Halloween is my favorite holiday. I don’t like to dress up in costumes, and I am not terribly fond of the traditional Halloween candies. But I love to decorate my front yard with all sorts of scary Halloween paraphernalia. I am particularly proud of my graveyard, which sports over a dozen headstones and half a dozen skeletons. I have several life-size animated monsters, spotlights, and two fog machines. I actually own more Halloween decorations than I have Christmas decorations. Often, people will stop to take pictures of my yard on Halloween night. I go all out.
I was not able to decorate last year, however. We had contracted a lawn specialist to fertilize and aerate our grass for the fall. That was supposed to happen sometime in early September, which is about the same time that I like to pull out the Halloween stuff from storage. The company kept pushing back the date, saying that they were too busy to come out and aerate the lawn. October arrived, but I could not decorate for Halloween knowing that the contractor was coming out with wire-eating equipment. The guy finally came the week before Halloween, too late to decorate.
So I was pretty psyched about setting out my Halloween gear this year. Only I can’t. This year, we will be packing up the family to go to Disney World for two weeks, right in the middle of October. There are a lot of cool things to do in Disney World around Halloween. One of them is not keeping an eye on your yard decorations to make sure that they are not stolen or blown away by the wind. It’s aggravating, but there are worse reasons to be aggravated than “I’m going to Disney World for two weeks”, right? But on the surface: no decorations this year, either.
I’ll still be at Target on the day after Halloween though. Waiting outside the front doors just before they open, like I’m practicing for Black Friday. Target has all of their Halloween stuff on sale for half price that morning, so it’s worth it to get up early. Paper towels, candy, decorations, baking supplies, orange Oreos, costumes for the kids — all half off. I fill up a cart or two every year. Because next year, oh yes, I will have the scariest yard in town. Just wait and see!
