About this Episode

We examine the current wave of Hollywood reboots, sequels, and remakes, questioning if these franchises are losing their original appeal. The conversation covers specific projects like The Jetsons, Galaxy Quest, Super Troopers 2, and Overboard. We also discuss automotive cybersecurity vulnerabilities, recent developments in quantum communication, the USB 3.2 standard, and the Paprika recipe management app.

On this episode of Altered Geek, we'll be talking

about reboots galore, what is it with the constant

reboots, and of course technology news and evolving

as a geek, along with a new segment of App of

the Week. All this and more on Altered Geek.

Hello and welcome to the Friday edition of Altered

Geek. I'm your host, Steve Phillips, and in this

episode I'll be talking about, well, how much

fun it's been to design the new version of the

show and how it's really not that much different

and yet more structured. So if you'd like to

interact with the show, there's multiple ways

you can do so, but the main one I'm going to

highlight is the hashtag What's Geeky to You

on Twitter. Use that hashtag and I'll get to

see it and use it for the next episode. You can

also comment on the episode post on the website

of altergeek .com or geekcastradio .com of what

you're geeking out with this week and your questions,

comments, and suggestions. Without further ado,

I'm going to get into a little bit of the feedback

that we've kind of missed over the past few weeks,

not only from the brief hiatus between 200 and

201, Uh, but, uh, the fact we didn't even cover

it since really 199 or 198. So, uh, first up

we have Tim Silvers. So, in this particular one,

it's from episode 199. He says, hey guys, I just

listened to the show, really enjoyed the discussions,

felt like the good old days of alter geek. Uh,

regarding s - And then this was regarding the

information of the suicide of the front man for

Licken Park, saying that it was sad. I've been

affected by suicide with two family members having

taken their lives. It's devastating. I appreciate

Mike's sincere thoughts on the subject and him

sharing his experiences. I hope everyone dealing

with depression can get help, which I totally

agree and I'm glad Mike shares it whenever he

gets the chance, whenever something unfortunate

like this comes up. Because especially with all

the sad stuff going on in the world today, it's

just unfortunate to see things like this happen.

So, you know, if you ever need help, you ever

need conversation, just reach out. That's the

main thing. So he also says, Mike, definitely

watch the Jungle Book live action film because

we were talking about Disney's live action adaptations.

He says it is easily the best of the Disney live

-action adaptations. He has not seen Beauty and

the Beast, but what they did with the Jungle

Book is amazing. He said Cinderella was just

okay. Well, you got to figure too, that was a

Tim Burton film, so it's gonna be kind of hokey.

I know that they're doing another one, I think

it's Dumbo, which it's gonna be Tim Burton, so

it's gonna be kind of freaky too, which kind

of makes sense. He says, and I agree that it

is ridiculous that this is the new trend, but

the films have been hugely successful, so we

all get more, as Disney confirmed at D23. I'm

excited for the Pixar sequels, although I question

the need for Toy Story 4. I think they had a

perfect wrap up in 3. The Incredibles 2 sounds

great, and I'm surprised it's taken them this

long. Totally agree with you on that. Incredibles

2 should have been done years ago. Toy Story

4, I kind of agree with you there. I think that

wrapping up that and bookending it, especially

with all the actors getting as old as they are,

it's gonna kind of make it hard to keep going

with it. I know it was hugely successful, but

they should wrap one of these into another, like

one of their other films, like Incredibles or

something like that, into another tent pole,

rather than having Toy Story support all of Pixar.

And I will say Cars 3 did really well as well,

so I don't know, like... usually the second films

in the franchises of Pixar anyway seem to be

a little weaker so every odd number kind of like

the opposite of the Star Trek films which you

can also listen to those over on Geekcast radio

I was on movie we can review with TF2 and Mike

and we covered the first six Star Trek films

in one episode yes that that will be coming out

soon just in time for Star Trek discovery So

Mike and I had a lot of fun talking about the

first six films and kind of getting into a little

bit of that. In addition, we'll also have the

TNG films and Kelvin Universe films coming out

around the same time. So stay tuned for that.

He also says that, you know, like I said about

Cars 2, and he says finding Dory was not necessary.

And as Mike said, it was already a forgotten

film, which, yeah, totally forgotten that. So

moving on to another bit of feedback. This one

is from episode 200. Tim Silvers also says on

that particular episode that he was looking forward

to listening to that since he missed out on the

live event. Again, I'll be trying to do these

more often, more live events at least once a

month if possible. It just kind of depends on

my guests. And I also have guests on segments,

just not this particular episode. I was a little

rushed for episodes this week, so... I had to

do a little bit of MWIRE, so... Brad Mull says

on episode 200, great point, where executive

producers escape the noose, where directors,

writers, and composers are vilified by fans.

Which... I will say with the advent of social

media, the tensions, whether it be pop culture,

political, or just life in general, people have

just gotten more rabid and easier to trigger.

But... As far as the the executive producers

and and writers and and everything There's there's

a lot that people kind of just look aside the

writer director and the actors usually get destroyed

by fans when they don't like something and it's

kind of funny because it's kind of a joint effort

and especially when you get somebody like Spielberg

that's a part of something such as Transformers

and the movies are terrible but they're box -office

successes as far as monetary value. It's kind

of interesting that they just kind of give them

a pass and don't really bring it up. There was

also that other producer that works with Michael

Bay on quite a bit and he had his own form. I

can't remember his name at this time, but he

was getting lambasted too with the first, second,

third films and then kind of disappeared a little

bit. But yeah Spielberg Yeah The Transformers

films that's probably the best way of referencing

the fact that he's credited executive producer

in all five, and it's just a paycheck, but Totally

agree with you on there. He says well done on

200 episodes, and here's to 200 more I completely

agree with you although I might actually hit

the next hundred by by This time next year, which

would be kind of awesome hitting five years and

500 episodes, or not 500 episodes, 300 episodes,

my fault. I sometimes forget. I've done so many

podcasts in the last nine years that it's gotten

difficult to discern how many I've actually done.

I actually have no idea how many I've done, which

will be interesting when I hit a certain threshold

that Optimus Solo will let me know on when I'm

getting close. Get to record that on a geek cast

radio podcast of where We are we're going to

end up I Know he's he's done quite a few blanchard.

I have no idea how many he's done He's probably

done more than I have well obviously with the

amount of shows he's on But it's it's it's it's

a fun ride. I'll say that And then this last

episode on 201 Again, Bradmull comments, he says,

interesting you haven't gotten the Atari or Mega

Drive mini systems over there yet. Yeah, I'm

kind of a little bit confused as far as that.

I've not... I've not seen them. I mean, I've

seen them, but not the ones that they're talking

about. I think I've seen the Mega Drive. We've

got a lot of knockoffs over here in America,

so I'm not really sure where it all goes, to

be honest. These are supposed to be more official,

so I guess we'll see. He says it's odd that NES

Mini sold out in a week, yet other two are still

in stock and have more games on them. Goes to

show why Atari and Sega lost the video game wars.

I think it also kind of is just poor marketing,

and I think Nintendo's built this kind of almost

Apple -like fan base where they can kind of gather

anybody and get them to just pay because it's

the name. Whereas I'm not really oriented towards

a name, I'm oriented towards what I'm used to

in the features. So, that's usually what drives

me to that. So, next up on the episode we have...

What I'm geeking out about. So, as I've mentioned

ad nauseum for weeks, I've been playing Star

Trek Online, trying to raise enough energy credits...

to purchase a specific set of ships and I play

basically every night and I've done this on and

off again since I've been playing the game since

February, but I've been doing this since the

my my return from vacation and I've Managed to

blitz through I had 20 million EC before I went

on vacation as of two days ago I had three hundred

and fifty... No, three hundred and forty -five

million in game. And I had two keys left that

I hadn't sold yet. And my wife's getting so tired

of hearing about the keys because I'm like, I'm

sitting there in the game selling these keys

for I'm buying low, selling high, that kind of

thing. And she's like, I have no idea what you're

even talking about and why you're talking about

these keys all of a sudden and so much. And then

it just kind of made me realize that I'm engrossed

entirely too much in a game. So I actually managed

to purchase the Kelvin Heavy Command Constitution

class. So I have the Kelvin Enterprise now in

game, which is a spectacular ship. It takes a

lot more to damage it compared to my Odyssey

class, Enterprise F. But it's a lot of fun. It's

a little bit anti -climatic once you actually

purchase the item It's kind of like gambling

and then when you you come up and get what you

want or you come up empty -handed It's kind of

like oh I've done it. I've achieved the goal

and then now I need to set a new one, and I don't

really know what I want So I'm rebuilding my

EC now. I managed to get a couple more keys.

I'm at I think 20 something million again, which

is is great because I didn't have all that much

before. But I'm back up to 20 -something million.

I'll probably keep saving up and see how high

I can get and then just kind of purchase uniforms

and other gear that I want now at this point.

But it's been fun. So another thing that's kind

of interesting is podcast movement is going on

next week, which is a convention for podcasters

in Anaheim, California. I don't know how many

of you have been interested in this that are

podcasters or would like to know more about the

platform. I myself would love to go to this.

I know my job is going to be going to this to

kind of represent the company and to be there

to learn more of the effects of podcasting. And

there's quite a few different companies. There's

people from Blog Talk Radio, I Heart Radio, SoundCloud,

Stitcher, actual podcasters, such as people that

are various self -help podcast groups. The Audacity

to Podcast, the Podcasters Roundtable, the...

School of broadcasting or podcasting various

various ones like that. So anyways, I I'm very

interested Going to one of these I don't necessarily

have the money or the method to get out there

on my own But I would love to do this and and

hopefully if all goes well, I'll get to do this

next year so It's it's definitely something that

I've aspired to I'd love to learn more about

podcasting and how to upgrade my My specialty

in my craft here I've been kind of flying by

the seat of my pants on a little bit of the show

stuff and it kind of shows in some regard to

some it doesn't but I Would love to learn more

about the platform more than I already know just

from what I've learned over the years But Yeah,

it's been interesting. And then, of course, we've

got the news of SoundCloud, which is no longer

in the red. They were acquired by a particular...

I can't remember the name of the company, but

it survived kind of at the last, the 11th hour.

They've reportedly secured 170 million in investments,

so they're here to stick around, but it's kind

of... What capacity? So a Berlin based company,

which is SoundCloud, was laying off most of their

workforce, like almost 40%. And they weren't

sure how they were going to keep going. I know

of quite a few people that use SoundCloud as

an aggregator for their RSS feeds. A lot of people

have been trying to kind of jump ship. from it

with reasonable reason if the company's going

under, but they're not anymore. So, yeah, they're

definitely turning the thing around, so we'll

see where they go in the future. So with that,

I'm going to take a quick break, come back with

the app of the week. And we're back, so in jumping

into this I actually recently saw this this pretty

neat app that my wife actually showed to me and

It's mainly for people that like to cook But

the the nice part about it is it's called I had

no idea what my wife was even talking about when

she brought this up, but it's called paprika

and what it is is it's it's desktop app, along

with for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Kindle Fire, Android,

lets you organize recipes, make meal plans, and

create grocery lists. And Paprika's built -in

browser, essentially, you can save recipes from

anywhere on the web. They actually have this

thing where you can create a specific shortcut,

and it links it back to your account on your

program. And it saves it. And when you type up

the information or you copy it from the web,

you have the ability to add an image of whatever

the food is, the name, a rating that you have

for it. You get to put in the cook time, the

prep time, instructions, nutrition, the ingredients,

and then you can actually create grocery lists

from this thing. which my wife absolutely loves

because normally what she's had to do is she

has to dig out these recipes while a lot of them

aren't digital. So it's not a lot of fun for

her to go through. So we're going through and

we're digitally typing these all up in this program

because she likes to access them from her phone.

It's proven to be a really useful tool. So it

will sync through their free cloud sync and go

between all the devices. So if she types it all

up on the computer, it'll sync to her phone app,

which has been a lot of stress -free usage. And

like I said, you can create a grocery list with

it where you can, it'll tell you how much of

the food you need or what you need. to actually

make the meals. You can also meal plan by dropping

them into a calendar, and so you can kind of

see what you were gonna plan on cooking that

day, which it's another feature she really loves.

And it wasn't that expensive. It was $19 .99

for the Windows version of the program, and for

Android it was $4 .99. So all together, about

$25, it's not really that bad. But like I said,

it does the... The meal plan in the Smart Grocery

List kind of helps you cook between the active

stuff. You can also scale. It will calculate,

because it hones in on the numbers in the creation

of the food, the ingredients. And you can set

how many servings you want to have. And it will

adjust the measurements accordingly. So she really

loved that feature as well So like if she's gonna

make say a batch of cookies and has has a certain

amount and she wants to do two servings of it

She can change it and it will automatically double

everything so she doesn't have to self calculate

it in her head Like I said, it's really cool

and and she can also save groceries or not groceries

the recipes from random websites on the internet,

so Definitely a must -have if you're somebody

that likes to cook or you like to have all your

your measurements in there So you could you there's

a lot you can do with it. She's she's really

loving this app. She just started with it a couple

days ago, so I Definitely recommend that So moving

into altered tech Yes, altered tech I just came

across some interesting information. There's

apparently a deep flaw in cars, and this comes

from Wired .com, that lets hackers shut down

safety features in your car. Now if you remember,

a couple of years ago, two security researchers

showed that they could hijack moving Jeeps on

a highway. Both automakers and cybersecurity

industry people, have accepted that connected

cars are vulnerable to hacking as anything else

linked to the internet. But one new car hacking

trick illustrates that while awareness helps,

protection can be extremely complex. So they've

discovered this vulnerability in vehicle networks

that it's nearly universal. that can be exploited

while bypassing the auto industry's attempts

at anti -hacking mechanisms. Apparently Trend

Micro published a blog highlighting a little

-noticed automotive hacking technique which it

presented to Divma Security Conference in Germany

last month. They're saying that researchers at

Linklayer Labs and Polytechnic University of

Milan found that a fundamental security issue

in the CAN protocol that car components use to

communicate and send commands to one another

within the car's network. One that would allow

a hacker to access the car's internals to shut

off key automated components. So you can disable

airbags, anti -lock brakes, door locks, steal

the car. So basically, it's taken that security

measures that we used to take. For granted about

ten years ago that when they weren't connected

to the internet Because if you remember anything

90s and before could be You didn't have a chip

in your key so you could just get in the car

and start the car And it didn't really matter

you could easily steal it I used to work at a

car lot. We actually had a 90s vehicle That was

it was like a 98 suburban We used them as blockers

to block at nighttime so people wouldn't drive

through the parking lot or trying to steal anything.

Well, we came in in the morning, the vehicle

was missing. And we had the key, but there was

no broken glass. Somebody just easily popped

something in between, popped the door locks,

got inside, started it, and it was gone. We never

saw it again. And any of the newer vehicles,

they have chips in them, so they had security

measures that won't start unless they have the

chip. Well, newer vehicles because they're doing

away with the keys on a lot of them and it's

all by key fob presence so it's a wireless signal.

They can easily be stolen. They actually tell

you not to use the key fob locks and unlocks

when you're out in public because if somebody

has a device, it can scan in that signal and

duplicate it and they can get into your vehicle

when you're not around. which that was reported

a couple of years ago too and I Again, it's something

that I don't really pay too close of attention

to but I maybe I probably should if if it's that

case I'm lucky in the sense that I have a lease

that's a 2016 Chevy Equinox and I don't think

that it could be Hijacked based on the fact I

don't have internet access hooked up to it But

I'm sure that's something that could easily be

turned on from remote access. I don't have the

wireless network hooked up. I don't have the

router hooked up that's in the car that comes

built in. So I think that it would not be an

issue. I also have a 2013 Equinox, which doesn't

have internet capabilities. So it's a little

bit less likely to get hacked into, but I'm sure

that it's still possible. But they're saying

that the researcher's attack is from a practical

threat to cars on the road today. It's a denial

of service attack that turns off components,

not one that hijacks to take them over with basic

driving functions, like accelerating, braking,

or steering, as the Jeep hackers did in 2015.

Or what Chinese hackers from working for Tencent

more recently achieved with a Tesla. But it's

not fully remote attack. It requires the hacker

to already have initial access to the card's

network, which again is through the infotainment

system, Wi -Fi or cell phone connection or an

insecure gadget plugged into the OBD port under

its dashboard. So it's still possible, but it's

not entirely possible. It's still a vulnerability

that needs to be fixed. This is another reason

why I am not a big proponent of Having all of

these gadgets in my car This goes along hand

-in -hand with even the the autopilot stuff that

they're working on for vehicles at this time

I just don't I don't trust it. I don't really

want to see any of this in my car which in that

regard see my brothers both have 90s vehicles

they have both 90s 93 and a 95 silhouette Oldsmobile

van which they've both had their vehicles stolen

once and they've gotten them back and put in

other security features and they use the the

bar that connects to the brake pedal and the

the steering wheel but it's still possible to

break those and still steal the car my brothers

had both of their cars like they destroyed the

doors to get in and drove off like it's and we

managed to find them again and this was years

ago but if a 90s vehicle is not that secure and

then you're adding in these security features

and you're making it all wirelessly connected

for convenience purposes of course I just don't

The more tech we add into these the more insecure

they're going to become as again Just like the

90s vehicles and to me honestly the 2006 to about

2014 is probably the most secure you're gonna

have a vehicle because it's before It's where

they added the chips, but it's before they had

all of this wireless technology now granted if

they still use a key nowadays most of them are

laser cut from the factory so they're near impossible

to duplicate, you can't go to a dealer and have

them cut, they have to physically be sent out

to the factory to have them done. But I just,

in this regard, I cannot stress enough that there's

way too much in these cars. Not to mention the

repair bill when something electronic goes wrong,

because it's a game of apples and oranges figuring

out what's wrong. I don't know, what are your

guys' thoughts on this? What are your thoughts

on having too much of the electronics in the

car computers? For me, it's just a bit too much.

I could do without it. So, speaking of hacking,

there is a new first secure quantum communications

being tested via microsatellite. Scientists have

demonstrated laser communications between a microsatellite

and a ground station while using the quantum

nature of photons to secure the data being transmitted.

National Institute of Information and Communications

Technology in Japan recently published in a Nature

Photonics demonstration that the unhackable quantum

communications technology known as quantum key

distribution edges closer to quantum computing

and safer. data transmission. But they're saying

that because of this, current methods of securing

transmitted data may be rendered obsolete as

they continue with this research. It says when

quantum computers are developed, the security

of conventional communications will be compromised

since current cryptography, sorry, having a little

bit of a speech issue right now. is based only

on computational complexity. So they're saying

as soon as they can manage to develop this in

a more usable state that this will probably take

effect. It's starting to sound very Star Trek

-y as far as quantum computing, quantum communications,

and I love the word quantum just because quantum

torpedo, Star Trek. I can't help it. So they're

doing this research in Japan, China, Europe,

Canada, and the United States, so there's a huge

interest in it as they develop these particles

that can transmit information. Any chance that

they can create faster, more secure data transmission

is always a bonus. but there's always going to

be somebody that figures out how to hack it.

And while I'm talking about space, the solar

eclipse of 2017 that's going to hit the broad

part of the United States between California

and Maine, well, I'm just going edge to edge

of the country, it's going to be along the middle

of the United States, but the rest of the United

States will have it. Michigan is supposed to

have about a 70 to 75 percent part of that total

eclipse and it's supposed to hit here around

about two in the afternoon type of thing so I'll

probably have fun with that maybe I'll go out

with a camera in my front yard and set it to

record as things get dark and as it comes back

make sure that you don't look directly at it

I've seen enough reports of people complaining

that despite the the eyeglass stuff or that the

special paper it's not going to really save your

eyes all that much but it's definitely gonna

be a cool event that the entire United States

will get to share in on at least one cooperative

unified vision as it were As far as other innovations,

this is unmatchable. A strong repair wrap that

can fix almost anything. They're claiming that

it's 100 times stronger than duct tape. So it's

called the fiber fix repair wrap and it comes

in a three -roll bundle. The repair wrap is 100

times stronger than duct tape and lets you easily

fix a multitude of things from broom cracks to

split pipes to snapped garden tools. They're

claiming that the fiber fix is the home improvement

solution you've been waiting for. I think it

would be pretty cool to try out. So, I don't

know about you guys, but I break a lot of crap

at my house. And looking at it, it looks like,

in a sense, almost like a fabric, like a stretchable

type of fabric that condenses around it. Almost

like a cast. It very much looks like a cast.

And they're showing, for instance, one of them

being used inside of a car to go over the edges

of a pipe in the car, like one of the plastic

rubberized ones. Another picture they show is

of a PVC pipe being replaced. They said all you

have to do is slip on gloves, soak the repair

wrap in water, apply it to any surface that needs

repair, wait 10 minutes, and your handyman work

is complete. They're saying it comes in three

rolls and comes with sandpaper, gloves, and vinyl

strips that you'll need to repair anything that's

broken. And it costs $18 .99, which isn't really

that bad. I might give that a try if I actually

see that in my local Home Depot or something.

Mostly because, again, there's going to come

a point where I break something. You can buy

it on the Mashable shop for $12 .99 right now

it looks like No, I'm not being paid for any

of this is just it looks interesting to me So

I don't know it's it's something it's something

really cool regardless I I do break a lot of

stuff around my house, especially when it comes

to Equipment So I'll have to give that a shot

next time I break something They're kind of rounding

out some of the tech information The USB 3 .2

standard is coming out soon. It's more rounded

USB platform none of the the the rhombus type

shape that it's got right now or the Apple it's

it's a completely USB New standard anyways, it's

confirmed that it'll be out in September and

that those new USB -C cables don't really qualify

anymore. But yeah, there's so many different

USB equivalent endings to it that it's not even

funny. I have a multitude of them. You can also

get adapters, which probably would help if you

need to convert it to something else. Because

USB originally came out the early 90s. I remember

my first computer that had one and It was it

was one of the custom -built ones and we were

like, this is a huge deal USB 1 .1 or 1 .0 and

It arrived in 96 of January with speed of 1 .5

megabits The standard was was started in 94,

but USB 2 .0 followed in April of 2000 with 480

megabit a second And it worked great for an external

hard drive, joysticks. And then in 2008, they

came up with USB 3 .0, which rates are five gigabits

per second with backward compatibility. The 3

.1 is the potential of up to 10 gigabytes of

data per second, even if the peripherals don't

get it. Which it also supports providing 100

watts of power Which is why us laptops can now

be charged via USB Which I don't happen to have

one that can be charged USB. I have one of the

older standards I Actually have a lot of USB

3 .0 gear and 2 .0 gear, but I don't have anything

that's the new 3 .1 or the charging But the The

3 .1 came out, I'm trying to find this information.

It's not really here. They're saying USB -C,

yeah, C, has been designed as the port and connector

of the future, one that will connect with everything

from phones to laptops and work both ways as

well. They're saying the next couple of years,

USB - C and 3 .1 will become the standard on

electronics gear and at least until the next

roll -up of the 3 .2 standard, which they're

saying again, it's a USB certified charger for

45 watts, 10 gigabits per second. I don't know,

it says theoretically it could get a maximum

rate of 20 gigabits per second. Which again is

useful if you're transferring a lot of data And

charging with a laptop. It's it's just future

-proofing. So I Don't know. I hope my next laptop

has it But that's Neither here nor there There's

there's just so many changes in technology as

soon as you get your hands on it. It's outdated

So with that I'm gonna take a quick break be

back after this with The unfortunate state of

reboots today And we're back so Today in reboots

It just seems like we can't ever get away from

these they're everywhere. I was searching on

Twitter last night and All I could find is stinking

reboots. There's always a reboot always a reboot

for just about anything now. I don't even know

what to think anymore. It's getting absurd, the

amount of reboots that are out there. I mean,

we talked about the Jetsons getting greenlit,

and of course now there's news about it in regard

to the fact that they're moving ahead with the

pilot now. I can't fathom it. It's getting a

bit ridiculous with the amount of reboots. I

hope they don't reboot Batman again anytime soon.

But yeah, ABC has officially ordered the pilot

for the live -action Jetsons. Whatever. So yeah,

they've picked it up. Robert Zemeckis is still

set to executive produce. I can't imagine what

it'll be like, but I'm hoping that they can at

least keep it true to form with the Jetsons.

But again, you're talking about Zemeckis who

did Back to the Future. So if it's a little bit

inspired by Back to the Future 2, I would be

set with that. And again, it's supposed to be

set in 2062. The original series was this one's

gonna be 2162. They wanted to go another hundred

years to kind of Bridge that gap because we're

not that far off at this point Yeah, I'm gonna

be If Yeah, I would be 76 in night in 2062 that's

I I may or may not still be alive by then Who

knows what we'll see though So yeah, there's

that and then Amazon is moving forward with their

Galaxy Quest series and they've hired a new writer

I'm excited for this one Because I like space

travel late. That's why I'm excited for the Orville

with with Seth MacFarlane, even though it's gonna

be a joke of a series. It looks more Star Trek

than Discovery does to me at this point So therefore

it looks more fun Galaxy Quest is the perfect

knockoff of Star Trek And so if you're having

a TV series of this and the Ornville, and then

having Star Trek Discovery, we're kind of in

heaven with space travel. I'm still gonna give

Discovery a chance, don't get me wrong, but the

Ornville in this news kind of makes me excited.

The streaming service has hired writer -actor

-comedian Paul Scheer from the League to write

the script for the series, which is... It could

be he's funny. So like I could see him writing

the series kind of true to form He's gonna be

replacing The original writer of the film who

is Robert Gordon But yeah, it's described as

a new take on the cult movie that starred Tim

Allen Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver There's

no word on if any of the original stars will

return some of the other cast members including

Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell,

and Enrico Collin Tony. So yeah, the original

film came out in 99. Man, it's been a long time.

But if you look at Tim Allen's hair, you can

actually kind of notice the look he's got. He

looks very much like he was from that time period.

But. Yeah, I'm hoping that they can capture the

essence of the original film. And I guess that

they were going to do a... There were talks of

doing a series and a sequel at some point in

the past, but yeah. They they were planning on

in 2016 anyway Rockwell said that they were planning

to sign up and then Alan Rickman passed away

and Tim Allen wasn't available because the last

man standing And everybody's schedule was all

weird So I'm hoping if they do go with I'm hoping

that it's not a reboot I'm hoping that because

Tim Allen is available now with no last man standing.

I would love to see him reprise his role as Captain

Taggart I'm surprised I remember that off the

top of my head. I haven't seen the movie in a

good couple years now. I should probably go back

and watch that. It would be fun. I don't remember

if we've done it on M -Wire yet, but if we haven't,

we should. But I hope that they bring back the

original cast, and if they do, they come up with

a nice way to handle Rickman's missing character.

And then Transformers 5, they had concept art

for Optimus Primal, which is neither here nor

there. I don't totally hate it, but I don't want

to see a mechanized robot. I want to see them

look like a giant freaking real gorilla that

turns into a robot. I want to see something good

if they're going to go that route. And I honestly

don't want to see it live action. I'd love to

see it CG. other entertainment news, Arnold Schwarzenegger

is confirming his role in Terminator 6, which

I'm kind of surprised they're even going that

route, making a sixth movie based on the fact

that Genesis flopped. Well, I did like what they

did with it and kind of redoing the T -800's

role in the film and kind of going back further

and having an aged one that became a T -1000.

If you haven't seen it, I'm sorry, but he becomes

a T -1000 at some point. But he's not going to

be back as a T -800. It'll be the first time

he's not a Terminator. He'll actually be playing

the role of a character which they based the

T -800 Model 101's appearance off of. So that

has me more intrigued than him playing a Terminator

itself. because then you get to have the actual

Terminators and you can have a little different

backstory in having Arnold becoming that. And

remember when I was talking about Super Troopers

2 a few weeks back and I was planning on possibly

talking to the cast? Which I may still do, but...

And we went for almost a year with no news. Well,

matter of fact, yesterday... There was news that

super troopers 2 is to open on 4 2018 obviously

little the the pot day of the year 420 So yeah,

they're They're gonna be coming out of that I'm

kind of excited of it because I like the original

super troopers so That's at least good that we

know when it's coming out now. The date is also

held by Dwayne Johnson's rampage, which I'm not

sure what that is, but And a remake, here we

go, another reboot, of Kurt Russell and Goldie

Hawn's comedy Overboard. Why? Why do they...

I love Hollywood to some extent, but that's why

the image for the episode is a picture of Oprah.

You get a reboot! You get a reboot! You get a

reboot! Everyone gets reboots! Just because I'm

sick of it. Hollywood has no original ideas left,

and unfortunately, you would think that they've

learned. Yes, some of the TV show reboots work

out fine. The film reboots always pale in comparison

to the original. They always do. Look at RoboCop.

Yes, it was better aesthetically, but it wasn't

better than the original. Look at Total Recall.

Aesthetically better, but not better. It's...

I don't know. I don't know how I feel about this.

I mean, they did the Mummy reboot and it flopped.

Transformers 5 flopped. It's not a reboot, but

it was a sequel. People are getting burned out

by sequelitis and reboots. It's just... Leave

the old stuff alone, create something new, or

create a new entry in the franchise while it's

not a reboot. It's a continuation. Many years

later, but I mean look at Die Hard 5. That flopped

too. So I mean Die Hard 4 was good, but 5 was

terrible. And that's why we haven't seen a Die

Hard 6 yet. We still haven't seen Beverly Hills

Top 4 yet. It's... I think that some of the studios

are starting to double think this, this whole

sequel thing. Before reading this article on

Super Troopers, I didn't even know an overboard

reboot was coming. It's I don't know. I don't

know how I feel about it. It's to me I feel like

I'm what you know like the whole thing with Rogue

One or Han Solo I don't really need the movie

the Obi -Wan Kenobi movie, which is in the works

now at Lucasfilm and Stephen Daldry is in talks

to direct And of course, we're gonna have Ewan

McGregor which would explain why? He's been in

kind of quiet hush hush about the whole thing

and they're gonna probably play him during the

the time span between Episode three and four

which will be nice and you'll get to see a more

grizzled older Obi -Wan kind of like in Rebels

While I'm all for that because I like the character

and I think that there's a big time span of history

missing from Kenobi I don't know. I mean that

one I find more necessary than a straight -up

reboot or a sequel of something I just I have

no idea why we're getting so many blasted reboots,

other than the fact that they're hoping to make

a quick buck off of it, because they own the

rights to it. And while I realize that nobody

really watches the old stuff anymore, how necessary

is it for us to have all of these reboots all

over the place? Like, you know, it's... There's

only so much people can take. And I've even been

trying to stay away from the reboots. I've been

trying to watch some of the more original stuff.

I mean, they're trying to reboot Saw this October.

It's a sequel. It takes place 10 years later,

but still, it's a sequel. When are we gonna move

past creating more sequels and more reboots and

start coming up with more original stuff and

creating new tent pools? I mean, the Lone Ranger.

That was a flop. Pirates of the Caribbean hasn't

really been able to recapture what it made in

the first one. We're just kind of, we're replaying

through Hollywood's game of, it's basically game

of thrones in film. Let's see what we can revive

and kill off again. What are you guys thoughts

on this? I honestly don't know. where we're going

with this. I mean, they even do this in video

games. Look at Mass Effect and Andromeda. It

paled in comparison to the first three. Look

at Sonic games. They have Sonic Mania coming

out, and it's basically a throwback to the 2D

era of Sonic games. And it's supposed to... Be

a remake of Genesis era 2d Sonic the Hedgehog

games with refurbished stages that and new ones

that pay tribute to the old ones But because

of that it's it's created a resurrection and

done it right because people want Things that

aren't altered. I quit playing Sonic when he

went 3d So, I mean in that essence late Reboots,

I feel like they're just a giant fail. I really

do look for you guys' comments on this because

I'm not sure how I feel about having so many

sequels anymore. Is it warranted? Is it needed?

And I'm not trying to attack any of the content

that we have that's come out that's been good.

There's been plenty of reboots and sequels that

have done things in the essence of revitalizing

a franchise, but I don't know if I would put

my entire stake in them. They're redoing the

monsters. It's only a matter of time before we

see another Flintstones. There always comes a

time where a reboot happens or will happen. And

I get it. Same token, though. I mean, we've even

got a Man vs. Fu to reboot? And it started a

couple weeks ago, but still. Like, nothing will

beat the Adam Richman version. I feel like I

got to watch everything I needed to know just

from that series. Like, I don't need a follow

-up. In Star Trek Discovery, they're even saying

now that they're Season 2. may become more serialized

yet. They may skip and it may jump time. They

may have some of the same crew. They might go

in that route that was originally planned for

the series. They're saying season two may have

the the fallout of the Klingon War from the first

season and they may follow through with what

the original executive producer had in mind.

I don't know. I'm kind of burnt out on the sequels.

I've kind of not put a lot of stock in them.

I've been trying to watch a lot of stuff that's

not sequels anymore. And if I do, I see them

after they've come out on DVD and I'll go to

my local family video and I'll rent them or my

red box because I still have those. Or I just

wait for me to hit streaming. I don't really

see an entire reason To kind of go in that To

go to the theater for these anymore My my interest

level has dropped so much I don't even care about

about all of this content like I care but It's

because I feel like they're just pumping out

garbage back in the day We used to get you know

only so many films would come out to theater

Now we have so much to choose from that it makes

it difficult to choose unless you like that specific

franchise or you just want a certain type of

movie. And I get some of it to kind of shut your

brain off, but I don't see why we're continuing

in this direction. There's even a Christmas story

reboot coming. Granted, it's on Fox, and it's

gonna be a musical three hour thing, but still

it's a reboot. They did a Dirty Dancing reboot

on Fox too recently, and that flopped, because

it wasn't as good as the original. Nothing is

as good as the original. You can make improvements,

yes, in certain areas, but it's never gonna live

up to the hype of the original. So, I don't know.

I've spouted on long enough about this. On the

plus side, in 1947 on this day in tech history,

HP Incorporated was founded. It was incorporated

by William Hewlett and David Packard in Palo

Alto, California. I didn't know the company was

that old, honestly. So, what do you guys want

to talk about on the next episode? Send me your
