About this Episode

The hosts discuss movies and television shows that they revisit for comfort, exploring why certain childhood favorites still resonate. They reflect on the evolution of 80s franchises like Police Academy, the impact of sequels, and their experiences with series revivals. Additionally, they touch on recent comic book reading, the Power Rangers franchise, and a new graphic novel project on Kickstarter.

You are tuned in to Steve Megatron on Altered

Geek. Hello and welcome to Altered Geek. I'm

your host, Steve Megatron Phillips, and joining

me in this episode is... TFG1 Mike. Hello, hello.

So yes, we are back, and TFG1 Mike is back. I'm

medically and clinically dead at this point.

He murdered himself. Yeah, I I don't understand

this I've had tension and migraine headaches

headaches all my life As far as back as my teen

years, but for the last two weeks I have had

a nun's the only time I don't have a headache

is when I'm asleep Sometimes it gets worse. Sometimes

it gets better, but it doesn't go away all of

the time I've cut out caffeine. I've done this.

I've done that. I I don't know like every little

bit like I'm sitting here almost sitting back

not even My eyes are closed right now because

I can't handle the light from the screen of my

computer I don't even have my lights on in my

office right now. Like it's just so bad They're

not good man, no, no that's how no so Yeah, I'm

suffering from sinus issues It's so freaking

hot in my house without like it's humid And it's

because we don't have air conditioning like the

kids room does we we managed to borrow an air

conditioner from people we know Which is good

for them sucks for the rest of us, but I'm in

my basement. It's so freaking warm So yeah And

then the other story that Mike wanted to bring

up before we get to the conversation I brought

up on Twitter, which is things that we enjoyed

as a kid that still resonate with us now and

things that we enjoy revisiting when we need

something uplifting. Saturday night after we

were getting ready to put the kids to bed and

my oldest decides that it's a good idea to do

this wind up jump. He basically uppercutted you.

With his head. The top of his head cold cocked

me on my chin and for like two days I had this

huge knot on the one side of my chin and it looked

like my chin was lopsided and it was sort of

the touch and I like clanged my teeth together

which That side of my mouth is still a little

sore, but it's getting better day by day. It

was really hard to talk. This is the most talking

I've done all day between doing ATTF and this

and then work. And I also did stuff for DJ that

I've been trying to get to for a while. So my

jaw was hurting so bad I was having to take like...

painkillers and Before that I take muscle relaxers

because I had spasms in my back and my arm from

a lot of other crap with work with having to

sit there in awkward position doing data entry

and on a stupid Mac that The keyboard is not

laid out how I would want it so Yeah, the the

whole thing like it's it's still sore like I've

got a small not at the bottom of my chin now

But it's it's like almost gone Which I'm thankful

for, so I'm hoping by the end of the week it's

completely gone. But yeah, he uh... And it's

not the first time he's hurt me like that. When

he was little, he whipped a ball right at my

eye. He gave me a black eye. And he's headbutted

me too in the eye socket, which gave me a black

eye too. So... What are you gonna do? It's a

kid. It's a kid, yeah. So... I thought it would

be a good idea to do what is something that we

enjoyed as a kid that still resonates with us

now and that enjoy revisiting when we need something

uplifting because let's face it, we all need

that from time to time and myself and Mike are

no different here. That's when we resort to watch

the old stuff. It feels great. So, what are some

shows or some movies that you enjoy going back

to that you can just kind of tune out and that

you can just sit back and enjoy and not really

have to think about too much? Well, see, it's

interesting because we've had this for the longest

time, at least since we've had the remote control

podcast here at GCRN. TV has always been by season

so fall to spring kind of a thing in summer shows

and that comes in and midseason shows in January

and whatever until the regular shows return and

Right now as of this recording I found on Comcast

Xfinity, whatever it's calling itself these days

a channel called H &I, Heroes and Icons, and

they have this thing called the Day Shift, where

they have eight or nine hours every day of a

certain show. So right now, the lineup is Mondays

is Nash Bridges, Tuesdays is, oh God, House with

Gregory What's -His -Name or Hugh Laurie. Wednesdays

is Jag, Thursdays is something else, and then

Fridays is Numbers from 2005. On the weekends,

they run other programming, and they're about

to start up this weekend, I think it is, The

Pretender with Michael Weiss from the mid to

late 90s. I haven't seen that show since then,

so that's gonna be something interesting to go

back and re -watch, because I always enjoyed

that show. Things I normally go back to, The

Shield from FX, Person of Interest from CBS,

I really dig that show. There's a bunch of other

stuff, like obviously the original Knight Rider

and Airwolf and the A -Team and all of that.

I tried to catch a few of the new shows. One

new show, it's only 10 episodes, it was a mid

-season show, so you may or may not like it,

I don't know. It was called Reverie, basically

about people being stuck in this virtual reality

program kind of a thing, and it took a really

cool, interesting, strange turn at the end. So

it's kind of cool. As I said over on the ATTF

episode we just recorded, in the last ... Five

years, I think I've gone back and rewatched Beast

Machines seven different times. This last time

that I did it, I just kind of skipped through

certain episodes, but I absolutely love watching

Beast Machines back. I like both Beast Wars and

Beast Machines, but I don't know, I just, I like

Beast Machines a little more. Other stuff that

I've gone back and watched that isn't for a podcast

or anything. Don't know there really isn't much

that at least this summer that I've actively

gone back and watched over and over again When

it comes to movies, it just depends on what I'm

in the mood for I'll say this We have a subscription

does the stars premium channel on on our cable

package They they have ran Tron classic like

14 different times in the last two weeks Now,

when Tron Legacy came out, in 2011 or 2010 or

whatever that was, I had never seen the original.

The original came out in 1982. I was two years

old. It never actually hit my radar when I was

a kid growing up, growing into my teenage years,

into my young adult years, and now I'm an old

man. So I wanted to see it before I went to go

see Tron Legacy. So I finally saw it through

like... I don't know, nine different parts on

YouTube. The fact that I've seen it like four

different times in the last month and a half

on Starz is just crazy to me. See, I saw the

original back in the 90s because my stepdad had

the VHS tape and he's like, you like Star Trek,

you like Star Wars, here, try this. And we watched

it and I was like, OK, I mean, it was a little

tough to watch, just because it was so dated.

Back then it really wasn't that big of a deal

how dated it was, but watching it again within

the last 10 years, it looks really dated. While

I don't dislike it or anything, I did prefer

Legacy much, much more. I like Legacy for the

innovations it had in it. The innovations in

the soundtrack. Oh yeah, the soundtrack is amazing.

I absolutely love that. I like the original Tron.

As I said, I've watched it like three or four

different times in the last two or three months.

I really do like it. I think it was the technological

marvel of its time when it came to computer -type

filmmaking. Even though it wasn't done with computers,

it was done all with practical effects kind of

a thing, most of it. I don't know. I'm not sure.

For me to go back and do a feel -good kind of

a thing, that's like watching Nash Bridges over

again, which I've been doing or Boy Meets World,

which we have to watch more of that for podcast

or meets world eventually. Kind of a thing. I'm

reading comics more than more than ever, not

just I'm reading for the podcast, but like I'm

really the full bag has so many different comic

things that we're doing. And yes, I know I'm

kind of promoting at this point, but this month

we've got episode 324 to 327. 324 is a WWE trade

from Boom Studios. 325 is a TMNT Trial of Krang

storyline, which the first time in 11 months

that we've done a TMNT comic in the pull bag.

Uh, 326 is going to be a Brian Michael Bendis

five first issues from five of his original,

like, create our own series. And then to prepare

for the Arrowverse crossover later this year,

we're going to cover the first volume of the

new 52 Batwoman series. So that's really where

my head's at when it comes to like stuff that

I need for enjoyment. It's not necessarily going

back and watching what I love. It's finding out

what new stuff. That I can get into Yeah, I periodically

go back and watch various older series, but that's

just more so because I enjoy them And it's it's

not that I dislike new shows I just more often

than not I just enjoy the old stuff better. So

So like I've gone back and I've been rewatching

more so marathoning, various episodes of all

the different Star Trek series, with the exception

of like animated Enterprise and Discovery. And

so I've been watching a lot of TNG and a lot

of DS9, a little bit of Voyager here and there,

a little bit of TOS, but pretty much DS9 and

TNG, just because I enjoy the cast that much

more. The more I watch them, the more I get sections

of the storyline that I was missing before. It

just happens to be a random episode I'm watching.

I'm like, oh, this looks pretty good. And then

I click on it, watch it. And then I'm like, oh,

I didn't realize that this was a part of the

thing. So like I just actually started reading

a Star Trek book and I'm gonna be getting a second

one soon and they both have to do with DS9 and

TNG. So like this particular DS9 book that I'm

reading has like Captain Picard on the Enterprise

E still with Geordi and Worf. Worf is the first

officer and then Dr. Crusher Picard and Dr. Kroescher

are married and then you know the Borger coming

across the Federation space for war and then

you've got Captain Esri Dax and then so because

it takes place like years after Nemesis right

and then Rikers on the USS Titan with Deanna

Troy sweet so yeah so it's it's there's a lot

going on in there so it's it's been a lot of

fun to um to kind of read these and uh see how

um see how everything's uh transpired in the

universe even though it's not canon it's still

fun um so i don't know i've been kind of trying

to to kind of branch out read a little bit try

to uh listen to podcasts uh lately Just various

different kinds, whether they're inspirational

ones or things on better marketing or things

on the podcasting sphere of changes or things

yet to come or things that people don't understand.

And then just various other geeky shows. So it's

been a lot of fun kind of going around between

all those different aspects and seeing just kind

of what's changed since the last time I've watched

a lot of it or listened to a lot of it. Kind

of like Power Rangers with, you know, watching

the latest episode of the, what is it, Super

Samurai or something like that? No, no, no, it's

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel. It's episode

10 of this season. It's Dimensions in Danger.

I've watched it, finally. I enjoyed it for what

it was, but I think Kyle Higgins and the artists

that are doing the Boom Studios ongoing comic

right now, they ran the first big Power Rangers

event. uh... so far for the boom studio series

called shattered grid i think they did a better

job there and i understand in eight or ten comic

issues you have all that time to stretch out

the plot and whatever and in twenty two minutes

twenty three minutes of a of a tv series you

don't uh... it really just felt like the j d

f show which i love j d f we interviewed him

uh... number years ago uh... And I don't mind

that, I just felt like the overall plot of Dimensions

in Danger didn't really, like, there was no real

danger, whereas in Shattered Grid in the comics,

Lord Draken pretty much takes over, like, there's

this, it's, yeah. I enjoyed the show for what

it was, but... The comics are really where it's

at for any of us old school Power Rangers fans,

I think. It's what we've wanted for so long.

And even now that Hasbro has Power Rangers, I

don't know what the first Hasbro series thing,

like the next new series after Super Ninja Steel,

like next February in 2019 when they debut a

new one. I think it's every February that the

new Power Rangers thing ends up coming out. Yeah,

I enjoyed the episode for what it was. And to

be honest, I was fine with it being a Tommy show.

Yeah. Especially with the Megamorfer. The Megamorfer

was by far the most awesome part. Yeah, the Master

Morpher, that was cool. And I would have loved

to see more of that in action. To be honest Just

because JDF doing that was was so Spectacular

and in his his part in it. Oh, yeah, although

the the returning Rangers It was a little sad

that they kind of got throwaway lines and didn't

get as much impact Yeah But it was still cool

to see them in there Yeah, it was so yeah, I

I enjoyed for what it was and it definitely was

better than that Super Megaforce episode where

he's like, hey guys, and then you get to see

a bunch of the same Rangers that have shown up

before. What was it? Time Force Red and then

Turbo Blue or In Space Blue or whatever. I mean,

I like it when they show up. It was Wes, it was

TJ, Rocky was there. Rocky was the Red Ranger

after Jason, Trini, and Zach went off to wherever

it was, their peacekeeping thing. Which is funny

because in Forever Red you get to see Jason return.

Yep. Even though he didn't technically have the

power anymore. Well, I mean, they don't all like

that. And that was the one cool thing about the

way that Kyle has written Shattered Grid was

that everyone still has some power, like the

Morphing Grid doesn't really go away. So, you

know. Yeah, I kind of agree. But Either way it's

it's kind of Interesting to see where they they

took the episode and one of these days I will

Go back and Watch or not watch read the shattered

grid mm -hmm Yeah I'm telling you right now,

folks, and I'm telling Steve as well, like, it's

not just Shattered Grid, it's the whole series.

It is so good from, like, from everything that

I've read to this point. It's so good. It really,

really is. Yep. So. So. Is there anything that

you would recommend to people as something that

you would revisit if you wanted something, I

don't know, funny and uplifting? I'm trying to

think. I don't know. I've got way too much. God,

I'm trying to be funny and uplifting. Funny and

uplifting. See, like, for me, it would be, uh,

like, Police Academy. In there, but didn't Steve

Gutenberg just say there's gonna be another new

one? He said that a while ago. I just saw that

come up again today that he said it recently

again. I'm gonna Google that. Yeah. Because I

saw that within the, um... the John McLean news

about die -hard six being titled McLean and Supposedly

the film storyline will be both old John and

a younger John as well, so Yeah, I I don't know

if I get behind that whole thing of Looper John

McLean I think they kind of I think that series

is kind of Going by the wayside at this point.

Yeah I know that you know, I mean they said that

he's gonna return for the movie titled McLean,

which is gonna be this sixth film very different

and It's it's dropping the unofficial diehard

year one working title Producers Lorenzo Di Bonaventura

Revealed the official title of the project and

will serve as both prequel and sequel and bringing

back Bruce Willis So basically they're going

to serve a story that takes place in his early

years, the NYPD, with a younger actor in the

role, and then the current time period for the

character. And so it's going to be basically

something that he probably botched way back when.

And then he's having to clean up his own mess

when he's in current time. So they're saying

that it's going to be set in 1979, same as what

they kind of mentioned previously, much like

the Die Hard Year One comic produced by Boom

Studios in 2009, which I was unaware there was

a comic of it, but that's interesting. Yeah,

there's no official word on any of it yet or

which franchise characters will appear because

the recent one in 2013, A Good Day to Die Hard,

only got 300 million worldwide and 67 million

in the US and terrible reviews because it was

basically not a Die Hard movie. Yeah, nope. They

should have done Olympus Has Fallen. Yeah, they

should have. And just called that Die Hard. and

because basically that's what it was um and they

could have done anything with that um the other

film a good day to die hard uh which was just

terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible

terrible terrible um so yeah the the thing about

gutenberg who's around the same age is bruce

willis i believe could be wrong i think bruce

willis is older but um Gutenberg played cadet

Carrie Mahoney in the original one and then became

like detective or something like that and then

he bailed after the fourth film and then they

replaced him with somebody else who was just

not as good in the role and So they did the mission

to Moscow which was the last one that or the

last movie in the franchise Which was in 94,

but he wasn't in those last three But yeah Gutenberg

says the next police Academy is coming no details

yet, but it is in the gift bag being readied

Which they've been saying that for what ten years

now? Probably I mean And then the you know there's

there's not that many people that are left At

this point alive on the cast You have Kim Cattrall

you have Michael Winslow You have GW Bailey Who

is here? He's still alive. Yeah, I was surprised.

He's still alive. He's 74 Wow. Yeah, he's Funny

enough and Michael Winslow obviously still around.

Yeah Just just for fun just for fun here because

we're talking about Police Academy and the fact

that it's got 39 % rotten on Rotten Tomatoes

Which I'm sorry Rotten Tomatoes but I don't care

about you. So we have Gutenberg, we have Cottrell,

we have G .W. Bailey. Boba Smith, I believe,

is dead. Yep. Obviously Commandant Losari is

dead, which is George Gaines. Yep. Tackleberry's

dead. Aww. I'm pretty sure Tackleberry's dead.

That was David Graff. Yeah, he died in 2001 at

the 50 which was kind of unfortunate He was in

all the police Academy movies, which he'll be

missed in the series Leslie Easterbrook Was in

the series though. She's still alive She was

in all of them We have Which which is funny George

Gaines died 2016 at the end of 98. Oh wow They

had Donovan Scott, which I'm not sure he was

in like back to the future 3 and Police Academy

like the original one. They didn't really have

him come back. But yeah, Bubba Smith died in

2011 I was surprised you W Bailey still alive

to be honest Yeah, I got Michael Winslow Who

is the other I'm trying to think of who what

was the female character's name? I Don't remember

off top my head I'm gonna look Yeah, but anyways,

like it's they'd be able to get most of the cast

back. It's just a wondering whether they're gonna

do Sergeant Hooks is Marion Ramsey. I wonder

if she's still alive And they had bolt Bobcat

Gold Thwait in it. God. He was in it from like

the third one on. Yup, I remember that. He was

still alive. She was the one that had the real

soft voice and then when she got mad she would

go like real deep. Yup. Like scream at him. Yeah,

I remember that. Do you know who Art Medtrano

is? No. Anyways, he was in Police Academy 3 and...

to as Sergeant Mouser in the series, which kind

of which kind of replaced G .W. Bailey for those

two films. And then Bailey was back for the remainder

of them. Right. Which was which is funny. But,

yeah, I don't know. I'm kind of I'm kind of hoping

that this happens just because I enjoyed the

original series and I hope that they could kind

of go on that. That root again and see what happens,

but That's that's the other bad thing though

is these old films never they never live up when

they're revived there's Special place in nostalgia

and in the past and then when you try and resurrect

something like that like dumb and dumber or die

hard Like it just it shows its age Yeah It's

not good Yeah, I'm not I'm not in favor of them

Look at when we were kids and compared to now,

okay? When we were kids it took a year and a

half or more for a movie in theaters to make

it to VHS Betamax, whatever Now like Avengers

Infinity War just came out and it only got released

back in May and it's got released last month

or something in August You know, so It's a lot

different now than what it was then because movies

were in theaters longer and you would go two

to three years between, sometimes less than that,

but generally two to three years between sequels.

Look at Back to the Future. First one was released

in 85. Second one, second and third were produced

and released back to back years, 88 and 89. Look

at Beverly Hills Cup one and two. Look at Ghostbusters

one and two. Beverly Hills Cup one was 84. 2

is 87, Ghostbusters 84, Ghostbusters 2 89 maybe,

91. But my point here is that It's kind of like

when a rock band or a musical group or whatever

releases an album Usually it's two to three years

before between albums. It's not 10 20 30 unless

your tool It's not 10 20 30 40 years between

things you can't do these Sequels and prequels

and like prequels are fine. Whatever. That's

what but you can't do like Beverly Hills Cop

is a perfect example. 87 to 94. 94 was way too

late for Beverly Hills Cop 3. That should have

been 90 or 91. I think it did fine. I think if

they go beyond 3, though, for a lot of those

old 80s franchises, I think that's when it starts

to get stale. Yeah. Because even when they revive

a show like Police Academy, they bring it to

a television show. Which they did I? Remember

that yeah wire They had police academy the series

they had Funny thing was is they had Michael

Winslow return they had What's the other person

I just had his name there they had David Graff

tackle Mary yep Although, he was only there for

one episode, whereas Michael Winslow was in it

for multiples. Actually, he was in it for the

entire 26th episode run. And then they had various

other characters from the film franchise, like

Mauser, like Eric, Commandant Lussard, and various

other characters from the film show up from time

to time for an episode. Hightower showed up.

But yeah, I mean, it's... When you're trying

to do that like and they did that with like Save

that by the bell and they you know whatever they

trying to do like revival using like one of the

characters and trying to play fan service with

it and turn it into a TV show like that it usually

turns out terrible instead of just The difference

between like the films of lethal weapon and the

TV series. Yeah show like what they what a successful

What a successful Transcription is from you know

one or one screen to the other and it's yeah,

it's kind of Doing a revival or doing it an entirely

different rendition of it on the other medium.

This is better Yeah, the only one that I think

successfully Did what it was supposed to do and

it isn't even a movie. It's a TV series Boy and

girl meets world girl meets world successfully

brought back the Boy Meets World franchise characters,

but focusing on Obviously the offspring of Cory

and Topanga and that kind of thing and whatever

else creating its own lessons in today's you

know society Yeah, I I'm just I Don't need another

police academy anything at this point like the

first the first You know two or three four movies

are fine The first four movies were actually

really good. It's yeah fourth one. It started

to tank Yeah, when you start going out of your

your home country for the movie, you know, that's

when it starts hitting rock bottom I mean Transformers

did the same thing and well, yeah But you know,

you've hit rock bottom when you're going from

like Police Academy to like other films and TV

series and then you end up going into things

like Lava Lanchula, Sharknado 4, I'm speaking

of Steve Goodenberg and a majority of the, or

Two Lava, Two Lanchula, all sci -fi original

movies. He plays like an army colonel in the

films, Colton West. and Michael Winslow's in

it as his friend Marty, and then Marion Ramsey

who was the quiet female police officer. She

plays Teddy, and then Leslie Easterbrook plays

Doris, and it's funny because those four were

in a lot of the police academy films together,

and then they were in these multiple movies together,

which just makes it hilarious. where you get

like David Hasselhoff in something like, you

know, the Sharknado as well, and then you get

2Lava2Langela, and you get Michael Winslow again

with Steve Guttenberg, which are the only two

from the... Or, no, then you get the other ones

back for that too. So, I mean, it's just, you

know, you've hit rock bottom when that's kind

of the... the way that you have to go for...

You know, you've hit rock bottom in 2004 and

2005 when you have to play Nick. In singles,

Santa seeks Mrs. Claus, and then in 2005, the

sequel to that, Meet the Santas. It was a Hallmark

Channel movie. Wow. Yeah, it wasn't that bad.

I mean, whatever. It's Hallmark Channel. What

are you going to do? But, I mean, when Mahoney

has to play Santa's son... Fall Bats are off.

Exactly. So, yeah, I think this about rounds

it out on the episode of Altered Geek. So what

are some things that you guys, what resonate

with you guys as something you've enjoyed and

still resonate with you now? Whether it be something

like Batman the Animated Series or Beast Wars

or Police Academy or Ace Ventura or any of those

type of shows or Power Rangers or just really

anything. Like what's something that resonates

with you? One thing I want to bring up before

we do get out of here Yes, please answer Steve's

question either in the comments on the site or

Facebook or sending emails or whatever Our good

buddy Pat Shan comic creator to the stars he

and Renzo Rodriguez have a new series coming

out a new graphic novel It's called gangster

ass barista A coffee and crime thriller. A graphic

novel about a former gangster slash current barista

trying to do the right thing, but a life of crime

keeps pulling her back in. Trinity used to live

a life of crime, but now she makes ends meet

by working as a barista in New York City. The

thing is, though, in New York City, well, making

ends meet isn't easy to do with a minimum wage

job, not to mention the fact that customers are

beginning to get on Trinity's nerves, and it's

becoming harder and harder to keep it together.

And now Trinity's past is calling, and she finds

out firsthand that just when she thought she

was out, they pull her back in. This actually

just launched as of this recording. It's only

been on Kickstarter for less than a day, and

it's reached just beyond half of its $7 ,500

goal. I'm super stoked. I'm going to have Pat

on again for the pullback for a new interview

to talk about this. I had him on a second time

to talk about his series, Clonesters. and DestinyNY,

his two other series. This looks really fun.

I can't wait to see this actually happen. Sounds

good. Yup. So until next time, how can people

get a hold of you? It's TF2 and Mike on Twitter.

Alrighty, and so you can get ahold of me on the

Twitter at SCP21 or at AlterGeek. So until next

time, get AlterGeeky with the AlterGeeks.
