About this Episode

This episode explores the potential dangers of brain-computer interfaces and the risks children face when navigating content on YouTube. Discussion also covers rumors regarding a Zack Snyder director's cut of Justice League, the role of voice command technology in modern media, and nostalgic memories of 90s technology.

On this Altergeek, I'll be talking about is YouTube

safe for kids? Does a Zack Snyder cut of Justice

League exist? The continuing of social media

clickbait, the surgeon who wants to connect your

brain to the internet, and voice commands of

the future. All this and more on Altergeek. Altered

Megatron on Altered Geek. Hello and welcome to...

Altered geek. I'm your host Stephen C Phillips

and as always thank you for tuning in So what's

new with you guys this week for me? Well I've

been having some commentaries on the social medias

as far as the podcast and also been Stirring

the pot as it were with one particular conversation,

but that's neither here nor there if you're wondering

why the shorter intro I figured it would be better

just to get right into the show rather than having

the minute -long song. Although I do still enjoy

it. I may be in the market for a much shorter

one, like say 10 seconds, 15 seconds, some kind

of a jingle, but I think both of them work. I'll

probably use them intermittently throughout the

show, but... Yeah, we just concluded the top

100 countdown. So if you're into that, it was

the top 100 villains countdown. So it's actually

kind of funny that my number one was the number

one. I'm not sure exactly how, but I'm quite

pleased with the way the list turned out, especially

with the iconic nature, the villainy and everything

else. A lot of disagreements, a lot of conversation,

very fun. So yeah, be sure to check that out

over on the GeekCast Radio feed. So, getting

into some of the conversation. I'm just going

to get into the listener feedback, and this one

was by Bradmull who says in response to the last

episode, I'm a crazy person? I probably will

still record. And that's because one, the show

for Future Imperfect ended and I did not have

any coverage. I was supposed to have a guest

host and then that fell through and then I was

supposed to have a guest host again and that

fell through so I didn't record. And I'll regardless

have one next week. I'll have in all things Transformers

as well and a Legends of the Brave and the Bold

which... I'll be doing most of those on Monday

night because next week is TFG1 Mike's wedding

which I'll be flying out to Chicago for and Yeah,

his wedding is next Wednesday. It's crazy. We're

already in December here. It seems like It was

just earlier this year already But yeah, so I

will be his best man at his wedding. I will be

there Visiting flying in gonna take the the whole

L train network because one the thing of riding

with complete strangers and an uber Kind of freaks

me out especially with the recent privacy hack

Security hack thing that happened all of that

To I don't want to pay an obscene amount of money

for a one -day trip to get to TFG when Mike's

house or apartment, and so I'm going to take

the L -Train network. I'm kind of familiar with

it anyway because I had taken it when my wife

and I went in 2008. We had to figure out that

whole mess anyway. Because we stayed in Evanston

when we went the last time that was in 2008 during

the Funny enough when President Obama got elected

We were not there for that occasion. It would

just happen to be that particular week Because

they had the whole setup for him to speak and

John McCain to speak on one particular night

We just stayed away from that block Our hotel

was close enough. We could hear the the the ranting

and the cheering and everything out in the the

great beyond of Chicago. I'll be taking the Yellow

Train network after I get off my flight. That'll

be interesting, trying to figure out where that

is from the airport. I think it's right by there,

honestly. I did a Google map. It should not actually

take as long. I'm going to walk for part of it

because I refuse to do the bus. extremely like

I used to be this person that I like yeah what

the heck let's spend some money when my wife

and I got together it kind of changed I became

this like extremely cheap person in the sense

that we don't have any money and I stopped acting

like we had money so it's just made it easier

to save so yeah I'll be taking the L train network

Which will cost me significantly less than an

uber or renting a car which It was gonna cost

me like 150 bucks to rent a car for two days

or for a day and a half So I was like this is

stupid. So yeah so anyways Getting into back

to the the comment on Brad. I still will be recording

altered geek through the end of the year Just

because this is kind of my my weekly soapbox

as it were He says, getting into, as for Pixar,

the films are mainly made and advertised to kids.

Yes, some include adult themes or jokes, but

adult fans shouldn't expect that type of storytelling

from every Pixar release. He says, I love their

Phase One stuff, pre -Nemo. I enjoyed Cars 2

and Planes for what they are. I don't like Brave

or Inside Out, but my kids love them. Justice

League, wah. The mustache thing is an unfortunate

result of Josh coming in and wanting to change

Zack's vision. Cavill was contracted to another

film, so he didn't need to shave it off. Joss's

reshoots added more confusion to the film and

WB wanting it to be two hours just ruined it.

Funny enough, there actually is talks that, and

it's been rumors and then it wasn't and then

it was, that there may be a Zack Snyder cut of

the film. that it exists in relevant form which

is basically just pre special effects and it

had a lot of finished effects and music but the

the rumor has it that Warner Brothers CEO which

Warner Brothers is their own worst enemy they're

trying to combat Marvel and Disney and this whole

thing and can't seem to get out of their own

way let DC and let the film and the director,

for any of the DC films, handle it how they need

to, as long as they're holding within the guidelines

of the character. Leave them alone. Kevin...

Sujihara had mandated a two -hour runtime, which

that's kind of ridiculous in itself. I mean,

granted, I enjoy shorter films, honestly, but...

That film is rushed and felt I mean I enjoyed

it. I really liked the film, but it was a cobbled

mess and I guess that They were insisting at

the time that Joss is nearly completing Snyder's

vision Which we now know isn't true and They

had significantly adjusted Snyder's tone who's

kind of set the precedent of how like Wonder

Woman Aquaman like all these characters we like

he introduced them in Batman v Superman and I

think that the problem is the fact it's not Snyder

like everybody was thinking it's WB and That

you know there's rumors that the the Snyder cut

would never be released which another assembly

cut Is in fact all that exists with minimal effects

and music that it would cost millions. I think

honestly they need to come out with it Now that

it's it's kind of gotten to this point because

this is almost ended up being like the Superman

2 Scenario all over again And it was another

WB thing honestly and you had two different directors

With two different cuts of the film, which that's

gonna end up being the same scenario here and

I have a feeling that the Snyder cut is going

to be the definitive go -to if it actually gets

produced and put to DVD because I do agree that

the film was cobbled and he did come up with

all of the renovation for everything. Granted,

I did enjoy the music in this edition because

I like Elfman's stuff better but I don't entirely

think that Joss was necessarily the right one

to come to this particular film. Let him have

Batgirl, leave this alone. There was also another

thing that was brought up that Warner Brothers

apparently wanted to fire Snyder anyway. This

is his way of getting out without being fired.

I've seen those rumors floating about. I don't

know how much truth there is to that. But I still

think regardless it's a bit ridiculous that this

has gotten that far and obviously the fact that

the film's getting destroyed by kids animated

movies and everything else goes to show you that

It probably would have done really well had there

not been all of this Rotten Tomatoes garbage

before the film came out and the whole thing

with Zack and Joss and the whole WB thing I think

that honestly this that it's become such a mess

that most of the people associated with Warner

Brothers and DC right now are kind of like yeah

I'm ready to leave ship like it's just it's become

too much of a mess you're getting like almost

the Sony treatment of Spider -Man all over again

in this instance yeah we screwed up that's reboot

ah that's screwed up that's reboot It's it's

just it's ridiculous. They need to just let DC

Comics handle this stuff and just step out I

know they own DC Comics, but that's like it's

the same scenario of like Disney and Marvel like

let Warner Brothers finance and just have WB,

you know have DC do what they do and just leave

it So and then Ben Affleck, you know his as Brad

mentions needs to just cancels contract because

then the reshoots his acting or his not acting

is reading a script Batman deserves a better

actor and George Clooney had fun with it. No,

I think George Clooney was terrible in the film.

I honestly think Ben Affleck is the best Rendition

of Bruce Wayne Batman we've gotten I think that

the the thing is is that There's just been crappy

rewrites and reshoots and I think that it's just

it's taking its toll and the guy's just like

I don't I see the writing on the wall I don't

know if I want to be associated with this anymore

because honestly he's he's a good actor he's

got he's a good director he's a good writer and

to be kind of beaten with a shovel by these these

juggernauts is kind of ridiculous for him at

this stage in the game The fact that you've got

most of the Marvel Phase One actors still wanting

to keep their characters even with their contracts

done goes to show you that Marvel is giving the

creative freedom and the love to their story

and their actors that WB just clearly isn't.

And then Brad says, I think the opening box office

was lulled because the trailer was bad and if

you're doing Justice League, just bring in Darkseid.

The one complaint fans have with Marvel is now

after 20 films. We've only seen Thanos sitting

in a chair. Oh, it's gotten worse with the Infinity

War trailer that just dropped because people

are now making the comparison. It looks like

Joss Whedon and have done these crazy memes kind

of joking around with how... Whedon and Thanos

look identical and they took away his armor,

his helmet, and they gave him like almost like

a wife beater looking uniform and then just had

him show up and he's like instead of his dark

purple that he's known for he's like a pink.

It's so ridiculous like in this trailer. I mean

I give it props for the rest of the trailer but

this particular aspect is just stupid. And then

he says I have no doubt the Star Wars will bank

big time give it a week or two and it will hit

1 billion I'm pretty positive on that and this

will no doubt tell whether Rian Johnson gets

his His trilogy or not, but I have a feeling

he'll get it regardless The trailers look great.

The hype is there and we have competent filmmaker

in charge. I totally agree Ace Ventura reboot?

No. It was a thing of the 90s and films like

Dumb and Dumber 2 and Zoolander 2 show that type

of comedy isn't popular now. If anything, I'd

prefer a sequel to When Nature Calls, but fear

it's probably too late for Carey to give us a

hit again. I clamored and I wanted a sequel to

When Nature Calls. It's funny that Jim Carey

actually had all his marbles back in the 90s

because he realized he almost didn't do Dumb

and Dumber 2. when nature calls, or not Dumb

and Dumber 2, Ace Ventura when nature calls.

It took a lot of pushing for him to do it and

then he had all these precedents set up and so

he did. He did do the film and that was the only

sequel he had ever done until Dumb and Dumber

2, which proved that Ace Ventura was kind of

his one go -to for a sequel. Dumb and Dumber

2 was just terrible and I have a feeling that

because the comedy has shot differently and we're

in such a PC culture now, which is unfortunate

that people just can't take a joke and film,

we can sit here and fling accusations left and

right, not saying that it's right for people

to be treating people the way they are because

that's not what I'm saying at all because those

people are scumbags. And they deserve everything

that's coming towards them, but I think that

You know it's It we're in such a culture that

everybody gets so butthurt over something that

said or or ooh, you know somebody bumped elbows

with me, you know, they're there they're you

know, it's just we're in such a Whiny culture

just looking at social media. We're in such a

whiny culture It's it's gotten to this point

where we're just That kind of stuff just won't

fly now I mean think about it George Carlin if

he were still alive today would be having a field

day with this stuff But people would be beating

him with a shovel left and right Just because

they wouldn't tolerate his kind of comedy or

his his crude Honesty and things when he's he's

telling it. Yeah, it's just I can't I can't fathom

it. As much as I would love to see an Ace Ventura

3 with Jim Carrey, I just don't see it, and I

hope that it never gets rebooted, because like

any reboot, they never do as well as the original,

and it's always going to be held to this standard

and never hold up. I think I answered the majority

of that. So yeah and then the the first time

like going back an extra episode like I Brand

also says that whatever Ryan Johnson does with

new trilogy. I hope it's not a continuing story,

you know It can't be called episode 10 11 or

12. Well, it certainly won't be because Daisy

Ridley actually wants nothing to do with the

the Rey character after episode 9. She wants,

she wants out. So, and I can see that she's,

you know, this flung her into superstardom. She

doesn't want to get pigeonholed. You know, I

have a feeling because she's this generation's

Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. I can

definitely see that and, and, Hamill didn't want

to be either. Although, his career went into

voice acting and that's where he... It's a parody

account of Variety. And people were retweeting

this and commenting, saying, I love Star Wars,

but I will protest this movie so fast and all

this. And even the actor's like, I think I've

done my damage. I'm not coming back. But the

link, when you click it, it goes to, and I am

so sick of these type of things popping up. They

go to Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up 1987

music video on YouTube. Basically, Rick Rolling

people. I am so sick of seeing these things because

there's so much, like, we've got enough crap

to deal with fake news and fake articles. Like,

we don't, yeah, it was funny to begin with. Like,

just stop. It's gotten ridiculous. I don't know.

So I'm gonna take a quick break and come back

on the other side with voice controlling your

TV. We'll be back after this. And we're back.

So if you're a fan of Star Trek or anything in

the sci -fi realm where people talk to their

electronics or their computer and get an answer,

well... It's not that far off from actual science.

We have the Amazon Fire TV owners can now control

Hulu, NBC, CBS, and other video apps via their

voice. They announced earlier yesterday that

video apps using Alexa and their voice will allow

you to watch, play, pause, rewind, fast forward

and more. for your individual shows, networks,

or specific genre of programming. Yeah, I mean,

I think that's pretty cool, honestly. However,

this is like the advent of how back in the day

they came up with the remote control with the

infrared so you didn't physically have to get

up and turn the channel on your stuff. This kind

of eliminates the use of having to have like

a wireless mouse or pointer or a remote as well

to control it because you can, you know, tell

it exactly what you want to watch rather than

having to dig if you kind of know. So you can

you can go up and more or less say like, you

know, Alexa play, you know, Supernatural or Arrow

or Star Trek The Next Generation Season 1, you

know, just something. And it allows you to also

navigate by hitting, you know, saying play, next

episode, last episode, start over, play from

the beginning, depending on the channel and whether

it's supported. But I honestly think that that's

kind of a new innovation that's going to stick

around, I think this is going to replace the

remote control eventually. I think that we're

going to see a lot more interactive devices interconnected

throughout our houses that are going to be more

in tune. Not saying I want it connected to me

per se, which I'll get to that in a minute. But

I think that this is kind of the wave of the

future. Even if you look at Star Trek, we have

this in the majority of the shows. The only one

that didn't have it was Enterprise in the original

series. I could be wrong on Enterprise. I'm a

little flaky on my information there. But I know

the original series that didn't have it. But

everything else has, including Discovery, which

is 10 years before. I'm throwing that in there

as a little quick jab. But I do think that this

is cool. And they did announce in June that Amazon

would have a tool for developers of cable TV

apps, streaming services, and other providers

that would let them add voice control to their

apps. I think that this is going to be really

cool as apps are updated in the coming weeks

and months. the high -tech innovations. Do people

really want objects plugged into their brains?

I'm just being serious here. I saw this article

about a surgeon. This was on Technology Review.

They have this surgeon who wants to connect you

to the internet with a brain implant. and he

believes that in the near future we will allow

doctors to insert electrodes into our brains

so we can communicate directly with computers

and each other. I'm good. I'm honestly good.

I don't want the whole, you know, Blade Runner

scenario going on. I don't really want the whole,

the Matrix. Like, I'm good. I don't need to be

connected to people. I guess this Eric Luthard

or something, 44 year old scientist and brain

surgeon has spent a lot of time imagining. And

he's published two novels of techno thrillers

of human beings have elected to get computer

hardware implanted directly into their brains,

a lot of seamless connection between people and

computers. So he's wanting to bring his stories

to real life. I'm good not doing that. He says

that a true fluid neural integration is going

to happen. It's just a matter of time. I'll be

long dead before that happens, so I'm perfectly

fine not having chips and neural networks implanted

into my head. Don't seem that you know, and this

kind of goes along with the Elon Musk Neuralink,

you know, I just don't really want Technology

integrated into my body the same reason I won't

get the microchip in my hand or wherever it is

that has like your ID your credit card your your

passwords, whatever I Won't get one of those

implanted into me either. I don't like the idea

of putting chips or electronics in my body now

if it's something that allows you to see or to

live or To regain a limb or something like that.

I could see the the merit in it, but Simply to

connect to the internet. Yeah, that's really

what I want to do I want to have somebody get

their brain hacked by an internet hacker so that

they go and do the worst thing imaginable like

that's not like I know that I'm stretching there,

but I think that there's a good purpose in technology

and human evolvement or bettering ourselves,

but I don't think that this is necessarily a

great idea. But yeah, the guy wants to do it

so he can kind of decode the brain so that he

can kind of... He more or less wants to have

people be able to control or play games with

their brain and use these plugs. I'm perfectly

fine not doing this. Now, the electrodes, they

can use some of these things for epileptic seizure

patients, which again, I could kind of see that.

being a helpful object because nobody wants to

have to take medication. For somebody that loves

technology as much as I do and loves to sit in

front of it, I don't like the idea of AI. I don't

like the idea of putting tech in my body. Those

are two things that just kind of terrify me on

technology. I'm not one of those people. What

do you guys think about this? This is just creepy

to me, honestly. I gotta move on to something

better. There is a Kevlar -based synthetic cartilage

that mimics real tissue that funny enough was

developed in University of Michigan. I saw this

and I bookmarked it. Joseph Zhu, or XU, I can't,

I don't know what that even says, but Z or Zhu

something, I don't know. He's a Michigan engineer,

anyway, who developed a synthetic replacement

for cartilage, dubbed Kevlarthlage. That's hard

to say. The new material combines Kevlar, nanofibers,

and polyvinyl alcohol to recreate the magic of

cartilage. It's like a rubber -like padding that

covers and protects the ends, just like your

real bones. They're doing some testing on it

right now, and it's water -soluble synthetic

polymer. They're hoping that they can turn this

into a way to... like real cartilage in the sense

that, you know, when you use your cartilage,

each step pounds the cartilage between the bones,

forcing water out and making the tissue more

pliable. Once you stop for a rest though, the

cartilage recovers by absorbing more water and

the cycling begins again. So he said that this

synthetic cartilage works the same way by releasing

H2 under stress and then later sponging it back

up, trapped by the PVA. So I think that this

is kind of cool, and this would really be beneficial

for people who have had cartilage tears, cartilage

issues. I think that this could be kind of revolutionary

in people that have had massive surgeries where

they've had cartilage tears, and it would be

this highly potent, nigh -undamageable capability

that they could put in you that could help you

regain muscle movement. So I think that that's

kind of awesome, honestly. So I'm going to move

into another tech -based thing of GM's self -driving

cars. The AI thing that freaks me out. So it's

Chevy's self -driving Bolt. They drove it around

in San Francisco and they're planning to have

these self -driving cars ready for a rideshare

service within two years as the automaker looks

beyond traditional car ownership for new tech

-driven sources. The new model that all of these

services are pushing for is to not sell to individuals

but to own the vehicles themselves and they would

essentially drive themselves to repair centers,

they could drive themselves to... customers that

need a ride and drive them to and fro. It would

basically be like a robotaxi. Think Idiocracy

or any of those films where cars just randomly

pull up and they drive you. It's funny how real

life mimics pop culture more than pop culture

mimics real life. It's really odd how the tables

have turned on that whole scenario. But anyways,

they're saying that they plan on having a fleet

of these self -driving cars in operation in 2019,

and obviously run by the automaker or a partner,

which let's be for real, it'll be GM running

them. But they want to be a major player in the

future robotaxi business. So again, we're talking

people that are losing jobs to this. But I guess

it's supposedly safer. Who knows? I don't know.

I think that they're just trying to keep cash

in the pockets. And they think it's going to

change everything. There's other people saying

that it's going to be a crowded space because

Uber. And and all these services like that so

I I can definitely see how this is gonna Basically

take effect at some point in the future I'm not

all that enthused with a self -driving car However,

if you're in the scenario, we're in a big city

or you're in a place where you need a car and

you need now and You have these vehicles just

kind of cruising around. It could be kind of

a welcome thing to kind of play with. So I'm

going to take a quick break, come back on the

other side with the YouTube bit, a little bit

of movie kind of news pertaining to superheroes

and some actors that are butt hurt over not being

cast. So be back after this. so I Guess I'll

start off with a little bit of butthurt there

was an article. I don't a lot of these sites

I don't take a lot of their articles to be credible.

I just read the news bits but Cosmic book news

I don't know how much I trust their articles,

but Nevertheless I don't know why this guy keeps

getting Air time on all these superhero sites

like he's not been cast as one And people are

like insinuating he's in Justice League reshoot

some people are insisting that you know You know

all the comments on Superman's mustache. Oh,

he's you know like Green Lantern. Oh, he's Shazam.

Oh like it's just it's just a BS article, but

anyways After all said and done, he hasn't been

cast for a single superhero. And it says that

while the actor doesn't rule a comic book movie

out completely while appearing on some podcast,

he lets it be known that he doesn't think any

of the superhero movies have been all that good.

And he says, I'm trying to answer that in a way

that it's not going to get me into trouble. He

says, all right, might as well go for it. I haven't

seen a superhero movie in a long time where I

thought, I wish I was in that. He says You know,

I'm more interested in now on my artistic credibility

doing the projects that satiate me as an artist

and make me feel like I'm doing what I love and

He says if a director came around said I have

this idea but at the end of the day no one's

asked I'm going out of my way to do it Oh that

explains a lot MTV host for the podcast. Yeah

But Anyways, there was this this thing that posted

says he finally comes out and says that he thinks

none of the superhero movies have been good and

then I was looking at the comments and I I couldn't

help it and Somebody commented has he done anything

worth seeing how does this guy keep getting attention?

I'll ever hear about his him in articles about

roles. He didn't get and I commented ha ha ha

ha and My comment before that one was in response

to the, you know, Army Hammer doesn't think any

superhero movies are good, and I says probably

because he wasn't cast as any of them. And everybody

lost their mind with my comment and started,

it like blew up with likes, laughter, and everything

else on Facebook. Somebody put the the meme of

Chris Farley going that is correct and where

he's like pulling off his shirt from Billy Madison,

which is just disturbing But yeah, I I Just I

can't I mean yeah, there's some crappy superhero

movies, but not all of them are that bad Marvel

seems to have a lot of the their tone down and

I think that when it comes to DC, I think Snyder

does have the aesthetic to pull it off. I just,

I don't, I don't know. And Army Hammer just needs

to just, why are we giving, and I'm guilty of

this too, but why are we giving so much attention

to these actors who comment and give their thoughts

on, I mean, I know I'm giving my thoughts on

everything, too, and I know everybody on the

internet does that. But why are we giving so

much airtime to these actors who haven't gotten

cast as something and are commenting on, you

know, what they think of it, of, oh, I didn't

get cast, and, you know, or bringing up, you

know, oh, Michael Keaton, this is why he didn't

do Batman 3. Like, really? That's like 30 years

ago. Like, stop bringing it up. I just don't

understand that stuff. But something that's kind

of interesting to note is, aside from getting

a new, possibly new Batman game, or some nature

of that, WB Montreal is the studio behind Arkham

Origins, which the game wasn't that bad. Some

of the aesthetics weren't all that great, but

this is Rock Studio Studios recently said that

fans will lose their minds when their next game

is revealed, but it's unclear exactly when, but

WB Games Montreal is making their next game much

more clear. According to a Facebook post, they're

looking for a bunch of programmers and technical

directors. It says, do you want to join a passionate

team working on expanding the DC universe in

the interactive space? And then it kind of goes

on from there. Which leads me to believe that

they're going to either expand with more characters

or do a Justice League game. To kind of flesh

things out. I don't know. I'm hopeful. I'll probably

play it if it hits the PC. I didn't even bother

playing Arkham Knight. because one, I'd seen

it, and two, it just didn't interest me. And

yeah, driving the Batmobile would have been cool,

but I don't really want to get stuck on a time

constraint. That's why I hated the Zazz level

and actually avoided it when I started playing

after the first time I played Arkham City. But

Kevin Conroy, Ron Paulson, and Cal Dodd team

with Andrea Romano for a new animated series.

So yeah, there was It's for a show called the

gang's all here a new and mid -series code developed

by Paulson and Byron Burton of THR the Hollywood

Reporter So Yeah, he apparently got the the attention

of Paulson at a fan convention with the pitch

now that It doesn't give everyone the green light,

but apparently he liked it. The Gang's All Here

is building the series around the talent and

unusual approach for animation. As Connery put

it, it's certainly unique for me because it's

getting involved with the creative people earlier

as the package is being put together. It's aimed

at adults and adolescents, centers on an animal

cast of actors. as they star in their own films

and navigate the pitfalls of the entertainment

industry. The sale of the series will depend

on the creative team's own celebrity, but just

in case you don't recognize the names, then they've

got Conroy, it's Batman, Paulson, Ninja Turtles,

Romano, the former retired voice cast director,

Dodd who's played Logan Wolverine on the animated

90s series. Definitely down with that Honestly,

like I I want to know more I might have to get

Rob Paulson on at some point so And then you

know, there's there's a mr. Rogers documentary

won't you be my neighbor acquired by focus features

Which is kind of cool Just about everybody grew

up with mr. Rogers from the 60s to 2001 so I'd

be interested in checking that out. His show

is, I will say one thing, you know, you may have

the land of make -believe, but he also had a

lot of educational moments for kids that, quite

frankly, we don't get in today's film, TV world,

so I'm kind of, kind of glad that there, you

know, there were shows like that that I can show

my kids still today. And since I'm talking this,

this... boat of shows that I can't show my kids

today. There's an article on TechCrunch called

YouTube is not for kids. And the interesting

part about this article is it's talking about

a long medium post by James Bertel regarding

the nonsensical and potentially damaging kids

content on YouTube. And he moves from video to

video finding stranger and stranger examples

for... For some he's talking about the the advertising

is hit in the service the disgusting comments

were found below videos aimed at kids and of

kids Strangers with various motives are watching

all these videos for various reasons and that's

not okay. Even if one child enjoys one nursery

rhyme There are so much content is both ridiculous

and dangerous lurking under the surface of the

service that you're almost guaranteed to step

on a content mine And he's not wrong I have to

physically sit there if I'm gonna put my kids

on YouTube to watch anything, I have to sit there

with them or I have to be holding the device

that they're watching because you get these suggested

videos which don't necessarily relate or don't

necessarily want them watching and then you end

up with advertising, you end up with comments,

so you have to filter a lot of stuff from your

kids if you want them to actually be on any of

this. And I've let my kids watch stuff on YouTube

on occasion. Just depending on what it is to

keep them amused, but I've recently just started

downloading the videos because I don't want them

sitting on YouTube I'd rather have them on a

flash drive of whatever they're watching because

Yeah, I don't want them seeing all the other

stuff so They take the snake through the rabbit

hole of the content that is you know They start

with a search for cars, so if you type cars,

it says Disney, Cars, Lightning McQueen, Spider

-Man, Jackson Storm, and Francesco's something,

and Chick -Pix. And then it shows them, you know,

short of vehicles crashing and burning and exploding

and whatnot. And then it kind of shows them flying

into space or whatnot. I don't know, and then

there's... You know exploding cars there's grown

-ups playing with cars, which is just weird There's

so much I don't know It's such a tricky process

as they they kind of mentioned in there of trying

to find stuff that your kids can watch There's

so much garbage on YouTube to I Don't know YouTube

is kind of a a cesspool. It really is. And it

almost teaches that collectibles and stuff is

the road to happiness instead of, you know, just

finding something to do. Like we used to do back

in the day, you know, actually play with your

toys. You know, there are great videos on YouTube.

that doesn't take you to a black hole when you're

on your phone, but if you're on a device or a

PC or a screen, you really do have to keep an

eye on it. I found so many educational videos,

and like I said, I just have to download them

now, because if I don't, I don't want to have

to filter. I found some Jack Hanna videos that

my kids like to watch. And they're from the 90s.

Well, they don't sell them. If they would sell

them on DVD, if I could find them on DVD anywhere,

like where Jack Hanna goes to the zoo and talks

about these animals and blah, blah, blah. Because

most of his modern programming my kids don't

really get into. I've tried to have them watch

parts of it on the whole thing, but they just

wouldn't sit there through it. Where's the 90s

stuff seem to catch their attention more which

is kind of funny So I I essentially tried to

I Essentially tried to to find these to buy them

because I'm like if they're gonna watch these

I Have no problem Picking these up like I will

pay it doesn't matter, but they're only on VHS.

You can't get them on DVD You can't get the seasons.

So I've had to resort to downloading individual

videos as I find them on YouTube and putting

them on a flash drive for my kids to watch. And

so like I currently have like maybe six, seven

episodes of them and that's not really how I

want to do it or, you know, what I want to teach

them. But I should be able to get, there should

be a way to get that content, that old content

back. I mean, granted they're VHS, you know,

ported stuff to YouTube for one. so they're not

great quality. I would love to have good quality

stuff to give them, but it just doesn't exist.

That kind of just reminds me of an article I

saw from this guy on Twitter, at Matt Whitlock

PM. He says, without revealing your actual age,

which is something you remember that if I told

you, if you told a younger person, they wouldn't

understand. I just started laughing at the pictures

that were coming through. you know, the relationship

between two items, and it shows like a pencil,

like number two pencil, and an audio cassette.

You know, well, obviously rewinding, and then

somebody has like a card reader, you know, for

punch card. Or, you know, it's just stuff that

made me laugh, like, you know, there's hit clips,

there's, you know, They, you know, they showed

LimeWire, you know, comic book store, you know,

Scholastic Book Fair, you know, just a variety

of things, Pogs, you know, I still remember majority

of these things or like the old, you know, number

codes of how to read text in the Stone Age, you

know, when you'd have a beeper and you'd send

numbers and you just flip the pager upside down.

Like 07734 was hello upside down. It's it it's

just it's really funny when you stop to think

about it How how things used to be compared to

how they are now You know like pull out notes

that are on here like CD players that don't fit

in your pocket Without the anti skip or stuff

like that. I don't know. What are some things

you guys remember? I mean, I used to even have

a TV that you had to have a turn dial To change

from UHF and VHF to watch I mean granted we couldn't

really watch anything on it unless it was like

basic basic cable, but if we plugged in our VCR

we could watch more than that, but still It's

just funny, you know getting to see a lot of

this old retro stuff coming back Just from people

that remember it on Twitter. So I mean there

is there is some good stuff on social media So

as most of you may know, I have a storefront

on Teespring. It's teespring .com slash stores

slash altered dash geek. I have a majority of

items on there. The sooner or later the mouse

will own it all. T -shirts, altered geek t -shirts,

hoodies, mugs, get altered get geeky shirt, future

imperfect with, you know, the ship and the title

and the con badge. all things Transformers with

the title on the Ultimus Prime, zip -up hoodie

of Altered Geek, Ultimus Prime t -shirts, Future

Imperfect Command shirt with the Future Imperfect

emblem with the title of the show on the back,

and variety of colors for the t -shirt version,

basically Discovery, Star Trek Discovery colors.

And then there's the V -neck version as well

for like TOS. Colors and the long sleeve shirt,

which is TOS colors. So you almost get kind of

that TOS look I'm still I'm inquiring to them

if they have any that have like the black collar

around it because that would really set it off

because you get a long sleeve and Have the emblem

on there and it would look like a TOS t -shirt

or long sleeve Which would be really awesome

And then there's the the TOS hoodies that I've

got on there. So with the future of perfect comb

badge So if you want to buy any of those, part

of the proceeds do go to the show. They would

help me out tremendously. I think that getting

some nice gear to support the show and to not

only to support the show but keep yourself warm

and get yourself some items that actually would

help you is better than necessarily paying for

content in a different way. Be very appreciated

if people wanted to do that so You can get that

information there or on the episode post and

so I think I'm going to end this episode with

that and we'll be back next week after TFG1 Mike's

wedding and Maybe I'll have an update on that

scenario and maybe I'll live stream or do a manual

podcast as I'm walking through or going through

the L -Train network in Chicago. Could be kind

of fun. So until next time, get altered, get

geeky with the Altered Geeks.
