Hey, this is Steve Blum, and you are listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. Today on this

week's episode of the Cinema Geeks, we take a

look back at our fall predictions. And we look

ahead to see what the final two months of 2016

have in store. All that and more coming up on

today's episode with the Cinema Geeks. That's

right. This is another episode of The Cinema

Geeks, and I am one of your Cinema Geeks optimists

solo. And joining me today, as you heard in the

introduction, is Hard Candy Mandy. Hello. Move

your revolt, Dan. How's it going? Too bad. And

Frizzly Sant. Hi. Hello, hi and how's it going?

And today we are going to be tackling like you

heard in the introduction going back to do some

more predictions, some more looks at our past

predictions as we make our final look ahead for

the 2016 year. So we've obviously done this throughout

the year and we'll get to see what the scoreboard

looks like going into this last round. So a little

winter preview coming your way today. But before

we can get to the winter preview, we have to

look back. at what happened in the fall. Just

which one of us is the most Nostradamus -like?

Going into today's episode, the standings were

for the box office. Dan, you are leading the

way with 15 points. Amanda and I are tied in

for second with 12 points and Matt I know you

had a disadvantage because you weren't there

the first couple times but you have nine points

so you're only three points behind Amanda and

I so you've made a quick comeback. So when we

look to the fall we did just the two months so

we were just looking at September and October

so we have each made we each made two pick to

clicks, two bombs, and one wild card. So let's

start with the results for the picks to click.

Dan you picked whatever we're gonna call this.

The technical name is Boo! A Madea Halloween

as one of your picks to click. How are you feeling

about that one? Have you looked at anything as

far as what that one made? I don't know if it

made much, but I also know it didn't cost much,

so I'm pretty sure it made a profit. The budget

for Boo! A Madea Halloween was $20 million, and

the box office domestic is $66 million so far.

There you go. So you will score a point. Matt,

you also had that as one of your picks to click,

so you guys will both score a point for that.

Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. And Amanda, your

first pick for a pick to click was Magnificent

Seven. How do you think it did? I want to say

good because it was an awesome movie. Magnificent

Seven had a budget of $90 million, and currently

domestic gross is $92 million. Oh my gosh, I

squeaked that one out. So it probably has a few

more dollars to make here, but it is already

above its budget. So we'll count that as a point

for you in the mat. That was your other pick.

So you're already scoring two points for your

box office picks for the fall. He squeaked that

out like a farting class. What was that from?

I thought you were pulling that from somewhere.

My first pick for a pick to click was Sully,

a budget of 60 million. domestic box office so

far of 123. So easy point for that one. Dan,

your second pick was Blair Witch, which I thought

was going to be called Blair Witch 2 or something

like that. It literally was just called Blair

Witch. Budget, five million dollars. So it's

always good to go with those horror films. Box

office of 20 million. So quadrupled its budget.

So a clean sweep for Dan as well. Dan and Matt

both. Not losing any points for the picks to

click Amanda. Do you remember what your second

box office pick was to click? He was keeping

up with the Joneses. Oh Lord have mercy. What

did I do? Budget of 40 million box office 13.

Yikes So you failed to score your second point

on the box office as do I because my pick was

inferno budget of 75 million and it's made 27

It's only been out for like a week or something.

Yeah, but it's not looking good for Inferno.

So you and I will take one point. Dan and Matt,

two points apiece. Well, Wonder Woman sucks then

because she didn't pull through on this one for

me. I'm worried because I got Tom Hanks in the

PFFL. Yeah, it's not looking good for that. Well,

you got Sully though. So Sully will get your

points. Inferno will subtract those points. So

it'll be a wash. Fingers crossed he gets a nomination

for Sully. there you go as far as bets to bomb

dan your first bet to bomb was jack reacher never

go back or a budget of 60 million box office

50 million so it has not made its budget back

yet so we'll count that as a point for you i

had jack reacher as well so i will take a point

to amanda you had miss peregrine's home for the

peculiar's peculiar children budget 110 million

that's a big budget Alright, another point for

you then on that one. Matt, you went right in

the face of Dan because Dan had Blair Witch as

a pick to click and you had it as a bomb. Obviously

based on what you said before, not good for you

with the Blair Witch prediction. I don't know

anyone who saw it. All my horror fans at work

were like, that looks terrible. I was like, I'm

going to bet against this. Yeah, with those horror

films, it doesn't take a lot of people to see

it for them to make their budget back. Dan and

my second pick for Bet to Bomb was Snowden, and

Snowden's budget was $40 million, and it has

just barely squeaked past the halfway mark for

that. So not looking good for Snowden. Amanda,

Masterminds, you're betting on that one to bomb.

Budget 25, box office 17. So it has not made

its budget back domestically either. Matt, your

second pick? Middle school, the worst years of

my life. Budget? Eight and a half million. Box

office so far? 19. Yeah, low budget movies, man.

You tried to stare fate in its eyes with the

two low budget films and it came back to bite

you on that one. So everybody gets points on

all their bets to bombs except for Matt. So losing

some ground there on that one. Let's move our

way to the wild cards. Amanda, your wild card

was that Madea, boo, Madea, Halloween film or

whatever we're calling that, was gonna be the

lowest Madea film as far as box office goes.

First, do you even know how many Madea films

there has been? No. Anybody like to take a guess?

It's like five or five or six is what I'd guess

I think it's more it's Are you counting the the

ones that are the plays that are directed DVD

or just the actual like movies that are released?

I'm not sure which one box office mojo is is

I would if it's possible They wouldn't count

though. So I'm gonna say nine. Yeah. Um, it's

actually seven according to them so we had The

most money out of all of them so far has been

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail. I didn't even

know that was a movie. I don't know any of the

titles, but actually that's the one I've seen

the most of. That one made 90 million, so that

is number one. Boo, a Madea Halloween. Second

highest Madea film with 66 million. Wow. Then

it goes Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection

in third. Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion.

than Madea's big happy family, than a Madea Christmas,

and in last Diary of a Mad Black Woman. So all

of them above 50 million though. But you will

not get the point since Boo is the second highest,

not the lowest. Dan, your wild card, no weekend

above 50 million. No film would have a weekend

above 50 million. The highest weekend of the

two months? It was actually only one million

apart, so I'll give you both of them. Sully and

Magnificent Seven both had the highest two weekends,

one of them at 34 million and one of them at

35. So, nothing performing too great there. My

prediction was Blair Witch would be the highest

grossing horror film that came out in those two

months. Blair Witch made 20 million, which is

good for second highest, because Ouija... Whatever

you I don't remember what the origin origin of

evil origin of evil made 31 so it beat it by

11 million So I slept on Luigi Matt Your wild

card was Sully would make a less than Captain

Phillips Sully made a hundred and twenty three

million Captain Phillips a hundred and seven

So Sully actually squeaked out and made more

than Captain Phillips and then it might have

a little bit of a longer shelf life too. So we

might have might be getting to add to that total

a little bit. So Dan, you're the only one that

scores a wild card point for that. So five more

points for this section. Amanda, you're getting

three. I am also getting three and Matt, you're

getting two. Oh, good. Looks like Dan is in a

prime position to take the box office crown here

for this first year of predictions. Speaking

of which, let's look at those two months a little

bit overall. At each month, when I do this, I

give the ranking that it is currently holding

in the entire year. So like we know right now

that Finding Dory is ranked number one for the

entire year of 2016. Dan, any guess as to the

highest grossing film in September and October,

where it ranks overall for the year? Ballpark

about what rank it would fall into? 15. That

is... darn close. 16 is the highest so far. So

for September and October, the highest grossing

film of those two months ranks 16th overall.

So that's kind of a sign of the films that came

out during those two months and that film would

be Sully at 123 million. Then anybody else have

guesses as to which ones made the most money?

Let's try to get the top five here. We got Sully

at number one for the two months. Magnificent

seven. Magnificent seven came in. It is currently

the 23rd overall, so it made $92 million. That's

good enough for the second spot for those two

months. We've talked about one of them. We have

not talked about the other two, actually. I don't

remember what came out. Third place would be

Miss Peregrine's Home for the Peculiar, with

its $83 million. And then we go to two that we

haven't talked about that are both at $71 million,

which would be the accountant and girl on the

train. So those are fourth and fifth. And then

it's Storks at $70 million. and boom I made the

Halloween at 66. So those are your top earners

for those two months. As far as bets to bomb

some of the other ones that you guys could have

had besides Miss Peregrine's Deepwater Horizon

had a huge budget 110 million dollars to show

us all those oil spills and explosions so that

has only made 60. We talked about Jack Reacher,

Inferno, Bridget Jones Baby had a budget of 35

millions only made 24. We talked about Snowden,

Masterminds, Keeping Up with the Joneses, The

Light Between the Oceans technically qualifies

as a bomb at this point, as does The Wildlife

and Max Steel. So those would be your bombs.

Everything else has at least made its budget

that came out during those two months. So all

right, let's move on to winter predictions when

it comes to the box office. We have a lot of

films that are crammed into November and December.

It is award season. We have a lot of different

things that are trying to kind of get released

before the end of the year. So a little more

of an interesting field to pick from. Dan, since

you are the box office king right now, why don't

you start? Where do you want to go first? Your

wild card, your bet to bomb, or your pick to

click? I'm going to go with my wild card, just

to start off crazy and all that. OK. So we have

Assassin's Creed coming out, and we've been talking

a lot about video games. So I'm thinking, I was

going back and forth with this, but I'm going

to say. Considering it's a busy month. You have

Star Wars in that month It's Christmas time and

I'm hearing a lot of people not too excited about

Assassin's Creed based upon trailers But you

know, I also thought Deadpool wouldn't make a

lot of money. So I could be wrong, but I'm gonna

say Assassin's Creed will actually have a smaller

opening weekend than Warcraft Wow, oh That is

brutal Assassin's Creed. I could be completely

wrong, but I'm gonna you know, make it fun and

Throw it out there. Do you know, do you know

what? If anything that we've learned when we've

been doing this video game spotlight, this is

smart to bet against video game films as far

as when it comes to money. So I think that's

an interesting one. Amanda, why don't we go to

you next? What is your wild card pick for the

winter box office? Well, wild card. I'm going

to pick on Amy Adams and she's got two films

coming out. So I'm going to say that her film

Nocturnal Animal outperforms Arrival. Nocturnal

animals outperforming a rival in the Amy Adams

battle. So we'll have to see how those go. And

Matt, what's your wild card? Oh, man. Wild cards

are hard. These months. I mean, I feel like the

other ones, it was just like, ah, I'll do this

because it's like part of me wants to say something

about. Assassin's Creed, but there's no way that

that movie's making its budget back now with

how big it is. No, no video game movies ever

made that much money. Like, and part of me wants

to be like something about Rogue One. And it's

like, it's not going to be the highest grossing

because there's no way that's happening, but

it's not going to be the lowest because fucking

episode two did terribly. Like if you just for

inflation, it did terribly. I'm going to say.

How about that Rogue One? does the best of any

movie this year. I think it's gonna beat Civil

War. I think it's gonna beat Dory. That's what

I'm gonna go with. It's a big hill to climb as

far as finding Dory goes, but if it performs

anything like Force Awakens, it should be able

to do that, but I don't know. Are as many people

excited for these Star Wars spinoff films as

they are the actual episodic number ones. We'll

have to wait and see how it goes. It's interesting,

but I think... Betting with Star Wars is always

a good thing. So for my wild card, I'm going

to say this right now we have Finding Dory reigning

supreme at number one and I believe Captain America

Civil War is still at number two. I'm going to

say that three of the top five grossing films

for the year are coming out or have not come

out yet. So I'm going to say that over the course

of the rest of November and December that we're

going to see three of the top five grossing films

for the entire year. I know that's going to be

tough because there's a couple of 400 million

films already in the books with Dory, Captain

America, and then there's a whole bunch in the

high 300s. But I think with the combination of

Rogue One, Harry Potter with the Fantastic Beasts

and Where to Find Them with Moana, the Disney

animated film, and there may be a couple of Wild

Cards in there somewhere, but I think that we're

going to see three of the top five still coming

out this last two months. That will be my wild

card pick. Dan, where do you want to go next?

Well, let's go bet the bomb. And I guess I'm

working backwards with this, but why not? I'm

going to go with bet the bomb. And I think we've

seen sequels that have come out way after the

original and not do well, which didn't do as

well as people were hoping. So I'm going to say

the same thing happens with Bad Santa 2. I'm

going to say that's going to bomb. I like that.

I was surprised at how well Bad Santa, the first

one, did from both a box office and from a review

standpoint. But I can see that happening. It

looks a little crazy there. And sequels sometimes

falter a bit. Amanda, what about your bed to

bomb? One of them. Think this looks a little

fucking stupid, but so I'm gonna put it as but

to bomb looks like you could have a big budget

and I don't know what kind of following this

is gonna have Kristen Stewart. I think it's Nicholas

Holt not good for my freaking Yeah, if that's

the Nicholas Holt movie I'm thinking of this

is the space between us Alright, I'm gonna double

down and pick that one as well and the reason

I'm gonna pick that one is because it's coming

out the same weekend as Star Wars and I Just

don't you know if anybody will even know that

that came out because it's gonna be to craze

for Star Wars And but I'm gonna go a space between

us as well Matt. What's one of your bombs? Like

I said before no video game movies made 200 million

dollars. So Assassin's Creed's going to bomb

All right, so no love for Assassin's Creed from

the panel so far Dan, what about your second

bet to bomb? So this is where this is where guitar

because it's a it's a weird You know, it's a

weird time of year because you have a lot of

movies that or you know your award winner So

they're they're not really ever designed to make

a lot of money So they're you know, they don't

have a huge cast or anything like that. So try

to find something that has somewhat of a budget

or has somewhat of a Potential to like uh at

least come under what you would expect from it

And the one thing I saw was office christmas

party. Um, I guess i'm on an anti -christmas

theme I don't that was an intention. Uh, but

I just I think it doesn't look all that great

and I you know comedies can hear you know, I

I just think that you know, um It's a it's a

busy time a year. Like I said, it's coming out

around the same time to Star Wars and that's

kind of like What's near Star Wars and what's

near Harry Potter and I'm gonna think maybe they

won't do well So that was my thought is maybe

office Christmas party will not do well at the

box office I know it's not a hugely profitable.

It's not a huge budget by any means But it does

have a decently sized cast and I couldn't find

a budget for it So I'm assuming it's more than

something like, you know Some of the the indie

films that I'll be kind of coming out. So I'm

gonna say that bombs All right, so no love for

the Christmas themed movies from Dan. Amanda,

what's your second bomb? Ah, I don't know about

this. I'm cool with Woody Allen. Hailey Steinfeld

has some catchy songs. Really don't like her

though, so I'm going to go with Edge of 17. All

right. I didn't never even heard of that film

until like a couple weeks ago. So I must have

missed that one when we were looking ahead at

this year. So the Edge of 17 for Amanda. My other

one, I'm doubling down on the Star Wars weekend

because another film that comes out that weekend

is a film called Collateral Beauty starring Will

Smith. and it seems like it has somewhat of a

star -studded cast. I mean, there's a lot of

big names, so I'm guessing that they had to pay

these people to be in this movie, so I'm hoping

that the budget creeps up enough to surpass what

it's gonna make, which is literally nothing.

I think it looks super cute, though. It does

have, like, a star -studded cast. It's like a

Christmas Carol story, like the Christmas story,

but in a different way. Like, instead of being

visited by, like, the ghost of Christmas past

and things like that, it's, like, time and love

and... and things like that that he's writing

letters to. And I think it looks super freaking

cute. And I know that Will Smith hasn't been

doing great. So we'll see. He did not sell me

on that. Did you watch the trailer? No. You should.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's a Will Smith. It's

like a romantic type drama comedy type thing.

That's something going on. I don't know. It just

didn't look appealing to me. So I'll go with

the two films that are directly competing against

Star Wars or Space Between Us and Collateral

Beauty. Matt, what's your other bomb? Oh man,

like I said, I'm having trouble with these months.

But I think that Sing coming out during the Christmas

time, we've already got Moana, which is definitely

gonna blow it out of the water. I feel like animated

movies do well when there aren't a lot of options

for kids, and there are a lot of options for

kids during Christmas. So I'm gonna say that

that one comes close but doesn't. Alright, so

singing as a bomb I can see that I was so torn

on that one that I didn't put it down on any

of my Predictions because I don't know which

way it's gonna go. I think it's either gonna

do Better than we all think or it's just gonna

completely Fall apart so I couldn't decide on

the movie sing so that leaves picks to click

as the only thing left for us Dan What's your

first I'm gonna go with the movie that maybe

it's cheating because it's coming out this weekend

But I'm gonna go with a rival. I think you know

we are we need something that's Positive and

hearing good buzz. It looks good and you know,

I thinking it might do well So I'm gonna go with

arrival for mine for a click I think I might

be coming out about the right time to You know,

it still has another week before Harry Potter.

So there's not a lot competing with it this weekend

We'll see. I think there's been a little bit

of buzz for arrival that I wasn't expecting so

Pick to click for arrival Amanda. You're sector

your first pick to click. I'm gonna hit up the

Disney train and go with Moana All right, Moana,

as your pick, the animated trend hopefully continues

for what we've seen so far this year. Matt, what's

your first pick to click? So I'm gonna go with

a slightly different pick than I think everyone

else is going with. I'm gonna go with A Monster

Calls. To me, it smacks of Birdman, which did

well, like this whole altered reality, what are

we seeing, what are we not seeing, what is and

isn't real, you know, and it's got great people

in it. So I'm gonna... Thank on that one. Yeah,

I think there's a lot of us, especially in the

movie community, the film community for that

one. I don't know how well the buzz is outside

of that, but I'm excited for that one. So I can

see that making some money as well. I'm going

to go directly against Dan, I guess, because

we're both picking a film from the same weekend.

I believe they're both coming out this weekend,

but maybe this one's more of a limited release

first. But I'm going to go with Billy Lynn's

long halftime walk as a pick to click, just because

I think it's the type of film that Garners a

lot of talk and a lot of like And you know once

those initial people see it if it does well I

think it's one of those that kind of grows a

little bit especially when you got the the patriotic

aspect and kind of the Story behind it. I think

that one could resonate I looked when I first

heard about it way back when at the beginning

of the year I didn't take it serious, and I thought

it was kind of silly looking but after seeing

a couple trailers and seeing the reaction of

people in the theater just from watching the

trailer, I think that one might resonate with

some people. So Billy Lynn's long halftime walk

is my first pick to click. Dan, what about your

second? I'm going to go with, you know, looking

at animation. I think Disney is a good one, but

I think Sing has a huge potential. It's got so

many people. It's one thing it is coming around

the Christmas time and people often during that

time, okay, let's find a family movie to go to.

We've already seen Star Wars four or five times.

Let's see something else. And, you know, there's

always a, you know, animated movies tend to do

well. They stand around. Well, I'm just gonna

be out for at least a few weeks by that time.

So I'm gonna go with Sing as my next pick to

click. All right, more animation love. Amanda,

what's your last pick to click? I gotta go where

my heart is, and that's to Harry Potter. And

I'm gonna go with Fantastic Beasts and where

to find them. All right, Fantastic Beasts and

Where to Find Them is your second one. Matt,

what's your second one? Well, since Dan is going

to be like that, I'm going to pick one of his

bombs. I'm going to say Office Christmas Party

beats its budget. All right. So those two going

at it in two different films and hoping for opposite

results. Interesting. Dan got 100 % of his points

last time, so just take that into consideration.

I mean, I was I'm so torn. I want to hope that

Assassin's Creed actually makes money, but it's

going to have such a huge budget that I can't

pick that. So I'll try to go with hopefully one

of the softballs there and I'll go on the animation

route as well with Moana. I think that's going

to do phenomenal for Disney and the rocks in

it. So that seems like a winning recipe. All

right, that's it for our box office predictions.

Let's turn our attention now to the Rotten Tomatoes

world as we look back at the fall predictions

we made there. Going into last time's episode,

Dan, you were winning this one as well. You had

eight points for the Rotten Tomatoes. I had six,

and Amanda and Matt were both tied for three

points. As far as certified fresh picks from

the fall, Dan, Matt, and myself all had Birth

of a Nation, and Birth of a Nation currently

is certified fresh, even though technically it

has a 74 % it still has the certified fresh label

on Rotten Tomatoes, so we will award all three

of us a point for that one. Amanda, your first

certified fresh pick was the Light Between the

Oceans, and that currently has a 60%. So not

a bad score, but not high enough to be certified

fresh. So no points for you on that one. Going

back to Dan, then, since Matt and I had the same

one as him for the first pick, Dan, you had Deepwater

Horizon. Do you know how that one did? I don't

know. OK, I think. I don't know, honestly. Currently,

83%. Interesting. So 83 % for Deepwater Horizon.

So that means you get both of your certified

fresh picks. a Monster Calls, which got pushed

to December. I want to say, though, that currently

it does have quite a few reviews, but I don't

know if any of you guys picked it for the December

pick, so I'll hold off on what its actual score

is. Matt, your second pick was Queen of Katwe,

and that currently has a 92%. Yeah. That is definitely

high enough for you to get that point as well

as your Birth of Nation point, so you get both

points there. Amanda, your second point. Second

pick was Girl on the Train. That one currently

has a 44 % actually. What the fuck? So not a

lot of love out there for Girl on the Train.

I didn't think it quite deserved 44%, but definitely

not high enough to get to the 75. I'm getting

totally screwed on these points, y 'all. Alright,

let's shift to Certified Rotten. Dan, your first

pick was Bridget Jones' Baby. We all kind of

seconded that even though we didn't pick it.

Bridget Jones' Baby currently has a 77%. Single

Cat Ladies Unite! What? Did only, like, the people

who made that movie review it? How is that? I

don't know. I mean, I have not seen it, but I

can't imagine that that's worthy of a 77%. Is

that, ironically, 77 %? Dana's speechless. Amanda,

your first rotten pick was Snowden, and currently

Snowden actually has a 63%. What the fuck? So

Snowden, even though not making a lot of money,

scored fairly well. My first pick for certified

rotten was - Should I get that point or not?

No, you have to be below 25%. My first pick was

keeping up with the Joneses, because what? And

that currently has a 20%. So I'll be the first

one that's scoring a point here for the certified

rotten picks. Alright Mr. Gloaty Pants, move

on. Matt, you had the wildlife. The wildlife

currently has a 15%. Ooh, mine's lower. Yes,

so you got that one for sure. Dan, your second

pick was Inferno. And Inferno currently has a

20%. So that is not good for Inferno, but good

for you because you get a point for that. Amanda,

your second pick was 31. And it did get pushed

a little bit, so it hasn't had its as wide of

a release yet. But based on the reviews, it only

has a 48%. So not quite low enough yet for you

to score a point there. We'll have to see if

it gets more reviews if it drops. And my second

pick was Friend Request, which also got pushed.

And it currently only has a 38%, so not low enough

for me to score any points there. Matt, your

second pick was Max Steel. Max Steel currently

has a 0%. Woo! Only 16 reviews, but a 0 % so

far. That's ridiculously low, obviously, so you

can score both points for that. So obviously

we've given some away. This actually was a little

bit wider open field than we've seen in recent

times. There was one, two, three, four, five,

six, seven, eight, nine, ten films that you can

score for fresh. And there was actually seven

films that you could score for rotten. Usually

when we have one or two choices, but there's

actually seven. And we've talked about a few

of them with Inferno, Keeping Up with the Joneses,

Wildlife and Max Steel. There was three other

rotten picks that you could have had. Does anybody

want to take a shot at it? We've talked about

one of them. Mrs. Peregrines? Nope. It was actually

one of your wild card picks. Boo, Medea Halloween

only has a 22%. So it might have made some money,

but it only has a 22%. Then American Pastoral,

21%. And When the Bow Breaks, 6%. So those were

your rotten ones. As far as your certified fresh,

we have Moonlight, 98%, Queen of Catway, 92%,

Certain Women, 89%, then Sully, 83%, Deepwater

Horizon, 83%, get this one, Ouija, Origin of

Evil, 82%. This shit looks scary. Just saying.

American Honey 80%, Denial 79%, Bridget Jones

Baby 77%, Birth of a Nation 74%. How did Bridget

Jones' fucking baby beat out Snowden? How did

it beat out anything? It beat out Light Between

Oceans, Magnificent Seven, Snowden, A Girl on

the Train, all of those. Fucking cat ladies,

man. Amanda's not happy with the results so far.

I'd be happy if I got some motherfucking points.

Anyway, let's make a shift that maybe will make

things a little bit more bright as we talk about

points that haven't been determined yet when

we make our way to our winter predictions for

fresh and rotten picks. Amanda, let's let you

start the way. So what do you have as either,

what do you want to start with, fresh or rotten?

I'm going to go with fresh. What's one of your

picks? The founder, Mickey D's bro, and. I think

Michael Keaton, a little bit of a resurgence.

I think he's going to have some like award presence

again. So we're going to go with that one. All

right. The founder is her first certified fresh

pick. Matt, why don't you go next? Well, I think

I tripled down on it in the PFFL, so I have to

say that Passengers is going to go fresh. All

right. So founder and passenger, Dan? C and M.

Again, this is a little bit tough. I'm gonna

go kind of maybe at a left I don't know left

field, but what I think it looks good. I really

like the trailer I'm gonna go with 20th century

of woman. I think that's gonna have a good chance

of being a well Well, Chris rel review movie

Alright, it's 20th century women. I am gonna

go with my first pick being la la land I just

think it makes sense to kind of ride the train

of Damien Chazelle and what he did last year

or the year before whenever that came out. So

La La Land will be my first pick. Amanda, your

second certified fresh pick. We already talked

about this one, but I think that it's something

that the critics are going to jump on. I was

already crying in the preview, so we're going

to go with Billy Lynn's long halftime walk. All

right, certified fresh for Billy Lynn. Matt,

what's your other pick for certified fresh? A

Monster Calls. Like, it's going to get good reviews.

All right, Monster Calls for Matt. Dan, what

do you think is going to get reviewed well? I

will go with La La Land. So double pick here

for La La Land, and my other pick is going to

be Loving. I think that one won't be seen by

a ton of people, won't make a lot of money or

anything, but I think it will get reviewed well.

Rotten time, Amanda. You seem to be in a rotten

mood about these points, so what's your rotten

pick? both of these movies though i'm actually

excited to see but i don't know how well they're

gonna be received uh and this is kind of hard

to pick some rotten ones honestly so i went with

my first choice is gonna be solace okay it looks

super cool um but uh like kind of a all -studded

star -studded cast whatever i'm trying to say

there so we'll see how it does though all right

matt your first rotten pick The first one barely

got fresh and I think bad Santa to is going to

get right in Right bad Santa to know for the

the sequels here so far from the panel Dan. What's

your first rotten pick? I am going to go. I'm

sorry. I'm being overly dramatic with my picks

I am gonna go with I'm gonna go with actually

gonna go with passengers. I think Jory did poorly

last year and I hope it's good But I don't know

something about it tells me it's not going to

work out. So i'm going to go with passengers

as my first You want to take some chances make

it fun, you know Absolutely. All right for my

first pick i'm gonna go with a thriller Slash

horror film that's coming out in november and

december for some reason I think it missed its

mark. It's releasing december 2nd. Makes no sense

It also stars aaron eckhart. So I think that's

pretty sure fire thing to be rotten It's going

to be the film called incarnate. I just don't

think it might not get enough reviews to actually

have a score but I can't imagine that film getting

reviewed well. So, Amanda, what's your second

one? One that we already talked about, Christmas

movie, collateral beauty, Will Smith. It's got

a ton of freaking people in it. Rachel Weiss,

Keira Knightley, I saw just a ton of people and

watching the preview just kind of gave me like

the Christmas feels. So I'm excited to see Will

Smith in. But you think the movie's going to

be rotten? Yeah, I don't think it's gonna be

well -received, but it's something I'm excited

for. Gotcha. Okay, Matt, your other rotten pick.

I'm gonna go with the other horror -thriller

movie that looks terrible that's coming out way

too late and put in, uh, I want to call it unfriended,

Friend Request. Okay. Friend Request for Matt.

Dan, your other rotten pick. I was gonna go with

Friend Request too. But I'll double up on Office

Christmas Party and say that's gonna be rotten

as well. Okay, Office Christmas party is going

rotten and in my second one I'm gonna go with

the film is actually coming out the same day

as my other rotten pick so incarnate and Kidnap

both come out December 2nd Kidnap stars Halle

Berry and I don't remember the last time Halle

Berry was in a good movie But maybe I'm blanking

on a couple so Kidnap and incarnate I don't know

those don't seem like December films to me So

not only they're coming out of the wrong time,

but I just don't see them get interviewed. Well,

all right kind of flew through that, but let's

take a look back at November, December, because

there is a lot of stuff coming out. I actually

went back to my top 100 most anticipated films

of the year for 2016, and I just looked real

quickly out of my top 35. 10 of them are coming

out. in November or December. So I'm excited

for this last two months, but I want to see what

you guys think first. So, Dan, what are you most

excited about? What are the hidden gems? What

are you interested to see how, as far as November,

December play out? I mean, it seems kind of odd,

obviously, to see Star Wars and stuff like that.

But just going through this today, I guess I

didn't really pay much attention to But while

I'm looking at some of the movies that are coming

out that I'm really watching the trailer, I'm

like, that looks like it could be really good.

And it's gold with Matthew McConaughey. It looks

like the McConaissance is continuing. I think

it could be almost similar to Wolf of Wall Street

and the idea of the way it's going to deal with

kind of the... the way, you know, gaining huge

wealth can affect you. So I just, I love the

style of the trailer too, and I guess I'm hearing

a lot about other movies, but one's gold is not

one I've heard a lot of people bring up. It's

not even one I really even looked into when we

were looking forward to 2016, but seeing it now,

I'm kind of excited for that one. That was one

that was when when I was doing that top 100 list

I couldn't even find I could find one image kind

of of Matthew McConaughey There was no movie

poster There was no there was nothing else about

that film and I put it on there just because

McConaughey But yeah, I'm definitely looking

forward to that one too. Any others that stick

out for you Dan before we give the other Panel

the rest of the panel a chance to chime in I

guess the other one that I was like 27th 20th

century Roman which is the one I I talked about

as my first one I think is going to do well.

Critical, I think that looks really strong, has

some strong performances and I just like the

idea. It looks like it's a period piece in the

70s, but it's not. It's how I like period pieces

where it's not overly using the time period.

It could almost look like it takes place in a

less... Fashion Updated version of now in a way.

So I do look really that looks quite good as

well Amanda, what are you looking forward to

the rest of the year or what's kind of peaking

your interest? Well, I don't care what the record

shows as far as how shitty video game movies

are. I'm excited for Assassin's Creed. I fucking

love the Fassbender effect, and I think that

it looks pretty freaking tight. I got to go on

the roof of our house the other day, and I was

like, Assassin's Creed! It was amazing. She did

scream that while she was on the roof. It just

got me pumped even more. I think it looks all

right. So we'll see if I get my mind blown also

a monster calls I feel like I've been waiting

for that since we did like our most anticipated

of the year. It looks super dope I think the

voice works gonna be awesome really cool concept

to you. Of course Fantastic Beasts and Passengers

looks like I like me some Chris Pratt. So we'll

see what's up All right, Matt anything that's

sticking out to you besides road one Like, honestly,

I just want to make sure I see Rogue One six

times, because I only saw The Force Awakens five

times. Like, I don't want to, like, step on Amanda's

parade. But have you played the Assassin's Creed

games? I played the third one. Yeah, she played

the third one quite a bit. I've played a few

of them and they're great games. I just don't

know that if the movie is going to embody the

spirit of the games. I don't know, because it

looks pretty spot on to me, but I haven't played

all of them, so maybe I'm not the person to ask.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope it does well. I'm not

here to rain on someone's parade. I think they

worked with the animus well, because in the animus,

you're just kind of walking in this weird blank

space. And in this, they actually showed what

was happening to his body while he's in the animus.

I thought that was cool. Think I think that's

a good of the deviations from the original story.

I think that one's an amazing choice I'm just

worried about the the modern day being like isn't

it supposed to be like 70 % of that movie? Which

is not the fun part of that game No, yeah, that's

true. So yeah, maybe I'll see the Harry Potter

one. Like I haven't seen a Harry Potter movie

since like 2003 There we go Amanda's been pulling

for you to watch one of those. Better do it.

As for some of the ones I wanted to highlight

real quick Dan mentioned Gold. It's coming out

that same Christmas weekend is a film called

Fences with Denzel Washington that wasn't on

my radar at all throughout the year but now that

I've seen a few things about it has my interest

peaked a little bit. There's been a film about

Howard Hughes, Warren Beatty's film about Howard

Hughes that's been rumored for like three years

and it's finally coming out. It's called Rules

Don't Apply, November 23rd. So that might be

worth a watch for me. Outside of that, I know

it's already kind of come out, but I'm interested

to get around to see Hacksaw Ridge, to see Mel

Gibson in the director chair again to kind of

see how that works. Outside of that if silent

I didn't put this on any of my predictions because

I'm still convinced that it might not come out

this year But silence for Martin Scorsese is

supposed to come out December 23rd again another

film That's been on people's most anticipated

list for I think like four years So if that actually

comes out, I will definitely be interested in

that Outside of the couple that I've already

mentioned like the founder Lala Landon I think

those are probably the ones I'm looking forward

to the most I'm going back to one more time through

the panel here. I guess as your year shaping

up so far, because we only have these two months

left of films to come out. And obviously we've

all seen different amounts of films. But Dan,

how's 2016 so far for you as it goes for film?

And what do these last two months have to do

in order for you to be happy with 2016? Or do

you not need anything? Are you already happy

with what you got? Well, I would say like Star

Wars, Fantastic Beasts, I think you need to live

up to expectations if this summer's gonna have,

like, to really make up for a lot of the summer

blockbusters that were just godawful or disappointing

or just not nearly as good as we hoped they would

be. So, you know, if those don't turn out, you

know, good, I think that's gonna be bad sign

for 2016. Yeah, I think that the other thing

that kind of just melts off that before you continue

is we got We with those two you have wrote one

you have Harry Potter But we also have the other

ones that we kind of mentioned with Moana and

and if singer something did well The four films

that could do a lot of a lot to kind of recover

some of the lost money From the fall and the

late summer. Yeah, and I didn't continue to I

think you know I still haven't feel like I've

seen the movie that, and I've not seen a lot

of 2016 movies so far that maybe that's the point

of it, but I've not seen that movie where I felt

like, okay, this is the movie of the year, or

these are the movies of the year that I feel

like will go down as. Movies people remember

going forward they're movies. I really like I

really enjoy but I'm like, okay Is there a 12

years of slave for this year? Is there is there

something where it's like a her for this year?

Well, maybe that wasn't you know, hugely popular

for a lot of people but you know for me I love

that movie but basically those movies that are

just universally adored critically as well as

You know too well in the box office and I think

we have potential of a few here But I feel like

that's when you have a strong year when and that's

when you've seen usually see like the Oscars

well represented when you have kind of a mixture

of both so I think we have a potential for some

films like maybe the Founder I don't know Silence

of course being Scorsese but I Think that's severely

lacking. I think overall 2016 has not been that

great. It's been spotty They've been good things

and if these last two months There's a lot of

potentially good movies if these could actually

be good It can make up in maybe make 2016 much

better than it is currently, but The other thing

that kind of went along with that is not only

the box office disappointments that we saw, especially

throughout the summer months, but there's been

a lot of films that a lot of people, including

us, talked about in our most anticipated films

of the year that did not turn out to be anything.

I haven't seen all of them, but just looking

at the critical acclaim and the box office numbers

and stuff like that, there's been at least a

half a dozen films that were highly touted at

the beginning of the year that have completely

flopped when it comes to the reception. interesting

to see that too. Hopefully that's not going to

hold true here through the end of November and

December because we're getting a huge amount

of potential and hopefully a few of them can

at least work out. Amanda, what's your 2016 looking

like so far and do you need, are you searching

for some films to fill out your top 10 of the

year or do you think you have a solid 10 regardless

of what happens the rest of the way? Honestly,

I haven't really sat down and looked at everything

that's come out this year so I can... choose

that. I've just been waiting for Fantastic Beasts

to fucking come out like this entire year. Like,

I just want to be blown the hell away by this

movie. And I want to be blown away by that and

Star Wars. And I think Moana, I don't have high

hopes for, honestly. Like, I know it'll do well.

That's Disney. But I want another story that

I just absolutely love. So I have some high hopes.

And I haven't really Put much stock in earlier

in the year The the couple things that I thought

I was gonna really enjoy Like civil war I think

that I was disappointed with so well In my Deadpool

to like very forgettable. Like it doesn't feel

like that was this year. Was that this year?

Yes, you were the only one that felt that way

So, yeah, I don't know. I just really want to

be fucking loud You bring up Moana and that's

kind of interesting too to just to look at the

world or the year of animation because There's

a lot of, you know, you have Finding Dory, you

have Moana, you have earlier in the year with

Secret Life of Pets and Zootopia. A lot of films

that got a lot of acclaim and then the one that

we saw that we really liked, Kubo and the Two

Strings. So it'll be interesting to see how that

kind of plays out. What is the best animated

film of the year or what's worthy of being in

that category? It's not Fucking Sausage Party.

We just watched that and... Ridiculously outrageously

graphic for no reason and stupid. I didn't like

it Yeah, can't recommend sausage party to anybody

Matt what is what's your you're looking like

and what are you hoping for this last little

bit? man, I I'm hoping that I see some movies

because I feel like I've only seen like six movies

this year I'm the worst movie podcast guy. I

think Yeah, I've got a lot of opinion. Yeah but

uh Go ahead. I don't know, man. I'm going to

see Star Wars. I goddamn hope I'm going to see

Doctor Strange. It's the only Marvel movie I

haven't seen in theaters, and that's bothering

me right now. And you've seen all the other comic

book films this year, correct? Yeah, I think.

No, wait. Yes? That's your task. We want the

breakdown, top to bottom, of comic book films

this year so you can get some more commentary

on Batman versus Superman before we're done with

this. Oh, it's the worst. No, it's not no suicide

was worse. I'm sorry Let the debate wage on as

for me. I am NOT a lot of people been ripping

on the year I don't think it's been awful. I

Could easily fill out my like five through ten

picks or like my four through ten picks without

a problem But I'm really like Dan said looking

for that that Wow pick that that automatic You

know one or two, you know top three films of

the year I don't know if I've seen any of those

yet So I've seen a bunch of good films, but I

have not seen any that just really stand above

all the rest So I'm hoping that we have a few

hidden gems in there or that there's some that

have just kind of slipped past my radar that

I've missed throughout the year that I can catch

up on here at the end because that's another

thing most of these films throughout the year

have now been available on DVD or on demand or

you know Netflix or whatever so it's good time

to catch up as well even though there's a lot

of films to see in the theater too. So you guys

will have to let us know what you are looking

forward to most for the rest of the year. November

and December films that are at the forefront

the ones that you're gonna run out to the theater

and see and which ones you're hoping will kind

of do well critically as well because awards

season is coming around and I have no idea what's

gonna be out there even Birth of a Nation which

Got a lot of praise and a lot of early award

buzz kind of fell a little bit when it came out

whether that's due to controversy with the director

or just a lot of people ripping on it when it

came out. It still scored very well though, so

we'll have to see what we have for the rest of

the year. You can let us know what you think

by going to the website geekcastradio .com, finding
