CINEMA GEEKS
Jurassic World Review

About this Episode
Starscream here, and I am the lord and master
of the Geekcast Radio Network. Don't tell Megatron.
Today on episode 59 of The Cinema Geeks, we discuss
who we meet to cast as the next James Bond. We
talk about the tradition of box office record
breakers. We have casting news for you for Ghostbusters
and Star Wars. We have tons of trailer talk for
movies like The Martian, The Walk, Everest, and
Bridge of Spies. In our main attraction, we look
at the record holder itself. Jurassic World.
All that and more coming up on episode 59 with
the Cinema Geeks. That's right, it is episode
59 of the cinema geeks and as you heard we have
a lot of stuff to talk about So we're gonna get
right into it. But first as a little mode of
introduction I am one of your hosts optimus solo
with me today is movie revolt Dan. Hello. Hey,
how's it going? Not too bad and will be joining
us shortly will be hard candy Mandy She is not
here at the moment, but she will be joining in
as soon as she is able so keep baited breath
for that so we will be the full team here very
shortly but before we get to all the good stuff
to talk about today, Dan, how has your week been
going? It's been going well. I've actually had
a lot of family come down over the weekend. I
have my brother -in -law and his girlfriend came
to visit. We did a few things with a nice little
food truck gathering which was a lot of fun and
then my brother and his wife and my Two nieces
and nephew came down. So it was a huge family
affair I went to the aquarium and all that good
stuff. So it's been been quite busy the last
last week or so Nice. What kind of food truck
was it? Well, they had a few of them I went with
a Greek food truck got myself a gyro or gyro
or whatever you say it nice Hiro, I've heard
too, so I don't know. Hiro, I think that's it.
Yeah, so actually interesting because I used
to work with someone who owned a Greek restaurant.
They said it didn't really matter. And they were
like legitimately Greek, so I was like, all right,
well if they don't care, then I don't think I
do. It just tastes delicious. I will make a point
to say it the different way every time I say
it. Exactly, exactly. But it was interesting
because instead of giving out names or having
names, they would give you a playing card. And
they would call you by your playing card, whatever
you're given. I guess that would be a little
bit different. But it was just really hot, so
it kind of came and left. But it was a pretty
good deal, because it's like 15 bucks, and it's
a beer tent, and it's unlimited beer. But I'm
old, so I don't drink that much, because I just
get tired and fall asleep. Right. How's your
week been going? Not too bad. You mentioned it
being hot. And it was either hot or raining.
I think I heard on one of the news stations at
some point this week that our area set a at least
for our area we set some type of record for the
most flash flood warnings in like a certain amount
of time period i don't know what the time period
was a week or a month or something like that
maybe for the year so far but we have like three
different flash flood warnings in the last couple
weeks so it was either raining or it was hot
and what happened was i had a bunch of yard work
to do and i had like one day where i was actually
off where it wasn't raining And so I was forced
to do it all on that day and it was probably
the hottest day so far this year. And so I was
like up on ladders cleaning out gutters and mowing
my yard and I think I took like three or four
like breaks which I don't ever do. I'm just like
I gotta go inside and do some air conditioning
for a minute before I fall off a ladder. Outside
of that I had some fun experience at work. We
lost power for six hours. Nice. So that's always
fun. It was the most bizarre power outage ever
though because literally half... of the business
had power and half of it didn't. But it made
absolutely no rhyme or reason or logical sense
as to what had power and what didn't. I literally
had two computers sitting next to each other
on a counter and one of them I had no power to
and one of them I had power to. And it was like
that throughout the whole place. The biggest
thing was though that all of the important things
were the ones that we had no power for. So it
was an interesting night. to say the least but
at one o 'clock in the morning we got our power
back so no problems there but it made for an
interesting week outside of that just dealing
with the fact that I am running out of time on
my rental car I have I have less than a week
now to use my rental car before I have to start
paying for it so I have to decide at what point
I'm going to be purchasing my replacement car
or how long I'm gonna go without a car so that's
always fun Luckily, Amanda has both her car and
a work van, so there is some wiggle room there,
so we're gonna see how long we can go before
it's time to bite the bullet and buy a new car.
The car that just got wrecked is literally the
only car that I've ever owned, and I had it for
14 years, so it's been a long time since I had
the... to deal with the idea of getting a new
car so I've got to get back in the game and figure
out how you do that. So that's the fun for me
but outside of that it's been a pretty normal
week. As we do every week we like to start with
the box office and our predictions from last
week and see what happened with those and then
make predictions for the next week. Apparently
I will apologize. I did not realize that my prediction
was gonna be as much of a slam dunk as it was.
I thought I was taking a chance. If you look
at the different movies that have released so
far this year, not many of them have made over
70 million in opening weekend, guys. Not many
of them. Fast and Furious, Avengers 2. I don't
know if there's been anything else that's made
over 70 million in opening weekend without looking.
So I thought saying, hey, Jurassic World, there's
some hype behind it. It seems like a decent film.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's going
to make more than 70 million. OK. Don't don't
fault me for for being ridiculously low on that
but I so I guess my prediction was correct It
should make more than 70 million Dan your prediction
and something to do with Cinderella, right? Yeah,
it was it was interesting because Cinderella
was like upping its theater count and I was actually
making more money like the increase it's a Rock
stuff was was increasing stuff out like you were
really trying to get that 200 million dollar
mark and it was so close to it. But They did
not quite get there. They're still eight Yeah,
eight hundred thousand away from it. So they
got close, you know, they put a value number
But it looks like they might be giving up because
our theater count is dropping once again So it
looks like you know, I know that you could you
really use that boost for for your for your dream
But unfortunately, I don't know if it's gonna
happen I don't think it's going to either, but
I need them to do exactly what they did this
last week three more whole weeks. That would
be their 17th week in the theater. I don't even
know if it should count at that point. But yeah,
so you just missed yours. And then Amanda tried
for something she was calling her Golden Tux.
Is that the right phrase from the movie? Yeah,
and so she was predicting the top five in order.
She actually got a couple of them in there that
were right But she had entourage being in the
top five and it was not in the top five this
weekend pitch perfect two Went from six back
up to five so that kind of messed her up even
if she had had the right five film So I was the
only one that had something right this week even
though it was seems like a cheap victory overall
so number one coming in this last weekend was
obviously Jurassic World with two hundred and
eight million. That's just mind -boggling. Spy
dropped from number one to number two, down to
15 million. So just a little bit of gap between
the first and the second place. finishers there.
San Andreas went down a spot as well. Insidious
Chapter 3 went down a spot. And then, like I
said, Pitch Perfect 2 actually went up a spot.
So those were your top five. This seems like
a silly question, Dan, but any surprises from
the box office this week? Yeah, I'm surprised
Spy made as much money as he did. No, I can't
believe, like, everything I was looking for,
I was like... world it was gonna do well but
that well is insane to me and I mean I guess
I guess it kind of makes sense when you think
of it because it's A, there's no competition
right now. There's nothing out there. It's a
movie that hits all the quadrants. I think you
can take kids to it for the most part, because
I remember watching the original Jurassic Park
when I was a kid. And there's a huge amount of
nostalgia for the original Jurassic Park. And
you have parents who now have kids who are bringing
them. So I think it's just this perfect storm,
and it ended up just exploding. Now I don't know
about your area in your neck of the woods, but
where I live this also would be the first The
first film released post school all the schools
around us are out now for the summer and I know
some states they go a little bit longer but all
the high schools and stuff like that in my area
have released for the summer so this would have
been the first weekend too where you had, at
least in my area, where you had a little bit
more access for kids to go during the day or
go without fear of having to abide by any type
of school schedule so we had that too and I think
the other thing that this shows us that maybe
people forgot is that I don't think it's going
to matter how many years pass or what time period
we're at. There's always going to be a love for
boys and dinosaurs. Boys love dinosaurs. So if
you put dinosaur movies out there... Usually
it's going to be good and I'm going to say that
and I'm going to stick my foot in my mouth later
if a good dinosaur doesn't do good. But maybe
that being an animated film it doesn't quite
equate. But I just think the wonder of having
these big screen dinosaurs on the big screen
in that type of epic fashion is always going
to have some type of draw to certain demographics.
We're going to get more into Jurassic World later
though so we'll save most of the rest of the
talk for that. I am surprised that... Pitch Perfect
2 went back up a little bit maybe, but the biggest
surprise obviously is the amount of money Jurassic
World made, but we will save that for a little
bit later. We can get into some predictions for
next week. I will start off, and I'm going to
make a very similar prediction. And I don't think
it's a gimme though, so don't give me a hard
time. Even if my prediction sounds almost identical
to last week's, I'm sticking with it, it worked
for me. I'm trying to dig my way out of the cellar.
And my prediction for next week will be the new
film, Inside Out, and I'm gonna put that one
above 70 million as well. So I'm gonna go with
two weeks in a row where we have an opening film
that does higher than 70 million. For... retrospect
that that would make it a pretty successful open
I think that puts it higher than both the Lego
movie and Big Hero 6 opened so it's not a slam
dunk so but that would be my prediction that
that Inside Out is going to make more than 70
million in its first weekend so what about you
Dan? Well, actually I'm gonna I'm gonna see your
inside out prediction I'm gonna raise you a little
bit and you say 70 I'm gonna I'm gonna go back
and if you look at the opening weekend for Toy
Story 3 which I think most people look at it's
probably maybe their Pixar slash really good
movie it made 110 million dollars its opening
weekend and Considering there's not that much
out left out and you know Pixar has been on a
downward trend of people been dying for a good
Pixar movie I'm gonna say that that uh... inside
out going to make more money as opening weekend
in Toy Story 3. Wow, that's a good one. See,
I didn't go back that far. I just looked at uh...
I looked at Big Hero 6 and the Lego movie uh...
as my comparables and the Toy Story 3 probably
is a better predictor so uh... that makes me
mad I didn't go with my other my other prediction,
which is going to be a unique one that we hadn't
done before. So I think you get bonus points
if you beat me on this one. So I think if you
win, I can't win. So I'll take from 70 to 100.
If it's more than Toy Story 3, I lose. I will
concede that right now and you'll be the only
winner in that. part of the the prediction so
uh... amanda what about you what do you got for
box office prediction next week uh... we got
inside out coming out we have uh... mangle horn
which will probably be more of a limited release
uh... infinitely polar bear probably another
limited release uh... dope uh... and obviously
the films that came out this last week what do
you think Well, I'm not as cool as you guys so
I am not even gonna go there with how much these
movies gross I'm gonna do a super lame prediction
and say that Jurassic World stays at number one
and inside out comes in at number two really
Interesting that would be that would be an intriguing
result and that would definitely make the other
prediction that I was gonna do Accurate, but
I'm gonna save that for another time. So I'm
not gonna give anything away. So those are the
predictions for for next week Getting into the
news is what we usually do next, so we will be
getting into some of your main news stories.
We have a bunch of them. We're not going to cover
all of them due to time restraints and whatnot,
so basically we're going to let you guys go back
and forth and pick a headline, and then we'll
go through as many as we can in the time that
we have. So looking at the different headlines
from the script, Amanda... Ladies get to go first
usually around here. So is there is there a headline
that you would like to start off with from this
past week of news? I think the one I was most
excited about is Thor is going to be Janine in
the Ghostbusters reboot So Chris Hemsworth has
signed on for the receptionist role Director
Paul Feig, is that what his last name is? Yes.
Well, he announced via Twitter and I quote our
receptionist with a picture of Chris Hemsworth.
So... Chris Hemsworth will have a shirt on in
this movie. You realize that, right? Not the
whole time. Chances are that he's at least gonna
get a glass of water spilled on him and he's
gonna have to take that off. It's highly likely.
Or like one of the girls is gonna be using like
one of the... Like a fire hose. No, like what
was the packs that they had? Proton pack? Proton
pack. One of the girls is gonna have like the
proton pack and accidentally like suck his shirt
off or something like that? Okay. But what if
he gets slimed? I'm still going to think it's
okay. I don't know if I can comment on this.
Dan, what do you think about Chris Hemsworth
joining the cast of Ghostbusters Reboot? Interesting.
I mean, he's a pretty funny guy. I mean, I think
he has a good sense of humor, even in Thor. I
think he has a good grasp on that. So very much
the opposite of the original Ghostbusters, but
it could be fun. I'm going to guess that he ends
up having some sort of love affair with Melissa
McCarthy because that would be wacky and silly.
All right. Dan, you're up next then. What's the
headline that you would like to investigate a
little bit further? Well, we teased it upfront,
so why not go with who might be the next James
Bond? Alright, so based on the article, you obviously
have a bunch of names thrown out there. What
would be, ask it two ways here. What would be
your preference out of the names thrown out,
or someone, if you're genius enough to come up
with someone that's not listed, and not just
who you want, but on the second part of that,
who do you think is most likely? The guy I've
been pointing to as of late, I think would be
James Bond, who was in Inimitation game and I
think he has kind of like that good sensibility
is Matthew good You know, he's kind of one of
those actors has been on a lot of things I know
they named a few people that I think would be
interesting, you know Idris Elba would be kind
of fun, but I think Matthew good is Has that
like old -school type of bond that I think he'd
be more so like the like a Timothy Dalton Maybe
I don't know but that's kind of my thought process
on it Okay. Amanda, do you have a preference
on who you can envision as the next James Bond?
My notes say new Bond has to be Colin Firth.
All right. He would make like an interesting
like Roger Moore type because he is like around
the same age as Emma was saying around when Moore
got the part, so. Yeah, and obviously the other
part of the article was talking about the possibility
of the first redhead. James Bond with Damian
Lewis, the name being mentioned for that, so
we'll have to see if that's the route they go.
I personally think Idris Elba, maybe that's just
because I'm a huge Idris Elba fan, but I think
that would be a lot of fun. Is that anything
to do with the fact that you appoint for him?
No, Dan, how dare you? Yes, it is. No, I also
just think it would be fun to actually put him
in a movie where he actually is a main character
and not keep teasing me with movies that they
say he's in that he's not really in. So, Dunman,
not to be mentioned here. All right, well, for
my first one... Let's just let's get the the
sad news out of the way first Dan I know you
kind of talked about this a little bit in length
I'm talking in circles, but I think it would
be We'd be silly if we're talking about movie
news as a podcast and we don't mention it. So
obviously we saw the passing of another big actor
in Hollywood this past week and Christopher Lee
and obviously that's that's a career that has
spanned a lot of decades and he's been a lot
of different characters, especially a lot of
classic and cool villains. So Dan, I was wondering
if, I don't think you mentioned it in your conversation
there, but do you have a favorite Christopher
Lee character that he played? Even though I don't
really love the movie all that much. I would
probably say scarabunga in the man with the golden
gun I think it's like one of the best bond villains
that or probably Saruman in in Lord of the Rings
Okay, you stole you stole the one that would
be for me though. It would definitely be Saruman
for me But that's not to say that he hasn't had
some some cool Some cool roles outside of that
Amanda you have a preference or? Familiar with
Christopher Lee? All I can think of is Saruman.
I know there's at least one or two more characters
when I was reading it, but... Count Dooku? Yes.
Yeah, I can get down to Dooku. That sounds weird.
And bad. I don't know how to respond to that.
But obviously, like, an iconic person in the
world of movies, and I don't know if anyone quite
played villains like he did then. No, just the
variety and the longevity, I mean... someone
from Dracula to, you know, Dooku. I mean, there's
certainly similarities with them, but, like,
I think he definitely, like, he played that role,
and I think a lot of actors today maybe are hesitant
to get known for doing a certain thing, but I
think when you're so good at it, like him, it's
hard not to be. Yeah, I think that, too, but,
yeah, he will definitely be missed, and unfortunately,
the interwebs, the Twitter world and the world
of the internet apparently doesn't... 100 % know
who Christopher Lee is. I don't know if you saw
this but there was one article out there that
was literally listing all of the different tweets
and Facebook posts that were like rest in peace
Christopher Lee and then they would have a link
to like Ian McKellen or to like somebody that
was not Christopher Lee and it was funny because
you can like go in and start reading the conversations
and they start getting attacked by like other
people that see it and they're like you know
that's not Christopher Lee right and they're
like yeah he is. So terrible. Not trying to make
light of it, but there's a lot of idiots out
there. So yes, back to you, Amanda. Is there
another headline that you'd like to bring up?
Yeah, MTV has unveiled the new mask for their
Screen TV series. And first of all, how did I
not know about this project happening? Not really
sure when it came about, but I have been ignorant
up until now to this article. was read earlier
today, so it's supposed to air later this month,
June 30th, and they finally put out a picture
of this new mask and they said that it strikes
out into new territory. I saw it, it's terrifying.
I am creeped out by it. I love the original screen
movies, big Wes Craven fan. 1996 is when the
movies started to come out. So I'm not really
sure if he's directing this show. I mean, it
sounded like he had some kind of hand in the
story. So I'm not sure if he's directing it or
not. So I need to do some more research and figure
out what's really happening. But the release
of this picture of this mask, I am freaked out.
And I want to watch it. Look at that thing. I
didn't know much about, well, the listeners can't
look at it. Talking to you. Okay. I don't know
about the whole scream TV series I didn't know
about it either and obviously it's a TV series,
but since it's based on a movie That's why we're
talking about it, but I don't know isn't the
mask like Too iconic? Well, like the mask, that
is Scream. That's synonymous with those films.
I get the reasoning that they're saying is that
it's not going to have the same characters as
the movies, so you can't have the same mask.
There's so many different ways. Since when has
logic stopped a horror film from doing something?
But the reasoning behind it, the new mask is
cool and scary and takes... the series into a
new direction. It also ties into the story, which
I won't give away, is what Wes Craven said about
it. Yeah, I just don't buy it, and I don't think
it's necessary to. I just, like, you can put
the same mask, and you can say, like, the relative
of somebody who came across it, or you can have
them find the mask somewhere. With American Horror
Story... and series like that coming out, they
need to bump up the wow factor, the scare factor.
Nobody's gonna be scared of the ghost face mask
anymore, and this new mask is friggin' terrifying.
Yeah, but to me it just looks too much like the
mask that you would see in the Jason film. It's
too much like the hockey mask. It's a combination
between the two of the Shatner mask and the hockey
mask. I don't know, I'm not a fan. Dan, what
do you think? Well, I kind of get why they are
changing it. Because I think it's something like,
you know, you had the scary movie film. So I
think they forever made that mask not scary now.
So it's hard to kind of evoke the same emotion
that you got from that originally. And the new
mask does look kind of creepy. So it looks, you
know, it has that still look to it. Disturbing
I I just don't know if we need screaming TV series
per se But I'm obviously not the the audience
since it's on MTV and I don't know the last time
I watched MTV because I'm an old fogey so See,
I think they lost their chance there. They could
have done a little meta moment where they acknowledged
that the original mask wasn't scary enough, like
they found it or whatever, and they're like,
yeah, but this is cheesy. You mean, they might
even try that, you know? They might actually
have it where it's not working, so they change
masks and stuff. Then I'd be all for it. Then
that fits in the horror genre for me. Cheesy
and... No matter what they do with the mask,
you are never going to watch this anyway, so
calm yourself. Probably true. Alright, Dan, that
brings it to you. You got a headline you want
to bring up next? Well, going the opposite realm
of Scream, the TV series, why not a remake for
Kindergarten Cop? Which seems unnecessary on
every level. That was one of the funnier headlines
I came across this week, for sure. But hey Arnold's
on the comeback, right? He's been on the comeback
for a while yet. He hasn't got there Apparently
this is the title of the article kindergarten
cop remake in development at Universal Pictures
So it would be with Arnold that would be I I
think that would be the thing here, it's saying
- No, The Force Negus Replacement will be a leading
man type with an Indian sidekick named Sanjeev.
Is that real? This has gotta be a joke. That
is legit. This has gotta be a joke. But it is
going to be, apparently, a direct -to -DVD sequel.
Well, Sanjeev's getting direct -to -DVD. Is this
gonna be done by WWE Films? Oh lord, if you keep
reading yikes I'm reading this straight guys,
but it's saying that the director who previously
had the direct -to -video sequel Jarhead 2 field
of fire I didn't know that existed first of all,
but will helm the remake from a script by the
person who wrote American Pie 2 and Apparently
this may be a jumping -off point for a potential
kindergarten cop television series. Oh. What?
Yeah. Are they trying to be 21 Jump Street or
whatever? That is the most ridiculous thing I've
ever heard. I just think it's interesting. It's
like an Indian pancake. He's like, what? Why
would you ask? Why would you even put that in
there? A leading man type. Not exactly a leading
man, but the type that could potentially be a
leading man. Like he's not a leading man on an
actual theater release film, but he's the type
that could be if he was someone completely different.
Like Sam Worthington, you know a guy you can
just put in there and doesn't really do anything.
You can't do kindergarten cop without tortured
anger, it's just not whatever. I think it should
be Mark Strong. I would watch a movie if it was
Mark Strong being a kindergarten teacher. Do
you ever see him in the real rock and roll of
just smacking the crap out of people? Yes. I'm
still trying to get over there was a direct -to
-DVD sequel to Jarhead. Yeah, sure. We'll go
with that. That's disturbing. I guess there was
a sequel to Desert Storm? I don't know. We're
going in all kinds of terrible places here. Alright,
let's go in a completely different direction
from direct to DVD. I know we kind of already
talked about it a little bit in the box office,
but I guess I didn't know this tradition existed,
so I thought it was clever and something that
I wanted to bring up, and this is going to be
one of those... news articles that's probably
terrible to bring up on an audio podcast like
this because nobody's going to be able to see
it but i promise you if you're listening right
now go to geocastradio .com click on the episode
post and there will be pictures of the stuff
that i'm talking about but uh... we talked about
jurassic world breaking the record in becoming
the uh... the all -time leader right now as far
as the first weekend in theaters And I didn't
realize it's kind of a long -standing tradition
where certain studios will kind of send a congratulatory
film took over the top spot. So what we got is
we got a character type artwork that was done
that's basically Marvel Studios congratulating
Jurassic World on being the new opening weekend
king. And it's a picture of Chris Pratt on the
Tyrannosaurus Rex. Holding Thor's hammer and
then the the Avengers are all kind of down at
the bottom looking befuddled and confused as
to as to what's happening and it was accompanied
by a tweet from Marvel had basically congratulating
The current of our Colin Trevorrow and Christopher
Pratt, etc uh... which is it which is cool and
that's what made the headlines but i didn't realize
this has been happening for a long time so uh...
it happened back when uh... when star wars took
over jaws uh... it happened when i'm sorry i
might have said that the wrong way yeah it happened
when star wars took over jaws it happened when
titanic took over star wars uh... i think when
et beat star wars 2 and star wars took it back
Right, yeah. So I mean the original one here
that I'm looking at, I don't know if this is
the first time it happened, but is a picture
of R2 kind of like on a beach with a fishing
pole and he's caught Jaws by the tooth. And it
says, Dear George, last week Star Wars moved
ahead of Jaws in domestic film rentals. Your
hyperspace performance package really did the
trick. Congratulations to the Cantina crowd and
all the forces of your imagination that made
Star Wars so worthy of the throne. Wear it well.
Your pal Steven Spielberg. pretty cool thing
and like I said and then George Lucas passed
it forward by doing the same thing with James
Cameron and it's a picture of the the Titanic
going down with like all the Star Wars characters
jumping off of it and then Princess Leia is doing
the old Titanic pose on the front of the ship
so did you know this is something that was kind
of done from time to time Dan? Yeah, I remember
it happening when Star Wars be like we reclaimed
it from ET back in like the 90s when they had
the re -release of Star Wars. I didn't realize
they did it I thought I knew they did it for
like overall all -time gross you know like for
domestic I didn't realize they did it for weekend
gross and that was news to me. Yes, I mean, that's
definitely interesting and definitely unexpected
that we would be talking about Jurassic World
and that grouping of all -time record holders.
I don't think anyone predicted that. We made
our box office predictions early on, Dan, and
I think we both had Jurassic World in our top
15 for sure. I know I had it below Avengers,
which I'm thinking maybe that wasn't a good choice.
But at least we had it in the list, so we're
probably at least right with that. All right,
we have a few more minutes, probably time for
one or two more headlines. Amanda, what do you
got next that you'd like to bring up? Let's go
with the Gambit X -Men spinoff movie, finally
has a director, Rupert Wyatt. And he also directed
Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And looks like
Gambit's gonna be opening on October 7th, 2016
with Channing Tatum bringing up the mantle for
Gambit here. So you managed to get a Chris Hemsworth
and a Channing Tatum. I most certainly did. Dan,
what do you think of that direction choice there
with Ruber Wyatt? Yeah, I mean, I definitely
liked his rise to the plane of the apes, so I
don't know him in super particular. But I think
it's, you know, Lisa, he has something going
for him. And he took a movie that shouldn't work
with Rise of the Planet of the Apes and made
it good. So I don't think a Gambit movie would
really work, but maybe we can make it work. But
it's going to work. I've been waiting so long.
And you guys all know how I feel about Planet
of the Apes. So if it's someone that had something
to do with that, I'm probably on board. So I'm
this guy outside of that film. So I will say,
yay for that. bodes well for your Gambit film,
so I'll watch it. Yeah, I'm right, you'll watch
it. Alright, Dan, last news story goes to you.
What would you like to talk about? Oh man, so
many choices. Well, we talked about the Inside
Out coming out next week, so it seems fitting
to maybe finish it with the good dinosaur voice
cast being revealed. Yeah, so that's the other
animated film. That'll be the test there. That'll
just be the... the test on if all you need to
do to be successful is put dinosaurs in your
film or if there's a difference between the Jurassic
World fans and the animated version of dinosaur
fans. And if that's the case, then expect the
next Land Before Time addition to be an actual
theatrical release and they'll stop with their
direct DVDs. Were they on 43 now? I lost track
at like 17, I think. And I stopped watching them
after two, so. But yeah, the cast for The Good
Dinosaur, some interesting people there. I'll
just read down the names of people so far. We
got Raymond Ochoa, who I don't know much about,
but he's from NBC's The Night Shift and TNT's
Rizzoli and Iles. I like that show. Jeffrey Wright.
from the Hunger Games and Boardwalk Empire. We
got Steve Zahn, which I don't need to explain
anything about him. AJ Buckley from TNT's Murder
in the First and FX's Justified. Anna Paquin,
here's my favorite one so far, Sam Elliott. The
voice of a tough T -Rex named Butch. Now, come
on, that doesn't fit him any better than... Francis
McDormand, you have Marcus... I don't know if
you say it Scribner or Scribner, from ABC's Blackish,
and Jack Bright from Monsters University. So
those are the names being thrown out there. So
it's an interesting route that they're going
with this one because it's not necessarily your
A -list Hollywood stars where it doesn't seem
like they're just trying to put Chris Rock or
Bruce Willis or somebody that just has that instant
name recognition, but they also didn't go necessarily
with the straight voice actor route. So it's
kind of like an interesting mixture there. But
what do you think of the voice cast there? Dan?
It seems pretty strong. Definitely a lot of good
actors that... I feel, you know, have voice talent
or have done work. I mean, Sam Elliott for sure.
I mean, looking forward to seeing what he has
to offer. And I do believe, like, I think they
had a cast and they recap, like they changed
it or something. I forget. Yeah, because originally
Bill Hader and Neil Patrick Harris, Judy Greer
and John Lithgow were all named on the cast and
they're nowhere on this press release. So apparently
they decided to recast it at some point. Interesting
cuz I know that like the good dinosaur itself
has been having production or had a lot of production
Changes and whatnot. So I don't know if that's
because of that, but I think it looks good I
you think Pixar is usually even when their movies
haven't been fast at fantastic once their voice
casting has always been pretty strong What about
you Amanda? What do you think about that voice
cast or just the prospect of the animated dinosaur
film now? Um, I think it's cute Has it been done
before? Yeah, I don't know too much about the
story or what's going on with the specific movie
itself, but I like the sound of the voice cast
and I'd definitely be interested in seeing it.
Alright, so that's it for the news this week.
There were some articles we didn't get to, so
if you're interested in hearing more about the
articles we didn't get to involving, I can't
believe we didn't talk about it, but a Star Wars
casting. We talked about a new Halloween film.
There is an article about what's coming up next
for Matthew Vaughn involving possible kick -ass
or hit -girl films. Problem for a reboot for
The Crow. Information on the sequel to Equalizer,
because that needed to happen. A new young adult
novel being adapted into a movie, a comic book
being adapted to a movie that you might be interested
in, and Dan, I can't believe I didn't bring it
up, but the information about a sequel to Maleficent.
There you go. So you can read all about all of
those things on the website. There will be links
there. But now it's time for us to move on to
our next section, which is trailer talk. There
was a slew of trailers that came out. Too many
for me to list off. There's probably about 20
trailers that have come off. Obviously, we had
a special episode last week when we were talking
about the top 10 animated films. So this is covering
the last two weeks, basically, of trailers. So
I'm not going to read them all, but they're all
going to be on the website. Dan, was there one
or two out there that you would either caught
your eye in either a positive or negative way
that you wanted? to bring up? Well the one that
kind of caught my eye was one I ended up seeing
when I went to see Mad Max, which I've seen since
the last time we met, and that was the trailer
for The Walk with Jordan Gordon -Levitt. No,
there wasn't much there. He didn't talk much,
but I didn't realize that movie was gonna be
in 3D, and getting just a glimpse of it within
3D, I think that could be interesting. I'd be
curious in seeing it. I worry about... Jordan
Gordon -Levitt in that part because I don't know
if he could pull off that accent that's needed
for the character but I'm intrigued by just seeing
what it's gonna be like and if they can kind
of make it into a film because I love the documentary
I just don't know if it's gonna translate well
to live action. You know this is one of those
ones that I did have some questions on for that
exact same reason that you just brought up and
I thought that some of those questions actually
were put to rest a little bit. Possibly by that
trailer because at first I was like, how are
they gonna do this? This seems like something
that's much more like you said Made for something
like a documentary and and how are they gonna
turn in this turn this into like a movie type
thing? Where it's gonna be able to keep an audience's
interest in more of that fashion, but the trailer
it seems like it's it's adding a lot to You know
everything that's going into this the the problems
that he's coming across and kind of just the
whole The whole journey as far as him trying
to accomplish what he has set out to so I'm gonna
I'm more on board now that I've seen the trailer
I was on board already, but I was a little skeptical
and I'm a little less skeptical skeptical after
the trailer I would be interested though with
your 3d comment to see are they gonna be able
to pull it off where you actually feel in the
theater like you're on that rope with him or
where you're you know having a sense of butterflies
in your stomach from the height and stuff like
that. The little glimpse that I did get I think
it was I mean you know it wasn't completely there
but it definitely evoked a little bit of Virgo
essentially for me because I hate heights so
it was unexpected too because I'm like wait what's
happening? I think it's definitely something
that's got a lot of interesting things going
and we'll have to see if they can somehow put
it all together. Amanda what about you? I'm gonna
see but with you as far as the walk goes I was
a little skeptical at first and Then I saw the
second trailer for Jurassic World. I think it
was in Jurassic World Yeah, you get to hear him
talk a little bit more. I think I'm just distracted
by his Funky hair and his accent is I don't know
how it would be for an entire movie I was still
trying to feel it out, but gotcha any other trailers
that you wanted to bring out? I think that I'm
super duper excited for Mission Impossible Rogue
Nation. Super duper? Super duper. That's another
level of excitement. Yeah, excited. So I'm gearing
up for that. And I think Southpaw, I think that's
given me the feels already as well. All right.
I got to bring up two for myself, and then I'll
give Dan another chance if he has another one.
the two that really actually caught my eye the
most was be one I didn't even know existed and
and one It was one that I wanted to put on my
most anticipated films of the year list when
we did that Dan but I just knew so little about
it that I just wasn't sure if I could put it
on there and I don't know if I'm gonna say it
right, but it's rock the the Casbah. I don't
know. I don't know if that's how you say that
last word Okay, Rock the Casbah No, I've never
I'm a sheltered person. I probably have and I
just don't know that that's the title of the
song but that's starring Bill Murray and I'm
a sucker for all Bill Murray fans but or films
But this literally seems like the type of film
where they just literally they just let Bill
Murray be Bill Murray It just seems like they're
just like, here's the basic premise, go do what
you want to do. And if that's the case, I am
all in 100%. So I was intrigued by that trailer
and it definitely has me interested to see a
little bit more. And the one that I didn't know
existed was apparently one that was actually
released in a festival last year, but has not
been seen by anybody else basically outside of
that until this year. And that was the Boulevard.
starring Robin Williams. This is basically, I
believe, will be the last film that I actually
released with him in it. There was probably about
four films that he was working on right before
he died and I think all the other ones have basically
been released or have been straight to video
or whatever, but The Boulevard I didn't know
anything about and this one looks actually pretty
interesting and pretty intriguing. Now, of course,
With all trailers you get the standard quotes
being thrown out there like, this is the greatest
film ever, or this is a film that comes around
once in a hundred years, or whatever they like
to put out there. But they were saying that this
is supposed to be one of, according to the trailer,
this is one of his best films, or one of his
best performances. I'll have to see it first,
but I don't know if it qualifies for anything
since it was released in... festivals in 2014,
but this is the type of film that if they were
actually right on that would seem like it'd be
one of those that they try to pile awards on
and stuff like that, but I don't think it qualifies
for that type of thing. I think it would if it
was only released in the festival of 2014. Okay.
So maybe it would, but I don't know if either
of you guys got a chance to see that one. I mean,
it doesn't give a lot away, but it seemed like
it was a pretty dramatic film and a pretty dramatic
performance by Robin Williams. Maybe I'm just
a sucker to want to see him one more time, so
that one caught my eye. I did not see it now.
I missed that one. Okay. Anything else, Dan?
We got time for one more trailer if you want
to bring one up. Ah, geez, there's actually so
many to choose from. Not The Martian because
I don't want to get any hype for Ridley Scott
movie ever again until I see it The only one
that actually kind of surprised me that I thought
was Like like it might be okay. It was vacation
Okay, I'm a fan. I like them in the Daily Show
in the office and it does seem like that that
the vacation that's coming out is you know, I
had some funny moments of like funnier than I
expected, so maybe that would be somewhat of
a good example of how to do a remake, but I think
Enhelm still fits that role well, and I like
how it certainly is self -deprecating in referencing
the first vacation, but we'll see. We'll see
how it goes. Yeah, I'm on board with that one
as well. I think that one seems like they're
doing they're going about things the right way
Maybe they will prove us wrong, but up to this
point it seems like like you said they're doing
everything right to both You know pay homage
to the original and kind of be in that same vein,
but updating it with the right people and From
what I saw it seems like something that I would
be on board for us So I'm excited about that
one more so after the trailer than I was beforehand
as well Alright, so that does it for trailer
talk, but there's a lot more trailers listed
on the website, so if you want to watch some
of those and comment on those, there's a bunch
of other ones there that we would definitely
be interested to hear your excitement level for,
whether it be in a positive or negative manner.
We're going to take a quick break, and when we
come back, we're going to get into a main discussion,
which is something that doesn't always happen,
but all three of us were able to actually make
it to the theater, so we are going to have our
main review of Jurassic World coming up. After
the break. And, as the title says, each week
we get lost in conversation about a wide range
of topics, including movies, comics, games, art,
TV, and even occasionally sports. We play games
and discuss pivotal topics like who would win
in a fight, the Kool -Aid Man or Tony the Tiger,
and examine the hot button issues of the world
of Geekdom. We keep things fresh by taking timeless
topics in new directions. We are simply three
friends having a fun time talking about life's
most fascinating foibles. Stay connected with
us every Tuesday on iTunes or at GeekCastRadio
.com Hey guys it's Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy
Mandy and we just wanted to let you guys know
about another podcast out there that we both
think you would all enjoy. It's one of both of
our favorite shows to listen to and it's none
other than the True Bromance podcast. True Bromance
is a movie podcast hosted by longtime friends
Hiro and Barry and if you like to smile, laugh,
and just be genuinely entertained while listening
to movie talk then this is definitely the right
show for you. Each week, the guys break down
a recently released movie, and not only do they
tie in the movie that week to the beers that
they are drinking during the show, but they also
tie it into a real fun top and bottom five list
associated with that movie. It's a blast hearing
both sides of these lists, and it definitely
makes them unique amongst all other movie review
podcasts. So we definitely want to recommend
all of you guys to go check out their show. Just
search out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes,
Stitcher, and all other podcast platforms. And
if you listen via iTunes, do us a favor and leave
them a five -star review. And don't forget to
let them know that the Cinema Geeks sent you.
Now back to the show. Do you see how your patience
paid off? Alright, thanks for sticking with us
through that break, and as we said, we are bringing
you the main attraction this week, which is a
new theater release, and that would be the record
holder now, Jurassic. world so before we get
to that uh... and your actual thoughts about
the films for all three of you guys let's at
least let people know where you stand uh... heading
up to that in the franchise overall so uh...
dan what was your uh... what was your take i
i mean i personally already know but for the
listeners uh... how did you feel about the original
three drastic part well the the original traffic
park is holds a special place in my heart, for
sure. It's one of the movies that made me fall
in love with movies, as they say. So it's still
one of my all -time favorite films. So it's one
that I go back to at least once each year, and
I quite enjoy it. And the other films, I don't
hate Lost World. I feel like a lot of people
hate it, and I think it has a lot of good parts
to it. And there are some really... Questionable
things at times like why you would use gymnastics
to fight Raptors I'm still not sure but then
there's like a scene or two that I think are
brilliant So it's kind of a yin -yang there and
the third one is kind of like a okay B movie
it has has some moments that I I think I've enjoyed
it more and rewatching but still kind of a Not
nearly up to the level of the first one, but
I think really it's unquestionably. You know,
there's trash at park and everything else is
quite a step down from that. Yeah, I think I
would pretty much agree with you. We actually
rewatched the three in preparation for Jurassic
World. I wasn't able to catch a rewatch of the
third one, Amanda did, but I did catch rewatches
of the first two. And yeah, obviously like everybody
on the planet, I think the first one is the best
out of those. It's just something about those
initial scenes where you're seeing... the park
for the first time, you're seeing the dinosaurs
for the first time, and the John Williams score
comes on, and it's just, especially if you see
it at the right age, it was just something that
was completely awe -inspiring, and still to this
day, the animatronics and the effects that they
used in this film for the dinosaurs are absolutely
insane. Like, you wouldn't have thought that
that was possible in 1994, is that? want to get
in the year right? Yep, 1994, the same year that
Schindler's List came out. Spielberg made that
and Schindler's List in the same year, so there
you go. Yeah, that's crazy, like we're talking
about where directors sometimes take years off
doing both of those somehow simultaneously. But
yeah, in 1994, even though it was, you know...
so uh... were much advanced uh... maybe some
stuff you know earlier on like we got in the
eighties or even in the seventies or star wars
or whatever but just to be able to make those
dinosaurs look as realistic as they did even
when you think about the the scene with the uh...
the triceratops up close and everything like
that uh... was just absolutely ridiculous to
me and that they were able to do and even rewatching
it now a couple decades later, it still looks
believable and it's still, you know, it's not
like some of those that you thought the effects
were really good at the time and then you watch
it like 10 years later and you're discovering,
well... It was good at the time, but now that
I've seen what they can do now, it doesn't look
as good. That's not the case with Jurassic Park.
It still looks, to me, just as good. I really
like the first one. I'm not going to get into
too many details. There will be a couple comparisons
that we might get to when we get into Jurassic
World. But Amanda, what did you think of the
first three? What was your breakdown of those
films? Please stop looking at my notes. Stop
it. I'm right there with everybody else on the
entire planet. I think the first one is definitely
my favorite. That scare wow factor definitely
can't be beat. Just touched on I think the effects
really do hold up over the time period that has
spanned out and I don't think that In that sense
it can be beat by many movies of that time period
and even till now in Jurassic World I think was
comparable, but it's not Those raptors were not
as scary as the raptors in the first Jurassic
Park. I don't care what anybody says Maybe because
I was a little yeah, I know it's freaky, but
I just think they looked really really awesome
For the lost world I think it was shaky at best.
I think it had a really cool premise though.
I think the whole idea of having this other island
that they kind of nurtured the dinosaurs there
first and then brought them to the park. I think
that was a really cool idea. Just wasn't executed
very well with the T -Rex and San Francisco at
the end, but as far as Jurassic Park 3, my notes
to say William H. Macy. bro like come on dude
you wrecked it for me and that and i'm not normally
hating on William H Macy um but in this i just
i just couldn't get get uh over his part it was
just it was too silly for me okay so we all like
the original Jurassic Park film and maybe parts
of at least the other ones maybe not as well
as the original one but parts here and there
of the other ones um But that doesn't necessarily
speak to what your excitement level or anticipation
level was going into Jurassic World. So since
you're just talking, Amanda, we'll start with
you. But getting into going to watch this one,
what were you thinking? Where were you thinking
it was going to hold up? How excited were you?
What was your anticipation level? I think this
is one of my most anticipated films of this year.
And it definitely didn't disappoint me. But as
far as my love for the first three, or I should
maybe just say the first one or two. I was definitely
wicked stoked for this to come out and see what
they would do with it. Dan, what about you? What
was your anticipation level? I know probably
pretty high based on the first one, or were you
just kind of hoping that it wasn't bad, not necessarily
bad, but the second or third one? It varied,
honestly, depending on how close we were. Uh,
you know for the they were talking about doing
Jurassic Park, you know for what do you ever
have you for years? And it was like one of those
things that was never going to happen And then
you know it it ends up coming out. I'm like,
I don't know about it Then the trailer started
coming out and i'm liking it more and more so
The more the closer we got to it. Honestly the
higher my anticipation grew So I I think my over
when I walked in that Into or actually drove
in because it's not the drive -in drive -in when
I drove in to the theater I was actually highly
anticipating it just because of you know I was
just ready to get back to the world the world
that I saw you know 20 years ago Yeah for sure
and I was kind of I was kind of like you said
I'm mixed I came back kind of in and out depending
on what was going on like The idea that there
was gonna be another Jurassic Park film was I
thought cool for me like that wasn't one that
I necessarily minded that there was gonna be
a remake especially you know all these years
later with the effects that were possible and
maybe to see how they could maybe ramp it up
or even impress us more or at least to the same
level that the first one did. You know, I wasn't
necessarily jumping head over heels about it,
but it was definitely one of my more anticipated
films for this year just to see how it was going
to happen and what way they would go with it
and kind of see how successful they would be.
So I was pretty excited for it, too. Before we
kind of delve into it, what were your initial
reactions as you left the theater, as the movie
was wrapping up? First reaction out of the theater.
Dan, what did you think? Honestly, my initial
reaction was I enjoyed it, but I was disappointed.
And I was trying not to do what is really...
hard not to do and to compare it to Jurassic
Park and want to get the same type of reaction
I got from that one, from this one, but I think
overall, I think there are aspects I liked, and
what I was worried about was, kind of which we
can probably get into, was the direction, but
what I think really let it down was the script
as a whole, and even though I thought, you know,
I enjoyed my experience, I think it was worth
watching, I was hoping for just a little bit
more and to live up to the the hype of the first
one, but I would say in the series, I do place
it above the second and third film. Yeah, I would
place it there too. My initial reaction, I think
I even said it to Amanda afterwards, was that
I liked it and it was a fun summer movie, but
that it had lots of, I had lots of questions
and lots of issues or problems with certain things.
So I'm kind of probably in the same boat as you
are where I was at. at least partially disappointed,
and I found myself not comparing it to the first
Jurassic Park film, but instead I was comparing
it to things like San Andreas, Godzilla, Transformers,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and saying if I'm
just looking at summer blockbusters or big -budget
popcorn flicks, where does it rank amongst those,
and is it better than those or not? That's actually
kind of interesting as I was watching it. Godzilla
was the first movie that kind of came to mind
where it had similar issues, but I feel Overall
like it was I thought it was better than Godzilla
But I thought like a lot of the same problems
kind of are related regarding characters and
the way it kind of It's human aspect. I would
say so I think that's kind of the Interesting
enough to that was a movie that was reminded
of most often watching it not trash to quark,
but Godzilla Right. All right, Amanda, what do
you think was your initial reaction? Good, bad,
or ugly? I enjoyed myself. I think I was thoroughly
entertained throughout. And I tried my best not
to compare it to the first one and not be too
hard on it and just try to enjoy myself and taking
the experience. This is definitely one that you
completely have to shut off, though. You have
to shut off your movie reviewer, critic, logical
hat. You have to take that off and turn it off
and try to just purely... go along for the ride,
I think, because as soon as you start thinking
about stuff, it just makes me mad. But before
we get into any of the issues or problems that
we had, let's start on more of a positive note.
What were the things that you liked best or the
things that you thought were the best things
as far as how they did things? Anybody that has
one can go, but what were the brighter spots
for you guys in Jurassic World? I thought, like
I mentioned, the direction. I was surprised that
it was better than I expected. 69 guaranteed
which was Tavaro's movie before this but it's
nothing compared to this and he is obviously
didn't know Spielberg but I thought overall his
action sequences were staged well for the most
part I will preface this by saying I did see
this in the drive -in so I it's I I can't really
judge the things like special effects all that
well because it's not the best location to see
it because it's kind of darker and it's hard
to see certain things but I really love things
like the the pterodactyl sequence I thought was
a standout, and I think it did enough to forge
its own legacy. We can get into some of the nods
to the old one, but I thought that was probably
maybe where it hindered itself too much, where
it was maybe too, and it got a little bit too
much when it came to remembering the first film,
but I thought overall there were enough of those
action set pieces that made me entertained and
made me enjoy. watching it and how it used the
world of Jurassic World and how it built it up
to a legitimate theme park and all the little
tiny bits and pieces to it from the petting zoo
for the dinosaurs and all the different pieces
and how it relates to the parks of today. So
that's what I did, just the idea and the concept
of where they took the franchise. You know, I
like that too. I like the idea of the theme park
and the idea of what kind of different attractions
they would come up with. Like I said, whether
it be the petting zoo or like the Sea World aspect
or the gyrospheres or all the different like
attractions they came up with and it also seems
like even though it's this fantastical world
of dinosaurs that they they did stuff that seems
like it would be how they would do stuff in real
life especially with all the different like it
seemed like they had like little educational
things throughout like watching the videos of
how this happened you know the type of stuff
that you're going in and when you're in a museum
or an amusement park you're not as a kid you're
not interested in at all but but it's still thrown
in there you know whether it be it almost reminds
you of like when you're you're in Place and they're
showing you like the size of a footprint of a
bear or a lion or something like that But in
this case, it would be dinosaurs and things like
that So I do think the the attractions and the
theme park aspects were were a plus were an interesting
thing To look at so I would definitely agree
with you on that one Amanda What were some of
your highlights or some of the things you like
best about Jurassic World? I Think what I liked
best about it was Chris Pratt Justin. I think
he stole the show in all of his scenes. I think
he was the character that I related to the most
and vested in emotionally the most. And of course
he is just an all -around badass. He can ride
a motorcycle with a pack of Raptors. So that's
my... That's your highlight? That's my highlight.
I would echo a lot of that. I think Chris Pratt
was pretty good in this. And I know I've heard
a lot of people say that they thought he was
underutilized or could have done more, could
have used him even better. I don't know, I thought
I was happy with what they did with him and happy
with what he was doing. I think it was kind of
hard because in a lot of sense, and we'll kind
of get to this later when I get into the negatives,
but for a lot of sense he was trying to replace
two different characters from... or represent
two different characters that existed in the
first film in a way. So I thought that was kind
of hard, big shoes to fill, but I was pleased
with Chris Pratt and since you're bringing up
performances, this is where I'm going to get
maybe the most hate from listeners because apparently
I disagree with a lot of other people that are
talking about Jurassic World out there. And that
is when it comes to the child actors. And I've
heard way too many times this week people praising
the child actors in the original Jurassic Park.
And... I love Jurassic Park, the original film,
from 1994. But the child actors, especially the
girl, the girl was absolutely awful in Jurassic
Park, in my opinion. And maybe I am alone in
that opinion, but I thought she was absolutely
the worst part of Jurassic Park. The boy was
not as bad. I thought the boy was more believable
and didn't have some kind of cringe -worthy moments,
but... The girl from the first film I thought
was cringeworthy almost all the time. She overacted
the crap out of things. The looks on her face
and the way that she did things were ways that
most people don't act and don't show on their
faces. Now, that's not just me hating the fact
that she was retarded with the flashlight and
wouldn't shut it off. I'm not just mad at that.
But I just thought I did not care for her as
an actress in the first film. I very much strongly
preferred the child actors in Jurassic World.
I don't know about you guys, but I would take
the two kids in Jurassic World over the two kids
in Jurassic Park. No, I would have to go the
opposite, honestly. I thought the younger kid
in Jurassic World was pretty good, but I thought
the teenage guy was just... I don't know if bad
acting is what I would go with. I think he had
some bad writing. Yeah, and I just thought his
character as a whole was really uninteresting
and just... rather just like a mean and i get
that was what they're going for but i just i
didn't really have any they care for him at all
and and so that i'm just talking strictly from
an acting standpoint not not for the writing
of the actual character i i thought i found that
the kids and uh... i don't know in joshua park
a little bit more interesting thing it ties in
line with more of what that movie's doing i've
never had an issue with their acting is it is
it big yeah i guess i don't know that they'd
always be felt like Kid acting like kids, you
know, especially the young boy. He was just fascinated
with dinosaurs and it was kind of annoying but
I mean certainly they were like him Subtle but
I they weren't in a subtle situation. So I guess
that's the way I took it I guess I don't know
how I would act if I saw dinosaurs and I felt
no it wasn't it was just more so like the way
like I just thought the girl over acted on a
lot of stuff not not that she was acting too
big for the situation but that she was just The
facial expressions and the way she moved just
didn't seem natural to me even in that situation
I don't know maybe I watched it first as an adult,
but I guess as watching it as a kid it just seems
like the right thing to do but I thought the
kids in this, the younger kid I thought was interesting,
but I thought those kids together did not have
much chemistry or did not really feel like brothers
to me. They just were kind of dull. Like I said,
I think that's more of an issue of the writing
than it has to do with what they were given than
their actual acting ability. What do you think,
Amanda? I can't really give a crap less about
these kids in dress world. I mean all of a sudden
they're like, oh we're 15 and we have worked
on one car with our grandpa in our entire life
and now we can get this 20 year old Jeep running.
That was a little bit bad. That was pretty bad.
Things like that. I really did not buy into their
story at all. I like the kids in the first dressing
park. I don't think that... They were the highlight
of the movie for me, but probably because I was
the same age and you know I really didn't care
I just wanted to to see somebody get bit in half
by t -rex, but Watching it as an adult I think
that some of the scariest scenes were when the
kids were in danger in the car with the T -Rex
and I think that was a really great scene as
well as the kitchen scene. So some of, you know,
my favorite scenes involved the kids so I give
them props for that. Okay. Fair enough. I will
be in the lonely island about not liking her.
I like the boy. I like both of the little boys
in both films better than the older siblings.
But did we miss anything good or did we only
each have one thing? Well, the other good thing
I thought, which was almost a negative for me,
but after I thought about it, I think it actually
kind of makes sense. And it's, you know, the
first drastic part very much is in like, you
know, you have the childlike wonderment and how
that gets transformed to like, you know, just.
Complete destruction and terror and in this at
first it's like well, I feel like it's trying
to go for that wonderment But it feels very artificial
but then I think almost I think that's a purposeful
choice because you look at there's a specific
scene that comes to mind where There they get
their hotel and they open need a classic John
Williams, you know score from the original film
starts to Crescendo and it opens up and then
you know what we were you got like the dinosaurs
last time we get this amusement park it just
feels It's like seeing dinosaurs compared to
seeing Disneyland, but I feel it makes sense
because you do see the effect of what would happen
if this was actually made into a theme park.
You wouldn't have that same effect. It would
be a little bit more touristy and artificial,
and it wouldn't have the same type of reaction
you would get when you see them in their natural
habitat, which I thought was interesting. You
mentioned Chris Patton. I did enjoy him. I don't
want to get into spoilers, but I do think it
gets... I don't know, stronger is the right word,
but I feel like it gets more interesting as the
movie goes on, or at least more entertaining.
I can see that. I think as far as how jaded the
feeling gets... from going from that wonderment
to going to the hard truth about what really
would go on if this was commercialized like this.
And I think that it's really represented in BD
Wong's character in his arc as well. I think
that is really showcased there. I think I agree
with that. Now, some people listening to different
podcasts that have been talking about this or
different things on the internet, it seems like
there's been some polarizing reactions to BD
Wong's character. And some people either liked
it and some people absolutely hated it. So you're
saying that it worked for you and that you kind
of liked the way that it kind of showed a shift
in him over the course of these. Now if you remember,
and I think the people that are having the biggest
problem with his character in this film are forgetting
the time span that's going on in between here
and how long he's been working on a project that
had this passion to do this and that he tried
and it didn't work and he's been along for this
long time. So I can kind of see where eventually
you can have that arc where he's kind of been
Jaded to a point where where he's got the motivation
to do what he's doing in this film But I don't
know how did you guys react to his character
overall Dan? He did seem a little bit more like
you know be movie villain Than I expected, but
I guess like you I was like well. I mean you
know you have to be a little bit You have to
have a little questionable morals if you were
going to get in this business to begin with Considering
when he was doing it was really under the radar
and like questionable and you know the original
drastic park scientists did some you know Engineering
as well. So like it's not like it's the first
time he kind of did that So I could see it to
me didn't seem it was that far off and you think
of you can't like five minutes with the character
I think I think if that guy was not an actor
still and like not in Law and Order or whatever
show he's on. I don't think it would be a big
deal To me, it's it's not like you get his full
insight use we see him for five minutes in the
original film So I don't think it's right. I
don't know. I didn't have an issue with it I
didn't really either. Amanda, you didn't have
an issue obviously either since you said you
appreciated his art, correct? Yeah, I think I
really enjoyed it. Maybe it's because I've just
seen the originals pretty recently to have that
fresh in my mind to just see the bright look
on his face and the enjoyment that he got out
of his work to it being something that... now
has changed into I've got to make money off this.
I need up the wow factor. I need to deliver results
that aren't the same kind of results that I started
out trying to accomplish or reach. I think that
seeing that even just briefly, you know, and
first to what it is in this Jurassic world that
he finds himself in now, I think that it really
shows what that industry has done to him as a
person. Yeah, I would agree to that and that's
why I didn't have as a big of an issue either
So any other highlights that we didn't get a
chance to talk about yet? No, nothing really
comes to mind Okay. Well, let's flip it to the
negative side then and What were the things that
took away and I let's just start with the big
one and this is not a spoiler because It's revealed
pretty quickly I think in the movie so I don't
feel bad about and plus two hundred million dollars
worth of people have seen this already and So
I feel like this isn't as big of a spoiler, but
let's get into the military angle of this whole
plot and the idea that Vincent D 'Onofrio's character
and the military is interested in taking trained
raptors and possibly other dinosaurs in the future
and instead putting them into actual military
atmospheres to fight wars instead of people.
I'd buy it. No, I'm joking. Yeah, it's interesting
because I mentioned that this movie's been in
development forever And I don't know if you ever
saw some of like the concept art that they've
made over the years They were like at one time
these dino soldiers that were genetically modified
like it they were odd looking and I feel like
this this movie does seem like it's a script
that's been around and passed around and adjusted
here and there and that has these parts that
doesn't necessarily all tie together all that
well or feel all that well -developed and I think
the best example is this military portion of
it just because they're just like hanging out
there and then they're like okay we're gonna
this is gonna happen now just like okay but uh
it I don't I don't know it seems questionable
though I mean we do use dolphins and other sea
animals as military tools so maybe it's not hey
don't underestimate a dolphin I mean Flipper
can attack Jaws all he wants but I don't think
he's gonna come and bite my toes off if I don't
give him enough fish. Orcas are pretty badass
they might they might take out There you go.
I think maybe somebody watched one too many 80s
cartoons and was seeing dino writers and dino
saucers and stuff like that. But the biggest
thing for me, and Mayda has no idea what I'm
talking about, nor does anybody younger than
the age of 28. So I apologize for dating myself
with those. But I think the biggest issue there
is we're talking about the U .S. military. And
they're one of the most structured, organized,
like... regimented, regulated type of organization
that you can come across, and even if it was
something believable, even if you were trying
to go with something, I don't know, there would
be no way that they would ever trust something
as wild as a dinosaur to do anything. for them
but it just seems like the logistics of even
getting it to where you need to get it to would
be like you know you have to feed the dinosaur
you have to i guess parachute it in to where
i don't even i mean they'll like you know we
had uh we had cars on parachutes i think the
only way you top it with dinosaurs on parachutes
yeah that would be the next drastic park dino
drop You just need Chris Pratt on a four -wheeler,
and you're good to go. You can get him anywhere.
He was on a motorcycle. He was not on a four
-wheeler. We're going somewhere in a little bit
more different terrain. It was also unbelievable
that he was trucking around on his Harley compatible
or whatever. I don't know. I just think the military
angle of this story is quite possibly one of
the dumbest. Plot angles I've seen in a movie
in a long time. Yeah, this is right up there
with turtles from last year Yeah, I mean it doesn't
make sense, but I My bigger issue. I mean that
doesn't it does it does seem kind of odd that
there'd be like the military at a theme park,
but whatever And I think it kind of ties in line
like I said with the script as a whole because
I feel like a lot of the characters were We're
lacking. I mean, that's one of the things I love
about Jurassic Park. It was the characters or
you know, you know, you Goldblum's character
they're they're all kind of colorful and they
all work well together and interesting in their
own right but with this like we mentioned Godzilla
similar thing where you know like Bryce Ellis
Howard I was not all that into her character
and her performance and the kids were okay but
not all that you know not nearly as interesting
as the other film sorry Well, I agree with you
a hundred percent on that like that was to me
also one of the biggest draws of the personal
besides seeing the effects and the dinosaurs
and how realistic they look but like you said
you had Malcolm you had grant you had even like
people like What was it? The main hunter guy
that gets killed by three Raptors. I can't remember
his name Muldoon You had Muldoon even the people
you didn't like like Janaro the lawyer and Nedry
I mean the facts that I know these names outside
I mean obviously I've seen the film a bunch of
times But all those characters stuck with you
we Hammond it, you know, etc Hold on to your
butt Yeah, you even have Samuel L. Jackson as
a minor character. Come on, but this one yeah
is like Chris Pratt and Jake Johnson's character
and outside of that Maybe the one guy was notable
for a minute. Yeah, but I think Bryce Dallas
Howard's performance was super lackluster And
definitely not believable at all. Yeah I've heard
it from a couple different people but it makes
sense like so You're gonna take a job like in
charge of a theme park dealing with these live
dinosaurs, yet you absolutely have no feelings
or care about dinosaurs? Like, that just seems
weird. And bitch, I don't care who you are or
what kind of shape you're in. If you're running
from a T -Rex with a flare in your hand, you
are kicking off your heels and you are dipping
like an Indian through the woods barefoot. Just
saying. I don't know what just happened. But
yeah, you would definitely be not wearing the
heels anymore. Especially not those old lady
ass pumps. Come on now, get some red bottoms.
You are like some kind of big head of a conglomerate
or whatever you want to call it. You can afford
some Louis Vuitton's girl. Get out of those nasty
grandma pumps and get you some help. I can't,
I don't speak that language. I don't know what
language you just spoke. But getting back to
the characters, one last thing I wanted to say
about them. It wasn't just that we were missing
the memorable characters, but because of that,
it seemed like what I was saying before, like
Chris Pratt had to try to be like three different
characters in one. Because he's literally taking
Grant's role from the first one, as well as Jeff
Goldblum's role, as well as Muldoon the Hunter's
role, almost. And it's like, how can he be all
three of those people? And because he was trying
to be all three of them, I feel like we really
lose the sense of what was represented by Jeff
Goldblum in the first one, and I think the lack
of that hurt this film a little bit. And I think,
too, the issue that came up, and it's hard not
to compare the movie, because it almost wants
to be compared to it, because there's so much,
you know, the homaging and referencing to the
original, there's everything from, like, you
know, a small cameo from Mr. DNA, to, like, legitimate
shots taken from it, to, like, you know, other
aspects where it's obviously someone wearing
the shirt from Jurassic Park, you know, so it...
it almost kind of get out of its own way in that
way where I think it was a mistake to push it
that hard because all it made me think of was
like I'd rather watch Jurassic Park which is
you know it's that that was you know it's I think
it's okay to do it in one angle but just continually
to push it over and over again I thought was
a little bit much but I did think there were
some interesting references to other movies too
including like Alien and Aliens that I thought
were a little bit more effective but And Jaws.
And of course Jaws, yeah, definitely. Amanda,
what were some of the things that you liked the
most out of this? Or I'm sorry, you disliked
the most out of this? I think the dinosaurs looked
pretty cool, I guess. But I think one of Chris
Pratt's... best lines was you know dinosaurs
wow enough in regard to the gene slicing and
i think they definitely way over did it with
the gene slicing of the endominus rex they could
have done um you know really without as much
of the weird genetic quirks that it had and I
think it still would have been, I think it would
have been more believable, still as entertaining.
And I also wanted to see a little bit more of
the attractions. I think that was one of the
best parts is being able to see the different
parts of the park and I think what I did see
I really enjoyed but maybe a little bit more
would have been nice. And I think that was one
of the biggest failures too because they had
a perfect opportunity when those two kids are
off the beaten path. And they're basically out
in the actual, you know, past that one attraction.
Like, there was, they were basically searching
for a way back to the populated part of the park,
you know, back to the hotels and the restaurants
and where all the people are. It seemed like
it would have lent itself to exploring and kind
of going through and hitting like two or three
or four different areas of the actual theme park.
And it just seemed like they didn't do that.
They went through like one and that was about
all you got to see. So I was looking for more
of the other areas besides the quick sequence
of showing all the brontosauruses and the trip
back to the original compound or whatever. They
didn't go through a whole bunch of different
areas. I mean, I guess we got to see the bird,
the aviary or whatever you want to call it from
a distance. But yeah, I didn't get to see either
enough attractions in the park or enough like
exhibits of different types of dinosaurs. Like
where were the, you know... where was the area
for this type of dinosaur or the area for that
type of dinosaur. I didn't feel like we got enough
of that to give us a grand scheme of how big
this place actually was because it literally
seemed like anytime they needed a character or
a dinosaur to be in a certain area, they were
there instantly. Like there was never travel
time or or the three places they were were literally
touching each other but when they ever they showed
that big map there was a big huge space between
things and it just didn't seem like those kids
were here and then they were immediately here
and then they were immediately there and then
Chris Pratt was immediately there and then the
t -rex was immediately there and I'm just like
is there is everything just like I don't know
it's too convenient for me. You need to like
start at like the Game of Thrones with the map
for all the different areas. I'm trying to get
a handle on that. They all die. I know that much
to expect. But along with that, I didn't get
the sense like you did in the first one that
anywhere off the beaten path was dangerous. Because
the only danger you have in this one was the
Indominus Rex and eventually when the birds got
let loose. But that was the cool part about the
first one is you knew. when Nedry was off the
beaten path, or when the guy was going out to
try to turn this on or that on. Anytime someone
was wandering out, it was like, what are they
gonna encounter, and what's gonna be the danger?
And in the first one, you have the Spitter, you
have the Raptors, you have the T -Rex, you had
a fourth type of dinosaur that killed one of
them. So I mean, you had all these different
dangers, and I didn't get that sense of danger
in this one. It seemed like these kids were out
completely past the gyrosphere limit. And the
only thing that they ran into was the Indominus
Rex. Yeah, I mean, and I think the thing too
is that It was just like the the theme to this
was the park is open but I didn't think it used
that all that much like you mean you have a pterodactyl
sequence or to think that I keep going back to
but besides that I don't think it I felt like
the Having to deal with all the people in the
park really mattered all that much it they just
kind of put in one area for the most part you
had that one sequence but i thought like you
could have done more with that idea the fact
that this park is open you may be a little bit
more chaotic and i think it goes to your point
where you only have one threat here so it limits
kind of where you know where that's coming from
so you can you don't feel that uh... impending
doom like you do with the first one because it's
like one wrong turn and you're going to get killed
by some other creature or something like that
Alright, well let's go around and in the interest
of time give everybody a chance for some final
thoughts something they didn't get to talk about
if there is some stuff and and a final grade
out of 10 for Jurassic World so Amanda anything
you didn't get to and what would be your final
thoughts? I think that I know Dan said that maybe
too much of nostalgia heard it a little bit,
but I think that I really got a kick out of Seeing
the little nods that I did But I do think that
it did go a little far Right down to there was
two kids related to somebody Working at the facility
in a high position in danger and running for
the lives in the park without that said family
member So I think there were some parallels there
that were a bit much But I think I enjoyed it
overall and I'm gonna give it I'm gonna say an
8 out of 10 Okay, pretty high I will say for
my final thought that it's something, I guess
I could have a similar problem with all four
of the Dresser Park films so far, but I don't
understand why we continuously in this franchise
have to see people that are going after dinosaurs
with stun guns and rifles and pistols or whatever
they're going after these people with. We've
seen like this is not ignoring the fact that
Jurassic Park existed and that that was a failed
experiment So if you're reopening this thing,
don't you have like I don't know some missiles
or Grenade launchers or something ready like
or even like a stationary gun pointed at certain
things So if something happens, you just quickly
blow up that exhibit on motorcycles trying to
shoot guns at these humongous creatures and it's
like at what point do we learn that this is not
going to have an effect on this huge dinosaur
like I don't know I feel like with our assets
I feel like it once once something's broken free
I feel like there would be a failsafe and just
like that thing is dead because our military
is involved and if the military is involved they
have the weapon power to do that send a drone
missile and that thing is dead another thing
this is Costa Rica why is the American government
so heavily involved here, shouldn't the military
not be there? That's a good question. Maybe it's
the U .S., they might have purchased the island
so now it's the territory or something like that.
I'm gonna fall a little bit lower on the grade.
If you're thinking that you just are going in
to have some fun, like this movie's fun, this
movie's gonna be better than probably the second
and the third one, so it's entertaining. It's
got Chris Pratt and some dinosaurs and that's
cool, and like the kids say, that guy's a badass.
I don't know, that's one of the best quotes of
the line. Your boyfriend's a badass. The Navy,
not the Navajo. Oh, that was, yeah. I don't know
there's just way too many problems for me especially
when one of the main class here is so laughable
with the military angle so I am gonna go down
to five and a half let's say six out of ten I'll
give it a six out of ten just because it is somewhat
entertaining if you can turn off your brain yeah
so yeah yeah and as I mentioned I did see this
in driving so I feel like we watching it I would
maybe enjoy it a little bit more because the
last sequence was so dark a lot of those I didn't
feel like I could feel Completely grasp everything
that was going on and so like you said I kind
of Kevin I think we're kind of in agreement.
I I enjoyed it. I just had a lot of questions
and Disappointments regarding just the script
wise which was interesting because I I was more
concerned with the director knowing he was Going
into like a big project project like this for
the first time Yeah, I mean I could see in a
wee watch it getting better because I maybe that
those issues I have won't be a huge hindrance,
and I know what I'm expecting, but right now,
like I said, I think it's worth watching, and
it does fall in line kind of with Godzilla for
me last year, which I think I like more than
you, Kevin, and so I would agree with more, like
a six, 6 .5 for me as well. Okay, so that is
how we feel on Jurassic World. Real quick though,
before we close this show out, because we're
not going to be doing what you've been watching
this week, because... We are getting an extension
on both of our homework assignments for one more
week So we won't be talking about those and besides
that we didn't we didn't see a whole bunch of
films So in lieu of that just real quickly, I
want to see if you guys can be put to the test
It's only gonna take about two minutes But I
want to see since you guys mentioned them about
four or five times all the different nods to
Jurassic Park Who can name the most? I want to
just give it to you one after the other and we
can see who runs out first So, and that'll be
how we close out the show in lieu of anything
else. So, um, anything that's a nod to the original
Jurassic Park. Amanda, you got one first. What's
your first one? I think one of the most obvious
was the night vision goggles. Okay, Dan, something
from the first one that you saw? Uh, the Jurassic
Park t -shirt. Jurassic Park t -shirt, Amanda?
Um, the Spare No Expense was also brought up
in this one again. True, it was. Dan? Oh, the
John Hammond statue? Yeah, that was pretty blatant.
Uh, Amanda? um the original banner from the first
one the kids found that okay dan uh they also
had in the the use of the original theme song
obviously the original score by john williams
original john williams score i mean i think the
original jeeps they did have the exact same jeep
that uh john hammond and janaro were in and the
original one number 29 showed up for the kids
that's when they put back together nice uh dan
uh the also um The flamethrower, similar to the
T -Rex escape from the first one. Okay, Amanda?
The flare, using the flare with the T -Rex. Okay,
Sam? The clever girl, they used that line, I
believe. Yeah, with the raptors. Amanda? When
those kids are at the educational area, they're
digging up what looks like the same raptor from
the first movie that they were digging. Oh, okay,
that grant was digging. Okay, I didn't see that
one. Dan? The Mr. DNA cameo. Mr. DNA cameo, voiced
by none other than Colin Trevorrow in this one
because Greg Berson, who did it in the first
one, is no longer living. Amanda? Like the OG
wall murals and details kids found. Dan? The
gates, similar to the first film. I think it's
the same T -Rex. It is the same T -Rex, including
scars that he suffered from the first film. So
that is good. Dan? The spitting dinosaur. I forget
the name of the actual dinosaur, but they use
the same kind of image from the first film. Oh,
yeah, yeah, that he walks through at one point.
Um, Amanda? They're running out. Like I mentioned
before, there's the two kids related to somebody
working at the park in danger, blah, blah, blah.
Dan? Uh, the Brontosaurus sequence is very similar
to that of the se - uh, with the Triceratops
of the first film. Yep. Definitely. For sure.
They're the closest up we get to them, Amanda.
I'm gonna say BD Wong. BD Wong appearing in both
of them? That's a pretty, uh, easy one there.
Dan? The use of the goat in the T -Rex. Uh...
Man, you guys are good. Amanda? I got nothing
else. Dandy, you got anything to one -up her?
Uh, when the Imperius Rex escapes, you have the
scene of him under the jeep with the teeth next
to him. Right. That's similar to the T -Rex escaping
in the first one. Alright, you also had a couple
other ones that we hadn't mentioned. Ian Malcolm's
book, God Creates Dinosaurs, is seen in the chaperone's
hands at one point, and then later on, one of
the tables or desks. They talked about Jake Johnson's
desk being messy in a similar way that they talked
about Nedry's work center being a little bit
messy in a different way. That's reaching. That's
reaching a little bit. He also drinks soda, so
you know. In the original Jurassic Park where
they're the Chilean sea bass scene where they're
all sitting at the table eating, there's a projector
in the background that's showing different potential
things that would come later and one of them
is a screen that says Jurassic Tennis. That is
actually one of the amusements at this theme
park that actually has come to fruition. They
don't really show what it consists of but there's
a sign that says Jurassic Tennis. Let's see.
Yeah. I don't even understand it. I don't know
what it would be either. Jack Horner, who was
a paleontologist brought on for all four of the
films to be kind of like the educational guy
that tells you what you're doing right and what
you're doing wrong. But he actually is a guy
with the long hair and the cowboy hat and second
one. He was the one that, he appeared in Jurassic
World at the raptor pen after they did the successful
training exercise. He high fives somebody. So
he's appearing in this one. Let's see, we had
the chaos theory that happened again in the original
one. It's with the water, with Jeff Goldblum.
In this one, it was dealing with blood falling
from one of the dinosaurs onto somebody's hand.
And the one drop went one way and the other drop
went the other way. Oh, good point. Apparently.
Yeah, I know, right? And let's see, the last
thing was not necessarily from the first one,
but the Spinosaurus skeleton from the dinosaur
that was the bad guy in the third Jurassic Park
film. The skeleton is busted through by the Indominus
Rex. It's kind of a symbolism of this one being
better than that one, I guess. I don't know.
And a Michael Crichton book on Jake Johnson's
desk as well. A little book by Michael Crichton.
Alright, so that is it for this week. Not much
to talk about besides what we already talked
about in our box office prediction that Inside
Out is coming out next week along with Manglehorn
and Polar Bear in the near release. If you are
there, a true crime novel being adapted to a
film starring Kate Beckinsale called The Face
of an Angel, a horror comedy starring Anton Yelchin
and Alexander D 'Addario burying the ex. Seems
interesting. Dope. And then as far as Blu -ray
releases, we have Survivor starring Pierce Brosnan
and Forger. Forger's starring John Travolta,
so I know people will be running out to get those
two for sure. If you don't want to get those
two last week when we didn't talk about it, Chappy,
Lazarus Effect, Run All Night, and Unfinished
Business are all out on DVD now as well. Let's
close it out. Anybody have a question for the
listeners about anything we talked about today?
Danny, you got anything? Well, you know, with
Jurassic World making a trillion dollars where
you know there's going to be a sequel, but my
question is, do people have an idea of where
they can go to for the next movie? Because I
have no idea, so I'd be curious if people have
any theories of what might be next for the franchise.
And will they try to make as many nods to the
threat to the lost world? We're gonna go to San
Diego. They're gonna There's some girls gonna
get eaten on a beach somewhere and that's how
it's gonna start Alright, so what directions
could they go for the next drastic part cuz Chris
Pratt signed up You know, they're doing more
as long as they keep making money. So alright
