CINEMA GEEKS
Barely Lethal and Prince Avalanche Review

About this Episode
Starscream here, and I am the lord and master
of the Geekcast radio network. Don't tell Megatron.
Today on episode 67 of The Cinema Geeks, we react
to a heavy dose of Star Wars news and rumors.
We discuss what could be next in the Nightmare
on Elm Street, Alien, and Predator franchises.
We react to the trailers for Life, Victor Frankenstein,
The Martian. And the hateful eight. And we go
over two weeks worth of what we've been watching,
including our thoughts on Straight Outta Compton,
Fifty Shades of Grey, and Terminator Genisys.
All that and more coming up on episode 67 with
The Cinema Geek. That's right. It's episode 67
and we are the cinema geeks. I am one of your
cinema geeks Kevin optimists solo and joining
me as Usual is movie revolt Dan. Hello. Hey,
how's it going? Not too bad and our third cinema
geek at Hard Candy Mandy. Hello. What happened?
And we're back. We kind of gave you a extra long
Super special episode last time a mega sized
episode that I think ran uh... to point some
than hours so uh... without you guys might need
a couple weeks to digest that one so outside
of giving you are quentin tino episodes uh...
we kind of had a week off of the regular show
also gave you guys are ample time to get your
votes in on who had the best film time capsule
and we'll go over that a little bit later give
you give a little bit a little bit more time
for people get their last second votes and not
that they can do it now because this is a recording
but um and then we'll go over that towards the
end but as we start every weekend just before
we get to the box office i'll give you guys a
little heads up we're not going to do necessarily
a main attraction so to say this week We have
kind of two weeks worth of headlines and trailers
and everything that Dan and Amanda and myself
have been watching over the last couple weeks.
So we're going to just get into all of that and
try to keep your runtime of this episode a little
bit lower than the last one. So it won't be a
main attraction, but we'll be back next time
with something special for you guys. So a couple
weeks ago we did make some box office predictions.
I don't know if you guys remember what they are,
but I do. And it was a good week for our predictions.
Last time we recorded, Dan, you had the first
Rotten Tomatoes prediction. Yes, I predicted
that. I thought Man of Uncle would score rotten,
but I was incorrect. You said it would receive
higher than 50, though. I said it was in between
50 and 60 percent. I thought it would be rotten,
but not very much so. So I was right for a little
bit and then not so much anymore. What's it currently
at, do you know? I will pull it up real quick.
See how close you are. Because you were darn
close there for a while. And then Amanda and
I both had box office predictions. Amanda had
Fantastic Four coming in in the second place
spot, which it did. And I had Mission Impossible,
Rogue Nation. staying at the number one spot,
which it did. It is currently at sixty -six percent.
Not just six percent off. Four or five reviews
and I would have gone my way. Right. And then
as far as what happened in the last weekend,
since we didn't make predictions for it, we'll
still go over kind of what the status was kind
of to set the stage for whatever we're going
to be. making predictions this week and came
coming in at number one smashing the box office
this last weekend the previous weekend was straight
out of Compton bringing in sixty million dollars
in its first opening weekend Mission Impossible
dropped down to the second spot bringing in 17
million the man from uncle was the third spot
in its opening weekend with 13 million I think
somewhat disappointing for those behind that
project. Fantastic Four took the leap down to
the fourth spot, fittingly, and pulled in $8
million, just giving it just over $40 million
so far in two weeks. And then the gift. came
in at the number five spot with six million so
anything from this past weekend that stood out
for you Dan or anything that's shaping your prediction
for next week? I just wanted to make note that
just to talk about how big of a failure Fantastic
Four really is and and that's the fact that currently
in 13 days it's made 45 million dollars in 13
days Green Lantern made 94 million dollars and
people thought Green Lantern was like a bomb
so it's like twice the bomb. of Green Lantern,
so just to put in perspective of that much. And
that's with a good cast, and man. Yeah, yeah.
And also, which is kind of weird, but 2015's
already shaking up to be a pretty big year for
movies. And did you know, I didn't realize this
until now, or a few weeks ago, but Furious 7,
just looking at year -wise, if Furious 7 came
out last year, it would be the number one movie
of the year. of 2014. So the top three movies
this year have all made more money than anything
that came out last year, which is kind of crazy.
And like I said a couple months back, this definitely
is going to be a record -setting year when we
get everything said and done. The only question
is, will it eke out a few more 200 million mark
to break that record too? But it's already going
to have the most films to make 300, 400, and
500 million, I think, ever. So it's kind of crazy.
I think you had it right though, Dan, on your
last episode of Talking in Circles. I think you
mentioned it on for Fantastic Four. Apparently
the only people that are going to see that are
people that had to go see it to review it. Exactly.
The only people that are watching it are people
who reviewed it and that's about it. And maybe
the cast. And that's only because they were forced
to. It was funny listening to you guys because
especially on Talking in Circles, you guys are
all very much in tune with... comic books and
superheroes, etc. And listening to all three
of you just completely not even show a 1 % interest
in watching that film was very telling. Yeah,
no, not at all. And like I said, I've been a
champion of the film because I thought it would
be good. I thought I had a lot of faith in the
cast and director. I haven't seen it, so I can't
say if it's as bad as people say, but that kind
of shows you. Just the marketing, the trailers
have just... Uh, we're so dull to me. I didn't
even bother. I'm like, I'll wait. I'll waste
my money to go see a movie I probably not going
to like. Yeah, that is for sure. It currently
holds an 8 % on Rotten Tomatoes. That is... That's
hard to do. That's legitimately difficult to
do. Like, I think, you know, Paul Blart had the
higher... A six. He had a six at some point.
It's competing with Paul Blart. Yeah, yeah. That
tells us something. man and i do think though
sometimes there are those movies that people
have their claws out for and they're just ready
to hate and i think fantastic four was one and
uh lone certain not much fire but uh the lone
ranger was a last year two years ago i thought
that was a movie too that like it got they got
killed but i didn't think it was nearly as bad
as people made it out to be i didn't think it
was a good movie but i think there's sometimes
that happens where it's just we we want that
like the bomb of the summer and once it just
gets piled on so Yeah, it's definitely joining
a very mixed last couple months because we've
had a whole bunch of bombs as far as Rotten Tomatoes
go, and we've had a bunch of certified freshmen.
This is kind of interesting because we've had
Fantastic Four tanked, Vacation tanked, Pixels
got terrible reviews. But we do have some very
favorable Rotten Tomatoes scores for Mission
Impossible, Straight Outta Compton, Ant -Man,
and even The Gift, which surprised me. Like I
said, it's sitting at 93%, which I did not predict
early on in the year when I saw the first...
trailer or spot for that. Definitely a little
bit of everything out there. Amanda, what are
you thinking for as far as looking back at this
last week? Any surprises straight out of Compton
that held off Man From Uncle and Mission Impossible
take the number one spot? No, I'm not surprised
by that at all. I mean, it was a great movie.
I think the marketing and kind of the target
audience plus everybody who was outside the target
audience that still found themselves interested
in the story, I think it definitely paid off.
And I know that there's a lot of buzz around
it, so it doesn't really surprise me what the
lineup was here on the box office. Yeah, I think
there's a lot of people that were super familiar
with the content that wanted to see more about
it, and then there was a lot of people, you know,
I heard JD on In Session talking about it, and
it kind of fits for me, too, of someone that
knew who the people were. and maybe knew a couple
songs or some of the stuff, but didn't really
know anything about the story or the group or
anything that went into it. So, you know, we
were intrigued, you know, just to more of like
an almost an educational standpoint of finding
out what all happened. So I think it's appealing
to a lot of different groups. Who wants to go
first for a prediction for next week? We have,
as far as releases go, we have Sinister 2, we
have Hitman Agent 47, And we have American Ultra,
as far as I guess those would be the names. And
it's a cavalcade of amazing films this weekend,
isn't it? Actually, I'm going to go with kind
of a random prediction. And I'm going to try
to figure out, I'm hoping I can even figure out
if this is true or not, but this is going to
be my guess. And that is, this will be the worst
weekend box office wise of the year so far. Just,
you know, straight out of Compton, I feel like
it'll drop 50 % because typically that's what
happens. So it'll still be, but I think everything
else coming this year, coming out this week seems
to be, you know, not very buzzed about. Like
I think the highest thing in Rotten Tomatoes
is like 20%. And I just, people are going back
to school, you know, August has a slowdown to
begin with. So my guess, my prediction is this
is the worst box office weekend of the year so
far. I'm going to piggyback off of that because
my prediction was actually very similar. I'm
going to be the fool though and actually put
a number on it. He'll probably oust me on that
one. I could have gone something easy and said,
like, Trainwreck's going to pass 100 million
because it's at 97 right now. But I'm actually
going to go with a combination total of the top
five at the box office this last weekend. And
it's going to be very similar to what you're
saying, Dan, with a very bad weekend. And my
prediction is going to be that if you combine
the top five this weekend at the box office,
it's going to be less than 55 million total.
Wow. Brave, right? Yeah, so less than 55 million
total if you combine all of the top five films
just from this next weekend. So that would definitely,
I think, I haven't checked the numbers to see
if that would place it at the worst weekend,
but it has to be. If it's not, I don't remember
a weekend being that bad. So, Amanda, what are
you thinking? I am going to lock down the top
five, I think. So... Sinister 2, I believe, is
going to come in at number 1. We're going to
put Hitman, Agent 47, number 2. Think Man from
Uncle is going to hold the number 3 spot. Mission
Impossible is going to hold number 4. And then
Fantastic 4 will bring in number 5. No. Straight
out of Compton. Oh, I meant straight out of Compton.
No, look. Let's put straight out of Compton still
at number 1. So then Sinister's 2. Hitman's 3.
Man From Uncles 4, Mission Impossible is going
to be 5, so I think Handstick 4 is going to drop
out of the top 5. Alright, so that is, like we've
been saying, it's a stellar list of movies to
see. If you've already seen a couple of the good
ones, there's not much to see right now. You'll
have to try to catch The Gift, I guess, or Mr.
Holmes, or something that's only playing on one
theater screen, wherever you're going to see
your movies. Dan, any other commentary as far
as Box Office Rotten Tomatoes go? I got nothing.
All right, so and like Dan said the the numbers
are not good for the stuff that's coming out
hum at all so Just choose wisely I guess folks
when you're when you're going to the theater
this weekend. Yeah, maybe don't go Save your
money and wait to see some of these because you're
about to enter a season where you're gonna want
to see a whole bunch of film so Maybe maybe save
that for the next time out there because yeah,
like you said Hitman currently has a 6 % on Rotten
Tomatoes Whatever, I'm excited for that, I think
it was good Sinister 2 has a 4 and American Ultra
has a 39 Yeah, so Apparently only stoners vote
on Rotten Tomatoes Alright Alright, let's get
into the news. There's a whole bunch of it, so
we'll try to pick the best stuff here and some
stuff that I'm sure some of the people at GeekCast
Radio will be interested in. It's all about franchises
and reboots and sequels because everybody loves
talking about that stuff, right? Nope, nobody's
talking about it. Alright, let's start with Nightmare
on Elm Street because it was already rebooted
once, right? Yep, with Jackie O 'Haley as playing.
Yes, now we're gonna go for a second reboot so
Dan, what do you think? I mean, I'm not gonna
go into the article too much. I'm not super burst
on The whole nightmare on Elm Street franchise,
but getting a second reboot a good idea bad idea.
Well, I mean I don't know I think it's A bad
idea. I don't know it like horror films tend
to tend to every so often you get a decent reboot
here and there but uh the reboot that came out
a few years ago wasn't i don't think it was awful
it was it was okay it uh jackie earl hailey i
thought was a decent freddy he was a little bit
more sadistic and into that franchise kind of
got more comedic as it went on uh i don't know
i i feel like lot of these franchises are just
kind of coming on like everyone we've seen so
far tends to do poorly the friday the 13th the
halloween they try to keep them going but they're
just i don't think the audience is there as much
and i just think that they're not really coming
in winning with any new ideas you kind of get
stuck with just trying to recreate the old ones
so let it go i would say i would i would go thumbs
down we don't really need it i'm also not a huge
Nightmare on Elm Street fans. I don't know if
those that are would be excited to see it done
right again Maybe if they got back the original
guy who did Freddy maybe it'd be better Yeah,
I'm gonna echo that but like I said, I'm not
very very well versed in The franchise at all
nor am I a huge horror fan. I mean, I remember
somewhat I guess enjoying that one as a kid way
back when but I don't remember watching the first
reboot and I have no interest in seeing the second
one, but Amanda, you are a horror fan. Yes, sir.
So excited or not about this? I'm excited. I
didn't mind the reboot. I own it. I've rewatched
it several times. I think that Jackie was a great
Freddy. And I would even... not be opposed for
this reboot, this second reboot, to have him
in it again. I mean, I thought he was awesome.
I think it was everything else that was a little
watered down. I think it had some really cool
scenes, definitely, but I don't think that the
scare factor really lived up to the Nymer and
Elm Street name, so I just hope that they bring
the pain with this next one. Bring the pain.
Now, Dan... I remember you were on an episode
of, I believe it was True Bromance, when you
guys were talking about the best and the worst
movie weapons. And wasn't it Freddy's gloves
that came up on that? I can't remember. What
side of the debate were you on on that one? I
probably was on the pro side for it because they're
kind of like Wolverine's gloves. So I feel like
I'd be obligated to say they're good. Definitely
an interesting... I mean, not the most long -range
weapon, but I feel like it's effective in what
he's trying to do with it. It's just creepy.
Yeah, I agree. I always kind of that was one
of the appeals to me was his old get up with
the claws You know and you could use it to you
know, if you're have some toss a salad you got
you got it there. It's multi -purpose Yeah, it's
like you got to get him and Wolverine and Edward
Scissorhands all like in a room and see who's
Like a wreck it Ralph, yeah, they mean it like
a waterbed Take out their anger. Um, all right
moving on to the next headline for months, for
years. This guy has said that he had no interest
in this and he would not be involved. But now
we're getting the article here that Bill Murray
has confirmed an appearance in the Ghostbusters
reboot. What do you make of the 180 that he's
taken on here, Dan? Well, to be fair, he said
he wouldn't be in Ghostbusters 3. He didn't necessarily
say he wouldn't be in a reboot. So I guess maybe
that's the difference. I don't know. There's
a lot of crazy stories surrounding Bill Murray
and like how and when he says yes to projects
and how like he has this answering machine that
like you call and that and he listens to it occasionally
and apparently one time he Only said yes to a
project to do in Garfield because he thought
it was written by the Cohen brothers But it was
actually Joel Cohen who was not related to them
So there's all these crazy stories of why he
says yes to different things. So I mean, I'm
okay with it. Like I feel like that Ghostbusters
remake has been getting killed online for everything
it does but I mean who knows what it's gonna
be is it gonna be like a cameo where you can't
even tell who he is I know he talked about playing
wanting being a ghost is it gonna be something
like that so I mean maybe he just read the script
and he thought it was funny so and it's not by
Dan Aykroyd maybe that was the key I think that's
probably really what it's about So, yeah, it
looks like we're going to get a couple cameos
from the old guys. I mean, I don't think it can
be a bad thing. Amanda, will his cameo in Ghostbusters
be better or worse than his cameo in Zombieland?
Spoiler alert, my bad. I don't know if I can
judge that yet, not seeing it, but I feel like
Bill Murray could quite possibly be the king
of... cameos, and I really don't care what he's
doing in it. I just feel like he needs to be
a part of it. If he was a ghost and that was
his cameo, I think I would eat that up. Alright,
so you have to let us know if you're excited
or not for Bill Murray joining the crew. I don't
see how anybody would say necessarily that's
a bad thing, but so thumbs up from most of us
I believe on that. Going on to a headline that
I didn't think I would read as far as the reboots
and all this type of stuff, but... That's probably
why it's happening because it's always the stuff
that you would last choose to Have rebooted if
you were the one in charge. So Here's the article
Zac Efron in talks to join Dwayne the Rock Johnson
for Baywatch reboot Dan react No, no, no, um
Why God why But then I'm thinking about it. I'm
like, you know, Zac Efron was actually pretty
funny neighbors And I thought 21 Jump Street
when I heard about it was gonna be awful, and
that ended up being pretty good. So if this kind
of goes along the same lines as that, like more
comedic than taking it seriously, it could be
okay. And maybe The Rock, I could see like The
Rock and Zac Efron having good chemistry. I think
they're both, it can be funny at times. So I
think on paper, it's hard not to be a little
scared by it, but you know, I'd be optimistic
just based upon, you know, previous, like I said,
sneaking along the lines of 21 Jump Street. That's
what I was just going to ask, if you think it's
going to be a reboot along the same lines of
21 Jump Street, and kind of go that comedic route,
like you said, and like that humorous spin on
something that was, I mean, did anybody watch
that and think it wasn't humorous to begin with?
Are there die -hard Baywatch fans that took that
for real serious back then? Took it for serial?
No, the serious show was Baywatch Nights. That's
when they got serious. I find it interesting
that the first couple castings for this that
are making the headlines are both for the male
cast members of Baywatch since the original show
didn't... Did females watch the original show
at all or was that just for pre -pubescent boys?
I don't know. Are you admitting something there
Kevin? No, I had a couple classmates that were
obsessed with Baywatch and Pamela Anderson. I
don't even know if I've seen an entire episode
of Baywatch. Can you get hepatitis from watching
a TV show? I believe so. Well, this would be
the test. Amanda, what do you think of Baywatch
reboot or just the idea of maybe a comic, make
fun of Baywatch and then put The Rock and Zac
Efron in there? I think if they're going to do
it, it's going to be the comedic route just solely
based off of Efron coming out of Neighbors and
how well that did and that even getting a sequel.
And I think The Rock tends to put some kind of
humor. you know, in his own way and whatever
he does. So I think it's definitely going to
be a comedic reboot. But if it's anything along
the lines of 21 Jump Street, like you guys are
saying, I think it'll be golden. All right. Moving
on to the next one. I thought the Baywatch article
would be the worst article that I had to talk
about this week, but this one definitely one
ups it for me. And I'm just going to read it.
Word for word so that the listeners can kind
of react on their own and then we'll give them
a second and come back to this though. The article
reads, Godzilla movies writer promises bigger
and even better sequel. Yes, that is what we
said. So we're talking about a Godzilla sequel
and he's saying bigger and even better and...
We can only hope. Well, I mean it was... That
is literally saying something that would almost
be impossible not to follow through with I Don't
know I I question who this guy is talking to
or what circles he runs around and because in
the article and This is a quote the response
to the first film was really exciting I'm not
gonna continue with that line who was reacting
exciting to this film Dan was Did you like this
more than everybody else did? I liked it. I didn't.
I thought it was like most people. I thought
that the aspects of that with Godzilla and Bryan
Cranston were good and everything else. Aaron
Taylor and Johnson and whatnot was pretty bad.
But it did overall get a pretty positive reaction,
at least for the most part. I forget exactly
what it was like on Rotten Tomatoes, but there
were there were supporters, really strong supporters
who thought was quite good. I mean, it's not
like. you know uh the biggest and the best hit
of that year but it also did really well box
office wise so i think i you know maybe he just
uh he's some sort of blocker on his his his computer
where like all the bad reviews go away and he
just sees the positive but um that's not the
worst idea to do no no some people could it might
be a good idea maybe we can do it for itunes
i don't know um so i i guess i'm yeah man He
could have also just been you know, it's Been
really just talking about making it better than
last time I don't know but I don't I don't think
necessarily it was a movie that was hated upon
a great deal I mean it had his detractors, but
it was overall pretty Decently received much
better received than previous Godzilla films
at least It has 74 % on rotten tomatoes, that's
pretty good. It's a decent, you know, that's
a what a B minus Yeah, that's not bad at all.
That's actually higher than I thought it was.
I guess my other question to go along with this
article would be, are they going to make the
same mistake that a lot of other franchises make
and include too much in this sequel? Because
the last part of the article says that it suggested
that Rodan, Mothra, and I might say this wrong,
Ghidorah, would all appear in the sequel? Um,
I mean, I guess at least with if you're adding
in monsters You don't necessarily need to have
an origin story for them at least hopefully not
so maybe won't be as bad but I thought they couldn't
have some of those because the right to choose
or something like that, but uh Maybe that was
just rumors and speculation, but if it's less
Ellen Taylor Johnson and more monsters, I'm okay
with it I mean, I think maybe they found the
right formula because if you add More and more
monsters, you're just gonna be forced to have
more monsters on screen at some point so maybe
we'll have one fight in the daylight that'd be
nice maybe just one and maybe they won't have
to instead of cutting to humans during the middle
of it they'll have to cut to the other monsters
so it'll still be a win um amanda any excitement
over godzilla sequel no not really i didn't even
see the the other reboot, I guess we're going
to call it. I did not hate the Matthew Broderick
joint, though. I dug that. And the little babies
in Madison Square Garden. I was like, yeah, this
is awesome. But I did not see the this most recent
reboot. And just based on all the awful things
I heard about it, I'm like, I do care less. So
this one as well. I guess if this comes out,
I'll have to watch the other just to just compare
the. You'll be rewatching the first one on your
own. Re -watching? I haven't seen it. Or watching
the first one on your own. All right. Moving
on to the next article all about the Lego Batman
movie. First of all, Dan, before we get to the
article, what are the chances that the Lego Batman
movie is going to be on par with the Lego movie?
Or do you feel like it's automatically somehow
going to be a step down as far as reception and
success? Ah, since Phil Lord and, you know, Miller
are not attached to it, I think the possibility
is very low. And, you know, I felt like what
made Lego Movie great was the assortment of characters.
And if it's just Lego Batman, I don't know if
you're gonna get that. So I think the chances
of it being good is, I mean, better than or equal
to the original Lego Movie is near zero percent,
honestly. Not to be a negative answer, but I
don't, I don't, I know, I know. The chances that
TFG and Mike likes the Lego Batman... 120%, yeah.
Absolutely. Amanda, are you excited for Lego
Batman? I know you've played all the Lego video
games. I actually have not played Lego Batman.
Oh, that's the one that you haven't played. Or
Lego Star Wars, or Lego Dresden Park. Okay, I'm
just an idiot. So, as far as the movie though,
there's like a thousand Lego video games. That
was a dumb statement by me. There's no way anybody
could play them all. I have played several, yes.
excitement for the Lego Batman movie? Yeah, I
think that I really like the Lego movie. I don't
know if I like cream my pants as much as everybody
else did over it. I think this one might be super
fun though and just hearing all the voice cast.
Stop shaking your head. What did you just say?
I think just hearing all the voice castings that
are tied in this is getting me even more excited
about it. And Dan, the casting of Zach Galifianakis
as the voice of the Joker. What do you think?
Sure. Why not? I find funny about this movie,
though, is just the amount of hits, websites
you're getting off of it. Because just the naming
of the titles are very peculiar. Because it'll
be like, Zach Galifianakis cast as Joker in a
really small plant. in the lego batman movie
but you know though it's like yeah let's just
try to yeah i think i don't know i like i like
zac galifianakis i know like he gets kind of
uh pigeonholed because of his role in hangover
but i think he's a better actor than that and
i think i think it'll be fun i think it'll be
Yeah, I agree with you. I think he is a decent
actor. I think, you know, he surprised a lot
of people in Birdman last year. And I think he's
got a lot of talent that we might be able to
see another side of him and see how he does with
the voice roles there. Another kind of, I guess
you could call it a pseudo -horror film, cult
classic maybe, confirmation about a Beetlejuice
2 movie coming possibly from Winona Ryder, also
kind of... referring to a interview that Michael
Keaton did, or no, that Tim Burton did, one of
them. Somebody said something in an interview
and she kind of took it off there. Renota Weider.
Renota Weider. Yeah. So what do you think, Dan?
I think this... is the right time for something
like that. I'm not necessarily saying that we
necessarily need one, but I think if they were
going to do a reboot or a sequel... Of course
we absolutely need one. I mean, this is the time
where, I mean, it's all about all of the undead
and all of this type of stuff, and I think people
would eat this up. I don't know, is there still...
There was never not a following for this movie.
There has been a continuous following for this
movie. I even loved... I'm guessing you're giving
us a thumbs up. I'm giving it two freaking thumbs
up. I even loved the cartoon. I think that it
was a really cool, fun, scary, creepy, rude,
crude, and social acceptable world to be in.
I loved it. Alright, Stan has... I'll freely
amend that. I have watched the cartoon Beetlejuice,
but I've actually never watched the movie. I
know, it's ridiculous. You've never seen the
original movie? I have not, no. I don't know,
I've always missed it. I've seen Fits and Pieces
here and there, but never sat and watched it
straight through. So maybe it'll get me more
obligated to go watch it, I don't know. My little
brother was in diapers and wanted to watch this
movie on repeat. Was that recently? when he was
little and he wanted to watch it over and over
again and he would recite some of the lines and
act out a couple of the scenes and it was ridiculous
it's worth it just for the day song whatever
the name of that actual song yeah yeah all right
so we'll have to see Dan if you watch that sometime
down the road and get your reaction from that
I haven't seen it probably since the 1980s so
what or maybe the first couple years of the nineties.
I don't know, I definitely haven't seen it since
I was in high school. So that's been a long time
for me as well. Not as long as you Dan, since
you've never seen it. Going on to one more news
and then we got a plethora of news from a certain
franchise that we're obligated to talk about.
But before we get to that, Dan, I wanted to get
your opinion because I don't know if you've seen
this show or not. I personally have not seen
the show. Have you ever, did you ever watch the
HBO series Deadwood? No, it's been in my queue
forever and one bigger reason I haven't is because
I've heard it like it kind of ends on a cliffhanger
so I've... been hesitant to pick it up because
I'm like I don't want to like watch a show and
then end up getting disappointed because I never
got a proper finale. This is definitely one of
the shows if I had had HBO at the time I probably
would have watched because it's something that's
like right up my alley I love that kind of setting
and you know the whole western feel etc and I
definitely would have watched it I think I saw
part of like an episode early on and I was like
I was gonna get into it but I'm like I have no
way to watch this so that would be a really hard
thing to do and it was probably before the amount
of options that are currently available to watch
TV shows. It is on Amazon Prime. There we go.
I might have to catch up to it too, but like
I said, same kind of thing that you were talking
about. The inclusive end makes you wonder if
you want to invest your time in something that
you know isn't going to happen. But look at Heroes.
See what they have on that? And it's coming back,
bruh. You're excited about that? Super excited.
But I know there's been multiple things that
they were going to do to tie up all the loose
ends and kind of put this to a close. And now
it seems like they might be starting to discuss
making a actual big screen film to try to kind
of tie it all together. I'm not going to say
much about it because I've never seen it. Dan,
you've never seen it. Amanda, have you ever seen
any episodes of Deadwood? No. So we'll leave
it up to the listeners to tell us if this is
good or bad. Are you guys excited or not about
the possibility of a Deadwood film? Or is this
enough to make you want to watch the series for
the first time? So, interesting to see your guys'
take on that. We have a whole bunch of Star Wars
related news, so let's just get it all out there.
Get your guys' reaction. If you're sick of Star
Wars news, you can pass your turn here, but I
don't know. That seems for me to be the one franchise
that I don't get sick of. news and rumors for
although i'm trying to stay away from anything
that tells me anything about plots or details
of that nature dan i have heard the force does
awaken so just the force awakens and thanks for
doing it for me i know thank you for clarifying
it for me because i wasn't sure so there there's
um a bunch of articles recently there's details
about the the han solo and the boba fet possible
spin -offs. There was the casting news for Rogue
One. There was the confirmation of a director,
one Colin Chavarro, for one of the future episodes.
And there was also one of the first images. for
Rogue One, kind of giving you the cast and maybe
a slight look at that. Dan, did any of that stuff
pique your interest? Are you keeping up with
any of this stuff or are you trying to avoid
everything like the plague? I'm not really avoiding
it, but I'm also not not ticking it out. I did
see the image for Rogue One, which it does look
intriguing. It's kind of weird to be like, get
excited about an image, but I do just the way
they're going for it. if you like compare that
image to like episode one and two and three it
just that one like they look like real people
compared to the previous one so that and that
cast just has me excited like mostly Ben Mendelsohn
and Felicity Jones like that they're getting
legit actors for these roles that are, you know,
not necessarily mainstream. I mean, they're Oscar
nominated or known well in the movie world, but
they're not like Brad Pitt or, you know, more
movie star type level. So I'm really liking what
Disney is doing with Star Wars. I mean, I think
they have really taken it and yeah, they may
be oversaturating it with the amount of movies
they're doing, but I feel like they're at least
putting a lot of thought and getting a lot of
talented people to make sure that these movies
are actually good. Liam Neeson was in episode
one. I'm not saying they were void of that. Hugh
McGregor is a good actor, but you know there's
also... They fooled us once. The rest of the
cast did get disclosed too, as well as the ones
you mentioned, Felicity Jones and Ben Mendelsohn.
You also have Forrest Whitaker, Alan Tudyk, and
Mads Mikkelsen amongst a couple other people,
which to me just makes the cast even more...
Mads Mikkelsen's like my favorite actor right
now, like everything he does, especially like
him and Hannibal, so that has me super excited
that him and Ben Mendelsohn in the same film
in the Star Wars movie, I'm in. So, Mendelsohn
I think would make it great. Great Star Wars
villain else. Yeah, hopefully we'll see Yeah,
I think that's I'm a big fan of Mads Mikkelsen
as well so I'm definitely excited about that
cast before Amanda chimes in Dan any thoughts
of the Attachment of Colin Trevorrow to one of
the films now, too. I think it's too early to
make it declaration of him as a directory like
he's only done two films so far I like safety
not guaranteed Jurassic World was fine it was
hard to tell like how much it was him like how
much of an input he had and that I thought he
had some decent moments overall but I don't know
it doesn't really excite me or not excite me
yet it it does seem like it What's happening
now is like you're getting a director that has
like one good indie hit and then suddenly now
they're getting put in every big film But I do
like they're at least diversifying with directors
at least Yeah, like I said like you said there's
not a lot to judge him on so I'm kind of indifferent
as well about you know a lot of people are kind
of either going crazy in a good or bad way over
this and I think that's you know let's let's
let the guy do a couple a couple films before
we go crazy on him being attached to the franchise.
I mean, the guy who directed it and far as strikes
back was, what, how many movies did he direct?
You know, Ivan Kirshner. Yeah. After that. So
I feel like, in a way, these are movies that
are not to be... Well, a lot of ways probably
direct themselves, kind of like Marvel studio
films. I wonder how much say these directors
are actually going to have. True. That's a good
point. Amanda, any excitement over any of the
Star Wars news, or are you fighting at the chance
to talk about the next news story? I just want
to see the movies already. I'm kind of sick of
talking about it. I just want it to be here.
I just want to watch it and enjoy it. I don't
want to hear anything more about it. I want to
watch it, like, four times already. Alright,
what's your one -upper? Alright, so we'll have
to wait. I'm sure it's just going to ramp up
here as we get closer and closer to December.
I don't know how I can ramp up anymore. It's
going to ramp up when we're standing out in the
cold at whatever time it is that night. You'll
just get Dunkin' Donuts, Star Wars coffee mug.
That's when Taco Bell has their Star Wars cups.
That's when it gets really serious. Those cups
are so inconvenient, by the way. They're so impractical.
The ones where they have, like, the thing that
you put on top that's like the figure that has,
like, the hands and then, like, a straw. That
was, like, way back in the day from MP3. Yeah,
I don't know. I don't know those. I had a couple
of them and it was impossible to put in any type
of cup holder because it was so top heavy that
it was just gonna flip over and pop would be
everywhere, so. You would be trying to put that
in a cup holder in your bar. I would be. Not
a shame. There are five -year -olds sitting in
front of the TV. What? Watching Ninja Turtles,
okay? They're not for grown men trying to put
it in their car and take it with them. Well,
then I do not have any of them in the basement.
That means he has all of them. No, I didn't.
They're in the attic. Let's be fair. Alright,
moving on before I get thrown over the bus anymore.
Under, over, on the bus. No, both. That's what
I feel. Alright, Amanda, I know you're stoked
about this one, so we'll get right into it. Predator.
The new Predator movie's fresh perspective will
reinvent the franchise. I think you're still
going to be one ugly motherfucker no matter who
I listen to. But I'm super excited. I love the
Predator franchise. Ever since I was little and
saw the first one, I've been hooked. I think
the Predator is such a cool creature, such a
cool character. And even though he doesn't really
talk... that much besides what he's mimicking.
I think that he's super dynamic and has a lot
to him that, you know, you can glean from watching
him and watching, you know, all these things
that he does and his interactions with humans
and the other aliens that are like him. The only
one that I was kind of, I didn't really dig was
Predators with Adrian Brody, Michelle Rodriguez,
I think was in it. joint. That was a little boring
where they're actually on like the Predator's
planet. I thought that could have done a lot
better so I'm excited for something to come in
and kind of rejuvenate the whole franchise. You
are way more knowledgeable of the Predator world
than I am. Dan I had a question for you along
this one because the producer is... He's keeping
a whole bunch of praise on Shane Black and just
a couple snippets here from the article. His
new direction for the franchise is nothing short
of genius. I've read a lot of his script and
I think it's genius. Again, right after that,
I think it's genius. And then amazing writer
-director, and then here's the one that'll either
rub people the right way or the wrong way. This
is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.
I mean, he's the guy who wrote Iron Man 3. I
like Iron Man 3. I do too. I know a lot of people
don't, but I like Iron Man 3. Do you think it's
interesting, though, the way that the amount
of praise, or are you intrigued by how he's claiming
this is going to be a pretty unique reinvention
and re -look at the franchise? I like seeing
Black as a writer. I think he is a legit writer.
I mean, if he didn't even like Iron Man 3, Kiss
Kiss Bang Bang with the weapon films, I think
there's no question. It is interesting thinking,
I don't know if he's ever done science fiction
before, but that's a tricky word, honestly, because
how much are you reinventing? I agree with Amanda
that the Predator is a great character. It's
kind of just his idea and his character design.
It's amazing. It's one of the best. I think yeah,
reinventing is good, but also I don't want to
get to the point where it's like now you have
this alien that can talk and he's like, you know,
it's some sort of like ninja character that's
nothing like the original. You know, reinventing
can go a lot of different ways, you know, and
Shane Black's typically a guy who is known for
his dialogue. So can you, can you, can you make
that interpretable? Maybe, maybe you can. So
I, I... I too was a little disappointed with
Predators. I thought it had a good premise, but
it ended up just kind of being a meh film. So
I do think there's more to get out of the Predator
franchise. I've read some of the comics. There's
actually some good stories there. The mythology
is actually interesting for sure. So hopefully
they'll be able to do something and bring it
back. And Amanda has drawn a picture of the Predator
for me while we've been talking. I'm trying.
All right, so interesting news as far as Predator
goes. We'll see how that all turns out and what
kind of genius new take on it that Shane Black
has. I'm intrigued. Maybe he'll look like this.
I don't think he's going to look like this. I'm
glad you knew that's what it was. That's a great
podcast, you know, by the way. Alright, we talked
about the reboot or the second chance try at
a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and what
your guys' interest level was back then. I'm
curious now if you're more or less interested
now that it turns out where it's going to be
the League of Extraordinary Gentlewomen instead
of men. Dan? I just hope that's not the title.
Gentlewomen. You didn't like it? No, not so much.
I don't know. Sure, I guess. I mean, I don't
know what characters are going to be introducing
or using or actors. It's kind of hard to say
without many names attached at this point. And
it doesn't really have source material, like
to my knowledge that the original did. So I'd
be interested at this point, but it's hard to
really give a full, full opinion on it, since
it's really in infancy with what we have so far.
And not that you can't change genders of characters
that are already established the article does
state that there was only like one female character
in that yeah Yeah, I mean, I don't know how you
make like Huckaberry Finn into a woman. Maybe
you could I don't know I think Hopefully they
don't do that and they more so get like good
female You know characters from classic literature
and use those because that would be kind of cool
if you can get some Yeah, I think that would
lend itself to some decent possibilities and
some interesting creations Amanda you like the
extraordinary gentleman. I think it was fine.
Just the way it was I don't know what they're
gonna do with it making it more female centric
Going in line with the the Ghostbusters reboot
I think that I'm not really sure how they are
going to morph these characters or what characters
are going to be used. I think that if I can see
some casting behind it, I might be a little bit
more excited. I'm definitely excited for the
idea. When I heard it's going to be more female
-centric, I was a little taken back from it.
So I need some more news to renew my faith in
it. Do we know what role Melissa McCarthy will
be playing? Bitches and everything, doesn't matter
what she's playing. She'll just show up, walk
through the set. She'll be Frankenstein's monster.
That'll be a movie, yeah. Someone's going to
hear this and that's going to become a movie.
I thought she was going to be a Stapuff Marshmallow
Man. Not the case. All right, I'm not going to
let anyone talk about the next one because I'm
just going to tell all the listeners to circle
your calendars. 2018. Because that's when we're
getting a feature film animated version of Scooby
-Doo. Yay. Because 700 direct -to -video animated
films are not enough. So it's gonna be an animated
film, not live action? Yeah, it's gonna be animated.
It's exactly like all the stuff that are releasing
to DVD, except it's gonna be an actual big screen
feature film. Sure. So that's just terrible.
Going back to something else that probably will
end up being terrible as well. It may be a product
that's been talked about for 15 years, but apparently
it's gaining some steam. We're talking about
Zorro Reborn. The mask of Zorro was the shit.
This is a specific story that's, I kind of guess,
been in the works, like I said, for about 15
years. It's been up, it's been down, it's going
to be made, it's not going to be made. Man, the
legendary sword -swinger relocated to a post
-apocalyptic wasteland. What? Sorry. It's Mad
Max, but it's Zorro playing the role of Mad Max,
I guess. Oh, wow. I don't know. They're trying
to introduce the classic Zorro character to a
new generation, but don't worry folks, don't
get too excited because they're actually still
searching to try to find the director. I hate
like... to introduce it to a new generation.
We're just going to take everything about it
and make it different. And yeah, this is ridiculous.
You don't need to put everything in the post
-apocalyptic world. That worked for Mad Max,
Dan. Yeah, but that was originally in the post
-apocalyptic world. I know. I feel like that's
what's happening. People are like, Mad Max got
a lot of great reviews. It was in a post -apocalyptic
world. and it had a female lead so every movie
is trying to do one of those two things it's
like let's either set it in the post -apocalyptic
world or let's focus on a female lead which i'm
fine with you know it needs to be more of them
but man let's do the annie griffith show but
in the apocalypse some deformed creature whistling
down um but man i don't know is there anybody
that is is there a fan base for zoro still these
days No, I mean not to my knowledge. I mean I
talking about introducing it to a new generation
I don't even think it was successful or popular
with our generation. Oh, I like that one. I don't
know nice pretty well, but yeah I actually watched
the original of the TV series the classic TV
series a lot with my parents because they liked
it a lot, but Yeah, I mean, I don't necessarily
think it's like yeah, it's got some name recognition
I guess so that's worth something today, I guess
Who doesn't know that freakin' Z slashed with
a sword in his hands? That's true, that's true.
Pretty iconic, I guess. Not giving it enough
credit. I'll calm down. Calm down yourself. Don't
help Zorro, man. Come on, now. Last news story,
as promised, guys, and then we're gonna get into
some trailer talk, and that is Prometheus 2 is
rumored to come before Alien 5. I don't even
know if I can keep track of what's what in that
franchise at the moment. I'd have to probably
rewatch everything. Dan, is that interesting?
I, one of the few people I feel like that liked
Prometheus. I did too. I like Prometheus, but
I'm trying to remember all of the Alien movies
plus that. Place them all chronologically in
my head. I haven't, yeah, I don't know where
Alien 5 is even gonna fall or who's doing what.
I don't know. Cause it's like Prometheus is kind
of a prequel, but then it's like, well, it really
isn't. I don't know. It's kind of crazy. I'd
personally, I'd rather see Prometheus 2 before
Alien 5. So I'm perfectly okay with this. Let's
talk about Prometheus 2 landing in 2017 and Alien
5 landing in 2018. So we will see Amanda excited
about more aliens and Prometheus and all that
have you seen Prometheus? Yeah, I saw Prometheus
the creepy self -abortion scene at the end pretty
Pretty nasty messed me up a little bit. I wasn't
a huge fan of that movie. I thought it was it
was out there definitely I liked how it kind
of I had those ties into Alien, but the only
time I really like Alien is when it's Alien versus
Predator, so... I'd rather see Predator, but
if it's cool, I'll see it. That should be a game
we play. What movie can we make better by adding
the Predator? I'm winning that game. She's already
got a slew of probably what you picked out. Lincoln,
that'd be better with Predator. Oh, man. I'm
cast away. All right, let's get into some trailer
talk. We're not going to talk about all of them,
but they're all going to be linked to on the
website. There has been 20 new trailers since
the last time we discussed trailers, so I'll
just give everybody a chance to talk about one
or two that they're excited or very much adamantly
opposed to. Dan, we'll start with you. Yay or
nay for a trailer. What do you got? I feel like
kind of have to start with it since we are talking
about Quentin T and Rotino Right now with all
his films and that of course is the trailer that
finally came out for the hateful eight Right.
I I will say that the first time I watched it.
I was like kind of let down I was like that that
was disappointed. It didn't really have the style
I was expecting. It seemed I don't know a little
uneventful I've watched it like five times since
then and I do like On a cinematic standpoint,
I do think it looks gorgeous. And it does seem
like it's going to be more classic, something
like Jenga, which was kind of cross genre. So
I'm interested in it, of course. But still, I
was expecting more from the trailer than we got.
I still recommend, I'm still giving it a thumbs
up. But I'm a little bit more hesitant than I
was before, so. I'm going to give it a yay as
well. I mean, I can kind of see exactly what
you're saying. I was still excited about it,
though. I like the setting. I like the actors
involved. My apprehension, I guess, comes slightly
with the Samuel L. Jackson character. And I'm
going to try to not form any opinions until I
see it. But I'm somewhat worried. And I'm sure
we're going to get into this as we kind of wrap
up the Tarantino spotlight. But I don't know.
I'm somewhat worried about how he's been portrayed
in a few movies recently. Not that it's bad the
way that he's been portrayed, but it's almost
borderline too comical for me in a few films
in the last couple years, and I'm just kind of
apprehensive about what his character's gonna
be like in this film, but I'm still excited about
it, and like I said, the whole cast and the setting
and everything, I'm still on board. Amanda, how
did you feel about that trailer? I think I'm
on board, but I think I felt much like Dan, where
I was a little disappointed. I didn't feel like
there was a whole lot going on, and I'm hoping
they're just saving the good stuff, rightfully
so, for the actual film. That would be unheard
of these days. All right, Amanda, what do you
got? You got one that you want to shout out in
a positive or negative way? I'm going to go with
another positive. I am super stoked for The Last
Witch Hunter. Even these new trailers, I'm like,
yes, this is everything that The Seventh Son
should have been. And Vin Diesel's on board,
so of course I have to be on board. I think it's
a really cool premise, and you know, I dig that
genre anyway, so I was hooked at that. And I
really dig what these trailers are putting out,
too. Alright, I'll keep it positive as well and
the one I'll talk about which I can see maybe
not everybody being as positive about but would
be the first look that we got at the movie Life
about James Dean and the photographer that is
following him with Dane DeHaan seemingly getting
all kinds of early... praise for his role in
that one. That was one of the ones that was kind
of in the discussion for me with the most anticipated
films of the year. It was kind of the first look
I got at it. I'm still on board. I think this
is going to be an interesting film, but I'm also
a big James Dean fan. So I guess it wouldn't
take much for me to be on board at this point.
I don't know. What was your... Dan, did you have
a reaction to that one? I did. I did like it.
I do like they do Han as an actor and I'm actually
really intrigued in what that's gonna be and
how that's gonna work out. So I'm excited for
it. All right. Amanda, any interest in it? I
don't think I had heard about this before we
watched the trailer the other day and I think
that I I'm gonna dig it as much as I don't know.
I think it still has a slow feel that I'm not
going to like. But I do think that James Dean
is a super cool guy and some of that look that
we got with that casting is pretty intriguing.
All right. Fair enough. Give it one more round.
You don't have to pick something else out if
you don't want to. But if there's something else
that you would like to give a shout out, go for
it. Dan, anything else? Two can come to mind,
but I'll go with the Martian. It's similar when
I was like, I thought pixels could be good and
I was disappointed. I'm worried about having,
getting excited for Ridley Scott movie just because
he's now, last two years with the counselor and
actually with the gods and forget his exodus.
I have not yet even watched that. just kind of
bring myself to it. But I think it looks pretty
good. I was wondering how they're going to make
it work, but I'm liking the idea. This cast looks
strong, so I'm hesitant, but optimistic about
that film. Yeah, I'm a lot of the same way. I
can see bits and pieces of a lot of great films
in there, and I'm just hoping that it all comes
together to be a complete... Story and a complete
experience. My only my biggest concern is that
it just be like another Survival film and like
just that we've kind of seen time and time again
So will it be able to separate itself or not?
Yeah, just exactly Yeah, I'm with you on that
one Amanda your thoughts on Martian and any other
tray that you wanted to bring up I think Martian
should be pretty good. I think it should be an
action Thrill ride as well as like kind of an
emotional roller coaster. So I think that's gonna
have quite a few things going for it And Matt
Damon and science in the shit out of things.
It was gonna be pretty cool I think that my next
trailer choice I'm gonna go with another yay
for Victor Frankenstein I think that that whole
story and the lore behind that is always super
cool to watch And with James McAvoy and Daniel
Radcliffe, Harry Potter and the Hizels, I think
it's going to be a really cool adaptation. And
seeing little snippets of the monster in that
trailer really has me intrigued. I think it should
be pretty good. All right. If I had to pick another
one out, if I was trying to be positive, I don't
know, maybe Stonewall, but I guess to be negative,
I would go with the trailer for Ride Along 2.
Why would you? It's just not necessary at all.
So I didn't enjoy the first one. I'm not going
to see the second one. So I don't know if anybody's
excited for that. I guess you can tell me why.
But I didn't hear anybody praise the first one
very much. I also think that it's comical that
writer of the song Fuck the Police is playing
a cop once again in a movie. True, very true.
All right, so there's a bunch of other trailers
on the website. Go ahead and check those out.
Give us your feedback on which ones you're excited
for, which ones have kind of taken the air out
of your balloon there, or air out of your sails,
whichever is the best phrase, I don't know. But
we're going to take a quick break. We've been
at it for a little while. We're going to catch
our breath, and then we're going to come back
and talk to you about all the different films
we've been seeing since last we talked. So we'll
be right back after the break. Hey guys, it's
Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy Mandy and we just wanted
to let you guys know about another podcast out
there that we both think you would all enjoy.
It's one of both of our favorite shows to listen
to and it's none other than the True Bromance
podcast. True Bromance is a movie podcast hosted
by longtime friends Hiro and Barry and if you
like to smile, laugh, and just be genuinely entertained
while listening to movie talk, then this is definitely
the right show for you. Each week, the guys break
down a recently released movie, and not only
do they tie in the movie that week to the beers
that they are drinking during the show, but they
also tie it into a real fun top and bottom five
list associated with that movie. It's a blast
hearing both sides of these lists, and it definitely
makes them unique amongst all other movie review

On the Simplistic Reviews podcast, we talk movies.
We talk TV. Hello Julie, what the heck are you
doing? Yeah, I'm pretty sure you could have got
the point across with sound effects, not the
real thing. I'm sure your insurance company will
cover that. No they won't. No they probably won't.
Talking in circles. Because the world needs another
podcast, we are here as Geekcast Radio's newest
edition. And as the title says, each week we
get lost in conversation about a wide range of
topics, including movies, comics, games, art,
TV, and even occasionally sports. We play games
and discuss pivotal topics like who would win
in a fight, the Kool -Aid Man or Tony the Tiger,
and examine the hot button issues of the world
of Geekdom. We keep things fresh by taking timeless
topics in new directions. We are simply three
friends having a fun time talking about life's
most fascinating foibles. Stay connected with
us every Tuesday on iTunes or at geecastradio
.com Thanks for sticking with us. It is time
to get into the what we've been watching segment
in lieu of a main discussion because we have
probably about 10 to 12 films to talk about total
I would guess if you're ending up Amanda, myself,
Dan and our homework assignment. So we're just
gonna get into all of that and see where it goes.
We're gonna start with a film that achieved something
that is pretty hard to do. in my book. I don't
know, Amanda, in your film -going experience,
but there has hardly ever been a time in my life
that I have stopped a film before it ends. I'm
not talking about walking out of the theater,
which I don't think I've ever done, but as far
as watching a film on DVD or something and just...
Not stopping it because I had to go somewhere.
Not stopping it because of some type of emergency
or because I ran out of time. Just stopping it
because I couldn't take another second. And that
would have been one of our rentals from this
week called Miss Julie. Dan, have you seen this
one? Never even heard of it. Okay, that's good.
Colin Farrell, Jessica Chastain. Colin Farrell,
Jessica Chastain, and that's basically it. You
don't need to know about anybody else that's
in this. It's a period piece in which they are
kind of playing this little cat. Jessica Chastain
is basically trying to seduce Colin Farrell,
who is one of the paid employees of this... uh...
household or whatever right in front of his wife
or something like that this movie was absolutely
agonizingly painful for about the first i don't
know how much did we get into it a half hour
twenty minutes maybe we got about twenty minutes
or so into this and we had to stop it I guess
what happened was we were so in pain and then
we ended up reading the summary on whatever,
Rotten Tomato or something, to see kind of what
route we were going to go for the rest of the
movie. And it basically told us that we were
going to continue watching exactly what had gone
on for another hour and a half. Like weird shit,
like her making him kiss her boot for no reason.
and it had like mud and stuff all over it and
it's just a lot of weird power and control struggle
back and forth between the two. Which if it had
been intriguing for the first 20 minutes I guess
we would have stuck around but since we didn't
enjoy the first 20 minutes of the struggle back
and forth knowing that it was going to be an
hour, hour and a half of the exact same thing
for the rest of the movie was not enough to keep
us watching that so Miss Julie earned a stop
20 minutes into it. I don't ever do that. So
that was a milestone, I guess, for us. So I guess
we can't rate it since we didn't see it. But
I would not recommend that to anybody. And if
anybody out there has seen it and enjoyed it,
please let me know what happens to us in the
movie that made it so enjoyable. Dan, what's
something that you watch? One thing I did watch
I caught up with one summer film from 2015, and
that's Terminator Genesis. I'm not going to say
a great deal. Mostly everything's been set out.
This is gonna get killed by a lot of people.
I mean people thought it was like the worst thing
ever. I don't think it was nearly that bad. I
do think the plot is convoluted and like the
time travel thing just kind of gets kind of crazy.
And you know, Jack Courtney is not the best kind
of reason. The only Jay Courtney fan on the planet
is sitting here. Really? Wow, okay. Well, I'll
even - Jay's my boy! Even Amelia Clarke, who
I like in Game of Thrones, I thought was kind
of not great as Sarah Connor. I think Arnold,
though, I did feel like this is the best thing
he's done since he's come back. He still had
some of that charisma that pulled him through
the other films. It's nothing near the level
of Terminator 1 or 2, but I think it's on par
with the third film. It has its moments, its
actions, okay. I do think like it's Big Twist
does get completely ruined by the trailer like
that. It may have been more effective if I didn't
know it was coming and have been looking for
it the entire time. And the action was, it had
moments, but at times where it was like there's
this gigantic chase sequence on a bus. And I
guess I didn't even get where, like what the
chase was even, like what's the purpose of this
chase? Like, were they even going? Like, what
is their end goal here? So it was, you know,
it had, but. Some of the Terminator vs. Terminator
fights were fun to watch. I did the new design
of the new Terminator. I thought they did some
interesting things with it. I think it's mediocre.
It's probably the worst thing. I don't think
it's awful. I think it's better than Salvation,
which I think is pretty bad. I'd give it a 5
out of 10. I wouldn't give it a recommend, but
I don't think it's necessarily... What did you
think of the first 20, 25 minutes? I felt like
it was a little too self -referential, and it
just, it all had, all the callbacks to the previous
Boonton films were, I mean, I thought some were
okay, some were better than others, but I just,
when you do that for me, I just want to start
watching the other movie. I'm like, I'd just
rather go back and watch Terminator 1 and Terminator
2. I like the idea of that, though, of the concept
of playing with those timelines, but I thought
they could do some better things. Also, I was
thinking, if you're preparing all this time for
these moments, do you think you'd be better prepared?
like why not give terminator like why not just
give arnold the gun that kills the terminator
i don't i don't know there's always been so many
times in that franchise where i've been like
well if you have the ability to do this yeah
why don't you just do that so that's the best
time travel it gets a little murky uh for sure
but Yeah, I mean, I did like the first half,
I think more than the second half for the most
part. But yeah, the thing that kind of annoyed
me, and I guess it's because it's supposed to
be like the beginning of a trilogy, was the amount
of unanswered questions that it leaves. I think
I hate this thing movies are doing now where
they're like writing for the sequel where it's
like, okay, this will be explained later. And
that gets annoying because what we're seeing
is that often doesn't happen. The sequel maybe
not get made. So then you're just having like
a half film, half of a film, so. Right. No, I
think that is a dangerous thing. I think there
is something to say for a film that could be
part of a franchise or a trilogy or whatever
that can also stand by itself and stand on its
own. Just to go to the classic example of the
original Star Wars film, A New Hope, that's a
film that does fit into the whole franchise and
the whole trilogy, but it also could have been
a film in and of itself. And I think there's
something of an accomplishment when you can do
that. So I'm with you. I don't like that whole
let's just write something and then set it up
for 18 more films by not answering anything in
the first film. Amanda, what do you want to go
to next? Do you want to go into one that I just
saw? Let's go into one of the two that you saw
by yourself. Alright, I guess we could start
with Weegee. I finally caught up with Weegee.
Was that 2014 or 2015? I don't know. It's from
last year. Okay, 2014. I do like the horror genre.
I even like beat rated horror for the most part.
This movie, I think that it was a cool concept
and it did a couple things really well as far
as their scare tactics went. It was a lot of
jump scares and then at the end I think that
it had some pretty creepy elements as well. I
wasn't... Terrified throughout I was definitely
super creeped out. I'm gonna give it a six out
of ten just Just be I guess maybe being a little
hard on it, but also a little little generous
in some areas, too I don't think I'd ever rewatch
it, but I would recommend it for somebody else
to pick up All right, not enough to get me to
watch it if you would have given it a ten Maybe
I would watch it. I Don't think it's gonna I'd
do anything for you, Kev. Okay. Dan, what else
did you see this last couple weeks? I hate to
keep the negative train running, but I kind of
have to with this. And I'll preface this by saying
I am a fan of, I don't know if you've heard of
him, Doug Benson. He's a comedian. He hosts the
podcast. Doug loves movies, which is legitimately
one of my favorite podcasts. It's more of a comedic
podcast. It plays a lot of different games, like
winter mountain games. I find them very funny.
for the most part, like I think this podcast
is great. His stand up is pretty good. It's not
my favorite, but he has his moments. And he's
directed a few films. He's directed Super High
Me, which was like a parody of Super Size Me,
where instead of eating fast food, he smoked
pot for 30 days. look at it in God of Defect.
It wasn't a great documentary. It was okay. But
he's kind of had this thing where he has been
making kind of spoofs of Morgan Spurlock's documentary.
And one he did was of Morgan Spurlock's documentary
Comic -Con episode for A New Hope or Fans Hope.
And he made his own documentary inspired by that
called Chronicon episode 420, A New Dope. Again,
I'm not a pothead or a smoke pot at all, but
that is a big part of Doug Benson's comedy in
some way. It's not so much his podcast, but it...
The basic premise is, and I say premise loosely,
is it's just like Doug Benson going into Comic
-Con and his two goals were to find Morgan Sparlock
and then like smoke with some dude dressed up
as a superhero and kind of just get more of the
fan perspective of Comic -Con. This to me legitimately
is one of the poorest excuses I've seen for a
documentary in a long time. And like I said,
I'm a Doug Benson fan, but this was... There
are times when movies are bad because things
don't work out, you go over something and it
doesn't work. To me, this was bad because it
was just lazy. It was ill -conceived. Legitimately,
there are times where you're just following him
around, walking along the street just kind of
doing nothing. At one time, you're just like,
there's this homeless guy freaking out, so they're
videotaping him with a blurted face, and that's...
And then they move on to the next thing and it
takes they probably shot this in a couple of
days and to me It's the equivalent equivalent
of just getting like three or four vine videos
and putting it together and then releasing in
it as a movie It's just it's it's It's annoying
and just how had how little effort went into
making this movie and just there's it's useless.
It's aimless There's nothing going on. I don't
there's no resemblance of a point Like I said
his two major goals are to smoke and meet Morgan
Sporlock and he meets more Morgan Sporlock They
have like a two -minute conversation and then
they go on At the end of the day, I think it
was just they had the title and that's all they
had and then they're like Oh, we'll just videotape
it for a weekend and that's all we did and there's
nothing much to it and there's very even Little
review of the actual comic -con itself. They
will they go in for like 20 minutes and they
walk out There's there's nothing really there.
So it is it is bad. It's you it's I Like to me,
it's like an embarrassment of a documentary in
a lot of ways It shouldn't have been released
as a major film. I don't even know if it was
in theaters, but it is on Netflix so You mean
there are moments where I've laughed like here
and there they're there and he puts in bits and
pieces of his documentary or his podcast like
he One of his live podcasts he does he put it
on and that was probably the best part this entire
thing Uh, so I I would give this the lowest score.
I think I have given film on cinema geeks That's
a one out of ten and it's avoid at all costs.
Don't bother Uh, and and I I tried to kind of
wash the taste out of my mouth by watching his
other documentary He did before this and that
was the greatest movie ever rolled And that was
a little bit better Just because it was just
your classic, uh Stand -up tour documentary was
him going around the country and following him
around and that was okay It was just it was again
unoriginal but at least had more of a resemblance
and had a little bit more of a point to it and
And I'm a fan of stand -up. So it that was kind
of cool just seeing stand -up in different parts
of the country and how it's done and different
comedy clubs, but Overall, I would give that
a failing grade as well. I could give that a
four out of ten so I Avoid those at all costs,
but do listen to Douglas' movies, because I do
think it's a good podcast. All right, so a positive
review for the podcast, and stay away from everything
else. Yeah, pretty much. At least those two.
Yeah, at least his movies. I mean, Super High
Me was OK. I think that's kind of what got him
attention, and I think that at least has some
merit to it, but everything else he's done, documentary
-wise, has been pretty pathetic. Alright, so
that is interesting. I don't know if I've ever
seen you rate something that low or not find
much good. I don't think you said one redeeming
thing about that. That to me is the worst thing
a movie can do. There are times where a movie
may not work for me because it's not my taste
or what have you, but when I feel like a movie
is failing because there's no effort put in,
that to me is the biggest thing you can do when
it's just laziness that's pathetic. I agree.
Alright, let's move on to one that Amanda and
I both saw. I don't know if we're really going
to change things to positive quite yet. Other
times we can't even watch anything good. Right?
We saw a 2015 film entitled Barely Lethal. Wow,
that sounds amazing. starring Samuel L Jackson,
Sansa Stark, Haley Stan, and Jessica Alba, and
there's probably a couple other people in there
that I'm forgetting. I was somewhat fooled by
whatever... Yeah, he's a love interest. Okay.
I think I was somewhat fooled by either whatever
snippet I saw of a teaser or a trailer or the
marketing or something because I thought this
was going to be a completely different film.
I thought this was going to be a film where,
and this is not a spoiler, this is basically
from the trailer, but Samuel L. Jackson heads
an organization that takes foster kids or Orphans
or whatever and then trains them as assassins
from a very young age like three or four and
It's just like this whole covert organization
that he's training kid assassins and I thought
it was gonna be like take one part Kingsman and
like one part I don't know Hitman and then one
part something like kick ass or something like
that and like put it all together and that is
not what this film was. This film does not know
what it wanted to be. This film even plays, because
basically instead of that what you get is you
get Hayley Seinfeld's character who escapes from
the organization and then just tries to be a
normal person in a high schooler and it turns
into wanting to be, she even references like
She wants to know what it's like to be in high
school, and so she watches, there's like a whole
montage of her watching movies, and she watches
Clueless, and she watches Mean Girls, Breakfast
Club, Bring It On, and like two or three other
films that she watches. 10 Things I Hate About
You. And then the film proceeds to try to be
all of those films. Which ends up with the whole
thing being a complete failure. I guess parts
of it were entertaining maybe a little bit or
something but it didn't know what it wanted this
identity to be and it ended up just being very
bad and there was no performances that were good
there was this was just a bad film I don't know
Amanda what did you think overall? I thought
it was crap I mean it It wasn't even one of those
fun teen dramas. I think it made fun of that,
but didn't do a good enough job of being funny.
I think that the dialogue throughout was just
total trash and weak, and I think that Sansa
Stark's character was completely outrageous,
really. I mean, she had no tact, and she wasn't...
There was no redeeming qualities, I think, in
her character whatsoever. I don't even think
the action was that great. I think it was supposed
to be centered around an action feel. Yeah, it
definitely took place in a high school that I've
never seen. kids act the way that they did in
this high school. Even the parents were awful
like just like facilitating drinking and partying.
It was all the stereotypes. It took every type
of parent that's ever been in one of those movies
and just exaggerated it to stupid stupidity levels.
I mean this movie's not good. Save your money
and save your time. I would give this one a three
out of ten. What about you? I gave it a four
out of ten being kind of generous because I think
it did have a couple funny moments. But that's
about it. All right, Amanda. What about I know
you had two other films that you saw on your
own Why don't you talk about one of those real
quick? I think I only saw one other That by myself
and I'd be 50 shades of gray so I finally got
to Experience that I definitely didn't want to
give it my money in the theater But I did rent
it just so I could give my take on it my own
review And I don't think the content of the movie
was so bad, but I do think the Acting was just
awful in it Just painfully awkward And I think
the dialogue was just stupid just so stupid some
of the things that Christian Grey says are just
ridiculous like right out of the gate He just
he's dropping all these innuendos and she's kind
of sitting there like dirt not picking them up
and and just being her weird awkward self and
there was a nasty bush and I just found myself
a lot of the times going, uh, okay, really? I
mean, not like the sex scenes. I think the sex
scenes were pretty cool. Some of the stuff they
did, I was like, all right, not hatin', but as
far as the dialogue and the acting and some of
the submissive dominance aspects, I was just
like, I don't know if that's real life. Yeah,
it was just awkward. I think that if they would
have gotten... anybody else to play these two
characters, it would have been awesome. Alright,
so rave review and what was your score for Fifty
Shades of Grey? I'll give it a 5 out of 10, just
because it had some cool steamy scenes, but at
one point when she goes in the red room, she's
touching all this stuff, like whips and stuff
that ties people up, and I'm just like, oh bitch,
are you just going to act like that doesn't need
to be Lysol before you touch it? It was just,
yeah, I just didn't feel like it was real. I
just couldn't get into it. All right. Sad I missed
that one. Are you? No. Dan, what else did you
see? Well, I'll give at least one positive review
today. And it's another documentary. And it's
one I didn't really, I don't know. I kind of
just threw on. It was on Hulu. And I wanted to
see. It was one called Fake It So Real. And it's
about this. town in North Carolina. Well, the
centers are on these guys who kind of developed
their own independent wrestling federation. And
let's just say they don't necessarily look like
the guys you would see in WWE or anything like
that. Out of shape, a lot of them. It's you and
me and everybody else that's doing podcasts.
Pretty much, yeah. It'd be like if you got a
podcast wrestling federation. It's kind of similar
to that. but you know what though like the documentary
does kind of end up making them somewhat endearing
and you get to kind of learn like why they're
so much into this independent wrestling federation
that like you know they put in it's like in some
little town gym and where they have you know
a crowd of maybe 75 people or so but 75 people
that do seem to be really in it into it and uh
you know they put their all in I think the correlation
to podcasting actually, maybe that's why I ended
up liking it, because you did see people who,
you know, doing something that maybe some people
don't understand, but they really get something
out of it, and they put their all into it, and
they're proud of what they put out. And so I
found the characters in it were actually all
pretty intriguing, and they had some good stories.
It's weird at times, and the people are a little
strange, and there's this one guy in particular
that... His he's not his he's notable as a wrestler
because his butt is really big so that becomes
like a key element to his character and The main
the main I would say focus of it is this younger
guy. He's like 19 He's trying to break into this
federation and it's you know, he's trying to
be become you know a good wrestler and but his
story was was endearing but all the all the people
in it though you're kind of I don't know, there's
always something about them that you're wondering
about. You're like, I'm pretty sure some of these
people have been arrested a few times, but I
would recommend it. Even if you're not a wrestling
fan, because I think it does paint the picture
pretty well. Wrestling is a focal point, but
it's just really about people trying to, you
know, finding something they love and finding
a way to express it. I don't think wrestlers
have ever been accused of being completely mentally
stable. That's true. That's very true. And especially
when you have these people who are physically
hurting themselves for nothing. They're not making
any money or anything like that. So the money
they make from people coming to the show is just
money they have to put back into... putting show
up exactly for renting the room. If you don't
have good insurance through the WWE, that's not
a good thing. Alright, that's an interesting
one. I have to check that one out. It was fake,
it's so real. I'd give it a 6 .5 out of 10. Alright,
so that's your positive review, the 6 .5. Yeah,
sorry. That's a good couple weeks we've had.
I'm going to turn it positive for the next two
that we talk about and then Amanda has one on
her own. I'm not sure if that's getting a positive
or not. I haven't heard yet. But the next one
we'll talk about is a film we saw together and
that would be a film entitled Woman in Gold from
2015 starring Ryan Reynolds and what's the ladies
name? I'm not the right person to ask that. Um,
it's not Helen Mirren. It's, uh... It was Helen
Mirren. It is Helen Mirren. I have the right
person. I thought I was going to say the wrong
person. The lady from Driving Tests? I don't
know. So, anyways, obviously this is the story
of Helen Mirren's character and she was a, uh,
someone who fled. the Europe during the Holocaust
and got to America and now she is trying to reclaim
a family heirloom, a piece of art that was done
by her aunt. No, of her aunt. Of her aunt. A
painting done of her aunt that the family owned
that was stolen by the Nazis and it's kind of
her quest to try to return that to its rightful
place. It's currently in Austria and she's trying
to get that back and Ryan Reynolds plays the
young green lawyer attorney that is going to
try to help her get that back. It's an interesting
story. Obviously, stolen art is a huge element
of what happened during that time period and
there's been a couple different films in recent
years that have kind of touched on that. This
one was definitely very interesting. It's interesting
to see kind of the legal side of it and kind
of the battles that they were trying to do and
what process they had to go through. They basically
tried to, this is not really a spoiler, but they
tried to appeal to authorities in Austria to
get the painting back and kind of the struggles
that they go through with that and the ridiculous
red tape that's in their way to try to do anything
from that angle so then they have to kind of
resort to some other means and try to find some
loopholes and different things that they can
do from from the US and it's just kind of the
story of that It's funny at times. I mean, it's
not at all, in any way, a comedy or anything
like that. But I do find Helen Mirren funny throughout
this film. Just the way she speaks, her dialogue,
the way she acts to Ryan Reynolds, I thought
was pretty humorous. But I actually like this
movie a lot more than I think Amanda did. I'm
not a huge Ryan Reynolds fan, but I thought he
was pretty good in this. And I just found the
whole story pretty interesting and intriguing.
I'm sure that there's a lot of people would say
that it's a little cliche or you know cheesy
at times or whatever but didn't really get my
way too much I would probably give this one I'm
gonna be just like Dan and I'd probably say I'd
give this one like a six and a half out of 10,
so I found it favorable. I think it's worth a
watch if you like any of the people that are
in it or if you like kind of looking more at
that aspect of what was going on during the Holocaust
and World War II. So, six and a half for me.
Amanda, what did you think of it? I just found
myself getting a little bored with this movie.
Well, probably quite a bit I found myself getting.
so I don't think I was as high as you. I think
it did have a couple good aspects. Definitely
the feels a couple times. Definitely interesting
to see this particular struggle. Not something
I think you see a lot of in film. And I think
that Ryan Reynolds did play a character that
was... Lot different from what we normally see
him as so I thought that was interesting I give
it I would say probably a four point five five
out of ten just because of how bored I did get
quite a few times All right, so mixed reviews
for woman and gold. What about the other one
that you saw on your own? I did get a chance
to check out hot pursuit finally I think I was
a huge fan of The Heat. I still am. I will re
-watch that a ton of times and laugh just as
much each time. I feel like this movie definitely
wanted to do what The Heat did, but failed. I
think Reese Witherspoon was really weak. Her
character was awkward, not relatable, not well
done. I think Sofia Bagaria, what her name is?
I think she did really well, but I think that
was definitely in her comfort zone, in her wheelhouse
as far as how she acts. I think she steps up
a little bit for this film. Good for her. I think
the film as a whole though was pretty poopy.
I'm gonna give it a 4 out of 10. I did get a
couple laughs out of it, but it definitely didn't...
didn't live up to the heat caliber by any means.
All right, so you're not on board with Hot Pursuit.
No. All right, that's where you draw the line
on those films. I do, yeah. Dan, anything else
that you saw besides your homework? No, all I
have is my homework left. All right, we have
one film left to talk about then, and I guess
in this whole discussion it will be also the
most positive we're probably going to be. out
of all of the films that we're talking about
so far, and that would be 2015's Straight Outta
Compton. Amanda, let's start with you. What did
you think? How did you like it? What were the
good, the bad, and the ugly on this one? I think
it had all of the above. The good, the bad, and
the ugly. I think it showed all those aspects
of their life and their struggle up to this point.
And I think that... It definitely struck a lot
of emotional chords and I have a new rule if
dr. Dre is crying in a movie I'm gonna have to
freaking cry in that movie at that time. I think
that How many times will that rule come into
play? I don't know. You never know So I I think
that I enjoyed this movie. I think it was a touch
long, but it definitely Could have been fleshed
out in a As far as their relationships go, all
of a sudden they have wives and girlfriends and
things like that. They didn't really flesh that
out too much, but they did show the permissiveness
activity and their partying and they were really
true to form, I think, to their stories and the
NWA struggle and how that came about and how
politically... Tied up everything was too. So
I think that everything that it wanted to do
it definitely did and I I've been thinking a
lot about this movie I haven't seen a lot of
buzz about this movie and I would definitely
give it a 7 out of 10 not a perfect score I think
it did have some some holes, but it it Did what
it sought out to do? Yeah, I mean I think You
have an interesting project here because this
was produced by Dr. Dre and by Ice Cube. And
so you kind of go in not knowing how much of
a spin they're going to put on it or how true
to form this is going to be. But I think one
of the biggest bonuses was that up to a point
they did show the good and bad sides of a lot
of the things going on here. I'll get more into
that in a second. I think probably the strongest
thing about this film is the performances. the
performances by these guys that are playing Dr.
J and ice cube and easy and even uh... uh...
the couple of the other guys should make i think
that i think the casting was so spot on it's
ridiculous yeah i mean i we did not realize that
ice cube's son was playing ice cube we just thought
he looked exactly how did they find someone who
looks so much like him that's his son uh... but
everybody the only casting mistake i think in
the whole thing and i will call that out i guess
spoiler alert if you don't know that there's
gonna be cameos for multiple rappers involved
in this uh... in this movie would be who on earth
cast that guy as Snoop Dogg? Snoop Dogg is a
giant. He's like six foot eighty. He is super
tall and I've never seen him on TV or anything
where he doesn't tower over everybody. And they
cast somebody that was like five, six to play
Snoop Dogg, I swear. I don't quite understand
that one, but everybody else that they cast was
absolutely phenomenal as far as the look goes.
And then those main guys really pulled off the
actual performance. Paul Giamatti was good as
well. So I think that was one strength. I think
the biggest... thing for me like I said as well
as probably a bunch of other people is just the
learning about more about this the intrigue the
educational aspect of kind of getting to see
how it came together who was doing this like
I never knew which one was writing the lyrics
I never knew which one was you know doing each
aspect of it and kind of behind the scenes who
who should get more credit for this or that so
I thought that all was very interesting where
I knock it down maybe a peg or two it probably
does come from the fact that that Dr. Dre and
Ice Cube were somewhat producing it because I
think they did kind of pull a couple things to
not show themselves in the worst light. I think
they touch on a couple of these things but they
don't necessarily show some of maybe the more
gruesome details of it. I don't think you'd come
out of this movie and realize that Dr. Dre threw
some female reporter through a door and basically...
abused the crap out of her. Like, you'd come
out of that movie and think, no, he wouldn't
do that if you didn't know anything more about
it. And just some of the other aspects of that,
like you were saying, as far as the development
of their families and girlfriends and wives,
they just kind of basically appear and you kind
of got to put two and two together to figure
out who's who. So I think there's some of that.
And I think the other thing that a lot of biopics
sometimes struggle with is trying to cover too
much of a time span. and so a lot of the stuff
does get maybe a little bit glossed over and
I think maybe if they would have focused a little
bit more on certain aspects and kind of flushed
it out a little bit more it would get even higher
score for me but all that said I still thoroughly
enjoyed the experience of watching the film and
I would give this one a seven and a half out
of ten. I had to go just a little bit above you,
so 7 .5 out of 10 for me. I definitely recommend
this to anybody, whether you like NWA or not,
whether you were exposed to it as a kid or not.
It's something that I knew who they were, but
I didn't know any of the songs and I didn't know
any of the behind the scenes and I still enjoyed
it, so I would recommend it to just about anybody
out there. Alright, I think that means it is
time. for the homework assignments. Dan, I made
a flub last week and tried to assign you something
from 1971. I apologize for that. Rotten Tomatoes
certainly had the title and then a parenthesis
that said 2012 and I didn't realize. that they
did that at times and must have been some type
of date of some other release of that. I don't
know, I got fooled. So we let you switch it to
one of my other choices. So how was the homework
assignment and what did you watch for the people
that are listening? So yeah, he had a few choices
and I ended up going with one that oddly enough
I had the DVD of which was another year which
I got years ago and from like when Blockbuster
is going out of business and you have to watch.
So now I had a reason to and it's directed and
written by Mike Lee. uh who is someone who I
really need to kind of catch up with because
I've not watched a lot of his stuff but the premise
of it is that uh Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen
play this really happy couple that uh that kind
of uh have four separate account uh accounters
with with family members each for one season
and like basically these family members kind
of bring their problems and their issues and
it's just a lot of uh conversations and the one
movie that i was reminded of it's like the british
version of ostrich oasis county but maybe not
as heavy as dramatic but it it does get uh it
does get kind of uh uh melodramatic but not not
not in a bad way there's a lot of drama going
on here but you know some people mentioned it
as a comedy and there are comedic parts points
to it, but I would think it's more of a dramedy.
It's a mixture of it. But it's a very British
film in that aspect. It does not hide its British
roots, and it feels like a lot of references
and a lot of what's being said would make more
sense if you're a lot more aware of that culture.
But I found it's a really great place of life
film. These characters feel rich. The dialogue
is great. It's really smartly written. the layout
of the different four seasons I think it makes
a lot of sense when you really need to know these
characters so anything the comedy does add a
nice bit of levity to it so I just found it really
delightful is the word that kind of came to mind.
I just, I thought the only thing it lacked was
kind of focus. It was kind of all over the place
at times. So, uh, but like I wasn't triggered.
I definitely, like I said, need to, I get to
watch Mr. Turner, which I think he did last year,
which I've heard good things about. So I would,
I would recommend this. It's probably the best
thing I've watched in a while. And I would give
it like a 7 .5, eight out of 10. And, uh, I'm
actually really glad I finally had a reason to
watch the DVD. So. Alright, so we succeeded in
at least allowing you to watch something that
was sitting on your shelf. Exactly, collecting
dust, yeah. Yeah, which there's a lot of films
on my shelf that are doing the same thing, so
I need to do some of that as well. Alright, so
that was your best reviewed film of the two weeks.
We'll have to try to repeat that with our homework
assignment for next week. The homework assignment
that you gave us, you gave us a choice again
of a bunch of different films and Amanda picked
the Paul Rudd joint and that would have been
Prince Avalanche. And this had Paul Rudd and
Emile Hirsch in it. It is a story of these two
guys who are employed as road, I don't know what
the technical term is, road stripers. I'm going
to go with road strippers, who are painting stripes
on a road. These road crews, as they call them.
In an environment that has been obviously besieged
by wildfires and kind of destroyed a lot from
that. And it's just kind of the story of their
interactions with each other as they work, I
believe what was going to be like a summer job,
basically, or a seasonal job. And he is also,
Emile Hirsch is the brother of Paul Rudd's girlfriend
during the film. So Dan, you've seen this film,
I believe, right? Yes. Alright, I wanted to start
by getting your thoughts and opinions on the
film and then we'll kind of go after that. It's
been a while since I watched it, but I just thought
it was, I don't know, welcoming is like the word
that kind of comes to mind. And it's a movie
that I kind of like, because I tend to like movies
that are... have less focus on plot more focus
on characters and I like the characters and I
thought Emile Hirsch and Paul Rudd were a lot
of fun together and had some good comedic moments
and also one of my favorite scenes of the year
that this came out was the scene when they're
going to the rebel in like the burnt -out house
and I think too there's been a lot of talk about
it's if what's really happening in the movie
and if there's maybe some more supernatural or
if you know perchance maybe they're making a
lot of the stuff up and maybe they're like the
last two people on earth or something like that
but I don't know I ended up just really liking
it it's not you know an all -time great film
or amazing but I thought like it's just it goes
that easy for me at least when I watched it This
is an interesting one too because it has a definite
split on Rotten Tomatoes. I believe it has like
an 83 or an 85 as far as critics go and it has
like a 51 or a 53 as far as audiences go. So
there's definitely a split crew out there. We'll
start with Amanda. What did you think about Prince
Avalanche and Emile Hirsch and Paul Rudd? I don't
think I'm gonna go sugarcoat this too much. I
did not like it at all. I was freaking bored
the whole time. I really wanted to like it. I
thought that it could be cool, but I think the
dialogue just... was super watered down and I
couldn't get much out of it. I couldn't really
relate to either of the characters whatsoever.
I don't think a lot happened. I think that it
was kind of confusing because I couldn't pin
down what was really happening, what was a figment
of their pill -popping drunken state. I didn't
really know what the point of a lot of what they
were doing was. I think that Paul Rudd's character
was probably the most intriguing. And I found
that trying to figure him out during this movie
is what kept me going. Other than that, I was
just kind of waiting for it to be done. I didn't
get a lot out of this movie at all. I'm gonna
give it a 2 out of 10. I think the best scene
for me in the movie is... the opening scene when
they put the title up, but they used the tapping
of the hammer to kind of spell out the name of
the movie itself. I don't think there was a lot
in this that I could really get on board with.
All right. I think I'd start with the positives.
And the positives for me, I do think that it's
a real good There's nothing wrong with acting
in this film. There's nothing wrong with the
acting of Paul Rudd. There's nothing wrong with
the acting of Emile Hirsch. And I'm going to
forget the name of the older gentleman that appears
recurring throughout the film. But there was
nothing wrong with any of those acting performances.
I think those were spot on. I think they were
definitely doing what those characters were being
asked to do. And I can see Dan, too, as far as
the idea that this is a character piece and that
you're... on this journey with these two characters
and kind of learning the ins and outs about them
personally, as well as their interactions with
each other and kind of what they're striving
for or how it changes the arc throughout the
film. A couple things I was a little bit thrown
off by slightly is, oh, before I get to that,
one other thing. I like the dialogue as far as
the line about the... comparison between love
and a ghost and how I think they say like love
is like a ghost you hear everybody talking about
it but not you know but it's very rare to actually
find it and stuff like that and I thought that
was a pretty clever piece of dialogue I was a
little thrown off by the whole aspect of the
of the fire of the fires and the wildfires and
all of that because they put that on there in
the opening text and they obviously refer to
it in the scene, Dan, that you're talking about
with the walking through the rubble and etc.
And I think it does play a part in kind of what
you guys are alluding to with trying to figure
out what's real and what's not. But I think if
you take that opening text out about the setting
of the stage of the wildfires, and if you take
that one scene from the rubble out of the film,
I don't think you would watch this film and at
the end have any idea that that was a part of
the story or a part of the setting. Maybe I'd
have to sit on that a little bit more, but I
just wasn't sure about that being a connective
tissue or a connective string throughout the
whole film, but maybe I missed some stuff that
I should have gotten out of it. Like I said,
I think some of it... and trying to figure out
what's real, what's not, etc. might have sidetracked
my brain during parts of it. But I just kind
of wasn't sure of that element being included
and what the point of that was or if that had
anything to do with the story besides setting
the kind of tone and the atmosphere that's going
on there. I did find part of it intriguing like
you guys were talking about when they are walking
through the rubble and we actually had to rewind.
It feels weird saying rewind when you're on a
DVD or Blu -ray to me. It's not like the old
VCR where you're actually winding something.
But we had to backtrack a couple different times,
especially in that last scene where the older
lady is getting in the truck to figure out if
she was visible in the entire sequence or if
she disappeared at some point and trying to figure
out who's seeing her and who's not. So I think
there are some intriguing elements that kind
of lend to what you were saying, Dan, kind of
the whole... question of trying to figure out
like are these the last two people on earth?
Is everything pretend? Is everything a figment
of their imagination or is everything actually
happening like it is and are the old people see
now? So I mean I think there's some intriguing
questions there. I think my biggest problem with
the film is I have no problem with character
pieces. I have no problem watching one or two
characters go throughout a film in a certain
setting and kind of following their arc and learning
about them. But in order to do that, I think
I need a little bit more clever dialogue or a
little bit more of a thematic presence or something
from an emotional standpoint that's going to
pull a chord with me. And I didn't get that from
this. I can see how you're kind of saying it's
easy to swallow. If I'm going to be on the trip
for four or two people in this kind of secluded
environment and just do the character study,
I want to either have a thematic element that
I'm intrigued by, have some type of emotional
connection to something that's going on, or be
at least entertained with some clever, witty,
unique dialogue. And I didn't feel like I got
any of that. See, I would disagree. a lot with
the dialogue aspects. I think there are a lot,
and I think it's a lot about what's not said.
And I think there is a lot of great themes here,
relationships, and how we deal with that. And
I think, too, it's very atmospheric. And you
say that there isn't any ties together with the
whole fires. And I think that, to me, is very
much what it's about. It's basically looking
into what's the importance of, like, our relationships
with one another. When everything's gone in that
aspect. It's not a movie that is about plot.
It's not a movie that's about necessarily narrative.
And I think it's getting into just, when you
trim that away, what are you left with? And I
think that's what it gets into. And I love how
it leaves it open and there's a lot of questions
there and it doesn't point things out to you.
Yeah, I like that aspect of it as well. I mean,
yeah. No, I like that part too. I like that it
leaves it open for interpretation. That's probably
my favorite part of the whole film. Outside of
the, you know, I think the performances, like
I said, are really spot on as well. So, I mean,
I think it has elements, but for me it just wasn't,
I didn't find the, I get what you're saying as
far as the connection there with the wildfires
and everything being gone and kind of what's
important in life, what's not, you know, as this
relationship, you know. goes away, etc., and
kind of dealing with what's left in the aftermath.
For both characters, I kind of get all that.
I just was hoping for maybe a little bit more
along the way to get me something that I could
emotionally or personally connect to, and I just
couldn't find that connection was my problem.
I'm not saying it's not going to be there for
somebody else. Somebody else might find the connection
or be more invested in it, but me personally,
I just couldn't latch on to something to make
it a fun experience along the way. way besides
watching the acting and trying to figure out
what was really going on. That was my main take
on it. Amanda, what did you give this one? Two
out of ten. Two out of ten. You forgot already.
I wanted to make sure. I think I'm probably right
in that range. Maybe a three. out of 10 for me,
just because like I said, I just didn't find
something I could latch on to. I know, Dan, you're
disappointed. I'm sorry. Hey, you're right on
pace with all the critics. It's got 85 % on Rotten
Tomatoes, so we're definitely in the minority.
And like I said, I think if it speaks to you
personally or... I had a feeling you're not gonna
like it, because I know you really... This is
kind of the films you... Because I know you tend
to dislike movies that don't. tend to have a
cohesive narrative, or that's not their focal
point. So that was kind of my concern going into
it. But I thought I'd give it a chance. No, I
think it was definitely worth a shot. And I was
interested to see it's another side of Paul Rudd,
too, that we're not as exposed to. I mean, I
think he's done other roles to show the non -comedic
side, but it's not something you get a lot of.
So I thought it was fun to watch. to see that
side of it and I was definitely intrigued on
it and I think it was an interesting film to
watch and I'm still, like I said, I don't think
I'm opposed to films that shy away from the narrative
but it's gotta be the right one I guess for some
reason, I don't know. I want you to keep trying,
I'll find one and I'm gonna watch some of the
other stuff that I probably... Poop on the other
stuff that the directors or or whoever have done,
but I'm open to watching more of it. So Eventually,
I'll break through. So what did you have for
us for next week? Oh now I'm worried Don't be
worried. We're up for watching anything Except
for the Serbian film. I'm not watching that.
I have not seen that You said you're a Matt Mickelson
fan, correct? Yes, so I have a movie with Matt
Mickelson. I have one Uh, starring Jack Black,
uh, and let's see which one to, and since we
are doing action adventure, I also have, there's
not much great action adventure available on
Netflix, but there are some good foreign films.
There's a samurai film and then there's a martial
arts epic. And then there is a kind of a Korean
Western, if that makes any sense, but it's a,
it's a Korean remake of a classic American Western.
Alright, so we got martial arts, Jack Black,
Mads Mikkelsen, and what was the other one at
the end? In a martial arts epic. It's a story,
let's say it loosely involves Bruce Lee. Well,
no, I wouldn't even say that. It's kind of a...
It's a martial arts epic, but more in, say, pre
-World War II time. Gotcha. Amanda? Which one
appeals to you the most? Well, I got to speak
last time, so you can go ahead and make this
time. I'm really tempted to do one of the martial
arts ones just to try to get some more exposure
to that, but I'm going to go with the Mads Mikkelsen
film. Have you seen The Hunt? Yes, I have seen
The Hunt. I don't know if Amanda probably hasn't
seen it. I would be willing to watch it again
for her because she has not seen it, but I have
seen it. And I gave it really positive reviews.
So I'll just say that was it and that one you
liked. There is another Matt Mickelson film,
but I think you would hate it. I don't think
you'd even come out in this decade. That's Vahal
Rising. Isn't that on Netflix, too? Yeah, it
is. I think I started to watch that. I think
you would give that a negative score. How about
one starring Michael B. Jordan? Yeah, sure, why
not. Have you seen Fruitvale Station? I have.
I gotta get you the list of my movies. Have you
seen Fruitvale Station? What? Fruitvale Station.
No. Alright, well we're gonna watch one of those
and let Amanda get exposed to one of those for
sure. And maybe I'll give you one if you get
a chance. Go with The Good, The Bad, and The
Weird. It's a Korean remake of The Good, The
Bad, and The Ugly. All right. We've got a bunch
of different films that we can tackle here. That
sounds good. I am going to take a chance and
say that since you have not been out seeing a
lot of films this year, that you have not seen
this 2015, I believe it's a 2015 release, so
I'm going to go with one from this current year.
It is available on Redbox, I believe. It's also
out on DVD, so it's available at any type of
video rental store or... Like I said, I know
it's available on Redbox and I'm pretty sure
you frequent those from time to time. So I'm
not giving you a choice this week unless you're
not able to get to a Redbox and I can try to
find something streaming for you. But that would
be also a Mads Mikkelsen film. So unless you've
seen this and I just didn't know about it, it's
one that we're actually currently watching and
then it would give us something that all three
of us had also watched for our next episode.
We're not quite through. Is it The Thrillvation?
Yes. I've seen it, yeah. Oh, you have seen it.
Okay. All right. You threw me off. All right.
Well, the other one was going to be one of the
ones that was on my list from your choices that
you picked from last week. And you actually referenced
it because it's also from, it has the connection
to the film that you saw this week. And I just
have to check to see if it's streaming. But that
would be Mr. Turner. I have not seen that. Okay.
And that is from the same director, right? Yeah,
that is. Okay, so you said you wanted to catch
up with more from him. So here's an opportunity
to catch up with another one. And I believe last
I checked it was available on Amazon, but I can't
say that it currently is, but it was when I checked.
I think it's in red box too, so it's fine. Okay.
All right. So Mr. Turner for you. And we got
a bunch of them that we can see. I'm interested
in all of them, actually, and seeing that man's
reaction to them. So, all right, coming up this
next week, we have the Blu -ray release of Aloha.
That's pretty much it. And we already talked
about the theater releases with American Ultra,
Sinister 2, Hitman, Agent 47, a couple other
ones that might be going straight to video on
demand would be Learning to Drive, I believe
that's Ben Kingsley in there, Digging for Fire,
Some Kind of Beautiful, She's Funny That Way,
and Shanghai. Dan, is there anything in any of
those that intrigues you in the least? I like
Drinking Buddies a good amount. I like Drinking
Buddies. I did not like Happy Christmas. Yeah,
Happy Christmas was a little bit of a... Man,
that movie was depressing as all. I like Jake
Johnson, so I'm hoping that he'll get it back
with Digging for Fire. Amanda, your pick, Hitman?
I don't know if I want Hitman or Sinister more.
I'm gonna go with Hitman just because I think
Sinister is gonna make me pee myself a little
bit. Have you watched The First Sinister or have
you yet to watch it? Yeah, it creeps me out way
hardcore. And then what she does is she watches
them by herself. Because Kevin is too chicken
shit to watch them with me. You always watch
them before I'm even home, which is a good thing.
If I had to pick, I guess I'll take my chances
and watch Aloha. I know it's got terrible reviews
from a lot of people, but there's been some good...
semi -good reviews on it, and I just want to
see what everyone's talking about and make my
own opinion on it. I'm sure it'll be bad, but
I'd watch Aloha, I guess. Plus, if you look at
the movies that have been becoming available
to rent or to watch in August, there is nothing
to watch. So, I guess it's literally marketed
as the biggest release in August for the video
store. That's that Dan any questions for the
listeners this week I guess Is there any chance
that see like you asked us the question if Lego
Batman has any chances being as good as the original
Lego movie Maybe that would be a good one for
people. Yeah That'd be good. What's your anticipation
compared to the Lego movie for those people that
liked it or didn't like it? Are you looking more
or less forward to Batman Lego movie and what
chances does it have at the box office or critically
to stack up to that one? And then, as always,
we'll take a quick second to pimp out our Quentin
Tarantino retrospective. It is coming to a close,
so by the time this airs, we will just have the
Django Unchained episode, and then our final
episode where we will be doing some fun wrap
-up of the entire... process and kind of how
we've gone from there and I think the only other
piece of business Dan we got to take care of
before we get out of here is taking a look at
the time capsule results. So I'm gonna pull it
up and get the up -to -date just to see if there
was any last -minute voting that took place because
I know originally there was a little bit of a
gap and then as each day went it was closing
in tighter and tighter between all of us. So
I'd be interested to see what the final results
are. And the total over the 10 or 11 days that
we had, we got 63 votes. I was somewhat impressed
that we had that many people chime in. So definitely
thanks to all of those that voted out there.
And at 24 % of the votes would be Dan, your time
capsule, with 15 votes. And then we had Amanda
with 22 votes at 35%. And then my time capsule
had 26 votes for 41%. So 26 to 22 to 15 would
have been the final tally. Amanda almost creeped
up and took you. I feel like mine, I feel like
it's a cheap win because I feel like I just have
like a couple like uh, I put Lion King in there
and I think that got me like five points. Yeah,
Lion King kicking back to the future in Star
Wars, I think, with the keys. I just have more
name recognition. You should have just put Transformers
in there, you probably would have swept it. Right,
I would have had like 60 votes and you guys would
have had one each from yourselves. No, I'm just
kidding. Amanda and I. we're testing it and didn't
know for ourselves, so that doesn't count. So
it should be 25 to 21 to 15. Anyway. Alright,
that's it for this week. Thanks as always for
