DCAU Spotlight Wrap Up

About this Episode
This is static. When Gear and I aren't fighting
bang babies, we like to listen to the Geekcast
Radio Network. is Zeta. I was built as a weapon
to destroy but I will not destroy anymore. And
welcome to episode 99 .5 of Tooncast brought
to you by the GeekCast Radio Network. I am your
host, J .O .J. and Mike, and today I am joined
once again by Nightwing. Hello, sir. Hello. And
Steve Megatron. Hello. Hello. Today we are going
to be racking, wrapping up the DCAU spotlight
because I forgot to do it beforehand. Yeah, I
totally spaced on the ending of Tooncast because
we had... Nine episode 97 through 99 recorded
within one week. I recorded episode 97 which
was static shock with Steve and Tara and then
Lupus convoy and I recorded the Justice League
episodes 98 99 we recorded those in one night
and At the end of that. I was like, okay, that's
it. We got two months off. We're cool. And I
was like, oh You know because I forgot to do
a DC at you wrap up. So that's what we're here
to do today So night wing what's been going on
with you, sir? Nothing much at all. Hmm. That
was quick. Steve? Nothing much at all. I don't
even know what I'm telling you, fuckers. Don't
need to make me make that comment. No, what I
said was I couldn't even take a bite of my sandwich,
you fuckers, because I figured you guys would
have something to say while I took a bite of
my sandwich. Sorry. Yay. The illusion of podcasting.
Yes, really. So basically what this recap is
going to be is kind of like what the Disney Spotlight
was, the Disney Spotlight recap where we have
a bunch of lists and a bunch of different stuff
that we're going to go through. Some of us have
more than others because I didn't really clarify.
On the script here for 99 .5, I basically had
to go to the Tooncast 100 script and that's...
I had to modify it. I didn't modify it all that
well. So... I'm floundering here. Fuck. Um...
Yeah, so... Jesus, fish. Shut up. I'm floundering.
We'll be back in a moment. Happy? Call me when
it's important. and not before. So this first
list, we're going to be doing our list of how
we would rank the shows in the DC animated universe
from what we think is like art, like the ones
that we're least interested in to the ones we
most like. So it's kind of like from worst to
best. We're not saying that these shows are bad
in general, but it's kind of like a top 10 list.
But seeing as how Teen Titans is not in continuity
and some of the other shows actually run together
Most of us have like eight shows on our list
So I'm going to start with the Zeta project This
one and static are both stretches Zeta is a spin
-off of Batman Beyond Whereas Batman Beyond was
super dark. This was like super bright the animation
sucked on it. The voice acting was great I liked
I really liked the theme after hearing it again
because I hadn't heard it in a few years, but
This I would have to say is my worst DCIU show
because it just it's too bright It's too convoluted.
Oh man with the colors on this show. They could
have picked some better colors Zeta equals epic
fail Boring Essentially, yes, so what's your
what's your first or your worst or whatever and
It's also Zeta because it's boring. That's about
it. Nothing more to say Steve Agree, okay lovely
my number seven is static shock agree well I
wouldn't say that it's a worse show. Static Shock
is a very good show, actually. And, you know,
much as Zeta was just supposed to be a spinoff
of Batman Beyond, Static wasn't even really in
continuity until they added those Justice League
and the new Batman Adventure episodes for it,
the crossover episodes. Because static has a
completely different feel than any of the other
DCAU shows But I do like it for its social commentary
for the hard -hitting it I mean you didn't see
a cartoon back then like this that was hitting
these hard issues So that's that's my next one
what about you Aaron? Mine is also static Get
out of my head people It'll ship pretty soon.
I'm pretty sure but no Honestly, I think Static,
it is a great show. It's not at the level of
the other shows, but it's still great. It's great
in its uniqueness, I think. It's nothing like
the rest of them, but it's great in its own way.
I think it's cool to have a young teenage hero
who's not... Partnered with Batman constantly
and you know, he's really just a street level
kid who happens to get powers and that's about
it You know, it's not this epic. Oh my gosh,
it's amazing thing. It's just yeah, it's a really
personal show I think that's what's great about
it. So yeah, I think it's great Yeah, and the
other thing is we got to talk to static and gear
both. Yay. Yeah Steve what's your next one? Static
It's not that it's a bad show. It's just because
I ranked the other ones higher, right? My next
one is the new Batman Adventures, which is also
the new Batman Superman Adventures These are
the revamp episodes technically Batman the animated
series and did in 1995 They revamped it and came
back as the new Batman Adventures in 1997 I really
love the theme for new Batman Superman adventures.
It was awesome. It was just such a great theme
marrying the two, the BTAS theme and the STAS
theme together. I know some people didn't like
the redesign of the Joker, Steve, but I did like
- I like the redesign of half the damn villains.
Well, I liked it on Scarecrow because he was
a hell of a lot scarier. I didn't like it on
any of them. Some of them were pretty good. Other
ones are not. I don't like the Joker. Scarecrow
is awesome. A few of them are kind of like, eh.
Freeze is a little better. Joker looks like crap.
Riggler looks like crap. Catwoman looks like
crap. I like Catwoman in this version. It could
have been stylized better. It looks more like
a Genny Tarkovsky. That's true, that's true.
She's a bit too skinny. So what's your next one,
Aaron? My next one is Justice League. Not JLU,
just Justice League. The first two seasons, right?
Yes. Mostly because even though season two has
some great, amazing episodes, that's the one.
Season one is really not that great in hindsight.
There's not much character development in it,
period. There's a couple of great episodes in
season one that's about it. It's kind of just,
it's not bad, it's just there. And then season
two has some great episodes, but even then it's
like, I don't know, it's a little stiff for me.
I think JLU is where it really started to get,
it started to break out. The animation got completely
solidified as total awesomeness. This is not
saying this is bad by any means, it's just, You
know, it's not as good as the other five on the
list, the other above five. So yeah, I do still
love this season two specifically, but yeah,
overall it ranks out of six. Steve, what's your
next one? My next one I'd have to say is Superman.
Yeah. Because I like the other shows much better.
It's probably just because Superman's never really
been one of those characters I really, I don't
know, 100 % care for. Therefore, I'd rank him
around there. I mean, the show was good, but
that wasn't one of my favorite out of the remaining.
Right. Yeah. This show actually made me because
Superman is my next one as well going into you
know moving on here, but Superman the animated
series was kind of Between that and Lois and
Clark is what kind of reintroduced me to Superman
like I had seen all the movies as a kid and well
I'd seen one in two Later after they'd gotten
released obviously, but you know I'd say you
know I was a kid when three and four came out
and I'd seen that and After the after four came
out. I was like okay. Well. I'm waiting for a
superman 5 which never happened I almost wish
a superman 5 what I happen. It would have been
anything better than that stupid Bryan Singer
movie Poor Bryan singer. Anyway, but superman
the animated series and Lois and Clark the TV
series is what reintroduced me to Superman and
Tim Daly is the voice of Superman was just awesome
Dana Delaney as Lois Amazing amazing amazing
voice acting. There are a lot of Superman episodes
that are Kind of bordering on just What the fuck
moments But yeah, I think you know Having it
where I have it. It's it's pretty good. What
about you Aaron? What's your next one? My next
one is Batman Beyond It's not that That's the
thing. It's like I hate putting these shows lower
on the list, but it's just it's like they're
not bad They're all good except for Zeta. I guess
but you know anyway Yeah, I think I love this
show But at the same time a lot of the episodes
that there's only really a few of them that are
really Amazing or really really great the rest
of them are at best good None of them are well
like I said there's a few that are that are excellent
some are good And then the rest are So, overall,
just in terms of sheer quantity of mediocrity,
it has to get the number five spot out of eight.
So, yeah, I do love it. I love Terry McGinnis.
I love the university it created. It's so original.
It's definitely probably the most original section
of the DCAU, but still, it's not incredible.
It's just really, really good. So Steve, what's
your next one on your list? Justice League and
that's because I have two others that Go beyond
Justice League and unlimited. Mm -hmm. So that's
pretty much why Hmm my number four ish type one
actually is Batman Beyond you can kind of tell
at this point people where where our lists are
probably gonna end up going especially mine but
Batman Beyond I really loved the concept I was
like when I first saw it back in the day I was
kind of pissed I was like wait why is Bruce Wayne
old what the hell is this type of thing but for
what it is it's great and It gave us probably
one of the best animated features ever in Return
of the Joker, and I'm sure Steve will talk about
that a little bit later. But, I mean, that was
just one of the crowning jewels of the series,
I think. And the voice acting was great. I mean,
I prefer after they filmed and released Return
of the Joker when they had Angie Harmon come
back to do Barbara. Stockard Channing as Barbara
just didn't really do it for me. But just overall
the voice acting on it was great and just the
range that Kevin Conroy put into put into Bruce
was just amazing So Aaron, what's your next one
on your list there? It is the new Batman adventures
also known as part of the new Batman Superman
adventures Yeah, that was the first series first
Batman series that I watched regularly as a kid.
I love the sort of super sleek designs. I loved
the way that it was like a more modern version
of BTAS. Not that that made it better, but it
was definitely cooler in some ways. And it was
cool that you had four different heroes all working
together, you know, Batman, Robin, Nightwing,
and Batgirl. I liked Nightwing, of course. You
know, I loved a lot of the cool different ways
they reinvented certain concepts like Mr. Freeze
and Scarecrow. The fact that it crossed over
with Superman was awesome. You got to have Superman
come into Gotham City and team up with Robin
to fight Brainiac. It was a lot of fun. So I
think that one, that's my number four. I love
that. I love the nighttime episode. That was
so awesome. The fight with Bane was amazing.
Oh my god, yes, yes. My next one is BTAS. Wait,
you skipped Steve. Oh, did we? Oh, shit. This
episode is cursed. Steve, what's your number
for? This part has been edited. Ha ha ha. You'll
never know what was actually here. The next one
on my list is Batman the Animated Series. The
first three years or four years or however long
it was, 92 to 95, so the first five years of
it, I guess. I don't know. Math is evil and can
die. The first like three seasons of Batman the
animated series really well done stories Even
though there was no actual continuity between
them I like that for that show because they're
like many movies and it's like a self -contained
story each time thank God we had gone away from
the way of doing the The oh, what do we learn
in this episode kids because that would so not
have worked with Batman So, what's your next
one, Aaron? My third one is JLU. Not that it's
not good enough to also be at the top, but for
me personally, I feel like it was a lot of fun.
Best animation by far, definitely. Best fight
choreography. It's got a ton of things going
for it. Biggest cast, most epic story. but the
thing that makes it not as great for me is just
the fact that they didn't really give enough
time in my opinion to um the personal lives of
the heroes you know it was almost always they
were always in the suits doing their hero thing
and that was it They had some character development
here and there, but overall it wasn't quite enough
for me. I liked the other solo shows like Superman
and Batman and Batman Beyond, Static Shock, all
those, because you got to see the heroes in a
much more personal light. And I liked that more.
So, JLU, it's still amazing, it's wonderful,
but it's my third. Steve? My number three is
JLU. just because, I don't know, there were a
lot of good episodes, but I have to that MI much
higher than any of the other DCAU shows. Therefore,
that's why that place is where it did. Yes. My
number two is Justice League. Justice League,
the first two seasons... First of all, the first
two seasons, the first season itself, even though
it made Superman look like a wimp, the first
two seasons had really, really great cliffhangers
at the end of them. Season one, you had the Savage
Time three -parter. In season two, of course,
you had Star -Crossed three -parter. And those
stories alone make it my number two, just because
it was such a great, great story. for those two
multi -part episodes. The voice acting, you know,
I said before that Tim Daly was really great
as Superman. I didn't even know that it wasn't
Tim Daly in Justice League at first. I didn't
know it was George Newburn. I thought it was
Daly, but... Because I didn't I never saw the
difference I never saw that I never saw the change
because the voicing I thought was so similar
to each other, but even though now I know that
it's different, but It wasn't like Wasn't like
where you have Tim Daly voicing Superman in something
And then you go to friggin Kyle McLaughlin, you
know So that's that's my number two ish I guess
Aaron was your next one my number two is Superman
Yeah, this was I Love this show so much I get
people have problems with it certain episodes
people don't like as much Personally, they don't
bother me. There's no episode in Superman where
I sit there and I'm like, no, I don't want to
watch this I mean, I don't know why I guess cuz
I grew up with it when I was seven years old.
I first watched the show and I was like, this
is amazing. I want to watch more. And, you know,
yeah, just like you, you know, Lois and Clark
in this show, they sort of defined my Superman
fandom. They didn't revive it. They pretty much
brought it into existence because I wasn't alive
before 1989. So this whole post -crisis reboot
Superman stuff with those two shows, that was
incredibly important to me and my fandom. So
yeah, I love Superman. I love the characters
of Superman. Lois, Lex, Darkseid was introduced
in this show. That whole apocalypse storyline
throughout the whole show was amazing. And then
it led into Justice League, which was great.
So yeah, I love Superman. I think it's great.
Also, it had the world's finest crossover with
Batman. And that was like, oh, yes. And technically,
all the crossovers are part of Superman. I kind
of think of them as both, but Superman is technically
the one that contained all the crossover stories.
So it's like, it's got Superman and Batman in
the same show. So yeah, it's number two for me.
Steve? Number two for me would be Batman Beyond.
And that's just because it's an equal of Batman
animated series, which was epically awesome,
but Batman Beyond. uh... huh very interesting
my uh... my number one is jail you uh... again
like erin said before you know what some of their
best animation just the fact of the story of
the the the the the the cadmium story arc the
twist with Luthor you know just the and then
you know you know going to that that 30 -minute
style instead of two -parters instead you know
just telling 30 -minute adventure granted though
that the Cadmus arc was like an eight -part arc
but and just I mean destroyer tell us so screw
Lexofer But just destroyer at the end and and
just having dark side back and You know just
all that that you know jail you was great. There
are a few episodes in jail you I really don't
care for But other than that it was just great
so Aaron. What's your number one? My number one
is Batman and it's kind of ironic because I didn't
actually watch this show much when it was actually
airing originally, but I don't know in hindsight.
I think it was I think it's the most artistic
of all the shows I think it's the most are dedicated
to that kind of short form Artistry and you know
you look at every single frame of the animation.
It's hand -drawn. It's not done with all the
cg coloring that happened later uh... very visually
it's very stylistically different uh... you know
and it is at the standard and i think today i
think in my opinion it holds up a little bit
as far as the stories go uh... animation not
as much Well, I think not as much, but I think
in terms of overall, the story itself, I think
it holds up the best. I think it's the most mature
probably out of all of them. Not the most mature
in content, but as far as the actual stories,
as far as the seriousness, the tone, I think
it's the most well -rounded and the most impressive
for me anyway. So, not to diminish the others,
the others are just as valid, but for me, I think
Batman is the definitive DCAU cartoon. Yes. Steve,
what's your number one like we don't already
know? Batman the animated series for all the
same reasons and Including the fact that it's
got the most epic Batman and Joker voices ever
as well as all the other cast Hell yes, and the
writing is awesome. Plus you have a guest appearance
twice by the original Batman from the 60s Yep,
Adam West So the next list that we're going to
do is our top five best DCAU moments and I think
we're not gonna just I think we're just gonna
list these we're not gonna discuss them so much
just because I Think they just need to be listed
For my number five is the cliffhanger in the
Justice League season or series opener secret
origins Where I think it was? part two going
into part three where batman supposedly dies
because he gets um... the end of that episode
wonder woman gets cut off from him and the next
thing you see is a bunch of gunshots from the
aliens and we are led to believe that batman's
dead that was just jaw -dropping what's your
number five nightwing uh... my number five moment
in the dcau is Uh, at the end of Return of the
Joker, when Terry kind of truly becomes Batman,
it's after he's defeated the Joker and, uh, you
know, Bruce and Tim Drake kind of acknowledge
him and say, yeah, you, you are the, you know,
the one true Batman from here on out. And then
he puts on the cow and he flies off into the
night and it's like, yes, Terry finally is Batman.
He's not Batman's sidekick. He's not Robin of
the future. He's the, he's the Batman of the
future. So yeah, that's mine. Just don't call
me Robin. Okay, Alfred. Who's Alfred? Steve what's
your number five best DCA moment? The Arguing
scene between the original Batman and the Joker
in the After they've brainwashed him Robin in
the flashback part of return of the Joker Where
Joker is taunting Batman and calling him a little
boy in a play suit crying for mommy and daddy
Yeah My number four is Probably one of the only
times I can ever really stand this actor But
it's anything to do with mixie mixy is piddling
and gilbert godfried voicing mixy uh that was
just such a great playoff between tim daly superman
and gilbert godfried as mixy as piddling um i
absolutely love that uh it was so so funny uh
what about you aaron what's your number four
my number four is uh Bruce first becoming Batman
and the Phantasm. Yeah, when he pulls on that
cowl in the Batcave and even Alfred is scared
out of his mind, you know, and it's just like,
whoa, okay, he is Batman and establishes the
fact that, you know, the whole movie builds it,
but it's the idea that Batman is not just a mask
he puts on, it's this crazy dark wraith persona.
And yeah, that did that so well, so that was
really powerful. So that's my number four, yeah.
What about you, Stu? What's your number four?
The pilot episode of Batman Beyond, the part
where Bruce realizes he's old because he has
to pick up a gun because of his heart attack.
Yep. Yeah, that was such an epic epic moment
and then what made it more epic is right after
that the scene where he's like Never again It's
very very cool. My number three is has to do
with the Twilight episode from Justice League
I'm not gonna stop until you're just a greasy
smear on my fist You stole one of mine. Come
on, dude. Everybody knows the greasy smear line.
Okay, fine. Whatever. Mine is a different part
of that fight. We'll get to that later. I know
which part it is, too. So what's your number
three, Aaron? My number three is Krypton's final
moments when Jor -El and Leia are putting Kelle
in the ship and sending him off. It's that entire
episode, honestly, but that it all came to a
head right there at the end. And it's where they
realize, no, everything they fought for the entire
episode is lost. And they just have to send their
baby away. And the music is all swelling. Bruce
Timm himself says that he can't hear the music
without shedding a tear every single time. and
just, you know, and Krypton explodes and you,
you know, your heart breaks for the L family
because you're like, oh man, you know, you get
to know them over the entire episode then bam,
they're just dead. And the primary character
changes to be Kal -El and it's like, oh, whoa,
this is totally different. So yeah, I think that
is the only story I've ever seen that made me
care for Superman's Kryptonian family. And because
of that, I care for them in every single version
after that. So yeah, I think that's my favorite
or my number three. Steve what's your number
three the part in once in future thing part two
where Terry Batman Bruce Batman and Bruce old
Bruce meet up and have a little smart ass conversation
Good choice I would have to put that in this
episode somewhere. I love that My number two
is and this is weird for me i don't know why
i picked this but um... the scene in flash and
substance with uh... flash talking to trickster
and getting him you know to go back to getting
on his mat i just thought it just goes to show
you that uh... Even though World's Finest podcast
was wrong in their incontinuity belief, Michael
Simms is right in his love of Flash's character
in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited
because it just goes to show you how much of
a different hero Flash is compared to a Batman,
Orion, Superman, something like that. And I just
thought it was a really touching scene between
Flash and Trickster, especially having Mark Hamill
as the Trickster again. That was awesome. So
Aaron, what's your number two? Mine is Superman
defeating Darkseid in Twilight and my favorite
part of that whole thing is when Darkseid smashes
Superman's face under his foot and he's like
that's where you belong under my heel and then
Superman He burns two holes through Darkseid's
foot with his heat vision, and then punches him
in the face and beats him down, and it's like,
yes! After all the battles, all the times, you
know, Brainiac, or, not Brainiac, sorry, Darkseid
beat down Superman, brainwashed him, you know,
beat up his planet, Superman's like, no more,
I'm gonna kick you to the floor, and he did,
and it was amazing. Everyone cheered. That's
not exactly what I thought you were gonna say
for your favorite moment for that one because
I thought you were gonna go with where at the
end of it after Superman and Batman leave and
Darkseid looks up with you know, the cracks on
his face and he goes Loser See, I don't like
that cuz I don't like how Darkseid always has
to get in the last word It's like dude, you're
going to die You know, you're the loser dude.
You lost that one It's like I I honestly think
that after the camera leaves Darkseid after he
loses every time and he's you know He his smile
fades away. He's like Superman beat me again
For my number one, I'm gonna narrow it down,
but what I originally wrote down was anything
that comes out of Batman's mouth. Just seriously,
especially in Justice League. In Justice League
Unlimited, but I'm gonna narrow it down to actually
Terry Batt. Just the way that Terry handled the
Joker. in return of the joker just the way because
because he he asks bruce he says any suggestions
and bruce you know tells him bruce's style power
on through don't listen to him power on through
and you'll and you'll beat him and that was bruce's
style when he was younger but terry is not bruce
well yes he is bruce's son spoiler but you know
it's one of those things where terry handles
things differently and Bruce tells him Joker
likes Joker's vein, he likes to talk. And Terry's
like, oh, well, I like to talk too. And you see
this 15, 16 year old kid taunting the fucking
Joker. I thought that was so, so cool. So Aaron,
what's your number one, sir? My number one is
the final scene of the late Mr. Kent, where there's
this murderer who you know he's about to be uh
he's in the gas chamber about to die he's trying
to figure out how clark kent figured out you
know he how he solved the case and evaded death
and all this stuff at the last minute he looks
up he realizes he's superman and then he dies
it's like whoa i mean that was insane for a kids
show to show that just to show a guy literally
seconds away from death It's like, oh, man. And
that is my favorite ending of any DCAU show ever,
right there. Yeah. What about you, Steve? What's
your number one? I have to agree with you, honestly.
Oh, really? Yes. That's how you bet. Yes, I love
that scene because he just pisses the Joker off
royally. He's like, you're not Batman. Yeah.
So the next list we're gonna do, and I need to
mention this now before I forget about it, we
understand that there are so many moments to
choose from, but if we chose anything more than
top five moments for each of us, this episode
would be super long. We understand there are
way more best moments, but... Yeah, I agree with
I agree with all of you guys's too. I mean, yeah
Yeah, even your your top one with the bit and
beyond fights thing that that I agree with that
totally But you know, I just made an arbitrary
Oh, no, no, and that's fine. But what I'm saying
is is that? Even though each of us only listed
five we we recognize that within the DCA you
there are tons more great moments like one of
my favorite ones is Green green arrow humming
his own theme song You know what I'm saying is
is that for the listeners don't just judge us
on What our lists are here? We have to keep them
to top five top tens because like I said if it
was anything more than that This episode would
be at least two hours long and we don't all have
that much time to put into this So the next you
you say that about the theme song Well Batman
did it when somebody was trying to read his mind
and get into his thoughts and his theme song
was playing Oh yeah, in, uh, uh, what the hell
is the name of that stupid episode? Oh, that
one, uh, the Night of Shadows? No, Night of Shadows
is Morgan Le Fay. Yeah, what's the thing called?
Ah, shit. It's the one with Dr. Destiny with
John Dee, uh, not Dreams and Dardens, that's
a BTIS episode. Yeah, I was thinking that too.
It's the one with the dreaming thing where he
yeah, yeah Farah Jacques a song. Yeah So the
next one we're gonna get to is best DCA you fights
and the way that I wrote my list down was like
someone versus someone My number five is Batman
versus Rachel ghoul in anything all not just
a specific fight, but just their entire history
within the DCAU Was just very psychological And
really that's what it was it was a battle of
psychological wits more so than actual physically
fighting I mean, I think I think there was only
like one or two times that they physically fought
right? Nightwing? I believe so. I think so, yeah
But just I mean Kevin Conroy going up against
the MCP. Oh, I'm sorry David Warner as as race
Was just just great. Hopefully someone will get
my MCP joke Ron. Yeah, I got it. I got it. I
got it So that's my number five what's your number
five Aaron? Anyway We haven't oh, sorry. It's
all right. My mic was off number five is Terry
versus curare any of their fights either of them
The one in the museum most of all, but yeah,
I think yeah, those were incredible It was like
Batman versus samurai Jack as a girl It's kind
of what it was. So yeah, there we go Yeah, I
think the best part about I think it was the
first fight today I think the best part about
that is when she ended up putting her sword between
his legs That just that one shot of her almost
just clipping him like that where she came down
on him Steve what is your number five don't laugh
when I say this but it has to do with ink and
That's where she tried to drown Terry by deep
-throating him and then And then Bruce comes
in with his his battle armor that's underneath
his trench coat and then she tried to do the
same to him and he's like watch out and then
the armor comes out and Pounds her ass to the
ground Yeah, I gotta say just as a little side
here every reincarnation or different design
of the Batman suit is awesome There isn't a redesign
of the Batman suit or a futuristic design of
the Batman suit within the DCA you that I did
not like That's Batman is the shit and he knows
how to design stuff as Joker said in wild card.
Oh, yeah You know what? I really wanted to hear
throughout the DCA UI. We never heard it. I wanted
to hear Mark Hamill say Why does he get all those
wonderful toys? Sorry My number four is Superman
versus dark side all rounds because every time
these two fought it was knocked down drag out
into the world battles Specifically the destroyer
battle I love that battle just because Superman
is just ready to just let it all Oh God, I can't
believe I almost said that he's just ready to
let it all go You know, and it was just amazing,
I thought. But yeah, any time those two fought,
you knew it was world -ending epic battles. Aaron,
what about you? What's your number four? My number
four is Batman versus the LexCorp robot in World's
Finest. Their endless battle where he's in the
jetpack, then he's running through Metropolis,
then he's in the Daily Planet, then he shoves
it into a newspaper printing machine, then it's
not dead, he has to fight again, and yeah, I
love that one, so, yeah. Copybat, copybat. Steve,
what's your number for any battle that Batman
gets in with the Joker? because, let's face it,
the Joker is the yin to Batman's yang. Yeah.
My number three actually will probably throw
you guys for a loop. It's another psychological
battle, really. Luther versus Amazo. I am a throne
for a loop. Sarcasm, ladies and gentlemen. no
but seriously when like when a mezzo comes back
he's like cuz when he left he's like oh you people
can't offer me anything else and he comes back
as he wants answers from luther and then they
have that that you're in the palm of my hand
discussion you know and uh... i i just thought
it was really really great to have that kind
of back and forth and of course you know likes
just can't but help but getting in the last war
and then and Adams like you should have quit
while you're ahead uh... what about you Aaron
what's your number three my number three is Terry
Brish's The Joker and Return of the Joker for
all the reasons you guys already listed Austin
Cackling I love the fight choreography I like
the the fact that it's much more focused on the
martial arts and it's uh... It seems very real,
the fact that the Joker is able to use Tim Drake's
skill as a martial artist, and the Joker's own
skill, just from fighting Batman for all those
years. So yeah, I love that. I love that it's
both physical and psychological. I love the fact
that Terry takes him down with the Joy Buzzer.
Then he fries the smiley face shaped microchip.
Ace is involved at the beginning, that's cool.
I mean yeah, it's a great great fight What about
you Steve? What's your number three? I have to
agree for all the same reasons Yeah, and my number
two is that exact fight what I will say about
that fight is is that it It's one of those things
where It was never ever done in Batman the Animated
Series with the Joker, because it was always
psychological between Bruce and Joker. It wasn't
physical. And you never really saw... I mean,
yes, they got into fistfights, but you never
saw Joker and Batman jumping up and down, jumping
around, flying high kicks and bicycle kicks and
all this and all that. And the animation on the
Terry Bad Joker fight was just... so much, not
really more awesome than the other BTAS fights,
but it was so much better because you actually
saw the Joker doing stuff. He's not just running
from Batman. So, what's your number two, Aaron?
Superman versus Darkseid and Twilight, for the
reasons I already said. That's about it. Steve,
what about you? Harddeck Batman versus the real
Batman. Oh, I didn't think of that. And that
has to do with the fact that... Batman's playing
with the Bruce Wayne Batman part of the personality
of the hard -deck Batman right yeah making him
think he killed himself yeah again it's a lot
of these Batman battles are psychological more
than actual physicals I mean yes there is physical
stuff but I mean a lot of it's psychological
you got anything else to say about it Steve nope
my number one is I don't think it's the best
fight of the entire DCAU, but just from my list
and from what I was able to come up with, my
number one is GL vs. Roe Talik. Simply because
of just the way that that battle was done, the
fact that in the middle of it Shaira comes in
and tries to stop Roe, and he basically physically
abuses her basically electrocutes her and all
that it was just it was one of those emotional
battles one of those battles that had a lot of
great lines like I didn't take anything maybe
you should take better care of your stuff or
kiss my axe or you know I know I just I just
love that it was one of those fights where it
was pure physical fight. It wasn't psychological.
It wasn't this, that, and the other thing. It
was just knock down, drag out, kick ass. What
about you, Aaron? What's your number one? My
number one is Batman versus his inner demons
all the time. Just constantly fighting himself.
A perfect example of that would be A Better World.
There's that yes, there's also in a BTS. There's
a perchance to dream where he fights Batman who
turns out to be the Mad Hatter because as he
separated into two There's also the thing we're
at with a scarecrow where he has to fight that
giant like Skull monster who's like telling him
he's not good enough And he that's when he pulls
out his awesome. I am vengeance line for the
first time. Yeah, and So yeah, I think that fight
Because, yeah, all of Batman's villains should
be psychological. Not that they can't be physical,
too, but all of his greatest villains are all
psychological. And so I think, yeah, I mean,
you know, Mad Hatter and Scarecrow, those two
challenged him directly with his own psychology.
So, yeah, I think in that way, even though it's
kind of... Indirect fashion. I think Batman was
almost his own worst enemy at times And I think
those were the most interesting battles in my
opinion of the entire DCA you know What about
you Steve? What's your number one? I have to
say the battle of Batman and GL Against the time
guy and once a future thing Where they're going
back in time to the beginning of time. Yep. Where
they finally defeat them and then they end up
sitting back in their lounge. I just thought
that was kind of cool how that ended up. Yeah,
that was so, so cool. All right, so we're going
to take a quick break here. So up next is our
top five favorite characters or just our top
five characters from the DCAU. My number five
is Darkseid. He is pure evil and what really
really sets him up for me is Michael Ironside
doing the voice for him. No one else in existence
should be voicing Darkseid other than Michael
Ironside. There's always that joke in the Transformers
fandom of, oh, well, we'll just put Peter Cullen
on ice and have him do Optimus Prime forever.
We need to put Michael Ironside on ice and have
him do Darkseid forever. No, no, no. Just if
he dies, reanimate his corpse, he'll sound even
better. Nightwing, what's your number five? My
number five is Lois Dana Delaney is incredible.
She's so funny She makes you care about Lois
and like her so much even though she's saying
horribly mean things sometimes She's you're just
laughing at her and you know, she's not like,
you know a mean person. It's just It's so so
hard not to like you can't not like Lois. Yeah.
Yeah, I can't not close. It's just Anyway, she's
incredible. So yeah, I think she is the definitive
Lois Lane as far as I'm concerned Yeah. And I
agree with you there. She just is. Steve, what
about you for number five? The Riddler. I like
the entire outfit that he has in the beginning
of BTAS. I like how he's always thinking he's
one step ahead of Batman. And what really sealed
the deal for me with this character is what is
reality? Where they're in the video game. Oh,
yeah, yeah, yeah. mind screwing everybody yeah
I've just loved this character ever since and
actually I like this one a lot more before I
like the Joker and whereas the Joker is more
so my favorite now that was my favorite back
then yeah um it's really funny the Riddler in
BTIS was voiced by the future Lionel Luther John
Glover did the Riddler yeah that is so bizarre
I know, right? John Glover is a crazy versatile
actor, though. Oh, yeah, he is. What's your...
Okay, number four. Duh. My number four is Brainiac.
Brainiac is just... Like, I don't... Of course,
Nightwing, you'll have to correct this because
you read more comics than I do. They changed
Brainiac for DCIU, didn't they? Oh, yes, very
much so. So, what was he originally? Originally,
he was a, um, this green -skinned alien from
the planet Colu. He was a Coluan, and, um...
I think he still had the little symbols on his
head, but the idea was that he had a computer
-like brain and he would just went around different
planets collecting cities and bottling them.
So before Krypton exploded, he went to their
capital city of Kandor, scooped it up out of
the earth, just kidnapped millions of people,
shrunk them down to a tiny size, put them in
a little bottle container and just left with
them. And Superman was later able to defeat Brainiac
and get Kandor back, hence the whole bottled
city of Kandor, thinking he keeps in the fortress
of solitude. But yeah, so in the original version,
he was not Krypton's AI. So they changed him
in the animated series to be more like, essentially,
Krypton's master control program. Which was a
lot cooler and every single version of Brainiac
since then has at least Referenced that like
they made Brainiac more like that in the comics.
He's still a Kalu in but he's more computer like
And in smallville they once again said he is
an AI from Krypton. So that's that was pretty
cool So yeah, this version is by far. I think
the best Brainiac of all time. Yeah, I really
like this version compared to just from what
you said about the original version because Mean
this is really what sets up I mean, you know
we've I've said before in other shows and on
this show on this podcast that Technically Superman
the animated series is what starts the continuity
and I know that Bruce Tim and all them didn't
like plan Like they weren't planning at Superman
the animated series to start the rest of the
continuity They tied it all back to specifically
ghost in the machine is Where it ties back to?
So, technically, Brainiac is the creator of the
continuity. Also, the way they changed Brainiac,
too, is that they made him a personal villain
for Super Mangus beforehand. Brainiac, he's powerful.
He's a main Superman villain. He's not a personal
guy like he's never did anything terrible to
Superman or anyone but in the animated series
They made it to where he was responsible for
the genocide of the entire Kryptonian race, right?
He kept it on the planet and forced them to die,
right? So that made him a much more personal
and much more meaningful villain so yeah, and
they adopted that into the comics too where they
They didn't change his him to being like the
animated series but they made it to where the
whole candor bottle city thing was a much more
personal thing because they had uh super girls
family in candor so he was essentially this mass
kidnapper and uh i guess torturer so you know
anyway so that's pretty cool what's your number
four sir erin mine uh my number four is terry
mcginnis I love Terry McGinnis. He's the character
that logically should be terrible. You know,
the teenage sidekick, the Batman. You know, he's
not Robin, so he has to be terrible, right? No!
Turns out he's actually awesome. He's a tough
kid. He's a really smart kid. He's an extremely
well -developed character. He's compelling. From
the first two -part episode, you already think
he's awesome and you want to see more of his
story. So yeah, I think he's the best original
character they made for the entire DCAU, in my
opinion. What's your number four, Steve? I would
have to say that I like the first Robin. that
shows up. I like the Dick Grayson Robin. Even
when he goes into the Nightwing persona, I like
him just because he challenges Batman a little
bit when he thinks that Batman's wrong, but he's
more or less Batman's equal even though Batman
doesn't see him that way. Right, yeah. My number
three is Hog Girl. I don't know what it is. I
just have a thing for the way that Maria Canales
Barrera voiced her. I have a thing for just the
way that she and John, their whole relationship
blossomed from Wild Cards forward and just the
whole time travel thing and all that stuff. I
just really liked her. I liked how... We started
seeing tidbits of her past like in in Twilight
and stuff But we didn't really see too many hints
and then later on as season two progressed in
Justice League We saw more and more obviously
building up to star -crossed, but I know I just
I've always liked hot girl So she would be my
number three. What about you Aaron? What's your
number three? My number three is Superman Which
version? Oh the animated series no, no, no, which
which voice version daily or new burn. Yeah daily.
Okay new burn I Thought he got really really
good in the second season of Justice League and
in JLU. Mm -hmm, but I think daily had see I
always kind of felt like New Bern had to act
like Daly whereas Daly was just being himself
and he felt a lot more comfortable and natural
in the role And I felt like he seemed very genuine
I really liked how they made Superman Well, you
know it they were adapting the post -crisis reboot
version by John Byrne where they made him a basically
he's not this demigod, like the Christopher Reeve
version was, he was basically just a guy, a really
good guy who happened to have superpowers. So
he was much more of a human version of the character,
more relatable. And yeah, he was sort of the
guy that I always wanted to be as a kid. So yeah,
he's my number three. I want to watch you, Steve.
I would have to say that I like I would have
to say Lex Luthor Just because he's the ultimate
badass. That's a dick with money and He's just
a thorn in everybody's side whether it be Bruce
and World's finest or constantly Superman or
just anybody that gets in his way And the voicing
form is epic Yeah, Clancy Brown was awesome.
I've never heard a better Lex Luthor voice, in
my opinion. Yeah. My number two is Green Arrow.
When Green Arrow showed up in JLU, I was like,
oh, hell yeah. The way they had Ollie portrayed
in JLU was just so awesome. I mean, I think that
is his main way of portraying him, right, Nightwing?
As far as, oh, I'm an old lefty and blah, blah,
blah, blah. I believe in the little, you know,
helping the little guy, that kind of thing. Yeah,
he's more comedic. In Justice League, a lot more
likable. He comes off kind of like a dick in
the comics sometimes. Okay. Just because he's...
But there isn't so much of a difference between
the comics and the cartoon, right? no there is
not it's very very similar I love the way just
the way Ken Schreiner I think it's Schreiner
or Shriver I think it's Schreiner Ken Schreiner
had voiced him I just love the voice for him
and just you know like you said just the comedic
bits that he does is just I just love him so
much that's so cool what about you what's your
number two my number two is Nightwing no one
expected that Yeah. No, I love the fact that
he is the young kid, the sidekick, who then grows
up and becomes his own superhero. He is currently
in all of superhero dumb whatever. He is the
definitive idea of the character who started
out as a kid and then grew up into his own man,
into his own hero. He transcended the sidekick
role. He created his own identity, which was
very clearly Sure, inspired by Batman, but he
is his own man. We don't see enough of him in
the DCAU, but still what we see of him is pretty
awesome. I love the fact that he's Batman, but
he's not as much of a jerk as Batman. His costume
is amazing too. I love his super simplistic black
suit with the blue bird symbol. It's pretty great.
I love also how he's like the big brother for
Tim Drake. That's a lot of fun. Yeah, I love
the Old Wounds episode. That was so cool. Yeah,
I loved that. As a kid, I was like, oh my gosh,
it's the origin of Nightwing. I was freaking
out. And yeah, anyway, so that's my number two.
Steve, what about you? What's your number two?
I would have to say the Joker, just because he's
the ultimate badass. The ultimate villain of
the the the Batman animated series the ultimate
villain that pretty much anybody's head to face
Whether I mean unless it's like Darkseid or you
know or somebody but he's the ultimate regular
Just your everyday villain like I don't know
He just kicks major ass. Yep My number one surprise
surprise Kevin Conroy as Batman. Just... No one
before Kevin Conroy got the role of Batman ever
really changed the voice between Bruce and Batman.
You look at 1989 Batman. It's just Michael Keaton
just voicing the character. He doesn't really
change his inflection. And of course, being in,
you know, a 600 -pound rubber suit, who could
really change your voice inflection? However,
however much that stupid rubber suit weighed.
But like, we knew distinctly when Batman the
Animated Series started, and it kind of took
a few episodes to kind of get into it, but we
knew distinctly who the Bruce went, like he set
it, Conroy set it up like it was two separate
characters. And I really, really like that, and
just as I said before, anything that comes out
of his mouth in Justice League is just comedy
gold. Nightwing, what's your number one? My number
one is Adam West as Batman. No, I'm kidding.
No, it is definitely. I totally agree. Kevin
Conroy is Batman. He is the best developed, most
well -rounded, and just the deepest character
of the entire DCAU. Even though I'm a bit more
of a Superman fan, I will totally admit that
in this universe, Batman is the more well -rounded
character. In the finale of JLU, where they show
all the heroes running down the steps towards
the screen, Batman's right in the center, and
it's like, yeah, that's where he deserves to
be, right there. So absolutely, number one. Steve?
Just to take a step back and go back to the Joker,
I'd have to say that Mark Hamill is the ultimate
Joker, though. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, totally, definitely.
To this to my number one I would have to agree
100 % Conrad is the most kick -ass Batman ever
Yep So the next list that we're gonna get into
is top five disappointments. I really struggled
with this one. I really did So my number five
was like Jill, you had a lot of Green Arrow,
but I don't think they had enough. So my number
five was not enough Green Arrow stories. Just
because, like I said before, I love the way that
Ken Schreiner voiced him and I just love the
way that Green Arrow's character came across
in Justice League Unlimited. What about you,
Aaron? What's your number five disappointment?
My number five is not enough Batgirl in BTAS,
just because I think... They kind of introduced
her in a two -parter in btas and then she came
back once. Yeah, it's like well, you know Why
didn't they bring her back more? I mean, of course,
she was a regular in TNBA Yeah, but it's like
but in btas she she had so much potential there,
you know Why didn't they do that? So that's mine
The only thing I would say to that is I prefer
the voice change from btas to TNBA I prefer Tara
Strong's Batgirl versus oh, yeah I forget who
did the original voice off the top of my head.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. Your decision
there. Steve, what's your number five disappointment?
Mine would be, and I had to write all these down
because I can't keep it track, they didn't bridge
the gap between Justice League Unlimited and
beyond about the war. Right near apocalypse and
you know and all those things I mean where the
hell is that story? Where the hell did you know
Bruce get old? Where did he create? You know
his in -between suit of JL you to the the beyond
suit I mean, I know there was at least one more
suit between there now and the comics written
by Those guys did show him wearing a kind of
you know magnetic Electrical suit type thing
yeah between, but I would have loved to have
seen that in an animation. I've always said that
the way the DCAU timeline goes for me from Justice
League to Batman Beyond is you have Destroyer
being the end of Justice League. The entire because
I don't view like I know it's separate But I've
never viewed Justice League and Justice League
unlimited as two separate entities I've viewed
them as a five season series of television so
I've always stated that I want a cartoon series
that takes place from destroyer the events that
happen after that up until you get to rebirth
i know it'll never happen but i wish it would
of back then before and i know you know batman
beyond came first in in production and then they
went back into justice family did justice league
later but i wanna bruised him style tv series
that has events after destroyer leading up to
them and beyond rebirth to par because that way
we could we could get those stories animation
what happened There is a problem with that if
only because I charted it out once I figured
out the entire DCA you timeline just in Just
from references in dialogue. I remember this
Yeah, just good like when Bruce says he's 80
or you know when Terry well someone says he's
he's 80 in and beyond then you go back in time
and you figure out Okay, this happened here in
here in here. The problem is the timeline makes
no sense. It's completely wrong because They
say that Batman Beyond is 50 years in the future
when it's only 40 at most if you actually count
it out. So it's like the timeline does not because
they very clearly were not focusing on the actual
universe when they were crafting the story. They
told the stories and the universe came after
that. So there is a problem there. Also, that
would be a really depressing series. Like, you
see Bruce getting older and Barbara leaves him,
and she goes and marries some other dude, and
Michael is gone. What I'm saying is that it's
character development, though. That's true, that's
true. It's super -defined character development.
And I'm not saying that we would see... I'm saying
that you would see... Really, honestly, the intro
to... You know the 20 years before like when
rebirth starts it says 20 years in the future
You know 20 years later. I forget what it says.
It's so like the very beginning of it when Bruce
has That well, there's there's nothing in the
beginning of that, but then it says 20 years
later right after that right What I'm saying
is like we could see him up to that point, but
he wouldn't be It's not like he'd be super old
because he gets older during beyond so i'm saying
is if you take from destroyer to the like the
first five minutes a rebirth you know we wouldn't
see we would see bruce age in that cartoon series
but we it's not like he's gonna go from being
mid thirties early forties or whatever to being
eighty immediately we're gonna see him progressively
age but you know up until he had that health
issue in that episode he was chicken ass it's
true it's true interesting What now, Steve? Taking
more names than you could. My number four disappointment
is what is easily the worst episode of Justice
League ever. War World. That's all that has to
be said. I'm not discussing it at all, but that's
my number four disappointment is War World. Oh
my god. Moving on. Yes. Nightwing, what's your
number four? My number four disappointment is
that there was no really good return of Ra's
al Ghul. I mean, it's like he came back, sort
of, in Batman Beyond. We don't go into that again.
That was a pretty good return, I would say, for
him. Yes, but what I mean is that he didn't come
back in the new Batman Adventures, and he kind
of came back in Superman, but... It was a weird
episode, you know, and they referenced him once
in, uh, nighttime. Um, but it's like for such
a huge character that has such a, uh, a big impact
on my thinking of the Batman mythos. I mean,
it would have been great for him to fight the
justice league, maybe, you know, um, do something
like that would work though. I'm sorry to cut
you off there. I don't think that would work
because race is purely psychological. And a lot
of the well like you couldn't have race versus
flash. I mean racial that you could You could
because he has the entire League of Shadows or
assassins but in which version you're talking
about He has an entire army of the best -trained
assassins and warriors on the planet. So They
don't show them that much in BTAS, but he has
an entire army that he's waiting to conquer the
entire world with. If the Joker can make a bunch
of bombs and send the Justice League going crazy
trying to defuse bombs in Las Vegas, I think
Reiche could start a mini war in, what was it
called? The country that everyone is always -
Yeah, Casnia. He could just like, he could take
over Casnia. He and Fatal Savage could have like
a team up or something, that'd be funny. Wow,
that would be crazy. Steve, what's your number
four? No other villains from BTAS show up in
Batman Beyond besides Bane, the Joker, Raish,
and Mr. Freeze. Well, that's the that like I
could see if you made the argument for Justice
League and jail you because of the bad embargo
But at that point in beyond they were they didn't
want to just recycle The BTIS villains they wanted
they did Well, no, I'm not saying that they didn't
but what I'm saying is like they didn't want
to recycle every single villain You don't have
to face beyond you don't have poison ivy beyond
you know what I mean? You have Scarecrow Beyond.
Well... It would have been nice to have had,
to have found out what happened to them. Yeah,
some closure. That's all I was really looking
for. Yeah. Yeah, I think we got some good stuff
with that with Mr. Freeze and with Bane. And
I guess with Race too. And the Joker. That's
true. But, you know, hey, what happened to the
Riddler? What happened to Catwoman? I mean, she's
reference. What happened to her? Well, we know
what happened to the Riddler. He was stuck in
the computer. No, actually it wasn't Yeah, cuz
he was out later That's right back in one of
the new adventures episodes, but that's right
I know they have a scene in Arkham Asylum in
return to the Joker where they show poison ivy's
tomb Joker hanging from the ceiling and then
they have poison ivy's tomb and you know the
riddler and some of the other guys, but It's
just it never actually showed anything Yeah Mm
-hmm of his rogues gallery, you know My number
three is and I know Bruce Tim has said that you
know, he didn't want to do this because Didn't
want GL looking like a heel and all that but
we really get no resolution For GL and hot girl
during jail jail you I mean Yes, we know he stole
my number three I wrote the exact same sentence.
No resolution to the John Shayer relationship
I mean yes I know that obviously they're going
to you know hook up in the future obviously if
Warhawk's around but I mean it just I don't know
this is one of the reasons why I wish Justice
League would have somehow continued I think if
they had waited to do but see the problem with
JLU continuing is in season five they had a strict
timeline they were following because When legions
when legion of doom started the the initiation
episode the seat the season 5 opener And then
you go to like shadow of the hawk and then later
down the line you get to ancient history you
see a defined timeline of each like six months
or three months or whatever and you get to Alive
and destroyer and that's pretty much it. But
yeah, no that we needed more closure on that
Yeah, that's the one big huge open thread that's
never resolved and it's kind of like How did
how did Warhawk get made was was it a one -night
stand did they get married? I mean, how did it
happen? That's these are important things Yeah,
that's that's one of my theories. Yeah, that
that that's very possible. He doesn't have Green
Lantern powers though Well, he wouldn't I have
green wings of destiny. Shara was one cranky
pregnant lady. Yeah. What I want to know is how
the hell Static knows that. That's what I want
to know. Well, I guess maybe - Static was there.
Yeah, I figure, you know, once Shara was pregnant,
for some reason Static's there and John's like
yelling at him like, you help her! And Static's
like, I don't know what's going on! And they
just freak out. Yeah, I'll be your baby daddy.
It'd be funny if Stedic just lied and they were
just screwing with John the whole time. Like
he's not actually, Mora doesn't actually share
his son. That'd be funny. See the thing of it
is though is... He resembles him though and he's
got the warlike tendencies that... That and if
you guys... What was that stupid episode? The
Metamorphosis in Justice League The character
of Rex Mason Didn't GL say something about one
of these days I'm gonna name my kid after you
or something to Mason and then lo and behold
in once and future thing we have Rex Stewart
That's an alternate timeline. I hate when people
bring that crap up. I know it's an alternate
timeline, but still, it's still cool. Steve,
what's your number three? The Joker died. I pose
this to you, which death are you more disappointed
with, Tim shooting him or him electrocuting himself?
See, I see the electrocution as a ultimatum final
destruction. I can see that as a more fitting
death because it's killed by his own gags. But,
and I mean, granted he was killed by his own
gags by Tim, but I think that was kind of a puss
way out. To put it lightly Just because Joker
getting shot in the chest. He's falling off fucking
buildings for God's sakes and not died Yeah,
I think the whole shooting in the chest thing
it works better as a character moment for Tim
not yeah the Joker Yeah, joke was kind of lame
and if you go with the electrocution That's still
not that great because I mean he got locked in
his own freaking mind once he's fallen off buildings
He's gotten battered blown up and yet. He's still
there the next episode Yeah My number two Aaron
will actually love this now I know that during
jail and daily you there was the bad embargo
on the is it it was it the entire Bat family
characters outside of Batman or was it just the
villains that had the bad embargo Wait, wait,
hang on. Hang on. Are you what to say? Not enough
Nightwing What I was gonna say was not enough
Robin slash Nightwing voiced by Lauren that's
my number two what the heck You guys are doing
a mind reading session before I know you guys
had a gypsy But yeah, I mean I like like I love
Matthew Valencia doing Tim Drake and Tim Drake
was a completely different character I'm glad
that they got a younger person to do Tim Drake
in in new Batman adventures But like Lauren Lester
voicing Robin and then later Nightwing that is
easily the best Robin ever. I mean, outside of
like Casey Kasem and um, Chris O'Donnell. Yeah,
I think yeah, I mean my number two is not enough
Nightwing period and I meant like in the entire
DCA you not just Justice League But I mean like
even in new bit and adventures even in Batman
Beyond I mean he was referenced twice into and
beyond he never showed up well by the time well
wait a second here by the time you get to Beyond
there was There was Drake and Nightwing there
was I mean there was the there was both of them.
So When they were talking about the Robin in
Batman Beyond, they could have been talking about
Tim Drake and not Dick Grayson. Oh, no, but they
mentioned Grayson. No, no, no. I know that they
do, but what I'm saying is when you're specifically
talking about the character of Robin in general...
Okay, Neil, you talk about that. That works.
Right. What I'm saying is, like, when you're
talking about the character of Robin in Batman
Beyond in general, it could mean either Dick
or Tim. Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm. But continue. Well,
no. Yeah, I mean my number two is not enough
Nightwing period just because he showed up for
like three or four episodes in TNBA and and that
that was that he was great in those but I kind
of felt like he was a character that There's
actually a lot of mystery around him. Yeah I
mean we knew he went off and did some training
like Bruce did he learned some like Brazilian
martial arts But he just kind of showed up with
this mysterious guy and he's gone and it's like,
okay, that's cool but We don't really know anything
about him and then they reference him again mysteriously
in and up and beyond and then you know Barbara
groan's like look up Nightwing someday as he
got stories and it's like please do I want to
see him and it's like Come on I want to see elderly
Nightwing beating people up and training Nightwing
Beyond. Oh my god Or you like a Nightwing mech
that he drives around and he fly there was a
Nightwing plane. It's a flying mech That'll be
awesome. Anyway, although he did show up for
like half a second in Justice League in the background.
That was cool Yeah, what was it the funeral scene
for Superman in here after well actually I think
Dick Grayson might have appeared there, but no
it was in a grudge match Nightwing actually appears
in silhouette. Oh, that's right beginning of
that. Yeah, that's right Yeah, Steve, what's
your number two most disappointing moment? The
there's no filler between Batman Beyond and epilogue
That's true. Mm -hmm. I would have loved nothing
more than And silence that's because you cut
out so you're gonna have to do your I would love
nothing more than again bacon I love nothing
more than bacon. Bacon is good. I would love
nothing more than to see a filler type thing,
finding out what happened between Batman Beyond
and Epilogue. Because it's epically awesome.
I mean, we did get that JLU flashback. Wrong.
No, I know but what I'm saying is that you know
that that still goes to my thing of You know
the same thing between destroyer and Batman Beyond
but yeah, I see what you're saying there My number
one most disappointing thing in the entire DCA
you is the Zeta project I just don't epic fail.
I really like Oswald from Drew Carey, Dedrick
Bader voicing Zeta. I'd rather have him voicing
Zeta than voicing Batman in Brave and the Bold.
Oh my god, don't get me started. Don't know.
He is awesome in that show. Seriously? No. Yes.
No. As that crazy silly version of Batman, he's
awesome. He's amazing. Anyways. But, you know,
pretty much for all the same reasons I mentioned
before in this episode about Zeta, the colors
were too bright. You know, this, that, and the
other thing, everything else. But yeah, it just
wasn't a real good shining moment for the DCAU,
I didn't think. So Aaron, what's your number
one? My number one is related to my number two.
It's basically just, there's not enough, there
are not enough bad characters in Justice League.
You know, it's like there's Batman and Joker
and that's it. There's the embargo, but I don't
care. Even in the first two seasons of Justice
League, there weren't enough bat characters.
I feel like Batman was the main character of
the DCAU for several years on straight. He had
two or three cartoons dedicated to him or Terry,
basically. You know, I felt like he needed more
attention, and the fact that he was just kind
of there for most of the show, and he didn't
really see... I mean, he got to go visit The
Flash's hometown and see what's up with him.
You went to Metropolis a couple times. You got
to see the personal lives of Hot Girl and Green
Lantern every now and then. No Batman. Even when
the Joker shows up, it's just him and Batman
talking and that's about it. There's no personal
stuff going on there. You rarely ever see Bruce
out of the mask. There's no Tim Drake, no Nightwing,
no Batgirl. That's disappointing to me. No villains
other than the Joker. It's not like it's unacceptable
to me. I think it's really disappointing. Steve,
what's your number one most disappointing moment?
Besides Zeta? Yeah. That they just didn't continue
it. They had a good thing going. I mean, I know
why they usually switch it up, but I mean, I
just think that they had a good thing going on
there, that it was kind of, I don't know, bad
to switch gears. But again, they don't stay with
anything forever. True, true. And you have to
move on and grow and all that and good stuff.
So who cares about growing Fuck that shit. So
the next list we're going to do is our Top 10
male female voice actors that are kind of you
know, male and female are spirited out throughout
the list I might as well stick to formula. My
number 10 is Phil Lamar not just for Green Lantern,
but for static for Steel. I know he did a couple
other side character voices throughout DCAU,
but just Phil has such great range. What about
you, Nightwing? What's your number 10? Mine are
in no particular order, unfortunately. Somewhere
around number 10 would be Corey Burton as Brainiac.
I think he was pretty amazing. So yeah, go with
that one. Steve? Mark Hamill, the Joker. Okay.
My next one would be, you know, Cory Burton as
Brandy Neck. Just really, really great voicing
on Cory's part. It's funny because Cory voiced
two of... The best robots and two different of
my fandoms he voices shockwave and transformers
and he voices brain. I can in DCA you Nightwing
what's your next one? My next one is gonna be
Michael Dorn is Calaback It's my it's Michael
Dorn man, yeah, and he's playing Calaback I love
how he plays Calaback is like kind of an idiot,
but a warrior idiot But anyway, yeah, him saying
uncle in Justice League is hilarious. Say it!
Say it! Uncle! Steve, what's your next one? My
next one would be David Warner as Ra's Al Ghul.
Just because, I don't know, the voice on anything
he does is epic, but he's just kick -ass. Yeah.
My next one is Jennifer Hale. Just anything that
she does, she just brings her all to it. Even
though Giganta's origins are kind of creepy,
the human version of Giganta was just really,
really great. And in comparison to that, she
also voiced Killer Frost and just the comparison
between those two different characters and just
the way that she differentiated the voices for
them. I thought was really, really great. What
about you, Nightwing? What's your next one? Uh,
Gilbert Gottfried. Uh, Mr. McSie Spitlick. McSie?
Yeah. Yeah. Gil Tipsy's in. Yeah. That's funny.
So, yes, yes, that's definitely in there. Steve,
what's your next one? Um, my next one would be...
Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor. My next one would
be Powers Booth as Red Tornado. I wanted to put
Red Tornado out there, but more specifically
Gorilla Grodd, just the way Powers voiced him.
I don't really care for the character of Grodd,
but yeah, no one really knew until, like I didn't
know until I heard Bruce Tim say something about
it on one of the commentaries. That they, you
really can't tell that it's Powers Booth doing
the voice of Red Tornado because of the effects
that are put on that voice, but it is him doing
it. What about you Aaron, what's your next one?
Mine's Clancy Brown is like Slyther Just you
know for reasons everyone knows yeah Steve Kevin
Conroy as the goddamn Batman Yeah, that's enough
said right there I mean really yeah um my next
one like everybody else Clancy Really for Again,
I know I've been referencing this episode a lot
here in the in the wrap -up but simply for the
end of destroyer Sorry, I'm late. I had to go
get my power suit What about you nightwing what's
your next one I'm gonna go with Tara strong as
a bad girl Hmm very interesting Well, I mean,
okay Batgirl slash Raven, but you know Not the
same. Yeah and continuity. We know Yes, I I really
liked her as Batgirl a lot. I don't know why
it's just yeah, I got like like You know how
sometimes you'll watch a show and you'll hear
a voice actor or voice actress do a role and
then they'll switch it up and you'll like the
second one better. That's kind of what happened
to me with BTIS. Like, I'm okay with the... Again,
I haven't looked it up during this episode, but
I'm okay with the voice actors that did the first
part of Batgirl in BTIS, but I liked it a heck
of a lot better when it was Tara doing it. Steve,
what's your next one? Will Friedel as Terry McGinnis.
Or Terry Wayne, but yeah Whatever. No, I know
I know technically it is McGinnis. I know it
is McGinnis, but Still surprised he wouldn't
change his name eventually over the years, but
that'd be kind of weird. I know it wasn't it
Yeah, but well was did a really really good job
with with Terry My next one is Maria Canales
Barrera as Hot Girl. Again, just, I really love
the character of Hot Girl and I love the way,
just the way that her voice lent itself to Hot
Girl. What about you, Maria? I don't want your
next one. Will Friedle. Period. Steve? I've run
out. You've run out. Okay. My next one is Dana
Delaney. She is the definitive Lois Lane ever.
Definitive animated Lois Lane. I would say that
for me, the definitive live action Lois would
probably be, I know I'm probably going to get
blasphemy for this, but Terry Hager from Lois
and Clark. Shut up. She scares me. Why is she?
That's a discussion for another day. Moving on.
What's your next one? Uh, mine is Michael Ironside
as Darkseid. Stop stealing my stuff. I guess
we can just talk about that together then. We've
kind of already mentioned it. Michael Ironside
as Darkseid is just awesome. Yep, yep, perfect.
Recently, actually, a friend of mine, he and
I, we watched Superman -Batman Apocalypse together.
He hadn't seen... the DCAU before, so he had
never seen Darkseid before. So I had to explain
the entire Jack Kirby's fourth world universe
to him, like, oh, OK, this is Darkseid. These
are all the different characters. And then I
was like, OK, his voice, don't imagine that.
I'm going to show you the real voice later. So
after we finished watching it, I showed him the
fight between Superman, Darkseid, and Twilight.
And he was like, oh, yeah, that's a better voice.
And I was like, yes, it is. That's all we need
to know. My next one is actually a tie, and I
can do this because I said that I never noticed
the voice change at the time, but I notice it
now. Tim Daley and George Newburn. Tim Daley
will always be the ultimate animated Superman,
but George Newburn still, with the way that the
character of Superman turned, just the way that
he was portrayed in Justice League, they kept
the continuity from STAS. With but George still
put the emotion in just as Tim would as far as
from like what it like like Darkseid and granny
goodness and all that like all that history George
really did nail it and I I like them both as
the animated Superman's Well, what's your Aaron
what's your I guess this technically would be
well, what's your next one? The thing is that
the number third one at standalone II So we've
watched about her, she's amazing. Alright, move
on. This is actually my number one, but Steve
said it best, the goddamn Batman. I mean, Kevin
Conroy. You don't get any better than Kevin Conroy
when it comes to, I mean, Bruce Greenwood did
a really good job in Red Hood, Under the Red
Hood, but I mean, other versions of animation
of Batman, Like after DCAU, like up until now.
Haven't really liked them. Any of them. Especially
Oswald. Anyway, sorry. I think the worst one
probably so far has been Reno Romano as Bruce
and the Batman. No, I would disagree with that.
I would say the worst one was Jeremy Sisto in
New Frontier. Oh, see, I like him. I like him
as an actor. I prefer seeing him on Law and Order
rather than voicing Batman. Okay, see, I like
to use his Batman. But no, okay, my second place,
technically, since this is... I actually put
up the full ten. My second place is Mark Hamill
as the Joker. And as the trickster. joker and
trickster i love how they actually drew him like
he was the trickster um as he played him in the
live action flash tv show right so they actually
drew mark hamill that was pretty funny yeah um
you have any other thoughts steve before we move
on nope now we're gonna get into the five best
and one worst theme songs of the entire dcau
um I'm just going to read through my list. We'll
discuss them, but I just want to get through
the list and not kind of rotate because it's
just... My number five is the Batman Beyond theme.
Four is Superman the Animated Series. Three is
the BTAS main title that Danny Elfman did. Number
two is the new Batman Superman Adventures and
number one is JLU. For me, Batman Beyond was
great. superman the animated series was great
the btas main is awesome but i really really
love as i said before the marriage between btas
and stas theme for the new batman superman adventures
it just it was so epic and everybody loved the
original justice league theme but i really latched
on to the jlu theme it has it's more of a rock
tempo it's more of It's more epic to me than
the original Justice League theme and I just
absolutely love those So Nightwing, what are
your five? All right in order from worst to best
It goes JL you Superman Batman Superman Batman
the animated series the alternate title the second
one that one with the Shirley Walker original
theme not the Danny Elfman, right? Yeah, and
then Batman Beyond is my favorite So yeah, I
mean I agree that JLU theme is a lot more fun
I do I loved the Justice League opening titles
when they were first airing but then after a
while I got really bored with them. Yeah, I get
it. They're the Justice League. Let's move on
Yeah, when I was um when I was doing the secret
origins podcast and I was watching Justice League
episodes on the DVDs I would just I would watch
the opening scene. I would hear like two seconds
of the theme and fast forward Through the opening
titles In contrast, I would watch every single
bit and beyond opening title. I'm like, yeah
So yeah, and I gotta say I love the Batman animated
theme so much the original version I that's my
favorite maybe my favorite superhero theme of
all time actually Yeah, so yeah, I love that.
So anyway What about you, Steve? What's your
top five list? My favorite theme songs would
be, in no particular order, well, I lie. My number
five would be JLU, followed by Superman the Animated
Series, followed by New Adventures, followed
by Beyond and then Batman the Animated Series.
Yeah. Because you just can't beat the Batman
themes. Yeah, and I get that and that's great
and everything else but one of the main things
that I really love about the JLU theme and why
I put it at number one was because of like the
last 20 seconds of that one minute theme. The
best way I can describe it is when you're watching
the title sequence and it has a green arrow coming
at you with his arrow and then it fades to the
big three and all the superheroes flying behind
their heads and you have this, and then it goes,
oh, you know, that kind of like godlike thing
and I just, I absolutely love that. And the one
that I really don't like as far as like a worst
song out of the shows, in the dcau the static
themes were just okay they weren't really my
style um i didn't really i don't know just didn't
really hit with me i guess um the next category
we're going to go to is two favorite shows from
the dcau spotlight that we cover here on tune
cast and two least favorite shows from the dcau
spotlight that we covered here on Tunecast. My
two favorites are JLJLU, because as I said before,
I consider them one series, and Batman the Animated
Series, the entire run, which includes new adventures.
Nightwing, what about you? My two favorites would
be... Oh wow, we got Brainiac on the line with
us. Yeah, your microphone's acting weird. You
sound like a robot. That's weird. Yeah, it's
like really staticky Braniac took over Don I
hate him so nightwing what are your two favorite
shows from the spotlight here on to cast that
we covered for DCA you? Superman and Batman Cool.
And then my least favorite are... No, we're not
there yet. Oh, fine. Steve, what are your two
favorites? Steve, what are your two favorites?
And yeah, yeah, what are your two favorites from
the ones we covered? Oh god, this episode's gonna
be so... Batman the Animated Series and Batman
Beyond. Somehow I didn't not expect that, but
yeah. Highest. My two least favorite shows from
the DCAU spotlight here on Tooncast Zeta and
The show that didn't actually get covered the
show that the show that shall not be named But
Zeta is really the only one I had an issue with
And then of course Teen Titans, which is not
in continuity uh... and what about you and he's
actually least favorite is they don't static
no reason other than they're just have to be
the lowest ranked right now uh... steve what
are your least favorites uh... my least favorites
i'd put zeta and zeta No Zeta and Teen Titans,
which is not in continuity. Yes. Oh 14 Titans.
It's a great show bastards Hey Robin's not a
bastard. He's an orphan. It's different it makes
no sense It makes dollars Wow, all right, so
next we're gonna talk about the DVD releases
Mainly, this is just gonna be me going on at
length. One of the things I've noticed about
the individual releases, stuff like they put
out the Batman Superman movie, which is basically
the world's finest three -parter re -edited to
make it feel like a more movie thing. They basically
took out the opening and closing title sequence.
and they added end credit sequence with music
for that. I really liked that one and I thought
that was a really good release because it has
features on it with Bruce Timm like showing you
how to draw Batman. It has him telling you about
the first meeting of the villains between Lights
and Joker. It has him telling you how they went
about doing the meeting of the villains and then
the meeting of the heroes. And I really like
that one. The other really great one was Star
-Crossed, which was, again, a re -edited version
of the three -part Justice League episode. One
of the reasons why I would say that this is probably
the best individual release is that it had its
own introduction, basically a repurposed Justice
League theme. At the beginning of it with its
own title sequence and at the end it had a like
a really sad It starts out with the sad Green
Lantern hot girl love theme and then it goes
into like a sadder like a really really emotional
version of the Justice League outro the other
thing about this DVD set is it has What a feature
Hawkman from comics to cartoon basically it's
a feature with Bruce Tim and and and and all
those people Telling you why pro -talic is what
they used because obviously they wouldn't let
you know DC wouldn't let them use Carter Hall
Or k -tar hall and and and ruin the image of
Hawkman himself but Yeah, that would be the two
really really good ones I can't speak for any
of the other individual ones because I don't
really have them I would say that the individual
one for Batman Beyond the first five Episodes
the Batman Beyond the movie as they title it
really doesn't have a lot to it so but the other
ones that For me, I'm a completist when it comes
to these things, so Batman the Animated Series
is the complete series. Yes, I know it's just
a transfer from the volume sets, but still having
it in one big thing is awesome. The same thing
with Superman and Justice League, just having
those in one big set is just really, really awesome.
I wish that they would put out the static DVDs.
I know it's probably not going to happen, but
I wish that they would eventually. It'll happen
eventually, I'm sure. Or at least digitally,
they'll come out. I wish. Nightwing, you got
any thoughts on the DVD stuff? Only that the
stupid Superman animated DVDs are dual -sided
discs to save money and those are terrible and
I hate them. Yes. Also, one major gripe I have
is that the packaging for almost all the sets
is really cheap cardboard, and I take really
good care of my DVD box sets. Like, I don't toss
them around or do anything with them, but, I
mean... Honestly within like a couple months
of me owning them the edges were already starting
to turn white from just wear from just From taking
them off and on the shelf. Yeah, they're they're
not durable by any means whatsoever Yeah, the
individual seasons slash, you know individual
discs. Yeah, they're not that great. I will say
that the Batman complete animated series box
Is very durable I find I mean obviously you're
not gonna be doing a lot with it But it's a lot
better quality I would say they kind of failed
though when they went to do the Batman Beyond
complete series because it's the same style box
as BTAS But it's that same like you were saying
a second ago It's it's that not really that great
a cardboard like the BTAS set the complete series
set is almost like a vinyl packaging not It's
kind of weird to describe, but the Beyond Complete
Series set is just that really, really bad cardboard.
And really, there's nothing wrong with the JLU
Complete Series set because that is a 10. That's
pretty awesome. Yeah, that's a 10 with the two
DVD things in there. But the individual seasons
and series, I can see... Where your complaint
is Steve you have any thoughts on the on the
DVD stuff? If you do happen to get them do not
go to eBay buy them directly from Amazon or anywhere
else because I got screwed like I said before
is But I'm very happy even though I have the
individual sets Yes, so we are gonna go to a
Voicemail about Justice League from JT from Saskatoon,
we're gonna have some ads and we're gonna come
back with the outro. You can hear more of this

.com. We introduced some characters from the
DC Comics universe that I forgot about, mainly
the Manhunters in the Brightest Day or Darkest
Night episode in the first season. There was
Metamorphose, one of my all -time favorites that
I kind of forgot about a little bit. The voice
cast is probably my favorite thing about this
series, is they make you care about the characters
as people and not just, you know, hey look, they're
superheroes. I don't know, it's just very well
done. You can see that it was a letter of love.
Bruce Timm absolutely loves this comics universe,
these characters, and everyone that worked on
the series probably shared that love to some
degree, because I don't think there's really
any bad episodes, at least ones. I pretty much
loved everything of Justice League. The only
one that I would really complain about was the
Eclipso episode, because I read those comics
growing up, and it just... for me it didn't really
ring true for the character but overall is probably
my absolute favorite uh series so far in the
dca like i love batman superman to death but
i've always been more of a keen person in terms
of comic books so it's up there it's like batman's
first justice league second to be honest but
overall i love this series all right talk to
you guys later bye so that's it finally Tooncast
