Matt @FridleyCent

This is static when gear and I aren't fighting

bang babies. We like to listen to the geek cast

radio network today on episode 123 of this cinema

geeks We discuss who may be playing the villain

in the Han Solo film We look ahead to what's

in store for the DC in Marvel Cinematic universes

We continue to get more Robin Hood rumors no

matter what year or month it is and in our main

attraction We give you our thoughts on the film

Logan All that and more coming up on episode

123 with The Cinema Geeks. It is another episode

of the cinema geeks. I am one of your cinema

geeks optimus solo Join me today as you heard

in the introduction is miss hard candy Amanda

hard candy Amanda It's all been too many episodes.

I'm getting names wrong now. Let's see if I can

butcher everybody's name movie revolt Dan. How's

it going? Going well, it's going well. I didn't

butcher that one and Fridley sent good day, sir.

Hello i like it so all four of us here and as

we you guys might be confused by that cold opening

because it does sound like we're doing an episode

like we used to do back in the disay Amanda told

me to say that It's been a long time since we

did a I guess we would call a normal review episode

But that's what we're doing today So we're gonna

give you some movie news and then we're gonna

break it down With a new release because all

four of us actually were fortunate enough to

go see Logan in theaters this last week So the

question for you guys Amanda you can't answer

this because I told you off air the question

for Matt and Dan can either one of you off the

top of your head tell me the last time we reviewed

a new movie as our as like a main review on cinema

geeks was i here for that because that might

not be fair you listen well even when you're

not right i mean come on now uh was it like civil

war maybe i don't even know close i know you're

in the right genre I know it was at least Mad

Max Fury Rotor later because I wasn't a part

of that one and I was hearing it and I was like,

I can't get spoilers and I had to shut it off.

The last time we actually did a current new movie

review on Cinema Geeks was last June and as ironic

I guess or as a coincidence as it is, it was

X -Men Apocalypse. Yeah, from X -Men Apocalypse

to Logan is how we did that. So we're going to

be giving you our thoughts on that a little bit

later. But before that, let's just look and see

if there's any interesting movie news out there

and just get your guys reaction on that. Thumbs

up, a thumbs down, quick thoughts on some of

these things. And like I said in the intro, it

seems like no matter when you kind of jump in

and check on movie news, it doesn't matter what

year, what month it is, there's always something.

about Robin Hood. So the news story this last

week was that Margot Robbie was in talks to have

her very own Made Marion movie. Amanda? That's

a thing? That apparently is a thing. Now I know

a long time ago we had talked about the fact

that there was going to be like four different

competing Robin Hood films from different studios

and with different directors etc etc seems like

a lot of those plans have not come to fruition

and a lot of those ideas have been scrapped you

know we are getting some of those ideas that

are going to come out but not as many as we originally

thought but this is apparently going to be not

connected to anything else it's just going to

be a story about Maid Marian after the death

of Robin Hood Starring Margot Robbie Amanda Robin

Hood dies for you. I'm pretty sure that's what

the article Had stated would be the setup for

this film and why it's gonna be kind of more

of a made Marion film I mean I can dig it. I

think that she can you know bring some Something

to the table as a maid Marion. I think that she

can be strong But yet like have a charisma and

like a beauty about her that I think that could

be you know pulling and if they can You know

make a made Marion movie a thing like okay cool

Originally one of the studios was going to do

like in their attempts to build a universe was

going to do standalone films for each of the

individual characters So they're gonna do like

a Robin Hood film a made Marion film Okay. Yeah,

and that apparently is not gonna happen Dan with

the thought of a Robin Hood film without Robin

Hood What do you think? Yeah, that's no don't

do that We're okay. I mean, I think we're good.

So it sounds like a thumbs down from Dan Amanda

you were a little on the fence sideways sideways

from Amanda Matt, what do you think of this?

I'm gonna give a thumbs up just to be different

from everybody. Um So Like yeah, you sent out

this article and I read the the title like I

was like, oh made Marion movie Are we just doing

Avengers of Robin Hood? I like Like part of me

is like that that could be good if if it just

means that we get like some fantasy Movies, you

know, like I even at light or no magic fantasy

movies would be kind of great Just to have one

every year. I'd love that But also like it seems

like a terrible idea for Robin Hood And then

I read that oh, no Robin Hood's dead and this

is gonna be her story And it's like, I like the

idea of being like, hey, we need to have this

strong female protagonist, and this is a very

male protagonist world. Like, we got Robin Hood

and his merry men. But I don't know if this is

the way to do that. Because it's like, when does

Robin Hood die? Like, because I don't want like

a 40 -year -old. Well, maybe I do. Maybe I do

want a four -year -old female taken in the fantasy

world. I don't know. But, like, we need to see

more information before I'm willing to can this

one. And this, of course, is not to be confused

with one of the other Robin Hood projects that

is apparently going to be happening. That's Liongate's

reboot, Robin Hood Origins, which will be starring

Taryn Edgerton as Robin Hood and Jamie Foxx as

Little John, which is supposed to be coming out

next year. So at least two different Robin Hood

projects still breathing. life i guess i'm i'm

with dan on this one i'm i'm thumbs down i the

only thing i the thing i like most about robin

hood is of course robin hood so i i don't know

how this would work but it could work i guess

but i'm skeptical at best so i'm gonna go thumbs

down as well for this made -marrying movie, regardless

of if it has Margot Robbie or not. One of the

other news stories we had, I had to deal with

one of the films that came up in our most anticipated...

Films of 2017 and that was the film Okja Which

was being brought to us by the director of Snowpiercer

Bong Joon -ho Dan the article saying that now

instead of being just strictly Netflix that they

will also be a actual theatrical Release for

this film seems like an easy answer here, but

thumbs up or thumbs down Definitely thumbs up

because I think that's one thing Netflix has

struggled with when it comes to acquiring like

actual films like we saw a piece of donation

like that by all means should have gotten much

more Oscar love than it did but I think a big

reason it didn't was because Netflix wasn't good

at giving it like a theatrical push so I hope

they do that like there was and I hope they kind

of learned the kind of what the model that Amazon's

currently doing. They acquired Manchester by

the Sea, and they still treated it like a studio

film. They won Oscars a few weeks ago, so I think

if Netflix wants to step up their game a little

bit, they'll be able to follow some of that model.

It sounds like it's going to be limited, only

theatrical releases according to this article

in South Korea and United States. And it's going

to have a very limited day and date release in

the U .S. So it's something that we're going

to have to be keeping our eyes out if you're

interested in that film to make sure you don't

miss the opportunity to see it in the theater.

Amanda, are you thumbs up in the idea of this

kind of fantastical world being able to be seen

on the big screen versus just Netflix? Yeah,

I'm not sure which one I would go for though.

I mean, I really like the Netflix release where

I can see a... new original movie while sitting

at home but something like this might be really

awesome to see on the big screen too so I'm kind

of torn about which style I'd prefer but I think

it's awesome and the fact that they're widening

up and you know getting it open to maybe some

awards. Do you have a preference Matt and how

you see your movie or movie like this doesn't

matter to you whether it's on Netflix or the

theater or both? Mean if you could see a movie

in the theaters, that's the place to see it like

almost always right, but Like I you know congratulations

to Netflix for going big -time But I thought

like I thought their thing was that they were

different and it's like are you different if

you're just going more Hollywood Like maybe every

time I load up Netflix, I'd be like, what's up

Hollywood like Interesting yeah, it's interesting

to see how the different streaming services are

going in Amazon and Netflix have definitely taken

different routes so far and seem to have paid

off more in the realm of Amazon like Dan said

with the claim that they've been getting and

Netflix has kind of been flying under the radar.

So we'll have to see if this kind of dual strategy

is going to work better than some of their ones

in the past have. Moving on to a new story that

I'm... Pretty sure I know what Dan's reaction

is gonna be but maybe not You know when we talked

about animated films and when we've talked in

the past about Disney films I know Dan that Dumbo

has been something that's very high on your personal

list and I know a long time ago We did talk about

the fact that there may be a live -action Dumbo

happening That whether you feel good or bad about

that now we're getting news stories about who

may star in that Dumbo live -action movie, which

again is still gonna be directed by Tim Burton

and the newest article saying that Ava Green

is in talks to play a leading role in Tim Burton's

live -action Dumbo movie. Dan, thumbs up or thumbs

down for Ava Green or the idea of a live -action

Dumbo film in general? Well, always thumbs up

for Ava Green, so nothing against her, but is

Tim Burton still directing? I'm gonna give a

thumbs down. Also, how do you live -act, are

they, they're not gonna use real... Is it going

to be like, you know, Jungle Book? It's all mostly

CGI? So is that really live action? I don't know.

It said that it's going to blend CGI and live

action. So it looks like something similar to

what we got with Jungle Book. And I guess that

makes more sense than a live action Lion King,

which we're talking about, which is like, that's

all it. That's just a CGI movie. Yeah, I don't

know. Jungle Book ended up being a really good

movie. But Tim Burton hasn't done a really good

movie. I don't know. When was the last time he

sent a really good movie? What? The 90s maybe?

I don't know. Well, I'm thinking Rainey was okay.

Yeah, I don't know. But yeah, just don't. Just

remove Tim Burton and the Nike maybe give it

a thumbs up. Amanda, you're a bigger Tim Burton

fan, I think, still holding out even through

some of the missteps more recently. What do you

think about this Dumbo movie? Thumbs up or thumbs

down? I just don't understand why the live -action

Dumbo should be a thing in the first place. That

just seems really weird. There's so much fantastical

stuff that goes on. Also, too, if you look at

Disney's catalog, there's so many films that

seem like an easier transition to live action.

It's like, what are they going to do next? Aristocats?

And like Dan said, Lion King, where we just have

100 % CGI? I don't get it. I'm with you. It seems

like a weird choice for a film. If Ava Green's

in it, cool. But she was in Miss Peregrine's

for Home for Peculiar Children and it didn't

necessarily help that movie that much. I want

to see a live -action Toy Story. Matt, what do

you think about this Dumbo remake? I don't know.

I've never seen that movie. Oh, that's right.

Disney blind spots for you. It's one of the saddest

frickin movies you will ever see in your life.

You know what I do know about it is that Dumbo

doesn't say anything and I only know that because

we did that one movie trivia contest and that

was one of the ones that I got right to win it.

Wow, the memory is good. That means you must

not have been on that X -Men apocalypse film,

because you would have remembered that. Oh, I

probably was, because I remember saying, I don't

remember Isaac, I didn't notice it was Oscar

Isaac until it was way too late. I remember saying

that to everybody. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was

all four of us. Alright, next movie article.

Since we do have our video game series going,

why not talk about another video game film that

may be in the works? coming soon and I'm hoping

that one of you guys can enlighten me on what

this game is or what it's about. But apparently

a film based on the game Just Cause and it will

be starring Jason Momoa. Matt, any knowledge

on Just Cause? Oh, Just Cause series is so good.

You don't know at all about it? No. Oh, so like,

you know Grand Theft Auto, you're running around

stealing cars, shooting people, it's just getting

off the rails? Yep. Just cause is like imagine

if you were also spider -man because you have

this ability of this harpoon gun that you get

real early in the like I Don't know. I've only

played the second one and I've seen the third

one I haven't played the first one but the idea

is like you could shoot a harpoon into a car

and then shoot a harpoon into an airplane and

that airplane will launch off the ground and

just take that car with it and and then like

I don't know you get like a paraglider kind of

like Breath of the Wild which you could just

repel off of it when that repel jump off of anything

and glide down like it's just so zany fun third

-person action game like with that crazy harpoon

gun you can like I'm gonna grab this guy and

just drag him behind my car real quick or you

can you can also again because I said spider

-man Just like Spider -Man, you can shoot the

harpoon into a building and just zip up that

building. Like, it is one of the most fun games

you will ever play. So does Jason Momoa fit the

mold for that film? For that every game? Scorpio?

I mean, he's such a general blah protagonist,

like anyone could do it. Jason Momoa looks good

and is beefy, so like, he'll be good. Dan Will

Just Cause be the first great video game film.

Yeah, first great one. I mean, did we not just

watch low in the dark? I'm gonna go with no because

the odds are not in its favor. So I'm gonna go

with no Amanda You know, you got any knowledge

of Just Cause? Ever played it? Or you're just

down for more Jason Momoa? Yeah, I'm almost down

for some Jason Momoa. That's no question. Alright,

coming to some other casting things that may

find interest to some people here. Steve McQueen,

who a lot of people are a big fan of, especially

after films like 12 Years a Slave, is getting

some more casting news on his next film. which

is going to be called The Widows, and so far

the cast being Viola Davis, Daniel Kaluuya from

Get Out that we all just have started to hear

about and some of us have seen recently, Michelle

Rodriguez, and now Liam Neeson. Dan, what's the

anticipation level for Steve McQueen's next heist

thriller film, Widows? I'm high. It's interesting

because he's never done like a heist action type

of movie before, you know, they've always been

kind of really Like very deep in methodically

paced dramas. So I don't know that's it's certainly

departure I'm glad he's gonna you know opening

up a little bit. So that's what I'm interested

in. But yeah It's strange it I would not have

guessed that would be the his next project, but

this cast is pretty strong So I'm I'm excited

And this is going to be based on a crime miniseries

that began in the early 80s. So a crime miniseries

from Steve McQueen and the article also stated

that he's been working with Gone Girl's Julian

Flynn to adapt that crime miniseries. So it might

be interesting to see that. The plot follows

the story of women who all lose their criminal

husbands when the men die in the middle of robbing

a security van that catches fire. Um, so it'll

be interesting to see how that plays out. They

die because the van catches on fire? I guess.

I don't know. That's all I can read. Nothing

else on the movie yet. Except Liam Neeson. Amanda?

You on board? Uh, sure. Michelle Rodriguez? That's

the name that you were grabbing. She's gonna

be, um, a badass. Pretty sure. I said Viola Davis,

Liam Neeson, and you said? Michelle Rodriguez.

Okay. She's family! I wonder what type of character

she's gonna play. Oh, the zings are coming from

all different directions here. Bad news for some

people that are big fans of the Bad Boys franchise.

Apparently Bad Boys 3 has lost director Joe Carnahan,

which according to the article might be in relation

to some other... Trouble that was on the horizon

for that film. So will we ever get bad boys 3

or is it in all kinds of? Man, I'm just gonna

cut off what I'm saying because you have the

saddest look on your face right now I feel like

I just need to step in and direct a bad boys

3 So let's get this movie, but waiting for a

long time. Love the bad boys films I love the

camaraderie with Martin Lawrence and Will Smith

and I want some more of it because it's amazing

the action in it plus the comedy is just right

and I'm really sad that this is Going on a such

a bumpy ride here. It just needs to happen Yeah,

it was originally slated to come out next November,

November of 2018. Don't know if it's gonna be

able to do that, but I love the fact that the

article points out that Martin Lawrence has his

schedule seemingly clear enough to start filming

as soon as the movie is ready. Martin Lawrence

is really sad. There's nothing holding back for

Martin Lawrence being ready to do this film so

He's just waiting to get that call he's like

in his bad boy costumes Already just sitting

at his house and character already yelling at

his wife and shit. He's just ready to go What's

a bad boy costume just a wife beater to some

dirty jeans? He's got like his chain on he's

got his like police badge. He's got a gun. He's

ready He might be chilling in that pool that

he has in his backyard. Does he still have a

pool in his backyard? I thought they put it back

up. Speaking of some more casting notes or I

guess some more news about directors that have

made some pretty decent films in recent years

apparently news about what's going to be next

for Damien Chazelle from Whiplash and La La Land

fame and Universal Pictures has announced the

release date for their Neil Armstrong biopic

entitled First Man which will be directed by

Damien Chazelle and stars guess who Ryan Gosling

so that apparently will be coming out October

12th of 2018. Dan, what do you think of this

combination? I like it. I mean, I mean, biopics

are not the most exciting things in the world,

so it seems like, you know, how is he going to

bring in jazz to this? That's the question I'm

wondering. Is he going to, you know, everything

seems to have a relationship to jazz. I don't

know. Like, I'm wondering how, like, how do you

not... I mean, it seems kind of ridiculous to

say, how do you make the story about the first

person to walk in the room exciting? But I'm

curious what the story is going to be based on.

Is it going to be one of those biopics that's

just one moment in time, like a Jackie that was

regarding around the most infamous moment? Or

is it going to be his life story? I'd be more

interested in if it's not his life story, because

those tend to be kind of repetitive and a little

unnecessary. But, you know, I mean, it's good

talent. Ryan Gosling, you know, he can do no

wrong. I'm sure Neil Armstrong is, you know,

happy wherever he is now that he's being played

by, you know, Ryan Gosling. As most people would

be apparently it's gonna focus on 1961 to 1969

if the article is accurate So just you know that

time period are kind of focusing around that

mission and also of note It's apparently being

written by Academy Award winner Josh Singer from

spotlight fame so another good name attached

to it so i don't know it seems like it has everything

going for it whether it uh... is able to kind

of uh... realize that potential have to wait

and see mat are you interested in the in the

story of the first man uh... you know it's not

going to get in it is from being honest i'm sure

it's going to be really interesting and that

part period history is very interesting and then

you know like i'd like i would love to see it

but it's not going to get me there because nothing

can apparently amanda or ryan gosselin in space

get you to the theater what of course didn't

somebody just play like bulls aldrin and uh...

is it aldrin aldrich i don't know his last name

there we go and uh... neil armstrong in um...

hidden figures i didn't see it yet so i can't

speak to the hidden figures already sure so they're

getting a lot of a lot of fame right now so i

think that You love for the space program. If

anybody can do it, it's the Gaz. The Gaz? Is

that what the cool people call him? I'm a cool

person, and that's what they call him. Alright,

how about some Star Wars news, because it's usually

good when we do news to find a way to get Star

Wars in there somehow. So, a rumor about who

may be the villain in the Han Solo spinoff film,

and that name being attached to that role is

Michael K. Williams. Amanda, what do you think?

Does he make... A decent villain and does he

fit in your Han Solo universe? He just pointed

it like I can't see this dude's face right here.

He looks villain -like. Was he just in the freaking

Assassin's Creed movie? Was that that dude? I've

forgotten Assassin's Creed existed, so I can't

speak to that film. Yeah, I don't know. I mean,

he looks scary, but I couldn't tell you anything

else he's been in. So, I mean, sure. Okay, Dan,

what do you think? Does that does he fit the

universe or does he look like he could? Be someone

that would be formidable as a foe. I mean, I

think so I mean you like when you think of a

Star Wars villain You also don't know is he actually

going to be here or normal human? Is he gonna

be some sort of like human hybrid or just some

crazy alien? But I you know, I think it could

work in Me looking at Force Awakens, or Adam

Driver, doesn't really strike me as the most

physical presence, but I felt like they used

his character in a different way. At this point,

I trust what they're doing. Matt, you're the

biggest Star Wars fan amongst us. This is going

to be coming out summer of 2018, I think is what

the date is for the Han Solo film. What do you

think about Michael K. Williams being involved?

You know What is a villain to a Han Solo heist

like movie? Where he's a smuggler and a scoundrel

and a thief like is it a police officer? Is it

just a rich guy who's getting his house broken

into? Like we don't know nearly enough about

this character to really know and I don't recognize

the actor immediately because I'm bad at movies

so You know any information is good information

I'm more excited about it being summer and not

Right in the dead center of peak where I'm you

know only getting four hours of sleep a night

True, yeah, you'd be a big fan of something not

coming out in December, Star Wars related, so

that makes sense there. So we'll have to see

if it stays to that summer release date, because

other films have started like that and then turned

right back to the December money -making date

that they've had success with so far. So we'll

have to wait and see there. Nothing to really

react here to, I guess, but it may play into

some of the predictions we made on our spring

preview or for our overall yearly box office

previews, but... Apparently Beauty and the Beast

is Fandango's fastest -selling family movie ever.

So it's looking to have a huge opening weekend

already tracking ahead of both Finding Dory and

Captain America Civil War as far as pre -sales

go. So any surprise that there's that much excitement,

Dan, for Beauty and the Beast already? Well,

based upon that Alabama movie theater not showing

it, I thought it wasn't going to make any money.

So, geez. Because LeFou is gay? Yeah, well Russia's

apparently not gonna show it either. Russia isn't?

That was one rumor I read that Russia was thinking

about banning it from their theaters. I really

don't understand why - I think it's Russia because

they can't afford the electricity to show it

in a theater. Not in Trump's America. Oh, no,

this is Russia. This is Russia. Not in Trump's

Russia. But uh, Trump is gonna - Do some kick

-backing and give them some cash so they can

you know move up in the world. Oh, I see No,

well when we did our when we did our predictions

I had it at number two, so I am glad about that

And I thought it would I thought I so this is

kind of right on because I thought it had a nostalgia

element that like the other live -action movies

didn't And you know you saw how much that impacted

like Jurassic World, and I feel like Beauty and

the Beast is also similar for different people

so Absolutely I think it's gonna Be a competitor

here this year, definitely towards the top of

the box office, so hopefully everybody had it

predicted high enough. Amanda, are you feeling

good about where you had Beauty and the Beast?

Yeah, I got it at number one. Alright, so let's

switch to comic book world a little bit, but

before we get into Marvel topics, let's talk

a little DC first, because Amanda, you brought

up the question I think in one of our recent

episodes when we were talking about Justice League

and maybe some of the other films that were coming

out soon, you had asked, you know, Why is DC

not introducing us to these characters more systematically

before we have the big team -up film? an article

here that we we have for news this week that's

showing that DC plans on doing all kinds of both

flashbacks and flash forwards to just fix that

problem so you don't need to do individual films

on the origins or to establish these characters

because we're just going to give you flashbacks

to what those origins or anything important to

the storyline would be and we might also do some

flash forwards to kind of show future connections

to this all -encompassing DC cinematic world.

Are you feeling better that we'll get some of

these origins through just mini flashbacks just

popped into different movies? I think what Batman

vs Superman did was show us these little scenes

to get us geared up for these individual movies

and so now that this Justice League movie is

happening I think we're gonna get even more of

these tidbits so by the time that these individual

origin stories come out we're gonna be like,

drooling for disinformation. But I don't think

the plan is to ever really do too much of origin

stories. Did you not see the little cyborg clip?

Right, I'm saying that they're just gonna do

the origin through these clips. I don't think

we're ever gonna get the idea is that... Okay,

we don't need to get the origin story then, but

we're getting individual stories to get to know

these characters. But that's enough for you,

just the flashbacks? When we're, it could be,

yeah, because we're gonna get individual movies

then. Okay. Just because it's not their origin

story. Dan is the is the movie department of

the of DC the most incompetent people on the

planet. Ah No, actually, you know what I I don't

blame them for this idea honestly like I think

it makes sense at this point in some ways because

you know people are kind of tired of superhero

origin stories and there's only so many realms

you can go with and looking at some characters

like the flash is origin isn't that i mean he

kind of just has this experiment and he becomes

a hero and if you look at like a lot of the you

know like batman the first you know 1990 batman

didn't really did his flashback his origin and

flashbacks and i think it can be done um uh some

of them ones like a cyborg it might be a little

more challenging because he's He's a he's a brand

new and no one really knows about him, but I

don't blame them actually This is this I think

is a good move Because you know, I think that's

the one not that Marvel's getting even with something

like Doctor Strange Which I liked it does seem

like it's kind of following following that no

origin formula that can get tired So it makes

sense to think you know, like I don't I hope

we don't get another spider -man origin story

this this summer But they just you know, they

kind of gloss over that so Yeah, I'm actually

okay with that. I don't have a problem with them

not doing the actual origin stories my thought

though is is it gonna come across too artificial

that hey in order to understand this you need

this bit of information and Because we didn't

ever give it to you because we didn't have it

planned out We're now gonna do it to we're just

gonna insert these flashbacks wherever it's convenient

to to move a piece of information across to the

audiences That's what I'm worried about Man is

giving me evil eyes. Matt. What do you think

about this idea? Uh, I mean can they do a good

movie first like I don't really care about Like

like hey, they might not do this. It's like well

if they can't make a good movie. What does it

matter? What's in the movie like? Seems like

it's gonna be an origin story for some in some

ways. Yeah. Yeah it does So what about I mean

that could all be a flashback What about the

flash forwards mad any thoughts on the flash

forwards that might show? How it's all gonna

tie together eventually down the road is that

or is it just going back to it needs to be a

good movie first I mean, yeah, it's like hey

watch out for these bad movies coming in a couple

of years Promise for the DC future here no potential

if it's got the flash in it though it makes sense

to have these flash forward Scenes because there's

so much back and forth in time in this universe.

Anyways, like it makes sense It follows it follows

the mess that the DC universe can be sometimes

and that mess can be a lot of fun again I've

always preferred DC over Marvel in the comic

book world And if their movies can can can harness

that just raw crazy creative potential. It will

be great They just have to make a good movie

first. That's the hurdle they're trying to get

over. All right This might transition us a little

bit more into our main topic for today But speaking

of comic book films, obviously a thing recently

has been the discussion of our rated comic book

films we obviously had Deadpool which proved

to be pretty successful in that realm and now

Logan and The next article about a film that

may be following in the footsteps is the X -Force

movie, which is a combination of Deadpool and

cable It doesn't seem like it's a thing where

we're just trying to be rated R to do it. It's

not a gimmick necessarily because obviously it's

following Deadpool who is already in the rated

R film. So, Dan, what do you think of the possibility

that this R rating continues in some of these

other films if it fits the need, as in an X -Force

movie? I mean, I think if they're using it where

it makes sense, I hope they don't just think,

like, let's throw an R rating on something and,

you know, see how it works. Like, I don't think

we need an R -rated Superman movie, though we

have one, so there's that. Like, is it, like,

and with X -Force, there's different ways of

doing it, because there's been a lot of different

interpret, like... versions of that team, you

know, with Deadpool, with Cable, with like, you

know, one moment in time, it was basically anyone

who has a knife weapon is on the team. So I think

it makes sense if it's going to kind of be like

a hybrid of the Logan and Deadpool where it's

comedic, but still kind of a little bit more.

Gritty, I guess. So I think it makes sense for

that end. I don't think the next X -Men Supernova

movie needs to be rated R, but the X -Force,

for a period of time in the comics, was the team

that did the dirty missions, the ones that would

kind of... killing and if it kind of does that

same idea, I think it would make sense to keep

that R rating. And the article does state that

this is Kinberg talking that not every upcoming

X -Men film should or will have an R rating,

but there are some where R rating seems like

a prerequisite to tell the right story. Matt,

does X -Force fit that bill as far as a story

that kind of needs that R rating to be told correctly?

I don't know if it needs the R rating, but it'll

make use of it a lot more than other X movies

would. Like, you don't want your X factor or

your X statics to be R rated. Those should be

more light -hearted. Or at least deal with certain

southern material without, like, being just violent

action fests like Logan and Deadpool. But...

Yeah, I mean, X -Force can really make use of

that. Especially if you have a Cable, a Deadpool,

a Shatterstar, or a Wolverine in there like X

-Force has had in the past. So go for it. Amanda,

you were kind of not as high on Deadpool as a

lot of people were. What do you think of Deadpool

in this type of film where he's paired up with

someone like Cable? Does that make you more interested

in that character and in the franchise? What

I didn't like about Deadpool was the way that

they... really bumped up their use of the R rating

was just a bunch of sex and strip club scenes.

That's not what I need out of a comic book movie.

You know what I mean? That's not what I need.

If I wanna watch another rated R movie and there's

a bunch of sex scenes and strip club scenes,

it's probably gonna make sense to me. And it's

not gonna be as in your face, out of place as

this was. I do love R -rated comic book stuff

with the action and the killing like we saw in

Logan. Super love that. So if they get away from

this unnecessary, like he's got to be in the

strip club every other scene, I'm totally okay

with R -rating in here. And what about Deadpool

and Cable teaming up? Interesting? For you? Yeah,

definitely. I mean I like Deadpool as a character,

so I mean I'm interested to get back into it

with him So we'll see all right, so those are

Alright, thanks for sticking with us as we said

before the break in our main attraction We're

gonna be giving you our thoughts on the film

Logan the most recent installment in the x -men

franchise and the final installment apparently

for Hugh Jackman as The Wolverine we're gonna

go around the table and give some quick thoughts

on On what you guys saw in the movie, but to

set the stage here. This film is obviously off

Gangbusters at the box office making a ton of

money and it's also doing very well as far as

the critics go. Currently holds a 92 % on Rotten

Tomatoes. Last I checked there was 235 positive

reviews based on the Rotten Tomatoes critics

versus only 21 negative reviews. So is the box

office and Rotten Tomatoes telling the truth

or not? Dan, did Logan live up to the expectations?

For me it definitely did. I wasn't, without even

the Rotten Tomatoes scores and whatnot, I really

was digging the trailers that were coming out

and even the notion of this going after something

like the Old Man Logan storyline, which it really

doesn't. This has very little to do with Old

Man Logan except that he's old and takes place

in somewhat of a future and that's really where

the similarities end. But to me, honestly, this

ended up being, I love the X -Men franchise.

You know, not all their movies are great. They've

had some really bad duds for sure, even within

the Wolverine movies themselves. But this is

to me one of the best Marvel slash comic book

movies period. For me at least, for a number

of different reasons. First and foremost, the

performances here are just insane. Hugh Jackman

has been building up to this for his entire career,

looking 17 years ago when he first became Wolverine

and what he's been able to transform that into,

and I think this has been his magnum opus, as

they say. Patrick Stewart, along with him, he's

been Professor Xavier all this time. James Mcdavore,

notwithstanding, he's been great too, but certainly

a different element and just seeing just the

depiction of him in this was shocking. Like that

to me was something I did not expect and it was...

it was heartbreaking in a lot of ways and just

in um Daphne King who's obviously for a lot of

us knew nothing about and she was a revelation

and uh I was somewhat worried about how they

were going to be able to use x -23 as a character

going into this because it's it's challenging

to have like a you know a child superhero uh

and especially one that's going to be as violent

as her but it worked on every level she's strong

performance, very much a non -vocal one, or everything

from just her facial expressions, her way to

carry the action scenes when it was her, just

some small moments. And thematically, it was

just, I think, really well handled. I felt like

this was the first time James Mangold was able

to make the movie he wanted to make, and it was

reflected in the film. Obviously, the references

to... to all the westerns are there you know

Shane for example which is used in the movie

unforgiven of course but I think also one that

comes to mind is the man who shot liberty balance

as that as it has that classic line of you know

when the legend becomes fact you print the legend

and in this world the legend did become fact

and but you see you know Logan is that James

Stewart character fighting against that legend

to show that you know what really who he really

is and who he really was. I thought it was relatively

moving, which is unexpected for a comic book

movie of this ilk. I was impressed through and

through. I can't wait to see it again. I thought

it used the R rating. It's not a flawless film.

There's certainly some issues with it, some nitpicks

to the net, but when it came just to what it

did right, I think it really nailed it out of

the park for me. High recommend for me. Amanda

what are your initial thoughts on Logan and are

you as high as Dan is on that? Yeah, definitely

most definitely I think that Dan was spot -on

when he said that they really use the our rating

to to a really great level here I think they

did it superbly. I think that the Like the r

-rated action was amazing the heads rolling the

limbs flying Patrick Stewart dropping the f -bomb

Was super cool, and I think this movie was really

really heartfelt in moving and a ton of ton of

spots in this and I think that it really had

a great balance of the humor and the action and

the intensity of all these emotions that you

get was it was a really awesome roller coaster

ride between all of this and I think that like

Dan touched on, the performances here were A+.

And especially the child actor, she did so well.

I mean, I have never seen a little kid more badass

than her ever in my life. And I think that playing...

the old man Logan that we're getting here to

Hugh Jackman did amazing like it was really hard

to see him so like sick and like beaten down

and worn out and even you know the moment when

we see one of his claws not coming out all the

way and him having to to pull it out later on

like it was like kind of an arthritic thing like

you it's so telling to his condition and I think

that he did an amazing job of showing us his

condition without having to sit and blah blah

blah about it. Like, he didn't have to talk about

any of it. Never once did he sit and just talk

about, you know, how his body was reacting. I

think he only mentioned him actually being sick,

like, one time when he had to, you know, verbalize

it to the girl. And I think that also seeing

Patrick Stewart in dealing with what he was in

this... Wait, is this spoilers or no spoilers?

I mean I think by this point most people have

seen Logan based on its numbers so I guess a

quick warning if you're not wanting because it

would almost be impossible to not unintentionally

spoil maybe at least little parts here if we're

gonna get in depth so I think there's We put

the warning out there. There may be some things

that we'll talk about during this that could

spoil things. Okay. Well, seeing him one of the

most powerful and dangerous minds dealing with

the deterioration of age was a concept I didn't

see coming and I hadn't even fathomed that concept.

So it was really interesting but also heartbreaking

to see because we've all, you know, seen the

elderly dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia

and effects of a normal mind. but seeing the

effects of aging on such a powerful and dangerous

mind was a really interesting concept. And it's

also hard seeing him as, you know, beaten down

and broken as he is, because you're so used to

seeing his level of control, and even though

he's... he is not as mobile as the others, he

still exudes power. And I think that they're

the camaraderie of the three... the trio there

with... Laura and Logan and Professor X was just

so amazing I loved the comedy between them and

also the bonds that are built and especially

the bond between Laura and Logan and I think

we'll probably get into that a little bit later

when we're talking through the movie but I think

that all the relationships in this including

the small ones that they made along the way were

really pushing the story along as well so I think

the action was was amazing and well spread out

through the film and these pieces of emotion

were also speckled just superbly throughout.

Alright, so two people very high on Logan indeed,

obviously based on those comments. Matt, where

do you stand after a couple days thinking and

after watching Logan? Are you as high on the

film as Dan and Amanda are? I mean I don't think

I could be Like I don't have a whole lot of negative

to say about the movie But at the same time I

don't think like it wowed me nearly as much It's

like yeah, it was pretty good movie like I enjoyed

it I definitely immediately went to my phone

and tweeted peter not tweeted text people that

were on the fence said you should probably see

this one in theaters like if you got a chance

to go out and get to it like I told ten people

that it's good movie I absolutely recommend it

and and the child actor that they got is like

just phenomenal like to be that good at that

age like especially with nonverbal which I think

is a lot of times harder to do like if you have

something to say you have something to do if

you don't have something to say on the screen

like you have to then make your character have

a presence and it's a lot harder and so for a

young young actress like this to be able to do

that is very impressive So just to be shorter,

yeah, I really enjoyed it. I would even say it

didn't quite live up to my expectations, because

I had high expectations, and I know that's always

a terrible idea. But it was great, and I recommend

it. So yeah. All right. So a little bit less,

but still positive and a recommend for Matt.

I think I'm pretty high on this one as well.

I think it was a welcome addition, I guess, to

superhero films and a change of pace from some

of the ones that we've been getting most recently.

So I definitely enjoyed that. I think one thing

about, and we'll get more into the characters

and the performances probably a little bit, but

one thing about Hugh Jackman is... Yeah, he's

been playing this character for a long time,

and the films have been all over the map. There's

been some really great ones, there's been some

doozies in there, and there's been some middle

of the road. But I don't think I've ever felt

that his performance was lacking in any of those

films. It's more about the execution, the plot,

the story, and some things like that. But I've

always believed him as Wolverine, and I've always

thought he was the perfect cast. Casting for

that character. So I think that's something that

really gets to shine through in this film and

show you and yet another side I mean how how

impressive is it that you know these 17 I think

it was 17 years that we're still the Hugh Jackman

still able to show us another side of This character

or at least to a different extent that we get

in this film So I think that was something that

was very impressive. I'll echo what Dan and Amanda

were saying about the performances and Matt from

all of the characters I mean I think I wish it

won't happen but like I almost wish like the

Academy would would look at something that came

out as early in the year here and of this genre

and and give it a little bit more respect than

I think it's going to get because I think there's

legitimately at least three performances here

that are deserving of some type of recognition.

I think Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, I think Patrick

Stewart as Professor X, and I definitely agree

with you guys as far as Daphne Keane as Laura.

I think she was probably the most amazing to

me because like what Matt was saying, half of

this is done, you know, at least through most

of the film non -verbally, and for her to be

able to kind of show those emotions and show

those different, just some of the looks that

she's able to pull off, it's like how do you

even know to go for that? I don't know if she

had just some phenomenal coaches, phenomenal

directing, or if some of that was just natural

from her, but it was definitely impressive on

that respect. So I think the only thing that

maybe made me just slightly less high, I guess

maybe, than Amanda and Dan are, and we'll see

as we kind of go through if that holds true or

not, I felt like... I felt that there was a lot

of opportunity for emotional resonance and for

some emotional impact based on the idea that,

you know, heading into this film, it's not a

spoiler, most people were aware that this was

going to be the last time Hugh Jackman was playing

Wolverine. It came out in articles before that

that this was going to be the last time possibly

that Patrick Stewart was playing Professor X.

So obviously that led to a lot of opportunities

for some emotional impact on how What kind of

farewell are we gonna get with them? Is one of

the characters gonna die or not? How's it all

gonna end? So there was obviously opportunities

for that, and I don't know if that somehow lessened

the impact for me at some of the scenes or not,

but I felt like... Couple of scenes really did

work for me on an emotional standpoint, and I

felt like a couple of the other ones were almost

I don't know it like deadened the impact a little

bit because I almost knew it was coming Not that

that was some type of like oh wow look at me.

I knew that was coming I think most people knew

it was coming, but I just think for some reason

it took me I Wasn't wrapped up enough in the

film for it to have the full emotional impact

that I felt like it should have Now that's only

talking about certain scenes because other scenes

definitely did have that emotional impact and

instead of talking vague forever we'll get more

into that I think later on towards the end and

we'll definitely talk about some spoilers towards

that end but let's get into a few other things

let's try to take this a little bit break it

down bit by bit here and and see what you guys

felt about a few different things but let's start

as we did in the theater with the opening and

get your guys thoughts because I've heard people

all over the the map on this one. So go back

to you Dan and what was your thoughts on the

opening segment short whatever you want to call

it that featured Deadpool. Um, I'm kind of glad

I knew it was coming before like it like I had

an idea that it was Being uh, I heard rumors

that it was going to be in the movie beforehand

because if not, I think it would be kind of like

odd Um, and I I because the way it was presented

in the theater, you know The lights come off.

It seems like the movie's about to start and

then suddenly it's this Deadpool Teeth teaser

I mean, I think it's a smarter choice to put

that up front that it was to put it at the end

Uh, you know, I think the way the movie ends

to have like like that would seem I don't know

a little bit off -putting and like ruin that

end a little bit so it is jarring when you go

from like something that's comedic like that

to this movie but I also think it's you know

it's in a way it's almost like It almost puts

you in a good spot, so it's like, okay, at least

something funny before, you know, my soul explodes.

So, you know, I guess there's some benefits to

it that way. I can tell you, for someone who

had no idea it was coming, because I must have

somehow missed all those rumors and stories or

whatever, I was completely confused as to what

the hell was going on. I did not have any clue.

I was like, this is the start of the movie. I'm

like, oh, Deadpool. And then I was just confused

for like five minutes. Amanda, what was your

take on the Deadpool opening? Did you like it,

not like it? Think it was a fun little addition

or was not needed? Yeah, I was definitely confused

as to if the movie was actually starting or not,

but I think it's definitely in line with what

we were getting from the previous runs at marketing

for the Deadpool movie. I think it was very much

in line with that. He got his little poke in

there at Logan. I didn't really think it was

that funny, though. I was just kind of like,

eh. It wasn't... I don't know. Maybe I was just,

um... Ready for Logan and then I got distracted

by this and so it was a little bit of a letdown

because it wasn't the start of Logan really But

I didn't I didn't find it funny But I think it

it it was definitely in line with marketing definitely

in line with the feel of the first Deadpool movie

So I think that it's it's just telling as to

we're gonna get the same kind of stuff as the

first one Matt. What did you think of it? well

It was interesting because it had all these little

things in the in the background and stuff like

Like it hinted at Nathan Summers, and he saw

Logan movie pisser like it took me entirely by

surprise And it was a little off -putting but

all those little things like I got to a point

where I was Staring more at the background than

the characters or anything not that there were

many characters because it was mostly just a

shaking phone booth so like I was checking out

all of the set piecing and things because you

know they're putting things in there to be to

you know to mislead you and to lead you and to

hint at things so that like I think I was off

put at first but I liked it by the end I guess

Yeah, I kind of enjoyed the I enjoyed the Deadpool

humor that we get in and then all the marketing

things that we got for going up to the first

movie and now some of this that's leading up

to the second movie so I've enjoyed that I was

just wish I wouldn't have been so thrown off

by what the heck was going on and if because

I felt like because I was so thrown off I missed

a bunch of stuff I could have seen so that was

probably my only note I mean I think it was interesting

I do agree with Dan this is much better to do

something at the beginning because I think anything

at the end of this film would have definitely

been off -putting so I think was fine I just

wish I guess I wish I would have seen the rumors

and known that it was coming so I wasn't as thrown

off getting into the specific movie when we're

introduced to this film obviously we are introduced

to Logan as an older version of the character

we have grown to know the time setting is in

the future. We're in 2029 I believe was the year

they threw out there and he's clearly somewhat

off the grid as this limo driver slash custodian

of Professor X. Dan how did that setup work for

you and how did What was the effect of seeing

Logan in this version and in this kind of rundown

state like Amanda was talking about a little

bit, you know, we have a situation where he can't

heal as much as he could before his claws, you

know, are not working as much as they did before.

And what did you think of just the general setup

of, you know, where they're at? I guess I believe

it was in Mexico and the kind of limo driver

aspect and how did that all work for you? I thought

it was a great way to open the movie because

it's set the stage for a lot of different things.

It gave you an insight into where he is in his

life. It showed you how kind of downtrodden he

became when his livelihood is dependent upon

a limo. At first, I'm like, why is he protecting

the limo? Does he owe someone money? I was kind

of confused by it. Seeing the trailers, thinking

that maybe this is a flash forward to something

that's coming. coming later and we're going to

go back but it kind of showed you just how he's

basically, you know, Sheldon himself, he starts,

you know, gets beat up by people you would assume

in other films, he would make short work of,

but finally when he goes berserker, he's able

to go through it. And also such a stage of what

the violence is gonna be like in the movie. It's

like, yeah, we're R rated and this is what it's

gonna be like. But I don't even, you know, throughout

the movie, I never thought when it came to the

violence, it was overly done or gratuitous or...

you know off -putting because I felt it fell

in line with what they were going for you know

and it was part of who Logan was as a character

and I think it informed just the regret he has

as a person so by having it as brutal as it was

I think it was important so I thought it was

a great way to start the film and I think it

set the stage for What was the comment? Mamanda,

it brings up a couple points there, Dan does.

And one of the things that we get introduced

in this setting where he's this limo driver and

kind of more off of the grid is that he's kind

of struggling with the fact that he's not, he's

not. playing the part of Wolverine on a daily

basis. He's out of that scene, he's not out trying

to do this. We also get the juxtaposition there

that, unlike some of the other films, that it

seems like this has given us a shot where, until

we learn a little bit later on, at the beginning

it seems like there's only these three... Mutants

possibly maybe the only three left on the planet.

So there's also an idea that he's not trying

to be that character He's not he's grappling

more with the idea of the stuff that has happened

in his life of all the people he has killed and

struggling with maybe not wanting to be as violent

as he once was so how did that first scene work

in respect to that and then also Going back to

some of the violence that we've mentioned a couple

times how how did the violence work for you more

specifically because if anything has been a common

thread from the detractors of this film. It has

been almost probably 90 % based on the use of

the rating as far as the R rating and the violence

and a lot of people talking about the violence

was so severe and so to the level that it was

that it almost numbed them by the end of the

film is a complaint that quite a few critics

have been given. So speak to those couple things.

I think firstly touching back on Logan as we're

seeing him You know as I said before it was really

frustrating to see him sick and not as powerful

As we're used to seeing him, but I think it made

the times where he did just full up go savage

again more satisfying because you see that he

still has that in him but it takes so much more

out of him to be that and I think that he has

really come to terms with the fact that he is

not that guy anymore really and you see him kind

of struggling with his new role as really like

a provider and a caretaker his livelihood is

not Just his own anymore. He needs to provide

for two other people and it's not easy for him

and also you see how he's dealing with it and

dealing with his past and dealing with all the

loss that he's had to in his you know his constant

drinking and I think that it's really heartbreaking

seeing him beat down but still trying to just

make it really and I think a lot of the you know

the past movies and when we first when we first

meet Wolverine I was really intrigued by his

character. He's been my favorite character throughout

and you see him just kind of like as a vagrant

Being his own man really and not caring about

tomorrow trying to forget about you know yesterday

and He was just in a state of acceptance of that

until he meets you know, Professor Xavier and

then has this even more more of a drive to look

into his past and find out things about himself

and to even move forward and make relationships

with people and form bonds where I don't think

he even wanted to in the past. So here you see

the effects of everything that he's been through

and him finding himself in the position that

he's in now. So it's really interesting to see

him this complete different role and as you said

Kevin like it's it's really cool to see him bring

a new side to a character we've seen so many

times so that was really refreshing but it was

also really really cool to see how he's still

true to himself I mean there's still His heart

is still there, but you there's always this willingness,

but unwillingness to help people Just like we

saw in the first movie with rogue like he really

didn't want to help her he begrudgingly help

her But he did and then he it's like he he's

hesitant to help somebody at first hesitant to

get involved in things but then once he's involved

he's completely involved and That's that's definitely

been true. You know throughout and it shows here,

too, and I think as far as the violence goes

I... I was still... In all every time we got

a really cool action action set piece, and I

don't think I was numbed to it all At all I think

that every time you know another limb got cut

off or you know you see some claws go up and

to somebody's jaw I was it was super cool every

time and I love that kind of thing and I also

think that Laura's Wolverine style of fighting

was super super freaking cool and also believable

when she comes like flying off of his back to

like stab people in the face I was like yeah

Yes, this is amazing. This is exactly what I

wanted. And I think her foot claw was a super

cool touch. It made her unique. She wasn't just

a little replicant of Wolverine. She was her

own kind of Wolverine. I thought that was super

cool. And I think that even when the kids had

to be involved in the violence, I don't think

it was ever overdone with them. You know Laura

definitely was off the wall, but it was perfect

and even when we get to see these other mutants

I never was like oh my god. This is too much.

I don't like these little kids doing it it always

Kind of upsets me when you have to see kids do

like savage things to you know like survive like

I have I kept like choking up like oh my god

like I don't want this kid they even have to

like You don't want a little kid to walk out

holding somebody's head by their hand. Yeah,

like, that was just crazy and badass, but even

seeing these kids having to do things to survive,

you know, their captors or get away or whatever,

like, that's really hard to see, but it was never

something that took me, that actually never took

me out of it. I was never numb to, you know,

all this violence. I think it was effective on

me, anyways, every time. Well, I think another

thing that helped was that it wasn't like it

was the kid's first instinct either. I know that's

jumping way ahead, but it was, you know, they

were more so running or more so trying to get

out of a situation and they only resorted to

their violence and powers, I guess, as a last

resort. Matt, one thing that's interesting when

it comes to this type of film is it's not like

what we got with Deadpool where, okay, here's

the first Deadpool film, it's going to be rated

R and this is what you can expect. We've seen

X -Men films for... Decades now and we've seen

Wolverine specifically like we've mentioned a

long time now than so many years that Hugh Jackman's

been playing that character and I was wondering

how it worked for you seeing the level of violence

finally being able to happen with this character

because I Understand. Yes, some people might

be numb to it, etc, etc but in my opinion it

seems like a more natural route and more like

the character would have been and It almost makes

you wish like some of those other films in the

past featuring him could have had at least a

little bit of that I think it would makes it

more jarring though that we've seen these movies

for so many years without this level of violence

and now we get it and it's like wow I'm not used

to seeing Wolverine you know what he's actually

capable of so I guess what was your thought of

the violence what was your thought of of this

version of Wolverine in comparison to what we've

gotten over the years Well, I will admit I did

not like I'm pretty sure I knew it was R rated

but for some reason like that opening the opening

piece that Dan talked about with the limousine

did not expect it to go like it did like it Honestly,

it was off -putting like it was I just kind of

need to see him delimbing everyone and killing

everyone but the same time like I don't know,

it kind of churns your stomach a little bit.

I don't need to see this level of ultraviolence.

To the point where I thought about the old ones

and it's like, I never was like, oh, they're

not really using this to keep the rating down.

They're not making them be real. I never once

questioned old Wolverine, but as soon as this

new Wolverine is rated R, it was like, whoa,

I guess you can do that. I guess it didn't excite

me nearly as much as it excited Amanda for sure.

Not to say it wasn't cool and not to say it wasn't

very well done, like it's very believable that

he is. killing these people and and it's not

glorified in any way like she thinks it's really

cool but it's not like he's held up as this like

lauded hero it's like no he's just a guy who

murders guys and the guys he murders are slightly

worse than him in some ways but he's not a superhero

and he never has set out to be and even rejects

the idea of like wearing tights and being this

heroic figure like so I guess they do a good

job narratively with that or it's like yeah he's

just a murder guy and he's not a hero even if

he does the good things and so like it is upsetting

to see for some of us. But at least it's done

in a way that is believable and tells a good

story. Dan, I wanted to give you a quick chance

to bounce off of what they've been talking about

as far as the violence goes, just to get your

reactions. As you see this Wolverine versus Wolverines

we've seen in other films, was it jarring at

all to you or did it seem natural? And what was

your take on some of the things they were talking

about? It was jarring but not necessarily in

a bad way because I felt like... when you looked

at what this frame was getting at, a lot of it

was built upon the kind of the senses of the

past of the character of Wolverine. And I think

being able to see just the pain that he goes

through as a person and that he reflects on others

is important. So. I never was desensitized to

it, and I felt like it wasn't necessarily, you

know, there's not a, like, there's what, maybe

three major action sequences in this, you know,

you have the opening, the chase sequence, the,

I guess, four, and the scene of sequence and

the sequence at the end, and I felt they were

spaced out well, and, you know, I thought when

they used violins, it was necessary, and it was

part of the story. in the I never you know, I

never said by the end of it when you when you

have a few more moments where you see that you

see like looking having to literally fight himself

or When the kids actually, you know, there's

a specific moment at the end when they you know

Kind of enact their revenge. I thought that was

still you know, it wasn't necessarily fairly

bloody, but it was just kind of a disturbing

the witness, but I think it was certainly meant

to be. So I felt like when it was shown, when

violence was depicted, it was done in a way to

be more than just a moment of action, to be a

moment of entertainment. There was something

else to it, and I think that was important to

the movie as a whole. And there was a character

moments within that, like I said, with the first

scene and you see him like diving in front of

the pool in order to protect his car or the way

that, you know, in the car chase, you have Laura

protecting Charles Xavier as they're getting

shot at to show just, you know, how she has this

instinct to protect him. And I think that says

a lot about her as a character. So within the

realm of everything going on, all the chaos,

I still think they made room for character moments,

which made with the elevated. that aspect of

the violence. And I think another thing that

helped it for me was the fact that Wolverine

himself is not, it's not like he's just doing

this for thrill or for entertainment. You can

feel like it's almost painful for him every time

he has to use his power to enact this violence

or to bring somebody down. He's not just... going

about it without thinking about it. It seems

like it's painful to him as he's doing it and

then there's also some commentary from him and

some dialogue written in there to kind of show

how all of this violence over the years has got

to him. It's not just his body breaking down

at this point, it's also the mental aspects of

all of the stuff that he's done over his lifetime

that's kind of grating on him as well. So I think

that helps make the violence more Palatable I

think from at least from my standpoint. I mean

if you wanted to say one other thing before we

moved on to another topic Or you said everything

you wanted on the violence. I don't remember.

I think I had a thought on my face. You had a

thought. I saw your eyes light up. But let's

move on to what happens then after that real

quick. Because then we get introduced obviously

to Professor Xavier and Stephen Merchant's character,

who I'm spacing on, named Caliban. And their

little hideout here as they're trying to basically

shield Professor Xavier from the world. They're

trying to save up money to buy a boat. raise

money for medication because of what Xavier's

suffering from and we're introduced to kind of

a different element of the story that we're gonna

get throughout this movie with the three of their

interactions as kind of these final mutants and

what their role is. So going back to you Dan,

what was your... take on the I guess the the

idea that the writers directors etc had to put

into professor Xavier this idea that we're gonna

take this guy who's you know his mind has been

his most powerful weapon for His entire life

and to kind of juxtapose that with the fact that

he has a mental debilitating State here or or

disease I don't know if they ever specifically

get into what exactly he has but they mentioned

a couple different things as possibilities and

kind of the the ideas that that triggers as you

see someone who is so powerful dealing with this

type of situation and the ramifications that

that has had on, you know the world that Happens

before this film as well as the film here where

he has bouts at times where he's dealing with

this issue So what was your take on kind of from

that angle with the other side of Professor X

that we're seeing as well as maybe a touch on

Caliban a little bit what you thought about Stephen

Merchant in that role? To look at what's he was

Charles Xavier. I thought honestly that that

was kind of a blank movie You know I've read

a lot of X -Men comics and taking different takes

on Xavier. I don't think I've ever seen someone

approached the character in that way when you

take the man with the most powerful mind in the

world and you make that his greatest enemy, an

enemy that he'll be able to defeat and just the

element of tragedy within that. It really spoke

to me. And of course, when you have an actor

of the caliber or Packer Stewart, you get some

really great moments and how they play with that

plot -wise, narrative -wise. You're not really

sure why exactly they're in this situation and

that's slowly revealed and you talked earlier

regarding moments like emotional beats that maybe

didn't work for you and for me there's a specific

emotional beat when there's like basically when

he finds that normalcy he's been seeking and

I thought that was just a fine piece of acting

and just so well done. There's been a lot of

moments in with the X -Men franchise that I felt

like you get those moments that you maybe don't

get in the other Marvel films, and I felt this

had a plethora of them, and that was one of them.

I like Stephen Merchant as Caliban. I had no

idea he was in this movie, and at first when

Caliban shows up, I'm like, wait, is that Stephen

Merchant? I took it back, because I've seen him

in pretty much all comedic stuff. But I like

the way they used him here. I would not have

in a million years ever put him in the realm

of the character of Caliban. And I think this

is like the third time Caliban's been in an X

-Men film. He was in Apocalypse, and they kind

of used a version of him in The Last Stand. But

that's, you know, the continuity in the X franchise

is all over the place. But I did like him a lot.

I'm like, wow, that was unexpected in the relationship

between them all. And again, it's like, you know...

I thought he did use his humor in fun ways. I

love the Nosferatu joke. That was pretty, that

was enjoyable. But yeah, so yeah, that's. I think

too what you bring up there is interesting because

what we're basically, what we basically get is

here, it's almost like this familiar or familial

setup here where we have. Caliban and Logan almost

as husband and wife or like two type of you know

caregivers carrying over the old Professor X

in a way kind of in this setup. Matt how did

the combination of the three of their interactions

either work or not work for you and maybe touch

on your thoughts on the direction they chose

to go with Xavier in this film? I thought, I

loved the moments between Caliban and Logan where,

yeah, like a husband and wife with one of their

parents degenerating, or even just two siblings

who don't know what to do about dad, who's not

the same guy that he was when he was raising

them. Like, it's heartbreaking, but it's also

very powerful and very well done. Um, cause it,

cause it has like a thing you would see in a

movie like the notebook, but also there's this

twist of, oh yeah. And when it's bad, you could

die. Um, and, and I love like, cause like, Logan's

your protagonist, right? You want Logan to do

well, and you want him to get this boat and save

Professor X and live a life, like, and finally

get this peace of mind, but at the same time

that's screwing over Caliban, right? Because

he can't go on a boat. And so it's like, I loved

them. Bouncing off against each other. I loved

that when the chips came down Caliban was still

loyal to Logan even though they always like every

time they're in the room They're bickering. They're

fighting. They're like, you know, you're not

getting the right stuff. You're not doing this,

right? Like why are we not talking and then the

second they get separated? He's like, I'm not

gonna betray my friend Like even though I got

screwed over specifically because of him. I'm

not gonna betray him in this hour Like I loved

it. Like that was so good. So well done Amanda

another thing that we got through all these interactions

was we got to see kind of what the repercussions

of Professor Xavier If he didn't get his medication

or if he did have some of these bouts that he

was going through and I think it was never more

illustrated more force than in the scene in the

casino scene where he's basically where they're

attempting to take him out and he goes into one

of these episodes where everything goes into

slow motion so to speak because it doesn't necessarily

freeze time or stop everybody you don't turn

him on unconscious but it definitely makes it

where everybody's almost almost frozen they're

just barely moving through time and obviously

we see a situation where Logan is somewhat able

to power through that in a way and at least have

some action but what did you think of the situation

that was going on with Xavier where he was having

these bouts where we see a little bit here in

the movie and then we're obviously also we get

allusions to what happened prior to the film

in a larger sense so what did you think of that

kind of situation where you have this guy who

obviously means well and has always been you

know fighting for good and he's so capable of

such monstrosities if he's not watched carefully

i guess i think that I've said a lot before on

how, you know, it felt to see somebody like that

and I think it was also really scary because

I think what was happening to these people is

what we've seen before where he's able to just

stop everybody cold but in this way he it was

like an in -between of that where things were

frozen but in the most uncomfortable way possible

because people couldn't breathe they couldn't

move they could have really been harmed whereas

before his control made it to where they wouldn't

be harmed and wouldn't even really understand

what had just happened to them. So it's crazy

to see the effects of his seizures and I think

that was another really cool aspect because it

did bump up the stakes a little bit because it's

almost like trying to keep Like if you had like

a tornado in a bottle trying to keep the cap

on that or trying to keep a baby quiet when you

know There's danger somewhere. It's it's something

that's always kind of you know at the back ear

your mind through this like what if he goes into

one of these fits and you see him not taking

his medication and you see then you also see

the ramifications of him, you know having these

fits so I think that it was a really cool aspect

that I didn't even see coming, you know, going

into this movie, and I think that as far as Caliban

goes, I liked his character, I felt a lot for

him, and I'm glad that he got to do something

redeeming in the end, because they allude to,

you know, his past and where he hasn't always

been, you know, the good guy. So I'm glad he

got to do something redeeming, and I would have

liked to see a little bit more of the, you know,

their relationship, because you kind of just,

you're thrown into it, you don't see how they're

- put together or why really, so I think that

I could have even seen a little bit more of that.

I mean that would have definitely added some

time to the movie, but I think that you, without

that, you still feel their camaraderie and in

their relationship. And from that point in the

movie, we're obviously introduced to the children

who are being experimented on or used in certain

ways. We're introduced to our bad guys or our

villains that we'll see throughout the film.

You know, speak to either one of those things,

Dan. You know, how did the way they set up the

children work or how did you feel like the villains,

whether it was a good or a bad, because obviously

a lot of times in comic book films, the easiest

target for hate is, I guess, the... of a good

villain or different things like that so how

did they work in this film for you and kind of

uh was there anything that stood out from a from

a positive or negative aspect when it came to

the kids or when it came to the villains i mean

if i was looking at like some of my detractors

that might maybe when some of this comes up and

it's difficult because obviously you want to

give kind of a backstory on laura where she's

coming from and The fact that he gets this kind

of exposition dump in a cell phone is maybe convenient,

and the fact that the character is able to somehow

bring a camera to this highly security facility

may not make logical sense, but I think visually

it makes sense, because I think it would. It

works better than say just having her talking,

you know and and just visual of having her talking

and and It may not be as effective being able

and then and then those glimpses I think it makes

there when you actually see those characters

again in the film a little bit more impactful

So it's a balance there where it's like maybe

story -wise it's a little overly convenient,

but I think it it makes it There's benefit to

it in the long run. It is a little messy. The

villains were okay. I thought Donald Pierce,

the character, who's kind of, I guess, not even

the main baddie, but the one that we see the

most. I like the performance of the actor. Part

of me felt like it was building to something

more substantial than it ended up doing. I felt

like he was going to end up doing more, and by

the end, he kind of just... takes a back seat

in a lot of ways. But I also think the movie

wasn't necessarily about the villains, and it's

like complaining about the Astor reading over

again and not having enough personality because

it's just the thing, the threat, really, really

the story there. And sometimes you don't need

super complex villains. We see this like... taking

a lot from Shane and other westerns and a lot

of westerns don't necessarily have complex villains

sometimes they're just trying to take over the

town or they want their money and I think that's

kind of the case here where you're just taking

the existential threat of trying to end the mutant

race and bringing that here it might be somewhat

of a compound and maybe would have been a better

movie if they were able to Spend more time with

those villains, but I'd rather do what it did

where it was developing the relationship with

the characters that we have with Xavier Laura

and Wolverine so it's it's tough like it like

if those are the nitpicks I'm gonna pick those

were the ones I'd go to and you know some I still

don't know how you feel about the revelation

of him fighting himself and the clone and I don't

know clones are messy like it's like when it

comes to comic books it's not you know there's

been a long history of doing them um you know

and then the fact that you have two clones in

here and I like the execution of it for the most

part like it's like a terminator type of vibe

But I don't know. I wasn't expecting it. So there's

that. I don't know. But it's probably not. It's

probably my least favorite part of the movie

overall. Matt, what do you think about anything

Dan just said as far as those characters go?

Well, I think he's right where it was better

to focus on the positive story, you know, the

protagonist rather than the antagonist. But I

would have liked a little bit more. I want I

wish they had some sort of Because there's the

implications with it when he gets like the cell

phone he gets to look through the history that

like He doesn't know if there are any of these

other kids alive like he you know He sees Laura

and that's the only one he knows is alive And

we don't know if the villains know if any of

the other ones are alive and so like towards

the end when that just happens and You get that

reveal like I almost wish like there would have

been more because it's like, well, wait, how

many kids got away and how are they tracking

any of them? Like if they could track one of

them. And it's like, why is that one hovering

down in the south? Like when the other ones are

moving, you know, like I guess I'm really curious

about the new mutants storyline and like, what

were these kids doing for all of this? And how

did they get like? And I think that they could

have without. RUINING that reveal earlier in

the movie they could have given us a little bit

more through the villain storyline of like you

know like this is the only one like that's left

or this is the only one we know or like we think

we've got them all down we just gotta get this

one just a mention on the villain side of that

so that we could still have that anticipation

on the hero side of like is she the last new

mutant I think would have really benefited this

movie. But again, it's not a ruin or by any means

like this. And this movie is not like super weak

because they don't address that. But I would

have liked that through the villains so that

we could have maintained the current hero story

and it wouldn't add too much time because we

don't need to bloat this film out. It's real

good at the pacing it has now. Amanda, any thoughts

on the villains overall? I think that With the

last kind of X -Men movie we got, it was Apocalypse.

It was completely around the villain, and I think

that this is something completely different as

a completely different feel, a completely different

vibe, and I liked that there were just these

obstacles in their way to get this girl to a

place where she didn't have to be what she was.

Made to be and it was all about this journey

in with Logan trying to help his essential child

Become something more than himself. That's that's

just a universal thing with You know between

parents and children parents want their children

to have a better life than they did and he saw

that his child Was going down the same exact

path that that he was going down and he didn't

want that life for her And I think this whole

movie was about him Trying to make it so that

that wasn't the case for her because I think

he He did see himself in her and he wanted something

more for her because he felt something for her

too and he he knows exactly what her life is

gonna be like if she goes down the same path

that he has and I feel like that was the complete

journey here. So these villains were just obstacles

and they were just motivators to To push it along

so I didn't really have a problem with there

wasn't one that did more I think that they all

were just kind of tools I liked the guy with

the metal arm the gold tooth. I think he was

pretty cool Think you do what he needed to do.

I think the the clone Logan I think they probably

could have used him a little bit more They just

kind of like let him out of the box a couple

times like you're on the cage Go do your thing

like a couple times and you're good So they're

there probably could have even been more with

him But I'm glad I like the payoff with that,

you know with the clone and stuff So I think

that I was okay with I didn't have a problem

with with the villains and I didn't have any

spectacular feelings toward them either also

led to some interesting imagery as far as as

him battling his younger self and so to speak

mentally and then physically as well I guess.

Just one other scene I wanted to get your guys

thoughts on before we kind of get into the the

closing thoughts on the film and some spoiler

thoughts I guess towards the end. Some other

people, like I said, the one problem that I've

seen some people bring up is the violence. And

then another problem that a lot of people point

to is the scene involving the family on the farm.

And if it was necessary, if it wasn't necessary,

if it allowed the movie to get a little bit too...

back into the superhero film feel and a little

less into what we've been getting here with this

kind of pseudo -western feel, you know, with

these older mutants dealing with life and dealing

with something that I guess we haven't talked

about too much, which is dealing with aging and

stuff like that, which we'll get to in a little

bit here in our closing thoughts. But a lot of

people don't like that scene with the farm family.

I guess it didn't stand out to me either way

when I saw it. Dan, what was your thoughts? on

that scene and how it either fit or did not fit

the feel of the rest of the movie. To me it fit

the feel of the rest of the movie pretty well

and to me it felt like a very western scene where

you have, you know, assisting this family and

they thank you with food and coming to their

home. I think the point that they're directing

their... Comments towards is not necessarily

that part where you know he's standing up for

that family and kind of you know Etc. It does

have a western feel I agree I think that they're

talking about once the Once the rest of the people

show up on that scene and the sequence that plays

out turns a little bit more comic book I guess

is what they're saying. I don't know if I agree

or disagree with that But I guess it's more towards

the latter half of what happens with that sequence

I don't know. Again, I guess the latter half

of that sequence to me has that Patrick Stewart

moment, which I think is pretty brilliant. And

then just the element of tragedy for him thinking

that, for whatever reason, the shock of it being

Logan doing what he did, but obviously not being

Logan. I mean, I could see the... Issue with

it being a clone like I mentioned and being like

a younger version of Logan I could see why some

people would have a problem with that I personally

didn't like it was working so well for me at

that moment in time that it just I was just going

with it and I think it yeah, it's maybe the subtext

becoming text, which is I think sometimes okay

and it's If you're going to have a villain for

Wolverine you like you know having something

that can be a threat at that moment in time,

you know like I think it was built up that that

was the ultimate threat would be while you have

someone that's powerful as Wolverine now more

powerful and you have a Wolverine that's a shell

of himself like like the first time in Wolverine

movie, you know outside the fact of him, you

know Losing his healing factor altogether. I

was like, you know, I felt worried and the stakes

were risen for me So I really liked that moment

just the the relationships that they were able

to get just the small moments of like Laura listening

to the music and I thought that was interesting.

I guess there's maybe some cliche elements, but

it worked for me. Amanda, what did you think

of that whole sequence? I was surprised to see

Eric LaSalle from, what was he, from ER all of

a sudden show up. I don't know when the last

time I saw Eric LaSalle. But what did you think

of that whole sequence? Because it also gave

us something interesting there because you have

Wolverine who is, from the beginning, their first

introduction to this family. It wants nothing

to do with it, like you said before. He's apprehensive.

He doesn't want to get involved in things. He

doesn't want to interact with more people. And

he, from the beginning, is seeing the potential

for danger here, but you're... kind of juxtaposing

that with what Dan was saying with Professor

X and his desire to just have this normal interaction

and this normal family feel in a normal evening,

I guess. So what did you think of that whole

sequence? No, you just talked all about it. Yeah.

I think that it really worked because what Professor

X wants is this normal scene. He wants that for

Laura and he wants that for Logan because he

thinks that they deserve that and I think that

it did a really good job of setting up this hope

that they could have a normal life they could

have a father -daughter relationship they could

be a family this is what being a family looks

like and you can have that but we see for the

people that you know, Logan and Laura are because

of what they've been made and they're, you know,

things that have been following them and even

the people that are following them, they can't

have that life and Logan's tried, we've seen

him try and so he is very quick to to not want

to You know be a part of that because he's been

burned by that before and I think that he does

You know have that hope because we we get that

comment You know towards them that he makes you

know This is what it feels like and so he knows

what real family feels like and I think if he

had any chance At having a family it would have

been with Laura because she can understand You

know him and his plight you know more than anybody

really so it's it's really heartbreaking to see

that this is set up that He he they set up this

false hope and then but then they show the reality

of the situation So I think it it definitely

is in line with the rest of the movie and pulls

things along Matt any thoughts on that sequence

before we get to the final thoughts and some

of the emotional beats that we haven't talked

about I loved the first half where they were

all family and it had that like it had It was

great because it had this, like, this is what

all of these characters should have. This is

what they should be aspiring to. This is what

they should want. But it also had that, like,

mounting tension of they're on a ticking clock

here. They need to get out of here or it's going

to go bad. And then it goes bad. And as I said,

when we were standing outside the theater, my

only complaint is that I disliked that the guy

tried to take a shot at Logan at the end. Kind

of like because, you know, I don't know. it like

cements it cements that like you're not like

us and you can't be trusted in in logan and i

don't like that but i mean it's it's a good storytelling

element it's not bad Alright, if we haven't spoiled

anything yet, we will definitely get into spoilers

here in the next two minutes as we kind of give

our final thoughts So if you don't want if you

haven't seen the movie yet, please fast forward

about You know five ten minutes into the record

But Dan speaking specifically of some of the

emotional beats speaking specifically of some

of the characters How did some of those final

moments work and not work for you? And how do

you think they handled all of that and was anything

shocking to you or which which moment hits you

the most? I mean, the Xavier Mower I talked about,

I think that kind of hit me. I thought he might,

I mean, he didn't watch the trailers and think

it was evident he was gonna die, but I think

the way it did it, it was shocking just because

I got so wrapped up into that. It was kind of

elegant, silky there. I didn't really consider

what could be. You know, we see the final moments

between Laura and... Hugh Jackman. And I hear

a lot of people saying like, you know, James

Wayne Gold even made this point as a director

that, you know, you can make a much better film

comic book wise when you don't have to worry

about building universes or sequels and stuff

like that. And people are kind of pointing to

this and saying, hey, great comic book movies

happen when you're not worried about, you're

just focused on the movie that you're making.

And I understand that, but I think that's kind

of short -sighted because I think a lot of the

emotional beats and a lot of the weight of this

film, the feelings towards these characters were

due to the fact of everything that came before.

And to me, it's not an example of what a movie

can be when you don't focus on the sequels or

the next movie. It's an example of what... sequels

can build to and what a universe can build to

because I don't know if I have the same relationship

with this movie if I don't haven't had 17 years

of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine or I don't know

if like seeing Xavier the way he is is nearly

as impactful if I haven't seen Professor Xavier

in X -Men 2 and X -Men and seeing him as kind

of the you know the the leader of the X -Men

and the the element of hope that he once was

I don't know if it works just as well I mean

I think the movie itself it does work on its

own, but I think it's unfair to not credit those

movies that came before to also be a part of

what makes this film successful. So I just hear

that a lot, and I just wanted to mention that.

So yeah, those were obviously the two beats that,

like, I'll be honest, like, my eyes were not

dry in the final moments between that exchange,

and so, and the final shot, too, worked for me

a great deal. Amanda, were your eyes dry? No,

I had to like hold up a bunch of napkins to my

nose just so I could, I knew I was going to have

to keep blowing it so I was just like stopping

the flow of all the tears and snot just right

there. It was pretty awful. I think that the

Xavier's death, since we kind of knew it was

coming, It was sad and it was heartbreaking to

see the reactions to his death. Not actually

seeing his death scene, but not nearly as difficult

as when we see the final moments between Laura

and Logan. And seeing the hurt that both of them

are going through because they finally found

family in each other. and they finally found

something that both of them really had been lacking

and wanted and they'd only been together for

a short time so it was really tragic in that

too and then even um you know the final scene

when Laura takes his cross and makes it an X

I think that was super perfect too and the the

exchange between them before that is is so heartbreaking

and and so true to What what really was trying

to You know be put forth from this from this

journey like I said earlier trying to you know

Push Laura to be something more than what she

was made to be and exactly what Hugh Jackman

always wanted to and could never exceed that

Matt what about you? What was your kind of take

as some of those things happen towards the end

and did one? did one thing work more than you

as far as I don't know if you had teary eyes

like Amanda and Dan as well or if you were dry

-eyed the whole time? I mean as the as the resident

guy who cries at every movie I'm baffled I was

the only one who didn't cry I guess because like

sometimes I'll just sit there and openly weep

like some movies really just get to me and somehow

this one didn't I mean I guess Because like,

as much as I want Logan to do well, as much as

I'm behind him, and Wolverine, one of my favorite

characters growing up, like, he's not a good

guy. Like, he's a bad guy who does good things.

And so I guess, I don't know, I got more sad

about Professor X's death by a lot, but at the

same time, it's one of those things where it's

like, yeah, he's becoming a problem, and death

might be better for him than life. I don't even

know how much he's enjoying living. And so it's

kind of like, I don't know. I don't want to say

these guys deserve death or should have died.

But at the same time, the world's probably better

for it. So it's like, I never cried. Not to say

I wasn't emotionally moved, not to say it wasn't

sad, but it didn't hit me with that emotional

impact. And to be the guy who's always in the

opposite corner against Amanda, I thought moving

the... Cross to an ex was the corniest dumbest

thing ever like I thought that almost ruined

the end of that movie Or I was like why why?

Like does she even know what the X -Men are has

she even heard of the X -Men? Yeah, the entire

thing is oh, I guess the comic books. Yeah, okay

for the X -Men in that like I go going back to

the the idea of like the Liberty balance of printing

the legend I think that you know I think that

that's why that moment worked for me because

she does have this kind of um you know this thought

of what the x -men are and i don't know i it's

a corny i don't know i didn't find it corny i

found it very moving to be honest so i guess

i guess i got so lost that action scene i forgot

that her whole thing was the x -men and it really

struck me as as corny and overdone at the time

but i i guess i don't hate it as much as i thought

i hated it at the time It's like it really bothered

me. I was like that was dumb, but I guess it

actually works for the characters It makes sense

narratively it just really struck me as odd at

the moment and I think for me the death of Xavier

happened so fast that I wasn't able to emotionally

I think His moments that were more emotional

for me is like what Dan was saying some of the

moments leading up to it and some of the Realizations

of him. I mean, you know this night and etc so

but the actual death didn't hit me emotionally

because of the manner it happens, but I I think

what really gets me is, you know, I was anticipating

possibly seeing the death of Xavier and the death

of Wolverine so those two aren't gonna have as

much of an impact, but I wasn't anticipating

From the child's point of view and just hearing

her say the the word daddy and just kind of that

interaction like Amanda was saying where they

just got to form this relationship and form this

bond for it to be ripped out like that that was

the closest that I got to being teary -eyed in

the theater was just seeing it from the child's

standpoint because that is something I wasn't

prepared for or wasn't expecting so I think that

was probably one of the biggest emotional beats

for me and definitely resonated and I'm with

the other guys I didn't mind the the cross being

turned to the axe just based on the comic books

being kind of the only thing she knew of other

possible you know characters or things that scenes

like her or however the kids interacted maybe

they would tell stories or talk about it or talk

about these kind of books so it made sense to

me as something that she would look up to. One

other thing that's I guess somewhat spoilerific

and I just wanted to get your guys' thoughts

on because obviously one thing that we were talking

about, Amanda and I when we left the theater

was the idea that this film didn't Say much at

first I guess at first glance and just first

reaction It didn't talk a lot about what happened

to all of the other mutants and what happened

to all of the other x -men Etc that we had seen

in previous films etc etc, but we do get the

mention that there was incident involving Professor

Xavier that was worse than anything that we saw

in this exact film and from just speaking with

others That incident would have been an incident

that had wiped out the rest of the X -Men and

the rest of the mutants that had existed at that

point So I wanted to get you guys as I take on

the decision i guess in the film to to leave

that out was a good decision was a bad decision

did you know when they were talking about uh...

event with things either that that was tied into

the death of the rest of the x -men et cetera

or i guess what was your take on and that's it

i thought it was far ahead i thought it was a

smart move of not including that flashback because

uh... you know i think one thing that's that

well is not like you know it's way to do fan

service and you go out of its way to like show

other characters i don't think necessarily needed

it i think we got everything we could put the

pieces together and uh at first just you know

based upon my knowledge of x -men or old man

logan now with x -men not being there with xavier

saying you know kind of what did you do logan

my thought was that he was somewhat responsible

for the death of uh of the x -men or at least

the reason why they're in the situation they

are so i kind of like the way they piece it together

and and they're able to The show what happened

with that and I like also that When it comes

to the ending it's still somewhat open -ended.

We don't know exactly where they're going. Is

it real? It's not real. So I Like I liked how

it didn't have to answer every question. So another

interesting thing is that mangled actually did

or there maybe i don't know if this is mangled

or one of the writers uh said or said that they

did make this scene or they did write this scene

like it it was written at one point that uh you

would see it right away at the beginning of the

film where xavier has this uh what was it westchester's

that they're saying the incident where everybody

uh all the x -men do die um and this is a quote

from him but It also made the movie about that.

It was really interesting, but it suddenly made

the movie about X -Men dying as opposed to allowing

the movie to be kind of an unwinding onion, like

allowing you to kind of enter the story and go,

where is this going? So Matt, I knew we were

talking about it right out of the theater, but

do you agree with Dan that it was a good idea

to not go that route and to maybe make the emphasis

less on the rest of the X -Men and more about

just what's going on with who's left? Ah, it

might be the best idea narratively. Like, it

probably made the best movie doing that. That

said, I'm still really curious. I'd love to know

what would happen. And it would be great if they

touched on it in a future movie, but I don't

need it, and the movie was probably better for

it. What do you think, Amanda? I would have liked

to have seen it. I think that, you know, maybe

that would have set the tone a little bit more

on what... you know, Xavier's capable of and

what they're all kind of dealing with and the

solitary life that they're living and, you know,

how it's really affecting them based on what

they've seen happen. Isn't Westchester where

they had the school? I might have said the wrong

thing. I don't know. I think that's what they

said, but I'm pretty sure that's where they had

the school, right? I believe so. Like upstate

New York? So maybe it was something at the school.

Yeah, could have been. I kind of agree with Dana.

I do, like... Like Matt and Amanda saying I would

be curious to see it. It would be fun to see

it from a fan service standpoint I don't know

it that film is the best idea for it to be in

this type of film because I think it does change

the tone and it does change some of the things

especially if it would have been right at the

beginning of the film it would have I just feel

like it presents a different feel like you said

it becomes more about that it becomes more about

this you know the memories of seeing these specific

X -Men dying instead of more focused on just

Xavier and Logan and effects of that event had

on them, as well as all these other things. They

didn't have to show all these people dying, but

maybe show some of Professor Xavier, you know,

having some flashbacks to that. I guess that

could have been a way they did it, too. They

don't have to show the entire event, but they

could have given us a couple little glimpses

and to see, you know, a little bit more of what

we're dealing with. I also think it does add

a little mystery to it, which is always fun for

me. I like to not necessarily, like Dan said,

not have all the questions answered, so you got

to kind of think about them and fill it in your

head and have conversations with people. about

it, so I did like that aspect of it. Let's go

around real quick, give final grades. I don't

know if you want to rank this against the other

Wolverine movies, rank this against the rest

of the X -Men films, Marvel films, or just a

straight grade. Any way you want to do it, Dan,

where does Logan sit with you from a grading

or a ranking or any type of standpoint? Well,

for me, it's a 9 out of 10 with the potential

of going up on rewatch. I didn't rank the X -Men

films, and I still, for me, and I don't know,

If objectively, it would be the best movie, but

first class, I just have a huge admiration for

that movie. So that's one for me. Logan sits

right behind it at two. Then Days of Future Past.

Then X2. It's been a while since I've seen X2,

but I remember loving that movie a great deal.

Then Deadpool, if you want to count that. Then

after that, I would say The Wolverine. And then

X -Men, the first X -Men, which I think is...

I don't appreciate a film. I mean, it's a lot.

I mean, it's where it all started. Yes, it's

action is nothing near what we get today, but

it also had like micro budget. And then after

that, you know, Last Stand and, you know, Origins,

Wolverine's Blast by far. Amanda, what about

you? What kind of grade out of 10 do you give

Logan? I'm just gonna give it a 9 out of 10 to

I would really need to sit down and and try to

figure out you know the order of Ranking for

the x -men movies. I don't think I will put Deadpool

in it I just didn't get a super x -men vibe from

it even though we got a little glimpse into it,

but I have a definite soft spot for The first

x -men movie that was something I played on repeat

constantly like there was months where you know

once I had bought I would fall asleep watching

that every night, so there's definitely a soft

spot there for that, but I would I think I'm

with Dan. I don't know the exact order I would

put all of the films, but I have a sneaky suspicion

that my top three would involve First Class,

Days of Future Past, and Logan, just because

those three are some of the ones that I think

I've graded the highest out of all the ones as

we've gone along. For this one, I think I would

give it an 8 out of 10. I'm going to be 8 out

of 10, but I think on, like Dan said, maybe Rewatch,

it would rank even higher. I had a lot of expectations.

for having a lot of emotional moments. I did

not have the expectations for liking the style

and the way that this felt not really like a

superhero film to me. It felt like, I mean, obviously

we had a lot of superhero action and superhero

characters, but I liked the subtlety and the

nuances of the way that the director did this.

So eight out of 10 for me. What about you, Matt?

Yeah, 8 out of 10. I think it's a real good movie.

It's not necessarily for me, but I'm going to

recognize that it is very well done. I haven't

seen any of the solo Wolverine movies except

for this one, probably because they all sounded

terrible. One of them was. At least one. So,

you know, I think I can agree with you with the

Days of Future Past and the other one that was

recent, First Class, and this one being the top

three of the X -Men movies. Alright, so you'll

have to let us know if you agree or disagree

with our takes on Logan, two 8 out of 10s and

two 9 out of 10s. So obviously big fans here

at Cinema Geeks of the film. Logan, just quick

as far as business goes, Blu -ray is being released

this week and something that you can get your

hands on would be Passengers, Solace, Collateral

Beauty and Fences as far as 2016 releases. And

then also coming out on Blu -ray, Doctor Who,

the complete 4 series and the Dead or Alive 3.

Any of those things float your boat, Amanda?

I would definitely want to see Fences since I

didn't catch that in the theaters. I want to

see Collateral Beauty too, but it's like a Christmas

movie. I don't like watching Christmas movies

and soccer. Dan, anything that you would be willing

to spend money on in that list? Dead and Alive,

is that the video game based movie? I believe

so. Like Dead and Alive or Dead or Alive? No,

Dead or Alive. Okay, yeah, maybe nothing Okay,

maybe nothing. Um, oh Geez fences I would I thought

this was okay. I probably had nothing out there

I would I would go out and buy but I might run

fences again and be interested in watching it

for a second time Yeah, I haven't seen fences.

So I would definitely be interested in seeing

that one. I like passengers more than a lot of

people did I think it was fun, but I don't necessarily

need to own it Matt. Dr. Who? I mean, I don't

even know what it means by fourth series because

it's like the Like the newest ones on like the

ninth series or something and those have all

been released So like and it's not the old stuff

Unless it's like unless the fourth series of

the new stuff wasn't released in blu -ray because

it was like 2005 I don't know what they could

I would I'd like to see passengers though I think

that I still think that movie looks good even

though I haven't seen it I really liked it, you

should see it. Alright, and coming out for new

releases this week, obviously the big theater

release is what we kind of teased before, Beauty

and the Beast will be released wide here after

you listen to this episode. As far as limited

or video on demand releases, we had some things

that we talked about in recent episodes, the

Belko experiment, T2 train spotting, the Terrence

Malick movie Song to Song, and if you're wanting

to see some just cheaper, straight to on demand

type films, here we go. go here. How about burn

your maps? Listen to the plot for this one, guys.

A family in emotional turmoil is taken by surprise

when an eccentric eight -year -old American boy,

Wes, has an existential epiphany. He believes

that he is in fact a Mongolian goat herder. So

that's what that film is about. That plot again

every time. It gets better because they decide

that they're going to try to help him out by

connecting the child's dream to his reality through

the use of crowdfunding to try to get him to

actually go experience it. what he's thinking

is. Kickstart my goat herd. So that one's coming

out. There's a comedy starring J .K. Simmons

and Mule Hirsch and Christian Shaw called All

Nighter. There's a World War II drama called

13 Minutes and a sci -fi thriller starring the

awesome pairing of Dominique Monahan and Tom

Sizemore called Atomica. And Amanda, there's

a horror coming out called The Devil's Candy.

Sounds tasty All right as far as credit conversation

we never do this But I'm actually gonna go through

a little bit of some feedback for the show we

I don't think we've ever read an iTunes review
