Prime, and you are listening to all things Transformers.

Welcome to an all new generation of all things

Transformers as we get the origins of any and

all TF fans that we can. I'm of course TF2 and

Mike. Joining me is not Steve Megatron this time

around, but I do have a new guest. It has been

a while since we've done an origins episode.

I think the last one we did was Rodimus Primal

sometime in 2021, I think. I don't remember.

Anyway, today's guest is none other than the

Transmissions Podcast's host, number one Beast

Wars fan, the Cybertronian beast, Daryl. Hello,

sir. My gosh. I'm burying myself with that title.

My gosh. Yeah, thanks for having me. Wow, I'm

following Rodimus Primal. Oh, man. Oh, gosh.

Your show is going down fast. No, no, no. I've

said this on this podcast before, and I've said

this on every other podcast I do with Transformers,

and it has nothing to do with anything. I don't

give a crap about the political thing. When it

comes to Transformers, even though I don't like

certain generations, I still believe all generations

matter. It is what it is. I gave myself that

title because I purchased a very expensive Beast

Wars toy that none of the other guys would even

come close to getting and they consider themselves

Experts on the G on they on the Beast Wars lore.

So if I was gonna pony up the cash Then I should

take the title of number one Beast Wars fan,

right? come right so it's the um ickard and taco

tank from uh from the i think it's the neo or

beast wars neo yeah okay so it's uh yeah it's

a it's it's a cool looking cool looking g1 or

sorry i keep saying g1 but beast wars figure

that the the ickard is uh just the little the

little squid guy the I can't remember the name

of the mainline guy from over here in North America,

but the taco tank was basically why I wanted

it. Just a ridiculous, huge, huge figure. It

was an accessory to this Icard, and I just wanted

this massive. you know squid octopus thing and

and it and it is it is just an incredible an

incredible beast wars figure to have and yeah

so yeah i i claimed it and i've i've i often

remind the guys on the show you know the the

title is up for grabs you just gotta buy it It's

purchasable. Merchandising! Merchandising! And

for those that don't know and for those listeners

who may be listening to this that don't listen

to Transmissions, first of all, go listen to

Transmissions because it is an awesome podcast.

I mainly listen to the comic episodes because

I have not been keeping up. I got to the end

of volume. Yeah, absolutely. I got to the end

of volume three of the 2019 ongoing in trade

and I'm like, what the hell is going on here?

I just can't, but the Beast Wars comic, I enjoy

that. Anyway, we have 25, 26 questions that we

ask all of our Transformers fans, guests and

starting out. Even though we kind of should already

know this answer. Did you grow up with transformers?

And at what age do you remember first noticing

the franchise? Well, yeah for sure. So I'm totally

Right in the thick of it. I was born in 1980.

So 1984 I'm four years old the 86 movie hits.

I'm six and I'm in this I'm in the thick of it

and Transformers I've often tried to remember

what might have been my first Transformers figure.

I do recall getting a Skywarp. I remember having

a Skywarp figure at least three times because

I do remember breaking him a number of times.

I do remember getting a Devastator gift set for

Christmas. I actually still have a picture of

myself getting the ultra magnus figure for christmas

with go box on the tv in the background which

is just a meta picture like crazy but the. Yeah

i remember you know that the cartoon being a

real important part for me the comics. Never

even entered my my you know my my sight line

until much later i was in my teens when i first

noticed her first you even knew that the car

the transformers had a comic i knew you and i

are same here so i was four when i debuted as

well and i only knew the cartoon until like ninety

five maybe i first noticed but i still didn't

care. I, by 95, I was completely out of, I was

way out of Transformers by then. Yeah. Again,

some of these early questions are just to establish

the origin of the guest because, you know, so

the listeners know where you come from, but what

Transformers generation is your generation and

why is it not Beast Wars? I modified that, but

basically what is your generation? I am a, I'm

a G -1er wholeheartedly. And I have been desperately

trying to complete the G1 collection. Really?

Yeah. I'm just over 300 G1 figures right now.

So it's getting up there. It's gotten to the

point where the G1 figures that I'm missing are

the expensive, very expensive G1 figures. So

it's gotten down to the point where I'm getting

one a year at this point. But they're nice. I

love them. They're fun. They're blocky. They're

chunky. They're great figures. Yeah, absolutely.

What other generations of Transformers do you

like? You touch on it there and it is a joke

and I do make fun of it on the show that I really

do enjoy the Beast Wars toys. The show, I can't

stand the show and still have not watched the

show and I take a lot of heat on that. I take

an awful lot of heat. But the toys, I love them.

I've got so many of the original Beast Wars toys.

And to the point that, you know, we've I've given

myself this name of the number one Beast Wars

fan because I will spend some serious coin on

getting some really sought after Beast Wars toys,

some Japanese ones, some, you know, some harder

to find, you know, stuff like that. The other

guys that they love the the lore and the show,

but they don't they don't want to pony up the

cash for the, you know, the expensive toys. All

right, so you say that and my question back to

you would be why won't you pony up the time to

Just at least check out the show to see if you

like it or not Well, there's just so many other

good shows and Yes, I like to watch the other

you know the other shows and then maybe g1 again,

you know, why not So I I'm trying to remember

if you guys submitted lists. I don't remember.

I remember reaching out to you guys. We did our

top 100 transformers characters countdown last

year. We've been doing top 100 countdowns here

at the get cast radio network since 2011. And

I had to go through and I say had to, but I'm

the producer. I'm the one that. Does most of

the major editing because i have the time to

do so like i don't have a nine to five job i

don't have anybody in my life right now. I need

more anyway but that's a whole other thing you

know so i have the time to watch all ninety eight

episodes and record every second of audio same

thing with beast wars watching all three seasons

of that. I only went to the. 2001 series and

the unicorn trilogy series when I absolutely

had to find a character I was not recording all

that audio so There are better shows that I can

watch Yeah So I have I have tried to watch the

unicorn trilogy it it was it was way like I mean

obviously we're the same age so it was way out

of our wheelhouses at the time and yeah, I've

sat down to start from the beginning and I cannot

do it. It's, it's, it's, it's a slog at the start

and it's just terrible. So I can't, I have to,

I can't, I can't do it. I turn it off and, and

I've been told that it does get better when you

get into, you know, energon and and unicorn And

it gets worse. No, don't don't listen to those

people. They tell you it's better. It gets worse

Cybertron is really where it's at and and really

where it finds its it's you know, it's stride

But I'm not waiting to series to get into that

so, you know, so there's there's some bad there's

some bad cartoons out there and And even I'll

admit it. I was talking with the guys about it

on our most recent shows is I haven't gone back

and watched any of the Japanese exclusive G1

stuff either and I really need to do that and

that's something that's kind of bugged me because

I'm this G1 guy that needs to watch, you know,

is really harping on the G1 stuff and I, you

know, I don't... I really don't give myself the

opportunity to watch this original G1 stuff from

Japan. I would watch that before I watch the

Beast Wars stuff. For me, and I know this sounds

wrong, but I say this in all sincerity, it's

just the way I am. If it's not dubbed in English,

I will not watch it. I am not watching. I'm not

reading my television. That's not why we have

televisions. We have them so we can watch, hear,

and understand what we're watching and hearing.

So I'm going to give you a challenge. If you

want to do this, you can. If you don't want to,

whatever. But I'm going to challenge you to watch.

Beast Wars parts one and two. It's the first

two episodes of season one. And then where is

the, oh, the Starscream episode, uh, possession.

Is that in season one or season two? Yeah. So

after that watch possession, which is season

one, episode 21. So if you can watch those three

episodes, because The first two are basically

their journey from Cybertron to being crash -landed

in prehistoric Earth. So it's kind of similar

to the more than meets the eye three -parter

from G1. And then possession, Starscream's ghost

comes back and takes over Waspinator. So I think

you'll get a kick out of that because you are

a G1 guy. So if you're willing. This thought

of me being so anti Beast Wars Also also brings

up this idea that I've never seen any Beast Wars

I've seen quite a bit of Beast Wars. It's just

never been from start to finish So I've seen

I've seen the first I think the first five episodes

or so I've seen possession I've seen code of

hero I've seen okay, you know the parts where

I can't remember where it is, but when the Transmetal

guys interact with the arc and all the dead Autobots

and all that jazz. I've seen all of that stuff,

right? Yeah, the end of season one beginning

of season two. Yeah. Okay. Perfect. So I've seen

all of that and I've seen a bunch of, uh, you

know, the Transmetal, uh, episodes. Um, but it's,

it's, you know, it's just like I've said on,

on, on transmissions. I'm a very visual person.

And if the, if the stuff I'm looking at, it's

like with, with you and, uh, you know, subtitles,

if, if it's not, if it's not visually appealing

to me, I can't, I can't get into it. You know,

okay. That's, that's fun. See some of the times

when I've heard you on the B stores reviews on

transmissions on alt mode. To me personally,

as a listener, it sounds the way it's conveyed

sometimes is that you haven't seen any of it.

So if you've already seen it and you say, okay,

it's not for me. Okay. It's not for you. That's

just the way it is. Yeah. No, I've seen quite

a bit of it. Okay. It just looks like garbage

to me. So that's why I just don't like it. I

mean, I'll give them credit. It's written well,

right? But if you can't stand looking at something,

I'll listen to it, but it loses half of its appeal.

Yeah, you're right. So speaking of liking and

or loathing things, do you like or loathe the

Bayverse or are you indifferent to it? Man that's

a that's a loaded question. So the The Bay verse

has given Transformers quite a lot and we've

discussed it at length on the show because the

Bay verse For whatever your thoughts are on the

movies themselves drew Incredible amounts of

attention to the Transformers as a brand and

gave us Essentially the products and the lines

that we have now so masterpiece in its current

state wouldn't be what it is without the the

bavers movies and. Just the the sheer influx

of cash into the transformers brand put an incredible

amount of product on the shelves. You know, if

you can go back in time and think of what Transformers

was in the early 2000s, right? 2002 to 2005,

because after that, they're prepping for the

movie and they're kind of getting, you know,

they're building, you know, excitement. It was,

you know, one line every year or every other

year or something like that. It was not big,

right? No. Yeah, it was not big at all anymore

because again you had You had cartoon properties

on television that nobody gave a shit about yeah

so, you know, you just had very few dollars going

into it and You know the movies themselves. I

give credit to bringing fans to the to the to

the the property again now as far as the movies

themselves go There's bits and pieces in it that

I like You know, I like I like the fact that

Now I'm struggling to find things that I like

about so the I mean I like I Like I like the

idea that they kept optimist prime a truck and

you know that kind of stuff I do like some of

the Michael Bay explosion II aspects of it all

because He does action like nobody else. So if

you're going to a summer blockbuster, you want

some shit to explode and he blew some shit up

and that's exactly what you wanted to see. Um,

so that's, you know, that's what I wanted out

of those movies. I wanted some stuff to, to blow

up. I wanted some, um, some funny kind of quirky

dialogue. And, you know, but I wanted, if I wanted

to see, you know, depth in my characters that

was not in those movies, you know? No, no, no.

Yeah. Yeah. And you know what? Writer's strike,

no writer's strike. Whatever in 2009, you know

what I mean? Like, look, if, if the writers went

on strike because they weren't paid enough or

they wanted better, whatever, and they needed

to do that, that's, that's fine. I mean, I know

that was a dark time for not just transformers

in cinema, but just cinema in general, because

there was a writer's union strike. It is what

it is. There's like, there's. But yeah, the Bay

movies. Yeah, you're right. We wouldn't. I highly

doubt we would have kingdom. Rodimus and Galvatron.

And those are two of the single best toys we've

ever had now. It's true. And but what I what

I'm more happy about is the fact like, you know,

Rodimus, Galvatron, you know, those characters,

those are main line top tier characters. What

what I look at are the characters that we had

with like We had Misfire. We had, you know, we

had a six shot again. We had, we had all those,

all those like E level characters that were coming

back in generations. And, and those were the

ones that I thought when I saw them announced,

I was like, holy shit, we're getting like all

these characters again. That was, that was amazing.

So that's the shit that came back because of,

you know, the movie line. And it's hadn't, you

know, it wouldn't have been directly. You wouldn't

have sent, you know, presented by transformers,

the movie, you know, misfire. It's, it's just

the, because so much fricking money came into

the line. They said, okay, well your budget is

in, you know, it's huge right now. Who do you

want to do? Let's do misfire. Oh, and forget

about the Titan class. That shit wouldn't have

happened without the movie. Right. We've got

two feet tall fricking transformers right now.

Right. And, and we've got what? Seven of them,

you know, eight of them, actually, I think eight.

Yes. I own seven and there's an eighth one. So,

yeah. So there's eight of these fucking things

now and, and they're two feet tall, you know?

So, yeah, even though it was crowdfunded and

say what you will about toy companies doing crowdfunding,

whatever, but. Even though it was crowdfunded,

there is no way in hell we would have ever gotten

a unicorn. Never. Not in a million years. The

fandom was too small at the time. Yeah. I'm part

of the subreddit for Transformers on Reddit.

And every single year, there's a movie leading

up to it. The people who sub to that Reddit explode.

Like the, the amount of people that join that

subreddit absolutely explode. It's almost at

a hundred thousand people right now. And, uh,

and I was, I was part of it down at like 1500,

I think. So it's, it's, you know, I've been a

part of their subreddit for a long, long time,

but it's, it's, it's ridiculous. Every single

time something comes up with transformers in

the mainstream. the subreddit goes insane. So

you said this off air, but I'm going to ask anyway,

even though you probably don't remember, what

was your very first Transformers toy as a kid?

So, yeah, I don't particularly remember exactly

what it was, but I have memories of a lot of

having a lot of Transformers toys as a kid. So

I do recall a Christmas getting Devastator, the

Devastator gift set. I do remember Getting a

sky warp. I do remember having wheel jack And

I do remember having ultra Magnus these are all

the likelihood that my first first ever transformer

was like a minibot is much more likely because

I would have been quite young and Yeah My mother

would probably have tested the waters with something

cheaper and smaller, so instead of buying me

something that was much larger, I do know that

I did have an original G1 Optimus Prime at some

point, but it was much likelier that it was something

like a Minibot or something like that. I remember

having Prime Minibot Bumblebee and Think I had

Megatron Wow lucky I know I know by the time

85 rolled around and the 85 line came out the

first thing I went out and you know first thing

I told my mom I wanted was was blaster and his

cassettes and Cool never had a sound wave as

a kid, but I've had a sound wave since then I

don't have him anymore but in from 2005 to 2011

I basically I was working at a place that basically

gave me exuberant amounts of money for doing

the job that I was doing. I'm like, ooh, what's

this eBay thing in 2006? I'm like, wow, yeah,

how many transformers can I buy? I'm like, oh

God, $120 each for Optimus Blaster and whatever.

eBay prices are crazy now. They were still crazy

back then, but wow, just yeah, crazy, crazy stuff.

So this is a question. The next one is a question

I asked because I used to do this all the time

and I don't know if other people do this growing

up. Did you and your friends ever pretend to

play transformers at say school or recess or

something? And by this, I mean, basically we

didn't have the term live action role play in

the eighties. We just played pretend. So like,

I'm going to say I'm hot rod and you can be Galvatron,

you know what I mean? Like that kind of sure

sure so you're talking about Without toys just

you know, yeah. Yeah without toys just by yourselves.

Just running around the playground kind of thing

Yeah, no, no, I don't recall doing that. I wasn't

I wasn't that that nerdy But I do see I do recall

doing that when a ninja turtles hit Ninja turtles

because they were, you know, ninjas and it was

cool to kick your friends. Uh, that was, uh,

that was something that, uh, we, we, we enjoyed

doing much more. Um, I do have a memory of bringing

a transformer to school though, and playing with

the transformer at school. And, and that we did

that all the time. Yeah, that we did all the

time, but this is like just, you know, using.

twigs and leaves for blasters and just stuff

and just play. I don't know. I was look when

I was in school and I eventually want to do a

separate podcast on our flagship show about this.

When i was in school if i said i liked some to

anybody a teacher another student a friend of

mine whatever and they looked at me like i was

literally i got detention in fourth grade for

saying i listen to hard rock and i like girls

and i'm like what the hell is the eighties were

a fucked up time everybody they really were.

Who is your end all be all favorite character

from any Transformers incarnation you can pick

one Decepticon one Autobot one Maximal and one

Predacon. Oh boy. The G1 figure or character

that I generally go to is is one that I I wanted

to have forever. Finally got and I do have him

in a you know, you know G1 box now and I'm really

happy about that. It's jetfire. I Always wanted

a g1 jetfire and and I eventually did get one

in a really good place like like a in a nice

price too, but he just looked mint and then I

eventually traded him in for a some credit and

got A boxed one so i now have a really nice a

really nice jet fire in a g1 box and. I'm too

darn big to sneak around like this the decepticon

man. What's the decepticon that i would have

wanted i'm just sitting here scouring my shelves

of g1 sitting there beside me you don't really

notice. When they were in the TV show how how

under manned the Decepticons were by comparison

to the Autobots and Yet they were still beating

them and the Autobots should have been kicking

their asses Constantly like there should not

have been even in a remote chance that the Decepticons

hadn't had it had a Chance in hell of ever getting

any energy out of those, you know energy plants

and But they did So the G the I would say the

the character from from Decepticon oh That's

a good. That's a really good question. I'm gonna

go with shockwave I'm gonna go with shockwave

because I like his toy and he makes some cool

ass noises What is your command Megatron You

are to stay behind. I entrust Cybertron to you,

Shockwave. Fear not, Megatron. Cybertron shall

remain as you leave it. Excellent! Yeah, yeah,

let's do that one. Okay. What about the Beast

Wars and the Mr. Number One fan? Okay, so let's...

I'm gonna try not to embarrass myself by not

remembering anybody's fucking name. So Man, I

don't remember if he's at the maximal or Predacon.

I love Torka Who's he which one's he is he? I

Love that toy. I just dumped me on that one because

I don't think I've ever heard of him No, he's

one of those fusions. He's a he's like a lion

or an elephant and a shark put together Yeah,

okay, and he's he's just fucking cool. I like

I like that one Don't I don't it doesn't you

know, it's never really concerned me whether

he was maximal or Predacon Just his toy is fucking

cool. So I like that one Interesting Yeah, I

can't believe you're having a hard time picking

a Predacon, I mean come on so so torque as a

maximal, okay Is he i'm not i wasn't looking

i don't know i was trying to find that i couldn't

find it uh let me see beast wars torca maximal

all right so there you go predacon so predacon

predacon predacon that is that's a toughie i

i i want to say megatron Because of the dinosaur

but i really hated i always hated that the dinosaur

head is a hand i hate it's i thought it was ridiculous

no i always thought it was kind of fun because

again you know compare. Let's compare gun megatron

to tyrannosaurus megatron. Gun Megatron has all

kinds of logical places where his gun pieces

could go on him, so he doesn't really have a

huge backpack. You look at Tyrannosaurus Megatron

and it's like, where are we going to put this

giant dinosaur head? Oh, let's have it double

as an arm. That makes sense. Sort of. Least he

can use it as a weapon. I mean he can you know

crush people in his Tyranno teeth in robot mode

or something. Oh, yes Okay, this is a this is

one. This is a Predacon for you. So it's and

it is from Beast Wars 2 so and I actually I really

like the look of this guy. This is this is Galvatron.

So Galvatron is worse, too Yeah, he's a cool

-looking. He's a cool -looking character And

he becomes a dragon, I think. Yeah, it's a dragon.

Yeah, so there you go. I've got all these awesome

toys and I'm like, shit, which faction do they

belong to? I don't remember. I'm only saying

this in jest. You're a Transformers fan and you

don't know these things? Like when you've got,

I mean, obviously we've, we've all got shit tons

of toys, but I, you know, you look around and

I'm like, I just like the toys, you know, I really

like the toys and, and I just, you know, I start

to, uh, I start to just forget which, uh, which

side some of them are on, but I should have really

remembered Galvatron being a Predacon. That's

a, that should have been a given. I'm sorry,

everybody. I'm sorry. It's okay. We, we're understanding

around here. So what are some other Transformers

characters that you like? I always, I always,

I mean, it's cliche, but I do like Starscream.

I think he's a, a fantastic character. The way

that they've done him in pretty much all media

since his inception has always been very consistent.

He's a perfect backstabbing son of a bitch and

just I really enjoyed the way they did them in

prime that kind of carried through to robots

in disguise and just his presence in all current

media always seems to be, you know, you know,

Megatron slipped. I guess I'm the leader now.

So, uh, yeah, but I just, I love it. It's just,

he's always waiting in the wings to take over.

And I, I really, I really like that. He's, he's

got. You know, he's not stupid. He's very smart

and I just I like that The autobots really don't

have anybody like that. Obviously, there's not

going to be anybody to backstab, but there's

really nobody that I don't know just kind of

If if optimus and megatron are numbers one and

two Starscream is right there at number three

like you know There's there's really no arguing

with who the third the third best character in

the series is Yeah, and there's no arguing with

the fourth best character either which is sound

wave He's he's pretty good You're gonna get some

arguments from a lot of people as to who who

kind of comes in that fourth place though Cuz

I mean, obviously you're gonna get Grimlock or

some other shit like that You know, well, yeah,

but I mean secret characters but sound wave sound

wave has come through Quite a lot and he's fairly

consistent in in all of his incarnations as well

Absolutely Now we don't like to promote hate

around here, but are there any transformers characters

that you hate? Fucking hate bumblebee at this

point. He is He's he's so used Oh up right now.

He he's everywhere. He is absolutely everywhere

And I cannot stand it. The movies, you know,

we talked and I mentioned how much the movies

have done for the fandom. Well, they've they've

absolutely bastardized the character of Bumblebee

and he was such a good character in G1 and he

was the cute little, you know, audience representation

in the show and The movies have ruined him and

then the toys went around and made you hate him

because that's all you saw on the show the shelves

and That's the that's that's it. I just I can't

can't stand bumblebee now every single new iteration

of the toys other than this last one, you know

had to have a bumblebee in it, right and then

then they made the Netflix bumblebee and made

it You know a super short pack and nobody could

find the goddamn thing so you know and now and

now i hate it even more so you know is just is

just. You know it's just rage in my body right

now for bumblebee and yeah so i can see the flames

on the side of your face right about it's crazy

yeah i just anybody wants to talk to me about

bumblebee is not it's not a good idea i just.

Unfiltered at this point. The only thing with

me and B is I want Hasbro or whomever it has

to be, no pun intended, to go to a certain person

and say, hey, we recognize that you were the

original. Come back. Gotcha. You know. And I

don't think they've ever said that because obviously

look what Bay did to him in the movies. I mean,

you know, you're either using a radio or you're

using beeps. Like I was so happy and shocked

that frigging Eric Matthews slash Batman Beyond

was the voice of Bumblebee and Transformers Prime.

And I was like, Oh my God, it's Will Friedle.

That's amazing. You know, just give. You want

to talk about like the infamous, you know, most

used Transformers seven or whatever, Optimus,

Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, Grimlock, Bumblebee,

whatever. Bumblebee is in there because like

you said, he's the kid, he's the kid identifying

character outside of if there's a human with

him like Spike kind of thing. And it's just like

one movie. I just want one movie where I hear

Dan Gilvezan's voice coming out of an ugly ass

Michael Bay design, because it'll make it all

that much better. Hey everybody, this is Dan

Gilvezan, voice of G1 Bumblebee, and you're listening

to All Things Transformers. I thought it'd be

funny if during one of the Bay movies where...

the radio was flipping around the channels. One

of the channels landed on a Dan Gilazan clip.

I thought that would have been a really good

little wink. Look, most people aren't going to

understand this, but wink, here you go. Wink

and nod, we know. Again, I'm not asking for...

What i love for dan to have a full you know two

hour film of him speaking is bubble be in a major

role yes absolutely i want that for him but what

you just said. They could have done that like

i've seen the behind the scenes things on the

original fifteen year old first live action film

where michael bay was like yeah we had to get

peter cullen we had to get optimus prime well

what about. The other major, whatever, it is

what it is. We've gone on a lot of those on the

show, and Lorenzo Della Bona Ventura, who's the

one who's kind of holding the rights on the Transformers

movies, is not a person who's essentially a fan

of Transformers. He's a fan of making Transformers

movies because they make money, and that's about

it. If you got somebody in charge that was actually

a fan and it doesn't have to be a writer because

we all know that the writers They've had writers

who were fans in the in the rooms and and good

writers, too but they just they just can't they

can't get it past this producer and This producer

is is kind of strangling the franchise at this

point And that sucks Over your lifetime as you

got older did your interest in the transformers

franchise grow stronger or get weaker? so that's

an interesting question because I am a cyclical

person and okay, I have hit I have hit the wall

with transformers many times and Over my life.

I can I can come to the point where I did it

the first time and it was It was Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles did it for me because they were

the new and exciting thing and the cartoon was

freaking awesome and I wanted to watch that show

and Transformers was on its way out and I wanted

the turtles and I just I swapped and that's just

I think what most people did. So I was one of

them and after that, you know, I kind of grew

up. I went to high school. I got into girls.

And I didn't want anything to do with toys. So

after that, you know, you kind of get older more.

And I remember getting back into Transformers.

And, you know, I was actually in Florida on vacation

and walking through a I think it was a Kmart

at the time. And we were going through and I

saw the toy section and it was classics Starscream

and animated Voyager Optimus. So both of those

were like, Oh, Transformers look cool. This Starscream

looks like the old one I used to have. And this

Optimus is, you know, is not a truck. It's like

a, I don't know what it is. It looks weird. I'm

going to get it. So I bought two Transformers

on this vacation and, and I was like, I was back

in and that was, that was it. But over the course

of that time, you know, that was 25 years ago,

I Will come back and forth I will I will get

out of transformers and then I will get into

comics or I'll get you know out of comics and

I'll get into hockey cards or I'll get out of

that and I'll get back into Transformers again,

but ever since we've started the podcast over

on transmissions. I've I've I've hit a wall During

that time numerous times i'm just like i can't

i can't with transformers anymore it's too much

every single goddamn day transformers transformers

transformers i can't do it and the guys at the

end of the week when i log in to do the show.

They get me back you know that's just the attitude

and everybody's just all you know yeah we're

having a good time and i have i have fun talking

with the guys and. By the end of the show, I'm

all, I'm all happy and again, so I really do

credit the guys for, for keeping me in it because

you know, it's been, you know, it's sometimes

it's hard and a lot of people will probably,

you know, know my feeling because you just, at

some points you walk into your little collection

room. I don't know where a lot of people keep

their stuff, but I have a little office, you

know, collection room that I have. And I walk

in and I'm like, huh, this is a lot of stuff.

Yeah, and you know, I think is this is this my

legacy is this what I'm doing with my life and

then and then I pull out, you know a box of comics

or a you know, I look at my my extremely expensive

Beast Wars figure or you know my my my really

cool third party figures and I'm like, these

are kind of cool. I like these, you know, and

and then I'm back. So, you know So yeah, it's,

you know, every now and then I do hit a wall

and I'll get out of it for a bit or I'll, I'll

change focus a little bit, you know, and then,

uh, and then I'll come back to it. But yeah,

there's, there's never been a point where I'll

just, I've stuck with it the whole time. Yeah.

Yeah. I mean, that's the thing. It's, you know,

and the thing with, especially doing a podcast

about transformers is that I've been doing podcasting

for 14 years and I fully believe podcasting,

just the art of sitting down and hitting record

or sitting down and putting your headphones on

and waiting for somebody to hit record. And once,

you know, once you do that and you're sitting

there for an hour or two hours, whatever it is,

talking to your friends about the thing that

you all enjoy, no matter what branch of that

franchise each of you enjoys, at least everybody

has something that they can bring to the table.

Whether it's positive, negative, comedy, a joke,

maybe it's a sad story, whatever, and it just

makes you feel better. There's nothing more.

I don't know if you've read Neil Ross's book,

Vocal Recall. No, I haven't. I've sat in on a

lot of panels of his though. Okay, so I mentioned

the name Neil Ross and everybody should know

Neil Ross was the voice of Springer. He was also

in radio He also does all kinds of other things

and everything else. Well, he put out a book

a couple of years ago called vocal recall and

He sent me the audio version so I could listen

to it as well because I bought the book I mean,

I wasn't not gonna buy the book And one thing

he says in there is for him, the joy for me is

in the performance, not the playback. And that

is something that I relate to. Like I enjoy doing

what I'm doing right now more than I enjoy spending

the four to five to six hours. I do editing shows

to make them sound the best that they could set.

Well, I cycle paths like editing podcasts. Well,

I guess you can call me getaway then wait, maybe

not maybe not that desperate maybe not that evil

It depends it depends on what I'm editing it

depends on what I can because I always like inserting

clips to various things like You know, whatever

like if bumblebee says something or Starscream

says something or you know, whatever and it relates

to whatever where I usually insert them anyway,

but You know, so it is, it is what it is. But

yeah, I mean, you know, as long as you're enjoying

what you're doing, whether it's podcasting about

it, whether it's just, you know, sitting there,

admiring your collection, whether it's taking

photos of your collection and put on Instagram,

whatever it is, as long as you're enjoying it,

that's all that matters. And if you're not enjoying

it, then like you said, there are plenty of other

things that you could, you don't necessarily

have to sell your entire collection, but you

can still move on. like you said about moving

from Transformers to Turtles, I recently did

a podcast where we talked about our top 20 most

rewatched cartoons. My buddy Steve and Kevin

and I got together and we each made a list individual

of each other and we had 20 cartoon series that

we had on there of stuff that we like to rewatch

from whatever. In that episode, I said that it

just There were that there was in the eighties

there was a five to six year span from eighty

two to eighty eight. Where things just moved

along eighty two gejo started eighty three he

man started eighty four transformer started eighty

five. He -Man ended, She -Ra started, Thundercat

started, Silverhawks, blah, blah, blah. And then

you reach Turtles in, in 87, you know, you also

had DuckTales in 87. So it was just a smooth

transition for us as kids because it wasn't like.

We were kids. We were watching various cartoons.

We weren't locked into one thing. Whereas now

as old men, we're like, Ooh, Transformers. Some

of us are like, Ooh, Transformers. This is all

I want. And that's fine. That's not a, you know.

It is what it is. With the internet giving birth

to the fans all having a voice about what they

like or don't like about Transformers, do you

find your voice gets lost in the shuffle or do

you just shout louder? Well, frankly, I just

say what I find people might want to know and

after that, I don't care. So if, you know, if

I don't find that I have a very loud voice, I

say what I think people might like to, you know,

learn about or hear about. And if at that point,

the people don't want to hear it anymore, or

they are they feel that they're not interested.

That's fine. I don't I don't particularly care.

I don't take it personally. There's there's a

lot of other ways of getting information out

there. What what fine what I find irritating

about it is how we are in this age of having

everything at your fingertips and You know people

still don't know some of the basic stuff, you

know, so Things about yeah like being part of

the the transformer subreddit or being part of

numerous Facebook groups and that kind of stuff

I don't generally interact on those platforms

very often, but I'm a part of them. So I get

all the posts and whatnot so I can see what's

happening. But I'll still see a lot of people

asking really stupid questions. And when I say

stupid, I don't mean stupid as in like stupid

Like yeah, Darrell you're in it all day every

day, you know a lot more than the average person

Yeah, I get it. But you know stupid as in like,

you know, when's the next movie coming out like

Some people yeah, it's easily Googleable like

yeah. Yeah That reminds me recently, I'm in a

television Facebook group for a specific television

show. It's the new Discovery Plus exclusive series,

American Detective with Lieutenant Joe Kenda.

So he had his original Homicide Hunter series

on Investigation Discovery and now he's doing

this whole American Detective thing where he's

the narrator of the show and they're looking

at other cases and whatever. And somebody in

the group said where can i watch the show. Yeah

i've made several posts in this group say like

i made like four or five posts initially when

it was announced that this show was gonna be

the new discover a new discovery plus app exclusive

thing. And everybody was like, you must work

for discovery. And I'm like, nope, I don't. I

just know all the information because I researched

it. I looked it up. I Googled it. I this, I that,

I do not work for discovery at all. But it's

like, how can you be a member of a group and

not know where to watch the television show that

you're supposedly a fan of? That's exactly what

I'm talking about. Like there's things out there

that instead of just throwing your answer out

to the ether and expecting somebody to answer

it for you, you know, type it into Google. There's

very few times when I will simply just ask a

group of people and it's only at the end of a,

of a very long Google foo that I have lost. And

I'm like, look, I can't find this, you know,

somebody helped me out here. Um, my, my Twitter

is You know, I'm famous on my Twitter for, uh,

you know, throwing out parts on there for, um,

cause I, I help out at a, at a local comic book

shop with their transformers, but I also get

thrown a lot of parts that are just kind of in

with the transformer stuff, which also they turn

out to be, you know, various power Rangers or,

or Sentai parts. And I'm like, I'm not into that.

So if I can't find it, easily with Google, then,

and Sentai and Power Rangers, and there's been,

you know, a billion of those things. I just,

I take a quick picture and I say, guys, help

me out here. You know, what the hell am I looking

at? Right? Yeah. So, not even Google knows the

answer to this. And so people will come back

at me and say, Hey, yeah, this part, this picture

is this thing. This one is this. And, you know,

and they're like, yeah, so, you know, that's

fantastic. You know, after, after you've done

the research and you're still coming up short,

then ask. But you know, the, the stupid questions,

my mother is a retired teacher and she used to

always say, you know, ask a stupid question,

get a stupid answer. And I, I love, I love that.

I love throwing stupid, stupid answers at people.

So yeah, this question is basically back in the

day. And when I say back in the day, I mean like

07, 08, 09, 10, you know, when I was first getting

on like TFW's boards kind of thing, like, you

know, every forum has some section introduce

yourself. Hi, I'm Mike and I like Transformers.

Hi, Mike. Welcome to the group. We're sorry you're

addicted to this addiction and drug of Trans...

Whatever. I'm just kidding. The thing of, oh,

introduce yourself. I'm Mike. I like this, this,

this, and this, and this. Somebody would come

back and say, oh, well, I like this, this, this,

and this and what you like is wrong. I'm just

like, no. That's the whole point of... voice

lost in the shuffle versus just shouting louder

because I'm the guy that would shout louder.

There's a certain, and I don't know if you're

a member of it and I'm not going to mention it,

but there is a certain Facebook group that a

show runner is in on Facebook. Some of the people

in there were just G -1ing the hell. Somebody

was excited for Kingdom Beast Megatron. And people

are like, why do we need Beast Wars? What the

hell? And I'm not even saying this because, you

know, you're the number one Beast Wars fan. I'm

just saying this because this is what was told

to me. But these people that was not you, these

people were like, why do we need Beast Wars?

Look, as much as the Bay movies have obviously

done billions and billions of dollars of help

to Transformers. If Beast Wars didn't come along,

say what you will about the CGI, we may not have

Transformers now, because it essentially saved

the franchise in 1996. That is what it is. But

it's this group of people that I'm just like...

I'm in the group. I don't pay attention to the

group because I didn't know if I pay attention

to the group I'm just gonna hence going back

to my thing of all generations, but I'm like,

oh god So that's where that kind of question

is of you know quiet because oh the stupidity

we can we can get into this a little bit because

I know exactly what you're talking about And

I can I can remain and you know, keep the person

anonymous even though I think you know, if you

know your salt Yeah, you know, you know who we're

talking about here because we on transmissions

interviewed this person Yes, you did and it was

an excellent interview and it has nothing to

it actually has nothing to do with him Not all

has nothing to do with him It's just the fact

that he is in this group where this happened

right and he's a wonderful guy and and he is

yeah response to all the criticism with a with

a lot of a lot of humor, but the The the criticism

surrounding the the Beast Wars Megatron in Kingdom

Had everything to do with the voice actor and

and yeah, and that was and and because we on

transmissions got early access to the show as

we yeah as we do and And when and we saw it before

we interviewed this gentleman, so And after our

interview with him, I told him, I said, look,

you're going to catch some serious heat for this

voice because it's a complete 180 from the original

Beast Wars voice. And he went into depth about,

you know, why it was this and, you know, why

they changed it. And they, he explained it really

well. And I said, he's like, and I said, I get

it. I get it. It makes sense to me. The majority

is not going to get it. They're going to expect

a deep voice, you know, with saying the catchphrases

and it's not going to be there and they're going

to hate you for it. And he took a lot of heat.

And the thing of it is, is even though I'm not

the biggest fan of the voice, I am a person like

I've been saying in this episode, I've been in

this game for a long time with the podcasting.

So. I understand that Hasbro, Netflix, whomever

it was, went non -union. I get it. So, like...

It's not the first time either, right? Yeah,

no, no, no. But it's definitely not the first

time they've done it. Yeah, and the thing is,

like, if you don't like something, that's fine.

You can express that fact of your opinion. That

you don't like it without go like this whole

thing of going after creators is just like, oh

my God, like leave them alone. They're there

to do a job. They're like, nobody. I. My mind

is blanking, but. Whomever was the original idea

person to come up with like you think a master's

university think of Mark Taylor You think of

Roger Sweet and whatever else may mark Taylor

rest in peace But like there are people I'm sure

that create, you know helped create for Transformers

to bring, you know Optimus Megatron to life whatever

you don't go to those people and say oh we hate

your creation and you don't go to the people

that are working on it who are just trying to

do the job like If Hasbro goes and lays out a

certain thing to whomever it is, okay, you need

to have Optimus here, Megatron here, Soundwave

can be in the background, Starscream can be up

in the sky, but you can't have insert whatever

that may be, you know, like whatever mandates

they dictate, like this is one thing we want

to stay away from. So as long as you stay away

from that, you can do whatever you want. Like

it's. work for hire. I mean, you know, it's not

like it's, I don't know. It just, it just, this

is one thing about the Transformers fandom that

still to this day pisses me off because I understand

about it. And most other people either don't

want to understand about it or just don't care

and would rather go after, you know, insert name

here because that's what I was trying to say

about with arguing with, with people on the internet.

It's, it's your, We, because we are in it and

we're in it up to our necks, we understand a

great deal about the inner workings of what goes

on with many of the aspects. So when somebody

seemingly has an outrageous anger towards something,

it's like shouting to the void because they don't

want to understand because they're angry about

something. And I, I get their anger, but there

are, there are 15 steps that took to making the

decision that was made. And they just, they only

see, you know, the one decision, you know? Yeah,

yeah, absolutely. It's, it's just crazy. And

it makes me at times. This is why, even though

I say I'm in that group, but I don't interact

with that group. Yeah. Nuts. You know what I

mean? Like, like, you know, if I go in there

right now, if I had all of my trends, the transformers,

funko pops that I have, if I have all of them

right here on my desk, I take a picture, I go

in that group and I say, I have been a transformers

fan since I was four years old in 1984. Right

now the funko pop transformers are my favorite

part of the franchise. And I post that picture.

Somebody's going to come back and say, Oh, funko

pops. They suck. You know, and I was like, really?

Seriously? Like I'm telling you why I enjoy it.

And then you're going to insult the fact that

because you don't like Funko, whatever. And I

have my own problems with Funko, right? NFT bullshit.

Whatever. Anyway, I'm not what I'm gonna I would

argue with you on on Funko is being being a good

thing right now because of the NFT bullshit.

I agree. I'm in agreement. The whole, and we've

already talked about this on the last episode

of the podcast, but up until the NFT stuff, I

was a Funko fan. I don't know. Anyway, what is

your personal Transformers anthem song? These

are only examples. You do not have to choose

these obviously. Stan Bush, The Touch, Dare,

et cetera. But if there is another piece of Transformers

music that you like the best, what is it and

why? Oh, I gotta get the name right here. Give

me a second. Instruments of Destruction. That

I, I just, I fucking rock out to that one anytime

I can, right? The Decepticons are breaking into

the shuttle and they're just, they're murdering

all the Autobots, right? It's a traumatic memory

for me, but that song just fucking rocks. Yeah,

it does. It's a damn shame kick ass got the shaft

that they did. There's an episode of Chris Jericho's

Talkin' Jericho podcast where he talks to the

people from Kick -Ax and they tell the story

of why they were renamed Spectre General for

the soundtrack and all that. Well, instruments

of destruction is by NRG, whoever they the hell

are. The whole freaking album is made up of,

you know, we're named this, but we're really

this. Yeah, yeah. I'm losing it, folks. I would

have had to look it up too. How often do you

go back and re -watch any of the Transformers

cartoons? I would say pretty often. I generally

try and make a A rewatch of the 86 movie once

a year Especially since they they seem to rerelease

it every fucking year so so you've got an excuse

to watch it again, but yeah, I I just watched

just because it was my daughter is almost 13

and I I got she's really into Naruto And so so

I was like, you know, there's a Transformers

are basically anime, right? She's like, Oh, yeah,

it's like, he said, Come here and watch, watch

this one. This one's from Japan. And we watched

an episode out of Masterforce. So we sat down

and watch that. So that was fun. So yeah, every

day, there's a bunch. I mean, being on the podcast,

we, if there's no comic to do, then it's then

it's up to me to, to do a review on an episode.

So yeah, we're always we're always watching something.

We all love Transformers comics, which incarnation

do you love and why? The Transformers comics

are great and the current incarnation, you know,

the current ongoing has has got some real problems

the Yeah, the let's see I was I was really hardcore

in it for more than meets the eye Yeah. For that

first, that first run, like first volume of more

than meets the eye from like one to I'd say maybe,

maybe 35 or so. Yeah. For that first 35 issues

of more than meets the eye, I was eager, like

really eager to get the book every week. And,

and once like, I can remember Picking up it might

have been issue twenty four some shit like that

like it was around that time. As soon as i got

home from the comic book store i sat down on

the couch and start reading it and i was that

i was that ready to read the book i needed to

have it and it was just that's those that was

that was about as as excited as i've ever been

for transformers comics. Uh, the art was fantastic.

Alex Milne's art is just top tier. It, it boggles

my mind that he does not get constant work. You

know, he's just a guy. He's, he's a, you know,

he's a, he's a great guy, but his art, he's,

you know, he's like a fricking, he's, he's like

the Transformers version of Todd McFarlane. Like

the guy's detail work is insane. Like I don't

understand it. It, it hurts my brain to think

that he doesn't do more comics work, you know?

His, his, his details are like crazy good and

he just doesn't get the work. I don't fucking

get it. Like do people not like well -drawn comics?

I, I don't, I don't understand. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Comics are, I, you know, I, like we said at the

beginning of this, I knew nothing of. Marvel

Dreamwave any of that I was all in it for the

animation I was all in it for the toys I was

all in it for that and then Ender who used to

be on I don't know if he's still on I don't think

he is but he used to be on Radio Free Cybertron

with Brian Kilby and them He and I actually Met

up at a Transformers. I think it was the Because

they've done two in theater viewings of the movie.

It was the 25th and then, yeah, so it was the

25th anniversary viewing and he and I met up

and Ender has this, I love that guy, he has this

Masters of the Universe Classics rant from like

2009, 2010 that I have the clip of and it's just

an amazing piece of work. And it's just one of

those things where he... told me something about

shockwave and shadow play and all that and i'm

just like wait what and i just immediately had

to run to more than meets the eye i was not so

thrilled with the fact that robots in disguise

was. Starscream as the president that was a little

weird at first but i came or i came around to

it. Yeah the i mean the books concurrently were

interesting. the political thriller over on Robots

in Disguise was good, but More Than Meets the

Eye was really the space opera that we were all

looking for. I really don't think James Roberts

stuck the landing. I feel that it really faltered

at the end there. Um, Scorpionoc carrying a baby

in his chest is just, I was, I was messed up.

Like it was, it was really a really messy way

to have it go. But, uh, yeah, I mean that, that

first little bit, like the DJ D those were amazing

characters. Amazing. And, uh, yeah, I was, I

was there for all of that. That was fantastic.

And we didn't, you know, say what you will about,

I mean, G1 was written at a different time. It

was written for, you know, yes, there were multi

-part episodes at times, but the G1 cartoon is

essentially episodic. It's not continuity driven

kind of thing. Yeah. You know, so we didn't really

get to, we got like three different origins for

various characters or we got this origin for

this care, whatever. So when Roberts when, when

the meets the eye hit 28 and it was like Megatron,

the Autobot. Hmm. What's going on here? I'm here.

Like the, you know, you always hear about the

trial of Megatron. I'm like, okay, what are they

going to do? And I'm reading that, reading that,

reading that. And then obviously he goes and

becomes the co -leader of the lost light with

Rodimus. And I'm just like Megatron Rodimus.

I mean, everyone says he, you know, that. Rodimus

made megatron shoot optimus and that's not what

happened. It was it was a really interesting

story line i thought it was really good the redemption

of megatron was really good there was just some

really great stuff in that in that more than

meets the eye book and. You know, we, we often

get asked on the podcast, you know, by people

wanting to start reading Transformers comics

and we'll, we'll take them all the way back to

a death of Optimus Prime and say, start here.

And then, um, it's your choice whether you want

to read both, but if you only can read one more

than meets the eye is where you go. Yeah. So

that's how it was explained to me. It was you

start at the. I'm going to say it this way because

it's the only way that I can make the reference.

You started the Robert Frost, Death of Optimus

Prime, and then two roads in a wood diverge.

You can go down one, you can go down the other,

or you can split yourself in half and go down

both. I went all in and 13x, 13, 15, however

many years, IDW. Damn good I mean say would you

know I still have to catch up with the current

but that that 2 .0. Was a damn good 13 year run

even if at the end they didn't really stick the

landing. But I mean I said this last time on

the on the on the podcast I said you know. IDW

didn't just bring in Unicron after like year

five they waited thirteen years I mean if you're

gonna bring in Unicron at least wait until it's.

You know enough time where you faced everything

else and let's face it those characters in both

those books basically faced every other thing

that they could have before they had to go up

against you. Yeah man those are those are some

big enemies to at the end just and it was again

books they were drawn by Alex right and they

were just they looked fantastic so. Yeah absolutely.

Alright, you mentioned it earlier, but how big

is your Transformers toy collection? Quite big.

Like I mentioned, I'm working on over 300 G1s

just by themselves. 400 or so figures. Yeah.

So I'm in the, I'm in the, the, the late sixes,

early seven hundreds. Wow. Figures. Yeah. Very

cool. Very cool. The, the, the G ones are, you

know, they're, they're small by comparison, you

know, they're, they're. Oh yeah. I have very

few of them in boxes. And then the figures themselves

are quite tiny. So they take up very little space.

I mean, I was. I was in, well, it was a few years

later. So yeah, it was 88 or 89. So it was about,

about three or four years after the movie. And,

uh, I had finally gotten Rodimus Prime. Never

had a hot rod as a kid, but I got a Rodimus Prime.

And even though I was nine years old and, you

know, you know, short night, most nine year olds

are on average. kind of thing, you know, there's

still little kids and not, they haven't hit that

girl's spurt yet or anything. And I'm just like,

this toy is tiny, but at least it fits in my

hand a little better than some of the, and just,

you know, that, that, that G1 classic Rodimus

is just that original one. Yeah. Hence why I'm,

I am such a proponent of, of commander class

kingdom, because, oh my God, if I had had commander

class Rodimus, 40 years ago, I would have been

so happy. Oh, man. People don't understand how

as well as the toy production was back then on

certain things. Like you said, they were kind

of small. They weren't so big. And Commander

Class Rodimus is kind of big compared to his

original. Yeah, absolutely. And that old G1 Rodimus,

I mean, you know. There were really good toys

in G1, and then there were duds. And that Rodimus

is a bit of a dud. There's not a whole heck of

a lot to him. But when you're a kid, you really

don't care. You want something that transforms,

and it represents the character you see on screen.

And that was what it did. It did it very well.

And it had its own little gimmick, and it did

it well as well. But yeah. Absolutely. How do

you feel about non -transforming Transformers

like Funko Pops? Well, I mean, I am not a huge

Funko Pop fan, but you know, I can't say I dislike

them, but they don't have a place in my collection.

I do have a couple of those flame toys model

kits that I've put together. And obviously they

don't transform, but they are, you know, action

figures. So there's something. But, uh, but yeah,

there's, there's a, you know, I do have a couple

of things kicking around that are, you know,

they're okay. But for, you know, in general,

my transformers need to transform. Yeah. And,

uh, I've said this before, one of the only reasons

why. My main reason, and I've said this repeatedly

on this show and other shows, my main reason

for liking Funko at this point in my life is

they are a company that can make characters that

nobody, like you're not going to get McDonald's

characters the way that they've done the McDonald's

pops kind of thing. So that's one of the reasons

why. And then they just had to go and release

Transformers. And I'm like, ooh, Megatron with

his energy maze, Optimus with his energy axe.

I can recreate that. See, ooh, that's nice. Obviously

now, not so much because of this. Ladies and

gentlemen, if you listened to the last episode

of All Things Transformers, or if you listen

to episode 147 of Toycast, you will hear my rage,

full on rage about the whole Funko X Transformers

NFT thing. I don't want to drag this episode

down with that crap. What is the one? So I have

to preface this question. The house is on fire,

but everybody's safe. Kids are safe. Wife is

safe. You're safe. Everybody's safe. Everybody

gets out. What's the one Transformers toy you

could not live without and you'd have to run

back in and save? Well, I think it should be

known at this point that it's going to be my

Teco tank. That's true. You know what? That's

a good question. For a long time, it used to

be my MP10, because I just love that thing. But

at this point, I might grab my old studio cell,

that Unicron. It's beautiful. It's a beautiful

figure. I love the way that it looks. You know,

it's not too big. There's not too much kibble

on it. And you know, it's got a light up head

and and then I made a modification to give it

some sound effects. So, yeah, what the hell?

You know, it's a it's a really awesome figure

now. Very cool. Very cool. What is the most money

you spent on a Transformers toy or a Transformers

toy item? Oh. This is you don't you don't know

who my wife is, right? You're not going to send

this to her. All right, so I'm safe Yeah, I've

It's it's funny cuz I don't I don't know if I've

gone I don't know if I've gone much past 400

but I've probably come close a bunch of times,

so I'd probably say let's go with 400 Yeah. Yeah,

let's say 400. What was it that cost that much?

Well, I have a number of third party items that

get up there. Okay. I mean, I'm looking around

here. Yeah. I consider my masterpiece Star Saber.

Well, it's got Victory Saber with the KFC Simba

added on. That was easily $400. Yeah. Wow. I

consider, because you can't have one without

the other at this point. Yeah. I've got a bunch

of figures that are right near there. It's funny

because you look around and I really don't have

any G1s that get up there. That question is more

of a single item purchase kind of thing, but

obviously any botcon set is going to run you

a certain amount of money on the aftermarket.

I remember back in 2008, spending $800 on the

entirety of the 2008 BotCon set, the original

shattered glass set, with all the bells and whistles

and extras and whatever. Do you have a...? I

think I've probably just gotten lucky with what

I've bought. I have probably about 30 boxed G1s.

but I've bought them at various points in my

collecting that they didn't cost me a lot. I

was given a boxed Canadian Ultra Magnus. I found

a Canadian slag at a, you know, at a store that

was priced like a regular slag. So, you know,

yoink. You know, you get you get lucky, right?

Like these kind of things, you just, you know,

I'm not spending the money that they're worth.

You just kind of get you get lucky. So you just

you just have to be ready to purchase when, you

know, the opportunity arises. Right. Yeah, absolutely.

Do you have a my parents got rid of my toys story?

I don't remember it. I just know that at some

point they were all gone. I do recall for probably

about 1990 when I was 10 to about 1998, I lived

in the country relative to where I am now. And

we had a picnic table outside and I don't recall

what year it was. It was probably between 91

and 90. four. So I was sitting outside on the

picnic table and I had my G one, which would

have been original, not any re re issues or anything

at the time. So a G one ultra Magnus cab and

my G one wheel jack. And I was painting them

with acrylic paint, uh, you know, and I just,

that's what I wanted to do. So I was doing it

and Shortly after that, they were gone. It was

just, you know, Darrell doesn't want to, you

know, play with his toys anymore. He's just going

to paint them. So, you know, I wanted my my Ultra

Magnus to be Optimus Prime. So I painted him

as Optimus Prime. It was horrendous. And, you

know, so, you know, after that point, the box

of Transformers became, you know, it went somewhere.

Wow. Well, hey, you know, you were an early customizer.

That's me. I do remember very similarly to that.

I tried to build Autobot Spike out of my transformers.

So I was disassembling them and trying to put

them back together in a configuration that would

become Autobot Spike. And funnily enough, it

didn't work. And a number of screws fell down

between the boards on the picnic table into the

grass, and I never found them. Oh no. Yeah, once

weapons and accessories fall into the grass in

the 80s, folks, you were never going to get them

back unless you saw exactly where they fell.

If you could voice any Transformers character,

who would it be and why? Oh, man. I mean, anybody

that's, you know, our generation has probably

seen the 86 movie enough to know the entire script,

you know, front to back. So probably somebody

from that movie. Man, that's a good question.

I love, you know what? I love Unicron's lines

in that movie. You know, I don't think I have

the cadence of Orson Welles, but he's just he's

he's got some fucking good lines. So yeah, he

does. You know, and his interaction with Megatron

at that point when he's, you know, you know,

kind of converting him to Galvatron are just

those are some just kick ass lines. So yeah,

I would go with Unicron. Wow, very cool. Very

cool. Who is your favorite? I say, I'm going

to say actor because I don't want us, you know,

actors or actors, whether it's voice or what,

who is your favorite Transformers actor? But

obviously it really means voices and things like

that. Sure. Yeah. Um, I mean, I think it's, I'd

like to, I'd like to say Frank Welker. He's just,

he's the king. You know, I missed out on an opportunity

to meet him at a TF con one year. And, uh, you

know, I kind of regret it now. I want, I really

hope I get an opportunity again, but, you know,

who knows in this, uh, in this post COVID world,

I, uh, I really hope that we, uh, we do get the

chance, uh, and that he does come back to, to

conventions, but the guy's the king. He's the

absolute fucking goat. And, you know, I just,

uh, you know, Peter Collins, no slouch, but,

uh, The season one of Transformers Generation

One, he voiced every single Decepticon except

Starscream and Thundercracker, I think. So I

think it was everybody else except for those

two. It was ridiculous. And it didn't get any

less. He just kept going. Yeah, I mean, well,

I mean, Frank Walker's a machine. I mean, yeah,

you know, he can sit here and talk about, you

know, talk his Megachon, you know, scolding Starscream

while making the sound engineer think there are

crickets in the corner of the room. So, you know,

he is who he is. All right. This cannot be anything

that has already been made. This cannot be anything

that has already been announced that is going

to be made. But what is your dream masterpiece

figure? Oh, it's another good one. This is a

question we ask on our annual survey. So every

single year, every single year we've asked it

for eight years and every single year the same

answer wins. It's jazz Everyone wants a masterpiece

jazz. I don't understand why there hasn't been

one yet It's licensing. It's all it's gotta be.

Yeah Yeah, it's always got to be licensing the

the second place answer to that is Galvatron.

So Galvatron there is no fucking excuse They

just haven't done it they just haven't done it

but honestly we now have four different Kingdom

versions of Galvatron, whether you want the original

toy, whether you want what I want, which is the

reformatted one, because I love that they did

that. That reformatted Kingdom Galvatron is amazing.

And now we have both the splotchy paint version

original one and the clean version that's coming

with Laser Optimus Prime. So good. I wonder who

would I want as a masterpiece? I think so. I

mean, jazz wins by popular vote and he's a good

one. But could I can I mean, Takara is doing

Raiden. Can i can i say g one devestator can

i go with that one to back you know that's six

figure is one character yeah i mean if they ever

do oh man that mess i can only imagine the price

tag on that thing. If they ever did a masterpiece

devestator that actually comes apart into six

masterpiece figures yeah oh wow that would be

amazing. That would be absolutely awesome. All

right. Where do you live? No, that's not the

question. Edit. Where do you land on the rumble

is blue, frenzy is red, rumble is red, frenzy

is blue debate? I know that the majority is Rumble

is red just because of the you know the way that

it kind of sourced out and just it was a simply

a mistake that rumble ended up blue in the g1

cartoon. So i've been trying in my own head to

change it but like you know we discussed. I grew

up on the cartoon. And that's just been the way

it has sat in my head for 40 fucking years. So

it's changing this headcanon of mine. So if I

were to really sit down and think about it, I

don't care. It doesn't matter. Yeah, in the long

run, it doesn't matter. But the correct answer

is rumble is purple and frenzy is black. End

of story. You go to the cartoon. That's right.

That's the only place you can... I go to the

cartoon. Yeah, absolutely. Because honestly,

that was the most... You look at all the cassettes.

Ravage is interesting. Laserbeak is interesting.

Buzzsaw is interesting. Ratbat is probably one

of the most interesting. And then you have Frenzy

and Rumble who are essentially repaints of each

other or whatever you want to say about it. But,

you know... Swap the name swap the characters

swap the colors whatever honestly what you saw

on that television as a child is what you're

going to want. Every time somebody does like

a custom rumble and frenzy and they showed off

with whatever sound wave whether it's original

g1 whether it's the war for cybertron when they

released or whatever it's like they're always

purple and black because those are the colors

we saw. Every piece of visual media with the

transformers in the eighties If you could create

any Transformers fiction toy cartoon comic etc.

What would it be and what story would you want

to tell with it? Oh I have an answer for this

but it's a movie Okay, because we've talked on

this on transmissions about the movies at length

and As it goes on, it seems like they just produce

trilogies, as evident by the most recent movie

news anyway. It seems like this new one's going

to be the first part of a trilogy. My idea, and

it's been this one for years, and you can find

it in the archives of the transmission show,

is that it's loosely based on the All Hail Megatron

comic book series. So that 12 issue. turned into

16 -issue miniseries, is that the Decepticons

come to Earth in search of energy or whatever

the hell. It's not set in stone, but they come

to Earth looking for something. And they wreak

havoc when they get here, tearing shit up, burning

down cities, just leveling the place. And essentially,

the first movie ends. And the Autobots are just

arriving at the end of the at the end of the

first movie. So the first movie is almost all

Decepticons, right? And their interactions with,

you know, the people there, you meet your human

component. And they're, they're trying to, it's

it's almost like, you know, it's almost like

trying to think of the I like an alien movie

or something like that that i could i could compare

to but essentially the humans are trying to hide

from the decepticons and then you get the decepticons

point of view where they're trying to find the

what they're finding and they're just kinda you

know is it underneath you know. Is it behind

the dam? Well, I don't know blow the dam up and

they just blow the dam up and then they The water

washes away the city or whatever and you know,

they don't give a shit. Why the hell do they

care, right? So they're just blowing shit up

and and and who cares about the humans? So, you

know by the end of the movie the Autobots have

figured out where the Decepticons are and then

they arrive and start You know to start taking

them out Or trying to take them out and then

that's the end of the first movie second movie

is essentially an all -out fucking war Right

and earth is just the battlefield and it's just

uh action from start to finish you get the human

Um, the human characters are are just trying

to stay out of the way Right? You can have some,

you know, some kind of like B or C plot that

would, you know, kind of involve them trying

to get out of the way, get to a different continent

or country or something like that, that, you

know, but the battle or the war is global, right?

And essentially that movie ends with, you know,

the Autobots and the Decepticons still fighting.

But the third movie is where the Autobots take

it back. and and really beat the Decepticons

back. So it's it's a full trilogy and and you

really do need all three movies for it. But by

the end of the fifth or the third movie, it's

the Autobots have have finally won the day. There

is some serious casualties on their side as well.

You know, maybe Optimus is dead. He always has

to die. Right. So he's you know, he's dead. You

know, Rodimus has taken over. Whatever you know

but you know there's you know there's some there's

some nods in there too but that's that's the

idea that i've had for a for a for a series or

are some kind of movies be is just have them

fight. You know there are there a warring you

know race and they're just you know you know

and earth is just the battlefield yeah i mean

the thing is is you have. In almost forty years

now we have stories that show before the war

in the amazing we written by the late great david

wise and war don and g one and you have stories

that are like after the war like with the idw

two point o comics but we don't actually see.

The actual freaking war. Like if they are two

warring factions, you'd think that somebody would

want to show the actual war. And maybe it's just

because Hasbro wants everybody to follow formula

of the Decepticons attack the Autobots. They

have a fight on Cybertron. The Decepticons escape

to earth. The Autobots have to follow them. Blah,

blah, blah, blah, blah. Well, we now live in

an age where animation, live action, whatever

you want to use with it, the technology is there.

You don't have to just go by the gold standards

or the old standards of the story formula being,

oh, well, we have to do this, this, this, and

this, and this. I don't know. Yeah. I mean, one

of the crutches of live action is it's expensive

to make you know, models to put on the screen.

So doing this, you know, a movie in animated,

you know, which is what they're going to do in

2024 is it opens it up to having that much more

characters in the movie. So, you know, if you

want to have a really big cast and a whole bunch

of characters, you're going to have to go animated.

Right? You can't have a cast of 40 and be CGI'd

like it is. You're only going to have like seven

or eight characters like the live actions have

been because it's expensive. It's really expensive

to do. Yeah, absolutely. All right. Last question.

What is the one piece of advice that you would

give Transformers fandom and the Transformers

collectors in general? Be patient. This is, I

see people online all the time. You know, for

example, here we are. It's the beginning or almost,

I guess it's almost the middle of March, 2022.

And I see people online saying, finally, I found

Legacy Blaster. Like, finally. Like, where, what

are you talking about? The thing's hardly been

released yet. You know, like, what do you, like,

patience people, like the things, things. come

out in time, you know? Yeah. And legacy blaster

is just kingdom blaster with a different box.

Right. And, and, and kingdom blaster really didn't

get a wide release. So, you know, so yeah. So

if you didn't find kingdom blaster got legacy

blaster and then, but that kind of, those kinds

of things happen all the time. So, you know,

I see, finally I found, you know, Primal or something

like that and he just they the figures just hit

the shelves, right? So, yeah, you know I'm like

patience if you're if you're you're going for

something if you're looking for something patience

it just you know and and I I see it happening

all the time and and You and I will and we know

because we've been in this forever like a new

a new toy line You know wave one sits around

for ever. It's always, always, always on the

shelves. So people will say, oh, I've pre -ordered

wave one. I'm like, why? Why have you done that?

You know, it's gonna be around. It's gonna be

in the stores. If you don't get it on day one,

oh well, you'll find it on clearance because

it'll be there, right? It's always there and

the stuff in it will be you know repacked input

into other waves it always is there's wave one

is always sitting around so patients and if you

don't get something like here we are in in starting

legacy so if you miss stuff in kingdom or earth

rise or siege now look for it you know online

because if you're trying to find that stuff you

know at the time and you're paying crazy prices

to get it at you know while the kingdom show

is on or while you know those things are brand

new in the stores you're gonna play pay top dollar

but if you go to a convention like if i go to

you know tfcon la this weekend it's you know

if and i want to find something from siege it's

dirt cheap dirt cheap guaranteed the people don't

want it anymore it's old stock so if you can

be patient you're always going to get deals and

you you can't be a collector of and a mass and

a huge collection of figures if that's what you

want to do right if you are spending top dollar

all the time you will go broke right it's just

it's impossible the the math doesn't work So

you have to, you have to pick your battles and,

and, you know, you have to be smart. Absolutely.

Well, this has been a blast. We're going to take

a quick break. You're going to hear some ads

and some other stuff and we'll come back to close

the show after this. Hello, all sentient beings.

lot of time by just going through that. I don't

recommend it But it's you know, there is you

could start any episode is a good one to start

on We did just I'll plug these because they're

fun. I really like those we did just record the

episodes with the survey results of 2021 and

those are That's a survey that we do complete

and send out to the fandom every single year

and then we record the results and put them up

as a show so each show had a I think it was 475

and 275 respectively for the toy show and the

media show and then each one of those episodes

had the results of those surveys. So we asked

the fandom to tell us what they thought the best

parts of 2021 were, Transformers -wise, and we

get some really great answers, and it's always

fun to hear. Neither of us on the show actually

participate. We just let the fandom tell us what

they think is the best. And it's always fun to

hear what the fandom likes and dislikes from

the brand. So yeah, so transmissionspodcast .com
