When Sega launched Streets of Rage on the Genesis, it served as the company’s direct response to Capcom’s arcade monster, Final Fight. For its time, it brought classic side-scrolling beat ’em up action into living rooms, allowing players to choose between Axel Stone, Adam Hunter, and Blaze Fielding to clean up a syndicate-corrupted city.

While the core mechanics laid the foundation for one of gaming’s greatest trilogy arcs, looking back at the original reveals its primitive nature. The combat, while functional, lacks the fluid combo chains, running moves, and polished hit detection that would later define the series. Enemy AI demonstrates surprisingly smart behavior and aggressive positioning, but the technical constraints of the hardware show through in stiff animations and muted audio effects. Still, calling in a police cruiser to blast a missile across the screen remains a timeless pleasure, even if the overall package feels like a proof-of-concept compared to what followed.
