Off The Cuff
Microsoft E3 Press Conference Roundup

About this Episode
Thanks. And welcome to Off the Cuffs E3 special
presentation. For the first segment, I am your
host, Michael Powers. I'm joined by Joe Reed.
Hello. We will be discussing the Xbox One E3
conference, which just ended, so everything is
a gut reaction to what we saw Microsoft say on
stage. I have not been following around the internet
to see what other people have to say, so these
are our opinions and our opinions alone and we
may be wrong on some of this stuff but again
this is going off of what we heard on stage and
the few notes that i managed to take before i
realized i didn't care a lot about what they
were saying right um i guess to to start uh as
some people expected there was a new xbox 360
model announced um smaller uh presumably lighter
not necessarily faster uh they did not announce
a price And I have not looked up a price online
GameStop didn't have anything on it. I did peek
there to see so Not a whole lot we can say about
that except. It's another It's a smaller black
box and it says Xbox 360 on it, and it did appear
to have a disk drive Which is good. I was kind
of thinking that if they did another smaller
one They would remove the disk drive and just
have everything be download only But they announced
three games Coming out this year for the Xbox
360 from Microsoft. Anyways, there will probably
be more One is apparently a really popular free
-to -play game called World of Tanks It looked
I don't know. It was very frenetic crazy overwhelming
not exactly cartoony, but Just so frenetic that
it kind of had that cartoony atmosphere 15 on
15 online play And like Mike said, free to play,
but it wasn't scorched earth, so I didn't care.
It looked to me, I mean, it looked like fun,
but to me, it looked like you were playing on
a model set, which I think is what the appeal
of it looked like to me. Like a tabletop game
with real tanks. I have a feeling that it's going
to be like that, that you play to unlock this
real tank from World War II, Germany, la, la,
la, la. that's the kind of fun that a lot of
people are having with it are playing and unlocking
to get these weird tanks and then using them
to set up matches that are let's do this versus
this and see what happens let's all use this
ancient type of tank and see what happens and
and by playing to unlock being free to play you'll
actually also be able to spend real world dollars
To unlock tanks and stuff like that so I'm not
to mention along with the real -world dollars
Microsoft is also getting rid of space points
I Really I know I jumped ahead there, but I really
cannot stress how happy I am about that Yeah
Maybe I guess There was always that weird conversion
sixteen Hundred equals $20 yeah, I don't know
why that was ever why they ever thought that
was necessary with Don't know that was a good
idea. I think was just a fool to consumer Realist
I mean honestly, I think that's what it was was
like you you're not really aware of how much
you're spending on a game It's just you're you're
spending money to get points and so you you're
aware that there's a transaction there But when
you go to make a micro transaction or something
like that You're not really aware of how much
you're actually spending you don't know how much
400 points is when you buy that expansion, right?
But you know the smart person knows that's five
bucks But I for one am glad because Nintendo
and Sony they both do the real -world money Which
is you know that's I've always appreciated that
over the the space points Another game that they
showed off for the 360 was Max Curse of the Brotherhood
which to me kind of brought up References to
Psychonauts is what it really looked like to
me kind of a cross between Psychonauts and Oh
Frick that brilliant indie game limbo limbo.
Thank you I think I think it it may some of the
some of the on -screen UI suggested that it may
have some kind of connect integration yeah, there
were markers flitting around on the screen drawing
bridges and cutting things and Unless it's kind
of like a, um, what's that Nintendo game that
came with Rob the Robot? Um, Gyromite. Yeah,
unless it's like Gyromite where the character
just moves left to right and you manipulate the
environment for him. Huh. I don't know. I just
pulled that out of nowhere because it's kind
of like, well, it's kind of like if it's a Kinect
game, how can you use a control? Because it looked
like there was some platforming involved. So
it's kind of like, how can you control the character
and manipulate the world with the camera? I want
to see more asymmetrical co -op happening in
a lot of these games, and I think that would
be fun too. I'm holding the controller to do
the platforming, you're holding the controller
to draw these things, or using the Kinect in
the case of Microsoft. I want to see more asymmetrical
co -op happening. I can get behind that. The
last 360 game they announced, and I believe this
is coming to all platforms, it was actually Dark
Souls 2. I have no love for Dark Souls. I have
no hate for it either. I haven't played it. I
don't know. When I feel that way about the game,
I have to say that if it were actually good and
actually worth playing, I would have... Probably
played it right now because the people in my
circle of friends and interest group would would
have said yeah You need to play this game so
the fact that I haven't yet means I probably
wouldn't care if I did right I've heard I haven't
heard anything bad about I've heard like it's
it's good. It's grueling in that way that old
-school games are It's unforgiving and there's
like a little bit of skill involved in it But
you know I don't I don't know a whole lot I don't
want I don't want to say all that either because
like I said I haven't played it so Are you Just
kind of disappointed they didn't have more 360
things to show I'm I'm honestly I'm disappointed
in the whole next -gen thing and I can't decide
if it's because I'm old school and Too old school
to a point where I'm just can't get into this
new stuff Or if they really are just giving me
the same old thing that I've seen before You
know for the last two generations and just don't
care Because I've already seen it and so yeah,
I'm Terribly overwhelmed. I don't know what they
could have done to make me more excited I Don't
know do we do we discuss the price point because
that's a gigantic barrier. Well. I want to talk
about that at the end yeah But we can move on
to the Xbox one yeah now I made a list of the
games that they announced and I put a star next
to the ones that I that they either that they
said or I think are exclusives. And they did
announce a fair amount of games. I've got one,
two, three. I've got more than 10 here. And like
you pointed out, they didn't mention television
at all. No. And that's great. You know, they
did. They said exactly what they were going to
do, which is they showed off some games. The
big one, which they opened their conference off
with, was Metal Gear Solid 5. but that's not
an exclusive I think they said it will have surface
or smart glass exclusive content but that's about
it I mean the game looks good I mean I'm excited
for Metal Gear Solid 5 the more I think about
the Metal Gear series lately the more I'm ready
for a new one I mean the last one I played was
in 2008 which is Metal Gear Solid 4 I just went
on this huge I had a conversation with a a friend
who's a real Metal Gear Solid fan to figure out
where Metal Gear Solid 5 fits into the timeline.
And then I went to Wikipedia and found the Metal
Gear Solid timeline. And it's actually kind of
interesting how everything kind of weaves together.
Yeah, I once read the Wikipedia to that. And
afterwards, I was just as confused as I was when
I started. I know, right? Some of this makes
sense. Some of it still doesn't make sense. So
now I've I what was it? Metal Gear, Twin Snakes,
the one that was on PS1. For a time was in my
top fave top five favorite games of all time,
like two or three. Uh, and I loved it. I love
the way it kind of bent video gaming and broke
the walls and kind of creeped into your living
room while you're playing it with the controller
and the way it vibrates or, uh, how it read your
memory card. And I really enjoyed the game play
the stealth. Uh, but then when it got re -released
on game cube and I played it's like, this is
my third favorite game of all time. and just
it seemed I've always been kind of annoyed by
a lot of anime and how the characters speak and
ever since playing it again on GameCube it's
always had that who can love bloom on the battlefield
I don't know I'm a weary warrior with colors
in my eyes and and it I just I can't get into
it anymore I I don't know See, I kind of gloss
over that stuff. I look more at the... Obviously
what you're talking about is very much a part
of the Metal Gear franchise. But I kind of look
at it from the gameplay and the stealth aspects
of it, which I find the series to be fun in those
regards. And I find that stuff that you mentioned
to be like the lighthearted side of a game that
would otherwise be very depressing. So maybe
it kind of bounds itself out, in my opinion.
But like I said, I'm looking forward to it. I'm
just glad it's not an exclusive, as Major Nelson
accidentally said on Twitter and then later reversed
moments later. So for a second, I was kind of
getting a little nervous there. And then I was
like, oh. I don't want to have to buy this thing.
Yeah. You'll find out why later. The next thing
that they showed off was it was actually supposed
to be an Xbox 360 game which might explain why
It didn't really ruffle any of Joe's feathers
that well, yeah The one that debuted after that
was rise Which looked to me like a current -gen
game a really good -looking current -gen game,
but not an Xbox one game at all. It just did
not appear to be next gen. And on top of that,
it just seems like a very standard hack and slash
with quick time elements. There's nothing new
there. And I mean, I'm watching on mute the Spike
TV coverage of E3 and they're going on and on
about this game. Like this is the one that they're
choosing to spend 15 minutes after the presentation
on. It should be said that I I watched it streaming
Joe like you said he watched it on spike and
I don't I I don't think either one of these mediums
are Good to show you these games As we talked
about on like our last special podcast that you
know it it requires a considerable amount of
bandwidth in order for them to be able to deliver
the visuals to your home when they're not playing
directly connected to your TV. I think it took
way longer to say that than it needed to. But
there were some things in the rise demo that
kind of stood out, which was the clothing effects.
There was little if no clipping going on. Like
his hand was or his leg wasn't going through
his skirt or the metal plating over top of the
leather skirt. Like it wasn't, you know, colliding
with and passing through the leather. We should
point out, I think it's a Roman Gladiator looking
type game. It's made by Crytek. So it's running
on the Crysis 3 engine, which I guess confirms
that the Crytek engine does run on the Xbox One.
Duh. But yeah, it just seemed kind of like standard
fare. Like I said, it was supposed to be a 360
Connect title. Couldn't really get an idea of
how much the connect was being used in the game
Didn't look like much at all Yeah, so probably
will be some tacked on minigame thing like a
lot of those well in the The Xbox 360 reveal
video for it was I mean you basically stood in
front of your TV And you put your arm up for
your shield and you swung for your sword And
it was like a zel it was like one of the Wii
Zelda games without the motion controller Which
didn't address how you walked around the world
or anything like that, so I don't imagine you'd
be marching around your family room but You know
passing by that one Seemed like the next one
was kind of a nostalgia trip at least for you
and I yeah Killer Instinct was after that and
of everything that I saw during the entire conference
was the only thing that I actually kind of cared
about. Definitely not anywhere near enough for
me to buy a new console and I know if I were
to buy a new Killer Instinct that I would not
have the time to learn moves like I did when
I was 14 years old playing it. But I do love
the game, the series and what it did for all
the other and Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter
the way that it influenced them. But as long
as they don't make Cinder's eight hit combo any
harder to pull off, I think you'll be just fine,
Joe. That said, I will say, well, this game got
me excited. Again, not enough to spend the money
that they're asking for. It was one of the games
on the list that I was kind of like. Especially
when they revisited it to show you an Xbox live
a new Xbox live feature later in the conference
it was I It was why is this an Xbox one game?
Yep And we should pause for a moment right here
because they're talking about thief. Are you
excited for thief? I Am excited for thief. Okay.
Well, it's there. I'll pause it Me I was one
of the it's one of the first games that I was
kind of like Why is this on the three? Why is
this on the Xbox one and not on the 360? And
and my theory on that just goes kind of what
they usually do when the new systems come out
the day We have these developers working on games
and then all of a sudden Microsoft decides to
drop a development kit in their lap and they
go well why don't we just move that one over
and you know it doesn't get the graphics upgrade
and maybe it gets a couple of the new connect
type features online features and after that
that you're getting a old gen game on a new gen
system and that's bound to happen a couple times
and also i was kind of disappointed in the fact
that they didn't go i remember the killer instinct
game was originally a nintendo fighting game
not owned by nintendo but um It was on the Super
Nintendo, the Game Boy, the N64, and then it
disappeared. And it was big in the arcades, but
one of the things that it was kind of known for
was that pre -rendered look of the characters.
I was actually kind of bummed that they didn't
go with that look again. At least that's not
the way it looked in the stream. In the stream
it kind of looked like just every other generic
fighter now. Yeah, well, I think that's just
going to happen with modern graphics now, because
everything looks as good as those old pre -rendered
things. It would have been so cool to see, like,
to have them actually realize the pre -rendered
look, like the Toy Story -esque style visuals
to the characters. Would you hesitate to say
cell shaded? I'm very has well because the original
killer instinct wasn't cel -shaded no no no it
was I I Wouldn't want to see cells cel -shaded
at all I'm just saying it would have been like
it feels like yeah what we saw was the natural
evolution of what they started on the the Super
Nintendo and the n64 but It I was kind of bummed
that it wasn't like they didn't there wasn't
really like an homage to that in any way I'm
gonna they didn't show off very many characters.
I think they showed Jago I think there was like
a screenshot of Glacius. Glacius was there. They
showed him forming with ice crystals everywhere.
No Fulgor, no Peorkid. So, but again, that was
kind of the one. But again, we all kind of thought
that one was showing up anyways. Because I think
they re -registered the trademark not too long
ago. The next one. On the list is another exclusive
and this one was like a kind of a big one for
me because the developer has been a Sony exclusive
Developer up until their latest game fuse which
which is the developers insomniac games They're
making a game called sunset overdrive. They showed
off a cinematic no gameplay footage. No nothing
my initial reaction was Here's where the art
style for fuse went Because it kind of looks
like a Pixar Team Fortress 2 mashup. I know,
Joe, you said you weren't aware of what Fuse
was or what happened to it. Basically, Fuse was
the original concept trailer for Fuse. It was
called Overstrike. It was a very cartoony looking
game, like Pixar's Incredibles or Team Fortress
2. And it was this co -op based shooter. But
then they decided somewhere in development, they
did a focus test and it was not very well received
or something like that. So the developer Insomniac
Games decided to turn it into generic co -op
shooter. And so it went from being bright and
colorful to, you know, browns and grays and just
being like a generic Gears of War kind of clone.
And it's... I guess. Some people say it's good,
some people say it's bad. I haven't played it.
I don't want to form an opinion. I just know
that's what happened to the art style. I was
kind of disappointed about that because I thought
the art style was one of the unique things about
it. And then they completely did away with it.
And I guess some of the humor that's in the game
doesn't really work because they changed the
art style but not the humor. It's kind of the
reverse of what happened to the Borderlands franchise
where they started out in browns and grays and
then they were like, oh man, we're gonna end
up being just like fallout and Rage so they flipped
it and went with this cartoony art style and
to massive success But it looks like for anyone
that wanted over strike it looks like all of
those resources went to Sunset Overdrive It looked
They showed some kind of free running bit that
was at the beginning of the thing before you
saw it that you were actually shooting things
and it looked a little bit like the free running
from Mirror's Edge and then all of a sudden guns
came out and some type of zombie monster. Yeah
and wacky gun power -ups and everything around
blowing up and it kind of actually looked a little
entertaining. Yeah, the whole thing does look
entertaining. It's just, you know, and it does
look like they have some kind of co -op element
because there were other guys and just your guy.
But kind of it's the one I think is on this list
is the one that shocked me the most because it
was a Sony, a known Sony property or company.
And I wish Sony would have bought them, but they
let them go and do their own thing. Maybe Sony
knew what was going to happen. I don't know.
Uh, cause fuse didn't land on all fours, like
a ranch at ratchet and clank or kind of like
a resistance does. Um, so yeah. Uh, I know you're
excited about the next one. Maybe. Well, yeah.
Forza five. I've, I've always been a Forza guy.
Um, more than Gran Turismo. If you're going to
compete, I didn't have access to Gran Turismo
when I first discovered Forza. What I've always
liked about the series was that it. could be
arcadey if you wanted to but you could also turn
everything down and make it a really good simulator
and eventually you know I'm playing this and
then I get a hold of a Gran Turismo I also like
how Forza is arcadey enough that you actually
can access all of the cars and drive them whenever
you want and don't have to go through silly loops
and jump through and unlock the cars that you
actually want to ride and drive. And then there's
the customizing in the Forza series that I enjoy
quite a bit. But the new features for Forza 5
on the Xbox One, the most shocking or interesting
one is the cloud -sourced AI, where the game
at all times is watching how you race and what
you do and what decisions you make. situations
and is kind of building. What did the guy call
it? A drivatar? Yeah, that goes and sits out
in the cloud. And then when your friends play
or when you play your there's no more on the
disk AI that's racing around you. It's using
other people's driver information to control
the behavior of the cars around you. So when
it I don't know how to even describe it. You
described it as. Yeah, my oversimplification
of the whole process was it's capturing a basically
what was known as a ghost lap from like, you
know, Joe, if you were to race plague, you know,
race a track on a on a racing game and then I
play that same track. I would see like a ghost
image of your car and what you did. I would have
no way of interacting with your car, but I could
at least see where you were on the track. And
if I'm beating you, if I'm doing better or worse,
whatever, I feel like an oversimplification of
the Drivatar or the cloud -based AI in the game
is it's just taking a snapshot of it's making
taking everyone's a ghost image of everyone,
of how someone did on a certain track and it's
now making those, the other AI drivers are ghost
versions of your friends and you can now collide
with them. They are now a physical entity on
the racetrack. I feel like the only computations
that are taking place are if you hit their car
and nudge them off of their predetermined course
around the track. This is where I disagree or
would take issue with it being called a ghost
because the guy implied that when you If it'll
also map your driving style to cars you've never
driven or on tracks that you've never been on
so it's to me it sounds like it's taking more
about the I said oversimplification yeah I know
and I. I agree but yeah it's it is a vast oversimplification
but yeah it's it's the coolest thing about about
the game that I've heard so far and it's the
coolest way coolest. This should be said that
any time Microsoft used the war anyone got up
on stage and said cloud sourced Anything that
means always online. Yep Will there be cars if
I go downstairs and turn off my broadband modem,
right? Well, I'd imagine there would but what
will it be as good? I mean, I'd imagine they
probably just default back to your AI Your standard
AI connection on you know from like four is a
four Yeah, and I wouldn't even be surprised if
they just mapped the code over. Now, the next
one. That's about where I stopped writing down.
So, OK, I've got I mean, we can I didn't want
to go on this long with with the segments, but
so we can kind of rattle off these next ones
because they kind of got less interesting. Microsoft
got up on stage and made a big deal about how
they support any development and all this other
stuff, but they still. do not allow indie developers
to self -publish on their platform. I thought
that was a joke. Yeah, you still have to partner
with Microsoft or a third -party publisher in
order to get on their store. But what they did
get up there is hype Minecraft for the Xbox One.
Which I can already play. And I have to ask,
and I'm being completely... What's the word?
I'm ignorant here, maybe? Is Minecraft still
an indie game? I just I don't know I felt like
the wrong game to get up there and and say We're
still supporting any development The next game
after that was one that they showed off at their
announcement quantum break which I Think this
is the first game that you actually said this
looks next -gen. Yep And I I immediately saw
what? uh what you were referencing um the demo
was kind of neat uh the way that they even the
demo video they showed at their announcement
and this one i think the way that they're playing
with time is kind of neat with like slow motion
and things only being able to slow down for slow
down for so long and it looks like the main character
can touch objects and bring them back into real
time But if he lets go of them, then they default
back to their slowed state I don't know. It's
a it's another game by remedy. I hear they make
great games They started out with the Max Payne
series and moved on to Alan Wake Which Danner's
famous joke is Alan Wake was supposed to be a
launch title and we didn't get it for another
six years I Wonder if that's what'll happen here
and they're really Do you have anything you want
to say about it? Nope. Nope. OK. Really quickly,
I think they did this a couple of times. They
slapped another trailer right on the end of Quantum
Break for a game called D4. No idea. I missed
that. Yeah, they slapped it right on it. There
was no like no guy came back up on stage and
announced it. It was just here it is. It was
like like hanging from it off of the back end
of Quantum Break. You know, I can't even remember
what the demo was about. Wait, no, this was the
one that I said was a connect game. It's the
It looked kind of cell shaded and the guy on
the train the comic bookie looking one Anyways
for me, I don't know Next year for that project
spark Which is an exclusive? It's being published
by Microsoft This looks like their answer and
it looks better than or more fun than and more
user friendly than a little big planet. Basically,
it's a world crafting thing and it kind of evolves
over real time. You you plop down your hero and
you plop down the enemies and you can manipulate
the A .I. of all the characters around you and
you can build up your your home base and anybody
can play your play in your world that you create.
My joke I made is, you know, you can share this
with, you can share your level with whoever you
want as long as they own the game too. Which
is the way everything is, but it was kind of
like, they, the way they talked it up, which
is it made it seem like you'd be able to use
it willy -nilly anywhere, but obviously that's
not the case. It's, it then, so they're, they're
playing this and it looks kind of like fable,
medieval. magic and then they showed a montage
of what these other people had come up with and
instantly I saw sci -fi, geometry wars clone,
space invaders clone, and there were tons of
other things that were kind of going by on all
these many different screens. So it really does
seem like it is kind of open -ended. Yeah, it
really looked a lot. It kind of reeked of a 3D
open world little big planet. Even right down
to their like their trailer presentation because
they did that Yeah, they did that smash cut of
all the little extra games you can build inside
of it. Yeah What I actually thought it kind of
looked like was an HD version of Minecraft Yeah,
well, yeah, I think my mind with that minus the
AI controlling Right. I'm saying like the looks
of it and the way you can craft your world and
stuff like that. And there was like a really
cool thing where you use the Kinect to tell it
what kind of world you want to craft and then
you use your tablet running smart glass to fine
-tune the world that you set up. Which, you know,
cool. That's great. I don't own smart glass and
don't plan on it. Right. Next one. There was
no audio for this one, which was great for the
presentation. got to hear people snickering and
everything in the background crimson dragon i
for some reason this reminded me of panzer dragoon
that's well i think it was made by the same people
okay um again it was just a quick thing no one
got up on stage to talk about it it kind of hung
on to the end of project spark kind of like d4
did to quantum break um the next one This is
where you and I started kind of figure like are
these are these exclusives or they're not exclusives.
And we're also trying to figure out what makes
this. A next gen game the first one was Dead
Rising 3. Which looked like a last gen game until
he went outside and I saw how a big the world
was be how many zombies there were and you had
a massive criticism which I agree with you on
this title. Yeah, it's all brown and grays. Dead
Rising 1 and 1, at least. I'm not entirely sure
about 2. Not 2, 2 happened in Vegas. I'm sure
it was bright and colorful. Yeah, there was a
lot of color in the games, and there was a lot
of humor. You could run around with a LEGO head
on your character, and you made all these preposterous
weapons. It was like a bow staff with a chain
saw on both ends. That stuff was crazy. I think
I'm going to go buy that game today. It was over
the top. This game... It it had the bowstaff
with the chingsaw on the end of it, but being
all in shades of brown and gray it It didn't
look fun Like the humor was sucked out of it
I would be interested in playing it because of
how it seemed to work and how big the world was
and and and that open -world nature of it, but
it's not the same Dead Rising that we had played
before. At least the video that they showed is
not the same one. I mean, there was, and again,
there was some funny stuff like you got in the
car and the zombies hanging onto the car while
it's flying through the air. And there is some
funny stuff. It just doesn't look like a Dead
Rising game. It looks more like a regular old
zombie game. Next up after that was Witcher 3.
Which looked great as expected because the Witcher
series is renowned for the way that it looks
I know my wife is excited for that one because
she enjoys that series The next one I think this
is where Joe kind of started getting into a little
getting into it a little bit regardless of the
franchise, but Battlefield 4 Yeah, that looks
really good. I think that is probably the best
looking game that I've seen during this presentation
because it's taking place inside a collapsing
aircraft carrier. Dynamic light sourcing everywhere,
particle physics everywhere, flying paper, cables.
bullets and artificial intelligence bad guys
everywhere. It was very, very dynamic. The entire
level is moving underneath you and you're being
asked to jump across and move from these falling
apart things. The environment seemed to be fairly
dynamic too, in that there's a point where he
shot the landing gear out from underneath this
airplane that was locked on this elevated diagonal
leaning platform and it skidded down and wiped
out a bunch of bad guys. All of that seemed very
interesting and exciting except that I really
am tired of first -person shooters because I've
already played those and I want something new
now. I'm right there with you and I agree with
everything you said except I want to throw out
the new industry buzzword that is 60 frames per
second. Everything that Joe just mentioned was
running at 60 frames per second, which is usually
not the case with games that look like this.
It's frostbite 3 which EA is moving everything
over to on there like the next Need for Speed
is on frostbite 3 Dragon's age is on frostbite
3 the next Mass Effect game is gonna be on frostbite
3 So it's like this is a tech demo for everything
that EA is gonna be able to do And it looked
great. I and I'm not I'm a fan of battlefield
when I'm playing on a PC I'm not a fan of battlefield
on a console And while I will say, like when
we were watching the video, that Battlefield
4, the Battlefield series, I think will always
trump Call of Duty graphically, but gameplay
wise, Call of Duty will always trump Battlefield.
Now, I've heard they're making tweaks, you know,
to to kind of fix Battlefield 4, make it feel
a little more Call of Duty friendly. But you
know obviously that remains to be seen and there
was a little thing at the end which I missed
because I was so bored with watching a first
-person shooter that I took a potty break There
is an exclusive map pack Coming to 360 first
not an exclusive game, but an exclusive map pack
We're getting it first means you'll all get it
eventually right now What's interesting and now
that's yes another interesting thing too because
battlefield has the battlefield DLC has in the
last generation debuted on the PlayStation 3
first and then went to Xbox Live or then went
to the 360 because Microsoft had the Call of
Duty exclusive content first and then that went
over to PlayStation. So this is kind of another
one of those ones where it's interesting like
what's going to happen tonight at 9 o 'clock
when Sony gets up on stage here, you know, what
are they going to... Show so they're gonna come
out and say 250 and drop the mic and walk home,
man. I would die I would just I Would just if
they just got up there or were like, yep, please
use games share them send them anywhere You want
to go? We'll let we'll let it go 250 I would
just I I would come close to pissing my pants
for real. I mean, I I'm not the I don't like
sony as a company have not liked sony as a company
but boy are they winning me over but more on
that later um the next the next game on the list
is kind of where i was like oh man oh man oh
man um it is a microsoft it's an xbox one exclusive
but again i don't understand why it wouldn't
come to the 360 uh this is another uh and it's
called below it's made by the guys that made
sword and sorcery for the ipad and steam and
just about uh I think it came to Android eventually.
I'm not entirely sure. I really enjoyed what
I played of Sword and Sworcery. The music was
amazing. It's made by a guy named Jim Guthrie.
I hope I didn't say his name wrong, but I love
his music. And this game looked like it had a
co -op element to it. Compared to everything
else they showed, it was a 2D game. Oh, yeah.
Top down. They said roguelike, which I think
it means you only have like one life to live.
Catch that yeah, so it looks and it looked interesting
and it Very not only was it a 2d art style. It
was pixelated like Atari style visuals Basically
updated with more colors and better color gradient
and and all that other stuff But it had this
pitfall Atari esque Type look to it kind of like
sword and sorcery does I like those games, but
I don't pay a lot for those games right And again,
no pricing for any of these games when they were
not announced. I know we were talking about before
the show that with all this online DRM and stuff
like that, that we were hoping that maybe some
publisher will wise up and pass the savings on
to the consumer. Because there's a lot of people
started pointing out that these rules that are
coming down on the next gen consoles are what
PC gamers have had to put up with for, I don't
know, like almost the last decade. Yeah, but
but they get $5 $40 games and we don't mm -hmm
so I mean maybe like like we said optimistically
we hope that they pass the savings on to the
gamer, but Part of me says why would they do
that when they can just make more money off of
a game yep? And development costs are through
the roof because these games take so much to
develop which is stupid The next game we saw
was a game called well actually we don't even
know what the game was called At first I thought
it was a crackdown three, but as Joe reminded
me while we're watching the video supposedly.
It's a new IP And then I made the joke that they
stole the siphon filter franchise from Sony It's
a game. Just it's a game by a company called
black tusk It's a brand new studio Microsoft
opened up in Toronto But uh yeah, no idea what
it is. It looks like a siphon filter splinter
cell s Stealth is a stealthy game Don't wasn't
gameplay that was shown all those a guy hopping
down the side of a building breaking through
glass Loading a gun and the camera went inside
the gun if I yeah and saw what I saw right yeah
And at that point it was kind of like you know
they make the big deal about it. It's an engine
But I'm pretty sure I'm never gonna see the inside
of a gun in your game If I do awesome, maybe
I use connect to move the bullet around I don't
know Now Next game I'm pretty sure Joe and I
heard them say it was going to be a new IP when
they were announcing it and so but I just kept
rattling off things that I thought it could be,
and I was like, Titanfall? No, and you kept saying
no, and then I... Journey 2? Yeah, we said Journey
2, we said Dust 2, we said... I think I even
said Destiny at one point, and you just kept
reminding me, no, it's a brand new IP, and then
no, what happens? This guy takes off his tarp,
you know, lowers his hood while he's walking
through the desert, and no, it's Master Chief
in a game that's simply titled Halo. Don't know
I object to them calling halo halo anymore because
I haven't seen a halo since what halo to like
the ring three I Think they mentioned them in
three and maybe they saw him in a cutscene or
something. Yeah Again, not a whole lot is known
I didn't look like a reboot because the master
chief they showed was kind of busted up But there
was no number associated with their announcement
The last one, and I think probably the most interesting
one that they showed was Titanfall from Respawn.
I don't know. There were things that I liked
more than what that was, but I could see why
people will want to play this and why it will
be cool. Now imagine if you could hook up your...
What is that controller called Joe? Oh the Italian
controller? I Just I don't want a new game for
that. I just want to play Steel Battalion again
on a big -screen television Titanfall looks like
it's from respawn studios Anyone that has been
following along it was formed by two people that
brought us Call of Duty modern warfare and I
Think they got almost done with modern warfare
2 and then they got ousted. It was this whole
big thing A lot of people suing people, countersuing,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, money not being
paid. But they went and formed their own studio
called Respawn Studios. They partnered up with
EA and then it looks like they got back in bed
with Microsoft to create a game that also uses
cloud processing, which also means always on
for like AI and other particle effects. And it
looks like, I remember there was rumors that
Infinity Ward wanted to take Call of Duty into
the future. And Activision, maybe Activision
wasn't too keen on doing that. It looks like
Titanfall is that vision. There's a first person,
I'm a guy on the ground, you know, floating gun
on the screen. And then there's this moment where
you can get inside of a Titan, which is a mech.
Big Mac yeah, and then you can just start wrecking
havoc on everybody and stepping on some people
if I saw that correctly He and there was one
moment where he tackled another wreck and mech
and ripped the guy Pilot out of the inside of
him and so he's wiggling around in the mechs
hand before he chucks him across the map But
that was entertaining um It I've heard from some
places that this game may also be free to play
I've heard this No, this is this is this is speculation
complete speculation. I've heard that Titanfall
may be free to play But it is an Xbox one well,
it's an I'm gonna say Xbox exclusive because
it's also on the 360 but it's also on the PC
So but the 360 version is being made is not being
made by respawn. They farmed it out to another
studio, huh? so So that's a Pretty impressive
list. I think they delivered on what they said
they were going to do, which is we're just going
to talk about games when we show up at E3. That
definitely feels like they got the boring stuff
out of the way at their announcement. They did
not clear up a lot of their Xbox Live stuff.
That's what I'm disappointed that they didn't
cover, but I understand why they didn't. They
didn't do any damage control. And as sore a spot
as Microsoft is in right now, and even though
I think Sony is going to come out and make the
same announcements eventually, they're looking
really good right now because they haven't said
anything. And so with them in such a Sony in
such a position, I think Microsoft had to come
out and justify why they were making all of these
DRM choices, justify it by saying our games are
going to be cheaper, justify it by saying. This
is what's gonna happen in 20 years when the servers
are off They needed to say some of these things
and maybe they're gonna say it later at e3. Maybe
they're gonna say it in a press release not on
camera I don't know but they need to get one
get they need to get all of their people who
are talking heads to be on the same page and
And they need to get a consistent message that
makes me feel better about their system I've
I've also heard that they canceled all one -on
-one interviews with press Well, yeah, because
every one of them kept saying something stupid
and Xbox live Looks interesting they you know
they're taking a lot of things from what Sony
announced at the PlayStation 4 announcement Xbox
live will now include two free plate 360 games
That's kind of cool now the first two of those
being Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo Halo 4 3 3
3 I what was interesting about that to me is
they they made a very strong point of saying
they're yours. Yeah, I thought about that because
I think and you know, because you have it, but
on the PlayStation Plus, if you let that subscription
lapse, they go away, right? All your free games.
Yes, they go. They go away. But if you sign up
for it again, you get access. Yes, you get access
to them again. So just because like like if I
have a game that I got in my instant game collection
when it was part of it. But that game is no longer
part of the instant game collection. When I sign
back up, I still get that game. Even if it's
not available as part of the instant game collection.
But they did make a big deal about that. That's
your game, even if you choose not to pay for
your live subscription. So I'm curious. But what
they didn't talk about. They show some twitch
integration which is a way to stream your games
to the TV to You know through the internet so
people can watch and there was this thing about
You can you can pin it to the side of the TV
and you can see comments while you're playing
the game And they did it with a fighting game
like I don't know if I'm gonna be reading comments
on the side of my screen Well, I think that's
that's for everybody else. I think right and
it will also I don't want to give up that real
estate I saw an interesting webcomic the other
day about multiplayer gaming now where the screen's
divided in half. We could divide the screen in
half and give everybody a decent amount of multiplayer
real estate, but now we don't do in the same
room. Yeah. Multiplayer. I don't know. My television's
big, but. It's not that I would lose the real
estate. It's that I don't care that people can
watch me playing live like that and chat on it
I think I liked the way that the Sony's Their
integration worked and they're connected to friends
and show them videos that looked much more organic
than having like a Twitter feed open up and take
up and One of your screen what they didn't show
you was that can go away Mm -hmm like can you
broadcast without having that open? Like that
that that remains to be seen. But even when they
went to them, when they switched to like the
full screen, like just showing me like a big
game and the setup, there was that was still
a substantial portion of my TV that was gone
to a widget. And I don't want that. Yeah, I'm
sure it's I would never activate that feature,
which is to say that I wouldn't be activating
a lot of the Xbox one's features like that. It
just doesn't seem. I don't know. Everything I
have in my living room can do the things that
they're so excited to be showing me that the
Xbox one can do now The one thing that they didn't
announce was I I still think that there I said
this on Twitter and Facebook I still think there's
going to be a pricing structure change for Xbox
live and I think that's a I think they're gonna
they I don't think they didn't announce it here
because they don't want to bury themselves any
farther than they may have already done Think
I I don't know. I think that the online I think
the annual pass thing is gonna go away And they're
gonna do them. They're gonna do it month to month
and they're gonna charge more for it Like that
would be shady I think it's gonna be ten to fifteen
dollars a month because you're I Don't I don't
know cuz if they're like I understand why PlayStation
Plus yeah, it's $50 and you get the instant game
collection and they give you back your games
I get that like they take their games back if
you stop paying Microsoft has said that you know
you basically under the current setup for Xbox
live you give us $60 a year We're gonna give
you 24 games in one year for 60 bucks, and they're
yours like that doesn't does that like that doesn't
seem right to me does it seem right like Something
about that math doesn't add up Except that they're
those are old games that a lot of their audience
probably already has and how many games are gonna
be the same Right, but I'm just saying like what
that will do that'll get new subscribers who
don't have those games, right? I mean, it's a
way to build an instant. It's their instant game
collection I understand it, but I'm just saying
like that's a lot of stuff to get like technically
right now I could go return my copy of Halo 3
and I can get rid of my copies of Halo 3 and
Assassin's Creed 2 And I don't have to have that
box on my shelf. I can have a digital copy of
it like I like boxes on my shell I understand
that but there's a number of people that don't
I'm just saying like you could slowly convert
and then those games get fed back into the used
game market But like it's I don't see $60 a year
and getting 24 games for free Like that doesn't
especially when they could charge. I think I
think halo 3 still goes for almost full price
on games on demand That's crazy. I'm seeing if
I don't even see it on my shelf. I had that at
some point. But I'm just I just think there will
be a change. I don't think I think they didn't
want to announce it now, especially like also
like 10 people can share your games that you've
purchased. Like. Some of the stuff they've announced
and the way things are happening. That's this
the annual subscription fee isn't going to pay
for itself. I I don't I'm not saying I want them
to do this. I'm just saying I don't see it paying
for itself. I don't see them not announcing a
price change like that to live without also Giving
us a much lower price for the Xbox one Right.
Well, that's true, which they did announce they
slipped it by real quick at the end And then
they buried it under Titanfall 500 bucks I am
not a gamer anymore. I A lot of people the one
thing I have seen online was that they were speculating
that it's 500 because of the connect Which I
don't want the connect yeah me neither so I don't
want to pay for the connect They're gonna make
us pay for the connect because they're gonna
make us need the connect I joked about taking
the Kinect and putting electrical tape over the
camera and then putting the actual Kinect unit
in the closet that I have behind my television
so that I don't have to have that on in the room
listening to me but someone very cleverly put
something together on the internet that says
that showed an icon of just go put tape over
your connect and then a little pop -up warning
window that said the view from the connect has
become obstructed please continue but please
fix this before we can continue gameplay like
dang it you're right that's what they're gonna
do they're gonna make us have it in there but
yeah i wow the budget i've set aside puts me
within spitting distance of it but No, no, there
isn't one thing that they've shown me here that
isn't gonna be on the PlayStation 4 Well, I mean
there's there's a few things but those things
don't aren't blowing up my skirt I just I can't
wait to see what into what Sony comes back with
So yeah, and and did we say it on this podcast
or somewhere else that PlayStation just needs
to come out and say 299 drop the mic and walk
away I think we actually said somewhere in the
middle of the 360 list which is just come out
there You know say we're gonna allow you use
games. We're gonna allow you to share your games
250 You know walk off the stage don't even have
a don't you don't show me any games at that point
Show me the box. I'll be standing up cheering
So anything else you want to Throw on the tail
end of this Well, I'm scared of your subsidized
box plan if that $500 price tag is what it costs
for me to go down there and buy it, but I could
get a You know if I if I subscribe to Xbox live
for three years at 1599 a month I can have the
box for 200 or 300 it doesn't really matter either
because I'm smart enough to look at that and
say But wait, that means I'm still paying this
much for the system. Eventually, it doesn't it
doesn't make it easier emotionally. And yeah,
it might make it easier month to month. But month
to month, I still have a son to feed and rent
to pay not rent house payment to pay and student
loans to pay back. There's no way I could do
that in good conscience. I I totally understand
that. Yeah, I just I'm glad they didn't even
say the word TV. So that's good. They did mention
the Halo TV show, but that doesn't count. Oh,
fail. No. All right. Well. I think that's it
for part one. There are still three other conferences
today. There's the. Ubisoft EA and the PlayStation
for Sony's conference to cap everything off so
for part one As always I've been Michael Powers,
and I was joined by Joe Reed have a good day
And we will come back after the break with whatever
conference. We've just listened to So keep listening
50 years ago, a little old man brought his little
blue box to a junkyard, and now, Doctor Who is
a cultural phenomena worldwide. Join the Geekcast
Radio Network and Markhu42's Hooniverse as we
review Doctor Who episodes past and present,
discuss the Doctor's friends and enemies, see
where the Doctor's been, where he is, and where
he's going. Sit back and grab a Jelly Baby and
join Markhu42's Hooniverse. It's the ride of
this and every other lifetime. Fantastic. Allons
-y! And we're back on the other side of a break.
We are going to do a smash run of the EA press
conference and the Ubisoft press conference.
Again, I'm your host Michael Powers. I'm joined
by Joe Reed. Hello again, and we found Sean Z
Brown Yay, somebody. Yeah, somebody found me
out in a field. They turned my innerwear inside
out said please return to Mike Yeah, well, you
know and you're just here for color commentary
and to ask questions Because you haven't seen
anything yet. I missed the Ubisoft presentation
I was actually kind of impressed with some of
the Ubisoft stuff. So I look forward to Was it
all assassins, watchdogs? No, actually. I miss
watchdogs. A lot of the stuff they showed off,
with the exception of Assassin's Creed 4, had
like a four player co -op elements to it. Including
one game that actually is scratching that smuggler's
run itch that I have. But, let's do this in order,
shall we, like professionals? We're gonna start
off with EA. And just like we were talking about
before we sat down here to push the record button,
they announced plants versus zombies garden warfare.
Which is like a third person tower defense game
where you you play as the plants and the little
troops that march towards your home base are
the zombies. OK, so can I move around? Yes. OK,
it's like third person shooter. Like years of
war with and so the only connection to actual
plants versus zombies is the fact that you're
playing as plants And there are zombies yes,
but there's it's not like that same top -down.
I put guys can I still place guys Yes, you can
place turrets you so you're so you're just like
a super plant you can place all the normal ones
Yeah, you play as the normal ones, and it looks
like you have the ability to plop down baby versions
of yourself Or either baby or call in like the
chili peppers And like roast a bunch of guys
the cherry bombs yeah, oh the chili Pepe's I've
never gotten far enough to get chili peppers
in their game. Oh wow I I just started playing
it like Two months ago. Oh, okay the very first
time, but no it's um it looked interesting It
is like coke at the coconut or the walnut blow
bowling It that's that gonna return Wow that'd
be weird That would be awesome. Take that, Wii
bowling. They announced it for Xbox 360 and Xbox
One. I'm very happy that it's getting an Xbox
360 release. Yeah, because I don't think that's
something that I'm going to be like, oh my god,
I need to have amazing graphics to play. Now,
we talked about Titanfall in the last segment.
And I don't think they showed much more about
it. No, it was just actually it was just like
a developer reel. People talking about the game
that they made and how they wanted to do something
fresh. So they made another third person shooter
with a leveling mechanic. Yeah, they mentioned
how that EA usually rehashes. I mean, later some
of the commentary I read that they rehash all
these old titles and how they are so proud of
of. Titanfall and it's yeah, you know it really
just looks like another third -person shooter
to me so Titanfall is whose game it's it's it's
response game That's okay. That's odd that it's
third -person though. It's not it's the it's
oh yeah They showed this they showed this demo
reel, and it was all third -person stuff And
then they showed gameplay, and it was all first
-person stuff. Oh For a while it looked like
the first person that when you're Running around
as the pilot with the gun that it's first person,
but then the mech stuff was 3d But that's totally
no everything looks like it's first person Uh,
and you seamlessly transition from guy on the
ground to mech pilot by walking up to a mech
In fact, like you call in your mech like a perk
would be in modern warfare So is this good? This
is gonna be like mech assault Not they're not
that big Or okay, so they're more like power
armor. It's more like so some mech warrior lone
wolf Sure. And like I told Joe in the last segment,
it looks like the game that Infinity Ward, that
these guys wanted Infinity Ward to make and Activision
was like, no, you need to make more Call of Duty.
And so, you know, they're like, no, we really
want to do something new. Yeah. So now they win.
Now they're just doing like this future combat.
Does it look good? Yes. as the only the only
bad part about it is from what we can tell is
that it's an always online game because they're
offloading AI and particle physics to the cloud
so no cloud no well see that's what we're that's
what we're like wondering about is if you do
like let's say you make your 24 -hour internet
check but then you disconnect yourself from the
internet how does the game play Yeah, I'm very
nervous about how they're going to handle that.
That kind of freaks me out because I really hope
that a lot of developers don't go, oh, if we
use the cloud for all this is freeze up all this
space to do this awesome shit. But then like,
oh, my Internet connection is down. I guess I'm
not playing that. I think Microsoft is using
their cloud solution to make up for their disadvantage
with the PlayStation 4. Yeah, which with the
RAM. Yeah, I mean which and they're also the
some of the like the hardware I've been reading
numbers. It's not it's the PlayStation has 50
% more raw power Than the Xbox one. Well, yeah
plus a lot of the Xbox is there is Save for connect
stuff and not everything's gonna be connect.
I think the even though it's a unified pool of
memory I believe it's like three three for the
operating system and all that stuff and five
for games Yeah. And I think that the PlayStation
4 is like 2 in 6, or maybe it might only be 1
in 7. But yeah, I think they're using that cloud
computing and kind of forcing that always -on
connection to make up for what they didn't put
in the box. Which I don't know if you've heard,
Shaunzy, can we get your reaction to the $500
price tag? If if it's $500 Changes hey am I gonna
get a new Xbox one or hey am I gonna trade in
my 360 to put towards it? Which with no backwards
compatibility is kind of like what the fuck yeah,
I don't trade hardware Well you collect I Yeah
But yeah, okay, so the next thing they showed
off Oh, I got an email though that was like hey
if you buy the Xbox one in the release window
you get a special controller Yeah, whatever What's
your release window six months like I don't know
it's But it might have been like if you if you
pre -order it or whatever you get like hey you
get this controller What's different about it?
Let's go to sticker Yeah Then they showed off
a little snippet video that I actually missed
because I blinked It was an AT -AT stomping on
something and It was apparently it was battlefront
Joe you saw more of this trailer. Yeah, I went
online It was basically just a foot crunching
in the snow. Yeah, it's it's like first person
of I'm assuming you're some kind of soldier and
you're on what looks like Hoth or some snow area
and all you can hear him breathing and he's like
walking and you hear the you know the Star Wars
sound for laser shots Kind of things Craziness
and then it's like you just see the ATAT foot
stomp right in front of them And that's like
fades out and I guess they're just instead of
having a number game just going right back to
Battlefront Well, it seems to be EA's thing about
a lot of things right now. That's everybody's
thing about a lot of things right now halo but
The next thing after that. Halo actually didn't
do that. I know you're excited for Battlefront.
I don't know that I am yet. I've never played
one. So, oh, God, they're fun. It's. I found
myself dying too quick when I played that. It
depends. It depends. You definitely that's it's
it's it's like basically a class based game when
you're playing. It's very important where you're
spawning because. I don't care how good you are
one guy is not taking on three guys and a head
-to -head it's not happening, but the awesome
parts were Say my guy I've gotten enough points
by capturing stuff and Helping our team get kills
and taking areas. Whatever. I've now got enough
points I'm gonna unlock a hero character for
a very specific amount of time So it's like hey,
but here's Boba fat go nuts And now we're assuming
this battlefront is gonna play that yeah, and
not battlefield with a skin on it yeah, but the
in the old games were cool cuz um When you got
those hero characters You were pretty much invincible.
Oh See I still managed to die No, I mean you
needed to really Joe suck I Believe I did suck
like like if you were if you came back as a Jedi
your health bar became a lightsaber It is as
long as you were killing people You can keep
going no apparently Joe wasn't killing people
so Then after that human soundboard they they
showed off a game that I'm excited for it is
need for speed arrivals It's not It's supposed
to be like most wanted or um Yeah, most wanted
like the older one. Well. It's no it's a it's
being produced by criteria criterion who did
most wanted and hot pursuit the two Which most
wanted though the most recent one, okay? They
did two of the last three and EA gave them the
rights to it and then they farmed them out They
farmed this version out to another company whose
name I cannot remember right now But it looks
like it is a mashup of most wanted and hot pursuit
like slammed together into one game which with
The video they showed off and the gameplay they
showed off Has me really excited for this I didn't
really care that much for most wanted, but I
think that's because it was Pushing the hardware
to its to his limits, and you know this wasn't
that fun me to play I famously threw a controller
across the room Yeah, remember those tweets Those
were fun times I did that on it was funny cuz
like a day later into the exact same thing playing
assassins Why do I keep getting stuck in this
box? Boom, all in the wall. Yeah. Well, yours
wasn't rubber banding AI that came up and like
T bones you like out of the road. No, mine. Mine
was what's his face dry humping a box instead
of mantling it. But no, I'm excited for that.
And it looked pretty good. I want to be excited
for those kind of games. Racing games just don't
have any staying power with me anymore. I can
see that but there's I play I'm like, oh, this
is great. And then like a week later. I'm like,
I really don't care There's a racing game that
Ubisoft announced that we could talk about That
actually sounds kind of fun. Even even Danner
said it seemed like it could be kind of Dan or
really doesn't like racing games After Need for
Speed rivals, they showed off Dragon Age 3 Inquisition
or is it just Dragon Age Inquisition Dragon Age
Inquisition. Yeah, okay Well, that's what I saw.
I haven't seen the the stuff for yet, but that's
what I saw for the name Have Nothing against
the series, but I have no love for the series
do they they show is it just a trailer? It's
a open world no no gameplay that I remember open
world RPG Yeah, that's what the last well as
what the first one was second was very more linear
How's it compared to? Elder Scrolls um oh they're
very different games um Dragon Age is all third
person Um, it's kind of like if they took, how
can I say this? You're not just swinging your
sword all the time. You have powers, but not
like moves kind of. Um, think somewhere between
Elder Scrolls and kind of, kind of like a, like
a, uh, Oh wow or something where it's like you
have different skills and passive abilities to
overlap with other characters This healer goes
here this you know this this this and this it's
all working together Half the game is making
sure you have good people in your squad doesn't
matter how good you are if you don't have them
You know a healer you're screwed Stuff like that,
but it's um it was a fun Game not it wasn't a
hack and slash really Like you tell your guy
to attack him not X would be like oh attack him
not swing your sword that would lock on him and
he would just Automatically start hitting them
and you control the powers What the fuck was
that that was my phone sorry guys wait what way
to be professional? Yeah, my bad turn my phone
on vibrate Don't worry man. I was at work the
other day and my phone went off very love my
phone Ringer is r2d2 going very loud Yeah, and
yeah it and it was like it basically sound like
my crotch was bionic Which was awesome kind of
anyways So yeah, it's it's it's a fun game. I
would really like to see a third one and hopefully
it's good The second was okay. I like the second
one, but it a lot of people did not This is about
when I fell asleep. Yeah, this is about I apologize
for anyone that actually listens to this podcast
That's a sports fan. I haven't cared about a
sports game since like NHL 14 maybe Not in a
job. Sorry not in a job 14 NHL Oh seven ha ha
Wow, okay, so really last time I cared about
a technically a sports game was Tecmo Super Bowl
No WCW vs. NWO. Yep But they went off to show
off their Ignite engine. Because EA has streamlined
their production down to two engines instead
of a whole bunch. They now have Frostbite 3,
which is amazing from everything I've seen. And
they have an Ignite engine, which is probably
just a sportified version of Frostbite. They
announced NBA Live 14, which this will be the
first NBA Live game in like three years? I think
they announced Madden 25, which is also Madden
2014 UFC 14 and FIFA 14 like This sports games.
It's kind of like hey We're gonna put one out
every year or we just fucking have a patch that
updates the rosters unless you're adding actual
new mechanics I will say this this is the one
thing I I thought was interesting and I don't
Joe I don't know if you actually fell asleep
or I Did they did they say that for the first
time ever? Player stats will be updated updated
like daily within the hour they said okay Yeah,
that's I that's what I thought so the game will
naturally evolve over 365 days of release and
then you know when the new one comes out It'll
get shut off unless they're kind of developing
these as games as a platform Which I would kind
of like to see happen Make more sense, but you
know maybe EA is not there yet. Maybe we're still
a couple years away from that who knows But it
would be nice to see I think I would be more
likely to Maybe try a sports game again. Maybe
the next NHL game if it was a game as Platform
like I just I download a patch. You know I paid
$10 for a patch every year and Instead of $60
for a new game. Yeah, I Don't think they'd ever
do that. There's too much money Right, but you
know we always talked about we talked last segment
about being optimistic. You know passing that
Digital sale savings. I wasn't there. I don't
have to be optimistic You're right you don't
um I will say the NHL games are I've played a
little bit of them really But they're usually
pretty fun as any game any sports game. That's
not a fighting game. They're allowed to get in
fights That's why it wins And then I think this
is where I kind of stopped taking notes because
I was getting really excited for what was coming
up They showed off battlefield for again And
my god, that was amazing. I think Battlefield
4 may be the best looking thing I've seen. And
were they showing off single player stuff? There
is no single player. I think they showed off
single player in the Xbox One conference. Yeah,
but I'm saying is that what were they showing
that was pretty? Because I heard that about the
single player is that it's so realistic. The
multiplayer looks realistic too, like it looks
ridiculous. They showed off a 64 player multiplayer.
On which system? What were they playing on? They
didn't say. Because Battlefield 3 had 64 players,
but only on PC. But I've heard that the console
versions, the next gen console versions are supposed
to do 64 player. From what I've heard from sites
and stuff, Physically speaking, they should be
able to handle it just fine. Who knows if they're
gonna? Well, because the PS3 could do it. On
certain games. Well, yeah, but look how MAG looked.
And plus MAG wasn't... Weren't you kind of segmented
in MAG? Well, no, there was a huge pool of players
that could be in the same... War at the same
time, but still each each individual skirt like
screen could hold a ton of people, right? But
could I walk over and engage in like another
group of eight players in that game? Because
wasn't like segmented into eight group of eight
No, your squad was only eight, but there was
there was multiple squads, okay? I could be like
him like walk over to another teammate. He's
none of my squad. I can't mess with him I can't
do anything with him, but he's right there I
could go kill the enemy that he's fighting. Well,
regardless of what platform it was, it looked
amazing. And they coined a new for a new word
called Levolution. What the fuck is Levolution?
It's how it's because their maps can change dynamically
through gameplay. And I wonder if that means
destruction is going to be like. High skill distractions
can be back. You have no idea. It fucking better
be. No, it is, it is. They put one of those,
I think the mode they were playing was that one
where it's like capture this point, okay, now
move forward and capture this point. Ross, yeah,
it's like basically like you're pushing them,
one side is pushing the other side back. Right,
yeah, so basically one of these points happen
to be at the top of a skyscraper. So you got
all the way to the top and people obviously people
were taking helicopters up there to try and knock
you out of the building that way and once they
got up there the building started shaking and
they looked over to the side and The enemy team
was hitting the building with tanks to try and
knock it down And so they had to capture the
point before the building fell and what I don't
know is that if it's if this is like a If it's
a canned event that happens in the level, because
like I said, they put a checkpoint on the top
of the building. So if the enemy brings down
the building, does the checkpoint move? They
didn't, you know, that hasn't really addressed
because what happens is they capture the checkpoint
and then the building falls over and they have
to jump out of the building and activate their
parachutes and they land on the ground and they
turn around and the entire building comes toppling
down. Well in in the third one, I hope it's not
a can of eggs I'd be shitty because even in battlefield
3 there's a cop There's a certain map where when
it gets to a certain point in the game a huge
one radio tower falls down like right across
the map it basically cuts it in half and It makes
it so tanks from one side have to go through
very specific channels It's just it's interesting
because like I said they put that checkpoint
at the top of the building so it's like even
in in bad company to um They'd have those points.
There's two ways you can either cap them or if
you do crazy amounts of damage to them You can
destroy them in that in that um rush mode. Oh,
okay And there would be one there would be times
even in battlefield back company to where it
was on the second floor of a building and Peep
tanks would just sit way back and shoot the building
out and when it would collapse he it would auto
kill it Yep, that's what but that was all that
was only like a two -story building though. Okay
Well, this was that they were doing that exact
same thing with a skyscraper Which is cool. That's
what a lot of people were like what the fuck
like on with battlefield 3 that they didn't like
Or I was like, oh, there's a building here. Oh,
I can blow a hole in the wall, but I can't bring
the building down Like the four posts the four
corner posts of it were immortal Which I hated
they also showed off Like there was a guy like
brought in a tank and they all ran back into
the subway station And they shot one of the pillars
that was holding the subway station ceiling up
and it brought the tank down into the subway.
That's cool like I Hate military shooters. I
don't care about them. This has me kind of excited
this level of destructive environments and cover
and That I mean, it's gonna make me have to think
in a whole new way about We're solving problems
in a completely destructible environment. Yeah,
it's it becomes some interesting things like
oh I have to defend this point. I'm gonna watch
this door Well guy on the outside blows a hole
for the sidewall where you're not paying attention
and comes through Mm -hmm, or or like you said
there used to be times where you'd be behind
a wall get ready And instead a guy was to drive
a car through the wall With strap with c4 blow
it up inside of the building See a lot of this
kill all those people a lot of this stuff is
possible simply because of the amount of ram
yeah added to the systems Well, they kind of
when they did three they kind of um they're like
oh, we're gonna make The physics better and bull
drop and everything's gonna look prettier But
they had to take away from the destruction do
it which shitty so this seems like it's a combination
of the two It's like we'll give you the prettiness
of this, but the ass kickery of this one And
then Joe's is there one more before my Nope thing
so far. Yeah, so then they just got up on stage,
and they announced that they're I'm gonna add
a little bit to this because I read another article
on this in between the EA and the Ubisoft press
conference Dice is rebooting mirrors edge mirrors
edge. I've never heard of this game. What is
that ah? You're so funny. I'm hysterical It's
arguably like, it's the only game, I was telling
Joe about this, it's the only game that made
me feel accomplished for being a gamer this last
generation. Like, I felt like my skill as a gamer
was tested in this game and I don't think any
other game has done that because a lot of the
stuff, a lot of what became really big in this
generation was the contextual buttons. Like one
button to rule them all depending on where you
are in the environment. outside of like maybe
a racing game, I don't think anything's really
tested me in the way that Mirror's Edge has.
But as a free running first person, it's, you
know, the world, it guides you through the world
using red and white as your guides. Like you
can, anything that's red, you can probably grab
on to or jump off of or like wall run on. And
it's about like, it's about that, you know, parkour
and the economy of motion. And I really enjoyed
it and they've people have been clamoring for
a sequel for forever And it came out at a time
when EA was doing all these new IPs there was
like mirrors edge and there was dead space and
Dead space was the more successful of the two
so EA obviously that's where the money went EA
ran dead space right into the ground Into the
ground, but I've heard nothing but good things
really But people have been clamoring for Mirror's
Edge 2, Mirror's Edge 2, and DICE has been saying,
well, we don't have the money for it, we don't
have the resources, blah, blah, blah. Well, now
we're getting it. Only it's like a reboot. All
of our developers are busy counting battlefield
money. Look! They did say that the release date
that says it'll be released when it's ready,
which that means it'll be released when EA says
it needs to be released. When it's like it's
like okay. I hope they don't put it up. I don't
No matter when it gets done. I hope it's released
at a smart time Yes, not like hey, let's put
against all these other things because there's
there's that's something of its own. There's
no other first -person Parkour games except for
what the fuck was that game dying light no no
no no this is a really shitty Body count don't
remember It was horrible I can't I camera what
the hell was the name of it? It was like a shitty
shitty version If team fortress 2 and mirrors
edge had a baby and that baby hit down syndrome
like It was horrible. It's like you could the
big thing is you had a gun You know you were
attacking pathetics, but you could do that you
could run and jump off walls and that bright
colorful game we saw during the Xbox conference.
What was that Mike? Oh, oh my God. The Insomniac
game. It's Sunset Overdrive. Yeah, I don't know
what this was, but this thing was horrible. Well,
but other than that, I'm saying is that Mirrors
Edge has something its own like there's there's
no other games that I would really say like,
no, it's got like Mirrors Edge. I feel like it's
a spring. Summer release not a fall winter release.
Yeah, I don't this is not. This is not a gearing
up for the holidays game When all the other big
names are gonna be coming out so that made me
really happy. I think that's the I Think that's
the happiest I've been so far with everything
that's been announced was mirrors edge thought
you're gonna say the happiest you've ever been
I'm like you just got married, dude Yeah, well,
you know things Um, so EA had a pretty strong
showing. I mean, it was an EA conference. Uh,
you know, they didn't actually talk about how
they're gonna rip off the consumers or anything
like that, so. Well, they'd like to keep that.
Well, except that Battlefield 4 already has DLC
coming out. See, I... They did that for Battlefield
3. But this time, but this time, it's a timed
exclusive with the Xbox One. Which makes me wonder
what Sony's gonna get up there and announce at
their conference. Um that's weird that they're
doing a timed exclusive book to the Xbox. I know
this battlefield has always been a PlayStation
I Already have battlefield for pre -ordered and
I already have the code to download the first
DLC The first DLC map you get a free get it free
when you pre -order it So they did the exact
same thing with three though That was it for
EA Now we can talk about Ubisoft Now this should
be interesting considering. I'm the only one
that saw this here For reasons good reason we're
gonna target whatever feelings we have at you,
okay, so it The first thing they showed off was
a game called Rocksmith 2014 Okay, so it's supposed
to be another Rocksmith game Yes, and I'm not
familiar with the Rocksmith games Rocksmith is
you could literally take an electric guitar and
plug it in and play Okay, whereas rock band and
guitar hero you played a controller that shit
was shaped like a guitar You could put on a mode
in Rocksmith that would actually tutor you and
teach you how to play an actual electric guitar
Okay, rock band 3 had that Well, it did but rock
band 3 you're still playing a fake not if you
you know There was a guitar that they made that
you could either use as a real guitar or as a
game controller With Rocksmith, I can only take,
oh, I already have this little head of guitar,
and you just point the adapt. I know what you're
saying. But for me, it was kind of like, it was
weird that they're doing it now. I was kind of
like, wait, so Rock Band and Guitar Hero got
out of the way, and you're just going to come
in here and clean this up. So they didn't really
do any favors for me. I'm kind of not into those
games. But I mean, I'm sure it'll be good. The
next thing they showed off. And I might have
some of these out of order and I apologize for
people Is something called the mighty quest for
epic loot? It is a free -to -play game that has
an open beta right now. It's a Windows game Gonna
say it sounds like a Borderlands edition They
didn't they didn't show off the one thing about
the Ubisoft conference is there wasn't a lot
of gameplay for some of these things a lot of
it was just Trailer footage and this one was
like a mock interview with like one of the heroes
in the game And you know kind of made me chuckle
here and there but at the same time I was like
I don't really know what I'm watching Hey, did
you um before forget? Did you see the I heard
something about Dead Rising 3? Yes, we talked
about that in the okay. That was the first thing
we were kind of disappointed because it's not
colorful It they took it like a more serious
vibe with it. I heard an interview with the director
about that. He says that They thought that putting
the humor up front in their old games kind of
destroyed the the tension of it And they said
that the humor is still in the game, but you
kind of have to go do it. You've got to find
it And so that's why your point of that game.
That's what I kind of thought but that's that's
what they're Thought was behind it that you can
grab a gun and play it or you can go strap Chainsaws
to the front end of a motorcycle and drive around
isn't that kind of like George Lucas retconning
the Star Wars movies to be about Darth Vader
When they were always about Like Luke and laugh.
Yeah, like he was like he's like all six movies
were the story of Darth Vader It's like really
cuz I didn't get any of that in episodes four
or five and six. I got that was about Luke I
Didn't get about that was about the fall of a
guy and then the redemption of them I mean, I
get how you turned it into that, but that's not...
I don't know, it just seems like we wanted it
to be serious from the beginning, and now we
can. No, I'm sorry. With this not to be going
a huge change, with the newest three Star Wars
movies that came out, those were all like, hey,
what character do you really want? What is it
you really want? We're going to show you what
happens right up before that and not including
what you want. Right. But the mighty quest for
epic loot it looks like you have a tower and
you get to outfit it with different Traps and
things like that and other players come and try
and loot your tower And you can go and loot theirs
and if you're successful or whatever you get
points or credits or something and you can use
it to upgrade your tower with like better security
and stuff like that so but like I said there
wasn't a whole lot of gameplay so I can't really
talk about what it actually was so like if I'm
playing with you I literally am trying to rob
your shit. Yes. And I'm trying to defend my tower
from you. You would so suck at it. Probably.
I would rob you blind. The other game they announced,
and this is the one that's kind of scratching
my smugglers run itch, is a game called The Crew.
It is a four player co -op. cooperative racing
game and it looks like they're taking like an
anthropomorphized view of the United States.
Like you can. You it's an open world racer and
you can drive across the United States, but it's
like a smaller, more condensed version of the
United States. So it's so kind of like how. Los
Angeles was in San Andreas, it's kind of compacted.
Yes, or you can drive across the desert in a
minute. Yes, like that. And it looks like, you
know, you can you know, you can go about your
own thing. The only problem is you're never playing
by yourself. There's always like other like if
your friends are playing, they're always in your
game with you. There's like a persistent world,
but like I can be in one spot doing my thing
with my races and you can be doing your thing
in your place with your races. But every once
in a while it gives you a mission. Like you need
to take this guy down so you can go to your hideout
in the city and I can like send a message to
you saying, hey, I need some help. And you drive
over or you can probably teleport to me. I don't
know. And we outfit our cars to do this task.
And then like the four of us can go roll out
and try and take down like this armored truck.
Now I'll fit them with like what we upgrade them
like they they show this like ridiculous thing.
I put machine guns on it I don't combat that
way like they showed you they showed someone
taking like a Camaro from like a Low slung street
car to like this off -roading 4x4 which looked
completely ridiculous But like the four of us
get together and we take down this car but at
any point in time the game can break out into
this four versus four vehicular combat game where
another crew will just spawn into your game and
You know, it's like See who can take down the
other team the fastest Now this sounds interesting
to me, but it might be because I just watched
fast and furious I'm not sure It's kind of like
cowboy games always sound awesome after I finished
watching tombstone Yeah, I'm like oh my god.
That's the best thing ever and then a day later.
I'm like But it's it's scratch that smugglers
run itch for me It looks like it can anyways
it looked all right it I I was you know it's
kind of texting back and forth with with the
inner while this was happening And you know I
said I said it I was expecting the game to look
a little better They showed actual gameplay which
I think was great But they showed this like really
cool trailer first, and then they showed the
gameplay and I texted Dan and I said it doesn't
look that great And he says we'll remember the
whole internet versus you know an act actually
playing it on your computer And I said yeah,
but need for speed rivals liked a lot better
than this did So but then it kind of then they
got like the city they got like the forest And
there's actual stuff around and it got it actually
looked pretty good Another game they announced
actually it was more just we're going to announce
a release date for it was the South Park RPG
the stick of truth Which is coming this holiday
What it's a South Park game, it's like a 2d oh
that's Yeah, I know, but I completely forgot
that game was even still around it's been a limo
so for so damn long It was a THQ game, and it
was just about to be released, and then obviously
THQ went. They actually started taking, like,
pre -orders. They were actually putting out promotional
stuff for it already, and then it went away.
Well, because THQ went under. Yeah. Another game
they announced, and the only time I've seen a
Wii U controller at this E3 so far, they announced
Just Dance 2014. Woo! So what wait why would
I want to use a Wii U controller for just dance
so you can change the song on the fly? Here dance
while you do that hold on to this plastic brick
for me Yeah, exactly you give like you give the
Wii U controller to someone else sitting there
while you're dancing your ass off And they get
to change the song up on you, okay? You're not
holding it one you did, but if you're playing
if you're doing it by yourself Which because
you'd be a loser but um You have to hold the
toy while you dance or you can put on the table
in front of you Okay, I really want to see like
head injuries because somebody does YMCA just
lots of gonic dome They showed off two new trials
games Trials fusion which is coming to everything
so finally Xbox won't have a monopoly on that
Then there's good because it's such a good game,
and then there's trials frontier which is coming
to your cell phone And supposedly there's some
kind of cross -platform thing between them It
might it might be like I'm assuming if it's anything.
It's it'll be like just like a leaderboard probably
They showed off watchdogs That anything in more
any any new information or they just like showing
it off What I saw was a trailer. They got leaked
last night Which is using in -game assets like
every other frickin video is this time But it
looks I'm so excited to play that game it that
I can see me putting a lot hours into that game
and the mold like the The mobile thing that's
gonna come out with it Yeah, they didn't they
didn't really see they got up there, and they
were like here's a trailer, and it was really
cool to watch But then they didn't have any gameplay
like I obviously what they showed was in game
But it's I've seen a little bit of gameplay stuff
though. I've seen I've seen gameplay stuff It's
just I'm just saying they didn't show any some
of the crazy I'm I want to see how far the game
goes because the one thing I saw in involved
The backstory of a girl being raped well yeah,
they're fucking dark in some places well the
the trailer that I saw involved him infiltrating
this underground like human trafficking ring
and He goes in there, and he starts attacking
the guys in there And they start shooting at
him and he uses a cell phone to activate the
sprinkler system And then he proceeds to beat
the rest of them up with his baton and and you
know with a pistol And then on say it like fighting
stick baton sounds so fruity whatever. He proceeds
to take him out with that and then he drags the
other guy like outside or something. I can't
really remember. And when he gets out there,
the police are out there and they're like freeze
and he like puts his hands in the air, but he's
still got a cell phone and there's like a little
power icon on it and he hits it and the lights
go out and he dispatches all the cops around
him. And then he walks down the street and turns
the power back on they end up arresting like
the the trafficking guy and While he's standing
there. He puts the guy's face up on like this
bill like this New York Times billboard and You
know saying like this guy's a human trafficker
Yeah, he kept showing pictures of like different
girls And it kept saying sold sold sold and you
know he was basically burying the guy in the
public and in like the public Interest yeah,
it was cool Probably the most interesting thing
I've seen Gameplay wise I saw something and he
would he did it was He'd use his little statistic
thing that he hooks into where it's like you
okay. This guy has what whatever percentage of
committing, you know assault and This is like
one of his victims and they got close so that
I'm saying, you know He attacked so this random
dude attacked his random check And he goes to
stop him but a bunch of people saw him do it.
He didn't have his little mask up So it cuts
to like half an hour later like real world half
an hour later you've moved on we're doing a bunch
of stuff and he's in Like a store selling stuff
and buying Ammo or something. I forget what he
was buying But across the back is the news is
playing and it's talking about that assault from
earlier Yeah And then it flashes your guys picture
so as you're talking as the shopkeepers talking
to you he slowly turns sees what it sees the
the you know the picture view plaster across
screen then turns and then he pulls a gun on
you because you're you know a wanted that shows
you're a wanted man which i thought was so cool
um side note real quick uh apparently according
to amazon video games they've already sold through
half of their pre -order allotment of xbox ones
What did they say how many that is no they never
are they just they just said half of it Yeah,
they say it says what a day unbelievable demand
for the Xbox one in the first six hours of pre
-order availability We've sold through actually
said most or inventory. Sorry Yeah, and you're
still gonna be able to buy one walk in on the
first day I firmly believe with that price. You'll
be able to find one on launch day To be honest,
I don't think price is gonna have a huge Thing
about it is that I think they've learned from
what happened No, I think when the three when
the Wii U got announced and it was 350 and people
were like that's expensive I think the exact
same thing is going to happen to the Xbox one
Well, yeah, but I mean they've I know but I'm
saying is that Regardless of price with the Xbox
and the PlayStation 3 Lot of times people couldn't
find the version of it. They wanted even though
the Wii U is a amazing example That was sold
out for like ever for a while and I think these
guys realize that If your products not there
they can't buy it and they'll buy something else
So Xbox doesn't want to short it when they know
PlayStation is gonna be there and PlayStation
is one sure when they know Xbox is gonna be there
Oh, I understand what you're saying, but I do
think price is gonna pay a factor. Oh, it's I
mean, it's not gonna matter, but I don't Think
the people are gonna find a way to buy it no
matter what well Yeah, I know about how expensive
it is, but there's a difference between finding
a way and being able to go and buy one Like all
I'm saying is I got body parts. I ain't using
That's sad What um how often do you use your
pinky toe and there are people that could use
your pinky toe you bastard anyways Another small
little game that they showed off was Assassin's
Creed 4. Is this the pirate one? Yes. Yes. They
they showed off... Are they calling it Assassin's
Creed 4 or are they just calling it Assassin's
Creed Black Flag? It's Assassin's Creed 4 Black
Flag. Okay. It showed, they showed a new trailer,
you know, cutscene thing that looked, you know,
really cool as they all do and then they showed
some in -game footage which I saw a couple weeks
ago. On a on a YouTube feed, but it it looks
good. I Mean, it looks like next -gen Assassin's
Creed. I'm sold on that game. So quick. I Pre
-ordered it on Xbox and then I'm just gonna switch
my pre -order, but I want to prove just so I
get the map It looks I mean I want I want to
play because it looks like something I'll like
to play Well, they're taking my favorite part
of three the naval combat My god You have no
I literally the first after the first time of
playing through it. I'm like, ah, I'm gonna go
watch Master and commander Like and then I'm
gonna do that same mission again It's the only
time and any Assassin's Creed mesh any Assassin's
Creed game that I've gone back to missions and
played them over and over For the experience
of it. I've done it before like I want to get
to 100 % not But I went back and played naval
missions that I got 100%. I couldn't do any better.
I just wanted to do them again. I've never done
that in Assassin's game. Um, I guess, I guess
because the lead up to it has been so long was
kind of like, yeah, I'm going to play it. So,
Oh yeah. As soon as they say, like I said this
way back when, when we did, when we were talking
about Assassin's story, when it came out on this
podcast, I'm like, Oh God, they just need After
the naval cutoff. I just I just want an assassin's
game. I just want a pirate game now They announced
it the day. They announced it. I'm like yeah,
that's I'm that money's spent now They can't
take my money on that game fast enough um The
next game and we'll wrap this up after this one
because the Sony conference is gonna start They
showed off a new Tom Clancy game, and it is called
the division it borrows a little bit from the
crew, which we talked about earlier. It's a four
player co -op game, third person shooter. The
premise of the game is that there's this thing
called like a black winner contingency. And the
idea is that on Black Friday, a group of people
taint cash with a very bad strain of the flu
virus. and they dump it into the economy on Black
Friday. So the virus spreads very quickly. Crazy
quick. Yes, and people end up dying. And the
whole thing is that there's a division. Like,
the government has cells set up around the globe.
Around the US to so like when things go shit
these cells get activated and they help maintain
order in in these you know in these turbulent
times and you play as one, you know a group in
the division that gets activated after this thing
goes on and It looks like there's some tablet
integration. So Hypothetically, let's say I'm
at work and you guys are playing like on a Tuesday
night or whatever Not that that would be the
case. I can play from my tablet But I won't be
my guy in the game. I will be like a little AR
drone That can see the level from above and point
AR drone. Yeah, like the have you seen those
like quadricopters? Yeah, yeah, they were in
Call of Duty, but I would play as one of those
What does AR mean? It's just I don't know they
call the there's an iOS version that you pilot
with your phone And it's called an AR parrot
drone or something like that. It's just a quadricopter
Okay, but it's like I was fine. It's basically
just an unmanned aerial. Yes Yeah, and so I would
be able to be like oh, there's a guy there And
I can highlight the guy and then you like the
three other three people I'm playing with could
go and take that guy out on the ground And each
person has like like special abilities like they
there's like a healer Apparently can give like
he's like a medic. Yeah, but they can activate
it like a special ability That's like I don't
think there's like I don't think you're like
superheroes or anything like that One of the
perks that you can unlock is the ability to heal
your team over time kind of like the auto regen
and Borderlands Yeah, so it's your continuously
give them a little bit of health. Yes And but
you're working your way through the city and
the whole thing is broken down and you know,
you can you hear gunshots in the distance and
you can pull up a little mini map and you don't
ever leave the game like this little risk computer
comes up and like a holographic image spills
out onto the ground of the map of the city and
you can see where events are and you can plot
to go there and check them out with your team.
It's kind of like a third person left for dead.
So it's kind of like one person like I'm gonna
check the map and everybody's just covering them
because he can get a textile Yeah, and you you
walk through the city and it's it just it looks
really cool And the fact that was whole four
-player co -op thing like totally sold and then
I guess just like the crew at any time another
Another team can show up in your game Mm -hmm,
and you engage them in combat But now are they
a part of the division? Here's how they didn't
really address that but here's how I think it
works Okay, because it's a versus mode. I think
what happens is if if we run across them in our
game They look like a group of enemy combatants
Okay, and if we spawn into their game. We look
like enemy combatants to them Mm -hmm, but it's
you're still playing against real people There
they're there in their game their members of
the division in our game We're members of divisions,
but to each other you're opposing factions. We're
opposing factions So it it looks really cool
It's it's Daner said it was the first game that
it was a must buy for him, and I have to agree
because it looks really great I'll have to see
more on that. There's who or who is it you're
fighting at ours. You're I don't know like there
was a hint Some kind of nasty crawling around
inside of a police station Like this this thing
has mutated people yes, there's a it's gonna
turn into Raccoon City There's a hint of that.
You don't ever see anything directly The only
time you're fighting your only only thing I saw
them fighting was you know guns Yeah, dudes with
guns, but in the police precinct they look down
a hall a long hallway and something Scatters
by on four legs It's like how like wow, what
was that and then it's like all the building
chicken. We got to get out But it looks kind
of neat, you know It's got the it's got the skill
tree like your character levels up as you play
and like I said the whole ability to like play
excuse me while you're on the go and Stuff like
that. It just seems it just seems really neat
and I guess like you can you can spawn in and
out at any time and Now, did they say anything
like if I spawn out, does that mean the rest
of the people playing have an AI guy? Nope, that's
it. He just you're just you're down a man. Yes.
So when you enter the game, you're by yourself.
And what so far? Yes, if I play by myself, there
is no one else until one of you guys gets on.
Yeah. Or if I join with randoms. Yep. And what
and what's interesting is you just you it's kind
of like a seamless thing, like you'll walk around
a corner and. Your guy will be there or like
in the in the in the demo that they played the
live demo that they played Which is running on
the PlayStation 4? What systems is it both systems?
It's both systems. Okay, but they were playing
on ps4 They like there was two guys that were
playing in there by themselves and They were
walking down the street and all of a sudden you
heard this girl's voice come over the intercom
And she's like I'll meet you guys at the next
intersection Well, she spawned in the game, but
she didn't spawn in right next to them. She just
spawned into the okay So yes, you just spawn
somewhere yes, and you have to meet up. Oh, that's
that's cool that I like and then when they When
they're in the middle of like this combat sequence
with some guys that had taken over the local
police station their other buddy just they were
like getting overwhelmed and their other buddy
like just showed up like that that quadricopter
showed up over the battlefield and it said so
-and -so and then it said tablet in parentheses
which just meant he wasn't actually playing he
was on his phone or a tablet device and he was
like he was highlighting where targets were so
that it was easier for everyone on the ground
to take them out is that all the person can do
is move around and target I I don't know What
he's capable of what you're capable of doing
from a tablet like they haven't really gone into
that much stuff. So It was cool. I'm excited
Like like I said, I kind of agree with Dan it
was like the first must buy and it it looks really
good I think it's it's it's up there with like
bad. I don't think it looks as good as battlefield
for but I think there's like It's interesting
enough. It's more. It's more a different creature.
Yeah, I think there's more going on in this too
I mean obviously the environments aren't like
destructible like they are in battlefield, but
I just feel like there's more going on They say
um Did they say if that? Tablet thing has any
is it usable in that versus mode I? Don't know
cuz I can see one team having a huge advantage
if they have someone spotten We look like okay.
This is what happened the game kind of and the
demo that they showed ended on them Like coming
up against another group of guys. It didn't show
them fighting that group of guys They were like
they came up and they're like oh, it's get ready
for PvP. There's another group of guys And the
camera kind of pulled up and it kind of became
like this arena style combat thing Like it was
like a like kind of like the the world it was
really where the camera pulled up and it was
looking down from the from above and the The
arena it looked kind of like a paintball field
would you know like and then the camera was like
starting to come back down and then it cut out
of the It cut out of the demo So it's kind of
like you might when you get in that PvP because
it's just four versus four it might it's kind
of like It's like this is the area boom. Yes,
like this is now where you get to fight in and
then once you clear them out You can yeah, it's
gonna say you wipe them out and then proceed
so but it looks It looks pretty big They were
playing on like an island in New York, and you
could move across to like other sections of New
York Does the entire game place I just the entire
game take I don't know I think you can go to
other places Why don't you have any information?
I just I'm telling you what I saw Geez, maybe
you should watch some of this stuff. I was working
so but That's pretty much it Think Ubisoft so
far has had the best showing but I think EA has
had the best -looking game so far Which would
be battlefield battlefield? Yeah Do we know if
the PlayStation one is gonna overlap games or
is it gonna be all all different stuff? Don't
know. I hope it's not some of part of the host
me at some of it is the same because I haven't
seen it yet Probably some stuff, but like I said
we're gonna have we got 20 minutes until the
PlayStation conference And I need to find out
how to view that stream You can do it on your
PlayStation Or or on any video game website,
but you got really quiet Joe I Didn't hear I
didn't know anything about the those games and
doesn't sound like they're interesting to me.
He was masticating But so yeah, we're gonna take
another break and when we come back on the other
side we'll have Sony's conference to talk about
and give reactions to on the fly so 299 drop
the mic walk away Now that Xbox has come out
at 5. I don't see PlayStation being That far
from that price point. Well. Here's the problem
does Sony if Sony doesn't put the camera in there
Yeah, they can undercut Yeah, if the camera is
a separate accessory. Yeah. Well, because they've
already said the camera is not necessary. I don't
know if they've said it's not in the box. Because
it's one of those things where it'll end up being
like the first Kinect. If you don't sell it in
the box, no one's going to use it. Which, now,
I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing. I'm
just saying, like, it's kind of like the 360,
not every one of them coming with a hard drive.
Yeah. It'll end up being one of those. Things
again, so but you know we'll get to see what
the box looks like which is exciting. I think
that I'm gonna be a boy I do hope I do hope it's
not I mean, okay It's gonna be a big black box
But I hope it's just got a little more aesthetic
appeal than the Xbox one or the x -bone or whatever
Sony usually has some Style well, there's there's
always have kind of like a nice smoothness to
them. They usually have some kind of curve Yeah,
except for the new one Joe. I'm sorry So, but
yeah, we'll be back on the other side of that
with our reactions and Hope to see you then We
can't see them ever. Well, no, they'll stick
around. No, we can't see them. Yeah Whatever
you're not gonna stop listening to the podcast
now, so we'll see you We won't see them. We'll
talk at you on the other side better The Pull
Bag is the GCRN's place for everything you need
in the comic book world. We focus on new and
current comics, while also tackling a few back
issues here and there. So join the entire GCRN
crew and see what issues the hosts have with
today's panels. You can find The Pull Bag on
iTunes and GeekCastRadio .com. Make your great
escape into comics! I think it is the pull bag
on Geocast Radio. In this segment, we are going
to be talking about the Sony press conference.
It's going to be a little bit different because
unlike the previous two segments where we recorded
them after the conferences, we recorded this
one before the conference. Before the conference,
yeah. Dun, dun, dun. We recorded this one 48
hours later almost. So. We've had time to kind
of dig through and hear some more information
here and there about the Sony conference and
what they've announced than the other ones. So
also furiously masturbate. Yes. So with that
in mind, here for this segment, as usual, myself,
Michael Powers, I'm joined again by Joe Reed.
Hello. Sean Diedrich. Hey. And Daner is joining
us. Hi. So, Danner, I thought since you weren't
there for the other two segments, maybe you would
like to share your thoughts on Microsoft EA and
Ubisoft? Not the PlayStation one? No. No? Okay.
Okay. Well, you know, I just wanted to give you
a chance to say your piece. I was gonna say Ubisoft
was the only one that I watched outside of Sony.
Okay, and I think I experienced the Xbox conference
via Twitter and I could feel how much I'd be
wasting my time if I was to actually watch the
press conference. Yeah. I was completely content
with the Twitter feed and then I checked out
a couple of trailers online. And that was about
it. Okay, now whenever I think of the Xbox conference
all I can think of is what's his face going hey?
Do you want an offline experience? We have a
system for that Xbox 360 360 like how big how
it's like you can no Bigger give someone the
middle finger than that so just just so we can
see if we're all on the same page here How'd
that $4 .99 price tag rub you? It hurts more
now knowing that the PlayStation's only gonna
be $3 .99. No, I was asking Danner. I thought
$4 .99 was too much. Okay. And for all the surveillance
they're doing on me, they should be paying me
to have that. Exactly. We should get kickbacks
from the advertisement that they're gonna be
pulling out of the Kinect to specifically target
me. That'd be nice. first so Sony got up on stage
and They showed off two PlayStation 3 games.
I Think they showed off beyond two souls and
the last of us I think they're maybe right frismo
6 and Gran Turismo 6 all look great Whether that's
your cup or tea or not all the games look great
that they showed for the ps3 You know looking
forward to playing last of us later this week.
And then, did they even touch on the Vita? They
did. Yeah, a little bit. It was mostly how it's
gonna react, interact and stuff. Yeah, because
they didn't really, at the conference, they didn't
really go into games that were coming out, because
I kind of, I was expecting them to talk about
Tearaway, but they never really showed anything
about Tearaway there. They showed off You know
Microsoft got up on stage and they're like, you
know, we support the indie developer community
and they show off Minecraft And as I said earlier,
you know, does that even count as an indie game
anymore? Then Sony gets up on stage and they
showed off what eight ten different indie titles
that are coming to the PlayStation 4 and Vita
Which I will totally buy and ps3 Yes, I I mean
there was some up there that kind of made me
go maybe but Definitely nothing that made me
go. I don't want that Then they showed off the
you know the box that everybody wanted to see
What do you guys look sharp Nah, it's a black
wedge eraser. Yeah But what do you guys think
is it do you like the way it looks? Do you hate
the way it looks? This is just a ship with the
system looks like it What's it's what it does
in my it's in my opinion I don't know why so
many people are getting hung up on what it looks
like it's what the system does and It's what
it's gonna provide. I don't it could look like
it could literally be a replica of a giant steaming
pile of shit If it plays the games I want to
play, I will gladly stick my disc in shit. I'm
so glad you pronounced disc so well there. Way
to enunciate. No problem. I want to make sure
I did not fuck up that enunciation. Because you
screw that up a little bit and then you got your
dick in shit and there's no coming back from
that. Oh, there's coming back. Tell Mike about
last night. What? The fact that his penis was
buried in my bulbous ass So this is going downhill
Yep Yeah, but you ever go kind of fun. It's like
rolling when you're kids fun. I Okay, but I just
want to talk about this for a second. Okay, because
I I think that Looking at the ps4 first of all
it's kind of deceptive in the end how big it
is because it's actually not that much bigger
than the PlayStation slim the ps3 slim Not really
and it looks thinner Which is great because the
one thing that was concerning me about these
next -gen consoles was will they fit in my entertainment
center? with a euphemism without cooking themselves
to death and Well, I was concerned about the
Xbox one until they announced the $500 price
tag and then quickly became unconcerned with
that but I am glad that the ps4 is smaller and
I As for how it looks, I'm just glad I get to
stick it in my entertainment center and it disappears
I don't have to stare at it because again not
a euphemism I find both systems to be pretty
offensive to me to my sensibilities. Anyways,
you mean Physicality only Yes Okay. Do you know
if they came up with a measuring unit that was...
Could they measure it in number of Wii U's big?
Like, how many Wii U's big is the PS4? Or how
many Wii U's big is the Xbox One? It's so tiny.
Well, I think if I remember correctly, the Wii
U is half the size of the PlayStation 3 Slim
that Daner and I have. So that would make the
PS4 two Wii U's. Excellent or it's probably even
it might be two ps2s taped together and Would
you say that the Xbox one is two is three we
use or two and a half? Two and a half But I'll
also say that you know Supposedly the Xbox one
is proportionate to my 16 by 9 television that
I'm looking at which whatever Stop, you know,
stop making shit up So wait the Xbox one is as
big as a 16 by 9. Yeah, it's as big as the TV
in my family room In fact, you have to have a
TV my size or it doesn't disappear You have to
get the dwarf it with what's around it Don't
worry because even if you do there's that gargantuan
block box of a Connect hanging on the top of
your TV Okay, screw it. I know what everybody
wants to talk to talk about Everyone wants to
talk about when Jack Tretton got up on stage
after we almost fell asleep Because towards the
middle of the Sony press conference while I was
delighted with what I was seeing It got a bit
dry, but horrible, but it may have been because
I Sat through three other press conferences,
and I'd been in the same spot on the couch all
day No, I had it was okay, and I was passing
out all right I just I just wanted to make sure
that it wasn't just you know me I mean I know
we all said that we were thoroughly bored, but
I wasn't sure if it was like outside forces at
play or if it was actually the conference itself.
I was mere moments from typing horrendous things
into the Skype chat. Just to keep me awake. But
Jack Tretton gets up on stage and he starts taking,
you know, sucker punches at Microsoft in their
DRM policies and they're always on connection
policies and. I believe the first one was they
will not if you you know you buy a disc. It's
your disc you can Trade it in you can give it
to a friend you can sell it used do whatever
you want Do whatever you want the business model
that customers have been familiar with for this
many years it works We're gonna keep it the same
and everyone gets up on their feet standing ovation
Cheers apparently there was some form of crying
going on That was you that was not me But it
was something to see And then you know he wasn't
done there when it died down a little bit He
fired back with the fact that they will not require
your system to connect to the internet It's like
you do not have to check every every day I do
believe that it came it he they're actually going
to adopt what the 360 does now where The disk
has to be in the drive to play it, but it's still
installed to your hard drive Which is fine I
mean, that's what I do on my 360 right now anyways.
Isn't that essential with a PS3 disc anyways?
Because it installs it no matter what. But not
every game is installed, and even when they do
have an install, sometimes it's not the entire
game. It might be like a texture pack or something.
But now, both systems will have full game installs.
It's just that I'm fairly certain that the PS4
is going to require you to put the disc in to
play said game. Then he got up I can try to remember
what there wasn't there three things. He said
no No, always on check. No always on connection
in the price point in the US in the used games
and then You know they they went away, and they
showed destiny Which I think kind of got us.
You know we're all awake at that point in time
Cool as hell yes, I I believe I read it. There's
a joke on Twitter that said Microsoft opened
up their press conference with Metal Gear Solid
5 as an FU to Sony, and Sony closes out their
conference playing Halo 5 on a PlayStation 4.
The one thing I want to say about Destiny beyond
the fact that it looks like, you know, a spiced
up Borderlands, this that and the other thing,
I didn't think Bungie could make games that look
like that. Oh, it's like an open world. I'm Sean
my degree with this to me It had more of a mass
effect type of a field do it like I was definitely
is I it looks like if Borderlands if they took
this the silliness of Borderlands away and threw
in Mass effect. Oh totally I I agree with that
I'm just saying I didn't realize that they could
make games that looked like that because all
they've made is Halo and a couple of other games
before that Will say there was that one part
when he's like he got the gun of the thunder
boomer or whatever the hell it was called It's
like listen to the thunder. I was like, I can't
hear it. It just sounds like bullets. Shut up.
I I liked that when you went up against like
what I'm assuming is a raid boss you were joined
by other players Well, uh, yeah. Yeah, those
huge that huge thing. Yeah, so and then after
the destiny video gameplay gameplay video Wish
I could remember the guy's name. He was another
sony representative. I think he's like the president
the sony president in the United States He got
up there and announced the price point which
was 399 and The crowd went apeshit again. I She
want like when the guys Becky you supposed to
say 499. Oh shit Damn um now lot of people thought
that that this might have been Sony's you know
there's been stories that you know they made
these changes at the last minute after Microsoft
went first in the day that they came and you
know decided a bunch of stuff for the last second
like the price and all that stuff but Sony publicly
Sony has come out and said that no the digital
rights management that use games stuff and the
price point was all decided like way back in
February. They just said that the company's official
line and every executive that I've heard give
an interview has all said the same thing. It's
that they didn't want, they didn't see a reason
to change the model, which is why - Wait a second,
wait a second, back up. They actually had a meeting
where everybody was on the same page and had
the same answers at their company Yeah, man Microsoft
should take a lesson from that But they They
didn't see the reason to change up the model
so they didn't they weren't and they weren't
going to change up the model So they didn't feel
a reason to announce anything Until everybody
went crazy because of what Microsoft was doing
And then that whole big, you know, the Twitter
campaign and stuff, the hashtag PS4 No DRM started
up. And they said that, you know, they really
wanted to come out and say something right then
and make everyone feel good about the system.
But they decided to wait until E3 so they could
just stick it to Microsoft in the most public
way possible. And they did a really good job.
Every time Microsoft has someone at Microsoft
has opened their mouth. They've dug themselves
a deeper hole Oh, how have they dug in it in
a lot of ways it reminds me of the Sony stuff
back in 2006 uh -huh with the 499 599 price point
and the arrogance of being the number one box
in the home Everything box and there are people
out there that are trying to downplay the 399
price point and a lot of this is like clickbait
on the internet to sell you know make sure you
get your your clicks and stuff like that but
you know people are saying that the worst thing
that Sony I think Sony has done as far as the
ps4 is concerned is put multiplayer behind the
PlayStation putt plus paywall which for me having
an Xbox as long as I've had it doesn't See and
after I will point out this after actually having
PlayStation Plus now and using it and seeing
how How useful and how much better it is the
next box live? I don't see that as an issue in
the slightest because I mean you're going as
long as I have a PlayStation system or systems
I will stick with PlayStation Plus because I
see the benefits of it. Yeah, well not only that
I mean if you sign up They give you a $60 game
for the PlayStation 4, so you come out $10 ahead.
Yeah. Yeah. And I know people were like, well,
now you've got to consider into the fact that
it's like $4 .50 now, because now you have to
buy a year of PlayStation Plus to go along with
it. You don't have to do shit. If you want to
play online, yeah, you do. But a lot of people,
especially when it comes to the PlayStation,
A lot of people play the single -player games.
A lot of people don't even pay attention to the
multi. Plus, all of the non -gaming stuff is
not behind that wall still. Yes. So I wonder
if the weird cloud -based gaming things that
happen like the the driver AI in, well, that's
in Microsoft system, but I wonder if some of
that passive online stuff will work or if it
won't just will be the multiplayer that doesn't
work. My assumption is is what will be allowed
will be the same as if you just unplugged your
system from the internet in terms of gameplay
I if there was actually no connection to the
outside world with the exception of maybe leaderboards
or something I think that I think what Joe is
saying is will it will like a game like four
is a five Still ping the cloud cert the Xbox
one cloud servers if you don't have Xbox live
I Think they will I would have to for some of
the games that they're describing I I think it
will I think it's like when you want to engage
in any kind of multiplayer Thing is when you're
gonna have to get behind the the Xbox live paywall
And and Sony has come out because Sony's gonna
have a free -to -play model as well They said
that their free -to -play model its publishers
discretion whether they the the consumer has
to be a PlayStation Plus member or not to be
able to play online But that's only free to play
games. Yeah. I know yesterday there was a little
bit of panic because Jack Trenton went on game
trailers and said that the DRM used game thing
would be up to the publishers. Yeah. And. I have
to I have to applause Sony applaud them again.
Because Jack Trenton went on there and said that
and you know that shot around the internet almost
as fast as he said it and As soon as Sony saw
that he had said that They came out with a you
know, the the official public statement which
is It's exactly like it is now if EA wants to
charge you five dollars for an online pass They
can charge you $5 for an online pass. So it's
the model that we know without any extra check
-ins or, you know. Yeah. And so it was kind of
like people were trying to find the chink in
what Sony had announced. And people are still
trying to find the chink in what Sony had announced.
And it's mostly the people at Microsoft. And
I've heard the, you know, it's going to cost
you $450 to play games on the PS4. Well, guess
what? It costs 560 to play on the Xbox. So I
put at least there's no space points. Yeah. So
I'm sorry, Sean, even one to say something. Yes.
Thank you. I have absolutely no problem switching
to play state as as being an Xbox owner Switching
to PlayStation paying for PlayStation plus if
they can give me the online experiences that
I'm used to for the Xbox I don't I don't I want
to go into things and be able to talk to people
I don't want it to be a pain in the ass that
hook up with my friends and games. I don't want
Service interruptions for weeks at a time. I
think if they take that month like Take that
money and use it to have a dedicated online division
or whatever That's bigger than whatever they
used before there was an interview last night
that says that that money the PlayStation plus
money Not only is it gonna they're gonna continue
to give you You know free games every month and
add to your instant game collection But they
said that they're going to put that back into
their infrastructure Good see that That's the
the big hope that I have for the PlayStation
because I've completely abandoned Nintendo and
completely abandoned Microsoft because of the
decisions that they've been making and Yeah,
when I do buy a next -gen system, it's gonna
be a ps4 but I am nervous that the online stuff
will still kind of be a pain in the neck to connect
and to Talk to my friends and hook it up and
set it up. But I really have a feeling that since
the development for the PS4 kind of shifted to
Europe and the Western guys that it'll probably
be a bit more. Well, I mean, you said you said
before that they're putting a headset in the
box, right? It's well, this is like a cell phone
headset. Like it's a it's a earbud. It's a Bluetooth.
No, no, no. I don't know. It plugs into the controller
like the original Xbox headset did. But it's
in here. Yeah, it's like the ones that come with
your iPhone. Yeah I'm fine with that. Just putting
that in the box will make the likelihood of people
talking online Much better. Well what I was gonna
what I was gonna say is Danner can test this
because he's the only person I've actually tried
this out with party chat works on the Vita It
works very well, and that's a little I mean,
I'm saying this just for like a comparison thing,
but that's like a little rinky -dink thing compared
to the PlayStation 4. Not only that, I've read
an article that said that, because I know the
other day we were talking about system resources
and that the Xbox, the Xbox One, like three gigs
of that is used for the operating system and
then the developers have five gigs to play with.
Apparently with the PlayStation 4, it's 1 gig
for the operating system and 7 for developers.
Well, I mean PlayStation has always had like
a simpler operating system, I think. Xbox tries
to do too much shit sometimes. They got cross
game chat to work on the Vita simply by having
768 megs of RAM in it. So giving the system...
as much RAM as it does, the cross -game chat
should work. Now, whether or not their chat codec
is as good as Xbox Live remains to be seen, but
that can always be improved. So, I think what
shocked me was the $399 price point. You thought
it was going to be more? No, well, I mean, no,
I said it was going to be $399. My long shot
was you know them going back to the 299 price
point. I didn't think that was gonna happen I
I know I was just like long shot 299 because
that would blow everybody's mind I I'm just glad
they came in under that and They showed off more
things that I wanted and their box doesn't have
anything I'm not paying for anything with the
PlayStation 4 that I'm not going to use Like
the connect like the HDMI pass -through for your
freaking cable box. I I don't want to pay for
that stuff I mean, maybe Microsoft will release
a version that doesn't come with the HDMI pass
-through on it Who knows? Describe what that
is. It's a set top box. Basically, they want
you so you can use your Xbox for everything.
Everything would go through your Xbox. Hey, I
want to watch cable that goes through my Xbox.
I want to watch movies, whatever you want to
do. They want they want you to make your Xbox
vital to your entire entertainment system. So
you have a cable box right now, right, Joe? Yep.
So basically what you would do is you'd plug
your Xbox one into your TV on input one. You
would plug your cable box into the back of your
Xbox One. Yeah, instead of into your TV. And
then there's this little blaster that you run
from your 360 down over to your cable box, and
then you can say, Xbox, I want to watch Cartoon
Network, and it'll change your thing to Cartoon
Network. I see. Which is, I mean, that's a cool
thing, but I don't need that. Yeah, I mean, I
don't even have TV. Me neither. I don't have
cable. Have the interweb. That's yep. That's
all I've got actually technically I'm paying
for both, but I only have the internet But I
that's I Don't really know what else to say it
is kind of like the drop -the -mic thing right
399 done If they just said 350 I'd have one pre
-ordered already I did go and you'd still have
an erection if it's a 350. I did go on Amazon
that night right before I got in bed and pre
-ordered one because the nice thing about Amazon
and also the bad thing about Amazon is you can
pre -order something, but they don't take your
money right away. Yeah, sometimes. Every time
I do it, sometimes I forget. Well, what I bet
I pre -ordered something. What's kind of neat
and I kind of realize I can do this with my bank
is I know if I know when something's coming out,
can set a goal so I can have that money there
by that time they're gonna charge my card and
Then I can just go ahead and pre -order stuff
so I just jumped in line, and I'm really glad
that I did that because Amazon is guaranteeing
right we talked about this before we started
recording they Had to do two separate editions.
There's no difference between the two, but they
had to do two separate editions on their website
And they have a launch edition and a standard
edition the launch edition all they're do all
that is is you're guaranteed to get it on day
one And then the standard edition is we'll ship
it to you whenever we get them It's like hey
If we can get it to you on day one great if it
takes a week then sucks to you exactly So I'm
I'm kind of glad that I just jumped in there
as a guy You know I kind of hemmed and ha and
I was like you know what they're not gonna take
my money right now anyways I might as well just
get in line so Just I don't know. I'm the only
thing that I'm I want to know Is about the controller?
What about I've heard that you know it feels
better it feels good in your hand the sticks
feels the sticks feel better because they're
concave instead of convex Yes, and you know that
the job. I'm proud of you the triggers You know
the triggers have more a little more feedback
to them or your fingers can sit on them easier
They look like they made them a little more trigger
-shaped. They are yeah, they didn't make them
as wide It's like the old buttons and they made
them more of a hook They still don't have something
going on the bottom which we'll just find out
whatever um But the one thing I want to know
about is did they add any weight to it? Because
that I think Above and beyond like the stick
placement. I like the way the 360 I like the
weight of the 360 controller Just like a little
bit after hands yes But I haven't heard anyone's
I've just heard it says I've just heard people
say it feels really good in your hands Does do
you guys have anything you want to say about
it? And yeah, I wish those joysticks were offset
Yes, but they're further apart Because of the
touchpad in the middle of it, and I think that
might be enough for me. I don't know I'll have
to use it um I I foresee me if I really want
to get in a call of duty and stuff on there And
unless I get pick pick it up quick. I see me
buying like a third party Controller because
you can buy third -party PlayStation 3 controllers
that look just like Xbox controllers, right and
I can I can Completely describe why I want those
offset We call them offset joysticks, but my
right thumb is floating over the buttons My left
thumb floats over the d -pad and I've got to
move it to their weird joystick on the left left
hand I want the joystick to be in the same position
as where my other thumb Spends all of its time
and because they're not offset. You've got to
move your thumb down to use it I can't it's just
not as comfortable. Yeah, it's like you almost
have to think about where you're putting your
thumb Constantly and they're they're concave
now, and I think that will also that'll help
to write a bit I won't be slipping I slipped
off the joystick a bunch of times. Well like
you said we should stop sweating when you're
playing video games Dude, it's fucking intense
Okay Calm down. So who do we think? Came out
of who do we think came out on top of t3? Is
it Sony? Nintendo Nintendo they didn't even show
you that shit about the oh, yeah, though What
about it? Okay, the oh, yeah, right? They didn't
want to go they didn't want to go into the actual
conference, right? They so what they did was
they rented out a bunch of space directly across
from it outside across the street they rented
the ton of space, right? And I forget who it
was part of the E3 people found out that they
were doing it. So the E3 people rent out the
space directly in front of them and parked buses
in front like in front of their stands. So then
Ouya rented the spots on the other side of the
buses and put their advertisements there. And
then E3 called the cops on Ouya. The cops came
and they couldn't arrest them, but you they actually
called the cops. I don't think it's hysterical
And for me because I haven't been paying attention
that Ouya is the little set -top box that streams
the game to you It doesn't actually run or no,
but we has a $99 Android console that plays Android
games. Yeah It's it's basically like if you if
if you had an Android phone you like those games
or ever come on playing your breath on my TV
so Mean it's a little it's it's kind of like
it's not expensive. Like I said, he like he said
it's $99. It's not a big thing. Um Cheaper than
a tablet. Let's say you want to play it you want
to play it seems like a nice Hipster type of
a thing it is but and that's why they want to
set they separate themselves away from everything
But it just turned it just turned in this really
really funny thing that I found so amusing They're
like, oh, yeah, we're gonna park our buses in
front of you. Oh, yeah Well, we're gonna put
our advertisement in front of your buses Um I
love this country So Nintendo did I guess we
can unless you guys have anything else you want
to say about the Sony press conference I Mean
watch dogs look good didn't they you did a game?
They did a gameplay demo of watch dogs didn't
they yes they did yeah, it was With with the
I swear watch dogs about the division Yeah division
look cool, but they gotta stop naming characters
in video games t -bone Especially like I don't
know what it is. There's always like some gangster
name t -bone and this guy's white Well, they're
French so yeah, well they're weird Well if you
guys don't have anything else you want to say
about the Sony press conference We can talk about
when Nintendo brought yesterday Nintendo brought
something yesterday. Well, you know they showed
up with their pace paced pressure misery, you
know Smash Brothers brawl no Super Smash Bros.
Okay, and they showed up with Mario Kart 8 and
Joe's favorite X Which nobody's been talking
about X looks awesome. What is it? Don't know.
I think it's like a it's it's it seems like a
Xeno Gears game if I had a Wii U it still looks
like an open -world Xeno Gears Which for anybody
that doesn't know what that is, it's just it's
an RPG that had mechs in it So yeah, they were
mechs dinosaurs swords big floating islands.
It looked like honestly when I'm looking at it
It looked about as grand a scale as destiny did
to me It kind of looked a lot like that and the
graphics didn't look at that detail, but look
good They also showed up with Legend of Zelda
2, or yeah, Link to the Past 2. What? Yes. What
the frick did I miss that? They just given up
making new titles. Like I'm just gonna start,
we're gonna go back to old ones and number them.
What else did they show up with? Yeah, they're
doing Link to the Past 2 and Wind Waker HD. Wind
Waker HD, which I, there's, appears to... From
the developer video I watched on that more stuff
in it extra things. Yeah, it has a faster sale.
Oh That's good because that was the thing that
killed me at that game Fucking boring that would
be the other problem with that game So yeah,
it was like one -third the length I thought it
was going to be because as soon as I said go
get all the pieces of the Triforce I expected
eight more dungeons and like what I got them
all and the game is over what See a Nintendo
showed up I Don't know I'm they can't they didn't
I didn't hear anything come out of there that
I made me want to go and buy a Wii U again They're
like here's all the stuff you would expect us
to lot this put out with the system now that
said I am sad that Bayonetta 2 is an exclusive
I'm sad in the same way. Well actually I'm I'm
sad that it's an exclusive because it's being
published by Nintendo But I'm hoping that maybe
we'll get a lollipop chainsaw to on the actual
next -gen consoles I I pose this question on
Twitter into Danner. I do you think we'll get
a Wii U price cut this year since there's a $50
difference between you know I think it will milk
the price point up until the other systems launch.
I think we will see a price cut this year, but
I think it's gonna be very, very close to the
launch window of the PS4 and the Xbox One. If
I know Nintendo, I do not believe they will drop
the price point, one, because they're already
losing money on the hardware, and two, they're
already... 150 bucks cheaper than the ps3 they
won't use this as an opportunity to drop the
price at all Yeah, but they're only $50 cheaper
than a ps4 It's a classic Nintendo fashion. There's
gonna be three different colors of We use by
Christmas all packaged with different games.
I Mean, I don't I don't think they'll package
anything with a game this year Either that's
my that's my prediction. Well all they have left
on the shelf is the pros with with Nintendo land
Yeah, they took away the other ones. They took
away the $200 the $300 one Yeah, base system.
You can't buy it anymore. They recalled them
all well. They had no business selling that anyway
But I mean it's just they're not getting the
I guess Infinity Ward announced today that they
are working on a Wii U version of Call of Duty
ghosts So they're not being completely abandoned
by next -gen and they are getting Arkham Origins,
but other than that I didn't see a whole lot
of Nintendo love from third -party developers
again. I did see one thing that was really funny.
Deus Ex Human Revolution, there was going to
be a director's cut released only on the Wii
U. They've since changed that to it's going to
be on everything. Yep. And they had made stuff
special that you're going to do on the tablet.
Now they're like, oh, you can do that on your,
they're going to make it so you can do it on
your Vita and on your, you know, Whatever tablet
or whatever you're gonna use for your Xbox smart
glass I'm so I'm actually kind of happy about
that cuz I cuz I want to play that I really feel
bad for Nintendo. I do too. I don't screw them.
I Feel bad because that's where you know, that's
that's how I got in They got me into gaming in
the first place and it's like I I wish they were
getting the games I do But they're not It's their
fault. I mean they released a next -gen system.
That was definitely current gen Too bad. It's
not the Trojan horse. I was hoping it would be
yep me too Now is there anything that was announced
as I I know that you know that Dan I'm not sorry
Sean's he's still on the fence, but you know
three of the four of us are firmly in the I don't
know if there's anything Xbox can show me right
now. Unless you press a button and it turns into
a sex robot. Fingers crossed. Is there anything
that Microsoft showed or that... My example is
Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U. But is there anything
that somebody showed that was an exclusive for
something that wasn't PlayStation 4 that you...
Well, I'll be no battlefield just has a timed
exclusive on the Xbox where the stuff will get
there Which is weird. I was talking to Mike about
this year, which is weird because on the ps3
Battlefield games always had a time to exclusive
with the PlayStation Because Call of Duty was
the Xbox whereas they would get this the DLC
first there and Then it would eventually make
like a month later. It would make it to the other
system, right? But I'm the only thing is I because
like I said, I don't think there's anything Microsoft
can show me that will make me want to buy it
Because I would have to give them a hundred dollars
more Like you said for stuff that I don't really
give a shit about right Oh a connect that I probably
won't use unless they force me to oh wait, I
have to keep it plugged in anyways Yeah Or the
thing for the cable box, which I don't have one
But, um, I will be bummed to not be playing Halo.
Yeah. For me, it's there's two of them. One is
Plants vs. Zombies, Garden Warfare. But like
we said... Is that an Xbox only? Well, it's Xbox
One and Xbox 360. So we'll still be able to play
it. Plus, it didn't look that, oh my God, crazy
graphical that I don't think the differences
would be that amazing. No. But believe it or
not it is a frostbite 3 game Which is which is
interesting it just shows the the flexibility
of that engine And the other one is Titanfall
Which I saw that not that interested to be honest
with you I I think I think Titanfall is a timed
exclusive I don't even know. I'm not like I saw
the trailers myself suffer not incredibly. Oh
my god interested in it I I'm interested in it
for two reasons one giant robots and two. It's
not Call of Duty But it looks and I will the
next Saints Row is gonna have giant robots. I
don't have to worry about that So does anyone
else have it see anything that they wish was
gonna that isn't gonna be on the ps4 that they
wish was No, I'm trying to go already in Hey
make an announcement today say that said the
last Guardian is still in development and it
will eventually come out Who's developing it
because they closed the developing house? No,
they didn't know they did the guy the lead the
lead designer He left Sony but is still working
on the game like he no longer works for Sony,
but he's freelancing to finish the game. Yeah
That's all that really happened there. The only
game I'm kind of interested in is the new Insomniac
game. That looked kind of interesting. What was
it called? That Sunset... Boulevard? Or Overdrive?
I don't really see that. Is it Sunset Boulevard
or Overdrive? Overdrive. Yeah. That looked interesting.
I saw... It looked like Team Fortress 2 met Crackdown.
Crackdown. There's one. That whatever whatever
happens with their that's just gonna suck. Well
watch that I watched that Sunset Overdrive video
again today and it reminds me of What fuse was
supposed to look like? Yeah, I also agree with
that and pain the PlayStation 3 physics game
where you throw a guy through plate glass Just
it reminded me a whole lot of that and I remember
when we when Joe and I were watching the conference
I said that now we know where the Fuse art style
went So All right, what was we'll wrap this up
here Besides the Sony conference in the 399 price
point and they're you know, they're saying to
gamers You know our business model is gonna be
the status quo What was your favorite thing?
That we've seen so far at e3 Will do me last
John I like when you talk dirty um my favorite
thing Watch dogs just bought way actually that
true that gameplay stuff they showed with assassins
for how smoothly it went from land to ship was
pretty freaking sick it yeah, I watched a HD
YouTube clip of that after the the thing was
yeah That's what I did for a lot of those things
because the streaming is messing up I went back
and watched them later and boy do they look a
lot better it look that game looks so And they
can only look better than that too, which is
scary That's yeah, that's how much whatever the
inner webs can handle Showing to you the two.
Yeah, the two games that impressed me the most
are ones that aren't gonna be affected by Internet
connection, so it's kind of the single -player
aspects of it assassins and watchdogs Danner
You gotta say I think I'm looking forward to
The division That's the Tom Clancy one, correct?
Yes. Yeah, that's the one. Yeah. Yeah me too
and that looks that would destiny looks good
That looks cool, but that's one of those that
seems like a game. It's gonna be like Borderlands
I I'm not gonna play by myself the both of those
games actually Well, I just think I I'm wondering
when the division comes out Because it seems
like one of those games that we might be able
to pick up at that point in time where you know
We're done with destiny We need something else
as for player co -op just so we can get online
and hang out And it seems like it could be one
of those games Yeah, let's get online and go
explore this you know, whatever I'm I'm excited
for battlefield battlefront battlefield battlefield
Because just the physics engine in that looked
amazing and yeah I'm very surprised that I'm
even remotely interested in a game. That is a
military shooter That is it's kind of terrifying
to me. Sony has done things to me the past couple
of days that make me question who I am. Again,
if you take out what you said, Sony sounds so
perverted. They've done things to me that make
me question myself as a man. It's all scary to
me. I hope something happens that I can actually
afford this thing and play with you guys when
you all get it. Yeah, I really hope that scene
that they had in Battlefield with the skyscraper.
I hope that's not a scripted event. Yeah, I really
hope that was around in our own little man going
up buildings for fun. Dude, that'd be so cool.
Let's level this city. Are you kidding? That's
I would do nothing except grab explosives and
just booby trap everything. I was going to say
that's what buildings are now. Thanks. I did
that in Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction.
Just go around and knock down buildings until
I broke the game and made it crash. It's like
it's just it's her. It's just like there's it's
flat. There's no more buildings. Yeah Well, that's
what I want I want there to be like schema games
that go on so long that the the area at the end
of the game Hardly resembles the area at the
beginning of the game. That's called Earth Defense
Force Really yep, um I think for me The surprises
of this show One I agree with Dan or about the
division It looks really cool and anytime I can
do a four -player co -op game. That's even better
I did like the whole you can run into another
group of players and it turns into PvP I think
the way that works is you're not like When we're
in our you know, we're all playing together and
we come across another group. We see them as
like insurgents or as the bad guy They're another
in their game. They're another group of four
in the division and they see us as bad guys.
I Think that's how it works. I don't think it's
gonna be division attacking division Yeah, plus
I saw that part you were telling me about in
the hospital or something moved Yeah, I don't
I don't think that's gonna be some kind of mutation.
I don't know just something about it It's just
I think it might be like a pack of dogs or something,
but well it could be but it looked like some
type of mutation Caused by the virus, but then
again, it's a Tom Clancy. So yeah, it doesn't
it doesn't really fit into the stuff But it does
seem I really hope that that whatever that tablet
thing was that the guy was doing. Oh Yeah, the
tablet integration and the smartphone stuff.
We've been seeing that's actually pretty neat
They have put it seems like they took the ideas
that have been laid down With smart glass and
stuff and just applying them across the board
Like, oh, you can't really do too much with this.
This game doesn't really. There's no tab. We'll
just have the tab. I have a completely separate
functionality that creates a commander that can
drop like they even showed it in. What was it?
Battlefield. I don't know that battlefield, but
Dead Rising three even had it. I don't remember
that. Oh, yeah. He calls in and he calls in an
airstrike. He designates an area. Someone else
on a tablet sends the airstrike. I thought that
was the commander in battlefield. No, I did that
too. Well, they did that too. That was also in
the air strike. Yeah, the did that all those
explosions that was sent by somebody on the tablet
no did um Correct me if I'm wrong didn't watch
dogs show off some type of tablet thing where
you're in a chase and somebody else can From
what I've heard about that they can't they take
control of cameras almost like in that trailer
They show where you were helping out that t -bone
guy how you were moving stuff Your friends can
get in on a tablet, take control of cameras and
hack those specific points for you. They have
no interaction, like they can turn stuff off,
turn stuff on, move the barricades. Need for
Speed Rivals even had something like that in
it too, where the person sitting next to you
could use their phone or the Vita or the smart
glass or whatever you want, and they could call
in all of your roadblocks and stuff for you.
while you're chasing down another racer yeah
um i mean all that it just seems really neat
i think we're yeah i i like that they're that
they're it's not just becoming some stupid little
thing there it's actually becoming useful it's
not it's not customize your loadout it's now
now yeah it's like hey you can get your thing
ready on the call of duty thing and when you
get into the next game it'll be changed for you
yeah now it's now it's play with your friends
even when you're sitting on the train So who
sits on trains, but besides the division mirrors
edge I'm looking forward to playing that again.
I really want to play part one and not suck at
it I've been debating on whether or not I should
fire up the first one again and for the record
it is not mirrors edge to it is a reboot Are
you still playing the same character? Yes, I
guess they're just Try they're they're going
back to the drawing board and they're going to
try and make it Appeal to a wider audience so
it does better I hope that means that they're
going to make it so you can get through the game
without having to pick up a gun I mean, I know
you can do that in the first one, but so hard
for I've heard I got like three quarters of the
way Through the game probably farther than that
and I just I was banging my head against the
wall And finally I had to pick up a gun so Yeah,
that's it. That's it for me Any last second things
you guys want to add No, no um have they said
anything else about what's coming in the box
besides It's the it's a controller like a set
of headphones that will come it will come with
a smartphone. Yeah It's the PlayStation itself
They have not said and I've asked on Twitter
various people I've asked about Kind of cables.
No. Well actually comes with an HDMI cable Mm
-hmm, and obviously comes with a power cable
and it comes with the USB cable for the controller
This is gonna come with composites for people
that don't know both both both the Xbox one and
the PlayStation 4 are HDMI connections only nice
They only support resolutions of 720p and 1080p
Now which I mean can you even buy an HDTV that's
not those well not it not so much anymore But
like when the place when they first started yeah,
like well when the PlayStation 4 first came out
it didn't do 1080i Or something there was some
weird thing with the resolution and one of the
resolutions was not supported and people didn't
people had 1080i but not 720p And so they couldn't
play them in HD until Sony added 1080i support
to the PlayStation or something like that. I
don't know. I didn't really follow it all that
closely. But no, we are truly out of the standard
definition era with this next generation of consoles.
Rough, rough, rough, rough. Which is something
people aren't really making that big of a deal
about. And my neighbor's dogs are going crazy.
That's why that's why you put sleeping medication
inside of like steak and throw it over So it
works in the movies it works in real life the
the one thing I have asked about and I haven't
gotten a Reply from anybody and I haven't seen
anyone mention it online is whether or not the
system has a power brick Yes for yeah same power
cord that it's been for 20 years I was good I
I was hoping that because I know that the only
PlayStation that has a power brick is the final
version of the PlayStation 2 The super crazy.
Yeah, the super super slim one has that's how
they made it slim right to get the inside and
put it in a power brick Yep, so I know that the
I know I'm curious about heat though Yeah, well
systems being more powerful and that looking
like a pretty compact system comparatively Well,
I'm wondering if that's gonna have a heat issue
like the 360s that when they first came out That's
what I've been concerned about Since figuring
out how big it is, but if you look at the pictures
of the back of it It's all vent and it's really
large vents. So it seems like I mean there's
Crazy things you can do with the internals and
thermodynamics and all this stuff. So it seems
like maybe you draw in air Like in one side of
the console where it's gonna be cooler and then
it exhausts out You know over the hardware and
I mean no one's really been able to say how loud
or quiet the system is because E3 is really loud
Right. I just want to plug in the first time
like it's like, man. And it's it's it's kind
of weird, right? If the if the PS4 doesn't have
a power brick, we know that the Xbox one does.
And the Xbox one is the size of my house. It's
like, how how are they doing it? What what what's
there's got to be some sacrifice. You can't make
everything smaller, more compact without there
being some kind of trade off. So I but if you
look at the. If you look at the PlayStation 3,
the one that Joe has and the one that Daner and
I have, there aren't that many vents on that
thing. At least not the one I think that Daner
and I have. There aren't a whole lot of vents
and yet, you know, that was a... There's... The
hardware that's in there is pretty good. So it's
all about, I guess, according to some people,
it comes down to how much power it actually uses
to determine how hot it actually gets. Yeah.
So maybe it doesn't use, maybe it doesn't consume
that much power when it's running, so it doesn't
get that hot. And maybe Microsoft just is going
overboard with their vents so they don't run
into a red ring situation again. Or maybe they
want to have a reason to sell a smaller box in
two years. Possibly. So. Yep, I had that same
concern, too, Shansi. But until I mean, I'm going
to like I said, I preordered mine and, you know,
hopefully everything. comes out okay I mean I
do I will admit though I do like blu -ray cases
better than the DVD cases so that'll be nice
white people problems yep so all right last call
for last opinions going once um have they said
um I know you won't be able to play PlayStation
3 games but what about all of the down are the
download Nothing nothing that's on the current
even on the network, right? Nothing It's but
they have said that their Gaikai cloud services
are supposed to come online in the US in 2014
and that's supposed to bring some ps3 backwards
compatibility But you know, that's it's basically
take whatever games that they possibly could
well what it's good I think what they they they
said that their origin their first their phase
one plans with the Gaikai cloud streaming is
to bring their triple -a PS3 games online, and
then these smaller lesser known titles. Gotta
make sure you're unchartered and infamous. Alright,
going once, going twice. Alright, we are out.
