About this Episode

Steve explores which television shows he'd want to be part of, discussing his picks like Star Trek: The Next Generation and why, plus his interest in voice acting and behind-the-scenes work. He also covers car maintenance updates, Windows 7 security, smartphone shopping between the Pixel 2, Motorola G6, and Nokia 6.1, sarcastic Twitter commentary, media outlet proofreading failures, and an upcoming Star Trek after-dark event at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit on September 20th.

You're tuned in to Steve Megatron on Altered

Geek. Hello and welcome to Altered Geek. I'm

your host, Steve Megatron Phillips, and in this

episode of the podcast I'm flying solo to cover

the topic of if you could be on one television

show, what would it be past or present? As well

as some things that have been on my mind lately.

So getting right into it, for the if you could

be on one television show, what would it be?

And you can always interact with the show throughout

the week. I'll be dropping little questions and

thoughts for podcast episodes coming up at Altergeek

or at SCP -21, where you can always find me on

there. And so this was one of them amongst other

things that I've been posting lately. But yeah,

so when I made the initial post, I had a few

people respond. Ryan Cox responded and said,

Battlestar Galactica, the 04 series. You know,

I've never actually watched Battlestar Galactica,

which could be considered blasphemy in the geek

and sci -fi world. But I've also never watched

Doctor Who. Either. So, I don't know. I mean,

I see that they have great ratings. I see that

whether it's IMDB or TV .com or Rotten Tomatoes,

again, I don't put much faith in Rotten Tomatoes

just because I've done majority of MWIRE by ignoring

that. And same for the television shows. But...

It's yeah, it's not one of them one of those

series. I would have seen but that's yeah, that's

I could see that being in a Ronald de Moore television

series and who also was involved with Star Trek

and Yeah, so that's that's cool and then Jacob

says Walker Texas Ranger Which is interesting

because you get Chuck Norris. So no matter what

he's gonna win, but it's it's That's an old show

too. It's been, I don't know, when was that on

TV? That had to have been on TV in the 90s at

some point. Yeah, it was it was 93 to 2001. It

doesn't even have a Rotten Tomatoes score listed

when you Google it. TV .com gives it 8 .1 and

IMDB 5 .5. I don't know. I mean, it's kind of

an interesting concept having a martial artist

and Texas Ranger all at the same time. I didn't

watch too much of it, but I did see a few episodes

here or there, and what I saw that was pretty

good for a crime drama that is. For me, I would

have to say, if I was able to, whether it's act

or... be in the background of a television show,

I would have to say it would be Star Trek. Probably

the next generation. Just because I love the

cast, I love the dynamics, I love the ship design.

If I had to be working on or acting on one ship,

it would be the Enterprise -D out of any of the

Trek series. Just because I find it the most

interesting to be on. And I also like the concept.

I love the uniforms, although I love the DS9,

the second half of DS9's uniforms better because

it follows the movie universe. But yeah, for

the television series, I would definitely go

in that route of being on the next generation.

Now, if I had to be on a show where I wasn't

physically on the screen, That would probably

be like a Transformers or Batman the animated

series or Beast Wars or something in that realm

But If it got down to just working on set I would

settle for any of the shows or films that I've

watched just because You would get to meet the

people involved, or you'd get to watch everything

happen and see the movie magic. I've always been

intrigued by that. I've always enjoyed the behind

the scenes. I've always looked at the majority

of radio. Even when I was a kid, I used to listen

to the radio. I used to record myself on a tape

recorder. I used to script out things on paper

and then read them in front of a tape recorder

and pretend that I was doing what I'm doing right

now. except it didn't go into a cassette and

just sit in a player for years on end. I actually

am putting it out on the internet for people

to listen to, so it's a very funny concept there.

If I ever find one of those old cassettes, I'm

thinking about converting it to an mp3 and putting

it in one of the podcasts, but I don't know if

I'll ever find one, which is kind of funny. I

used to do like mock newscasts and make up my

own songs and all this other stuff when I was

a kid, so it's actually kind of funny. I do plan

on having some of that in the show post episode

300. I'm planning some things out that I think

should pan out. which I am going to kind of put

a little poll out there for some of the ideas

later on. So stay tuned to my Twitter at scp21

to get that information. So in addition to the

television series, now if I had to pick a film

to be on, I would have to say Star Trek The Undiscovered

Country. because I would get to be on the Enterprise

A, which is by far my favorite Enterprise. And

the Enterprise A, along with being with the original

cast, would just be the most awesome thing in

the world. Now, I would settle for the new Picard

series. Because I would get to have kind of the

best of both worlds there having the original

TNG Picard Patrick Stewart, hopefully some of

the original cast from TNG DS 9 Voyager And even

maybe some of the the TOS people that are still

alive get to show up to some capacity maybe time

displaced or something But I would I would love

to be involved in something like that or even

like a lot of the animated series Because we

just had a interview with Tom Ruger on Tooncast.

Myself and TFG1 Mike talked to him for over an

hour and it was a lot of fun conversing with

him. Kind of learning the things between the

the various series and honestly like I would

love to work on a show that he's involved with

Just because he seems like a pretty awesome guy

down to earth but very results driven and that's

that's always something that's that's kind of

driven me to is seeing results and seeing things

happen and Getting to Learn things along the

way and and that's kind of what he's done along

with his skills I would love to be a voice actor

still do want to be one but I've come to realize

that that dream may or may not ever happen because

I don't have the funds to sit there and take

these high -end classes or get a demo or nor

do I want to move to LA so it's kind of a one

of those Things that it's it's a pipe dream and

I just I'll have fun with it here and I'll have

fun with it when people need my Voice work and

my impressions and characters, but I don't think

it'll ever go anywhere I'm starting to do it

again at work, which is a lot of fun. I creeped

out one of my co -workers yesterday because I

was communicating with her telling her that you

know we were talking about something Actors or

a film or something and I mentioned I can do

impressions and character impressions, and she's

like what well like what and Just to be annoying

I Did lose a touch of books, and then I did no

stars it from us my Usually I tap into my Diablo

II of Deckard Cain. I called it my old man voice.

My kids find it annoying. I change my voice a

lot at home and they're like, my oldest is constantly

telling me to stop. He's like, okay dad, just

read the book. And I'm like, no, I must do voices

for the characters. So I used to narrate in a...

particular voice, and I'll change characters'

voices. Now, I've gotten them to concede on if

it's a bad person or a villain or something in

the book. I'm allowed to do whatever I want,

or if I'm doing it in an old person, but I used

to do, like, mock kid voices in the middle of

a book, and they just didn't like it very much.

My youngest thinks it's funny, but... My oldest

doesn't so I try not to do it too much. I do

it mostly for my own entertainment Because sometimes

it's hard for me to get through some of these

books after reading them day after day But yeah,

so like again like I would love nothing more

than to be even if it were like on the new like

Animaniacs or a New Transformers series or or

something I would love to be involved to some

degree So yeah, I mean if it ever happens I would

I would be eternally grateful on that aspect

so The other thing I was gonna bring up is I've

been throwing a lot of polls out there lately

particularly on Some aspects of the podcast or

just things I'm just in general wanting to know

like recently Birdman and I did Create a film

which I'm gonna just call create this just as

a kind of a gimmick to kind of lessen the name

because it could kind of go anywhere. So when

we did that in the recent episode, we went through

like five different fake films and I just titled

them accordingly. Like there was, you know, Ernest

Goes Gaming, Becoming Elvis, In Turn of the Dead,

Jackie Chan's Night Out, and there was another

one. And it got a couple of retweets. It got

about seven votes, which... You know, not ideal,

but it's not terrible either, considering it

was kind of out of context anyway. The most votes

went to Ernest Goes Gaming, which I was kind

of in favor of anyway, and Jackie Chan's Night

Out, like, so 71 % was Ernest and 29 % Jackie

Chan, the rest of it was kind of just like, man,

nobody wanted to, zero percent, so. But I still

thought it was kind of funny to kind of post

out there and see what happened. So on another

an air and cabin filter for my car since it still

reeked of antifreeze during that leak that it

had a few weeks back. But yeah, the air filter

smelled like it, but it was still relatively

clean because they'd replaced it at the dealership

when we bought it. However, the cabin filter

likely has never been changed before. uh because

it was it was just black like just filled with

gunk and you know how they're supposed to be

like clean and in white and then like the cavity

that the thing goes in was was clogged as well

like with dead bugs and all kinds of other crap

um so i i had to stick a vacuum in there and

hose it out and and then put the new one in and

i was just the error quality when i replaced

it was so much better my allergies went down

and everything which is great and Tim Silvers

is like I need to replace my my trucks cabin

filter or filter as well I've been meaning to

do this for a while it kind of makes me wonder

because I don't I need to do it to my equinox

that I have as well my my little car it was like

eight bucks for that Tim said that his is like

30 and I think it's gonna cost me about that

for my equinox as well But I need to do it tune

up to it too because it's kind of I want to get

it done before winter It's kind of the bummer

of having a car. But at the same time if you

know how to work on it, it's it's not a bad problem

so Yeah, that was one of the things that kind

of went on this week The other thing that in

in crazy news Microsoft announces that Windows

7 users are going to pay for security until 2023.

Not to mention that this is the same Microsoft

that forces updates and you have to have them

on all machines. I have them on three machines

at my house. One's my laptop, one's my portable

computer that's out at my television, which rarely

gets turned on anymore. We really don't watch

TV very much, if at all, down in our family room.

Uh, it's mostly watched on laptop at this point.

And then my computer, I have Windows 10, but

occasionally, like it tried to do an update like

last week. And when I booted it up and then because

it failed, because I've disabled Windows updates

capability to install, uh, it's failed and then

it reverted and then I was able to clean it up.

Um, but yeah, I just, it was, it's. It's kind

of interesting that they're willing to let Windows

7 users pay for security until 2023 because they're

like, oh, these people aren't switching. Whatever

shall we do? It doesn't surprise me. It just

doesn't at all that despite their aggressive

push to have Windows 10 put on everyone's computer

for a modern desktop appeal that... that they

would charge for this feature to kind of help

you prevent it being, I guess it's gonna make

it costlier, but it's gonna help for the transition

for enterprises upgrading to Windows 10. Yeah,

I don't know. I think this is a crack that they're

doing this, but I guess we'll see. The other

thing I kind of noticed is we've been looking

at cell phones. because my Galaxy S5 is garbage,

as is my wife's, and we constantly have problems

with them. And we're looking at switching from

AT &T to Cricket, because Cricket uses AT &T's

cell towers, and it would save us $20 a month

in unlimited everything, which I'm game for.

However, none of the phones they carry are any

good. I've looked them all up. I've looked up

the ratings like my galaxy s5 is better rated

than anything that they carry and that's the

same with like boost or metro pcs and i've heard

a lot of bad things about metro pcs at least

in my area which is i believe like the sprint

knockoff and boost is like the verizon and they

all they they're owned by the the respective

companies that have their cell towers but Yeah,

I don't know I I'm looking at a budget phone

I'm looking at like some people have suggested

like some forty fifty dollar phones It's not

really the budget. I'm going for I'm going for

like the two three hundred dollar range Because

the eight hundred dollars for a s9 is ridiculous,

and I'm not gonna pay that Same token getting

I want to get a quality phone for a cheap price,

so I've been kind of looking at the Motorola

G6. I'm looking at also the Motorola Pixel 2,

which I'm leaning more towards the Pixel 2 because

it has the double rear camera and everything.

I also like the Nokia 6 .1, which I've never

had a Nokia phone before, so I'm not really sure

how well that works. I've had many, many, many

Samsung and Motorola phones. Last time I had

a Motorola phone, I think it was when the Razr

was out, like the original Razr under Verizon,

and I loved that phone. And the sad thing is

it still goes from between $50 to $100 on eBay

or on Amazon. But yeah, that was the last time

I had one of those. Last time I had an LG, I

had a flip phone. It was my final flip phone

before I went to a smartphone, and my first smartphone

was an HTC. Evo 3G or 4G LTE phone it was total

piece of garbage like the battery wouldn't even

stay charged through the day but it's kind of

much the state of the Galaxy S5 at this point

which was my second smartphone so it's it's an

adventure I'm definitely not an Apple guy as

far as phones like I like the iPod I have to

use a Mac at work on one regard I use a PC for

the other one that's my carry around. But I definitely

am not a fan of the price point of the new Galaxy

phones. Like, I love what's in them, but I don't

want to go that route. And so I'm kind of gearing

it between the Pixel 2 XL, the G6, or the Nokia

6 .1 at the moment, but it's kind of interesting

that we're starting to see phones kind of coming

down a little bit more especially with Samsung

having like the Note and some other things that

are kind of taking that top tier away and So

I might wait till tax time, but which is what

I'm hoping to wait for but that's you're talking

that's six months So I'm hoping I can limp this

phone along until then But yeah, it's It's a

fraction of the cost for some of these, so I'm

hoping that it works out like that. The other

thing, I've been kind of having fun with this

new sarcastic streak on Twitter, which anybody

that follows me will probably have seen this.

I've been just looking at random news articles

or social media posts and then just having like

a... kind of a sarcastic rebuttal to it which

I kind of I'm thinking about turning this into

a segment on the show and I don't know how well

you guys would love this or or not where I would

essentially do like the Saturday Night Live thing

and write like basically a comedy sketch for

it in the vein of reporting the news headline

and then having a sarcastic commentary for it,

so I'm not really sure what you guys think about

that, but that's kind of an idea that's kind

of popped into my head. For instance, Trek Core

posted a Star Trek Generations image from production

designer Herman Zimmerman on the Enterprise -D

stellar cartography set, which, mind you, this

movie came out in 1994. And you get to see the

round room, you get to see like the visual of

space in front of it, and you get to see this

Walkway go out into a circular pattern and I

I looked at it and I'm like I Didn't dawn on

me before like watching this movie, but it says

I said why is Cerebro in Star Trek and I says

hello just kidding but looks similar and I posted

a gif of Mystique walking onto the same type

of platform Although it's slightly altered, it

looks like the same platform for the first X

-Men film, which came out in 1999 or 2000. One

of the two. I'm not specific, but I know it was

that around that time. But I find it funny that

five years, five, six years later, we're getting

a duplicate of it and it looks almost identical,

which I thought was kind of humorous. Amongst

itself anyway The other the other funny thing

is is Detroit News posted Ford teases a new crossover

electric vehicle expected to debut in 2020 and

They show a picture of the rear end of the car

with you know The taillights and everything else

and I put kit with a question mark because it

kind of looks that way There was a actually funny

enough a comedian put on on Twitter. It's at

Erica Rhodes Not sure if anybody's familiar with

her but her stuff's pretty funny she's been on

you know some at midnight or some movies some

television shows but She's pretty funny, anyway.

So anyway, she puts, just woke up scared from

a dream where I was on a date with Gene Wilder.

That's not the scary part, but as he put his

arm around me, a mouse ran out my dress. And

then I couldn't help it when I saw that. I put

dot dot dot, a world of pure imagination, dot

dot dot. And then I put the gif of Gene Wilder

doing that. And that got a couple of funny attention.

from people on that, which is funny. I've been

having fun being sarcastic on social media. It's

just great. And so it kind of gives new life

to social media for me because it's a lot more

interesting to look at than all the depressing

crap that's constantly on there. I used to have

this phrase and it was It's old but I wrote it

on a Yahoo Chat thing back in the I don't know

early 2000s and it was like Talking about something

means you can talk about one thing that has Nothing

to do with anything or something to that degree

And somebody else put something similar and that

was that Erica Rhodes of nothing lasts forever

could also mean that nothing is the only thing

that lasts forever. Everything changes except

nothing. We start with nothing and end with nothing.

Therefore, nothing does indeed last forever.

I just love like sarcastic tweets. They just

interest me so much at this point. Yeah, and

then something that that's kind of a pet peeve

for me is is writing Like when you're reading

an article online I Feel like they should be

Professional, especially if it's from a reputable

news source And I feel terrible About pointing

this out just because I don't want to be that

guy But I read, and I know I say um a lot, which

is just as bad. However, it's not in writing

and it's not from a reputable source of like

a media organization. Not saying that I'm not

reputable in any way, but it's different. So

I mentioned this on Twitter saying after reading

the article on Deadline about the Oscars popular

film category omission being done away with because

they just don't know what to do with it. I noticed

a spelling and quotation error, a pretty profound

one that was there, and I was like, I don't understand

how some news organizations can botch both spelling

and quotations when attempting to report news.

I didn't go to school for journalism, however

I did rather well in my English classes and media

programs, so while I'm technically not qualified

to state this, Please proofread your content

closer before publishing instead of trying to

be first to get out the news And it was funny

because I saw a couple more articles not only

from Deadline, but from other resources shortly

thereafter, which was just kind of pathetic and

This Kevin Wright stuff on on Twitter mentioned

I usually ask my wife to proofread any blog post

a review that I do for both spelling and content

of the piece I can't understand how these big

sites have such low standards, which I totally

agree, and I kind of mentioned that's what I

can't understand either. The smaller establishments

of media put in harder work on being correct

over timely. And I said, you know, I get it that

they have a timeline, but still it makes them

seem less reliable when little things like this

go by the wayside and, you know, things that

make you go, hmm. And Jennifer, I'm sorry if

I'm butchering your last name. I know the award

shows have been going downhill fast, but I figured

this idea would be around for at least a year

or two when I mentioned them copping out on the

popular films. And then she says, I haven't seen

any of the awards shows in years. I can watch

one or two really good movies in the time of

the shows are going and not listen to them drone

about movies that were limited release and never

heard of. So I normally look at the list the

next day to save a lot of time, which is the

same thing I do. I don't watch any of those shows

of self -glorification. I prefer to just watch

other things and it doesn't impact me whatsoever.

It used to really irritate me. And I remember

doing an episode of this show, this very show,

a few years back where I was just like, the Oscars

suck, the awards shows suck, blah, blah, blah,

blah, blah. And I'm now at this point, if it

doesn't matter to me, I just don't cover it.

Because it just makes things that much easier

to deal with. So yeah, been a lot of stuff going

on. I did sign up for, there's this... site called

Podchaser where they're supposed to be able to

take a podcast host and cross -link them on any

episode that they've ever been on, any podcast,

which is essentially kind of like the history

project that Kevin did for the GCRN, although

I have to go back and see what I have to add

to that at this point because I'm pretty sure

that my information is outdated. I'm not even

sure what... milestone I'm at at this point,

because I think I've recorded like 20 -30 episodes

of various shows since then. But anyways, they

had a promotion where you can get a free t -shirt

from another resource, and I can't remember the

name of the company at the moment, but I was

like, I have this old -aged GCRN shirt. the shirt's

still comfortable. I'm actually wearing it while

we record. And the logo is starting to flake

away and it's actually the version 3 .0 logo

from I want to say like 2011. We haven't even

used that logo in years, like it's old. I would

feel bad about wearing this to a convention at

this point because it's so dated, but The other

thing is, is it doesn't say Geekcast Radio Network

on it, and so when we went to Grand Con the year

that we got these, and the following year, people

thought it said Gorn, like from Star Trek, like

the Gorn. And I was like, no, that's a C, not

an O. But it's just the way that it came out.

And so we, when I completely redesigned the logo

a few years later, for the websites. It was a

lot different. And then I've come up with the

most recent design. So I was like, you know,

I don't have a new shirt. And I put the AlterGeek

logo on there and GCRN and ordered it. And it's

actually a very nice quality shirt. The text

on it is very nice quality. It's not the same

type of printing. That zazzle does and and I'm

not sure what they do now, but the the zazzle

shirt is the one I'm wearing That's that's the

old design and it's it's starting to flake and

peel in different spots So eventually like the

logo won't be on it I may intentionally scrape

some of it off so that I just have a plain shirt

or just leave it for a at -home lounging bed

shirt type thing, but yeah, it's it was it's

in dire need of replacement at this point, so

And, yeah, the other thing is I'm not going to

do any more of the boohoo crap on the podcast

because I really don't think anybody cares about

that aspect of my personality or issues. So,

yeah. So anyways, I'm going to be very optimistic,

especially post episode 300. I think episode

300 we're going to have a... original staple

of the podcast coming back for a little bit.

Not sure for how long, but he'll be here. So,

yeah. But yeah, I've got quite a few new ideas

kind of planned, and it's gonna take more planning,

so I may go back to one episode a week, just

depending on timing of things and how much I

can manage to get done, but I'll do that after

episode 300, so. I'm looking forward to it. And

I think before I send this show down the rabbit

hole, there's one bit of news that's left to

kind of cover. And it's, funny enough, it's actually

about Star Trek. I will be, if you're in the

vicinity of... Detroit, Michigan Which I'm not

sure how many people are but they're having at

the Michigan Science Center December on September

20th from 6 to 9 p .m. The the after dark program

which is essentially they They choose a different

like kind of pop culture topic and then they

they close down the museum then they open it

back up for this exclusive like kind of mini

convention So like, August they had Marvel vs.

DC, so September they're doing Star Trek. And

they invited the USS Future Imperfect, our ship,

and the USS Sinclair, which, funny enough, the

commander of Starfleet is the captain of that

vessel. And so... That'll be kind of interesting,

meeting some of the SFI people in person, as

well as having a live podcast and doing Trek

Trivia. So if you're gonna be there, stop in,

come see me, and mention you heard it on the

podcast, and kind of let me know, and we'll see

what happens, and I'll have a recap next week

when... on Future Imperfect. It won't be on this

show just because I'm not going to cover it twice.

It's kind of double -dipping, and I'd rather

just have it on that show. But I may cover it

in brief here of the overall thoughts on the

experience. So until next time, get altered geek

geeky with the Altergeeks.
