About this Episode

In the 3rd Episode of Fit.Ready.Go, Steve and Mary discuss Subway in response to last week’s comments, Thanksgiving Feasts and more about unhealthy eating. We also talk briefly about our son and new puppy.

I feel so alive And welcome to fit ready go weight

loss and healthy living. I'm your host Steve

Megatron Phillips and joining me is my wife Mary

Hello She just looked over at me she's like I'm

the host Which is true I just intro it she figures

out what she wants to do I don't so How's it

been since the last episode? Oh, it's been kinda

sad around here, so we lost our dog. She passed

away a little less than two weeks ago, so that's

why it's taken a little bit longer to get back

on. Yeah, and I talked about the experience on

my podcast, Altered Geek, but yeah, it's been

kinda sad around, although... We just adopted

our new baby puppy, Piper. Another beagle. This

one's a redhead though. Just like her mama. And

just like my son. So it's actually kind of funny.

There's three redheads in the house now. If you

count one of the cats, technically he has two.

I said, yep. So we are going to be addressing

how to control eating at Thanksgiving, which

we all like to gorge. But first I wanted to address

Mike's question from the last episode. He had

mentioned about the fast food and first off I

just wanted to say again, you go and get fast

food on occasion, that's completely fine. We

get it on occasion. The whole point in the last

episode was the fact that most people, it's not

an occasion anymore, it's all the time. But he

had asked, if Subway isn't as healthy, did the

Jared campaign lie? Well, no, I can't say that

Jared didn't eat Subway every single day. He

probably did, but to be truthful, if you really

wanted to, you can lose weight eating pizza every

single day. If you ate, say, one or two slices

a day, you might be very, very hungry. But you

can do it. And there are some things with Subway

that are healthy. Of course the first thing you

want to do is you're gonna go for things like

the roast beef or the oven roasted chicken, that

type of thing. Only a six inch, foot long, don't

even think about it. And cheese. Do not get it

with cheese even when you're checking the nutritional

facts. That's all of those calories the fat and

everything it was without cheese and I still

wouldn't suggest eating that every single day

because it has tons of all of their their sandwiches

have Sodium and a lot of sodium a lot of cholesterol,

you know? And I'm not saying that everything

on their menu is unhealthy, but so many of us,

like, you know, we add our mayonnaise, and we

add our cheeses, and I haven't gotten cheese

on my Subway sub, if I go to Subway, like, once

a year, you know, very long time. And then, I

do, even myself, I usually get the low -fat mayonnaise

on it, I only haven't put a small amount, but

most of us, like, the extras on there. So that's

when it can get bad. People think just because,

you know, they're getting a Subway Sub, that

it's okay. Well you get the Italian cheese or

you get the white bread and all of that. No.

So there's a few things, but always, like I said

before, check the nutritional facts even before.

And remember, those are without cheese, without

all your sauces and stuff, so. Well, and also

they're the six inch subs, they're not even the

foot long. So like, if you're somebody that eats

a foot long sub, when you go there, which would

be something I would do, you're doubling everything

that's on there. So like if you've, you know,

for instance, I like the meatball marinara, you

know, you get 920 milligrams of salt. or sodium

on a six -inch, which is, you know, 1 ,800 when

you get to a foot long. And it's 480 calories,

but remember, that's on wheat bread, which I'm

one of the few people that eat wheat bread. Steve

even complains about it. So, and that's without

cheese on it. That's without asking them for

extra sauce or any of those extra things you

put on it or if you put Parmesan cheese on it.

or whatever, so, and then if you eat a foot long,

then you're almost at, you're at over 1 ,000

calories with that, and 2 ,000 milligrams of

sodium, so. Well, and it says like on the bottom

of their nutrition, like if you can read the

small text, it says sandwich nutrition values

include nine grain. wheat bread, lettuce, tomato,

onion, green pepper, and cucumbers. Values do

not include cheese unless noted. So like if it's

a steak and cheese or pizza sub with cheese,

then it's gonna include it, but otherwise you

can kiss the chiefs goodbye. Yeah, and what I've

learned I really like there is you can take any

of their sandwiches and turn them into salads.

And so I like it where they actually cut up the

lettuce, and they are so good. I just have them

add a little bit of whatever type of sauce I

want, and then I have my chicken in there. Then

I'm not getting all those carbs from the bread,

and they're very good salads. And again, be careful

with the sauces, because sauces can add up very,

very fast. Talking about Thanksgiving. Yeah coming

up and we all know that people love to eat the

turkey and eat the you know the stuffing and

the bread and We all overeat and this is me actually

giving you permission to overeat it is Thanksgiving

and we should sometimes be able to splurge on

things that we want I mean We are human, we sometimes

want to do that. But there's a difference in

overeating and gorging or binging. You have to

be careful. Don't eat so much that by the time

you're leaving your family's home or whatever

it is that you're... I mean can't even walk or

you have to unbutton your pants because we all

know that's a joke for Thanksgiving and I've

done it many many years that you know I'm so

stuffed I can't move it feels but if you're eating

the amount that you would eat when you went to

a buffet you're eating too much because buffets

are one of those I mean basically Thanksgiving

and Christmas and those type of holidays are

just like a buffet because you see all this plethora

of food in front of you it's not like normal

meal where there's a limited amount, you eat

one sitting of the plate, you know. No, usually

because we're socializing we sit there and eat

a second plate, maybe a third plate, and then

we just keep going with the dessert and then

we go with another dessert and it just kind of

builds, kind of like when you're at a buffet

where you keep building mountains of food on

your plate and you just keep stuffing yourself.

Point and example, we were going to a children's

museum the other day before we picked up our

dog. And we happened to be driving past one of

the rare KFC buffets. And because... And this

is when I say we do go out to eat on occasion.

But after eating there, we kind of regretted

it. Yes. Because we realized that... We never

go again. Well, one, it's one of those things

better left in memory, kind of like... you know

even when it applies to anything really but Steve

had never been to one I hadn't been to one since

I was kid we used to always go up north and before

we go to the beach we go to the KFC buffet and

it was so I mean it was so good for one they

actually put good food on there now they put

chicken mashed potatoes and mac and cheese that's

about it but Steve was kept saying oh he wanted

to try he wanted to try it so finally we just

happened to be by like drive right past one so

I was like well you know you want to try it and

it used to be really good when I was a kid so

we'll go ahead and go and it was I don't know

I didn't even eat like a Massive amount or anything

it had nothing to do with that. It was just for

one our buddies because we do eat Pretty healthy

around here. Our bodies are not used to all that

grease and stuff So both of our bodies reacted

and just well hers hits it differently than mine

mine I may not be The healthiest eater I'm a

picky eater which helps because I don't eat sauces.

I don't eat any of the the excess stuff I don't

eat it. I don't eat anything that A normal person

would would deem good like tasty, but it's like

horrible for you So like in that sense, I don't

have that issue, but I do have the issue with

gorging myself with stuff. I do like Like for

instance, I had heaping amounts of macaroni and

cheese. I had their mashed potatoes and gravy

I had some of the huge crispy chicken wings that

are chicken breasts that Not only is the deep

-fried not good for you, but chickens not either

and I had a couple of biscuits so I mean it just

kinda I didn't feel very good when I left there

compared to if you know for instance if I would

have got like Subway or something or got a sandwich

somewhere you know like a hamburger or something

I probably would have felt better because it's

not as much there's there's nothing really deep

-fried so it's because we're not used to that

and plus I think because I'm getting old like

salt and sugar don't really agree with me all

that much anymore But yeah, so for Thanksgiving

the very first thing I want to say is don't skip

breakfast just because you're gonna Eat a lot

that day. That's I mean what time do you my family?

Around 1 2 o 'clock, so I'm gonna still eat breakfast

I'm not gonna eat lunch of course because it's

gonna be so close, but I don't want to go Starving

and I'm just gonna eat my normal breakfast that

doesn't mean run out to Bob Evans and have a

big breakfast It just means maybe if you eat

a bowl of cereal or like me I'll usually eat

some eggs and maybe some oatmeal. Just eat that

just so that by the time you get there you're

not just gonna dive into the food and just shovel

everything in. So that's the first thing. Second

is take your time. I mean just... You know don't

don't shovel down the food because there's so

much there. I mean take your time have conversations

and Put down your fork. It is okay to actually

you know Stop in between bites Well, and if you

take drinks of water or milk or whatever in between

and kind of just take your time and just converse

your stomach to brain ratio of reacting to what

you've just eaten will kind of prevent you from

Stuffing yourself because it'll your stomach

will eventually relay it because they say it

takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to Relay

to your brain that you're full So if you're constantly

shoveling you're not gonna know and I'm guilty

of that I constantly shovel every year because

for the last few years I Don't know last almost

ten years almost I've been going between Mary's

parents and my parents house and One's at one

o 'clock and one's at three, so I eat twice.

I usually eat a lot more at my mom's because

I grew up with the food, so it's one of those

things I miss. I still eat probably three times

the amount of food I normally would on a normal

day. Maybe if you just have to have some of everything,

just do very small amounts. Don't do huge amounts

of green bean casserole. Just do a small amount

just so you get that taste. And then in between

your plates, if you think you're going to have

a second plate, wait. Wait like a half an hour.

Put a timer on your phone or watch and see. what

time it is, if it's 2 o 'clock say okay I'm not

going to eat anything else until 2 30 if I'm

still hungry if you're actually still hungry

at 2 30 then you can go ahead and maybe eat a

little bit more if you still feel like you want

to give your body that time to decide if it's

still hungry and have your dessert I mean I dessert

is my like I've said before, is definitely where

I have issues. So go ahead and have some dessert.

Normally myself, like if there's two desserts,

I do want both. So if I do have both, I'm going

to have a very small piece of each. Because I

like pumpkin pie, but I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin

pie, but it doesn't seem like Thanksgiving without

pumpkin pie. So I might have a little sliver,

but then if there's something chocolate. Say

there's piece of fudge or something. I'll have

a very very small piece of fudge So it's still

more than I should eat, but it's not Horrible

either I'm a weird one. I just I shovel the regular

food. I don't eat sweets or dessert on holidays

It's just unless it's like a cookie or something.

I don't really go for it Sorry, I'm actually

trying to get over my cold right now and I have

so much in my head. So I know there's a couple

other things. Yeah, and it's also cold season,

so we've all gone through it in the house recently.

I found that Day Cool is your best friend when

you have a flu type thing going on and sore throat

and everything else. Especially with the snow.

Storm getting ready to blow through which is

also why we we got you know on the route we did

for the pooch But yeah as far as as far as the

holidays. It's just being careful and staying

staying motivated with yourself and not You know

just kind of be conscious of what you're putting

in your mouth and think about the next day Are

you gonna be beating yourself up because you

ate too much? I mean if you do overeat and eat

way too much. I mean, don't beat yourself up.

Just get right back on. But think about that

while you are eating on Thanksgiving. Do I really,

do I want to step on the scale tomorrow or am

I gonna feel bloated and horrible for work tomorrow?

I mean, so just think about that. Yeah, so I

think that about rounds it out with the the Thanksgiving

conversation. So what are some things that you

would like to kind of instill on people or ask

them for the next episode? What is your biggest

problem during the holiday season with eating?

Because I want to kind of cover some of the other

basis of eating just during the holiday season

with all of our Parties that are coming up and

Christmas and the sweets out and everything else

Gifts that we get at work all of that. So or

even some of the Because like for us we set up

the Christmas tree right after like the weekend

after Thanksgiving typically So is there something

that you possibly do bad with that you shouldn't

while you're doing that tradition like For instance,

we've done hot chocolate or cookies on occasion

and stuff like that, which there's nothing wrong

with that in moderation. We'll just do our hot

chocolate. I mean, I wouldn't say give up traditions.

Yeah. You can't have a tradition day of eating

fudge, and then a tradition day of eating cookies,

and then a tradition day of having hot chocolate.

I mean, that's one thing, but... And you can't

keep tacos out for Santa, like, when her son

wants us to leave tacos cookies out. and pancakes

for Santa. Him being three now, he's actually

thinking about sitting on Santa's lap for once

instead of running up to him and screaming bloody

murder and then running backwards. So he tells,

we're explaining to him that you leave milk and

cookies for Santa and carrots for his reindeer

and he says to us that he Wants to also leave

Santa tacos. Well, he woke up I think it was

yesterday morning of this morning and told me

he wanted to leave tacos for Santa I said why

tacos he's like Santa likes tacos, so I'm thinking

he must have dreamt of Santa eating tacos I'm

not sure why because we didn't have tacos, but

I think well I think I think when we were feeding

him dinner last night he we said something about

the fact that one night he'll like one food,

kind of like tacos, and then the next night he

won't. So it must have, the word tacos must have

somehow gotten into his subconscious and associated

with Santa somehow. And so he said that, I didn't

hear the pancake part. Yeah, and he said that

one this morning, the tacos was like two night

mornings ago or something. Yeah, he's, it's funny,

so. So yeah, I think that about rounds it out

for this episode of Fit Ready Go. Expect another

episode shortly after Thanksgiving. Hope everybody

has a great Thanksgiving holiday. Let me know

how you did during Thanksgiving. Go ahead and

post to me and just, you know, maybe get your

front accountability friend or something and

have them keep track. And yeah, we'll mention

next episode how bad we did or how good we did,

depending. It should be a little easier this

year. We're only going to one house, so it should

be a lot easier not to overstuff thyself. Oh,

and then also, while I'm on the subject of it,
