so much more. It's all inside the pull bag here
on the GeekCast Radio Network. So, without further
ado, it's time to talk about the comics we're
reading right now, here inside the pull bag.
Hello and welcome to The Pull Bag. This is episode
426. That's right, folks, 426 episodes of The
Pull Bag. It is the first week in the month of
September 2021. And I am serving you this amazing
guest host on a platter that is silver side up.
It is JT from Saskatoon. Hello. Hello. Would
I ever tell you about how you remind me of uh
-huh? Yes, I am a leader of men and oh I did
wake up this morning. I wasn't woke up this morning,
but I did wake up this morning woke in quotation
anyway We are here in scooby -dont September
because I don't know if we're gonna continue
with the scooby -doo team up series after this
episode And we're going to be talking about volumes
3 and 4, which include a bunch of stories, folks.
Bunch of stories. Funny how that happens with
a trade collection of a comic book series. Well,
yes, no, I understand that. But basically, the
stories we have in here. are Don't Be a Stranger,
Wet n' Wild, The Ghost of Gorilla City, Simply
Marvelous, Fly By Night, and A Dog Gone Crisis.
Yes. Where do you want to start with this? Because
I really don't want to be here for... I'm going
to say this. Two things. One, we did the first
two volumes, and I did enjoy reading these trades.
gosh darn crime that if Warner Brothers DC can
do Batman the Brave and the Bold, which is a
retread of the classic DC comic series where
every issue Batman teams up with a different
superhero to stop some sort of supervillainous
shenanigans, how is this not an animated series?
Yeah. Like, come on, like this for the first
story alone in volume three, folks. Involves
also us a part two is if you have access to the
classic Like the first two or three volumes of
the classic DC series who's who? It might be
preferable to have that on hand so you can flip
through that to get the lowdown and so because
that's one of the me being a an old fan of old
-school DC lore Right, you know back when they
treated them seriously enough but not so serious
that we got the 90s sort of DC stories where
everything had to be grim dark because I mean
the first story is don't be a stranger and it
involves the phantom stranger who I heard Kevin
Conroy's voice because of how he portrayed him
in Brave and the Bold coming to Scooby and the
gang to like all these other ghost superheroes
are going are going missing and then we would
have got like Michael Rosenbaum like Lex Luthor
or Smallville's Lex Luthor voicing Deadman and
you know, it's just them they go to this small
town and it's just as who's who of classic Silver
Age DC Comics characters. I mean you got the
Grim Ghost who's like this ghostly prince who
lived in a painting who would possess his descendant
and go out and fight supernatural evil. You have
Kid Eternity. Mr. Keeper was this kid that you
know, he died after a Nazi attack Nazis attacked
him and his grandpa in a fishing boat and they
both went to heaven but the kid was like Like
just so he was so pure that God sends him back
with the ability to call forth Ghostly visages
of characters from history and from fiction to
fight evil And then you got like the, like I
said, the Spectre shows up. And my favorite part
of this story is the Spectre is losing energy
because he's not, he's been physically separated
from his mortal form of Jim Corrigan. So he possesses
Scooby -Doo and all that. You know, I am the
specter, God's right -hand, it's, I am regent,
I am the right! All I can hear is Frank Welker
doing Scooby -Doo, and it's fucking awesome.
Yeah, I hear Don Messick. Sorry, Don Messick.
I mean, Frank's doing it now, but yeah. Yeah,
I mean, one of my favorite scenes is the spook,
who's not the spook that Scooby and the gang...
Tussled with he gets dogpiled by two of my favorite
DC ghostly characters One is a gentleman Jim
Craddock the gentleman ghost the other is Jeb
Stuart now for Characters are for people that
don't know Jeb Stuart was a ghostly character
from the title of the haunted tank Where Jeb
Stuart who was a Confederate general and fought
against the north and nowhere? We're not coming
down in either side of that fight folks I'm just
saying he was a Confederate general who in order
to earn his way into heaven was Gone through
the centuries guarding his descendants and one
of him his namesake was the leader of this tank
crew in World War two Who they all thought he
was crazy, but damn the advice he got from his
ghostly great -grandfather Helped them get through
the war and eventually some of the other characters
in the crew could see the ghost as well. And
it's just, like I said, it's just Silver Age
grabbing. This is the first story in the volume,
folks. Yeah. It's the first story in the volume,
and it's the first story that kind of really
feels like a holiday tale because it does happen
on Halloween. So I like that. I love the art.
Braswell's art is amazing. Dario is an amazing
artist. I love the colors. I'm just not... And
I know this is single -minded of me, folks. Trust
me, I get it. If it's not Batman, if it's not,
you know, Nightwing or Batgirl or something to
do... in that. I enjoyed reading this. I thought
it was funny. I love that dead man has to possess
everybody. One of the first things I remember
reading this is he possesses Shaggy, and he says,
I'm not hungry. Who are you? Oh, it's definitely
not Shaggy. Yeah, it's definitely not Shaggy,
obviously. I was going to say, or where they
find the spirit's body, and he separates from
Scooby. Far past time, I returned to my own human
host, but why do I have a sudden craving for
Scooby Snacks? I mean, hey, everybody eats Scooby
Snacks, even the humans do in this, in the Scooby
Doo universe, so I... I don't know, I prefer
to think of Scooby Snacks as more of like animal
crackers and not actual dog biscuits. Well...
It's either like what they say in the movie.
It's all natural made from vegetables cuz you
know cuz shaggy also if they got the movie cast
to voice this series and It would have been fun
to have Freddie Prinze jr. Double t double timing
it in the some of these scenes where he has to
voice Fred and Daphne when the spirit possesses
when the Death Band possesses Daphne, because
it goes back to the original Scooby -Doo film
by James Gunn, and anyone that doesn't love that
film doesn't have an ounce of joy in their soul.
I mean, come on, part of the villains gang was
Sugar Ray, and I always laugh like a kid when
I watch that scene. You're talking about the,
wait. The original movie. The live -action movie.
Yeah, like Freddie Prinze jr. Is Fred Sarah Michelle
Geller is Daphne the only voice for me in my
mind for Velma Linda Cardellini because I love
Kate Magucci and what she's done. She's done
very fine work She's one of my favorite voices
on the news DuckTales, but I love the gang from
the movie. Yeah Yeah, I mean it's fun. It's interesting
and it's it's one of those things where like
I said earlier It's a nice Halloween tale. It's
a it's a interesting thing that oh, they're just
you know hanging out at home and and giving out
candy and I Thought that was really really cool
Yeah Anything else you want to say about don't
be a stranger? It's Pro honestly, it's probably
my between these two volumes. It's probably my
favorite my favorite team up because just all
like the Easter eggs and callbacks and stuff
like that and Not that any of these stories really
good like the next one wet and wild where they
team up with it's like filmation era Aquaman
and Mara you know to fight black man to chicanery
my favorite callback in there was Where Fred
yells outrageous and mirrors like don't least
don't do that. Don't do that Yeah, and all I
could hear was, you know, cut was it Kevin Michael
Richardson? That did on women. No, it's head
begin Lee Ted Mc. Well, no Ted McGinley Did like
that episode with no, it was it was DiMaggio.
It was Jefferson Darcy from married with children.
He did like that one episode with the Fonz's
ambush book Yeah, just the way he's like outrageous
and I was just like I fucking love that don't
do that and Also this entire both volumes. There's
several times where Fred's Fred's Fred's got
a kink like he's He's got an obsession. He likes
Ripping masks off of people even when they're
like, you know 20 ,000 leagues under the sea
and black mantis head would go squish Yes, like
dude give it up good. It's gonna go splat. Yes
What I find interesting about this is number
one I like the callback to the old super friends
Aquaman thing because as a kid as a kid not now
I I thought it was so cool that Aquaman could
do telepathy with fish. And I thought the effect
of him doing that with the sound, and I'll put
it in here somewhere, with the sound and the
circular waves on the cartoon, I thought that
was so cool. And here I found it was cool, too.
At the same time, this entire story, I'm like...
uh wears his beard wears his hook hand justice
league did this better because if you look at
this story now i'm not saying did it better in
the sense of the writing this writing here is
fine sholey fish's writing is great but this
is the exact same story to me as uh the the enemy
below the two -parter in justice league where
it was Orm who was going to take over and blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah. I don't know. I just
I don't see that at all, Mike. I have to disagree
with you on that. If anything, you know, this
is like standard because I still enjoy watching
the filmation DC comic series, you know, but.
And maybe it's just my love of the DC animated
movie universe that concluded with Apocalypse
War. When I see Ocean Master in this costume,
I hear Sam Witwer's voice. Listeners might know
him more as Darth Maul in the Clone Wars and
Rebels and Bad Batch animated series. He just
has this great voice like he just went and ate
every inch of scenery in the Throne of Atlantis
movie and just Wonderfully over the top and I
just hear that voice coming out of Ocean Master
here versus Kevin Michael Richardson coming out
of Black Mantic is How can you not love the man?
Yeah, exactly My favorite part here is probably
where Mira is like, no, no, no, no, no. This
one's mine. And she just one -shots Ocean Master
while he's trying to run away. Yep. And Aquaman's
like, see? I told you it was better if only I
was chasing you. And it's just kind of sad. How
dumb are Scooby and Shaggy? They're trying to
eat this royal feast. There's like, you can't
eat with a scuba mask. And he's like, no! Yeah
that I I normally don't when I read comics I
obviously read them for the story and then when
we do the podcast episodes folks I usually look
through to see if I notice any art details you've
heard all that in the last eight years but especially
last month with turtles where I might have seen
something in the IDW turtles book and I pointed
it out to Joe who might have missed it And I
looked through this entire story, not that I
think Dario would ever not do this, but sometimes
mistakes happen. I looked through this entire
story to make sure that the mystery gang all
was always wearing their scuba masks. Because...
Edit point. because I was like, oh boy, how are
they gonna breathe underwater? Oh, right, the
scuba masks. What if they were ever drawn without
them on? It's like, oh, not good. But yeah, the
whole food thing, that was funny. And I mean,
there's, you know, you got classic like Silver
Age, Aqualad, Aquagirl, this one dude with the...
the blue shirt and the red pants with the Heihachi
hair from Tekken. I mean, that's probably Volko.
Yeah. He's a character. And you got Tusky from
the Aquaman cartoon just coming up and just like,
pew, pew, pew. You know, I know that is Tusky.
And I remember him. When I saw that, I'm like,
wait a minute. What is Chum Lee doing down here?
And where is Tennessee Tuxedo? Just when I first
saw the walrus I'm like waiting for that or waiting
for The 51st dates guy to show up yeah Yeah,
I mean who knew Shaggy could swim as fast as
Aquaman by the end of the story Well, I mean
hey, you know it is food like oh my god. I can't
eat. I'm out of here. Bye Yeah, now the the third
story with the flash Which was called the ghost
it goes to real city. Yeah Probably the one as
much as I again, I'm nothing You know by now.
I love the lore and the callbacks. I Felt a little
disappointed by the story because it starts with
Scooby and the gang kind of helping the flash
out Against mirror master and I was like come
on scoop the flash in the scooby gang versus
the rogues Like, you know Like captain boomerangs
gonna like throws a boomerang at Velma and shake
his scoop. It's covered in scooby stags I wrote
it Reggie, you know something like that instead
and again, it's not a bad story it's just that's
what I was hoping for and said we go to Gorilla
City and I think they kind of Overuse the joke
of talking gorillas a little bit. Yeah. Yeah
they did and It's not that like they use gorilla
grot and he's in this story But he's not the
villain and I think the weakest part of this
story was them just creating another character
who's using Gorilla City technology to try and
scare people out and it's he's a crooked real
estate developer and I was like Really? Yeah,
see, that's the same disappointment I had with
some of these stories, some of the actual reveals.
Some of them are just like, really? You're really
going to go there? And again, I don't see that
the writing is bad. It's just that as, and it's
not just because we are fans, but as people who
grew up with this stuff with these superhero
cartoon shows with the scooby -doo where are
you with the this with the that every time don't
get us wrong folks we know the old scooby team
ups minus when you know they team up with the
harlem globetrotters some of them are not great
They were meant to be in the time that they were
I'm not gonna sit here and say they do or don't
hold up today because they're not meant I don't
feel certain things certain things are meant
to hold up to today's standards of whatever standards
you have and I just didn't feel like I What I
wanted from this story, what I wanted from the
very first cover, like the cover of the book,
with Flash zooming by, stealing their sandwiches.
I was like, ooh, maybe we will get the Flash
family meets the Scooby Gang, or the Flash family,
like Barry, Wally, and I don't know if that's
even or not blood -related, but the Flash...
What's it called? The Speed Force family, they're
all together kind of thing. Jay Garrick, Jesse
Quinn. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All of them. Wally,
everybody. Like, that's kind of what I was hoping
for. I don't necessarily mind that they put in
their own villain and they kind of made Gorilla
Groud a good guy, sort of. But at the same time,
I was hoping for something more with this story,
not just, hey, guess what? This gorilla? Is really
Lex Luthor in disguise and he wants land rights
and I'm like That that would have made it More
that that that would have been better than we
got yeah now we move into the next one which
is you know, simply marvelous and it's you know
Scooby go and the gang going to faucet city and
teaming up with Uncle Marvel and talkie -talkie
Who I firmly believe if they ever make? At like
a ship a proper Shazam animated series like said
it and like the 70s like the Golden Age like
just that simpler Time this would be a great
cartoon for kids and Paul F. Freakin Tomkin should
be talkie -talkie The guy that voiced Gladstone
gander in DuckTales 2017 Okay, he would be perfect
voice for this, but I love this stories like
they got a Finds, you know Captain Marvel Mary
Marvel and Captain Marvel jr They're going up
against the Munster Society of Evil which of
course scares the living bejesus out of shag
and Scoob. Yeah, and I think one of my favorite
callbacks at least them again Captain Marvel
history is whereas if it's a Daphne or Velma's
but he doesn't actually have he has that they
don't Uncle Marvel doesn't actually have powers.
He's like and talkie -talkies like yeah, we just
we pretend that he does to make him feel better
and that's not like Disrespecting the character
or anything folks like in the comics. There's
been one or two times where Uncle Marvel actually
had powers but usually it's just he runs off
to the side and takes a couple of minutes to
put on his costume and I imagine it would look
somewhat like Red Guardian getting into his suit
in the Black Widow movie. Just this over older
old overweight man who maybe doesn't fit clothes
the way he should. It's a good thing and I know
that's probably not a spoiler. It's a good thing
I don't care about spoilers because even though
this episode will be released in the first week
of September I won't actually get to see Black
Widow until October 6th 2021 when it finally
hits Disney Plus for what I already pay for Disney
Plus for I mean, it's not really a spoilers.
It's in the trailer, you know And you see the
lineup of the Munster Society of Evil they don't
name all the monsters you got like Sobeck who's
like the alligator man in the suit. I have no
idea who the goat man or the weird octopus state
man -headed thing is but then you have Sabac
and Ibak who are basically evil versions of Captain
Marvel Mr. Adam the nuclear -powered wrote mr.
Banjo who I I thought it was just some random
Batman villain when he showed up in Brave and
the bold You know, but they they track him down
fairly easy because they do this whole detective
style quest they find these two dudes and I I
love how like cat uncle Marvel's just You guys
look familiar, but I can't just place and then
that a box a buck and boom they got their powers
And then the four cowards on the team, which
is roughly half the fighting force, just lead
the charge out of the warehouse. Yeah. Like,
like you've seen that DC purrs that showcase
presents the return of Black Adam short from
like years ago, right? I don't, I probably have,
but I don't remember. Well, it had like Jerry
O 'Connell voice, Captain Marvel, Got a camera.
It's the guy that played the mutt. He played
Imhotep and the Brendan Fraser mummy movies and
Okay, it's our tan from which one well from technically
both GI Joe movies. Oh Okay, I know who you're
talking about. Yeah, it'll come to me like five
minutes where it doesn't matter anymore He in
that black Adam one the Kevin Michael Richardson
voiced talkie tawny who? Was disguised as a homeless
man on the streets playing the saxophone who
helps out Billy Batson one point and then he
turns it like this Absolutely frightening talking
tiger like sheer Khan would be wet in his kitty
litter kind of scary And that's not talkie tawny
to me talkie tawny is this polite cultured well
-dressed gentleman in a suit, voiced by Paul
F. Tompkins. There you go. But, of course, the
leader of the Monster Evil Society is Mr. Mind,
who, like, when he showed up in Justice League
Action in a couple episodes, like, where he's
in a Patton Oswalt space cabin, he's, like, wrecking
this cab from the inside the dash, I was like,
you villain. It's about the only time he's really
been threatening. Yeah. Probably. All right.
What did you think was strained suspension of
disbelief more, the fact that Velma and Shaggy
just say their catchphrases and they transform,
or the collection of ancient gods and characters
from mythology that combine to make those names?
Yeah, I think the writing is more like... The
the the tablets with the zoinks and the this
and the that and the whatever and cheeks Yeah,
that was a little little strange that's a little
bit of it for anyone that's ever complained about
you know, the strength of Hercules and the Stamina
of Atlas and all that that makes up like Captain
Marvel's magic words like you think that was
bad exhibit a but yeah, they they defeat the
Munster Society of Evil and They we go on to
the next story Fly by night which involves them
teaming up going to Midway City. So, you know,
they're teaming up with Hawkman and Hawk girl
Rock girl Yeah, like I I mean I hear nothing
but Don Messick whenever I see scooby -doo like
no friends to Frank Walker He'd and he's done
a fine job for many years. Now. It's just you
know, I grew up watching, you know All those
original cartoons it's just even don messick
could not make that sound good. No and the This
is another one that I I love hawkman one of my
co -hosts on the comic con of series red ink
Constantly gives me crap in in a loving and respectful
way About my love of Hawkman because he's like
Hawkman sucks. It makes no sense. It was like
nothing in comic books makes sense, but the dude
looks awesome and This is when I didn't enjoy
as much because it's just a little dense And
yeah a little dense on the villainous plot like
you have Nicholas it's a character from history
Nickeris flammel who is like this legendary alchemist
And apparently he's haunting the museum and trying
to steal items. And then it turns out to be three
of Hawkman's most recurring foes in the comics.
The Mattermaster, the Fadeaway Man, and the Shadow
Thief working a combo play to try and scare everybody.
I was like, dude, by the point that the Scooby
Gang's been called in, Hawkman and Hawkgirl show
up. Like, the jig is up. Like, just steal the
shit and run. Why are you... Like, why are you
standing there and like, aha! It's us, Hawkman!
And I understand what they're doing with this
series, Jolly Fish and Dairy Oprah's Well -In,
whatever else, and they're doing the team -up
thing. I get that, and that obviously happened
with, like, the Scooby movies and things like
that and other things in the late 60s all the
way through up until the 80s and such. This story...
to me, again, I have to say this, was told better,
even though it didn't have a Scooby Gang, the
Hawke side of it was told better with Shadow
Thief in Star -Crossed. No, Star -Crossed was
the movie. It would have been in that one episode
in Justice League Unlimited. History. History,
that's what it is. Where they, you know, the
Shadow Thief is actually Katars or Carter, whatever
you wanna call him. Carter. Hawkman's, you know,
his other side. It's a different side to his
personality thing. And I'm not saying they could
have done that with this. His dark side, if you
will. Yeah. As soon as I saw Shadow Thief, the
first thing I thought of was, ooh, I need to
go watch that Justice League episode. Those episodes
were really good. All the Hawkman episodes are
good. It's just like my love for the characters
such as like I appreciate what they did. I thought
it was very well done. It worked within the story
that they were telling with the Justice League
cartoons. But I really like that first Hawkman
episode where I mean clearly it's James Reymar
also voicing Shadow Thief. But he's just I thought
that was Carl Sands the Shadow Thief. So when
they have the revelation that he's like this.
Iago and I don't mean the parrot from Aladdin
From Shakespeare the Iago in Othello who is like
that I was doing it for you. It was all for you
that kind of character it just it It didn't play
as well for me because you know my love of the
character and I like here that you know it's
actually Carl Sands and there are a trio of bumbling
fools and you know that bit where he puts shadow
thief on the Flagpole at the highest point in
the city. He's like pissing himself. He's like
here. Take the book. Take me out. Take me down
You know and we go I mean did you like I said
to dance and it didn't enjoy it as much as the
rest No, yeah, like I said is a little the next
one is I can't decide whether I like it or dislike
it because a I like cats fine, but I'm a dog
person and We get a scooby centric story where
he teams up with a couple other hero accounts
from the history of Hannah Barbera and Another
with two other hero accounts from DC Comics and
they go off Was a third who's kind of a joke,
but I mean kind of lovable and they go to a planet
full of super dogs It's a dog I know right that's
the first thing I thought of and I'm gonna say
this right now This is my favorite issue out
of this entire trade This story is my numb like
if we were rating these stories individually
this story would be the only story for me that
gets a five out of five Yeah I dug this. This
was so cool. Just the puns with like the cat,
the villainous cat names and the dog's names.
You get like paw pooch with like this dog's like
a centipede dog. You know, you got Mammoth Mutt
hot dog who all I could hear is Chris Evans voice
coming out of that playing the canine version
of the human torch. You got some dumb ones like
Tusky Husky. I was like, eh. but like cool cat
was like the beatnik cat with the ice power scaredy
cat that you see one with psychic powers and
i was like please call it what i think he's going
to be called please call it what i think siamese
i was like yes and then you go to the the canine
commandos and my eyes glommed on right away like
the fact that they're homaging uh the classic
image of justice society number one from the
40s and number two they've got a Yankee poodle
from Captain Carrot and the zoo crew and I was
like This is why I love this series. Yeah. Yeah,
this is so good. This is so fun Like they come
back their ghosts know they've been trapped in
an alternate dimension and also kind of looking
the canine commandos, I kind of started flashing
back to Again, it's been so long since I watched
just like that two -parter where they go to like
the alternate world where they meet like the
analogs to the justice society Let's release.
Yeah legends You got nort from the Green Lantern
who frees them from this alternate dimension
and they go back to Earth and I love that it's
a Very famous issue of Justice League of America
from the like the original run of Justice League
in the 60s where they Free the canine commandos
and it homages this I think it's crisis the original
crisis on to Earth's story where you see the
Justice League surrounding this crystal ball
and the smokes coming out and you see the Justice
Society in the smoke and they're kind of evoking
that image here and The villain of the piece
is Dogaton The canine version of per Degoton
who's the time -traveling villain from Justice
Society Like it's so cool. Yes. Yeah, they this
is one of my if not my favorite This is definitely
one of my favorite love letters to DC history
alongside the Don't be a stranger from the beginning
of the book. Yeah Yeah, no, this is absolutely
hilarious. I absolutely love this. I think this
is great. I think we need more Scooby -Doo dog
team ups Well, I mean they got that I'm kind
of hoping Scooby gets a cameo in that Crypto
the Superdog movie that's coming out like when
we're doing Johnson is voicing crypto cuz he
of course he is cuz It's the rock I don't know
if I'm gonna like that. But okay, you know Overall,
I really like this first volume Yeah, I love
this final story the first one the third volume
here. I liked it well enough I just It's For
me I wanted more Cartoon character team ups like
not necessarily a lot the laugh Olympics But
like in the last episode that we did of this
which will obviously link in the show notes Where
we had like secret squirrel and the Jetsons and
the Flintstones and all that and everything else
like I wanted more of that in this That's just
me personally Overall, I would probably give
the whole trade three and a half out of five
I'm gonna give it a four and a half four out
of five. Like I said, it's There's a couple issues
where I just thought it was a little dense and
you know, we're grown men and We're feeling our
age folks and clearly this is a comic more meant
for kids than adult fans and that's cool Kids
might enjoy that bit more. But like I said, I
found a couple of those stories just a little
lacking in certain respects, but by no means
bad and Yeah, so I give a solid four because
like I said, I love this series because of the
The callbacks and the Easter eggs and all that
You know, we didn't I I was kind of hoping we
were going to get Dr. Savana in that Marvel story
a little bit because he's my favorite Captain
Marvel villain. And I don't know if I would have
heard like it was I had to look up on behind
the voice actors like Jim Piddick did him in
Brave and the Bold and it was OG Skeletor himself
Alan Oppenheimer in the filmation Shazam series
from the early 80s. But I'm still hearing Skeletor
in my head Everyone's hearing Skeletor in their
head and it sure as hell ain't a joke Yeah, now
we move into the fourth volume In the first story
the Conjurer's Conundrum Another one that I really
liked because of the callbacks, but I'm gonna
say straight up I Saw this shit coming a mile
away. Yeah Mean it's it's so obvious Yeah, and
I missed it and like halfway through that first
page. I thought we were looking at like this
younger version of Zatara or Zatara the magician
like Satana who scooby the gang team up with
and they're looking at this Museum it's like
they're all in my collection of artifacts and
they're all the most extensive collection ever
is like gee I wonder if the asshole with the
top hat and the Gemstone and his cummerbund or
whatever is the villain. Oh look. I was right
And It's just I love it from that I knew they're
gonna go and look at all these others magic DC
heroes So we got you know classic doctor fate
living in the tower of fate. We got Sargon the
sorcerer. It was the invincible I'm not familiar
with El Karim is let me guess he took your hypnotic
monocle. Yes, I was like Okay, are you yeah,
yeah, are you and why do we care? Yeah, we go
to guys like Prince Raman Tracy 13 black Alice
who's more of a 2000s era character? I've never
heard of warlock the wizard And I knew as soon
as I read that Speech bubble. It's like so you're
a warlock or a wizard. No, my name's warlock
and I'm a wizard So are you a warlock or wizard
and I was like, well, that's ten minutes of their
lives. They're never gonna get back You got Baron
Winters who? Look up Baron Winters and the night
force folks The Wikipedia is your friend on that.
It's a really cool really intense for a comic
that DC put out back in the day I highlight great.
It's just For coming out of like the late 70s
into the early 80s where DC had this run of like
really cool horror comics and supernatural comics
that Really hold up. I can't say enough nice
things about that So they've gone through all
these characters right Mike and they even they
can't for some reason they can't even say his
name But they have to make this, you know, they're
all snappy dressers except for that British guy
with the rumpled trench coat His name is John
Constantine Just say his name Yeah, they won't
do it You know because they're probably thinking
they're gonna look at Hellblazer and the kids
are gonna get possessed by evil or Whatever excuse
people want to give you for knocking on great
comic books Then we have a completely useless
scene with the Catwoman to Zatara's Batman the
Tigress What was the point of this Yeah, again,
I'm not liking where this is going. I'm not really
enjoying this. Again, out of these two volumes,
I can probably safely say I liked one story out
of each of the volumes. I mean, I give it at
least two points on a scale of five for this
story alone, because Again, the callbacks. I
mean, you look at the supernatural villains.
You got Wotan the Sorcerer, Kulak, the Demons
Three, Clarion, Bum Bum Bum, the Witch Boy, the
Wizard, who I'm sure he's a supervillain or he's
just a really dapper dude with a cape. Yeah.
And who in the ham and swiss cheese is the blue
llama? Yeah, really. I mean Yeah, like they barely
get any Again, I'm not saying she isn't a character
folks. It's just I've never heard of this character
and apparently she's the villainess of Sargon
the sorcerer, but it's like the tiger scene Doesn't
really add anything to the story and after that
that's when they was like oh Yeah, it was that
asshole that runs the the mystic mansion which
is based on I forget the name of the place, but
it's this very famous club in Los Angeles that
you have to be an actual practicing magician
to join. Not quite a secret society, but you
definitely have to have your bona fides. Actually,
the late great Bill Bixby from the classic Incredible
Hulk show. Was a practicing magician. He was
part of this I know they kind of rep that's the
basis for this mystic mansion and then the villains
like yeah, I have the power and Scooby gets like
I really thought something was gonna Like Scooby
was gonna weave some magic and defeat the bad
guy cuz he's got all the other Items of power
and he's got the helmet of fate I was just like,
I can't do it. I am not Don Messick. Yeah, it's
just, it's not, I don't know, and I'm sure people
are probably listening to this if they listen
to it at all, asking us, why are you even covering
this if you didn't like it? Well, we got to cover
it because we read it and we spent the time doing
it. I think my favorite part about this specific
story, the Zatanna, Zatara, the fate story, is
Scooby actually getting to have the helmet on.
I thought that was hilarious. Yeah. And it's
all the setup for Fred to... It's basically the
entire story is just enabling Fred to continue
his obsession with pulling masks off of people.
Yeah. That's all this entire series is. And don't
get me wrong. I enjoy it for the most part. There
are things as we found out in these two volumes
that I'm not that big of a fan on, but if your
one guiding goal is to constantly have Fred ripping
masks off people, I don't know. I mean, I do
like that bit at the end where Zatanna just gives
Fred a peck in the cheek and he's like, oh my
God. And Daphne is like, bitch. Just see that
salty look on Daphne's face, and then Zatanna
Magic's up like the biggest pile of Scooby snacks
ever. You know, Rappy Rowell Reed everybody.
I will say the next story that comes in this,
Space Case, my favorite in this volume. I'm straight
up. It's Space Ghost. And Moltor and Zorak. Yes.
But the only way he can be coast -to -coast is
if he's, you know, sitting behind a late -night
TV show desk. God, I wish I'd got those DVDs
when I had the chance. I had the first volume
when I had to, like, sell my DVD collection years
ago because, well... Stuff, yeah. Stuff, life.
Adult responsibilities they suck I had to sell
that and I've never been able to track any of
them down since Although I do have the complete
collection of C lab 2021. So that's a minor comfort
but yeah space ghost and the kids and Was it
no Gleek is the one from? Super friends. Yeah,
Gleek is Wonder twins. Yeah, you know Feel what's
the one just looking here? Monkey. I forget what
his name is Glip. Yeah. Yeah But yes Space ghosts
is waylaid on earth that's giving kind of breaking
the continuity because I always thought the space
ghost cartoon took place in like the far -off
future of You know three thousand ten or something
right and they established that he's just a human
from like Far off in the Andromeda galaxy or
something which I'm not saying it's upsetting.
It's just like man But yeah, they they team up
the thing and they got to bring the scooby kids
into space to stop Zurich and Maltar from Whatever.
I don't really understand what their villainous
plot was So what do they do? They strap four
rockets to the mystery machine and they It becomes
a spaceship. And this is why I love cartoons.
Also, they question why he yells space ghost.
Again, it's like the whole Uncle Marvel thing,
and it just kind of made me smile with glee.
I just can't get into it. Like, if this was a
story, like I said, If Space Ghost was behind
his late night TV desk and he was interviewing
Shaggy and Scooby or Fred and Daphne or whatever
and they told, oh, remember that time we did
this and they referenced something we've seen
in animation? That would be great. But I don't
know. It just didn't. It does kind of break it
a bit. Yeah, it just doesn't. I don't know. Like
I said, I'm. I'm trying my best not to be a downer
here, but this story just isn't. Yeah. No, I
get you. Like you said, the Mystery Machine gets
rockets and they end up on the moon. I'm like,
really? Seriously? That's the way you're going
to end this with everybody on the moon? And why
is Velma? Why is everybody, including Velma?
The only three people that don't look like they
have spacesuits on are Fred, Daphne, and the
monkey. But they have this glowing yellow thing
around them, which I assume is Space Ghost power
or something. Well, if I recall correctly from
the cartoon, the twins and Blip and Space Ghost
all have these force field belts. Something brainiac
five from legion of superheroes would make that,
you know, give them an invisible spacesuit Okay,
apparently they can't lend out a few more of
those so we get like classic era looking Spacesuits
for you know jet scooby and the gang. I do like
how Velma and Daphne are fawning over blip and
he's like And then you look at the speech balloon
you can almost hear here How was it Tony Randall
like the guy who voiced brain gremlin from gremlins
to like just this cultured voice coming out of
them I Love that But yeah, they get to the moon
and you know, you see a Tranquility base and
scooby does that, you know run for our You know
one small step for scooby kind and all that and
they just Bumble their way through the end like
it's and pretty good mix of what goes on in like
a space ghost cartoon and Scooby cartoon, but
by the end of it, like I love this story. I do
it's my favorite in this one. But yeah, it's
just I Think they're uh, who's the writer in
the series again? I forget only fish. Yeah, I
think he fish was trying a little too hard to
take a Scooby story, a Space Ghost story, and
then adult swim Space Ghost stuff. So, you know,
like from he's trying to get like the camaraderie
of Zorak and Moltar from Space Ghost Coast to
Coast and like the Brack show and like that sort
of humor. Because in the original Space Ghost
cartoon, they're the very standard. I've got
you this time spell No, he used his ghost powers.
Yeah, and it's just a little a little too much
This being my favorite story the next story Happy
Harley days. Yeah, this was one of my favorites
out of this one It's my least favorite and it's
for a very nitpicky reason Okay Dario Brazella's
art is great, and every other story, he's knocked
it out of the park, the art -wise. But his Harley
is too plain. Like, you just have this very,
like, it's a girl in a Harlequin costume. It's
not, uh, it's not Tara Strong or, uh, God. Yeah,
it's like I don't get any Arlene Sorkin. I don't
get any Tara Strong. I don't even get The oh
god the chick from through Big Bang Theory Oh
Bernadette. Yeah. Yeah, it's the story in itself
is pretty good I like that how they're taking
shots at like antiques Roadshow and shit like
that and I you know, that's funny and entertaining
and then it becomes like a kid's version of the
plot from assault on Arkham because the Joker
is looking for some sort of device and Like I
hear Mark Hamill coming out of that Joker But
I yeah, it's just like I said Harley has become
one of my favorite characters in DC comics not
just because of her like multiple different designs
and you know this the journey the character has
gone on and Like she's still a lovable kook,
but now in the comic she's a lovable kook on
the side of the angels And she's not tied to
the Joker anymore, which is the best thing they
ever did for the character and I just did not
care for this story. It's It just does nothing
for me Yeah, I think this would have been a little
bit better if it was like if this was a Scooby
-Doo version of Mad Love where she runs, you
know, she leaves because of him, because of the
Joker, you know, being abusive to her and she
goes to poison Ivy and they have a holiday adventure
kind of thing. Cause at first, before the Joker
even shows up, I'm like, Ooh, where's Ivy? Cause
the first thing I thought of was holiday nights
with them, the two of them going around town
and you know brainwashing bruce wayne and spending
all his money and and everything else i mean
thank god batman and batgirl show up um i mean
the the couple things again as far as callbacks
go i like the you got punchy a couple of joker
goons there's punchy and then one of the the
first joker we see in batman beyond and the i
love the the fact that And maybe this carries
over to the animated Batman the animated series
harley's two hyenas are scooby and scrappy. I
really enjoyed that But yeah, I don't think they
named them the animated series. They just calls
us in continuity. I accept. Yeah, those characters
and Yeah, it's just I mean I'll enjoyed the next
story more which again I really think scooby
-team up should become an actual animated series
like I Still I still haven't seen space you have
a new legacy but from what I understand Warner
Brothers was Seemed more concerned with showcasing
every other IP except the Looney Tunes in that
movie From what I've been told and I won't watch
it. I don't think I'll watch it eventually, but
I'll probably wait until it's like cheap rental
online or something but we get in the next one
nothing is impossible where Scooby and the gang
go to a concert of the impossibles which for
listeners who don't know there was the I guess
the late 60s into the early 70s where they had
like a bunch of action Superhero cartoons. They
have the impossibles who are like this Beatles
esc rock band that all have different superpowers
He had Frankenstein jr. Who's running amok and
ruining this concert, you know, they're all contemporaries
of Johnny Quest if I'm not mistaken and Several
times throughout the series like they make Fred,
you know You're not that much of a detective
buddy If you can't tell that these guys were
the same guys that were on stage five minutes
ago Yeah, I mean they're they're basically all
wearing glasses, you know the like he would never
be able to figure out who car Kent really is
or I've always been in the opinion of car Kent
is the real guy in Superman's the mask, but that's
a whole discussion for an entire episode so they
do that and You see the the mad inventor that's
literally the bad guy's name. The mad inventor
has created all these like Kaiju to fight against
Frankie Jr. And I love the shot of the Hanna
-Barbera Godzilla in the background in the one
panel. Yeah. Like, have you ever seen that cartoon?
I don't remember it now. Up from the depths.
30 stories high. I love that theme song. But
yeah, so Frankie's been turned evil and they
basically just have to reboot him. Like they're
all like we have to destroy Frankenstein jr.
And the kids like no he's my friend You don't
want to destroy the kids only friend yeah, but
I mean that's literally all it is it's Mm -hmm.
I mean they even bring back this one one of the
monsters they fight is like this werewolf character.
I'm pretty sure it's one that the scooby gang
has dealt with in the past I yeah, probably I'm
pretty sure but yeah, literally buzz uses his
radar ring, which is this MacGuffin device to
call Frankie jr. To the scene of trouble I Do
like to play on the I would have gotten away
for it, too If not for that meddling kid inventor,
you know, that was funny, you know in the You
have to double down on Fred being a fucking idiot.
He's like, you mean the impossibles are really
the impossibles? Not a chance. Those would be
the worst secret. No, it means that you're an
idiot. Yeah. We love you, Freddy. You have an
incredible sense of style. You a boob. Yeah.
I honestly prefer. And I know he's not necessarily
a boob, but he's more gullible, but it's more
forgivable. I honestly prefer a young Fred from
a pup named Scooby Doo over adult Fred at times.
And this is definitely one of those times where
it's like, really? What are you going to do?
I don't know. But we go on from there to go west,
you meddling kids. Yes. And this is the one,
I love this one. Yeah. But all the other team
ups make sense because like, okay, Scooby teamed
up with a bunch of super powered dogs. Okay,
fine. Because they've established in Hannibal
Bear there are super powered dogs. And they even
take a couple of shots at Dynamite the dog wonder
with that whole copyright infringement. Yeah,
Scooby. Yeah. Oh, God. And then then we go west
now one. The good the font on go west you meddling
kids we see in the comics I am I'm putting that
down now that is a reference to Cowboys of Mumaesa
because I recognize that font like there's no
way that isn't a reference to Cowboys of Mumaesa
That being said, how are you guys not wondering
if you Scott slipped some peyote because you're
talking to a talking horse and a talking Donkey
because Baba Louise It's it's quick stir on McGraw
and Baba Booy and of course Him and his law law
abiding zeal tries to arrest Scooby in the game
because you just rolled into town Therefore you
are the criminals Flawless logic And I even love
like how they like they've got Like bloodhound
like quick straws blood actual bloodhound who
Now that I'm older seems more like a crack addict
than a dog that simply wants a snack before he
does anything. Yeah But that in itself is kind
of a reference to pup named Scooby -Doo because
I'm pretty sure that's the same motions that
Scooby went through before he turned into a rocket
and blasted off into the sky. Yeah, that is the
reference to the pup named Scooby -Doo. Yep And
at first I had to look at it again and I forgot
that he had the dog, because the dog, to me,
I'm like, wait a minute, is that Augie Doggie
or Doggie Daddy? Because at first I thought it
was Augie Doggie, and I'm like, wait a minute,
no, it's not. Now that's a Scooby -Doo team up
I would like to see. Yeah. And it could even
be like, man, Scooby and Shaggy teaming up with
Yogi is like, hey, Shaggy, we got a pickin' it
basket. And like, zoinks. Nope. Oh God I want
that so bad now and no one questions the fact
that the the spook the creep that's been stealing
is like you see him in the background like picking
the jail up and running off with it has no one
noticed that he stole Quick Straw's clothes and
now he's walking around naked and they don't
even make the joke of like, oh my god, I'm so
indecent. And then he jumps behind a boulder
and becomes the greatest Zorro ripoff in the
history of Zorro ripoffs, El Cabong. Who, if
you don't know kids, Quick Straw McGraw would
sometimes jump behind a rock, come out in this
Zorro -esque costume and fight crime by cracking
evildoers upside the head with a guitar. Because
cartoons. Because cartoons and then we have Mr.
Bunny sheriff over here ricochet rabbit ricochet
rabbit That was funny. I liked him showing up.
That was cool. Yeah, I like this he I Had that
line from Avengers. I realigned your neural pathways
You know, I hit you real hard and that's all
it takes is this Invincible guitar that el cabong
never breaks when he cracks fools over the head
and it's literally just gonna pop these people
who have been hypnotized by the Psalm trace kid,
which is a play on like hypnotism And these are
the type of villains that you would get in like
the ricochet rabbit or quick drama grow cartoons
Also the fact that ricochet I forgot ricochet
rabbit had trick bullets Like wow you and Batman
must trade notes cuz the lasso bullet Yeah, that
was very much a Diana thing Yeah, and then I
Forget the name of his slowpoke Deputy can also
ricochet like rabbit, but for some reason he
doesn't ricochet right off the cactus No, he
doesn't he lands right in the middle of it I
mean. Oh God, I love cartoons. Nope, and we get
the like this dude's got a pie like the some
trace kids got this pile of gold that smog the
dragon would be proud of. Yeah. And. God, it's
just so stupid like I love these cartoons again.
I still love him now, but I have to admit the.
I have to admit, I knew exactly how it was. He
creates mirage clones of himself, and then he
hypnotizes the deputy in Fred, who go to fight
the heroes, and all it takes is, again, El Cabong
doing what he does best. Again, this is one of
those things as soon as I saw him turn to Elk
upon I knew how this story was gonna turn out
He's just gonna you know crack fools upside the
dome with the guitar. Yeah, and I Love a Daphne
finds quick dress clothes. Oh, I think these
belong to you Oh, no, I've never said that belongs
to the world famous and staggeringly handsome
lawman quick draw McGraw I do love how earlier
in the story where Elkabong is known for swinging
on a rope and cracking fools upside the head,
and Daphne is like, that's not actually attached
to anything. It's like, damn it, you've ruined
the illusion. And it's like, where does Spider
-Man in the 67 cartoon catches webs too? We don't
know. We don't care. To Bruce's head. Yes. Yes.
Yeah, the el cabong the quick straw McGraw story
it was I I found it funny at points, but I'm
like I Just want more something You know you
talked about one of the other stories being a
little bit too dense this was a little bit too
light You need to balance that a little bit better.
I think Yeah, they're it's not perfect But like
I said, it's a lot of fun because it's taken
me back to my youth. Like it was Channel 10 when
I grew up had the Flintstones at noon, but the
15 minutes before there was two Hanna Barbera
shorts. It was like Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound,
Snaggle Puss, Quick Draw McGraw, such like that.
So I have nothing but love for these cartoons.
And then we move on to the last one with The
Martian Manhunter, Out of This World. This story
jumped the noisy cricket as soon as they introduced
themselves. Yeah. Now, here's the thing. My one
gripe with this story, I really enjoyed the story.
I enjoyed the more superhero, traditional DC
comic team up stories than space ghosts and the
other characters, which are still great. My problem
is the design that Brazula did with Martian Manter.
First of all, this dude is jacked. This is John
Cena in green body paint, because John Cena has
more pronounced chins than a rock, therefore
it's John Cena. But based on the design, he kind
of looks like the Martian Manhunter from The
Batman. So I want to hear Darian Harewood's voice.
Like original roadie from the 90s Iron Man cartoon,
but at the same time My mind is like fritzing
out because it's trying to force me to hear Carl
Lumley Who is the Martian Manhunter as Kevin
Conroy is to the Dark Knight detective? That's
literally the only problem I have with this story
I Mean the and it really isn't a problem. It's
not gonna take away from my overall grade, but
the giant eye roll that I had. What alien? The
Martian Manhunter? He already left. Who are you
guys? Where are the men in plaid? Persons in
plaid. Persons in plaid. Like really? Seriously?
Yeah. Agent C and D of the persons in plaid.
That just, like I said a second ago, it jumped
the noisy cricket for me so far. And I'm like,
wow. But you have the men in black and then there
was an issue with a pinky in the brain comic
back in the day where they parodied men and blind
they were the mice and pink which has like an
entire one or two page spread of Pinky in the
brain doing their own vision version of the Will
Smith men in black song Which was great? Yeah,
that's great this like You know, but it's The
plot of the story folks said very briefly is
Martian Manhunter is on the run and they run
into him in the midst of solving a one mystery
and he's disguised as Shaggy because apparently
Martian Manhunter has also been on TV all morning
advocating that all alien heroes and characters
on earth rise up and take over. And he's like,
you know, he's talking about Kanjaro, Hawkman,
Hawk Girl, Blue Beetle, the Jaime Reyes version,
not the Ted Kord version, and his old alien sidekick,
Zook, who looks like a Disney character with
a domino mask. It's fortunate Superman's in another
galaxy. Well, yeah. And this is another one of
my favorite stories, because like, again, the
story, it's not that difficult to figure out.
It's not that I saw the The ending coming a mile
away, but again to you know, a little bit of
DC history They they light up these other alien
hero characters. You have Jem son of Saturn who's
like an analog to Martian manager that came out
in the 80s He got Teen Titans version starfire
right all I could hear is They got the Late 70s
early 80s star man. So you have original Golden
Age star man, then you had The alien prince which
was the other other other other star man. I just
love how they keep adding others to it I thought
he was a young hipster dude, which references
the James Robinson the star man of the 90s You're
his father. That's the other other star man Earthling
with a mullet. That's the one from the 80s And
then The Alien Prince was the one from like the
60s. And I love how obviously Starfire heard
this. She's like, No, I am not the Russian superhero
Starfire nor the barbarian freedom fighters Starfire,
which before either of those Starfire like the
Russian one or everyone's favorite Starfire,
you know, Princess Corey, there was a very brief
run in Where DC also came out around the time
they did their horror comics. They had a bunch
of like sci -fi fantasy Comics and starfighter
was this female freedom fighter in a far us far
off star system You know Wow And then you have
ultra the multi alien who's not actually an alien
He's just a human who was hit by a ray and possesses
the qualities of four different alien species
Yeah, I need to make one correction just because
I want to make sure we have this right. It was
Hayden Walsh who voiced Starfire. Terra did do
Raven though in the original Teen Titans. Heaven
forbid we get something wrong. I mean, it's not
like He -Man and the Masters of the Universe
came out in 1981 or anything. I'd touch you now
with a 10 -foot cattle prod. Uh -huh. You mean
the 10 -foot power sword? Of course Shaggy and
Scooby freak the flip out and They they go to
try and figure out like watching TV Fred Honestly,
I most of these comics you could say it's set
in the 60s 70s Just with the with Brazillas art
and the stories in and of themselves Like even
space goes strapping rockets to the mystery machine
and sending it to the moon within the realm of
the technology of that time period. All of a
sudden, Fred pulls out a freaking iPhone. Yeah,
that's a little much. I'm just like, oh, God.
It made me smile, of course, because whatever.
And you see the fake man hunter, fake hunter,
if you will, has got some jewelry or something
around his neck. I thought it was a zipper at
first. And then the the the persons in plaid
show up I'm just gonna say it all I heard was
Nolan North coming out of the man and Nolan North
doing a bad female voice coming out of the woman
Because the all I could see are like the Krang
from TMNT 2012. Yeah like just that mannerisms
that stiffness and Nolan North was like my MVP
of that series well him and Boone I can't remember
the gentleman that voicemaster splinter because
2012 splinters my favorite splinter That would
be Hoon Lee. That's it. Thank you Also using
a show called Banshee that it's that shows dark
and violent AF but if you enjoy that sort of
thing check it out folks, but yeah that The the
persons in plaid try to arrest everybody and
70 disco star man and Teen Titans star fire Tries
zapping them and of course, they've got Forcefield
so all it takes is gem and and John to like mine
meld with them and knock them out and they steal
these weird zappers and They run away to all
they do is look at the photo That Fred took and
they deduced like what building they're in Mm
-hmm and it's slow that scene where you see the
different starmen and starfire and they're in
the trench coats and I couldn't help but think
of gargoyles for some reason they're Like yeah,
I'd like Jim definitely looks like Broadway in
his Humphrey Bogart get up and there's a very
infamous image of What they were going to do
when the show is going to be more of a comedy
of these the creatures where you see Goliath
shoved into a trench coat and a hat Sitting on
a park bench and everyone's staring at him. He's
like, how's it going fellow humans? You know
stuff like that, but they get to this this skyscraper
and They they They tag you see it's just a dude
in a costume like it's always a dude to cost
you but I was kind of hoping it was gonna be
like some rare DC super villain that Martian
Manhunter fought or this dude the human flame
who Famously killed John Jones just before the
final crisis crossover years ago No, it's just
some random dude wearing a costume who apparently
he's an old John Jones villain I'm not that well
-deeped in the Silver Age John Jones comics,
but neither am I. He's probably just a mad scientist
with an increased cerebellum and the persons
in Plaid who come up and they're gonna try and
arrest everybody and they turn out to be the
great Roswell aliens. That's funny. Like I love
the story because it's so goofy and it was fun
And this is exactly what an issue of scooby -doo
team up should be every time out of the gate,
right? Yeah Absolutely, it should be And yeah,
I mean, I don't know I like I said I wasn't as
Like once I read these two trades I wasn't exactly
thrilled with them, but there are aspects I do
enjoy. The art is amazing. There are a few times
where the art looks off, but overall, the colors,
the lines, the backgrounds, everything is great.
Sholey does a great job writing. It's just for
me personally, I'm not into the characters that
they're using half of the time. And some of the
time... the problem I have is the Scooby aspect
of it, where it's like, we have to fit these
characters into the Scooby -Doo Mystery Inc.
formula, like you said earlier, where it just
seems like all is they're trying to do is have
Fred rip masks off, or whatever. I don't know.
Yeah. I mean, if we continue this in the future,
And and obviously we've dragged on a little longer
on that first volume because I went nuts with
all the minutiae At least I think it would be
a better episode if we did like one volume next
time if we ever come back to this because you
know about that because I mean you look at the
the next volume the first story is Ghosts are
not healthy for dogs and other living things
and involves the scooby gang teaming up with
green arrow green lantern black canary and the
big bad of it is the psycho pirate who I Just
remember as I think it was Peter McNichol in
Batman brave in the bold I might be wrong about
that and then the next one enter the drags and
eggs at scooby -doo. They team up with Hong Kong
fooey Yeah Yeah, I think we are gonna have to
do these as single volume things from now on
because like I said There's just so much in here.
There's oh, yeah There's so much in here and
there's only four volumes left and again that
this was We're recording this in 2021. It'll
be released in 2021 Sometime in the middle of
2020. I forget if it was you or somebody told
me you better hurry up go on to Comixology because
at the time, not now, at the time, all of the
trades were free. On Comixology, you know, I
think I might have told you about when they put
a whole bunch of Black Panther stuff for free,
right? Right tragic passing Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman Yeah, and I did get all of that
and that will eventually be covered in the pullback
at some point I don't know with who because I
haven't read any of it yet, but Yeah, no, I think
I think for now, Scooby and his team are gonna
have to wait until after we hit over 500 episodes
because I just don't have any interest right
now. It didn't turn me, oh my God, I don't wanna
never do this again. It's just gonna be a while.
Like I said, even echoing what I said about the
Hawkman story, overall, this series is... Fairly
dense for adult fans now the kids obviously You
know, I I would very much hope you know our listeners
who have kids Who are maybe reading these comics
with their kids? You can point out that you know
You've got these characters and those characters
and the kids might go and go down that particular
rabbit hole and look up like the classic DC ghost
characters or them, you know, the parents might
introduce them to who's who you know, just I've
always loved the who's who and then when it became
secret files in the 90s like that with those
Summation of their history and this is what their
powers are and all that like it's overall It's
a fairly dense filling meal if you will and some
people don't enjoy that and that's cool too because
you can just read these as you know Like simple
adventure stories where scooby and the gang team
up with Batman Yeah, and like I said at the beginning
of this, I like to team up with Batman and everything
else and that's cool. I enjoy that. I like to
team up with Superman and Wonder Woman. That's
great. The Zatanna one was cool. But what I want
is not, like I said earlier, not necessarily
Laugh Olympics, but I want Scooby to team up
with other cartoon characters or... Hell, even
though we need a Harlem Globetrotters special
or something, or we need a Don Mess... Oh, I
just thought of something. Don Nott's. Scooby
and the gang team up with the pro stars. And
just see who can eat more hot dogs, Shaggy and
Scoob or that crazy Canuck Wayne Gretzky. Yeah.
Honestly, don't know where they came up with
that like they look at wait. Hey Wayne Do you
like eating a lot? He's like, uh, yeah, okay.
You're just you're gonna be shaggy from Scooby
-Doo in the cartoon. Okay And you know god I
love that show What would you rate volume three
sir or wait we already rated volume three, what
would you rate volume four zero to five? I'm
gonna give it a three and a half Like, the stories
in here were great. Like I said, the only real
one I didn't like was Happy Harley Days, which
again, we didn't even mention the show. It's
set at Christmas time. So it's, you could see
this as like an off -brand sequel to Holiday
Nights. Yeah. That episode. Yeah, just like I
said, just the fanboy confusion of, am I hearing
Dorian Harewood, or am I hearing Carl Lumley
out of John Cena Manhunter? He was pretty buff
in that. Yeah. Dude, he's got that Martian creatine
going on. Yeah. So I have no idea. Go ahead.
I was going to say overall, I would rate this
about a three and a half to a four. Again, a
lot of fun. worth a read if you're a fan of classic
DC characters or Scooby -Doo? Yeah. For me, I'm
going to give it a three. I wasn't that big of
a fan of it, but it's not like if I was going
to give this anything less than a three, we would
not be going back to it at some point in the
future because the original plan was to do all
of them together, but I just I need to move on
to something else for now. your eyes were bigger
than your stomach kind of yeah yeah kind of i
mean when we did the first two volumes i decided
finally to try that new uh scooby -doo and guess
who i love that show that was awesome you know
what i think my the reason i didn't like it as
much as i wanted to was it wasn't old school
hannah barbera animation which really you that's
just like that chef's kiss the sweet spot For
scooby -doo teaming up like the original, you
know scooby -doo movies Where you know, he teams
up with Batman or Phyllis Diller the Harlem Gobchatters,
you know stuff like that and It's just a little
too slick for me. It's not a bad series. It's
just it doesn't It doesn't fill you fill me up
the way The original series does right? it's
not be cool scooby -doo, which I tried that and
I turned it off. I turned my computer off. I
went for a walk. I had to think about my life
choices. That's what that series did to me. Yeah,
we've done one episode of Scooby -Doo Guess Who
over on Tooncast. It's episode 234. It was the
very first episode of that series with Chris
Paul. I do have plans to do the rest of the series
at some point over there on Tooncast. I don't
know when that's going to be, though. But yeah,
I enjoyed Guess Who. I'm like, at the time when
they were releasing it, it was like, you never
know who's going to show up. And I'm like, who's
going to show up? Who's going to show up? I'm
like, oh, they're getting a, like it was a. It's
a decent or it was because I don't think they're
doing it anymore It was a decent updating of
the new scooby movies where they had all the
crossovers yeah I get your concern about animation
and all that and everything else near you're
not wrong with that but coming up here inside
the pull bag I have no idea what's going on next
I do know that later this month we will be talking
about Transformers Beast Wars number eight and
radiant black issues seven and eight and then
at some point the end of the month I'm going
to be doing the way of the comic book too so
If people go back to episode three, what was
that? It was a 0 .5. It was 350 something, 0
.5 or three something. It's in the 300 somewhere
where I had a comic writer and creator, Pat Shandon,
and we just talked about the state of comics
at the time. So I'm going to do that again. I'm
going to get a comic book writer and potentially
a comic book artist to come on and especially
with everything that's happened since the last
time. I did the way of the comic book, considering
the pandemic and how it hit the comics industry
and everything else. So that's what's coming
up here inside the pull bag for the rest of September.
In October, we've got a bunch of stuff coming
up, so stay tuned for that. Where can the people
