The Enterprise Arrives, Thoughts on the Finale Episodes, Season 2 & Twitter Hate

Hello and welcome to Future Imperfect. I'm your

host Admiral Phillips and in this episode I'm

flying solo. I don't have Mike the Birdman Dodd

or Booth Ninja who will be joining me, both of

which in a future episode as they're both finishing

watching or halfway through Star Trek Discovery

at this point. So... I thought it would be kind

of interesting, since we missed last week, to

talk about two episodes, The War Without, The

War Within, and Will You Take My Hand at the

Same Time, even though we're going to do a general

seasonal discussion when we have the other hosts

on, just because I think it would be interesting.

so the war within, or the war without the war

within. We're on the USS Discovery, Burnham and

the crew are faced with the reality of the war

during their absence. And in order to move forward,

Starfleet must use unconventional tactics and

sources to take their next action against the

Klingons. because they are back in the Alpha

Quadrant of the Prime Universe. And yeah, we

get Cerec and Katrina Cornwell who beam onto

the Discovery, take command of it, and are a

little shaken up because the Mirror Discovery

didn't get to wreak much havoc because it was

destroyed against the Klingons. Probably because

it didn't have a competent commander in the vein

of Lorca So I Thought that that was kind of interesting

that the other one was completely destroyed and

they're like we watched it get destroyed So I

think that's kind of funny and then we get the

meeting of Emperor Georgiou with the Federation

here and Cornwell is a little shaken up in trying

to reach the Starbase that was already taken

over by the Klingons. And the fact that all of

the Klingons are trying to wipe out the humans

is just a game of fun and power, and none of

them are unified. So yeah, it's kind of an interesting

episode there, but Starbase 1 was 100 astro units

from Earth and under Klingon control and... Yeah,

it's it's crazy. Yeah, so they had three Starships

lost and Starfleet officers killed and when they

took the Starbase and It very much set up that

smaller world that the original series has And

I say that meaning that you have pretty much

the 12 Constitution class Starships and then

a few handful of other ships kind of floating

about out there But for the most part Starfleet's

decimated with their fleet. The Klingons are

pretty much to themselves. This episode and the

next episode actually tie in really well with

the end of the season to bringing us to that

smaller world of the original series here. They

have Starfleet highly classify all information

on the Discovery's visit to Mirror Universe so

that nobody could get information on the Terran

universe or people that they may have known.

The same thing happened in the Terran universe.

They classified Jonathan Archer's finding of

the Defiant. You also have the Hulkan incident

with Kirk, which was classified and then declassified

for Bashir and Kira in DS9. So yeah, I think

that we're in for a wild ride as far as Discovery

is concerned. I have been one of the hugest critics

of the show since it came on. And saying that,

I don't completely hate it. I'm still wondering

about the Klingons and why they felt they had

to change them as much as they did, but the rest

of it seems to work out fairly well for what

we got. So I'm going to move to the other episode.

Will you take my hand really quickly? And then

I'll cover a bunch of other news article type

stuff that I found kind of related to Discovery.

in a variety of ways in some Twitter conversations

I had. There's a lot of people just going bananas

over this show. As far as what they've seen and

what they feel of this ending of the season,

it's going to be interesting to say the least.

So we have Saru, now that Cornwall is going back

to Earth, we have Saru basically taking command

of the discovery, but they've placed Emperor

Georgiou as her counterpart, Captain Georgiou.

And Cornwell presented her as the captain of

the discovery. And so they teleport the discovery.

Through the mycelial network which Stamets makes

a big crack at you know am I good or what? into

a big pocket mountain of the the planet and It

was also figured out that there's an Orion syndicate

type thing so they beam down they hang out with

the orions the orions are Slightly modified and

then you get this nice little nod to the Corbomite

Maneuver episode where they had Ron Howard's

brother Clint Howard who was Baylock in that

and he was he was also like Grady and DS9 and

Muk and Enterprise, so he's had a lot of appearances

throughout Trek's 51 years. Grady was a kid when

he was in TOS so that I mean he ages a lot better

just because of that. They have him in this as

an Orion that's making Tilly get high and then

Tilly figures out that they're carrying around

a bomb which will destroy a host of Kronos. They

can tell that she's not going to be doing the

right thing and so Burnham inadvertently talks

her out of it, takes it over, gives it to the

Klingon who created Valk into his human Tyler

persona, gives her the detonator and she unites

the houses of the Klingon Empire and gets them

all back to Kronos instead of to Earth, which

is their next stop to destroy because they would

have wiped out It would have been just very much

like the DS9 type of universe of the Terran Empire

just a lot earlier in this universe. And Burnham

not done what she did. So they have them all

go to Starfleet headquarters in San Francisco.

They get awarded medals by Cornwell and Admiralty

and you get to see the little The metals and

the little triangle pieces that go on the uniform

Like the original series with the dress uniforms

and everything Which was kind of a nice nod and

then in the crowd if you looked really carefully

you could see the the original series blue Shirts

that they wore in like the cage you didn't see

any of the tan or the red but you did see those

and They I guess what the producers explained

it as is the The uniforms that were worn by like

Pike and all of those people on the Constitution

class starships Had a different set of uniforms

Compared to the rest of Starfleet because they

were a completely different Set of Different

division of Starfleet you could say So they they

gave them like this special run. So that's how

they're explaining the uniform change which okay,

I'll There's a gray area to play in there that

I don't care. At least it's mentioned. And then

we end the episode with a distress signal as

they're taking Sarek back to Vulcan to get a

new captain for the Discovery, which I find odd

that they're going to be... I don't understand

why they didn't just promote Saru because he's

done a wonderful job when he's been captain.

And I think that he's made a very interesting

captain in the first alien one we've had. And

Burnham got exonerated, and so she's a commander

now on the Discovery under... ...under Saru.

And I don't know why they're having to get another

captain. It just doesn't make any sense. It's

going to be another created character. I imagine

either that or they're going to have found...

the Prime Lorca or something is going to take

place to where you're going to see somebody come

back that may have died already. Then we also

have this whole aspect with the distress signal

and it comes out NCC 17 and then they're having

a hard time making it out. You don't see it and

then they're saying Captain Pike is hailing.

and the Enterprise comes out swooping into the

screen with the same kind of shiny metal aesthetic

as the rest of Discovery, which, okay, it makes

sense. They're gonna put the shine on it. They

didn't change all that much with the ship. It

looks pretty much like the original series ship,

other than the fact it's not white or that opaque

white on the exterior. But really, the only ships

that had the white exterior were the original

series and the original series films. If you

look at DS9, Voyager, the next generation Enterprise,

they all have that metallic metal shell on the

outside. So it kind of makes sense that they

wouldn't just have paint of it. I'll give them

a pass on it. None of the nacelles on the inside,

the interior part of it, had the blue of the

refurbished nacelles. But it also, in the original

series, they didn't have that light up. But it

very well could have. So they just gave it a

more shiny look. I'm sure it'll be fine. I hope

that they don't modify too much on the interior

of the ship. It's probably going to be that grunge

metal type of look. In modification, it's probably

gonna get more of the TOS feel I loved how they

ended the episode of the season With the original

series theme and I guess they're gonna as it

progresses the series They're gonna get more

and more the original series influence Until

it completely matches up with the original series.

So we'll probably see like the communicators

the phasers get modified We'll probably see the

uniforms. I'll go one way. We'll probably see

variety of things take place I'm hoping with

season 2 we get a Captain Pike casting even if

it's like Bruce Greenwood or somebody in that

instance where they get to portray Pike even

if it's somebody younger getting to portray him

before he or portray him not betray him before

he becomes Commodore Pike and gets his injury

so There's there's a lot of play here and I guess

the Enterprise is going to take Going to be on

and off again throughout season 2 It won't be

the center of attention, but it will be among

the center of attention with the discovery and

Starfleet also outlawed the use of the the sport

drive until they could find a suitable replacement

Because they don't want to use human or a creature

to be plugged into it which was kind of a nice

nod to show that while it's experimental and

it worked awesomely, it was too dangerous and

against the moral code to be used. And so that's

probably what starts the transwarp discussions

and creation that they mess with later on with

the search for Spock with the Excelsior. So.

we'll probably see that it's a lot of everything

is lining up and that's putting my mind at ease

and helping me enjoy the show more I realized

that people were like oh just sit and watch the

show and you know don't take offense they're

gonna explain it blah blah blah yeah it's it's

well and fine and I do see like there's these

Twitter conversations going on where people are

just still spastic I've I was spastic when it

first came out I've lightened that load heavily

since getting through the season. Was there a

lot of sloppy writing and easy -to -tell plot

lines? Oh, yeah, tons. But overall, as a whole,

the show hasn't been just terrible. It's not

been terrible. Like, my favorite episode is the

Harry Mudd episode, and then probably this last

one right here. Those were the two that felt

the most trek to me out of the entire season.

And a lot of what they've done in the last two

episodes and the Harry Mudd thing just further

helped it fit into the original series. So I'm

definitely enjoying it now, you could say. And

I wonder what they're gonna do with season two.

I wonder when it's gonna come out. It's It's

it's got a pretty solid cast. I look forward

to seeing more from them Tyler is no longer among

the cast Lorca, George Oh, so we're gonna see

some new people come in that'll be nice We'll

probably see a new casting for Pike we'll see

a new casting for number one Which would be nice

to see the two of them appear in season two even

if it's new, you know, new similar styles like

they've done with Sarek, I would be happy to

see that. If Spock shows up, I would doubt it,

but it could happen. It'll be up briefly, or

could it be explained that he believes that,

you know, Burnham is a dishonor upon the family,

and so he just disowns her completely because

of how Sarek has treated her over him. Which

would help fuel the difficulties between the

two of them of how one prefers the other, you

know, or the other child. So it's very much playing

favoritism. So I can definitely see a lot of

this. So... Anyways, we're supposed to get Season

2 in September. So we'll see how that goes. So

we'll be back after this. And we're back. So

I thought we'd start off with some feedback and

some social media conversations and then kind

of go into some of the various Star Trek news

that has come out Since the last episode we had

The last one I covered was what's past is prologue

and and predictions and whatnot so Brad says

Don't know a lot about the universe so please

bear with me, but when time travel is used before

it was a one -off thing Even once they knew flying

backwards around a Sun equals time travel It

wasn't bad all the time because the prime directives

blah blah blah So yeah It's it's interesting

anyway with the time travel and the the sport

drives a scenario of jumping universes so It's

been better than I thought like I said and and

he's kind of saying he's like in the journey

so At that particular moment in time he didn't

know where the series was going I kind of had

an idea and where things were being set up For

season 2 and to connect it to Star Trek canon

So it kind of made sense where that where they

took it Following that we have Birdman Dodd on

Facebook posted something which I thought was

kind of humorous. He was getting Something that

was clearly like sex bots on Facebook. I've never

had this issue So it's it's kind of funny to

me that he he got this but he says it's a funny

little distraction he got an invite on Facebook

Messenger and So he the person says hi He says

you will be assimilated and the lady goes What

do you mean? And he says resistance is futile

your biologic distinctiveness will be added to

our own which I thought was quite funny because

That's probably the best way to deal with it

So yeah, and then on Twitter there were a couple

people trying to figure out how and thinking

way too much about how Starfleet uniforms fit

the Discovery uniforms into Trek Cannon and makes

the most narrative sense. And so this person

was going through trying to do a rundown of all

the different Federation uniforms. And I kind

of put together a graphic of it anyway. Kind

of... putting some of the amalgamation of the

Kelvin universe in as well because we never really

saw the uniforms between a certain time period,

between like Archer and Pike until Discovery.

So I took the liberty of taking some of those.

I did find it interesting that because of the

lighting, the gold uniforms are actually supposed

to be green. So they're actually supposed to

be green, red and blue. which kind of makes sense

when you kind of go from the TNG colors, like

some of it doesn't really quite match. It's,

like I said, interesting. I made basically a

graphic trying to place the timelines of a variety

of these uniforms. I came up with this huge multitude

of different variations, but it overall was really

fun to put together, kind of a project. And then

I kind of commented on Twitter about the season

finale of it, saying that it was by far the most

Trek -like episode, aside from the Harry Mudd

one. We've got an all -season, and then the nostalgia,

and the touch of the TLS ending theme to the

episode, and the modified yet true Enterprise.

I posted it all. I mean, granted, we got some

of the Constitution refit for the rear end of

the Enterprise, and we got some of the front

end from the cage version. And so it was kind

of a nice amalgamation of it, but for the most

part, it's the cage version of the Enterprise,

not the Kirk version, which fits. And it's...

Funny to me how many people are just ridiculously

bashing this I Could have seen it going a lot

worse than what we got I I think that they did

really well for trying to fit this into Canon

and make it work And and I think we're only gonna

get closer to it and and you know this crap sandwich

that everybody's Saying that we're eating on

it. I think it's gonna change drastically as

the series goes on I do see it now starting to

fit into canon. I do see the possibilities of

it. It's something that I've had to take basically

a 180 on my original stance of I hate this show.

And when you watched the first half of the season,

I definitely disliked it because it was not tracked

to me. But the further along we've gotten in

the show, especially with the revelation of Lorca,

we discovered that, you know, when Lorca was

in charge, we weren't getting true Starfleet.

And so with Saru in charge and Burnham having

to act as an actual Federation person, even though

not in the ranks, it fit very well. So and then

you get to see you know the little triangle metals

you get to see a lot of people complaining on

social media On a variety of levels There's some

people that have been saying you know that Easter

eggs and the the way the show showed up But you

can all kind of equate it to Larka Dark Larka

and his journey and The fact that There's still

a Twitter war amongst it. Don't get me wrong,

the Klingons still bother me. That's about the

only thing at this point. Everything else, I'm

pretty much set on how it's turned out. And I

understand it now. It fits with my thought process.

They made it look like Kirk and Pike's ship,

not like the Abrams version, which I'm very thankful

for. You know that it's only a matter of time

before this particular version or skin of the

ship ends up on Discovery, or not on Discovery,

but on Star Trek Online, to be able to play as

this aesthetic. So, overall, not bad at all.

Bill Smith of the Trek Geeks podcast, Discovering

Trek and whatnot, It says, I'm weary of hearing

that after 50 years that this is the only permissible

depiction of the Enterprise. I'm weary of Canon.

I'm weary of the Gatekeeper fans. Give me good

stories where they have the name. That's what

I care about. And I kind of agree with them to

some extent. But I'm fine with what they did

in Discovery for the Enterprise. It could have

been a lot worse. And people are trying to twist

it out of... Measure saying that That they weren't

happy with it And people are just purposely trying

to get in a pissing contest with them But yeah,

I mean yeah people are trying to say you know

about the timeline and everything else And the

fact that Klingons changed for no reason in 79

It's a difficult thing, isn't it? It would be

interesting to see what Gene Roddenberry has

to say about all of this, had he still been alive

at this point. I'm kind of looking forward to

how season... two turns out as far as the ship

and everything else. And I've seen articles stating

that, you know, now it's at that point that they

kind of have to have Pike and Spock interaction,

despite the fact that Spock never speaks with

Serik for 18 years by the time he's serving with

Kirk. So it'll be interesting. But somebody else

mentioned that apparently you can see some cage

style uniforms in the crowd during the Paris

speech. And the recent novel did say the enterprise

or the Connie Constitution ships have a separate

uniform design, so as long as they keep the interior

in spirit with the cage, they'll be happy. It

says, one advantage that the designers have is

Pike's Enterprise isn't as vibrant as Kirk's,

so they can get away with a more muted color

scheme. And I was kind of mentioning going back

and forth with this person, and they said that

my... Position from day one was wait and see

on the cannon front I thought some of the internet

went way too hyperbolic shock at the show not

adhering to it let them finish their story and

so You know, it's it could be possibly that this

is just a weird offshoot of of the Podcast or

not podcast of the Klingons. Sorry. I was reading

the word podcast on there But it could be a weird

offshoot of the the augment virus where They

they got you know, the the super strength type

stuff and and these are the mutated ones and

the other Klingons The ones that have their original

head ridges and the ones without the head ridges

that are the ones that were, you know, used to

could have gone far away from Klingon space to

avoid contamination until they could figure out

a way to stop it 100 % since the enterprise era.

And so I mean, we could be in that kind of a

status of how things changed. So we'll just kind

of have to wait and see. But I think that we'll

end up with, for the captain, and I made a tweet

about this, for the discovery, I think we could

see Captain Robert April, since we've never seen

him on film or of any kind, take command of the

discovery. It would be kind of interesting because

he would be the original captain of the Enterprise

before Pike and before Kirk. And he was name

dropped earlier in the show. The other thing

that could be interesting if it was Prime Lorca

that somehow got back. So there's a lot of possibilities

here, a lot of possibilities. So it remains to

be seen what they do as far as that's concerned.

But yeah, that's about all of the social aspects

I'm gonna mention. I'm a fan of the original

Constitution class Starship Enterprise, whether

it be the Kelvin, the original series, the Discovery

one, or the the refit Enterprise class type Constitution.

I love all of those Constitution class Starship

designs. They're quite honestly my favorite truck

designs. And Star Trek 6 has my favorite bridge

design. Kind of just remains to be seen so We

could see a lot another thing that kind of popped

up on social media was somebody name -dropped

Tom Welling maybe a good choice for a Captain

Pike and they put him side by side with the cage

Captain Pike and they look kind of uncanny similar

So I could definitely see that coming off and

people are like I didn't know I needed this until

now So, kind of interesting, like I said. Also,

myself, Mike the Birdman Dodd, Alex, and a few

other people from This Week in Geek are starting

our own, or are in the process of starting our

own Star Trek, or Starfleet International chapter.

So if anybody is wanting to get involved with

this and signs up for Starfleet, let me know.

And I think it would be a fun way for everyone

to get more involved with not only the podcast,

but get more involved with Star Trek and Starfleet

and it doesn't really matter the way I'm setting

it up It doesn't matter what region you live

in. It's this is a Virtual meeting type thing.

It's gonna be based out of my region 13 Because

of my particular address So if anybody's wanting

to get involved with this and kind of go that

I think that's about it on this episode. I know

it's a little short or about even with the rest

of the show. The past few weeks when I've done

this, and I know that it's a lot shorter being

that I've kind of covered two episodes in one,

and where we think the road could go from here.
