About this Episode

Steve Megatron and Mike the Birdman Dodd break down the current landscape of film franchises being rebooted or retconned. They discuss how movies like Halloween and the Terminator series are discarding previous sequels to start fresh, and explore the challenges of managing cinematic universes. The conversation also touches on potential for future television adaptations, the changing nature of comedy films, and the difficulty of rebooting older projects in the current cultural climate.

You're tuned in to Steve Megatron on Altered

Geek. Hello, and welcome to Altered Geek. I'm

your host, Steve Megatron Phillips, and in this

episode I'm joined by... Mike the Birdman Dodd

from ThisWeekendGeek .net. Hello, you glorious

bastards. So this week we thought it would be

fun to talk about films and... Not just any films,

films that have come back from the dead and basically

erased their sequels or at least from a given

sequel and I thought it was kind of fitting with

the fact that we're getting a new Terminator

movie and a new Halloween movie where they're

completely disregarding the sequels like Terminator

since Terminator 2 is Actually the one that takes

place before this one and Halloween they're going

right back to the first Halloween but taking

place decades later and I thought it was kind

of neat that they're they're basically wiping

out all of the bad sequels and Basically continuing

it properly or wiping out as well the the bad

reboots Including Terminator and Halloween which

is both had bad reboots But I thought it was

kind of interesting. Those two specifics, at

least, seem to be the interesting ones in that

they're bringing back, for Halloween you have

Jimmy Lee da Curtis coming back to... Play her

Laurie. Yep. Yeah, she was playing the original

Laurie Strode all the way back in 1979 bringing

her back as the same character disregarding disregarding

the original hollow Disregarding h2o the original

Halloween too. This is literally a sequel to

the original Halloween So there are now three

films called Halloween. There's Halloween night

in 1979. There's the Rob Zombie Reboot from nine

from 2007 and now there's this one though the

reboot This one is a sequel to the 1979 one and

you can ignore the 1981 Halloween 2 which this

series actually James Rolfe the angry video game

nerd just did a chronologically confused about

this movie a little while ago It's just it's

so dumb. I mean, I'm kind of glad that they're

coming back to the Halloween franchise, but Michael

Myers To me has always been a less interesting

character than say Jason Voorhees Although that

series I don't think we'll see a reboot anytime

soon because there's this huge lawsuit going

on right now Between Shawn s Cunningham and Victor

Miller the guy that wrote the original screenplay.

So Anything having to do with that property is

currently on ice and just pretty much screwed

over the video game where they can no longer

develop new content, but that's a side story.

Other movies that have already done this in the

past actually can think of one notable in the

80s Evil Dead Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 because

Evil Dead 2 was like a quasi sequel slash reboot

to the original Evil Dead. Even though it's supposed

to be a sequel. It's the exact same setup and

Ash Williams just happens to be in the same setup

No, he ain't going back into the woods after

that although the beginning of the movie shows

him getting possessed by the spirits of the forest

and yet he comes back to the woods with his girlfriend

Linda and Basically reboots the events of the

first movie or retcons it or explains it in like

30 seconds. I don't know. It's been a while since

I've seen it Another movie that you mentioned

so we got Halloween What was the other one you

mentioned? Terminator yeah, so this is a series

that's also really all sorts of screwed up because

the series should have ended at Judgment Day

back in all the way back in 1991 and then we

got Terminator 3 Rise of Machines in what, 2003,

I think it was, and then we had Terminator Salvation

in 2008 or 2009, and then we got Terminator Genesis

in 2015 or 16, and now we're getting Terminator

6, which is the sequel to Terminator 2, disregarding

everything that's happened thus far. Oh my god,

maybe it's time you know what some franchises,

you know what guys as much as we love these characters

and ideas Just reboot everything or let the franchise

die Yeah, they're and they're they're actually

intending on the Terminator movie being a reboot

for a new trilogy, but they're using the original

Sarah Connor to do so Yeah, they brought back

Linda Hamilton, which is great. My guess is that

they're going to take her and Arnold's Terminator

out in this movie. Probably. And they're going

to upgrade the aging T -800 and they're going

to have the guy that played Ghost Rider in Agents

of S .H .I .E .L .D. be the new Terminator. I

wanna see a new Terminator because I love that

franchise. In fact, I actually just got one of

those retro action figures, those three and three

quarter inch ones. I actually just got a T -800

Endo Skeleton tonight. I love this franchise.

I love time travel. I love robots, but maybe,

maybe guys, maybe it's time to let this go. It's

almost like that clip from The Last Jedi where...

Kylo Ren says, let the past die. Yeah, and it's

so unfortunate too. It's sad to say that, being

that we love our nostalgia and we love the products

that came from them, but when you look at that

movie, and it's taken me some thought to kind

of look at the movie. I hated that they killed

Luke in the movie, not to jump on the Star Wars

bandwagon there, but the same time that... That

film symbolized the fact that it was throwing

away everything that was old and starting fresh

just in the sense that, you know, in the first

scene when Luke throws the lightsaber or when

Snoke says to Kylo, you know, just stop wearing

that mask and then he breaks it and, you know,

the mask thing stopped, you know, stopped being

like Vader and then... he does the whole, you

know, let the past die. And they kind of move

on and it's kind of almost fresh ground and Luke

dies and, you know, Leia won't be back. So, I

mean, it's almost like a complete reboot at that

point. And that's kind of what they're needing

to do with a lot of these other franchises instead

of kind of grasping onto the same original characters

created new. Yeah, like they're in the... Passing

the torch movie so to speak I mean if we'd looked

at the original Star Wars trilogy to briefly

talk about this If they'd went with the expanded

universe novels, which had been which had been

written so many years ago, I Can't imagine them

doing anything but say the throng trilogy by

Timothy's on which is what everybody wanted to

see But they kind of touched upon that in Star

Wars rebels. I can't imagine These care, I mean

unless they made movies right away Thrawn could

be back and their new their new television series

it takes place after Return of the Jedi from

Just because if you remember in rebels at the

very end they showed Sabine older Yeah, and Ezra

and Thrawn were on that ship, you know that that

whole thing that that went warp speed out, you

know, light speed out, and they were still alive.

So, like, there's that element that they can

still bring them both back. They would just be

a little bit older, but I think that that opened

the door for the series of after episode six.

Well, I'm kind of glad that they're doing new

characters now, because as much as I love the

adventures of Luke, Han, and Leia, I am ready

to see new people step into the Star Wars universe,

I think. Well, I think Rebels kinda did that.

Gave that to us. Oh, yeah. And I think that's

why Rebels was so awesome to watch. I mean, yeah,

they had nostalgia sprinkled in. Like, you had

a Lando scene, you had a Leia scene, you had

a Darth Vader. But primarily, I mean, and you

had Darth Maul, but primarily it was all new

characters. Yeah, it didn't rely on nostalgia.

Overwhelming to keep you invested in the franchise

whereas I think franchises like Halloween and

Terminator are Counting on that nostalgia to

put those asses back into the seats, especially

Terminator. I like James Cameron, but holy shit,

dude It's stop. Well, he's gonna work He's kind

of Looney Tunes anyway, just because of his whole

thing of, I've got four Avatar movies planned.

I was just about to say that, why don't you go

finish those Avatar movies you started back in

2009, you friggin' loser. Yeah, I know, and he's

like, well, I was waiting for technology, dude,

you're gonna be dead before they get it. Develop.

Yeah, exactly. I'm sorry. We we have holograms

right now. What more do you need? Yeah, that

was kind of my whole thing. Like he was like,

I have some exciting things with the next four

Avatar movies. And it's like, how about you just

make the next one and then worry about the rest?

Like it doesn't take, you know, almost. I mean,

it's been nine years. It doesn't take nine years

to make a new movie of something that's a brand

new franchise like. When you're reprising something

like, you know, Die Hard or Halloween or Terminator

or Lethal Weapon or something, you know, like

just like that Beverly Hills cop that's never

come to fruition for number four. That was supposedly

in production years ago. You know what? That

makes me think how long until until franchises

like that get touched again. Like, it would be

hard to reboot Die Hard. They were, well, Die

Hard, they've tried to soft reboot it. And I

guess there's that, they're still trying to do

that year one thing where they do the young John

McClane and old John McClane, like where they're

both fighting the same person in different eras.

Not a time travel thing, just a different, you

know. Time traveling John McClane sounds awesome.

I would be down with that honestly, but mixed

fifth element with Die Hard. So you get, you

know. you get young cop John McClane against

the character and then you get old John McClane

against the same villain so it's kind of an interesting

twist but I don't know I think those franchises

are better left alone and I would rather instead

of them reprising and bringing back all these

series like as a new movie franchise or rebooting

the franchise or trying to bring back the old

actors to do this stuff again I think that they

need to just leave them alone or do what they've

been doing create them as television shows One

show that I think might work as a television

show, depending on how you approach it, is the

Alien franchise, because the Alien franchise

has never been fully fleshed out. They've tried

to do it with Prometheus and Alien Covenant,

and those movies do okay as prequels. But if

you gave me a show without Ripley, just maybe

a whale, if you gave me a company of space marines,

and their job was to hunt aliens, and they're

looking, or they went renegade against the Weyland

-Yutani Corporation, that could be really friggin'

awesome. Really, really expensive, I'm gonna

imagine. But that could be amazing television

if done, if you only did 13 episodes, or even

like six or something, maybe 10. You could do

some really fantastic television with that number

of episodes. You'd probably get a bigger budget

out of it. You hear that, Netflix? Yeah, come

on, Netflix. Well, I think Fox owns that, so

technically Disney owns it then. Oh my god. You

could have Aliens and Kingdom Hearts! You can

have Aliens and the Avengers. Oh my god, that

would be so freaking bad. Or Star Wars. You know,

maybe that's the Beyond universe that they always

talk about, that Snoke came from, that nobody

knows anything about, maybe because they've got

the aliens there, the Xenomorphs are there, and

that's why nobody survives. If I may plug something,

years and years ago on the show I work on, Terrible

Warriors, I actually did an alien Star Wars crossover.

It was called Star Wars Leviathan. The Empire

had found uh an alien queen so they captured

it they're working on it on a star destroyer

obviously shit goes wrong they had infected wookies

with aliens they infected a rancor so i had a

rancor alien queen rampaging through a star destroyer

that was falling into a brown dwarf because the

crew was dead so there's no one to maintain the

orbit and uh yeah it was insane and then it ended

with one of my droids betraying the entire role

playing group saying, well, I got the data I

needed. See you bastards later. And he ejected

in an escape pod. And all my players and all

my players are like, you son of a bitch, you

left us to die. It was amazing. It was the first

betrayal we ever had in that role playing game.

But it was an amazingly fun show. Anyway, um,

alien seems to be almost immune from this. Like

we give Terminator and Halloween crap. but Alien,

because it's treated its prequels fairly well,

not so much its sequels, because you look at,

because Alien Resurrection, basically, it carried

on from Alien 3 saying, oh yeah, Ripley died

on Fiona 161, but she's back. That, I think,

was kind of a cop -out to resurrect her character

via cloning with memories of the original Ripley,

and like, just leave the character dead. But

Alien could survive without Ripley, if done correctly.

I mean, there was a series of comics by Dark

Horse that had Aliens, Colonial, Marines, there's

been Aliens versus Predator, which that's a series

that should work on paper, but has never worked

in movies, period. Hell, that's another series

that's getting a reboot this year, Predator.

You don't need, that's a series just... The stories

don't even need to be connected. Nope. And that's

just the perfect series for that. Yeah, it's

just it's a monster in a new situation. Make

it interesting. We don't need Arnold Schwarzenegger.

We don't need Danny Glover. Just give me a new

Yatcha hunting people. Maybe an alien shows up

as an Easter egg. And I'm OK with that. Monster

movies almost seem to be exclusive for. You can

use them in reboots because you don't really

need to connect them. You just need to tell the

same story over again, but make it interesting.

Like I know when they tried to reboot the mummy

with Tom Cruise, that didn't go over so well.

That movie was so stupid. They tried to set up

this new dark universe. No, you don't start with

the mummy. You start with Dracula and Frankenstein

and you make it interesting or the Wolfman or

some shit like that. And they had the other guy

be Jekyll and Hyde. And I'm just thinking, you

know what, you have a cool idea, but you don't

you make one good movie and then you build a

cinematic universe. And I kind of wonder, everybody's

trying to copy Marvel, but nobody wants to play

the long game. Well, it took Marvel a long time

to do that ten years ten years and if you want

something to be successful You can't do it in

three. You need to take the time to do it in

minimum five And I think DC finally learned with

with a Wonder Woman and it appears Aquaman is

gonna be halfway decent. So they're learning

very slowly. I mean, look how many times Batman

has been rebooted because when you think about

it, outside of the the Dark Knight trilogy, they

never reference the other movies except for Batman

Returns because Batman forever doesn't mention

the pain or doesn't mention the Penguin or Catwoman.

No, actually, no. Wait, Chase Meridian kind of

does. She says, do I need to be wearing a leather

cat suit? I think she says that. But even still,

that's an Easter egg at best. So yeah, the Batman

movies have done this. And nobody bitches there.

Well, look at Spider -Man. Yeah, that's another

series of movies. It's not even as bad as Marvel's

or Fox's X -Men that have done the soft reboot.

Look how long we had Wolverine. it was the same

actor, or whenever possible, they brought back

the same crew. So I mean, that's really kind

of the first instance of a cinematic universe.

Just not done as cohesively as what Marvel did.

Yeah, it wasn't as super linked together other

than them being sequels. And you're absolutely

right. With that, the X -Men first class was

a way to do a soft reboot right. And even they

kind of screwed that up with X -Men Apocalypse.

And I wouldn't say it was a bad screw -up, but

that movie wasn't good. Because there's a wonderful

video, I can't remember who made it, but if you

look up X -Men movie timeline on YouTube, it's

like 15 minutes and they try and explain all

the different points where history diverges from

the main timeline, where it's its own separate

reality. Which it does a lot. which yeah the

x -men universe is confusing as you know and

it's unnecessarily confusing although they solve

those problems in deadpool 2 spoiler um he goes

back in time and kills the original deadpool

i think um he goes back in time and he uh kills

ryan reynolds or something he kills ryan reynolds

before he can do the green lantern movie when

he's holding the script that that's why there

was that whole thing between wonder brothers

and uh um and Ryan Reynolds where they said,

you know, we'll never work with you again. No,

they were really funny over social media, but

they said something to him about it. You know,

like we really heard about it. And then Ryan

Reynolds puts you should have put a ring on it

or whatever. And they said we tried. And then

he says something about a new ring or something

like that. And it was it was just really funny.

But. yeah I mean it was it was just a funny back

and forth but it was because of that ending another

movie franchise that did a soft reboot ish was

Friday the 13th back in 2009 they referenced

the first movie where Jason sees his mom killed

and then it's like they amalgamate the first

four movies Into the into the 2009 like there's

no Tommy Jarvis for example, but Jason's been

killing people. He's known to be a problem in

the area. They say keep out of the woods. There's

something back there and Obviously hilarity ensues

when Jason kills a bunch of teenagers out to

party by Crystal Lake That's a series. Once again,

it's a monster monster movies. You can reboot

just different scenario idea. I mean Freddy Krueger

tried when they did the remake back in 2010,

I wanna say, but they made him a sympathetic

character and they screwed that up. Not that

Jackie Earl Haley was a bad Freddy, just, mm.

It wasn't a very good movie, though. No, they

took Nancy and somehow you screwed up what Heather

Lankenkamp had made as a fantastic performance.

and just made the character of Nancy utterly

friggin' useless. But yeah, I mean, monster movies,

I think, are the strongest candidates for reboots

that you can have the most fun with. Like I said,

you can make a new Frankenstein. It doesn't need

to reference anything else. I mean, I've only

seen the original Frankenstein, so I don't know

how the original ties in to say Bride of Frankenstein

or Son of Frankenstein. But yeah, just use the

monster in a different different setting like

we said predator Predator 2 very briefly mentions

the operation in Central America with Dutch This

new predator movie seems to imply that the predators

are genetically engineered or something and there

they are aliens But they're improved somehow.

So that looks stupid. They're human xenomorph

combos Yeah, so I don't know, I'm really thinking

here, what other movies are reboot safe? Hell,

we - Look at Star Trek. It did a soft reboot.

I mean, granted, it may not have done as well

as it should have, beyond that first movie, although

the third one was better than the second one.

But it still did a soft reboot by taking someone

from the original continuity, going back in time,

screwing up an event, and it diverted. I think

the problem with the Star Trek reboots is the

second movie, In the Darkness, without a doubt,

because there was no need to retread the Khan

story. If they'd taken a risk like they did with

Star Trek Beyond where they told an original

story, I think people would have been more invested

other than, oh, look, it's Benedict Cumberbatch.

Who's that? Oh, what the hell did they call his

character John something or other? John Harriman.

Like, screw off, I know that's con. Don't play

me for a fool. Well, it's like the long game

that they're trying to play now with the Avengers

4. They're like, just because a character has

a sequel movie coming out doesn't mean they're

coming back from the dead. Yeah, like, screw

you. You're not killing Chadwick Boseman as T

'Challa. It's not going to happen. You're not

going to take out Spider -Man. You're not taking

out, you know, Black Panther. You're not taking

out Doctor Strange. You're not taking out...

Black widow or some well the original Avengers

are all live. Yeah like but but they you know,

essentially they you know, there's even Star

-Lord who's gone like, you know, you're not taking

him out either. He's gonna be the next movie

Yeah, I mean like they're I don't know and they're

saying like well it could take place before this

movie and it's like no you're just you're just

trying to anchor chain to try and divert us and

I mean, we'll see when the next movie comes out,

but I'm almost wondering if, because it's going

to be time travel, if they're going to divert

the entire thing with Thanos in the first place

at the Battle of New York since that's where

they're going and essentially sacrifice the original

Avengers and that. Yeah, and that's not a bad

idea and that but then again that creates so

many quote -unquote paradox problems But it's

Marvel their writers are smart. They won't create

anything truly stupid. It's all right. They got

dr. Strange. He can fix it He's got the stone

exactly the eye of Agamotto fixes all so one

way or another The Marvel movies are gonna be

fine. Um I'm trying to think of other franchises

that potentially are reboot proof or reboot friendly.

I was actually going to say, even the Terminator

movies, if you take the core concept and redid

it, I might be okay with that. The problem is

the 1984 movie is so good you can't touch it.

Even the sequel, Terminator 2, is so good you

can't touch it. I think this Terminator 6 is

a mistake. I don't think so. I think Genesis

was really poorly put together, like they essentially

did what Into Darkness did for Star Trek in Genesis.

They retread, yeah. It was a retread and they

just reversed roles on things and that's why

it was such a blatant slap in the face and I

think that that's why people had such a problem

with it was because they realized it and it was

more obvious than Into Darkness was. But at the

same time, Think that this new movie will be

a proper passing of the torch because you'll

actually see an end to the t -800 with Arnold

You'll see you know what happens to Sarah Connor

Beyond Judgment Day you won't have John Connor

Yeah, and that's something that kind of bugs

me too. I'm like cuz Terminator was always Sarah

Connor trying to protect her son John so he can

grow into the resistance leader, but maybe it

was supposed to be her Maybe because I know they

talk about that in the Sarah the Sarah Sarah

Sarah Connor Chronicles Like you see her be so

much more capable than John John becomes capable

over time and I really wish they hadn't given

up on the Salvation trilogy because that was

supposed to be a trilogy set in the future war

And Genesis had a really awesome opening with

them fighting their way to the time displacement

field and sending back Kyle Reese. Genesis had

some really cool ideas, but executed stupidly.

And impossible bad casting as well. I liked their

T -1000, that the Asian guy whose name I can't

remember. He was Storm Shadow, wasn't he, from

G .I. Joe? I think so. Yeah, I could see his

name in my head, but I can't pronounce it. But

yeah, I think Terminator, if you set a movie

in the future war, I think that could be rather

cool, because who doesn't love endoskeletons

and hunter killers and HKs? And maybe that'll

be part of what this movie is, because we have

an older Sir Conner, which would be about fitting

for that age of during that timeline. Yeah, I

guess as long as I don't bring back the whole

Genesis plot device, which they're not gonna

they're just gonna ignore it Plus you have James

Cameron is an executive producer and you have

the guy that did Deadpool Tim Miller, I think

directing and So I think it's gonna be a roundabout

a good movie You had mentioned this earlier in

the conversation I want to swing back to it literally

hot webs spider -man Everybody knows the origin

of Spider -Man. You could just do another sequel

with just another bad guy and almost another

actor in the suit if you really wanted to. I

mean, obviously now we have Tom Holland and the

Spider -Man homecoming universe, which is great.

And that's gonna be separate from Sony or something.

They say he'll have a less large part in the

MCU, but I guess now that... I don't know how

that's gonna work out. Disney has a deal to use

Spider -Man pretty much, but not necessarily

his Rose Gallery. Which is so stupid, but then

again, big deal. You don't get to use Doc Ock,

the Vulture, Venom, and Venom doesn't even, supposedly

there's an extra credit scene. I've heard it

on Reddit, so take this with a grain of salt.

That venom comes to New York after leaving San

Francisco looking to work at the Daily Bugle

and Peter says hi to him or something which I'm

sorry Tom Holland and Tom Hardy as I don't see

the dynamic not the original dynamic that you

got from the comics unless they're doing Some

ultimates thing which I don't know. But then

again, it's Marvel. They generally know what

they're doing They've only had me the weakest

movies in the MCU everybody forgets about anyway

Nobody talks about the Hulk and nobody talks

about Thor the Dark World and nobody talks about

Iron Man 3. You only remember the hits with Marvel.

So even if they make something crappy, who cares?

See, I didn't care for the first two Thor movies

or The Incredible Hulk. But for the rest of it,

I was kind of like, even Ant -Man, I didn't really

care for much either. I mean, it was entertaining

and fun, but it still wasn't my cup of tea. Ant

-Man is a guilty pleasure of mine. I like it

because it is funnier and I really think Paul

Rudd does a really fantastic job. But anyway,

keeping tracks here. Another series that did

well with its reboot and should continue on.

is the Power Rangers movie, which now that Hasbro

owns the Power Rangers franchise in whole, they've

already said they're gonna develop more movies,

whether we get another soft reboot or whether

they continue with the cast they had from the

original one. I think they'll go in a new direction.

Probably. But I almost think that's gonna be

better because we might not see some of the same,

I agree, some of the things that they did with

it was better than what we've seen at certain

points. specifically like they've kind of actually

had people that looked like they were teenagers

and not to knock the original cast because I

love the original show but I think I think that

a lot of it fit like the the the actual real

people more you know you had the Blue Ranger

who is you know had a disability and you had

people who were, you know, seem more like people,

they just didn't get fleshed out as much. However,

I found the Goldar and the Zords thing a bit

off -putting, and it wasn't just the designs,

like, it was something just about the way they

went about it. Like, I'm not saying it has to

be like Goldar, like in the original series,

where he's like, and you know, it looks just

kind of like a goofy muppet, but... or like a

knockoff Chewbacca with like gold armor on. But

I think there was a lot of missed opportunity

in that, but I did enjoy the fact that they made

Rita the ex Green Ranger and made them all kind

of aliens and Bryan Cranston and you know the

whole thing with the ship and how he got stuck

in the containment tube. I was just thinking,

if they want to take it in a new direction, I

wonder if they'll piggyback on the current season,

like whether we'll see Beast Morphers or maybe

the movie will be the new introduction to that

season's Sentai or whatever. I don't know, there's

any number, I mean, with Hasbro money, they can

do whatever the hell they want with it. And I

would be okay, I'm just happy to see more movies.

I think part of the Power Rangers reboot movie

suffered. Not nearly enough in the suits too

much humanizing the movie should have been split

maybe 50 -50 But that's a complaint coming from

a Sentai fan. So whatever I kind of agree with

you. I would I would much rather have seen them

more in the suit then Then what we saw then what

we got and I think that's part of the problem

too. I because I really don't care about you

know, oh, so -and -so's grounded. Why is he sitting

in the truck with his dad? You know, wine, wine,

wine, blah, blah, blah. No, I wanna see Power

Rangers. You know, it's, I don't know. I think

that it could have been done differently is kind

of why. It wasn't a terrible movie and I don't

hate it, but it wasn't like something I would

go back out of my way to watch again. I thought

of one franchise just right now that should have

been an awesome reboot and... Unfortunately suffered

somewhat from bad directing and a bad script

Ghostbusters 2016 and I think the casting was

fine. I really do I just think it was a weak

script to begin with and With the nods to stay

puffed with Rowan was fine. Whatever But it just

wasn't Ghostbusters as a concept Should work

really well bad bad bad ghosts being fought off

by scientists with ghosts But with fantastical

equipment if they can make a cartoon series last

like five seasons There's no reason why we can't

have another Ghostbusters movie that should be

as successful why Ghostbusters 2016 didn't work

There's people that have written essays on this,

video essays. This topic's been covered to death,

but I'm surprised that franchise didn't go as

far as it did. Another franchise that's getting

the reboots, and I know you've talked about this

on GeekCast Radio before. We won't cover it super

in -depth here. Let's look at Thundercatch Roar,

for example. That's a reboot that went in a completely

different direction. Than what people expected

because we had the original thundercats in the

80s. We had the reboot 2011. I want to say and

Now we've got roar which we've seen Snippets

from I think like we've seen the trailer. I don't

know if we've seen any more I imagine fan of

the animation style that that guy that does a

Steven universe thing does I've never found any

of that to be it to me It's is it the same guy.

It's the same guy. Okay, so To me, I find that

animation style kind of meh. It's kind of a little

kiddy. Well, it's worse than Teen Titans Go,

but the series isn't going to be kiddy. It's

still going to be like they're going to try and

put their weird spin on it. And to me, this is

kind of why I don't, part of why I don't let

my kids watch standard television is because

one, I find Cartoon Network just puts out garbage.

or, you know, I feel like they slight the shows

that have an opportunity to have a better quality.

And when I say quality, I mean like better animation

style than what we got in the original and better

acting and better stories. And, you know, you

look at the reimagining of He -Man or the Thundercats

2011 or... Those various series are Young Justice.

Those were all awesome series. And then Culture

Network just kind of puts them on the death slot,

makes them disappear. And then they replace them

with, you know, like Teen Titans Go and Thunder

Kits Roar and, you know, things like that. And

to me, it just seems like it's an easier, lazier

way out. I think I'm one of the few people that

really loves Teen Titans Go, because I love the

absurd humor, but it's such a weird choice to

put superheroes in absurd situations. Well, see,

I liked the episode where they had that song

with the band, and then they had David Kay reprising

Beast Wars Megatron as the red dragon that was

trying to steal the song. I don't remember the

name of the episode, I just enjoyed it because

he was in it. They made some Transformers jokes

in it. They made like cyborg transformed to Optimus

Prime and Some of the stuff like that. So, I

mean it was really absurd, but it was fun, but

like Teen Titans Go I feel like is a totally

different entity where It just about anything

can go in it Which which I just got a thing in

there hasn't What's the Marvel equivalent of

Teen Titans Go? There was that Marvel infinity

show years ago Marvel superheroes And it was

goofy, but not as really out there as Teen Titans

go. See, I think DC, like just about anything

that comes from DC, and this is not even a bias,

I just find anything that comes from DC as far

as their animated stuff or their television series

to be far superior to Marvel's, whereas Marvel's

film universe is far superior to anything DC

puts out in the film universe. And so like...

not that the casting isn't good, it's just that

the implementation's crap. But Marvel has this

spot on streak with their live action films where

they're animated in their television stuff I

kind of find lacking. Yeah, and I don't particularly

know why. I mean, Marvel has the potential to

do so much more. I was actually just... Was just

thinking I mean think about all the spider -man

shows that have happened over the year. We've

had spider -man and his amazing friends spider

-man from the 1960s The MTV spider -man that

nobody talks about with Neil Patrick Harris when

we had the 1990s spider -man, too. Yep. We had

that we had the one from Spectacular we had the

one that had spider -man and the agents of shield

or whatever the hell was spider -man unlimited

Yeah, Spider -Man Unlimited. There's so many

series there, and I don't know, Super Heroes

is another genre that reboots either work or

they really don't. Or like Ninja Turtles or...

Ninja Turtles, they're supposedly another movie

in the works, and I wonder if it'll follow the

Platinum Dunes, I think, or the Michael Bay version

of the turtles. I think they're rebooting again.

I hope they're visual designer. listens to the

fans. It's not that the designs for the last

movie were terrible. They just weren't what I

wanted. And I'm not saying that as a backpedal

or as an apologist. It's just it wasn't what

I wanted. But I'm not pissy about it. Well, I

think their designs were kind of too far out

there and they looked really bad as far as like

CGI. And I'm not saying the Muppet versions of

where they're dressed in the costumes in the

90s was any better. But I found them more relatable

in the 90s one than I did in this one Mm -hmm

like and I don't have anything against the voice

Voices of any of them either like that didn't

bother me in the slightest It was just a lot

of it was the design and how much CG they used

whereas I think if they would have I mean, it's

the same thing with the the Transformers movies

they've Done all those five with Michael Bay

and they all were you know mediocre at best and

We had all this, you know, metal machine kibble

and then we get to see the trailer for Bumblebee

and They look good. They look good. They look

like they're they're more More like a one of

the toys or one of the animated series type style,

but it's kind of a nice meshing of the two And

it doesn't feel like this this garbage chute

Yeah, like I'm hoping the Transformers when they

reboot that universe. I'm hoping that goes well

Obviously, I hope they bring back Peter Cullen

as prime. I can't see why they wouldn't I didn't

be okay if they brought in Gary Chalk But I don't

know if we should do that right away. I kind

of wondered the after bumblebee I guess depending

on how well Bumblebee does, we'll decide how

quickly things get put in the motion. Well, I

guess they were supposed to have a movie coming

out next year as well, but they've shelved all

of the ideas for all future Transformers movies,

and they're moving ahead with the stuff for Mask

and for G .I. Joe and then going to worry about

Transformers after that. So I think they're going

to build on a universe with all of these franchises

involved. And they've already been doing that

on the IDW comic side. But they're gonna be doing

it more so in the film universe with a writing

pool So they're gonna try and do like the marvel

thing but do it with a bunch of different types

of franchises i'd be Okay with that because gi

joe is yet another franchise When you think about

it gi joe Revenge of cobra and gi joe retaliation

They had some characters From the first movie

carry over to the second but not many I was okay

with that if they rebooted GI Joe again GI Joe

is just it's a unit. That's all it ever needs

to be It can succeed as a standalone movie once

again You just need to transport the idea of

GI Joe in the something and if you can incorporate

that with mask and Transformers and all that

crap I think that'll be a fantastic film universe

which has the potential to rival Marvel if it's

handled properly, especially if you once again

you pick on the nostalgia nerds because there's

a lot of us in our 30s and 40s who spend a lot

of money on this crap and If we can get our kids

and stuff into interested in it. That's you know,

that's the big trick right there Can you get

the movie going public? Outside of us super nerds

into it and I think it's possible because the

ideas are cool hell if they reboot mask Man,

can you imagine what mask toys would look like

today? Oh, yeah with current tech. Holy crap.

My I'm getting a nerd boner just thinking about

it. Oh Frag um, but yeah, there's just so much

stuff that Could go right with this. I mean,

I hope they don't abandon micronauts. Hell. I

want to see wrong the space night still I think

I didn't do that. I don't I think that would

make a really cool animated movie but that's

just on my wish list there. Do you think of other

franchises that maybe deserve a reboot or are

reboot friendly? I think, no. I was gonna have

a really weird one and you'd never see it coming.

But I think with the right actor, I think you

could reboot this franchise and bring it back.

Any guesses on what I'm talking about? It's a

comedy movie from the 1980s and it's supernatural.

from the 1980s in Supernatural. No idea. Beetlejuice.

Yeah, I could see that. I think if you got the

right actor, especially with today's special

effects, and you've brought back Tim Burton,

you could do something really messed up and really

funny. Well, the thing is, is they've been trying

to do a Beetlejuice, too. It's just that Tim

Burton has been preoccupied with Disney films,

like Dumbo. Stop making crap and go make Beetlejuice

already. I know well I know and well the funny

thing is is he had Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton

in that movie See that okay? Like that's a franchise

that could work. I'm gonna think of other thing

um You could in well, I guess they've already

successfully rebooted lethal weapon Although

they've crap can the guy that played rigs Are

they gonna have, are they gonna kill the Riggs

character off? Well, they kind of quasi -killed

him in the mid -season, and when he comes back,

he's gonna be Sean William Scott from American

Pie. So, are they gonna, okay, so it's still

the same character? Same character, different

actor. Wow, okay, but then again, look how many

different Aunt Vivian's we had on Fresh Prince,

so. Okay. Like two, but still, I think it's gonna

be more jarring because there's a... totally

different personality and such a total shift.

Yeah, it's going to be a total shift. And I think

that's going to, I would have preferred that

they just wrote him out and created a new character

that was similar to Riggs, but not. But still,

Sean Williams Scott, I'm glad he's getting work.

Because he's one of my favorite actors. I love

that guy. He's so funny Like we couldn't do the

other guy anymore. So hey one job sure How would

you like to be rigs with the serial number scratched

off? Okay diet rigs if if you will Oh my God,

just a third of the calories. All the Stifler.

None of the pain. None of the pain, my God. I'm

trying to think of other franchises. You could

do Beverly Hills Cop because you don't need Eddie

Murphy. Well, that's the thing, too, is like

they've tried to do a series of it and it didn't

make it past the initial. Pitch or yeah, it will

they I guess they shot a pilot or something or

at least got one started and it didn't go anywhere

and then they were gonna do Beverly Hills cop

for and Eddie Murphy was gonna be involved like

he was gonna be involved with both I think he's

tied to it some way and like as a Some kind of

a producer owner of part of it or something because

like they won't make a move on it without him

mm -hmm and There was a production of Beverly

Hills Cop Four, supposed to be going on years

ago, and then nothing ever came out of it. Oh,

I just thought of another franchise that got

a reboot or remake this past year, but it didn't

go anywhere, Death Wish, with Bruce Willis. I

thought that was kind of dumb. I think, depending

on how you did it. I think that they should have

got a new, like got some other actor to do it.

Yeah, not Bruce Willis. He's getting a little

long in the tooth Yeah, I think everybody kind

of like he just does action movies just because

it's in his forte at this point I don't need

that. It's he needs a car payment. So he just

does them. Yeah. Well, I think he's like a new

boat um a movie that would Work if you got the

right director and if you still got Clint Eastwood

involved You could reboot the Dirty Harry movies.

That would be interesting. I think you could

pull that off, especially if you got the right

director, like Clint Eastwood, and you got the

right intense actor behind it. But you'd never

get the, come on punk, make my day. Yeah, see,

that's a moment you could never redo. You could

pay homage to it, but never redo that particular

scene. But that would be pretty badass. I'm thinking

here. Okay, that'll never happen. I was gonna

say, I like to see them make more goofy movies

like Delta Force, like Orion did back in the

80s. But Chuck Norris is crazy now, so. Well,

they did other, you know, like the old National

Lampoon films. Yeah, and those just depend, that's

a franchise that's built upon a name. You don't

need Chevy Chase. You don't need the Griswolds

anymore. But it's owned by somebody else and

they're not able to use the name. Like that's

why that vacation movie came out a number of

years ago. That was total garbage. Oh, and it

just had Randy Quaid in it? It didn't have any

of them in it. It was a total - Reboot, that's

right. It was a reboot, but it still had - Familiar

plot beans. Well, it still had Chevy Chase and

Beverly D 'Angelo in it. Just as a brief, you

know, they're the grandparents and they had the

guy from the office or the hangover movies. That's

right. I forgot about that. And Kelly from Married

with Children on there. I completely forgot about

that, wow. Yeah, I remember it. It was just terrible.

It was, I had to shut it off. I was like, it's

bad. Yeah, I think I have it on Blu -ray somewhere

or maybe it was one of the Blu -rays that got

stolen. Either way, I don't think I'm missing

out. No, it was terrible. I'm trying to think,

I'm thinking here, is there anything else that's

reboot friendly or reboot proof? I don't think

you could remake Caddyshack today. You couldn't

remake Caddyshack, you couldn't remake Animal

House. Well, there's a number of jokes that are

off -color. Oh God, in this political climate,

you could never make revenge of the nerds. It

will not happen. Oh, you'd get all kinds of...

Yeah. Yeah, it would cause an uproar. Yeah, there

would not be some very happy political groups

in this country and depending on what Whatever

side of the coin you fall on there's pros and

cons to this thing But it you know, it's funny

how many movies we watch from those days that

just get a pass Like Revenge of the Nerds like

Animal House Like all those things. I think it's

more people were aware of them In today's age,

today's generation, I think they would be getting

lambasted and destroyed, but it's the fact that

nobody remembers them. And so if you watch them

in your own privacy of your own home and speak

not of that film that must not be named, then

you're in the safe zone. Yeah, because there

are some scenes in Revenge of the Nerds, I was

watching it with my wife a couple months ago,

and there's a scene where he makes love to the

girl as she thinks he's somebody else. And I'm

thinking, wow, you could not do that today. Hell,

even American Pie, which came out in the 2000s,

you could not make today. No. Yeah, it's not...

PC for people how how there's a thought for you

and percolate on this for a week or two Whatever

happened to the teenage sex comedies like American

Pie I think American Pie was the last one that

I remember or maybe there was one where I was

watching this with Blair about a month ago it

involves these guys who want to go to a Cheerleading

camp and they fake their way in And they're like,

we're going to see boobs and all this other crap.

And it's them trying to screw the other cheerleaders.

And it came out in 2009. I'm thinking, man, this

just missed the wave of outrage. Because, man,

you could not make this movie today. Mm -mm.

No. But, ah. man, there's so many movies. Hell,

I was watching another movie, which is rather

poignant today. I was watching, I can't remember.

It's called one of, one of, just one of the guys.

That's it. Just one of the guys. And it's about

this girl. She writes an article for the paper

and the principal or whoever rejects it. She's

like, oh, no one's going to want to read that.

It's boring. You're a girl. Why don't you write

about something interesting. And she's like,

if I was a guy, you would have accepted that.

So she cuts her hair, dresses up like a dude,

befriends a bunch of people as a dude. And she

eventually gets caught in her line, hilarity

ensues. And turns out that movie was actually

remade, I didn't know this, with Amanda Bynes

in 2006 with a movie called She's the Man. Yep,

I've seen that one. I've seen the original too,

but I've seen that one. Yeah, I didn't know that

was a remake or a reboot, if you will. And I

kind of wonder, that movie would fly today. You

could make that movie and it would be different

than what we saw in 1980 something or 2006. But

that's just a side point. I thought that was

kind of interesting. Trying to think, is there

anything else that is kind of timeless? Talked

about monsters talked about sci -fi talked about

comedy talked about action. I Can't think of

any romantic franchises off the top of my head

Can't think of any war movies like Huh? No, no,

no, you wouldn't do that movie again, but say

they're never gonna remake Saving Private Ryan

But I kind of wonder whatever happened to that

Call of Duty movie. They were gonna make I thought

that was still in production Frig if I know man

that movie's been in production for like 10 years

or the halo movie my god can they just make that

already you already made halo nightfall just

get it over with um for crap's sake I just want

the master chief um I guess that's what the new

game's gonna have so that that should yeah when

halo infinite comes out which I'm guessing 2020

at this point um We'll have to wait and see.

But I'm out of ideas. Yeah. Well, when you look

at franchises, too, like the other thing is movies

that shouldn't keep harping on the past. Yeah.

Like Star Wars. Yeah. I'm hoping against hope

Hollywood gets some new and fresh blood in it

to give us new creative projects. But until Nostalgia

stops selling, and here's a hint, it won't until

we're dead and gone. But then again, hey, maybe

we'll see something new and exciting from this

generation, so. Maybe they'll be like, enough

is enough. You know what? You know Nostalgia's

dead when you see a property like, say, Pokemon

get rebooted. If they restart all 700 -something

Pokemon back to the original 151. with new redesigns

but that's me just speculating stupidly but anyway

yeah so i think that about rounds us out yeah

that about rounds us out so if you want to get

a hold of us friendos out there in the geek cast

and twig radio verse they can do well they can

get a hold of the podcast and alter geek or myself

at scp 21 and yourself sir you can find me on

twitter instagram and facebook at birdman dot

i'm always around scary Scarily ominous, folks.

Believe me, if you tweet me at three in the morning,

odds are I'll probably answer. And for our closing

off statement, dinosaurs will be real in the

next five years, just like Jurassic Park. So

again, history is a documentary. It's true. Or

films are a documentary. So until next time,

get altered.
