About this Episode

Mike Blanchard and Tom Deja explore why letting stories end when they should is better storytelling, then dive deep into what's broken with modern fandoms. They discuss sequels that shouldn't exist, the pressure to like things in lockstep, gatekeeping versus inclusivity, and why fandom works best when it enhances your life rather than replacing it. The conversation touches on everything from Ghostbusters to Superman to sports rivalries—examining how fandoms have shifted from being outsider spaces to mainstream culture, and what we've lost and gained in that transition.

Hey, this is Steve blue and you are listening

to the geek cast radio network You're listening

to the geek cast radio network Unleash the geek

in you. Hey, who turned out the light? Oh, well,

I guess we are better off in the dark, aren't

we? I heard that groan. I'm gonna redo that.

Technical difficulties. Let's move on, shall

we? Hey, who turned out that light? Oh, well,

I guess we are better in the dark. Aren't we?

Hello and welcome to Geekcaster Radio. This is

episode 194. I'm of course Mike Blanchard, otherwise

known as TFG1Mike online. Yes, I use nicknames

and all that good stuff. I am very excited to

have a discussion with Mr. Tom DJ. Hello, sir.

Happy Earth, Wind, Fire, and Baitrock Day to

you, sir. Yes, as well to you. It is a September

to remember. That's right. And there are no Dick

Graysons about it. No, no, no, no. Yes. I'm starting

a movement people. I don't know what we have.

We had actually two Batman days this year. Did

we? Because we had they did a Batman day around

July, wasn't it? Yeah. No, around June for the

on the anniversary of the 1989 film. That's right.

So Batman is a big big figure people If you're

a Batman fan every day is a Batman day That's

right. So it has been pointed out to me that

the day that we're recording September 21st is

the day that is cited in the Earth Wind and Fire

song September classic song. Yep And also, I've

decided that, well, okay, you can keep the Bat

Park part, but we're going to celebrate the great

Batroc the Leeper, the great George Batroc, one

of the baddest of the badass. And besides being

very, very French, he's a little bit more fandom

friendly in terms of his physique. You know,

he's a little chunky. He's a little chunky, so.

And I think he's one of the great. I say this

unironically, not like a joke. I think he's one

of the greatest characters in the Marvel universe.

So I think today, September 21st, shall be from

now on Earth, Wind, Fire, and Bait Rock Day.

There you go. So you say it so it shall be done.

That's right. I'm an elder statesman. I get to

make holidays. Well. It's better than having

a holiday for orange cheeto. Oh, sorry. Never

mind. You mean... You mean Tropicana Jesus? Yeah.

Okay. Anyway. Don't worry. You don't have to

hide here. That's... You know, that's the sad

thing is I feel insulted by calling him Tropicana

Jesus. He's more of Minute Maid Jesus, because

I always hated Minute Maid orange juice. No,

no, no. He's not even Minute Maid Jesus. He's...

The off -brand that the supermarket had that

was made entirely of concentrate, so it came

in little cans. So you took out the can, you

pulled the zip, took off the metal top, and dumped

the whole sludge. And then add water and let

it turn into something that kind of was orange

juice. Sort of. Yes. Yes. And the reason why

we're doing this episode of GeekCast Radio, folks,

is that Tom had posted something on Facebook.

It's a quote from another one of his friends,

Daryl Doucet, about storytelling. of dread media

yes uh... one half of dread media the other half

is desmond reddick uh... he posted a a quote

uh... about storytelling in and and all of that

thing in uh... we will get to the fandom discussion

later but basically the quote is letting the

story and when it ends is the best solution and

you had added lenal true words in urban school

and i'm looking at you disney cbs paramount one

of others well you get it you get the idea uh...

what is so funny as i believe it was uh... i

think it was on his trailers actually have a

small part of this they did a marvel studios

logo where it basically says the never -ending

story and you're right i mean in in he's in darrell's

right as well uh... We live in a world now where

sequels and prequels and and and third movies

and seventh movies and tenth movies like there's

a difference in creating your own universe and

there's a difference in having a single like

The thing I always come back to is I was four

years old when the first Beverly Hills cop came

out I never I had never actually saw the film

and I'm sure my listeners have heard me say this

plenty of times I didn't see it. I was too young

at the time. And I saw Beverly Hills Cop 2 first.

So I liked the second one first because I saw

it. I was exposed to it first. I have obviously

since then seen the first film and I do love

the first film. However, in 1994, almost four,

five, six years after the second one, you did

not need Beverly Hills Cop 3. No. But and you

definitely don't need Ghostbusters 3 Some 25

years after Ghostbusters 2. Yes. I've said it

come at me Yeah, and and I don't need this whole

oh well discussion of what I guess they call

the recoil now mm -hmm the recoil yeah a sequel

that ignore oh I I love the first Halloween It

is a masterful film. It is an essential film

if you are a horror fan like myself. But the

mess they have made with the fact that there

are now four timelines makes my head hurt. And

the fact they're going to go on and do sequels

to the requiel, I'm very upset. I am I will I

will freely admit the horror stuff that is all

you guys I am so like when I was a kid Like my

well again you got to remember folks for those

of you young people out there 1985 86 you didn't

have immediate digital download for media after

it got out of theaters. We had to wait a year

and a half or more before we got a VHS or Betamax

tape of whatever. At the minimum, we had to wait

three months. Yeah, at the maximum it was like...

Yeah. Longer if it was a popular film, because

they wanted to try to keep popular films to Christmas

release. As a so that people could buy them as

a as a gift. Yep, but the minimum was three months

And also if you was our film you kind of timed

it So that's why so many horror films these days

come out in not in August rather than October

To time it for Halloween so you can buy digital

months. It'll be out up for streaming In time

for Halloween parties. Yes. Yeah. Well you know

for me somewhere between eighty six eighty seven

design you can correct me if i'm wrong and i

don't remember off the top of my head i've had

a lot going on lately right original nightmare

on elm street the very first one the good one

that came out in eighty five correct uh... what

we can look it up we are on the internet on the

on the intro web this you know uh... I was old

enough that I remember when we didn't have the

intro webs. Yeah, so am I. I'm not as old as

you are, but... I remember, back in the old days,

we didn't even have VHS. Oh, okay. Well, now

you're just really dating yourself, Mr. Elder

Statesman. Look, I'm 55 years old. Like I said,

I'm an Elder Statesman. Nightmare on Elm Street

was 84, so I was one year off. Okay, but the

thing is well, you're in Chicago, right? Yeah,

so you actually probably it actually was probably

released there on 84 but if you were living in

a smaller area in America you might not see that

film till the year later because what used to

happen instead of wide release day and date and

Nightmare on Elm Street was a film that was done

by an independent studio at the time. They'd

make a set number of prints, and first they'd

go to the big cities, New York, Chicago, LA,

and then they would... They would call do it

what they call road show where they would take

that same print and take it to Wichita and Albuquerque

and smaller cities and even smaller areas so

you could theoretically see a film a major Landmark

film like nightmare a year or two later. Yeah

My point in bringing it up... I'm sorry if I'm

being... No, no, no. The old man shouting at

clouds. No, no, no. Absolutely. I agree, and

you're right. My point in bringing it up is that

movie, when I saw it on VHS in 86 or 87 as a

six and seven year old, scared the shit out of

me, literally. And I know Freddy is one of the

more, not necessarily most horrific horror characters,

but to a six and... Well, in the first one he

is. Yeah. In the first one he's downright scary.

It's not till, really it's not till about three.

The first of several attempts Wes Craven did

to kill the beast. But a great one directed by

Chuck Russell who is an amazing filmmaker who

did not do enough work. You can get me talking

about the blob remake all day. The thing is is

that yes, then they started it with most of these

horror franchises In the early 80s. It starts

out with us empathizing with the victims But

then with later films it starts becoming more

about the killer. Yeah Yeah, and I was scared

out of my mind, and basically Freddy Krueger

is the reason why I'm not a horror fan. Okay,

that's fine. Because it scared the crap out of

me. And on top of that, I'm not a blood, guts,

and gore kind of guy. I see blood, I gotta go

run to the toilet, because I'll end up puking

everywhere. Even if it's my own, it's just not...

But yeah, so these... I really wish Hollywood

in general would just... try and the sad thing

is they try and we don't care because because

we're so used to oh french and i'm i'm guilty

of it too franchise franchise franchise franchise

franchise franchise whatever for transformers

batman superman You know Marvel Universe, whatever

you want to you know It's all about franchise

and knowing franchise characters and knowing

where it comes from yada yada yada Just once

or twice. I wish they would try now Right again

to see if they can come up with an original and

their ideas that go back right look at look at

Valerian Look at Jupiter ascending Okay, well

you're allowed not to but I'm saying these are

films that were attempting To do something new

These were original prospects But they were rejected

They were rejected outright. Although I'm willing

to bet if you took Valerian and put Star Wars

presents Valerian It would have done a whole

lot better because For some reason science fiction

fans are very resistant to new ideas Which is

why of course well, I mean that that's that ties

in with something with the fandom manifesto Yeah,

but the thing is I think that's one of the reasons

why the last Jedi it was so reviled because Rian

Johnson decided to fit some diff things that

were different and tell a story that wasn't a

chosen one narrative, which is what Star Wars

has become. Yeah. I did not... I'm in the minority

when it comes to Last Jedi. Mm -hmm. I did not

overtly enjoy it, but I didn't outright hate

it either. I'm right in the middle on it. I like...

For me, personally... Yes? I like Return the

best. Okay, that's fine. out of a mall. I like

to return the best. It's very, I'm very public

about the fact that I am not a Star Wars fan

at all. Okay. And I am, but I'm not like this,

yeah, I'm not like this super, like, for me a

die -hard franchise would be Transformers. Right.

As happy as I am that Michael Bay has put all

this attention into the property that I love.

Some of those movies most of those movies are

I Couldn't even make it through the last one

I made it ten minutes in and I had to stop the

thing Are you talking about the last night or

bumblebee the last night bumblebee was good because

it wasn't Michael Bay It was his production company,

but it wasn't him in the director's chair But

yeah, I mean like the whole lettuce story Be

done like Okay, I'm gonna. I'm gonna take some

films that I know that are just single stories

here, okay terminal velocity with Charlie Sheen

say what you will Charlie Sheen and Wesley I

think it's Wesley's tonight Well anyway terminal

velocity passenger 57 drop zone Hell Tom Cruise

in 1988 cocktail all of these films mentioning

our single one -shot stories that do not need

sequels and to my knowledge, unless they're done

over in India somewhere that is not here in the

US, have not had actual sequels or prequels or

this or that. One of my favorite, one of my favorite,

I guess you could call it a dark science fiction

film, Alex Preuss's Dark City. There's no need.

Several years later, I was involved with a company

that had licensed all the new line properties.

Mm -hmm, and they were trying to get me to write

a sequel to Dark City and I'm like why you don't

need it It's a self -contained story. It is finite.

Mm -hmm And that's part of the problem now is

these days we are getting films that are no longer

finite that are assuming An interest that may

not be there so You see the the puppeteer so

to speak on okay. Here's something a character

We're introducing that's going to be important

in the third film No You know yeah, I saw it

earlier this year. I saw the reboot of Hellboy

Mm -hmm, and I did it because I am a major fan

of Neil Marshall who also did Dog Soldiers and

The Descent and Doomsday and a great historical

film called Centurion. And I wanted to support

him. I wanted to put my money where my mouth

is and say, OK, I like this director. Here is

my money. I couldn't get into the film because

I kept seeing the franchise bait. Like, here's

Thomas Hayden Church in the background as Lobster

Johnson. He'll be important next time. Tell a

good story. Yeah, tell a good story. Tell a good

story. People seem to forget that the first Star

Wars, I'm not calling it a new hope, people,

deal with it. was a finite story. It had a beginning,

a middle, and an end. And it, by the way, had

a message that was entirely antithetical to what

the franchise has become. Which is, here's this

kid, just this average ordinary kid, swept up

in a grand adventure. And it has become... A

chosen one. I hate the chosen one narrative so

much. But that's neither here nor there. It just

doesn't... The fact that they thought, and by

they I mean Mr. Lensflare over there. Yeah. The

fact that he thought that he had to make his

first Star Wars movie basically a rip -off of...

Star Wars 1977 of doing the shit like oh blah

blah like No Okay, here's something now keep

in mind like I said I'm on record you can find

me in many places Saying I don't like Star Wars.

Mm -hmm, but here's the thing when it was set

up Theoretically, it could be an infinite amount

of things. Yeah It was a setting, it was a playground

upon which so many different stories could be

told. And in fact, during the expanded universe

period, it became a place where many different

stories were told. That's how we got the Thrawn

trilogy. Right, that's how we got, was it Mary

Jade is the character that everybody loves? Yep.

I have a similar story because I'm a Doctor Who

fan. And we had what we call the wilderness years

between 1989 to 2004. And the BBC embraced fandom,

so to speak. I mean, they literally went to a

fan who was making audio dramas for fun and said,

we like what you're doing. We'll give you a license

so you can continue doing it officially. Yeah.

The other thing is now is that since Disney took

over It seems like it's a very closed set. It's

like oh the first yes the first film was a soft

reboot of it was a soft remake of the original

Star Wars Then they made a fit one of these film.

I can't stand these films the films that answer

questions. You never asked mm -hmm, so they did

a film at Answering the question. How did they

get the plans for the death star? We didn't need

to know that The best part about rogue one was

the ending when you see Vader on the ship. That

was the best part. I'm sorry. What's going to

remind you that Vader is not a tragic figure.

Vader is a fucking badass motherfucker. Yeah,

exactly. He's there to wreck your shit. Yep And

then after that we got Rian Johnson who is Like

I said, trying to do a lot of different things

and primarily getting back to the original idea,

telling people that Ray, that's her name, right?

Ray is just a bystander swept up in a larger

adventure. But everybody hated that idea. Everybody

hated the idea that Ray wasn't part of the Chosen

One line. And now we're get and then we get a

solo Which is of course once again answering

questions, we don't really need answered. Yeah,

I mean how Han Solo met chewy it's they're just

there But I'm sorry, I'm ranting it's one of

those things where Yeah, we didn't need rogue

one because you have to keep the mystery alive

of Star Wars like in Star Wars Kenobi says oh

I used to work with you know I used to be a Jedi

with your father or whatever I don't have the

quote off the top of my head right off whatever

point is we were told things happened right would

I have loved to have seen a cool movie showing

some of those things for me Mm -hmm, and I I

know this is gonna be controversial for most

listeners not for you because you don't really

care Yeah, Revenge of the Sith while it's not

the it's my favorite of the three Frequels I

don't feel it's a bad. I feel it's a good bookend

up to Star Wars because of seeing how Anakin

becomes Darth Vader But That's all I needed as

far as answers and I got those X number of years

later After I had originally seen the first one

of asking the question as a kid. Oh, well he

met him as a He met his dad as a you know as

a Jedi well I'd like to see that movie in 1990

of course that was never gonna happen obviously

But this whole what happened to the plans that's

stupid solos solos solo film I Will give rogue

one this credit It was trying to do a different

flavor in that it was trying to do basically

a spy movie in the universe of Star Wars. This

is what, for some reason I woke up and found

that I was in control of Star Wars. First thing

I'd be like, are you sure you want me in control

of Star Wars? But what I would do is rather than

do this kind of self cannibalization, I would

go to various directors and writers and say,

okay, my universe is yours. What do you want

to do with it? I'd go to Alex Proyas, to Guillermo

del Toro, to Neil Blomkamp. You know, people

who have a vision. I'd go to Jordan Peele. I

would love to see what a Jordan Peele take on

Star Wars would be. I would love that. That would

be interesting. It would be. Yeah, but that's

the thing. It would be interesting and it would

be new because Star Wars is one of those things

like Star Trek, which is which has managed itself

better until recently. Yeah. Where. You can literally

create a franchise because the setting is so

expansive. Yeah. The cool thing about. About

honestly, comic books. where I prefer these these

stories are told in comics is that you can kind

of tell a better story like I read the 2015 Kieran

Gillian Darth Vader series when this is when

Marvel first when Disney and Marvel and all that

and everything else when they first got the Star

Wars books I liked that series because it showed

an original adventure even though it was after

the star war the nineteen seventy seven star

wars film it didn't have to play case any of

the fate of its own story it karen gillian as

the writer new he knew the voice of vader he

knew what to do he knew how to tell the story

that he wanted to tell in that universe same

thing with star trek uh... EW is doing great

stuff with Star Trek. I just recently and this

is a couple years old now I just read Star Trek

Green Lantern volumes one and two which right

I know a lot of people are like ooh crossovers

How does that universe play with that universe

and blah? I don't care. It's cool. Yeah, it's

cool They they made a thing in the plot of how

it crossed over and whatever kind of thing so

it didn't you know it was just cool see and it's

the People forget that these are stories. Yeah,

so there can be literally different takes on

the same Premise yeah, so you can have the light

night Yeah, to use name to use Batman as a symbol

you can have the light night you know the Adam

West Batman from 66 and you can have the socially

conscious kind of quote -unquote realistic Batman

of Neil Adams and Denny O 'Neill and you can

have the Very impressionistic Batman of Tim Burton

and they can all be side -by -side They can all

coexist that you don't have to say that's not

real. That's not real or Try to coalesce them

all into one continuity. Yeah my favorite bat

batman bruce wayne comic book since i've been

doing posses i've been doing my comic podcast

the pullback since twenty thirteen so the lesson

half on the seven years my favorite batman story

actually my two favorite batman stories are actual

different stories uh... they are uh... They were

to me, because I came into it late. Basically,

one is before the New 52, and one exists outside

of the New 52. They tried to do it in the DC

black label thing. So the first one is before

the New 52, the original continuity when they

put Dick Grayson as Batman in Gates of Gotham.

That story written by Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins,

and I think Sean Murphy was on that. I forget

off the top of my head. I rather liked that whole

run, because you had an inversion of the huge

Batman Robin. Right. In that. Right. Batman was

the bright was the bright sunny one and Robin

was the dour one. Yeah. Yeah. And then again

Sean Murphy's his original story which is now

going on to it's it's sequel thing Batman white

knight and now he's doing Batman curse of the

white knight basically flipping the thing would

wear Oh Batman's really the villain ha ha ha

Joker Joker Jack Napier is really the hero I

love that I thought that was so interesting it's

not your traditional Batman must go punch, Batman

must go throw a grappling hook, Batman must hang

Derek Ferguson off the edge of the Empire State

building until he tells Batman the truth or something,

you know. I mean, it was original. It was dark

and edgy. Yeah, exactly. That's OK. This whole

I was joking about it earlier for this whole

thing about Batman Day. This thorn got under

my under my my skin so to speak when I realized

that Batman probably isn't the kind of character

you should be celebrating. He is a young man

who suffers so badly from post -traumatic stress

disorder that he refuses to have a normal life

and devotes his time to punishing criminals and

not by Go into the police department and becoming

a policeman and that a detective and working

in the system. No working willfully outside the

system Yeah, and that's not the kind of it of

course. He's dark and edgy It's like like the

Punisher the Punisher is dark and edgy But there

that's not the kind of message you want to give

to people On the other hand we have Superman

who is the embodiment? of the American immigration

experience. Hey, thanks for having me in your

country. Here is the stuff that I can do. How

can I make this country a better place? We don't

celebrate him. We always look at him as a power

set, not as what the character is trying to say.

And I think the problem with Batman and Superman

is that even though Superman technically started

DC Comics because well I mean maybe that I don't

know but point is 1938 you know first you know

first Superman comic from DC was Action Comics

All of that, Batman didn't come for a year later.

Here we are, both franchises, Superman and 81

years later, Batman at this point, 80 years later,

and Batman is the biggest seller because his

parents got shot in an alley and that's more

relatable than someone coming from a different

place to a new... We are all ancestors of people

that came from Europe and the... uh political

bases will tell you we are all we are all from

immigrants yeah okay this country was founded

by a bunch of immigrants who didn't like the

other country their original country so they

said okay let's let's go make our own world it's

it's crazy to me it's just crazy um but i i do

wish there were more stories out there in specifically

film that would just be I missed the one shot

movie like you take which is it's scary but it

ain't it ain't horror it's more suspense through

than anything else. 1991's The Hand That Rocks

the Cradle. Curtis Hansen, yes. That movie scared

the living crap out of me too, not as much as

Freddy. I had a super crush on Annabelle Sciorra.

Yeah, absolutely. She went on to a low on order

at one point or another. hey mike bailey we're

talking about it uh... we're talking about it

where are you uh... if we're talking about superman

and law and order this is right outside families

i know right i mean the only only the whole and

but the only thing we're missing is john shay

is lex luther uh... uh... the other day There

were many things wrong with Lois and Clark, don't

get me wrong. John Chay as Lex Luthor was definitely

not one of them. And the reason why I bring this

up is because, once again, the first two episodes

of your old show that I listened to was the two

-parter with Michael Bailey, I'm talking Superman

because you guys at one point were talking about

Lois and Clark and I - As a 13 year old in 93,

I gravitated to Dean Cain and Terry Hatcher as

Lois and Clark as Superman and Lois Lane. You

can't forget that Terry Hatcher as Lois Lane

was at one point the most downloaded woman on

the internet. She was a major sex symbol. Yep.

I love that show. I still love that show. I don't

care what and again This is gonna kind of edge

towards fandom. We'll get into that here in a

second But you know, I don't care what anyone

says. I don't care how bad What was it? The fourth

season the yeah the The Luthor tapes. Yeah The

first the first season is is excellent because

it's got it's got a great story arc. It's got

John Shay, who is not, the reason why most people

will not know who he is now is because he's a

theater actor. He was not interested in being

in movies and television. He does these things

for friends of his. He was friends with the show

runner at Lois and Clark and said, okay, I'll

do Uthor. There are two series that I know him

from and that's it. Lois and Clark. Yes. And

you next cuz he played adam in mute next he played

the good guy he played the professor xavier type

of role And i just i love him and lois and clark

is as the villain i love him in mutant x is kind

of sort of a hero kind of thing right and So

going back you know listening to that that two

episode arc of better in the dark i'm like oh

okay, well i hear their points let me go back

and i spent like a week and a half i went through

all four seasons back yeah and i'm like Okay,

I can kind of see where they're coming from,

but I still like it. I think my only thing wrong

with liking what yeah. Yeah This is another this

is another problem with fandom. We shall we shall

say this fandom is broken. Yes But one of the

things that really bothers me is that You have

to be in lockstep with everybody You cannot have

a dissenting opinion Okay, here's here's my response

to that if you don't have a dissenting opinion

or a difference of opinion Then we all might

as well be man hunters and be mindless frigging

robots Because we would all be the same thing

and we would all have the same same same same

same sense. No No, like Okay, if you an opinion

is what makes life entertaining exactly Like

okay again, this is another one of my things

and it's yes, I Don't want to go down a whole

road with this because I just don't but I'm just

gonna say this I Have been a Nickelback fan since

before they got famous you poor soul, but oh

Right to like what you like So it's like, anytime

I try to share that with people, they're like,

oh, they suck, or oh, blah, blah, blah, or oh,

this or all that. So basically, I know myself

and one other person that are actual Nickelback

fans. And the band wouldn't be where they are

without the fans. I mean, there are tens of millions

of people going to the shows that that band put

on, just like there were tens of millions of

people that, and I'm not. Not comparing the quality

of the Beatles to Nickelback I'm saying that

Tens of millions of people in the 60s went to

Beatles shows right tens of millions of people

between 2000 and now have gone to Nickelback

shows, right? You know it Whatever it hell people

tens and thousands of people went to puddle of

mud shows. I have no idea why They wanted them

to smack their ass. I You know, it's like earlier

this month corn release new album and i'm like

i know corn still around really yeah exactly

gee i thought we were rid of them i thought thought

that we just wiped the slate slate cleaning of

all the new metal butt rock people no we still

have the freak on the leash I guess so. And everybody

making a big deal and I get it don't get me wrong

I get it it's it's basically metal versus pop

but every single website on the internet making

a huge deal of tool overtaking Taylor Swift in

album sales or whatever that was I'm like are

you silly really this is the thing that you're

you're okay but you know what I think I've been

referring to myself as metal adjacent, because

even though I'm not a metal fan, because I associate

so closely with Deseretik these days, I know

a lot about the fandom and a lot about the music.

And most metalheads that I know are some of the

most inclusive fans I've ever met. They don't

care if you're gay or black or Chinese or, you

know, Venusian doing the Charleston on Mars with

Neptunians. If you want to rock, they are good

with it. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, here's the thing

before we get into your modern fandom manifesto

here in a minute. But here's the thing. If I

like a song and you like a song, hey, we like

a song together, whatever band, whatever, whatever.

I don't care. I'm sitting here talking to you.

I'm having a fun time doing it. I'm having a

very enjoyable time where we're, you know, having

a conversation. We have different opinions. If

I hadn't seen a picture of you before, Tom, I

wouldn't know or care if you were black, white,

green, or purple, or if like... Any of this orientation

crap? I'm like, no, I don't care. Am I talking

to somebody that has a similar opinion to mine?

Or that, hey, how about, let me just, Out of

Touch by Hall and Oates is one of my favorite

songs. If you don't like it, fine, great. But

if I sat there and mentioned that to somebody

and they say, hey, I remember that song, I like

it too. Well, hey, good, we can strike up a conversation.

Great, you have commonality. And yeah, and have

a good time about it. It doesn't always have

to be, oh, I don't like that song, I like this

song better. I'm like, oh god. Alright, so earlier

this year, you wrote this thing up. Out of frustration.

Out of frustration. Did this help you after you

wrote it and put it out there on the internet?

Did this help you ease some of your frustration?

It doesn't seem to have mattered much. It is.

The most viewed thing on my website, DJ's Domicile

of Red. But I mean, I did this because I was

just so frustrated with where it was going, particularly

in regards to how inclusive it was going from

being inclusive to an exclusive place. And the

thing is, for the longest time, see, I'm old

enough that I remember when being a fan was a

bad thing to most people. And since 2000, I would

say probably 2008. The dual release of The Dark

Knight and Iron Man. Yep, Marvel versus DC. Marvel

versus DC. Since 2008, we've been the dominant

pop culture. We are in control. Not gonna last

eventually it will it will decline and a new

pop culture will take our place and we will be

judged not by our best but our worst and We have

seen our worst pretty badly in the last two or

three years Yeah, the toxicity of some fandoms

is getting out of control And I think it's causing

certain properties to be Shuffled away to use

the Marvel The Marvel universe has a has an example

at the end of endgame Captain America says Here

Anthony Mackie is my shield. You will make a

great Captain America. I'm going to retire Mm

-hmm. Okay, and I'm like, okay Cool, this has

happened in the comics. I would love to see Anthony

Mackie as Captain America, but no. They're shuffling

him off to the... Hulu show or whatever it is.

Disney Plus. Yeah, that's what it is, Disney

Plus. And they're not calling it Captain America,

they're calling it the Falcon and the Winter

Soldier. Because I think Disney is afraid if

they did an Anthony Mackie Captain America movie,

There a large portion of their fan base would

be up in arms because that's not our Captain

America and don't start on this Marvel No, I

love this Marvel. This Marvel is one of my favorite

characters You know rogue stole her powers Yeah,

I the whole Captain Marvel thing is just It's

just silly. I mean if I ever if ever got to write

for Marvel One of my dream projects, and I've

talked about this before, is a comic called Marvels,

with an S, and it would be just Monica Rambeau

and Carol Danvers acting as mentors to Kamala

Khan. So, mostly, let's go for frozen yogurt

and shopping today. how are things over in jersey

city kamala and then every once in a while you

know whirlwinds show up and they have to hit

him but i love kamala khan and i love the fact

that she is a pakistani she is a muslim and they're

not that's not all she is she is a separate person

from her background her background is an integral

part of her But it's not like in the 70s when

every black character had had black in his name.

Yeah It's the same thing with the Green Lantern

Corps I love Jessica Cruz. I Love Jessica Cruz

to death. Okay, you'll have to explain. I've

I don't think I've heard the name before okay

Has you know for some reason for such a backwater

planet? the Green Lantern Corps just loves recruiting

humans. Because you've got Hal, who should not

have come back. Yeah, I said it. And I'm a Hal

fan. I'm a Hal fan. I devoted a chunk of my life

to talking about Hal Jordan comics. So don't

tell me that I'm a hater. He should not have

come back. We have Jon Stewart. Cool. We have

my favorite Guy Gardner. We have Kyle Rayner.

And since the new 52 launched, they've added

two new human. Simon Baz, who in the usual tin

-eared DC way of promoting things, the first

picture of him He's wearing a mat mass. It looks

like a like a robbers mask and he's holding a

gun But Simon Bas is a I don't know what nationality

is but he is it's a there was a big point that

he was Muslim and Then there was Jessica Cruz

who is you know Hispanic okay, and I particularly

what Christopher Priest did with her in Justice

League, I love what they did with her. I'm all

for her having a bigger role in the DC Universe.

But yeah, I skipped Justice League. Look, for

some, I think part of it is because we are living

now in a time where negative emotions rule. This

is a country that was built on hope, but right

now it's being run on fear. And that has made

some people in fandom emboldened. It's also being

run on stupidity, but continue. Oh, this is idiocracy

writ large. There's a deep cup for you folks.

But um the thing is we now have these people

saying We don't want You know a woman Captain

Marvel. We don't want a you know a black You

know let let create your own characters, but

the thing is especially in DC where DC was built

on legacy Mm -hmm characters carrying on the

tradition of older characters Why not mm -hmm

why Why not have a black green lantern and a

Hispanic green lantern and a Muslim green lantern?

Why do we have to have? Why? Why did you had

a Irish Mexican green lantern that you replaced?

With the whitest of the white bread? Yeah, I

mean, I have because again, I'm. Only got into

comics full -time when I started the other podcast

right years ago I've read comics here there over

my lifetime, but I was like for me. It was cartoons.

It was movies It was television right so for

me Kyle Rayner and John Stewart from just what

I mean Kyle kind of premiered in Superman whatever

anyway point is like when how came back I'm like

Really? Jesus Jordan, really? Come on. Like,

oh god. I am not a Danny Diego fan. At all. It's

funny, it's like every two, three years they

try to reboot the universe again. It's kind of

like they keep breaking the same vase and keep

trying to put it back together. And it's not

working. And it's not working because of course

eventually you're not putting it in the right

places. I've seen several interviews with Dan,

I've seen him at several, not at several conventions,

but I've seen him several convention interviews,

several other interviews, that kind of thing.

For the longest, like, I don't think I'll ever

get an interview with that guy, because for the

longest time in the beginning of the other, the

comic podcast, I'm like, oh, and the DC publishers

are Jim Lee and Dan DiDildo. Oh, dear. I don't

give Dan DiDio this. As much as I hate... the

stuff that he does, I do love the fact that he

has an enthusiasm for comics. That's good. I

love the fact that he genuinely enjoys being

in charge of DC Comics. And I love the energy

and I love the enthusiasm. I just think it's

being used for very bad reasons. Yeah. But which

is why I gave up on comics in 2011. I've only

recently come back because I've discovered the

joy of Comikology. Comikology, yeah. Oh, man,

I can't... I can't reprint comics anymore. They've

spoiled me. That guided view? Oh, I mention it

every single time I do a review. Like, oh, being

able to go panel by panel and not knowing what's

happening. Right. Because I can't, I am so far

gone with medical and everything else. I just

had, like people know this, you don't, but people,

you might, well you know, you should, you should

have seen the post. I had brain surgery like

four or five months ago. You know, so I am just

like, even before the brain surgery, I think

I stopped doing print comics a year into the

other show. And I went full on Comixology and

I can't, because of my vision, whatever else,

I can't see the full page. I can see the full

page, but I have to zoom in? No. I'd just rather

use the guided view because that way it takes

me where it wants my eye to go and I'll just

follow it. And it's a, oh my God, I love Comixology.

And I will stay right here. That one, I've been

loving the Immortal Hulk because it's something

new using the old tool set. It manages to pay

homage to the TV series and pay homage to a lot

of the older stuff, but it is its own animal

and I've been loving it. The big problem I think

is of course We're back in that that cycle like

we had in the 90s where every six months Everybody's

story has to stop so they can participate in

the next big event event You know, it's like

I don't care about war of the realms. It's like

I'm reading I sometimes have been reading some

of these older comics out of order so I like

I'm reading a story an Avengers story and all

of a sudden we're in the middle of dark rain

or Secret invasion or whatever. Yep, and and

everything stops. Yeah That's that's one good

thing about some of the other publishers Take

IDW. For example, they do a lot of franchise

stuff, but they do it. Well, right They do they

were doing the whole oh, let's stop for event

thing with transformers But whatever the one

series I will recommend to anybody whether you're

a turtles turkeys You're a turtle fan or not

right is the turtle series from IDW because it

is a love letter to the entire You've got Tom

Waltz, Bobby Kernow, and Kevin Eastman, one of

the actual co -creators working on this thing.

They're about to hit a hundred issues. I think

the series started in 2011 or 2012. Almost nine

or ten years, yada yada yada. There might have

been an art -style thing I didn't like here or

there, but the story so far... It's been been

amazing. Well one of the what I've been refamiliarizing

myself with the work of Terry Moore Okay, Terry

Moore did this epic epic Wonderful kind of soap

opera. We're just where some dark noir stuff

would happen just in the middle of it called

strangers in paradise which should should be

a fucking movie or mini series on television

and I'm telling you who we get Katie Featherstone

and we get Katie lots from you know, legends

of tomorrow Katie Featherstone for paranormal

activity to play catch you and and Francine and

it will it will be wonderful trust me on this

folks, but she also is do like I'm right now

reading Rachel rising, which is a horror story

that he that he did And it's got the same sort

of wry sense of humor, but it's wonderful. Gary

Moore, I know people are glad that he did do

Strangers in Paradise, but he's so much more

than that. And I'm glad because he's a great,

great writer artist. But enough of that. But.

So your manifesto, do we want to go down the

list or? It's up to you. It's up to you. OK,

I'm the guest here. You're just. OK, well. I

don't know. I just want to make sure the guests

feel comfortable some of this stuff. Yeah, no

Respecting that people may like something you

don't like. Yeah, that that's um This is the

the the tenant in two bugs the hell out of me

equating financial success for artistic success

Yeah, yeah none none of the transformers films

the live -action films are Artistic success their

giant CGI money -making machines Michael Bay,

I don't think Michael Bay has made a decent film.

Maybe The Rock maybe The Rock. I kind of like

The Rock. I am partial to Armageddon. Okay That's

another one that is a one -shot movie. It does

not and did not need sequels. The only other

one that he turned into a franchise that I can't

wait until January 17th of next year, Bad Boys.

I know it didn't need it. I know it didn't need

it. And I'm automatically suspicious of any sequel

that is done more than four years after the original.

I am. Um, but uh, the thing is is that I remember

watching bad boys two and being so confused Really?

Yeah, and also I was like going Don't you have

a little more respect for the dead than throwing

them out? Apparently not apparently not no I

think the reason why is because they were Automatically

not respecting them in the first place because

they were cutting them open and putting the cocaine

in there. Yeah So yeah, I don't know I just I

saw that that trailer for the third one and I'm

like Come on man, you could get that buffed out.

No, you can get that buffed out Knock and talk.

Knock, knock. Mighty P .D., get down! What the

hell happened to knock and talk? Hands behind

your head right now. I got this. I'm gonna penetrate

this man's soul with my heart. What? Watch and

learn. Sir, I realize that you're scared. You

know, sometimes... How deep you think you got

in your soul? I'm done, Mike. I'm a bit tired.

Uh -oh, here we go again. You want your legacy

to be muscle shirts and body counts? I didn't

do all this. You didn't shoot anybody? Well,

come on, Cap. You know I shot some people. Yeah.

Fuck me! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! In these streets,

I never trusted anybody but you. I'm asking you,

man. Bad boys. One last time. One last time.

He's driving through a mall! We're not just black,

we're cops too! We'll pull ourselves over later!

You were right about the glasses! I've been telling

your ass for a year! Shit, Mike! These are like

HD! What's she gonna do? What's she gonna do?

What's she gonna do? What's she gonna do? What's

she gonna do? What's she gonna do? What's she

gonna do? What's she gonna do? What's she gonna

do? What's she gonna do? What's she gonna do?

What's she gonna do? like the first one yeah

I was surprised when they did the second one

in 2003 which is almost ten years after the first

one and now we're almost 26 years after the first

one now with the third one but supposedly this

is it this is the final and they've been teasing

bad boys three for a year like just like Top

Gun 2 oh why do I have barely a movie I have,

like, no... Okay, you take Bad Boys 3 and Top

Gun 2. Which one am I going to see in theaters?

Bad Boys 3. And that's sad because you would

think that I would want to see Top Gun 2 more.

No, it's not. Because, like you just said, Top

Gun is its own thing. It had an ending. It had

an emotional conclusion to Maverick's character

with his father throwing the whatever... dog

tags or eyeball or whatever they were often.

I'm sure you can't wait for Avatar 2. I've never

seen the first one. I've never seen the first

one, but the thing is the first one was, I mean,

I think the only person who wants Avatar 2 is

James Cameron himself. Yeah. But it's a franchise.

Mm -hmm. But how many people talk about it now?

It was one of the biggest money -making films

of all time, and nowadays nobody talks about

it. Well, you know why nowadays nobody talks

about it? Because Infinity War and Endgame crushed

it. Yeah, well, that too, but even before Infinity

and Endgame crushed it, you would think a film

that was that popular when it came out would

still be... We still talk about Ghostbusters.

We still talk about... The Matrix. Yep, which

is supposed to be getting a fourth movie. No,

no, no. No, if you want to do a sequel, do another

Speed Racer. I'll watch another Speed Racer.

Speed Racer was amazing. That's right, I said

it. Come at me. I haven't seen it, so I can't

comment. Yeah. It's just, I don't, I mean I think

unfortunately far too many people now equate

financial success with artistic success. Well

it must be, all these people want to see it,

it must be a good picture. You apparently never

saw Porky's. A lot of people saw that, it wasn't

a good picture. Okay, so we got I will celebrate

what I love and accept the loves of my fellow

fans exactly exactly Okay, so this is number

three on your list right and I have to say I'm

sorry I have to say I Completely respect any

of my friends that love Game of Thrones Yeah,

I however have zero interest in in it exactly

well the thing is i'm not a high fantasy guy

so i had no uh i was talking to jimmy palmiante

the other day yes i'm dropping names and he was

like why haven't you seen games because i don't

like that kind of story so the chances are i'm

already would be coming in predisposed to not

like it chances are i won't like it Here's my

thing with it, and this is with any HBO series

or any premium channel series. If I'm not already

subscribed to the channel, which I'm not, I am

not going to get a cable subscription to HBO

to watch one television show. Yes, yes, I understand

they are a whole network. Yes, I understand they

have a whole other part of their library. I completely

understand that, but I am not. going to go spend

money that I don't have. And it's getting worse

now because everybody's starting their own streaming

service, which has their own... I'm still amazed

the DC universe is still around. I really honestly,

I really am. Because that's talk about niche

programming. Yeah. And I'm sorry, but I love

the Titans. I remember very vividly picking up

the first issue of the new Teen Titans, the Bar

Wolfman, George Perez version, at a little shack

of a newsstand across Bay Boulevard and being

blown away by it. But the second I saw that trailer

and heard What's His Name go, fuck Batman, I'm

going. That's that's not free. Thanks. I respect

everybody who likes it, but that's not for me

Yeah Again the only reason okay, so all these

streaming services popping up Disney plus I kind

of understand because Disney has decades upon

decades of content with their movies and their

show. I kind of get that. DC Universe, I get

that it's a niche thing. My thing is, I started

out on streaming services with Netflix and I

eventually also got Hulu. Why can't, which is

what they did in the beginning, why can't the

studios and whomever Make the deals with the

things I already pay for right? Why are you going

to get me to pay for more shit that I cutting

out the middleman? That's true. Cutting out the

middleman and Disney thinks they've got enough

of a cloud because they own like something like

54 % Yeah of entertainment right now that they

can support their own thing, but I have CBS who's

basically building their streaming service on

the broken back of Star Trek. Okay? I don't know

what that stuff has been that they've been showing

on that film, on that network, but it is not

Star Trek. There, I'm at me. I can't. I can't

comment because I have not watched Enterprise.

I'm sorry, not Enterprise. Discovery. Thank you.

Discovery. I have lots of friends that watch

it and things like that. I personally can say

to the network itself, I did get one month free

trial or something or other, and I did look at

it. It's got some good stuff, but it doesn't

have ... It has the discovery of the same problem

that the JJ ate that that was the Kelvin universe

the Kelvin universe has which is It ignores what

Star Trek is It's true it is made Star Trek almost

indistinguishable from Star Wars In that Star

Trek is about heavy ideas Yeah, it is using that

its premise and its background to explore deep

scientific and Philosophical ideas. It's one

of the reasons why I love the Orville Was that

they kind of understand that and it even though

it is I see that I know it is it's Star Trek

fanfiction But they're but they're good stories

that deal with issues Whereas in discovery, it's

you know this starship fighting that starship

and everybody's a clone of everybody it's just

I Mean, I watched some of it because I love Michelle.

Yo Michelle. Yo an amazingly beautiful very talented

person and would probably kick my ass and I would

thank her for But I couldn't watch it, because

it was like, it was just all noise and thunder

and just sheer dumb fuckery. And this Picard

series, it's like, well, Picard has got to take

care of a chosen one. I hate the chosen one narrative

for people. It's been overused. It's time to

give it a rest, just like it's time to get Batman

a rest. We should have given start. We should

have not. decided to do a Star Wars film every

year, because the thing is, when you have something

every year, it stops being special. And also,

the story might not be able to support it. Yeah,

if the story doesn't support it, you're screwed.

Right. Well, that's why I have no problem with

the Marvel Universe. Because, first off, they

were building from a paradigm That was more soap

opera than We're done in once the novels it was

meant to be serialized Yeah, and secondly at

least at the beginning that not so much these

days They would just find a director. They thought

would be a good fit for a character say here

go make a movie and they got out of his way I

Still find it absolutely hilarious though that

The guy who played foggy nelson in 2003's daredevil

is the guy directing 2008 iron man. I love that.

He did it. I absolutely love the guy I just find

it absolutely hilarious And I love the fact that

he's still you know a major part of the Marvel

universe as happy as as happy Yeah, exactly that

that is so awesome So and the only the only real

decision that made me uncomfortable was casting

Marissa Tomei has Aunt May because you're not

supposed to want to fuck Aunt May. No, not really.

She's not there for that. I love Marissa Tomei,

but it just made me uncomfortable. Yeah, I think

it made a lot of us uncomfortable. It was a little

strange. Alright number four on the on the manifesto

here. I recognize that my fandom is there to

enhance my reality not replace it. Mm -hmm I

think far too often and this was always always

been a problem in fandom people use it has Just

escape right into it, but like close the doors

behind them Mm -hmm. Yes fandom is an escape

I love watching Doctor Who. I love watching,

you know, my horror movies. I love a lot of things.

I love, you know, but I don't do it, I don't

shun other people for it. And I don't let it

become a religion like some people do. I think

certain parts of why we are fans, like... Or

remember, fan comes from the word fanatic. True.

You have to be a little bit crazy to be a fan.

No, you have to be a little out there to be a

fan, and I accept that. But if your fandom, if

you're so obsessed with your fandom that you're

forgoing things like, you know, basic grooming

needs. Oh, no. That's... You've got... There's

a problem there. I agree with that. There is

a major problem there, but I'm sorry. I have

to shower at least twice a day if not, you know...

No, no, no, no, no. Yeah, fanaticism is... not

really a good thing. No, no. I mean, but just

like... One of my favorite quotes is from Johnny

Lydon. Anger is an energy. Fanaticism is an energy.

It's not good or bad, it's how you use that energy.

My anger with how the comics industry was going

led to me creating the Shadow Legion. So I used

that anger for positive reasons. But I think

for a lot of times people use it for negative

reasons. You know, people who are trying to actively

fuck with, you know, Captain Marvel's rating

score, Rotten Tomatoes score, that's negative.

Yeah, that's bad. You know, you don't have to

look. You don't want a Captain Marvel movie.

Don't go and see it. Exactly simple fact folks

simple which leads us right into the next thing

I will not keep patronizing genre stuff after

I find I'm not enjoying it Right we part of the

problem with fanaticism is we have a tendency

to coast Yeah loyal and that also comes from

the dark ages that I was born into Where people

look down on fandom? and so we didn't get a lot

of You know material yeah, I mean I'm very familiar

with the original Star Trek not because I I'm

a big fan of it. I'm not I respect it Mm -hmm,

but because it was for a long time the only Science

fiction I could get on a weekly basis, right?

the same thing with and obviously this came later

for me in syndication, but Same thing with Batman

66. Same thing with, like, Challenger the Super

Friends. Don't any of you people lie to me and

say that you never liked Batman 66. When you

are five years old, Batman 66 is the coolest

damn thing ever. And so don't lie. Even as a

five, six, and seven -year -old, my favorite

part is when they got to the Yvonne Craig Batgirl

series. But, you know, kind of not necessarily

going back, but the thing about how not every

genre item is made for me, that goes back to

my thing about Game of Thrones. Right. Okay,

so... I'm not gonna sit here and pay for HBO.

But if Comcast or Xfinity, whatever you want

to call them, if they offer me like a free HBO

weekend, I did this actually. I did try to check

out Game of Thrones when they offered that free

weekend. I made it 15 minutes into the first

episode of the first season and nothing happened.

They were walking in the snow. Nothing happened.

In 15 minutes. Understand folks I Frodo and his

band What are you doing? Oh, we're just walking.

Okay, so The only like fantasy kind of thing

Like legendary kind of thing I get behind is

the Arthur Ian legend, right? Not everything

but like I like right here right next to my desk

I need to actually go back and read it when then

in the 90s I found a copy of Steinbeck's the

acts of King Arthur and his noble knights and

I read it back then I recently on last year or

something found it again on on eBay and bought

it again because it was something that I had

read when I was like 13 but even the Arthurian

legends There are different interpretations.

Absolutely. Every single one of them, there are

different ones, yeah. Right. You could be a fan

of... You could be a fan of the Excalibur version

of, you know, the John Boram film. And still

not like the Michael Ritchie film. That doesn't

mean that the Michael Ritchie film doesn't deserve

to exist. Exactly. I just finished watching for

the first time the bbc merlin sydney the adventures

of merlin or whatever merlin series whatever

basically it's it's king arthur meets smallville

well actually is it is it's how it's described

in certain areas of the internet and i'm like

okay i love that they paid homage to the sword

in the stone from disney right animated film

because at one point they have merlin doing the

whole sweeping cleaning automatic magic broom

thing they do the the lady of the lake They do

the sword in the stone where he actually puts

it in the rock kind of thing. But it was an interesting

series. It was a different take. It was a different

thing. Right. And that's good. Exactly. That's

how things survive. Things that are as popular

as Star Wars, Batman, the King Arthur, Robin

Hood. We get a new Robin Hood every three years

it seems. But just because a new version comes

out doesn't invalidate an older version. You

can love the 1938, which is an amazing film,

and if any of you people are one of those people

that don't want to watch any film before you

were born, shame on you. But my mother made me

grow up on the three stooges I don't think there's

anything most anything that I will not watch

before I was born it Yeah, I mean again once

again We didn't have choices when I was growing

up in the 60s and 70s in that so we were exposed

to Stuff from the 30s and the 40s and the 50s

and we were exposed to all kinds of things Nowadays

everything is so specialized and compartmentalized

That you can choose to Basically box yourself

out and go like I'm only gonna watch You know

Harry Potter stuff I'm only gonna watch Star

Trek stuff. I mean you could literally with all

the expanded universe stuff you could do Watch

and read and experience Nothing, but Star Wars

in your life now Which is scary? But the point

is, though, is just because Disney says, well,

our continuity doesn't include the Expanded Universe

stuff doesn't mean you have to throw the Expanded

Universe stuff away. You could still love the

Expanded Universe stuff. Absolutely. And if you

don't like what Disney is doing. Don't watch

it. Don't watch it. And here's here's an idea.

Instead of belly aching and screaming at people

and harassing. the stars and the creative people

to the point where they shut down their Twitter

and Instagram accounts. You know who I'm talking

about here, people. Why don't you go out? Fan

fiction is not a dirty word anymore. Fan fiction

is fairly respected. So if you don't agree with

how your favorite franchise is made, Go on and

make your own. Create your own world. Exactly.

You know, there's nothing, I mean, I always,

you know, everybody, you know how like every

time somebody does like a New God series or a

Demon series, something they talk about how this

is a tribute to Kirby? I think Kirby would have

been more impressed if the people who worked

on that New God series. made up their own thing.

Because that's what Kirby was doing. Kirby was

an idea machine. Yeah. Kirby just could not stop

thinking. Same thing with Grant Morrison. I used

to joke that Grant Morrison wakes up and there

are three more characters sticking out of his

ass. You know, people don't... I understand that

you love what you love. And fandom is about loving

what you love. But... Don't let it blind you

to the fact that you can create your own stuff

Yeah, that's exactly that's how fandoms evolve

look at study study Star Trek fandom You know

Star Trek was the was a show that was saved by

its fans Mm -hmm, and the thing was it was kept

alive during the dark it meant there in the dark

ages the wilderness years for Star Trek, by fans

making their own stories, coming up with their

own stuff. Paramount, as you know, used to say,

as long as you don't do it for profit, make Star

Trek fan films. So yeah, be creative. There's

one downside to that though. Besides the whole

legality thing nowadays where like hey if you

decide to use this name which is my IP I will

sue you besides that Buddy of mine who I hope

to podcast with at some point or another James

James e talk I believe right the serial geek

He was working. He's he and his team have been

working on the return of faker. It's a he -man

cartoon essentially basically Collecting all

the original film Asian stuff by also trying

to tell a new story They just shut it down. They

just sent him a thing basically saying cease

and desist You cannot make this blah blah blah

and that I think is very discouraging to most

fans of Goel and Kree. Allow me to counterpoint

that. Okay. There is a long -standing tradition

called filing the security numbers off where

if you have problems with a property, if you

want to write about a property but the property

owners don't want you to write about them. There's

nothing wrong with writing those same stories

has past issues Okay, make it something well,

I mean for God's sakes Augusta left loved Sherlock

Holmes To a disturbing degree He could not write

new Sherlock Holmes stories. So he created solar

pods Okay He created a character who is so like

Sherlock Holmes. He might as well be Sherlock

Holmes. But there are enough differences, like

he sets his during the First World War. There

are enough differences that you can get away

with it. So guys, I really don't think that when

George Lucas was writing the first Star Wars.

I don't think he was thinking, I'm gonna have

people hanging on my every word. But I bet you

what he feels most proud of is the people who

were inspired by his work to make work of their

own, whether it's creative or scientific. I bet

you that he's the proudest of that. That's what

we gotta remember. These are not sacred texts.

But they can't inspire us To move forward. We

should be inspired. We shouldn't be Gatekeeping

and saying you can't come in Because women don't

understand Star Wars Star Wars is a man's game.

No, no That's just wrong. You know, I love the

fact that they got they got so upset with Rose

Tran who Was so ecstatic when she was cast Yeah,

and I'm like, there are no there are no Asian

people in Star Wars. How do you know that? It's

an entire galaxy Yeah, there are Asian people.

There's no reason you can accept floppy ear Draw

people, but you can't accept Asians Mesa be inclusive

too. Yeah Two things I wrote that I did not believe

I had to write down Okay Namely I will welcome

be welcoming to people interested in joining

fandom regardless of their sex orientation skin

color or experience Mm -hmm Fandom was was a

place for me or I got to talk I got to be with

my own Yeah back in the 70s and 80s where I could

talk for it still it still kind of is my therapist

Melissa is She's like a Harry Potter girl and

she's a theater. She's a theater geek and She

shares a lot of my interests. So I look forward

to our sessions because I don't have to censor

myself Unlike a lot of times when I'm talking

to my mother You know, um It's supposed to be

a place where you can be yourself Yeah, and all

too often, especially in the last two or three

years. It seems to be about so when you know

this can't women can't be fans or this one can't

be a fan of that one can't be if you know it

you know star wars had kick -ass women in the

very first movie yep okay so don't tell me that

uh having a female protagonist in these last

few films i'm surprised i'm talking so much about

star wars and you're not a star wars fan But

the thing is, it's a great example. It is, it

is very much, again, it's that all -inclusive

example because that galaxy is so large and you

look at all of the various, not just the human

characters, all of the, I guess you could say,

humans dressed up to be looking like other, like,

you know. Yeah, hell, we've got murder teddy

bears. Yeah. Murder bears. How helpful. I love

the Ewoks. I know everybody, there's a lot so

childish. They're murder bears! They kill people!

But yeah, it amazes me that people are condescending

to other races and in a lot of cases these incels

are very condescending and trying to keep out

female. That's how the fan survives, bringing

in new perspectives. It's it's so funny you mentioned

this so a couple years ago Transformers they

do this every year Hasbro does something sort

of they had a fan vote where they vote you vote

in a new character Someone who is an optimist

prime someone that isn't Megatron's a new character,

right? This character this female character named

wind blade one. Okay this whatever year it was

and This new writer at the time Margaret Scott

She got the chance to write the first wind blade

series right for me. I can't really see Any When

a female writer is writing a female character

What I cannot stand is I can't stand male character

male writers coming in and writing it after the

fact right her story was done right she They

finished her arc of Marigold writing that character,

but the character was still in the universe.

Right. But, you know, like, I don't know, there's

just certain things like... Let's go to another

rather large, somewhat notorious fandom, the

fandom of the X -Men. Yes. Okay. I kind of like

the character of Domino. I thought she was kind

of interesting. But I didn't get her completely

until Gail Simone got a hold of her. And I dread

reading the next iteration of Domino, which is

probably going to be done by a male writer. Because

the great thing about Gail Simone's Domino series,

which you should read if you have not read it

yet, is I kind of associated it with, it's like

Friends with the X -Men. You know, it's got that

kind of quippy, it's just a very good, very light,

although with serious overtones, and just fun.

That's what we need in comics, by the way, some

fun. I mentioned my friend Jimmy Pamiati earlier.

Back in the aughts. He and his wife Amanda Connor

lovely people both of them and I encourage you

to support anything they do We're assigned the

task of doing a powergirl series That powergirl

series is so much fun and I think a lot of it

is because there is a female perspective in that

in that writers room so to speak right and the

thing is Jimmy told me once Didio kept telling

him, make it darker. Make it darker. And eventually

they took him off the book and replaced him with

Jedwinnick, I think. Exactly. I mean, talk about

whiplash. Yeah. Now, the other thing that I cannot

believe I had to write. I will not treat fellow

fans I find sexually attractive and or are dressed

in a sexually attractive way any differently.

will not treat said fan in a way that makes him

or her uncomfortable or creeped out it freaks

me out that we have to actually have panels at

conventions about this that's a little crazy

yes it's okay so perfect example of this for

me is number of years ago I had seen a couple

two three four five years ago whatever was mm

-hmm I had seen one of the pages on Facebook

post it was like a Marvel or DC or Marvel and

DC page where they share cosplay of women and

men doing cosplay for characters and I found

I found this cosplay artist Mad Mel Madigan and

I interviewed her right I think she absolutely

looks completely hot in the outfits that that

she dresses up as like there was one thing where

she um she and her the guy friend of hers that

does does spider -man they re they recaptured

a j scott campbell cover where it's spidey kissing

the black cat and mj's got the shocked face kind

of thing right and it's mel doing both cosplays

it's her because it's it's you know it's photograph

whatever thing in in picture in picture whatever

like absolutely hot love the cover When I talked

to her, I talked to her like she was a human

being. I didn't say, oh my god, can I blah. No,

you don't do, you don't. You can have sexual

fantasies about certain characters or certain

people that dress up as characters, but that's

all it is. It's a fantasy in your mind. Do not.

Act on right anything don't do you have a hog

and you do something really you do something

uncomfortable? The thing is once it's back to

being inclusive Yeah, that you may you may think

of that woman dressed as Electra or You know,

um I'm trying to think of another you know, or

like Vampirella has You know a little lesser

than you that's just an item Yeah, but she's

a person So treat her as that first off you'll

probably get further Exactly If you decide if

you try to do one of these like sneaky like I'm

gonna go I'm gonna grope her when I say I'm gonna

hug her No, that's bad Yeah, that's criminal

people. Yeah, that's not no It floors me that

there are conventions that actually have etiquette

panels telling people this again this goes back

to my whole thing about and this is not just

this it's not just 2019 it's not last year it's

not just 2017 the last I honestly I would say

this last decade most people 80 % let's just

say 80 % of the US alone does not have common

fucking sense Like there are just certain things

that you do and don't do and those certain things

you don't do don't fucking do them because it's

not You would want to be hugged in a really inappropriate

way exactly hell I'd really like to be touched.

Well, yeah You know, yeah proximity. I've talked

about it on uh, you know better in the dark I

talk about I'm very free about my my mental illness

I do have a problem with proximity to people

and I know I wouldn't want to be treated that

way don't you know it's the golden rule people

I know you that's a foreign concept but treat

people like you would treat yourself exactly

so but yeah I couldn't believe I had to write

that so then we go to I will be open to new original

genre concepts which we kind of like we're referring

to when we first started talking about you know

like Valerian and Jupiter ascending these new

ideas that these people were coming and people

just were rejecting them out of hand yeah because

you know it doesn't have Star Wars on the on

the top yeah I mean like new original concepts

I might like okay take Okay, it's not an original

concept. It is kind of like the Merlin thing

I mentioned earlier. Right. I knew of that series,

but until it recently hit Hulu and then switched

over to Netflix, I had no idea. I watched it.

I loved it. I thought it was great. It was a

different take on whatever. But again, going

to original concept of, say, like something like

Paper Girls or um sex criminals or you know just

support that you know because that's new and

different material that isn't like you take Kyle

Higgins he did this is based off his short film

that he did the League he did the series called

Cowl with Image Comics you know superhero labor

union in I think 1960s Chicago kind of thing

he did Hadrian's Wall which was like a space

adventure kind of thing In the 80s, you know,

that's an original You know you take one of my

favorite comic book series of all time and one

of the few series I still have in paper form

Is by Karen Gillen and it's the phonogram series

Okay, which is a series about? magicians who

gained their power through their relationship

to popular music. Oh, wow. And it is a brilliant

thing. And once again, I'd never seen that before.

You know, the first the first arc was about the

spirit of Brit pop wanting to be reborn. And

I'm like, this is for me. Yes. But yeah, there

are all these, and that's the other thing, you

know, explore outside the big corporates. I guarantee

you that somewhere in this world with all the

independents in that, there is a comic or there

is somebody right now doing a movie, an independent

short film that is just right for you. And if

you can't find that, you know what? Do it yourself.

That sounded harsh, but you know what I mean.

Yeah, I know what you mean. You know what I mean.

Yeah, exactly What was the name of that series?

Phonogram. Oh, okay. There you go. Okay Karen

Gillan Karen Gillan. No, that's just suppose

I have I have a particular fetish for Scottish

redheads So it's like her and Shirley Manson

of garbage Karen Gillan, Kieran Gillan and Jamie

McKelvey who also did the Wicked and Divine,

which is also very, very, very, very good. Yes,

I think I have Wicked and Divine Volume 1. I

don't think I've read it yet, but I think I have

it. Right. But on the flip side, there's 10 number

11. Similarly, I will respect older concepts

and acknowledge their influence on present concepts.

I reserve the right to dislike them, but will

express that dislike in a reasonable and engaging

way. Yes. There's not a lot of reasonable and

engaging ways these days, sadly. Yeah, that's

the thing. I once got into a conversation with

somebody about Zack Snyder. okay now the the

fandom you know the mass fandom opinion is that

he's a terrible director and my opinion is is

that he is a very good director who never got

the chance to properly mature because he got

sucked into the corporate mindset far too early

Because you go back to Dawn of the Dead and Dawn

of the Dead is Zack Snyder without all the slow

motion and the Desaturated color and all that

stuff That he's come to depend on and it it's

lively. It's fun It features one of the best

openings of any movie ever made And I will I

will die in that hill So we had this conversation.

He was giving me the usual fandom line. He's

terrible. He ruins things. But at the end of

this conversation, he said, you know what? I

never looked at it from that perspective. That's

pretty cool. Differing opinions is what makes

the world great. Failure. Another thing in this

society, failure. Failure is a bad thing. No,

failure is how you gain success. Because you

learn. It goes, and this is going to be a completely

separate written thing that I do. This whole

thing of everybody, and this actually hurts me

mentally because I had issues with it as a kid.

Because of my cerebral palsy affecting the right

side of my body from my brain to my foot, I'm

not exactly the most adept guy at sports. I was

a skinny kid, I'm a fat old guy now, but I was

a fairly skinny kid, I could still hold a bat,

I could swing at a ball, but I wasn't the best

at sports. You're not gonna find me at the top

of the world in gym class kind of thing. So I

got a lot of participation, ribbons and medals

and things. At least you try. No! There's winning

and there's losing. You either are good enough

to win. No, I'm gonna try harder. Exactly. And

eventually you win. Exactly. And I know you're,

and I don't want to, this is another road just

like Nickelback that I don't want to go down.

I know you're not a Patriots fan and I understand.

but here's here's please to be to understand

that because of who i am a fan of uh -huh it's

in my dna to hate you i understand and i i understand

and i respect that here's my i also acknowledge

that that the team i i i root for sucks donkey

dong you might as well tell everybody who the

team is now know who the team is Okay, so my

thing with everybody being against the Patriots

no matter what is I'm sorry Okay in the last

two thousand one two thousand almost ten years

Mm -hmm from 2001 to now right there was a there

was a ten year span within From 2004 to 2014

they did not win the Super Bowl right? so They

still tried they came back and tried every single

year The reason why they are the winningest team

in in the NFL right now is because there are

winners and there are losers There are no participation.

You're either good enough to beat the Patriots

or you're not. Yes. I understand everyone said

like the year before they decided to cuddle cut

Rex Ryan at the knees and Hobble him and make

him into a paper tiger Right the year that we

beat you Mm -hmm. I went to the to the Super

Bowl Mm -hmm. There was a real sense of a I felt

the real sense of exhilaration and accomplishment

because we did something We did something to

be the old Rick Flair to be the man. You got

to beat the man. Yeah, and If it was all like

everybody's a winner in the NFL I wouldn't have

gotten that feeling. It's just crazy. I mentioned

earlier about a blog post about something else

that I don't even remember what I mentioned and

I'll have to go back and do it again. Also, we

should point out that there was a very long period

in the NFL's history when the Patriots were punchline.

Oh, I grew up in that period. Hello? Like 84

to 99 or something or other? My whole young teenage

and almost soon -to -be adulthood, the Patriots

were a joke. The Red Sox were the team to beat

up until 86 and Bill Buckner and whatever made

the man rest in peace. I'm a Red Sox fan, as

you know. Yes. So I love the Red Sox. 2004 was

like mainlining heroin. 2004 was a year that

will live on in infamy. 2004 was breaking of

the curse and all this and all that. I was into

role -playing games at the time. I recently got

back into it. And I actually created a character

for a superhero campaign called the Green Monster,

who was a young boy who basically was visited

by the ghost of Babe Ruth after the win and said,

it's time to use this energy for good. Yeah.

See, that's the thing. I don't think that the

rivalry will ever die. Oh, what? This is what

I tell people, because of course I'm living behind

the pinstripe curtain here. And sometimes I get

people who'll talk smack. And after I point out

that so far this millennium, we've outstripped

you. I also say what makes baseball the great

game it is, is rivalries. And I want the Yankees.

to be strong, because then when I beat you, it

means something. Exactly. Right. And we come

back to, of course, that that year, far too long

in the past, where we beat you for the for the

AFC championship. Yeah. We we felt like we accomplished

something because you were great. You know, I

would not I don't want you to be a stumble button

team that I can beat every time Yeah, I may hate

you with every fire But I want you to be competent

because I want to feel like something was you

accomplished Yeah, plus you need competition

drives competition like, you know That's just

the way it is. Right? It's you know We work hard

all year baseball and football That's right.

We work hard all year and we we we get to this

and we win and whatever next year Maybe we have

issues with injuries or whatever But we're still

trying to work our hardest or best or maybe your

team is working their hardest and their best

and they make it blah blah blah I think the only

team The only team in any sport but really at

least the two that we're talking about right

that I don't think is really Gotten a good break

honestly is sadly Miami the Miami Dolphins This

blog post Must be more hurtful for them because

they've got this massive thing that has not been

done by any other team to live up to Yeah, I

mean every time I hear of the Miami Dolphins

I think are they even Gonna do any like are they

gonna work their asses off to at least get to

the playoffs? No, why are they gonna be in the

Super Bowl? I don't even without actually looking

it up folks. I don't remember What was it 84?

I don't even I don't I don't know I don't even

remember the last time the Dolphins were in a

Super Bowl and the sad thing is the only thing

The playoffs in the last 20 years twice Wow,

I think I think there was the year that they

actually beat you guys out for the for the wild

card Yep, and there was another year a couple

of years before that But other than that, although

I would point more to it as far as a team that

just does not try Let's talk some lions folks,

let's talk some lot or the Jaguars for a while

Yeah, I mean nowadays they seem to be it's like

hey we can actually do this But for a long time

they were pitiful Yeah, if I if I saw the the

Jaguars on my team's schedule that year, I'm

like, oh, that's a free win You know, so the

last oh wow The the Dolphins have only had two

Super Bowl championship right one 1972 and 1973

right Now now granted to be fair. One of those

is among the most famous Super Bowl wins of all

time And I've got a similar problem of course

my team because my team Probably won arguably

the greatest Super Bowl of all time The super

which was the Super Bowl that pretty much assured

the merger of the AFL and the NFL Okay The famous

promise You know, and unfortunately we've been

living in the shadow of Joe name it holding up

the finger And there are some great things I

mean my favorite player of all who happened to

start out on your team Who was a jet was Curtis

Martin? Yeah, Curtis Martin remember is an incredible

player but you wouldn't know about it because

He was on our team Yeah, sadly yeah, I love Curtis

Martin and yeah I'm glad you finally made it

to the to the Hall of Fame. Yeah, that's that's

good But now see that's the thing kind of going

back just briefly here with Let's go ahead like

10 20 years Okay, because eventually the sweatshirt

and the crying quarterback will know about be

there It is a fact of life Stop there. So imagine

being the team that has to live up to that legacy

Stop it. Get out of my head, man. I was thinking

about this the other day, because I've been getting

into arguments over this whole Patriots. And

our two over there are like, how do you like

it now? Yeah, it's like, oh, shit. What is going

to happen when Brady and Belichick are not there?

Because look, I want to be completely honest,

and I say this every single time. I personally

believe the Patriots' success since 2001, the

successes that they have had, is not just because

of Brady and Belichick, it is because of every

single player that goes out on that field and

breaks their back for that team and for the fans.

Okay, I'm going to say, even though, like I said,

I hate you guys, every fiber of my being, I'm

going to say a couple of decent things about

them. One... Okay. The sweatshirt does seem to

have an eye for talent that is underutilized.

He does seem to be able to pick players from

other teams that aren't being appreciated and

get them motivated to do 100%. Personally, if

I had a time machine, one of the first things

I would do is travel back to that one three days

when he was, Bill Belichick was our coach. Three

days. I want to know what the fuck they said

to him that pissed him off so much that he literally

got on a plane in the middle of the night and

moved out of New York. What did he do? What did

he do? You know, it's like, okay, Woody Johnson

is an idiot. I know that. You know, we have to

if we want us to make make the Jets into a good

team. We have to cut the head off So somebody

who actually cares and isn't You know sparkle

-eyed over the latest trend Yeah But Yeah, I

want to know what happened those three days because

somebody must have said something to him you

know that made him say oh fuck this shit fuck

this but so you mentioned earlier we we didn't

um we didn't do this right uh... right yes uh...

i know exactly but it you brought up a point

about at least a one or at least a finally one

thing that kind of goes back to number seven

i will have standards i need no more at least

it got made i will make an exception to that

with the sports plate somebody like say what

you will about the whole steroids thing whatever

somebody like roger clemens or somebody like

uh... Who hadn't won? Oh, listen, didn't Curtis,

Kurt, what's his name? Schilling. Yes, yes, yes,

Schilling. Wasn't there some rumors about him

as well? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But my point is you

take a player that hasn't won or whatever or

hadn't won, like say, insert picture or whatever

player name here, won, the last time they won

was 45 years ago. Right. And they finally win

again. Mm -hmm like this year or next year or

whatever In that case of you know, I will have

standards at no more ice They got made the exception

to that for me is like the sports people at least

they finally got a win Because the thing is that

reputation they had erased Yep, that's the in

2004 This reputation we had of being losers and

also rants and, you know, we're, you know, the

jankies are our pappy. All gone. You know? Yep.

All gone. And that's, that's great. But what's

it, but the, I have a story about the, at least

it got made comment. Okay. Um, I am a big fan

of the spirit, the Will Eisner character. Okay.

I got excited when it was announced that Frank

Miller was going to direct a spirit feature because

he was very close friends of Will Eisner in his

Twilight years. So I thought, erroneously, that

Frank Miller was going to do right by his spiritual

father. I went to the Union Square AMC to see

the spirit. The day it came out, And it was poo.

It wasn't what you wanted it to be. It wasn't

what it was supposed to be. So much poo. And

I'm on the escalator, and behind me is a gentleman

who is talking to his friend and goes, well,

at least it got made. And I turned around and

I said, you're what's wrong right now. We have

to have standards. We have to have we can't I

mean we don't don't be a gatekeeper and don't

be but If somebody shits out a terrible product

don't exalt it Yeah Also, don't like stamp out

people who say they liked it Yeah, the thing

is don't continue to come back to the patronizing

thing. Don't continue to patronize something

that is substandard because it's a property you

love. Yeah. Again, going to something that I

grew up on in video games, the Need for Speed

video game franchise, say what you will about

the plot of the movie, and say what you will

about video game movies in general. Right. However,

seeing those cars and seeing those locations

and backgrounds in film was like, I don't know,

14, 15 year old me screaming at the top of my

lungs saying, yes, they made a movie out of the

game that I love and I don't, I liked the story

that was in the Need for Speed film, whatever.

It had great, I mean, it had Aaron Paul leading

it. It had other great support. It had, it has

frigging Rami Malek naked. How can you not like

that? How can you not like Mr. Ag... Elliot for

Mr. Ro - Anyway, point is, that movie, I will

defend that movie because even though the plot

was very generic, the plot of the games most

of the time is very generic. You're trying to

win a race. You're not, like, made for speed.

The only problem with video game movies is that

you're taking one medium, which was influenced

by a second medium, but has mutated into something

else. And trying to force it back into the bottom

of the original medium. And there are ways to

do it. I will defend the first Mortal Kombat.

Love that movie. There are films that, even though

they're not based on video game franchises, are

perfect video game films. Take It is a video

game film. Yep, okay. Um, the crank movies are

supposed to be taken has video game movies Yeah

a favorite film of mine from two years ago Joe

Lynch's mayhem the the film that cemented my

How shall I put it? Bordering on obsessive admiration

for Samara weaving is 100 % a video game movie.

You look at James Bond franchise, all of those

movies could be video games, a lot of them have

been video games, the best one I feel that they

did. as far as story wise goes as a couple years

ago they did golden eye rogue agent where it

was you know you're the you're you're the opposite

side of uh... you're not necessarily i don't

remember if it was a villain or whatever i have

to look it up point is golden eye rogue agent

was another different concept where you weren't

just playing bond you were playing a different

character going after different things but it

was within the james bond universe you know,

very, you know, concepts evolve. Creators evolve.

Which brings us to, you know, number 15, I will

accept that there are other interpretations of

the same concept. I was thinking of the horror

that the, that there was a new version of Thundercats,

which was more chibi. That never has seen the

day at light of day yet, that's just been a teaser.

But they were showing teasers and stuff, and

everybody was up in arms about that. But the

thing is, yeah, that is not your Thundercats.

But your Thundercats still exist. This is just

another interpretation. You know, the people

who yelled about Brave in the Bowl. Brave in

the Bowl was a wonderful series. Dietrich Bader

was a wonderful choice for Batman. Oh boy, here

we go. Don't get me wrong. I love, uh, the, the

Paul Vaney guy. Uh, George, uh, that, that, that's

the Superman. Kevin Conroy. Kevin Conroy. Kevin

Conroy, amazing, amazing voice actor. Uh, he's

kind of the, the voice when I'm like re, if I'm

reading a, a story or a comic with Batman in

it and I... He's the voice you hear. He's the

voice I hear, okay? Yep. But, but Dietrich Bader

was great. Yeah, in that setting he was my Different

interpretation you have Kevin Conroy side -by

-side with Dietrich Bader In one episode Batman

of Xernar. Yep So my favorite thing about brave

in the bold is the fact that they have Motherfucking

Peewee Herman as batmite Paul Rubin's as but

like I just rewatched the best of batmite thing

right just a YouTube video on on on just Putting

all his his appearances together. I'm like, that's

just hilarious. I absolutely love that My thing

with Dietrich Bader is not necessarily that he

was a bad Batman My problem with him is that

whole like typecasting thing. Well, the one thing

the one thing I remember him from before that

was he was Oswald in the Drew Carey show and

Oswald was not a very He was the searcher that's

true. Yeah, and But that is kind of the pro like

to go back to the for a second to the day that

the day that don't have the dead remake Ty Burrell

is in it I watched it again recently because

we're reviewing it this week on Dread Media.

And when Ty Burrell shows up, all I'm thinking

is, wow, Phil Dumpy's in this movie. And that

got me thinking about, you know what I would

really love? Al Bundy versus the zombie apocalypse.

I think Al Bundy would win. He's that stubborn.

You just imagine him with a chainsaw in one hand

and a shotgun in the other and you just go, let's

rock. I love that series because it was just

so shamelessly. It was just a response to all

the nice family sitcoms. It was like, sometimes

families hate each other. Yep, they do, but sometimes.

But yes, but I just kept. Even though this was

a different character and all I could see was

Phil Dumpy, which was weird Because I can see

O 'Neil and other things and not say hey look

it's Al Bundy I mean, that's like the meme that

keeps popping up on Facebook Yeah Ed O 'Neil

has been reading the same newspaper for 20 years

because they did actually use the same newspaper

in Modern Family that they had in Married with

Children You've heard Derek Ferguson's theory

about Jay Pritchett, right? I think so, but refresh

my memory. Jake Pritchett is actually Al Bundy.

Oh, yeah. Who eventually basically faked his

own death. Yep. Yeah, I do remember that. Married

a woman that he really wanted to be with. And

so they're basically the same character. But

anyway, what else do we want to talk about on

this list? The social media. Go ahead. The social

media thing. Look here. Here's the thing if I

have a Simple quote like a simple question that

I want to ask because I'm doing I like I want

I would I have access if I want to the creator

of whatever it is right if I have a quite like

Perfect example is Karen Gillian right when we

did our Star Wars episode of his of the first

two volumes of his run I wanted to make sure

I pronounced the guy's name right. So I asked

him on Twitter. And he responded to me. I asked,

and this is going to go back to you, Michael

Bailey, in law and order, I have been watching

reruns of Criminal Intent. Right. The Dinofrio

ones or the other ones? The Dinofrio ones. I

know that he was replaced at some point towards

the end. Well, it's the whole series what they

did Basically what they did was by season five

they They switched it they they volleyed episodes

so one episode would be Annabelle Iscara and

Chris Noth and then one episode would be Gordon

and Eames Okay, and they flip -flop flip anyway,

so I asked him like if there was this if there

was this like absolutely loving rewatching criminal

intent, love your character. Is there a story

that you always wanted to tell with that character?

I was floored that he actually replied. I figured

he's too busy. I figured, you know, most of these

people that we love, they're creators or they've

got very busy lives. So I was not expecting a

response at all. And he gave me a response of,

you know, he would like to do whatever it was

that he wanted to do. And I just. I messaged

him back and I said, oh, thank you for telling

me that. That sounds very cool. It freaks me.

It's funny. It's like because during the 90s,

I was a journalist and I interviewed a lot of

people. I interviewed one of my idols, Warren

Zevon. I interviewed, you know, and I was always

professional and I actually got a reputation

in the hip hop community as somebody who would

not pretend, you know, would not front. But would

come prepared So I actually got a lot of like

interviews with rap artists who were like I heard

about you from someone so he's you know but for

some reason when Brian Trenchard Smith answered

my tweet I Squitched out like a teenager. I am

still kind of Weirded out by the fact that this

is a man who now checks in with me every once

in a while he's kind of my friend you know that's

that's kind of weird and it's like we just uh

i just reached out to another famous director

for the honeywell experiment i don't want to

say who it is because um i don't like saying

it until it's actually set in stone He was to

say though, to give you a hint, if you like movies

about cats living inside other cats, this episode's

gonna be for you. And the fact that he got back

to me, it's like I act like a little fan boy.

And it just amazes me because there's immediacy

to social media. And as opposed to like in the

old days, like way back when I wrote a story

for The Ultimate Hulk. About the defenders and

I wanted to dedicate it to Steve Gerber So I

tracked him down and wrote him a letter and he

wrote me back and we had a short conversation

But the thing is it took time, you know, I sent

it out and then the next day I got a reply from

him whereas now it's like you can sometimes get

an instant response from somebody and I think

that Gives us a feeling of familiarity Which

do you have? Yeah And that will also leads to

because I've always had the theory that if you

communicate through a computer You have like

a mask so to speak on you So you can feel you

feel like you can do say things that you wouldn't

say if let's say Ryan will That's his name right

Ryan will Phillips or Ryan Williams Which which

yet I got Ryan Johnson. I'm sure that some of

the people who wrote those terrible things to

Rose Tran or Ryan Johnson were actually face

-to -face. They wouldn't say them. They wouldn't

say them. And the thing is, what disgusted me

the most about the Rose Tran thing is that they

treated it as a badge of honor. That's not a

good thing you did, people. Yeah, no, that's

not a good thing Modern technology has given

us a chance to be closer to the people who make

the stuff we like Ever before yeah, but you've

got to use it respectfully Yeah, you really do

I mean, okay admittedly I've told you I fucking

rock to his face. I think he's an idiot, but

that's At least you're respecting me for it,

you know? Yeah. And see, that's the thing with

me is I try to seek out things that I, like,

if I read the, you know, the premise of, let's

say, the phonograph, the phonogram thing, if

I read this and it intrigues me, I'm gonna check

it out. Right. If I like it, Like my point in

saying this is I actively seek out the things

I know I'm going to like and basically just you

know and like like I'm not out to I'm not on

social media. I'm not doing a comic review podcast.

I'm not out to review something that I May completely

shit right because that's a lot of energy That's

like being negative is a hell of a lot more taxing

than but it's also more entertaining It is true,

but when you don't, as you know, when you don't

get paid for that entertainment, it's taxing.

It is, it is. No, and the thing is, I've always

tried when I am writing a negative review of

something or talking about something negatively

to justify why I, to explain why I dislike it.

I think a lot, and I think this is something

I highly recommend these two gentlemen. They're

two great film critics, and they have a series

of podcasts that are very entertaining. William

Bibiani and Whitney Seibel. And they have this

theory that nowadays film criticism is being

kind of devalued because people find it easier

to get clicks when they're saying it sucks. picking

apart picking apart minutiae instead of saying

well this script was wrong there was no character

arc or you know justifying it yeah so so yeah

no so i always try to give solid concrete reasons

yeah and i'm glad you do and i'm glad that a

lot of people that i know do that sadly when

i look at my like my google feed on my phone

when it's like um you know Like From I own from

io9 or gizmo or whatever they're called now.

This is Batman day I have to admit my favorite

Batman isn't Bruce Wayne right well before I

even click on that right I I know exactly what

they're going to be doing because I see the pic.

They're using a picture of Terry McGinnis Batman

Beyond. So just by that headline, I know at some

point, Terry is going to be this person's favorite

Batman, but that's fine. But again, you're basically,

you know, try your preference by tearing down

other people's. Yeah. And that's not the way

like that that headline should read this is batman

day i have to admit my favorite batman is terry

mcginnis not isn't bruce what like a lot of cringe

-worthy thing yeah just like my favorite james

bond is uh... timothy dalton my favorite doctor

who is colin baker i don't denigrate the other

ones But, you know, it's a matter of preference,

you know? It's always that preference. It's not

alright to use that preference as a club to bludgeon

somebody else. Exactly. Like, for me, as a kid,

I saw a lot of the Roger Moore James Bond films.

I saw several of the Sean Connery ones. I saw

one of the two Timothy Dalton ones, License to

Kill. Which is the lesser of the two films, yeah.

Yeah, but for me It will forever be the Irish

guy it will forever be Pierce Brosnan because

that was the movie Goldeneye was the movie first

I would say probably it's funny the same director

Martin Campbell directed GoldenEye and Casino

Royale, which you're probably two of maybe the

five best James Bond films ever made Yep I, Goldeneye

was the one, the first one I ever saw in theaters.

Because of my age and whatever else, I was 15

when Goldeneye came out. So, Goldeneye was the

movie, that franchise was, like that version

of the franchise, those four films. And you gotta

understand also, those four films also mark the

end of an era for the franchise because the world

is not enough is Desmond Llewellyn's last film

because he passed away and I'm like oh my god

oh yes so um let's see nostalgia porn yeah I

will respect when things seem to have a finite

end and resist nostalgia porn right around to

what we started with which is Some? I wonder

what Star Wars would have been like if we only

had three films. Yeah. I wonder what would have

happened if, let's say, Iron Man didn't do well

and we never got the Avengers. Right. Some things

I think I think that there are certain Musicians

I'm very into music, but I think there are certain

musicians that died early that their reputation

is probably better because they died early Yeah,

you know it's Sometimes something and also we

come back to like I think right now If Warner

Brothers was smart, they would stop making Batman

films for about five years Because how are you

gonna miss something if it doesn't go away? Yeah,

if you have two Batman films Batman related,

you know, we're getting like the Joker and then

early on next year we're getting Harley Quinn

was Harley Quinn in the Birds of Prey, which

is kind of funny because the Birds of Prey are

now supporting characters in their own film Yeah,

that's like I'm like, oh Mary Elizabeth Winstead

in spandex. I'm there He's lovely but the thing

is it's like They're forcing Batman content and

I'm like sitting there going like You kind of

give it up. I think the reason why we were so

taken with the Nolan films Was because we hadn't

had a Batman film in almost ten years So we were

ready for it And we were ready for a new take

Whereas now where they're like, okay, we're gonna

try Ben Affleck is an older Batman. Oh, that's

not working So we're gonna go with Robin Pattinson

who is a good actor people don't start mocking

him because he was in such a shitty series You

know keep going and like changing it Doesn't

work, you know, it's like we're gonna get a new

spider -man probably in two years. Oh It's like

look we just got used to the to Tom Holland We

like Tom Holland. I had no problem, even though

they are substandard films, I had no problem

with Andrew Garfield. I always said if you took

Andrew Garfield to Emma Stone and put him in

the Sam Raimi films, I would be in heaven. Back

to you know, but the thing is is like, okay Ghostbusters

we talked briefly about Ghostbusters Ghostbusters

they did a film that is very very very good and

some people would consider a classic But regardless

is incredibly good a second film which is not

as good but still pretty solid Yeah, ah and then

Nothing until 2016. Yeah, a really surprisingly

excellent cartoon series. A couple, yeah. Yeah,

well, I've never seen Extreme Ghostbusters, but

the real Ghostbusters is a really good series,

period. Yeah, you know, back then as a kid, it

surprised me at the time. It doesn't now, but

the fact that Lorenzo music... Is the voice of

Peter Venkman and Garfield. They let this thing

lie fallow. They let this project lie fallow

for about a decade and a half, I think. Even

longer, maybe. And so they decide, let's do a

new take on Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters answer

the call, which is how it's now officially referred

to. Right. I'm gonna tell you right now, I thought

that was a pretty fun movie. I had a lot of fun

with it. But, it was something new. It wasn't

necessarily for the people who love the original

Ghostbusters. Don't you think it's nice that

little girls have characters they can look up

to? yes but anyway they were reviled and they

were hated so what do they do they go for nostalgia

porn and they're gonna make a sequel almost 30

years later yeah and I'm like no no okay so you

take Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters answer the

right both films have SNL comedians coming up

to do a movie. I will say something else. I think

that there is at least one character in Ghostbusters

Answer the Call that is good enough to hang with

the original crew. Which one? Holtzman. Kate

McKinnon? Kate McKinnon, yes. I love that character.

I have not loved her in anything else. It's like

everything else I've seen her in I'm like Not

so much guys But but yeah, I think I would fit

in well with Venkman and Spengler Yeah, I did

not Okay, so the male comedians for the male

movie in the eighties, the female comedians or

whatever you want to say, for the answer the

call thing. I am not a Melissa McCarthy fan.

I do not find any. I think she is that her comedy

is the current generation. Unfortunately, it's

far too much. Fat girl goes down, go boom. Too

many of her films. But when she's allowed to

actually play, like in Spy, have you ever seen

Spy? Not yet, no. Oh, I recommend it. It's overall,

it's far too long, but it's great. And Melissa

McCarthy is great in it. And my major man crush,

Jason Statham, is hilarious in it. Yeah, I remember

seeing the trailers for it, and I had wanted

to see it at the time. I just never got the...

That's the other thing about fandom. There is

not enough time in the day in our lifetimes to

fit everything in. It's kind of like pick and

choose your battles. Pick and choose your fandoms.

Don't try to be a fan of everything because then

you're going to end up being a fan of nothing.

Look at Superman in the movies. Okay. And in

TV. Okay, so we had the Chris referees version

excellent version Some of the the scripts were

kind of hanky Yeah, and then There was no there

was no supreme for a while then Superman shows

up on television first since Lois and Clark Which

is more of a sitcom slash romantic rom -com approach

To the property and then you get smallville Now

Smallville was the Superman for that generation

Yeah, so in the big in when they decide to bring

them back to the big screen Do they? Do something

similar to smallville because that's now what

people are familiar with when it comes to the

Superman Man, no matter how much I just liked

Smallville. No, they literally basically had

the equivalent of somebody going, well, let's

say in 1970 to use Mark Millar's simulath, and

I can't believe I'm using Mark Millar in a positive

light. He said, imagine what would happen in

1976 if the director of the Superman movie says,

I'm going to do it exactly like the George Reeves

version. Right and the thing is is that has generations

change storytelling? Methods change Sensibilities

change tastes change We can't say you know answer

the call was a Ghostbusters created for a different

Generation than the generation in 1984, that's

sort of the first movie. That does not make it

bad. And that does not mean, you know, we can't

wait. And something is new. And this also comes

down with something else I wrote about. Creators

change. You know, creators. You can't get as

much as... You know as much as you might not

like the the prequel trilogy You can't yell at

George Lucas for being different in 1990 than

he was in 1977 Because he has lived 20 almost

20 years of life. He has evolved he has his tastes

have changed his you know, um You know John Carpenter

Created Escape from New York, great film. Waited

over 10 years to do Escape from L .A. Right.

He's a different person, so it's a different

sensibility. Even though it's telling basically

the same story. It is basically John Carpenter

saying in a satirical way, God, L .A. sucks.

But the thing is it's a different sensibility

and we can't as much as I dislike that film I

cannot tear it down because it's not like the

first film because You're dealing with a person

who has had 20 years. He's been through two marriages

in between Mm -hmm, you know as father two kids

So he so of course he's is his orientation towards

the property will be different. You know, don't,

don't, you know, the crystal skull, yeah, it's,

it's not, being the Anna Jones we love, but the

thing, to quote Roger Ebert, it's like, you like

pizza, right? And that last slice of pizza may

not be as good as the first slice. Sure doesn't

mean that it's not that's that's not good It's

different it's it's the project it's the product

of some of two creators who have lived At that

time it was what 25 years of life Yeah Don't

go screaming because it's not exactly it's not

Exactly Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I'm not

gonna call it Indiana Jones the Raiders of the

Lost Ark come at me Yeah, it's Hell don't that

French. I don't like Temple of Doom But Temple

of Doom is the product of these creators several

years in the in the future Yeah, and they wanted

to do because the whole idea of Indiana Jones

was they wanted to do something pulp Temple of

Doom is pulp Yeah, it is in keeping with the

early 30s, which is where it takes place, the

sensibilities of that particular form of entertainment

at that time. I think people were shocked because

it was a little much darker than Raiders of the

Lost Ark, but you can't denigrate it for being

something different because there are different

people working on it. Yeah, the those four films

and that franchise is Okay, you take Indiana

Jones you take James Bond those two franchises

are While it is they are both franchise They're

also both individual stories because Raiders

of the Lost Ark The Mad Max series, yeah the

Mad Max series and George Miller has said this,

is not supposed to have a continuity. He said,

these are different stories told about the same

character. Right. Not that this is not an ongoing

narrative. So don't give me crap about well,

maybe Tom Hardy is the wild child from Road Warrior

No, it's just a different person telling a different

story that they heard about a character that

has that a lot of stories have grown up around

It's like yeah Yeah, yeah those types of stories

are you know It's like how certain people in

certain areas of the U .S. will call Coke Coke,

meaning all soda is Coke. They'll call it soda

or they'll call it pop. It's all dependent upon

how you were raised and what you were raised

to say. Unfortunately, I'm a big fast food junkie

and one of my favorite places to go is Checkers.

And they have Mr. Pibbs, only it's not called

Mr. Pibbs anymore, it's called just Pibbs Extra.

But I still ask for Mr. Pibbs. Because that's

what I learned. I always said Mr. Pibbs is kind

of like Dr. Pepper's slightly less reputable

brother. Yeah, exactly. That's right, so to talk.

Hey, you know? Like for me, it's long again ever

do I make rings up there? Brins rings of potato

chips There was a potato chip brand that was

from Chicago that was sold here through Dollar

Tree I would have to ask my wife, I've only lived

here two years. If you guys ever want to get

on my good side, send me those, send me bags

of that particular, I'm trying to remember, it

wasn't Brins, Brins was something else. But there

is a particular brand of potato chip that's supposed

to be in your city that I got hooked on, and

then they cut off the supply. Do some research

just got so because it had like it was like a

thicker cut. It was like really cool. But anyway

Hey, we've covered everything in this almost

two and a half hour show Does the soda stuff

it for me it all comes down to as a kid it all

came down to advertising you had the man Ray

Charles With the diet Pepsi girls doing, you

know, you got the right one, baby And then Batman

89 comes along and you got Alfred advert Michael

Goff as Alfred ever, you know, what is a great

character? I'm a big fan of British character

actors and he is he is a He was a great one.

He was a great heavy in the 60s But that just

seeing that and again going back to Batman whatever

But just seeing Alfred outside of the film doing

a commercial for Diet Coke, right? No, this black

car you'll notice or whatever it is that says

in the end like oh my For me for some reason

when you started bringing that up much the thing

that popped into my head is the on star commercial

Yes, you know the on -star commercial using although

they use different actors and used Curtis Armstrong

is the Joker Mm -hmm But the thing they used

That was the beginning of our ascendance Yeah

You know wasn't the arts that we became the dominant

culture, but The beginning was in 89 when people

were going hey people like batman and it's so

strange to me when mainstream news media in the

in the beginning i don't know because i don't

watch it a lot now right i mean news programs

for me are who who got killed last night or what

traffic accident what's the major malfunction

in the in the white house oh wait uh you know

kind of thing like but back then like i specifically

remember like I think, yeah, John Tash and Mary

Hart on Entertainment Tonight trying to talk

about Batman. Actual journalists trying to talk

about a comic book character. And I'm like, please,

at nine years old, I'm like, please, no, stop,

don't. There's some sort of disconnect with the

mainstream news media and geek culture. They're

like, oh yeah, this Batman movie is coming out

and it's supposed to be really good. Like, I

know none of us are going to end up at NBC, ABC,

CBS, Fox, not Fox News. Oh, no, none of us end

up at Fox News. But like... See, now I'm obsessed

with trying to figure out... What the name what

the brand of that potato chip Because I've got

somebody who actually could get me some it's

it's like every time I talk to What's -his -face

on? All I think of is can you get me that the

Red Sox branded Ice cream that they have Was

it wasn't J's potato chips was it I don't know

if it was J's I'm looking for it because it it's

not zaps Is that okay? It's not yeah zaps is

New Orleans kettle coke. Yeah, but if you know

which one I'm talking about folks Let me know

because Yeah, I'm looking at the Dollar Tree

site and I'm like, yeah, but I they gave up on

them technical difficulties let's move on shall

we alright folks I think Tom and I are not really

talked out but we've been talking for a long

time on a multitude of topics you guys are probably

bored oh stop come on you listen to an old man

for three hours rambling I'll be 40 in February

so while I'm not right to your level you're not

yet there I'm almost there The first time I ever

felt truly old was when I was in a Dunkin' Donuts

and they gave me the senior discount. And that

was like five years ago. Oh my God. And I'm like,

is it come to this? It's like, now I can get

into, now I can go to any Regal movie theater

and get in using the senior discount because

their cutoff date is apparently 54. Wow. So we're

going to take a quick break. You're going to

hear Tom and a bunch of his other cohorts with

a couple of ads that he sent over. And we're

going to come back to close out the show and

tell you where you can hear all about Tom's stuff

and everything else after this. I'm Thomas DJ

network, you can also find with umbrella Charmin

bowler, which is a podcast Where I'm looking

at my favorite TV show of all time the Avengers

Which has nothing to do with the superheroes.

Yes one from the 60s and we're in season two

right now, we do one a month, me and Scott McGregor,

and that's available. Tom DJ's Watching is supposed

to be available through there, but I haven't

edited the second episode yet, and I've been

looking at the Doom Patrol series, one episode

at a time, from the eyes of somebody who loves

the Doom Patrol very, very much. And also, if

you want to be a Patreon, because I do have a

Patreon, which is Patreon .com slash DJ's Domicile

of Dread. There is a special podcast called Cinematic

Mirage, where I look at movie projects that never

came to the screen. So, Nicolas Cage is Superman.

Somebody's already done that. I know, I know.

For example, the first episode we looked at Tales

from the Crypt presents Dead Easy. Oh, that's,

yeah, wow. It was supposed to be the first Tales

from the Crypt film. Very cool. So, um, and I

promise I'll get to it very soon. It's just I

got, I got kind of waylaid by an opportunity

that did not pan out because I could not get

it done in the deadline. But I will be doing

one on The Hunt. the the film that apparently

You know Orange Julius Jesus doesn't want you

to see And That you can get only on the patreon

for at the $5 level more you have but we have

several levels from $1 to $10 and you get special

treats ranging from Exclusive essays to if you

get a level you get to assign me work I have

to I just did my first assignment. I did I reviewed

the butterfly effect for Damien Crawford The

Ashton Kutcher movie butcher Amy Steele, yeah

Aaron Henson guy who plays foggy Nelson in the

daredevil TV series. Yep that is a I've reviewed

it. It's available on the blog. It is a very

good film. And I'm just, it's just so many of

my buttons got pushed. I'm like, no, no, don't

set that dog on fire. I remember when Elden Henson

showed up as Foggy in the Marvel Daredevil series.

I'm like, where have I seen, oh my God, it's

Fulton Reed from The Mighty Ducks. I'm like,

holy crap, he looks so different. There is a

lot of ways to get stuff that I do. And all of

these ways will be in the post, folks, so you

can click on all of them. And the other thing

that you can get at the $1 level, at any level,

is I'm working on a brand new project called

Liberty. Which is an entirely new pulp superhero

universe And we're do I'm doing both a narrative

thing and I'm doing an oral history thing Okay,

so you get that before eventually being turned

into a book But right now you're gonna get all

the stuff as it comes out. So It's gonna and

maybe Ozzy Mendea's because it might be coming

back which is a project Which the high concept

is Nazis versus mummies Well the mummies can

wrap them up yeah Nazis versus mummies and Doing

this project that did not work out has given

me some insight into that project Which has been

on the back burner for a couple of months so

that might be coming back to very cool so yeah,

so there's a lot of stuff and You know I'm available.

I'm available on Twitter. I'm available on Facebook.

I'm very approachable So You can find me absolutely

nice guess be nice I also, unfortunately, post

far too many pictures of my cats. And I post

pictures of my cat back to you. Yes, you did.

I mean, right now, Tabitha the movie cat and

Raina are having a little bit of a time out because

they've been fighting. Oh, boy. So we had to

put them in separate beds, because usually they

would go into the same bed and cuddle. They'd

be cuddle buddies. But they've been fighting,

so we had to separate them. OK, how many cats

do you have? We officially have two cats Tabitha

the movie cat who spends most of her time watching

movies either with my mother or myself Lately

she's been watching a lot of Korean films with

me. Okay Because I'm trying to learn Korean.

Okay Oh, I've been watching and that might be

coming up as a podcast on the dread media patreon

feed. Oh cool Because I'm watching so much and

I want it talk about it so it's like hey des

could i could i do that on your feet and we so

um but um and then there's reyna reyna has been

with us since 2011 she's a grand dame she's a

russian blue okay and we bought we got her we

adopted her with a friend uh kalista cat or kali

as we used to call her or ninja cat Because we

would not see her for hours and then we would

just see a paw come out from underneath the couch

So she was ninja cat, but she ran away. Oh Now

there's also a third cat Clips are red who is

a feral cat but as this size adopted us Okay,

basically Is the official guardian of our front

porch he hangs out on the front porch and keeps

people away who are mean And we made a little

house for him, so when the weather gets bad,

he can go in there. And he's just a very good

watch cat. So we have three cats in our family,

but officially we only own two. Okay. So Tabitha

the movie cat, that's obvious. I mean, it's basically

Samantha from Bewitched Daughter. was already

named when we got okay but it's got something

with same thing with uh... raina well my bread

i'd named click show red because one at you've

seen the pictures he's a red cat uh... i wasn't

sure if it was going to be that on the nose but

i was gonna say where did click sure it's a little

comes from the fact that he's a feral cat okay

and in new york city The practice is to, uh,

neuter feral cats. The government practice is

to neuter feral cats. And to show people that

they are neutered, they clip the end of one ear.

So, when I first saw him, I started calling.

It was the first time I saw a cat who had been

treated that way. So I just started calling him

Clip Show. So these clips show red very cool.

So yes, we used to have a whole A whole kind

of pod of mutant kiddies who used to hang out

on our front porch We had one who had five things

with five toes. Oh Boy we had an extra toe and

we had one who had half a tail. Oh who we called

half tail And we had one we called Groucho because

he had a Groucho mustache under his nose. So,

but yeah. So we love cats here. Very cool, very

cool. So very cat friendly. We love the kitties.
