ToonCast
A Pup Named Scooby-Doo

About this Episode
This is TFJU and Mike with the Gatecast Radio
Network. This is prefacing a Pup Named Scooby
-Doo episode for Tooncast. Just like to let everybody
know that Dion for some reason was fading in
and out. But it's pretty much cool. There should
be no audio breakups or lags in response. Also
at the very end there will be two closing themes
because in a Pup Named Scooby -Doo the very first
episode had an instrumental only closing theme
and then the rest of the show had a regular theme
that was sung by the D - group that that they
had had working on the show so please stay tuned
for that Hello and welcome to the sixth episode
of tune cast The hell was I gonna talk about
now? Oh, yeah brought you by the ecast radio
network. I am your OSDF doing Mike and I am joined
by Drunk professor and the music man Say hello
guys before we start going to dead air here no,
no What's up? Mr. Delay the show a day and all
that kind of crap. I'm tired, man. I'm wasted.
I'm this. I'm that. I was not wasted. Let's get
that out of the way right now. Don't even lie.
You know you had six bottles of Yeager. No. That's
zero. That's zero. No sleep, yes. But today we'll
be discussing a pup named Scooby -Doo. Nice segue
to the save there, Kevin. Well, he's not saved
yet. So what's been going on with you guys this
past week? I just want the listeners to have
a look at the last 15 minutes. No. Anyway. Anyway.
What's been going on with you, Kevin? You're
drunk. Let's see. Last week, a lot of stuff was
going on. In the last week, I looked at 15 different
houses. Looking at. two more a second time tomorrow
so there's a good chance I might be putting an
offer in a house by the end of the week so that's
exciting news for me at least um let's see one
week from tomorrow the Transformers of Matrix
of Leadership complete series collection should
be showing up at my door so that's awesome and
what else is going on oh that's not That's it
shows just from that little piece of news. That's
it. No show shows over You bastard. I want that
set damn it Okay, so I guess I won't mention
that a week after that the GI Joe said I don't
care about that one Let's see other stuff that's
been going on this week the the Transformers
tournament is still ongoing over at TFW 2005
when this airs if you want to head over there
and vote the Contest that will be going on when
this airs is Mixmaster against Vortex will be
ending and the one that will be beginning when
this airs is top spin against scrapper So that's
still in the first round. So that's been some
fun so far debating the different characters
there that tops and top spins a bit We've had
a couple of sets so far so And with the give
you an update on the behind the voice actors
comm recently we've well basically I have updated
the Peter Cullen page so you can actually go
to Peter Cullen's page and listen to At least
15 different characters that he's voiced, and
I'm trying to get a few more done here in the
next little bit. So that's a new feature that's
going on over there. They also actually have
a pretty cool feature going on over there called
Voice This, where they basically put a kind of
like a, where you provide the caption, but instead
you provide a voice. So they put a picture up
of a scene and they take entries from different
people and kind of a little be your own voice
actor type person, and you can record a caption
for that. that picture so it's kind of fun to
play around with. Yeah I went over there the
other day and I had sent you a message on Skype
I said you'll need to get Donatello on there.
Yeah that's I've got two things going on this
week I just finished with Peter Cullen after
that I'm tackling a huge project to try to get
the Frank Welker page more complete. And after
that I'm gonna start adding some more of the
voice compares with them starting with the turtle
saw hopefully get some Donatello Raphael Leonardo
Yeah, I don't I think it's gonna take me a long
time So that's what I got going on so far what
about you neon I just ordered my dawn peak CDs.
I'm waiting for those. I thought you're gonna
say you just ordered a pizza Hey waiting a half
hour for Philly steak cheesesteak sandwiches
is different than delaying the show a day. Gotta
get my shots in when I can. Fourth of July drunk.
I'm sorry I'm sorry go ahead Dion. You know what
that was just too damn funny I don't care. But
I ordered my Don Peak CDs I'm waiting for those
to show up plus he's actually giving me a free
Jazz CD. No, no cost and I'm actually trying
to get You're fading again, I Don't know why
I have I can hear you now I Was gonna say I don't
know why I don't know I just faded out there
for a minute. Oh Anyway, I was saying um, I'm
trying to get Ron Hitchcock's website promoted
a little bit. I did that on my internet And you're
fading again And now he can hear you I Don't
dude I do not know what is wrong with Skype.
I Really think maybe Skype just doesn't let you
doesn't want you promoting on its cogs website
Just doesn't like us. Oh, yeah, I know Yeah,
yeah, we know eBay anyway I was trying to promote
a website on my show and that. So yeah, there
you go. There's been my weekend. Yeah, my week's
been kind of eventful and non -eventful. We finally
got TFG121 working and able to download after
about four days after it was supposed to be released.
Did you break it? No, Steve broke it. Oops. He
didn't have the file right and plus the damn.
I don't know why it's either iTunes or it's the
feed I'm not sure but It shows up below episode
double zero because it has according to iTunes.
It has no date on it Because mostly the new episodes
that the newest episodes will show up at the
very top because obviously it's the most recent
date Yeah, I don't know So actually TFG one podcast
will be ending next week. We are going to be
recording episodes 22 through 24 Thursday and
Friday night We're gonna record 22 and 23 for
a Thursday and then 24 Friday evening. So those
will be released all next week I'll look when
you guys get them posted. I'll look at I'll look
in Clanko because I'm subscribed to that and
I'll look and see where they end Yeah, I don't
know if it's just me or if it's you know i don't
know steve says they show up fine but on mine
they don't they show up at the very bottom after
the episode zero so yeah no like i said i'll
look i'll look and see where they end up because
obviously it's i i don't use itunes and it's
not that i'm knocking it i just don't knock it
all the time don't lie actually i don't knock
it now that this now that the scripts for my
screen reader are totally free so i might i might
start using no people started bitching dude i
kid you not People started bitching because they
thought that paying $75 for a set of scripts
was a bit much So they actually they actually
made the scripts for free So yeah, so I might
I might start using iTunes just to see how I
like it But um, yeah, I'll look in Clango later
on tonight where that because you said it's episode
22, you know 21 is the one we just released but
anyway Okay I'll look I'll look and see where
that ends up in my list and then you know I'm
sure I'll say it throughout whatever other podcasts
I record this week, but I'm I'm not an over patriarch
I'm a patriot, but I'm not like overly enthused
about it like I don't sit there setting off fireworks
at 430 in the fucking morning on July 5th Where
I don't think that has anything to do I don't
think it has to do either I think it has to do
with people wanting to light shit on fire But
that's beside the point the point is have I saw
your tweet dude Have more fucking sense than
to light fireworks off at four in the fucking
morning when people sleep I saw your tweets and
I'm like Rear! I didn't know I was like okay
look I understand what he's saying but at the
same damn time dude People spend like two to
three to five hundred dollars on fireworks. What
the hell are they supposed to do with them? And
then we wonder why there's so many people on
welfare Hmm yeah, no, it's true These people
go out and spend all this money on freaking fireworks.
No, you're right, dude So I think we're gonna
get into the It's what they want to do with their
money, so there you go. Let's just nail that
down here. Yeah, I think we're going to get into
the show topic today, which is... Let's see if
I can find the right thing. His son have been
queued up! Aw, shut up! Alright, that's it. Here's
one for you. Actually, I'm gonna have to do it
like this I have to do it this way. So where
our main show topic today is We are going to
go on to the history lesson, and the drunk professor
is going to take it away. All right, nerds. It
is time for another history lesson, and this
is the not drunk professor of OzKDog bringing
it to you. For episode six, we go back to 1988
for, as you could tell from the theme song, A
Pup Named Scooby Doo. Burden with Hanna -Barbera's
time -worn, retro notion of exploring the childhood
years of its established characters, Scooby -Doo,
the world's favorite chicken -hearted canine,
returns in this series as a cute but clumsy puppy,
along with the kid versions of his friends Shaggy,
Daphne, Freddy, and Velma as they solve kid -sized
mysteries. The show managed to revitalize the
old concept with wacky Tex Avery -style humor,
parodies of rock videos and spoofs of murder
she wrote, and other live -action sleuthers.
Best of all, the series lampooned the Scooby
-Doo format itself. This Saturday morning half
-hour series debuted on ABC September 10th 1988
and ran until September 1st 1990. It was later
rebroadcast on both ABC and the Cartoon Network
off and on for the rest of the 90s and has appeared
on the boomerang networks in the 2000s. The series
lasted for a total of 30 episodes. All right,
let's move on to the rest of the episode. This
has been the sober Professor Boss K -Dog, and
class is dismissed. He's drunk. Don't let him
lie to you folks. I'm telling you, he is drunk.
I saw him wavering into the studio. He is talking
like this. And if he was going into class, they
would all look at him like, oh my god, class
is dismissed. Let's go to recess. Let's go home,
man. Yeah, let's go home. No class today. I sound
like sea spray there for a minute anyway So yeah,
I think we're gonna end it with this Time for
the general memories and recollections Well,
let's get into some off -air stuff because last
night right before we're ready to record the
drunk professor over there A general memory.
Yes. Well, this is leading up to the general
memories because you have no recollection and
are not a fan of this show. Poor sheltered child.
This show is awesome. Hold on, hold on. Let me
defend myself. Remember, this show is airing
between 1988 and 1990. So? And in 1988 and 1990,
for me, there was a lot of better choices on
TV for cartoons. We had Cops, Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles, DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, Garfield,
Denver the Last Dinosaur, and the second incarnation
of a real American hero from G .I. Joe. So pardon
me if a kid version of Scooby -Doo was not at
the top of my list. Well, okay, and I can understand
that, but it wasn't up top of my list either,
but... Since I found it in No, well, no, I actually
turning away from the spectacle is actually scooby
-doo. Where are you? I hate that show See, I
was a big fan of the original scooby -doo I think
my problem is it doesn't matter what show it
is if it's I take that back There's only one
exception, but if it's a show that is taking
kid versions of others Of an already established
show, I tend not to be a big fan at first. I'm
not saying it's not a good show. It's just not
something that usually gets my interest, a kid
version of a regular show. I didn't like it when
the Flintstones did it. There's been a ton of
them that have done it. There's one incarnation
of Scooby -Doo that I'm really not a big fan
of. And that's the What's New Scooby -Doo shit.
So there you go. Like 13 ghosts Yeah, I like
13 ghosts, but I'm talking about the new stuff
that they got out this year. Okay Yeah, what's
new scooby -doo was the last two years and now
it's shaggy and scooby -doo get a clue. I do
think that scooby -doo has the most incarnations
of different shows than Out of all cartoons ever
pretty much. Yeah I don't think anything else
comes even close but no, but a pump was it was
cool because and and I think it different It
was different than the rest of them as far as
like, you know, the Flintstones and everything
else that was doing, you know, the kid version
stuff. Like I said before, I like it just because
it's much cooler. It's less scarier. I mean,
yeah, it's scary. Of course, we all know it's
just some guy in a mask or some woman in a mask
at the end, just like in the original Scooby
-Doo, Where Are You? But I mean, if you look
at Scooby -Doo, Where Are You? You sit a five
-year -old down in front of that. they're gonna
piss their pants. No seriously if you look at
the intro you look at the Batman crossover intro
that they did there is a there's a scene in the
intro where Shaggy opens a filing cabinet and
this orange flame jumps out at him I mean what
kid isn't gonna be scared of that but I mean
this this was actually really really cool I liked
it a lot better Course like probably Kevin. I
don't have a real childhood memory of it, but
just catching it on Cartoon Network over the
last ten years in syndication Even though it's
only played once in the morning now at least
there's DVD Yeah, they used to do it like they
used to do it like all day long sometimes they
would do like a whole whole morning Morning marathon
yeah, but at least I have it on DVD now, so if
I need a good laugh I can always pop it in So
what are your general memories of it? I'll let
Deion take that one. I'll be very honest. I never
knew the show existed until like 90. And it wasn't
that I didn't watch it. It wasn't that I wasn't
a fan. I just never knew it existed until 90.
But when I saw it, I thought it was great. They
did a very good job of it. I was hoping that
they would have done more than what they did,
but they didn't. So, you know, I mean, it's like
Mike said, you know, and Kevin, you know, Kevin,
you touched on it a little bit, too. You know,
Scooby Doo has probably had more incarnations
of a show than any other character I've known.
Yep. So. Yeah, I mean I didn't know it existed
until yesterday. No, I'm just kidding He's probably
not lying folks. He's always been on a drinking
binge since July 3rd Anyways, I do remember being
on TV when I was a kid. Actually, I don't remember
ever really watching a lot of it. Like I said,
because I didn't like the kid versions of regular
shows. But I will give it credit that one good
thing about it that I do kind of like is that
it actually makes fun of itself and the regular
Scooby -Doo show, which we'll get more into when
we get into a later part of the episode. But
I like the fact that it was able to recognize
how long it had been around and some of the the
key things about the scooby -doo franchise and
then actually step back and make fun of it a
little bit I enjoyed that part I will say that
it had a lot of comedic moments oh yeah it had
a lot more comedic moments than the original
scooby -doo where are you show I mean it the
scooby -doo where are you show did have comedic
moments but not as many as this you know this
show did what do you think mushroom man scooby
as Now remember, I didn't say it! Let's see,
where is that clip? You smug son of a - It's
not my fault the Domino's computers are fucking
broke and they don't know how to read something.
Anyways, um... Domino's, we're sorry for that
fault over time. No, it's true, the general,
actually the guy that answered the phone was
the general manager. And he said, sorry, the
computer's not working. It's not reading your
selections. So anyway, I liked it better because
it was more relatable for me than the older show.
Yeah, I liked Scooby and Shaggy in the older
show. I really could give a crap less about Velma,
Daphne, or Freddy in the older show. Daphne was
just stupid. Velma was too much of a smart, smart
-ass. Yeah, and then some of the ones with scrappy.
I thought that was kind of cool, but oh hey scrappy
dual rules shut up. Oh No, we are direct opposites
in our scooby -doo You like I? Say no partially
and here's why when I first saw scrappy in scooby
-doo I honestly thought that they were going
a bit too far with Bringing in you know family
members of the scooby -doo clan. I mean you had
scooby -dum You know which I mean He tries to
be a detective like his uncle scooby, but it
or his cousin But you know it just well the name
says it all scooby -dum Yes, I know that No,
I know that I understand that but you got scrappy
-doo. Who's this puppy who's trying to be all
tough? And it just, it didn't work for him. Maybe
that's why I never watched any of the extra or
later Scooby -Doo incarnations. I honestly think
that - I hated Scrappy. No, I don't, I don't
hate him. I just think for a puppy that size,
it just didn't work being as tough as he - See,
I thought it - I thought it was cute. I thought
it was cute. I did think he was cute, but I just
didn't think it worked for him. But I did watch,
I did watch them. So I don't, I'm not saying
I hate Scrappy, I think he's cute. I just didn't
think he worked in, you know, some of the cartoons.
The drawing professor is wrong. Scrappy rules.
We move on to the characters and voice actors
segment. And looking at this list, before we
even start going into the topics of the actual
list, there is a lot of Transformers crossover.
Oh, there's a lot of everything crossover in
this one. This is a bit different than the last
couple episodes we've done. Probably last, I
don't know. two or three if not more episodes
because we've had a lot of episodes lately where
we've been dealing with cartoons that a very
small cast did the the voices and this this is
a very large cast yeah but i mean just looking
at this first part of the list you have michael
bell you have uh... richard goddard uh... see
who else kasey kason well he wasn't really wasn't
as far as kasey kason frank welker i mean just
those names alone are transformed crossovers
arthur burkart Yeah, there's quite a few. Yep,
very much so. And of course, the ever -impressive
Don Messick is Scooby -Doo, which I believe,
even though Dylan will probably correct me and
say no, it wasn't, but I believe this was Don's
last thing as Scooby -Doo. I read that somewhere
saying a pup named Scooby -Doo was the last time
he voiced Scooby. No, he did something in 95
94 to 95. I think he started to do the other
one, but he don't I don't think he This is his
final finish of of a scooby -doo roll Because
he liked he like out of nowhere just like stopped
doing voices in like 96 or something wasn't it?
He said that he said he did say I know there
was a movie that came out in 95 I just do not
remember the name of it right now, but he he
did say that um He stopped smoking so he couldn't
do the Scooby voice anymore That's interesting
Yeah, he actually he used to smoke and that was
the only way he could get the Scooby voice when
he quit smoking. That was it Just like like Mike
was saying before that not to back up a little
bit But this this is a star -studded cast and
not only with the Transformers I just want to
just real quick take about ten seconds and just
name a couple of the other names of people that
are involved in this some of These are gonna
be repeats, but we said you know Michael Bell
you had June for a Casey case and Richard Gaudier
Don Messick BJ Ward Frank Welker Charlie Adler
I mean there is a ton of people in this just
to name a couple more we had Trace McNeil again
Alan Oppenheimer from He -Man fame. So, I mean,
this was not a bad mix of people that were doing
voices. That's not a bad mix of actors. Right.
No, it was not. You know, I'm looking through
here and I'm not seeing anybody that provided
the voice for Scrappy. Oh, wait, that's because
Scrappy sucks. Shut the hell up. I didn't say
it. I would like to point that out right now.
Yeah, I didn't say I know you didn't say it did
I say that you said it? No, I didn't say that
you say it so shut the hell up I can tell I'm
gonna have to use that a lot this episode in
this incarnation of scooby -doo What are out
of the little kid versions of all these characters?
Who's which ones do you guys like which ones
do you dislike? Take it away. I'm trying to prove
you wrong over here looking up Don Messick stuff.
So I didn't say that it was right, Mike. I'm
just saying that that's the last role I know
of that he did in 95. OK, all right. OK, all
right. According to Wiki, Scooby -Doo in later
roles. In 1969, he was cast as the cowardly canine
Scooby -Doo on Scooby -Doo. This role would remain
Messick's biggest and best known. He voiced the
Great Dane through all of the various versions
of Scooby -Doo on television in numerous formats
from 1969 to 1985 for telefilms and a number
of commercials as well. Messick was still voicing
the role when a pup named Scooby -Doo came along
from 1988 to 1991 and it does not say anything
else as far as the later years as far as more
Scooby stuff. It talks about the Jetsons Uniblab,
Mr. Spacely, stuff like that. So like I said,
I read somewhere other than here, other than
Wiki, that a pup named Scooby Doo was his last
thing, because I think 13 ghosts happened before
this. Yeah, it did. It happened in the early
80s. Exactly. So this was Don's last Scooby roll.
So because I I saw a movie in night that was
put out in 95 and it may have been done while
He was still doing the scooby voice and that
may have was it because I wasn't a scooby -doo
live -action movie that you saw No, this was
an animated series or animated movie. I don't
know. All right Anyway, who's your favorite least
favorite whatever? Oh Boy I don't I don't i honestly
don't know uh... getting uh... will clarify this
or nobody nobody complains about us being wrong
i think we're correct if we say about names who
we do with the last television series that he
did yes what he did it was part of what we do
as he did some other like one -timers on t b
he did like you know scooby -doo and raving nights
was just a little thing did video games is that
straight to video type stuff no other actual
television series right Alright, so anyway, so
don't complain shut the hell up. I'm talking
to the listeners drunk I think probably one of
my favorite characters is Shaggy just because
he's he could be a bit He's a bit of the comic
relief Since we are talking about Shaggy. Let's
see what he has to say about himself if I can
find it Let's see. Where's Shaggy Shaggy Shaggy
Shaggy I might have Tom Rover talking about Shaggy
in school. Shaggy is pretty much Shaggy at any
time or place in history or even at age 12. We
can see all the beginnings of who Shaggy will
become. He's already saying, he's already constantly
famished. He always wants to be chowing down.
He's already pretty much scared of his own shadow.
And he already has his pet, a puppy named Scooby
-Doo. And these two are two peas in a pod. They're
always together. If Shaggy and Scooby can avoid
work, they will avoid work. If they can avoid
work and eat, I mean, that's even better. That's
the perfect plan. We did include Shaggy's family
because Shaggy and Scooby are the number one
unit in this and we wanted to see their home
life. His dad is the police chief and his little
sister and Shaggy lives in a very typical looking
house, but it always has the Christmas lights
strung up all year round. That comes from me
because one year I did leave my Christmas lights
up from one Christmas to the next. and the neighbors
were pretty uh fed up with that i hate hiding
from a monster on an empty stomach so when all
else fails on my end you can always depend on
tom ruger yeah i think my favorite and in this
one in all other scooby -doo incarnations is
scooby i mean i don't think you can beat him
not in this one in the other ones i don't think
you can beat him in any of them That's debatable.
I think it's Scooby Doo. Where are you? He wasn't
really that great. But in this one, you can't
beat him, no. Scrappy rules. Anyways. Yes, he
does. Shut up. Probably my least favorite character
would be Red Hairy. Yeah, I actually thought
Red was funny in some aspects. And here is Freddy
in Red. wait no that's the wrong one where's
freddy and red freddy here it is you're cruising
for a bruising jones don't touch my bike just
watch and that came from a scene where freddy
thought that red had stolen shaggy's red bike
and he took a sandblaster to red's blue bike
Yeah, that was a very, very funny one. I'm going
to have to agree with Dion on this one. I think
Red's my least favorite character on the show,
too. But that's only because Scrappy's not in
it. No, I'm not saying Red's bad. It's like Mike
said, Red is funny in some aspects. But in some
of the aspects, he's just lame. I've got the
DVD set here with me. In the episode, what is
it? Wanted to score Where is it? It was the oh
the schnook who took my comic book Where he touches
where he touches commander cools that time? Travelling
gizmo that he's like he's like get me out of
here. That's not very funny Yep, he's always
saying that that's oh, yeah, yeah And then another
one with Freddy was after the aftermath of Freddy's
sandblasting his bike Right Red took his bike
and ran Freddy over in the following scene It's
got Daphne in a nurse's uniform and she's dabbing
Freddy's nose with a claw but he's like when
he start bounces he start bounces up and down
and he's got a clear tire tread from his stomach
all the way up to over his forehead from a bicycle
as funny as I Have to say my two favorite out
of all of them uh... is scooby and velma because
their their relationship between the two of them
was kinda cool but you know scooby is kinda sweet
on her more than every you know it as far as
the two females go uh... and also in that episode
with uh... the uh... what is it uh... the first
episode a bicycle built for boo which is the
one where uh... shaggy's bike gets stolen and
it's for the chain for for the newspaper guy
anyway um... in that episode scoobies trying
to hunt down the paper or the or the bike and
uh... He's got he's saying he's got him on the
leash and scooby just takes off at full speed
Running with shaggy like flying up in the air
behind him and out of the garage of shaggy's
house comes Velma Daphne and Freddy Velma's on
this skid motor road motorized skateboard controls
and Freddy's like mystery away. Oh or whatever
else and The next thing you see down the street
shaggy's like slow down scooby slow down and
behind them is like The other three, Freddie
and Daphne are like, slow down, Velma, slow down.
So I thought Scooby and Velma both like speed.
Yeah, they do. They're very just, I don't know.
It's not that they're hyper. It's not that they're
hyper, but I happen to tend to agree with you,
Mike. I think Velma and. scooby were you know
just you know they were friends and what not
they seem to like each other a lot you know did
either of you guys get a disconnect from from
some of the kid characters to the adult characters
I mean I think some of them some of them managed
to make sense like yeah that's the kid version
of the adult guy and I and I recognize them as
the same character but some of them to me seem
like completely different no I did it depends
on when you watch first no okay uh... i didn't
really at all uh... just because you know here's
uh... mister ruder on deafening i think i played
this offer but here it is again one of the one
characters Did you say shopping mall? We've taken
this lovely girl that we all know as sort of
just kind of a straight man in the older series.
And now she's quite a little character. You have
a subway station in your house? Oh, of course.
Don't you? Daphne Blake is very wealthy, but
when she's 12 years old she's very much into
her fashion. She wears go -go boots. She's a
bit vain. Pringles! She's also completely skeptical
of every sort of monster or villain that comes
around. She doesn't believe in ghosts. Get real.
Get serious. There are no such things as ghosts.
She's voiced by Kelly Martin. This place is grody.
Who's done unto great things. When she came in
for the audition, Kelly nailed it because she
could scream like no one's business. The most
blood curdling scream out of like a 12 year old
that you've ever heard. And now Daphne doesn't
scream at the cloppy green ghost or the cheese
monster. Daphne screams when mud gets on her
clothing. So I love Daphne. As far as the differences,
I mean I remember watching Scooby Doo or RU.
differences for Daphne in this series she wears
pink in the original series she wears purple
you gotta realize the original when did the original
series run in the sixties right but when was
it like 1969 wasn't it supposed to be set the
the actual show timeline it was supposed to be
set in what the seventies exactly and that's
what they were going for and I've got a And I've
got a clip of Mr. Ruger saying that as well but
you know as he said you know in the older series
she's more of a you know damsel in distress kind
of like unfunny like really non sequitur character
I mean in almost every episode of scooby -doo
or are you she's the one that's in trouble Yeah,
but also in scooby -doo. Where are you? She was
yeah, so not a dream though as As her 12 year
old self is but I don't know but I mean, so I
really don't see a dissimilarity in them You're
just having you're just having drunken illusions
you're on yourself on that No, and for those
of you that aren't familiar with Kelly Martin
You have said that she'd gone on it to some other
fame Probably the most notable thing she's done
is at least for me is Lucy Knight in the ER series
About 36 episodes of ER Wow Yeah, I wonder that
was You know, so that would have been the probably
the last time you guys, you know people out there
have seen her She's got a couple bits here and
there but that's the last main role. She had
thank God they dropped car inside that house
on but they finally they've been fired right
they find a way to set the bomb i do have others
that are going on to the voice actors things
with voice actors stuff i do have other ones
i do have one first to be in one for freddy in
red so i don't know if i don't know not sure
what's yeah yeah i do up with all the first Velma
said, chinkies. It must be a clue. Look for me.
Of course, there's Velma Dinkley. Wonderful design
on her. She's just got a big round head, just
a tiny little girl. She used the sort of old
yogi bear. And she walks along. Aha. Velma spoke.
Originally, we conceived Velma as being almost
totally silent. Occasionally, she would say,
chinkies. And then her computer screen, she'd
be working on her computer, it would come up
with all these extremely important clues and
theories. I'll bet they almost got this whole
thing figured out. Well, Daphne, the first clue
was the missing snow making machine. But we found
that she has to explain some of this stuff because
Daphne, Freddy and Shaggy probably couldn't comprehend
what was on the computer screen. Exactly. So
that's Tom's explanation of Velma's characterization.
And like Dion said earlier, in the older series,
she is much more stuck up as far as being super
smart. In this one, she's kind of like... She
flaunts it way too much. She is smart in the
older series, but she, I think... Oh yeah. Yeah,
there's a bit of a conceited. Yep, very much
so. There's a bit of conceitedness there. I think
we can go on to playing Scooby really quick And
then once we get into the actual I'll play Scooby
and then Freddy and Red and then once we get
into the actual meat and potatoes of the show
I'll play the gang and the villains and stuff
like that The original series, Scooby -Doo Where
Are You, had this great dog character who was
added to this group of sleuths and of course
he kind of took over the show. Scooby has always
appealed to kids of all ages. I mean, he is just
an incredibly lovable, big doofus of a scared
dog. Basically, he's a real dog and yet sometimes
his tail will like... become a pointer and have
a point at the end or his nose will beep and
when he's tracking something and it'll blow red
almost like Rudolph and on one occasion his nose
actually jumped off his face and ran down the
street. It's a seaweed monster! Scooby has some
funny little looks he does now and one is just
like his little his mouth. How about a Scooby
snack? Scooby is clearly just wild about Scooby
snacks. Here we're seeing Scooby in his formative
years and here we're seeing Scooby have his first
Scooby snack. Stephanie and the gang have often
been able to sort of bribe him into acts of bravery
with the promise of a Scooby snack. Now Scooby
has always been fond of Scooby snacks. Scooby
snacks, of course, come in many flavors that
Scooby and Shaggy enjoy. Creamy garlic. Spaghetti
bread. I always felt that Scooby snacks were
indeed dog biscuits. Shaggy would probably beg
to differ. Sorry, Daphne, but even I wouldn't
do it for one. That they are much better than
your standard dog biscuit and therefore he's
going to take a sample. He does enjoy food. Scooby
-dooby -doo! Yes, that, you know, is Scooby in
a nutshell, and if that segment doesn't warm
everyone's heart up to a pup named Scooby -doo,
then you're all fucking heartless. Oh, most definitely.
I will say that Don will surely be missed for
that role. Actually, just really quick before
we move on. He was very good at that role. I
did not even know Dan Gilbazan was in this show
until the game show episode for Letter or Worse.
He is the game show host, Davey the Letter Guy.
And as soon as I heard that voice, I'm like,
what the fuck? Bumblebee is on Scooby Doo? Holy
shit. I was like, hell yeah. I know, I was really
surprised. Yeah, I think he did more than that.
I'm not sure how many other voices he did. I'm
not sure. Well, additional voices, Tress McNeil.
Holy crap, she's everywhere. She's been in almost
every fucking show we've talked about on ToonCast.
Holy shit, yes is I Like I like Frank Welker's
credits in this one you got like the actual characters
that it's yeah, I know mr. Boo Robo pub Uncle
Eddie then of course various animals. Yeah So
yeah that that's pretty much all we've got for
the voice actors stuff, so I think we're gonna
move on All right, we are gonna move on to the
creators Segment and yeah, I realized that I
ended the last one with yeah, we're gonna move
on and now we're moving on Well, oh well, I'm
just used to saying it like that The production
companies we have Hanna -Barbera productions
Okay, I'm not reading that one. Oh, come on.
It's your favorite one. You put that one in there
on fucking purpose The distributors are ABC Warner
Brothers and the series was directed by Don Lusk
Peter Sommer Arthur Davis Oscar do fowl. I think
that's how it said I don't know, I'm probably
butchering it, but oh well. Bob Goh, Ray Patterson,
and Carl Urbano. The series had tons of writing
credits. Nobody that I really know other than
Tom Ruger. I think he must have had a bigger
role than just writer because they wouldn't have
put him on - He's one of the producers too. Okay,
I was going to say because they wouldn't have
just put him on - This one for writer on a DVD
talking about characters. Oh hell. No, you'd
have to be involved more than that Oh, yeah,
yeah, there was quite a few writers I will just
name the ones that did the most since there was
about three of them that did at least You know
were involved in the writing for at least about
20 of the episodes that meaning Obviously they
they shared some of the episodes in the writing
since there was only 30 episodes total but Bill
Matheny Lane Raker and and Laren bright. I have
no idea if I'm saying their names right, but
they were the main writers in the series Yeah,
yep And then of course the producers you have
Hannah and Barbera William Hanna and Joseph Barbera
by whom I believe both have passed away now I
think yes, or is Joe's no Joseph passed away
Yeah, yeah and then Tom Ruger Scott Gerald's
Bill Matheny And then of course the music I think
it's John Dabney not Debney because I have his
I have back to the future soundtrack on my iPhone
and I think it's spelled Dabney He did the music
for this show Yeah, 27 episodes of it so it's
the same guy that did the back to back to the
future Also, for 24 out of the 30 episodes, guess
who did the casting? Andrea Romano. She has been
in almost every show we've talked about as well.
She has. And then the other 14 episodes was Chris
Zimmerman. And just for the record, William Hanna
died in 2001, and Barbera died 2006. I knew Barbera
had died. I knew Barbera passed on. yeah i was
in two thousand one in two thousand six yeah
i had known that that hannah had passed the night
ike could have been was pretty sure that that
barbara did it's kind of weird seeing some of
the cartoons now knowing that they're gone there
to animation legends right there how we could
do a we could do a show just on that just on
themselves uh... them alone well not even there
i mean obviously their cartoons but just on their
you know k like a biographical type of deal Anyway,
maybe maybe down the line. Um, Shut up No, but
they did they did do it, you know Hannah Barbera
did do a lot of stuff, you know, they did oh,
yeah Oh, no, I know. I'm half half of it's on
the schedule when we get to the later episodes
of yeah As far as the writing goes I like how
compare okay You know and of course we're gonna
compare this to scooby -doo where are you because
it's coming from the same cloth almost I like
how all the monsters in This seemed real, but
they made them they wrote them to be wacky like
there are scenes where Shaggy and Scooby or all
five of them will Stop it like a hairdressing
salon or a bank or something and say to the monster.
Oh, yeah Here's your new account and you get
this free toaster and you get this and you get
that Just to get away from the monster and it
and the monster is like, huh? Yeah You know,
so I thought that was really cool and it made
it more kid -friendly. Sorry. Yeah No, I was
saying I like that because it made it it was
very comedic and you could do that and I mean
there was I think I think they you know in one
of the banks the monster actually got a refrigerator
you know so it was funny they made it very hilarious
and they didn't do that in the original show
and I wish they had of but you know hey it's
a generation gap what do you expect yeah And
it's actually very funny. Well, I'll save that
for the actual show. So yeah, I don't really
have anything else on the writing credits. It's
amazing to me as we're doing each of these episodes
throughout Tooncast. How many times Andrea Romano
has shown up? It just shows that - Oh, good grief.
Let's see. How many have we covered with her
name in it? Tiny Toons, Animaniacs. this those
are all connected and they went straight from
the space is not going to show you how but i
mean still you know now charlie adler's been
in tiny tunes and in this he's also done uh...
other stuff but anyway uh... uh... so yeah uh...
overall i think the writing was excellent on
the show uh... i think it was nice I think it
was the return of Stinkweed or it was either
the return of Stinkweed or I believe it was Lights
Camera Monster where Stinkweed actually shows
up. Well, Freddy had just gotten a new camera
and they were going to film a Stinkweed movie
on his new camera and he thought that the real
monster was Shaggy. So it just goes to show you
that the writing on this was very in -depth as
far as coming out with details as far as you
know Freddy thinking that it's Shaggy dressed
up as the monster when reality it's the actual
monster yep so yeah I think that's all we have
for this segment now it's time for the actual
show for more than a decade it looked as if this
would be the final weekly scooby -doo series
following the unsuccessful run of the 13 ghosts
of scooby -doo The creators went back to the
drawing board and turned the original Mystery
Inc characters into small children who now worked
under the title of the Scooby -Doo Detective
Agency. Although they would have been this age
in the 50s or 60s, the kids were far more like
kids of the 80s with computers, skateboards,
and gadgets that were popularized far later as
in the original series. The villains of this
series were always bad guys in rubber masks.
A concept that they had gotten away with from
when Scrappy entered the show and the ghost became
real, more cartoonish than the rest of the shows,
the characters seemed to nod back to the old
Warner Brothers cartoons, complete with bugging
eyes, gaping jaws, and a myriad of hijinks and
sound effects that were unlike previous Scooby
-Doo entries. And I would like to just say before
we go into that, speaking about the wild takes
and stuff, Before I get into the overview and
the tone of the show, Tom Ruger did talk about
the wild takes, and here it is. helped us redesign
them, and they were simpler. There are fewer
lines, but the lines are a little bolder. They
were very movable, rubbery, and... fun chunky
little characters that could really animate.
They could really stretch and really squash.
And so that's why we got into this whole wild
take concept. Meaning that when Shaggy and Scooby
saw a monster, their eyes would pop out of their
heads and then their eyes would like go running
away. Or when red herring surprises and scares
Freddy, he would leap completely out of his clothing,
down to his boxer shorts and scream and his hair
would fly off. Same with Daphne, same with Velma,
so. Our characters really wore their emotions
on their sleeves in this show. One of the great
bits of advice I ever received in my animation
career was from Joe Barbera. He called me and
he said, now, I may tell you, I see what you're
doing with the Scoob. It's okay to have them
spring apart and... come back together. But what
you need, you need sound effects that are just
as wild, just as crazy. They need to be loud
and just right in your face. And he was absolutely
right. When Scooby -like flies apart, but then
you're hearing the scream of a chattering monkey,
it does make it just a little bit funnier. Yeah.
He's absolutely right on that. Oh, no doubt.
No doubt at all. And it's true. I mean, he is
right. So I'll let you read the overtone. The
new show used the same basic formula as the original
1969 show. We have the gang solving supernatural
-based mysteries where the villains, ghost monsters,
were always revealed as bad guys in masks and
costumes. So that was pretty much the same as
the original incarnation. The biggest difference
was, like we were getting to a little bit with
that clip, was the tone of the show. A pup named
Scooby -Doo was a wackier, more extremely comic
version of Scooby -Doo that satirized the conventions
of the show's previous incarnations. So it was
not uncommon for the characters to do these wild
text -avery Bob Clampett -esque takes like we
just were mentioning when they ran into ghosts
and monsters. Animation director and overseas
supervisor Glenn Kennedy animated many of the
wild take sequences personally. Fred was constantly
blaming a character. that we talked about called
Red Herring for each and every crime on the show.
True to his name, Red was always innocent except
for the one episode in which Fred didn't blame
him. And shots of the characters and even some
of the ghosts and monsters dancing were inserted
into the obligatory late 80s pop rock music scored
chase sequences. The ghosts and monsters themselves
were also more comedic, such as creatures made
out of molten cheese, the ghost of a dog catcher.
The series also features Scooby and Shaggy as
their favorite superhero duo. Shaggy would be
the fearless Commander Cool, which was a combination
of Batman and Superman. And Scooby would be his
faithful canine sidekick. mellow mutt which was
a combination of crypto Robin and ace the bat
hound so those are the main I did not know I
did not know that I figured commander cool was
a was a combination of Superman and Batman but
I did not know that melo mutt was a combination
of crypto Robin and ace the bat hound I mean
I kind of figured it was something like that
actually I thought melo mutt was almost like
Like their own creation But I I didn't know it
was like based off of anything in particular
Yeah, so I'm basically basically we had a show
that was much like the 1969 show just a lot more
comedic and wackier Exactly less depressing But
as far as Mellow Mutt, I thought he was a ripoff
of Dino Mutt without the gadgets Seriously that
because i don't want to do this yeah well there
is that uh... the characters being general parodies
of their adult incarnations freddy was outspoken
spoken young boy who jumped to conclusions often
his own way imagination often noise the rest
of the gang his favorite magazine is the national
exaggerator and before accusing ren herring for
absolutely no reason which happens in all but
one episode He often states that ridiculous examples
such as mole people or aliens from another planet.
Daphne was a vain young girl who was quite skeptical
and sarcastic, especially towards Freddy. Being
born into money, she often called to her butler
Jenkins for help, sometimes rather silly help,
be scared for Bumblebee. She does something she
does not do while older, despite still being
fabulously wealthy. She often accuses the wrong
person who did the crime, only by her intuition.
She also has a deep infatuation with the color
pink, opposing older Daphne who prefers everything
in purple, preferring most of clothes and personal
possessions in said color. Shaggy was exactly
like his grown -up incarnation. He ate a lot
during the show, of course, usually having his
food eaten by Scooby, and used the terms like
and zoinks, just like he did in the 1969 version.
He sometimes agrees with other members of the
gang, considering the ghost, phantom, et cetera.
Scooby was like his adult version, too. So those
two characters weren't much changed, like some
of the other ones that we talked about before.
And then, of course, you had Velma, who was shown
as an intelligent little girl who has a briefcase
which can transform into a computer. telephone,
etc. She always uses the word jinkies, like we
heard in the clip a while back, either when finding
a clue or as a regular expression, and her computer
usually informs her who the criminal is, making
her always right, of course. So you had a lot
of the characters there taking some aspects of
their 1969 version and basically blowing them
out of proportion so that they're a parody of
themselves. So that's the one part of the show
that I kind of did like about it, that it made
fun of itself. yes and uh... before we get into
really that much anything else as far as the
gags and stuff uh... when i play two different
clips one is the gang in the mysteries uh...
and the other is the villains because we really
didn't cover the villains in the uh... characters
in the voice actors thing so here is the gang
mysteries With a pup named Scooby -Doo, we wanted
to not update the characters, we wanted to go
back to the time when they were young. So since
the series started originally, Scooby -Doo, where
are you, in 1969, we thought we wanted to have
Shaggy and the rest of the gang be around age
12. So we came up with Daphne, Fred, Velma, and
Shaggy as 12 -year -olds. With this new series,
we weren't trying to reinvent the wheel. We knew
we had some great elements and we didn't want
to lose the stuff that people were accustomed
to and the things that our fans wanted to see.
So of course we kept Zoinks, we kept Velma's
Chinkies, and a lot of the basic elements, the
sort of relationships between the characters,
we wanted to keep all of that going. Let's split
up, gang! Like, no! Scoob and I are staying right
here where it's safe. In the older version of
Scooby, I mean, the kids are sort of on their
own. They're driving around in the mystery machine.
They're teenagers. They're somewhat independent.
In a pup, we're talking about 12 -year -old kids
whose wives really do revolve around their family,
home, and school. Could you be like a deer and
drop Shuggy off at the new babysitters? So the
agency is not that van on wheels, but it's the
tree house in Shaggy's backyard. And so that's
where they reconnoit her to go over clues. Also,
we have like audience interaction at the end
of the mystery where one of our characters will
turn to the audience. Do you know who the monster
really is? Let's review the clues. So we do try
to take the audience along on this puzzle solution.
We've got to solve this mystery. And I would
like to say that I don't know, I mean, obviously
we had, you know, children's programming at the
time, like Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers and Muppets
and all that stuff, but watching this... For
those reincarnations. Huh? Thank you for those
reincarnations. Well, I'm just saying, we did
have other educational programming that was not
a cartoon back then. So basically... When I was
watching this this past week, and every time
I would hear at the end, you know, do you know
who the monster is, let's review the clues, whatever,
I'm thinking, holy crap, Blue's Clues and Barney
ripped off a pup named Scooby Doo. You purple
fucking bastard. You know, I thought the same
thing, like a long time ago, and then I, you
know, I hadn't watched it in a while, and now
that you're bringing that point up, it's so true.
I know, really. We lose, Kevin. He's probably
taking a sip of that keg over there telling you
Kevin's gonna so hate the description. I write
up for this episode Because you're participating
along it's not like I'm talking behind your back
Alright, so as I said before I missed out playing
the villains because I didn't want the voice
actors clip to go long and right now We're only
11 minutes into this one. So we're gonna play
the villains I think part of the fun part of
the variety of scooty series is that in each
episode we get a brand new monster And certainly,
in the beginning of the episode, it looks like
this is a genuine ghoul, or alien, or goblin,
or hideous beast from the center of the Earth.
And yet, by the time our group gets done with
the villain, we know that it's just some crazy
masked character. Mr. Boston. How'd you know
it was me? The monsters and ghouls in the show
tend to be not quite as terrifying as they might
have been in the original. Scooby -Doo, where
are you? A pup named Scooby -Doo was really going
for a laugh. Now, the first episode, a bicycle
built for Boo, where Shaggy's bike is stolen,
and that leads to mystery, and it turns out it's
a counterfeiter. When the cloppy green ghost
roared at our heroes, out of his mouth came another
little cloppy green ghost head that would go,
yeah! Stinkweed was interesting because I mean
here's a plant as the villain and it's difficult
to portray stench in a medium that is sight and
sound but there's no stink to it. We had a totem
pole monster from an Indian reservation. We had
a cheese monster and also a frog villain. mean
beat that yeah I mean the villains in this show
were all over the place but they had good villains
it didn't it wasn't one of those it wasn't like
they were they were trying to bore you each villain
was different and each very much had its funny
moments All right, we're gonna run into the gags
here and Obviously Fred's Freddy's always blaming
red herring for every mystery And red shows up
or corresponds with Freddy and says he didn't
do it Ironically the two times he didn't blame
red were the only gang the only times the gang
caught Mr. Dilton in the episode the spirit of
rock and roll It was actually him and this bike
disappeared in night of the boogity biker Breaking
the oh, yeah breaking the fourth wall during
and after every mystery They broke the fourth
wall on this show more times than I can count
I lost count after the first three Yeah Which
obviously is something that this group? Like
to do since they carry it with them into you
know Tiny Toons and Animaniacs and do a lot of
the same stuff. So that's another aspect that
I like about the show Freddy questioning certain
people and that person would out there answer
at him Because obviously he was wrong Whenever
Velma says jinkies someone would say Velma said
jinkies it must be a clue on some occasions They
would say Velma spoke before it referencing her
Quietude on some occasions Velma's reaction is
for other reasons and on once And on one occasion,
no one reacted to her saying jinkies, so she
grabbed a horn and shouted, I said jinkies. I
remember that episode. That was funny. Did you
ever get that one? No, it wouldn't work. That
would have been funny to hear. Some other things
that we saw kind of carry throughout the series
the villain Always saying just like in the classic
scooby -doo. I would have gotten away with it,
too Except this time he said if it hadn't been
for you pesky kids in that puppy But occasionally
scooby -hedger and there was I was the one episode
where they were trying to figure out who was
Trying to scare away the black couple out of
their house the episode of I forget what the
name of it is uh... with jack the the handyman
at the very end he said all right you know you
you kids and scubie sitting right next to him
scubie just sticks his tongue out the sticks
his tongue out at him he goes oh yeah and and
your puppy i actually have a screenshot of that
uh... scubie laughing at a joke occasionally
throughout the series then stopping and saying
i don't get it We had, of course, Shaggy and
Scooby always being afraid of a monster and then
Daphne saying there are no such thing as whatever
the monster was at that time. The news bumper
saying we interrupt the pub name Scooby -Doo
for this special announcement. Yeah, in the style
similar of Sesame Street's news flash bumpers
that would have had the newscaster reporting
on a minor thing that said happened in the episode
or that one of the running gags about to occur.
Before the obligatory chase sequence with the
monster one of the mystery ink members would
often halt the action after interrupting the
monster So as to turn on the appropriate chase
music from a convenient source such as carrying
a stereo Involves briefcase There was also a
record player. I believe there's a whole bunch
of other stuff During the musical chase sequences
mystery even the monster would stop and running
long enough to dance for a bit before continuing
Which I always thought was kind of cool seeing
the different state different dance moves Yeah,
yeah, what's the next one? The what like obviously
with Daphne and her her character, you know when
they're checking out an empty building She'd
scream and everyone would would ask her what's
wrong and she'd just be complaining about her
getting her clothes dirty Or that it's too dusty
for stuff like that would happen throughout the
show Also the gang disguising themselves and
performing a comedic skit eventually confusing
the monster trying to I mentioned that earlier
I always thought that was funny Yeah You had
many instances throughout the show where scooby
or even some of the other characters would would
not do anything without one or more scooby snacks
And of course the scooby snacks coming in ridiculous
flavors such as pizza flavor or marshmallow One
where scooby says zucchini squid, yuck But but
And of course after eating the scooby snack like
that scooby would uh would hug himself and then
turn into a rocket and blast off and then he
would float Yeah, flows float lazily down into
Shaggy's arm and then Shaggy of course. Okay.
I'm ready. I Liked it I actually liked it. I
was going to say I liked it when Shaggy... Yeah,
they give him a Commander Cool personality. They
give Scooby... They give... Yeah, they give him
a Commander Cool personality, and Scooby takes
the Scooby snack, but he's mellow -mutt, and,
you know, he blasts off into the sky, and then
he comes back down, and Commander Cool, you know,
asks him, are you ready now? Shaggy and Scooby
eating ridiculous combos of food such as peanut
butter and hot dog sandwiches. scooby's nose
is removable in the episode is the story stick
yogi baron makes a cameo appearance in the beginning
of the episode well i'll have to go back and
look at that i did not know i didn't i didn't
know that you know i don't know that episode
again uh... we have two bits of trivia one is
the most original production staff for the show
including producer tom roger left the project
after the first season they went to warner brothers
to restart uh... they're long More abound animation
department their first project there was tiny
tune adventures in 1990 the series and the films
that feature Freddy Prince jr. Marked the only
times that the character of Freddy Jones has
been voiced by someone else other than Frank
Welker Yes, yes, I didn't even know the the adult
version of of scooby was of Freddy was was mr.
Welker But yeah. He doesn't just do animals.
You need to rephrase that. That doesn't sound
very redeeming quality. We are not responsible
for what he does. He doesn't just do the voices
of animals. That's a little bit better. And on
that note, I think... All right, um, well the
last segment needed one of these Cuz that just
came out so wrong and I would like to point I
would like to point out I'd like to point out
that Tooncast and the geek cast radio network
are not responsible for anything Kevin Thompson
says on this podcast So we're gonna move into
the music segment take it away drunk professor
All right mushroom man The music in the show
we had a lot of rock and roll style of songs
Specifically about the monster of the week that
were played during the chase scene in each episode
which kept the action going Similar to the second
season episodes of scooby -doo. Where are you?
Unlike previous versions of the show However,
the kids were often aware of the music being
played like we talked about breaking the fourth
wall They're having turned it on themselves in
many occasions and would dance for a bit along
with the ghost monsters before continuing with
the chase Glenn Kennedy would often animate the
characters dance cycles himself. So he was a
very hands -on guy The show's theme song featured
lyrics by series creator Tom Ruger and music
by composer John Debney Also bore a similarity
to the intro song from Little Shop of Horrors
The music is almost always in a 1950s rock and
roll style. Yes, and we are not going to read
the song look You haven't put the song lyrics
in the script people. I'm like well i i i know
them by heart uh... you want to know what i thought
mike would start singing the song lyrics never
have uh... no i don't think so uh... but i will
uh... the second since i pull it up i will play
mister ruger had to say about the uh... about
the music here it is I had been working on Scooby
a number of years, and once a pup named Scooby
Doo was developed, I was given the opportunity
to produce it, and this was going to be my first
producing job at Hanna -Barbera. And, you know,
I wanted to do a good job. I wanted to make the
characters fun and alive, and I wanted to make
the show distinctive, and we were going for a
distinctive look. And then we wanted to bring
back something that had been... dropped for the
past few seasons, which were the musical rumps.
It's time for the chase. Start the music, Scoob.
We call them Scooby Rump. And that's when, in
the middle of a chase scene, we start playing
some rock and roll music. And while, really,
the chase is supposed to just be going on, our
gang can't resist going into sort of wild dances.
Let's boogie! What I liked about the dancing,
we filmed some of the people at Hanna -Barbera
at the time doing these dances. And if you watch
some of the romps, you'll see Freddie and Scooby
and the gang pretty much imitating some of that.
We wanted to get a real distinctive sound. And
since we're basing the show as if it were taking
place in the early 60s, we decided to go with
a girl duet group. for the music soundtrack.
So, for the first time, I think, at Hanna -Barbera,
we had background music that contained vocals
in it. It was like... If you have an opportunity
to use something from your past, go ahead. So,
when I was a very little kid, my dad would come
in, say goodnight, and... He would do this bit
where he would take his fingers and go on the
top of the bed. And this would like... Because
I knew at the end of it he was going to tickle
me. And so I'd just be screaming and hiding under
the covers. And it wasn't real terror, it was
just like, I know he's going to tickle me, oh
my gosh! So that little jingle that I must credit
my father with that turned into... scooby -doo
-dee -doo -dee -doo -dee -doo scooby -doo -dee
-doo Yeah, that was that was Yeah, that's funny.
I mean you can tell I mean, I don't know what
else other than like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs
and this that Tom Ruger has has had time in but
you can tell the the The stuff that he puts into
his shows whether he's just directing or producing
or writing Oh, yeah, no doubt show and like it
was said the music it was just it was so awesome
It fit the show and I believe it was in something
that Kevin read earlier You know even though
the kids had like 80 style stuff in the in the
episode What is it? Yeah, but excuse me the schnook
who took my comic book where shaggy is going
to buy the the uh... very first edition what
limited edition you know we three left in the
world commander cool comic he he pays twenty
five dollars from like all my god this is so
much money but it's worth it you know so it's
kinda like mix the two decades between fifties
and sixties and and and eighties which i liked
other really isn't that much else to say about
music so i think We're going to move on with
Scooby. Scooby's like chicken and oat. He won't
budge. I bet I could change his mind with a Scooby
snack. Scooby snack? Catch. Give him two Scooby
snacks. Alright, it is time for the popularity
reception and where you can see it today, the
legacy segment. It actually won a, well, it was
nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding
Program for William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, Tom
Hager, Ray Patterson, Lane Reacher, Bill Mathany,
and Laren Bright. Which, surprisingly, yeah,
Pup Named Scooby -Doo nominated for an award.
Yeah, I was surprised. It's good that it was
nominated for an award because it wasn't one
of the shows at the time that was breaking down
the ratings doors for animated, for kids stuff
at all from 88 to 90. There was a lot of shows
that were out doing it ratings -wise, but it's
good to see that the effort that everybody put
into it was rewarded, at least with a nomination
there. And moving into the DVD releases, there
are seven volumes. Volumes one through five have
four episodes each. Volumes six and seven have
five episodes each. And then there's the complete
first season, which has 13 of the 30 episodes,
and the complete second and third. Well, this
says second and third seasons. On the actual
disc case, it says, Second third and fourth seasons
which has 17 the remaining 17 Cartoons out of
the 30 um as far as the DVDs go as people have
heard throughout this episode. I've been playing
Clips from Tom Ruger that is from the special
feature on the first season set Coolsville USA
interactive map visit the places where monsters
and mysteries wreak havoc Enjoy fabulous feature
X. There's also a pencil test animatic of an
alternate show open And that's pretty much it
for special features on the second disc There
is are on the on the second third and fourth
season disc there really isn't anything at all
There's just the other episodes which kind of
sucks Actually, there is one that there's a bonus
episode party Artie from uh... shaggy and scooby
-doo get a clue series what that why the hell
would you put up all about my fucking cartoon
that sucks god that one shaggy did it it's one
of the new ones uh... it was after uh... get
a clue or not uh... it was after it was after
what's new scooby -doo and shag yeah stupid pieces
of shit uh... Currently as far as a film adaptation
currently a third scooby film is in production
titled scooby -doo the mystery begins loosely
based on This series is both a prequel and a
sequel to the previous films The film will be
aired on television and released direct -to -video.
It will not be released to theaters like its
predecessors Just to give you a little information
on that that the scooby -doo the mystery begins
um some of the voices in that you got frank welker
actually doing the voice of a scooby -doo uh
huh um you got what's that that's disturbing
mr. messick is no longer with us so i'm aware
of that but i'm sure frank welker's about the
best guy to try to you know emulate it yeah um
you have obviously you need a got a new couple
other new guys got nick a guy named nick pilatus
uh... doing shaggy uh... i don't recognize a
lot of the other names gary chocke is doing one
of uh... the characters in there uh... that names
yeah gary chocke does a lot of the optimus prime
stuff and some other transformer stuff uh...
so you know it's listed on imdb has completed
uh... so i don't know i think they should have
gotten uh... the live action cast to do voice
for it if they were going to do that because
Okay, we all know Casey Kasem is God when it
comes to Shaggy. Absolutely. Alright, but, but
Matthew Lillard did come close second in those
live -action films. Yeah, he did actually. To
nailing Shaggy's voice down. So I don't understand
why they wouldn't have gone that route, of course,
other than the fact that, you know, Freddie Prinze
Jr. and What's -Her -Nuts Michelle Geller are
high -paid Actors and actors star Michelle killer.
Yeah. Yeah So, um, did we ever ranking for this
one? I didn't know it was not it wasn't ranked
what? You stupid fucking idiots right and That
there's a reason for that what's the reason Because
it's not as good as all the other ones that they're
I'm always going for a first. Yeah. Whatever.
All right. Yeah. You know, you know, I don't
know. I guess the reason that I find that Frank
Welker doing the voice of Scooby just doesn't
fit. Yes. Mike, I will agree with you that, you
know, Mr. Messick is no longer with us. I think
they could have found somebody. I don't know
why they do that. Who's the drunk one? and the
legacy stuff. If you like the show, if you see
it on Cartoon Network and you're like, oh, what
is this? And you sit down and watch an episode.
The DVDs are available. You're probably better
off finding them online. The second, third, and
fourth 2Disc set was just released a couple of
months ago. Actually, let me look at the thing
we have here on the script. Where is it? Dammit,
it was released March 17th of this year and the
first season was released March 18th of last
year But I found it was very hard to find the
first season in stores. So I actually just got
lucky finding it at my local Target when I was
looking for the newer release of the second third
and fourth season But I would find them online
So yeah, I think that's pretty much it for this
episode. I think we're gonna go into some ads
maybe. I don't know what Steve has in store for
the episode. I'm not sure if we're gonna do anything.
And this is what I have for Kevin before we go
into the closing. Do we have any final thoughts
on a pup named Scooby -Doo? Let Deanna go first.
Why? So I can fade in and out and yell into the
mic again? Yes. I missed the show. I wish it
had gone a little bit longer. But you know, that's
the way the cookie crumbles, as it were. It was
a great show for me. Fade in, fade out, fade
in. That's my point exactly. Boy, the description
for this show on iTunes is going to rock. between
the drunk bastard and the faded and out guy hell
yeah i'm gonna have a fun time writing up this
description for the itunes feed uh... uh... you
have any other thoughts before here you really
didn't finish my god What about you drunk boy?
I just got two final thoughts well three. I like
like I said before some good parts about it I
like that. It was a little more comedic. I like
that. They made fun of themselves and then the
only two other things I like that scrappy was
not in it and the last thing Actually, I gotta
I gotta wish Mike good luck tonight because he
was expressing some concern off air about some
effects the mushrooms So hopefully he's not on
the toilet all night. Eww, you smug son of a...
Looks like I won't be the only one having problems
with stand -ass motherfuckers. Shut the hell
up. Anyways, for those, like I said before in
the legacy segment right before this, for those
of you who wish the show could have gone on longer,
or for those of you who want to watch the show
without having to deal with Cartoon Network only
airing it once a fucking day, During the week
they are on DVD and it is a nice addition to
a DVD collection And I'm very glad that I have
them on DVD now, and I don't have I don't have
to search my TV to find an episode of I want
to watch it Overall I think it is the best scooby
series that has been done since Where are you?
The new ones I just can't get into them uh...
as far as a tune cast programming note we may
or may not get to scooby -doo where are you i'm
not sure if we're gonna have an episode on that
uh... if we do i'm probably gonna have like thousands
and thousands of scrappy clips just to rub it
in kevin's face i will be doing that episode
i guess will this is a binding contract once
you said yeah i'll be a host that's it you're
you're a host for life all right well i'll come
prepared exactly Bernie, I didn't see any fine
print. Well, you're a special guest co -host,
but since he pretty much begged me to be on the
show and is pretty much telling me off air in
Skype saying, you know, you need to stop being
on all the GCR and podcasts. You need to share
the love. Yeah, okay. I don't care about me being
on it. I just don't want you to get burned out
from doing six different shows. Yeah, it works.
