Question: What intrigued you the most from Comic-Con?

Geeks: Kevin @OptimusSolo Dan @MovieRevolt Amanda @HardCandiMandi Matt @FridleyCent

Starscream here, and I am the lord and master

of the Geekcast Radio Network. Don't tell Megatron.

Today on The Cinema Geeks. I give you my thoughts

on Batman the Killing Joke. We tell you why we

think Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond may be

worth seeing. And in our main attraction, we

break down all the news out of this year's Comic

Con. All that and more coming up with The Cinema

Geeks. Thank you for joining us on another episode

of The Cinema Geeks. I am one of your geeks,

Optimus Solo, and joining me today, as you heard

in the introduction, is movie revolve Dan. Hello.

Hey, how's it going? It's not going too bad over

here. And we also have a hard candy, Mandy. Hello.

YOLO. YOLO? Is that like a version of YOLO, but

different? It's version of YOLO in OLAW. So what

does it mean? It means you only live once, even

if they'll say hi. OK. And also, Fridley sent

hello, Matt. Hi. I thought it was you only say

hi once. Unless you're from Hawaii. Well, wait.

They only use one greeting for hello and goodbye.

So how do you know if you're saying hello or

goodbye? Oh, no. You just play tricks on people

all day. All right. So as we said in the introduction,

we're going to be giving you some thoughts on

some recent films that have been released. But

the main. Idea for today's episode is breaking

down all the news that came out of comic -con.

We are part of the geek cast radio network So

obviously we should be talking a little bit about

comic -con and we're gonna focus mostly on Film

news or film related things that came out of

that convention. So Obviously, there's gonna

be a lot of superhero talk in here But we're

gonna get some some news on some other films

as well that you may or may not be interested

in We'll have to wait and see but let's start

with the running the gauntlet on these superhero

film news trailers tidbits character things etc

etc so Dan we have a couple things that weren't

necessarily trailer related but pieces of news

that came out of the convention I was wondering

what your thoughts were on a variety of these

so we have the confirmation of Brie Larson as

Captain Marvel we have a confirmation that the

vulture is going to be the villain in Spider

-Man Homecoming. And then we got a little bit

of news as far as the villains in Black Panther

and the possibilities of who those characters

might be. Any of those three interest you or

what were your reactions on those? I think definitely

the one that stands out to me is probably Brie

Larson as Captain Marvel. I think it's a great

choice. She's been killing it lately, you know,

Oscar nominated, so. Marvel continues their track

record of getting pretty strong actors, and they've

been really spot -on when it comes to casting

for the most part, so that has me excited. And,

you know, Vulture being the villain makes sense.

I'm just happy it's not another Green Goblin,

so. What is the percentage right now, percentage

chance that the Vulture is being played by Michael

Keaton? Oh, geez. Percentage chance? I'll go

with the over -under being 55%. That he isn't.

That's not how Overrunner works. I'll say it's

55 % chance he's not going to, so more likely

than not he won't be. Okay. Matt, what one of

those three most intrigued you? Marvel, Spider

-Man, Colter, and what else? The Black Panther

somewhat of a reveal. They had an interview with

Lupita Nyong 'o and she gave away probably some

details that she shouldn't have. I don't know,

she even said in the interview that she's probably

going to get fired now. But it was basically

talking about who the villains might be in that

film as well as who might be helping out. Yeah,

she teams up with the CIA to fight some organizations

that we don't really know about yet. And it's

hinted that it might be the Andy Serkis character

that we've previously saw in Age of Ultron would

be one of them. Dude, if they brought in Kraw

into the MCU, I just want to know what they're

going to do with him. Are they going to make

him made out of sound? Because that dude's supposed

to be made out of sound. Just hard sound constructs.

I mean, I don't know. Could I say none of these

got me excited? Like, I don't want to be a hater.

Like, the Brie Larson one was a rumor that we

had practically confirmed. And knowing that we

have a Spider -Man villain but not being able

to see it yet means nothing to me. And though

I love the Black Panther and the comics, just

being like, yeah, there's two organizations that

are gonna come together and maybe Andy Serkis

will happen isn't enough to get my, you know,

mouth salivating, man. All right, so not a big

moment there for those three. Amanda, do you...

Yeah, I want to say that you were a hater before

this, so don't even worry about being a hater

now, because you're already a hater. But we're

okay with it. Not wrong to hate one bad movie.

You guys forever will be feuding on Batman v

Superman. Oh, to the day we die! Amanda, what

did you think of these three? Any of those excite

you? Uh, I don't really know enough about Captain

Marvel. to get excited about it yet, but I mean

it sounds pretty cool with Brie Larson on board

and you said it's like a Shazam thing where it's

like she turns into a dude? Is that what it is?

Or she's just a... She's just her own character,

like what are her powers? What am I supposed

to be getting into here? That'd be a very different

Marvel movie. There is a Captain Marvel, Shazam,

DC character. So Captain, like her powers, she's

almost like... I don't know, like a cosmic character,

super... Wonder Woman -ish, I guess you would

say. Flight, she's really strong. She's technically

like an alien. She took her powers from like,

there's another Captain Marvel that was before

her that was a male character who ends up getting

way too geeky. But yeah, it's, she kind of just

has your normal just really strength flight and

everything like that, you know. Concussion blast,

yeah. If you ever saw the 1990s X -Men cartoon,

Rogue, in that her powers are very similar to

that of Captain Marvel. That's where she got

most of those powers, so. I'm cool with it. Alright,

so I like the idea of Vulture, but like Matt

was saying, if we can't see more of it, it's

hard to kind of like... Fully weigh in on that.

I'm a fan of everything that seems to be happening

with Black Panther So I was somewhat intrigued

by some of the information But again a little

bit vague and I think Brie Larson like Dan was

saying there's a great casting another Kind of

great coup for the Marvel universe to to land

another high -profile Critically acclaimed actor

or actress so I like that Guardians of the Galaxy

obviously some of these People could see little

bits and pieces of stuff that got leaked out

of Cal and Con, but there's not necessarily anything

official out there yet. But I guess the biggest

thing for that bit of news was the reveal of

the... the individual that will be playing the

father of Star -Lord. Why the hell did they already

give this shit away? This was, like, some big

secret and I was like, yeah, there's gonna be

a reveal, it's gonna be awesome, and these nerds

have already sat here and talked about the stuff

that was already in the trailer for this, so,

I mean, it took away all the fun. So now you're

a big fan of knowing? No, I didn't want to know.

I mean, yeah, knowing that it's Kurt Russell.

Awesome. I'm down for that. But I wanted to be

more surprised. Like, oh, shit, it's fucking

Kurt Russell. Oh, shit. There's no surprises

with the internet. God. The internet takes that

away. Dan or Matt, what do you think about who

Kurt Russell, the character that he is going

to be playing in this? He's playing Eagle of

the Living Planet, which, similar to what Matt

was saying, it's hard to imagine, like, part

of that is, like, how are they going to, how

is that going to work? How are they going to

do that? I'm going to guess computer graphics

will be used in some way. I'm just going to throw

that out there. I don't know. It's different.

There are going a different route than the comics,

which his dad in the comics is something much

different, much more simple. But I'm excited,

Kurt Russell, and I'm really surprised they're

doing Eagle Living Planet. I never thought they

would go that route. But Guardians is a talking

raccoon, so I guess they feel like they can get

away with anything. Matt, what do you think about

Ego, the living planet, being in movie form?

Dude, that is such a deep pull from the Marvel

Universe. Like, I mean, I haven't read the cosmic

stuff the last five to ten years, like, too deeply.

But like, you know, he's a classic guy from,

like, the 80s or even earlier that didn't get

to see a lot of play. And so, like, the fact

that I feel like they can comfortably do that

just shows how powerful the Marvel Cinematic

Universe is now. Yeah. That is kind of crazy,

like Dan was saying, if you were making a list

of characters that you might think would show

up in some of these different films, I don't

think you'd be very high on people's lists, because

it just seems like something so hard to pull

off. But hey, the face of Mr. Russell in planet

form, I mean, that would be something to behold.

Get out of there, Kurt Russell! Also, about that

trailer, it looks like we will be getting baby

Groot. Oh, wait. What if Kurt Russell went through

the Stargate and then he became Ego? We're crossing

streams here. Just as they could buy it. Amanda,

what do you think about Baby Groot taking off

right where we left off in his form and following

that version of him throughout most of the film,

if not all of it? I think it's going to bring

a lot of heart and humor to the film, much like

his adult form did. I think it's going to be

super cute to see a little adorbs tree running

around trying to get involved in some ass kickery.

I'm excited for it. And then the other thing

was that there was going to be a few more members

of the Guardians, different characters that we've

seen before that maybe turn onto their side or

new characters that are introduced, as well as

a new look for Yondu where he's getting the,

what is it, the comic version where he has the

different, the fin on his head that's helping

out his powers. Any other reactions on the news

from Guardians of the Galaxy, Dan? I think it's,

you know, Baby Groot's great, I guess. I do wonder

if that will get a little old at the end. I don't

know, but I'm excited. Oh, they're going to build

that thing. I think they're just, James Gunn

is just going to, is going all in, which is awesome.

I think you can expect a full barrage of Baby

Groot paraphernalia toys, different things. I

mean, it's already out there now. I mean, they

have like the, so it's just, it's going to just

explode. Matt any other thoughts on any other

things related to volume 2 of Guardians of the

Galaxy? I don't know man, I'm just looking forward

to it. I loved that first one. Alright, so positive

reactions mostly for Guardians of the Galaxy

volume 2. Let's get into the ones that actually

had trailers though and get your guys' thoughts.

Let's start with the world of DC because it seems

to be a good topic to discuss with a few of the

panel members here. Let's start with the most...

Current one as far as what we're gonna get to

see the the soonest Suicide Squad obviously had

their final trailer We've seen a bunch of different

trailers from that film so far We've heard all

the different rumors throughout the year about

reshoots this that and the other We've seen most

of the other comic book films that have come

out in 2016 Amanda, where are you standing right

now with Suicide Squad? I still have a bunch

more to say. I didn't think going into watching

this trailer like What else am I going to have

to say about this? I've said it all, but oh my

god. Super freaking ready. Let me leave my notes

here. What did I write down? Oh. Okay, so the

visuals alone, I'm pretty sure are drawing me

in. And I'm convinced that the action is just

going to blow me the fuck away. And all their

witty banter and their teen dynamic, I think

I'm just going to be a total sucker for everything

in this movie. And I'm just ready for it to be

next week so I can see this. Which character

are you most looking forward to seeing? I'm definitely

really looking forward to Margot Robbie as Harley

Quinn. I think she's going to just knock it out

of the park. Alright. Dan, where are you sitting

right now with Suicide Squad? Overload as far

as the amount of trailers and talk and this that

and the other. Are you just ready for the movie

to come or anything you kind of gleamed out of

these last little things? I'm definitely ready

for the movie to come. I felt like the last trailer

kind of did it all for me. I didn't really need

it anymore. I thought, and I think that trailer

was probably the best one they've had so far,

the one with Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it, you

know, this one, it gave me a little bit more,

but I don't think it was as solid as that one.

So it didn't really, you know, make me more and

more interested. It just seemed like it was just

more additional footage, but I'm excited to see

it for sure. I'm kind of, I'm just glad it's

coming out in two weeks, so that's great. But

besides that, you know, it looks good. Jai Courtney

looks like he actually might be charismatic in

a movie, which seems crazy. But he's hideous.

He's a hideous man. Dan, I'll ask you the same

question. Is there a character you're looking

forward to seeing more than any other one? I'm

just actually kind of Will Smith in the sense

of I'm hoping like he kind of gets back to the

Will Smith I loved in the 90s. Like I feel like

this might be like, you know, the resurgence

of him as being a major action star again. So

that's when I'm... probably excited about. And

Jared Lettle's Joker, just to see how much record

he didn't get in the actual film. Yeah, because

that's definitely the character they've shown

us the least of so far through the different

trailers. So a little mystery behind that one.

Matt, has Batman v Superman soured you to any

other DC films coming out this year or is Suicide

Squad still of interest? I mean, so... I'm not

gonna let one movie ruin a whole universe for

me, right? Like, I'm not a terrible person. Just

an awful person. Sure. Wow. Hey, if I'm allowed

to have my opinion, she's allowed to have her

opinion. I'm not excited. Like, if you'd asked

me a couple months ago, I'd be like, yeah, I

really want to see it. Now I'm like, I need to

see it. But, I mean, it's not gonna be a Friday

night movie for me. I'm probably not - I mean,

I probably won't even see it that first weekend.

I'll probably end up seeing it a weekend later.

Um, but like, I mean, I'm interested. Will Smith

in this last trailer, um, looked good. And he

was probably the one I was the most worried about

other than Jared Leto. I mean, they have no idea

what they're doing with that guy. I think he

looks dope. Oh, I - I hate his look. What? I

think he's to - holy fits in the new like modern

resurgence that they got going on I think they

needed a darker look and he's definitely a psycho

but he's he's like a mix of like a psycho and

a gangster and I think that he's definitely what

we need in this film to bring it to like a modern

feel. I mean, like the Joker that we had with

Heath Ledger, I think he definitely fit for a

darker universe, but this one is more colorful

and definitely in line with the dark world, but

I think that his look is definitely what we would

see out of a Joker from this time. Sure. I think

you have a lot of assumptions though that like

we don't know how gangster is he. We don't know

how psychopathic he is. Dude, we know he has

a posse. We know he's driving like a Lambo or

something. So we already know that he's classy

as fuck. And he is gangster because he has face

tattoos and a grill. Well, I think he has a grill

because Batman punched his teeth out. He needs

that to eat food. I don't even know half the

words that have been thrown out in the last five

minutes. I'm so old. Matt, is there a character

you're looking forward to the most? Anyone who

doesn't say Harley Quinn is probably wrong because

it's like that's got to be one of the most interesting

characters. I want to see what they're doing

with the Joker because I am very worried. I want

to see Will Smith because he did like I think

he's one of the he's like the second biggest

change from the original comics so that's got

me you know a little tepid towards him but If

he does an amazing job acting, and they do a

good job characterizing the character beyond

just skin color, then thumbs up, great. You made

a change, and it wasn't a bad one. But I think

the character that has me the most, most interested

is June Moon, just because they've changed her

so much. All right. A different character heard

from. I think there's a good collection, and

I think the strength of this film may be that...

because of the variety of different characters

we have that there's going to be a little something

for everybody to look forward to. Everybody's

going to have maybe one character that they're

intrigued at more or... not necessarily can connect

with more, but it might have a more broad appeal

because of all the different types of personalities

and actors and characters that they're involving

in this. So we'll have to wait and see. I'm intrigued,

like Dan was saying, to see if Will Smith can

kind of recapture some of the magic in a halfway

decent film, hopefully, and not just be wasted

and going through the motions. So I'd like to

see that. And of course, Margot Robbie just seems

like she was born to play Harley Quinn, so interested

in that one as well. The other two major DC movies

that were receiving trailers were of course Justice

League and Wonder Woman. Dan, which one should

we start with? Ah, I guess it makes sense to

go with the one that's coming out soon, Wonder

Woman. Alright, so what did you think of the

Wonder Woman trailer? trailer and the setting,

the era that they're going to be tackling and

how it all is going to fit into the bigger universe.

I love the Wonder Woman trailer. It seems very

unlike any of the other DC films, it's very distinct

in its setting. Being a World War I movie in

general is very rare. We don't see many now a

World War I superhero film. And then with the

aspect of Wonder Woman's mythology and that part

of her character. I always find that interesting,

so I'm going to enjoy seeing that dichotomy of

those two worlds come together. I think Gail

Gadot is killing it as Wonder Woman in what we

saw in Batman v Superman. She was a bright spot

of that film and continues in this. I think it

looks great and I'm glad they're bringing back

the... at least in the trailer, the theme that

she had in Batman v Superman. I think it's one

of the best themes, actually, of any comic book

character, because we don't really have that

many. But yeah, I'm excited for it. I think of

all the comic book trailers that came out at

Comic -Con, that was my favorite. Matt, now most

of the... Comic book characters that we know

and love you know at the most can trace their

history back to World War two or that type of

time period obviously this one's going back a

little bit further into the world war one era

do you think that works for Wonder Woman and

also it you know based on what we saw from Batman

vs Superman it seems like she was doing things

back in this time period they obviously teased

that in that film and from what we can tell that

she almost became unnoticed or kind of blended

into the background then for decades upon decades

until she resurfaces in Batman versus Superman

so do you think that's the case and that's the

route that they're gonna go that this is kind

of an adventure or a story that's going to set

up why she possibly disappears for a long extended

period of time and kind of your thoughts on the

time period that they're gonna be covering? Yeah,

I mean like any Any similarity to the Marvel

Universe is going to be an obvious one that everyone's

gonna point out, but it's gonna be like Captain

America. Like, we're gonna go back in time, we're

gonna show this character's origin, and give

you exactly why they're not there. And if they

don't show us why she isn't everywhere by the

time we have this mass media, then they're failing

that movie and that character. Or giving us a

trilogy or something crazy, which is unnecessary

for that time period. Yeah, I mean like, it's

gonna be good and like having it in World War

1, but you know, just because there's less media

than there was in World War 2, even though it

was only 15 -20 years. So like, I mean, it can

make sense. Amanda, what do you think about the

Wonder Woman trailer and what were your reactions?

Um, in Batman vs Superman, I really didn't get

a lot from her. I didn't believe her strength.

I didn't believe her as Wonder Woman. I was intrigued

to see more of her character, but I just really

didn't believe it. But after seeing this trailer,

I'm definitely on board. I think Namaskarra looks

super cool, and I think the whole time period

looks great, and the Amazon women look pretty

badass. I think even Wonder Woman herself, her

look, her weapons, her fighting style, they're

all definitely gonna be super cool. I feel like

everything you say about Batman versus Superman

is contrary to everybody else. Like you didn't

like her at all in that movie. No, she was definitely

the best part of that movie No, she was like

scrawny and I really didn't care about her and

yeah, I was more intrigued by the the footage

that they found for like flash and cyborg and

all that then then her and she was in your face

for me when she showed up the movie got uh that's

because you're a dude and she's a chick and everybody

no i had nothing to do with that it just was

the way that the kid yeah right i don't believe

that for a second all right nothing to do with

male female but uh we'll have to just agree to

disagree on that she was flat super flat in the

whole thing okay i disagree um what what about

her was that I mean, we discussed it when we

talked about Batman vs Superman, but I just thought

the energy of the whole film and the pacing got

much better once her character comes onto the

scene. I mean, maybe for Neanderthals, but for

the rest of us with brains I don't think it quite

works that way. The Justice League, which kind

of goes hand in hand with that because we're

going to get more Wonder Woman in that, as well

as a heavy dose of, of course, Ben Affleck's

Batman, and a lot of people are wanting to see

more of that, so I think that's intriguing. As

well as, obviously, the other characters, some

Aquaman, some Flash, and Cyborg. Dan, what did

you think of the Justice League trailer? Were

you as excited for that one as you were for Wonder

Woman? I was super underwhelmed with the Justice

League trailer. Nearly top to bottom. It just

felt really awkward to me. It felt like a...

Do you see your Warner Brothers trying to respond

to all the criticism of Batman v Superman? It's

like, okay, we'll try to be jokey and it didn't

work I don't been I like Ben effect a lot and

Batman v Superman but in the clips than this

it just Something seemed off to me like his the

way he was trying to joke it just it seemed out

of character and It just felt forced at times.

This is Justice League. This should feel like

it's important, but it didn't have that. I did

like the Aquaman stuff. There's some cool imagery

with him. I thought Cyborg looked embarrassingly

bad. I know it's super early, so that'll probably

look better when the film's actually released.

I did like Ezra Miller as Flash a little bit.

We did get up him. But overall, just being the

first coming together of Justice League. it just

was nothing about it really stood out to me it

just seemed uh and it just seemed like unfinished

it like rushed you know there wasn't really anything

there that that really stood out at all matt

agree or disagree um I don't think I was as underwhelmed

as he was. I do think Cyborg looked so bad. He

looked like what I could go down to the dollar

store Halloween section and just get a bunch

of latex parts and blaster them on myself. And

I agree that Batman was like, no dude, we need

to start murdering everyone, including the aliens,

especially the aliens. and build a wall around

the planet. And so him going around joking is

awkward, but if they have an explanation for

how he goes from super over -the -top murder

man to being jokey billionaire playboy again,

I'm more interested in seeing this than what

could have come out of Batman v Superman. They're

making it look a little bit more, he's becoming

their Tony Stark. And I hate, again, you're gonna

have to draw any parallel you can, and I hate

that it might just be a clone of the Marvel U,

yeah, the Marvel U, but rather than clone something

that's working, then have another failed attempt

at something else. Alright, Amanda, where do

you sit on Justice League? Excited, more excited

than these guys or not? Yeah, I think I'm on

an island of excitement over this, and everybody

else is just... Is it because Geek and the More

had his shirt off? That only added to my excitement.

But yeah, this is everything that I wanted after

seeing Batman vs Superman. This is everything

that I was excited for. Cyborg does look just

jank as fuck right now. Hopefully after some

more production. He'll, his technology will get

a little bit better, but I think it's definitely

gonna be super epic. I think the team is gonna

be awesome. I do love the Batman that we're getting

right now. I did like some of his humor coming

back in. I mean, he's dealing with - Which Batman

do you like, the one from Batman or Superman

or the one we saw from this trailer? I like,

okay, so it's better if I get Batman, okay? He

was going through a lot of bullshit. Up until

now. Now he's got a new path to go on. He's got

new people around him. He's gotta be somebody

who's likable to be on a team. You can't be the

one asshole that nobody fuckin' likes on the

team and then expect everybody to, like, rally

with you. So he's gotta show some fuckin' personality

here or nobody's gonna wanna side with him. Except

for Ezra Miller, who is just like, I want friends.

I think that each one of these characters is

going to be super awesome to see, and it's going

to be really great to see them coming together.

I've always liked the Justice League. I think

the new Aquaman is the coolest thing I've ever

fucking seen in my life. And watch out, Kevin,

because I'm going to marry Aquaman now. Not Jason

Momoa, just Aquaman. But yeah, I'm ready. I'm

ready for it, and I feel like it's still a long

way away. I'm intrigued, too, by... aqua Drago

Actually would probably rather see that movie

But I thought he looked you know he looked legit

they didn't give us a lot I mean he doesn't obviously

do much speaking or you know I have any of that

stuff going on But I did think it was some intriguing

visuals, but yeah the visuals for cyborg are

terrible And I just don't quite get where they're

going with all the characters yet I mean we'll

have to wait and see but I have to see how Like

Matt was saying, how Batman goes from one extreme

to the other, and uh, I just don't - I don't

want him just to be doing - He's not in an extreme

yet. You don't know that. Just because he says

a couple funny fucking things doesn't mean he's

like, happy fucking college time Batman, joking

with the frat guys. Just because Joker has a

tattoo doesn't mean he's a gangster. Yeah, he

does. He's got face tats. This is different.

It's not an arm tat, it's a face tattoo. We're

going only off of trailers and so we can only

do what we can only do and that Batman was super

jokey He probably has po buddies nerf it too

Nobody's perfect, but with the first letter because

you're not perfect It's a tattoo people get Yeah,

kind of. Oh man, we're going down a different

path here. Tattoo talk from the Cinema Geeks.

But the other DC property, of course, that received

a trailer was a little bit of a different type

of film, and that would be the Lego Batman film.

Matt, did you see the trailer for that? And if

so, what were your thoughts on Lego Batman? I

did. I don't know. It's not for me. Like, it's...

I mean, it'd be funny if I caught it on a Saturday

on TV, I'd probably hang out and watch it. I'm

definitely probably not gonna spend Monday on

it, but it's got a lot of humor. Although, I

don't know, man. It looks, it's interesting.

It's an interesting concept. The Lego spinoff

movies and shows are an interesting concept to

me. Amanda, what do you think? Yeah, I like it.

Freakin' Wiz Khalifa, black and yellow play,

juices you up, definitely for it. I think that

it's super cute, and I think it's gonna have

some adult stuff in there, and I'm still gonna

like it. Little kids are gonna like it. I think

that the animation's super awesome, and all the

characters themselves are over the top and amazing,

so I'm ready too. And this is an instance where

we can see multiple versions of Batman. He can

do all of them. He can do Jack Nicholson, or

the Dark Knight version, or Ben Affleck, or Adam

West. So we don't have to worry about him staying

in character. He can just bounce all over the

place. So I think that's something to look forward

to. What do you think about Robin and Lego Batman,

Dan? Well, I like the little joke they had of

him taking his pants off, of course. I do like

the fact that it's almost like a hybrid of every

Robin ever in a way or just like its own character,

but It looks fun. I mean it looks you know it

looks enjoyable I think Will Arnett like is killing

it as this kind of comedic Batman and it looks

like it'll be a good time I'm interested in like

How you're gonna make an entire movie out of

that, but then they also made Lego movie so that

ended up working out okay, but uh for sure yeah

I think everybody's question is if they're going

to be able to capture the same magic that the

LEGO movie did. That's the hard part and I think

it's going to be weird because it's like, how

do you make a movie out of that, make sense?

Are you going to have a Joker plot? That's my

question. I think the humor is just going to

work, but is it going to work nearly as well

as the story of the LEGO movie? That's kind of

a high bar to set for something. That's kind

of my question, too. Is it going to be a movie

on its own, or is it just going to feel like

a film version of an episode of whatever, Robot

Chicken, or one of those types of shows that

just spoof stuff? I would watch a whole movie

of Robot Chicken. Well, I mean, I'm not saying

people won't get enjoyment out of it, but that's

my question. Is it going to be a movie movie,

or is it just going to be a spoof, fun, humor,

like... episode of one of those... So what about

the South Park? Bigger, longer, uncut? It's basically

the longer episode, and it works really... Yeah,

there's a lot more to that, though. There's so

many more thematic things going on in that film.

I never felt like it was just... I mean, all

the episodes of South Park are like that. I don't

think there's a lot of... I haven't seen a ton

of Robot Chicken, but I don't feel like there's

a lot of, like, big themes and... It's like a

culture stuff. Yeah, but South Park's not that.

South Park's making commentary on it. And you

don't think Robot Chicken? I haven't seen enough

Robot Chicken. Maybe I'm getting a wrong impression

of it. I just felt like it's more like Family

Guy or something where it's just like, hey, here's

a character that you know from 10 years ago,

and here's crazy stuff that this group of whatever

pop culture people are doing. Has anybody seen

Robot Chicken? Help me out. I've seen like every

episode. OK. Is it making social commentary like

South Park does? Sometimes, yeah. OK. Like I

think I don't think your assessments too far

off that uh, it could be a problem that this

would just be Essentially the robot chicken Star

Wars or the Family Guy Star Wars special, but

with Batman um But you can I mean you can always

slide extra stuff into it I mean that is that's

probably my biggest concern is that it's going

to be it will one of the two concerns is gonna

be that one all it is is just a bunch of parody

and ripoff jokes because you know, I don't need

an animated version of scary movie and disaster

movie that's just Batman movie but and also I'm

a little worried that it's aimed at too young

of an age for us on this call necessarily but

like if they do it well and clearly that Robin

joke was definitely more adult than the intended

audience. So like they could, I mean, Robot Chicken

was fun and I watched every episode, like I said.

So like if they do it well, it could be great.

And the reason I brought up Robot Chicken is

I believe, if I remember reading right, that

people that were in charge of some writing on

Robot Chicken or something are involved in this

film. So that's kind of why I brought that up.

Going on to some of the, I know this is a film

podcast, but we're going to real quick touch

on a little bit of the TV stuff because... most

of us are fans of that or watch that. Dan, I

know you've seen most of the Marvel Netflix series,

etc. So we had a number of different news things

coming out of Comic -Con related to those items

as well. So we had rumors about Iron Fist, we

had a sneak peek look at Legion, the Defenders,

Luke Cage, and that Ghost Rider would be appearing

on the next season of Agents of S .H .I .E .L

.D. Did any of those things intrigue you as far

as the rumors coming out about... TV series that

are somewhat related to the comic book world?

Ghost Rider to a certain extent, but I have not

really watched Agents of S .H .I .E .L .D. and

I don't think it has me excited enough to really

check it out and I don't know how well Ghost

Rider is gonna work on like a basic TV series

like Agents of S .H .I .E .L .D. I mean, I love

the Luke Cage stuff that has me super excited.

The Iron Fist stuff is, there wasn't really much

there. Right. So it was hard to go off, but I'm

excited. I think Luke Cage probably was out of

the... out of them all the most. I love what

they're doing. I have some hesitations here and

there, but overall, I think if they're going

to keep the consistency they've had with the

other shows, so I'm happy with that. Amanda,

what about you? What are your thoughts on any

of those? Is any of it enough to make you tune

into it, whatever one show that you're talking

about there? I know we haven't watched Agents

of S .H .I .E .L .D. Ghost Rider's not enough

for me to go back and start watching from the

beginning, but any of these other ones intrigue

you enough to check them out? I think that if

anything's going to get me to watch Agents of

Shield, it's probably going to be a flaming skull

guy on a motorcycle. As far as Iron Fist, I don't

really know anything about that, but the concept

and what I did see from those stills looked pretty

legit and I can dig it. Anything about Legion

or the Defenders or Luke Cage? Legion I was a

little bit leery of, but it being FX... They

tend to take it there. I mean, they don't tone

it down too much. I mean, have you guys seen

Nip Tuck? That show is crazy. So I can see them

being able to take it a little farther than I

thought it was going to be a little more PG down.

But I like the effects. I like the concept. I

think it might get a little weird. But I would

definitely be on board for anything mutant. All

right. Matt, any thoughts on any of those TV

series, Netflix series, et cetera? I think Legion

is a very interesting idea. I have no idea what

they're doing there. And I'm not familiar enough

with the other mutants of the Marvel universe.

Like anything that wasn't in an X team for a

long time I don't know anything about. But I

don't think I'll ever watch it because I don't

watch television nearly enough. Like I've been

halfway into the first season of everything except

for Daredevil. I did half of Agents, half of

Jessica Jones, half of Carter. And I mean, they're

all good. It's just it's so much time. Like I

want to see the defenders. It's a great team.

It's an interesting spin. But I mean, I'm going

to have to watch two seasons of Daredevil. I'm

going to have to watch all of Iron Fist, all

of Power Man, Luke Cage, all of Jessica Jones.

And if they're going to include Ghost Rider,

I'm going to watch four seasons of the Shield.

It's it's. way too much to catch up on. Like,

I can do one or two movies a week. I cannot do,

you know, a hundred hours of television just

to watch this one show. Yeah, it can definitely

be an intimidating adventure if you're trying

to tackle all that. I still need to catch up

with the second season of Daredevil, so I'm a

little behind. But I did like Jessica Jones,

I did like the first season of Daredevil, and

I'm definitely interested in Luke Cage. We got

about, before we take a break, we got about a

half dozen non... comic book related or non -superhero

film related news to go over so I want to get

your guys take on this. First of all let's start

with the one that I think has about the least

amount of potential and that would be King Arthur

by Guy Ritchie. Dan he was able to capture some

magic and rejuvenate in a way I guess one literary

character in Sherlock Holmes. Is he going to

be able to do the same with King Arthur or is

this just going to be bad? It's a good question

to ask. I don't know. I feel like Guy Ritchie

is kind of running out of steam. I'm a huge Guy

Ritchie fan. I love Snash and Lockstock, Two

Smoking Barrels, and I like the... You know,

the Sherlock Holmes film is well enough as well,

but I don't know. King Arthur? I just... Don't

really need one. I guess I don't know like I

just did I have no interest and it just doesn't

seem like it's something that needs to happen

but I Just doesn't look like anything. That's

really all that appealing to be honest. I mean

it has interesting cast It's off your alley.

Is this something that appeals to you? Yes, sir.

It does I love Guy Ritchie Lincoln's had all

his you know snatching and the I Think the real

rock -and -roller was on him, too I love a lot

of his stuff and especially the Sherlock Holmes

movies and I think that that was a brand new

style for him like you can look at that and and

just know that that's a Guy Ritchie movie and

this definitely falls in line with that there's

you know the study cam when they're running and

and all that good stuff but I think that this

this King Arthur story looks super Cool, like

even when he's pulling the sword out of the stone,

it's not just all these other times we've seen

it, he pulls it out, he's like, oh, I know I

have this, the sword came out of the stone. There's

like actually things going on while he's pulling

it out. Like there's like a disturbance. And

I think that looked really cool. I think the

tone of it looked super awesome. It's got some

pretty, pretty big players here too. Is it Charlie

Hunnam? And Jude Law. I think that the cast can

really do some good stuff with this, and the

visuals that I've seen so far, I think that along

with the tone, I think that I would enjoy it.

My fear is that there's been so many films, not

necessarily just King Arthur films, but so many

films kind of of that same type of setting or

period that just have such terrible writing that

I'm hoping that this isn't one of them, but I'm

not gonna... Hold my breath, yeah, because I've

just been burned too many times on these types

of phones. But this guy Richie, he doesn't ever

have, I don't think his writing is ever lacking.

Hopefully that's, hopefully he's able to capture.

Even when you couldn't understand Brad Pitt in

Snatch, you were still like, fuck yes, whatever

this guy's saying, yes. You like bags? Let's

switch to another one that I was not expecting

to actually enjoy at all But I'm somewhat intrigued

now that I've seen the trailer and that's Kong

Skull Island with a pretty impressive cast here

an ensemble that Makes you wonder and I've heard

the comparison on a couple other Podcasts or

different people talking about the trailer for

this and the question that was being posed kind

of in a roundabout way is is Kong Skull Island

gonna be more resembling Predator or more resembling

Alien versus Predator in a way. So a lot of people

are thinking it's just more of like this schlocky

like should just be like a direct -to -video

type film and then some people are saying that

you know based on the trailer that it looks to

be something that could be as good as something

like Predator where you have these people, you

know, somewhat trapped on this island and it's

a star -studded cast and kind of the mystery

and the intrigue of what's going on. Matt, start

with you. Are you excited at all about Kong Skull

Island and what do you think is going to happen

with that? I'm not even half as excited about

Kong as I am about fucking that King Arthur movie.

That looked way better. Oh yeah? Like... You're

excited about King Arthur too, so you and Amanda

on page on point with that one. Yeah. Like I

well one we do not get enough medieval or fantasy

movies like just as a whole And then the fact

that a good 70 % of them are terrible Means that

we just need to crank out more so that you know

we get that 30 % every once in a while Like I

don't know if it does look very very intense

and very Thriller edge of your seat I mean even

the trailer makes me a little uneasy and I watch

it on my phone And the cast does look great.

I'm curious to see what all crazy manner of beasts

they do. Is this going to be half of an origin

for Godzilla or some of the Godzilla monsters?

There's plans to cross them over, right? It could

be great. It could also be, like he said, schlocky

and terrible. I'm going to watch the next trailer

because this one hasn't sold me necessarily,

but it's piqued my interest without getting me

excited. Right. Dan, for people that were disappointed

or the negative reactions that some people had

to Godzilla, do you think Kong Skull Island is

going to be enough to bring them back into the

fold, or what was your opinion on this trailer?

I think well the benefit of this is that I think

that this cast at least seems a little bit more

well -rounded I thought you know the cast for

Godzilla had potential but a lot of its best

stars kind of got left in the wayside and we're

following Aaron Terrell Johnson for way too long

and he was a void of charisma. Where this you

know you have Tom Hiddleston which I think obviously

is a huge step up so I think that's a huge benefit

so even if we don't see a lot of King Kong and

he's a peripheral character for a great deal

of it then uh you know that that'll be a benefit

i guess i didn't really even see the predator

vibe like that didn't come to my mind i i don't

know i enjoyed it i think it looks more like

Guess in a way it felt more like Lost World or

Jurassic Park ish to me not to that extent But

just seeing them come to this island with all

these creatures. I actually kind of liked the

Peter Jackson King Kong I think maybe it was

a little over a little over a long But I thought

some of like the t -rex fight scene and that

was the King Kong was fun With this I'm I'm interested

like or like there's been so many King Kong movies

Like where much further can you go besides making

him really big I guess so I I I'm hopeful, I

think, but I was also hugely hopeful with Godzilla

and that was kind of a let down, so I don't know.

I guess my thought is at least this has a stronger

cast, so that should hopefully make it better,

but you never know. I had already written this

one off just based on Godzilla. I wanted nothing

more to do with the Universal Monster Party that

was going to be going on, but this... Trailer

does have me intrigued. I would be lying if I

said it didn't Amanda Kong Skull Island in or

out I am all in definitely. Um, I wasn't too

sure just hearing about it I'm like, yeah, whatever

cool another Kong movie, but seeing the trailer

definitely shows me this is gonna be an epic

and also You know, coming back to the fact that

there's a ton of A -listers in this. Brie Larson,

Tom Hiddleston, fucking Sam Jackson again in

the fucking jungle. I definitely, I think it

more had a vibe along Tarzan that we saw earlier

this year. Not just because it's Sam Jackson

and, you know, a big ol' monkey. It just, it

had that look, that feel. And I think that it's

gonna be a very tense and intense movie. I didn't

get the Predator vibe either, but I think that

it's going to be a... I think what they were

getting at is a monster, like a scary foe that

you're dealing with in an enclosed setting. Is

it going to be something that resonates like

Predator did? Not is it going to be a movie like

Predator necessarily, but is it going to be something

that does receive good reaction to, or is it

going to be something like we see with all the

different sequels to those types of films, where

it's just like, yeah, why did we do this? Going

off of the last few that we had, I'll just get

to kind of throw them all out there and see what

anybody has to say about any of them. But we

had a few different things from different arenas

here. trailer for a Blair Witch sequel. I mean,

I know you're a big horror fan. You're also a

big fan of the Harry Potter world. And we got,

you know, a new thing for Fantastic Beasts and

where to find them. And then for the retro nostalgic

lovers, we both got a trailer for a Legends of

the Hidden Temple film, as well as some still

shots and some information about a reboot of

the DuckTales cartoon series that's coming out.

Amanda, let's start with you. Any of those things

intrigue you, or what was your take on those?

That's okay. So, Hidden Temple, I was pretty

excited for. I loved the show growing up, watched

it faithfully, and wanted to be on that fucking

thing. But, um, Ol' Mac was pretty legit. I was

kind of scared of him. But, uh, this movie looks

bonk as fuck. Like, I think it definitely looks

like some Nickelodeon movie that is just not...

I don't know. I... I couldn't get behind it.

It looked too cheesy, and everything was too

forced, and it just did not look good. I think

eventually we're gonna have to put out a Cinema

Geeks dictionary for me. Why? That just tells

me what all these words mean that are being thrown

about. Maybe you should just let your life out

in the public. Bunk? Bunk? Alright. Maybe you

should just listen to your co -host and get to

know us, Kevin. I guess. I gotta look up these

things and be more in with the crew here. Amanda,

what about the other films? Any thoughts on Fantastic

Beasts or Blair Witch? Oh, you want me to get

into those, too? Cause I got a lot to say about

those. Go for it. Let's hear it all. Blair Witch,

I didn't know if it needed a fucking sequel.

And it's coming a little late. But, um, it could

be legit, though. It'd also be super rerated.

I'm not really so sure on this one yet, but I

was scared as shit by the first one. I don't

know if I can, you know, this found footage thing

has been done to death, but I think if you like

the first one, this one, you know, might take

you back to that same place, you know, middle

school, whatever the fuck age you were when you

saw this. And, uh, as far as, um, Fantastic Beasts?

Holy shit. I'm so beyond ready to just jump back

into the wizarding world. There's no holding

back from this movie. I'm going to be waiting

in line, definitely. And now we get to see some

more creatures. And they look super, super cool.

And I think that the scenery and all the displays

of magic are really epic already just in the

trailer. Eddie Redmayne seems to bring a quirky

wit. So yeah, I'm ready. I'm ready. All right,

so a big fan of some of those titles that are

being bantied about. Dan, any reactions to any

of that last group? Well, I've actually never

seen Bloodrich, the original. It's oddly enough,

so I can't really. I like the Fantastic Beasts

trailer. I'm curious about that, how that's going

to work. I do feel like we're not getting enough

of the Eddie Redmayne character, though, so far.

I don't. I feel like we've had two or three trailers

and still really don't understand who he is,

but I guess that's what the movie says. They've

almost shown just as much Colin Farrell as they

have Eddie Redmayne so far. Yeah. I think Eddie

Redmayne's character is more of a meeker character.

Yeah. But I don't know. It looks... But yeah,

so I'm excited for that. I think there's a lot

of potential. Like Amanda said, I'm excited to

get back to the world of Harry Potter, especially

with it being, like, what is it, like, early

50s or so? Something like that. So, should be

fun. Right. Matt? You're all on board for DuckTales

and Legends of the Hidden Temple? Which ones

did Amanda not like? Because those are... No.

No. Like, I'm right there with her. Hey Amanda,

what team were you on, Legends of the Hidden

Temple? Oh man, I don't even... The Blue Iguanas

or something. Blue Barracudas? Don't even fuck

with me. The problem is that you don't have a

physical set for your video games? so it's hard

they got the same host even he did they got the

host from legends of hidden temple to be in this

movie he looks old as shit but he's the same

guy well he's not messed out so we're doing okay

but he was messed out i don't know i'm just saying

he could have been his show went tanked under

um like i think i think uh everything amanda

said was on point um it's definitely not aimed

at us and it's definitely not aimed at us. Like,

where's the Batman one where it's like, oh, that's

got some stuff in it. This is one of those ones

where it's like, it's tapping into 90s nostalgia,

but the only people that are gonna be nostalgic

about it and watching it are people with little

kids. It just seems weird, though, because it's

like, it's totally not for the audience that

it totally is for. Yeah, that. That's totally,

but maybe it's just a backdoor pilot to bring

the TV show back. I mean, and like, if they did

that, I'd watch it. Like, I'm assuming that's

not gonna be in theaters, right? That's like

a TV movie? I can't, man. It's gotta be straight

to Nickelodeon or Disney or whatever it was.

This is the straight to TV movie. The Rugrats

movie had better production on it than it did.

Well, the Rugrats movie was in theaters. Exactly.

The live action Rugrats movie? Cause that'd be

amazing. They did do the all grown up. Look who's

talking now. I don't have the time to watch four

seasons of agents of shield but if they brought

back legends of the hidden temple or they brought

back guts or any of those other 90s like kid

aimed Not reality show, game shows. I'd catch

one every now and then. I don't have to follow

up, I don't have to watch every episode. I'd

watch it every once in a while. So yeah, I'm

all for it. Although again, that movie doesn't

look like it's aimed at the people that will

remember it. Geez, what else? Blair Witch, zero

interest because it's a horror movie only, but

I was listening to another podcast with a horror

aficionado, a guy who actually, he's a novelist,

he writes horror books, and he posts a website

where he reviews horror movies, and he watches

something like 400 movies a year, and he said...

So this is my news source, that it's supposed

to be essentially a Blair Witch 2, but not Blair

Witch 2, which was like a movie movie. This is

supposed to like rewrite it, like it's like a

half reboot, half sequel to the first one, which

if fans hated the way they took it away from

the found footage after the first one, might

be a great appeal to the old fan base, and that's

a good idea from a logical standpoint. Right.

I don't even remember watching Blair Witch 2.

I've seen more of Blair Witch 2 than any other

Blair Witch anything else. I know I've seen it,

but I don't remember. I didn't even know there

was a second one. Yeah, it's not found footage,

and I don't think it was very popular. Is there

anything else to talk about? DuckTales looks

interesting, but all we have is a couple of stills

to go by. I'm not interested in Harry Potter

movies, although I might pick up the books to

read them. I'm intrigued by DuckTales because

I can't believe that hasn't been redone yet,

so... But Matt, you shouldn't be deterred by

Fantastic Beasts because it's not from a Harry

Potter book, so you can't be shitty that it's

not the source material. Like, exactly like that.

It's something different, and it's just a wizarding

world. There's not even any Harry Potter in it,

so you should just go see it, because it's not

gonna be disappointment, it's not from the book,

it's not... But I haven't seen the other like

seven movies I don't know that university board

What is this like November Like, I mean, I might

see it. She's got three months still to wear

on you. Yeah, no, dude. Like, as cynical as I

am and as negative as I am about a lot of things,

like, I just want to enjoy myself with the movies.

Like, and that's all I want to do is just critique

so that people become better. I don't want to

shit on anyone or have anyone not make their

movie they want to see, but like... Also want

to be excited and like maybe I need to watch

the trailers because I didn't watch this one

to be honest I was like there's so many trailers.

I'm gonna skip over that one And maybe I'll get

excited and then I'll go see it She's got three

months to wear on you. She's gonna try to bring

you on to her camp on to her side There's Colin

Farrell Eddie Redmayne Sean Boyd and magic the

problem is is that like Like, I'm the worst at,

uh, seeing movies, clearly. And so it's like,

you say Eddie Redmayne, and I go, yeah, no, I

mean, I saw Jupiter Ascending. Oh, god. Sorry.

Like, I don't know if there are any other Eddie

Redmayne movies that I've seen, like... The Danish

Girl? Never even heard of that. You with Stephen

Hawking? I haven't seen, I don't watch biopics

often. Just, just keep your, uh, impression from

Jupiter Ascending, that'll be it. Amen that movie

that movie was a was a great trilogy smashed

into a terrible That was what that movie was

That was a mess. All right. Well, we're gonna

take a quick break when we come back We're gonna

said, we're going to give you some quick thoughts

on some things that we've seen recently. Dan,

I know you've seen some 2016 films here in the

last little bit. Is there one that you would

like to share? Sure. I can touch upon the Killing

Joke that recently came out. I know it came out

in theaters too, but I just saw it on digital

home media. For those that don't know, it's based

upon the iconic graphic novel, or actually not

graphic novel. It was really a single issue story.

And it's one of the DC animated Directed DVD

films have done a bunch of these before and this

this one is a little bit different in the sense

of They try to like With the the comics that

they're adapting, you know of the killing joke

with it being one issue They had to try to think

padded out a little bit So what they ended up

doing with this is they have this additional

story this almost prologue or um yeah I guess

prologue I don't know but an additional story

before they even get to the killing joke that

centers on the back girl and not to get anything

away about something majorly happens to the character

Barbara Gordon back girl in the killing joke

and I think the intention was to try to you know

make her more of a character within that story

by adding this additional piece and the issue

is like they these two aspects of the film are

so separate it doesn't really work that well.

What you end up having is almost like a de facto

anthology film where you have one movie and then

another one that very loosely tied to one another.

They don't even really refer to each other all

that much and there's a lot of talk regarding

what it does with Batgirl and Batman's relationship.

I didn't really mind that issue. My issue was

more so that it Didn't really affect anything

moving forward because once we get into the killing

joke story it legitimately is almost panel by

panel word by word Taking that and just putting

it in a DVD movie and you know it worked well

Mark Hamill Kevin Connery both come back and

they do their job that you expect them to do

But I think it could have been more they could

have I think they were so dedicated or so Intent

on making sure it like you're they're sticking

to the source material too much that When they

what they were trying to do before and it's forgotten

and then there's this like this ending epilogue

Which doesn't really work as well. You're you

know, they want to have this progression of the

character of Barbara Gordon where you see you're

trying to overcome Challenges and becomes a realization

of who she is and it doesn't really work as well

like it feels very forced and unearned and really

ill -defined, but the killing joke portion of

it is good. It's fine, it works, the animation's

pretty solid. There are legitimate times where

they just take a panel and they put it on the

screen and I thought that was okay. Sometimes

I felt it was a little bit too forced, maybe

a little bit too much of pandering, but it was

enjoyable. I think it could have been better

and it could have been one of their best movies

where it's just one of their... You know, it's

one of the good ones, but I wouldn't put it up

there with, I think, like Red Hood is one of

the best ones. Dark Knight Returns, some of the

Justice League films, Flashpoint Paradox, but,

you know, if you're a Batman fan and looking

for something different, I think it's something

to check out, but somewhat disappointing compared

to what I could... I haven't checked what it's

scoring on any of the Metacritic or IMDB or Rotten

Tomatoes, whatever, but I swear I have not heard

a single positive... Facebook message or tweet

about this film whatsoever. I think some big

reason is due to something that happens in the

movie, which I won't give away. I'm not sure,

but I think it's over. I saw some positive reviews.

I think it's from what I saw was that it was

getting an okay reception, but somewhat disappointing.

I know it did really well in theaters. It made

like four million dollars. for one day and limited

release. So that's pretty impressive. Wow. So,

you know, it was one of the Fathom events, things

where they just do it for one night and it's

also the first one that was rated R. And I'm

actually kind of glad they didn't push that that

much. Like in a way, I don't even know if it

needed to be rated R. I guess it did for certain

things that happened, but I would think like

some of the, like a flashpoint paradox I felt

was much. more graphic and much more deserving

of the R rating than this. Not that that's a

bad thing, I think it's a good thing that they

didn't then become R rated and up the violence

to an Nth degree just because they could or make

it overly sexualized just because they could.

I think they were reserved with it, which was

the better choice. What score out of 10 would

you give The Killing Job? That's a good question.

Probably 6 out of 10. Okay. Matt, you have now

seen another film since we did our half -year

look back. Why don't you give us your thoughts

on Ghostbusters? And it was one of the most polarizing

films to be talked about, heading up to its release,

obviously, before anybody had seen anything.

Which, take that for what it's worth. But once

you actually saw it, what was your reaction?

And kind of give us a breakdown. Um, all right,

yeah. It's, like, still polarizing. But I think

it's all for the same reasons as before. People

be mad, and I don't even know why. I'm cynical,

right? We can tell that when I go into something,

especially something that has a source material,

I'm looking at it from the point of view of how

are they ruining the thing I love, and don't

get me wrong, I was holding my breath. I didn't

want a reboot of Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters 3.

Sure. I mean, it's been too long, but go for

it. But a reboot? Mmm, not a good idea. But coming

out of it, like, I thoroughly enjoyed that movie.

Like, I loved it. I thought almost everything

was on point. Sure. Chris Hemsworth was a little

over the top, but I mean, they made him a character

and they stuck with that character. And he, they,

I mean, it was well written. Like you can't argue

that it was well written, whether you don't like

the jokes that they fell flat, whatever. Um,

they were consistent, which is hard to do in

a movie somehow. Um, like, and, uh, like I was

there, I was down. It was great. Um, and the

more I think about it, the more I love it. Um,

and I'm not a hundred percent sure it's a reboot.

Yeah, there's definitely some theories out there.

They left more than enough clues to say it could

definitely be a sequel, like a hidden sequel,

and I'm more than willing to talk about that

in a place if someone wants to. Nice. I think

my takeaway from this is the people that were

bored by this film or the people that said it

wasn't fun or enjoyable or entertaining, I think

you've lost the ability to have fun. Like, I

don't understand that. I could understand maybe

not going for, you know, maybe you're not fans

of those actresses or, you know, et cetera, or

the fact that they're just doing it in general,

but you gotta be able to shut your critical thinking

off. Just go and watch a film and enjoy it for

what it was. And I thought it was a lot of fun.

Amanda, you were positive about the film going

into it. You were excited about it. What was

your takeaway from seeing it? It definitely lived

up to everything that I wanted to be. I was a

little scared, just based on everybody shitting

on it, and I'm like, oh my gosh, if this movie

does flop, it's gonna, you know, really, really

hurt, you know, women reboots, too, and a lot

of things. It could definitely do a lot of damage

if it did flop, and I think that... Everything

that it was trying to live up to it did and I

think it surpassed some expectations Yeah, definitely

crimson Chris Hemsworth was over the top, but

I don't think it it wasn't about him You know

what I mean? It was about the team and I loved

the team. I loved each individual on the team

I loved everything that each one of them brought

Holtzman stole the show. She was amazing. I want

to be her fucking best friend. I want to go blow

stuff up with her and like invent things and

eat Pringles in the wrong times, but I was really

really satisfied with this. I think all the jokes

worked for me. I loved all the cameos. I was

definitely enthralled with this movie. I think

it was a good representation of everything that

the original one was. It did the same type of

thing. It played to the same beats that the original

one did without, you know, just being a copycat,

so to speak. And the other thing that I really

appreciated that the film did is instead of just

allowing these larger -than -life comic personalities

of, you know, Melissa McCarthy or, you know,

whichever one you want to pick, instead of just

kind of saying, okay, it's your turn to do your

shtick and it's, okay, now it's your turn to

shine, it really allowed these characters to

be part of this team where they... Their jokes

made sense like they're They're interact it made

sense the interactions and the motivations within

the group So, you know, it wasn't Melissa McCarthy

just doing Melissa McCarthy It was more of a

subdued performance I think from her and the

way they wrote all those four characters are

really let them work together as a team And that's

something that I wasn't sure was gonna happen

that I was really appreciative of Okay But I

did just really appreciate that. I thought I'm

going to forget her name right now. Kate McKinnon?

Nope. The subway girl. Leslie Jones. Yeah, Leslie

Jones. I very much enjoyed Leslie Jones. I do

think that McKinnon stole the show, but I thought

there was something to enjoy from all of them.

Some of the cameos might seem a bit forced and

might not be for everybody, but I think it was

all in good fun. I had a lot of fun with it.

What score would you give it, Amanda, out of

10? Ooh, I wanna give it... I'm gonna give it

a 9 out of 10. Wow. Very high score from Amanda.

Matt, what did you think? I'd give it a high

8. Like, I would buy this on Blu -ray. Alright.

And I'm probably somewhere in the very high 7

range, maybe low 8 range, but I'm gonna give

it a 7. I thought it was everything you should

want in kind of... that type of genre of a film

during the summer. Like, I don't know. So then

if it's everything that you should want out of

that type of genre for that film, why give it

just a seven? Because it's not something that

I'm gonna put, like, as the best film of the

year. It didn't, like, blow me away. I just had

fun with it. Like, so if I... But it accomplished

what it set out to do. Yeah. Some films set out

to not do much, and just because they accomplished

that, I'm not gonna give them brownie points.

This movie set out to do a lot, so... Big shoes

to fill. I enjoyed it. Big shoes to fill. Real

high seven. And to that big shoes to fill like

how many horror comedies like are there like

not many like if you go to Box office mode is

about a hundred and some of them are like I don't

really think about one it This one had both the

comedy and the horror like I literally jumped

Yeah, like if you jumped and you're a horror

fan and that just shows that it managed to get

the the horror elements in there that they that

they needed like it Like it did what it set out

to do and it did it really well. I'm happy that

it did well and I'm happy I had some awesome

lines too in there kind of sticking a middle

finger up to all those people that were criticizing

the film so those are some fun moments. Some

more obvious and some more subtle but they're

very cool moments within the film as well. Alright

let's shift to one other film that Amanda we

saw this last week and giving people your take

on Star Trek Beyond. Oh man, I should have maybe

prepared some notes on this or something. I'm

gonna just fly by the seat of my pants here.

I think that all the haters that were shitty

about this movie definitely don't be my friend

anymore. I liked it. There wasn't all this crazy,

I mean there's craziness going on, but there

wasn't so much stuff thrown at you in this one.

and I've heard people say that they were bored

or whatever and I think that this one was just

about showing you how deep rooted this team and

this crew really really got as far as their relationships

go because they were in deep space together for

so long they were going through a ton of stuff

together and they managed to just to grow into

a stronger crew and really you know love each

other And I think that this movie was trying

to set up the fact that there is this strain

of longevity in their crew. I mean, it definitely

shows that this crew is gonna take it there and

they're gonna be together for a long time still.

This is to kind of keep it moving and to show

you that there's this unity and this, you know,

everything that... Starfleet really kind of stands

for, you know what I mean? So I really liked

it. I liked the characters. I liked the new characters.

I think that Simon Pegg is always super awesome

for me in this. And I really enjoyed it. I wasn't

bored with it. I think Star Trek just continues

to be one of the most polarizing properties and

franchises that you can possibly come across.

And I guess my take is this. You have... Three

different types of people that are watching this

film. You have people that are die -hard original

Star Trek fans that were super big fans of, you

know, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy in the

original series or movies or et cetera. Then

you have just your general Star Trek fans that

are fans of the franchise or the property but

not necessarily super rooted in the original

series. Maybe they like Deep Space Nine or it's,

you know, uh... the next generation or one of

the other iterations and then you have people

that are just completely oblivious to Star Trek

because they thought it was for nerds and they're

too cool for school and I think for a lot of

people the the reboot has really appealed to

those people that didn't necessarily know too

much about Star Trek beforehand from what I've

gotten and From what I've seen on the internet

so far with Star Trek Beyond the people that

are enjoying Star Trek Beyond are the are the

die -hards the ones that really liked the original

series or just the casual Star Trek fans like

I haven't heard too many Star Trek fans or die

-hard original series fans that are saying too

much negative about this where I'm getting the

negative feedback from is from those people that

weren't Star Trek fans, but then we're big fans

of the the original reboot here in 2009, I think

it was, and then Into Darkness. The people that

really liked those two films are shitting on

this film. And I guess I can somewhat see that

because it is totally a little bit different

than what you got with Star Trek and Star Trek

Into Darkness. But for me... And maybe it's just

because I am a Star Trek fan, this really worked

for me. I've heard a lot of people say that it's

like an extended episode of the series or something

like that, which I can kind of see that. But

that's what a lot of the films have been in the

Star Trek franchise. And that doesn't necessarily

mean they've all been good or bad. They've been

hit or miss. But they're all kind of extended

episodes. That's kind of the point. And where

we pick up here, in Into Darkness, they were

just leaving for like a five -year mission in

space or whatever. And we're picking them up.

three years into this so they've been at this

for a while and they're feeling you know somewhat

run down or somewhat burned out they need a break

that type of stuff so it's kind of an interesting

setup where we get some of the characters motivations

for you know wanting to continue maybe not wanting

to continue etc and I think it's a good character

piece the the thing that I was worried about

is I wasn't sure if it was going to be dominated

by Justin Lin or dominated by Simon Pegg who

is a big Star Trek fan. So I didn't know who

would win out in that battle, and it seemed like,

for me at least, that Simon Pegg wins out in

that. You do have some action sequences that

you can definitely see some Justin Lin in, but

I think there's enough Simon Pegg influence to

make it work for most Star Trek fans. I loved

Sophia, I'm gonna say her name wrong, Batella,

what was her name, Jayla? in the movie, I thought

that was a fantastic new character that I hope

we get to see continue. It's not a perfect film,

there are some faults, but I had a ton of fun

with this. I would say that, you know, months

ago we talked about the rumor that they were

inserting some new scenes that had to deal with,

you know, the movie had basically wrapped and

they were inserting a couple scenes. I do think

that those scenes weren't necessary. I don't

believe they added enough to the film that really

made it that intriguing. But outside of that,

I really didn't have too many issues with that.

I had a lot of fun. To me, just like Ghostbusters,

this is what you want from your summer blockbuster,

science fiction, fantasy, whatever genre you're

going for, to just sit back, have some popcorn

and pop, and just have some fun with it. Because

I had fun the entire time. You get Idris Elba

as a villain. You get some... cool moments between

the cast that we've already kind of gotten to

know over the past two films. And I was never

bored. I was never having a problem with the

pacing whatsoever. So I would recommend this

to any Star Trek fan. If you're not a Star Trek

fan and all you liked was Star Trek and Into

Darkness, maybe stay away from it. You're not

going to like it, apparently. But if you like

any of the other Star Trek properties, I think

this is going to be right up your alley. So I

would give this one a 7 out of 10 as well. What

about you, Amanda? Oh, man. Yeah, I'd give it

a 7. All right. Any other films, Dan, that you

saw over the last little bit that you wanted

to bring up? No, that was really it for me. OK.

All right. So coming out on Blu -ray this next

Tuesday, in case you're looking to see what you

can get at the butcher store or on demand or

on Redbox, et cetera, we have The Bronze, we

have Keanu, which we're looking forward to seeing

since we missed that the first time around, The

Trust, High Rise, Batman the Killing Joke like

Dan was talking about. You have Mother's Day,

Meet the Blacks, and The Lobster all being released

in various forms. Some have had some digital

releases already, but coming out to video for

most people. And then for theater releases coming

out this weekend, we have Jason Bourne, Into

the Forest, and Bad Moms. Dan, what are you looking

forward to the most? I know you were a huge fan

of The Lobster. Are you going to pass up your

opportunity to buy that to go see Jason Bourne

in theater? Yeah, I... Yeah, Jason, I love the

Bourne franchise, so I'm hopefully going to be

seeing that this weekend in some capacity, so

super excited for that. All right, Amanda, are

you buying Keanu or going to see Jason Bourne?

Oh, shit, son. Well, I definitely want to see

Bourne. Definitely have been waiting for that,

just seeing Matt Damon knock that dude out with

like one swift one. I'm like, yes. But Keanu

and the Lobster, I really wanted to see both

of those, so I'm kind of stuck. I know I'm gonna

see Bourne, so we'll just kind of fudge it here

and say that I'm going to buy Keanu. And then

wait and buy Bourne. To see it later. Intrigued

by all of them. I want to see the lobster I want

to see piano, and I want to see born But I'm

not going to pass up the opportunity to see born

in the theater and get back to the Matt Damon

goodness So I'm right there too Matt anything

on that list that intrigues you um Honestly,

I didn't know that they were doing a straight

to blu -ray DVD Red Sonja story and like that

intrigues me all right And then, of course, our

question for you guys is, what was the highlight
