STUDIO 2009
Blank Check Review

About this Episode
Hi, this is Pat Fraley, purveyor of duck, dog,
and villain voices, and you're listening to the
Geekcast Radio Network. Hey, it's Mistress Carrie,
and you are listening to Studio 2009. There is
nothing wrong with your podcast player do not
attempt to adjust the volume Hello and welcome
back into studio 2009. You are listening to us
here only on the GeekCaster radio network I'm
of course here Mike. Joining me is Steve Megatron.
Hello, sir Hello, and yeah, so we're here one
last time in 2024 for the 3th anniversary stuff
You will hear Probably the next episode, you'll
actually probably hear this episode in 2025,
but we're recording this in 2024. This episode
is all about blank check from Disney from 1994.
The next episode, Dave Draper returns and we
talk about a movie from 2011, which was John
Boyega's debut film, Attack the Block. That was
something, but yeah. Let me ask you a question,
sir. Yes. Blank check for a million dollars.
What would you do with it? If I had a blank check
for a million dollars, yeah Hmm Well, I would
hope I would hope it was a legit check not a
blank yeah, but I'm saying like What would you
do with them? If you had a blank check and what
would you do with a million? Like it takes him
in this movie. It takes him like three different
He's like, oh, I'm just gonna make it up for
200. And then I'll just do it for this and I'll
just do it for that. And I'm just like, wow.
I would pay my house off. There you go. They'd
be expensive, yo. Yeah, they'd be expensive,
yo. And we'd be old by the time we finished that
30 year mortgage and have to refinance. It is
what it is. um but yeah no this is like i was
i re -watched this today and i'm like okay i
know it's 1994 standards but how this did not
teach kids of the 90s to try to do this is just
crazy to me crazy it was that long ago yeah that's
very true you know what's funny is this this
film has a crappy rating on the tomato meter
It's gonna 9 % rotten and then I don't know what
the heck a popcorn meter is but on their their
website unless that's the fan rating But it's
gonna 35 % I'm like, okay, this movie is absolutely
hilarious Hey at least red one got a 31 % rotten
That's rotten tomatoes though the the people
put 90 % so this is how I gauge a film If the
audience score is high and the critics score
is low, it's a winner. If it's the other way
around, I'm not going to enjoy it. But yeah,
this is kind of both on par at the bottom. But
I feel like this is one of those ones that unless
you grew up with it, you're not going to enjoy
it. Yeah, probably. I feel like this is one of
those ones where, like I said at the beginning,
what would you do with a million dollars? Like
you said you'd pay off your house and I'm sure
you'd have plenty of money left over to whatever
with the rest of it and same thing with me is
like I would take care of everything I needed
to take care of I would make sure I was set up
for you know as long as I could be set up for
a million bucks and the interesting thing is
I actually did the well Google did the math,
but I did the math on this and 1994 to next year
2025. $1 million in 1984 is equivalent in purchasing
power to about $2 ,128 ,832 .66 today. So it
had an increase of 112 .88 % over 30 years. Hey,
increase is increase, right, folks? Yep. but
uh because i'm i'm always curious like when they
when they give out certain amounts of money like
hell $200 was a big deal 30 years ago to a lot
of people especially to a kid he's 11 years this
kid is 11 years old and he just wants to he wants
to have money He's not old enough to have a job
to make the money kind of thing, but like At
11 or your parents having you mow the lawn and
giving you 10 bucks 20 bucks, whatever Probably
not. Oh, they were okay. Good. Yep All right.
We'll see, you know You could get this little
boy James. I used to make 10 bucks for mowing
my lawn Hmm. Very cool. Very cool I was trying
to figure out where I know some of these people
from, some of the actors. Michael Lerner, who
plays Biederman. Unfortunately, he passed away
this year. He was 81. Last year, he was 81. Died
of complications from brain seizures at a hospital
in Burbank. That's... But I was looking at the
character of Biederman and I kept seeing Wayne
Knight. I kept seeing Newman. It was his voice
and the way he looked and stuff and I'm looking
through his tomography and I'm like They do they
do have a striking resemblance in their yeah
Yeah, my first thought the whole time watching
this was holy crap Kramer and Newman before Kramer
and Newman He was in one of your favorite movies.
He was mr. Greenway and elf From 2003. That's
not one of my favorite movies. It's not? I thought
it was. No. Really? I don't mind. I don't mind
it. It's not one of my favorites, though. It's
not. Elf is not one of those ones I care to go
back and watch. There's a lot of people that
like that movie. I guess I get you. My boss likes
that movie. He actually dresses like him for
Halloween sometimes or Christmas, I mean. She's
Yeah, and I'm just kind of looking through Biederman's
TV credits to see where else I think I had No,
nothing He's in plenty of shows are recognized.
He was in the a team an episode for that. He
was in various things But like nothing is jumping
out at me. So that Blank check Preston waters
11 years old wants money doesn't have a job has
a very Overly strict father and a mother that
I don't know like she's not really she's there
and she presents a united front with the father
but she's not really she's not taking him aside
to say here's this or here's that behind the
father's back something like that but it seems
like it's the father and the three sons because
he's got two older brothers who are doing this
hand -and -foot business what the hell did his
older brothers just know He was in Star Trek.
Yes, he was. Yes, Brian Banzal. He was Worf's
son. Yes. Yes, Brian Banzal. Alexander Ryzenko.
Yep. Yes, he was. He was in seven episodes, so
we will get to that at some point. Yeah, Brian
Banzal as an actor and musician, he kinda got
into some trouble. 2007 2009 2010 with violence
and Assaulting his partner and things like that
and everything else which I I Don't really mind
the terminology, but I find it interesting that
Wikipedia whoever wrote this Wikipedia article
for the for his his Articular Under legal issues,
it says that he was arrested on charges of assaulting
his partner. He was sentenced to two years of
probation on August 31st, 2007. Very next statement,
which has citations on December 7th of 2009.
He was arrested for third degree assault and
failure to appear in connection with the 2007
assault on his girlfriend. I don't really, the
whole girlfriend partner thing doesn't matter
to me, but like, why doesn't it just say. The
same thing since it was the same person who's
what it is. Well, yeah, he had some legal issues
and Yeah, I don't know He's from 98 to now he's
a musician which I've only ever seen him in this
thing Like I know he's been in next -gen and
I know he's been in some other he was in an episode
of Super Mario Brothers Super Show He's in Koopa
Claws Don't remember him in that. This is the
only thing I remember him. He was in Parker Lewis
can't lose for an episode. Don't remember that
I have no idea what that is Parker Lewis can't
lose was anything that he was in pre Star Trek
The next generation in Super Mario Brothers Super
show. I have no idea what he was in. Yeah Well,
yeah, that's yeah, and then blank check and my
check Yeah And then we've got what else we got
here for this Like I mentioned Jen though the
father James played by James Redborne. I Recognized
him. He was in one of my favorite TV shows. He
was in white collar as the main FBI head person
Reese Hughes So I recognized him as the father
and he had been in a bunch of other stuff as
well New York undercover and he was in an episode
of Seinfeld he was in I'm trying to see if there's
a A Star Trek connection for you anywhere here.
There doesn't seem to be Not even in movies.
He was in real steel as Marvin if you saw real
steel in 2011 But he just has one of those faces
one of those voices that I absolutely remember
off the top of my head, but um, but yeah, no
absolutely. But this movie, it's very simple,
straightforward, kid wants money, kid wants money
for stuff, kid wants whatever. I don't think
he's not willing to do the work for it. He just
doesn't have the opportunity to do the work for
it, and then he just kinda ends up on easy street
by forging this blank check. Kind of thing I
Love how like easy they make it seem in the computers
for like this crap Yeah, and then the fact that
like oh it's easy to talk with a robo voice and
then it's easy to you know It's like why didn't
you think to use a font to make it look like
somebody wrote it instead of typed? Yeah Like
that's the first thing I noticed when I see it,
but it's like I also like I've thought about
that when i watched him like why didn't you just
write it in some kind of cursive font yeah like
nobody would have caught it like no i mean the
only way they were going to catch it is the way
they actually caught it which was the whole meat
juice and yeah sure i'm juice what he actually
says is No thanks, I'm not thirsty, because he
doesn't realize what Biederman is saying to him.
He's asking him, are you juice? Not, do you want
juice, kind of thing. But, uh, yeah, no, the,
the, the, the actual act of writing out and doing,
not even writing out, printing out the blank
check, or even having the, like, I don't, remember
I guess I don't remember computers from 30 years
ago because I don't remember like well could
scanners not scanners could printers do that
you put in a piece of paper like a blank check
and it would print on it automatically yeah well
you can print on it you just have to line it
up in the right spot on the document right okay
gotcha if you don't it'll print in the weirdest
place and then you'll be screwed Be screwed,
yeah. Huh, interesting. But yeah, folks, don't
print out blank checks, please. We don't endorse
criminality here at the Geekcast Radio Network,
as much as we would love to have a million bucks.
And you have to find a stall to put them all
in. A million bucks, get it? A million bucks.
Nobody's laughing. Alright, shut up, Mike. Suspension
of disbelief on most of this stuff, I would say
this movie overall is fairly decent. It's another
one of those one -and -done films. Does not need
more to it. Does not need less to it either,
so there's that. I'm glad that this is one of
those one -off films, because Disney tends to
overdo it with remakes or sequels. And this one
does not need either no luckily this never got
a remake or a sequel or anything It just exists
in the scope of 30 years ago Now it's funny because
a lot of the reviews and stuff are like looking
back on it. Uh -huh. It's kind of messed up Yeah,
it's very messed up Because they're like in a
lot of ways, but then people are like, oh, it's
a grown woman kissing an 11 year old boy Yeah,
yeah, yeah that was a little They yeah, they
do this whole thing and she even says oh, you
know call me in ten years and she's probably
what? late 20s early 30s and he's 11 so Yeah
Yeah, a little cringy a little cringy Yeah by
a bit Because if that were a male and um, you
know, yeah a male FBI agent and you're all like
that would have gone over like Yeah, really badly.
So you just got missed Yeah, like in the at the
time like yeah that parts messed up, but like
I didn't mind the rest of the film Yeah, no,
absolutely. I like the limo driver. I like all
of his interactions with that though Yep, that
yeah good old Henry Henry's awesome. Yep. Henry
is awesome that dude. I wonder what I can't even
print it Rick You come in I not even sure I passed
away in 2015 Let's see, he was in Loaded Wo -
Oh! He's in a lot of stuff. He was one of the
prison guards in Spaceballs. He was Walt, aka
also the city worker in Die Hard. So there's
that. Now I gotta really re -watch Die Hard just
to find him in it, not because it's not a Christmas
movie. He was in The Last Boy Scout. Like I mentioned,
he was in Loaded Weapon 1. He was in Groundhog
Day. He was Gus in Groundhog Day. Last Action
Hero. He was in... I'm trying to think. He was
in the first scary movie. He was in Harvard Man
in 2001. And then he played Father Rick in Funky
Monkey in 2004, which was his final role. He's
probably sure he's dead. He doesn't like Mike.
So, you know, mostly pretty much all movie stuff
for him. Very cool. Yep. Oh yeah, blank check.
It's... It was fun going back and re -watching
this, because I remember watching it at the time
when I was 14, and at that time I had a crush
on one of the older girls in the neighborhood,
so I kind of saw the similarities between me
and Preston a little bit. Even though I wasn't
as, uh, computer - I was computer savvy, but,
you know, for... Non -Mac computers. No Macintosh.
Nope. I'm not a fan of them at all. Damn rotten
fruit. So yeah, that's uh, that's blank check.
I'm probably gonna give the movie a three and
a half out of five. Yeah, I mean I'll probably
give it about the same just because I did enjoy
it but it's again it's another one of those ones
that you know between that one moment at the
end and then like Some of it like I don't it
doesn't have a lot of rewatchability Yeah, no,
this is like one like literally. I think I've
seen this once in the last 30 years before this
viewing I I Think I saw it about four years ago
Yeah, whenever Disney Plus was 2019 -2020 whenever
Disney Plus Started being a thing is when I watched
it so I'd say four or five years ago, but Before
that I hadn't rewatched this in a long time All
right folks. We're gonna go to a quick ad break
here and here's some ads and some other stuff
We'll come back to close the show right after
this It was the perfect crime Everything was
going according to plan. I want new bills. We're
back in the SNL business, Biederman. I'll send
my guy in tomorrow with a check for a million.
Yep, tomorrow, just like the old days. But one
little thing is about to come between him and
his money. Preston Waters. What about my bike?
What do you want, kid? What do you think? Come
on, let's make a deal. Give that check to your
dad. He didn't know what to do with it. It's
a blank check. Cash in the big one today? Sort
of. I worked hard to steal that money, Beerman!
You gave it to some sick -faced little kid. Now,
America's smallest millionaire Nice to meet you.
Hop in. I didn't actually mean hop in. is about
to become a big -time spender. I'm gonna go buy
some stuff. He's getting everything he ever wanted.
And doing everything he ever dreamed. Help me
find him. You understand? Not too shabby. It's
comfortable. Hey, mister, you know where the
refreshment stands are? No. It's a date, then.
A date? Baby brother comes into his own. Now
the boy who's learning to live the good life.
Trust me. is going to teach three careless crooks.

talk about the 2011 sci -fi film, Attack the
Block. I know you like sci -fi, but I don't know
if you like this one. It was weird. Like... Probably.
What if what if I robot didn't have a robot and
had aliens instead? Like it was. It's not really
that, but it was weird. But overall, I enjoyed
why I enjoyed the experience of watching the
movie. It's probably not a movie I would watch
again. But according to Dave, this is the movie
that got him excited for when they announced
Boyega as Finn. in the sequel trilogy to Star
Wars. So it kind of all ties back to Star Wars
for us. The reason why we are doing Attack of
the Block next episode here on the podcast. Anything
you'd like to promote? Working on some brand
new video content for our YouTube channel. Yay.
All right. Very cool. Very cool. Looking forward
