Hey, this is Steve Blum, and you are listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. Today on episode

70 of The Cinema Geeks, we discuss the growing

cast of Doctor Strange. We react to the first

teaser from Disney's The Jungle Book. We talk

about which Marvel characters might be showing

up in each other's films soon. And in our main

attraction, we play a brand new game, Fantasy

Filmmaker. All that and more coming up on episode

70 with The Cinema Geeks. All right, welcome

to episode 70, like we said, of The Cinema Geeks.

I am one of your geeks, Optimus Solo. Joining

me, as always, is movie rebel Dan. Hello. Hey,

how's it going? Pretty good. And hard candy Mandy.

Hello. What's happening? The last time you'll

be on air before you're one year older. Oh, man.

Really? Yeah. True that. Let's see what I get

some business out of the way because we usually

do it at the end give people a quick shout out

to Call to action. I guess is the better word

call to action. We just put out our final actual

review from the Tarantino retrospective myself

and Dan and as part of that we have a poll up

on the website so people should go to the website

and vote and what you're voting on is out of

four possible directors that we would do for

the next retrospective so you need to go to the

website there you can find out who those four

directors are and you can cast a vote to help

us decide what we will do next I haven't checked

at the moment and I don't know if you've seen

how many votes we've got or who's in the lead

or whatnot, but I've been getting messages from

other fellow podcasters and past former hosts

and stuff like that on who's winning and who's

not and who they're voting for. So apparently

some people are interested in helping us decide

what's next. 40 votes, I think, last of my checks.

Wow. I didn't even know we had 40 listeners.

But yeah, I know. Maybe people just really like

voting in polls. It's like, you know what? I

almost got one of those computers that like changes

the IP address every time they log in or something.

Exactly. But yeah, so there are four very different

directors, I would say, and all come with different

backgrounds, which would be interesting to see

who is winning. So check that out, and we'll

kind of announce the winner in our final wrap

-up episode of the Quentin Tarantino Retrospective.

Yeah, so if you if you're said that the Tarantino

retrospective is ending you still have one more

episode to listen to so we're gonna do some fun

wrap -up lists and ranks and all kinds of little

awards that we'll give out for the Tarantino

filmography. So there's one more chance to listen

to that and then obviously like Dan said to listen

to see who is going to be next. Dan, how's your

week been going and what's new? Well, you know

football's back so... Probably the worst football

weekend I've had in quite a long time. Opening

weekend, being a Giants fan, very aggravating

loss. That was beyond aggravating. I'm not even

a Giants fan in Iowa. Yeah, yeah, so that was

that was not fun to watch and then I have to

congratulate you because we actually played each

other first week of fantasy football and It was

a heart -fart game came down to the bitter end,

but I ended up losing so Adrian Peterson just

decided not to show up the first week. So kind

of and no he definitely hurt you Yeah, I thought

for sure you're gonna be able to beat me with

him go on the last Yeah, I mean Julio Jones got

you like a trillion points. So Who would have

known I had two guys going Monday and they both

scored two touchdowns So, um, I'll take my, my

weekly, uh, turn or visit at the, at the first

place podium. And then I will watch the rest

of the season. But hopefully not, hopefully not.

But I got to, I'm going up against a JD this

next week and he put up some points last week.

So hopefully I can, I can make it two for two

and taking down fellow podcasting friends. But

we'll see. Meanwhile, the Dolphins did win. So

it wasn't pretty, but it happened. So we're going

to take it. Our first six quarterbacks we're

playing this year are all terrible. They've won

three games in the last five years. Yeah, when

Kirk Cousins is one of the best ones you're playing.

Yeah, exactly. So I think the rookie will be

the best one we play from Buffalo. But anyways,

Amanda, how was your week? Anything fun or exciting

that you've done recently? You know, just...

going to a surprise Ed Sheeran concert last night,

bought it and work, you know? It'd be huge. I

don't know, apparently movie podcasters don't

know who Ed Sheeran is though, so that might

be falling on deaf ears. Well that's because

you're old crotchety men, and I'm the only young

hip in the now person that's not true, but definitely

check him out, he's pretty awesome. There's also

Christina Pirri and uh... So it was a good time.

It was probably the most low -key show I've ever

been to, but I had probably one of the best times

ever. And if you don't know who Ed Sheeran is,

you should at least check out his YouTube covers

of crazy songs like Christina Aguilera's Dirty

or... He even does the Redman rap. Yeah, him

and Passenger did... No diggity. No diggity.

He does everything. It's fun. So I enjoyed it

as well. So that was basically what we did this

last week. I'm still car shopping, so hopefully

I'll eventually have my own vehicle soon. So

it's exciting stuff, buying cars. Not really.

Alright, so let's get into some movie stuff.

That's what people have tuned in for, so we usually

start by checking out the box office from the

past weekend, Rotten Tomatoes, etc, etc. And

we are in crazy good times for the box office,

right Dan? Yeah, crazy times maybe. It is a whole

bunch of nothing, but somehow these two films

that debuted this last weekend actually put up

some money. The Perfect Guy, eh? coming in at

number one barely with 25 .8 million and the

visit from M Night Shyamalanma Ding Dong came

in at 25 .4. So they both debuted at 25 million.

Does that surprise you? Yeah, a little bit. Mostly

because I'd never heard of The Perfect Guy until

they came out on the box office and I'm curious

like how that compares to other Shyamalan films.

with 25 million. It seems like a success now

compared to everything he's done previously,

which has been god -awful. I've heard good things,

I've not seen The Visit, but it seems like it's

at least not being called one of the worst movies

of the year, which is a step in the right direction

for him. Ten movies, though. If you look at a

top ten, The Visit, which I hadn't heard of until

just recently, obviously I know M. Night Shyamalan,

the perfect guy. not know much about. War Room,

I still don't know. I mean, I know what we talked

about in kind of the brief synopsis or whatever,

but had never heard of it before. No Escape had

never heard before like September. 90 Minutes

in Heaven, I still don't think this is the first

time I've even read that. And then the one from

last week, un gallo con muchos huevos. Yeah,

it's like it's like the offseason where it's

like all the, you know, bench players are getting

in and like, I didn't even know these guys were

on our team. Right? Like, who's number 12? It's

like spring training in baseball. You're like,

who's number 98? What is going on? There's no

98s in baseball. But yeah, so Walk of the Woods

was the fourth place and then Mission Impossible.

Rogue Nation was number five with War Room at

number three. None of them making much money.

And then as far as Rotten Tomatoes go, to kind

of just... I guess put a highlight on what we're

going through right now at the box office and

what our choices are at the theater. The Perfect

Guy has a 22%, War Room has a 38%, Transporter

Refueled 16%, No Escape 42%, The Visit 59%, A

Walk in the Woods 46%, 90 Minutes in Heaven 21%,

Sinister 2 13%, and Hitman Agent 47 7. Yeah,

I don't think you add those up you'd even get

a hundred I Definitely don't think that that

would be us. Yeah, that's not gonna work out

for you So I mean if you want to see a good movie

at the moment you have to go back to ones that

were have been out for a while Mission Impossible

straight out of Compton Ant -man, you know stuff

like that. The good news is I think this weekend

it's gonna change a little bit so I almost want

to go on a rant though. Like why did we have

to sit through three weeks of nothing? All to

have like 17 movies come out this weekend, I

don't know. Like, could we not have spaced that

out just a little bit? But yeah, the ones coming

out this next weekend, actually as you listen

to this, they're probably being released already

or, you know, some of them could probably come

out early. Pawn Sacrifice, Black Mass, Everest,

Captive, Sicario, and Maze Runner Scorched Trials.

So, no need for them to not all come out on the

same day. But I guess that leads us into what

we think about for this next weekend. Which way

are you going, Dan? Are you going to make a box

office prediction, a Rotten Tomatoes prediction?

I'm going to take a trick out of Amanda's book

and try to guess the top three. Oh, wow. This

is a tough week to do that. Yeah, yeah, but I

think it makes it a little bit more fun because

you got kind of a collective group here, a lot

of very different films. You have, you know,

your young... Teen film you have a gangster film

and then like in a disaster survival movie. So

actually gonna i'm gonna say that for number

one we have uh Maze runner scorch earth. It's

probably gonna screech out with number one. You

know, it's got that following. It's a sequel.

It's young adults I think it's it has that for

number two two and three are hard like i've been

going back and forth between black mass and everest

i'm gonna i'm gonna go and say black or i'm gonna

say Everest is number two. Jake Gyllenhaal has

a bigger cast. I think it does seem like a movie

you would get more out of in a theater experience

than Black Mass. And Johnny Depp, I know, has

some detractors as of late. So I'll say number

one, Maze Runner, two, Everest, and three, Black

Mass. All right. Making a hard tap three prediction

with three brand new films that are being released.

I applaud you for making the The risky pick there.

Amanda, what do you think? Are you got something

in mind for this weekend at the box office? I

will see Dan's three and I will flip them. I'm

going to go with Black Mesa number one, Sicario

number two, and Maze Runner number three. So

Everest doesn't make it top three? Nope. This

could be number four. Wow. I feel like I should

just say something easy and be like, the top

five doesn't consist of all new movies. Man,

you guys are... I was gonna just try to predict

the number one and I can't do that now because

you guys have gone all out. Man, I'm going to

say that... Oh, man. I'll go top three too. I'll

put a top three out there that's not the same

as you guys. I will put Black Mass at number

one, Maze Runner at number two, but I will go

with Everest at number three because I'm not

sure how wide a release Sicario will have immediately.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know if it's going

to be released in as many theaters right away

as the other ones, but I could be wrong. So I

will go with Sicario at number four. Alright,

we'll see whose predictions for the top three

are the closest since we're all basically picking

the same movies in different orders. As for news

stories, we've got a couple things to get through

before we get to trailer talk and then like we

said we have a fun, hopefully a fun new game

at our main attraction that you guys should definitely

check out. First up though for news stories,

a couple things here. First off, some bad news

possibly when it comes to a couple different...

Films and that would be the gambit film and the

sequel to Pacific Rim This is the one time that

I'm gonna freak out a little bit before you even

get going because I'm super mad that Again, there's

some kind of hold up with gambit and the Pacific

Rim to alright camera tutorial just get Your

stuff together and make it happen because I like

the first one but I wanted more out of it and

I think they need to do it and I'm pretty mad

that now it's basically getting pushed off to

the side, off to the back burner, off the stove,

not gonna happen. It's a lot of fire stuff that

you were just talking about. Yeah, I'm mad about

it. Dan, are you mad that Pacific Rim 2 is gonna

be held up? I was almost surprised it was gonna

be made, so to me it's just like, I felt like

this was inevitable. I didn't think it was gonna

come through. I'm a little upset. I was looking

forward to seeing Pacific Rim 2 for sure, so

it's almost like a... You know, I'm definitely

disappointed, especially because it's getting

on hold to get the focus on Godzilla and Kong

crossover movie, and I'd rather see Pacific Rim.

Why see a monster movie with no robots? I'd rather

have robots in my monster movie. Yeah, we don't

need to see monsters versus monsters. We need

to see the genres collide. Yeah, I could see

more of that world, too. I know a lot of people...

Pacific Rim, too, was weirdly divisive. A lot

of people liked it and then a lot of people really

had bad reactions to it. But I could definitely

see some more of that world and I'd be down for

that. And I'm definitely not a big huge fan of

the monster mashup that they're trying to set

up between all of the Godzilla, King Kong...

Yeah, especially when we're having that Rampage

movie coming out too. I feel like that's gonna

be similar so... Right. I don't know. It's like

first we're gonna have a Godzilla film where

he has to fight like multiple... His like iconic

enemies, I guess you could call it and then since

that's not enough then after that We're gonna

throw him in with like King Kong. Why not just

combine them all like the come on now like that

seems like the perfect answer That's just yeah

be like the Mortal Kombat of like disaster movies

and we can make it Pacific Rim 2 But yeah, I

don't know I I guess whatever that company is

just grasping at straws right now and I think

they're really in a position where they have

to hope that Warcraft somehow is not a bomb,

because that's the same company that's doing

Warcraft, right? Yeah. And if that tanks next

year, then I think they're going to be in some

financial positions where some of these big plans

are not going to come to fruition. So I think

that somebody saw that early and decided to hold

back on Pacific Rim 2 for the moment. What are

your thoughts, Dan, on Gambit losing its director?

Uh, not too surprising. I feel like when it comes

to most movies, the director's really mostly

just a figurehead, so I'm not too worried about

it, honestly. We've seen this happen a lot, especially

with Marvel. So, again, I feel like Gambit's

also one of those movies that's essentially just

not gonna happen. It just seems like every day

there's a new story about, you know, Tainted

Tate not really wanting to do it, and now it's

losing a director, so... Who knows if it actually

ends up getting made? Yeah. Yeah, it just seems

like it's in kind of a purgatory of sorts that

we see a lot of times with movies. And what happens

then is eventually even if they do get made,

you kind of can see the ramifications of everything

I went through to try to get made. It's usually

not a good thing. Amanda, I know you haven't

seen the... Previous to Planet of the Apes film,

so you probably can't comment too much on this

That's still something on our to -do list to

check out, but Dan Okay, but you fell asleep

Okay, that doesn't count then. As far as the

next Planet of the Apes film, War for Planet

of the Apes, we have an article coming out this

week talking about who will be the, I guess the

main human figure, and that name being thrown

about is none other than Woody Harrelson. So

what's your take on shifting now we've had Franco,

and then we had Jason Clarke, and now they're

talking about going to Woody Harrelson for the

third film. Interesting, that is unexpected.

Definitely. Yeah, I thought they would at least

be me keep Jason Clarke and his family I like

what he hails in a lot. He's like one of my favorite

actors. I feel like he can do anything I just

seem weird to see him headlining a summer blockbuster

though. That doesn't seem like a you know, something

Yeah be doing I'm not against it these really

that I'm hoping they make the star of the show

stays the apes, because my guess is maybe considering

the ending of not to give anything away that

maybe he's some sort of military presence or

if he's the villain or if he's the, you know,

I don't know. That seems to be the most plausible

scenario that he would be some type of villainous

military figurehead. We've seen him play, you

know, out of the furnace. He can play a menacing

figure for sure. Yeah, I'd like to see him go

up against Caesar. and see how that works out.

But I'm not, I think you hit it right on the

head though, the main character from these films

usually is the apes themselves. So I think you

can get away with having, even Jason Clarke I

don't think is that big of a name for like a

summer blockbuster. I mean, he's gained a lot

of ground in the last couple of years, but you

know, I just think it's a franchise that can

kind of, it can still do justice with having

someone like a Woody Harrelson, Jason Clarke,

not to. take anything away from them they're

good actors but it doesn't need that like Tom

Cruise or you know big -name blockbuster star

type thing Amanda excited for some does does

Woody Harrelson being involved make you more

excited to catch up with the other two films

recently have seen have seen him in seven psychopaths

and it's kind of reinstilled how badass Woody

Harrelson actually is. We'll be talking more

about that probably a little bit later. So I

think I'm geared up to see Woody Harrelson as

a villain. Alright. I know you're excited about

this one though for sure. Probably way more than

Dan and I. We'll see. But Charlie's Angels reboot

with... Do you just want to take over? Elizabeth

Banks directing. So you're apparently on board

for this. Yeah, I love the other... Charlie's

Angels movies, and I know I'm gonna get a lot

of flack from that. I don't care. Wait, let's

clarify that. You liked the first one, or you

liked both of them? I liked both of them. Okay.

I just wanted people to hear that so they could

direct their flack accordingly. Okay, yeah, both

of them. Super legit. Love Karen Diaz. I even

like Drew Barrymore in this. Lucy Lu. Yeah, cool.

I like her too, I guess. But, I mean, I think

it's a fun story, and... Do you want any of them

to return? to the reboot or just Bill Murray?

Just Bill Murray would be fine. I mean, I've

already seen him as the Angels. I think that

it's only fitting in line to have some new Angels.

Dan, any excitement for Charlie's Angels? Oh,

buckets of excitement. Honestly, I can't really...

I never really watched the originals. I remember...

I've watched them on TV. I haven't watched them

on TV too, so I can't really give a straight

opinion on those. Again, I... It's just something

I don't personally have interest in, but I can

see the appeal, for sure. Maybe if they get the

good cast and a good director it could actually

end up being pretty good. 21 Jump Street ended

up working really well, so maybe they went more...

I know the other ones were more comedic. It wasn't

straightforward, but even if they played that

a little heavier it could maybe be even better.

Yeah, I think that would be a good direction.

I'm like you. I don't know if I've even seen

the other ones straight through, so I shouldn't

comment too much. It's just not something that...

Could get my interest at the time, but I agree

if they did something like the 21 Jump Street

did that might work Alright, let's get into some

more superhero stuff Dan Marvel crossovers galore

the talk about X -Men being possibly seen Deadpool

and All these different characters possibly showing

up in each other's movies. Obviously. This is

outside of the Avenger universe but what do you

think about the possibility of some of these

guys showing up in each other's movies as they're

kind of hinting at? I guess it depends on like

involvement for sure so like you know Wolverine

showing up briefly in a Deadpool movie I can

kind of understand or Deadpool in an X -Men movie

maybe I know how big one's been like the Fantastic

Four possibly trying to show up if that ends

up being still going for it or not I don't know

it can be done well like I'm thinking of It's

not really a crossover, but when Wolverine shows

up in like X -Men First Class, it's brief and

pretty funny, but eventually it can get kind

of just a little bit too much, so I don't know.

We'll see for sure, but I kind of like the X

-Men universe staying within itself and not trying

to expand and just being buying to lonesome,

so I hope it doesn't try to do too many crossovers.

Yeah, I think you kind of hit it again on the

on the head there with if it's done, right and

if it's done More sporadically or you know when

it makes sense instead of just like oh Let's

throw everybody in each other's movie type thing

then I would be on board. What about you? Maybe

you know down to the idea of Deadpool showing

up somewhere or or one of the X -Men Showing

up in his film somewhere. Yeah, I'm okay with

that as long as it's done, right? I think that

it should You know, add a little touch of flair

there. I don't think it needs to be brief if

it's done, right? You know what I mean? I know

that Colossus is supposed to show up in Deadpool,

which I think is great because that's a character

that has not done much in the X -Men movies,

but even maybe had the opportunity to shine in

like a Deadpool film. So I do think that'd be

kind of cool to get some of the characters that

get overlooked in the bigger films and when you

have a movie like Deadpool allowing you to kind

of highlight those a little bit and give them

some more screen time. Yeah, I'd be on board

for that as well. Speaking of the one other group

that you did mention, the Fantastic Four, that's

one group that I would personally not like to

have show up in any of those films, but another

article that came out was talking about the Fantastic

Four sequel, and these are quotes coming from

producer Simon Kinberg. Do I think it was unfairly

treated? I don't know. And then, quote, I'm really

focused on the next one. I do believe there's

a great Fantastic Four movie that we've made

with that cast. So I'm going to figure out what

that is. That paired with Kate Mara's comment,

which was, quote, I would love to play Sue Storm

in a movie that everybody loves. That would be

great. It's just like they're all basically saying

the same thing that they like hey, we had a great

cast and We'd love to make a good movie with

that cast and we just didn't do it. So I Would

making there's no way that I don't know is it

nobody would watch Fantastic Four 2 would they?

There was only a hundred people that watched

the first one. I would say it's highly unlikely.

I mean unless they got like amazing wave reviews

or like it it's hard to bounce back with a film

that like Even movies that say are financially

not that successful but are critically acclaimed

like that do really well even when they get sequels

like I'm thinking of something I kick ass right

which didn't do that well, but it had pretty

overall was well regarded and then when that

sequel came out it did not do not perform and

so I for a movie that was both not liked by anyone

that much and It was financially I don't see

how, like, what are you building on? Exactly.

Well, currently Fox is 100 % committed. It's

scheduled to open June 9th, 2017. So I guess

we have about a year and a half or a little bit

more for them to realize that that's a terrible

decision. Who's making decisions here? And we'll

talk more about Fantastic Four shortly. Oh, nice.

A couple more things to talk about real quick

before we get into trailers. I know this one

also has Amanda super excited. A new installment

to the Jeepers Creepers franchise. Finally! Now,

again, we've talked about this a number of times

when this happens. This movie has been in the

works for over 10 years. Does that scare you,

Amanda? No, it doesn't. What scares me is the

freaking creeper because that thing terrified

me back in the day. One and two, definitely,

they... I would say the second one being a sequel

wasn't as great as the first one but it still

creeped me the hell out. I think the character

of the creeper is definitely one that can do

some damage and I'm waiting for him to be let

loose for another 23 days in the spring so he

can eat people. Dan, have you seen the first

or the second Jeepers Creepers? That I have not.

I have not seen either. Okay, so you're missing

out. I need to, you know, October's around the

corner, so I'm always looking for some horror

films to check out. I think that's one of the

first movies I ever saw Justin Long in. I actually

am not even a horror fan, and somehow I've seen

the first Jeepers Creepers. You sat through that?

I did, and I actually didn't hate it. Where were

you? It's a ringing endorsement. Was I drunk?

No, I wasn't drunk. And yeah, it is a ringing

endorsement. I don't know. I think it was just

like on TV or something. And for some reason

I watched it. I don't even know how it sucked

me in. But I didn't watch the second one. But

I did watch the first one and it was mildly enjoyable,

I remember. So I mean, just me seeing a horror

film, I guess, is a... endorsement. I'm shocked.

I'm in a mild state of disbelief that you actually

watched this movie because everything about it

is something that you hate. Yeah, I'm not saying

I'm signing up to watch the third one. I just

remember seeing the first one and like I said

I didn't hate it. Alright the last news story

for us today is all about Doctor Strange because

there's been casting rumors and news all about

that film in the last couple weeks so I just

want to go over the overall cast up to this point

and get your guys reaction overall. So Dan we

got Benedict Cumberbatch obviously playing Doctor

Strange. We now have the Rachel McAdams, who

we don't know who she's playing, I don't think

yet, but being involved. We have, uh, Ejiofor

playing Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton playing the

Ancient One, and the last name that got thrown

about there was also Mads Mikkelsen being involved.

And Benedict Cumberbatch? So, Cumberbatch, Ejiofor,

Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams,

whatever. Dan, what's your reaction to that cast?

I think it's the best cast Marvel has had, just

acting talent wise. Like, it's kind of crazy.

You know, if you didn't tell people that was

a comic book movie, I don't think many people

would think that would be... You could put that

list of casting out, like, at the beginning of

the year, and just put, like, untitled film,

and people would have listed that as one of their

most anticipated films of the year. Yeah. It'd

be like, oh, it's some sort of Shakespearean

drama. It's like, kind of. It's about a dude

with magical powers. uh... uh... yeah i think

the cast is i mean children before playing uh...

uh... conflict villain great i always thought

you'd make a great black panther but the fact

he's gonna be baren morrow is uh... in interesting

it's definitely not like the the character of

the comic which is fine but uh... i think he

Seeing him play a villain is great because he

was awesome in serenity as like he's got like

a you know as the antagonist in that so looking

forward to seeing him and Tilda Swinton's great

in everything she does so it's I'm really looking

forward to a casting wise so Yeah, I'm on board

as well Amanda. What do you think? Yeah, I'm

pretty much on board for anything comic books

I'm not too familiar with the Doctor Strange

storyline, but I am interested in finding out

via this movie Alright, so nobody upset about

that casting nor, I mean I think if anybody in

the world was upset about the casting for Doctor

Strange so far that they need to check their

pulse or I don't know what they want. Doesn't

seem like you can get any better than what they've

assembled so far. So that is the news There's

a couple other items that we didn't go over so

you definitely have to check out the website

and see what those items are and Let us know

what you're excited about or what you're not

excited about as far as the news stories this

week But that takes us into trailer talk and

we have a few trailers that have been released

Including the second trailer for Creed in the

heart of the sea bridge of spies a new trailer

for hunger games We had the first teaser for

the jungle book We had a trailer for Divergent,

Allegiant, something, something, something, as

well as a bunch of horror films and a variety

of other things. So Amanda, I'm not going to

let you go first because I have to talk about

one first because it's the only one I want to

talk about on the whole list. The Jungle Book?

It is The Jungle Book. You thought I was going

to take it. I thought someone was going to steal

it, so I'm just jumping right out there. But

the Jungle Book teaser, where we get to see our

first look at kind of the look of what this film

will be, the CGI, some of the voice work, including,

obviously, Scarlett Johansson, and just our first

look. And I got to say, I was very tentative

with this whole project. I didn't know how they

were going to pull it off or what it was going

to look like, et cetera, et cetera. I got to

say, I'm... At this point, I'm still all in.

I'm all in, actually. I'm more confident than

I was before. I'm not sure everybody would have

the same reaction as I am, but man, the cast

that's assembled for this one, the look of it

so far, and maybe they just got me with Baloo

whistling at the end, the bare necessities. But

I don't know, Dan, what did you think about the

trailer or the teaser? I did like it. I do think

the CGI looks very convincing for the most part.

curious to see how the voices are going to work.

That to me is the key. It seems like they didn't

show that too much. I was a little worried that

it would be a little too serious, but it does

seem, like you mentioned with the whistling at

the end, that they're not going to forget the

comedy. But I'm looking forward to it. It looks

like it could be good. I'm a little mad because

when we did box office predictions, I put that

in for this year, and it's not coming out until

next year. So that one I got wrong. I think for

a live action jungle book, I'm in. Did it take

you like five or 10 seconds when you're hearing

Scarlett Johansson just doing voice work to get

her out of your mind? Yeah, it's a robot snake.

It's weird. It's like, man, I hear this operating

system talking. But honestly, for those people

that were upset or whatever, getting their panties

in a bundle over the character being a different

gender. I have absolutely, especially after hearing

it, I have absolutely no problem with that character

being female. Oh. You're worried about the gender

of a snake. I don't know what to tell you. Exactly.

People were upset though. People were like, how

dare you change the gender of Kai? It's like,

it's a snake and it's a little boy. It makes,

you know, I don't know. Hey, if you're a little

boy and you hear the voice of Scarlett Johansson,

you'd probably be hypnotized. Exactly. It works.

So Amanda, what was your reaction to the teaser?

The first look at the Jungle Book? You know,

I was a little leery too, especially hearing

there's like two Jungle Books coming out now,

right? I don't know. There's two of everything.

We only do things in pairs. Well, I was a little

leery, but I'm pretty familiar with the classic

and I was definitely intrigued that now seeing

the teaser, I'm on board. I don't know if I liked

the visual on the snake as much but I really

I really like the visual on all the other animals

for sure especially with the kind of the fighting

back and forth between a couple of them that

they showed so I don't know I think it looks

like a lot of fun and and like as long as it

keeps that little comedic edge or a little bit

of that looseness at times especially with the

balloon character and and King Louie a little

bit even though he's kind of was always a somewhat

of a I don't know intimidating character so I

don't know I think it's gonna be interesting

for sure so that's my pick I'm gonna say yay

for that trailer Amanda now you can go which

which one of the other trailers would you like

to bring up if any oh no I can go well I'm gonna

go in directions D you do not see coming and

I'm gonna pick the lobster as a yay I think it's

definitely a weird flick but um I think it looks

kind of funny and Colin Farrell what do you know

he's giving me this awful I think the concept

if you don't fall in love at this place, you're

gonna turn into an animal I think that's pretty

cool and I'm interested to see what goes on this

movie because I really can't figure it all out

yet All right. So an intriguing yay for the lobster

from Amanda That was actually I'm just more shocked

because there was a horror film on here that

also starred Nicolas Cage and she did not go

with it. I knew that you were expecting me to

say that one. Interesting. Dan, did you have

any other one that you wanted to mention since

Amanda brought that one up? No, that's the only

one I felt like besides those two, everything

else was just kind of... I have another one.

I'm going to go with a yay for Pay the Ghost.

Nicholas Cage horror film, yay for Amanda. I

was also somewhat intrigued by Demolition. just

because it's Jake Gyllenhaal, so whatever. I'll

watch it. I don't know if I was super intrigued

by the trailer, but it's Jake Gyllenhaal, so

I'll be excited for it regardless. So that would

be the only other one that I would bring up possibly.

But you already just did break it up. Yeah, shut

up. Anyway, so those are the trailers. There's

probably four or five other ones that we didn't

mention that are available on the website as

well. So let us know which ones are those you

are interested in, which one you would give a

yay or which one you would give a nay to. So

we are going to take a quick break and then we're

going to be back for the main attraction, which,

like Dan said in the opening, will be a interesting

new game that we play, and that is called The

Fantasy Filmmaker. So we'll be right back after

the break. On the simplistic reviews podcast

we talk movies We talk TV We talk trying to make

our spot sound more exciting by adding explosions

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you could have got the

point across with sound effects. Not the real

thing Download the show on iTunes or at simplisticreviews

will cover that! No, they won't. No, they probably

won't. Hey guys it's Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy

Mandy and we just wanted to let you guys know

about another podcast out there that we both

think you would all enjoy. It's one of both of

our favorite shows to listen to and it's none

other than the True Bromance podcast. True Bromance

is a movie podcast hosted by longtime friends

Hiro and Barry and if you like to smile, laugh,

and just be genuinely entertained while listening

to movie talk then this is definitely the right

show for you. Each week, the guys break down

a recently released movie, and not only do they

tie in the movie that week to the beers that

they are drinking during the show, but they also

tie it into a real fun top and bottom five list

associated with that movie. It's a blast hearing

both sides of these lists and it definitely makes

them unique amongst all other movie review podcasts.

So we definitely want to recommend all of you

guys to go check out their show. Just search

out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes, Stitcher,

and all other podcast platforms. And if you listen

via iTunes, do us a favor and leave them a five

-star review. And don't forget to let them know

that the Cinema Geeks sent you. Now back to the

show. Do you see how your patience paid off?

Thanks for sticking with us here on episode 70

of The Cinema Geeks. It is time for our main

attraction, which like we've said is the fantasy

filmmaker and this is kind of how this is going

to work. Basically we have all decided to be

the casting director to create a film and there's

some criteria though as far as how we had to

do this. So we were able to choose any type of

older film that has not been remade in the last,

you know, 10 to 15 years. We could take like

a cartoon or a TV show that's never been made

into a film. We could take a fictional story

from our childhood or from the past that's never

been adapted into a film. Just any type of property

that has, you know, characters that we could

cast with modern day stars, actors, actresses,

etc. And then we needed to have at least Two

or three actors or actresses appearing in that

film and what we're gonna do is we're each gonna

take a turn we All three of us have two films

that we're gonna pitch for you guys That are

listening and then you're gonna be able to go

to the website vote and decide if you're going

to give that film the green lights Or if you're

going to trash it throw it in the trash sheet,

so we're not competing against each other We're

just trying to get you to vote for our film to

give it the green light so we can make it happen

Other than that, I don't think Dan, was there

any other criteria that we had in coming up with

this? No, that's pretty much it. And none of

us know what each other have picked. So there's

always that possibility that, I guess, that one

of us or two of us could pick the same film.

If that happens, that's fine. We'll just have,

I guess, some competing pitches for you, just

like they do in Hollywood with their four Robin

Hoods and this, that, and the other. So if one

of us picks the same one, that's fine. We'll

continue to go on with that and let you guys

vote. Maybe you'll vote both of them up. Or maybe

you'll pick which one is better. So I'm definitely

intrigued to see where you guys have gone with

your list and your kind of setting story, et

cetera. So who wants to start? Who wants to go

first? We need to have a setting and everything?

Well, not necessarily a setting, but I'm just

saying, like, which universe, which story, which

fictional land are we going to, et cetera. So.

Well, I want to go first because I know Dan's

going to blow mine out of the water. OK. Setting

up expectations, I get that. Very, very political,

you know. So before you go, let's first just

give the movie or the thing that's being adapted.

Just let me do my thing. Alright, you got it.

You're going. It's not your first rodeo. It's

not. I'm gonna go with a little bit of a theme

this time. And the theme is water, okay? The

theme is water. The theme is water. My first

movie came out in, the original came out in 1995.

It is known as Waterworld. Remaking Waterworld.

I'm remaking Waterworld. I think I love this

movie way more than most people. I've actually

heard that. Every time I've heard that come up

actually though on a podcast in like the last

year or two, people have said positive things

about it. I kind of, I do have a guilty pleasure

for Waterworld. I don't hate it either. Yeah,

I like it. I think it got trashed. I think it

was that time where it was like Kevin Costner's

gonna get, people no longer wanted him to be

a successful star and they're just like, we're

gonna trash every film he comes out with. In

a future where the polar ice caps have melted

and the earth is almost entirely submerged, a

mutated mariner fights starvation and outlaw

quote unquote smokers, which is what the bad

guys are called, and reluctantly helps a woman

and a young girl to find dry land. So I see a

crossover with Aquaman starring Jason Momoa.

Don't get ahead of them. Okay, so the Mariner

which is played originally by Kevin Costner I'm

going to cast Jai Courtney And the woman that

he helps her name is Helen in the movie she's

played by Janine Triple horn. Yeah, I'm gonna

replace her with Zoe Saldana So, Jai Courtney

is trying to save Zoe Saldana. Yep, yep. In the

water world. There's this little girl, and her

name is Enola. She's played by Tina Marino, something

like that. And I don't know enough about child

actors to not feel creepy and trolling for an

appropriate little girl for this part. So, if

you have any suggestions... tweet him to me because

I need help with that part. But I think that

a remake of Waterworld could definitely be a

good time. Dan, reaction to a new Waterworld?

You know what? I mean, I like the idea of making

a movie that necessarily wasn't a great film.

I mean, you know, I do kind of like it. And you

know what? I mean, if you had like Man -Max,

it could kind of be like the opposite of Man

-Max, you know? It literally just that is what

it was it was that those Basically taking the

same idea about doing the opposite so Who would

be the bad guy that would replace Dennis Hopper?

That's your job to come up with I think it's

going to be who I like Christoph Waltz All right,

you're gonna be the head of the smokers. All

right, I mean I don't know about the Jay Courtney

part, but... You're still false. Acting against

Jay Courtney. She doesn't win an Oscar for that.

That would make him look even... Jay Courtney

with some, like, gills, though. Like, he's, like,

fished out. You know what I mean? Like, buff

as shit. But, like, fished out. Not as much as

maybe, um, Kevin Costner. But maybe a little

more in some areas. Maybe he's got some cool

little gills on his side pecs or whatever he's

got going on. Web feet and hands. Yeah, they

should just go out with it. I need some artists

out there to do a rendering if you look like

the merman from alright dan follow that up follow

-up uh... the new water world what you got but

i'm also remaking a movie from the nineties and

i think maybe really that was even uh... more

rated than that of water world one that looked

as with uh... worst conflict movies ever made

as we're talking about fantastic for but i think

there is potential again for this property that

that deserves a legitimate adaptation and that

it's not on yes the man is already given at the

cream You know, huge in the 90s. He's not nearly

as big as he once was, but I do think there's

a great lore with that character that can be

made well. I mean, the HBO cartoon series was

great. So, you know, go hardcore with it. Make

it R -rated. Now, don't hold back. You know,

CGI is way better than it was back when that

was first made. So, who are you going to... Yeah.

So, the person I would have starring in it as

Al Simmons, who becomes Spawn, is of course none

other than Idris Elba. It'll give fantasy points

to Kevin, but I can live with that. But I think

he fits that mold. He certainly has the presence

to pull that off, so I think he'd be great as

a Spawn character. And he also has like his little

like guide he's that like old mystical guide

that kind of helps them out And you need someone

like that who better than Sam Elliott, you know,

oh yeah So he can play like the kind of similar

to you know, if you've seen Ghost Rider he plays

a similar character Sam Elliott is pretty much

Sam Elliott. The question is like who plays the

villains and well, I think spawn has a lot of

villains in the movie obviously you had the clown

playing you know but I don't know if I'd go that

route there's actually this other villain called

overkill who he's basically this bald dude with

like who's like gigantic he's like a robot kind

of I was thinking maybe you're that character

but if we do go with the clown from the original

not going with the original actor but going with

maybe Jack Lee or Earl Haley who I think is maybe

be a little bit more menacing less funny per

se he can be funny but in a different way but

also no he played the Rorschach from I would

think too, even getting Toby Keble maybe to do

some of the motion. I think maybe those characters

would be better motion captured. So if they do

it, like the violator having motion captured

by Toby Keble because he did such a great job

in Rise of the Planet of the Apes or Dawn of

the Planet of the Apes. And lastly, the director,

because I think that's a key point to it as well.

And it may be an obvious kind of a fanboy choice,

but I'm going to go with Guillermo del Toro.

He has... an understanding of kind of that type

of storyline, you know, he has done things with

like vampires and You know kind of the horror

genre and seeing him in the world of like spawn

and taking his Ideas and using like the designs

of time with Harlan I would really look forward

to see what that would look like So I think you'd

be able to do it. Well, he's already done Hellboy

and blade 2 so he has history with doing comic

book movies previously, so Well, Dan, you did

blow mine out of the water. I feel like all of

what you just said should have come out of my

mouth. But at least it came out of one of ours.

So you know you're getting at least one green

light vote. Nice, nice. Even went with the director.

I didn't even think about that. I'm going to

do something on the fly here. For my first one,

I am going to do something that has somewhat

already been done, but not quite. A few years

back, we had the reboot of the original Star

Trek series with Star Trek and Star Trek Into

Darkness where they cast... William Shatner and

Leonard Nimoy as younger versions of themselves

and we had Zoe Saldana who's gonna appear in

Waterworld in that film. So I decided well why

not do the same thing but let's do it with Star

Trek The Next Generation. So I don't know I'm

gonna lose people that aren't as geeky as the

rest of us probably but hopefully since we're

on the Geekcast Radio Network most people will

be familiar with Star Trek The Next Generation.

I'm gonna do a similar thing here. We're gonna

let J .J. Abrams direct it again, since he did

a decent job with the first group, and we're

gonna pretend that he's not busy with Star Wars

at this time. And again, I'm going the same route.

We're gonna go with a little bit younger versions

of these characters. So we gotta start with,

obviously, Captain Jean -Luc Picard. And I don't

know how well he can do, like, an accent that

would fit the name Jean -Luc Picard, but I feel

like... For me, the perfect choice to play the

younger version of this would be Mark Strong.

Interesting. Yeah, going with a fellow bald -headed

great actor for me. And I think if you hear the

rest of the cast, it might work. I see Amanda

staring at me with a look of disgust. To be fair,

I think Patrick Stewart looks exactly the same,

so we could probably just play it again. With

my second film, I had one that I really wanted

to just... cast the same person but we'll get

to that later. So then I headed to the toughest

casting for me was who would play number one

William Riker and that's a very important character

to the story he's got to have like an amount

of charisma yet I mean he's both immature but

not at the same time like he kind of has that

line going and I don't know I know you wanted

him to be cast as somebody else Dan but I thought

he might work well as Riker and that would be

Matthew Goode. So I have Mark Strong and Matthew

Goode as the two heads, you know, the captain

and the number one in control here. Alright,

we'll keep going with, I got a lot of them, so

bear with me. I got about four more, five more

to go here. And then we had Lieutenant Worf,

the Klingon. Now, obviously, he's going to have

a lot of makeup on and whatnot. He was played

by Michael Dorn in the original series, and I

thought even though he is appearing in Star Wars

since J .J. Abrams is coming back and doing more

Star Trek, he could bring him with him, and that

would be John Boyega. I think he has the right

stature for it, and once you put all the makeup

on and whatnot, I think he could pull off a war

persona there. So then we have Data, the android.

He might look funny as an Android, but he kind

of has I Feel like he has the the personality

to do this to kind of be like very Dry at times,

but logical and things like that So I'm going

with Dom Hull Gleason as as my Android data like

that. That's I can see that I Had it between

him and two other people and I it was really

tough to go back and forth so I decided to fit

one of the other people in as well, but Obviously

he can't be Data, so I was going to go with the

Q, played by John Delancey in the original series,

the main villain that kind of recurred, you know,

half a dozen times. And I was going to go with

Dane DeHaan as Q. I thought about him as Data,

but I thought maybe he would fit a better Q personality.

I think Jim Parsons would have been a perfect

Q. Oh, that's a good one too. I agree. And then

I had Jordy LaForge, and I decided to go with

David Oyelowo as that character. I feel like

he fits in with Matthew Good and Mark Strong

as kind of the three of the head guys there.

And then we had Counselor Troy, who I was gonna

go with, Rooney Mara. That's Whoopi Goldberg,

right? No, Counselor Troy was the one with the

dark hair that Riker liked that could read people's

minds. And who was Whoopi Goldberg? She was the

one in the food place, 10 Forward. I'm sorry.

Anyways, so yeah, Mark Strong, Matthew Good,

Boyega, Don Hogg, Lee Sin, Dane DeHaan, David

O 'Yellow O, and Rooney Mara. I know that's a

lot of star power, maybe too much, but that's

my Star Trek The Next Generation cast. So, you

guys, maybe I went, where did I go wrong with

that? You guys are giving me - No, I think it's

good. I mean, I'm not a huge Star Trek fan, but

my thing is, like, what, it's kind of on the

nose, but what about doing James Baxter Boy as

a - Thought about it, you know, it's kind of

cheating because he's kind of already played

Patrick Stewart already Right. I thought about

it. But yeah, I just got try to go somewhere

else. I also thought about Paul Dano as As data

as well. Yeah, I can see that so Amanda you're

still staring at me blankly. So just move on

to whatever your second movie is the postman

I'm going to do a live action Disney's A Little

Mermaid. I know that that was kind of being tossed

around. It's not done yet though. Nothing's cast

or anything. First off I'm going to start with

Prince Eric. Let's go with Liam Hemsworth since

John Stamos was too old now. To follow that one

up with Triton played by older Hemsworth, Chris

Hemsworth, but maybe made to look slightly older.

Not to look like his two year older brother.

Yeah. I think they look different enough to play

different characters, but I think they fit in

those characters pretty well. And then Ariel,

I think Isla Fisher. I think her looks, her voice,

I think she has kind of that childish demeanor,

but she can kind of get serious at the same time,

too. I think she has a little bit of that innocence

that you need to have in Ariel, but definitely

I think that she can be strong in her own right,

too. And then my final casting is Ursula. I think

Bandy Newton, some sweet -ass CGI can be a bomb,

Ursula. She's actually in... One of the, um,

Chronicles of Rennick movies. And she's not a

nice person. And I think that she played a pretty

cool sinister person. I think she'd be awesome

as Ursula. So no, uh, no flounder? Or, uh...

You know, I didn't... Flotsam and jetsam? I didn't

know how deep I should go. And I'm like, this

is gonna take a while to cast voices. So would

it be musical or would it be more like the...

live action just adaptation? I'm not really cool

on straight musicals. I think there could be

some music in there if you wanted. You know how

this year when we had Cinderella I mean it had

a couple touches of music but it wasn't like

in the woods or whatever so maybe a mix. I just

I couldn't get past I thought about I'm like

well who would play the voice of Sebastian but

I can't I can't get past how awesome the original

was. Wave Brady. Yeah, the original is hard.

You'd have to have almost like, if you were going,

you'd have to go, I don't know. It had to be

like Ziggy Marley or something, I don't know.

Alright, so live action, Little Mermaid beating

them to it. Trying to get this one out before

that so we could have competing ones, whether

they want a green light, whichever one's being

rumored, or if they want yours instead. They

should want mine instead. It's got both Hemsworths.

That's all you need. You should do a face -off

with the Hemsworths. How did I know you were

going to get a Hemsworth or a Tatum in one of

your films? I got Jack Courtney and both Hemsworths.

Alrighty. Dan, what do you have for your second

film? promote was that my personal movie that

was obviously quickly uh... destroyed when it

came out this one was actually and not are nominated

for best picture and i think uh... though some

might find that surprising i think we should

be make godfather no chugging uh... uh... don't

do that uh... but no it's actually uh... you

know there were some classic disaster films in

the seventies and You know some of them don't

hold up all that well, but one I think has potential

to be something kind of cool Is that of the towering

inferno? Starring in back in the day it started

like two of the biggest stars of that time which

were Paul Newman and Steve McQueen You know great

actors, you know Hollywood icons all both in

the same film about basically just a movie building

burning down. I know like in today's day and

age of disaster movies are a lot bigger and bolder

than that but I think there is something to say

about just having some fire on the top of a building

and trying to work your way down and especially

with our technology today I think it could look

really cool even something that could work in

like 3D with some of the sequences they had in

the original film like looking trying to escape

from the top of the building coming down so I

think that would be kind of cool and I think

it was like who can do this you know Ian McQueen

and Paul Newman in the original so you need two

you know actors in their prime two actors that

are highly respected so these are two actors

that I feel like are every time a movie comes

up they get nominated or they get people talking

about them being in it and that's Tom Hardy and

Michael Fassbender uh I figured you know them

together in a film would work. They're obviously

not similar to that of a queen or Paul Newman,

but I think they're both notable and, like I

said, highly respected, so it would be kind of

cool to see them in this, and they could lead

credibility to what would just be a disaster

film. And again, I was thinking about director.

Oh, I should also mention someone else I thought

would be in this would be great, would be Emily

Blunt. As kind of, you know, as a... Thinking

like a female paramedic or something of that

nature just to add in a little bit different

of a flare as well So and then the director I

was thinking of Matt Reeves who has history of

Doing remakes, you know, he did let me in which

was the remake of left the right one in he was

the director of dawn of the planet of the earth

dawn of the planet of the apes and then also

he has just redoing disaster films because he

directed Cloverfield. So I feel like he has the

repertoire and the experience to kind of handle

something like this. So I thought he would bring

it all together. There's no chance that doesn't

get greenlit. Maybe. Maybe. Michael Fassbender

and Tom Hardy maybe. I don't know why people

don't like disaster movies. So that might be

the one thing that holds people back. But I think

it would be kind of cool to see great actors

in a disaster film. That's what actually gonna

be called just gonna be called a fast measure

effect. That's what the name of the bill is All

right for my last film I'm kind of going with

the one that's for the most part I guess triggered

the idea for me of doing this in the first place

and I've talked about one of the castings of

this already before probably on multiple shows

but or on Twitter or Facebook or something so

obviously we're in the day and age of 80s remakes

or movies of properties that were born in the

80s we've had obviously disasterous run with

transformers films we've had a couple g .i. joe

films we've had uh... terrible teenage mutant

ninja turtles film last year so why not wreck

the last one but since i'm in charge i'm going

to try to save it so uh... the one i'm talking

about would of course be masters of the universe

he -man And let's just start with the obvious

one, and I think this should just get the project

greenlit, and I shouldn't have to say anybody

else, and that is Amanda, your man, Chris Hemsworth

as He -Man. You totally stole this from me because

when we watched it, I'm like, if I really made

this movie, it would be Chris Hemsworth all the

way. Oh, I've thought this since I saw Thor.

I'm like, there's nobody that's ever been more

perfect to play He -Man than Chris Hemsworth.

Can you just say that there's never been anybody

more perfect than Chris Hemsworth one more time?

No. We could make Liam Hemsworth play Adam, his

alter ego, so he doesn't look quite as buff,

but no. Chris Hemsworth would be playing He -Man,

and then I was in a world where I was trying

to come up, for days I've been trying to come

up with who would play the supporting cast, because

I had the first one. I had to come up with a

supporting cast, though, and I thought... I was

struggling for a long time and then I had like

a light bulb went off and I'm like where else

currently do you kind of see people that would

be in this world or of this kind of same type

of genre and I started thinking about Game of

Thrones and there was two people that perfectly

would come out of Game of Thrones and into the

Masters of the Universe and one of them would

be a guy named Liam Cunningham who played Davos

Seaworth in Game of Thrones and I think he would

be a perfect man -at -arms. So he would be the

general, so to speak, the strategist for He -Man

and kind of his advisor, so to speak. And then

the other one that would come out of Game of

Thrones would be Rose Leslie Egret. I don't know

if I say that name right, but the redheaded girl

that is... dealing with Jon Snow for a while

there in the one season. And she would play,

of course, Tila. So I think she's perfect. She's

got the red hair like Tila did in the cartoon.

She's kind of like somewhat of an athletic, agile

person. And she already shoots arrows and does

stuff like that. So I think she would fit in

with that. So that's kind of your three main

people, good guys, Chris Hemsworth, Liam Cunningham,

and Rose Leslie. And then to round that off,

I'm going to also add in the sorceress. And I

couldn't think of anybody better to play the

sorceress than Tilda Swinton. You need someone

to play a witch. You get Tilda Swinton. Right.

So Tilda Swinton would be the sorceress. I think

she just has that right balance of it's a good

character, but it's kind of there's something

else to it. There's a mysteriousness to it. And

then I decided also, since a lot of people also

know the series She -Ra, let's go ahead and throw

She -Ra in there. I don't know where she would

come into in the film or what part she would

join up. I know she's not blonde, but I thought,

just based off of a couple things that I've seen

her in, that Alicia Vikander would be a decent

She -Ra to match up with Chris Hemsworth as he

-man. So they would be the twins, I guess, so

to speak. Not that they look anything alike.

um... but of course you need a couple bad people

and the only two that i'm going to cast bad people

you mean villains? villains i wasn't coming up

with that word bad people but i'm only going

to come up with two of them and i'd have to leave

the rest i'm not going to try to do merman and

beastman and all these other ones i'm just going

to go with the one -two punch with Skeletor and

Evil Lynn and for Evil Lynn i was going to go

with uh... Marion Cotillard Because I feel like

she could pull that off pretty bad assly And

then it was down to Skeletor there was a bunch

of different ways I could have gone with this

and this was the one where I was tempted to just

cast the one from the the other live -action

film because I think I think Franklin Langella

was decent even if the writing of that film was

terrible And he's kind of that old and creepy

guy, but I wanted to go a different route since

we have Chris Hemsworth I wanted someone because

in the cartoon what you miss is that Skeletor

and He -Man are physically almost on par with

each other. Even though Skeletor is like a skeleton,

he's still super muscular and buff like Chris

Hemsworth. So I wanted to not go with the old

frail like skeleton looking guy, which I thought

with like Cillian Murphy might have made a good

one of those. Instead I'm gonna go with someone

just as buff probably as Chris Hemsworth, but

I think he could pull off the evilness of Skeletor

and that would be Jason Momoa. So and I guess

also from Game of Thrones, so I get I didn't

realize that until just now So Chris Hemsworth

and Jason Momoa going, you know, good guy bad

guy with that I think he could pull off the evil

look to kind of counter Chris Hemsworth good

look and I Don't know. That's what I have for

my Masters of the universe. What do you think

Amanda? It's intense Pretty intense. Yeah, I

think a couple good picks in there a Couple That's

quality through and through. I think Darrell

Seaworth, solid choice. That's solid. I mean,

I came out of that. I didn't know who was going

to be man -at -arms, and I found him finally.

And oh, I did have a director for this, and his

name is anybody except Michael Bay. I'd also

say producer, though, too, because you don't

want one of them. Yes, he can't be involved in

my project at all. So as casting director, I've

somehow got rights to veto any producers, directors,

et cetera. I do have a funny one that's not serious.

I wanted to make you laugh. Hopefully you'll

laugh at this. Maybe Dan will laugh. What about

the Princess Bride with Bradley Cooper as Wesley

and General Lawrence as Buttercups? Well, I mean,

they do have to be together. Thought about Princess

Bride and I couldn't convince myself to remake

it even if I was in charge of the casting I was

like, I just can't do it. That's why I don't

want this is my serious one Oh man, so those

are the six films that you guys can decide to

greenlight or to throw on the trash heap Dan

What do you think so far of our first venture

into this fantasy filmmaker? I think we've made

better movies and we talked about in news. So

yeah Amanda who's got the best cast going? What's

the best idea? Oh, I'm gonna go with... Jeez,

it's a hard pick between Masters of the Universe

and Spawn. If I'm not picking my own, because

fucking Waterworld would be winning. Some fucking

jet skis, whatever. You got that new cool thing

that you put on your feet. It's like a water

jet pack that can totally be incorporated. All

kinds of cool stuff. I'm surprised you didn't

have Keanu out there. Alright so you have to

let us know I mean it's not a competition amongst

ourselves we just want to see which projects

you give the green light to and if you guys like

this or not we can do it again in the future

if you thought it was stupid let us know and

we'll never do it again as going into the next

section we'd like to take a brief moment to talk

about what we've been watching and Amanda let's

start with your most recent theater experience

that I was not involved with we did the I called

it a split date. I don't know. That was awkward.

You made it weird. We went to the movies and

we each saw a different film. So we went to the

movies and then we split off, even though it

was kind of like a movie date. And she went and

watched Sinister 2. So tell us about Sinister

2. And did you like it? Not like it? What grade

would you give it? All that? The grade that I

give it is a seven and a half out of 10. I think

I enjoyed it. Re -watched the first sinister

to see how it you know matched up with or it

would match up with the second Installment here,

and I think sinister to used a lot of the same

scares As the first one It relied pretty heavily

on jump scare, but in the theater that works

I can't tell you how many times I accidentally

punched myself in the face trying to cover my

eyes super fast But I think that the kill movies,

like the home movies, they kind of stepped it

up a little bit with this one. Increased the

gore factor a little bit. And some of the ghost

transitions and things like that I think were

pretty cool. So I think they had a good execution.

Alright, so a recommendation of Sinister 2 for

those that like horror films? Yes, sir. Alright,

and while you were watching Sinister 2, down

the hall I was watching a walk in the woods with

Robert Redford and Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson,

and obviously the story of Robert Redford basically

plays this individual who decides to try to walk

the Appalachian Trail, which is... probably not

possible for someone of his age and ability at

that point and his wife played by Emma Thompson

tells me that he cannot go unless he finds someone

to go with him and after all of his other friends

turn him down someone he doesn't even invite

Nick Nolte old acquaintance calls him up and

they end up going on this adventure together

and I don't know if anyone's seen Nick Nolte

in the last five to ten years but you can picture

him trying to hike the Appalachian Trail and

figure out that there's going to be, obviously,

some humor involved in that. But I guess my main

takeaway from this film is, you know, I appreciated

Nick Nolte. I thought he was entertaining. I

think the acting was fine and the scenery was

great and everything. But it's just not something

that I haven't seen done already a dozen times

as far as, you know, trying to like find yourself

for the meaning of life or midlife crisis or

coming to terms with your aging process, et cetera.

So I guess I just couldn't recommend this over

a lot of other things. movies that have done

the same thing. I would probably give this one

a six out of ten, and I think that's being slightly

generous, but it's worth it just to see if Nick

Nolte can get through the whole thing without

having a heart attack. Which is something he

amazes me every day in real life. Dan, what about

you? What was something you've watched this week?

Well, I did check out Fantastic Four, the one

2015 Josh Trank film. Here. Brave, brave man.

Yeah, the highly acclaimed Fantastic Four. I

really think on the box, if Fox was... Had some

guts they would put on the box. It's like it's

not that bad like as the quote I think that's

kind of my takeaway is that That's kind of like

what I thought I'd like it's not that bad I wouldn't

put it as one of the worst comic book movies

like I think it's better than something like

Jonah Hex or Catwoman or Electra to me. It's

not nowhere near that level I mean it is has

issues with it it and I know a lot of people

saying it really kind of falls apart in the last

act and There like I think it would work really

well if you told me it was like a TV pilot I

think it would actually make it seem a lot better

especially the special effects would actually

look not nearly as bad in some instances, but

There are like elements. I did like I like the

idea of treating the idea of getting superpowers

almost as like a horrific act and there's one

scene where you kind of see Mr. Fantastic, you

know Reed Richards with his arms like extended

like on like an operating table and it's really

disturbing and I really like that image like

it looked kind of cool But you know that there

are things here and there the characters themselves

are super underdeveloped the relationships make

no sense and times and also hate the idea of

Really smart characters making really stupid

decisions with real little to no motivation Which

is kind of the whole reasoning behind them getting

their powers per se. It's like why they putting

themselves in a situation to begin with, it just

seems kind of illogical. So that was kind of

my problem, and the characters themselves seemed

a little ill -defined in their relationships.

no one has any chemistry at all, to the most

part, even like the actors. And I'm a huge Miles

Sillage fan, I've loved everything he's done

so far, but I think he just doesn't work as Reed

Richards. He never convinced me he was comfortable

in that role. He seemed just out of place, like

he just seemed like he wasn't able to convey

being this intelligent person or like, you know,

he... or the awkwardness never seemed to work

and it was it was kind of weird the way they

treated this character and took some of the decisions

he made it's almost like he was very unheroic

at times and i kind of get that but i again it

just they never really went anything and went

anywhere with it so it i think yeah you you could

see the like the framework of what could have

been a good movie but without like a strip script

that you know would fill in some of these issues

plot wise and character wise and with a finale

that just kind of just seems to come out of nowhere

and this is just like things just start happening

just because and once you have a villain that

can literally make people explode just by looking

at them it's like where like what and how do

you stop this guy like it makes no sense now

it's like like he can just do everything he can

so yeah it it has things i didn't hate it i didn't

like I was never bored, even though there wasn't

much action. I was just interested in the approach,

but the execution was pretty pathetic. Yeah,

I think what they did was good with the things

I didn't think they would do well with. I thought

they displayed the powers actually fairly well,

as far as what each one could do and their abilities.

I thought they showed that decent, but man, you

hit the nail on the head there with... The character

development and the decisions made with no motivation

or it doesn't make sense towards that character,

especially involving Dr. Doom. That was one of

the worst handled characters I think I've seen

in a long time as far as a superhero film. And

spoiler alert, I guess, for Fantastic Four, so

don't listen if you haven't seen it and you're

really dying to see it. But the climactic battle

scene is... So rushed and so like they each try

individually and fail So then they try together

and it's like first time success movie over like

What is going on with that? And I just I just

didn't understand that at all But I do question

you saying that you've liked everything that

miles teller has ever done Because I think you're

blocking out the divergent series. Oh Yeah, I

forgot he was in the yeah, he's also in the remake

of The remake of Footloose too, but he actually

wasn't too bad He was actually kind of fun in

that movie. But yeah, he that's a good point.

I see incorrect All right. What score would you

give Fantastic Four? Oh, man, I'd probably give

it like a four or three four out of ten Amanda

what did you give that one? Let's just give the

Fantastic Four a four. There you go. Makes sense.

So three fours for the Fantastic Four from us

for 2015 not rave reviews, but Like Dan said

it's not The worst film that's come out this

year or the worst superhero film I don't think

there was definitely elements there that could

have worked It just seemed like they rushed through

a bunch of stuff and there was no character development

whatsoever in that film. So Alright, let's see

Amanda. Did you have one other one that you wanted

to talk about? I know we saw You want to talk

about the one from? On demand that we saw that

you cared about quite a bit and I liked even

more I guess I can give my thoughts on Z for

Zachariah. The grade that I gave it was an 8

out of 10. I think that this was a really intriguing

film. I think that some of Margot Robbie's motivations

behind what she did were confusing and I didn't

really follow her process very well. But I think

that the... I don't remember, Dan hasn't seen

this. I'm trying to be spoiler -free. I think

that the whole triangle that's going on between

the three characters really had me hooked from

the get -go. I think that the setup for the film,

too, how you don't get so much information is

also really intriguing. I might have wanted a

little bit more. I don't need like a whole backstory

or like newspaper clippings from you know the

fallout or whatever happens but I would have

liked to know a little bit more of what happened

and where everybody went but as far as this movie

gives you a lot of innuendo and hint and it's

so much is done with just the looks of the characters

give each other that It's it's really fun watch.

I think the acting performances in this movie

are pretty hard to beat all three people do phenomenal

jobs I'm not going to go into it too much if

you want to hear my thoughts in depth Check out

the latest true bromance podcast episode where

high row Barry and I go into great detail Into

this they were trying to keep the episode at

an hour or so, and I think we ended up at like

two hours. And if you get them talking about

Margot Robbie, there's no way. But my grade for

this was 9 out of 10. It's one of my favorite

films of the year so far. I know I'm higher on

it than most, but I really, really enjoyed Z

for Zachariah. So definitely glad we checked

that out on demand. Dan, what else did you see?

I also saw a documentary that's currently now

streaming on Amazon Prime. It's actually one

I'm kind of looking forward to checking out,

and I think it's one you might like as well,

Kevin. I'm not sure about Amanda. And that is,

it's called I Am Big Bird. It's the story of

the Carol Spivey story. And it's interesting

because what's kind of intriguing about it is

that it's a documentary that is kind of void

of controversy and high drama. It's not like

he lives a life that is you would be unexpected

or one that is supremely complicated. But I think

what makes it work is that it's just this guy

with this unique passion and these kind of moralistic

ideals that I find intriguing. kind of a welcome

change of pace to just watch a movie about what

is legitimately just a kind of a nice man, like

a cool dude, and his story behind it. And there

are some struggles here and there for sure. You

can see how, you know, with the increasing of

characters like Elmo, how you see him not nearly

getting the recognition as he once was, and kind

of him trying to come to grips of becoming Big

Bird and what that... undertook but overall those

stories are really few and far between it's just

just kind of what he did and it's kind of a snapshot

of the man behind one of the most iconic characters

ever it's not particularly deep per se but There

is this nice little storyline about him and like

a kind of reunion near the end, which is kind

of little heartwarming So I would definitely

recommend it there is like a similar draw and

documentary about which is now really kind of

tainted about the guy who did was behind Elmo

and I think this is along the same lines, but

a little bit better just because it it just seems

to Really give you a better idea of who this

person is as a person. So Yeah, I think there's

a lot of interesting stuff actually in the world

of the Muppets if you kind of go back into and

I think that's a rich history with with Carol

as well as with Frank Oz Jim Henson and a few

of those other Jerry Nelson and a couple of those

other people that basically were around for Three

four decades doing that stuff. I think there's

a lot to it and there's a lot of interesting

stuff that goes behind the scenes with those

shows. I heard about this as soon as I actually

heard about it as it was being made and et cetera,

but I have not had a chance to check it out,

but I definitely will. What grade would you give

this one? I'd probably give it about a 7 out

of 10. Specifically, it's not groundbreaking

in that end. It's a nice watch. It's not going

to give you something you're not expecting, I

would say, but if you have interest in the subject

matter, I think you enjoy it. All right, we had

one that is actually not from 2015 that I think

we both wanted to touch on briefly here, and

that would be our first watch of the 2012 film

Seven Psychopaths. We saw that recently on Netflix

or Amazon, on Amazon, streaming for free there

if you have Prime. And man, this was... a fun

film, I think is the best way for me to put it.

I'm obviously starring Colin Farrell, Christopher

Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Amanda,

I'll let you go first, but what was your takeaway

from Seven Psychopaths from Martin McDonough?

It was fun. I had a really good time with it.

It was one that I kept playing the guessing game

with. Um, trying to really figure everything

out that was going on. Um, it was something that

you could kind of, um, think your way through,

but you didn't have to think too much. It also

put a lot in your face as far as like action

and, um, some comedic moments and, um, some pretty

awesome performances from a kind of star -studded

cast. So I would give it like a seven and a half

eight. I, yeah, maybe it's just because we're

doing the Tarantino retrospective, but this is

definitely something that is very much kind of

taking some things from what Tarantino has done.

Like, it had a little bit of that feel as you

kind of go throughout the film. But, man, I actually

really enjoyed this. I'd probably even give it

a little bit higher than you. I'd probably give

it up to a seven and a half, eight, maybe eight

out of 10. I just said that. I thought you said

seven, seven and a half. Well, I'm straight I'm

soundly at eight then But yeah, I thought this

was hilarious at times Some head dialogue was

was hilarious some of that just random things

It's described as a black comedy crime metafilm

and I guess I'm a fan of those So eight out of

ten for me Dan. Have you seen seven psychopaths?

Yeah, I was in my top ten comedies of the decade

so far That's right. I knew it was. I knew I'd

heard you say it on one of those lists. I just

couldn't remember which one it was. But yes,

I mean, we missed out by not having seen it before

that probably because it might have made my list

for sure. Dan, you saw another documentary as

well, correct? Yeah, I saw one more and it's

interesting you and Trooper Romance because I

think they actually interviewed the director

of this one and it's Dogfight, which is also

currently streaming on Netflix. And I overall

enjoyed it. I do think it's, for those that don't

know, it's a movie about kind of this, you know,

a backyard fight culture. taking place in Florida.

The main character of this guy called Dada 5000

and he was like a bodyguard for Kimbo Slice and

it's kind of like the... Why did Kimbo Slice

need a bodyguard? I don't know, I guess that's

a good question. But that's kind of the part

of it too where it's like he worked with Kimbo

Slice but he says he was actually a better fighter

than him and we never got his break and so it's

this guy but he ends up putting on like a promotion

in like his mom's or aunt's backyard and it's

just like you know unsanctioned fighting going

on and people have... That's kind of how Kimball

slices got discovered and other fighters have

also got discovered from this backyard fighting

and become professional fighters so it kind of

goes into it and I I guess my one my biggest

complaint is that I wish it focused more on the

fighters and less on the fights because there

there are times where you are watching the entire

fight take place and there's a lot of them and

the thing is like At a point you're just watching

bad fighting or you're just watching amateur

fighting and I as someone who's not I mean, I

enjoy MMA to a certain extent, but at a point,

I'm like, I'd rather know who that person is

before you got to that point. And you get little

tidbits here and there. I just thought they could

really go in more depth, or also just... there

is i think other things to explore here regarding

how the the community itself used this fighting

or the police because there are some like uh

there's like a relationship with the police where

at times it seems like they actually feel like

it's a good thing for the community or is it

really or even getting an opinion of those that

are in the professional ranks of backyard fighting.

There's one person who does give something, but

I think there's an interesting idea that where

they're saying they shouldn't be doing it, but

yet they're still getting people from these fights

to then headline. So it just seemed kind of to

be kind of hypocritical on that end. But I think

it turns around in the second half where it ends

up. changing focus a little bit where it does

get the idea we're just focusing on the Dota

5000 and his story, which I think it increases

it. So I do like documentaries that focus on

subcultures and this does that, but like I mentioned,

the thing that hinders it for me is just exploring

it a little bit further. I just actually listened

to that interview that they did with the director.

What score would you give this one, Dan? I would

give it a six out of 10. Have you seen any of

his other documentaries? I have seen Cocaine

Cowboys, which is a great documentary. I'd give

that 8, 9 out of 10. It does what it doesn't.

It could be more of a budget issue with Dogfight

because it seems like they didn't have much of

one, which could be the reasoning behind it,

but Cocaine Cowboys is quite the interesting

story too. I don't think we're going to go over

too much more, but I do want to at least allow

us to give grades on the other films that we've

seen from 2015 in case people are keeping up

with that. I don't think we talked about the

gift, but Amanda, what score would you have given

the gift? I really enjoyed the gift. I gave it

an 8 out of 10. And I would probably be slightly

under that. Probably like a seven out of ten

for me, but I still thought out of all the crap

That's out in the theater right now that it was

a decent bright spot. I guess you could say we

also saw Aloha, and I gotta say I'm somewhat

in agreement with JD from in session I think

people may have been a little overly harsh on

it. I don't think it's a great film by any means

I think me personally I would probably give it

a Six out of ten five and a half out of ten.

I mean, I don't think it was utter crap Like

everybody seemed to say it was what would you

give that one? I think I was pleasantly surprised

surprised by this film I I liked it a lot more

than I thought I was going to it's definitely

not the genre that I Normally am attracted to

but I give it a seven out of ten Alright, and

then you had already seen it and talked about

it earlier in the year, but I just recently caught

up with it follows I actually did it. You know

it's it's the type of I guess quote -unquote

horror film that that's not too bad for me I

don't know if I'd go as far as some people were

going about it, and calling it maybe the best

film on their halfway year list and things like

that. I'm not quite as high as everybody else

on it, but I still would probably give it a 7

out of 10, so I still think it was good. What

did you give it, Follows Beckham? I think 8 out

of 10. And then two final ones that we saw. We

saw Spring based on the recommendation from our

friends Hiro and Barry at the True Bromance podcast.

They were ranting and raving about Spring and

they had checked it out on Netflix or Amazon

and they said everybody else should do that too

and we're like we usually agree with these cats

so we'll check it out and we watched it and Amanda

what would you give Spring? I don't even know,

I'm gonna say three and a half, four, but I fell

asleep, so I don't even know what the ending

was. I think I really should have tried to stay

awake harder than I did to see the end, but from

what I was seeing, I just wasn't with it. It

seemed cool, it was a cool idea, but I just couldn't

get enough of what I was digging out of it to

stay into it. And I will match you and go with

a 3 out of 10 for that. I don't quite see what

Barry and Hiro saw in that film. So maybe I just

missed it. And then the final one that we saw

from this year that was getting all kinds of

great reviews as well was Clouds of Sils Maria

and Amanda. I'll let you go first again. I gave

this one a 3 out of 10 as well simply because

Kristen Stewart actually was in a role that I

enjoyed her in. I thought that she actually did

pretty well. Everything else, I didn't give a

shit about in this movie. I could not stay with

it. There was nothing relatable to me. I just...

I couldn't get motivated to finish this film.

I mean, it's got a lot working for it, and it

has a lot of potential, I think, and it sets

things up in a way that you're... I was at least

invested in it. Like, I was... Interested to

see where it was going. I was following it I

wanted to see you know what was gonna transpire

between these characters and what was gonna happen

and what kind of a Commentary they were making

on You know the art that they're commentating

on but I just felt like completely let down by

the end of the film I just It may be if the last

half hour the last act would have been different

I would have you know put this in a 7 -8 range

if it was like super great at the end and left

me with like some type of moment of Inspiration,

but I just felt completely let down by the last

20 to 30 minutes So I'm gonna also give this

one. I'll give it a 4 out of 10 So it's disappointed

in clouds of cells As fact as from the acting

standpoint and from the their ability to set

things up and keep me interested for the most

part until that last 20 minutes I was at least

entertained. I wasn't it wasn't like I hated

my experience I just was disappointed with what

they did with everything that they had set up

and I was hoping for something more at the end

so So that is it for the films we saw from 2015

and 2012 2012 and in the case of the 7 cycle

pass This is the time where we usually take a

look forward at what's coming out and usually

we only pick one thing But I think we're gonna

do it a little bit different this time. We're

gonna pick one thing that we can buy And then

one movie we can go see. So let's start with

the Blu -ray releases for this next Tuesday coming

up. We have a whole bunch of different stuff.

So it depends, I guess, on what route, what direction

you want to take. We have a bunch of TV seasons

coming out for comic book fans. You have Agent

Carter coming out on Blu -ray season one, Agents

of S .H .I .E .L .D. season two, and The Flash

season one. So you can go with one of those.

We got some 40th anniversaries with Rocky Horror

Picture Show and Dog Day Afternoon, if you want

to get an anniversary collection Blu -ray. We

got the Robin Williams, I guess, memorial Blu

-ray coming out here with the Jumanji. Then we

have another childhood favorite for some, the

Indian in the Cupboard, current hit, no, current

letdown, Pitch Perfect 2 combo pack. You got

Zathura. Space Adventure or you can go with the

Criterion collection. We had Breaker Morant I'm

probably saying that wrong. Mr. Johnson and Moonrise

Kingdom on Criterion collection Dan if you could

only buy one of those things on that list, which

would you purchase? I'd go dog day to afternoon

because I love that would be so That's all right

going Amanda. What are you buying? Alright, I'm

torn. I did like Moonrise Kingdom, but I'm gonna

copy Dan and go with Dog Day Afternoon 40th Anniversary

because I think that would be the right version

of that. Yeah, I already owned Moonrise Kingdom,

so it's kind of a cheat, so. Right. Alright,

and then we talked about it already a little

bit, but now we can only pick one. So theater

releases right now, we got Pawn Sacrifice, which

is currently getting an 82 % on Rotten Tomatoes.

Black Mass, which is at 84. Everest, which is

at 76. Captive which does not have enough ratings

to have a number. Sicario which is at an astounding

94 and Maze Runner at 61. Amanda which one are

you going to see? You can only see one. Sicario.

She's going to see Sicario. Dan, what about you?

I've been actually trying to make this decision

and I work down to this. I think Sicario is probably

be the best movie, but I feel like the one that

would benefit most from a theater experience

would probably be Everest, so I'm leaning towards

that. I'm not saying it would be the best movie,

but I think seeing that in IMAX would be kind

of cool. You make a good argument there, Dan.

Definitely make a good argument for the movie

going experience. It is probably the one that

you get the most out of from the big screen.

I'm agreeing with Amanda on the fact that Sicario

looks like it's probably going to be the best.

But damn it, I'm intrigued to see what Johnny

Depp does and if he falls on his face or not.

So I'll try to be different and I'll go see Black

Mask so we can all come back and report on our

individual films. So all right, let's see. Anything

else that we need to talk about movie -wise,

Amanda, before we close the show up for this

week? I don't think so. Dan, anything movie -related

you've got to get off your chest? Ah, not at

the moment in time, no. Alright, so reminder

to go check out the latest Tarantino episode

and help us vote on which director we will do

next. You only have a limited amount of time

to vote on that, so please do. And then look

out for our final episode where we kind of do

some fun Tarantino stuff and let you know on

which director will be the winner of that poll.
