About this Episode

We dive into the middle rounds of the Mae Young Classic tournament, discussing the high-stakes matchups from the Sweet 16 through the quarterfinals. We break down the performances of athletes like Kairi Sane, Bianca Belair, Shayna Baszler, and Toni Storm, analyzing how their specific styles and athletic backgrounds impacted the matches. The conversation also explores the behind-the-scenes realities of professional wrestling, including the prevalence of injuries in the tournament, the career journeys of competitors like Jazzy Gabbert and Serena Deeb, and the challenge of balancing in-ring action with limited television time.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the podcast

arena. Coming to the ring at this time. Oh, you

didn't know? You know I better call somebody!

First, representing this week in key, and from

parts unknown, he is Mike the Birdman. of the

incredible action. 32 athletes kicked off this

tournament. Only 16 could advance. For the defeated,

there were no moral victories. Their dreams of

becoming the inaugural Mae Young Classic champion

ended in anguish. Now, as round two begins, the

competition heats up even further. One step closer

to being champion, and yet still just a three

count or tap out away from the end of the road.

Tonight, the second generation powerhouse, Rachel

Evers, faces Mae Young protege, Abby Lathe. The

redemption story of Serena Deeb continues against

the Scottish powerhouse, Piper Niven. The veteran

Mercedes Martinez is primed to knock off Mexican

legend, Princesa Suey. And the supremely athletic

Bianca Belair takes on the sensational Kyrie

Sane. History continues as the Mae Young classic,

Sweet 16, begins right now. Hello and welcome

to mayhem mics. This is episode 29. We're getting

back to the Mae Young classic This is gonna be

part two of our Mae Young classic episode coverage

thing. We're gonna cover the final four episodes

or five actually Of the Mae Young classic tournament.

I'm of course TFU and Mike joining me is Ryan

and Flo Merkley. Hello, sir. Yay. Yay wrestling

Yeah, let's see if we remember any of these people

Hey, I just watched this. Yeah, you're okay.

I'm in trouble. I'm okay. You're in trouble That's

fine. I got a good memory so in issue 14 of the

Punisher he takes Shit, that's a wrong show Yeah,

I had like I know we had done the first four

episodes the first Round or whatever it was.

I'm like, okay, so we'll do the other four I

figured it was gonna be four not five and I go

to look at it I'm like episodes five to nine.

I thought it was like five to eight, but then

I realized Okay, I mean you could watch five

to eight but you're not gonna get much closure

And then they sort of did a special Bit too,

but anyway, we'll talk about that later. Yeah,

I didn't even watch that. I watched the beginning

You know, I watched all of episode 9 obviously,

but like the aftermath after we'll get to it

now then and we'll just talk about it now quickly

I mean one of the things they did was a lot of

the people who were at well not a lot of most

of the people who were out early They put them

in a tag match, you know three on three tag and

that was a smart thing a It's You know we talked

about this in the first round man jazzy gabbert

was a favorite was a favorite of everybody She

was a favorite of ours And she was oh the people

were chanting for the entire match and then at

the end Police sign jazzy was the chance everybody

gave hunter And it's interesting we'll get to

this is in a bit of the aftermath, but they did

try to sign her but she needed a really major

neck surgery it turns out so they went to sign

her then she had to pass their physical and it

was discovered she had a severe problem with

her neck and she needed major surgery to correct

it which she has now had as of only a couple

weeks ago and yeah i mean hopefully she can recover

from that because i mean A, hopefully she's fine

from it, because apparently it's, you know, really

serious. And then B, hopefully she gets really

lucky and is able to continue her career. So

she was on the Edge and Christian podcast to

talk about this, but it's just a really sad sort

of ending if this is it, because she finally

got her dream, which is to get signed to the

WWE. And suddenly, you know, she can't wrestle

because of injury and yeah, that's not wow. Yeah,

so hopefully there's a happy ending there. Uh,

she has overcome or, you know, I highly, I don't

usually recommend other podcasts, but I highly

recommend that episode of the edge and Christian

podcast. Her story is amazing. Like it should

be a movie and it's unbelievable what she's already.

overcome to get there so i have no doubt she's

gonna work hard at uh getting back so anyway

yeah that was one of the sort of things in the

aftermath we've it's funny because in the last

couple weeks there have been a handful of signings

from people who were about to talk about yeah

like they signed candice laray um kyrie yeah

well she's she was signed she's just Hasn't been

around for a bit because of an injury. She's

another one that got suffered some injuries in

this tournament in fact Then yeah, that's we've

talked about it before in the normal podcast

that man WWE is not having good luck with injuries

women it's yeah like yeah we mentioned before

like Dean's out for like nine months with a severe

injury to his arm you got Joe was apparently

out for even longer than they thought originally

and just with a random foot injury you know we

mentioned Cass before where he was about to maybe

make it big and then he tears his knee it's just

been a really crap year for them now in injuries

Yeah, and this pretty much started last year

It's not an easy thing to do that's why I always

get frustrated You know people like to laugh

at wrestling and say ah, it's not real that kind

of thing I mean, maybe the endings aren't, you

know, it's predetermined. Sorry if that ruined

it for anybody out there. Uh, the endings might

be predetermined, but man, the athleticism and

everything else is not. And the number of injuries

and serious injuries, you know, a lot of these

people are, you know, they're the working and

everything's getting faster and faster. You look

at a guy like Dean. And how quickly he does a

lot of the moves and that kind of thing and bouncing

around the ring and everything Yeah, that's gonna

take a toll on him. Yeah That's gonna not just

him, but that would take a toll on anybody and

it's funny cuz you look at the women and We just

add to the row rumble and you watch stuff like

this the may on classic and The women work pretty

much just as quickly as the men now and then

you look back at some of those old attitude era

matches you know the two minute ones where maybe

there's two moves yeah in two minutes and how

quickly that's gotten and just or how quickly

sorry it's changed and how much quicker everyone

is and you know episode five we start off with

abby lathe versus rachel everes everes was probably

the not the best match, we'll say, in the first

round. And then you watch the two of them work

here and it's much quicker and everybody's much

better. So I mean, just another example of everybody

works really hard in this and it's a pretty quick

match. Like it ends fairly quickly. It's only

a five minute match. So the one thing I noticed

about this and I obviously they have to keep

to a certain time limit. As I've watched throughout

episode five to nine, well I don't think they

said it in episode nine, but I could be wrong.

I just watched that just like right before we

hit the record button, so I'm pretty sure they

didn't say that. But episode five to eight, the

referee or the ring announcer or whoever had

said, oh, this is a match to determine blah blah

blah, it's a timed match, not exceeding 20 minutes

or 25 minutes or whatever. And I'm like, really?

like you actually say that like they don't see

that stuff in the main roster yeah they did for

each of these i guess it's just because i don't

really know why it is i don't really know why

it is either i mean maybe it's more for the audience

uh in the arena but i mean most of these matches

are i think some of the max of like the longest

matches are only like 10 minutes or so yeah in

the quarterfinals and yeah the longest match

is around 10 I think yeah I clocked it in at

10 minutes in this on this episode and that's

the longest match so yeah and they've got a 20

minute time limit I don't know maybe it's so

the people there don't think they're gonna you

know they film all these together so maybe so

the people in the arena don't think they could

get out at 2 a .m. I'm really tired. Don't make

me cheer for anyone Yeah, and some of the some

of the chants and cheers were so so cool I just

absolutely what I love about this is again, you

know women have always been in the WWE But as

you said most of the time it's been the model

era or the Diva era or whatever You know stupid

belts with like the butterfly and yeah But I'm

a girl and I can wrestle like That's not what

most of them fought to get there for You know,

but it's like, you know now they're taking it

really really serious and like you said last

time and you're saying now that some of these

people are already signed with WWE some of them

aren't and Or at the time that this was filmed

and shown on the WWE Network is obviously Classic

has been over for a while now because Kyrie just

came up or she came up to main roster again out

of NXT Yeah, she's still in NXT yeah But yeah,

she comes pops up for why I mean the you know,

the rumble was a special scenario They wanted

to get people from everywhere. So yeah Yeah So

for the fifth episode though Abby Lathes Defeated

Rachel Evers in the aforementioned first match

which was a solid match Evers has a much better

showing than she did the first time around they

just Everybody meshed a lot better this time.

Yeah Lathes one that's signed by the WWE. She's

been around there for NXT for a bit Shows up

once in a while Yeah, I like the match I like

Abby's moves more than I like Rachel but like

I Just preferred Abby's style more I think Just

some of the hits that any of these women's women

have taken in this in this tournament have just

been amazing We'll get to some of the really

really big ones a little bit later in the later

episodes, but wow Then you had Piper Niven versus

Serena Serena deep I Really like Piper I did

not expect Piper to have the accent she has when

I first saw her. Oh, yeah So Piper is a Larger

woman she in fact has some of the same moves

that Owens does For example to use that but man,

she's got a a look to her that very few other

Female or male wrestlers have she's one of the

ones that I'm still amazed Hasn't been signed

but then you look at so she and Tony Storm are

good friends in real life and I suspect they

both do really well the independent tours because

she they both wrestle seemingly everywhere and

So I think they just I don't know WWE need would

need a really good offer also I mean they're

both very young so neither of them are signed

which is unfortunate because they both have great

looks that are different than a lot of the other

stars and Timing or a financial or whatever looking

at Piper in this match and looking at her in

the first round the first stuff like she reminds

me at this point of a slightly different version

of Nia Jax but the one thing I'll say is Watching

some of her moves or a move set and I'm not trying

to you know pick on Nia Jax or anything uh but

Niven has a lot of strength yeah she does and

you know Jax a lot of her moves are quicker ones

where she doesn't necessarily lift people up

and whereas Piper does and you forget how strong

some of these women are one of the better examples

was we talked about it in the rumble they had

a moment where Beth Phoenix lifted up Nia Jax

yeah Beth pretended like it was a big deal But

she talked about actually her husband Edge talked

about it later that Beth has no problems picking

up an Ajax You know she she had to make it look

good for the camera And that's why somebody like

Piper almost reminds me of a Beth Phoenix in

that she's ridiculously strong You look at her

and you kind of forget about it But I mean her

finisher is a mission Oku driver where she has

like no issues lifting people up and just Slamming

them down. Yeah, she could take any of the They

probably lift me up and throw me down like Okay.

Well, I was gonna say You know, she could probably

take any of the men yeah, I know mixed Matt mix

matches are not really That's another thing in

WWE for a variety of reasons Other places have

done it though and some of them have won like

jazzy gabberts competed in mixed matches She's

also does MMA and that kind of thing though.

Yeah, we've mentioned before that Oscar's done

miss mixed matches Oscar could probably go I

we've mentioned this before she could beat the

crap out of me easily So Piper Niven won this

one and we talked about it before Sarita Deeb's

very good. I'd like to see her as sort of a trainer

Right, you know as we move as WWE moves forward.

She's got experience with them and that kind

of thing. It's kind of a Just kind of a feel

-good story Yeah, absolutely I wasn't sure who

I was gonna root for here Don't remember off

the top one. This is where I'm gonna suck in

this episode because I remember the first episode

We did with the first four episodes of this,

but I don't remember everything about it So I

don't remember who she faced and I know they

showed it Before this match, but I don't remember

who Serena faced in the first round off the top

of my head I have the notes somewhere here, but

anyway keep going Vanessa born. Oh, that's right.

I wanted born, but yeah see I liked Serena, but

I liked the opponent better, and that's the same

case here. I like Piper a little more than Serena

in this. Serena had some great, great moves,

just with Piper's, not necessarily speed, but

her power, and because of her size, I'm like,

why are you not throwing her around like a ragdoll?

Like, seriously. By the way, uh, I should probably

look stuff up before, uh, I do stuff cause Serena

is actually signed as of two days ago to be,

to be a trainer on WWE. And that's a good story.

Cause, uh, we talked about it last time that

she, she got called up when she was younger or

had got the call to WWE. She did the straight

edge society stuff. If you remember, we talked

again, we talked about it in the first episode,

but. a I mean like a lot of us when we're younger

didn't understand the opportunity she had and

didn't make the most of it behind the scenes

and that kind of thing and just kind of fell

off the wagon in terms of doing the things she

needed to do and now she's back and I'm really

happy she's a trainer because she's got a great

story that I think will help a lot of the younger

wrestlers as they keep Going up and I mean she

debuted with WWE way back in 2010 and Didn't

last the full year And so yeah, it's nice that

she's Got the opportunity again. It's a it's

a good story much like some of the other ones

like Brian Kendrick from the Cruiserweight Classic

getting signed by WWE and getting another chance

to get back to where he was so that's good yeah

that makes me happy yeah absolutely and see I

don't even like I don't know like I said it was

2010 she was part of CM Punk straight -edge society

oh okay yeah I I I know I've been watching since

WrestleMania 23 yeah 23 so that was Yeah, I don't

know I've yeah, I can't do math because it's

been a really long crappy week so Barely know

where I am If I didn't have notes for this I'd

be completely lost See every once in a while

I prepare for these it's just far too rare So

anyway, yeah, I mean Piper wins the match deep

Like I said, I'm happy about the end of this

story now that I know she did get signed. That's

terrific. And yeah, as for who is pulling for,

I'm not sure. Like I said, you know, she's, Deeb's

a great story. Uh, I love the look of Piper though.

I'd love to see her in WWE, but like also, like

I said before, I mean, she's young. She's got

a lot of time to get there. Yeah, she has. The

next match we have Mercedes Martinez Versus Suhey,

thank you because I completely because I almost

wanted to call it Sujit Yeah, it's one of those

things where This one I didn't feel like meshed

all that well. It wasn't a bad match. It wasn't

a bad match, but it did not have the excitement

that the previous two matches had for me. Like,

I get it. Princess Suhei is supposed to be the

next female Rey Mysterio or whatever. Well, it's

funny. Yeah, it's funny too because like so Suhey

in the interim like between the time we've recorded

this Suhey beat Kylie Rae in the in her first

round matchup and Much like with Jazzy versus

Abby lathe. I think they got it wrong because

I've since then I've I looked up some of these

women and Kylie Rae. Holy crap. Is she a good

worker? Yeah, Kylie, I was very disappointed.

I was very let down in the first part of this

tournament when Kylie Rae did not advance when

she did not win. Yeah, Kylie and Jazzy were the

two that I feel like they got it wrong. And so

like Rae, if you watch some of her matches against

Jazzy Gabbard or against Toni Storm or the others,

she's really good. Yeah. But anyway, yeah back

to this one so in the end they Like I said, it's

for whatever reason didn't necessarily Match

up. It's a it's a shortish match. It's another

one. That's right around five minutes Martinez

wins After a fisherman's buster and just I Don't

know like the lucha ones Can It's tough because

the Lucha Libre style is based on sort of constantly

moving and then when you've got somebody who's

more of a power moves Yeah It does not mesh well

in this match. It doesn't always yeah, and you

know, you mentioned that she's kind of the female

Rey Mysterio. And I don't mean that as just for

the this is for the listeners more so than you.

I don't mean that as an insult, but that's what

I thought of her when I first saw her. Yeah,

but Rey is the toughest comparison you can make

because you mentioned somebody who could like

wrestle anybody's style and look amazing no matter

what. And it's Rey. I mean, we talked about it

with the Rumble too. It's been years. He comes

back in the Rumble and just looks amazing. And

so yeah, that's a it's a tough style to do and

it really makes you appreciate the ones who like

Ray who are bonafide absolute like Second they

retire Hall of Fame people Yeah Ding it's a bell

folks. It's wrestling. I don't know. Does she

what now? I feel like it makes me any time I

make a good point that should go off, which means

it wouldn't go off very much. So we close out

with Kyrie Sane versus Bianca Belair. And this

is another one that this is the longest one of

the matches that in this episode, I think it's

one of the longest matches of the tournament.

Yeah. And I think the idea was WWE has signed

Kairi Sane they know she's gonna be a star and

they wanted to kind of Showcase her showcase.

Well, I think they wanted to showcase Bellaire

here give her you know, give her a lot of time

to show off and look good. And we commented on

it in the first round. Bel Air has a wicked look

to her. I love the hair whip thing. I think that's

great. I can't believe nobody's ever thought

of anything like that. And I'm sure somebody's

done something similar in wrestling, but I can't

remember it. And, you know, I haven't seen it.

I think it's a great idea. It makes for a neat

look. It makes her look really smart Yeah, I

almost thought cuz I don't I don't remember her

using it the first time we saw her in this But

I almost thought that she grabbed like I didn't

real until like five seconds after I saw what

it was I'm like, I didn't realize it was her

hair and I'm like, why isn't the ref disqualified?

Like I'm like, wait a second, but he's sitting

here going It's like somebody calls Devo cuz

she whipped it yeah nice and the image of her

just sort of walking around and like you know

twirling it that kind of thing it works really

well it's a great intimidation yeah and she's

another one that she signed to a wwe contract

so i hope you know we'll see here at some point

uh she's only 28 so she definitely has time but

yeah i really like her look uh kairi saying i

have absolutely nothing bad to say about she's

ridiculously good and she's got that amazing

elbow drop that i mean everybody the instant

you see her you want to see it because everybody's

kind of heard about it she got to do it in the

rumble which was nice yeah absolutely so kairi

wins in the 10 minutes uh bel air Did some beautiful

moves in this she you know she's gonna she does

the squats during a suplex She just shows off

her power. She's got the hair I thought this

was a really good match one of the best actually

the second round if not the best You've got Belair

versus saying Insane looked really great in her

first round showing last time around and here

because I don't know if it's because she was

already signed or whatever it was because just

they wanted to put on a good match to show off

both of them you basically have Belair just destroying

her at times in this match and which makes her

look even better now to anyone that hasn't seen

this and is just watching Raw and Smackdown and

all that or Royal Rumble Watch the Mae Young

classic folks if you've ever wanted to see women

in wrestling and actually not just ring girls

or whatever Like you need to watch this because

while both of this is my favorite match to this

point Nice. Yeah, this might be my favorite match

of this whole tournament I need to read I'll

need to check my notes But I'm not sure cuz yeah,

it was really good and you know, props to both

of them. Now, part of it, I've hinted at it before,

but I mean, part of it too is they were given

the time, you know, they have 10 minutes. It's

a lot harder to put on a five minute match than

it is a 10 minute one. So they both, you know,

had more time to kind of show things off and

do their different moves. So, I mean, they both

proved they're worthy of the time though, cause

geez. Uh, and of course, yeah, I mentioned before

Kyrie Sane moves on after the elbow. Uh, but

yeah, they both managed to look really, well,

I mean, Sane came in, everybody knew she was

good and she's going to be a star, but they come

out of it. Yeah. Belair looks really good. And

I hope to see her more on NXT, but of course

they're focusing really heavily on Amber Moon

and Shayna Baszler, who we will get to very soon.

when ember moon popped up i was like oh like

not not in this but when she popped up in the

rumble i'm like wow i like her she was in the

first part of this she was in round one wasn't

she nope where am i i've seen her oh maybe it

was on that i had you watch an nxd takeover that

was right yeah she was in that and she's yeah

she's really good and you know we've gone We

talked about it in the first episode, how many

good female wrestlers they have now, and that

was back then. They've got more now, and they've

added more names, so they added in Ronda Rousey

since then. They've done a number of call -ups,

so pretty much they've taken a bunch from NXT.

I know we've talked about it. We talked about

it in the rumble when Rousey debuted and said,

oh, Mania. And we've talked about Ken Ronda.

She didn't say it so much as point to a sign

over again. It's kind of obvious. It's, you know,

in no unspoken terms kind of a thing, but it's

one of those things where Ken Ronda be ready,

be wrestling WWE style ready for Mania. Like,

is she just going to come up and, you know, rock

on her arm again? Like she did. Like, look, I

get it. Last time was more of a, a surprise thing.

It was more of a rock Rhonda thing more than

just her on her own, actually with a contract

signed to the company. But it's not a lot of

time between when rumble was and mania. It's

not that like four months or less. Like. I don't

know something like that. Yeah, I don't know

if she'll be ready. So and just seeing some of

these women Like like you said After this if

they're signed they stay they go to NXT women

in the next episode Just quickly. We start off

with Toni Storm and Lacey Evans. Yep, and Evans

is somebody who popped up in 2014 And she's on

NXT slash the May Young classic only a couple

years later. Right. Well, a little over two,

a little over two years after she debuted was

the filming and may young, et cetera, et cetera.

Right. That's two years and change to train and

Evans is good. I'm not trying to knock her or

anything. and she came from a military background

so she was definitely in good shape but Storm

is much more refined and polished and Storm's

only 22 but she's been doing it all her life

but you compare two and a half years to Ronda

Rousey only having a few months before a high

profile match and yeah I really wonder she'll

have to be in there it'll either be a spectacle

match her versus Stephanie or something like

that like another person who's not a wrestler

and it's not really gonna be much wrestling or

they're gonna have to put her in with somebody

who's an established veteran like an Oscar or

somebody who can kind of carry her see that was

the thing when they had the surprise reveal thing

of her showing up I thought, oh, well, Asuka

smacked her hand away. This means that it's going

to be... This is playing into Asuka's whole thing.

No one is ready for Asuka. Well, here's Ronda

Rousey. Is she ready? Is she not? We don't know.

We'll find out whether it's at Mania, whether

it's before or after. Obviously it's not been

before, but you know what I mean. Yeah, that's

the same thing here with Tony and Lacey. I really

wanted Lacey to win. I like Tony. I like them

both, but I like Lacey a little bit more. Yeah,

Lacey Evans so another one who signed and I mentioned

it before she's only been doing this a couple

years and She looks good. I mean this They weren't

given the time but I mean some of the moves and

everything they do here everything I thought

looked pretty pretty smooth and I like that Something

about it. They didn't necessarily click and to

be fair I mean storm doesn't necessarily click

until she fights Piper who they're friends in

real life But yeah, you can tell they both have

a lot of talent and I thought this was a solid

match especially for It's yet another five -minute

er, you know, this one went about 515. I have

it clocked in at But yeah, Tony storm won in

the end Evans was looking to win, but Storm just

hits a neck breaker over the knee, which is a

substitute for a normal finisher as a pile driver,

which of course is a no -no in WWE. Yeah, no.

I mean, if they're just now letting Seth use

the curb stop again, a pile driver, not so much.

Yeah, the curb stop it wasn't even because it

injured people is just because they didn't like

thought it looked mean anyway so I mentioned

Shayna Baszler earlier and She gets my I am here

and or me I am Yum, I Really like her. She's

a very good story Baszler is newish and I can't

remember the amount of time we mentioned I've

mentioned it before though. I mean she comes

from an MMA background. She's friends, I guess

with Rousey and Baszler hasn't been doing it

for a super long time and so Yim was kind of

the perfect opponent. Like this was a really

good match for another shortish one. Yeah, it

was a very good match. I absolutely love this

match. I thought Mia was gonna get it, but...

And I think that's yeah, that's how they set

it up too. They set it up as though You know

Mia was gonna win but Baszler they've set it

up so that she can win out of nowhere with a

quick submission and that's how they have her

in NXT and to be blunt it covers up the fact

that she hasn't been doing this super long and

Some of them, you know, like her matches with

Ember Moon are really really submission heavy

Because that's what she knows and she'll get

better, you know given time And it's the same

sort of thing that I was trying to say earlier

with Rousey that they're probably gonna do where

You know, she does a lot of submission stuff

stuff you might see in in MMA But yes This match

was just so Shayna is a hard hitter. Yes. I mean

like Much like with Oscar, you can tell too that

her strikes and stuff probably connect a little

more than I would like if I were in the ring.

Yeah. That's code for I would be crying. But

anyway, please stop hurting me. And then we had

Dakota Kai versus Rhea Ripley. Yeah, which. So

Ripley is super young we mentioned that back

in the first round Dakota Kai has been around

longer and both of these are signed to NXT both

of these women are signed to NXT and Yeah, they're

High so Ripley's got like a great look with the

longer legs and the really good kicks Kai as

well Has a good look, sort of a long body as

well. So Dakota Kai wins this one. Riffley though,

I think has a really bright future. She's 21,

so she's super young. I think she might be the

youngest at everybody, I can't remember. And

yeah, Dakota Kai, she's been wrestling for most

of her life. Another one from it's weird. They've

got a couple people Kai and storm both from Auckland,

New Zealand But yeah, I mean Ripley has a lot

of potential Kai moving on is the smart call

just because she Yeah, but man the future is

so bright for some of these women and Ripley

is one of the ones at the top because to be 21

years old and to put on she had a really solid

match in the first round between her and Miranda

Salinas But for her to be able to put on two

good matches and Get in a decent number of moves.

Like it wasn't like she was carried by both women

either is really impressive to me her strikes

and everything look good like she definitely

has natural talent and this was another like

solid match but it's another shorter one this

one clocked in a little over seven minutes but

yeah it was good right person moved on Yeah,

I kind of wish Ria would have, but like you said,

it gives her more time to develop and everything

else and all that. And the next match is who?

Is Candice and somebody, I think? Yeah, Candice

O 'LeRae and Nicole Savoy. Savoy. You pronounce

good. This is the last match of the night. I

like Nicole Savoy. See, look what she did to

me. No, you're right. It was Savoy. Savoy. Yeah,

Savoy. I liked her in the first round. I just

like Candice a little bit here, better here.

Candice has movesets that... Candice is somebody

who was just really recently signed, by the way.

Yeah. And the whole thing with her, like, not

necessarily in the ring, but out of the ring

is, oh, Johnny Gargano is her husband or something

or other, I think. Yeah, Johnny Gargano, human

wrestling machine. It's gonna be interesting

to see when he gets called up. Yeah, hopefully

not for a bit because so the NXT stuff I think

I mentioned it during our rumble but he put on

easily the match of the year so far at the previous

takeover and it's gonna be real hard for anything

to beat it because it's one of the best matches

you'll see period and Candice actually got sort

of a guest appearance by attacking CNAlmos's

Valet who kept interfering in the match. So it's

nice to see her on TV and getting something to

do as well. But here, yeah, she beats Savoy.

This is pretty solid for the most part, but another

shorter match that I really wish they had had

more time to do. But on the other hand Savoy

This was the tournament if I remember right was

the first time she was back after a torn ACL

Which is obviously a major major injury. So I

have a feeling she's probably what she probably

wasn't at a hundred percent Which I mean we talked

about bad luck with injuries well tearing your

ACL is pretty bad luck Yeah, so I mean I'm not

gonna fault her for She for somebody who's coming

back and trying to shake off ring rust in the

middle of a huge Not televised, but you know

internet televised whatever you want to call

it WWE Network revised showing She looked really

good, and she looks pretty solid here Laray of

course is terrific. I'm really happy. She's signed

She's gonna be a star with the WWE if they stick

with her Yeah, we never know what happens there's

just always random stuff that comes up or injuries

or whatever Anyway, and yeah, that was the end

of episode Six which was one of the better episodes

so far Like I said the Candice LeRae Nicole Savoy

match the Rhea Ripley Dakota Chi Matt, you know

pretty much all of it But like, you know the

whole episode that might like outside of like

the finale obviously that might be My favorite

episode out of these five is that one? Episode

7 we've got Abby Lathe versus Mercedes Martinez

Martinez wins, but Abby kind of looked good but

at the same time she didn't I don't know if she

was having an off night or what was going on

I think they did the they want to do the underdog

sort of thing and I mean because Martinez is

Seemingly stronger or at least she's depicted

as being stronger. I'm sure lathe is very strong

In reality as well, but oh They just chose just

kind of they just sort of chose to do it that

way and Martinez is one of the older Competitors

Yeah, she's my age so She's in way better shape

than I am. That's another story anyway But the

sad thing is folks pretty much anybody that we

talk about on this podcast are in better shape

than either one of us Well any of the yeah, any

of the wrestlers are in better shape than any

of us period. I mean that goes You know, that's

pretty much goes without saying I think when

we talk about Hollywood and do nerd stuff everybody's

in better shape than us do but that's another

story so I don't know. I thought this was a good

match. They did a good job telling a story You

know, that's one of the things so we haven't

talked about it much in this episode but The

so first of all, I mentioned the aftermath Match

where they did the tag match. They had Beth Phoenix

on commentary for that And I'm not trying to

tear on rip up with the commentary or anything.

But man, Beth Phoenix really good at commentary

And I actually think she might be better than

Lita. But having said that One of the things

I liked in the May Young classic and we've talked

about it before They do a good job of telling

store of helping the wrestlers tell the story,

which is the job of the announcer And it's one

thing we've commented that the WWE guys do not

do a good job, because Cole's too busy trying

to hawk shit to actually talk about what's going

on in the ring. Which is not all his fault, obviously.

I mean, he's told like, hey, I gotta sell, you

know, sell this new app. Yeah, that's the good

thing about the NXT stuff, about the Mae Young

classic, about the stuff that uses JR and Lita

and whomever else that is more Hall of Famer

or classic WWE personalities, they don't have

to hawk all that stuff. And you've said in the

past, I don't remember if you've said it on air,

but JR essentially said he's not hawking anything.

He's there to talk about the wrestling. He's

not there to talk about - And that's one of the

reasons he's gone, which sucks. He's gone again?

no no just that like it's one of the reasons

he's not on raw and he doesn't do the major shows

that's what i mean like he just he's not interested

in that aspect of it and that's not what they

want which stinks so and again like i thought

they really helped this match along they told

the story of martinez's arm being injured and

lathe you know keeps trying to lathe kept trying

to Go after it and you know pin her with it and

that kind of thing But in the end martinez was

still able to hit the fisherman's buster and

pick up a win The ending felt a little off with

it, which I also think hurt the match, but I

don't know still thought it was pretty good I

mean one thing is everybody at this point is

much more experienced. So Yeah So this next one

was interesting we talked about telling a story

I mean the whole point of the next match was

to tell the story that Shana Baszler who defeats

Candice LeRae via submission in only three minutes

The whole the whole point was to make Baszler

look super super strong and she chokes out Candice

we see Johnny come out and yeah the whole point

was to tell a story and to make shana look strong

and that's exactly what they did yeah it is exactly

what they did so it was a short match it didn't

really let anybody do a whole lot admittedly

i mean candice gets some nice moves in with a

suicide dive and dvd dt on the ramp might i add

um which man i feel like it's another this is

another like possible time I could rant about

how much I love the DDT and how much it sucks

that it's not a finishing move except for like

Andreas almost and a couple others who are bringing

it back which is nice anyway getting really off

topic but yeah I like you know we see Baszler

she won't shake the hand before the match she

chokes her out after the match the whole point

was to make her look like a badass and they succeeded

so you know it's not like a five -star match

but in terms of telling a story and telling us

what we needed to know about the competitor it

worked perfectly yeah yeah it did it's probably

the only time i think it did and i have not i

i did not look at like when i heard of this this

tournament i thought oh it's to get a trophy

it's to potentially get signed or unsigned i

have i still to this day have not looked into

what the winner would have gotten other than

the may young classic trophy and be called the

first inaugural may young classic champion so

i don't know i was not expecting them to be wwe

storytelling during this and this worked very

well yeah and you know again it helps when you've

got the announcers to tell a story and what i

really liked and what they did Was going into

the next match which was the Niven versus Tony

Storm match It's the complete opposite the two

of them know each other. They play that up. They

play up that they're both Faces and they play

up that You know, they're having fun at it more

than anything else Yeah, and I mean it's still

competitive but yet this it was a Really good

match. This is another one that I think was one

of the best matches of the whole tournament.

Yep, and I mean Tony Storm one which was a I

don't know if it's surprising or not. They're

both terrific I mean they they both absolutely

proved either of these women belong in WWE or

whatever is whatever they want to do if they

want to stay independent then stay independent

but they're both terrific I mean if you enjoy

wrestling you should pay money for to see either

of them is they're good enough so oh absolutely

the thing that I'm looking at now thinking back

on this whole tournament is how and just wondering

how any of the storyline stuff is going to work

into main roster because comparing who's on main

roster now to seeing all of these women in our

first episode that we did episodes 134 and now

this episode of the podcast and I'm like I can't

see how any of these people not saying that I

don't want them to but I don't see the like I

don't see how potentially let's just say Piper

versus Naya happens not saying it would but like

You know, this isn't going to often happen. It's

been happening recently with the men because,

hello, Braun Strowman, Brock Lesnar, Kane, all

of that. Like, the men have broken the ring like

three times in the last six months. I'm not saying

I want to see the women do that because most

of the women are not the size of Nia Jax and

Piper Niven, but... That would be kind of cool

to see if it hadn't already been done to death

so much by the men at this point. Yeah, and it's

funny though, I mean we've seen a lot of firsts

and that kind of thing for the women the last

little bit which have been, it's funny because

all, it's been put on, there are the matches

that have been put on as firsts have all been

really good. We had the cage match between Charlotte

and Sasha. Which was outstanding, you know the

first ever hell in the cell the rumble was surprisingly

good for a match that These women have never

done before. I mean, I'm still blown away by

The fact they did such a good job in the first

rumble because it's a ridiculously hard match

to pull off we talked about in the episode that

You got to know where everybody is. You got to

make sure, you know, you know, step on anybody.

You can't sort of have any type of accident or

anything or else you can eliminate yourself.

It's not so. Yeah, this was a good match. They

play up the fact that their friends, you know,

they even hug after the match, if I remember

right. Yeah, they graduated like I think. I think

Piper congratulates Tony or something. Yeah,

so. Because I know JRM leader commented on that.

Oh, it's such good sportsmanship Yeah, yeah,

it was a great match some of the highlights to

man storm hits a gorgeous considering the Difference

in size and everything German suplex near the

end of the match on Piper, which yeah man is

impressive and then she hits a top rope leg drop,

which was gorgeous like Having Tony hit the suplex

on Piper that was Like oh my god, really? Yeah,

they do a job of building. Not in a bad way,

but like oh my god Really is this really happening

right now cuz wow is that awesome? And they did

a good job building to it too. It didn't just

sort of happen out of nowhere I don't think there's

anything with Piper Niven that could happen out

of nowhere. You know there are no No. Yeah. She's,

she's really good at PKOs here. Yeah. She knows

her character really well. She's really good

at it. So both women who are, uh, again, yeah,

staggered that neither of them have WWE contracts.

Although I would bet they both got offered them

and probably said no. So, but anyway, I'm glossing

over the next match is amazing too. It's one

of the, another Great one. And this is Kyrie

Sane and Dakota Kai. I brought it up earlier.

Kai is a veteran. Well, Sane's a veteran, too.

I mean, this was a really good match. This is

another one, too, that it's good, good guy. Well,

good girl. Sorry. Good girl versus good girl.

After the. Baszler, LeRae sort of choke out that

kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah, and I don't think

that. Necessarily faces can face each other.

It doesn't have to always be face versus you

I mean something I kind of wish they'd remember

on the main roster They do it once in a while

and I don't know if they do it too much, but

I don't know they Whatever we talked we talked

too much about our issues with the shows being

Too long and never knowing what to do with people's

anyway I wonder if WrestleMania is gonna be eight

hours this year, because last year it was seven.

I don't know. Because it takes me, you know,

two days to watch WrestleMania. But anyway, Takota

Kai versus Kyrie saying, um, this match was amazing.

This is just a stupid comment, and I know it

is. I'm wondering if Kyrie will ever change her

ring attire. not saying she's going away from

the pirate princess or whatever it is but like

change the color of it or if she's always going

to keep it the white color it's just something

popped into my head I'm pretty sure she will

at some point yeah I mean she she doesn't essentially

just you know she just likes the well she likes

brain cramp uh -oh she just no she just really

likes sailing there we go What's gonna be really

interesting is if you know when she finally does

come up to main roster and she ends up in like

Extreme rules if she's gonna get to use that

that ship wheel as a weapon That would be funny

they could have a hair versus ship wheel match

in NXT That's Belair here, yeah, that would be

interesting anyway So Kairi Sane moves on, very

good match again, very good episode overall again,

as to be expected. I mean, as they keep going,

obviously you get more and more people who are

veterans. So not to mention who have met each

other at some point too. See, that's the other

thing about WWE is that they, you know, The people

that have met each other before work together

well better than someone who's just meeting for

the first time and never worked with each other

before Yep So yeah good we had episode 8 here

which were down to two matches so yep Shorter

and shorter it was Martinez versus Baszler and

storm versus sane So this is an interesting sort

of match. They get a decent amount of time. And,

you know, they talk about how the fact that Martinez

and Baszler are friends outside of this and know

each other pretty well and that sort of thing.

And just, um, man, I mean, it was a hard hitting

match. They did a good job, again, telling a

story. They had a good amount of time. uh martinez

takes a lot of control here because she's been

wrestling longer than baszler uh it's funny because

i mean neither of them have the experience of

some of the other women but still they um actually

martinez has a fair amount of experience tell

him i'm talking about man did i get hit on the

head today but so It's been a long day it's hard

to leave work early when you're not supposed

to and record a podcast but So anyway basler

so baslers We've I commented before she's not

super experienced but man her submissions look

really good and she's good at sort of setting

them up and Martinez took control of a lot of

this match Martinez. We've got a really good

kind of hard -hitting Yeah, I commented on it

earlier style and the two of them just match

up really well They've got styles that absolutely

comment their comments compliment each other

And the match looks really believable because

of that. I mean, it honestly looks like they're

really, you know, hammering each other and that

kind of thing. And, you know, hopefully they're

not. Nobody's injured. But this was probably

the match more than any other that I watched.

And I realized that Baszler's got a good future

in wrestling if she sticks with it. She's it's

gonna take some time. But if she's with somebody

that's got experience and Can help her she can

look good at this point already Because this

is a really good match and I would argue might

be better than the next one even though the next

one features two women who are Outstanding and

been doing this forever Yeah. Comparatively.

Yeah. The Storm Sane match was, ugh, it was easily

the match of the episode for me. Out of the two.

Okay. Like, wow. Just comparing the, I mean,

Kairi is kind of a high flyer. She's not like

all high flyer, but that, like, she's not a grounded

pal like Shayna is. She's not like Kairi has

that one submission move, but like I don't remember

if she's used it all the time as the finisher.

I don't think so. But her facing Tony Storm was

just cool as hell to see. Yeah, they're terrific.

I'd love to see them wrestle again. And, you

know, this was easily the longest match so far.

It was more than 14 minutes in fact and Yeah,

just I Don't very good solid match go watch it.

I mean the some of the some of them so Zane was

injured in this one. She suffered a concussion

and There's about three. There's about three

different points in it where I go, oh man, that's

where she got hit. And then there'll be one later

on. Like the two of them are obvious. Yeah, the

two of them have obviously worked. Ah hell with

it, I'll just say it. So Lita at the start, I

don't like throwing announcers under the bus

by the way, but Lita at the start incorrectly

says the two of them have never faced each other.

They have. uh just not in wwe obviously and so

they you know part of the reason they work so

well together is they've seen each other that

kind of thing but they obviously have some level

of comfort because they work a match that's a

lot more dangerous than some of the others and

don't seem to be worried about injuring each

other and unfortunately they injured each other

but yeah And it's so funny because you hear in

the main shows, oh, you know, Braun Strowman,

not necessarily Braun, but I'm using him as an

example, Braun Strowman hit his knee or hit his

leg or came down off of the ropes in a weird

way and twisted something. And now whoever Braun's

facing, whoever the hell it is, wrestler X is

going to go after that and incapacitate him and

win and blah, blah, blah. And this match, it's

like, oh. They both kind of got injured. Uh -oh,

that's not good Yikes Yeah, I mean it happens

and they Part of it too is you want to put on

a really good show for the fans, which they succeeded

at Quite a little quite a lot And yeah, I'm so

in the end I mean Kyrie sane wins with the elbow

I don't think I've made it secret that I'm a

huge fan of Storm. I think she's outstanding.

Especially for, like I said before, she's 22

years old, which it's insane how good she is

at this point. And yeah, I was almost disappointed

to see her gone. And that's not a knock on Zane,

who is also utterly amazing. I mean, she's got

the best elbow drop you'll ever seen. I mean,

it's a better elbow drop than almost Hulk's elbow

drop is. Hulks? I think you mean Macho Man. He

said Hulk Hogan. Hulk Hogan not known for the

elbow trap. He had an elbow drop. Anyway, yes,

probably Macho Man. Most likely. Yeah, I've said

this before in the last three years of this podcast

that we've been doing this. Can like multiple

wrestlers, but I will like one more than the

other when they face each other This is what

happened earlier when we were talking about storm

versus Evans. I Liked Tony here. I liked her

in the in the match against Evans. I like Kyrie

here I liked Kyrie before in the other matches

that she was in But here in this match, I like

them equally at this point. Like I wouldn't mind

seeing like Tony versus I don't want to say Carmella,

but maybe, oh god, maybe like a Becky Lynch or

something. I think Tony versus Charlotte would

be an outstanding match. I definitely think she

could put on a match, I think anybody could put

on a match with Osco, who's one of the best as

well. Charlotte's kind of cheating too actually

because she's insanely good, but yeah Becky Tony

versus Sasha, I think it'd be a pretty even matchup

though. Yeah As long as Sasha doesn't dive out

of the ring onto her head Please please stop

doing that. Yes, please stop So like you said

Kyrie wins so it's her versus Shayna Baszler

in the finale episode episode nine Yep. Um, who

did you, before you saw this, like when you saw

that it was going to be Kyrie versus Shayna,

who did you think was going to win? I mean, I

think I mentioned this in the first episode.

As soon as Rousey and Cole were there and shown

on camera, I figured they were going to go, okay,

Baszler's going to win because they're friends.

And I figured they were going to set something

up with like, they're going to face off versus

the WWE. Women or the NXT women or something

like that or they were gonna shoot some sort

of angle or something like that, but It's so

I mean Kyrie saying one So it made it more surprising

I think which worked and I like baszler, but

she didn't have I think the right person won

because she didn't have the experience where

they should maybe push her that far yet. Right.

And I think it's been this, not to mention I

think it would put a lot of pressure on her if

she goes to her first major match in NXT and

they're talking about her as the Mae Young Classic

winner. Yeah, I just think this is a smart thing.

It's a lot of pressure to put on somebody who

hasn't wrestled an awful lot It doesn't hurt

anybody Kyrie saying looked good from the start

You had to figure somebody who was signed by

WWE was gonna win Yeah, it's WWE Mae Young classic

on the WWE Network I mean the only way an unsigned

athlete or entertainer or whatever wrestler that

would have done this is like if it was somebody

that they had either just signed or were going

to like see that's why why I said earlier like

what is the other than showcasing the women which

is great other than showcasing all these female

athletes what is the quote -unquote end prize

for the Mae Young classic like you know You look

at tough enough, the prize for winning that show

at the time was a potential contract with WWE.

That's the thing, for a non -signed wrestler,

a non -signed female wrestler, why wouldn't they

have had the contract thing be the prize? Obviously,

you had both, unsigned and signed females in

this tournament, but like... Other than showcasing

all of the talent. I don't see the point of Like

I said, other than the the notoriety of saying

you were the first Mae Young classic winner Yeah,

I don't I don't see it. I don't see the whole

thing about it Yeah, no, I don't know. It might

be nice if yeah, there was something specific

they were they had them working towards but it's

Tough when you have people on there that are

already signed and have already been shown on

WWE TV and that kind of thing. So. Yeah. Mayhem

Classic overall, I think it was a really, really

great thing they did. I can't wait to see. I

would rather like, obviously we're out of the

Diva era, but like I remember in the Diva era,

they did the Diva search. I much prefer the Mayong

Classic over the D -Research to find new talent

to either be, like I said, the ones that aren't

already signed or even the ones that are signed

that don't get that much ring time, whether it's

on NXT or the main stuff. Like, this is a much

better way of finding female talent than what

they used to be doing. It's nice that they do

these because I think it gives the wrestlers

a chance to just concentrate on the wrestling

I mean they get to tell the story in ring and

that kind of thing, but they really don't have

to worry about Doing backstage segments or an

interview before and after that kind of thing

It's it's gonna be kind of liberating for them

and I like that they do these con these kinds

of things for the network. It's a nice sort of

exclusive, although a number of the matches,

you know, they posted on YouTube to kind of drum

up more viewership. Apparently, by the way, it

was a huge success in terms of viewers. It was

one of the most watched things they've done on

the network, which is nice to see. And it's cool

to just have these sort of wrestling things because

because of the way the network works, it's just

on demand. Like we had You know forever and because

of real -life stuff we had forever in between

these episodes But you could just go back and

watch them and I like that like so, you know

We talk about how long raw is all the time This

is why I feel like it should be on the damn network

because then you could split it up You know you

hit pause and you just resume it later And I

think it's perfect for these sort of tournaments

to have it there I think it would help a lot

if they had, say, your stupid way too long wrestling

show on there. You mentioned WrestleMania is

going to be eight hours. That should be something

that. Yeah, you know, I know you're probably

right is the problem. You think I'm going to

sit there and like watch it for eight hours straight?

I mean, I was surprised that, okay, I get it,

Royal Rumble, first pay -per -view of the year,

it's kind of a special thing. Royal Rumble, SummerSlam,

and Survivor Series are the other three big,

big, big, big ones outside of WrestleMania, which

is the biggest out of the WWE pay -per -views.

But I was surprised that Royal Rumble was almost

three and a half, four hours. I still sat here

through the whole thing because as I said in

the last episode of the podcast, the Royal Rumble

layout of the card was done very well. There

were no moments in the Royal Rumble that I wanted

to get up and go to the bathroom or stop watching

it and do something else, needing a break. I

didn't need a break. But last year's WrestleMania,

we, I... I out took what we said about it and

put it in a YouTube video clip about, you know,

WrestleMania, seven hours, too long. Like, wow,

no. It should not take me, you, anyone two days

to watch WrestleMania. Yeah, and so these network

sort of scenarios where they split it up. You

know, you can watch it whenever this stuff was

pre taped. Uh, they had taped it in a few days

over at a full sale where NXT usually takes place.

Right. And yeah, they just put it up in the network

in chunks. You know, they didn't, they didn't

put it all off on the same day. They put the

rounds up on the same day. Yeah. Which is why,

you know, we did the first round. I think we

recorded it before the second round was up. I

could be wrong, but anyway. Yeah, it was because

I thought originally that it was only going to

be four episodes at the time. I thought, oh,

round one, two, three, four, champion, yada,

yada, yada. Yeah. We, we watched and recorded

Mae Young classic part one in episode 26 before.

I'm like, oh, it's not over yet. That must mean

there's more coming. When is more coming? And

it was like later on in that year or whatever

that it had happened. I was only a week or so

later. I can't remember. But yeah, anyway. Yeah.

So yeah, these work out well. I think this was

a really good special. And the timing of it was

really good, too, because we got it well before

we would start seeing these. Matches that focused

on the female wrestlers like the Royal Rumble

that we you know, just did a review of Right.

Absolutely So Mae Young classic absolutely loved

it I can't wait till they do the next one later

this year. I assume or maybe the end of this

year Yeah, there's so they're planning more of

these sort of tournament style so they had a

UK tournament Which we haven't reviewed and I

mean it was very good But I don't know if you

know that will ever review it so anyway they

had the UK tournament they keep doing all of

these kind of I Hope they keep doing these tournaments

just because it I Mentioned before works really

well on the network and I just think it's a good

extra kind of thing for the viewers. It's probably

fun for the wrestlers. Hopefully they don't kind

of get overworked. Hopefully not. Yeah. The thing

about the network is what is so cool about WWE

network is that you have 30 plus years of content.

there or more at this point like you can find

anything on there that you remember as a kid

from years and years and years ago whether it's

you know Monday Nitro whether it's WCW whether

it's ECW whether it's whatever because there's

like I think at one point I don't remember what

it is apparently but something either JR King

or Cole or somebody said there's like over 20

,000 hours of content on the WWE Network You

don't necessarily have to jump into Raw and SmackDown

or, I mean, sure, jump into NXT, but like, WWE

at this point in time with WWE Network is not

like comics. You don't need to read 600 other

issues to catch up on issue number 601. So you

can pretty much start anywhere, whether it's

the in -ring stuff, whether it's the original

series stuff, any of that. Anyway, we're rambling

at this point This was really good Are we gonna

do a full if we do full rating for the thing?

I'm just gonna say it's oh, yeah It's just a

five out of five. I think it was a good event

It's a nice sort of extra for people who subscribe

to the network and I again, you know, I like

that they do this stuff it gives independent

wrestlers the chance to Show what they can do

to a much wider audience than say just the Crowds

that they're used to of sort of the hardcore

wrestling fans who you know go to all the live

events So yeah, there's there's no downside to

this. It doesn't It doesn't cost them a lot of

money to put it on and it builds. They're using

the same arena that they use for NXT. Like that

was one thing I noticed. I'm like, Oh my God,

it's the crowd, not necessarily the crowd itself,

but the ambient noise around the crowd was very

quiet because again, they're using the NXT arena.

Obviously. Yeah. Nobody's playing with beach

balls or, uh, yeah. Uh, anyway. Alright, so yes,

I agree may young classic as a whole five out

of five stars absolutely loved it There wasn't

anything I didn't like about it like I said before

we like certain character certain wrestlers over

others, but overall very well done product coming

up next episode we're gonna be Reviewing my first

NXT takeover, which was Brooklyn three so we'll

do that and then after that we're going to be

doing in the episode after that we're going to

be doing the first 365 episode following kevin

owens so that's what's coming up here on mayhem

lights speaking of our favorites yep See how
