About this Episode

An analysis of the latest Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer, breaking down key imagery like Kylo Ren's lightsaber and Snoke. The discussion includes listener feedback on movie collections, the film Downsizing, and critiques of Star Trek: Discovery.

Do you start your day deciding which video game

you're gonna play? You fight with your family

Go for which is better, Marvel or DC? The geek

of all, you beat friends cause you know what

Batman beats Superman This is the right place

to be Hello and welcome to Altered Geek I'm your

host Steve and Phillips and in this episode I

am going to be talking about the new Star Wars

trailer but before I get to that Today's show

the first episode that I've done that's not on

a Friday in a little bit, and there's a good

reason for it. As I mentioned, uh... Star Wars

dropped the new trailer and if you weren't one

of the people that watched it during the NFL

which you know In my opinion I call it the never

fun league I would say that You didn't have to

wait that long. Honestly, it kind of popped up

on social media all of a sudden around 930 Eastern

time and Gotta say kind of impressed. It was

it was really awesome Did not expect anything

that happened in this trailer. I still am confused

and have no idea what's going on Despite the

fact that it gives away some things and some

things that it didn't give away So just that

aside. I'm gonna talk about the the the trailer

and kind of break it down But first I'm gonna

play the trailer in its audio form and if you're

following along on When I found you. What do

you guys think about what you just heard and

what you've seen in the trailer? I myself am

just so kind of in awe of what they're doing

here and the fact that it's... First, let's break

it down by the music. First of all, it sounds

like a mesh between some of the kind of Empire

Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, the original.

It's got some Sith in it, some Jedi. It's very

mixed. Which kind of alludes to that that gray

Jedi concept that that's coming along and it's

funny that Ray's lightsaber is white In the trailer

or a very very very very bright white blue and

then the trailer starts off and you have Kylo

Ren watching a first -order facility you see

the new heavily armored at at walkers with Snoke

commenting about when he first found Kylo and

it's it's crazy and you see like these white

guards and then it doesn't really tell if it's

Kylo or if it's Snoke in this particular scene

and you get to see Kylo's new lightsaber and

it's not a crossguard lightsaber It's a black

like jet black lightsaber and he's surrounded

by red He's fully in his his black getup. This

lightsaber is very refined compared to his silver

cross guard lightsaber But then when he picks

it up you notice that it's still a cross guard

but it's a much better condition one than what

he crafted and then it jumps to Rey igniting

the lightsaber which is like either it's very

white so I'm not sure if they're going for that

blue lightsaber of of Anakin's or if they're

going for like the the white almost of how Obi

-Wan's was in A New Hope but either way I like

what what they're going with with it. then it's

got the kind of lum lum beat to everything which

is kind of cool and Ray kind of comments she

kind of comments about how she's always known

that there was something there and that now she's

finally woken up to this this force and she's

commenting about how she needs help while she's

training and Luke watches as she's training and

sees the ground split and he's just got this

look like holy crap like he's just terrified

and you see the ground lifting and he's got this

look of horror on his face and says you know

I've seen this this look of strength before It

only once and you see when Luke's crawling out

of the wreckage of the the Jedi temple and his

burned metallic hand and In talking to R2 and

telling him how it didn't scare him enough the

first time he saw it But it it scares him now

and he's got this look of pure horror on his

face of how He's just he can't do it again as

he's running away and then it cuts between Ray

and in Kylo and You see Kylo's new tie fighter

and and Leia and He's it sounds like he's finally

letting the past die In that he's not pursuing

his grandfather's much or his parents So he's

giving himself this pet talk anyway You get a

nice little battle of TIE fighters shooting at

the Millennium Falcon. You have Chewbacca. You

have one of those Porg things. Various Imperials

are shooting at the Rebel fleet. fighting Captain

Phasma and he's got this this like wicked like

suit and he's got one of those Things that the

the one stormtrooper used against him when he

had the lightsaber and he's going after Phasma

to beat her up and It cuts to the space battle

and then you get Luke laying on the ground looking

like he's gotten wet and he's burned a little

bit, and it doesn't say who he's talking to,

but he says that essentially that this is not

going to go the way you think, and then you see...

Rey swimming, and then she comes up, and then

you see Luke kind of cloaked in the dark, and

Finn infiltrating the First Order, and these,

I love the new ad ads, those look pretty sweet.

And then you get to actually see Snoke, like

up close and personal, like in the flesh. He's

very tan, he's got white hair, he's... A little

bit deformed in the one side of the face, but

the other face side looks perfectly normal Looking

at him in this instance if it weren't for the

fact that he looks Very fleshy and and not like

the green or pale that Palpatine had I would

swear that it was Palpatine in a sense After

he fell down the mine shaft or a deformed clone,

which it still could very well be I doubt it.

That's just my own personal speculation. I'm

trying to figure out who He fits character wise

like I know he's his own character, but I'm trying

to think of who he would fit Wouldn't be crazy

if it was like Chancellor Valorum from like The

Phantom Menace like before all this crap began

that would be insane And then you see him using

his force powers and and Ray just like struggling

and screaming held up in the air and She's talking

about How she needs someone to show her place

and all of it and then you see Kylo across from

her and in the trailer and he holds out his hand

It's just the way that It kind of goes it it

leaves you wondering all kinds of different things

So with the trailer being watched the speculation

being Does Ray become dark does he manage to

turn Kyle good again does Luke go dark does Luke

die There's all kinds of different things that

could happen here It's It's a little wild when

you look at the trailer There's so many questions

like for every answer we get and for everything

we see in the trailer there's there's more questions,

so it's It's definitely gonna be one of those

films that whether you see this trailer or not

it You're still gonna be kind of up in the air

and confused of what's going on with with Star

Wars the last Jedi and I'm definitely planning

on seeing this. This is gonna be awesome a very

awesome film and We'll see what happens and how

it sets up for episode 9 I'm This is probably

the the best trailer we've gotten so far for

the last Jedi and yet It tells us so much without

telling us as much as what I would have thought

would have happened But it looks like we're going

to get kind of a completely different story.

So I think that this will be this trilogy's Empire

Strikes Back for sure. So what do you guys think?

What do you think is going to happen in the trailer

or in the film and who's going to die, who's

going to live, who's going to become good, evil,

who's going to, you know, just your basic thoughts

on seeing this trailer and what you think is

going to happen. So I'm going to take another

quick break and come back with some listener

feedback on the various platforms, whether it

be Twitter, email, episode post, Facebook. So

we'll be right back after this quick break and

cover that. and we're back so when we do the

full episode later this week I promise it will

be a pretty loaded episode so yeah be sure to

stay tuned for that there'll be a few things

that I'm a little fired up about just by some

of the latest news to kind of populate itself

if you follow me on Twitter you'll kind of figure

out some of it And it's not Star Trek related,

because I cover that on Future Imperfect, and

just to kind of give a quick lowdown of Star

Trek Discovery, it's growing on me. It's not

very good, but it's growing on me. I still find

the Orville to have more solid writing and better

all the way around, I find it to be better. discovery

while I like it and I like it as a reboot or

as its own timeline I don't see it fitting into

the prime timeline at all and it's not just the

aesthetics that they copied from the Abrams universe

it's the it's the whole thing with the Klingons

how flat a lot of the acting and characters are

in the writing how Poor some of the writing is

in some instances with this magic pixie dust

Some of the stuff that's never mentioned later

in track that's magically here the holograms

which has never been in track until nemesis You

know worship aside, it's just there's there's

so many freaking holes in the show And this is

coming from somebody that watches a lot of track

And I know that they've got super fans on the

show supposedly protecting parts of it, which

if this was a whole dilemma, they should have

just not gotten this timeline. They should have

just gone ahead to the 25th century and just

done it there. But that's neither here nor there.

So the first that I have up is Scanner 51. So

he says hey guys, I've been giving Steve Phillips

regular updates on my new project We recently

bought a new house in California. It's easier

than you think. I finally unpacked my stuff and

set everything up I keep telling him it's done,

but this time I really think it is Right side

is Star Wars stuff and left side is DC side DC

side has all my DC AU DVDs all the DC you DVDs

all the DC EU blu -rays, some of my signed Jim

Lee comics, signed DVDs from Mr. Mark Hamill.

Oh, you lucky soul. And a signed Kyle Higgins

Nightwing poster that will be replacing the Wonder

Woman poster shortly. So just, yeah, looking

at his image, he's got a ton of cool posters.

Some of them I've seen before, some of them not.

Specifically the 12... Superheroes on the same

sheet with the silhouettes. I've seen that one

before the Wonder Woman I've seen before with

from the movie of Batman v Superman and I Love

the DVD collection as well as some of the figures

It's yeah, you get yourself a nice little collection

going there man. I Don't have that kind of Kind

of a collection anymore mine's kind of depleted

and gone and on the one hand I miss it on the

other I don't Just because it was stuff that

took up space but I do enjoy My few things I

have left which is mostly Star Trek memorabilia

a few Batman's few Hot Wheel Batmobiles Got a

couple of Star Trek mugs that I've had for a

long time one of them since I was like 10. Somehow

I still have it, and it's not been destroyed.

Yeah, so I don't have much left. I have a few

Transformers comics from a select run, and a

couple of Star Trek comics left, and that's about

it. Going over to last week's Altered Geek, we

have Desiree... Cretean I'm sorry if I'm butchering

your last name Who says MTV has teen shows I'm

a Canadian but much music is owned by the same

company up here and They advertise MTV shows

a lot TLC is just shoved in that category though

Yeah, I was I was more so like I mean I I get

it but MTV used to be music and now it's a lot

of like, oh, how to be a pregnant teen, how to,

you know, just all these reality shows and I

don't know, I don't see it as a family entertainment

type of channel. I could see if it was under

some other category, but family entertainment,

MTV is not among those. And TLC is just it used

to be the learning channel now. It's the lazy

channel, which has a bunch of garbage on it Where

the lackluster channel it's it's full of the

fact that they went to mostly late reality shows

and it's less of Learning how to build things

learning how to you know, do this learning that

you're learning about oh And this dates my knowledge

of it. I'm sure it hasn't changed all that much

but Like the honey boo -boo and all that kind

of weird crap that was on there and then of course

Desiree also says congrats to Mike many happy

years to you both and I will be there for his

wedding so Being the best man. I will be flying

out to Meet TF2 and Mike for the first time in

person So that will be interesting. We'll have

to get a, well obviously we'll be getting a group

photo, so it'll be kind of fun to actually meet

him. I've met Michael Wilson in person before

at BotCon, and that's how I got involved with

the Frank Welker photo. I'm definitely excited,

as it were, for... for Mike and Little birdie

tells me I'll be seeing Michael Wilson again

during that same time period so who knows we'll

have like a little mini beast unleashed GCR and

reunion there minus a few key members of course

based on location so Moving over to the altered

geek fan page we have Brad mall who is a friend

of the show and friend of All Things Transformers,

specifically on the Meatless Burger Experience

episode where I talk about bad animation and

game alphas and new age sequels or new movies.

I talked about the movie Downsizing with Matt

Damon and Kristen Wegg and Jason Sudeikis where

they get shrunk down to action figure size. To

live on the overpopulated earth He says It looks

interesting. I prefer a hard sci -fi take and

not a comedy, but that's just me I'd imagine

natural disasters would be a lot more devastating

In this form, but as long as they go to space

in the sequel, I'll be happy That would actually

be hilarious if they went to space and you see

like this little tin can like Almost akin to

like Toy Story launching off into Into space

that that would be hilarious But I'm looking

forward to the movie. I think I think it's gonna

be a lot of fun overall it doesn't strike me

as like a Big Film Or or all that dramatic With

the sci -fi, but it's it's an interesting take

and probably it's going to show a lot of the

Psychological aspects of being downsized and

shrunken to four inches tall So I'm thinking

that it's gonna be more of that like a dark comedy

sci -fi with it But it's it's hard to tell What

I find amazing is is it doesn't come out until

December 22nd and IMDB already has it as a 5

.9 out of 10 Rotten Tomatoes has 65 % fresh and

Metacritic has 74 % of whatever their scale is.

The film hasn't even come out. How is there even

a rating for it? This just goes to show you how

like jacked the rating systems are. I mean, looking

at the Orville against Star Trek Discovery, you

get to see that anyway because the critics pan

the Orville as like this worst show ever and

have raving reviews for Discovery and yet I kind

of think it's the other way around. You can definitely

tell who's kind of trying to save their credentials

and who's actually reviewing it because they

like it, but that's just personal thought on

that. I will say one thing, I, sponsors or not,

if I don't like something in a film, If I've

been given access to it, if I've been given a

DVD for whatever, I'm not gonna just rate it

based on the fact that, hey, they gave it to

me, it's awesome, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

If I think it's crap and I think that there could

have been done. more things done with it, I will

read it that way. I know I've kinda gone off

on a tangent with downsizing, but I just think

that this Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, Metacritic scores,

I think the days of scoring, while they're still

pertinent to an extent, if you know the person

who's reviewing it and you enjoy their review

scale, that you can kind of gauge it that way.

I can see where that would make sense of following

the review, but if you generally don't mesh with

the reviewer as far as their review score, then

they're almost kind of useless. And I know everybody's

got their own opinions of stuff and the ratings

and whatnot, but that's how I can always tell

a film I'm gonna enjoy. is the lower the score

on IMDB Rotten Tomatoes Metacritic more than

likely I'm gonna really enjoy it and then if

it's a certain film like Star Wars it doesn't

matter across the board everybody's gonna enjoy

it so it's it's kind of one of those situations

where you just kind of have to know what you

like and the numbers be damned so So getting

into The last bit here on the iPhone Star Trek

and HD standards episode of altered geek Brad

also says that it's For one, it's easier for

them to comment on Facebook, which I'm perfectly

fine with whatever method anybody wants to comment

whether it's Facebook Twitter The website posts

because I know that there's like a multitude

of them I know Facebook is generally an easier

beast to to conquer for everyone Involved, but

he says I'm not even going to try and act like

a truck fan. I enjoy the films, but that's where

my love of it ends Being in Australia. We get

got the first three episodes of discovery here

on Netflix That was two weeks ago, and it doesn't

seem like episode four is coming anytime soon

But I'm enjoying it as a new sci -fi show. I'm

pretty sure it's been mentioned that they were

being a show Explanation for the tech looking

different to TOS We will have to wait and see

and I kind of commented that Well, I agree There's

it's it's so choppy And I'm gonna read through

the rest of it, but he says yeah You know as

far as releasing episodes here you get it on

the CBS app I hate the all access thing. I think

it's garbage He says yeah, I'd heard about the

Klingons being different. I thought it extended

tech also I'd still be interested in seeing how

season one goes. I'm still interested in seeing

how season one goes as well But I don't have

high hopes as a whole like I'm enjoying what

we're seeing so far, but Quick 20 second spoilers

right here for discovery episode 4 but The McGuffin

is the space creature they capture at the end

of episode 3 and It's supposed to be the supercomputer

navigational chart and they hook it up with Space

nipple tweaker and feed it pixie dust to go across

the galaxy So if that isn't the most weirdest

thing in the galaxy, I have no idea So Now that

I've gotten that out of the way, he says, I wonder

if fans would accept a dated and retro set for

the ship internals, because I kind of mentioned

that it's going to be hard to make the connection

and jump here. And I said, it's kind of hard

to say. I think there's a balance that could

have been achieved to give it a new yet classic

look. Then look at all the fan projects, such

as the TOS era stuff. There was Axanar, there

was... Star Trek continues, which is the only

one that still survived miraculously. He says,

I guess another example is aliens. Prometheus

and Covenant being set a few years before alien

ships were different. I get one's oil rig and

one's a research ship, but even an alien's military

ship should be more technical than anything else

and they didn't have holograms. I can kind of

see that, but Starfleet... It had its powerhouses

and I'm not saying that there weren't other ships

out in the fleet besides Constellation and Constitution

class starships because there were But they were

just few and far between seen But I don't think

that and I think like I said in future imperfect

I think the big McGuffin here with Discovery

is the fact that the ship is called discovery

and I think that the fact that It's Now one of

a kind in this universe Kind of leads it to be

like this only experimental powerhouse that they

have left But even in that that huge space battle

with the Klingons in episode 2 the majority of

the ships had the Kelvin aesthetic and didn't

resemble anything close to the aesthetic of,

they look more like they should fit in Star Trek

Generations, or not Generations, Nemesis Deep

Space Nine timeline than they should've here.

And that's kind of where my pet peeve is, is

like there's a lot of it that's way too shiny

and there's too much going on in a sense, so

it just bothers me. So yeah, that's kind of my

thoughts on the stuff going on right now with...

with Discovery so be sure to let me know what

you guys think as far as the the new the new

Star Wars trailer and Star Trek Discovery and

yeah just comment on the episode post Facebook

Twitter wherever you want just get a hold of

me and I'll read it on the next episode and and

reply so until next time I've been Steve and

C Phillips Get altered, get geeky, with the Altered

Geeks.
