About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Ryan dive into Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larocca's 2015 Darth Vader series, covering volumes 1 and 2. They discuss Gillen's writing, Larocca's expressive artwork, and how the series captures Vader as a complex character building his own army between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. The hosts praise the supporting cast—Dr. Aphra, the twisted droids BT-1 and Triple-O, and the Imperial adjudicants—and explore how the series balances character development with action and Star Wars lore without falling into fan-service nostalgia.

comics yay another machine Specifically this

is the Darth Vader series from 2015 written by

Kieron Gillen and art by I'll get it all out

of the way here in a second, but Yeah, you may

want to pause this one. Uh oh, what happened?

I thought we were doing the 2017 Vader. No! I

could have sworn you gave me a picture of the

Charles Soule series. No! Oh man, I'm sorry.

Oh man! Damn it, I sent you - I know I sent you

the right link because I don't have the other

one in my - Shit, I could have sworn. I was sure

it was the cover to those trains. Here, hold

on. Where is it? Hold on, hold on. What the hell

is it? Star Wars... No, no, no. This is the...

When Marvel first got Star Wars back... Let's

see it. Oh, geez, I see it now. Why did I think

it was... Got it? Yeah. Okay, so we can do this

another day. Oh, man. I'm sure I saw the other

one. We can eventually do the other one, yeah,

but this was the... That's funny. Yes, thank

you joker. I don't know why you would be in a

Marvel Star Wars thing But yes, the technical

difficulties are over. I am of course TFJU and

Mike Joining me is that wrong reading Ryan? Again

in my defense it's mixed up on Thomas ology and

for some reason I could have sworn you said I

sent you the right link I Thought it was on the

messenger. But anyway They sent me a picture

of the cover to the 2017 series. Anyway. Anyway,

we are here, as I tried to say in the beginning

of this, to talk about Ciaran Gillian's and Salvador

La Roca's Darth Vader. This was from 2015. This

was when Marvel first took over Star Wars at

the time. And this is the Darth Vader series.

I actually did written reviews for each of these

issues. I think I did the first eight or nine

issues of this series way back when. This was

when the pullback was... Oh, so just skip the

issue ten. Ha ha ha, funny. This is gonna be

really short. Funny, funny, funny, funny, funny.

So as I said, Ciaran Galean on writing Salvador

La Roca on art. The colorist is Edgar Delgado.

Letter is VC Joe Caramonga and the cover art

is done by Adi Granov. I love Adi's stuff. I

think it's super cool. I love that main cover

here. All the covers are really well done. All

of the artwork is well done too. So, screw it,

you know. As anybody listening knows, I read

the wrong series originally. The artwork... In

both series is exceptionally good. I prefer la

roca's art here and he especially captures expressions

better And obviously that's You'd think that's

not super important when you consider that Vader

cannot have an expression but there's the surrounding

characters in both books made both series make

them and having that expressiveness in this series

really works well. Like you can tell the moods

or thoughts of Dr. Afra from, that's what I said.

Am I Canadian accent confusing you? Anyway. But

you can tell the expressions. from the expressions

on her, what she's thinking and it's the same

with most of the characters. It does a really

good job with Tag. The one I really want to mention

though is Emperor Palpatine is not the best character

design. I always thought he looked stupid in

the movies and on the comic page, oh boy is he

hard to get right. For versions of... Illustrations

of this read the 2017 series and try not to laugh

every time he appears because his expression

And most of the time looks like he's smiling

hilariously poorly And in this he's mostly in

shadows, but it's it's it works Here there are

some points where it doesn't look great but that's

one of the things with this book too is you're

taking character designs from I don't know how

to say this without enraging a serious group

of fans, but a film that was on a budget in the

70s and trying to have them move around. So Vader

is a great example where he had the mobility

of a 1980s transformer figure in the films. And

you've got to have them much more mobile and

that sort of thing in this series. Ditto for

Palpatine. So no, they are really good and they

look They look the way they should in the film

And also seems like from the action sequences

They move roughly the way they should which to

me is a really hard thing to do when like I said,

you've got a guy who again Trying to be a jerk,

but quite frankly moves like, you know brick

Yeah Yeah, you're right. I mean everything in

this series Because we are covering volume one

and volume two in this episode folks so both

of these volumes were just talking about volume

one specifically like where this is set and when

it is set and having Vader do what he's doing

and Then it's set between a new hope and Empire.

Yeah Just to clarify for everyone, it's in the

shadow of the destruction of the first death

star, which is a period of time which novels

have explored and quite a few comics. But again,

the Marvel stuff is. Posted Disney acquisition

of, well, everything on Earth. This is sort of

a fresh restart and period. Set it in two, by

the way, because. Yeah, the novels have explored

it. Yes, some of the old comics have explored

it, but not everybody has read all of those.

So there were a bajillion of them. So it's not

the worst idea in the world to kind of start

it over again. Yep. And I love what Larocca and

Delgado and Caramanga do with the colors, the

letters and the art itself. Like the scene where,

you know, In volume one in the first issue where

you know Vader is thinking back to when he was

going after Luke You know the force is strong

with this one. Just seeing the trench just seeing

his view from the TIE fighter Going against the

the x -wing. It's like wow It's like film just

come to life on on a 2d page for comics absolutely

able to do that All of the space scenes are really

well done, and those again are something that's

really difficult to put as art in a comic series

and have done a very good job of that. But overall,

so the thing that impressed me most, yeah, so

you reviewed the issues individually originally.

I was not big. on the first issue and a chunk

of the second issue. And the reason why is the

first issue is really just Vader or visiting

Java, which kind of felt a bit nostalgic. You

know, it's meant to be reminiscent of Luke's

visit, albeit he's a lot more vicious and mean

about it. But I don't know, I just could have

done without it. And I guess I was a little worried

that it was just going to be sort of a nostalgic.

Drip, but by the introduction of Grand Was a

grand general grand dad. Yeah grand general tag

Yes, I really liked that character somebody meant

to be sort of a foil slash equal to Vader I Liked

him and it's the introduction and it's the characters

around Vader that keep it from falling into just

being a nostalgia trip so yes characters like

Boba Fett are in this yes Bosque makes an appearance

etc etc but doesn't fall into just using the

characters we know they establish a really interesting

cast around them and by the end of the second

issue I was really enjoying it I very much enjoyed

the first issue. I felt it was set up even after

all these years of having read this a long time

ago when it first came out, four years ago, whatever.

Like rereading this, I'm like, oh yeah, that's

right. Oh yeah, that's right. Like you get into

the second issue and that big opening thing of

the fight in space and Vader's TIE fighter coming

out of the smoke. Like, oh, I remember I went

nuts for that arc and the story, you're right.

It's about the characters that are around Vader

that enhance him to be a better character. That

being said, Vader himself, as it's been established

in the story, you know, he's coming off of a

failure. The Death Star got blown up. He got

defeated. So, you know, we get to see, you know,

what happened between A New Hope and Empire and

little, you know, six, seven, eight, nine -year

-old me is like screaming in my head because

I'm like, oh my God, yes, because I have always

felt, and I will never not ever say this, A New

Hope just kind of ends. And I'm like, wait, that's

it? Really? They just get trophies and we're

done? Huh? That's my biggest complaint about

A New Hope. Is that the film just ends on well

for all of Lucas's posturing that oh, yeah, it

was always meant to be a trilogy Yes, no, it

wasn't. Yeah, anyone who has watched film before

I can tell you no He wasn't sure and so he kind

of hedged his bets. Maybe hoped it would be but

yeah, and He's gonna get all the Star Wars fans

mad at me for this whatever I don't care so One

of the issues I always have with the Star Wars

universe is The more you try to explain about

the Universe the more off the rails it tends

to go like we didn't need to know how Darth Vader

became Darth Vader We didn't need See how c3po

and r2d2 were built and by who we didn't need

to know that Yoda and Chewbacca had met like

all of this is A. It makes the universe feel

way too small in a stupid way. B. It makes the

universe feel incestuous that absolutely everybody

has to be tied in to everybody. And C. It flat

out doesn't make any fucking sense. And that's

one of the things that always bugged me. Star

Wars is at its best when it just concentrates

on the characters. And why I like this series

so much is the in this case, Kieran McGillen,

clearly understands it because this is terrific.

And, you know, it takes Charles Sewell more time

to get a hold of everyone in that 2017 series.

So I'm actually kind of glad I screwed up and

ended up rereading this. I read this when it

originally came out. I had forgotten it. I read

too many comics and I'm getting old. Yes, you

read everything. I'm impressed at how quickly

he establishes the universe and how quickly he

grabs a hold of everyone. Like you said, you

enjoyed that first issue. I wasn't as big on

it. But at the halfway point of the second issue,

I was hooked. And then the third issue. So again,

and to give a quick plot synopsis, the third

issue is Vader essentially slowly kind of trying

to build his own army. separate of the Empire,

and he recruits the aforementioned Dr. Aphra

to help him in that, and they fought. So first

of all, I love her stuff with Vader. They essentially

become heist things, except with the Force and

Vader, and her pair of psychotic droids. Oh,

man. I loved it. Yeah, anyone who's ever played

Knights of the Old Republic knows nothing is

better than a psychotic killing she enjoyed.

I'm sort of sad. There's a nod to HK 47 later

on, but I'm sort of sad none of the HK ones that

are in this. But yeah, BT1 is terrific in this

and it's triple 03? No, it's triple O. Triple

O. Yeah. Yeah. They are like protocol droid with

a penchant for torture and bt1 is a psychotic

astromech He's actually a psychotic blastomech

who passes for an astromech. Well, he looks like

an astromech Yeah, he looks like an astromech,

but he's actually a blastomech When I first read

this I'm like holy shit evil c3po and r2d2 Yes,

we need more shit like this because this was

cool You want to talk about getting characters

and getting the up the essentially shattered

glass versions of characters like a Murderous

version of c3po. That's hilarious a version of

c3po that loves to torture people that's Kind

of sickening, but it works for what it is sometime

you need to so you know when we're done this

sometime Go on YouTube search for the best of

HK 47 from the Knights of the Old Republic game

He is a protocol droid who is also on assassination

droid and he is delightful That's kind of where

those games are terrific. It's he's one of the

reasons People adore them, but the characters

in general And I love the characters in this.

Issue four is more of the same, but I could.

These four characters work really well together.

Yes, they do. And he could have gone on with

them for quite some time. What I also like about

the series is it does a good job of establishing

or re -establishing, I guess, Vader as a badass

without. just having to tell us he's a badass.

They show a fair amount, but they don't spend

all that much time on it either. It's really

well done. It's balanced perfectly. I really

like this series. I love, you know, Aphra knows

that Vader's just gonna kill her. And I liked

her speech to him about, you know, she just wants

a lightsaber through the neck. So that's so much

to ask. Yeah. And what this series does is not

only does it give us the new characters in Aphra,

Triple -O, BT, and all that, like we've said,

it gives the classic, you know, it shows what

Boba Fett is doing. It gives us an insight into

Vader that we've never really seen before, like

I said before, the scene with him remembering

going after Luke, or him remembering fighting

Obi -Wan. I'm skipping ahead here, but in the

sixth issue we have him remembering Padme, and

all of that. It can do that, like you were saying

with Gillian versus Sol. Have not read the 2017

series mistake or otherwise I will eventually

read it, but I have not read it yet You said

that soul it felt like it it took him some time

to get it starts out slower Yeah, Gillian nails

it from the go exactly Like these first six issues

in volume one like everything is on point. It's

telling a decent story We already mentioned that

you know Vader's kind of amassing his own army

kind of thing outside of the Empire and it just

works Which I also like cuz Vader was very much

in the films up until the point he decides To

turn on the Emperor. It just seems very subservient

We don't necessarily get a hint that There's

much going on under the mask Until much later

on yeah, I Like this I like him as I like him

as a planner in long term or otherwise I like

him being able to plot, you know heists Absolutely,

and I believe Eddie Granoff does all the covers

for all of these issues, at least for these two

volumes. I don't know about volume three and

four yet, but all of the main internal covers

for the issues, like one through six and then

seven through 12. Man, talk about some of the

best Star Wars cover art I have ever seen. You

want to talk about a cover artist that captures

the feel of Star Wars, Granoff does it. Yeah,

I don't have anything else to add to that All

right volume one. How would you rate it zero

to five? Well just to finish off so I Liked a

lot of it I It kind of made sense that the Emperor

would have plans if Vader failed so the concept

of replacements slash heirs to Vader works I

like especially that we finally got to see the

sequence in which Darth Vader realizes, oh, apparently

I have a son. And that's how the first volume

ends off. But I really like it. And I'm not the

biggest Star Wars guy. I think I've said that

a few times. I love the original trilogy. Phantomenis

is the only film I've fallen asleep during. pack

of the clones literally gives me a headache every

time I try to watch it. I just get so angry and

Revenge of the Sith is the best of the prequel

trilogy and that is saying so little Revenge

of the Sith is the only prequel I can watch.

I mean Phantom Menace is okay. Two are painful.

One and two are painful, but Phantom Menace overall

I think with like the Ray Park You know, Darth

Maul fight and I think all of that is fine. I

like, I like seeing young Obi -Wan attack the

clones is just, it's awful. But Andrew and I

have a long running discussion slash arguments

on which is worse. Cause I really hate Phantom

Menace. I'd rather see pod racing than a creepy

love story. It's close. I hate it. So the pod

racing scene, I always hated it because it's

completely superfluous to the plot. True. You

know, they're gonna win and not get stuck on

the planet It should have just been it should

have been one of those side -to -side wipes they

do in the original series where they Yeah, just

go like wow Anakin good job winning the race

and then we get back to an actual plot or something

but of course we never get back to plots in that

movie because there's They don't bother with

it. Uh, anywho volume one. Yeah, so It's tough.

I'm gonna go with a For me, it's a 4 .5. I wasn't

huge on the first issue But it was very very

good and I highly recommend it to Star Wars fans

and non Star Wars fans alike also, especially

just by the first two volumes at least because

You're not gonna want to end at the first one.

I just spoiled the end to it It's okay. It's

been out for four years. I mean, you know Um,

yeah, I mean, I, I absolutely dug the first volume

again, reading it again after all these years,

four, whatever, but, um, yeah, I'm right there

with you four and a half. Um, and the only reason

why I'm not giving it a five this time around

is because not that you're not wrong, but you're

absolutely right. The emperor inside the book.

He. He's not as old as his version in Jedi, but

he's not as young as I don't know I don't know

like I think the best the Emperor looked in volume

one was on the cover of issue six and That was

Addie's art. That was not Roka's art in the book

But that would be the only reason why I give

it a take a half point off of it because of that

the rest of it the story the characters Vader

all of that is just absolutely great. Geez. I

thought I was being harsh Yeah, volume to William

to the way Vader confronts his greatest enemy

sand Yes, which is so coarse and gets everywhere

that it's oh god. Damn it. Why do I ref? Anyway

So should be noted by the way, I don't know if

you've read it But a lot of the stuff that gets

referenced in this second volume, and particularly

the fight between Boba Fett and Luke, occurs

in the pages of Jason Aaron's Star Wars comic,

as in the main line. That's the thing here. I

like how they do that, by the way. It ties in

really well. Yeah, see, that's the thing. When

all of this happened, when this new Darth, at

the time, in 2015, new Darth Vader series started,

Aaron's Star Wars was going at the same time.

And after this volume we lead into Darth Vader

or Star Wars Vader down Which is the big crossover

between both of those books? Yeah, so before

we get to volume three and four later this year

We're going to have to do Star Wars volumes one

and two and then down Without it being Yeah,

an actual tie -in right how they did this with

just the references and you don't have to Have

read them. It's it's neat. Yeah, it's more fun

if you did Yeah, but it's not entirely necessary.

I like it when they do that I hate it when Marvel

does it where you have to buy 600 issue. Yeah

is to Get the complete story of it. Like gee,

I don't know all of their events which have driven

me insane over the years. Anywho Vader is it's

Tatooine again his favorite planet in the entire

galaxy And he hangs out at Aunt Beru and Uncle

Owen's place, and for some reason they don't

answer. I wonder why. I guess they're just lazy.

It's awful, I mean. So this issue is a lot of

fun, and it continues kind of the trend for the

rest of the series in this volume, and that is

Vader is kind of doing his own thing for the

Empire. and i'm putting that in parentheses just

because he's kind of serving the empire but he's

still got his own own thing going on and he's

mostly trying to find out about luke uh meanwhile

the people with him i .e. dr afra is kind of

doing her own thing with the heists and getting

the money to fund vader's army slash vader's

looking into slash gathering information on luke

And man is this fun. This entire volume is fun.

So issue one is kind of a band getting together.

Sorry, when I say issue one, I mean issue six,

but it's issue one of this trade. Seven, actually.

Yeah. Yeah, sorry. Oops. It's okay. Yeah, seven.

Eight is the actual heist. You know, and then

afterwards we kind of deal with the ramific eight.

as the storylines merge, which I absolutely love,

because Vader is tasked with finding out who

stole all of the credits from Tag and his fleet.

You know, Tag wants to build a whole bunch more

Super Star Destroyers, which, by the way, is

probably a pretty good plan. But for some reason,

I don't know why the Empire is always so cheap.

You know, they could be bothered to fix an exhaust

port. Yeah, really. They couldn't have, you know,

come up with, like, just a couple things to maybe,

you know, shore up the Empire. Instead, all their

ships have terrible weak spots. Like, who puts

the shield generators on the outside of your

ship so they can just get blown up? It was a

terrible idea. Yeah, that's nuts. Of course,

to be fair, the Federation puts the bridges of

their starships on the top where they're easy

to shoot. So something about these space Fleets

not a lot of planning went into anyway joking

aside I Love this volume Yeah, volume 2 is awesome

volume 2 really gets the highest of the stuff

watching. Yeah. Yeah watching everyone plan Tags

adjudicant who is tasked with watching Vader

is a great character as well. He is the perfect

He is the opposite of Vader. He doesn't have

the brawn But he's definitely got the smuts Now

this is Vader's second adjudicant. The first

one he fingered as a traitor to get rid of. But

this one's a lot smarter. Sanoth is every bit

the match of Vader in the wits department. If

not past him because he knows what's going on

before Darth does. I don't wanna, I'm gonna say

something that's probably gonna anger a lot of

people. This is just based on his design. What

is this? Xanthoth? Xanthoth. Xanthoth. He looks

like a African -American version of Revolver

Ocelot. A little bit, because of the mustache

and the whatever. Like, I'm like, is that? What's?

I don't think you're a solid Star Wars fan. I

always thought of him as a cross between Morgan

Freeman and James Earl Jones got a little bit

of both of them. But yeah, I really like his

character. I like how he interacts with Vader.

In this series, too, we see more of the quote

unquote replacements for Vader and how they operate.

All of this really well done, and they balance

a number of different characters and a number

of different plot lines, which all come together

by the end. And it's just, it comes together

really well. Yep. It really does. You get a little

bit of everything. There's a good amount of action

in this. There's a good amount of plots for people

who are just really interested or into Star Wars.

There's a fair amount of discussion about Luke

and about the possibilities that, oh, you know,

Vader fathered a child. And it should be noted,

Vader only finds out about the son in this. The

daughter, of course, mentioned. Oh, um, and I,

again, I think that goes, whatever edict, um,

Kieran was given about this, obviously, as you

said, this takes place between a new hope and

empire. So whatever, at least this, this part

of the run does, I don't know about after this,

but, um, You know if this furthers past empire

at some point or whatever I'm not sure if it

will because I I actually have never read the

whole run I've only ever read the first 12 issues.

I never got off after the first couple years.

It was just I can't remember exactly why it wasn't

like a Trist or anything. I'm pretty sure was

like a money at the time Yeah, I did not keep

going to see if it kept On after but in the first

few years of it. So yeah, no, they stayed in

between Okay, I knew open Empire. Okay good because

that way we don't ever really get you know we

only get the thing about Luke and we only get

all of that and It's I wish the series had continued

but I understand why it doesn't and it's fine.

It is So Vader does a good job here too of I'm

interested in all of these characters, which

again is smart, because to be blunt, we already

know the fate of Vader, Palpatine. We know what

happens to these characters. We know exactly

when they die and who they are and everything

else. So if you're going to do things that, say,

put them in danger or certain situations, well,

we kind of know how they turn out. So there could

be just a complete lack of tension or interest

from that. But no, they do such a good job with

everyone else. I legitimately mentally are interested

in the fates of the other characters enough to

keep reading. Yeah, absolutely. And that's important

because nobody's going to keep reading if Vader

is the only person that's centered around. Because

again, I already know. Yeah. He's not going to

die in this, you know. in this series. Or else

the writers can have a lot of explaining too.

You killed Darth Vader before he really is supposed

to die? What's wrong with you? Yeah. And I love

his relationship with Aphra as it goes forward.

I love just all of the art in issues 10, 11,

and 12. Specifically like the cloud battles and

stuff, like the blue cloud battle stuff. I'm

like, oh, that is so cool. This is part of the

space battle. In the storms, yeah. Yeah, in the

storms. Yes. I love that. Like some of the best

backgrounds, some of the best Star Wars backgrounds,

if not regular backgrounds in comics ever are

in this. It's just so good. It really is. No,

don't know if I go that far with ever it's tough.

Well, if you'd we consistently review comics

with ridiculously good art truth Be the Transformers

be it Capella on Batman be it anyway Be right

there. It's fantastic. Yes Again, I completely

recommend this to Star Wars fans and non Star

Wars fans the first two volumes are more than

worth it Absolutely, they are. If you enjoy comics

or you enjoy stories, it doesn't even require

intimate knowledge of Star Wars. It's nice, you

know, it'll enhance it, but it's not necessary.

It still tells a really good story. Absolutely.

And so this basically leads up to the Vader -Down

crossover. So, like I said, the Star Wars series

by Aaron assume is also leading to the Vader

down crossover because that's when they both

cross over so we'll have to do Vader down after

this at some point But yeah, I mean even even

reading this again like when I was reviewing

it just not just to review when I was reviewing

it issue by issue reading it in Reading single

issues and trying to review them as a single

issue when it's a part of a larger story is very

difficult I know people do this all the time,

but people also jump to conclusions that don't

really happen or That kind of thing. Yeah, we

talk about it all the time, too. So many of these

writers, you know, Aaron, who we've mentioned

a couple of times is definitely one of them,

or Rukka, who we've reviewed it as well. Most

of these writers write essentially for trade.

Their stories are just meant to be more long

form rather than the old days where it was kind

of one off individual issues. It's a lot like

the differences in television. You know, it used

to be TV shows were solved in half an hour. To

an hour and then it resets in the next episode

Versus now there's so many shows that are serialized

where one thing just leads to the next and you

just keep going Yep, absolutely What would you

rate volume to five I'm right there with you.

It is can't find it can't find a thing I didn't

like or an issue or a portion. So yes Same here.

And I love the, like the last parts of issue

12 or whatever chapter 12, whatever you want

to call it. Uh, a lot of the art around Vader

and just focusing on him. Oh, it looks so good.

You talk, we talked at the beginning of this

podcast about how sometimes, uh, you can't get

expressions out of Darth Vader. Salvador Larocca

got a lot of expressions out of Darth Vader in

these first two volumes. This could work with

body language and the like with Vader. And that's

tough. Yeah, absolutely. I think that's gonna

do it for us. We're gonna continue on with Autobotly

August with episode 367. Heather Hahi Prime will

be joining me for that with Orion Pax, Thundercracker,

and Megatron. And then after that, Ryan and I

will finish the Transformers spotlights with

Bumblebee, Trail Cutter, and Hoist. And then

we will finish partly Lost Light and Optimus

Prime Volume 4. And then my good buddy Jeremy

Fine came back and we talked about Sex Criminals

Volume 3 in Episode 369. And then in episode

370 Ryan and I will tackle the Chaos Bringer

in Transformers Unicron. Unicorn? Oh. Yes, yes,

Unicorn. Yes, that's right. He does have a...

Timely to do... Timely to do Unicron with him

wrecking havoc on wallets now. Yeah, exactly.

Yeah. Please tell me you're not getting that.

No, so I just don't know where to... Put it.

Put it would be the problem. Yeah. I've always

said I love huge transformers. Might be too large.

That's tough. So that's what's coming up here

on the podcast. I hope everyone's liking what

we're doing this year in 2019. I looked back

on where we started in episode 335. We started

with... Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Soul of

the Dragon, which is a one -shot from Boom Studios

focusing on an older version of Tommy Oliver

and that kind of thing. We started with that.

We've done more Marvel coverage. Yeah, we've

done more Marvel coverage this year than we have

in the entire six years of the podcast. So, I

guess this year it's make mine Marvel. Who knows?
