happy that somehow, even though he had never
won one, he finally got to win? Yeah, if the
Academy didn't vote for him for this, it would
have been a tragedy, because it's like, this
is probably going to be the last time he's ever
nominated it, or even does a score. So they're
kind of a situation where they can write it wrong.
So even if it necessarily wasn't the best score
of the year, I think it's more important that
he ends up walking away with it. Because I personally
am not against the idea of... Career awards at
times if there's no other clear if it's not robbing
someone and I don't necessarily think there's
a score nominated that was so much better than
Heathly which is a score I really liked so I
It made sense to me because it's like this guy's
a legend and he should have he's already won
a lifetime achievement award It's like a time
that he wins an award for a score that you know,
even if it is using familiar sounds and similar
to his past I think it's fine because You know,
like I said, this guy should have won awards
a long time ago. And unfortunately, it was back
then. Western's got really no respect when it
came to the Oscars. So he was overlooked unfairly.
And I don't think... Even if it was a sentimental,
I don't think it is. I think it's still also
deserving. But I'd much rather them go with more
of the sentimental pick here than later on in
the best supporting actor category. So I like
this. And I don't think, you know, I don't think
someone like John Williams is going to feel like
he got robbed of anything. He's only got like
18 Oscars. So he's fine. He likes the guy. They
were sitting next to each other. I think. I don't
know. It was all good. It is kind of funny, though,
because I have people realize that he didn't
win an Oscar for the Star Wars. Score that's
the same year that he was nominated for Close
encounters, which actually might be a better
score Yeah, so but yeah, he's nominated so many
times over the course of his life that he's even
beat himself But yeah, I think most people were
happy with that and I thought he gave a good
little speech there too through the translator
so yeah as far as getting into The best animated
short film, best live action short film. Dan,
had you seen any of those or did you know about
any of the nominees in that? I know these are
categories that a lot of times most of the audience
don't know much about. No, the only one I saw
was World of Tomorrow because it's on Netflix,
so I knew nothing. I was guessing like everyone
else. Okay, yeah. So Bear Story, obviously the
best animated short and best live action short,
Stutter. I don't know if you saw best animated
short film. There was a Wikipedia... edit immediately
on the Bear Story page. And I don't know if it
was just somebody that didn't like somebody involved
in that, or if it was a disgruntled loser in
that category, but it immediately put, like,
Bear Story, you know, winner of the best animated
short film, blah, blah, blah, blah, at the Oscars,
and then it said, like, even though this film
is utter crap. It just went on to rip it for,
like, three sentences. I don't know how long
it stayed up on Wikipedia, but there was someone
that took a screenshot immediately, and I thought
that was kind of comical. How dare you win Best
Animated Short Film? Oh, that's gonna ruin the...
Man, that's insane. Because ask anyone to name
another movie that's won Best Animated Short
Film like from last year. No one's gonna do it,
but this guy had to take it down a peg. And I
think a lot of people are the same way with the
best documentary short. All the different shorts
I don't think are known by... great deal of the
audience, but I know you are familiar a lot of
times with quite a few of the documentaries.
How many of these had you seen, or was it just
Amy? I saw all of them, I seen all of them except
for... the the silence the book of silence which
just came on netflix so hopefully we're seeing
it soon i just kind of seen what happened miss
simone in winter on fire yeah those are both
on netflix as well so i did so i know i know
we'll get into one of the the films that you
saw a little bit later but out of all of those
listed did you agree with amy winning or did
you feel stronger about one of the other nominees
i'm okay with amy winning i think it is a good
film i think i Like, I thought Cartel Land was
better. Though, honestly, the director of Amy
also did Senna, which I thought was actually
much better than Amy. But I think it was still
well done. From what I'm hearing from the look
of silence, it sounds like that's probably the
one that should have won. But I get why Amy won,
which is kind of usually the academy when it
comes to documentaries, it often votes on the
cause, not the movie. So I didn't... I was surprised
with something like, you know, Once You're On
Fire or The Look at Silence or Cartel Land didn't
take it. But sometimes also they tend to go with
movies that's about a celebrity. So that's probably
why Amy won. For sure. I don't think there was
anybody surprised at best foreign language film,
even people that hadn't seen any of them. I think
we're still predicting Son of Saul would win
that just because of the word of mouth and the
buzz that that one had. Any surprise for me there?
No, when in doubt, go with the Holocaust movie.
There we go, son of Saul. That's the Holocaust
pick for this year. Getting into something that
Amanda can talk about here, now that we're through
all the shorts and the documentaries, as far
as best animated feature, obviously we had Anomalisa,
Boy in the World, When Marnie Was There, Shaun
the Sheep, and Inside Out. Were you happy that
Inside Out won? Yeah, I think it was pretty well
deserved. I think that was a great flick, a lot
behind it, a lot of... I don't want to say science,
but psychology and stuff put into it, and I think
that the look of it was awesome. It was a really
original idea, I think. Maybe I'm wrong about
that, but I think it was pretty original. Definitely
not when Marnie was there, that piece of shit
movie. I didn't get that weirdness. not even
cared to see Shaun the Sheep. I tried to talk
you into it the other day, but it didn't work.
I think he just thinks if there's an animated
movie, oh my god, Amanda will watch this. No.
I'm interested in Shaun the Sheep. I want to
see that one. And we haven't seen Anomalisa,
so we can't. I think that was the strongest competitor.
I think most people thought it was Inside Out
or Anomalisa. We haven't seen that one, to be
fair. Dan, a lot of people, especially people
that we kind of stay in communication with in
the different movie podcast circles, had Inside
Out as the number one film of the year. So were
you happy that... that took away this award?
Yeah, but I should be honest, I've only seen
Inside Out out of all the ones that were nominated,
so I really can't say. Gotcha. But I loved Inside
Out. I thought it was great and deserving of
it. So I can't. Right. Alright, as far as original
screenplay and adapted screenplay. Original screenplay
going to Spotlight and adapted screenplay going
to the Big Short. I know you haven't seen the
Big Short yet, Dan, but I believe you've caught
up with most of the other ones in both categories
outside of maybe... I don't know if you've seen
carol or brooklyn yet I guess but any surprises
as far as the dancer screenplay original screenplay
or what were your Reactions to those two or did
you feel like either one of them was given a
hint as to maybe a possible best picture? No,
I figured These ones seem kind of straightforward.
I felt the ones that were gonna win did win I
thought honestly it was gonna spotlight. This
would be the one Academy Award It won for the
night and the same thing with a big short. So
since there are two movies, I think that are
from what I know from watching Spotlight and
from what I hear with the big shorts that are
very dependent upon their writing. So I mean,
yeah, I think they're both deserving. I could
see some people saying maybe Es Machina for best
original screenplay, but I thought Spotlight,
very much its screenplay was a huge reason it
was as successful as it was. So I think it was
deserving of that. And like you said, I have
not seen The Big Short. I've seen all the other
ones except, well, no, I haven't seen Carol either.
But personally, I love The Martian. But like
I said, I can't really speak on it. Right. But
you could speak on the fact that, did you ever
think you'd see the day that Adam McKay had an
Oscar? Not necessarily, no. No. Never watched
Anchorman thought okay, this guy's gonna make
Oscar winning movie about the financial crisis
That's awesome. All right, let's get into the
the main I guess quote -unquote the big seller
the big headline awards for the Oscars for best
supporting actress Amanda we obviously had Jennifer
Jason Lee in the hateful eight Rooney Mara from
Carol which we haven't seen Rachel McAdams spotlight
Kate Winslet Steve Jobs and the winner Alicia
Vikander from the Danish girl slash ex Machina
What did you think about? Best supporting actress
today go to the deserving the right person even
if it might not have been the right movie Not
having seen the Danish girl yet um you know i'm
really not sure so uh i know that lisha vikander
is kind of the powerhouse i mean she's in um
578 movies last year she's gonna be in like 832
this year so i mean she's got to have some kind
of chops to um you know to be recognized and
um I think that The Danish Girl is probably a
pretty powerful movie, too, in itself. To be
fair, yeah, obviously we haven't seen that, so
I shouldn't be dissonant. I was just going more
so on the reaction of the Twitter world when
that happened, because everybody was saying,
we'll just pretend that that was for Ex Machina
instead. What were the other nominees? Jennifer
Jason Lee for Hateful Eight, Rooney Mara from
Carol, Rachel McAdams from Spotlight, and Kate
Winslet from Steve Jobs. I like Jennifer Jason
Lee. I didn't think she had a chance to necessarily
win. I did like that performance a lot. I like
that clip when she's like... I think a lot of
people thought it might go to Rooney Mara. Dan,
what did you think of the supporting actress?
Yeah, I thought there was a shot it could go
to Rooney Mara because sometimes she's almost
like a co -lead less of a supporting role. So
sometimes the supporting actor goes to the person
who's had the biggest part. But I had a wish
of Mike Andrews because he was winning mostly
everything up to that point. Again, you know,
she's I mean, I like I think a lot of people
made the comparison to Jennifer Lawrence for
someone who kind of comes out of nowhere and
becomes Oscar nominated and Oscar Oscar winning
actress. And now she's everywhere. And I could
definitely see that happening with her now, since
I never heard of her until this year. And now
she's an Oscar winning actress. And which is
cool. I mean, she's a great woman. We've seen
she's been fantastic, but it was a very she's
also the only person that's gonna give Michael
Fassbender run for his money as far as number
of movies appearing in 2016 It's and I was surprised
that Rachel McAdams was nominated for spotlight
enough because she wasn't deserving But it's
not necessarily the type of performance that
doesn't get recognized, but it was a really close
race I think with all those it was there was
I don't think a clear favorite even after the
winner was announced Yeah. And Best Supporting
Actor supplied at least some people one of their
bigger shocking moments of the telecast. I think
a lot of people figured Sylvester Stallone was
going to come away with this one for his role
in Creed. But honestly, I really like Tom Hardy
in The Revenant. I really like Mark Ruffalo a
ton in Spotlight. Not huge on Christian Bale
in the big short. I mean, I think he was good,
but I don't think he necessarily compared to
what some of these other people were. providing,
and the winner obviously was going to Mark Rylance
for Bridge of Spies. Dan, were you shocked that
it went that way? I know a lot of people were
saying it should go to Mark Rylance, but it's
probably gonna go to Sylvester Stallone. I was
holding out, even that it might be a surprise
and Tom Hardy or Mark Ruffalo could come on with
it. But what do you think of that one? Well,
I know the big thing for this was people were
talking about they wanted Sylvester Stallone
win because of Creed for his performance as Rocky,
and I kind of understand where that's coming
from, but... I also have no issue with Mark Rylance
winning this. I don't necessarily think that
Stallone's performance was all that phenomenal.
I thought he was good. If he won, I wouldn't
mind, but I don't think he's getting robbed the
way people are saying he's getting robbed. And
I don't think if he was giving that same performance
and was in a different movie where he wasn't
playing Rocky, he would even be nominated. So
I think people kind of just wanted him to win
just because of... his performance for Rocky
and I don't necessarily think it, I don't know,
I don't think it's as big of a shock as people
made it out to be. And I think that some people
were saying that Mark Rylance didn't deserve
it because he wasn't in the film enough. I don't
know if I necessarily subscribe to that theory.
I could see, like I said personally, I probably
would have picked between Tom Hardy and Mark
Ruffalo just because I... really enjoyed their
performances on a different level, but I had
no problem with Mark Rylance winning. Amanda,
did you have a favorite out of those? Christian
Bale and Big Short, Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies,
you saw Tom Hardy and the Revenant, and you saw
all these, Mark Ruffalo and Spotlight and Spencer
Stallone and Creed. I probably would have gone
with Mark Ruffalo. I know that was the time where
we were in the theater and we were looking at
each other like, this is award worthy. Yeah,
I was just so blown away with his performance
there that I mean, not to take away from the
other performances, but I think that one stood
out the most for me. I don't think I was ever
watching these other movies and go, oh man, this
performance is fucking amazing. But I did, you
know, verbalize that while watching the movie,
just kind of blown away with how amazing Mark
Ruffalo was. I was kind of shocked that Bridget
Spies, dude... Got it. I was for sure that Stallone
was going to get it, actually. I wasn't behind
that. I'm a little sad that he didn't get it,
but I felt like, you know, bro, Rocky, you're
back. You did it. But I think that performances
-wise, Mark Ruffalo was more deserving. It's
all right, though. Don't feel too bad for Mr.
Stallone. He already had Arnold Schwarzenegger
immediately. consoling him for his loss. Are
you serious? No, I didn't check the list. Oh,
I thought, I totally fucking believed that. No,
it did happen. He, like, he said that you're
really, I forget what it was, but it was something,
you know, saying he should have won. But truth
is, Rocky won Best Picture in 76 when it didn't
deserve to, so he's done. So yeah, he's got probably
more awards than he deserved to for that franchise
already. All right, so best actor, best actress.
I think maybe, Dan, would you say that these
were the two most predictable categories of the
night? Oh, I would say yes. Maybe besides best
animated feature, they're pretty. Yeah. Of course,
I don't think Matt Damon or Bryan Cranston or
Eden. Michael Fassbender thought they had much
of a chance. Eddie Redmayne knew he was disqualified
for also appearing in Jupiter Ascending in the
same year. So it was pretty, pretty much shoe
-in that Leonardo was gonna finally get his win,
and I think it was deserving for this performance
in that film. I don't think there's any way you
can really gripe too much about it. As far as
the best actress, I mean, Cate Blanchett and
Carol got a lot of buzz. I didn't see that. I
really did like Sir Sheronan in Brooklyn, but
I think it was pretty much of a lock for Brie
Larson in The Room. Amanda, were you surprised
at either one of those? No, I was pretty sure
that Brie Larson was going to take it. I really
did like some of the other performances, but
The Room was such a powerful movie that I don't
think there's any way that you could ignore her
performance in that. Right. Alright, so like
I said not too much of a surprise there for DiCaprio
and Larson winning there. Only two categories
left. The first one would be best director where
we had in a retweet for the irrevenant take home
the trophy Adam McKay for Big Short, George Miller,
Mad Max, Lenny Abramson from Room and Tom McCarthy
for spotlight. I guess my only thought with best
director is I for some reason had like I don't
know if it's again more of a biased vote or more
of a sentimental Desire, but I was really pulling
for George Miller in this one just because I
thought it would be cool Even though Mad Max
had won like a billion wards already I think
he is the orchestrator of that entire success
and like without him none of those other things
are pulled off the way that they do he was kind
of more of a visionary i guess in my mind so
i was kind of hoping that george miller would
win for mad max fury road but not surprised at
all that uh mr inaritu wins for the revenant
amanda what did you think of the director category
i know you're not as into um the director aspect
of it uh i really just don't Fucking like and
erase you. I just I really don't know not much
to say about okay What were the other? Big sure
Adam McKay for Big Short George Miller for Mad
Max the guy from the room Lenny Abrams and then
Tom McCarthy from Spotlight Yeah, I'm not really
sure why he got it for the remnant. I think that
it was itself a pretty well put together film
But I wasn't completely fucking blown away by
it I mean, I could see him. I think he's on par
with any of those other guys for some reason
I think like I said, I just think George Miller
as far as the being coming up with a vision for
Mad Max and then orchestrating everything that
went into it, you know from the costumes and
the effects and all the stuff that did win awards
to the actors performances and stuff like that
and kind of just the whole vision. That's the
only reason I would maybe give him a slight edge,
but I don't think there's much distinguishing
in Ritu as far as I don't think he's any less
deserving than any of those other guys nominated.
Dan, how did you feel about the Best Director?
I also wanted to see where I was hoping that
it would go to George Miller for Mad Max. I felt,
you know, it would be like a consolation prize
for not winning Best Picture, but winning Best
Director. Right. So, but my prediction was it
would be The Revenant, and I don't necessarily
have an issue with it. Was it the best directed
film? I'm not sure. I don't know about that.
That's questionable. I think a lot of it of what
made That movie green mean not necessarily be
instruction. I actually think like Spotlight
is movie that Super Bowl it ends up getting it
another award But it's a movie and people were
having issue with it because it's like that movie
was best or got nominated for best director When
it didn't really even seem like it had one, but
I think sometimes people overlook the fact that
usually a directors Job first and foremost is
like establishing tone in an acting style with
his team And I think no one did that better than
Tom McCarthy this year, but yeah, I like they're
so again Rachel McAdams a nomination. Yeah Like
those those movies are something so there's mmm
I don't know they're so close to one another
that in which we kind of saw that I don't have
an issue with any with him winning but I was
hoping for Mad Max to pull it out because just
the insane, what he did for that movie is just
insane. And I think he could make the argument
too for a couple of these other ones. I think
he could say Adam McKay from one standpoint because
he made something that should not. work at all
as a film like I said talking about the you know
financial crisis and all the jargon that nobody
understands and all the different things and
he somehow made that into something that resonated
at least with a lot of people so I think you
could you know cite him for that like you said
Tom McCarthy with the ensemble that he had and
kind of how he orchestrated that I mean Lenny
Abrahamson using people that for a lot of a lot
of people didn't know much about you know I mean
I know Brie Larson had done things and for people
that you know cinephiles know her but you know
even the little you know Jacob Tranville and
stuff like that dealing with something that didn't
have a lot behind it like it could have you know
it is like the little indie darling I guess you
could say where it just kind of swept and swept
the the minds and hearts, I guess, of snow files
over the course of the years, so that had it
going for it. We already talked about George
Miller. I think, I guess the argument against
it in a read -through for me would be you had
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, and you had
Lubezki as your cinematographer, and... So how
much of it was you and how much of it was those
three phenomenal talents that were really making
the movie what it was. So I don't know. It's
hard to say where that line is and who has more
of an effect on that type of stuff. I mean, obviously
he is directing those actors and etc. Working
together with the cinematographer. So it's kind
of a hard category sometimes to kind of, once
you're dealing with a bunch of great directors
or great performances and directing, where do
you split the hairs, I guess? It's hard to say.
And to be fair, part of being a good director
is also hiring good talent. That's the hard thing
when it comes to direction. Direction is different
for different directors in the sense that what
makes one director great is completely different
than another one. Acting, you know acting. It's
something you can see, you can quantify, but
when it comes to direction, it's a lot more obtuse
in what makes a great director. So that's where
it kind of gets hard with this stuff, where it
becomes harder to dictate who should win it and
who shouldn't. Yeah, like you said, it's not
like best original song. You're judging five
songs. Or you know costume you're just you know
It's a much easier like you said to quantify
it as far as the main award of the night and
the final award was best picture of course more
than the Five nominees, but still not ten this
year, but we had spotlight the big short bridge
of spies Brooklyn Mad Max the Martian the revenant
and room and in somewhat of a shocking fashion
Dan because it didn't win Hardly any other awards.
We actually see spotlight take over here This
was the first time I think I don't know in a
decade over a decade that I was actually surprised
by Who won Best Picture like I kind of checked
out? I'm like, okay the revenue is gonna win
Best Picture and it's gonna be near you two up
there again talking and what So I checked out
because I thought the last three awards were
going to the revenue I was like, okay, we're
onto the revenue says, you know section of the
broadcast I can stop watching now because I already
know what they're gonna say Leonardo's gonna
win and reach is gonna win and when he said spotlight
I'm like I legitimately yelled and like, holy
crap, I forget. I was like, really? Spotlight?
And I was pulling for Spotlight, which I caught
up with before the Oscars and I was trying to
catch up with more, but. I was shocked, but I
don't know if you... I read up on how the voting
goes for Best Picture, which is different than
the other categories. In the other categories,
you just pick a winner, but with Best Picture,
you rank the films. And it makes sense that Spotlight
wins in that, because there's a good chance Spotlight
won, and no one ranked it number one. Yeah, it
was everybody's number two or something. Yeah.
And where you have movies like Revenant and Mad
Max, where I could see some of the Academy hating
Mad Max, and some loving Revenant, so you probably
had those. on either end, so it would be like
Spotlight, which had more universal success probably.
That's what ended up winning. You would think
in a voting process like that, you probably would
have had the top three, I would guess, would
have been Spotlight, The Martian, and Bridge
of Spies. Because they're not, you know what
I mean, they're not going to have those big opposition
to them. That's going to be more universal. Even
something like Brooklyn would have done well
on something like that. I can see The Revenant,
Big Short, and Mad Max having some detractors.
I kind of wish they released like those final
tallies just to see how close it was. Well, they
can't even release the names of people. That's
true. That's true. So I was very happy it won.
My only worry now, though, with it winning is
that it goes from this movie that was like this
little movie that could that was overlooked to
now it being overrated because it won Best Picture.
Like how one award can change that. And I could
see a lot of people watching the spotlight and
thinking, like, I don't see what's so great about
it because it's not a movie that's necessarily.
all that flashy and it's necessarily one that's
gonna be like I don't know it's not what people
may think of when they think of Oscar which is
why I'm surprised at one begin with so I think
it might actually have a negative impact on the
overall outlook of that movie which the Oscars
tend to do at times where a movie that like it's
just this little gem gets nominated for an Oscar
like Philomena and now everyone hates it because
it was nominated for when it didn't really deserve
to be so there's kind of that negative connotation
that comes so we'll see what happens But overall,
I was very happy that it won. Amanda, what did
you think about Spotlight coming home with the
victory there? I'm super glad about it. I think
it was really well deserving and a little shocked
based on all the hype everything else was getting.
Well, I was more so shocked because you had Mad
Max winning a billion awards. So you kind of
thought, well, maybe that's going to take a...
And then you had the expectation that The Revenant
had won some other, you know, and the other different
award shows had won stuff, plus it was getting
director, best actor, so you thought, you know,
maybe one of those two. And Spotlight seemed
like it had been not even hardly mentioned the
whole day. So I can kind of see how that was
a little shocking for some people. Sorry, I didn't
mean to cut you off. Yeah, I think it was definitely
flying under the radar there a little bit, but...
I was gunning for it. I think for me I was like,
eh, is it gonna be The Room? Is it gonna be Spotlight?
Those are the most powerful films that I saw
that were, you know, kind of worthy of being
in the mix there. And I'm glad that it was the
victor. Alright, so we beat this to death, Dan,
as far as going over all the categories and all
of our reactions to the Oscars. Overall... Based
on the whole kit and caboodle, the host, the
vignettes, the skits, the awards, the winners,
the speeches, etc. What was your overall takeaway?
If you were to rank this Oscar ceremony, did
you think it was better than some more recent
ones or where would you sit overall? I think
it's one of the best in a long time because overall
just the presentation from Chris Rock to the
fact that there were surprises, the fact that
there were some... you know, upsets that I was
happy with and you were actually kind of wondering
what would happen where a lot of the years passed,
it was kind of already obvious what was going
to win. So I think this is, I don't know, one
of the best in a long time. I will say the only
thing that disappointed me is I thought they
had the best idea ever when they were saying
that they were just gonna put all the names on
the little scrolling thank you bar. I was like,
finally we can stop having people thank people
that nobody else knows and thanking their family
and thanking people that had no effect whatsoever
on anything. I'm like, just get all that unimportant
boring nonsense on the scroll that's cool and
then maybe we'll actually get some decent, like,
speeches or some more meaningful talks. I was
like, that's a great idea. Unfortunately, I don't
think anybody actually knew that that was happening
because they all still, for the most part, thanked
everybody outside of a couple people. I mean,
I thought there was a couple good speeches that
that actually spent some time talking about something
that seemed important or that at least was heartfelt.
But what did you think of the whole idea to scroll
those names and Did they need, is it gonna be
something that no matter what they do, it's just
the standard of everybody seeing everybody do
that for decades, so they're gonna just continue
to thank everybody they know? I think it's, yeah,
I think it's just kind of a habit to thank those
people, because even if you don't put them there,
and I honestly missed that. I wasn't even paying
attention to this girl on the bottom. I just,
I don't know, just watching things, just ignoring
that by habit. Yeah. So. Because on ESPN, you
see the same things tick past you three thousand
times a minute. So. I don't know, and I thought
they were, when it came to the speeches, very
quick to play people off. I know they were trying
to keep it tight, but like, there were times
where I was like, okay, maybe just let that person
talk a little bit, because it was like the one
regarding, I think it was a one -to -one best
short documentary, and she was speaking about
something rather serious, and suddenly you have
this music playing behind her, and I thought
it was like, okay, you know what, maybe we can
cut that skit where you sell cookies, just to
let this person talk for a little bit, but you
know. I mean, I know you're not a huge award
ceremony person, but overall, what did you think
of the Oscar ceremony? Or what did you just think
of the movies that came across as the winners,
seeing so many movies this year? I'm probably
not the best person to ask that just because
I'm kind of like, oh, award ceremonies. And I
don't always agree with it and get a little frustrated.
Probably not as much as you guys do. Did you
think, though, from the perspective of, you know,
in the past, I know a lot of people that watch
these award ceremonies, they're like, they come
out and... The general audience is like well,
I've only seen two of these films I've only seen
three of these films like this year Maybe more
than most you'd seen almost everything that was
talked about outside of a few that we missed
like the Danish Girl and Carol So did you at
least feel like you had a better? Were more in
touch with what was going on? Yeah, definitely
I think that I I had more of a knowledge base
to go in this are going into this and you know
Normally, I'm just like oh, what did they wear?
But this time, I'm a little sad I missed most
of the red carpet stuff, so I didn't get to see
all the outfits, which is kind of like my favorite
part, to be honest. So I missed my favorite part.
That was a great little bit, too, about who was
that Chris Rock to when he was talking about
the guys wear the same thing. Yeah, but Kevin
Hart had a sparkly ass fucking tux. Yeah, normally
that's my favorite part. I didn't really get
to see that, but I wasn't as bummed because at
least I I knew what the hell they were talking
about and I felt like super knowledgeable about
these movies and having opinions on them and
not going to be like, well I didn't see that,
I didn't see that, I didn't see that. And then
just hoping that the one that I actually fucking
saw won. So yeah, it was a little different.
Alright, well that does it for our Oscar talk.
We'll real quickly get into some movies that
we've been watching over the last week or so.
And Dan, since we were just talking about Oscars,
let's get a little bit more of your thoughts
and opinions on Spotlight, the last of the films
I think that you caught up with before the broadcast.
So, you know, you'd heard people talk about it.
Obviously, both Amanda and I had it listed in
our top films of the year list. Did it live up
to all the hype? And what did you think as you
finally got to see that one? So yeah, I was very
much looking forward to this. Because for whatever
reason, I am a big fan of movies that's around
journalism, that's around news for some reason.
I don't know why. I don't necessarily tend to
watch the news a lot, but I love movies that
are about them, like Network or Broadcast News
or All the President's Men. And I think I've
heard a lot of comparisons to this and All the
President's Men, which makes a lot of sense.
I think there is that, but where All the Prince...
Presence been a little bit more suspenseful in
a way. This is certainly more You know emotionally
resonant in what it's going after and yeah, I
ended up really loving it It was it hits my sensibilities.
It's like a type of movie that I very much love
I thought the performances overall were all fantastic
and very much Painted the picture it needed to
win where everyone felt real and how it kind
of attacked the idea of morality and the overall
picture and how you try to find it in this craziness
that occurred and how no one was really led unscathed
in the fact that it kind of looked at the responsibilities
that was lacking in not only the church but the
newspaper itself and how it kind of dropped the
ball past and just how it looked at how institutions
can really almost in a way we take for granted
in the sense of how much power they have and
how they can, what they can get away with. But
yeah, it was devastating in a lot of ways. And
I loved a lot of the little touches that were
done by McCarthy. Like, for example, there's
a scene where you see Rachel McAdams, which he
saw in, if you saw the Oscars, it was a scene
that they showed where she was interviewing a
priest who was kind of basically freewheeling,
giving over the fact that he molested the children.
And then after that conversation, you pull back
and you see that you know, just in the distance,
there's a school there and just kind of just
like the the realization. So maybe we say that's
a little heavy handed, but I thought it was it
just did it enough to make it work and make you
understand what was going on. And it raised all
these these questions like what you do when you
have this information and you're you know, you
should you release it immediately, but to do.
Go for the bigger story. So there's a lot of
like questions that like really tough questions
that had no easy answers that went into so yeah,
I Loved it and I thought it was deserving of
best picture I don't know if it's necessarily
I would put it at my top film of the year But
it's certainly my top five right now I still
think for whatever reason I love The Martian
and I rewatched that recently again too and liked
it even more the second time. So But it's yeah,
it's excellent film. So A couple questions for
you. Was the end ruined for you prior to seeing
that, or were you as floored as everybody else
when you got to the credit scenes? Or the text
before the credit scenes? I heard about that
beforehand, but still seeing it, it was just
like, holy crap, because I thought it was going
to be names, and then finding out it was actually
what it was. I'm like, that's just insane. And
just because... Then also seeing like that's
where I used to live so that And you can picture
too if you'd seen that one in the theater how
like the exit of the theater is just like a Nobody's
talking. Yeah. Yeah, you're just leaving it in
silence. Now. I had a couple other questions
about the film, too obviously You heard a man
and I rant and rave about Mark Ruffalo. A lot
of people that we heard, you know, in the different
reviews of the movie when it came out had different
favorites. You know, a lot of people really liked
this performance, really liked that performance.
Did you have one that stood out or did you think
it was a pretty balanced ensemble overall or?
It was pretty balanced. I was like the one that
I don't know if it was the best one that kind
of stood out to me. It was the most surprised
by was Lee Shriver. Just because I don't know,
like he would he did not feel like him. Like
I feel like he. It was so subdued like I didn't
think he could give a performance like that Uh
that that I was suspecting but I thought overall
I mean mark ruffalo certainly I think had the
moment the oscar moments that that movie had
where he gives that speech But I also love what
happens after that speech and how it's almost
in vain um, but I don't know. They're all really
fantastic, but I don't know for my Favorite it
might have been michael keaton. Uh, just because
of like how he had To play all the different
cards and how he was trying like he was the one
that really had to figure out how exactly they
were gonna kind of get this accomplished the
way they did so but I also really appreciated
the the subtlety of the film and how it didn't
try to be flashy and also the the genuine or
the I guess I don't know what the best word,
the authenticity of the film that it didn't ignore
and skip over other major events that were happening.
I thought the way that they handled the twin
towers aspect was pretty phenomenal and seemed
just like a natural progression of what was going
on. Yeah, it reminded me of Zero Dark Thirty
and the way that both of those movies surrounded
gigantic, huge events in the fat end, but didn't
necessarily... Go about them the way you would
expect where they kind of just let the moment
itself like they didn't feel like the need to
Kind of Expand upon the importance of that moment
didn't then was already there They just kind
of presented it to you and almost like a matter
-of -fact way because they realized that they
really didn't have to do more than Show you what
it was like and I think that was a smart thing
to do and I think it It could cost some people
to think you know want more from it. But for
me, I thought it was a good approach because
it Considering the topic and it made it made
it made it a movie without heroes, even though
people were Doing something that was quote -unquote
heroic, but you kind of saw that there was there
was no winning in this it was just just kind
of it was almost just a Realization of our failure
and I think that was kind of what really stuck
out to me So I'm guessing you're somewhere in
the eight nine range on this one. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah probably leaning more towards nine so Alright,
excellent. I'm glad you enjoyed that one. I was
hoping that the hype didn't overdo it for you.
That you get to hear everybody say how good it
is and then somehow not meet that. So I'm definitely
happy you enjoyed that one. Amanda had a first
time watch. It was a re -watch for me. But Amanda,
why don't you tell us what your reactions and
thoughts on the usual suspects was? and explain
why you haven't seen this film up to this point.
I actually think that I've seen the ending to
this on TV by accident, because I remember seeing
that scene. I just didn't know what part of the
movie that was or what movie that was connected
to. But I'm not really sure. I think it took
me a really long time to see Reservoir Dogs 2,
and I'm not really sure about that one either.
I think that was just kind of in the same category.
What was that look for? Nothing, keep going.
But yeah, I'm not really sure. It's just something
that kind of flew under my radar. Like I was
aware of it, but I just never got a chance to
check it out. Okay, so now you saw it and what
was your reaction? I really liked it. I thought
it was cool. I didn't really see the twist coming
until the very end and I was like, oh shit. I
think there was some pretty cool stuff. going
on as far as like the schemes and the game plans
go and the bald one i didn't think he was that
bad really let's talk about who you really want
to talk about the benis yeah oh my god when i
first saw him um the reason why we have like
a whole lineup of movies and we're like oh which
one do we want to do i'm like this one because
it's got benicio notoro in it and we watched
it and um if i hadn't known that he was in this
movie i would not have known that was him. At
first I didn't know it was him. At first you
wouldn't have known it was him. No, but then
I got like a certain, like, angle of his face
and I was like, oh fuck, that's Museo del Toro
right there. And his voice, the way he was speaking,
like, I was like, yeah, this guy's fucking awesome.
But he kind of went out like a bitch, dude. I
don't think he was... I wish he would have been
there for, you know, a little bit more, but...
They didn't know what they were working with
at that point. They didn't know they had... And
I thought it was really cool seeing him so young
I I don't know what happened like when was this
movie made because it doesn't seem like It was
that long ago like Kevin Spacey looks the exact
same fucking thing. Okay. Spacey's never not
Yeah, he looks so incredibly young and still
a really super cool performance Kevin Spacey
Did a super awesome guy with CP or a fake CP
That last scene when he's walking and eventually
just goes into the regular walk spoiler, but
yeah, I've seen that some somewhere I've seen
that but yeah, it was a good ride. I liked it
I'd give it probably a seven and a half seven
and a half out of ten for usual suspects. All
right Yeah, I have not seen this film in a while,
and I forgot how young Benicio Del Toro is in
this film. So that definitely was interesting.
And it just is so weird, the collection of people
that they got for this film. Like, you would
have never put that ensemble together, I don't
think. And, I don't know, it was just like, it
was a crazy, and I think it all worked very well
together. Yes, even Baldwin. I'm glad that we
had the subtitles on, because I would have not
been able to understand what the hell you're
saying. Alright Dan, what's another one that
you saw? I caught up with Amy like we mentioned
we talked about earlier the documentary that's
currently on Amazon right now and it's from the
documentarian that did Senna and like Senna it's
all done through archival footage and I'll be
honest I was never a huge Amy Winehouse fan.
I never didn't dislike her or like her I just
didn't really know much about her besides what
you heard about with her troubles with drugs
and things like that and I think if you you've
never enjoyed music and know nothing about it
this actually works really well because it kind
of gives you an idea of just who she was as a
person and it reminds me of the soaked in bleach
documentary about Kurt Cobain because you have
two people who are immensely talented but they're
just not built for fame and just the damage that
like they were just not ready for the fame that
came their way they were never really something
they saw after and seeing how they caused them
to recoil and it also makes you kind of feel
bad because you see certain scenes where you
know there are all those jokes that were happening
at her expense and then you see like how she
was at that time and you realize that i don't
know it kind of makes you reevaluate the way
we treat people who are in her situation and
I think a very important documentary in that
sense as it kind of gives you this idea of what
could drive someone to be that way and how it's
rather a tragic story in that end. So I think
it's excellent. Like I said, I think Zen is a
little bit better just because I feel like there's,
I thought that there's more to it in that sense.
Cassetta is kind of an insane story in itself,
but I would highly recommend it. And like I said,
it's streaming now on Amazon, so you can watch
it for free if you're a Prime member, so. Awesome.
All right. We'll go through two of them real
quick because we don't need to talk about them
too much, but we caught up on Big Eyes, the Tim
Burton film from a year ago, and I gotta say
that I actually enjoyed this film quite a bit.
I don't think it's a perfect film. I think there
are some problems with it, but it's crazy how...
I mean, it's based on a true story, real events,
real people, and the fact that this stuff happened
the way it happened, and some of the stuff that
it depicts, especially like in the court scene
towards the end, the fact that it actually happened
is mind -boggling, and I just wish I could...
see more about what was going on in this dude's
head and how he thought he was going to get away
with this and how he's stuck with this lie all
the way until his deathbed and still stuck with
it never never admitted that he wasn't the person
behind those paintings and it's just a crazy
story I mean like I said there are some problems
with the from a filmmaking standpoint I think
they sometimes go a little bit too over the top
but again they're dealing with crazy people in
real life so I guess that's kind of a part of
what was going on but I actually enjoyed big
eyes I probably give this one like a six right
around six six and a half somewhere in there
Amanda what did you think as far as big eyes
are a great and quick thoughts on it I would
probably give it like a four and a half or I
really wasn't crazy about it I accidentally watched
like two Tim Burton films in one day that was
having to be the second one and I could definitely
see little touches here and there you know Tim
Burton brushstrokes and of course Danny Elfman
did the music as per the uge but um even it being
like a true story i was just like fuck this guy
like i love Christoph Waltz and uh i just this
movie made me fucking hate him and i i don't
know i just i couldn't understand her motivation
like why would you just stick up for yourself
could be an idiot i just couldn't get behind
it so yeah okay Alright and the last or not the
last one but the other one we can go through
real quick because I don't want to go into it
too much. We don't want to go down that rabbit
hole but we did see Risen in theater as far as
new release for 2016. I was anticipating this
one and I knew I was anticipating it much more
than I should. It did fall a little bit flat
for me. I mean I like Kevin Reynolds as a director
and I think Joseph Fiennes was absolutely excellent
as far as his role goes. I thought he actually
gave a good performance but Was hoping that this
was gonna be a little bit more than it was so
Just a quick grade for me for risen. I would
give this one a five out of ten I know Amanda
you're gonna be much lower than this, but what
did you feel? Yeah, I'll give it like a three
I was bored. I wanted to see some more cool stuff
happen like miracles and shit, and I think when
the miracles I did happen like tagline risen
miracles Even when the miracles did happen, people's
reactions, I would have been losing my shit if
I would have seen some of this stuff. And they
were just like, the one guy seemed like Jesus'
hype man. I don't even like... Some of the performances
were not very good. No, and fucking Draco Malfoy
and his big ass dome and puppy eyes. His real
name's not Draco Malfoy though. He tells me that
every time I say that. I don't care. I know what
his name is. It's Draco Malfoy. But I like Joseph
Fiennes. He's pretty cool. I'm actually watching
him in Camelot, the TV show right now, and he's
way better as Merlin than he was as this guy.
I think his performance is okay, but I just think
it was kind of weak overall. I think they handled
some things fairly well, but yeah, I think some
of it fell a little bit flat overall. They didn't
dive... I was hoping for a little bit more of
the mystery and a little bit more into the politics
and the different things that were going behind
the scenes as far as everybody trying to play
it for their own advantage and I think that they
kind of didn't do what they could have with that
and kind of skipped to some other stuff but I
don't think they they They delve too deep into
anything and then it just kind of made the whole
thing lackluster Yeah, it didn't really do it
for me but and at one point they're like all
ha ha and we're all loving Jesus and he's back
and you know Mary Magdalene has her hand on his
shoulder and they're all looking at him like
yay, and then he's just gone. Spoiler alert.
Yeah, I don't care. Yeah, he literally just disappears
and Everybody's like oh well guess we gotta go
walk around and find him again and it's just
a lot of like oh man I guess we gotta go find
him and It was just, yeah, it was lackluster.
All right. So now a great review for Risen. Dan,
I know you saw one more that you caught up with.
What was that one? Yeah, it's in the rewatch
for me, but it's currently now came on Netflix
and it's... Justice League flashboy parent paradox
the DC animated film and I'm preparation for
Batman versus Superman It might be it might be
if I can make that excuse for it No, it's because
I was like I got I was watching the cartoon Young
Justice and I was kind of like wanted to watch
something similar But there wasn't really any
Cartoon series, but this is the closest thing.
So yeah, I picked it up and I watched it before
but I wanted to see again and I'm I love alternate
storylines, alternate universe storylines, so
I still think it's one of DC's best. It's highly
violent, though. I mean, so I'm wondering if
they could transform this into, with all the
R -rated talk when it comes to comic book movies,
kind of an interesting one to go to, because
though this is rated PG -13, I wonder if they
did the same thing for a live action if it would
be rated R, but for those that don't know, it's
a story regarding Flash. the character who goes
back in time or something happens where things
change and now the world's different Batman is
different in the sense that it's not Bruce Wayne
it's his father because Bruce was killed so his
father stayed alive and other things like other
changes the big thing is that Aquaman and Wonder
Woman are fighting so the whole world is kind
of like this apocalyptic mess but it's well done
the action scenes are well done the animation
The style I'm still not a huge fan of the style
because it's almost anime ish But I kind of I
get over that and I can appreciate it. But uh,
like I said, I still think it's probably I DC
hasn't made one to this level in a while I still
think it was kind of the crowning achievement
for them in a sense and then ever since then
they've been They've been kind of going towards
the new 52 stories, which haven't been nearly
as good But I don't know I would I probably give
it about you know, solid seven half eight out
of ten Nice. Definitely a good recommend there.
I actually do like the alternate universe, alternate
timeline type stories, so that's why I kind of
like playing that injustice game because it kind
of gives you a little different look. But yeah,
sounds good. As far as, we need to squeeze one
more in because we literally just finished this
film right before the record and we had heard
nothing but... people crap on this film last
year and so I gotta get this off my chest but
we just actually finished a legend starring Tom
Hardy and Tom Hardy and I gotta say I don't know
what the big problem with this film was from
everybody I Enjoyed this film thoroughly. I thought
Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy were both fantastic Man
it's hard to say because one of them's playing
so much more of a crazy character and one of
them's playing much more of a Likeable up to
a certain point when things go a little bit different
It's really weird seeing them play these two
characters off of each other because they are
he does find a way to make them so different
but I I don't get all the hate for this film.
I thought it was very humorous at a lot of times.
I thought it was brutal at times. I thought it
had interesting themes going on as far as loyalty
to family versus understanding if your brother's
being a douchebag and kind of where you draw
that line. I thought it had a good balance of
action, comedy, drama. I think there was a couple
moments at the end that kind of... come out of
left field and you're not quite sure on the character's
motivations in a couple parts but on the first
watch maybe it's just because I was hearing everybody
say that this was utter garbage that it far exceeded
my expectations I don't know what you felt Amanda
yeah definitely I'm right in line with your feelings
on that I did not expect to hate it though I
was totally ready to love it and hearing all
the crap about it I was super bummed like man
so when I actually you know saw it and all those
are kind of you know pushed to the wayside there
then as soon as I started watching it and I was
like totally vested I'm like yes this is super
awesome it looked great Tom Hardy on point in
his suits and probably do need the subtitles
yeah yeah some serious cockney stuff going on
but the only thing that kind of hurt my heart
a little bit was his relationship with his wife
or whatever that kind of yeah at the end there
it gave me the hashtag feels a couple times like
i was like man it kind of put me put me in i
put myself in a position and and just kind of
tried to feel what she's feeling and it was you
know i didn't really get like you said the motivation
for a couple things that one of the characters
did because it really didn't seem like it fit
the character yeah it didn't fit didn't fit his
his mo really but uh overall i really really
enjoyed it um it wasn't a it wasn't really a
feel -good movie but it had a couple moments
that um i was like yes it had like some fist
pump moments for me if there's anybody that's
a die -hard fan of tom hardy or if there's anybody
that loves gangster mobster movies do not listen
do not let the critics sway you on this because
i think you will enjoy it I'm not saying it's
a masterpiece or, you know, one of the best movies
I saw from 2015, but if you're a fan of those
types of movies, I would see this because I think
it's worth a watch. It does feel a little long
to me. We checked where we were at and it felt
like I'd been watching the movie for two hours
and we were only an hour into it. So like an
hour and a half. So maybe it feels a little it
might feel a little bit long for some people,
but I honestly think just. for the fact of watching
Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy play against each other
in this film and being able to see the humor
and the not just humor I don't want to make it
seem like it's funny funny haha or something
like that but the the humorous way that they
act and it's just some batshit craziness the
brutality that comes into this I mean I think
this this is a good I think I would put this
in a good company with gangster mobster picks
so would not be swayed by the by the negative
reviews I actually got to go back and read some
of the negative reviews and listen to some of
the podcasts about this to figure out what everybody's
issue was not like I said not saying it's perfect
but I think it was much better than people gave
it credit for so I would give this one like a
seven out of ten I'm gonna give it an eight I
really really liked it all right So that is Legend
and that's it for what we've been watching real
quickly then as we close out looking ahead to
the week ahead for Blu -ray releases. We've got
quite a few here. We got In the Heart of the
Sea from last year. We have Victor Frankenstein
from last year and we have Macbeth and Tribe.
Those are the films from last year and then for
I guess for anybody that's a fan of some Finally
out on blu -ray or new additions. We've got Howard
the Duck on blu -ray batteries not included along
came Polly for some reason if you're a species
fan you got species 2 species 3 and species the
awakening and Yeah, we can finally see Macbeth
as far as theater releases wide definitely streaming
on Amazon as well. So Macbeth is yep Oh, cool.
Excellent. As far as theater releases, the wide
releases are Zootopia, London Has Fallen, and
Whiskey Tango, Foxtrot. We talked all about all
of those a little bit in last week's episode
as we previewed March. And then as far as limited
or video -on -demand releases, you have Night
of Cups, The Other Side of the Door, The Wave,
and I don't know if I'm going to say that right.
A meal? It's almost like Amelie, but there's
already a film that's called that. I think it's
Amelie. I hope so. Amelie? Emily? It seems like
it's it's it's a read the the plot for that film
makes it sound exactly like The visit from last
year except instead of grandparents the kids
are with a babysitter. That is not who they think
she is But I don't know why I'm talking about
that film. But Dan, if you had your choice of
all those films that we just mentioned, which
one are you most interested in? Well, the Blu
-ray for Howard the Duck is super, super enticing.
The fact that movie is going to Blu -ray is insane
to me. And Xanadu. Wow. Oh yeah, I forgot about
that. Honestly, I'm really... Zootopia looks
like it could be good. And looks like it could
be really good. Part of me I'm not very proud
of. Does want to see Linda has fallen Even like
just that like need of seeing just a crazy over
-the -top Insane action movie that makes no sense.
But yeah, so it's obvious where I want to see
in theaters Okay, what about you Amanda? I want
to see the other side of the door. I think that
looks pretty freaking creepy. You would All right
I'm going to go with Dan. I'm interested in Zootopia
with a caveat that I will be seeing Macbeth because
I love Shakespeare and I love Fassbender. So
let's put them together and see what happens
even though I'm probably going to need subtitles
for the subtitles. So alright, so that is it
